2024.05.18 20:18 MnorX Less low-end on balanced input . T7V
Hi, I have switched from RCA connection to a balanced one on my iFi Zen Dac and T7V's. I had a DIY cable 4.4mm to 2xTRS Jack, so I just bought TRS to XLR adapter and plugged in my monitors. It was immediately noticeable that there was a lack of low-end "meat" after a switch. I've been replacing cables multiple times and I just experience a fuller low end on RCA connector. Could it be because of low quality cable or an adapter?

2024.05.18 17:33 AssistancePretend668 Help me start to plan a quadraphonic setup for my parents
I'm leaving the country, may have a month or so of downtime, and can't bring my whole setup with me. It's basically going to spend forever in storage, and I can't bring myself to sell what's been years of saving money and picking speakers I love. I've never tried to assemble it all as one system (it's always been living room and office), but talking to my parents as making it a project in their house. They have an unused loft/bedroom that is definitely not acoustically perfectly. My mother especially likes her music for dancing, and both of them have been absolutely blown away when they've heard my past (properly tuned) setups. I want to [potentially] make something that would be a fun and challenging project for me, enjoyable for them, and maybe add value to their house if they ever sell to someone who wants this sort of thing. I can't imagine the cost of shipping all of this to South Africa being reasonable, so trying to give back to them for all they've done for me.
This is what I have to work with:
- 2x HEDD Type 20 Mk2 monitors
- 2x HEDD Type 07 Mk2 monitors
- 1x HSU VTF-3 Mk4 subwoofer
- 1x HSU VTF-1 Mk2 subwoofer
- miniDSP SHD DAC
- 12x 6" thick panels w/ Corning 703 fiberglass, pushed out another 2" with foam cubes to, in theory, use both sides of the panels to catch everything. I forget the dimensions I built the frames to, but they're roughly the size of a 5' tall human.
- DAC has Dirac w/ a miniDSP UMIK-1 mic and stand for measuring
- Will likely use their unused Mac Mini via USB as a source
I
do not know the exact room dimensions. I would guess 35'x20', but that's going off of a visual memory of the room. It is not square. There are stairs going down one side of the room, and out of respect for my parents, I may not be able to put panels on that side of the room because they'd have to look at them while in the kitchen/dining room at the bottom of the stairs. Room is carpeted.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I have to worry too much about cabling length as it'll be XLR to the monitors. However to run the subs off the SHD, I'd have to use the RCA connectors. I was thinking one sub on either side to minimize unbalanced cabling distance, with the larger sub to fill the room with lower frequencies (it goes down to about 16hz I think) and the smaller one to create a bit more punch. Tuning all the settings on those HSU subs together is going to be a really fun time lol. I've never done a sub crawl with 2 subs either.
While I'd absolutely love to do proper quadraphonic angles and put their Eames chair in the perfect spot, I have to accept that my mom does enjoy her dancing in that room so I'd have to all the Dirac and REW measurements/correction for a larger area. It's a fun project for me, but ultimately it has benefit especially her and not just make it a room for me while I'm indefinitely gone.
Where do I start?

