Mieko rye

coming of age novels, not fantasy

2023.12.21 00:53 seewhatsup_mm coming of age novels, not fantasy

hi,
i like books that talk about serious subjects, like the bell jar, prep by curtis sittenfeld, catcher in the rye, and heaven by mieko kawakami to name a few ive read recently and enjoyed. i feel like most ya is fantasy stuff like harry potter and while i have nothing against that im in the mood for more of a deep read right now. a lot of japanese literature is veryyy deep and serious (just my opinion!) while prep has some drama and humor (if youve read it yk what i mean) so if anyone has recs that balance more deep subjects with humor and interesting plot events that would be appreciated!

2023.11.04 02:44 lauracoptero a book like osamu dazai's schoolgirl?

i read it when i was 14/15 and it's been stuck in my mind ever since. just a short and emotional book with a teen whose life sucks. the virgin suicides, heaven (mieko kawakami) type of beat? idk. not the catcher in the rye and speak though, i didn't rly like those books. i want it to be heart wrenchingly written. im in my insufferable pretentious teen emo phase (sorry) and dostoevsky & others isnt enough bc although i relate to some extent there's only old people as main characters 😭😭
