2012.04.30 17:02 Biogeography: For your species distribution needs.

Biogeography is the study of the distribution of species and ecosystems in geographic space and through geological time. Knowledge of spatial variation in the numbers and types of organisms is as vital to us today as it was to our early human ancestors, as we adapt to heterogeneous but geographically predictable environments.

2024.05.18 22:28 Substantial_Bus4022 CMV: The reasoning behind the current state of the disparity between men and women in dating is mostly explained by superficial means and the core problems are not discussed frequently enough.

We know how the dating world has been as polarized as ever between men and women. But rather looking at the core factors most discussions are about the superficial symptoms or best case the contributors. In my opinion, the (non-exhaustive) root causes which are underrepresented in the day-to-day discussion are the following:
(1) Women are protected from outside world by their parents even after they passed 18, so it creates a shell and within that shell are mostly friends and family only. Their emotional reactions are always met with empathy and hence they socialise in a bonding and supporting environment. Thats why they have a larger spectrum of emotions to convey at hand (which is socially accepted). Men on the other hand are not protected. Parents stop parenting after 12-13 and the only guidance they get is to be a man. No social bonding since independence is a virtue, no protection or empathy since you are now a man, and no guidance.
(2) Men dont socialize to bond but to fill the gap until they find someone and grow up. Just like watching sport, going to a car race, its to spend time. Women socialize for emotional connection and understanding.
(3) In dating women have a better sense of whats cringe / creepy / desperate because they are on the receiving end. Since men are not approached they cant differentiate whats well-received or poorly because in their head the intention is louder. Just like sometimes people say something and then later realize how cringe they behaved, men have to go through this by trial and error. Since women listen its easier for them to learn behavior which suits their self-image.
(4) Women are more emotionally ready for a relationship. They jump straight about thinking with whom and how they should form a relationship. In a sense they can skip the courting part, since the expectations and decisions are mostly made by them.
They dont have to sink down to the level of approaching someone and figuring out what he likes, worry about being funny, charming, organize the date, be rejected because there are other girls trying. If there is no other girl in the picture then it was only up to the guy to be one or not, but they dont have to be affraid someone else will approach him.
Since they can and are already thinking about who would be a good fit for them and have the opportunity to explore and test it from the constant courters, obviously they will be more knowledgeable of what they need and what dynamic works with them.
(5) Men cannot even comprehend mostly what it means to be emotionally involved with someone in their early ages, thats why they go after the only "connection" they know which is sex. Cheap shots, horny messages, I dont have to explain it, which makes them slightly connected to someone, even if it doesnt last long. Yes most men are that desperate.
Sometimes they have a value system they rely on, but when you need to move mountains to find someone that value system often ends up in shambles. "But there isn't nothin' like the sight of an amputated spirit; there is no prosthetic for that." Which leads to the misguided young men who start following toxic ideas.
(6) Men have a tendency for aggression and distancing themselves from the world because thats what is accepted from them. The only negative emotion and response which is okay for a man to convey is to be aggressive and isolation to figure out how to go on.
So I am wondering if I am the only one who sees that the real sources of the this difference are constantly misnamed.

2024.05.18 21:38 cmnrdt Games that incentivize multiple base camps and/or outposts?

Most base-building and survival type games expect you to have a primary base that has all of your stuff and that acts as the central hub of activity, usually making it a huge pain to relocate. And they are usually very forgiving in that you can either prepare in advance for going on expeditions or forage somewhat in the environment.
But lately I've had an itch that I think can only be scratched by a game that is vast and varied, and requires a lot of traveling back and forth between biomes, to where it makes sense to build satellite locations. Places where maybe you don't need all the advanced stuff you have at the main base, but having a place to rest, resupply, or engage in a bit of infrastructure means not having to travel all the way back to your origin.
I've played a number of games where there's technically the option to have multiple bases but never any gameplay aspect that requires it. Subnautica, but the submersibles are fast and provide plenty of utility on their own. Enshrouded, but with each base allowing fast travel there's no point in decentralization. Abiotic Factor comes close, but since your base is centered around your workbench and the workbench provides a rough safe zone with no enemy spawns, satellite locations are prone to attack when you're not around.
Oddly enough, one comparison I'm tempted to make is Dead Space 3, on the section where you have to traverse the surface of Tau Volantis with a malfunctioning helmet, forcing you to take shelter in warm areas stationed along the path. There's also Death Stranding (which I haven't played) with the emphasis on building roads, ziplines, and other things to make going across the map less cumbersome as time goes on.
Something like a solo colony sim, where you can venture out to a resource vein, mine something, store it locally, then load it up on your main transport to take back to your main base. Perhaps later on you can automate the process so that you only have to stop by to pick up the resources, take a nap in your shelter, and drive back. Or something like having to build a geothermal plant in a volcanic area that you can then connect to a pipeline that sends power to your other bases.
Any games like that?

