Continued from part one.
In the mirror I saw a figure of the darkness next to the foot of my bed. I screamed, only for the figure to dash back inside my closet and close the doors behind it. To the naked eye, the doors seemed to roll back on their own, but because of the many mirrors inside my room, I could see the shadowy figure.
“What’s wrong?” my mom burst into my room not even four seconds later.
“J-j-just a nightmare?” I was uncertain if my imagination was too strong for my own good so I held back on the truth.
I wish I told her the truth. That wasn’t the last time I would see the figure in the mirror.
It happened again, about five years later. Yeah it didn’t happen right away. I wondered if the figure I saw was friendly and I simply scared it away for a while. That was my first mindset, but then I second guessed myself and simply thought maybe it was just my imagination playing with me.
At age 12, things started to become rocky with my parents. They fought over the same things, but they also fought over me. I had gone into the world of music to the point where I wanted to take up guitar, piano, and violin. My mom took one side of the stance where she didn’t believe that I could commit to any of them. My dad believed the opposite, fighting that I could do anything if I set my mind to it.
Again, conflict resided. My angry mother could still barge into my room if I didn’t lock the doors. She once found me writing, insisted on me showing her what I wrote, when I resisted she pulled it away from me and read my vampire fanfiction.
I was an angsty girl. Hence my writings were a bit suggestive at the time. My mom and my dad both read my work. My dad actually liked what I wrote aside from the fact it was about the supernatural. Of course, my mother again got mad since she’s the most religious in our family. She was, in a sense, a heretic.
Needless to say, since my family’s religion absolutely detests “spiritualistic and demonic” media, I got grounded. Also to clarify, yes this also meant I never read or watched the Harry Potter series, including the Twilight series. Although I don’t think I missed out on much with the Twilight series lol. Eventually I managed to rent a book that I got from my school’s library, called Hush, Hush, which laid in my backpack, tempting me to read it.
So there I was, no laptop and in my room. I didn’t really care since I had a guitar and a notebook. I still could find pleasure outside of my laptop, which of course my mother absolutely detested as well. Whenever she grounded me, she used to take away any kind of toy. Then, once she realized I could read on my own and was making up stories when I couldn’t read, she began to take books away. Punishments with my family wasn’t really a punishment, I could always find a way to entertain myself. Even if she took my notebooks away, I’d still end up daydreaming about something, even act out scenes I’d come up with in my head.
Now you can understand why I pushed off the incident with the figure in the mirror as a figment of my imagination. I had figured it was a draft, that the wheels and tracking were well lubricated with some kind of oil that makes it hard for them to stay in place.
Sitting on my bed at age 12, I leant back and closed my eyes. I had notebooks, several books, a keyboard for me to practice piano on, and a guitar. It wasn’t a big deal. (Yes I was a spoiled child. I’m owning up to this since I was the only girl among four boys- plus I was also 13 years younger than my youngest brother.) However I was so tired, that I decided on lazily daydreaming. Besides, I could always sneak my laptop back late at night.
As a devoted writer, I continued on imagining the story I began. I imagined what it would feel like to have fangs teasing the throat of the neck, how it would be to be kissed and then bitten by a vampire... my mind was rolling and it didn’t stop. I was a twelve year old girl going through puberty.
I told myself to stop and I decided to pull out the book, smiling at my little success. I went back to the page I left off on at the library earlier that day. I buried myself into the book and became sleepy. I nearly finished the book by the time I set the book aside and stupidly put it on my bedside table.
I passed out soon after. I don’t recall what kind of dream I had at first, all I know is that sometime later in the night, I woke up again, but I could not move my body at all. I looked around my room, which was now fully dark. I barely could recognize anything around me. The familiar outline of my vanity was gone, any silver reflection was gone, I did not see a single mirror, so I knew I was no longer in my room anymore.
A slight humming noise was around me, the room I was in lit up with a red flashing light. It felt like I was being pinned down by some kind of restraint system, so I looked down and noticed these short pale creatures crawling on top of me, towards my face. I felt a sharp sting in my leg, and I knew one of the creatures had bit me already.
It became to feel like sharp knives stabbing me all over my body, until five creatures met my face, their eyes sullen- beady- staring down at me with bloodied mouths and lunged at my neck, causing me to scream..The sound finally piercing through and I could hear myself breathing again, I could hear my screams and my frantic prayers escaping my lips.
Had my mom not come into my room and slapped me on my face, jolting me out of it- whatever it was- I would have seen more than I could bare. She saw the book and her anger brewed even more at me.
“Are you tempting the demons to attack you or something?” she fumed and took the book off of the table. She led me down to the entryway and opened the garage door. “Put it in there.”
I followed her command and put the book into the garage. I knew it wasn’t the book’s fault, but it was associated with “demunz” in her eyes, so I didn’t dare argue against her.
“Do you want to die? If you keep associating with demons, you know god will never forgive you. You won’t inherit everlasting life, only everlasting death. You know that right?!?” she yelled at me, had my dad been there that night- he would have stopped her from going that far. I suddenly missed him.
Her anger then died down after she ranted at me, once she recognized that I was still petrified. She at least brought me to, which made me thankful, but I also felt betrayed. She was supposed to protect me, but all she cared about was the idea of force feeding me her belief system. All she cared about was telling me I was wrong.
“I’m-” she had begun, and I just looked away from her and saw a shadow in my mirror again, standing behind my mom. It didn’t feel as eerie anymore. It felt almost comforting to see it, it moved from my mom to me. A figure of it’s arm wrapped around my shoulder, and I felt the cool breeze raise goosebumps at it’s touch.
“Do you want me to sleep with you tonight?” her voice lowered.
“I’ll sleep alone,” I remarked, still stung with the hurt from her hurtful remark.
She looked hurt for a second, but then returned to her normal frown. “I’ll sleep in the little entertainment room next to you, if you need me just yell out again.”
“Fine,” I simply just pulled my blankets over me again, waited for her to leave, then cried into my pillow.
My mom left, not seeing the dark figure in the mirror and went into the adjacent room. At her departure, the darkness came into my bed, the eerie feeling no longer there and it snuggled against me.
Shh. It hushed me and brushed my hair.
I didn’t question it. I had been afraid of it for so long, but with the sweet affection it gave me- the affection I desired and longed for from both of my parents.
The falling tears turned into a silent sob, my body shook against the bed, little breathy whimpers muffled by my pillow.
Shh, it repeated until I fell asleep again.
When morning came, I woke up with a sore neck and I was irritated with my mom. I remembered what happened and then I snuck out to my laptop and searched up what had happened to me. I learned it was sleep paralysis and figured maybe my imagination went too far with the vampire thing. I was stiff, my body was so sore and I saw my closet doors closed.
Again, I had felt as if my imagination had made it up. I knew the kind of comfort it gave me is what I desperately longed for. It gave me what my family didn’t, and I hated myself. I thought it was a figment of my imagination since it knew all the things I wanted. That is, until something else showed up. The shadow figure in the mirrors was just the start of it all.

Part of me is hoping one of the people involved see's this or has info I can use to get more information
Whenever I recollect this to my parents they both say they had zero knowledge about what went on. When I was in 1st grade (2003-2004?)I was called aside from class and taken to a separate administrative room used for extended care. This was a small private roman Catholic pre-k-8th grade school that is part of the South Bay area diocese. I don't remember which teacher or staff member brought me over but I was in the room with two other class mates who I'll call AM and AF (their names both started with "A" one was male and the other female). We were introduced to two college students from a local university which was either San Jose State or Stanford. I maybe wrong but those two stick out the most from what I remember. When the study began we were asked to choose our a toy from a shelf. After we took turns telling a story about an argument or figuring out a conflict. Those details I can't remember as it's been around 20 years since. When I went to college for psych I learned this is often a tactic similar to that used when kids have been SA'd. As far as I know I was never a victim but the common denominator was that we were part of broken house holds. AM was being raised by his mom while his dad was in prison, I was never told why and never asked. AF told me her dad broke up with her mom because he realized he was gay. My parents were in the middle of a divorced because my dad was a violent alcoholic. My main concern behind all this is that no one actually consented or informed and that this was potentially used as data for something more important. I basically feel gas lit about this ever happening as I fell out of touch whith either classmate and my parents never gave consent for me to be part of this. I don't trust the diocese to give accurate info on this. The school was shady; like it took parents complaining to hang up my graduating class picture in the hall. They completely skipped out class graduating on a wall of class photos that spaned 2 decades. Back in 3rd grade a piece came out in the local paper that the diocese allowed a convicted sex offender to volunteer at around 3 local schools withing the diocese including mine. I definitely came in contact with "Jim" and remember him attempting to groom girls in my class with small gifts.

Or is it just me? Getting strong buzz from Toy Story 1 vibes from him. How he talks, his mannerisms, how he has power armor. He’s buzz but like racist. His comments in Good-neighbor. What he says about super mutants and ghouls. Forget about it you can’t take him anywhere without him saying something prejudice. Had to ditch the guy because he was embarrassing me.

This is my first serious relationship, we met on a dating app and tbh I wasn't looking but caught a gem in my eyes. As the story usually goes, things were awesome at first. We got serious pretty fast imo but I appreciated the enthusiasm. Sexually very compatible but oftentimes reckless if I'm being honest.
2 major obstacles for us hit at around 5-6 months in that through us off our sexual rhythm. First, she moved from her apartment that was around 20 minutes from me towards the outskirts of the city. Bigger house but less privacy. She now lives with her 2 sisters and her father moved into the living room since due to homelessness (her mother also visits for periods of time which adds to the stress). Although I get along great with the family, the lack of privacy along with the layout of the house doesn't do us any favours.
Secondly, we got pregnant and decided not to keep it. It was extremely rough on us. Personally, this contributed more to the sexual decline since I developed a ton of anxiety with penetrative sex. I was happy to be intimate with toys, kissing and oral but would get in my head and freeze up with penetration. It completely changed our attitudes towards sex.
We've done our best to remedy the situation with holidays, excursions, sneaky silent sex stuff which does help for a moment but ultimately I feel like things won't get significantly better until we move in together and have our own space where we can be as sexually expressive as we want. I'm working on getting my driving licence and saving for our own spot.
I don't want to lose her, I know she misses the connection we had and so do I but I struggle staying in the mood knowing my every move might be heard by her dad on the couch downstairs and slow and silent sex isn't doing it for me anymore.
Any advice is welcome. I think I just needed to get this off my chest. I feel like an asshole for not having sex with her or even wanting it as much at this point. We've talked it though a couple times and she feels similarly but it's still a hard pill to swallow. We're still so young, I'm wondering if it's better if we just part ways but I'm not ready to give up.

