My (29F) husband (33M) and I have been together for 7 years. I’ll be honest and say that our ability to communicate when we’re upset hasn’t been the greatest. Usually when one of us is angry or upset it results in us yelling a bit, walking away and then once we’ve cooled off we’ll resolve the issue.
Recently my husband decided to change careers and has been out of work for 3 months. This week he’s doing a certificate that is quite intensive and is a requirement for a job he is interviewing for (and will be needed for most jobs in the career he’s hoping to change to).
Tomorrow is his only day off during the days he’s completing the certificate. We were both excited to hang out and spend time with each other tonight and were having a good time just hanging out and talking.
What felt like out of the blue my husband started accusing me of being annoyed with him. I wasn’t doing anything different from what I could tell. I was just on my phone while he was letting the dogs out, and put my phone down when he walked back over to me. I told him I was fine and we started discussing what we were going to do as he wanted to play a card game but I wanted to do something else.
As we were discussing this, he again accused me of being annoyed. I wasn’t annoyed in the slightest, and told him that. I asked what I was doing wrong and he said I had “a grumpy look on my face and was clearly annoyed”.
I honestly didn’t know what he was talking about. I was maybe a bit tired compared to earlier, and I think we were on separate pages as to what we were up for, but I was doing exactly what I was doing earlier as far as talking to him and hanging out, although at this point I was annoyed by him now continuously accusing me of being annoyed.
I told him that it’s a double standard that he can be a bit tired or be on his phone, but if I do it then I’m accused of being mad. From there the conversation escalated back and forth to the point where he was yelling and slammed the refrigerator door causing magnets go flying. Somewhat in shock at his level of anger I told him to F off and walked away. He called me a bitch (not at all typical for our relationship or fights) and I went red and threw a semi empty soda can at him (not something I have EVER done before), at which point he threw hot sauce that was one the counter at me. In the heat of this I threw my wedding rings at him and said we were done. We yelled more. We said really awful things- I’ll be honest and say I said worse things. And he left.
I feel so completely awful. I’m absolutely ashamed of my behavior and how toxic this stupid fight became. We’ve had a couple screaming matches, but never ever anything like this. I know that how I acted wasn’t okay. I grew up around adults who acted like this when they were mad and have worked hard to take be responsible for my actions and not be like them. I don’t know how we got to this point over such a stupid reason to fight in the first place. I don’t know what to do. He won’t answer my calls or texts. I feel like I just imploded my marriage.

So this is a bit of a impulsive decision to quit, I had started getting some breathing pains and it really freaked me out. I am seeing a doctor in a few days but I was going to get one last one since the one I have now is getting low. However the last two times I went to get one, the store was shut or the attendant had left for 30mins so I kinda took this as the universe telling me it’s time to give it up.
So I went to the chemist where all the nicorette products were right in front of the prescriptions so literally where everyone was which was so daunting. I stood back looking at all the options for atleast 5-10mins and people kept on thinking I was in the line before I just grabbed the cool berry one. I thought about the gum but I’m living with family that don’t know I smoke and so the quick mist was the closest thing I felt comfortable with. Tried it twice and it is so strong and also made me feel a bit sick but no cravings for the vape yet.

