2024.02.03 18:41 rnglss What was your GERD diagnosis experience?

For me, it started in late November this past year. Just in time for the holidays and my birthday of COURSE.
I felt aggressive heart palpitations on and off which triggered a series of in and out of the ER,and seeing my GP who told me it was just caffeine and anxiety.
Fast forward 3 months, I was told the palps and burning were GERD, given PPIs and I took antibiotics for a suspected lung infection (nodules on lung from CT scan labeled ‘likely inflammatory’, also returned enlarged spleen and esophagitis). I also have this dull “pulled muscle” feeling in my neck’s lower left side (where it intersects with the trap/ scapula) for months. I’m just hoping it’s not anything worse like cancer.
My doctor is young, inexperienced and quite absent so I’m doing a lot of the self research. I have Kaiser and they’re bad tbh. I was on 40mg twice daily for omeprazole (self administered, he suggested 20 a day and it did nothing), but was so lethargic and anxious I couldn’t function. I’m now 2 days off that and am trying 20mg famotidine twice daily. Symptoms have subsided minus aggressive all day fatigue, occasional globus and coughing up green phlegm every morning.
Anyone else get GERD out of nowhere from a random upper respiratory infection?
I’m pushing for an endo in a few weeks, and will also ask for another CT scan to check my lungs / chest again. If my spleen is still enlarged or those nodules are still there or larger, we have a more complex problem at hand.

2023.12.05 09:57 MrBegorra PSA: Focus Atlas Gravel bikes

Hi, I am just posting this as PSA as I feel that there should be a WARNING LABEL attached to all Focus Atlas Gravel sold warning the buyer not to attach a front carrier to the forks of the bikes. Especially seeing as a lot of the photographs and videos on their social media posts show a front carrier attached to the front fork being used on the Atlas gravel bikes. The main reasons I bought the Focus Atlas 6.7 gravel bike is that it has so many attachments points built into both the frame and fork, and I could attach a front carrier to the fork.
I had a very serious accident while on a bikepacking trip in Finland at the end of September 2023, which resulted in me ending up in a Finnish hospital with a broken right Clavicle and a 2 cm crush injury to my right Scapula and many other injuries.
I was using the 7Roads Front Rack attached to the front fork of my Focus Atlas 6.7 gravel bike, as seen on lot's of Focus bikes social media posts and videos.
While descending downhill on a gravel road, the nut that is built into the front fork and to which the Front Rack was attached, ripped out, causing the front rack to drop forward and lock the front wheel up and throw me over the handle bars causing my injuries. I am posting this as a warning to owners and potential buyers of the Focus Atlas Gravel bike range to prevent future accidents like the one I had. Happy adventure biking!

2023.11.06 17:22 Xceptionless Misery

“Get some rest, we’re out at 0600 tomorrow.” Sedric said. “We’re going to pay a visit to this mysterious ‘Port Sparx’.”
“One moment Captain, before you go.” Kora interjected. “We just received the evidence from Toblerittles that you requested two weeks ago. It’s down in forensics. I figured you and your crew would want to take a quick look before you go?”
Fluke slid back down into his chair with a sigh. “So much for an early night.”
“Maybe there is something interesting in there.” Mason said with a shrug.
“Maybe, but I don’t think it will matter much to me.” Fluke said as the Captain, Tark, and Penny walked out of the squad room, Penny carrying Boo-Boo.
*******************************************************
“Alright, What do we got?” Sedric asked as they approached a table, filled with small piles and sealed plastic bags.
He picked up a file folder from the table labeled “Phatness Spa” and began thumbing through it. “It seems there was some sort of cult being run out of the Spa locations. Strange. It seemed they collected fats from ‘Customers’ and rendered it down for use in something called ‘Spells’. It looks like they were trying to activate some ancient Tech. Apparently, the ‘Chanting’ that Cortana picked up was calling to ‘The coming of the Lord of Sin.’ Strange.”
“Boo-Boo wants to know if there was any ancient relics there?” Penny said.
“Boo-Boo.. We know you can talk. You don’t have to go through Penny.” Sedrick said.
“She knows.” Penny said with a smile. “Boo-Boo likes to creep you out a bit.”
Sedric rolled his eyes. “Yes, here it is.” He picked up a small iron cauldron. “This was on top of some alter that they had hidden in a secret basement temple.”
Boo-boo reached out and touched the Cauldron, and the strange blue glow in her eyes flashed for a moment, then went back to normal. Sedric was almost certain that the bear smiled at him. He resisted the shivers that ran up his spine.
“Anyway..” Sedric said, moving on down the line to the next pile of goods. “It looks like Bambi/Sandy helped the larger force take down some corruption on Toblerittles. Apparently, the local Chief was super dirty, and was almost always carrying this.” Sedric picked up a thin, but long plastic bag. Inside seemed to be a large sharp hair pin. It seemed to be silver, with a deep blue stone at it’s top.
Boo-Boo recognized it immediately. She wondered where it had gotten too. The plastic bag was no barrier to her, as she touched it. Her eyes flairing briefly before it no longer had any importance to her.
“Anything you want to keep?” Sedric asked the little bear.
“Already got it, Thanks.” The little sythisized voice came from the toy.
“I’m too old for this shit.” Sedric shook his head.
Boo-Boo and Penny’s bond increases to 5
*Bing!* “Hee-Hee, I’ve got a message!” Came the pre-programmed sound from Boo-Boo, followed by various notification sounds as they all received a Message.

“I’ve run it through every scan I can think of.” Cortana said as they were on their way. “It seems to be a simple audio file. I don’t detect any harmful sub-harmonics, or tricks of any kind. It seems to be a simple audio file. Would you like me to play it for you?”
“If you think it’s safe. Go ahead.” Sedric said easing into his chair.
“Aye captain. Beginning playback.” Cortana reported.

The audio started with an old classical song, It sounded as if someone were listening too it in a large room. After a few moments, the volume was reduced, and there were the sounds of movement. Finally, a nervous, seemingly timid voice spoke. “A-are you there?”
“Always.” a second voice said, very near by the recording microphone. “I’m always watching you. I’m your friend.”
“Heh heh.. Ya.. I know.” the first voice said with a nervous laugh. “Are you sure about this? This will work?”
“MMMmmm Hmmmm..” came the affirmative response. “Tell me. Do you know what Fate is?”
“A construct of the mind, lending credence to ones desires, providing support to ones own ideas, facilitating a feeling of justification in spite of the evident probability of failure?” came a seemingly studied response.
“No.” came the voice, with a little chuckle. “It’s where Chance meets Opportunity. Your opportunity is now, and you have a chance to make it happen. It’s all lining up. Captain Sedric Pimento is forming an interesting little squad over at the OPD. Should be of great interest to you. Firstly, that lovely Kahroo TuJak. You tried to wipe out his entire people as a sacrifice years ago, before I found you. He is there, you could finish the job. Then, Penny and Boo-Boo. You’ve been chasing around that Bear for a long-long time, Collecting her leavings, tinkering with them. You’ve made a career out of it alone. Silly that your answer is simply giving it back.. Then we move to Count Scapula. The Corpse Doc. How come HE gets the power you’ve sought after for so long? That criminal? That monster? Hehehe. Makes you seethe doesn’t it? Then there is that Octopodan, Tofu. He was the one that nearly shut down your little sydicate early. He got away too soon. He remembers too much. Finally there is your old friend Tark.. Family even, if you want to look at it that way. Always the Hero, always the beacon of hope. Always casting a shadow over you. This is your chance. This is your opportunity to show them that you’re not just some flunky. If you complete this, they will have to give you respect. You will have REAL power. They will see.” The new voice finished talking.
“Why do I have to go this far? Why the end?” The first voice asked hesitantly.
“Nothing real and meaningful comes easily. A Sacrifice is required.” The New voice explained. “Most of the time, that sacrifice is time. But, you’re in a hurry. So the Sacrifice must be a bit more… Meaningful.. “ The New voice trailed off in laughter, strange, maniacal laughter, that faded out, ending the recording..

2023.09.24 03:08 AtmosphereKlutzy Mild injuries that never seem to go away?

I’m really young (20) and am frustrated that these injuries constantly halt my training. I’ve never been injury free in the last two years—when the pain goes away in one part of my body, I get a new one somewhere else, and this has made it really difficult to balance my training routine. Basically, I always seem to get these low-grade strains that have consistent but mild pain over many months. Then, what usually happens is that I stumble on a specific exercise that works the joint in just the right way and boom, the pain is magically gone within days. I’ve had this sort of injury twice in my hamstring, vastus medialis, shoulder, and right now (I think) my left rhomboid.
My upper back injury has been going on for 3 months now:
-The pain doesn’t bother me at all when I’m not flexing the muscle or exercising (as was the case for all the past injuries listed above), hence why I label it minor. It almost doesn’t bother me at all in daily life, and this is why I’m so exasperated that it won’t go away
-It’s definitely not tendinitis bc the injury was acute and because I’ve had tendinitis before and know what it feels like
-The muscle is not tender when I touch it
-Rolling/massaging provides immediate relief, but it’s usually back within 20 mins
-Scapula retraction while torso upright triggers no pain (like scapula pull-ups and pull-ups); rowing movements hurt, even with no weight
-I originally injured this after doing a on rep max weighted pull-up of +80lbs, which is inconsistent with it not hurting during pull-ups but during rowing movements
-I’ve been consistently mobilizing the area without going into pain, and even doing pull-ups, but even then it seems to not be improving
I hear about people getting full blown tears having to take off and rehab for months on end, but something that feels as minor as my injury shouldn’t be sidelining me for as long as 3-4 months.
Why does this happen and what kind of injury might it be? Why do I seem to be so sensitive to injures? Today, I was doing some crawling movements and now my anterior delt also hurts :( I’ve been to the PT for other injuries but I’ve found it to be ineffective cause the pain is always triggered in a inconsistent manner.

2022.05.30 20:08 greenfirefly120 Just need to rant about medical professionals....