Hi guys, I need help. to make a long story very short, i have two cats 1.5 yrs old, littermates, one m one f, both have been fixed since they’re were kittens. my boy sometimes gets fits of aggression- sometimes seemingly unprovoked- in which he will bite at and swat at and lunge at either me or his sister. This is not what he acts like the majority of the time, in fact he is normally super snuggly with me and his sister. these fits just come on out of nowhere and last a few minutes. I have no idea what is causing these fits, nor do i know how to stop them. i’ve asked online ask-a-vet and was recomended some supplements to give him. I'll be trying these eventually, when I can afford to order them online.
in the meantime, i need to know how to safely separate him from his sister when he gets aggressive and corners her or starts biting her. She is very mild-mannered and doesn't stand up for herself very well, and i often have to step in when i hear her cry out while he is biting her or cornering her. usually when i distract him and get his attention away from his sister, he turns to me and starts biting and swatting at me. ive tried feeding them when he gets like this, ive tried using catnip to calm him down, playing with him when he gets energetic, nothing helps. I’ve tried all the tricks you see online like making a loud noise, throwing a toy, or spraying them with water. the issue with most of these is that they just draw his attention to me and cause him to start attacking me, which also isn’t ideal. Either that or he simply looks up for a moment before going back to his sister.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop him from attacking his sister / safely break up a fight while also discouraging him from attacking me ? Thank you so much in advance.
Also if I see any comments about “he is just an aggressive cat you need to get rid of him” i’ll be deleting those. we need none of that energy thank you.

Hey everyone, EzeDoesIt back at it again with a surprise spoiler breakdown of everything Creative Director of the Rules and Lore Team, Luis Loza ( u/Paizo_Luis ), talked about during his interview today from BadLuckGamer! This was a last minute notification for me, so I made sure to spend the time today detailing every spoiler Luis talked about. He held back a few times, due to how close PaizoCon was (coming up next weekend!). But he did spill some beans, so I'll be relaying what was said.

Beware ye, for there do be spoilers:
Gorum was chosen as the god to die, since his death would result in a lot of interesting changes and developments in the setting. It was not due to Gorum being boring, but rather the possibilities of the stories his death would create made it so he was the one that needed to die.
At one point, the god that was slated to die was actually Torag, not Gorum! Luis cited the ending hidden message in Lost Omens: Highhelm as a hint for Torag's possible death, and also set up the Dwarven Pantheon without Torag as either another hint of his death, or as a possible explanation if he did go on living ("You need to learn to live without me"). There ARE changes to the dwarven pantheon in the coming months, though!
Nethys was never on the chopping block. Luis doesn't want to "pop that balloon", and feels that the mechanics around magic would've needed to be changed in response to him dying. So he's been safe since the beginning. Again, the update to the Archives of Nethys lining up to Nethys being marked safe was a coincidence, but a fun one at that!
Luis was asked if there was anything in Pathfinder that he worked on that he was particularly proud of? And Luis answered, saying he's the most proud of developing the Automaton ancestry, and was really proud of being able to secretly doubling the ancestry's feat count by having the Enhancements in the level 1-9 feats.
Luis' crown jewel book he's worked on is Lost Omens: Divine Mysteries! AND Divine Mysteries was actually conceived BEFORE the OGL fiasco! They always wanted to do a sequel to Lost Omens: Gods & Magic, and came up with Yvali to delve into what makes a god and what makes them tick. Having a good framing device/narrative makes writing books more exciting for writers, and that excitement can definitely be felt by those who read the books!
Different pantheons are gonna be talked about in depth. The Orc pantheon and the Crucible will be covered. The Goblin pantheon, due to the interesting bits with the Barghest Goblin gods will be covered (Eze Note: this was mentioned before the OGL stuff came up in conversation, so not sure if Barghest Goblin gods will still be around or if the Goblin gods will still be Barghests, given new Barghests in Monster Core). The Azlanti pantheon is being explored as well, talking about how previously prominent gods fell into obscurity.
Luis made sure to grab every god stat block he could find and update them for the Remaster. All of the domains across all the books and AP backmatter have been collected and updated as well. Luis wanted to make sure every god was covered, so players wouldn't be left out in the cold due to switching to the Remaster version of the rules.
Luis talked about his job as a Creative Director of the Rules and Lore team, and cited an example where he had to make the call on whether Centaurs should have pointed ears or rounded ears. After consulting previous artwork and seeing it was split in the middle, Luis decided that Centaurs will have rounded ears. That way, it's one less detail artists will have to worry about.
The freelancers working on Divine Mysteries didn't know about Gorum's death! Gorum was put in the outline, and Luis assigned Gorum to himself to help keep the scent off the trail. Only the freelancer working on Arazni's section knew about Gorum's death ahead of the announcement, due to Arazni's promotion to the Core 20.
Luis was asked why archetypes aren't playtested like classes are, and Luis answered that the designers know how to make archetypes due to their knowledge of how classes work, and generally archetypes don't have brand new tech in them that warrants playtesting like that of class playtests (Commanders' Tactics and Exemplars' Ikons being stated as a new tech that needed testing). Also, classes are the thing players are most likely to interact with. Most of the time, you're not getting an archetype at Level 1 (obvious exceptions not-withstanding). But classes are, and so classes need to be put through the paces the most.
Another reason too is, if every archetype needed to be playtested, they would either not be able to put out as many books as they are currently, or they'd have to release far fewer archetypes due to how long the playtest process works. If they needed to playest the archetypes in the APG, they'd only have 5 or 6 archetypes at most, instead of the 40 archetypes we did get.
"Which lore books are you doing for the foreseeable future?" Can't talk about that since they aren't announced, but regional books are a safe bet! Aside from that, just know that the people assigned to future books are assigned to them because they are excited to be leading/writing them, and that should hopefully come through in reading the books in the future.

The Battle Harbinger in Lost Omens: Divine Mysteries is gonna have their spellcasting diminished a bit and have their Divine Font change significantly in order for them to gain new, interesting combat abilities to allow them into the frontlines (or engaging more directly) more so than Warpriests already do. Doing so as a class archetype, they aren't restricted by the small wiggle room of the Cleric's doctrines. Luis dropped the fact they will have "Battle Auras", and left it at that!
Luis answered several of my submitted questions! The first one is in regards to info about Apsu and Dahak. Apsu and Dahak are getting entries in Divine Mysteries, and they are still around. Their story is getting changed and retcon'd, due to the OGL situation. But it's also being expanded! Dahak is gonna have other siblings, so the idea of more Dragon gods are being teased out in Divine Mysteries.
An interesting detail that's not getting talked in full quite yet is about Apsu and Dahak's granted spells for Clerics. Typically, unless they're a god like Nethys or Abraxas who are all about being tied into magic, most gods only grant 3 spells to Clerics. But Dahak and Apsu are "setting a particular and unique standard that's tied to them specifically" in that both will have 4 granted spells each. It'll make sense when you see it, but they'll have that extra 4th spell that they share that is setting up this common theme.
Luis mentions, as a comparison, themes that come up with the gods that people might not be aware of that have come up in development for them. The example he gives is Mzali and the three sun gods. He decided, in development, that they each grant the Zeal domain due to how all three of them have such enthusiasm and drive to them. So they not only share their connection to the sun, but they also all have the Zeal domain. So Apsu/Dahak will be further connected by the spells they grant, as an additional way to associate them with each other.
Next, Luis talked about when content outside of the Core 4 books will see about being Remastered. When it makes sense to bring something forward, they will (like how they're Remastering all of the domains in Divine Mysteries). But he feels like they've done a good job overall with keeping the game compatible with the previous content, sanctification and wizard schools being the most egregious changes. They're gonna address the most glaring things that need adjustment, but he asks to not expect them to go back and adjust every single thing to the Remaster. As the large amount of time it'd take to Remaster 4-5 years of content, it would mean next-to-no time left to create new material.
As an example for the above with bringing forward old content into the Remaster, there'll be updated Witch patrons in Lost Omens: Divine Mysteries, and Baba Yaga's entry the one that was specifically called out! (Eze Note: that'd just leave Mosquito Witch and Pact Patrons left to update to the Remaster, so I wonder if one or both of them will be coming forward as well?)
Luis does encourage this: If there's something that needs to be updated and you want it to be done, he recommends letting them know so they can assess that and find the time and space to get those issues looked at and addressed. Also, it might take time for those opportunities to publish these things to happen! Some might even be happening right now, but until it's announced or published, people just need to be patient and wait for the books to come out.
Someone asked about the Ysoki Tailblade being in the game? Luis doesn't know! He does know there's ancestry weapons in PC2, and of course Ratfolk are in PC2 as well, but he honestly does not know if it's in there. The same person asked about new ancestry weapons in general later. Luis couldn't say for sure there was new ones, and didn't want to get people's hopes up by making a mistake remembering which ones are new or not.
"Who does Arazni have a weird bond with?" In Arazni's entry in Lost Omens: Divine Mysteries, it's confirmed she will have a Herald! Luis wouldn't say who they are. She will have a shared history of trauma with them, and it's said Arazni will be learning to trust others a little bit to explain why she now has a herald (in addition to her needing a herald now that she's a Core 20 god!).
Another of my questions is answered! I asked if Luis was excited that Wrestler is in Player Core 2, and he of course said yes! He's not sure if it's been expanded at all (he joked Mike Sayre might declare it's perfect the way it is, lmao), but he's glad it's in the Core book now for more people to look at.
Luis' favorite player options in Tian Xia Character Guide is some of the new Magus stuff coming, but he doesn't elaborate further as he feels that TXCG is more so James Case and Eleanor Ferron's baby, and they should be the ones to talk about all that's in that book. He's also excited with some of the new ancestry stuff, especially the Yaoguai!
"Has there been anything as a Creative Director that you wanted to change or add, but you weren't able to?" Luis, and maybe other people might have this feeling as well, feels that maybe the timeline for Golarion didn't need to go back 10,000 years. A ton of stuff has changed just within the past 2024 years, so to conceive 10,000 years of history without as much change stretching the suspension of disbelief quite a bit. Obviously there's fantasy tropes of long histories, but sometimes it complicates some matters.
Final question I asked got answered, which was if Luis has helped out the Starfinder team with stuff in regards to the lore, especially considering SF2E is gonna be 100% compatible with PF2E. I also mentioned knowing they both have separate continuities, but wondered if there was still some collaboration there. Luis said yeah, he does. He, James Jacobs and Thurston Hillman (hi Thursty!), the three Creative Directors, get into weekly meetings with each other to discuss what each side in the Pathfinder rules, Pathfinder adventures, and Starfinder teams are all doing. The two games try not to do the same kinds of stories at the same time, like not wanting them to tell a Runelords story that's exactly like Return of the Runelords. Likewise, Starfinder probably won't be killing any of their gods right after War of Immortals comes out.
Although they try to keep the timelines separate, everyone still keeps in touch in order to make sure they aren't breaking each others' toys and keep at least some kind of connection between the two games. And there's an interest in crossover potential, too! So maybe there's a desire for things to line up, regardless. And we'll likely see some of these developments in the coming years!
And the final question is about whether frog-centric content is coming to PF2E! Luis mentions the Tripkee (new name of the Grippli) being in Player Core 2, and since they'll have a bit more space in PC2 compared to before, they'll be expanded a little bit.
Finally, Luis leaves us with this. He's teased enough about Divine Mysteries in today's stream, but he's sure to tease a little bit more during the Keynote at PaizoCon this coming weekend, and if you end up liking that tease, then you should show up during the Godsrain panel that same day so he can talk some more about what is in Divine Mysteries and show off some of the cool art in that book.

