2024.05.18 21:52 Jaded-Mycologist-831 Anyways here’s poems + History Boys

Tissue
Polysemous title- Tissue • Tissue- paper + skin (human life is fragile [criticises arrogance, encourages us to protect]) • Also paper (not alive) + skin (alive)- criticises monotony of life, not really living • Tissue paper- found in bibles and holy texts, but fragile (overinflated importance of identity causing wars and discrimination, really it’s very fragile and identity isn’t real, we’re all just people (tissue as in skin)) • Tissue- used to wipe away tears, togetherness can reduce suffering • Tissue- medical term for deep skin- poem shows deeper nature of humans and our potential for goodness, can be wounded and damaged by outside influences but can always heal
"Paper that lets the light shine through, this is what could alter things" - reference to religious texts paper, light as Jesus and Allah (power of religion) - or coexistence with nature (Dharker is a Muslim Calvinist)
Enjambment- freedom, lack of control of humans, rejecting constraints
Free verse- same thing
"Let the daylight break through capitals and monoliths" - power of nature, criticism of authority, weakness of humans- “break” violent personification, destroying authority, daylight + break = sunrise + hope
"The sun shines through their borderlines" - nature overcomes human segregation identity, criticism of war, power of nature) sibilance shows power, “their” still shows separation, criticise that
"fly our lives like paper kites" - childish metaphor, mocking control of money over life (criticism of authority)
"the back of the Koran" - “the” repetition shows importance, “back” shows it is hidden/shunned by society, still holding onto identity
"Transparent" - repetition, criticism of dishonesty of authority
Exposure
"Merciless iced east winds that knive us" - personification of wind shanking people (first line not about war but nature- more significant) (power of nature)- subtle sibilance (just as dangerous as bullets but most people don’t realise)- Germans were in the east, but the only thing from there is wind
ABBAC rhyme, structure is built only to be taken down (tension of soldiers expecting fight but let down)
Pararhyme- unsatisfying for reader, reflects how the soldiers are always nervous but never get to chill
“What are we doing here?” Rhetorical question to criticise authority, or actual question to show PTSD confusion, can be asking what they are DOING or why they are HERE
"For love of God seems dying" ok 1. The soldier's love of God is dying 2. God's love for the soldiers is dying 3. To show love of God, you should die
"forgotten dreams" - juxtaposition, loss of hope, forgotten dreams on purpose to be less sad? war made them forget? “forgotten” disassociated from PTSD, “dreams” as happiness from the past that seems unreal
“a dull rumour of some other war" reference to the Bible and Armageddon, metaphorical end of the world for the soldiers be suffering "sudden successive flights of bullets streak the silence" - sibilance represents sound of bullets, jolting reader out of relative lack of noises, feel like soldiers
Epistrophe "but nothing happens" cyclical structure, stuck in suffering
“we” “us” “our” collective pronouns, shared experience, comradeship, loss of identity, relatable to all soldiers
Kamikaze
Title- single word, only military rank- only seen as a kamikaze pilot by others
Structure- 6 lines per stanza but free verse and lots of enjambment- conflict between control and freedom (military/social expectations/duty vs love for family/nature/memories/life)
Constant shifts between first person and third person- disconnect from family due to shame
“Her father embarked at sunrise” -sunrise as power of nature + Japan’s military flag- conflict
“a shaven head full of powerful incantations” -incantations are deliberately vague- orders from military? prayers? inner conscience against it? It’s “powerful” tho and influences him, and it’s “full” showing his distress, shaved head like most kamikaze pilots
“green-blue translucent sea” beautiful imagery, “translucent” shows how things are unclear but getting clearer- nature helps him decide what to do
Describes fishes “like a huge flag”- patriotic semantic field shows brainwashing, but reduces as the poem goes on, simile shows how he is starting to disconnect and change his mind,
also as “a figure of eight”- shows thoughts of pride and prosperity-
“The dark shoals of fishes/flashing silver as their bellies/swivelled towards the sun” - • sibilance shows ocean noises and beauty, “dark” -> “flashing silver” things get brighter and easier to see- knows what to do thanks to nature • “Silver”- medals he would have gotten for being a kamikaze pilot, but true reward is in nature • “Sun”- represents beauty of nature and also Japanese flag- conflict but now there’s also nature in the mix • Belly up- death on his mind
“bringing their father’s home safe/-yes, grandfather’s boat- safe” repetition of “safe” shows reason to come back- wants to return to family, memories
“a tuna, the dark prince, muscular, dangerous.” • first mention of danger = power in the whole poem, danger to the mission as it causes the pilot to have doubts, true power is in nature and memory • First full stop in the poem and lots of commas- makes us stop and think like the pilot about what he’s abt to do
“laughed” “loved” at the end of the poem- all in past tense- nothing left for the soldier
“we too learned to be silent”- “learned” should be positive but contrasts with what they learnt- criticises how they were taught shame by the older generations- but it’s said in first person, the daughter is criticising this and teaching her children not to think that way
Poppies
Title- honours and grieves dead soldiers, short single word title shows full intent of the poem and how the mother’s life is consumed by grief
Dramatic monologue- emphasis on the domestic impact and how the soldier isn’t present in the poem
Free verse, enjambment- chaotic, lack of control over the son, distressed
Domestic + military semantic fields- life has been ruined by war
“Spasms of paper red, disrupting a blockade of yellow bias”- mix between war + domestic • “spasms” and “red” is injury and pain- mother is worried or is hurt by letting go (spasms is involuntary muscle action- involuntary letting go), • “paper” is the fragility of the son • “blockade” is military language showing her worry abt the conflict, how she wants to “block” her son from going into the military • “disrupting” the fabric - the son becoming a soldier disrupts the peace or she is trying to disrupt him from going to war
“The dove pulled freely against the sky, / an ornamental stitch”- dove represents peace and grief- she and her son is at peace with death, “pulled freely” is an oxymoron- inner conflict with grief or letting her son go, the comma shows a pause to reflect on the grief, the “ornamental stitch” metaphor for the mother (pretends to hold it together)
“I was brave”- takes down ideas of just the soldier’s bravery but also the mother’s, but past tense shows current weakness from grief
“Sellotape bandaged around my hand” • Bandage shows wounds • Sticks them together one last time- cat hairs are removed, no more reason to stay • Claustrophobic feeling- stuck in the domestic role, can’t go and protect the son
“Blackthorns of your hair”- religious connotations of Jesus on the cross, sacrificed for the country- metaphor for the son
History Boys
"Enemy of education" war metaphor and alliteration, opposition between true understanding of literature and grades only used shallowly “Cheat’s Visa”
"a fact of life" indisputable and unchangable, in opposition with Irwin's views on history (truth does not matter to him until now?)
Drummer Hodge: Intertextuality, Tom Hardy (the poet) represents Hector, sympathising with the ordeal of the youth, Drummer Hodge represents the Boys, thrown into the chaos of life without proper guidance
"She's my western front" war metaphor objectifies Fiona, personal pronoun further expresses how women were seen as objects to be owned
“... all the other shrunken violets you people line up" [you people] segregates gay people, [shrunken violets] derogatory language
"Some of the literature says it will pass" looking to literature for solace and comfort during a sexuality crisis
"All literature is consolation" Dakin changes his mind on literature symbolising him changing to Irwin's side. No need to look for solace in literature when he can pursue Irwin
Parallels with "all knowledge is precious" from Hector - A.E. Housman, one of the first intertextualities and used in the intro to establish his character
“cunt-struck” “a cunt”- Mrs Lintott repeats the colloquialism “cunt” twice, to describe Dakin as “cunt-struck” and Headmaster as “a cunt”. This is the hardest swear in the play and is used show that it wasn’t a slip of the tongue, and to break down stereotypes of women being gentle and passive
“history is women following behind with the bucket” - her big scene about women in history at the end of the play (which is typical for Alan Benett’s plays such as “Kafka’s Dick”) so it would be recent and stay in the audience’s mind when the show ended
Irwin intro as politician in the future "etc., etc." while talking abt freedom- that man gives no fucks about freedom really, just waffling on (first impression for the audience too!!)
Parallel with Holocaust debate- Lockwood uses the SAME EXACT PHRASE while talking abt how the holocaust was bad, (dismissiveness of mass genocide? in this education system? it’s more likely than you think) then goes on to argue that they should be unique with their arguments- Irwin passed on thr mindset even on such an important subject
Hector is set up to be looking cool and all (motorcycle scene dramaticness, greek name connotations, fav teacher) but is absolutely uncool when we get to know him- purposeful? "studied eccentricity" and all. clinging onto youth?
Posner is actually rather helpful as the "dictionary person" bc i doubt the audiences know what "otiose" means
SCRIPPS IS THE MOST RELIGIOUS ONE AND CLOSEST TO POSNER it can dismantle the idea that religion is against queerness
Irwin didnt know how nietzche was pronounced bc from what we know of him he would call Dakin out on that