I might delete this later but I just needed to get this off my chest. So I finally had my rheumatology appointment and to no surprise because I'm not super flexible and instead all tight and stiff, I wasn't diagnosed with hypermobility (he noted my hamstrings tendons are severely tight....not looking forward to trying to fix that somehow lmao).
I'm kind of just burnt out dealing with medical professionals at this point (though thankfully have still been referred for treatment through other avenues). I've found there is this sort of frustrating game you have to play sometimes where you almost can't act too knowledgeable about what is happening to you - I have had professionals ask me if I've been 'googling' in this dismissive way because I mention terms like 'winged scapula' like....if you are going to have ridiculously long 6 month physio waiting lists you don't think I'm going to try and find some answers out myself? Should I not know how to label my own anatomy unless you tell me what it is? Do you think googling is a sign of the anxiety/stress/depression that medical professionals are all too eager to dismiss me with? Often feel this is especially the case being a young mid-twenties woman, like yeah I do cry when I talk about my symptoms because they are very much affecting my quality of life to the point I've had to go part time at work so sorry for daring to show some human emotion in your consultation room. On top of that, my principal GP is so condescending and dismissive who will just fob me off with tablets and repeatedly try to act like I'm a troublemaker because 'the scans haven't shown anything so there's nothing I can do'. I specifically request to speak to locum GPs instead and I was lucky to get one who agreed to do the referrals for me. It's not like I can change surgery because speaking to people I know, the other ones aren't any better and I don't trust my GP admin to transfer my records properly, the amount of times I've had letters from private physio go missing, no follow up from test results until I ring and even cancelling one of my referrals without telling me causing me to wait even longer.
How long is it going to be until medical professionals finally understand hypermobility is on a spectrum and doesn't always present as just being super flexible? How long until GPs don't just give up because the scans don't show anything and dismiss the pain as stress and anxiety? How long will it be before getting the right treatment doesn't depend on the luck of having a professional who will take the time to listen and make an effort? I'm just really tired of it all.

2022.03.27 15:57 Ok-Patience-2834 A sub for a philosophical and ethical discussion centered around a hit and run accident I had on 3/10/22 where I almost died

I was skateboarding 🛹 circa 3AM on a flat longboard while carrying a 4k camcorder with a tripod attempting to record a stunt called The Superman when I was hit by a pickup truck driver who ran and did not call for help. I was alone and nearly bled to death while leaving a six foot long trail of blood. I'm an animator and I was planning on using the footage to rotoscope myself to be super hero flying through some clouds. To prove this isn't some machiavellian excuse for disguising insurance fraud I'm going to describe exactly how I was going to do this animation.
First I was going to use VLC Media Player with Scene Filter on and set up, in advanced settings, to write an image sequence capture to be automatically saved, in chronological numbered order, to a selected folder 📂 on my PC before restarting VLC Media Player and playing the video in its entirety without pausing it at any point. Next I was going to open Vector Magic Desktop Edition to bulk image process the entire folder 📂 with custom colors selected before making another, correctly labeled as vector graphics, folder to export the SVG files to and running it. Upon doing that I was going to make yet another, correctly labeled as PNG vector graphics, folder before opening SVG2PNG and bulk converting the SVG folder to be written to the PNG vector graphics folder at roughly 3000x3000. After that I was going to open Autodesk Sketchbook and use Flipbook to import the PNG vector graphics as an image sequence on the foreground before erasing everything but me super hero flying. Following that I'd repeat the entire process with some flying through clouds ⛅ stock footage on Storyblocks that doesn't have plane wings in it. Upon getting a full PNG vector graphics folder of the cloud video 📹 I was going to add each frame to the midground layer one by one until I'd have a finished HD 1080p animation at 24fps to export as MP4. I had that planned out ahead of time before the stunt.
I do not wish any physical or psychological trauma upon the driver who hit and ran me so I request that readers be civil and not discuss any violent or otherwise disturbing fantasies. The accident was captured at three angles and my camcorder is currently in police custody as evidence for the crime so I have not personally seen the footage. As far as I know the driver is still at large but I hope the plates were captured in the footage so that the driver can be put behind bars and be forced to pay, at the very least, for my hospital bills. I almost died from blood loss due to my arteries in my right arm being pierced from multiple bone fractures which included my scapula so I could not move my torso. My ribs cracked and pierced my right lung 🫁 so I required a chest tube siphoning fluids from my lung that were filling my chest area as the lung was healing. I requested, being a musician with morbid curiosities, if I could keep the tube to turn it into a talk box so I could make Peter Frampton guitar 🎸 solos with a tube that siphoned my bloody lung juices. The doctor agreed 👍 but when time came for it to be removed nine days in it was the nurses that had the final word and they threw the tube out on account of the hospital's reputation. I argued for an entire hour with them over it because, the way I saw it, I almost died to get that tube. I posted the story to AITA asking if I was the asshole for arguing with the nurses, and my family in the room, about them throwing out my bloody tube despite getting approval from my doctor in Advanced Care to go home with it. They removed my post for violating Rule 7, no interpersonal conflict, then when I appealed it they changed their tune to Rule 5, no discussion of violence, arguing that commenters would say incendiary things towards the driver such as violent or disturbing fantasies of revenge. I don't see why they can't just moderate the comments section but I think that they just don't want to admit that they were wrong so they just perform mental gymnastics in order to deflect my post removal appeal. Assholes.

2021.03.31 02:28 leerylizard A reasoned case for bigfoot

Edit: Looking back at the Krantz book, the numbers I used for Patty's measurements are John Green's republished by Krantz, and scaled down 10% due to the higher estimate of height used by Green.
I posted this elsewhere earlier and thought it would be appropriate here also.

Introduction

From my review of the available information, I believe sasquatch (aka bigfoot) is a real biological creature. By 'sasquatch' I mean: A hairy bipedal great ape, most typically 6 to 8 feet tall, said to inhabit North American forests.
I previously believed that sasquatches were mythical and pseudoscientific. After looking at the evidence with a critical mind, I have changed my view. I have read books and studies from what I would consider a neutral view (Sykes), a skeptical view (Daegling), and an advocate's view (Krantz, Meldrum, Munn). I've included some of them as sources.
I didn't agree with everything in the advocates' writing. Krantz, in particular, makes some speculations and uses numbers I consider dubious. I found Daegling's skeptical arguments to be circumstantial (i.e. "this is how X could be a hoax", and never "this is why X is a hoax"). I cite source chapters only, as I read these as ebooks and page numbers are inconsistent.
First I'll outline the case for the existence of sasquatch as a real biological species, and then address the most important objections.

1) Physical Evidence

Footprints

There have been hoaxed footprints, but there have also been others that are harder to explain, as described below. Bear footprints have claws, are not as long as footprints attributed to sasquatches, and bears cannot replicate the stride length when walking on hind legs. Human footprints are outside the dimensions of purported sasquatch prints (Krantz, Chapter 3; Meldrum, Introduction).
There are hundreds of reported trackways displaying a foot similar to a human foot but approximately 1.5x longer and 2x wider. The toes are more uniform in size than a human's (i.e. less difference in size between the big toe and pinky toe), and the heel is proportionally wider. There is no arch. The innermost toe is the biggest. This contrasts with the size and shape of bear prints, which are wider, shorter, and usually have the innermost toe as the smallest. Trackways show a longer stride than is easy for a human to make, and sometimes extend for miles. They often occur in locations with low potential for discovery by humans (Krantz, Chapter 3).
The footprints considered genuine show varied toe positions between steps, sometimes show gouges caused by toes digging into the ground on steep uphills, and sometimes show partial imprints of just the front half of the foot. From such prints the foot is concluded to be flat and have flexion at the mid-foot, similar to a gorilla's. The mid-sole flexion often creates a mid-sole mound from the front part's push-off (Meldrum, Introduction).
Footprints sometimes demonstrate splaying of the sole, such that the edges of the impression overhang. This is possible because the sole retracts as the weight upon it is relieved (Krantz, Chapter 3).
Some fresh prints in suitable substrates show dermal ridges that under closer examination display healed cuts. Fingerprint experts have attested to the convincing appearance of the dermal ridges, and were able to easily recognize a fake control (Krantz, Chapter 3).
Some trackways show step spacing that would not be possible for a human to mimic even without bulky prosthetic feet. These are presumably made by running sasquatches. There is an account of a hoaxer running downhill with feet placed backwards to simulate a long uphill stride, but that doesn't work for similar trackways on flat ground (Krantz, Chapter 3; Daegling Chapter 6).
One trackway found near Bossburg, WA consisted of over 1000 steps over varied terrain. The right foot of this trackway showed a pathology that would be known in humans as "skewfoot." The toeprints of this right foot were misaligned and pointed at varied angles. Most of the middle toe's impression was missing because the toe was either absent or positioned upward. The entire foot had an outward facing curve apparently due to mis-positioned bones. The instep lengths of both feet were approximately the same, but the outer curve of the right foot was longer due to apparent separation of bones. Anatomists and anthropologists have found the footprints convincing (Krantz, Chapter 3; Meldrum, Chapter 13).
When tabulated in a histogram, individual foot lengths show an approximately normal distribution. Foot width scales with foot length but not 1:1, with longer feet being proportionally narrower (Meldrum, Chapter 12).

Hand prints

Hand prints are much rarer, but have been found from multiple individuals. Like the feet, the hands display less varied finger sizes than in humans, and are approximately 1.5 times the length and 2 times the width of human hands. The hand appears to lack a muscular bulge proximal of the thumb, indicating less functional opposability than a human's (Krantz Chapter 2).

Other Signs

There are sightings of twisted branches that look like they were broken by hands stronger than a human's. There are structures made from fallen or purposefully downed trees. There's scat. These would be enough to identify a known creature, but by themselves are not enough to prove the existence of an unknown one. Hair has been found but usually cannot be identified conclusively by morphology. The point of mentioning these signs is not to use them to make a positive claim, but to rebut claims that such evidence is missing.