Picture this is your mind’s eye; Adrielle in a time long past without any technology. She arrives a work walking through a crowd of people. It is absolutely mayhem! Some in the crowd are carrying roses , some stuffed toys and some little trinkets but very few. Most have rotten tomatoes, blowhorns, buckets of water, soggy noodles and large microphones.
“It is not going to be a good day “ Adrielle thinks to herself. She walks slowly up to her boss, twirling her hair, eyes wide and empty. She is nearly completely desensitized but there is some hope left.
“Good Morning A big crowd out there today, sorry to say most seem pretty riled up” says her boss, Mr Rizz, a man in his 50’s short and plump, losing his hair but growing money off his favorite cash cow Adrielle. He continues
“Step up on the stage little Missy, you love the attention “ as he pats her head , his little money maker
She does not want to but she must. She did not study in college or get married nor did she learn a trade. She takes a deep breath looks around and walks up onto the stage.
The crowd is gathered, maybe 2000 in total. She has 10 minutes to perform and as agreed in her contract each of has an opportunity to give comments back to her performance; or simply react through noises or throwing odds and ends on stage. Some even give gifts. Only a very few however. The gifts are inexpensive but useless as well
She begins to tell a wild story!
“Today I was leaving my home and my life is in danger…
She cannot even finish. The crowd erupts in hatred! Blowing their horns, calling her a liar, throwing tomatoes, unbelievable hate; she has brought disgust on herself! You see, dear reader, the stage Mr Rizz, her boss , offers can be used for good or evil . She chose evil. She chose to lie, act the fool, insult the town and community members, defile the Church, to steal, to use her body in unsavory ways , the list goes on. She thought she was untouchable. After all SHE IS ON STAGE. SHE IS THE STAR! Much better than all those in the lowly crowd.
A few in the crowd timidly walk up and offer her trinkets, flowers and candy. These deluded individuals offer a few kind words
“You are so pretty , “I love your hair “ “Show me your makeup “ things of this nature but also the others have their mics and they each get a minute to tell her their thoughts. I will spare you the defiling words she must endure from the crowd. They ought not be repeated but remember she deserves each and every word!
Now reader it should be told, the crowd buys all the gifts from the owner of the stage, Mr Rizz. It should also be known the more times a day she steps on the stage the more she is paid. Mr Rizz also pays her on the size of the crowd. Bear this in mind please.
After an hour of being eaten alive by the crowd of disgusted people and a few very few, at her side nursing her wounds, she steps down off the stage; picking up her trinket gifts. Adrielle is covered in rotten tomatoes and some have even thrown buckets of cold water and wet noodles. She gets the latter treatment due to her incessant claims she is from Italy and more dominant than the newly settled Americans. She now resembles soggy spaghetti fit for the trash.
Adrielle walks back over to Mr Vagmem Rizz ,
With fake tears she asks him “how much did I earn today, I have these gifts and the crowd was so big and loud , it must be so so much “
Mr Rizz looks at her trinkets, which she can give back for cash and he resells “Ahhh you made $5, on all the gifts, and the townsfolk nearly all showed up today so you earned an extra $10”
She looks at her money. It is not enough to live. I will have to go begging again, sell my body, or get back on the stage, act the fool, speak vile lies and endure the hate , she thinks to herself. She has an idea!!!!!
She exclaims her dead eyes nearly smiling “ Mr Vegman Rizz? Could we not let the mean people in who hate me, please just keep them out. If they are out,there is more room for the people who give me gifts, the only reason more nice people do not come is because of all the big mean people. “
He gives her an evil grin “I am afraid not, dear lassy, do you know I sell them all the tomatoes, bullhorns and pasta?”
“The water they splash on you? I own the water company as well! Little Miss, All are having a jolly time here. They come ! Buy food and drink! After you go home and clean up, they stay! The town sits in my brothers pub and talks and drinks . Laugh at you until the wee hours of the morning!”he turns his back on her and with a hearty laugh his final words
“Tell the world a raccoon nearly killed your son, tell the town the raccoon has rabies and you have to move out of here, tell the town the raccoon tore his ear off and stole his hat, tell the town the raccoon is getting his family! The raccoon will return and kill you all! I will sell many trinket gifts!
Mr Rizz knows he will sell more gifts but more of every else as well!

I (32F) have a daughter (9 going on 10F) with my ex-husband (36M). We divorced when she was 3. He then remarried with one of his co-workers (let's call her Melissa). They also have a son together (6M).
My daughter's birthday is in 9 days. I reviewed with my daughter things for her birthday, like the theme, the cake... Here's the issue: when we were going through the guest list, she looked anxious. When I asked what's wrong, she told me that she did not want to invite Melissa. I asked her why and she explained to me that Melissa would make weird comments sometimes around other parents/ to her .
For example, when Melissa would pick her up from her dance lesson, she would hear Melissa say things like "That is why I prefer boys, girls only like pink and tutu", calling her a brat, and other things. She also told me that every time her brother (Melissa and ex-h's kid) would do something to annoy her (like breaking her toys, calling her names, starting a fight), Melissa would always defend her son and punish her every time and say "boys will be boys" or some crap like that .
I asked about her dad and she said that she does that when her dad is around, but he is always in his office so it is like a free pass. Later on, I called her father. He asked for the date of the party (her real birthday is a school day). I told him that his wife was not invited and I think I was in loudspeaker because I heard Melissa screaming at me saying that I "destroy her family"
So, AITA for not inviting my ex-husband's wife to my daughter's birthday party because she told me not to?
Okay, just for precision:

• My daughter's half-sibling is 4 years younger than her; she was born in April, while he was born in March the next year after the divorce (he just turned 6).
• BUT it is true that we divorced because my ex-husband told me he was in love with M and "wanted to confess."
• We have a 50/50 custody.
• He has a busy job.
• My daughter explained me she never told me/ her dad that she was scared of ruining her father's marriage because he seems happy

Update Post: April 8, 2024 (10 days later)
So, a lot happened. First of all, I met my ex for lunch alone. I explained everything that my daughter told me. At first, he was defensive and told me that she was overreacting. I replied that even if that were true, his relationship with his daughter is at risk. I gave him a choice: fix the problem or I go back to court for more custody.
Friday, when I came to pick my daughter up at his house, I talked to her in private, and she told me that her dad spent time with her, picking her up from school/activities, helping her with homework, and playing with her. Melissa then told me that she accepts not going to the party but still wanted to see my daughter blow out her candles on her actual birthday. She baked a cake and asked her (my dautghter) if she was okay with doing it before leaving. She seemed okay with it, so we gathered around the cake (my daughter, Melissa, ex, and half-brother). When my daughter blew out the candles, M junior decided that the good thing to do would be to smash my daughter's face into the cake....(To be honest, if this was not a kid, I would be in prison.) He and Melissa burst out laughing while my daughter was crying.
Melissa then told her that she was being dramatic and "emotional." We (Melissa, ex, and I) got into an argument, and to my surprise, my ex-husband was on my side, saying that it was not okay. While arguing, I noticed that my daughter was not there, so I left to check on her. I helped her clean herself, and then we left for my house. I tried to cheer her up, but she was still a little sad. The party went well, her dad came, and during the party, I told him that I want more custody because of his wife's bullying. So yeah, I will update you if anything happens.
Precision 2 :
Some of you asked questions about my daughter's reaction. My daughter is a really shy and silent kid. Except for me and her dad, she does not talk unless spoken to or if you bring up a subject that she likes. When something upsets her, she just stays silent and cries. It's always been like that and it is what she did. Started crying, went to her room.

Me: Really? Your wife is bullying our daughter. I've told you before, you did not keep the promise, so I'm going for more custody.

Does he recognize that Melissa is mistreating his daughter?
He apologized for their behavior and told me he would fix it. BUT he asked me not to fight for more custody
Update Post 2: April 19, 2024 (11 days from previous post)
Update 2: Hi! I saw that many of you asked for an update.
*My daughter: After the cake "incident," I asked her questions about whether M/half brother had ever laid hands on her, played such "pranks" on her, or behaved inappropriately (we never know). She told me no, explaining that the fights with her half-brother are mainly him annoying her. I also inquired if anyone else from both sides had made her uncomfortable in any way, and again, she said no. Since my last post, she has been seeing her psychiatrist twice a week. The bullying apparently started about two months ago. I don't know if it is related (although I am sure it is), but it was also around that time that Melissa had a miscarriage.
*Me: To be honest, I feel like a terrible mom. I did not see the signs. I am trying to fix everything.
*My ex-husband: GUESS WHO SHOWED UP AT MY DOOR AT 10 PM???? He called me last night, was outside, and said he wanted to talk. I let him in, and because I don't trust him (I really don't), I recorded the whole conversation (with his consent).
He told me that since the party, he's been thinking about what to do and yesterday told Melissa about my desire for more custody. From what he told me, she said that it was not such a bad idea because my daughter was not fitting into their family dynamic. They started to argue, and at one point, she just started cursing me and my daughter. Apparently, I am a sneaky B-word who is bitter about her affair with my ex-husband. She described my daughter as a spoiled, bratty princess who needs correction. And now, he has to choose between which woman he loves the most.
This is where he had the click! He left the house, drove around, and then showed up at my place. He is going to stay at a friend's house to think about his relationship with Melissa. Our daughter will stay with me during the week and visit him on the weekends. I told him that if he's going to get back together with Melissa, I am continuing with full custody. But if they divorce, it will depends of his custody for his son because I don't want him around my daughter. He agreed.

