2024.05.17 12:05 FunnyWay4369 Lasting Happiness and reaching Nirvana

(ii) As what also causes lasting happiness, 1:12
Furthermore, practising generosity,
They will swiftly meet with a superior,
Completely cutting the stream of samsara.
Having such a cause, they proceed to the yield of peace.
Normally, people perform acts of generosity for worldly gains rather than for enlightenment. But here Chandrakirti says that even if people do not have this greater kind of motivation and if they practice generosity only with worldly motivations such as becoming richer, as long as they keep on practising generosity, then eventually they will meet a superior being. This also comes from a sutra, which says that aryas, which are non-samsaric beings such as bodhisattvas, are bound to go to generous people. They are attracted to them. For example, the Buddha’s begging bowl represents that he goes to town to beg alms.
Once there was a small tear in Buddha’s robe. Ananda offered to repair it, but Buddha declined his offer, put on his robe, and went to a nearby village to beg alms, as he usually did. He met a poor girl with nothing to wear who came and sewed this tear up with grass. At that moment Shariputra laughed, and when he was later asked why, he said that at that very moment in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, Lord Indra ordered Vishwakarma, the god of architectural design and engineering, to measure the palace for her when she would take rebirth there. But she did not want that, as her aim was enlightenment. I think she became the nun Utpalmo, named thus because she was as beautiful as the utpala flower. Although she was a nun, she was so beautiful that a local prince chased her. After many days she stopped and asked him which part of her body he liked most. By this time, she was already a Foe-Destroyer. The prince was stunned, and did not know how to reply, so he said he liked her eyes. Then she took out both of her eyes and gave them to him. At that moment, the prince realised the truth of phenomena, understanding that beauty is only a compounded thing, just an idea.
If a person keeps on engaging in generosity, one day he will meet a superior being. Then he will hear the teachings, cut the stream of Samsara and reach Nirvana.

2024.05.17 12:04 tareekpetareek Manpasand was an accounting fraud with beverages on the side

Let’s say you’re a company that wants to commit an elaborate fraud. What is the most egregious fraud that you can think of?
Maybe let’s not start with egregious. Let’s start with something simple! Here’s something that’s reasonably common:
  1. Pay people to buy your product (or like give them huge discounts or whatever). Inflate your revenue. Lie about your actual customers.
  2. Hype your company up. Do an IPO, take your company public. Sell some of your own stock.
  3. Slowly try fixing your numbers. If you happen to succeed, that’s great! You win. If you don’t succeed, you still win? You’ve done your IPO and sold some stock. That’s a lot of money.
This is the simple kind of fraud, which also makes it difficult to identify. You might have to talk to the company’s customers, read the fine print in its disclosures, do sanity checks of its financials, that sort of stuff. It’s tough to catch the simple kind of fraud, which is also why so much of it exists in the form of whispers and rumours without ever getting proven.
Now let’s go egregious:
  1. Why pay people to buy your product? Hell, why even have a product? Just manifest in your imagination that there are hundreds of thousands of people buying whatever you’re selling and write it down.
  2. Hype your company up! Do an IPO, sell some stock. This part remains the same.
  3. Don’t bother fixing your numbers. Instead, keep publishing imaginary revenue figures. Keep selling stock to public investors. Publish your financials every quarter with whatever numbers you like.
If you do this, there’s only so far you can go. Eventually, your hype will attract attention and someone might figure out that both your customers and product were creative imagination.
Here’s a SEBI order from late in April about Manpasand Beverages. Manpasand used to be a beverages company based in Gujarat. In 2019 the company shut down because it got caught in a bunch of frauds. It’s only now that SEBI published the details of what was happening. Probably best summarised by fund manager Amit Mantri: [1]
https://preview.redd.it/25d5f1phny0d1.jpg?width=603&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1feaa1afa5f56420c74c5887202a6ac80630fcd

Fake it till you make it (or don’t)

Manpasand faked its revenue (of course). It also faked its expenses, customers, vendors, tax liabilities, etc. How did it get away with doing this stuff? I don’t know, someone’s gotta ask Deloitte. They were Manpasand’s auditor for eight years, resigning only in 2018. The company’s fraud came out officially in 2019—Deloitte, whose job was to make sure the books were right and also had access to all the inside information, figured that something was off only a year earlier!
Anyway, SEBI appointed its own auditor to figure out what was wrong with Manpasand’s accounts and the auditor came back with a bunch of stuff. [2]
Here’s the bit about Manpasand inflating its revenue. From SEBI’s order:
Manpasand created 38 different companies and it both “sold” its products to those companies as well as “bought” stuff from some of them. Basically, Manpasand created...