DNA

A DNA study of ~30+ samples of purported sasquatch and yeti hair came back as showing known animals only (Sykes). The sample labels were blinded, yet a sample from Sumatra came back as tapir, indicating solid methodology and plausible results. Some of these samples were collected in the area of a sighting or suspected activity, others from old preserved material (e.g. a skin said to be a yeti).
One of the hair samples was attributed to a sighting by multiple people, of multiple sasquatches. It was taken from a branch that was twisted and broken in a characteristic manner attributed to sasquatches. Mitochondrial DNA (mDNA) from a well conserved region (12S) matched 'human' that could be any species of the genus Homo, while mDNA from a less stable region (HVS1) did not match any human database. A wider search eventually found a match to a single person in an obscure mDNA database from Uzbekistan (Sykes, Postscript).
Another DNA study was done by a veterinarian (Ketchum) and was of dubious quality. It concluded that sasquatch is a human hybrid with an unknown hominid and has modern human mitochondrial DNA. The results don't make much biological sense, and is likely a result of contamination with modern human DNA (which would be everywhere, obviously)(Sykes, Chapter 14).
I don't know what to make of the DNA results. I don't believe it strengthens the case, but I am including it for completeness.

2) Video Evidence

I am aware of xkcd 1235 (Settled). Paraphrased: All adults now carry cameras with them wherever they go. If sasquatches (and other paranormal phenomena) existed, there would be good video of them by now.
There are videos of purported sasquatches, though, and more are uploaded every year, but there are also hoaxes. Even a relatively good video can be dismissed as a hoax. Unfortunately, most videos are from far away, blurry, or both.

Patterson-Gimlin Film (PGF)

The 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film (PGF) is considered by most (including me) to be the best available video evidence. It was shot by Roger Patterson, a man who had been obsessed with sasquatches for nearly a decade, who had written a book about sasquatches, and who had spent considerable time and expense trying to capture one on video. Some might argue that this obsession is a sign of a potential hoaxer, while others might argue that his significant amount of determination and effort was needed to get the best current film, which ultimately still wasn't convincing to the world.
The film depicts a hairy bipedal figure striding away from the camera. At one point the figure turns to look back. Its face and breasts are visible at this time. The figure then continues to walk away. Based on the apparent breasts, the figure is assumed to be female, and is often called "Patty" after Patterson.
The clearest part of the PGF, stabilized
The stabilized section, close up, with some frames from higher quality still copies. At 00:24 you can see the leg muscles shake in a natural manner when the foot impacts the ground.
A short clip showing good movement of shoulder, back, glute muscles and scapula. I don't know why it's mirror imaged.
After filming:
The first generation copy of the PGF is missing, and most people have seen only second generation copies. Due to the distance, Patty is only a small part of the visual field, standing about 1 mm tall on the physical film (Munn). Still, in the versions I've seen, Patty appears to show a natural stride and movement, and has visible muscular and skeletal movement beneath the hair (deltoid, triceps, IT band, gluteus, scapulae). There's one step where the hard impact results in the thigh muscles quivering. Having no other basis for comparison, my mind intuitively yells, "That's a guy in a fur suit!" I suspect others dismiss the film based on this kind of assessment.
There was some initial disagreement of the film speed used, but 18 fps is the only one that makes sense. At a higher 24 fps, Patty would have to be less than 4 feet tall to move her limbs naturally, and at 16 fps, Patty would have to be 8 or 9 feet tall (Krantz, Chapter 4).
Considering the swing of the limbs as a pendulum (and assuming 18fps), the natural frequency would yield limb lengths consistent with a standing height of about 6'5" and a walking height of 6'0". Using the foot length of 14.5" (which was cast in plaster by parties other than the filmmakers) the height again comes to approximately 6'5" standing and 6'0" striding. The taller standing height is due to the continuously bent leg and hunched posture. The agreement between these methods helps confirm the film speed.
Given the subject's height and one known distance from the camera, the distance and longitudinal speed were measured during the last part of the film during which the cameraman was standing still. Using parallax to a distant background, the lateral motion of the subject was also estimated. The combination of the two gives the heading relative to the line between the camera and subject. This allows more accurate measurement of various horizontally based body dimensions like shoulder width, chest depth, leg size, etc. despite the oblique angle (Krantz, Chapter 4).
These measurements show an armpit-to-armpit span of about 20" (26% of standing height) and a shoulder span of 28" (36% of standing height). Typical human male shoulder span is 16"-18", and extreme male shoulder span is 22". A typical ratio in human males for shoulder span to height is 25% (Krantz, Chapter 4 The Patterson Film). Very large humans Hafthor Bjornsson (6'9" 421 lbs) and Andre the Giant (7'1", 443 lbs) both have shoulder spans of 24".
Patty's other body measurements are similarly extreme. Leg and arm dimensions are huge, and the limbs appear lean and muscular (not padded or flabby). The thigh diameters are 9" laterally by 14" front to back. My own lean thighs are about 6" laterally and 8" front to back and have a circumference of 23". If my thighs were assumed elliptical in shape, the estimated circumference from the diameters would be 22", not too far off from (and lower than) the actual measurement. Taking Patty's 9"x14" thighs to have an elliptical cross section would give an approximate circumference of 36.5". One of the largest lean thigh circumferences (sprint cyclist Robert Forstemann's) are measured to be about 29".
Measured laterally and front to back, Patty's upper bicep diameters are 6.5" x 8" (unflexed, straight armed), giving an estimated (by ellipse) circumference of 23". Arnold Schwarzenegger's were measured to be 19" pumped, though he claimed a max of 22".
Assuming a real creature with no padding, Patty's weight based on these body dimensions has been estimated to be 500lb (Krantz, Chapter 4).
Could padding account for the enlarged proportions? As discussed above, muscular and skeletal movements are apparent under the hair (Daegling, Chapter 5). The IT band and quads are seen to shake in a natural manner with a hard step. The enormous gluteals move independently and in a realistic manner (this is not apparent to some observers, though I do notice it in a few parts of the film). The deltoid is visibly separate from the triceps. The wide shoulders attach to arms that hang downward normally.
Costumes with moving false muscles didn't exist in 1967 and I don't know if they do now. Even the skeptical author conceded that muscle movement was readily apparent, and some kind of skin-tight hair suit would be necessary to pull off a hoax (Daegling, Chapter 5). Aside from the fact that such suits were not available, it doesn't address the massive limb and torso measurements.
Even in stills of the film, the lean muscular shapes of the legs and arms are apparent. In later frames when Patty is facing away, you can see the groove of the spine and raised back muscles on both sides. It looks like a gorilla's back. Stills of the film look difficult to fake with a costume, let alone video. You don't see shapely anatomy like this on Chewbacca, the Ewoks, or the apemen in Planet of the Apes, but you do on the PGF subject (Munns).
Movie costumes at the time would use tricks to hide seams: Ewoks wore scarves to hide the necks. Chewbacca had very long hair, especially at the neck and wrists. The robot Gort from "The Day the Earth Stood Still" had two separate suits for the front and back views in order to hide the seams. The PGF subject is seen from front and back, striding over varied terrain. The wrists flex, and the limbs swing widely. The surface changes are consistent with muscle movements underneath, and are inconsistent with the movements of folding cloth (Munns).
One of the strongest points in favor of the PGF is that it was made and popularized in 1967 on physical film, by two cowboys with no background in special effects or costuming at a time when video manipulation techniques were rudimentary.

3) Sighting Reports

Witness accounts number in the thousands and are consistent from person to person. They occur throughout the year and in all parts of the USA and Canada that have 20" or more of rain per year. Many witnesses are reluctant to name themselves, and report their sightings anonymously. Many are experienced outdoors people such as hunters and backpackers. Though humans are diurnal, and have low sight distance at night, about 50% of sightings occur at night. Based on this, sasquatches are assumed to be nocturnal. A skeptical view might be that it's easier to confuse a witness at night. Native American accounts are widespread and similar (Meldrum, Introduction).
Some fraction of sighting reports include mention of a characteristic unpleasant smell said to resemble skunk and garbage. In Florida the sasquatch is called "skunk ape" but the smell has been reported in all regions that sightings have.
I'm speculating here, but adult male gorillas are known to exude a strong unpleasant odor from their apocrine glands when excited. Perhaps the reported smell is tied to emotional state and occurs only from mature males.
The accounts I've read have verisimilitude: They're generally not flashy or theatrical, and don't have a narrative. They're what I'd expect of accounts of seeing a wild animal.
Sasquatch sighting reports are most often of males, but females and juveniles are also reported. Some females are reported (and filmed, see below) carrying juveniles. The PGF subject is presumed to be a female, as breasts are readily visible.

4) Objections

If they exist, sasquatches are nocturnal, intelligent, shy of humans, and capable of moving more quickly than humans (according to sightings). Additionally, they are rare and have a long life span. Is it impossible that one species of mammal could have all of these qualities? It does seem convenient. I suppose if there were any other animals with all these qualities, they might be cryptids too (haha).
What are the chances that one species would have all these characteristics? Bears and cougars have some, though bears are diurnal, cougars are crepuscular, and neither are as intelligent or as rare as sasquatches are purported to be.
Orangutans and gorillas were known from local reports for a long time before finally being 'discovered' by science. These species are not especially mobile, and are diurnal.

- Why is there so little video and of such low quality?

Encounters last less than a minute, occur in forested areas with obscuring vegetation, and are usually from far away. I don't claim that all the convincing videos are real. I don't claim that these are good enough alone to prove the existence of bigfoot, but they do demonstrate the kind of video evidence that is collected. The point is that there is not a complete absence of video as might be expected if sasquatches didn't exist.
Here's one purportedly of a sasquatch in Mississippi swampland attacking a stump for termites. The subject is not very close. When the subject stands, the cameraman apparently reacts in fear and stops filming.
and:
Here's one of unknown source and location of an apelike animal running behind some rocks, peeking out, apparently picking up a juvenile, and then running away. The juvenile appears to move independently.

- Why has no body been found?

A population of 5000 animals with an average lifespan of 50 years would have ~100 deaths a year. So there would be 100 dead animals per year spread throughout forested areas of North America, most in regions far from human activity. These few would be disposed of by scavengers and be lost within months. Finding a body that died of non-human causes is therefore unlikely (Krantz, Chapter 6).

- Why hasn't one been hit by a vehicle?

