Aww, cripes. I didn't know I'd have to write a description. How many words is that so far, like a hundred? Soooo, yeah. Mildly interesting stuff. Stuff that interests you. Mildly. It's in the name, ffs.

2024.02.17 10:12 Cryogenator C1 CSI Tetraplegics; Quadruple Amputees; and Organ Transplant, Implant, Resection, and Removal Patients Prove That the Brain Alone is Essential for Identity Survival

The neuroscientist, nanotechnologist, and cryobiologist stasists who say only the brain is essential to preserve because growing or building replacement bodies will be easy compared to reanimating currently cryopreserved patients are surely correct, because all current patients will require extremely sophisticated molecular nanotechnology if they are to be biologically reanimated. If we had the level of suspended animation oft depicted in science fiction, then yes, reanimation might be easier than growing or building a new body, but existing human cryopreservation technology is far more primitive and will remain so for at least decades to come. Microscopic damage across a vastly complex network of 86 billion neurons, 85 billion nonneuronal cells, and anywhere from 100 trillion to one quadrillion synapses (in addition to the 28 or 36 trillion cells in the average female or male body if the whole body is to be reanimated) must be repaired. That same technology would also allow for the precise molecular assembly of whole bodies, and a new body could be grown or built using less advanced technology than that.
There is no question that identity fully survives limb loss. Amputees are exactly the same people after losing one, multiple, or all limbs. (They may experience depression and anger resulting from traumatic limb loss and the required lifestyle changes afterward, but neither of these would apply to a reanimated cryonaut, who would not be conscious during amputation and would awaken with fully functional limbs.) It is completely unrealistic to imagine that we might not be able to create perfect new limbs by the time reanimations begin. We already have the ability to primitively transplant limbs and attach telepathically controlled bionic limbs which can send basic sensations to the user. By the time we have the ability to repair the microscopic damage to cryopreserved brains and bodies, we will undoubtedly have perfected limb cloning and bionic limbs, as reversing the primitive cryopreservation of today is a fundamentally more difficult task. Thus, torsopreservation would certainly be more than sufficient.
Also, nearly all organs have been replaced either through transplantation, implantation, resection, or removal. People have lost eyes, tongues, mouths, ears, noses, faces, hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys, thyroids (without becoming different people), appendices, spleens, stomachs, and nearly every other part of the body (other than the spinal column and brain, the diaphragm may be the last remaining exception, and artificial diaphragms are currently in development, and the diaphragm is clearly not essential to identity). Even the 600-million-neuron "second brain" of the enteric nervous system can be removed or replaced, as there are people living after removal of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and gallbladder. The large intestine and even the small intestine have also been entirely removed without patients becoming different people, proving that this "second brain" is certainly not necessary for identity survival.
I believe that leaves us with, essentially, only the spinal column. While no human has yet survived without a spine (literally speaking), rhesus monkeys survived somatransplantation (whole-body transplantation) with no changes in personality observed by Dr. Robert J. White and his team, and humans have survived C1 complete spinal injuries resulting in the complete and permanent disconnection of the brain from the spinal cord, which is effectively the same as losing the spine as far as the brain's concerned. After the brain is no longer able to communicate with the rest of the nervous system throughout the body, people retain all their memories and personality (again, discounting personality changes from depression over and anger at the traumatic event and being bedridden for life, which obviously wouldn't apply to a reanimated patient). Emergency medical care providers stress the importance of spinal immobilization in order to reduce the risk of paralysis. This is totally unrelated to identity preservation. Also, even the most expertly articulated dancer, gymnast, pianist, painter, marksman, and so on from today will pale in comparison to the superhuman articulation of bioengineered, bionic, and virtual bodies.
I've seen the same articles reposted and the same arguments repeated for over a decade in these debates over neuropreservation (brain) and cephalopreservation (head) versus somapreservation (body). I find this highly confusing since this isn't actually a hypothetical argument at all.
The experiences of C1 tetraplegics with complete spinal injuries; quadruple amputees; and organ transplant, implant, resection, and removal patients who have collectively lost virtually every part of the body and have had their brains completely disconnected from their spines have already proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the brain is indeed the only truly essential organ. We can be sure that no part of the body other than the brain is truly essential for identity survival because people have already collectively survived the loss or disconnection from the brain of every one of the 79 organs and virtually every other part of the body with zero memory loss and with their original personalities intact.