*My ex-h : Earlier in the week, he asked if he could come by,saying that he had something important to tell me. He told me that last friday Melissa junior got into trouble at school for cursing at a girl.
Long story short : he confessed his fellings to a girl (the niece of the director), she rejected him. Apparently, he started shouting insults at her that no 6-year-old should know, let alone say. Because of this incident and our daughter's situation he decided to divorce Melissa. She would be served the divorce papers next week. He is also going to pay Melissa in therapy because he still wants her to have a relationship with their son.
We (ex-h,daughter,me) will also be attending family therapy together.
*My daughter : She is happier now, and that's the only thing that matters to me. For the summer I am going to take her to Japan to see my side of the family !
Brooke, if one day you read this, mama loves you more than anything. I am sorry for seeing everything earlier. I love you!!!!!!!

1. I am still going for full custody of my daughter with visitation the week-end. If and only IF Melissa junior's behaviour improves, I will let him and my daughter interact.
2. He (my ex) is going for full custody of his son.
3. I still don't trust my ex-h. I am keeping my eyes on him, and how he will raise my daughter. I don't know why people would assume that I am going to nice with him. Am I polite? Yes. Nice? No.
4. I am not going for more custody because he wants his son. Because he recently got a promotion so works more. He doesn't have the time to take care of our daughter on the week days so I take her.
5. Someone asked me our races (for some reason??). I am Japanese, like my ex-h, and Melissa is white (French).
6. Like I said I am Japanese but was raised in France so French is my first language, than Japanese, than English (sorry for any mistakes)

To me this is the only theory that accounts for all the crazy things that have gone down on both sides throughout this case:
KR is hammered drunk when she drops JO (fact). In her drunkenness she accidentally runs JO over, killing him. She’s so drunk she doesn’t even notice, drives home, and goes to sleep.
At some point before the famous “hos long to die in cold search,” someone coming in/out of the Albert house sees the body, and goes and alerts the others. They freak out and start trying to revive him. They bring his body inside at carry it down to the basement at one point, and try to see if they can revive him (during this chaos is also when the dog could have chewed on his arm, idk). Nothing works, but no one calls the cops or an ambulance because the family still has no idea what happened, and if any of their loved ones could be at fault.
Realizing he is dead and not coming back, they turn their full attention to trying to figure out what happened. Everyone in the house is dumbfounded, and also keep in mind, they’re all drunk, so it’s chaos. There are moments where Brian Albert shouts at Colin and BH, demanding to know if either of them got in some sort of fight outside with JO without anyone noticing, hurt him (accidentally or not), and just aren’t admitting to it out of fear.
They genuinely have no idea what happened to JO, all they know is they have a beat up dead body on their property, and a big family to protect. Eventually, on account of the broken taillight glass, they figure that someone must have run him over. Who ran him over? Was it on purpose or by accident? They form theories and get in a big classic family shouting/finger pointing match, but in the end they genuinely have no idea and aren’t able to reach any conclusions—because no one ever actually say KR drop him off—but they’re running out of time.
At one point someone in the house suggests that the only scenario they can think of that makes sense is that he was probably the victim of a hit and run by a car or plow while walking up the road to the house (”maybe Karen and him were fighting on the ride over, so she dropped him off at a point sooner than the actual driveway out of pettiness, in/near the road”). After being hit by a car, they figure JO then tried to make it to their front door to get help, but collapsed due to his injuries/internal bleeding sustained during the hit-and-run before he could reach the door. Then after collapsing, either succumbed to his injuries or froze to death because of the cold. At this point, right around 2:27am, they naturally then wonder how long it would even take someone to die in the cold, if that is how he ultimately died—this is the moment that JM makes her famous “hos long” search.
The father Brian realizes that at their current rate, there’s no way they are going to pin down exactly what happened to JO by sunrise. He also realizes that while he’s not sure, there’s at least a possibility that someone in his house—maybe even one if his kids, or at least a beloved friend or other family member—is responsible for what happened in some way he is unaware of currently and won’t find out for awhile. Even if no one in the house is responsible, he knows they could still be viewed as responsible by authorities once there is an inevitable investigation.
Drunk and in panic mode, and worried about all the different ways that JO’s body could be interpreted/misinterpreted authorities in ways that jeopardize his family, the family conspires to do all that they can to limit the ways that the scene before them could be misinterpreted. No one in the family has any qualms about this because after all, they didn’t do anything wrong, they just don’t want to scene to have any possibility of appearing like they did anything wrong. Furthermore, because they are themselves law enforcement and have all the right connections, their egos tell them that they have what it takes to pull off such a conspiracy, and a harmless conspiracy at that. Ironically, this false belief of Brian Albert that, through some light manipulation and due to his experience as a cop, he can do a few small things to create an extra layer of protection for his family, is exactly what has backfired is now currently destroying his family…
I mentioned it before, but here is the KEY DETAIL/ASSUMPTION that this theory is truly built upon: the family, drunk and in panic mode, and attempting confirm whether JO is truly dead and not coming back (and if someone in the house is responsible, CLUE style), carry his body from the road/driveway into their house (out of public view) and down into the basement. Inevitably, blood gets everywhere, all over their basement floor. This is the critical element that creates the panic that makes them feel that conspiring to limit their family risk is truly the best option.
First of all, I don’t know if you dog-owners have ever had a cut on your foot or ankle, but in some random moments in life where I’ve gotten a cut and not even noticed it, my dog almost always finds it first and starts licking it like the little carnivore madman he is… I’m sure you already know what I’m getting at… In all the shouting and screaming and chaos, the Alberts rile up their dog and fail to take their dog into account as they panic-move the bloody body to the basement. In all the commotion, the dog gets extremely excited/overwhelmed, and its primal instinct kicks in and views JOs body as some sort of “Fresh kill from the family hunt.” At one point the dog spazzes out and starts licking the blood a bit and even chomps on JOs lifeless arm like a chew toy. If this sounds far-fetched, you must not be a dog owner, because excited dogs are capable of doing all kinds of wacky actions when they’re in weird and excitable moods, and it only takes a split second.
Anyway, back to what they decide to do. Brian Albert eventually realizes how insanely stupid of a mistake it was to bring JOs body inside their home and into the basement in their panicked/drunken attempt to get him out of the cold and indoors to see if they could revive him/see if he is still alive. They now know JO is truly dead, and now their basement is covered in his blood. Brian panics and realizes how authorities could interpret the blood in the basement in a million not-a-hit-and-run ways—especially because it will look incredibly bad/suspicious that they found the body and did not immediately call police or an ambulance. So, he takes the reigns and tells his family everything they are going to do from here to make everything look as good as possible for them…
First, they need to move the body back outside and into the snow so, at the very least, it goes back to looking like something that happened outside and outside only, thus minimizing the “fight in the basement” look of it and maximizing the “hit by a car” (which is actually what happened) look of it. He also realizes how bad it looks that none of them have contacted authorities about the body as they’ve been panicking trying to make sense of what happened / get on the same page out of their own self-interest, so Brian Albert also instructs everyone (or whoever is still at the house at this point, because by now they’ve started creating their timelines of coming/going and sending various ppl—Colin, etc.—home to protect them) that once they’ve brought the body outside, they are all going to act as if no one ever saw the body.
Also, by now they’ve all realized that it is 95% likely that it was KR who ran JO over when she was shitfaced. This is when they decide to have Jen McCabe go over in the AM to have her “help” KR find the body. They want KR to be the first person to appear to find the body, realize what she’s done, and then this will be the simplest/cleanest scenario. Why? Because if they decide to have it play out that someone at the Albert’s finds the body, it’s going to become impossibly complicated for all of them maintain the same story/timelines etc. of everything that transpired before/after that moment (exs. all of them telling each other one by one, chains of texts, calls, etc. telling various people, mini interactions of made up conversations that they would have to invent and keep track of, all of them “waking up” and alerting their families, and all the while trusting their acting skills in their current drunken/exhausted/emotional state, etc.). So, they make a calculated risk that they could sell the “we never noticed the body” story, and it would be a betteeasier story for them, and it’s of course the story they’re still sticking with now as they’ve taken the stand.
However, we know now, the “let’s just all act like we never found the body and have Karen ‘find it’ in the AM” strategy has backfired horribly, because they have failed to sell several parts of their testimonies/timelines (ex. J Nagel’s ”black blob,” line, etc) relating to several of them somehow driving/walking right past the body of grown man in the snow and not noticing it.
Anyway, this theory of mine is the only one I can think of that accounts for all the evidence, as well as everyone’s behavior throughout the trial. I think everyone has gotten too caught up in the false dichotomy of:

1. JO never made it inside the house + Karen ran JO over with the car and killed him
2. JO made it into the house, where someone or multiple people at the house (and dog) beat JO to death + now the McAlberts are bending over backwards to keep their stories straight.

To me it’s an obvious combination of the two, just leaving out the vicious basement beating part
No one beat JO to death. KR accidentally ran him over while driving slowly, but then the car dragged him as she drove (extremely common in hit and runs), and in a manner that produced his specific head injuries, killing him. She had no idea she was dragging his body for many yards. Someone coming in/out of the Albert’s find his body with zero context, launching the family into a frenzy as they try to figure out what happened and what to do about it to minimize the likelihood of their getting in trouble—they drunkenly decided to play God with their inflated townie egos—a product of their combined law enforcement experience, political connections, and blood-alcohol levels, when they should have just immediately called the cops.
The events unfold as described above, and, critically, they make the wrong decision to create their own McAlbert-family story of how it went down when they become afraid that their now bloody basement could make it look like they murdered him—especially the bad optics of the crowd given that (a) Colin is a meathead with a history of playing tough-guy as a teenager and (b) Brian Higgins allegedly/maybe had some sort of thing going on with KR.
This theory would explain all of the following:

• The “hos long to die in cold” search from inside the house before KR “found” the body, as the family panicked trying to figure out the various WTFs of the situation, and options for alibis.
• All the physical evidence related to the broken tail light, the hair, JO being found with the broken cocktail glass because he never made it inside, etc.
• Why the Alberts got rid of the dog and tore up their entire basement right after JOs death, because they wanted to make sure that no traces of JO—his blood, specifically—would be found inside the house.
• The version of KRs words to the first responders where she actually confesses “I hit him I him him”—because she did.
• Why Proctor was so brazen in saying he hoped KR killed herself & looked for her nudes and bragged about it, because he talked to the McAlberts throughout the investigation, who made him feel confident that she was in fact, a cop killer. And was especially upset at all the risks the McAlberts felt they needed to take to protect themselves from accusations as a result of her drunken actions.
• Why JOs shoe etc. was found so far away—his body was dragged by KR’s car and/or one of the Albert’s strewn his stuff about intentionally to make it look even more convincingly that the accident was initiated away from house, not on the property.
• Why the texts and timelines of Colin being driven home by Allie are all so fishy, because they were obviously fabricated to appear as if the texts/the care ride were happening under normal circumstances, not “what do we do about this body and all this blood?” and “Colin, have Allie come get you now, you don’t need to be here—me and Brian H know what we’re doing, we will handle the body + it will look suspicious if you’re here any longer” type circumstances.
• Why all the unbelievable testimonies from the McAlberts having to do with them somehow not noticing the body in those situations where it was like, right in front of them, are indeed lies and bullshit. Of course they all knew it was there, but they all agreed to pretend like they never saw it to make their story work.
• All the various instances of Albert’s deleting their texts/calls, getting rid of their phones, deleting their Ring cameras videos, etc.—bc these texts and calls and videos of course contained mountains of evidence showing how they all conspired with each other out of fear and ego instead of calling the police right away, and of course destroy all versions of their made up timelines.
• Why the McAlberts have all stayed strong, stuck to their stories, and not cracked under pressure (yet)… because they feel entitled to what they view are “white lies” because, after all KR is still the one who did it, and they’re not the bad ones.