It’s my daughter’s 7th birthday tomorrow. Husband and I went all out and got a airbnb that was pretty expensive but worth it because it has literally everything a kid can dream of and I knew my kids were going to have a blast. We’re staying for 4 days.
We invited my husbands side of the family because I don’t have any relationships with my family. My husband has a brother (my BIL) who has 3 kids around my 4 kids ages and they love to play together so I was thrilled for all of our kids.
First night was already a lot of drama. Lots of drinking that shouldn’t have happened. BIL is an alcoholic and takes it to the next level and we had a talk with him before this explaining that this won’t be tolerated. He promised us nothing would go on and he would be on his best behavior basically. I found out he was doing coke in the common bathroom that not only we use, but all of our children use. I know this because he left white powder on the counter and on the floor. I was livid and confronted him but he swore up and down he didn’t do anything.
He stayed up all night and was mad that nobody was hanging out with him. This dragged into the next day, today. All he did was complain that nobody wanted to drink and that nobody was paying attention to him. We were all focused on the kids and supervising them as they swam and stuff and he threw a tantrum saying he wanted to go home. I spent almost 1k on food for everyone and as I was preparing it, he asked me where the closest restaurant was because he didn’t want what I was making. Then I find out he is calling people to pick him up because he’s bored and wants to leave. I told him he needs to go if this is how he’s going to act and he is ruining everyone’s time. He was absolutely trashed at this point and it was only 12pm
Well he left, and took his kids. We offered to keep his kids for the rest of the stay but he refused. His kids were devastated and left crying because they didn’t understand why they had to leave. My daughter was absolutely crushed. She was crying, I was crying, my husband was crying. It was a mess. She said “my cousins aren’t going to be here for my birthday”. They were the only other kids here besides her siblings so she has no one to play with. She said this is her worst birthday yet. I feel absolutely awful. I tried to explain to her it’s not her fault but sometimes grown ups make bad choices and unfortunately it ruins it for everyone else. Of course she doesn’t understand. We’ve tried to protect her and shield her away from what goes on with my BIL and she hasn’t really been exposed to this so she doesn’t know what he did that was so bad.
I’m mad that all this food went to waste, all this money down the drain just because he couldn’t keep his shit together for the weekend. I’m mad we even invited him in the first place, I was so dumb thinking he would have some type of respect for this house and for us. Now we probably won’t have a relationship with him going forward and that just makes it worse because our kids and his kids are going to suffer from it the most. They are the only cousins my kids have :(. What do I do here?

Clearly the farmer had marked Mircea's fine armour and garb, for in the darkest hours he has sent his own very lovely daughter to the prince. In reward for her hospitality, Mircea left her a few coins and, as a token, a dragon-marked strap-end from his frog. He paid the farmer in the morning as well, in thanks for the shelter. Then they were off again, riding and walking and riding, the temporarily — God grant it be only temporary! — dispossessed prince and his band of loyal followers.
They crossed into Transylvania, and Mircea knew by certain signs, and by gossip picked up along the way, that they would not need to go much further to reach the aid he sought.
Hunyadi was near.
At last, on a cold purple evening, they found the camp. A young, golden-haired soldier, tall, with a noble face, halted them, and so Mircea dismounted.
"I am the son of Dracul," he announced, "and I seek to join Hunyadi's banner."
The soldier smirked.
"So, you would join my father? Very well. Come along, young dragon."

It’s been a decade since I left a highly abusive ex. I never thought I’d have to see him again until he walked into my work. I’m so angry that I had to leave my station because seeing him brought back everything he did to me.
It started off as the usual pattern. He started becoming controlling then the insults came, it escalated from there. He would scream how I was worthless, a stupid fucking b, pathetic, no one would ever love me, the whole 9 yards.
Then came the punching of walls beside me as I would be crying for him to stop screaming at me.
I lost my virginity to him which was a horrible experience. It really hurt when we started and when I voiced that, he just said it’s going to hurt while going harder. My head kept hitting the couch and he didn’t care nor stop.
I would try everyday to say the right things and behave a certain way in order to not make him angry. I often failed.
One day we got into a fight because I had embarrassed him in front of his friend. They had came over my house where he immediately raided my fridge for alcohol and went to the Tv to play games where he completely ignored me the whole time. I was clearly upset, that’s how I embarrassed him - by being upset. We went into my room when we started to fight. He put his hands around my neck to chock me. I stepped closer daring him to do it, I had snapped, he let go and started crying. I ended up comforting him. That was the usual pattern, me making him feel better about his actions.
Then it escalated one night when I went to pick him up. I was upset because I had to drive 40 min to get him. He made me feel shitty that I was tired from work and wanted to hang out a different day. When I picked him up he was quiet as I told him my frustrations when I was done talking he had said nothing. I could feel the panic as he didn’t say a word and was completely still. We were on the highway going 75 at this point. He slowly reached over putting one hand on my shoulder and the other on the steering wheel. He started screaming right beside my face telling me how I’m a stupid fucking b. That’s the only thing I remember him saying, I just remember his cold spit hitting my face and the car starting to veer off the road where my survival instant came in. He didn’t care what was about to happen, he was ready for both of us to crash. I started screaming for him to let go of the wheel and started hitting him for him to let go. I had never put hands in anyone in my life nor have it since. He finally let go before we went completely off the road. Then he started punching the car continuing his tirade. I kept driving, just frozen. That was Valentine’s Day.
There’s so much more that happened in between and more that happened afterwards. The whole relationship left me traumatized for a long time. It took time to heal and work through it all. The hardest part was forgiving myself for staying so long. I have healed and put it behind me. Until today.
I didn’t even realize it was him until he did a motion when I asked if he needed help. I recognized it immediately then I registered who it was. It all came rushing back and got fully triggered. I had to immediately step away and told my manager I needed someone to cover my post because someone was in the building that I couldn’t be around. All the employees are all on radios. He asked me why and I just word vomited that it was because he tried to kill me. Which now, I’m horrified I said it to everyone because I’m a very private person. My manager came to me immediately and asked me who he was and what he was wearing so he could kick him out. I couldn’t answer what he was wearing at all, all that came to mind was his cold spit on my face.
We started to walk to the room where the cameras are so I could point him out when I saw him walking our way. My manager and I got into the room for me to start. When he was going to tell him to leave, he had be lined to the door because he knew what was about to happen.
I’m so angry. I’ve long moved on and I’ve had a great loving life since that time in my life. I’m angry that he still had the ability to trigger me after all of these years. I’m angry my body reacted to him and my body went to a trauma response. I’m thankful that I work in a place where everyone is supportive but the embarrassment is hard to swallow at the moment.