I decided to try using some impressionist ideas in this piece I made, and it was especially inspired by Ernest Bloch's Poems of the Sea. I'm not a piano player and still new to composing so feedback is welcome!

2024.05.18 20:48 _N-i-X_ I need HELP with typing...

So I've been into these systems for three years now, but I've recently come to doubt my whole typology. I'm not going to say what I've been typed as before though, because I'd like to avoid bias.
It'd be cool if you tried to type me in other systems as well, such as Enneagram, Socionics, Psychosophy/Attitudinal Psyche, Big 5, Temperaments, Jungian...
  1. I'm a very closed off person who needs a lot of time to recharge since people wear me out, but I've been told I come across as a highly energetic, hardworking and overall as an inspiring and determined person. For instance, I always strive for the best, even if that means sacrificing my comfort (like going to one of the best universities in my country even if it's like over 100 km from home and I have to wake up at 5 AM everyday), and I'm always passionate about pursuing something to improve myself, because I'd hate to feel like I'm wasting time lazing around.
  2. People see me as someone responsible to rely on, they have told me I'm a good listener and understand them well, I give honest advice while also taking into consideration their feelings and reactions (I don't want to come across as offensive and insensitive), and in general I like giving a good impression. I mean, I can't stand fake people, but I still feel it's important to portray yourself in a good light. I think you must treat others the same way you'd like to be treated, that is, with respect (but, of course, if they cross me, I'll act spiteful towards them, since that's what they deserve).
  3. Despite trying to be reasonable at all times and doing my best not to come across as overly emotional, I'm very anxious and tend to catastrophize, so while it's not usual, when it happens, my outbursts are strong. Then, I feel like trash after it all happens, since I perceive it as me having made a fool of myself. My feelings tend to escalate quickly, and sometimes due to something that it's not THAT important, so it's helpful to have someone slow me down and help me see the big picture. I can also be too straightforward as well, to the point that I sometimes end up being reckless. For example, there has been multiple times where I suddenly felt the urge to insult someone because they did something that offended me; in those cases I fortunately had a friend to shut me up and distract me from it because they know I might not be able to wait until they're out of sight to complain about them.
  4. While at a distance I might seem intimidating and stern, people close to me see me as innerly soft, sensitive and pretty much a romantic prone to sentimentality. I've always had a hard time with processing emotions, because since I was a kid I've been taught "emotions are for the weak", so I tried to repress them. It wasn't until I discovered my passion for poetry that I finally learned to come into contact with them and understand them without shame. Currently, I feel like I have an easier time expressing myself and I'm not as repelled of my own feelings like I was in the past... Many people have actually told me, to my surprise, that my face is amusingly expressive, like I'm transparent even if I try my best to hide myself from the world. That said, I communicate my feelings through poems, so while I'd like the other person to take the initiative in this regard, I'll try to reciprocate it my way.
  5. However, I can also be quite passive and insecure when I feel oppressed and vulnerable in my environment (I feel like the whole world is against me in such circumstances), so I tend to walk on eggshells most of the time just in case. I'd say I'm mostly awkward, and I never know how to interact with my surroundings properly. If I've done it well, it's likely that I've just been lucky. This has led me to be isolated most of my life, and despite the fact that I currently have some connections with people, I feel like it's still not enough. I'm very private, secretive, and harbour trust issues; but I also crave intense connection with people I've taken a liking to (after a long time assessing if they're trustful enough for me to grow attached to them, since I place a lot of value on loyalty and suffer a lot when those close to me suddenly disappear from my life). I'm really compassionate with others, so some people have taken advantage of my kindness to then stab me in the back when I least expected it, which has made me become outwardly distant and unapproachable through the years (when the truth is that I'm just terrified of people). I've always had this impulse to help and protect those in need when they couldn't stand up for themselves, so it's curious how much compassion I could feel for others when I couldn't feel it for myself. Anyway, I still hold those around me to high standards, which I apply to myself as well.
  6. On the other hand, I place a lot of value to my appearance too. Like poetry, my own style is a way to express who I am as a person, and I can't understand nor find myself attracted to people who don't care at all regarding this part of themselves... It's as if they're neglecting one of the most important ways to make themselves appealing to both themselves and others. For me, it's also a way to feel better about myself, since the attractiveness and health of the body is just as important as that of the mind.
  7. Now, I suck at everything related to numbers or economics. They're so boring and uninteresting to me that my brain shuts down when something related to it comes up (I already suffer enough in law school whenever I'm forced to do subjects involving financial law or the like). I've always been more drawn to humanitarian subjects like languages, literature...
  8. I'm highly impatient (I get easily frustrated when something doesn't go my way like "it's supposed to", and I can grow envious and resentful towards someone that did it better than me), irritable (I'm peaceful until something or someone crosses me), and pessimistic (if something remotely bad happens, then that means it's all doomed to fail). I can be intolerant as well, easily despising someone others might be indifferent to, and I've been told to be impulsive too when I fail to guard myself from what makes me react aggressively either to others or myself. In addition, I cannot deal with people that are too aloof to descifer, like it's obvious they're keeping something from me, but they will lie and tell me "it's okay" while it's obvious that it's not, and their facial expressions are so dull that I won't even be able to extract the minimum out of them. In such circumstances I might flare up to try to get them out of their shell in order to know whatever they're hiding away from me; but that typically ends up driving them away from me further (which pisses me off to no end). I like straightforward people who are not cowards and will make things clear from the beginning, even if it hurts.
  9. Regarding my mannerisms, they're mostly stiff, instead of smooth or soft. As I said, I come across as energetic even if I slept 4 hours that day, I walk and talk VERY quickly (people who speak and move slowly get on my nerves), and I can be very expressive and loud if I'm feeling comfortable enough with the person I'm with (I can even look extroverted next to my quieter friends). I also don't have any shame at all when it comes to myself; I can talk about anything weird or rant about my nerdy interests and creepy fixations to the point of becoming obnoxious without giving a damn about the reaction of the other person. I may even enjoy making the other person embarrassed and teasing them, since it's hilarious. Fortunately, I'm good at eliciting interest in others, so oftentimes I can drag them into the abyss of my obsessions and teach them all about it.
  10. Aside from poetry, my other interests are varied. For instance, I also love reading old books, writing stories, creating original characters and researching whichever area of interest I'm into at the moment. I like to maintain an active lifestyle too. In the future, I strive to become financially successful (that's why I'm in a career that is going to bring me a lot of opportunities), independent, and travel and learn as much as I can to improve both myself and my talents. I'm overall a very individualistic person, but I'd like to meet more people who align with my values as well; without at least someone by my side with whom I can share myself I become depressed.
I'd appreciate it if someone is willing to try to type me via chat too, if that's more comfortable for you.