About 2 out of 100,000 people are killed by road vehicles in the United States every year. These deaths occur in higher traffic areas. If bigfoot is an intelligent hominid, and it's nocturnal, and it lives in areas with low vehicle traffic, then it's reasonable that one hasn't been hit. That said, while scanning sighting reports, I did run across a report of at least one near-miss, and others sighted by passengers in cars.

- Why hasn't one been shot?

Maybe one will be someday.
Some difficulties I can think of:

- Wouldn't we notice their impact on the ecosystem?

They occupy the same ecological niche as bears, but are much rarer. Their impact would be a few % more berries eaten, and deer killed or scavenged.

- Why are there no fossils?

Fossils are extremely rare. There are examples of extant mammals missing from the fossil record.
However, there are four fossil ape jawbones from Asia that are the biggest of any known primate (Gigantopithecus blacki). There are also numerous matching teeth. There's no way to confirm that this fossil ape was bipedal (Krantz believes it was), but its size and weight would be consistent with sasquatch reports. It shows at least that such large apes have existed (Krantz, Chapter 7).

- Wasn't the PGF debunked, and wasn't Pattersion a conman?

Someone came forward decades after the fact to claim he was the man in the fur suit. He passed a polygraph test. Patterson claimed it was all real and he also passed a polygraph test. Other guys have claimed to be the man in the fur suit.
Patterson was known for his unpaid debts and also cut his friend Gimlin out of his share of any profits from the film. If he could have made a convincing hoax, maybe he would have. I believe he could not have though, and the film stands on its own.
There are a lot of claims about the PGF, but the strength of the PGF is apparent from examining it alone. The proportions combined with visible muscle movements couldn't have been faked with the available costume and special effects technology.
A hoax is implausible because of the following:

Conclusion

The evidence is convincing to me. The plausibility of a large nocturnal non-human hominid living in temperate forests doesn't seem that low, though the creature's continued elusiveness does seem unlikely.
The evidence is as follows:
I think sasquatch will continue to be elusive. More videos will come out every year (as they have) and these will continue to be dismissed.
I hope sasquatch will be recognized as a real species someday. Maybe it will happen after strong evidence is acquired with the use of new technology.
My guess is that sasquatches are our closest living relatives. They became nocturnal due to competition with humans specifically, and that is also why they are so shy of us. Krantz doesn't believe them to be substantially more intelligent than chimps, and I suppose none of the accounts of behavior I've read contradict this. On the other hand, that one mDNA reading implied they're of genus Homo.

2021.03.24 04:56 leerylizard A reasoned case for bigfoot

Introduction

From my review of the available information, I believe sasquatch (aka bigfoot) is a real biological creature. By 'sasquatch' I mean: A hairy bipedal great ape, most typically 6 to 8 feet tall, said to inhabit North American forests.
I am aware that this is not the orthodox scientific view, that it is considered pseudoscience, that there have been hoaxes, and that advocates for the existence of sasquatch sometimes associate with much crazier beliefs (UFOs, ESP, etc.).
"this is how X could be a hoax", and never "this is why X is obviously a hoax"). I cite source chapters only, as I read these as ebooks and page numbers are inconsistent.
Why post this? I want to be on record if sasquatch is ever recognized by science. Also, I would love to hear any refutations of what I consider to be the good evidence that convinced me.
First I'll outline the case for the existence of sasquatch as a real biological species, and then address the most important objections.

1) Physical Evidence

Footprints

There have been hoaxed footprints, but there have also been others that are harder to dismiss, as described below. Bear footprints have claws, are not as long as footprints attributed to sasquatches, and bears cannot replicate the stride length when walking on hind legs. Human footprints are outside the dimensions of purported sasquatch prints (Krantz, Chapter 3, Meldrum, Introduction).
There are hundreds of reported trackways displaying a foot similar to a human foot but approximately 1.5x longer and 2x wider. The toes are more uniform in size than a human's, and the heel is proportionally wider.
The footprints considered genuine show varied toe positions between steps, sometimes show gouges caused by toes digging into the ground on slippery uphills, and sometimes show partial imprints of just the front half of the foot.
The right foot of this trackway showed a gross pathology that would be known in humans as "skewfoot." The toeprints of this right foot were misaligned and pointed at varied angles.

Like the feet, the hands display less varied finger sizes than in humans, and are approximately 1.5 times the length and 2 times the width.

The point of mentioning these signs is not to use them to make a positive claim, but to refute claims that such evidence is missing.

Mitochondrial DNA (mDNA) from a well conserved region matched 'human' that could be any species of the genus Homo, while mDNA from a less stable region of mDNA did not match any human database.

There are videos of purported sasquatches, and more are uploaded every year, but there are also hoaxes.

The figure is assumed to be female, and is often called "Patty" after Patterson.
There's one step where the hard impact results in the thigh muscle quivering. Having no other basis for comparison, my mind's System 1 immediately yells, "That's a guy in a fur suit!" I suspect others dismiss the film based on this kind of System 1 assessment.
The height of Patty has been calculated by different means. Considering the swing of the limbs as a pendulum, the natural frequency would yield limb lengths consistent with a standing height of about 6'5" and a walking height of 6'0". Using the foot length of 14.5" (which was cast in plaster by parties other than the filmmakers) the height again comes to approximately 6'0" striding height and 6'5" standing. The taller standing height is due to the continuously bent leg and hunched posture. There was some initial disagreement of the film speed used, but 18 fps is the only one that makes sense. At a higher 24 fps, Patty would have to be less than 4 feet tall to move her limbs naturally, and at 16 fps, Patty would have to be 8 or 9 feet tall (Krantz, Chapter 4 The Patterson Film).
Given the height and one known distance, the distance and longitudinal speed were measured during the last part of the film during which the cameraman was standing still. Using parallax to a distant background, the lateral motion of the subject was also estimated. The combination of the two gives the heading relative to the line between the camera and subject. This allows more accurate measurement of various horizontally based body dimensions like shoulder width, chest depth, leg size, etc. despite the oblique angle (Krantz, Chapter 4 The Patterson Film).
My own thighs are about 6" laterally and 8" front to back and have a circumference of 23".
Arnold's were measured to be 19" pumped, though he claimed 22".
Assuming a real creature with no padding, Patty's weight based on these body dimensions has been estimated to be 500lb (Krantz, Chapter 4).
Could padding account for the enlarged proportions? As stated above, muscular and skeletal movements are apparent under the hair (Daegling, Chapter 5).
Aside from the fact that such suits were not available, it doesn't address the massive limb and shoulder measurements.
The wrists flex, and the arms swing widely.

There are a lot of claims about the PGF. The strength of the PGF is apparent from examining it alone. The proportions combined with visible muscle movements couldn't have been faked with the available costume and special effects technology.

Conclusion

The evidence is convincing to me. The prior probability for the existence of a large nocturnal non-human hominid living in temperate forest doesn't seem all that low, though the creature's continued elusiveness does seem somewhat unlikely.
The evidence is as follows:

2021.02.28 19:55 havgufa Iffy shoulder due to handstands

Been having a sensation in the upper part of my scapula towards my higher trapezius on the right side. Started just before Christmas
Went to a physio in january and she said that my traps were weak and labeled this as an office worker injury. I said its probably due to handstands and press to HS, but she gave no notice to that. She told me to do shrugs and reverse flies.
I took some time of HS and press to HS since Jan. And slowly brought them back last few weeks but now feel this sensation again.
Anybody experienced something similar?

One area of improvement for me is the drill-specific warmup. I have a tendency to apply too much force too soon. For the first warmup set, I'm now comfortable with exerting just enough force to take all the slack out of the chain. For the following warmup sets though, I'm applying more than the recommended force. I just need to get used to ramping up the intensity more gradually.
Several years ago I injured my shoulder in an accident with a kettlebell. The shoulder has been unstable ever since, and can feel unusually sore the day after exercise. It usually happens after I work up to a certain level of load. For example, earlier this year, as part of my quests for the handstand pushup and planche, I tried an exercise called the "pike pull through" and the following day the shoulder was more sore than usual and I couldn't do any more pressing exercise for the next several weeks. I was able to recover with the help of YTWL exercises and doing external shoulder rotation with fitness bands. Then I was able to resume pressing exercises for a couple of months, until I progressed to heavier load, and once again the shoulder flared up. This time it hurt to reach for the tuning pegs of my guitar.
After 3 sessions with the Isochain, there is a noticeable improvement in how my shoulder feels. The book mentions research indicating that isometrics has been found to reduce or eliminate joint pain. The improvement of how my shoulder feels seems to bear this out. I did have to pay extra attention to keeping my scapulae protracted, to protect the shoulder, engage the lats and enhance performance in the shoulder press. The next test will come when I progress closer to my bodyweight load in the Shoulder Press. The book says that because there is no movement in isometrics, the shoulder will be fine. I'll find out!
I really like the Isochain's electronics which signal to me when my force production has reached the target load, and then counts off to me the seconds that I sustain the force. I even like being informed that my force production has slipped below the target load.
I also like being able to practice the deadlift again. I missed that whole-body tension that I got only from standing up with a heavily loaded barbell. I don't however miss the risk of injury that comes with working with a heavy barbell. I also look forward to trying the front squat, Zercher lift, and other barbell-inspired drills.
One early struggle was figuring out the appropriate chain lengths for each exercise. What took a particularly long amount of time was finding a pain-free position for the shoulder press. I ended up ordering a bag of nylon cable tags, found by searching "cable label". They're basically plastic tags with zip ties. Anyway, I'm using those to speed up the process of adjusting the chain for various drills.
My tentative plan is to do the Promethean for the prescribed 6-8 weeks, then switch to Promethean Mark II for the following 6-8 weeks. Then after that I will do an assessment of where I'm at in the handstand pushup progression. I practice GMB Elements on the days I have off from Isochain training, so I get a little bit of preparatory work for hand balancing from that. I'm also practicing easier variations of the shrimp squat to maintain the balance and coordination for that movement.