I'm understandably salty after being at extraction with all the super samples, I'm RIGHT about to enter the Pelican, and I step on a corpse in a way the game apparently can't handle and so it flings me at mach 22 into the ocean on the clear other side of the map. All those samples, gone, reduced to atoms. Nothing I or my team could do about it. Everyone is left confused and I have to explain that all our samples are fish food now.
Would it be too much to have the game detect if a player gets launched to an otherwise unreachable spot, and then just politely teleport them back to where they were just seconds ago, no harm no foul?

 | So I am 16 and have gone through braces but the left side of my face is different then my right on the left side my eye is way bigger and lower and it’s a different shape my lip lifts a bit and my jawline is not as sharp as my right side. The whole left side of my face looks droopy If I put my finger under the right side of my jaw and pull nothing happens but if I put my finger under the left side of my jaw it makes a loud pop and it feels like my jaw moves out of place alot which i know isn’t normal it means there’s a problem I talked to my orthodontist and they said i might just grow out of it but i’m not sure. do I have a misaligned jaw? will I grow out of it? do I need surgery to correct my asymmetrical face? I'm going to be frank and say I've never made a game before. However, I've studied this particular game in and out nearly since the beginning of its development a year ago. It's taken a plateau and the dev has gone radio silent. I myself have taken an interest in game design (not enough that I would have immediately launched into a world of MMORPGs, of course; a story-heavy point-and-click or text adventure because I love text adventures maybe) and my sister went to school for it. I can learn how to use a program and I'll definitely have help. But right now, the dev has been silent for months. And it's killing the community and the game. It breaks my heart. He's already tried to sell the game once, but they didn't do anything except change the Discord art to something racially questionable (don't ask) and he took it back and went quiet again. So I want to propose to buy it.
Once I learn how to be a game developer, I'll propose to buy it. As this is his first game, too, and it's still young despite being over a year old (he's been on vacation for a while...), I'm confident I can learn the skills necessary to catch up if I put my mind to it. I've been a staff member on the team overseeing the community for a while, now. So, I'm learning how stuff on the community side works hands-on. I've studied every aspect of the game I could from my side of the screen. (Handy when catching cheaters who up their stats just enough to not be noticeable to the average person!)
A few problems I'm running into (aside from lack of experience with game development on my end, which I will rectify) would be not knowing what to offer him. I tried to look up what it takes to buy another game, but most results talk about very old games, stuff like ancient NES and Atari games. I'm trying to revive a dying game from an indie dev who likely is taking a permanent mental health vacation. Yes, he's a one-man army. He does everything himself. He left the Discord to a few other people (us) but doesn't care about it.
Any advice would be welcome! (If you're going to tell me I don't have enough experience to buy the right to an indie game, I know this already. I might not even go through with this, but I need to try. There are others in the community with game development experience, my sister went to school for it and her husband has family in the business. I can't watch this game die. I've met so many cool and wonderful people here. I don't want to see it end like this. Hey, maybe I offer to buy the game and he tells me no because he has a cool new overhaul on his computer he's been working on and just hasn't told anyone because he's awful with communication and he'll actually take interest in the game community again and start at least acknowledging the ideas and opinions of his players.)

