2024.05.19 07:41 Waste-Success-6395 best friend cut me off and ghosted me for no apparent reason

this is going to be a lengthy post. i have only posted here on reddit once, so forgive me for any mistakes.
as the title says, my best friend cut me off for no reason. for some context, this happened just a couple days before our high school graduation, which was today, 05/18.
i guess this started on thursday, which was the day of our senior picnic my high school organized. since she was in an ap exam for the first half of the picnic, she showed up late as she had mentioned she would before. my other friend (who is also one of our best friends, we have a trio as well as another friend group) and i show up and join a group of friends to sit with. after about 30 minutes, my best friend shows up.
she stayed for 5 minutes. five. minutes. she said one thing, which was just a question about my english class. i responded to her, and she went on her phone for the short time she was there. the conversation was steered towards her multiple times, but she acted uninterested. to be clear, she wasn’t angry - she was very friendly the entire time although she only spoke once.
suddenly she gets up, announces she’s going to the bathroom in a friendly tone, and she never comes back. multiple friends and i text asking her where she went, to which she told us she had left. when my other friend asked her why, she said she didn’t want to text the reason why and would rather speak in person? everybody was confused.
i give her some time to cool down, and later i text her asking if she is upset about something. no response. days go by, still nothing. so, i send one more text saying if she’s angry about something then that is okay, but i want her to communicate it instead of ignoring everybody. still nothing and now it is the night after our graduation ceremony.
she skipped our good friend’s grad party, skipped a hang out our friend group planned, and is ignoring everybody but the other best friend i had mentioned before that she wanted to “talk to privately”. she didn’t meet with us for photos with our caps and gowns, didn’t clap for me when my name was called, nothing.
my best friend has a history of losing people. i never pried or looked into it since it was from her past, but so many people i talk to have some issue with her. i’m trying to not take it personally as more and more people express the same thing happened to them with her. it just hurts because this is 4 years down the drain over something that i don’t know. i’ve never lost a friend before, i don’t think i have ever even argued with a friend before so this is all very new to me. my friend group is very supportive and has given me a shoulder to lean on, but it hurts. if she cared about the friendship, i thought she would work with me instead of against me.
i just don’t get it. we were talking that morning before her exam and everything was normal. to me, her ignoring me shows she never really valued the friendship or cared for me enough. i just feel so heartbroken.

Is Sean Kirkpatrick part of The Program? And that's why he took the role at AARO to say it doesn't exist?
I've been running this idea in my head over and over the past week or so after deciding to look at Sean Kirkpatrick's bio as Director of AARO based on his CV history and the now-infamous photo of him in the 2018 meeting that was leaked by Brandon Fugal of Skinwalker Ranch that Kirkpatrick claimed in his interview with Stephen Greenestreet he didn't attend.
You can find a copy of that bio here.
I couldn't put anything together until I saw the below tweet from Klaus on X/Twitter via his Patterns Tell Stories Podcast handle from almost two weeks ago taken from an official OSTI.gov document. OSTI is the U.S. Department of EnergyvOffice of Scientific and Technical Information.
Here is the abstract, which states:
The International Biological and Chemical Threat Reduction Program at Sandia National Laboratories is developing a 15 - year technology road map in support the United States Government efforts to reduce international chemical and biological dangers . In 2017, the program leadership chartered an analysis team to explore dangers in the future international chemical and biological landscape through engagements with national security experts within and beyond Sandia to gain a multidisciplinary perspective on the future . This report offers a high level landscape of future chemical and biological dangers based upon analysis of those engagements and provides support for further technology road map development.
The link for the abstract above will also take you to a 35-page report. Here are its Table of Contents.

Here are his job titles taken from his bio:
Dr. Kirkpatrick began his career in Defense and Intelligence related science and technology immediately out of graduate school. After receiving his Ph.D. in Physics in 1995, he subsequently took a postdoctoral position at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, investigating laser-induced molecular vibrations of high explosives under an AFOSR program.
(AFOSR is the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. This is their website.)
In 1996, he was offered a National Research Council Fellowship at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. investigating novel solid-state lasers for the Department of the Navy.
In 1997, he was recruited by the Air Force Research Laboratory to build an Ultrafast Laser Physics Lab to investigate nonlinear optics, novel ultrafast spectroscopic methods, and nonlinear micro/nano-fabrication techniques for the Air Force.
In 2003 he was offered a program manager position in the National Reconnaissance Office, and converted to CIA in 2005.
In 2007, he was assigned as Chief Technology Officer in a joint CIA-DIA program office, where he later became division chief as a DIA officer. (I think this might be where Grusch's comments in the video below come into play.)
In 2010 he was asked to serve as the space control portfolio manager for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Space and Intelligence, Office of the Secretary of Defense.
(Christopher Mellon worked for the Office of the Secretary of Defense from January 1997 to December 2002.)
In 2012 he returned to DIA, and served as the Defense Intelligence Officer for Scientific and Technical Intelligence, serving as the Department of Defense’s counterpart to the National Intelligence Manager for Science and Technology until 2016. Towards the end of his tenure as DIO/S&TI, Dr. Kirkpatrick served on special assignment to the Principal Deputy Director National Intelligence leading the Intelligence Community’s support to the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center.
From 2016 to his current assignment, Dr. Kirkpatrick served in a variety of no-fail roles including Deputy Director of Intelligence, US Strategic Command;
Director, National Security Strategy, National Security Council;
Deputy Director of Intelligence and the DNI Representative for USSPACECOM. The USSPACECOM Intelligence Enterprise was the fifth organization he has been the IC lead for establishment.
His most recent assignment was as Chief Scientist at DIA’s Missile and Space Intelligence Center.
After retiring as the Director of AARO, Kirkpatrick immediately went to the Oak Ridge Laboratory, which, along with Wright-Patterson and Area 51, is directly at the heart of the UFO history and mystery.
Here is his bio listed at Oak Ridge's website.

