So when Polar Patriots (PP) came out, there was such an overwhelmingly negative reaction to this gun that I decided to try and give it an earnest go.
The short version of this post is this: I don't think it's a terrible gun. I do think it could use some revisions, but it's flaws are not the sort of thing that makes me go "throw it out and start over."
Basically... it's stuck between a bunch of niches and doesn't quite know what it wants to be.
It feels like the energy equivalent of a Marksman rifle, and the concept feels like it's supposed to reward patience and timing with the charge.
The damage is alright, feels like it could use 50-100 more if they really want to commit to the slow fire rate + chargeup. But the AoE is big enough to one-shot a Strider pilot around the armor, and hypothetically big enough to do crowd control.
It feels to me like it's supposed to fit in a similar spot to the OG Eruptor, namely long-range sniper support for small mobs.
It just has so many features that seem to undercut it in most hypothetical use cases:
Versus Bots: - Not enough damage to reliably deal with volumes of Medium enemies en masse
Versus bugs: - Too slow to deal with advancing crowds in close combat
Versus both: - No scope to use at longer range to make up for the lack of fire range or damage. Just dot sights.
Maybe give this thing a decent scope (not asking for 200m like on the Diligence, but just SOME magnification options), and commit to/reward the chargeup gimmick and I think it could be fun.
Like if it had damage that scaled (to a maximum cap) based on how long you hold the charge. Maybe do the same for range.
So you can have a decent pepperbox rifle at close range that packs lesspunch, but a bigger damage/AoE/range projectile if you hold onto it longer. The fun lies in getting the timing down to vary it in different situations and ranges.
But the aesthetics feel good, it feels punchy. It just needs a few tweaks and for all of it's features to... face in the same direction in order to commit to an intended purpose. I hope AH gives it some love in future patches.