I had a TOA a few months ago and was hospitalized and on antibiotics and ultimately had to have drains placed. I had a follow up ultrasound two weeks after drain removal and the one side looked good but the other side they couldn’t even see my ovary on the ultrasound and the abscess wasn’t much smaller. I have random mild pains in my pelvis. My doctor ordered repeat imaging in 3 months and when I reported the pain they just said continue to monitor for signs of infection such as severe pain, fever, etc. Has anyone else had a TOA drained and recovered without surgery? Is some random pelvic pain normal during healing? I am interested in hearing other’s experiences.

I have bruising on my upper thighs, hips and lower back not caused by any trauma. I’ve had a lot of bloodwork done (which I can’t currently access) in the last 18 months to try and work out why I have a chronically enlarged spleen by a small margin 1-3cm. I’ve also been having digestive issues for some time. Chronic pain in left side and low back. I feel like there is something inside me. Almost like a balloon is being blown up and putting pressure on other things.
I’m seeing a haematologist and she said nothing out of the ordinary with my blood test, I’ve been referred for a CAT scan which I’ll have next week. She said possibly I could have lymphoma inside of my spleen but she didn’t sound convinced at all.
I’m losing a lot of hair and I’m pretty tired a lot, but I do have 2 young children. Also supposed that could be due to hormones.
Could I have some sort of blood disorder that is more difficult to diagnose? I feel like I’m just going in circles and Doctors might look at me like I’m a hypochondriac. I just know something isn’t right. Thanks for reading

I don't know exactly when my pain started but it became worse as I began working in a huge hardware store. If you know anything about these stores it's that they have concrete floors. Standing on said floors for 9-12 hours a day and walking to and from work can really take a toll on the body. Especially if you have some sort of unchecked issue within. I would wake up in the middle of the night often not being able to stand on my left leg+foot for a while. This happened through out highschool and I thought my body was just trying to wake up. Then, when I started working I noticed it hurt worse and it often hurt to sit down.
This was taken care of through months of physical therapy. I learned it was my SI joint in the small of my back. This wasn't the only issue though. I also had consistent back pain. I could temporarily get rid of it with some pain meds and go on my way. But then the pain became a shooting pain. This would start in my hip and down my leg. As time went on, it spread worse to my other hip and leg. Then up my back and to my foot. The shooting is a extremely painful and quick sensation. It used to not linger.
I have tried to get this fixed ever since I went to PT. Everyone has made me been over backwards or laughed at me. My pain and symptoms are accelerating. I noticed a month or two ago that I was shaking more than usual. Normally this is caused my stress or anxiety. I chalked it up to that because my medicine normally takes it away. It gradually got worse though. I started to get pins and needles in my right arm. Shocks of pain down said arm and hand. Now, it uncontrollably shakes when I start feeling pain in that hand.
Today this has been the most pain I've ever felt in my 22 years on this earth. I've never felt more embarrassed in my life as well. I've always been okay with helping my mom out when her body hurts her as well but I've never had to almost carry her. She had to almost carry me to bed after asking me to squeegee the water out of the mop. My hands were too weak to hold them. My legs were giving out beneath me. All I could do was sob. It hurts so much. I just want someone to fix me. No one believes me because I'm 'too young'. I know I need the help. I have the insurance and want to use it while I can. I am so sick of waiting until things go horribly. I've almost fallen down so many times because of this pain. It hurts so much I can't even think right at times. Everyone in my life thinks it's a joke.
I just want someone to see me. I just want to know what's wrong with me. I don't wanna life my life in pain anymore. I've done that for years mentally. I don't wanna physically do this. It's gotten so bad it's started affecting my mental health just as it got good. I don't wanna fail myself. I know I deserve more than this. Anyone know what it could be?