2024.05.19 07:28 United_Ad_867 way too in-depth personal album rating, review, + rankings

(mods took this down and said put it in discussion, but i can’t put it there because it’s too long i think. if it needs to get taken down i understand! but ive seen others up so im giving it another try)
doing a relisten as I write this :) ratings all /100
overcompensate - 78: incredible song on its own. people have been saying ALL the singles feel separate from this album, but i think that’s just because they’ve been out much longer. OC is the only song that truly feels separate. that being said, absolute banger and still a crazy way to start an album/live shows
next semester - 80: this was my most listened to song of all time three days after it dropped. love the 2000s punk vibes. that ending sells it for me. absolutely beautiful. was really surprised when paul did the “production peek” and there’s not a single guitar on this song😟
backslide - 82: looking back, this song gave us a huge look into what a lot of the album would sound like. dry delivery, passionate chorus, and filled to the brim with weird noises and synths. this one feels underrated because i know a lot of people aren’t a huge fan, but this became my favorite of the three singles after a few listens. that chorus is beautiful. the end is so weird too but it scratches my brain. thank you paul meany
midwest indigo - 93: that second verse is probably on of my favorites in their whole discography. CLOUD COVERAGE MATCHED MY OUTFIT TO A KNIFE (heavily processed scream) I REQUESTED COUNCIL WITH THE COUNSELOR AND HE CANCELED TWICE‼️‼️‼️ that’s all i have to say.
routines in the night - 95: my favorite here on first listen. the chorus is so catchy and the vocal production is so clean. i like the slightly autotuned second verse. his flow is great and the tricks they’re doing to the vocals is so cool. the prechorus on this song is also beautiful. “the space between a painful reminder and a terrible dream” the writing on this record is amazing
vignette - 100: masterpiece of a song. feels like im getting pushed out of a plane. i could not BELIEVE that chorus when i first heard it. one of tyler’s best falsettos and maybe best recorded vocal performances. it all feels very self titled, but if it were produced by modern twenty one pilots. im so glad they’re using real (or at least very convincing) string sections.
the craving - 72: beautiful love song. none of the previous album love songs were quite as “real” as this one. truly feels like the intersection between personal struggle, insecurity, and unrelenting love for another person. i’m a little iffy on some of the vocal deliveries and it does slow down the album a bit. however, after i listen to the album more, i feel like it’s a much needed slowdown and the placement is really thoughtful.
lavish - 75: this song is ridiculous. it grows on me every single time i listen. that beat truly does feel like a million dollars and it’s hilarious hearing tyler rap over it. i didn’t like the chorus initially but again, after more listens, it works so well and it adds so much to the song. and then of course there’s the proctologist line. it took me so long to get it and even now i only have a vague understanding of what it could mean😭 either way it makes me laugh every time and im grateful for the inclusion
navigating - 85: ive seen the next semester music video so many times that the bass lick from navigating has been drilled into my head as the start of next semester. now it’s forever tied to that song and it’s so jarring hearing that part here. anyways this song ROCKS. feels super interpol to me. the drumming on this whole album is fantastic and a step up from previous albums but josh stands out here like he never really has. i can’t wait to hear this live and see josh going crazy on the drums. MY OH MY‼️
snap back - 55: i think the thing that gets me is that silly mallet synth in the background. it’s not bad, but it pulls me out of the song and album a little bit. i actually like tyler’s vocal delivery a lot, but unlike most of the vocal tricks on the album, the weird panning high shifted vocals don’t do it for me. all of the sung parts that occur in the first minute and 55 seconds kinda bother me. the song really gets better for me after 1:55, but it isn’t enough to save it for me. i really hope that this one grows on me because there are a ton of cool ideas.
oldies station - 70: people were saying this sounded like AJR. i was confused until i heard those crowd vocals😔 i am not a fan of the way that was executed and it unfortunately does feel very AJR. i thought it was going to be repeated a ton of times, but i was happily very incorrect about that. the song builds out beautifully, and even with the crowd vocals part, this song is written incredibly. was the only song besides maybe next semester to have me holding back tears.
at the risk of feeling dumb - 75: was afraid seeing the name of this song when the tracklist was revealed. it felt a little immature? but knowing what it’s actually about puts me at ease. the intro feels a little silly for the subject matter, but the song it builds into what i was hoping for by the end of the first verse. i love the sentiment and i think it’s communicated perfectly in this song
paladin strait - 83: the only thing holding this back from a 100 is the fact that the bird part wasn’t 6 and a half minutes instead of one minute😔 but for real, JOSH SINGS? i think. i saw someone point it out in the discord, and it sounds like his voice in the “making my way towards you”. i hope that’s him, i really do. i wish this song was really 6 and a half minutes of material instead of 5, but we can only dream of the true 6.5 minute song. its a great closer to this album, but im a sucker for piano ballads so i wish there was at least a little bit of piano in here, but that goes with what i think about the lore. i will elaborate in full album review.
personal ranking:
  1. routines
  2. vignette
  3. midwest indigo
  4. backslide
  5. lavish
  6. navigating
  7. next semester
  8. overcompensate
  9. paladin strait
  10. the craving
  11. at the risk of feeling dumb
  12. oldies station
  13. snap back
i love this album. it’s not trench, but it doesn’t have to be. i’m still a trench lover until the day i die, but this album has so many different ideas whereas trench had a cohesive sound palette. the reason i bring up trench at all is because so many people are comparing the two when i feel like they fill their own roles. anyways, this is an incredible collection of songs and i feel like josh truly gets a chance to shine here. tyler’s vocal performances are better than they ever have been, recording wise, and i think everything from the album cover, to the tracklist, to the singles were executed really well. one thing is for certain, this is not the end of the lore. only two songs were directly tied to the lore, being the first and last. whether it’s through videos, singles, concerts, or even another album, i can’t wait to see the true end to it all. personally, i wouldn’t like the non-lore songs to become videos that actually help end it all. it was fine on SAI with saturday and the outside, but i preferred lore related songs with lore related videos like on trench. i don’t believe there will be a double album just because they’ve already done all the promotion, music videos, sold physical copies, and are touring THIS album for the coming year. the only thing they could do immediately in terms of new music would be to release clancy 2 or clancy deluxe with the same aesthetic, but that’s no fun. i simply think tyler and josh are lying and we’ll get another album that’s more lore heavy. paladin strait does not feel like an ending to even the story this album is trying to set up. closer? yes. but not an ending. it’s very transitional and i’d be genuinely surprised if it doesn’t lead into a future album. especially with blurryface popping up at the end. if you got this far, thank you for listening to the ramblings.
album rating: 84/100