2024.05.16 17:20 portrayu Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifier.
| Here is my review of the Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifier. https://preview.redd.it/xubrhhrk2t0d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98557e8478c6efae49c8fae6b35a9ae8ffd50ba4 I am not an audiophile or a tech expert so if you want in depth tech reviews, I’m sure you will find them online. What I am is a consumer, a bit of a technophile but mainly I love my music and want to enjoy it as best as I can afford to. My equipment is an old Denon X3800 H receiver which is configured as a 7.1 Dolby Atmos setup for cinema but for music I either use stereo or multichannel stereo. I haven’t found a lot of Atmos music around especially for my choice of music which tends toward rock, rock & roll and blues from the 50,60, 70 and 80’s which I like with the volume turned up. The speakers are even older Monitor Bronze which have served me well except for two Alteco Dali Atmos speakers of more recent vintage. My favourite setup in the summer is to take the main floor standers, a pair MONITOR AUDIO BRONZE B4 speakers: Frequency Response: 36Hz-22KHz, Sensitivity: 91dB, 6 Ohms,150W, outside to my BBQ area which I have wired to listen to them while relaxing. The Denon has served me well, but on occasion felt it was lacking in volume and definition. Thus, the Addition of a pair of Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifiers which Fosi kindly sent me to review. No, this review is not biased because of this. The Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifier is tiny, well for me anyway. It features controls for on/off/trigger audio and selection of XLR vs RCA inputs, for which I chose to use the XLR inputs as these are a common professional standard connector for noise reduction. Yes, totally new to me but you live and learn even at my age (69) besides I only had some cheap RCA cables and If I was going to purchase new, it might as well be quality. On unboxing I was delighted to see the size of these amps, amazingly small. Not so small are the power supplies of which there are two 48v 5amp. Which is a bit of a contrast to the amps. To need two there must be a reason for this I guess but I wonder if its possible to have one with separate rails for each amp. Production costs maybe? Or early days. I unplugged the speakers and connected them to the amps and put the XLR cables (RCA on the preamp side) in the front speaker preamp outputs on the Denon, powered everything up, selected stereo and played a Rolling Stones track from my iphone. Wow. I was blown away. I have never heard these speakers sound like this before. What I had been lacking in sound quality was there and the volume increase also. A pleasantly surprise from these small amps. I set them up next with the Audessy MultEQ app and have them configured to work with in my cinema setup. While not quite as distinctive they incorporate well and is a definite improvement on the previous setup but I think with a bit of fine tuning there is room for improvement. I recently returned the Fosi BT20A Pro Amp as it didn’t power the speakers as I hoped but I might buy another as it would have made a lovely preamp especially with its Bluetooth 5. I’m now a committed Fosi fan happily listening to my music better than before submitted by portrayu to BudgetAudiophile [link] [comments] |
2024.05.15 22:32 HillbillyEulogy Vintage Analog On A Budget: My DBX 900 Series Project.
TL;DR: DBX used to have their own version of the 500 series. If you're willing to put in some work, you can get some pretty badass old school analog vibes happening. Read on for the rest. Okay, so the 1970's had a three-way format war going between API's 500 Series, DBX's 900 Series, and Valley People's TR Series. All based on the same principle.
There are two reasons I wanted to build up a
DBX900 rack specifically. One is for their 903 compressor module. More specifically, the harder-to-find original "silver side" ones.
See that bronze loaf in the lower center? That's a DBX202C VCA. DBX later switched to using integrated circuits starting with the THAT2150 'chip'. That chip looks better on paper than the 202 - but my ears have always have had a soft spot for the DBX165 and the SSL E-Series bus compressor, both of which have the 202 as the gain control element.
The other reason? The
Aphex Dominator. Aphex jumped in on the 900 series with their own 'overbuilt' version,
the 9000. They had the Compellor, Expressor, the Dominator, etc. - all compact "cut down" versions of their full 1RU-sized big brothers. The Dominator was popular with AM/FM radio stations in the 1980's - it's a multiband compressor that can be quite transparent when used properly, or downright rude if you push it harder. It's like OTT, analog edition.
Okay, so I found a decent condition rack for $99 including shipping. Not exactly showroom condition, there was a ton of adhesive residue on the back. But whatever - this thing is almost as old as I am (and I am OLD). Grand total on four of the 903 compressor cards? $525 incl. shipping. The Dominators I was able to get at $137.50/ea. - all in solid working condition but in need of a recap and calibration.
Here's the less fun part - hooking it up. In the 1970's, it wasn't a given to see an XLR or TRS connection on the back of a piece of studio equipment. You'd often find these long
barrier strip terminals that you had to attach via "spade" or "shovel" connectors. Literally just crimped in place on the end of bare wire. So I needed to create two DB25 to spade connector snakes to plug this directly into my interface (eight modules, eight channels, makes sense, right?)
Luckily, I live up the street from
Dale Pro Audio in Jamaica, Queens. This place is nerd heaven. My sales guy punches in a few keys and says, "oh, we have a b-stock return on a Hosa db25 to db25 snake. You can have it for ten bucks.". That plus the connectors and I was out of there for under $30.
But trimming 48 individual wires (26AWG is like eight strands of copper, you have to be really careful removing the shielding), 48 times gingerly placing the wire on the connector and busting out the ol' ratchet crimp tool - it gets repetitive. And seriously, Hosa? Why do you have your own secret color code? There are no numbers on the
8 individual strands in those snakes.
Anyways, I finally get the
first four modules loaded in and the 900 rack into my interface. And the tedium of getting
all of those flathead screw terminals wrenched down. A little clickety, a little clackety, and they were in my plug-ins folder.
Here's a
quick and dirty demo. The music's literally just two loops I slapped up on the screen And as I said before, these need a serious going over, new caps, and some serious calibration. But they are great 'compression as an effect' compressors.
Why am I sharing? Because I get DM's from peeps on this sub a lot about wanting recommendations for a piece or two of 'real' analog hardware. By and large (but with exception), cheap and good can be something of a 'get'. But the 900 Series racks are a really good example of how to add some legit vintage gear to your setup without breaking your piggy bank.
Thanks for tuning in.