Updated 3996 reasons list (repost)
Updated 3996 Reason List (repost after original deleted)
I updated the dated “3996 reasons” list that the NALC has been floating around forever to include reasons that are more relevant in 2024 (like the Metris and MDD scanner).
I went ahead and organized everything into categories to try and help carriers articulate related reasons that aren’t listed. This obviously isn’t a complete list but I think it’s pretty extensive and can easily be adapted to different circumstances.
Let me know if there’s anything I missed or any criticism of the wording I used on the list. I’m not the ultimate authority on anything and I’d love to crowd source feedback and suggestions to make the list better.
I squeezed everything into a single page so that it can be saved onto a single image that can be easily shared with carriers through text message or facebook message boards, and can be quickly and conveniently referenced on the workroom floor.
Remember that a 3996 is NOT a negotiation, it is the carrier INFORMING management why they will not be able to complete their assignment in eight hours. Here is an NALC guide to requesting the 3996, filling it out completely, and dealing with the possibly contentious interaction with management that follows.

2024.05.17 12:00 AutoModerator Daily r/LawnCare No Stupid Questions Thread

Please use this thread to ask any lawn care questions that you may have. There are no stupid questions. This includes weed, fungus, insect, and grass identification. For help on asking a question, please refer to the "How to Get the Most out of Your Post" section at the top of the sidebar.
Check out the sidebar if you're interested in more information on plant hardiness zones, identifying problems, weed control, fertilizer, establishing grass, and organic methods. Also, you may contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for local info.
How to Get the Most out of Your Post:
Include a photo of the problem. You can upload to imgur.com for free and it's easy to do. One photo should contain enough information for people to understand the immediate area around the problem (dense shade, extremely sloped, etc.). Other photos should include close-ups of the grass or weed in question: such as this, this, or this. The more photos or context to the situation will help us identify the problem and propose some solutions.

2024.05.17 12:00 ChancellorBasil21 I trained a GPT to act as a world historian by training it with my notes

Howdy everyone,
I wanted to share an exciting project I've been working on for the past couple of weeks. I've been developing a custom AI to assist with my tabletop game world, which I've been building for close to 10 years. This world is incredibly vast and complex, and I often lose track of how everything connects or need some inspiration that's relevant to my setting.
I've been exploring AI development over the past year, specifically using the tools offered by OpenAI. I had the idea to create a custom GPT that acts as a historian from my setting. The AI provides ideas and inspiration based on my world and allows my players to explore the lore without overwhelming me or me overwhelming them. The project has been going really well, so I wanted to share how I went about it.
Creating the Custom GPT
  1. Using OpenAI's Custom GPTs: The main task was to train the AI with my world-building notes. I use OneNote for my notes, and my notebook has around 500 some odd pages last time I checked.
  2. Preparing the Notes: I created a copy of my notebook and removed pages that I didn't want my players to see or find out about through the GPT. I also cleaned up unfinished or contradictory areas.
  3. Exporting Notes: Finally, I exported the notebook as a PDF and added it to the custom GPT's knowledge base.
Overall, I've been very happy with the results. Having a custom GPT as a historian for my world has been a game-changer. It helps keep everything consistent, provides quick answers that are based in the world, and offers relevant inspiration based on the history and lore I've built. However, it is not to accurate when it comes to dates, but that may just be for my setting in particular.
There are a few additional features I plan to add to make it even more useful during game sessions:
  1. Economics and Pricing: Train the GPT on more data about economics and pricing to help me figure out the cost of goods on the fly during a session.
  2. Rules Integration: Give it a solid grasp of the D&D rules I use so it can create magic items, spells, etc.
  3. Inspiration: Enhance its ability to generate world-accurate storylines, side quests, characters, etc.
  4. Travel Distance and Time Calculation: This one might be challenging to implement, but my goal is to eventually teach the GPT to read maps or use a database of reference points along with their distances and locations. This would allow it to calculate travel times between locations on the fly. This feature would be incredibly useful, as my games often involve long-distance travel across the vast world of Novistar.
Try It Yourself!
I've made a copy of the GPT and linked it below for anyone who wants to give it a try. You can explore the world of Novistar and see how the AI historian works. Please note that this is a separate copy to avoid any potential issues with outside input influencing the main AI. Here’s the link: Try the Novistar Historian GPT
Feel free to ask me any questions about the process or share your own experiences with using AI for world-building!
Happy world-building!

