Chapter 8:
While the Imperium's general policy toward integration was to keep the native governments comparable to their preintegration states, exceptions were made at times. Such exceptions usually had to do with how much resistance an area had mounted prior to its absorption into the Imperium, but at times they were political in nature. The plan to partition Earth was unique however, in that it would be set in motion prior to the invasion. There were several reasons for this, though it primarily boiled down to perceived insults over territory size and the potential threats of certain military powers should they remain united.

The Siloam was an Israeli nuclear submarine stationed off of Israel's southern mediterranean coast. Captained by Shoshana Mizrahi and crewed by 35 sailors and their officers it sat ever vigilant as Israel's silent guardian and if need be, its avenger of blood. So it was that when Captain Mizrahi and her Chief Mate {First Mate} Eli Mhamid each turned their keys that the full weight of their actions fell upon The Siloam and her crew.
It had always been a possibility that they'd be called upon to launch their nuclear payload. There had always even been a chance of having to nuke their own homeland; their own families. They'd all accepted that possibility as a concept when they signed on, but now that concept was reality. So many innocents had died, had been slain, on their own initiative. The immense weight of their actions were exclusively their own.
Everything was silent in the immediate aftermath of the launch. Everyone was running on autopilot, the weight of 4 cities worth of lives pressing on their chests. As per procedure the Siloam quickly entered a 30 second dive and began to accelerate toward the drop off zone {4000 meters or deeper} to the east of the site of the old Uluburun relict. As the deepest portion of the Mediterranean within the vicinity of Israel, it would make the perfect place to hide from the Shil'vati's orbital strikes. However in their haste they failed to account for the Shil'vati calculating their most likely line of retreat.
About 15 minutes after launching its payload, the sea directly above the Siloam was pummeled by one of the Shil'vati's own retaliatory strikes. The strike instantly boiled away the surface water and the resulting pressure waves smashed into the ship's haul and exposed it to open air, leaving its haul groaning under the massive fluctuations in surface pressure. Then as the outward pressure bubble of rapidly expanding liquid vapor gave way, the forcibly parted waves surged back into place, causing an even worse series of pressure fluctuations. The outer haul of the Siloam screamed as air vented and she was rolled by the tides.
Inside the Siloam countless alarms blared helplessly as her outer haul gave way at points. Desperate crew attempted to respond, only for her body to jerk and roll from impacts. Those not somehow fastened down being slammed into the walls and ceilings. The screams of desperate men and women echoed in sealed off rooms, unable to reach each other, and all the while the Mediterranean forced its way in.
Captain Mizrahi and her crew were amongst the best however and so when the worst of the impacts subsided they managed to get her upright. They struggled to seal the Siloam's bulkheads, and despite having severe casualties, they just barely managed to pressurize her enough to attempt a resurface. Left hanging between the choice of an emergency breach or attempting to limp forward with a compromised ship and crippled crew, Mizrahi chose the lives of her crew and carried out an emergency breach. As soon as they'd surfaced they desperately made a break for the nearest friendly port city of Haifa.

The Glint Bat was a 20 woman orbital bombardment vessel assigned to the Israel theater. Alone, he was capable of targeting up to 5 surface targets at once. In response to the Siloam's strike on Shil'vati landing zones, he was partnered with the Drelcast in the Palestinian theatre, the Nicara in the Lebanese theater, the Light Hoof in the Jordanian theater, the Ender in the Syrian theater, the Storm Gunner in the Egyptian theater, and the All Claw in the Cyprian theater. After collecting themselves, the crew of each coordinated, calculated, and then retaliated by simultaneously firing along a set of 35 potential escape vectors that the Siloam was likely to take relative to potential escape velocity. Ultimately, it was the Glint Bat that hit true, actually managing to succeed in severely damaging the vessel.
As the enemy's submersible mobile weapons platform surfaced the initial response of the Glint Bat's Gunnery officer was to order a finishing blow.
Her voice dripped with venom as she started to give the order.
"Fire again."
However before it could be acted on Captain P'teram spoke: "Belay that order! You are not to destroy that vessel, Fire Controller."
Battered and all but beaten, the Siloam slowly began limping her way as fast as she could to Haifa. All the while, like unholy vultures above a dying animal, the fleet in orbit tracked her course, and upon discerning her destination to be the soon to be occupied port of Haifa, dispatched orders to the nearest army group in the area to intercept them upon arrival. Princess “Shash’ara,” in no uncertain terms, had given orders regarding the live capture of these war criminals. She was very clear that she was going to literally hang someone for the nuclear screw up, and she was going to make it very public. It wasn’t personal, it was just…
Captain P'teram felt the pressure in her jaw from where she had been subconsciously gritting her teeth in thought. She found it took far more effort to stop doing than it otherwise should have. No, these primitives had just mass murdered their country women and men under a flag of truce: It was extremely personal. Israel had submitted to the Imperial throne; The war was concluded before these mass murders launched their cruel assault. These barbaric savages would pay for their treachery. The fact that it was also an order to insure that fact was merely a happy coincidence.