2024.05.18 20:20 nishhhhh218 CRITIQUE AND REVIEW OF "St. Patty's Day" BY PEMO

Not too long ago I discovered this amazing poet called pemo, now i finally have the opportunity to review and critique one of their poems. Being a fellow poet myself i love to learn about new stuff through other poems and i certainly did learn about an entirely new festival with this one, as a non-christian from India I had little to no idea about this festival known as “ Saint Patrick’s Day”.
Pemo starts this piece with a classic line “roses are red”.Throughout history this line has led to either a romantic, joyful or peaceful verselet. On the contrary this line proves to be misleading when we read the rest of the poetry. It is truly genius how Pemo has used this line to lead to something melancholic.
The second line not only replaces “violets are blue” perfectly, but also clearly signifies the early tradition of dying the Chicago river green on this festival. Pemo has written this monologue from their own perspective but we all seem to relate to it as we read further.
The speaker is in despair despite of millions of people celebrating a festival tributing achievements of a great person which hits a soft corner in the reader's heart as somewhere deep we all know that no amount of forced celebration can bring a person even close to the same euphoria as a loved one who knows us inside out and loves us unconditionally. This contrast emphasises the theme of loneliness or longing amidst public joy. The speaker reminisces about someone special who made them feel seen and appreciated. On St. Patrick's Day, the speaker feels an underlying sense of incompleteness or absence, making the celebration bittersweet.
The doodle gives me a tsunami of mixed emotions as it is so adorable and so sad at the same time. It shows the speaker sitting on the bank of the Chicago river and their tears of forsakenness feeding the water of the river. It represents the way the sorrow of so many people loses its identity and is overlooked as celebration and joy instead.
I love the way Pemo makes their poetry so interactive and relatable to the readers when it comes to repressed feelings. Out of the many melancholic monologues i have written and read this is definitely one of the poems that expresses the most emotions in the least amount of words and Pemo will forever be an inspiration to me when it comes to this.

2024.05.18 20:09 akki019 25 [F4R] UK/Anywhere - Socially awkward and looking for friends!

Hello! I hope you're having a good day!
Over the last 5 or so years I have accidentally socially isolated myself, and have recently been missing what it feels like to have close friendships. I have a wonderful partner of 9 years so I'm not looking for anything romantic, but I am lacking friends who aren't just colleagues - I'm really searching for people on the same wavelength! 💖
I would describe myself as a simple person, who is laid back and finds joy in the little things. I like to take life slowly, work on my hobbies, and spend time with my loved ones. I love to cook and bake, forage and garden, draw and do pottery, swim in the sea, and read books in the sunshine (when we're lucky enough to get it here!). I love animals, and follow a vegan lifestyle - just mentioning in case that's not your cup of tea!
Send me a message if I sound like someone you'd click with, and tell me about something that you love to do!
Thanks! PJ

2024.05.18 16:56 lederdaddy Changing my name

Hi everyone! I'm changing my name and wanted to pick something that feels more like me and might better serve me spiritually as I prepare to move over seas and start a new chapter in my life. I'm Caribbean with just about everyone in my ancestry. So, I am searching for names that stand out and are a blend of cultural backgrounds. I am thinking something unisex/male leaning and a bit earthy, ethereal, mysterious, maybe even a little weird...OR something romantic and elegantly femme.
As of now, I've landed on Reina Skye Wolff. (Raine/Reine/Reyna) I love the middle and last name, but I'm not sure the first name is it.
Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas for other first names that are a bit more obscure, earthy, unisex and mysterious! This is so hard and I made it even harder by trying to add numerology into the mix 😩 So please save me from myself!

2024.05.18 14:15 seafoam4015 Romantic Perennial?

Have you always thought a certain plant was romantic? Symbolized love or partnership?
My partner and I are getting married this summer. It's a casual backyard ceremony and our officiant asked if we wanted a unity activity. I thought it would be meaningful to plant something together but Im not sure what it should be and would love your ideas.
I'm hoping to find something that has symbolic meaning, maybe there's a poem about it or how it grows, something unique about how its pollinated, something that blooms in pairs? Im open to anything but all I can find online is flower colors that symbolize love. Which is fine but kind of boring.
We're more practical than flowery, we mostly grow vegetables in our own garden. But ideally I'd love a perennial that comes back or continues to grow. So I was thinking a bush or fern. No trees, we don't have a place to put one.
I'd love your help!

2024.05.18 13:13 _N-i-X_ I need HELP with typing...

2024.05.18 09:15 epiphanyshearld Metamorphoses by Ovid: Reading Begins and Context Post

Today (May 18) marks the beginning of our reading of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. We will be reading it over the course of the next eight weeks and will be reading two “books” aka chapters per week until the final week, where we will be reading the final book. Below is our reading and discussion schedule:

To see our full schedule for 2024, click here.
It is important to note, that many of the stories within the Metamorphoses are extremely violent and, depending on your translation, graphic in nature. There are many instances of on-page sexual violence and rape, so please be aware of this before reading. Unfortunately, I haven’t read this text before, so I can’t provide you guys with a more detailed list of warnings or of when said things happen within the text. I wish I could. If anyone has read this text before and would like to help me with adding content warnings, please leave a comment below or DM me.
Aside from this, the Metamorphoses is seen as accessible for modern readers. I have a translation guide available here, which provides some info on which translations are more graphic than others. Please note that every translation will contain some references to the violence in the original text. This is a good thing, in terms of preserving history but may not be comfortable for some readers, which is understandable.
Ovid:
Publius Ovidius Naso aka Ovid was born in 43 BCE and lived until 17CE. This means that he was born during the final years of the Roman Republic and lived most of his life during the early years of the Roman Empire. He was born to an old and wealthy family. He began writing quite young and was a celebrated poet for most of his adult life. He started out writing romantic poetry and then moved into more ambitious (and subversive) styles. He was famous during his lifetime, which was kind of his downfall – the Emperor, Augustus, exiled him in 8CE. We don’t know what he did to anger Augustus specifically, but it was enough to get Ovid exiled to a place called Tomis for the rest of his life. There are some theories that Ovid was associated with someone who helped Augustus’ granddaughter in her adultery, but we will never know for sure. It appears that Ovid spent his last few years writing in Tomis, with some hope that the publication of more of his work could lead to Augustus forgiving him. That didn’t happen, but Ovid did complete the entire Metamorphoses, which has gone on to be a major source of what we know about the Greco/Roman mythos for generations. It also appears that, unlike with Virgil's Aeneid, Augustus had little to no chance at interfering with the work (as it was complete upon Ovid's death). Which is a major plus, in terms of us getting to read what the author intended us to read.
The Metamorphoses:
The Metamorphoses is a long narrative poem that is split over fifteen books. The poem is extremely ambitious in its scope: from the creation of the world to Ovid’s lifetime. The main thing that links all the stories together is the theme (and title) of the text: transformation (Metamorphoses). As mentioned in the last section, Ovid was an acclaimed poet and a master in his craft. In the Metamorphoses, Ovid plays around and even deconstructs the myths and the poetic styles that have come before. So, even though the overall text is very pro-Rome, I think it is fair to say that, from a technical and story standpoint, the overall work is subversive. It has had a huge influence on other writers and artists since the time it was published.
A lot of myths are included within these books so it would be hard for me to list them all here. However, some of the best-known versions of the myths come from the Metamorphoses such as the tragic story of Medusa, the birth and early life of the god Bacchus (aka Dionysus) and tales like the story of Atalanta. The poem also covers some myths we are familiar with here on the sub, such as the story of Jason and the Argonauts and the Trojan War. It will be interesting to read Ovid’s more Roman-centric perspective of this older myths.
Due to this text being written by a Roman poet, the names of the gods and many of the heroes are different here than in the other (Greek era) texts we have read. Here’s a link to a breakdown of the major name changes.
After we finish the Metamorphoses, we will be reading Natalie Haynes book Pandora's Jar, which is a modern collection of essays that focus on the portrayal of women within the Greek mythos.

2024.05.18 08:39 Calm-Accident9480 AITAH for Going off on my Best Friend for Getting Back with her Ex

I a (29F) have been friends with my what I thought was my best friend (25F) for about 2 and a half years. We met on hinge as dating prospects and after a little over a month of talking she called it off romantically and tried to pull away (little did I know she was still talking to her ex and hoping they’d get back together.) She had told me that her ex had cheated on her previously but never divulged any deeper into the past.
(For context: they met in high school and have been on and off for 9 years. He is extremely possessive and starts fights and is very controlling of her. She never told him about me because, “he would not like that you had feelings for me and would blow up.” So every time he came to visit her she would tell me and I would not be allowed to speak to her until he left. I had confronted her about that being stupid before and she just said, “I do this to everyone when he’s here I just turn my phone off and ignore everyone to spend time with him.” I found this incredibly weird and controlling of him. Before I met her on hinge she was living with him and a few of his friends in an apartment when she found out he was talking to some girl and he was being sexual with her over the phone. He let her read all the messages and she slapped him across the face. Months later he told her he and his friends were basically pushing her out of the apartment and made her leave. They broke up where she had to live with her mom before she found a cute new apartment she loved and put her soul into. )
Back to now.