In the end, upon finding JO’s body, The McAlberts tried to doctor some details and alter some timelines to make the whole case that much cleaner and give themselves some extra protection from scrutiny, the law, and (probably most importantly to them) to protect their precious reputations in Canton as powerful townies.
Of course, it is a rich irony that the very thing they were trying to prevent—people think that some of their family beat JO to death—is now exactly the theory that most of public is now leaning towards, now that they have taken the stand and all their suspect testimony, self-contradictions, and inexplicable behavior are on full display. Even more ironically, not only have they trashed their own reputations, they (along with Turtle Boy & co.) have inadvertently turned Karen into a cult hero—a small but brave woman stoically taking on not just lies and false accusation of her boyfriend’s murder, but the corruption of the Boston Police department at large.
And, on a more meta level, I think this theory also explains why KR carries herself the way she does. She knows she hit JO, and she feels terrible deep down, but at the same time, she’s always disliked the McAlberts and how special and untouchable they’ve always acted—big, corrupt fish in a small Canton pond. So, she finds comfort in knowing that even thought they didn’t kill JO, some bad people are still being exposed for the entitled liars and townie dumdums that they are. She also knows that she’s not really at any risk of being convicted at this point (unless the jury actually shocks the world), and she’s enjoying the spotlight and cult hero status that people like Turtle Boy have created for her.

A common claim in HP fandom is that Harry doesn’t appreciate Hermione enough. A weirder assertion I sometimes see is that Ron compliments or appreciates Hermione more than Harry.
Admittedly, Hermione does a lot for Harry throughout the books, and he doesn’t always express his thoughts directly to her. Nevertheless, there are many passages where Harry directly compliments Hermione (often using words of very high praise), as well as quite a few where he expresses his admiration of her to other people.
This essay will explore those complimentary passages from the books. I won’t include simple expressions of gratitude (though those exist too between Harry and Hermione), nor will I recount here the many passages where Harry merely thinks highly of Hermione or appreciates her without saying anything aloud. Frankly, that would make this essay much too long, and I want to focus on real compliments and praise.
After we’ve explored how Harry compliments Hermione along with her reactions, we’ll take a look at how Ron tends to praise Hermione, as well as the different way she reacts to both boys. Not surprisingly to most readers here, we’ll see that Harry is the boy Hermione truly loves praise from. Unfortunately in Ron’s case, his compliments almost never land well (if they land at all).
I’m going to keep the commentary shorter here on many passages, as this is primarily intended to be a list to demonstrate just how much Harry appreciates Hermione and thinks highly of her. Nevertheless, we’ll see a number of patterns emerge as we go through.

Harry’s direct compliments

Let’s begin with one of the most well-known interactions in the early books between Harry and Hermione (PS16):

Hermione’s lip trembled and she suddenly dashed at Harry and threw her arms around him.
‘Hermione!’
‘Harry – you’re a great wizard, you know.’
‘I’m not as good as you,’ said Harry, very embarrassed, as she let go of him.
‘Me!’ said Hermione. ‘Books! And cleverness! There are more important things – friendship and bravery and – oh Harry – be careful!’

There’s not much new to say about this passage—Harry is about to go on alone, putting himself in great danger. Hermione’s lip trembles in emotion, and she embraces Harry for the first time in the books, praising him as a “great wizard.” And yet, Harry claims he’s simply not as good as Hermione.
Still, the two of them go back and forth about it in a cute way, as Hermione then says “Me!” and proceeds to implicitly compliment Harry’s friendship and bravery further.
I mention this latter detail of the back-and-forth because it gets mirrored four years later, except this time with Harry being the one to say, “Me?” See OotP15:

‘Harry, you’re the best in the year at Defence Against the Dark Arts,’ said Hermione.
‘Me?’ said Harry, now grinning more broadly than ever. ‘No I’m not, you’ve beaten me in every test –’
‘Actually, I haven’t,’ said Hermione coolly. ‘You beat me in our third year – the only year we both sat the test and had a teacher who actually knew the subject. But I’m not talking about test results, Harry. Think what you’ve done!’

We know of Harry’s prowess at DADA. Can anyone forget the insanely powerful Patronus Harry conjured at the end of PoA, which Hermione noted was “very, very advanced magic”? It’s again cute that they get into a disagreement, both modestly trying to one-up the praise of the other here while claiming they themselves aren’t the best.
But I already skipped over another moment a few chapters earlier in OotP9:

[Ron] dashed from the room, leaving Harry and Hermione alone.
For some reason, Harry found he did not want to look at Hermione. He turned to his bed, picked up the pile of clean robes Mrs Weasley had laid on it and crossed the room to his trunk.
‘Harry?’ said Hermione tentatively.
‘Well done, Hermione,’ said Harry, so heartily it did not sound like his voice at all, and, still not looking at her, ‘brilliant. Prefect. Great.’
‘Thanks,’ said Hermione. ‘Erm – Harry – could I borrow Hedwig so I can tell Mum and Dad? They’ll be really pleased – I mean prefect is something they can understand.’

The circumstances are complicated here, because Harry’s feeling really conflicted about not getting a prefect’s badge. He doesn’t want to look at Hermione, because I think he feels like she’d be disappointed in him, as she was so enthusiastic about the idea of being prefect with him a few minutes before. I analyzed this whole section in greater depth in another essay, so I won’t get into all of that here.
For the present, let’s just note that Harry is feeling very emotional and is about to launch himself into one of the longest internal monologues in the books, feeling quite down about himself. Yet he still finds the strength to tell Hermione how “brilliant” he thinks she is. Even if he’s hurting and can’t even look at her, he wants her to know he’s proud of her.
This isn’t the only place where Harry spontaneously feels the need to give Hermione compliments even under less-than-ideal circumstances. He seems to place great importance in ensuring that Hermione knows how highly he thinks of her. We particularly see this later in the series. In HBP25, Hermione basically accuses Harry of being mildly sexist because he refuses to take her theory seriously that the “Prince” (the former owner of the potions book) might have been a woman:

‘Listen, Hermione, I can tell it’s not a girl. I can just tell.’
‘The truth is that you don’t think a girl would have been clever enough,’ said Hermione angrily.
‘How can I have hung round with you for five years and not think girls are clever?’ said Harry, stung by this.

Harry’s “stung” that Hermione would think of him as sexist, but he’s specifically disappointed because he knows how brilliant and clever Hermione is. He thinks she’s amazing and incredible and the best in his year at school. I wonder if this passage leads Harry to reflect a bit on how he may not always voice his opinion to Hermione enough, as there’s a marked change in DH, where Harry more frequently tells Hermione directly how highly he thinks of her.
For example, in DH9, in the scene after the trio was attacked by Dolohov and Rowle, Harry calls her “brilliant” for casting a memory charm:

She took a deep, calming breath, then pointed her wand at Dolohov’s forehead and said, ‘Obliviate.’
At once, Dolohov’s eyes became unfocused and dreamy.
‘Brilliant!’ said Harry, clapping her on the back. ‘Take care of the other one and the waitress while Ron and I clear up.’

Later, after Harry and Hermione escape Nagini’s attack at Bathilda Bagshot’s house, Harry calls her “incredible” (DH18):

‘You’re still really angry at me, aren’t you?’ said Hermione; he looked up to see fresh tears leaking out of her eyes, and knew that his anger must have shown in his face.
‘No,’ he said quietly. ‘No, Hermione, I know it was an accident. You were trying to get us out of there alive, and you were incredible. I’d be dead if you hadn’t been there to help me.’
He tried to return her watery smile, then turned his attention to the book.

As in the OotP passage where Harry is feeling depressed about the prefect’s badge, here Harry isn’t really ready to talk. His wand is broken, he was injured by Nagini, and he spent the night having visions of Voldemort killing his parents. It’s not at all an exaggeration to say this is probably the most dire part of Harry’s journey in the books. And yet he still values Hermione enough not only to agree to talk when he’s not ready, but also to immediately forgive her and call her “incredible” for her quick thinking the previous night.
Moreover, we can see how much this means to Hermione at that moment, as she smiles in gratitude at Harry, in contrast to her tear-streaked face.
Later in DH, after Hermione was tortured at Malfoy Manor, we again see Harry expressing his understanding and gratitude for Hermione when he first talks to her (DH24):

Harry had walked up several steps before stopping and looking back.
‘I need you two, as well!’ he called to Ron and Hermione, who had been skulking, half-concealed, in the doorway of the sitting room.
They both moved into the light, looking oddly relieved.
‘How are you?’ Harry asked Hermione. ‘You were amazing – coming up with that story when she was hurting you like that –’
Hermione gave a weak smile as Ron gave her a one-armed squeeze.

Harry calls her “amazing,” and once again Hermione smiles in reply. I should also pause here to note that these superlatives aren’t common for Harry. In fact, they’re unique to Hermione. Harry doesn’t call anyone else “amazing” or “incredible” anywhere in the books.
And these are far from the only times Hermione’s quick thinking saves the day. A few months earlier, she once again apparated Harry (and Ron too) away in mid-air to escape Luna’s father’s house, coming up with a detailed plan in a matter of seconds to hide Ron while exposing Harry during the escape (for strategic reasons). Harry then agrees Hermione is a genius and tells her doesn’t know what they’d do without her (DH22):

‘You’re a genius,’ Ron repeated, looking awed.
‘Yeah, you are, Hermione,’ agreed Harry fervently, ‘I don’t know what we’d do without you.’
She beamed, but became solemn at once.