To start this off, I’m 15 years old and I have lived in America for 8 years. This post isn’t necessarily a life story (I’ll try to keep that short), but more of a societal issue I’m facing. Let’s just say that I’ve been through lots of family issues/trauma and loneliness, which resulted in my depression.
To make my situation as short as possible, I’ll condense a lot of my life. My mom and dad don’t like each other. I have much worse family issues than the average Indian family in America. I have an older sister. I used to have a good amount of friends in elementary school, but I lost all of them in middle school because I went to another school. I reshifted later to the school all my old friends go to in sophomore year (the year I’m currently in), but most forgot me. I had to deal with a lot of loneliness across my middle school and high school time. My sister also had to leave for college exactly when I reached 9th grade. This left me even more lonely. But finding support is almost impossible for me.
So know that you know the bare minimum of my situation, I’ll delve into why being an Indian male with depression sucks. I’ll start off by saying if I was any other race, I think my depression would more acknowledged and taken seriously. The world just doesn’t seem to like Indians for some reason. Now, to any non-Indian, I think I need to explain the social norms of our people. Boys tend to be hyper, trouble makers, with little care. Generally, the male kids tend to be seen as more immature and basically problem-less. Meanwhile, girls are tend to be more responsible. The female kids are seen as more mature. And in the Indian family dynamics, the girls tend to be the ones dealing with all the family issues/burdens while the boys are the ones that are unaware. Indian girls are also more insecure about their race and looks, while boys tend to not be. This causes indian girls to not really like Indian boys because they view them as immature and childish. And to an extent, I can understand this. It really sucks to be an Indian girl who has to go through all that. But I had to go through family issues too. I’m not gonna delve into the family issues cause they’re a bit traumatic, but they basically shaped the person I am. So I dealt with just as much (and even more to be frank) trauma than the average Indian girl. This made me stand out from other Indian boys. In America, the Indians tend to all be in a friend group based on grade because of our small numbers. I’m the only person in my grade and race who isn’t in a close friend group. The Indian boys from my school don’t really like me that much because I’m so introverted and gloomy. Indian girls inherently don’t like Indian boys, hence they don’t like me either. It also doesn’t help that I’m not the best looking, which only makes them dislike me more. I look kinda like your stereotypical nerdy Indian. And obviously other races won’t like me because of our stereotype.
Stereotypical nerdy Indian men are seen as creeps and misogynistic, which makes pretty much the entire world hate us. And I can understand that some of us are but to people like me, this hurts me so bad. I’m very reserved and I would consider not misogynistic at all. Even though I’ve met a lot of women who shun me for being Indian, I’ve always been a strong advocate for women. If I were at least attractive, then people would like me more. And if I was a girl, then other girls would support me. I was naturally born into a terrible stereotype.
So boys from my own race don’t accept me, girls from my race don’t accept me, and other races also don’t accept me. I can’t explain this to my sister because she also thinks I’m immeasurable and childish. I try to show her my true feelings but she keeps dismissing them. And my parents are immigrants, and they don’t have a clue on mental health, so they can’t help either. A psychiatrist would be too expensive (and a pain in the ass to explain to my parents). I can’t go to the school psychiatrists either because they just call home and that would put me in a worse situation. I know this post sounds a bit generalizing, but that’s what I’m against. I’m really struggling to just be able to find someone who can support me, but everyone hates me and I didn’t even do anything. I don’t know what I should do because I’m so lonely.