2023.11.07 04:49 Cool_Reference_6081 Help With Coping

Hello, let me first premise this by saying that I am not an amputee. My cousin, who’s actually more like a brother to me, was recently in an electrical accident this past June. He was in a bad way and we weren’t sure he was going to make it. But luckily he was able to pull through, and unfortunately had to have both of his hands amputated. He is having a hard time coping with everyday life even after receiving his prosthetics. He calls himself a shell of his former self. He doesn’t want to go outside. He hides from company when they come over. He sleeps all day and doesnt try to groom himself anymore. I know the accident was rather recent but he doesn’t seem to be accepting this as his new reality. He talks about the future as if he wont be there and when anyone tries to talk to him about how we need him here or how this kind of talk effects us, he says we dont know what he’s going through. I don’t know what to say to him. I told him if he really feels this way then he should talk to someone who knows what he’s going through, but he says that if he does that it’ll be like making it official. I feel like he’s spiraling doing mental gymnastics making it seem like we’d be better off without him. He’s got 3 kids and a wife who love him dearly and I know we’d all be broken up if he wasn’t around. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on things I can say to get through to him. Sorry for the ramble.

2023.09.08 19:45 GeneralResearcher456 /uj Holy shit, power scalers

Dude claims a 20 gorillas would stand a chance against a fucking T-Rex. As if that's not bad enough, he says T-Rexes are "literally giant chickens," gets called out and then goes on to have a mental breakdown complete with backpedalling, coping, and mental gymnastics while doing his best to avoid actually debating
/RJ I was a fool to doubt the power of a silverback gorilla. It's more like: Can 20 T-Rexes possibly hope to survive against a quadruple amputee silverback gorilla that's in a coma and dying?

2023.04.02 16:52 5YearsOnEastCoast My early thoughts on TDI 2023

Since I saw other people doing this, I wanted to give it a shot too. These are my full predictions on what will happen in new season so far. I will be talking about characters, who will be antagonist, couples, elimination order and the future. The only thing we knew about new season is that we have a flyer that has some interesting images, few "leaked" images, and 4 trailers (two in Italian) and it will premiere first in Italy on K2 on 10th April. I dunno when it will air in other countries (tho Canada seems to start showing trailers for new season, so it could come soon). Now I could be wrong about my predictions, since once more trailers start showing up, they might give quite a different picture about characters and what will happen in the show. So time to start analyzing.

  1. Antagonist
Ok, first of all we don't really know much about these new characters (there are no bios or anything like that) and the only thing to determine on who will be the antagonist are the trailers (and one certain image)... and frankly I have no idea who will be the main antagonist. I will name few characters who I think can be antagonist of the season... but at same why I also can't see them as antagonist. Also I want to point out that antagonist could have "ulterior motive" as mentioned in the promotional flyer.
Nichelle - She was the most predicted character for main antagonist (the Heather of new cast), but trailers (so far) have not really given anything about her being an antagonist. Plus there is a chance that she might be an early boot if that "Bonfire ceremony scene" is true. So she could be either be like Amy the minodecoy antagonist. Or heck maybe not even a minor at all. She could just be a jerk, but never really antagonizing anyone in the same was as Heather.
Julia- People think that she is either going to be either friend or enemy with Nichelle. And she seems to be an "influencer" and less popular than Nichelle. She could either actually wanting to be friends with Nichelle or backstab her (or Nichelle is the one who backstabs her). And Julia could lead her team on who is going home. But as same time I don't know. She could also be Bridgette/Lindsay hybrid.

Greatest friends? Or worst enemies?
Ripper - While he does look grumpy in few poses, but I think he is more likely to be a comic relief than antagonist.
MK- One of the leaked images, has MK making an evil grin. Now that could mean that she is THAT character with an "ulterior motive"... or it could mean nothing cause many characters who aren't even antagonist made that face in previous seasons.

An underdog protagonist? Or the hidden antagonist?
Axel- She was the second most popular pick for main antagonist. But I think she could be like this gen's anti-hero in vein of Duncan, Shawn or Valentina Escobar.
And that is all suspects on who could be main antagonist. Sure I could say someone like Zee is an antagonist but there is zero implications about him being an antagonist. All of these characters I mention I can see being antagonist, but at same time also can't. Maybe things would change once more footage is shown.
  1. Couples
Ah yes, One of the most popular aspects of the show (but also controversial): couples. Every season with new cast has few couples being formed. In TDI we had SIX, TDROTI had 2 (3 if you want to count Anne Maria/Vito) and TDPI had almost 2. This season looks like it would have in 2 13 episode "seasons"., so I imagine at least 2 couples being formed but who?
Wayne and Raj- One of the earliest things know about new seasons is that it would have LGBT couple and once the first poster was released people were guessing on who will it be. One of them were Wayne and Raj. Considering in how many shots we see them together in trailers (and even grouped together in flyer) it is likely that they will become couple. Or heck maybe they are already a couple.
But I'm pretty sure that they would also be a heterosexual couple (and ones from the other team that the hockey dudes are a part of) and who would that be?
Chase and Priya - Why I think they would be a couple? Well there is that one scene in trailer that they are teasing. Plus they could be the "normal couple" of the season just like we saw with Gwen and Trent, Mike and Zoey and almost with Dave and Sky.