2024.05.19 07:26 AshSystem Is there a subreddit for photos that could be album covers?

One of my favorite silly image types, images you just need to slap a PARENTAL CONTENT ADVISORY on and it instantly looks like the sort of thing you'd see on the cover of a rock album. Feels like the sort of niche this site has.

2024.05.19 07:23 Eastern-Ability-2894 John Kreese is the most tragic character in the whole Karate Kid/Cobra Kai Universe.

John Kreese is the most tragic character in the whole Karate Kid/Cobra Kai Universe.
In the Karate kid and Cobra Kai Universe, John Kreese has the most tragic life story ever. In my opinion he is also one of the most tragic characters in film/tv history.
Kreese grew up without a father and had a mentally ill mother who sadly killed herself when he was a young man of only 19 years old, leaving young Kreese to fend for himself. To add more tragedy to an already tragic loss, he was constantly bullied by others because of his mother's actions. Eventually things in life started to look more promising for Kreese as one day in 1965 he met a beautiful young lady named Betsy while working as a bus boy at a diner. After witnessing Betsy's then boyfriend David abusing her, Kreese stepped in to save her, beating up David and his friend, Kreese then offered Betsy a ride home which she happily accepted with a big smile to Kreese.
For the next couple of years Kreese and Betsy dated, they adored each other so much and were madly in love, eventually he left her and headed to basic training for the US Army. Kreese said his goodbyes to the love of his life, Betsy, along with a few kisses, promising to not only return home to her but also that he'll come back a hero. By 1968 Kreese was already in Vietnam serving, he quickly gained a reputation for basically having a death wish, a reputation which caught the attention of Captain George Turner who was putting together a Special Task Force Unit, after meeting Turner, Kreese joined his unit, choosing his good friends Ponytail and Twig, aka Terry Silver to also join the group. Captain Tuner was a Korean War veteran who learned Tang Soo-Do from Master Kim Sun-Yung of South Korea. Turner taught Kreese, Silver and Ponytail many aspects of warfare including hand to hand combat. During that time though Turner would often berate Kreese for his inability to shed his humanity during physical confrontations, as Kreese was still fighting with mercy. During a sparring match with Turner, Kreese landed a good punch on him, but he briefly lowered his guard which Turner immediately took advantage of, sending Kreese to the ground. Turner went on to explain that it's either kill or be killed and that you never have second thoughts or hestiate and you show your enemy no mercy.
Soon after Kreese pulled out a picture of Betsy, a photograph which she had sent him earlier on and while looking at her photo, Kreese said that he'll be home soon, but tragically that would never happen as Betsy was already gone by that point, passing away in a fatal car accident. Though Captain Turner did receive a letter that said she had tragically passed away but he never told Kreese or even gave him that letter. Later on during a mission to eliminate a Viet Cong encampment, Silvers radio erupted, giving away their position to the enemy, Turner ordered Kreese to detonate the explosive charge which Ponytail had just set but Kreese hesitated as Ponytail was still in the blast radius. Ponytail tried to run away but was caught by some Vietnamese soldiers who knocked him to the ground. The rest of the unit was then captured as well with Ponytail being executed right in front of them soon after. For the next year or so Kreese, Silver and Turner plus the rest of the unit were subjected to numerous methods of torture including being locked inside a bamboo cage and being forced to fight one another to the death on a platform suspended above a pit full of snakes, all for the amusement of the Vietnamese soldiers.
Sometime in 1969, Captain Turner and Terry Silver were chosen to fight each other but Kreese decided to take Silver's spot and fight their Captain instead. Turner who still hadn't forgiven Kreese for his actions in getting all of them captured cruelly revealed and even mocked that Betsy had died in a car accident. The news of her death profoundly impacted Kreese as he was clearly so devastated, initially dropping to one knee in pain, trying to process what he had just heard. Captain Turner early on in the fight had the upper hand on Kreese who was still very distraught by the news of Betsy's tragic death, but Kreese then became very enraged and defeated Captain Turner. Kreese showed his Captain no mercy by stomping Turner's hand as he was hanging by the platform suspended above the snake pit, Captain Turner fell to his death in a pit full of snakes. After the Captain's demise and still standing on the platform, Kreese immediately closed his eyes and let out a breath, in that moment Kreese was reborn, the kind hearted man with compassion and mercy had died with his love Betsy and now Kreese was starting to embrace a much darker side of himself, This is where Kreese first adopted his Strike First, Strike Hard and No Mercy moto. Kreese then freed the rest of the unit including the young Terry Silver who hugged Kreese and promised him a life long debt for saving his life. Kreese would also go on to save Silver more times between 1969 and 1975.
After his victory over the snake pit, Kreese and the other surviving members of the unit earned berets as well as battlefield commissions as officers in the US Army. Kreese would continue to Serve in the US Army Green Berets, earning the rank of Captain himself before leaving the military in 1975. Kreese also became the US Army's Karate Champion, a title he held from 1970 to 1972. He returned home to the valley very hardened and embittered by the numerous bereavements he suffered during the war, especially with the loss of his beloved Betsy. Soon after returning home in 1975 Kreese would co-found Cobra Kai Dojo alongside Terry Silver, teaching new generations the way of the fist and the same creed that Turner had once taught him, and the rest is history as we know it.
So Kreese is definitely the most tragic character in all of Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. He was a very good and kind hearted man that was twisted by unfathomable amounts of pain, loss, suffering and extreme violence from war. All Kreese wanted was to live a normal life, to serve his country and be a hero, to marry and have a family of his own one day with the only woman he ever truly cared about and really loved, Besty, but all Kreese got in the end was losing everything and everybody, leaving him with absolutely nothing. So Kreese shredded his humanity and buried all emotions deep, he stopped feeling when his Besty died, overtime building himself into the completely merciless, heartless and vicious karate sensei he is today.
His very sad and tragic backstory also helps us understand why in Kreese's mind, there is no middle ground, that survival has to mean the absolute defeat or death of your enemy, whether it's on the streets or in competition, even in the dojo, survival in life depends on that kill or be killed mentality which was psychologically engraved into Kreese through the brutality of war, his Captains cruel teachings and the very tragic/ profounding losses Kreese suffered in his life, the most impactful and damaging of all being the death of his sweetheart Betsy.
Though today John Kreese is a very cruel, vicious, merciless and cold hearted person, i still feel a great pity for him.

2024.05.19 07:11 BeubtheDemonSlayer [Spoiler] An Epiphany on the Whispering Hillock

In what many consider to be one of the most controversial and confusing choices within The Witcher 3, the story goes that a spirit trapped under a tree has recently awoken and is slaughtering innocence throughout the swamps of Velen. as the player, we don’t know too much about it, since the only sources of information regarding the topic are unreliable. However, one of the many books you can pick up throughout any random shelf in the world sheds some light on this odd encounter…
Titled “She Who Knows“, it tells the story of the Lady of the Wood. She creates three daughters out of dirt and water, and rules over the swamps of Velen with benevolence, so long as sacrifices are made each spring in their honor. The mother, however, slowly grows mad, and the daughters took it upon themselves to save the destruction, nearing their land. The next spring that passed, the daughter sacrifice their mother and buried her under a tree. It didn’t end there, however, as the mothers. It didn’t end there, however, as the mothers immortal soul was trapped thrashing in a powerless rage. It would later become known as the Whispering Hillock.
If this sounds familiar, it’s probably because it is! The Whispering Hillock is the location the Crones send you to deal with a problem of theirs’ in exchange for information on Ciri’s whereabouts. When you arrive, you meet with the spirit that claims to only be a druid: one that protected the land, and was dethroned by the Crones. If you free it, it tears across the countryside, adding to its body count apart from those around its tree- in what appears to be an unprovoked vengeance. Given the context that this book provides, however, it seems reasonable to piece together the two stories as one, assuming her vengeance was against the people she used to protect but was usurped from. Given that, it would seem the spirit trapped beneath the Whispering Hillock is indeed the Lady of the Wood, as written about in “She Who Knows” the original guardian of Velen, and mother of the Crones.
If you go on the Witcher wiki and look for “The Ghost in the Tree”, it confirms this theory as it states the spirit’s aliases to include: “Lady of the Wood”, “She Who Knows”, and “The Mother”. I highly doubt I’m the first person to figure this out, but wanted to share nonetheless for those who may not have known. This is only my 2nd play through, but I love all the little details and such like this you pick up as you go along with the foreknowledge of a prior run.

2024.05.19 07:08 NinjaSimone What synths was Alan Parsons using in the 1980s?