2024.05.17 11:52 Formadivix Data/surveys on showing/not showing delivery times?

I'm cross-posting this from CustomerService.
I work for an e-commerce website in Customer service and I have tried to argue to my manager and bosses that we should absolutely be showing expected delivery times (in X working days) at checkout. As it stands, our customers have to crawl through a dense FAQ to find this out.
To me, it's a no-brainer. We should provide those ETAs. Every single one of our rivals does it, everyone in e-commerce does it, we should have been doing this all along.
We use Shopify so providing that information is quite easy.
I think it is inintuitive and a bit scummy to not show delivery times. Customers are often put off by the absence of that information. They call and email us a lot and we do provide them with an answer, but I expect we lose a lot of business by not being forthright with this information. It's weird that we are so
Management argues that it could bite us in the ass and lead to more customers being dissatisfied with delivery times, since providing a window also tells them with and idea of what's an abnormal delivery time. Since management wants us to remain easily available on the phone, they say this could lead to more calls than before.
I don't find that particularly convincing, and even then, we can always adjust the ETAs to reflect possible delays or put it in the small print that it is only an estimate. I think overall we're letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Is anyone in the industry aware of any surveys, data, or studies that compare showing vs. not showing ETAs at checkout in e-commerce?

Hi. I am using Vivaldi on Linux with Wayland support for over 0.5 year. Everything worked smooth, until ~2 month ago when wayland support was broken. 2024.05.17 11:39 EnoughHistorian2166 Saving huge amounts of text in databases.

I have been programming for about 6 years now and my mind has started working on the possible architecture /inner workings behind every app/webpage that I see. One of my concerns, is that when we deal with social media platforms that people can write A LOT of stuff in one single post, (or maybe apps like a Plants or animals app that has paragraphs of information) these have to be saved somewhere. I know that in databases relational or not, we can save huge amount of data, but imagine people that write long posts everyday. These things accumulate overtime and need space and management.
I have currently worked only in MSSQL databases (I am not a DBA, but had the chance to deal with long data in records). A clients idea was to put in as nvarchar property a whole html page layout, that slows down the GUI in the front when the list of html page layouts are brought in a datatable.
I had also thought that this sort of data could also be stored in a NOSQL database which is lighter and more manageable. But still... lots of texts... paragraphs of texts.
At the very end, is it optimal to max out the limit of characters in a db property, (or store big json files with NOSQL)??
How are those big chunks of data being saved? Maybe in storage servers in simple .txt files?

2024.05.17 11:34 GiveMeYuna New IT policies block an entire College from teaching.