Yeah, they are (likely) going to be couple alright
And that is all with potential couples. Rest is pure enigma. Sure you could argue that Bowie and Caleb could become couples, but soon I will explain why I don't think that would happen.
3. Eliminations
Here is the part you have been all waiting for: elimination order of new characters and the possible reasons on why they got eliminated. I couldn't decide on precise order so I would split into 3 parts: Early boots, Midway boots/ Wildcards and main characters.
Early Boots
Caleb
Reason why I believe that Caleb is going to be an early boot or even possibly the first boot is with a few trailers and images out, he was practically never shown in any images and certainly not in his team ones. During "The bonfire camp ceremony" in one of the trailers, he is the only member of Frogs of Death to be absent. Sure you could argue that he is getting his marshmallow, but it seems unlikely, especially because he was the most missing from promo material.
Possible reason for his elimination - Why would he possibly be the first boot from his team and even from the season? Well generally the first boot in cast debuts is the one who has bad social game (Ezekiel, Staci and Beardo) and these contestants were weird. But Caleb doesn't look weird and we even saw few contestants fawn over him in promo flyer (possibly to throw off people that he isn't an early boot). But we still don't know what his REAL personality is. Granted you could say for pretty much any new contestant, but his case was especially bad because he appears the least in promo material (so far). So I imagine that he would be very arrogant, selfish, maybe even misogynistic and homophobic, aka the person who Twitter people love to cancel, and at least half of his teammates would realize this and boot him even if some contestants did worse challenge wise than him. The first boots in their debuts aren't really designed to be very liked (especially not Staci) and making Caleb so unlikeable would make people not miss him if he was first boot. Now the question is if he is going to be more hated tan Staci or not?

Caleb's reaction after finding out that he is the first boot
Zee
He was the most picked out of new contestants on who is going to be the first boot, but I don't believe that he will be first boot, but I don't see him lasting long. While he isn't as unknown as Caleb, his personality is still enigma. From the footage I have seen, he seems somewhat like Shaggy Rogers personality wise. Also one scene in the trailers, it has him missing (along with Axel) in his team. Honestly it would suck to see him go early, but I guess somebody has to go home early.
Update: It seems that Zee is an amputee character of the season. How would this affect Zee? I am not sure.
Possible reason for his elimination - I guess he screw-ups one challenge, for example he is scared to do it, and he is deemed as a "load" and they vote him off.

Zee can't watch him being an early boot
Scary Girl
What? Scary Girl who is a fan favorite is an early boot? Where have I heard this before? Oh right. It happened to Dawn, the fan favorite from ROTI, some even said that she IS Dawn, or related to her in some way. But of course I don't know if she will suffer "Dawn Syndrome", where she gets eliminated and then antagonist gets hate for that for like a decade. But hey what is her personality like. She is more in style of Perky Goth (Imagine Izzy going goth and you get the picture). Tho I want to pint out that she is the only one in the cast who doesn't seem to have actual name. I mean Scary Girl? Is there a reason for this? Will she reveal her real name? Why do I think that she could go early?
Possible reason for her elimination - There are 2 possible outcomes, first one is that she annoys (or scares) her teammates to the point that they don't want to deal her and eliminate her as soon as their next elimination ceremony, or 2nd outcome where she is antagonist's victim, aka Scary Girl undeservingly gets eliminated for something she didn't do.

TD fandom will be in despair if she is an early boot
Nichelle
Whoa there 5YearsOnCoast? Nichelle, who many people thought that she is going to be main antagonist of the season, is going early? Well I run out of contestants who I think could be an early boots, so out of the remaining contestants, I think Nichelle doesn't have a lot of chance to last longer. She is missing from few team screenshots (tho not as bad as Caleb) and I believe that she could be decoy antagonist, aka we thought she is going to be main antagonist bit then replaced by an actual antagonist). Heck we don't even know if she really acts like a villain. She could just be a jerk at worst.
Is there anything to save her from being a possibly being an early boot? Yes, her interactions with Julia, by looks at their interactions, it looks like it could be among more important interactions in the season. Now whenever they will be friends or enemies is unknown (but I am leaning to latter) and I imagine that one of them will try to backstab the other
Possible reason for her elimination - I imagine the reason she will get eliminated is because someone backstabs her and puts blame on her for team losing the challenge. And her "social influence" on her teammates won't save her.