I’d note another detail here. Ron does compliment Hermione too in this passage, calling her a “genius” multiple times. Yet it’s only once Harry finally tells her how much she means to him that Hermione “beams” in reply. (In a previous essay, I examined how frequently Hermione “beams” at Harry, much more than anyone else.)
This is a pattern we see repeatedly in the books, where Ron’s praise is ignored in favor of Harry’s. Perhaps the clearest example is in HBP9:

[Slughorn:] ‘Oho! “One of my best friends is Muggle-born and she’s the best in our year!” I’m assuming this is the very friend of whom you spoke, Harry?’
‘Yes, sir,’ said Harry.
‘Well, well, take twenty well-earned points for Gryffindor, Miss Granger,’ said Slughorn genially.
Malfoy looked rather as he had done the time Hermione had punched him in the face. Hermione turned to Harry with a radiant expression and whispered, ‘Did you really tell him I’m the best in the year? Oh, Harry!’
‘Well, what’s so impressive about that?’ whispered Ron, who for some reason looked annoyed. ‘You are the best in the year – I’d’ve told him so if he’d asked me!’
Hermione smiled but made a ‘shush’ing gesture, so that they could hear what Slughorn was saying. Ron looked slightly disgruntled.

Harry had already praised Hermione to Slughorn privately (a fact we’ll come back to), but hearing this praise from Harry causes Hermione to turn toward Harry with a “radiant expression,” overwhelmed with joy at the idea that Harry thought of her as the “best in the year.” (The word choice of “radiant” here is rather special for JKR, as I’ve noted in a previous essay.)
Meanwhile, poor Ron is off to the side, looking “slightly disgruntled” when Hermione shushes him in class for a similar remark.

Ron’s compliments to Hermione

Unfortunately for Ron, Hermione’s reaction in the Slughorn scene is typical. We’ve seen Hermione repeatedly smiling and looking radiant at Harry’s compliments, as well as reacting by praising him in return. Ron, on the other hand, is almost exclusively met with tepid if not outright negative reactions from Hermione even when he says nice things about her.
I drew on a list of Ron compliments created by Ron/Hermione shippers here, but the original list only gave Ron’s lines, without Hermione’s reactions, which I’ve restored below. (The reason for the omission of Hermione’s responses will soon become clear.)
Ron first shows genuine admiration for Hermione back in PoA15 when she slaps Draco and then storms out of Divination. However, the first time Ron actually tries to express this appreciation verbally probably happens in OotP12:

[Hermione:] ‘About You-Know-Who. He said his “gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust –”’
‘How do you remember stuff like that?’ asked Ron, looking at her in admiration.
‘I listen, Ron,’ said Hermione, with a touch of asperity.
‘So do I, but I still couldn’t tell you exactly what –’
‘The point,’ Hermione pressed on loudly, ‘is that this sort of thing is exactly what Dumbledore was talking about. You-Know-Who’s only been back two months and we’ve already started fighting among ourselves. And the Sorting Hat’s warning was the same: stand together, be united –’

Although this isn’t a direct compliment, we’re told that Ron is actually looking at Hermione “in admiration.” Unlike his more typical annoyance with her, he’s actually impressed here by her memory. And yet Hermione responds with “asperity,” harshly putting him down for not listening better. When Ron gets defensive and tries to react, Hermione “loudly” talks over him and essentially ignores Ron completely.
This is far from the only time Hermione will ignore Ron’s occasional kind words, because she clearly knows it’s unusual behavior. She tells us this directly (OotP14):

‘OK, write that down,’ Hermione said to Ron, pushing his essay and a sheet covered in her own writing back to Ron, ‘then add this conclusion I’ve written for you.’
‘Hermione, you are honestly the most wonderful person I’ve ever met,’ said Ron weakly, ‘and if I’m ever rude to you again –’
‘– I’ll know you’re back to normal,’ said Hermione.

Ron was trying to thank her for help with his homework, but Hermione recognizes this praise as obviously transactional. She has noticed he’s only nice to her when she does things for him, but otherwise his “normal” behavior toward her is a bit rude. (As a sidenote: we’ve already seen Harry repeatedly refer to Hermione as “brilliant.” Ron, in contrast, does call Hermione sort of “brilliant” twice, both times sarcastically referring to theories or ideas he thinks are ridiculous. See CoS13, DH25.)
Ron’s attempts at recognizing Hermione’s achievements also look very different from Harry’s. In HBP5, when Hermione is worrying about her O.W.L. exam performance, Ron does acknowledge Hermione’s academic performance a couple times, in passages that Ron/Hermione fans will point to as evidence of his supposed admiration.
Yet they don’t come off as compliments. They are aggressive and exasperated and almost making fun of Hermione at the end. And look how Hermione reacts:

‘Hermione, will you shut up, you’re not the only one who’s nervous!’ barked Ron. ‘And when you’ve got your ten “Outstanding” O.W.L.s ...’
‘Don’t, don’t, don’t!’ said Hermione, flapping her hands hysterically. ‘I know I’ve failed everything!’
[…]
‘I – not bad,’ said Hermione in a small voice.
‘Oh, come off it,’ said Ron, striding over to her and whipping her results out of her hand. ‘Yep – nine “Outstandings” and one “Exceeds Expectations” in Defence Against the Dark Arts.’ He looked down at her, half-amused, half-exasperated. ‘You’re actually disappointed, aren’t you?’
Hermione shook her head, but Harry laughed.

So yes, Ron acknowledges her achievements here, but he does so in the process of telling her to “shut up,” barking at her, and then becoming “exasperated” at her personal goals. I think we can all take a step back and acknowledge that Hermione is a fairly extreme perfectionist, and her level of anxiety at potentially “failing everything” comes across as weird and a bit irrational. Still, rather than helping her “calm down” (as many Ron/Hermione fans would say Ron does), Ron exacerbates Hermione’s level of disquiet, causing her to become “hysterical” and then later embarrassed, reacting in a “small voice.”
Harry would have just clapped her on the back and called her “brilliant” or something, to which she’d probably smile in reply. Harry doesn’t share Hermione’s level of academic dedication, but he still appreciates it, rather than trying to shame Hermione for being an overachiever. Yet Ron manages to make her uncomfortable in several different ways in this scene, even as he recognizes how well she would do.
And we’ve only started on the types of negative reactions Hermione has to Ron’s attempts at recognizing her achievements. In HBP21 after apparition practice in Hogsmeade, Ron cuts in to call her performance “perfect”:

‘Good one,’ said Harry. ‘How’d you do, Hermione?’
‘Oh, she was perfect, obviously,’ said Ron, before Hermione could answer. ‘Perfect deliberation, divination and desperation, or whatever the hell it is – we all went for a quick drink in the Three Broomsticks after and you should’ve heard Twycross going on about her – I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t pop the question soon –’
‘And what about you?’ asked Hermione, ignoring Ron.

Ron’s praise is undermined with the dismissive “whatever the hell it is,” once again making it clear that he doesn’t value Hermione’s attention to detail and high standards. Hermione’s response is, reasonably, then to simply ignore Ron.
Admittedly, Ron appears to realize some of his failings and makes an attempt in Deathly Hallows, reading the Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches book and trying to learn how to compliment a girl. It unfortunately doesn’t go quite smoothly for Ron at first (DH7):

Hermione made purple and gold streamers erupt from the end of her wand and drape themselves artistically over the trees and bushes.
‘Nice,’ said Ron, as with one final flourish of her wand, Hermione turned the leaves on the crab-apple tree to gold. ‘You’ve really got an eye for that sort of thing.’
‘Thank you, Ron!’ said Hermione, looking both pleased and a little confused. Harry turned away, smiling to himself. He had a funny notion that he would find a chapter on compliments when he found time to peruse his copy of Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches […].

Ron arguably is trying here, but as we know from OotP, Hermione knows Ron’s more typical reaction toward her is rudeness. Hence we see her a “little confused” yet still somewhat pleased.
This kind of dual reaction from Hermione is usually the best Ron can hope for. Unlike Hermione’s instant smiles and happiness from Harry’s compliments, she views Ron with suspicion. Hermione always appears to keep in mind that Ron’s pleasant reactions are atypical and thus not to be trusted. We see this again as Hermione enters before Bill and Fleur’s wedding, wearing a lovely dress (DH8):

‘[…] wow,’ [Ron] added, blinking rather rapidly as Hermione came hurrying towards them. ‘You look great!’
‘Always the tone of surprise,’ said Hermione, though she smiled.

Note the “though she smiled” qualification here, which is pointing out that Hermione’s reaction is not exactly positive and arguably unkind. Hermione is here making a reference to an earlier conversation after the Seven Potters. When Tonks mentioned how “great” Ron was stunning a Death Eater, Hermione reacted positively with “you did?” Hermione was sincerely proud of Ron at that moment, hugging him, and yet Ron reacted with the phrase “Always the tone of surprise,” rejecting her and breaking off from her embrace.
Admittedly, Ron was a bit right in that scene to acknowledge that Hermione almost never recognizes his achievements. Yet in the wedding scene, we see Hermione throw that verbal dig back at Ron, effectively taking what appears to be a more sincere compliment from Ron and undermining it. She’s telling him (and the reader) that he doesn’t generally find her attractive and wouldn’t typically say such a nice thing to her.
In effect, she’s somewhat begrudgingly smiling while taking a swipe at Ron’s more typical behavior.
There’s really only one time in all of the books that I have found where Hermione actually reacts positively (without qualification) to Ron’s praise. That occurs in DH9 after she reveals how she had packed so much in her beaded bag in preparation for the Horcrux hunt and emergencies:

‘I told you at The Burrow, I’ve had the essentials packed for days, you know, in case we needed to make a quick getaway. I packed your rucksack this morning, Harry, after you changed, and put it in here ... I just had a feeling …’
‘You’re amazing, you are,’ said Ron, handing her his bundled-up robes.
‘Thank you,’ said Hermione, managing a small smile as she pushed the robes into the bag. ‘Please, Harry, get that Cloak on!’

We see her here at least giving Ron a “small smile,” though she quickly turns to Harry, more concerned again about him. Still, it’s a legitimate positive reaction to a compliment from Ron. We shouldn’t have to pause and reflect on that so much, except for the fact that this is a rather unique occurrence. Every other time Ron says something nice about Hermione, she ignores it, gets annoyed, dismisses it, gets suspicious or confused, or has some other negative reaction like we saw.
And even this one pleasant moment between Ron and Hermione is immediately undermined a few pages later:

Ron struggled for a moment before managing to extract his wand from his pocket.
‘It’s no wonder I can’t get it out, Hermione, you packed my old jeans, they’re tight.’
‘Oh, I’m so sorry,’ hissed Hermione, and as she dragged the waitress out of sight of the windows Harry heard her mutter a suggestion as to where Ron could stick his wand instead.