2020.05.29 21:37 Psyeth Work comp and workplace screwing me over

Hey Reddit, I need to know my options here. On 5/5 this year I injured my right arm at work through very intensive shoveling. I reported it, got an immediate drs visit through work comp and was given 800mg of ibuprofen 3x/day and 650mg of Tylenol 2x/day along side a muscle relaxer for night use. Even with medication my scapula muscles have been inflamed as well as my side rib area leading to my scapula with very minimal change in the pain. The dr deemed me still able to work because “i still have 2 legs and a good left arm”. I could NOT move it above my shoulder on my own without pain and was told that I’d be limited to no lifting above 5 pounds and limited/no pushing or pulling with 4 hours maximum shifts, so my 8hr work days were now cut in half. The drs visit took place on a Wednesday so I had 2 more days of work, I honestly couldn’t do anything at my job other than throwing some labels onto these bags meant to hold 50lbs (they were empty but to give context). Doing even that required me to bend forward and still use my right arm (as expected by the dr because he mentioned he needed me to still use it in fear of losing movement in my arm entirely). So at this point I was expected to still work with an injured arm, not use it but to use it. I know confusing. I didn’t think it was a good idea as I was in pain while I was at work, always holding my arm over to rub my shoulder blade or under my armpit to give me some comfort from my arm and the swelling. Thus I took 2 days off then it was the weekend, took Monday off and saw the dr Tuesday morning again for a follow up. I had SOME improvement, being able to move my arm up again and around. The inflammation was still there though. I was honest with the dr as well, mentioning that I’ve been doing stretches with it lightly and other than that not using it. This is where my first issue arose (up to this point I’ve been patient and trusting that I’ll get better) the dr raised his voice at me in a mean and upset manner as if I violated something terrible and asked me why I didn’t go to work and I explained to him I couldn’t do anything and that I was still in pain at work and having to use my arm, and I repeated his words “you told me it was up to my employer now if they wanted to give me time off” which they originally didnt, I took those days off on my own and later worked it out with my workplace that they’d cover those 3 days for me since they were unsure with the dr yet. Well after that visit I felt like complete crap, to the point where I feel like I’ve made up my arm issue and that maybe I’m just over thinking it and I should mention that I’m not a confrontational person so I didn’t say anything as I was taken a back. Anyways he sent me back to work with the same diagnosis and 4 hr shifts. He also mentioned he’d sign me up for physical therapy for my arm. I’ve now been sent back, and told my workplace the was I was treated at the drs and that I felt he thought I was lying. My workplace basically stayed silent and I told them I’d like to take the week off since they’d mentioned it was up to them now and not the drs. I was in luck since due to covid, the company gave us 1 week free that Monday I wasn’t there. So I took that week off and still hadn’t heard anything for therapy. I was still in pain through that week and still had the inflammation but I regained more movement in my arm. Oh quick note as I forgot to mention, the inflammation makes it feel as if my shoulder blade is sticking out all day which hurts and sitting is comfortable. I went back to and have taken it slowly, but working again. I was limited to only labeling which I was okay with since I saw I was getting a little better. And I was doing fine, until I tried grabbing a pile of bags to label, and from what I think happened I pulled on a set that was stuck in between another set and I felt the muscles right in front of my shoulder’s rotator cuff grow in pain instantly. My arm dangled a little bit I thought it was just cuz I hurt myself, and that it’d pass just like I was getting better before. So I didn’t mention it to my workplace at first, instead I went to go sit down for 30minutes while I teared up a bit (gotta be honest)from the pain in an empty office. Eventually I was able to calm down and took it super slow through my last hour of work. At this point I couldn’t move my arm anymore and the pain was there the whole time and it was only getting more intense as the clock ticked. After I finished my shift I went home where I decided to call the dr and push my appoint on 6/2 to ASAP. They saw me yesterday morning and sent me with the same rules, no pushing or pulling no lift above 5lbs, go back to work 4 hr shifts. I can’t move my right arm up even a 1/4th way up anymore without pain going from arm to my shoulder and the shoulder blade. And to top it off, i had gotten into a panicked shouting match with the dr because he was getting mad with me again for not getting better and he "just doesn't get it" i got extremely mad and upset. I felt like i was at fault for getting worse. i spoke to a nurse that came in while he went to go do something else after that shouting match, hoping that shed not say anything and if i could just get another dr. This nurse has been a god send to me, as she has been the only one actually kind to me through the process so far. she did end up talking to the dr, who ended up apologizing to me and saying hes more frustrated with himself because he cant figure out whats going on with me. he's ordered an mri and physical therapy but has to be approved by an adjuster through work comp. Now after speaking to my workplace again about what happened they stayed silent on that matter and agreed to speak to me today about whether or not id get time off paid. and ofc, they'd rather me still go in for 4 hours and i quote, "try to fill in the 4 hours you're scheduled with something we maybe will have, if not then we will have to see what happens." i left it at that and ive come home since my shift to contact my already unresponsive adjuster who in their voicemail claims would be back to work on march 15th. forwarding number to another adjuster led to nothing as well, and calling the drs office got me a number to a supervisor of adjusters voicemail. ive left all my info etc. and im waiting. I should add that this company is a small local company where i live. they really are great people, my dads the production manager and has worked with them for over a decade. thats how i got this job, but im now at a point where im being told by the dr that my employer has power over paying me without work and my employer is going by the dr's orders of going to work. i cant do anything. im in pain all day. i cried in my bed from pain 10 minutes ago before finishing this up. i have an arm thats needing constant arm support, attention, and medication that isnt really helping. ive spoken to my dad that im going to quit in a week or 2 if im not getting any better with my arm and they refuse to give me paid time off for an injury caused TWICE in the workplace. my family has seen me crying from the pain and the injury. i feel like im going crazy that im just screwed here. i know i sound desperate, but im so frustrated!! please and thank you to anyone who reads and can give some information on options.
TLDR; got injured twice at work, work comp sends me back to work with reduced hours each time after enged in a yelling match with dr and job isnt giving me paid time off, even though i cant move my arm and in pain all day with medication. adjuster isnt availble and an MRI i need won't get proccesed now. im afraid im going to have long term damage and no way of having income if i have to quit this job due to work/dr negligence.

2019.04.23 21:41 mysoju1 Front lever pull to inverted hang: hit or miss?

I've recently came across the realization that front lever pulls to inverted hang (on rings), can be either hit or miss.
They've been labeled often recently as the bread and butter exercise for developing and improving the front lever, but here are some points that got me thinking as to why they can be done improperly:
1) If the progression is too hard for you to pull up SLOWLY and with control, with straight arms... you'll most likely have to pull in an explosive manner, making it a fast concentric. The speed and explosiveness of the pull allows you to break through the last 20 degrees of the top portion with less effort. So, you could do a full or half lay FL pull, but pulling at the bottom part very fast/powerful (as it's the easiest part), to break the top ROM. (that's how I do my half lay FL pulls) In other words not much time under tension throughout the whole movement.
2) A lot of people also neglect the negative part of the pull, they either drop way too fast, or don't set their scapula positioning at the top properly before initiating the descent. However, the slower you go down in your negative, the faster your rep count will drop in your set as well :D
3) When I try depressing my scapula before initiating the ascent, it was way too hard for me to pull my half lay to the top. I had to start with my scapula elevated for me to pass. But in a FL, one wants to scapula depressed all the way. Weird? This got me thinking if I was doing it the wrong way this whole time.
One exercise that could fix this is a slow FL raise to inverted hang, lower to horizontal, then pull back up, rinse and repeat. You're pretty much under tension the whole time, except at the top, but the only gripe is that your progression will be a lot lower. I can FL pull to inverted half lay (explosively), but only advanced tuck if I go inverted hang, lower to horizontal, pull back up. (controlled way)
Thoughts on this? I know BosBatMan experimented a lot on this and could chime in :)
Maybe I'm just thinking too much.

2018.11.09 00:27 verba-non-acta The Injury Curse: Player Durability and Expected Games