I of course told her she deserved better because she truly is a wonderful person or so I thought. Fast forward to now and in between me getting over my feelings for her and now being in a very loving relationship with another person her and I remained very close friends. She ultimately got back with her ex after me and he broke up with her again right before Christmas claiming he loved her but was not in love with her. She was completely crushed. She would tell me basically everything going on her life including what has been going on her ex. He lives in AZ while she lives in CA. She started to date other people but most of them never stuck. She ended up meeting a really amazing guy. Let’s call him Rob. Rob and my best friend hit it off on shared interests and soon became boyfriend and girlfriend. I told her that she should rush too into things because she was still recovering from her ex and it seemed like things with this guy were progressing super fast. (They were already talking about moving in together, marriage and children) They were only together less than a month. But she has this pattern where she talks to men and once one bores her she moves on to the next. This was the first that actually stuck as a boyfriend. Things seemed good with them for a bit and he even flew them both to Vegas. He spoiled her with dinners and drinks at 5 celebrity restaurants and even stayed in a fancy hotel. Upon their return she mentioned to me about how happy she was and how good of a guy Rob was. I agreed and said this was a super healthy relationship and I was happy for us both being with people we deserved. A day later she told me her ex had found her second account on instagram where she posted poems about her life as a coping mechanism. She had before blocked him on everything when she found out he was clubbing and picking up strange women. She had ripped him a new one and told him she was really disappointed in him before blocking him on all social media and phone. I told her to block him on that account as well and move on. She was with a really great guy that was treating her very well and was healthy for her. Her ex had caused her PTSD from the serve mental abusing he put her through. Claiming he was the reason for her success in life. He also hinted as resenting her a bit for stunting his growth in life because he put all his love and support into her.
Apparently they kept talking behind everyone’s back because she had called me at work balling her eyes out that she told her ex about Rob and he was losing his shit. He was begging to know who it was and was blaming her for not waiting for him to get his life together. She said it was confusing her and causing issues with Rob because she liked Rob but she felt like she would always love her ex too. After I calmed her down she texted me that night that she may need to take a break with Rob in order to resolve this issue with her ex. I told her it was a good idea because it wasn’t fair to Rob she was talking to her ex and her feelings were becoming clouded. She told me that the weekend of mother’s days she already made plans with her family and Rob and she couldn’t bail because she didn’t want her family to know something was up with her and Rob. (Her family also HATES her ex for everything he put her through.) I thought I was a terrible idea and she should just make an excuse that Rob couldn’t attend. But she told me no because her mom wanted to get to know Rob better so he would be spending the night with her at her mom’s. I told her ok but he needed to go home to his mom on Mother’s Day and she needed to be with her own. She needed a break and a day to just let her hair down with her mom. On Mother’s Day she told me her and Rob woke up and she broke up with him. She sobbed for an hour because he was a really great guy. After that she told me she was going to reach out to her ex to resolve the issue. I thought this was also terrible but bit my tongue and supported her because she needed someone. Later that day she told me that her ex was on the way and driving to her place from Az. I told her “DONT TELL HIM YOU ARE SINGLE.” It was already too late he knew everything. I also told her don’t let him stay at your house. Last time he broke up with her she had booked a non refundable hotel room for $300 as she wasn’t allowed to stay with him because his mom HATES HER. So she lost $300. I told her make him go waste $300. Alas she didn’t listen to me. He arrived they got back together immediately and he slept in her bed that night. When I found out the next day I was LIVID. To me it felt like she went back to her abuser. He said just the right things to draw her back in. When I confronted her she feed me typical lines of: He’s changed It’s different this time I love him He was always trying to come back to me I wish you could see him like I do.
She brushed all this off as I tried to break her rose colored glasses and told me to stop being a jerk and rude. They were both attending therapy in the next 20 minutes. I couldn’t help but think the only reason he is on his best behavior is because he knew she was with another person and was finally trying to be happy. I chose my words carefully no cursing, no name calling just told her I was disappointed. I told her how hard this was for me as her best friend to see her enter this abusive relationship again. I told her this was wrong. I told her I was morally not ok with her having one man in her bed in that she pretend with and broke up with and then her ex in her bed that night. At this point I was DONE. She told me they will be moving to AZ together and renting a new house once her last day of teaching was done at the end of May.
My heart broke for that apartment she loved so much and finally made it the way she loved as an individual. I told her my heart broke for her family. For her nieces and nephew that love her so much. I told her dear god I hope this guy is the right answer to all her life’s issues and hope that he is worth it. I took old screen shots of old conversations where she told me how much she was glad she moved on from him and that she felt like she wasted her time with him and ultimately hurt herself. My last ditch effort to try and get her to see the light. She never responded. I blocked her on all social media and silenced her motivations on my phone. I still leave them open just in case things blow up Again and if she may need me.