I know that the APP was all over the DX7 in the 1980s (or more likely, a Yamaha TX816 with rack-mounted TF1s, tomato tomAHto), and their Stereotomy album could have been alternatively titled "Hey, listen to our new TX816."
But I'd love to understand what synth they used as the pad for Chinese Whispers:
https://open.spotify.com/track/4zljYUtoADHUfQrbDSuRg3?si=1fe450e06ea84e60
My second guess would have been the Korg M1 since it was the other hot synth of the 1980s, but it didn't arrive until three years later.

2024.05.19 06:52 TealBlueLava Can I paint strip the whole house?

Hey folks. As the title suggests, I’m itching to just strip all the walls and doorframes of my entire house. I bought it several years ago as a fixer-upper. The roof had leaked while it was on the market, so they had a pro come in to fix the damage and installed a whole new roof. But the previous owners (who were crappy landlords that flipped tenants every year) used a paid-under-the-table crew of guys to slap a coat of paint on everything and install new flooring. (Side note. When they installed the vinyl flooring on the first floor, they didn’t take off the baseboards. They put the flooring down, then roughly put quarter-round at all the edges, that doesn’t sit flush and they didn’t caulk.)
I already know I’m going to de-popcorn all the ceilings. I’ve seen videos about putting mud over it and floating it out smooth. No. I want a clean surface and I want to see what I’m working with so I know if I need to redo any seam tape or other stuff.
As for the walls, well… I’ve included some photos. These are just the master bedroom. You can see they did a stellar job. 🙄 The walls were forest green in the sales listing before the roof replacement and wall paint, so who knows how many layers of paint it took to cover that up. And they didn’t bother pulling off the decorative paper border at the top edge; just painted over it.
I see tons of people saying “There’s absolutely no reason to strip your walls” but I’m thinking this case might be the exception. I’ve got painted-over paper border, probably 7 layers of paint from the 12+ rental re-dos of the nasty landlords who ran this place before I bought it as my home, and I would really feel better with fresh clean walls to start anew.
What do you guys think?