Things ain't looking good for Nichelle
Damien
Frankly I don't know why he is going to be an early boot, but I don't think he will have major interactions with anyone or be the main antagonist or even a main comic relief. We know very little about him.
Possible reason for his elimination- Franky I don't know. Maybe he becomes too injured to continue to play the game. Shortest section for the new contestant so far. Can't say I'm shocked.

This guy won't last for too long
Midway boots/Wildcards
Millie
She see seems like a shy person and looks like she is going to be friends with Priya. She would probably last some time on the show, outlasting few early boots, but I doubt that she would reach finale or even merge.
Possible reason for her elimination: I am not sure, either she screws up the challenge, or main antagonist had a hand in her elimination.

Don't see her last long
Wayne and Ray
Now it's time for these 2 hockey dudes. They are probably the only contestants (so far) that probably know each other before the season began (I mean just look at their matching shirts). And we see a lot of scenes in trailers where they are next to each other. They are likely going to be the LGBT couple of the season, or heck maybe they even became a couple before the season started. Now they will probably have some different traits between them (for example: Wayne is possibly smarter than Raj, but more shyer than him). They can possibly even reach merge, but I don't think either of them will reach finale.
Possible reason for their elimination: I do think that they could be eliminated in double elimination. I mean the 26 episode order is likely to be two 13 episode seasons and first season has 16 contestants. There has to be 2 double eliminations. And if you look at how they are the most glued pair out of all contestants (they were even grouped in the promo flyer), it wouldn't be to shocking to see them eliminate both in same episode. I can see one of them get voted off either because of screw up, victim of an antagonist or deemed a threat. And the other one would be sad that his partner got eliminated and quits the show so he could spent some time with his new love partner.

The two glued friends/lovers
Julia
There are 2 predictions on what her personality could be: She could be a chill girl and smarter than Lindsay, or she could be a some sort of an antagonist. And yeah she will have interactions with Nichelle, they are either going to be friends or enemies (more likely the latter), and one of these two girls will backstab each other. But the problem is tho I have no clue on who is going to be antagonist, so whenever Julia will try to betray Nichelle or not is an enigma. It seems that she is a "wannabe influencer" and maybe less known than Nichelle (if what Nichelle said was true). I could see Julia trying to lead her team to victory. So she outlasts few campers, but it is unlikely for her to reach finale (tho she still has higher chance to reach finale than let's say Caleb or even Nichelle).
Possible reason for her elimination: She is eliminated for screwing up challenge (if it is pre-merge), deemed as a threat (if she reached merge), or a "true hidden antagonist" eliminates her. She could try to warn others about "hidden antagonist", but fails, and at best very few would raise suspicion.

Failure? Or an unexpected success?
Bowie
Hey, it is Leonard's long lost twin brother. This dude looks like he is going to be "fashionista" of the season and seems that he is attracted to boys (maybe too girls too? By looks of it he seems to be getting along with New! Emma). I imagine that he isn't going to be an early boot, but will he reach finale? Ummmmm....
Possible reason for his elimination: Frankly, I don't know, but most likely he screws up in challenge. Reason for his possible elimination is really an enigma.

He would be sticking on for some time
Axel
If I had written this post few days ago, she would be a guaranteed main character, but after more trailers have shown up, I'm split about it. But first what could be her personality be like? She seems that she comes from military camp, she looks strong, fierce and cold. I don't think she likes interaction with others too much. Would she be the main antagonist, or at least secondary antagonist like Jo? Would she be anti-hero of the season like how Duncan, Shawn and Valentina Escobar were? Will she be similar to Eva? But after watching trailers, I think that she is either going far, or is an early boot. But you may ask why an early boot? Well considering that she appears the least out of all her teammates in trailers, isn't giving her good looks on staying long. Seriously only times she was seen was when teams were formed, when "zombies" appear (and it looks like this appears when Chris introduces her, because that type of the building is nowhere on the island, or at least as far as our knowledge goes) and when she has camouflage on her face. Besides that she was never seen with her team, besides when teams were formed, but of course she could be "lone-wolf" type where she doesn't like interacting with others and that is the reason we don't see her much with her teammates, but could potentially develop and be more outgoing... that is if she isn't an early boot. But hey I doubt that she is going to be the very first boot like Caleb.
Possible reason for her elimination: She either eliminates due to her anger issues/bad social skills early in the game, or will get eliminated somewhere in the merge because she was deemed too much of a threat. There is no in-between for her. Tho I imagine that it would be a shocking twist if she was an early boot, because many people thought that she has the highest chance to reach finale, but on the other hand it would disappoint many people.