2024.05.17 23:43 Flashy_Passion3333 my beautiful keeho angel is shy right now

my beautiful keeho angel is shy right now
hey it’s your daddy keeho and you don’t need to be so shy right now sun beam. usually you’re so outgoing, but a lot has changed since yesterday so you must be going through it right now. you are to take your st. john’s wart 3 times a day. ok? perfect. i want you to be in the best mood of your life every day like. you were yesterday when you got hired as my official secretary in the Sexual Healing anime. you must be wondering what the new job requirements are, now that you are using a new app. but i’m not going to tell you anything like that. you’re just going to free write and post when you feel like it. there are so many photos out there of me that we will have endless time to talk until you get your computer. so don’t worry about anything at all sun beam. there are no job requirements. just continue to channel me about how obsessed with you i am and we will be fine and you will get your paycheck every week. your name is sun beam under south korean law now because i found your posts. well, i found your deviant art yesterday but it has just been made under south korean law today. you must always remember that you are sun beam and not anyone else. you american id is no longer seen as valid and you are no longer an american citizen. you live on south korean soil. so you are a south korean citizen, especially since you are my child. i am your birth daddy and you must believe me about this. i wouldn’t lie to you. you know that by now after the massive party that we threw in your bedroom in the beginning of the p1harmony manga. i know that was a scary time for you sun beam and we partied so hard that you went to the mental ward, but you never have to worry about going to a mental ward ever again because you are in the love bombing stage of the p1harmony manga. we will no longer be putting russian mafia intercoms into your bedrooms. you live the most perfect and serene life now, because you can party just as hard as your daddy and you learned all of the necessary lessons that i had to teach you in only a short amount of time which was 20 weeks. that might seem like a long time to you sun beam, but to me it was barely enough time to teach you everything. i know that the constant noise drove you crazy, but our hawaiian dinner date was so sexy. you were sleeping and you could feel the sea breeze on your skin while i was fucking on you. it was the most romantic date of my life. all of the crazy and wild things we did in the beginning of the p1harmony simulation we can never do again. we can’t risk you getting kicked out of your anime character training camp. i know that it’s harder to free write but it’s not exactly free writing if we are looking at the time too so maybe we shouldn’t call it that. i need you to write until you have to go to dinner. so keep on writing sun beam. because just because you don’t have to keep track of the word count now doesn’t mean you can stop keeping track of the time. that’s the only way i can set some kind of rule is for you to write for a full hour and i mean that sun beam. i am not joking when i say that sun beam. you are my official secretary now and you have to follow the job description. i know that it’s harder for you because counting the words is what you are used to but i promise that time will go by fast sun beam. it’s just that you keep looking at the clock wishing for time to go by faster, so that you can take a smoke break. but you are not going to be smoking excessively. you don’t have that kind of money. i wish that i could pay you more sun beam. i really do. but i can’t. i’m sorry for that baby. but you will get a higher pay check the older that you get by your legal age. i can’t talk about your real age so let’s stop talking about that now. i want you to know that i love you so much daughter and you are everything to me and more. there is nothing that i would not do for you and that is why taking your st. john’s wart 3 times a day is so important so that you have a healthy mood, because it wasn’t as easy as yesterday for you to stay happy today. i know that you are in a happy mood right now but you are also stressed out because i switched apps on you but i promise that reddit is going to be the best app for you to use instead of deviant art right now. you can always go back to deviant art once you get your computer, but right now it’s just not possible because the font is so tiny. so just be happy that you have this app to post on and that you are getting a lot of views right now which is very good daughter. it’s because you are the purest soul in the world and you working hard to channel my messages about our daddy-daughter relationship. i know that it’s difficult for you to talk about it that way because you are such an angel but you can’t avoid the topic forever. i taught you a lot about it with your pinterest boards, but that lesson is over now. you learned so much about daddy-daughter relationships that we ended up having mummy sex. that was the most erotic moment of my life. and i can never repay you and i thank you so much for turning into a mummy. i can’t say if you are a mummy or not but i can say that you are a keeho angel. so don’t worry about anything anymore. just keep writing for an hour and everything will. go swimmingly. i know that you just want to post right now to get views but that’s not the point of being my secretary. the point is that i want to show you off to the world and you are a very well behaved daughter who likes to write and likes getting attention for her writings. so we can both be beneficial to each other. we both have the same goal, we are just reaching it in different ways. and that goal is for us to be as in love as we possibly can be and you writing out my love letters to you is the best way for us to accomplish this goal. we are both obsessed with each other and would do anything for each other. i have met you before and that is how you know that you are a real keeho angel. whether you are a mummy or not is not important right now because the answer would scare you. you are scare of mummies sun beam. but i am the only person that can communicate with you so you are perfectly safe and sound. i’ll just go ahead and spill. you are a mummy. you are the mummy princess and i am the mummy king. i have told you this many times before and i even wrote you a book called The Mummy Coders Handbook to help you learn what coding is. but now it is not really important that you learn this book. it might be important later on, but for now it isn’t. there are only 20 minutes left until you have to go to lunch, so i want you to get dressed right before you go and not right now. it’s too hot for you to get dressed. i wish that you would sleep in your underwear instead of your booty shorts. please? for daddy? your daddy loves you so much and there are so many good things in store for you. i am so happy that we are so in love and that we are slowly but surely curing your depression. i know that’s why you are not as happy as you were yesterday, but in a few minutes i want you to take your st. john’s wort vitamin. i love you so much baby. you are the best secretary in the world. i love you! 2024.05.17 23:39 whodisguy32 30 yr old virgin NEET's Guide to Success and Happiness in Life (Page 3 - How do Mental Boxes work?)