2024.05.19 06:51 epiccabbage123 review of every professor i've had at BU

now senior so i thought id take a look back. most TFs or lab instructors missing bc i don't remember them and never attended most office hours.
Courtney Martin - FY101 freshman fall. utterly useless class (was an undeclared major so took it hoping to get some guidance, basically got nothing out of it.) very chill instructor though, no issues there, just waste of time.
Scott Possiel - WR120 freshman fall and WR152 freshman spring, grad student teacher. pretty chill and class was interesting (mediterranean religion [roman religions]), learned strong amount about writing. no complaints, hope he's on to great things.
Alexander Nikolaev - CL/208LX208 freshman fall. awesome class on zoom, funny and knowledgeable dude, learned so much about about indo-european linguistics, and sparked basically all my interest about linguistics. assignments were fun and refreshing. one of my favorite professors at BU despite only having had one class with him, unfortunately he disappeared (left?) after 2020 and I have no idea why, nor did any of my classmates. lucky to have had his last BU class in first semester of freshman year.
Christine Papadakis - CS112 freshman fall. her ratemyprofessor 1.9 score says enough, bad at explaining topics, strange class vibes, pretty unhelpful. seems like a nice person though. main reason i did not continue with compsci after 1 semester at BU, class wasn't too difficult (got B+ and could have done better if i tried harder) but it was so utterly boring it was the dread of every week and genuinely difficult to find any will to do work for it. lectures were insufferably boring, especially on replay when studying. avoid her at all costs.
Edward Loechler - first half of BI107 freshman fall, BI108 freshman spring? (i remember him and spilios teaching some class together or two part or something). chill old man vibes, class was solid and well taught. don't remember anything else except no issues. recommend.
Kathryn Spilios - second half of BI107 freshman fall. chill professor, class was solid and well taught. don't remember anything else except no issues. recommend.
Leah Kronenberg - CL102 freshman spring. awesome professor, very kind and good at teaching. recommend
thomas keyes - CH101 freshman spring. worst professor i had in all of BU hands down. so utterly useless and incompetent his syllabus was barely even divided into paragraphs, just a spam wall of text. lectures monotonous and uninteresting, bad at answering questions, mean to students, generally seemed like he was on the verge of suicide or homicide or both at any given moment. thankfully he retired so i do not have to say avoid him at all costs.
special shoutout to Alyssa Kranc - TF for CH101, grad student. actual angel sent from heaven to guide the class thru the horror that was CH101 with thomas keyes. great at explanations, patient, and brought good vibes. i actually really liked chemistry and it was only thru Alyssa's help and lab review meeting things that I learned anything in this class and got an A. Hope she is onto greater things and epic research.
jane x. luu - AS102 sophomore fall. chill professor, kinda made class easier as time went along when she realized nobody really gave a shit about the subject and was just there for hub or get chance to look thru telescope. actually discovered some really awesome things in her research (the kuiper belt). was visiting professor so dont think she'll be back.
brandon jones - CL101 sophomore fall. awesome professor, good lectures, chill guy. recommend.
john thornton - HI175 sophomore fall. boringest history lecturer ive ever had, quiet so had to sit in the front to even hear him (maybe cuz covid masks everything was quieter). chill guy, easy class, probably cooler to talk to at office hours than for survey history class. recommend.
cathal nolan - HI284 sophomore fall. Lowkey kinda pompous guy, but classes were always insightful and really felt like attending a speech notsomuch a lecture. history of war class was one of the few classes where i felt like i really gained wisdom and not just knowledge, but also fell short of my expectations at the same time if that makes sense. pretty easy if you like history / are good at writing. needs to learn how to use slides though lol, windows photo app on USB stick photos can only last so long. recommend.
Christopher McMullen - FY102 sophomore spring. genuinely do not remember a single thing about this class or professor. pretty sure we unironically did a meyers personality test thing, hilarious waste of time. or that was in FY101.
hannah culik - CL237 sophomore spring. very kind professor, learned a lot in the class. 0 official dealines so u can turn in everything late but i do not recommend leaving it all to the last minute. pretty political charged, but i think in an engaging way. she left BU but i would recommend if she were still here.
simon payaslian - HI176 sophomore spring. felt like high school class but i guess that's how history survey courses go. chill dude, kinda tough grader? dumb assignments. average lecturer. recommend.
bruce schulman - HI231 sophomore spring. very kind professor, i turned in my final research paper like a week late LMFAO and he still accepted it (with some completely justified points off for lateness of course). good lecturer. recommend.