2019 Pre-Draft List Analysis
The Injury Curse: Player Durability and Expected Games
Heading into the draft, I thought it might be useful to take a look at the list, with a specific focus on games missed through injury/poor form.
We all know that injuries have plagued us terribly over the past few years, but to what degree have our key players really missed out, and how does that affect what we can expect from them next year?
To give us a somewhat scientific starting point, I’ve created a ‘Player Consistency Rating’ (PCR), which is essentially the number of games played since debut, divided by number of games they could have played. Never missed a game since debut like Ed Richards, Fergus Greene or Brad Lynch? Your PCR is 100%. Debut in late 2015 then sit out two seasons like Roarke Smith? Your PCR will be a list-low 18%.
The rating, obviously, isn’t perfect. It unfairly rewards new players that settle in quickly (like Richards, Greene, Lynch and Gowers) while penalising mid-career players that took a couple of seasons to get going or had long lay-offs (Jong 45%, Dale 49%). It also treats every season as 22 games rather than including finals, which gives a small bump to the 2016 heroes, but I think that a longer season should count towards a higher rating. With some sense checking, it gives us a decent jumping off point from which to analyse the current list.
The Stalwarts These are the players you would expect, based on their history, to be available for selection every week, with only the occasional niggle forcing a short rest. They’ve earned that reputation based on playing at least 90% of available games since debut.
Marcus Bontempelli (104 games): PCR 98% Topping the list, with a PCR of 98% and 104 games in less than five full seasons, is everyone’s first name on the team sheet Marcus Bontempelli. Hip and appendix concerns notwithstanding, we can be extremely grateful that our highest profile player and game breaker has, until now, also been our most durable.
PCR Indication: 22 games Realistic Expectation: 22 games
Caleb Daniel (74 games): PCR 99% By contrast and perhaps surprisingly, the second standout PCR is our ‘lowest profile’ player, Caleb Daniel. Whilst it seems like Caleb has played a few games in the VFL and would therefore have a lower rating, his participation in all five finals played since his mid-2015 debut gives him the highest PCR of any player with more than 50 games. Seemingly finding his tactical niche in defence towards the end of 2018, we may be able to expect even more consistent appearances from the little man.
Expected Availability : 22 games Realistic Expectation: 22 games
Jack Macrae (118 games): PCR 91% Arguably rivalling Bont for first name on the team sheet, Jack Macrae’s durability – or slight lack thereof – has prevented him from putting together the truly impressive season of which we are beginning to feel he is capable. Nonetheless, his PCR of 91% is more reflective of his debut season than any extended gaps since, with the three games missed in each of the 2016 and 2018 seasons being his only significant outages. As he matures, Jack’s focus should be on building this durability to push towards a full 22 game season and a possible Brownlow.
PCR Indication: 20 games Realistic Expectation: 20 games
Lachie Hunter (105 games): PCR 88% Our newly minted Sutton Medallist has missed only one game in the past three seasons, and that was due to an undisciplined shove on Tom Papley rather than any lack of fitness. After a number of extended layoffs in his second and third seasons, Hunter has emerged as a genuinely durable – and valuable – player that we can expect to be consistently available on his wing, provided he can resist the urge to reintroduce Papley’s head to the turf in future.
PCR Indication: 20 games Realistic Expectation: 20 games
Jason Johannisen (106 games): PCR 78% One of only two players to manage all 22 games in 2018, JJ’s PCR is perhaps artificially low due to his injury plagued first two full seasons. Since he averaged just 12 games in 2013-14, he has managed an average of nearly 20, famously missing a chunk of games early in 2016 due to a torn hamstring – an ongoing risk for such an explosive runner. In spite of this, he has missed only two games since and seems to be developing into a 20+ game per season player.
PCR Indication: 18 games Realistic Expectation: 20 games
Toby McLean (60 games): PCR 76% The other player to notch 22 games in 2018, McLean’s rating also suffers from early career inconsistency. Missing most of his first season and only managing 15 in 2016, McLean has since cemented his place in the side and has only missed three games in the past two seasons. His slight frame combined with his habit of lowering his body into tackles presents an ongoing risk of missing games due to head knocks, but 2018 showed that McLean is capable of playing some big seasons going forward.
PCR Indication: 17 games Realistic Expectation: 20 games
Jackson Trengove (169 games): PCR 85% An early-season scapula injury sustained against West Coast – in an incident that I was convinced should have led to at least a free kick – marred Trengove’s debut season for the Dogs, keeping him out for six games and hampering his ability to settle into the side. Since his round 10 return, however, he has demonstrated the kind of durability that Port fans took for granted, with the versatile big man averaging just over 19 games a season for them. With any luck, he should continue that record next season for the Dogs as we look to him to help cover for the absence of Jordan Roughead in the ruck.
PCR Indication: 19 games Realistic Expectation: 19 games
Liam Picken (198 games): PCR 90% Aren’t we all looking forward to seeing this man back in the team? Prior to missing the entirety of 2018 due to concussion-related concerns, since his 2009 round 2 debut Picken had managed 20 or more games in every season. With his more recent emergence as a genuine goal-kicking option, if his reported return to fitness is accurate, this will be a massive inclusion for the side.
PCR Indication: 20 games Realistic Expectation: 17 games (with some conservative management following a season on the sidelines)
Taylor Duryea (118 games): PCR 91% The first of our new recruits to appear on this list has an almost identical record to that of Jack Macrae, both playing 118 games in six seasons, despite being three years his senior. Duryea finally made his debut for Hawthorn in round 3 of 2013 at just shy of 22 years of age, following a horrible run of injuries that prevented him getting a chance in the first team. Macrae would debut at age 18 just one week later. Since that time, Duryea has played as consistently for Hawthorn as Macrae has for us, only recently falling slightly out of favour to record 15 and 17 games in 2017 and 2018. While many don’t see Duryea as a best-22 player at the Dogs, his consistent availability and experience may give him the opportunity to cement a place at half back if others fail to maintain fitness.
PCR Indication: 20 games Realistic Expectation: 15 games
The Second Tier This group’s history indicates that we should plan for less than a full season, with some injuries here and there providing opportunities for others to fill in.
Mitch Wallis (123 games): PCR 72% Early in his career, Wallis spent a lot of time in and out of the side, nonetheless averaging a respectable 17 games in his first four full seasons. From round 12, 2015 to round 18, 2016, he played every available game, tragically breaking this impressive run with a horror broken leg that kept him out of the finals and on the sidelines until round 9 of the following year. Following this long layoff, Wallis struggled to regain his place in the side, spending time in the VFL as he appeared out of favour with the coach. A new contract and impressive finish to 2018 could hopefully signal a return to consistency for Mitch, who has become an important midfield and forward option.
PCR Indication: 16 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
Zaine Cordy (48 games): PCR 72% For his first two seasons it was difficult to see where Cordy fit into the team, being employed towards the end of 2016 as a defensive forward option. Since then, he has matured into a genuine key defender, playing 37 games across 2017-18. His courage means he is prone to injury – including the horror skull fracture sustained against North Melbourne in round 21 – so we should plan for Cordy to miss the occasional game in 2019.
PCR Indication: 16 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
Josh Dunkley (43 games): PCR 65% It’s difficult to say whether Dunkley belongs here or in the Newbie group. Just three seasons in, Dunkley’s ankle and shoulder injuries in 2017 limited him to just seven games, hurting his PCR. 2018 culminated in an impressive finish to the season, notching 10 straight games after returning from three in the VFL with confidence he had appeared to lose in the round 4 loss to Sydney. He averaged more than 27 disposals across those 10, promising much if he can maintain fitness in 2019. With luck, his time spent at a fitness camp with Bontempelli at the Nike HQ over the off season will help.
PCR Indication: 15 games Realistic Expectation: 20 games
Josh Schache (40 games): PCR 61% Believe it or not, 2018 was Josh Schache’s best year in AFL football. Despite only playing 13 games due to a combination of early ankle injury and the requirement to prove himself in the VFL before slotting into the side, Schache notched 159 disposals and kicked 17 goals – his best single season return in both categories. Despite his disproportionate and fragile appearance, Schache didn’t miss a game once given his chance, and we should expect him to continue to improve in 2019.
PCR Indication: 14 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
Dale Morris (252 games): PCR 83% Despite the recent documentary that sought to label our fan-favourite and most experienced player ‘unbreakable’, the reality is that Moz has suffered several breaks over the past few years. Averaging 22 games over his first eight full seasons, he has since managed just 14.75, with the standout of 23 in 2016 among them. His PCR is artificially high due to his early-career durability; managing just 11 games in each of the past two seasons and now sporting a naturally repaired ACL that could tear at any time, only the supreme optimist would expect 19 or more games from Morris next year.
PCR Indication: 19 games Realistic Expectation: 12 games
On the Bubble This is the troubling group – the players that have missed too many games to this point in their careers, whether through injury or because they have dropped out of favour. Arguably, in this cohort lies the difference between a successful season and another one in which we have to rely on too many games from inexperienced players.
Matthew Suckling (152 games): PCR 69% Suckling is an interesting case. Averaging only three games across his first two seasons, Suckers went on to enjoy four incredibly consistent years for Hawthorn, hardly missing a game as the Hawks ran deep into successive finals series, winning two flags. Averaging an incredible 24 games across those years, he quickly became a key member of the 2016 Bulldogs team, until injury saw him sidelined from rounds six to nine, again in rounds 19 and 20, and then cruelly following the semi-final win over his former employers. 2017 saw a return to his durability of old, notching a perfect 22 games in an injury ravaged team, but he backslid again in 2018, managing only half that tally. The way forward for Suckers is unclear; at age 30 and with a flair for overly ambitious options by foot, many see him as a luxury player that may lose his place in the side to someone more consistent – possibly his former teammate Duryea. He will need to return to his durable best to keep his place.
PCR Indication: 16 games Realistic Expectation: 16 games
Easton Wood (137 games): PCR 68% Will we ever see a return to the form and durability Wood demonstrated in his impressive 2015 and 2016 seasons when he averaged 21 games, was named All Australian and captained the Dogs to a Premiership? We can all certainly hope so, but his long term numbers are cause for concern. Over nine full seasons, he has only managed 18 or more games four times, soft tissue injuries accounting for, on average, 10 games per season. Again only managing 12 in 2018, next season will be make or break for Wood’s captaincy. With a new leadership group emerging in Bontempelli, Hunter and Johannisen, Wood will need to demonstrate the capacity to get his body right and lead from the front.
PCR Indication: 15 games Realistic Expectation: 15 games
Tom Liberatore (117 games): PCR 66% At his best, Libba is one of the best inside midfielders in the competition. Sutton Medallist in the difficult 2014 season, he was cruelly ruled out of 2015 by the first of two ACL injuries that would also keep him out in 2018. Other than these two missed seasons, Libba has demonstrated outstanding durability, managing more than 19 games on average across six full seasons. What to expect in 2019, however, is anyone’s guess. If his knee troubles are truly behind him, at 26 years of age he should be able to return to his best. It is, however, worrying that the club has seen fit to only offer him one year on his contract.
PCR Indication: 15 games Realistic Expectation: Anywhere from 0 to 18 games
Hayden Crozier (86 games): PCR 59% Indications from the second half of 2018 are good that Crozier will be able to cement a place in the team and continue the consistency he has demonstrated in latter part of his career. Early on, Crozier spent a lot of time out of the team for Fremantle, averaging under 12 games across his first four full seasons but managing 19 for them in 2017. Following his recovery from a medial ligament strain sustained in round 1 of 2018 against GWS, Crozier went on to miss only one more game, notching 17 and finishing inside the top 10 in the Sutton Medal. Still just 24 years of age, Crozier has perhaps the greatest scope of any player to improve his availability and make an impact on the side.
PCR Indication: 14 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
Tom Boyd (61 games): PCR 58% Number one draft picks suffer from an unfair weight of expectation, as do players with million-dollar contracts early in their careers. Perhaps no-one knows this more than Tom Boyd. Averaging just 13 games per season since his move from GWS, Boyd has suffered setbacks physical, mental and social, including back and finger injuries, ongoing abuse from fans and rumoured bullying from fellow players. Still just 23 years old, Boyd has demonstrated what he can do when he gets a decent run in the team – the 11 consecutive games he played in 2016 represented the longest run he’s managed to date, culminating in the best two performances of his career. If he can finally get rid of the niggles and nay-sayers that have interrupted his first five seasons, Boyd could yet become the dominant player we all want him to be.
PCR Indication: 13 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
Bailey Williams (32 games): PCR 54% Williams showed signs in 2018 that he could be maturing into a genuinely top class player. A dashing defender that looks like he could comfortably run through the midfield or even provide an exciting forward option, the lesser of the Baileys suddenly surpassed his namesake and became the better Bailey, bombing unexpected goals against Essendon, Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Geelong and Richmond. A bit-part player in his first season, niggling injuries kept him on the sidelines for 18 games across the last two seasons, something he will need to address if he is to develop into the player we hope he can be.
PCR Indication: 12 games Realistic Expectation: 15 games
Tory Dickson (96 games): PCR 62% Across 2015-16, Dickson managed 45 games and scored 90 goals in a Premiership winning side. Unfortunately, these – and his debut season in 2012 – are the only seasons in which Dickson has managed anything approaching a good run of games. 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018 has seen him literally hamstrung, recording only 34 games and 44 goals, for an average of 8.5 and 11 – a dismal return for such a talented forward. At 31 years of age and out of contract at the end of 2019, Dickson will need a big year to avoid a disappointing end to a career that promised so much.
PCR Indication: 14 games Realistic Expectation: 10 games
Bailey Dale (40 games): PCR 49% After a promising 2017 where Dale seemed to cement his place in the side at half-forward, 2018 saw a dip in form, followed by a foot injury that limited him to just 10 games. Now competing for a forward place with the newly recruited Lloyd, the returning Picken and the exciting Gowers, Dale will need to get his body right and quickly recapture his 2017 form if he’s to improve on his currently low ratio of games played.
PCR Indication: 11 games Realistic Expectation: 15 games
Lin Jong (61 games): PCR 45% The Dogs have shown faith in the luckless Jong, contracting him for another two seasons. And at just 25 years old, the gamble seems like a good one, however Jong’s inability to play more than 16 games in any season to date has to be of concern. Broken collar bones have seen him miss the 2016 finals series and much of 2018, and a ruptured ACL ruled out a decent chunk of 2017 as well. If Jong can avoid long term injuries like these, he represents a brave, big bodied option that can contribute well at half forward given the opportunity. Questions remain whether his body is durable enough to match his play style.
PCR Indication: 10 games Realistic Expectation: 12 games
Sam Lloyd (57 games): PCR 53% Perhaps it seems unfair to list our second new recruit among the ‘on the bubble’ players, however at 28 years old – 29 at the start of season 2019 – Lloyd’s meagre 57 games should be of some concern. Like Duryea, he was a late starter, debuting at 24 years of age. Since then, Lloyd has managed just one full season of 22 games, averaging less than 9 in his other four. We understand that this was due to Richmond’s embarrassment of midfield and forward riches rather than any injury concerns for Lloyd, however it remains to be seen whether he will be capable of maintaining a run at AFL level.
PCR Indication: 12 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
The Fringe Whether due to injury or poor form, these players seem to have little opportunity to impact the course of events next season. They seem likely to spend next season in the VFL, if on field at all.
Fletcher Roberts (49 games): PCR 36% Unfortunately for Premiership defender Fletcher Roberts, he appears to have fallen out of favour with the coaching staff. Managing just 12 games since the 2016 Grand Final, Fletch has failed to impress and appears destined for delisting at the end of next season. With Zaine Cordy, Aaron Naughton, Dale Morris, Easton Wood, Bailey Williams, Jackson Trengove and arguably Lewis Young all ahead of him in the pecking order, it seems unlikely we’ll see Roberts get much more than his 50th game, if that.
PCR Indication: 8 games Realistic Expectation: 2 games
Roarke Smith (12 games): PCR 18% It’s hard to imagine an unluckier name to have at the Dogs in recent years than Smith. Like his namesake Clay, Roarke has suffered multiple ACL injuries, forcing him to miss two of his four seasons at the club. Finally managing to break into the side in round 10, a car accident kept him out of round 19, followed by a concussion sustained against St Kilda in round 20 that sidelined him for the next two. His determination in the face of awful luck is apparent; questions remain as to whether he’s good enough to overcome it.
PCR Indication: 4 games Realistic Expectation: 8 games
Lukas Webb (24 games): PCR 28% The latest in a string of injuries that has kept Lukas Webb out of the side since his 2015 debut, the fractured neck he sustained in a VFL game may yet end his career. The 22 year old still wears a neck brace, and looks set for a conservative return to training in 2019. Any games he plays for the seniors next year will be regarded as a bonus, if not a miracle.
PCR Indication: 7 games Realistic Expectation: 0 games
The Newbies These players all have too few games under their belts to calculate a meaningful PCR. Despite some having very high ratings, with more experienced players set to return, not all are likely to have the same opportunity next season.
Ed Richards (21 games): PCR 100% As much as Ed the Red excited us at times in 2018, he did demonstrate a tendency to drift in and out of games which might have led to some VFL time if not for our horrendous injury list. Nonetheless, I would expect the potential he displayed to lead to more chances in 2019 as we groom him as a possible solution to the non-Hunter wing vacancy.
PCR Indication: 22 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
Billy Gowers (20 games): PCR 91% The standout from 2018’s group of debutantes from a physique point of view, Gowers’ additional three years in the football system are evident in his size and strength. A pre-season broken wrist may keep him away from full training until after Christmas, but that shouldn’t hamper him too much heading into 2019, as he tries to build on his status as the club’s leading goal scorer.
PCR Indication: 20 games Realistic Expectation: 20 games
Patrick Lipinski (18 games): PCR 82% After some early injury concerns prior to debut, Lipinksi has demonstrated that, when given the opportunity, he can string multiple games together. Picked for the first time since his late 2017 debut in round 5, Lipinksi played every available game following except for round 18, when he was dropped to make way for the impressive return of Crozier. Nonetheless he regained his place the following week, keeping it for the remainder of the season. Whilst this impressive fledgling PCR indicates a high availability, one suspects he will continue to see some VFL time as he develops.
PCR Indication: 18 games Realistic Expectation: 15 games
Aaron Naughton (18 games): PCR 82% Probably the find of 2018, our number nine draft pick from WA put together an impressive season that saw him finish fourth in the Sutton Medal. A nasty looking ankle injury sustained against Brisbane seemed to have cruelled an impressive start to his career, but Naughton bounced back quickly, missing only four games and even kicking two important goals on return up forward in the narrow loss to North Melbourne. His durability is difficult to judge this early in his career, but with another pre-season under his belt we can be hopeful that signs point to an improvement over the last key back we drafted from WA.
PCR Indication: 18 games Realistic Expectation: 18 games
Brad Lynch (9 games): PCR 100% I’m not sure anybody genuinely expected Brad Lynch to play as well as he did on debut against Geelong in that epic round 15 win. An impressive 18 disposal performance was followed by an even more impressive 23 disposal game against Hawthorn, and suddenly Lynch had found his way into the regular team. A dip in form towards the end of the season indicates that there is still some way to go before Lynch can be regarded as a genuine best-22 player, but two goals against Richmond in round 23 may have been enough to convince the coach that Lynch deserves more chances in 2019, even if just as injury cover.
PCR Indication: 22 games Realistic Expectation: 10 games
Fergus Greene (5 games): PCR 100% A late season debutante in the Ballarat drubbing against Port Adelaide, Greene impressed with his ability to mark and goal inside 50. As inexperienced as his name suggests, the gangly forward nonetheless managed a goal in each of the following four games, recording an impressive six marks in the each of the wins against St Kilda and North Melbourne. His four behinds against North suggested that, with a little more composure, he could be capable of kicking some big scores in future. Five games from a possible five gives him an artificially high PCR at this early stage, and we should expect more time in the VFL next season as he continues to develop.
PCR Indication: 22 games Realistic Expectation: 10 games
Tim English (9 games): PCR 26% 2019 looms as a big year for Tim English. Concerns persist that the highly-rated 205cm ruck prospect is still too light to compete against the league’s best, and after a decent first seven games in 2018, a foot injury saw him struggle to work his way back into the team. But with the departure of Roughead and Campbell, and reports that Boyd will move into a key forward role, English looks set to play big minutes in the ruck next year.
PCR Indication: 6 games Realistic Expectation: 15 games
Lewis Young (9 games): PCR 31% An impressive debut in 2017 had us all excited for what seemed like a ready-made key defender. However, by the end of the season, Young’s lack of experience had been ruthlessly exploited by GWS, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, demonstrating the need for more time in the VFL. Returning to the side in 2018 against Gold Coast and Brisbane, Young still looked green, and should benefit from another season of experience in the twos.
PCR Indication: 7 games Realistic Expectation: 5 games
Callum Porter (0 games): N/A Yet to debut, Josh Dunkley mentioned Porter as his training buddy during the three weeks he spent in the VFL this season, indicating the youngster had been similarly challenged and also made progress with his game. Hopefully we’ll see him get a chance to impress next year.
PCR Indication: N/A Realistic Expectation: 2 games
Reaching 484
Ultimately, with 22 players taking the field in 22 games, each club must find a total of 484 games from their list. Here’s what our list looks like in reaching that number:

Player PCR Indication Realistic
Marcus Bontempelli 22 22
Caleb Daniel 22 22
Ed Richards 22 18
Brad Lynch 22 10
Fergus Greene 22 10
Jack Macrae 21 20
Liam Picken 20 17
Taylor Duryea 20 15
Lachie Hunter 20 20
Billy Gowers 20 20
Dale Morris 19 12
Jackson Trengove 19 19
Jason Johannisen 18 20
Patrick Lipinski 18 15
Aaron Naughton 18 18
Toby McLean 17 20
Matthew Suckling 16 16
Mitch Wallis 16 18
Zaine Cordy 16 18
Easton Wood 15 15
Tom Liberatore 15 18
Josh Dunkley 15 20
Tory Dickson 14 10
Hayden Crozier 14 18
Josh Schache 14 18
Tom Boyd 13 18
Sam Lloyd 12 18
Bailey Williams 12 15
Bailey Dale 11 15
Lin Jong 10 12
Fletcher Roberts 8 2
Lukas Webb 7 0
Lewis Young 7 5
Tim English 6 15
Roarke Smith 4 8
Callum Porter 0 0
545 537

In both our PCR Indication and realistic expectation, we have approximately 50 games in hand, which means we should be able to manage 2 or 3 long term injuries. Any more than that, and our list will be under serious strain. What matters in terms of putting together a successful season is from where these games come. The following is a breakdown of games from some key players over the past three seasons:
Player 2016 2017 2018
Dale Morris 23 11 11
Liam Picken 26 22 0
Tory Dickson 22 9 8
Matthew Suckling 17 22 11
Easton Wood 20 18 12
Mitch Wallis 17 12 18
Tom Liberatore 21 18 1
Totals 146 112 61

Add to this the games from past player Matthew Boyd, and the picture becomes even clearer:
Matthew Boyd 24 10 N/A
When these players take the field, we succeed. When their seasons are interrupted, less experienced players like Gowers, Richards, Naughton, Greene, Lynch, and Lipinski are forced to shoulder too much responsibility.
In this light, the recruitment of Taylor Duryea makes more sense. A 27 year old with more than 100 games under his belt, Duryea should bring this kind of maturity and stability to a side that has sorely missed it for the past two years. But he cannot be expected to do it alone; the key will be getting consistent games from Wood, Suckling, Dickson, Wallis, Liberatore and Picken, with more than 15 games from Morris considered an unexpected bonus. If these players can find some consistency, history indicates that we will be a genuine finals chance again in 2019.
If not, we can expect another year of wondering what could have been.