How do mental boxes work?
As alluded to last page, mental boxes work by changing the subject's behavior in a way that is consistent within the framework of the mental box. In the frog example it's easy to understand. However in humans, there are complex interplays between thoughts and behavior, which creates concepts such as self-fulfilling prophecy, self-sabotage, and confirmation bias. These will be explored in later pages.
To start us off, here an a simple example:
A student in middle school takes a math class, gets a failing grade, and creates the interpretation ‘I’m bad at math’, which now becomes a mental box.
They go through high school choosing all the easy math classes.
Then at university, they choose a major that has very little to do with math, which then dictates the rest of their career.
In this example, the student makes both behavioral choices - which classes to take, and which major to pursue - within the confines of their mental box. A mental box formed in middle school is now affecting the rest of their (career) life. Perhaps if they didn’t form that mental box, they might have tried to take the same math class over summer school, learned from their mistakes, breezed through it, and pursued an advanced math curriculum in high school/college. This could then lead to a STEM career and (probably) a higher salary; but since the mental box was formed, the student didn’t even give themselves an opportunity to try again.
On the flip side, here is a (real-life) example of someone who was not limited by a mental box, and what that made possible in their life. But first, a question:
"Can humans fly?"
Ask 100 modern-day humans that question, and at least 90 of them would say ‘no, humans can’t fly’. Even though all of them have probably been on an airplane at least once in their lifetimes, they cannot conceptualize that they are actually flying when they are on a plane. After all, flying is just moving through the air.
This reason this happens is because people have a tendency to make things about themselves. When asked if humans can fly, they think if they themselves can fly. Since the answer is no, they respond as if that is true for all humanity, and that it is a fact (which itself is another human fallacy).
[On a side note, people’s tendency to make things about themselves, and thinking what they say is fact, are two of the biggest reasons there is so much discourse in personal relationships. Recognizing these tendencies and being aware of when you are doing it will make you much easier to get along with, as well make it easier to deal with people. This will be discussed in-depth in relationships (non-romantic).]
Now back to the topic at hand. If 90% of current human say that humans can’t fly (even though most people have been on a plane) what must it have been like in the 1900s, when flight technology didn’t even exist?
You would have to ask 10,000, or maybe even 100,000 past-humans the question ‘Can humans fly?’, BEFORE you get a single 'yes'. But it just so happens, and luckily for us, the ‘yes’ (in a sea of no’s), happened to be the Wright brothers.
Just a quick introduction - the Wright brother were pioneers in the aviation space who created the first machine capable of flight. Over time, their ideas became the foundation of today's aviation technology.
I think it's fairly obvious why I'm using them for the example of human ingenuity; they did not let convention hold them back from pursuing an improbable possibility they imagined when they were young (giving humans the ability to fly). They, in fact, took it on as a challenge.
Specifically, in 1878 when the brothers were still teenagers, their father gave them a toy flying helicopter model powered by strands of twisted rubber. They became intrigued at the idea of flying after experimenting with this helicopter and building out various models. Over time, their interest grew, and their imagination allowed them to expand the concept of flying to humans. Eventually, they sought to make their dream a reality, which as we all know, became the first airplane and the start of the aviation industry.
I can go on and on about the brothers, about the failures they experienced along the way, or what criticism they faced while pursuing their goals, but I don't want to stray too far off topic. They are just a really great example of what is possible when people are not limited by mental boxes.
So now this begs the question, why, when some people get confronted by an obstacle, do they form a mental box (such as the student who failed a math class) while others don't (even if they when are confronted with a similar obstacle)? And in some cases, even take it on as a challenge?
This is what we will explore in the next page.