2024.05.14 17:19 KeifersIsAwesome Astatic D-104
A friend of mine picked up an Astatic D-104 as a gift for me. I'd love to try using it to see if I can get some neat effected vocals out of it for various purposes. Thing is, it has an old 2051f connector on it. Does anyone know if there is a way of adapting that into XLR, or would I need to just open the bottom and solder a new cable on? It has no internal amplifier.

2024.05.11 20:05 fpac Need a male XLR to bare wire connector for tally
Is there such a thing? I'm using a Ross Carbonite Ultra and the way the rack is wired is it has female XLR panel connections for tally.
Most of the rentals I receive have bare wires on the breakouts for tally.
If I had a male XLR to bare wire connectors, I'd be happy. If they have a way to screw in the wire, that'd be prefection.
TIA!

2024.05.11 04:08 thetolkiengeek Some question regarding combining DAC-out and Preamp-out using a mixer
Hey guys, I have a question. First, my current setup so you have an overview:
I have a record player connected to a phono preamp (Fosi Audio Box X3 Tube MM), which has an RCA-Output. I have a PC connected to a DAC (SMSL DO100). Both of them are currently plugged into a power amp (SMSL SH-9) so I can switch between the record player and the PC audio.
Now the problem. I'd like to hear the audio of both at the same time (aka mix the two signals). My current thought on how to achieve this is the following:
I buy a mixer (Yamaha MG06). I connect the preamp to the mixer with the help of an RCA to 6.35mm connector. Then I'll connect the DAC to the mixer using two XLR-cables (L/R). Then I connect the output of the mixer to my power amp.
The questions are: Will this work? Especially can the mixer use the two XLR (L/R) signals to correctly do its job? Will I lose audio quality? Did I overlook anything that is important?
Thanks guys and don't be too harsh on me ^^

Do we know why VCLX and other block batteries use XLR connectors specifically as opposed to some other connectors? Is it just because it's quick to disconnect and secure connection?
Also, Do the 4 pin power supply ports send data through one of the pins or something?

2024.05.10 00:11 MarsDrums Got my new Mixer today. It's setup, plugged in but I can't hear anything through the Monitoring...
Continuing From This Post I received the Model 24 today at around 11AM.
I've got it all hooked up. Mic cables are all plugged in, USB is connected, All of the mic inputs are registering on the mixers LEDs. Looks like everything is working. Except, I am plugged into the mixers Monitor 1 connector with my in ears and I cannot hear anything. The computer audio is set to go in and out if the mixer. I did this with the interface as well when I had that connected. That old interface is completely removed from the system. The USB cable I used for it, I'm using that with the TASCAM. lsblk does show the mixer is in there but now, I can barely hear anything coming through the monitor. I'll look through the manual again. I thought if I plugged in the mixer into the USB port it would use it the same way the computer used the interface before it.
Another issue I'm currently having is with OBS. I'm trying to setup OBS with the new mixer. I can see the meters going great in OBS but I can't hear anything with my in-ears. Also, if I open Spotify, that mixer stops feeding to OBS. It's like I turned off a switch or something.
I'm running ArcoLinux but I'm fine with finding a more audio friendly distro. I REALLY don't want to go back to Windows but if I do, it'll have to be Windows 7. That computer will not run 10 at all. It's a dog! 7 ran pretty good on it. That's how I got it with Windows 7 on it. But again, I REALLY don't want to put Windows anything on it. I'd like to keep it strictly Linux.
My goal, I want to hear computer audio (Spotify) mixed with my drums through the mixer... IF that's possible. (I think It should be). I might have to connect the in-ears into another port maybe? IDK. I'm baffled at this point.
EDIT: So, I was watching a couple of videos today on the outputs on this mixer and one of them was talking about the Main and the Control Outputs and he briefly mentioned that the Sub Output was supposed to go to the sound card... BINGO!!! That's what I needed to hear. So I found a Y cable with the 2 1/4" connectors on one end and a XLR connector on the other end. So I needed a 1/8" on the other end for the sound card. I had to use a female XLR to 1/4" connector then a 1/4" to 1/8" converter. I had all of that already. So now I've got a janky looking 6" worth of conversion adaptors coming out of my computer input on my sound card going to the Sub Output on the mixer. I gave it a quick test with OBS and it recorded all of the mics coming from the mixer. I'll do more extensive testing later this evening. Hopefully it will be in sync.