2024.05.19 07:42 whosevelt Question about the book of Ruth (and a partial theory)
I've seen numerous commentators pointing out various parallels between the story of Judah and Tamar in Genesis, and the story of Ruth. The obvious parallels are obvious: both involve young widows who seem to have limited prospects, who, through careful planning, end up in clan-connected unions, a child of which is a forebears of the Davidic dynasty.
But on a closer reading, it seems pretty clear to me that it goes further than that: the book of Ruth is a deliberate re-imagining of the story of Judah and Tamar, similar to the way modern authors might take key elements from a Greek myth and re-set it in a modern city. I'm out of my depth here on the literary side, but I'm thinking of like, Pygmalion (ancient version) becoming My Fair Lady, or Perseus becoming Percy Jackson. And like other reimaginings, a lot of the substance of book lies in the aspects of the source material that the later author chooses to subvert.
One example I can give to illustrate the point, despite typing this out on my phone... In chapter 1, Naomi tells Ruth and Orpah to go back to their mothers' homes. Initially, they intend to disregard her and accompany her back to Bethlehem. Then Naomi says, (paraphrase), do I have sons in my belly that will marry you someday? If I met a man now, and got pregnant tonight and bore sons, would you wait around until they're grown so they can marry you?
Now, on its face, Naomi's comment makes no sense. Why would Ruth and Orpah have to wait until she had children in order to remarry? Naomi does not contemplate that they'd have difficulty marrying if they were to stay in Moab - in fact, she wishes them peace with their future husbands. And, as the story indicates later on, Ruth at least seems to have been a desirable match. Boaz notices her immediately upon his arrival at the harvest, and then warns his workers not to harass her. Later, he praises Ruth for ignoring the Bethlehemite "youths, whether rich or poor." (Ch. 3).
In part, Naomi's reference to this hypothetical marriage to her nonexistent children seems to foreshadow the quasi-levirate marriage at the end of the story, when Boaz marries Ruth to "establish the name of the deceased on his estate." But in itself, even that makes no sense - if Naomi were to remarry and have children, the children from another man would not be part of Elimelekh's clan, and there would be no connection to Elimelekh's or Mahlon's estates.
Rather, Naomi's speech is a clear reference to and subversion of the story of Judah and Tamar. She tells Ruth to return to her parents' home because there is nobody to carry out the levirate marriage, just the way Judah told Tamar to return to her parents' home because there was nobody to carry out the levirate marriage, since Shelah was too young. That's why Naomi specifically emphasizes that it would be ridiculous to wait around until the nonexistent children get older. Because it recalls Judah, who had no intention of allowing Tamar to marry Shelah, but dismissed Tamar on the claim that Shelah was too young, leaving Tamar in widow's clothing at her parents' home indefinitely. Precisely unlike Judah, who lied to Tamar and sent her off to indefinite widowhood at her parents' house, Naomi tries to send Ruth back to her parents' house out of concern for Ruth's wellbeing, but fails to convince Ruth, who stays to care for her mother in law.
If this theory is correct, it could also shed some light on another open question. Interpreters debate the threshing floor scene where Ruth approaches a sleeping Boaz and uncovers his feet. Is this a euphemism for sex? Did Ruth intend to seduce Boaz? Did Naomi instruct Ruth to seduce Boaz, also euphemistically, when she said, "do what he tells you to do?"
To interpret this scene, we need to look at the parallel scene in the story of Judah and Tamar. In that story, Tamar, still a young widow in her father's house, knows that Shelah has come of age, and she has not been summoned to marry him. She hears that Judah is heading out to shear the sheep (where, presumably, he will be outside of his normal routine, and more easily accessible to an outsider, like Boaz on the threshing floor). So she doffs her widow's garb, and puts on a veil, and waits by the crossroads near the town where Judah is headed.
Now, I always thought that in the story, Tamar posed as a prostitute. But that's not actually what the Bible says. In fact, if the story ended after Tamar stationed herself at the crossroads in a veil, you would say, well, I guess she was waiting there to confront Judah, who wouldn't let her marry Shelah and wouldn't free her from her widowhood. But on a closer reading, it seems pretty clear to me that it goes further than that: the book of Ruth is a deliberate re-imagining of the story of Judah and Tamar, similar to the way modern authors might take key elements from a Greek myth and re-set it in a modern city. I'm out of my depth here on the literary side, but I'm thinking of like, Pygmalion (ancient version) becoming My Fair Lady, or Perseus becoming Percy Jackson. And like other reimaginings, a lot of the substance of book lies in the aspects of the source material that the later author chooses to subvert.
One example I can give to illustrate the point, despite typing this out on my phone... In chapter 1, Naomi tells Ruth and Orpah to go back to their mothers' homes. Initially, they intend to disregard her and accompany her back to Bethlehem. Then Naomi says, (paraphrase), do I have sons in my belly that will marry you someday? If I met a man now, and got pregnant tonight and bore sons, would you wait around until they're grown so they can marry you?
Now, on its face, Naomi's comment makes no sense. Why would Ruth and Orpah have to wait until she had children in order to remarry? Naomi does not contemplate that they'd have difficulty marrying if they were to stay in Moab - in fact, she wishes them peace with their future husbands. And, as the story indicates later on, Ruth at least seems to have been a desirable match. Boaz notices her immediately upon his arrival at the harvest, and then warns his workers not to harass her. Later, he praises Ruth for ignoring the Bethlehemite "youths, whether rich or poor." (Ch. 3).
In part, Naomi's reference to this hypothetical marriage to her nonexistent children seems to foreshadow the quasi-levirate marriage at the end of the story, when Boaz marries Ruth to "establish the name of the deceased on his estate." But in itself, even that makes no sense - if Naomi were to remarry and have children, the children from another man would not be part of Elimelekh's clan, and there would be no connection to Elimelekh's or Mahlon's estates.
Rather, Naomi's speech is a clear reference to and subversion of the story of Judah and Tamar. She tells Ruth to return to her parents' home because there is nobody to carry out the levirate marriage, just the way Judah told Tamar to return to her parents' home because there was nobody to carry out the levirate marriage, since Shelah was too young. That's why Naomi specifically emphasizes that it would be ridiculous to wait around until the nonexistent children get older. Because it recalls Judah, who had no intention of allowing Tamar to marry Shelah, but dismissed Tamar on the claim that Shelah was too young, leaving Tamar in widow's clothing at her parents' home indefinitely. Precisely unlike Judah, who lied to Tamar and sent her off to indefinite widowhood at her parents' house, Naomi tries to send Ruth back to her parents' house out of concern for Ruth's wellbeing, but fails to convince Ruth, who stays to care for her mother in law.
If this theory is correct, it could also shed some light on another open question. Interpreters debate the threshing floor scene where Ruth approaches a sleeping Boaz and uncovers his feet. Is this a euphemism for sex? Did Ruth intend to seduce Boaz? Did Naomi instruct Ruth to seduce Boaz, also euphemistically, when she said, "do what he tells you to do?"
To interpret this scene, we need to look at the parallel scene in the story of Judah and Tamar. In that story, Tamar, still a young widow in her father's house, knows that Shelah has come of age, and she has not been summoned to marry him. She hears that Judah is heading out to shear the sheep (where, presumably, he will be outside of his normal routine, and more easily accessible to an outsider, like Boaz on the threshing floor). So she doffs her widow's garb, and puts on a veil, and waits by the crossroads near the town where Judah is headed.