Christopher Daly - HI231 sophomore spring. kind professor chill lecturer some course as schulman (double professors). retired, otherwise would recommend.
Alexis Peri - HI200 sophomore spring, HI272 junior fall - one of the best professors at BU hands down. kind but pushes you to truly learn. writing excelled under her and i felt i improved my overall skills as a student / scholar in every way. she grades easier as class goes on. genuinely proud to have achieved in A in both her courses, pushed myself to get there. maybe a bit too much class discussion for my tastes though, i don't really enjoy sharing out. recommend.
shoutout to Margot Rashba, TF for HI272. helpful explainer since I couldn't go to professor Peri's office hours due to time conflict. hope she is onto great things.
christopher Backman - HI101 junior fall. chill professor, class pretty boring but funny lecturer. completely ghosted my email sent in next semester discussing my idea for senior thesis lol, and wasn't at the office hours listed on website, idk what happened. apparently went on leave after some controversy regarding speech. so yeah lol. recommend.
Stephanie Nelson - CL161 junior fall. awesome professor, kind and fun class. recommend
Timothy Clark - CL162 junior spring, CL322 disorganized and seems like he didn't really care about the class tbh, but overall chill guy. really likes parthia and didn't really care about Rome at all. dumb assignments at times, but he did have no issue with me consistently missing a language class day to to schedule conflict without issue, which I appreciated. don't recommend.
eugenio menegon - HI363 senior fall. hard to explain but going to class just felt... uncomfortable every time? does lot of cold-calling. lecture was kinda boring, didn't learn very much, felt more like a high school survey class of china than a 300 level class on ancient China. covers way too long a time period in too little detail. dude seems pretty chill though don't recomment.
christopher ell - CL300 senior fall. very boring lecturer but he clearly does try to make it funny, which is appreciated. chill guy, some leniency on scheduling and assignments, very clear about all his instructions and overall taught well. very fair and no conflicts at all. enjoyed his class. recommend.
spiridon-iosif capotos - CL261 senior fall, grad student teacher. hilarious, deadpan dry humor. fun class, learned a lot of greek, hope he is onto great things. recommend
simon anderson - SY101 senior spring. chill guy, class not the most useful but was alright. not really that indepth, prob waste of time could've learned everything reading online guides. instructor was fine though, no issues.
hannah kloster - CL262 senior spring, grad student teacher. awesome and kind instructor, very fun class, learned a lot despite having no interest in Greek poetry. hope she is onto great things. recommend.
jilene chua - HI500 senior spring. very kind professor, chill class and great vibes, but too much discussion for my taste. new professor to BU, had her on her second or third semester teaching as professor ever (i think); class was kinda unorganized or ad hoc at times. will only get better as time goes on. recommend.
stephen scully - hi406 senior spring. no interest in the subject (iliad translations) when i joined class and minimal interest in the subject as I leave the class (and BU). chill professor, but grades harshly and requires a lot of writing. cold calls often. class was also quite unorganized for entire first half. in terms of material, honestly a lot of stuff in class felt quite arbitrary in understanding (as is probably the case with most literature classes, which i did not take outside of this). recommend if you really love classical literature / mythology / philology (or anything humanities), don't recommend for classical history (or anything social sciences).
Rui Hua - HI364 junior fall, HI370 junior spring, HI553 senior fall. the most energetic, fun, chill professor i've had at BU, every lecture was a blast and even if i went to class in a bad mood it was impossible to leave without a smile on my face. took us on field trips to relevant destinations when possible. I had the first 3 classes he's ever taught as a professor ever (I think), and it definitely showed bc they were somewhat unorganized or ad hoc. but i am sure his teaching will only get better as time progresses, learned a lot and had a great time in all his classes, he does cover some overlapping material in them so if u take them u might repeat some stuff. also super lenient on deadlines but i do not encourage delaying all of them to the last minute as I did like an idiot. easy classes overall, but if you like the subject he definitely is encouraging for those who want to learn more. recommend.
Loren J. Samons - CL321 junior fall, CL303 junior spring, CL202 senior spring. best professor i've ever had at BU, hilarious, funnest lectures of all time, learned so much, and brings so much old man sardonic energy to every class. CL303 fall of roman empire another class where I felt I genuinely attained wisdom and not just knowledge. assigned readings are some of the few I actually did. class might be difficult if not ur a good writer / not a social sciences person, but u'll definitely improve if you take the effort to do so, otherwise easy class got As in all of them. very straightforward. recommend.
feel free to ask individual questions about any of these professors / instructors in comments.