2024.05.07 09:09 thebestteibo Advice for Audiointerface for Gaming/Music/Movies
Hello everyone, i would like to get some advice regarding my Audiointerface choice. Currently I have a focus rite solo 3rd Gen and I am quite happy with it. The only reason I am considering an upgrade is the fact you can only use one device as a sound source (When using the other inputs it will output the sound as your microphone).
The budget is around 300€ ( I am from Germany so the shipping cost could be high for some stuff)
So here is what I need:
- Min 1 XLR input for my microphone (rode nt-A1)
- Min 1 6.3 mm Headphone jack (For the Audeze LCD-X)
- 2 x 6.3 Headphone jack Inputs would be a nice to have
- EArc would be nice because I am planning on getting a bluerayplayer and my monitor supports EArc)
- Min 1 line in connector for my guitar
Current use case:
Mainly I use the Audiointerface for gaming/listing to music/movies. I use EQ Apo on my PC for EQ and Dolby Access (Dolby Atmos).
Further thoughts:
- I've read some comments about the headphone amplifier of the focusrite soundinterfaces being not very good and people should look into other brands.
- When using a bluerayplayer the sound won't be processed by my computer and therefore will not be affected by the EQ preset. Does it make sense to buy a soundinterface with a EQ build in?
- When using Dolby Atmos on a bluerayplayer is there a requirement for the soundinterface to specifically support it?
Thanks in advance and have a great day everyone. (If some sentences are confusing or hard to make sense of please let me know and I will try to correct/rewrite them)

Hello ,
I have Audeze LCD-Xs and Audio-gd NFB-11s up for sale. Prices do NOT include shipping.
Audeze LCD-X (2019) ($600 + Shipping) These are a catch and release for me. These do not have the carrying case, and come with the following:
- Dekoni Velour Pads
- Custom mini-XLR to TRS cable
- Spare screws and tension bits
- New metal headband and leather piece
Audio-gd NFB-11 ES9018 DAC AMP Combo ($70 + Shipping) Had these for a while, and upgraded my DAC and AMP. They're fairly used, so I figured $70 is a pretty fair price. Still works flawlessly. There was a LED light above the 1/4" TRS port, but I unplugged the connector because the LED light was annoying, but you can easily plug it back in and the light will turn on again. Comes with a 4ft optical cable + a 6ft power cable.

2024.05.06 07:07 NYC2BRKen Impulse Buy... setup question
| Hi everyone, Was looking at a beginner karaoke setup, and Amazon popped up a sale and made an impulse buy of an Innopow 4-Channel Wireless Microphone System, Quad UHF Metal Cordless Mic, 4 Handheld for $150. So... trying to decipher and making sure I have this right. The Innopow has 4 separate Microphone outputs or a single 1/4" output. Option 1: Super simple/cheap. Single 1/4" output from microphone system to a cheap amplifier (looking at a cheapie $50 Pyle Amplifier). Then outputting that to some Yamaha Outdoor Speakers I have around ($75 at BestBuy). Option 2: 4 individual outputs to a Behringer Xenyx mixer. Two of the microphones would connect via the big style cable via inputs 1 & 2. The other two via a big style to RCA cable into inputs 3 & 4. The mixer would connect via 1/4" output to an amplifier via 1/4" input. The amplifier goes to the same Yamaha outdoor speakers. Does either sound right or am I completely getting the connections wrong? Thanks in advance for walking a noob through this. https://preview.redd.it/p0nms89doqyc1.png?width=4500&format=png&auto=webp&s=b0d39347194f718a172a0b73c0c5fb710ae138b7 submitted by NYC2BRKen to karaoke [link] [comments] |