Yes, Ron was happy for a moment and praised Hermione for packing his stuff, but it turns out she did it wrong in Ron’s eyes. She packed the wrong jeans, and Hermione reacts very negatively, telling Ron to shove his wand up his arse. Hermione here must feel like Ron is conforming to the behavior she described back in OotP—he’s only nice until he turns back to his “normal” negative behavior toward her.

Harry complimenting Hermione to other people

We don’t really have space here to investigate the many other times Harry thinks highly of Hermione, is grateful for her, or appreciates some aspect of her in his internal thoughts. But it’s perhaps useful to end this exploration by noting how many other times Harry still manages to praise Hermione verbally, unprompted, to other people.
We can start with the scene that inspired Slughorn in the quotation discussed above, where Ron was disgruntled at Hermione’s ecstatic reaction to Harry’s compliment. See HBP4:

[Slughorn:] ‘Your mother was Muggle-born, of course. Couldn’t believe it when I found out. Thought she must have been pure-blood, she was so good.’
‘One of my best friends is Muggle-born,’ said Harry, ‘and she’s the best in our year.’

Note that there’s really no good reason for Harry to praise Hermione so specifically and highly here. Slughorn was discussing Lily, and Harry could have simply countered with the fact that he had talented Muggle-born friends too. Yet he singles out Hermione to compare to his mother’s talent and goes further—calling her the best student in his year.
Ron never has a comparable passage in the books. Many of his compliments or nice moments are very situational with Hermione, not spontaneous praise. This is probably one reason why Hermione also shushes Ron when he tries to echo Harry later with Slughorn: she knows if Harry said something, he meant it and wasn’t just trying to flatter her or be nice because of the situation.
The best Ron can manage on a couple occasions are vague acknowledgments to Harry about Hermione. Such as CoS14:

“What does she understand?” said Harry distractedly, still looking around, trying to tell where the voice had come from.
“Loads more than I do,” said Ron, shaking his head.

Not exactly a compliment, but this one makes lists of Ron’s compliments sometimes, just because it’s so rare for Ron to say something even this nice about Hermione. Even when Ron is clearly impressed by Hermione slapping Draco and then storming out of Trelawney’s class in PoA15, the most he can manage to say to Harry is:

‘Some day Hermione’s having, eh?’ Ron muttered to Harry, looking awed.

We’re told that Ron’s “looking awed” here, but he still can barely say anything directly praiseworthy about her.
Meanwhile, Harry simply cannot stop himself from saying how amazing Hermione is. As far back as CoS2:

‘Harry Potter asks if he can help Dobby ... Dobby has heard of your greatness, sir, but of your goodness, Dobby never knew ...’
Harry, who was feeling distinctly hot in the face, said, ‘Whatever you’ve heard about my greatness is a load of rubbish. I’m not even top of my year at Hogwarts, that’s Hermione, she –’
But he stopped quickly, because thinking about Hermione was painful.

Remember when we saw that Hermione tried to compliment Harry and tell him he was a great wizard in PS or the best in DADA in OotP? Harry couldn’t help deferring to Hermione, trying to praise her as better. The same thing happens when Dobby speaks of Harry’s “greatness” here—and Harry immediately thinks of the greatest person he knows: Hermione Granger.
Harry can’t even let the Quidditch team think he was smart enough to come up with the Impervius Charm for his glasses (originally during the Quidditch match back in PoA9). When Angelina proposes using the spell again in OotP18, Harry simply has to give Hermione credit:

[Angelina:] ‘[…] Harry, didn’t you do something to your glasses to stop the rain fogging them up when we played Hufflepuff in that storm?’
‘Hermione did it,’ said Harry. He pulled out his wand, tapped his glasses and said, ‘Impervius!’

It’s not exactly a compliment, but it just shows yet again how much he wants everyone to know how amazing Hermione is.
This reflex Harry has to praise Hermione comes up in the strangest places, getting him into arguments with his love interests. When Cho brings up the jinx that resulted in Marietta’s outbreak of pimples, Harry can’t help contradicting her (OotP28):

‘That was a really horrible trick of Hermione Granger’s,’ said Cho fiercely. ‘She should have told us she’d jinxed that list –’
‘I think it was a brilliant idea,’ said Harry coldly. Cho flushed and her eyes grew brighter.
‘Oh yes, I forgot – of course, if it was darling Hermione’s idea –’

Cho is actually quite insightful about the role of Hermione in Harry’s life here. She earlier got jealous when Harry prioritized Hermione on Valentine’s Day, and now she gets annoyed at how “brilliant” Harry considered “darling Hermione’s idea.”
Just as in Quidditch with his glasses, Harry can’t help acknowledging Hermione’s brilliance, even with another girl he likes. He could have been a little more diplomatic with Cho in disagreeing with her, but instead his reflex is to defend Hermione.
Perhaps the most absurd moment of praise for Hermione randomly comes up as Harry’s breaking up with Ginny (HBP30):

‘I never really gave up on you,’ [Ginny] said. ‘Not really. I always hoped ... Hermione told me to get on with life, maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember? And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more – myself.’
‘Smart girl, that Hermione,’ said Harry, trying to smile.

Think about what’s going on in this moment. Ginny just admitted how strong her feelings for Harry are, that she “never really gave up” on him, from when she was a young girl. She’s effectively trying to inform him of her commitment, of his status as her first love. If Harry had deep feelings for Ginny, we might expect him at this point to recognize how long Ginny had cared, how much she had tried to learn to be “herself” around him, to get him to notice her.
And instead the first words from Harry’s lips are to acknowledge how smart Hermione is. He’s breaking up with his girlfriend… and praising another girl’s intelligence? I know Harry can be rather thick sometimes, but this is not the thing to do in the middle of a break-up. It’s no wonder Cho was so jealous of Hermione.

Conclusion

Once again, as in many of my other essays, I think we can see patterns emerging around Harry and Hermione’s unique relationship. We see them repeatedly praising each other spontaneously. And Harry can’t help but blurt out how brilliant Hermione is to other people, even in situations where it’s arguably inappropriate.
Ron’s efforts at compliments are nothing like that, unfortunately. We might even feel a bit bad for him when he does begin to make an effort in DH, as it’s clear Ron is never going to have the impact on Hermione that Harry’s compliments do.
I mentioned at the outset that there are many people who say Harry isn’t appreciative enough toward Hermione. It’s true that we don’t hear him say it aloud all the time, particularly in the early books. Yet it’s very clear even in the first book that Harry thinks Hermione is a better wizard than he is. And he doesn’t hesitate to tell her, or to announce it to Dobby in CoS.
As the series progresses, Harry’s outward appreciation increases, to the point where we see him calling her “amazing” and “incredible” and the “best in our year,” terms that he only ever says about Hermione. Perhaps even more importantly, we see that Hermione knows how special she is to Harry, how sincere his compliments are, as we see her repeatedly responding with emotional smiles and even a “radiant expression” to these words.
I didn’t even explore most of the passages where Hermione praises or compliments Harry in the books (and there are plenty more of those too), but we can see the strength of Harry and Hermione’s friendship and care for each other. They both strive to raise each other up, especially in stressful times when they need it the most.

If there are any moments you think I missed, please point them out in comments! I’d like this essay to be a resource for those who want to debunk fandom claims concerning Harry’s supposed lack of appreciation toward Hermione.