2018.01.08 01:59 thebaltomeal Lillebaby Hip Carry??

I'm hoping all you lovely people can help me before I lose my mind with my carrier!!
My LO is 8 months old, and we've been successfully using our Lillebaby for the past 6 months (in facing starting at 2 months, outward facing starting around 6 months). However, I have a nerve dysfunction that causes my scapula to wing out, so hip carrying is going to be the ideal carrying position for us- she loves to see the world and interact, but still loves to be carried, and mama's arms are tired.
We're leaving to go cross country in a few days, and I was really hoping to master the hip carry before then. I've tried (sans baby) several times, just to see how to put it on/position straps, and I feel like a crazy person every time I've done it. I've looked at several videos, guides, and the manual, and I can't for the life of me figure it out. They name straps and buckles and I don't know what's what, since it's so different from the regular carrying positions.
Can anyone offer guidance, or does no one actually hip carry without magic spells?? Some of the jumps between steps really feels like something from /restofthefuckingowl . I was really hoping someone would've posted a photo laying the carrier flat, with labels for straps and whatnot, but no such luck.

2017.10.02 16:33 ruffolous Motor Control - FRC Dr. Michael Chivers

Simply defined, motor control is the process by which humans (and animals) use their nervous system to activate their muscles and coordinate their joints and limbs to perform a desired movement. Looking superficially at this definition, motor control seems easy to understand and easy to apply in a practical setting when working with our patients and clients. However, the topic of motor control is one that is much deeper to understand and one that is much tougher to apply, which can lead to confusion and inappropriate labelling.
Let me give you some very simple and common examples.
Patient/Client 1 has poor scapular retraction noticeable on a push up, which we prioritize as a need to address and give the appropriate movement drills or exercises to help with the “motor control” of the scapula.
Patient/Client 2 has a poor ability to squat. It is noticeable that he/she cannot squat deep enough for intended demands, or when he/she gets out of the hole the knees come in and the back rounds. This must be a “motor control” problem.
Patient/Client 3 has noticeable balance issues when tested in tandem heel to toe walking on a board or beam. This must be due to poor “motor control”. As such continuing to try and walk on the board can help improve their “motor control”
It may be a matter of semantics to some, but in reality none of those situations should be labelled as motor control due to a perceived impairment in the movement or the movement goal. Let me offer an explanation.
As mentioned, motor control is how our nervous system functions to activate and assimilate the muscles, joints and limbs appropriately to perform a motor skill. In reality, what this boils down to is how our nervous system is able to take in the necessary information provided to it and produce a desired movement. In the realm of dynamic systems, this can be conceptualized as solving the degrees of freedom problem. Traditionally, the DOF problem has been referred to as motor redundancy, although more recent theorists have more appropriately termed it the Principle of Motor Abundance. Essentially this means that the human body has so many options to perform a movement that it almost seems impossible to understand how it picks just one way… while actually it does not. Because of the degrees of freedom problem, each repetition of a movement can be coordinated differently depending on what may be the most efficient way to do so according to the nervous system at that one point in time. Thus, motor control as an entity on its own cannot be directly observed or trained and therefore it is difficult to speak of it as something that is easily applicable to our patients/clients movement repertoire.
When we watch movement in the general sense, what we are observing is motor behaviour, which is how the system acts during the performance of the movement goal. What you are seeing during a movement is that person’s best attempt at the task they are being asked to perform based on a huge number of factors, rightly characterized as constraints that come into play during performance. The constraints shape the performance of the task and are the prime influence on the task goal. Even further, the individual constraints of the patient/client must be considered first and therefore we must ask ourselves if there is mismatch between the conditions of the individual performing the task and the demands of the task itself instead of defaulting to the seemingly simple explanation that there is a motor control issue.
So to come back to the examples again from above, from a constraints perspective, how do we know from direct observation that the patients/clients performing the movements actually have the required degrees of freedom and the acquired motor skills deemed necessary to perform them?
We do not. We cannot.
Motor control is an overarching umbrella that requires us to know how the systems solves the degrees of freedom problem which is impossible to know from simple observation.
Motor control is entirely dependent upon adequate motor learning and eventual motor skill acquisition. It is the learning of skills that leads to an improvement in the overall coordinative structuring. Motor learning appears to be the result of actual synaptic reorganization within the nervous system, and the subsequent stabilized and improved neuronal connections appear to be the foundation of durable motor memory, which allows for efficient, optimal control during movement.
So when we as movement professionals are working with patients/clients in a clinical/rehab or training setting, what we are doing is improving motor learning or movement skill acquisition. We emphasize the acquiring of various motor skills for performance enhancement or the re-acquisition of motor skills that have been degraded due to injury or disease. By improving motor learning or the skill acquisition of a particular task or exercise or movement drill we have given a patient in our designed rehab program, and by improving the nervous system’s perception of that movement, we are ultimately improving motor control. The ability of our nervous system to make cortical representations, the ability of our perceptual systems to perceive the necessary sensory information and the ability of our mask system to move and generate feedback all have to happen appropriately for each and every motor task to be carried out effectively. That is motor control.

2012.11.17 23:03 Shin-LaC SS 5-week update: my findings so far

Hello Fittit! It's been five weeks since I started going to the gym, and I thought I'd post about my experiences as a fitness neophyte.

Exercises

First, some data. I do the basic SS routine three times a week. Here are the weights I used when I first started, and those I used in the last two sessions:
(note: all weights are in lbs because my American gym has everything labeled in lbs, even though it hurts my engineer heart)
Squat Bench Deadlift Press Power clean
start 65 45 65 45 45
now 145 80 135 60 75
In addition to the basic SS routine, I do some additional exercises using the machines in the gym. I usually do lat pulldowns, a tricep exercise whose name I can't remember, and shoulder presses.

Food

To ensure a caloric surplus, I've been forcing myself to eat more than usual. The bar at my gym has good sandwiches and protein smoothies, so I usually have a meal there when I go. I also try to get bigger portions at my other meals, but I have a small stomach and there's a limit to how much I can eat in one sitting. Instead, I try to supplement my caloric intake with things I can snack on throughout the day, such as nuts, cookies, beef jerky. Basically, I don't have a detailed diet plan, nor do I measure much (although I check the nutritional information to make sure I get the most protein for my buck): I just try to eat more, and especially more protein.

Results

When I started out, I had not done any sports in years. I was thin, but very weak, as you can see from the table. I have seen linear improvement in my squats, while I still have trouble with the upper body exercises. My weakest point is the overhead press: I should be pressing 80 lbs if I had progressed linearly, but I'm still at 60. I think I'm also going to deload the squats a little at this point, to concentrate on my form a little more.
In terms of muscle growth, I think I'm seeing good results. My legs definitely got bigger: I had to stop wearing my favorite pair of jeans because I could hardly fit into them any more. :( My arms and my pectorals have also grown noticeably. My shoulders, eeh, not so much. My back also feels much stronger.
I can't tell if my abs have grown, because they are covered by a layer of fat. Alas, the hypercaloric diet is giving me a gut. It's not huge, but compared to what I'm used to, I'd say that's the part of my body that has seen the most growth.
Alas, I didn't take a picture at the beginning of the process. I did take one yesterday and another two weeks before... they actually look identical. Oh well. :/
By the way, several years ago I went to a different gym, where they gave me a training program using mostly machines and high reps (sets of 15), and also some cardio (running, cycling). I found it very boring, though. Compared to that, I'm liking SS far more:
  1. the lack of cardio and the low reps make it far, far less boring
  2. it's hard to say, because it's been a long time and I'm doing different exercises, but I feel like one month of SS gave me about the same results as 6 months of the old regimen.

Other effects

I feel quite good about exercising, even though my results so far are not great (I'm still weak and I still look bad). I feel more confident, too.
Contrary to some other reports, I must say that my sex drive has almost completely disappeared. I count that as a positive, as it helps me concentrate on gains.
I have noticed that my healing time has gotten worse, too. I hurt my foot (unrelated to lifting) and it was intermittently swollen for seeral days. I scraped my knees, and the skin seems to have taken longer than expected to go back to normal. Finally, I recently hurt my back a bit at the gym (there's a spot between my spine and my right scapula that hurts a bit if I make certain movements); I am not sure if it was the lifting, or the fact that I could not stretch that day, or both. Maybe I should have skipped the following lifting session?
I'm not sure if the slower healing I'm seeing is due to a lack of sleep (for several days, I was unable to sleep much, or to the fact that I keep stressing my body through exercise, or what else.

Posture

Since I work with computers, I also have bad posture. I have been trying to do some exercises for it (using this guide, which seems to be offline now), but I can't do all of them (my gym has no foam rolls, for instance). The gym also has a stretching rack with a table depicting a number of exercises, and I was doing the ones for upper and lower body strength training, but with all this stretching, I am wondering if something is redundant, or even counterproductive. Maybe this should be its own post?