Sergeant Qik Trenn had the misfortune of happening to be facing in the direction of the South when the submarine's payload hit. As such she had seen the detonations from Jaffa (92.8 km/57.6 miles), Ashdod (131.1 km/82.46 miles), Ashkelon (146.6 km/ 91.09 miles), and Gaza (152 km/ 94.45 miles) (the absolute minimum visibility of 200 miles- from the two earliest nukes, they have since gotten bigger). It had been so sudden and bright, her helmet barely compensated for it in time, leaving her vision plagued by bright spots, but still able to see the 4 rising mushrooms of death. It was as horrifying as it was recognizable, and in the end the delayed identification supplied by her helmet feed proved entirely redundant:

Qik had never seen a nuclear detonation in person before. They were a weapon resigned to barbarians and the territories beyond the reach of civilization's veil. No one, in all the civilized galaxy, had seen one deployed since the Roach Wars. The realization had left her shuddering in frozen silence, her words cut off and never completed as she watched the 4 mushrooms rise into a form that had once been relocated to history vids and archive footage. She could still remember the vague sense of vacant recognition as her squad turned to look in the same direction and froze as well. Every Imperial knew what the return of nuclear warfare entailed.
Unlike humanity, which had so narrowly pulled itself back from the brink of full-scale Planetary Nuclear Genocide, the Imperium had experienced it; Had, had it inflicted upon them by an uncaring enemy multiple times, across numerous worlds. The Imperium Still had the glassed border worlds, both Colonies and Hearts, turned into blackened glass and molten slag. The Imperium Still had the cultural memory of billions of women, men, and children slaughtered without so much as one word towards negotiations. The Imperium Still had the original recordings of countless families screaming and pleading for help into the void as Roach fleets descended upon their defenseless worlds, because no one in the wider Imperium knew! No one knew- until two weeks later when Imperial patrols found them glassing a heart system... It was only when chasing them back to their systems that the carnage was uncovered… It wasn't until 2 years later, long after the war itself had officially concluded, that the tortured screams and pleas of the dead reached Imperial space. That's when the doomed communication broadcasts reached the nearest living outpost- the cruel reality of living in a universe with no FTL communication.
When the spell broke and Qik and her Women could move once again, it was as though they were awakening from a dream. Gone was the security of the Galaxy. Shattered was the Imperial peace. Stolen was the honor of their fallen comrades- relinquished to a cruel fate. Only one thought had prevailed in their new state: ROACHES- and The Imperium had given it back to the Roaches. So, when the order came through to intercept the crew of very vessel responsible, and seize them before they could scurry away, there was no hesitation.

Haifa was a beautiful city, and to be honest, were it just her and were it not for the time sensitive nature of her priority orders Sargent Qik Trenn would be seriously tempted to take the scenic route by the river. As it stood however she and her girls were en route to the port at breakneck speed.
Qik didn't personally know any of the women that were assigned to the nuked zones but her blood boiled for retribution all the same. It was monstrous that a sapient being would launch such a strike under flag of truce. The burning was made all the more intense by the fact that said individuals were supposed to be members of a legal military institution. True, that particular military institution was a barbarian institution, but there had been some assumption of some code of conduct- not this.
Qik shook her head to clear the growing disgust from her consciousness and slapped the side of the APC she was currently mag-locked to the side of. Her right hand clenched around the sidebar in silent rage as she shouted a clear and calm command at the driver: "Pick it up! We don't want to let these whores slip our grasp!"
The driver didn't say anything in response, and the vehicle itself remained it's typical, eerily silent self, but the speed gauge linked to Qik's suit's inertial compensator spiked into a brutal crimson red as the driver floored the accelerator. The already mighty wind turned feral, and hit like a brick to the tits. Were it not for her right hand, and both feet being magnetically sealed she would definitely be thrown from the vehicle and splatter against whatever she was unfortunate enough to land on. Still, gone was the distracting recognition of the city's beauty, and gone were the crippling thoughts of rage. She was left with clarity of mind and purpose in the moment, and that- that was a blessing.

The Siloam and her crew slid as silently as they could into Haifa port, a sickly shaking hum racking the once mighty vessel's battered frame. With her battered instruments and periscope as good as crunched to the void and back, they were relying on Able Seamen Zvi Aaron and Jonathan Sarfati to relay visual and key navigation information from the surface deck. With Haifa Naval Base being quiet to coded communication and smoke arising from the area where it should have been the plan was to slip into the cargo area of the port and hurriedly disembark under what little cover of darkness remained. The sun still had yet to fully end the night and it was beginning to turn the far edge of the horizon behind the Bahai Shrine a lighter hue of purple.
As they drew closer the shapes of the cranes, typically used to load and unload cargo containers, loomed like metal skeletons in the morning mist. Alongside them was the telltale form of cargo ships, no doubt hurriedly abandoned mid-reload due to this Shil'vati Imperium's invasion. Jonathan couldn't help but hope that a skeleton crew had stayed behind on the docks themselves though. It was born equally from a concern about the ability to disembark, as the Submarine didn't carry an onboard gangway, and the consideration that over half the remaining crew would definitely need assistance disembarking due to injury. Sadly that didn't appear to be the case. As things came into greater focus, the docks didn't display a sign of life as insignificant as a cigarette glow or even the hum of electricity.
Fortunately for them, one of the nearby cargo ships appeared to have gangways on both her starboard and port sides at a workable height. Thankfully they wouldn't be forced to beach the Siloam and pray they didn't capsize. Under the keen eyes of her two watchmen, the Siloam slowly but surely maneuvered parallel to the larger vessel and decelerated to a stop. The Siloam had intentionally remained slightly distant from the gangway out of regard for her own partially submerged bulk, but remained within grappling distance. The two men started fastening a pair of grappling ropes to the most sturdy looking section of the Siloam's surviving railing in preparation for an unassisted disembarkment. Then with silent curses under their breaths they each swung their respective hooks at the gangway. Both hooks caught and the two men pulled their ropes taut and called in a successful docking.

Qik had watched silently from her position behind as the enemy transferred themselves from their original ship, through a larger docked vessel, and finally onto the docks themselves. Many were leaning on one another for support and the entire process was slow moving.
"Make sure you're set to stun; they all need to make it to trial," Qik reminded her girls as the last of the enemy helped each other onto the docks. They'd been authorized to use stun level 4 on Humans, same as a full grown Shil woman, which considering their size was probably overkill.