2024.05.19 06:49 Kauaiishbino I just realized im not insane or crazy, just need time processing my emotions.

Recently, I got “broken up” with by someone I was talking to, which I was hoping would become a relationship.
At first, I was feeling salty because we had been sexting and sending pictures prior to this, so I felt that I was being vulnerable for no reason, but I just went in my photo album and saw pictures of him and I during FaceTime. Luckily, these photos were live so I can heard my laughter and see his cute smile and cute face. It made me realize how happy we were during those moments and how amazing he was, he barely had red flags, I’d say they were just flaws he could work on.
The best way to explain his flaw is that he’s like rick sanchez(from rick and morty), so damn smart (he loved science and physics) but when it comes to him being wrong or in an emotional situation, he can be stubborn and self-absorbed. We stopped talking because I ss messages of him and I talking about how I felt that he could’ve told me he didn’t want me before I was vulnerable to him for my journal to process more on how I felt. (I didn’t think it was a big deal because I thought we trusted each other) He didn’t like that I did and blocked me, I honestly kept trying to contact him to get him to understand that I wasn’t going to show anyone but he didn’t want to hear it.
It’s been about a week or so, I miss him, I miss hearing him be a nerd, I miss his corny jokes, I miss hearing him complain, but I understand that he doesn’t want to talk so I have nothing to do but to respect that. I truly do appreciate the time of laughter and bonding we had even if it was short-lived.
I really really like him and thank him. <33

2024.05.19 06:48 jasonmlv Why hasnt fantano reviewed any alice in chains? Has he ever spoken on them before?

Sometimes I feel very confused by fantanos lack of reviews for specific artists. Like, I can't name any more than just Alice in Chains off the top of my head, but they definitely exist. I know he mentioned one of the worst AIC albums in a YUNOREVIEW, but it's kinda odd he's never done a review of "Dirt," "Jar of Flies," the self-titled album, or even "Black Gives Way to Blue." With such a massive array of music he's covered, I kinda figured he would have mentioned one of the good AiC projects at some point. But even in his short reviews, I haven't seen any mention, even just in passing. I know he's a pretty avid Nirvana defender, and I assume he would love some AiC, so it's kinda odd he hasn't.
What do you think of AiC? Has he mentioned them somewhere I missed before? And do you think/know what he would think of "Jar of Flies," "Dirt," and the self-titled album?
Also im currious what other artists he hasnt really reviewed or spoken on that are reletivly big artists.

2024.05.19 06:47 vlskh First timer looking for advice

I got the XT-5. This is my first mirrorless camera. I was a long time user of the D800e and stuck with it without switching to the the mirrorless nikons because it wasn't anything special. Then on a trip I saw the XT-4 and the output it was delivering out of the box. I was tempted to get the XT-4 but my wife surprised me for my birthday with the XT-5. Took me a good couple of days to figure out the dials myself since I like to experiment with the dials and understand what they do. The aperture being shifted to the lens was a big googly.
So here's my use case. My cameras get maximum usage about once a year for trips to the forest. I only have the 16-80mm kit lens for now.
Any advice on what lens I should look at? The 100-400mm fujinon looks super tempting. The Sigma 150-600 is cheaper but based on past experience on the nikon, it wasn't as good as the nikkor 200-500.
Any other lens? I'm seeing myself use the camera for regular kids photography a lot more than my phone because of the ease of getting my photos fully processed and into my album almost instantly

2024.05.19 06:12 crom_77 Johnny Dyani, an underrated jazz great

I don't like most jazz, I find most of it to be too smooth, formulaic, overproduced. I crave rawness in jazz. I've been exploring african jazz artists lately, and landed upon Johnny Dyani. Though it may be dated, I enjoy the rawness and veracity he brings. I like to edit photos with perhaps a shot of tequila and this playing in the background. Most excellent.

2024.05.19 05:41 calwestcoast Passed my A+ Core 1 last week. Taking the Core 2 in 11 days.

As the title states, I passed my Core 1 with a 700 last week. I took a class at a community college in Spring 23 and just studied at home on and off for a week before taking Core 1. I bought the vouchers at a deep discount nearly a year ago and wasn't even going take them because I wasn't looking to go into IT, I just needed the units and it sounded interesting. But I started thinking a technical certification would look good on my resume so I decided to take them before the vouchers expire in June. I was honestly surprised I passed. When I did, I decided to book Core 2 before my voucher expires. Got an appointment with 3 days to spare, though I'll have to drive a little bit to get there.
Anyway, cool sub you guys got here. Wish me luck on Core 2.