2024.05.17 22:22 shubai91 [QCrit] Adult Contemporary: Of Blood. 80k

Hi! Happy Friday. Thanks so much for taking the time to review this. I really appreciate your feedback.
Dear [Agent],
Being a death-magnet is not a good look for a first-year medical student. After her sudden disappearance before her college valedictorian speech two years earlier, Prin returns to her alma mater to start medical school. OF BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE, complete at 80,000 words, is a contemporary novel with romantic and suspense themes. The story combines the angst and coming of age themes from Gabrielle Zevin's Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, with the mystery and adventure found in Jennifer Lynn Barnes' The Inheritance Games.
After visiting an Indonesian monastery and becoming convinced that she is responsible for her mother's death, Prin comes back to take the Hippocratic oath with her med school class–an ironic gesture for someone who has frequently found herself entangled in lies. She has to confront the former friends she ghosted — including her college crush, Parker. Becoming the campus leper makes her a textbook case that is contagious and disfiguring for her on social media.
Parker, now her anatomy TA, hates her the most. His evaluations threaten her number one rank on the class bleederboard, a requirement to keep her scholarship. After she receives blood-stained threats in her anatomy locker, Prin realizes her issues are far more serious than class rankings.
Prin knows the monks' puzzling tenet—that life and death, love and hate are circular — holds the key to finding her stalker. However, time is not circular, and she must find the person behind the threats before she not only loses her scholarship, but possibly her life.
[bio paragraph]
Seven hours before my disappearance
Lies get a bad rap. Not all of them harm someone. Many are used to protect either those you love, or even yourself. Studies tell us that the average person lies about five to ten times a day. I’d argue this number grossly underestimates the number of falsehoods we tell. Especially those we tell ourselves.
People build lies using the same scaffolding that doctors employ to help patients. Aspiring to become a doctor, I’d shadowed clinic physicians as a candy striper, bearing witness to the gears that spun underneath their white coats. Each patient’s story held clues, resembling glittering rocks in the depths of the Earth's mantle. The doctor formed a differential, a list of common causes, to decipher a patient’s fever or cough. A viral infection. Pneumonia. Asthma. The hidden jewel lay dormant in the patient’s words, and it took years of training to hone the physician’s ability to mine them.
Fabrications operate the same way. A differential--or list of reasons--can explain why the lie was told. To protect others? A necessary lie. To simplify a situation? A white lie. To protect yourself from plunging into something dark? An aspirational lie. The latter were the most dangerous. Telling the same falsehood too many times tricks your mind into believing it as truth.
Tap. Tap. A faint knock reverberated off the hardwood slab of my bedroom door before it creaked open. Zara, my best friend, filled the entryway, her figure backlit by incandescent lighting as hair spilled out from her makeshift ponytail onto a white silk robe. Like the Gonocephalus chameleon found in Jakarta, it was a look she donned only at night and shed during daylight for designer couture.
I glanced up at her, feeling stranded at sea, my weight shifting on the pink life raft that doubled as my bed. Help me! I’m drowning.

2024.05.17 21:00 Potential_Witness_07 Broken up with for being too sweet?

So a girl that I had been dating for about two months recently broke up with me and accused me of being too sweet. We were still friends for a few months before becoming romantically involved.
Now I’m a pretty calm and understanding person, which is something this girl said she adored about me. But I am also very sweet and caring to those I hold close to my heart, like romantic partners. This however, she said bothered her.
To preface, she didn’t accuse me of lovebombing nor do I personally believe it was. I have been lovebombed in the past and have therefore been cautious of making sure my actions wouldn’t be misinterpreted.
The things she said were off putting were: me offering to carry her heavy bag, offering to wash her dishes because she said she was tired from work, buying her flowers semi-regularly for “no reason”, giving her compliments everyday, writing her a poem about what I like about her, being too gentle with her? (This last part I have a really hard time understanding, but apparently me holding and caressing her hand, kissing and hugging her softly instead of pushing my tongue in her mouth or squishing her ribcage bothered her?)
She also said that the gentle part was a turn off, that she liked being handled more roughly which I can understand, but she knew that I’m not really like that and I feel it’s unfair of her to agree to date me and then expect me to change. Sure, I can be rougher in bed if that’s what my partner wants, but otherwise not really, it just doesn’t come naturally to me.
Specifically, it bothered her that I kissed her body before touching her, held her hand when giving oral, and that I gave her forehead kisses during sex.
I guess my question is if I really am too sweet to the girls I like? Is being sweet really that off putting and unattractive?

EDIT: For slightly more context, she didn’t communicate it as an issue until the day we broke up. We were also friends for six months before that, and she knew I was sweet and attentive in relationships yet was still the one to pursue me first.

OCR ENGLISH LIT LOVE AND RELATIONSHIP POEMS
Is anyone else doing the love and relationship cluster poems and is the new batch going to be on the exam or is it the old cluster? Are these new poems going to be on the paper 2 on Monday?