This is a bit of a preamble but it will explain a lot.
To begin with, I was not part of the IT Department, AKA the college Tech Support Department. However, what they did affected the entire college.
The IT Department is the one that maintains every computer in the College from the Headmaster, to the Library and courses etc.
This was back in early 2000s in the UK. How the College computers worked was that apart from the Windows Operating System, all other software is installed on the servers. Each person was given a college account where you have a set list of permissions for one software or another. Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Corel Paint Shop Pro, Quickbooks and many others.
If you’re on one course like Physical Education, then you don’t need access to Paint Shop Pro or Quickbooks, so when you log into your account, you don’t see the programs on your account.
With this sort of thing, whenever you log into your account, it takes a few minutes to load into the desktop. Then a further few minutes to load whatever program you want as it buffers from the servers.
I was a student on a year long (9 month split into 3 terms of 3 months) studying a BTEC in Computing. This means my account needed access to various programs like a full Office Suite. Website Creation Program (MS Frontpage I think it was) and several other programs. I think there were like 7 different programs we used throughout the year.
The first term went by smoothly. Then we we left for end of term holiday (which was something like a week off College) only to return for the second term and find something wrong.
We got into the class and logged into our accounts. As the computers spent the usual 3 minutes to login the teacher started giving out information on what we’ll be doing.
However, once we turned to our computers to start working away, we found that we didn’t have access to the required programs. Heck, we didn’t have access to the programs that we used for the last term.
We pointed this out to the teacher who went round the computers only to agree that we couldn’t get on with the lesson.
He went to his office only to find that one of his colleagues was on the phone trying to get through to the IT Department. I say trying as the line was constantly busy. The teacher kept hanging up and retrying.
Our teacher returned to our class and told us that he needs to go to the IT Department to find out what is happening. In the mean time that seeing as we still have internet access, he’ll give us a task to keep us busy.
As we didn’t have access to MS Word, we were to use Windows Notepad or Wordpad for this. We were to do research and pick out parts to build computers. Budget, Mid-Range and High-End.
We were to list components with prices etc.
He then left us alone with this task.
About 45 minutes later he returned, looking frustrated.
He propped himself against his desk and called for our attention.
He explained what had happened.
During the end of term holiday, the IT Department changed their policies on student access without discussing with the teachers. Apparently the IT courses were not a victim of this. Every student across every course run by the College was affected.
What was the policy change?
Every teacher needed to submit a list of their students and what programs is required for their course before each term. When end of term holidays comes around, access to the previous terms programs ends.
With this change, students couldn’t do anything until the teachers made the submissions for access.
When he reached the IT Department Offices, there were many teachers lined up to find out what is happening. After talking to the IT Department and basically being fobbed off, the teachers have decided that they’ll make the submissions for access, but also file a complaint against the department.
By the end of the week, before the teacher gave us our lesson work, he held up a printed email which he read to us.
Basically, the Head Office saw the complaints and because this affected a huge chunk of the College, even the Headmaster got involved.
Basically the following happened.
It was discovered the Policy changes were made without even the Head Office knowing about it.
The Head of the IT Department was called into the Headmaster’s Office to explain why the changes were made etc.
They were told to revert the Policies back to how they were but they had deleted the old Policies. So they need to rebuild the Policies to how they were for each course.
The Teachers need to submit course information for their students etc.
The teacher even pointed out in the email which was sent to every member of staff as an apology was signed by the Headmaster himself. Not his receptionist or someone else on his behalf.
The Headmaster said in the email “The Policies were not broken. They should never have been fixed. For many years, the Policies have barely changed and only when technology and/or lessons change to remove something or add something. All Teachers, please show this email to your students and pass on my apologies.”
It took another week for the IT Department to rebuild permissions for most courses. It was courses like the IT Course that I was on that required tweaking on the go. When access to a certain program was required, the Teachers would notify the IT Department and it would be solved. All we had to do was log out of our accounts and re-login to refresh the permissions.

2024.05.17 11:31 FreeRough5779 Account Suspension - No reason given and no responses, where do I go from here?

Hi there,
I opened a new shop last month and was immediately suspended within 24 hours. I was using printify for my artwork and I suspected it was because I didnt disclose that other parties were printing them for me etc. I removed all the listings and lodged an appeal saying I have removed them and wont do this in the future and will disclose that production is handled elsewhere etc.