2024.05.19 05:36 OccasionImaginary644 What should I do for not being picked as MOH

So about 2 weeks ago my best friend (22F) from middle school got engaged to her college boyfriend. Which is very exciting and I’m (23F) very happy for her since we’ve known for a while she’d be engaged this spring. I was the first person she called to announce her engagement and we cried / screamed on the phone about it.
Growing up, despite her moving states away, we always stayed in contact / had FaceTime calls. We cried, laughed, and shared everything together. Since about 3 years ago, our phone topics changed to talk more about marriage / engagement. She’s an only child, so she told me for a while (let’s say at least 2 years) that I would be her maid of honor as her best friend of 10+ years. Naturally, as a type A person, I started mentally preparing for the role under this assumption. I only took it seriously when she got engaged where, during finals, I was drafting budget sheets, brand deals, bachelorette party details, etc to make her day perfect because I thought the role was mine.
As you can probably tell, a week later, the day before i graduated which she knew, on a phone call she asked me to be a bridesmaid. Not her maid of honor. She said she picked someone else because they are physically closer to her and they have been more part of her relationship. She also said I was a second choice. She also asked me to help with budgeting because I’m great with spreadsheets. In that time I said yes to being a bridesmaid bc I was in shock but still want to be part of her big day. But I told her no to helping with the budgeting because, from my understanding and research, that is the job of the MOH and I’m not going to do part of the job of a MOH without the title. This was all in one 7 min phone call btw where there wasn’t really any time to process. More happened during the call but that was the meat of it. She just seemed rushed and a bit dismissive of my feelings.
Now, I live in Pittsburgh and she’s in Nashville. This is also our very first experiences with weddings / bridesmaid situations. Logically, her reasonings are somewhat fair in my opinion. I also jumped the gun under the assumption that I would be her MOH and everyone I told said I’m very likely going to be her MOH. So she doesn’t “owe me” anything there bc I did work she didn’t ask for.
Overall, I’m feeling everything under the sun. I feel gutted and I feel like crying every time I think about it. Mostly because I feel betrayed. I feel like I was groomed into a role or that she threw 10 years of friendship down the toilet because I’m not physically there and being told I’m 2nd hurts like hell. I don’t feel like someone who’s 2nd would be the first person she told her engagement to, but here we are. I feel like she rushed the situation (she plans on getting married in the fall of 2025), bc long distance MOH can work, we have FaceTimes, texting, and digital documents. Now that I’m a grad I’ll have more money to visit and spend on her wedding as well. At the very least I feel like she could have had 2 MOH to split the work instead of a false binary as she isnt necessarily the most traditional person. There are ways to make a long distance MOH work. Or that it’s more than just planning, which we both know I’m excellent at, but I can handle her family well since I’ve known them for forever. Which is important bc she has struggled, at times, with her relationship with her mom. Granted ik I can still do that as a bridesmaid. This is a lot of word vomit and idk the point but I’m upset, angry, and confused. Overall just going through the stages of grief. I haven’t talked to her since besides when she congratulated me on graduating, she hasn’t reached out (not that she has too). I don’t want to reach out atm because I don’t want to say anything I will regret if I’m this emotional.
But more or less, with my clouded thinking, I don’t know if I want to be a bridesmaid or attend the wedding. This is dramatic, I know, but I’m really hurt and not thinking straight. Or if I still take on the role of a bridesmaid can I not take the box she wants to send? Bc I feel like I would feel upset and uncomfortable with the box and knowing that I don’t feel as important or important at all as just a bridesmaid. Or being reminded of the rocky state of our friendship (from my pov) and how she sees me as 2nd. The only thing I can think of to do is to have a honest conversation with her of what I’m feeling, but even then what will come out of that? Besides maintaining good communication between us. She can’t go back on her 1st choice MOH, not that I want her too bc if she did I would still feel bad because it isn’t genuine. I’m just sad and at a total loss. I still value our friendship and I still want to be part of her wedding. I just feel like I’ll be resentful of the MOH. Any advice on how to move forward, should I accept the box and deal with it, or anything would be greatly appreciated. I haven’t dealt with something like this before and I feel awful on many aspects. :/
TL;DR- My best friend from 7th grade picked someone else to be their maid of honor because they’re closer physically to her / more involved in the relationship and I’m upset.

SharpByDesign Mini Tempest, S90v, Flipper, Bowie Blade, 80s CF: I'm the original owner, picked this up from Kaviso on the drop. While I love the look of this knife, I happen to prefer the front-flipper version better, so along this goes. This has been flipped around the house and at most has opened a bag of chips. Factory edge, solid lockup, beautiful blade, great action. These are superb knives. Comes with box, etc. This was $425 new, looking for $300.
Wehr Knives Allie-P: Picked this one up on the swap in excellent condition. This is a really cool little knife, but I'm finding that I like my small Seb just a bit more. This has been very lightly carried and used maybe a couple of times. Blade and scales are clean. Solid lockup, nice action. Centering might be just a hair off, but nothing major. Comes with pouch, etc. Asking $235. SOLD
Serge Knife Co Slip 7, nebula CF, M390: I'm the original owner. I've carried this a couple of times and opened a few packages with it. This one is beautifully done -- super light, thin/slicey blade, terrific action. Snaps into all positions with authority. There is a scuff on the blade from opening something and there is a bit of a roll in the edge from some blade rap (see photos). It's not bad, likely from how snappy the spring is. Would anticipate that it would go away after 1-2 sharpenings. This is a great little slipjoint. Comes with box, etc. Asking $110.
Thanks for looking!