To me this is the only theory that accounts for all the crazy things that have gone down on both sides throughout this case:
KR is hammered drunk when she drops JO (fact). In her drunkenness she accidentally runs JO over, killing him. She’s so drunk she doesn’t even notice, drives home, and goes to sleep.
At some point before the famous “hos long to die in cold search,” someone coming in/out of the Albert house sees the body, and goes and alerts the others. They freak out and start trying to revive him. They bring his body inside at carry it down to the basement at one point, and try to see if they can revive him (during this chaos is also when the dog could have chewed on his arm, idk). Nothing works, but no one calls the cops or an ambulance because the family still has no idea what happened, and if any of their loved ones could be at fault.
Realizing he is dead and not coming back, they turn their full attention to trying to figure out what happened. Everyone in the house is dumbfounded, and also keep in mind, they’re all drunk, so it’s chaos. There are moments where Brian Albert shouts at Colin and BH, demanding to know if either of them got in some sort of fight outside with JO without anyone noticing, hurt him (accidentally or not), and just aren’t admitting to it out of fear.
They genuinely have no idea what happened to JO, all they know is they have a beat up dead body on their property, and a big family to protect. Eventually, on account of the broken taillight glass, they figure that someone must have run him over. Who ran him over? Was it on purpose or by accident? They form theories and get in a big classic family shouting/finger pointing match, but in the end they genuinely have no idea and aren’t able to reach any conclusions—because no one ever actually say KR drop him off—but they’re running out of time.
At one point someone in the house suggests that the only scenario they can think of that makes sense is that he was probably the victim of a hit and run by a car or plow while walking up the road to the house (”maybe Karen and him were fighting on the ride over, so she dropped him off at a point sooner than the actual driveway out of pettiness, in/near the road”). After being hit by a car, they figure JO then tried to make it to their front door to get help, but collapsed due to his injuries/internal bleeding sustained during the hit-and-run before he could reach the door. Then after collapsing, either succumbed to his injuries or froze to death because of the cold. At this point, right around 2:27am, they naturally then wonder how long it would even take someone to die in the cold, if that is how he ultimately died—this is the moment that JM makes her famous “hos long” search.
The father Brian realizes that at their current rate, there’s no way they are going to pin down exactly what happened to JO by sunrise. He also realizes that while he’s not sure, there’s at least a possibility that someone in his house—maybe even one if his kids, or at least a beloved friend or other family member—is responsible for what happened in some way he is unaware of currently and won’t find out for awhile. Even if no one in the house is responsible, he knows they could still be viewed as responsible by authorities once there is an inevitable investigation.
Drunk and in panic mode, and worried about all the different ways that JO’s body could be interpreted/misinterpreted authorities in ways that jeopardize his family, the family conspires to do all that they can to limit the ways that the scene before them could be misinterpreted. No one in the family has any qualms about this because after all, they didn’t do anything wrong, they just don’t want to scene to have any possibility of appearing like they did anything wrong. Furthermore, because they are themselves law enforcement and have all the right connections, their egos tell them that they have what it takes to pull off such a conspiracy, and a harmless conspiracy at that. Ironically, this false belief of Brian Albert that, through some light manipulation and due to his experience as a cop, he can do a few small things to create an extra layer of protection for his family, is exactly what has backfired is now currently destroying his family…
I mentioned it before, but here is the KEY DETAIL/ASSUMPTION that this theory is truly built upon: the family, drunk and in panic mode, and attempting confirm whether JO is truly dead and not coming back (and if someone in the house is responsible, CLUE style), carry his body from the road/driveway into their house (out of public view) and down into the basement. Inevitably, blood gets everywhere, all over their basement floor. This is the critical element that creates the panic that makes them feel that conspiring to limit their family risk is truly the best option.
First of all, I don’t know if you dog-owners have ever had a cut on your foot or ankle, but in some random moments in life where I’ve gotten a cut and not even noticed it, my dog almost always finds it first and starts licking it like the little carnivore madman he is… I’m sure you already know what I’m getting at… In all the shouting and screaming and chaos, the Alberts rile up their dog and fail to take their dog into account as they panic-move the bloody body to the basement. In all the commotion, the dog gets extremely excited/overwhelmed, and its primal instinct kicks in and views JOs body as some sort of “Fresh kill from the family hunt.” At one point the dog spazzes out and starts licking the blood a bit and even chomps on JOs lifeless arm like a chew toy. If this sounds far-fetched, you must not be a dog owner, because excited dogs are capable of doing all kinds of wacky actions when they’re in weird and excitable moods, and it only takes a split second.
Anyway, back to what they decide to do. Brian Albert eventually realizes how insanely stupid of a mistake it was to bring JOs body inside their home and into the basement in their panicked/drunken attempt to get him out of the cold and indoors to see if they could revive him/see if he is still alive. They now know JO is truly dead, and now their basement is covered in his blood. Brian panics and realizes how authorities could interpret the blood in the basement in a million not-a-hit-and-run ways—especially because it will look incredibly bad/suspicious that they found the body and did not immediately call police or an ambulance. So, he takes the reigns and tells his family everything they are going to do from here to make everything look as good as possible for them…
First, they need to move the body back outside and into the snow so, at the very least, it goes back to looking like something that happened outside and outside only, thus minimizing the “fight in the basement” look of it and maximizing the “hit by a car” (which is actually what happened) look of it. He also realizes how bad it looks that none of them have contacted authorities about the body as they’ve been panicking trying to make sense of what happened / get on the same page out of their own self-interest, so Brian Albert also instructs everyone (or whoever is still at the house at this point, because by now they’ve started creating their timelines of coming/going and sending various ppl—Colin, etc.—home to protect them) that once they’ve brought the body outside, they are all going to act as if no one ever saw the body.
Also, by now they’ve all realized that it is 95% likely that it was KR who ran JO over when she was shitfaced. This is when they decide to have Jen McCabe go over in the AM to have her “help” KR find the body. They want KR to be the first person to appear to find the body, realize what she’s done, and then this will be the simplest/cleanest scenario. Why? Because if they decide to have it play out that someone at the Albert’s finds the body, it’s going to become impossibly complicated for all of them maintain the same story/timelines etc. of everything that transpired before/after that moment (exs. all of them telling each other one by one, chains of texts, calls, etc. telling various people, mini interactions of made up conversations that they would have to invent and keep track of, all of them “waking up” and alerting their families, and all the while trusting their acting skills in their current drunken/exhausted/emotional state, etc.). So, they make a calculated risk that they could sell the “we never noticed the body” story, and it would be a betteeasier story for them, and it’s of course the story they’re still sticking with now as they’ve taken the stand.
However, we know now, the “let’s just all act like we never found the body and have Karen ‘find it’ in the AM” strategy has backfired horribly, because they have failed to sell several parts of their testimonies/timelines (ex. J Nagel’s ”black blob,” line, etc) relating to several of them somehow driving/walking right past the body of grown man in the snow and not noticing it.
Anyway, this theory of mine is the only one I can think of that accounts for all the evidence, as well as everyone’s behavior throughout the trial. I think everyone has gotten too caught up in the false dichotomy of:

1. JO never made it inside the house + Karen ran JO over with the car and killed him
2. JO made it into the house, where someone or multiple people at the house (and dog) beat JO to death + now the McAlberts are bending over backwards to keep their stories straight.

To me it’s an obvious combination of the two, just leaving out the vicious basement beating part
No one beat JO to death. KR accidentally ran him over while driving slowly, but then the car dragged him as she drove (extremely common in hit and runs), and in a manner that produced his specific head injuries, killing him. She had no idea she was dragging his body for many yards. Someone coming in/out of the Albert’s find his body with zero context, launching the family into a frenzy as they try to figure out what happened and what to do about it to minimize the likelihood of their getting in trouble—they drunkenly decided to play God with their inflated townie egos—a product of their combined law enforcement experience, political connections, and blood-alcohol levels, when they should have just immediately called the cops.
The events unfold as described above, and, critically, they make the wrong decision to create their own McAlbert-family story of how it went down when they become afraid that their now bloody basement could make it look like they murdered him—especially the bad optics of the crowd given that (a) Colin is a meathead with a history of playing tough-guy as a teenager and (b) Brian Higgins allegedly/maybe had some sort of thing going on with KR.
This theory would explain all of the following:

• The “hos long to die in cold” search from inside the house before KR “found” the body, as the family panicked trying to figure out the various WTFs of the situation, and options for alibis.
• All the physical evidence related to the broken tail light, the hair, JO being found with the broken cocktail glass because he never made it inside, etc.
• Why the Alberts got rid of the dog and tore up their entire basement right after JOs death, because they wanted to make sure that no traces of JO—his blood, specifically—would be found inside the house.
• The version of KRs words to the first responders where she actually confesses “I hit him I him him”—because she did.
• Why Proctor was so brazen in saying he hoped KR killed herself & looked for her nudes and bragged about it, because he talked to the McAlberts throughout the investigation, who made him feel confident that she was in fact, a cop killer. And was especially upset at all the risks the McAlberts felt they needed to take to protect themselves from accusations as a result of her drunken actions.
• Why JOs shoe etc. was found so far away—his body was dragged by KR’s car and/or one of the Albert’s strewn his stuff about intentionally to make it look even more convincingly that the accident was initiated away from house, not on the property.
• Why the texts and timelines of Colin being driven home by Allie are all so fishy, because they were obviously fabricated to appear as if the texts/the care ride were happening under normal circumstances, not “what do we do about this body and all this blood?” and “Colin, have Allie come get you now, you don’t need to be here—me and Brian H know what we’re doing, we will handle the body + it will look suspicious if you’re here any longer” type circumstances.
• Why all the unbelievable testimonies from the McAlberts having to do with them somehow not noticing the body in those situations where it was like, right in front of them, are indeed lies and bullshit. Of course they all knew it was there, but they all agreed to pretend like they never saw it to make their story work.
• All the various instances of Albert’s deleting their texts/calls, getting rid of their phones, deleting their Ring cameras videos, etc.—bc these texts and calls and videos of course contained mountains of evidence showing how they all conspired with each other out of fear and ego instead of calling the police right away, and of course destroy all versions of their made up timelines.
• Why the McAlberts have all stayed strong, stuck to their stories, and not cracked under pressure (yet)… because they feel entitled to what they view are “white lies” because, after all KR is still the one who did it, and they’re not the bad ones.

In the end, upon finding JO’s body, The McAlberts tried to doctor some details and alter some timelines to make the whole case that much cleaner and give themselves some extra protection from scrutiny, the law, and (probably most importantly to them) to protect their precious reputations in Canton as powerful townies.
Of course, it is a rich irony that the very thing they were trying to prevent—people think that some of their family beat JO to death—is now exactly the theory that most of public is now leaning towards, now that they have taken the stand and all their suspect testimony, self-contradictions, and inexplicable behavior are on full display. Even more ironically, not only have they trashed their own reputations, they (along with Turtle Boy & co.) have inadvertently turned Karen into a cult hero—a small but brave woman stoically taking on not just lies and false accusation of her boyfriend’s murder, but the corruption of the Boston Police department at large.
And, on a more meta level, I think this theory also explains why KR carries herself the way she does. She knows she hit JO, and she feels terrible deep down, but at the same time, she’s always disliked the McAlberts and how special and untouchable they’ve always acted—big, corrupt fish in a small Canton pond. So, she finds comfort in knowing that even thought they didn’t kill JO, some bad people are still being exposed for the entitled liars and trashy townie dummies that they are. She also knows that she’s not really at any risk of being convicted at this point (unless the jury actually shocks the world), and she’s enjoying the spotlight and cult hero status that people like Turtle Boy have created for her.

So I got vibes from him from time to time that he liked me. I don't know if this was flirty banter but in acting class I was doing this love confession monologue I was given the note "you don't know how to act like you're attracted to this other character" from my professor. When I told the rest of the class this he sat right up and asked "do you not know how to talk to someone you like in real life or in the scene" and I just laughed it off saying "I don't know". When we got back from spring break he very enthusiastically said my name when I entered the classroom and asked if I did anything different with my hair I replied that I dyed it he said "I like it". We only really had one full conversation and it was right after I posted to my Instagram story that my other crush was leading me on I don't know if he was trying to acknowledge that or not but we talked about our sleep patterns (don't know if it matters but he gave me consistent eye contact) and he brought up that sometimes he'll wake up at like 5 AM and listen to a band, he paused to find out if I knew/ liked the band, which I honestly did, don't know why I said no and then continued to tell me he'll sometimes cry over his ex-girlfriend I said sorry but he said nah don't worry about it was a while ago. He also told me he lived only .6 miles away from campus. He constantly makes sure to wave hi to me even if he's in the middle of something in class. (Like breaking away from the scene he was working on to smile and wave hi to me) Or if we see each other elsewhere on campus. When my professor dropped all of our papers on the ground he was the only one to stay behind with me to help pick them up. I have noticed one time him staring at me when I entered the room. And when he was giving feedback to me and another classmember's scene I some reason started nodding and we locked eyes and he nodded back. I really want to know him better and see if there's something there but I don't know to do it so it doesn't come across weird since we haven't interacted a whole bunch and the semester is over. We do follow each other on Instagram. I never got his number because at the time I wasn't ready because of the other crush I had. Even when that ended I wanted to ensure it wasn't a "rebound" situation and I ended up hurting both of us and that took me till the end of the semester. Any advice would be appreciated!
TLDR: During the semester got signals from somebody that they were interested in me. Overlooked them because of other situation. Is it too late or is there something I should try?

Hi all! We just got back from my kiddos’ first trip to WDW and they LOVED it! My kids are both dinosaur kids and huge fans of Toy Story. My 5 year old’s favorite “movie” is Toy Story That Time Forgot and he spent the whole time we were there (MK, AK, and HS) looking for a Trixie toy, to no avail. Does anyone know where I can find one?