I received this response:
~"This is Suman from Etsy’s Member Services team. We appreciate you taking the time to file an appeal with Etsy. After careful consideration, we've determined your account does not qualify for reinstatement. We've performed a comprehensive review of your account and the information you provided, and are unable to reconsider this decision.~
~While we’re unable to disclose our internal review criteria or discuss your account status further, if you have questions related to your Payment Account please review~ ~Etsy’s Payments Policy~~.~
~We’re unable to reconsider this decision and can no longer respond to further messages about your account status. We appreciate the time you’ve invested on Etsy and wish you success in your future endeavors. "~

I didn't know where to go from there so I have appealed this again and am just not getting any responses. I am just confused, I would like to fix the issue but its kind of impossible if I am given no information or response?
I did not get an email saying "permanently suspended".
The only thing I can think of, is that I had once opened a sellers store on my buyers account and never did anything with it.
I logged in to see it also says suspended. This was a whimsical, what happens when you open a store, oh okay and then I closed it webpage down and never opened it again. Do you think this is the cause? Any ideas how I can resolve this with etsy?
I cannot post this on the etsy community forum either, just gives me errors.
Any help is very much appreciated,

Kind regards,

N

Roof check needed before solar panel installation?
I've moved into a new house recently, and getting solar panels installed. Do I need someone to inspect my roof before? For context, B&P report said this about the roof.

2024.05.17 11:16 ExLibris68 Frisket Sheets: The Ultimate Form of Recycling in Early Modern Printing

Frisket Sheets: The Ultimate Form of Recycling in Early Modern Printing
Frisket sheets were an essential tool in the early modern printing process, used to mask off parts of a printing form to ensure that ink only reached certain areas of the paper. This allowed printers to create intricate designs, multi-colored texts, and to make corrections without needing to remake an entire printing plate. Here’s a deeper dive into what frisket sheets are and how they exemplify the ultimate form of recycling.
What Are Frisket Sheets?
A frisket sheet is a thin piece of paper or parchment that has holes or cutouts (mostly square holes), strategically placed to allow ink to pass through to the underlying paper only in specific areas. These sheets were used in combination with the printing press to:
  • Control Inking: Prevent ink from reaching unwanted parts of the paper.
  • Multi-Color Printing: Allow for precise application of different colors by masking areas not intended for a specific color.
  • Corrections and Additions: Enable printers to add or correct small text or decorative elements without needing to create a new plate.
This liturgical book was probably printed with a frisket sheet, with a black and a red pass.

Examples from My Collection
In my collection, I have several fascinating examples of frisket sheets that were made from old manuscripts. These sheets offer a unique glimpse into the practice of recycling materials in the early printing industry. Here is a few examples:
https://preview.redd.it/zvyd5jlway0d1.jpg?width=4001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e10065f1989a36ba1ae8521419baa106acd5f0e

This image shows a fragment of a frisket sheet made from a reused manuscript. The cutouts and ink marks are clearly visible, illustrating how this sheet was repurposed in the printing process.
The Ultimate Form of Recycling
The use of old manuscripts as frisket sheets is a remarkable example of resourcefulness and recycling in the early modern period. Here's how the recycling process worked:
  1. Animal Skin to Manuscript: Originally, animal skins were processed into parchment or vellum and used to create manuscripts.
  2. Manuscript to Frisket Sheet: Once these manuscripts became outdated or damaged, they were cut and repurposed as frisket sheets in the printing industry.
  3. Frisket Sheet to Bookbinding: After serving their purpose in printing, these sheets were sometimes further repurposed as part of the structural components of bookbindings, such as spine linings or paste-downs.
This multi-stage recycling process not only highlights the ingenuity of early modern printers but also their respect for materials, ensuring that nothing went to waste.

2024.05.17 11:15 YachtSinker Old DBStar Video Wall setup help

Hi All, I have an old video wall that I have been setting up for a charity that we received as a donation. I have it plugged in and DBStar XMPlayer connected. The software can detect the Sender (HVT2009 V3.42) This can in turn control the receiver (DBStar HUB4.21F) on the LED Panels.
Forgive the terminology as I am not sure on it:
The panels are P10 500mm x 500mm. These are 48 LEDs high and 48 LEDs wide. The panel is made up of 16 modules, each 24 LEDs high and 6 LEDs wide.
The whole screen is 3 panels x 3 panels (1.5 x 1.5m)
I am struggling to find the right settings to configure with for Row and Column, I can get elements of my display to repeat on the panel but it is not calibrated correctly and appears patchy.
I have found one video and a manual to try and explain it but I am still lost! https://www.xpolight.com/files/dbstar-XMPLAYER-control-user-manual.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncd0I3ykUfg&t=307s
The video trys to explain binary (which I am familiar with) around the row numbers, and dividing this by the data groups. When I input what I think is correct, I get the 'row' to show up but it is vertical down the module.
I would appreciate any help with this, will provide any information I can and willing to try anything!
Thank you!