An early boot or goes far. No in between
Main characters
Ripper
Ripper looks grumpy, but he could possibly the "macho with a heart" of this season. And you can guess why he is called Ripper (hint: He rips off his shirt and rips a fart). I do think that he is going to be a main comic relief of the season, just like how Owen, Lightning and Sugar were in their debut seasons. This gives him an advantage. And maybe even a finalist? The only other possible main comic reliefs of this season are Bowie and maaaaaaybe Scary Girl. Unlikely for him to be an antagonist, but not entirely impossible.
Possible reason for his elimination: If he doesn't reach finale, then the reason for his elimination, is that he fails in a challenge and is automatically eliminated.

Our (likely) main comic relief for the season
MK
There are 2 possible paths for her. She is going to be the next Shawn or the next Zeke (I hope she doesn't become a ghoul. I had two many contestants turning into freaks of nature) .She is either going to be a protagonist of the season, or a "hidden antagonist with ulterior motive". And I do wonder what her "ulterior motive" is, because I think that out of all contestants, she probably has the highest chance that has "ulterior motive" (I made a theory few months ago about what the "ulterior motive" could be). But seriously her personality is an enigma. Most common prediction is that she is a horror nerd (and I guess that she is possibly the closest example of a nerd in season and all previous seasons had nerd characters). And what is her real name, because MK looks like short name of something. Will it play into plot?
Possible reason for her elimination: Reason for her elimination is about as mysterious as her personality.

A true enigma
New! Emma
Ah yes New! Emma. Not the same as person as Noah's girlfriend and Kitty's sister. But what is she like? She is probably the "perfectionist", aka gets A+ grades has many talents like she plays piano well, horserides and is gymnastic. Is she a nervous wreck under her smile? Who knows? But why I believe that she is going to last until at least merge? Well I don't see mush against for her to be eliminated, at least before merge.
Possible reason for her elimination: I don't really know, but in merge maybe she fails a challenge, and is in utter shock and gets eliminated.

A potential finalist?
Chase
You might be wondering on why I think Chase will go far and even reach finale. Well besides him appearing a lot of in trailers, he seems to be "the normal guy" of the new cast. And "normal guys" do tend to reach at least merge in their debut seasons (Trent, Mike and Dave). But of course he would have probably have some other stuff about him. Like maybe he is a daredevil/stuntman. And I can also see him forming a relationship with Priya. He may be possibly be main protagonist of the season.
Possible reason for his elimination: He is either deemed as a threat or is automatically eliminated.

Our main man
Priya
When the cast was first revealed, many people thought that she will be the "new Zoey", the "normal girl" of the cast and in some cases even an early boot, but that doesn't seem to be the case. She seems like she wouldn't be so shy and could be fierce. And yeah it is likely that she ends up in relationship with Chase and make friends on the show (example: Millie). Has potential to be the main protagonist of the season.
Possible reason for her elimination: I frankly don't know.

It would suck if she is an early boot
4. 2nd season?
So early in 2021 it was announced that TD was revived with 26 episode order, and there were speculations if it is going to be 1 season with 26 episodes or two 13 episode seasons, but I am leaning towards the latter. Terry even hinted at this. But of course who would be the cast for the new season? Most likely the new cast. But I don't think everyone will return in 2nd season.
But who do I think will return in "2nd season"? Well if you look at pattern for TDI and ROTI contestants, most contestants who return are mergers (except Eva) and few non-mergers (tho Sam is the only non-merged ROTI contestant to return). Plus I imagine that some of the contestants who were early boots, return and be main antagonist in "2nd" season and show their true potential. So how many I think will return? Well lowest number I could think is 12 and the highest is 14. So these are contestants I think will return:
  1. Chase
  2. Priya
  3. MK
  4. Ripper
  5. New! Emma
  6. Axel
  7. Bowie
  8. Julia
  9. Wayne
  10. Raj
  11. Nichelle
  12. Zee
  13. Scary Girl?
  14. Damien?
I think with these 2 season we will determine who are the main characters of the new cast and also who is "fodder" and who are the "middle characters".
Well those are my predictions for TDI 2023. What are your thoughts on this post? Thank you for reading.