I've had my little guy (his name is actually Little) for about six months. He hangs out all over his tank, generally on top of two of his hides - he likes to be on the bottom, and horizontal. He also crams himself up at the top now and then, on the mister hose or the fake vines I have up there. I cleaned his tank out completely today, top to bottom, soup to nuts. He is now parked upside down on the door. He has never, not once, done that. He's not an upside down kind of guy - he loves his log, his house and his wheel. He moved away for a bit when I fed him some crickets (apology gift/bribe), then just moved from the right side of the door to the left.

It was pretty busy today because a nearby college had graduation earlier in the day, and everyone was either trying to get lunch or was just wanting to walk around in their regalia. I had no problem with that.
We were trying to find a parking spot—any spot would have sufficed—and were rounding the corner near a public lot when we saw someone parked at the curb starting to pull out. We stopped, waited for them to leave, and slowly started to pull in. The exit to the public lot was right there and the traffic going the other direction was busy, so my friend who was driving didn't want to hit anyone or cause an accident. This was when we fucked up.
Someone who was coming out of the public lot had their turn signal on, but didn't cut their wheel or angle their car toward the spot (on their passenger side). They weren't even actually out of the lot, or even in the curb cut. There was no indication they had intent to park there except their turn signal, which—when turning into oncoming traffic—only meant they were turning. In lieu of any indication they were going for the spot, my friend slowly pulled forward. Immediately, the driver starts honking (not a long honk, more a lot of short honks) and both he and the woman in the passenger seat start flicking their arms toward the spot. We were already halfway into the spot with people behind us in traffic, so we parked quick to let them pass.
The driver immediately pulled up next to us in the middle of a busy street and the entire car rolled down their windows to scream at us. They were so close that we could hear them shouting even though our windows were closed. I didn't think to record until the backseat passenger flipped us off, then stuck her arm out the window to emphasize that she was flipping us off (as if we couldn't see it already). I was more worried that she was reaching toward my friend's car to throw something or try and hit the windows. They mimicked crying (which made no sense because we were just sitting there staring at them in confusion) and kept flipping us off and shouting until they drove away. The backseat passenger tried to throw her coffee at my friend's car, but did such a piss poor job of it that most of it was on the outside of THEIR car. Barely a tablespoon actually hit my friend's car. (Don't worry, I started recording the minute they pulled up.)
The coffee place we were going to was right next door so we just got out and went about our day. One of us did stay behind to make sure they could film if the family came back and tried to harass us again. Luckily, they didn't. My friend thinks that they didn't come back because I was recording what they were doing, and you can see two of their faces and what they're doing very, very clearly. I can't post it here because there's no option to post video but if I could, I would.
I've never had that happen to me before, and honestly it was kind of funny to watch someone get that upset over a parking space. It wasn't even marked or metered or anything, it was just empty parkable space. Crazy.