2024.05.17 11:14 Atonist React Native Image flickering

Here's a link showing the flickering
Issue I've been trying to build an app that allows users to swipe on clothes sort of like a Tinder-like experience and I've been having issues with the images flickering whenever I swipe on the top card and the card gets replaced the next card. Essentially after the animation finishes, the previous card flashes for a brief second before I am able to swipe on the next card. I believe the issue is which how I manage the swapping animation as I essentially just increment the index of my array holding the image url and other information.
What I've tried
Simplified Code
const AnimatedView = Animated.createAnimatedComponent(View); export default function App() { const data = Object.values(clothesJson[0].data); const {width: screenWidth} = useWindowDimensions(); const [currentIndex, setCurrentIndex] = useState(0); var currentCard = data[currentIndex]; const nextCard = data[(currentIndex+1)%data.length]; const translateX = useSharedValue(0); const contextX = useSharedValue(0); const rotation = useDerivedValue(() => interpolate( translateX.value, [0, screenWidth], [0, 20] ) + 'deg'); //Rotation animation when swipping for main card const cardStyle = useAnimatedStyle(() => { return { transform: [ { translateX: translateX.value }, { rotate: rotation.value }, ], }; }); //Growing animation for next card const nextCardStyle = useAnimatedStyle(() => { return { transform: [ { scale: interpolate( translateX.value, [-1.5*screenWidth, 0, 1.5*screenWidth], [1, 0.95, 1] ), }, ] ) }; }); //Swipping logic const swipe = Gesture.Pan() .onBegin(() => { contextX.value = translateX.value; }) .onChange((event) => { translateX.value = event.translationX + contextX.value; }) .onEnd((event) => { //Swipe Speed < 800 && Amount card moved < 150 if (Math.abs(event.velocityX) < 800 && Math.abs(event.translationX) < 150) { translateX.value = withSpring(0, {mass:0.5}); } else { //Check to see which way card should be hidden translateX.value = withSpring( 1.5 * screenWidth * Math.sign(event.translationX), {mass:0.15}, () => { //I think the issue is in this logic here runOnJS(setCurrentIndex)(((currentIndex + 1)%data.length)); translateX.value = 0; } ) } }) return (               ); }

2024.05.17 11:11 maxikaz19 Does Bitfinex have fees?

Yes, Bitfinex does have fees associated with its services. The platform charges fees for various activities, including trading, deposits, and withdrawals.
For trading, Bitfinex employs a maker-taker fee model. The fees you incur depend on whether you are a maker or a taker in the trade. Makers, who provide liquidity by placing limit orders, generally incur lower fees compared to takers, who remove liquidity by matching existing orders. As of the latest fee schedule, makers can expect fees ranging from 0.1% to 0.0% depending on their 30-day trading volume, while taker fees range from 0.2% to 0.055%. These fees are subject to change, so it's advisable to check Bitfinex's official website for the most current information.
Deposits can also incur fees, though this depends on the method and currency used. For instance, cryptocurrency deposits are usually free, but some exceptions apply, particularly for small amounts. Bank wire deposits typically have a fee of 0.1%, with a minimum of $60.
Withdrawal fees vary significantly based on the currency and method. Cryptocurrency withdrawals often have a fixed fee in the respective currency, for example, 0.0004 BTC for Bitcoin withdrawals. Fiat withdrawals via bank wire transfer usually cost 0.1% of the withdrawal amount, with a minimum fee of $60.
In addition to these, margin funding and borrowing on Bitfinex come with their own set of fees. Lenders earn interest, which is paid by borrowers, and the platform takes a 15% fee on the interest earned.
For the most accurate and updated fee information, visiting the Bitfinex fees page on their official site is recommended.