2024.05.18 21:24 takeaccountability41 My theory for the deep north

WARNING ITS LONG.
Here are my ideas for the deep north and what I think it will be like
It’ll be similar to the Ashlands, where it will most likely be cut off from the sea and you’ll have to sail there, you’ll have to navigate icebergs, big and small and once you land there you’ll have to deal with cracks in the ice that you’ll have to navigate or create platforms to get across from place to place however, these gaps are not large, and can be jumped across with some difficulty but some gaps will need to be crossed using other methods of which there are many, similar to the lava, you will not want to enter the frigid cold waters of the deep north. There will be large mountainous terrain, large portions of flat land similar to the Plains, large rocks similar to the mist lands, combining a lot of aspects from multiple biomes and a lot of stuff, they’ve learned from the previous biomes when making the game to create this final one, because it has to be different from anything else and not just like the mountains.
The storms will be dangerous because it will slow you down and you won’t be able to see much because of the snowstorm Very similar to the mist in the mist lands, there will be portions of the land in the deep north that will have deep snow similar to the water in the swamp, which will make your movements sluggish, and if you go deep enough in the deep snow, you won’t be able to attack properly or at all if too deep.
I feel like in the deep north there will be even more worship for a god or something or someone then other biomes like the Ashlands had so for that reason, I think will see a lot of temples and ruins of worship as well
I personally think the boss will be different than any other boss we’ve fought before and for that reason, I think it will most likely be a serpent of some kind, and the mechanics, for it will use a similar item to the balsalt bomb To create new platforms to stand on, that the boss will break, however if the boss runs into enough of these platforms that you create, it will be stunned allowing for Melee, which is what it will be weak against the most, and it will be resistant to Pierce so that it is possible to kill it with ranged attacks, but it won’t be the most fast or effective way and you’ll want to use the mechanics of stunning it to take it down quicker.
It’ll have attacks which include ranged attacks, A whirlpool attack, charging attacks, wave attacks to knock you off your platform into the water, where you would end up getting damaged if you stay long enough in it and a frost debuff 5sec even if you get out quickly.
New accessory Belt of Eternal Emerald Flame craft by using the megingjord & the new boss item from the Ashland to keep you warm in the deep north without it, you freeze to death, it’ll be similar to the strength belt already in the game but you’ll be able to upgrade it later by unlocking a new crafting upgrade for the black forge in the deep north by using the gems to add new powers based on your Play style.
The blood gem will give you increased defense the lower your health is by 0.2%
Ancient lords belt The jade gem I will give you 100% stamina regen when you apply a Immobilized affect
Storm lords belt The lightning gem Will give you 100% eitr regen during storms, add an additional 25% to all lightning damage
Two new gems will be added an ice and a fire one
The fire gem based around attack speed and fire damage related
Ice gem based around preserving and extending the durations of buffs and ice damage related
They will add in new weapons to fill out the rest of the weapon categories that do not have gem upgrades like the atgeir, battle axes, knives, Shields and sledgehammers
which will add 20 new weapons plus an additional 4 New shields and another additional 14 new fire, and ice gemmed weapons for the previous category of weapon types from Ashland, which is not counting any new staffs or individual new weapons
They will add one brand, new armor set, but add in customized upgraded variants for the deep north armor and variants the three armor sets from the Ashland similar to the gem upgrading to provide players with more variation in their place style and builds and cool new looks
The blood gem armor set Will provide an additional 15 base health, her blood armor piece, and if wearing a full set, will bump it up to 25+ base health per armor piece
The jade gem armor set will provide a similar 15 additional base stamina, and with a full set being 25+ base stamina per piece
The lolite gem armor set will provide a similar 15 additional base eitr and increasing it to 25+ base eitr with a full set
The fire gem armor set provides a increased attack speed at the cost of increased calories giving a 5% increase to attack speed And if wearing a full set, will give you a 8.33% increase to attack speed, but will consume your food at twice the normal speed meaning your food duration is cut in half
The ice gem armor set provides a chilled slower metabolism, allowing you to maintain longer durations for your food and a longer rested buff increasing by 25% per piece and 33% for a full set
A new resource that must be harvested however, it is encased in a very thick durable layer of ice and I must be broken with a new siege weapon a flamethrower, Or if you were lucky enough to get dyrnwyn it’ll be slightly less effective at melting ice, or if you have a staff of embers, which will be the least effective method at clearing the ice.
They will also be new fortresses to conquer in the deep north which will require any of the previous siege weapons however, the new flamethrower will be more effective at breaking down specific areas of the fortress that are more weak to fire, allowing for quicker entry to the fortress, these new fortresses will have a dungeon inside them as well, more akin to a temple
There will be the Dvergr outposts there as well, holding some of the new resources
New enemies: ice golem ( slightly larger, with more variety of attacks, including a wave of ice spikes, shooting ice spikes)
Freezling spiders made of what looks to be a hard like Crystaline ice and it’s cold to the touch, they’re the size of a neck, and will run away unless attacked or approached closely enough(similar to boars), and a queen mini boss providing you their eggs, so you can breed them to Farm their silk
iceling (similar to surtlings),
woolly lox(slightly bigger and fluffier with horns, spawning in families pairs of 2-5 with a minimum of 1 parent and 1 baby, and a maximum of 2 parent and 3 babies)
The chilled(similar to the charred but they look like frozen heavily armored Draugr but move much slower, but are capable of very fast bursts of speed to catch you off guard with more erratic movements, making them more unpredictable, also able to phase out into particles of snow, and then reappear closer to you ready to attack) Variants include a great sword and great shield commander variant, A crossbow variant, and a standard battle axe variant.
The commander can rally his troops that are at 20% Hp to provide healing similar to the gray dwarf shaman, but is capable of being interrupted, if hit hard enough resulting in low morale debuff to his troops, reducing their damage, and attacking less frequently by 25%
Phantoms (similar to ghosts and wraiths but more dangerous wielding a sword and capable of magic, however have a weakness they guard their remains slightly below the ground, if located using the wishbone and unearthing their remains allowing for an easy kill)
A new Miniboss providing you with a new tame being the woolly lox. The Miniboss will be a alpha version of the woolly lox where you enter a ruined building It was using as its home to gain access to its children and new food, which can be tamed so you can start breeding them, and a rare new plantable food frost berries that the alpha woolly lox left to feed her kids, which you can now plant to now used to tame other baby woolly lox aswell and cooking recipes, and you can also milk your woolly lox’s too
A new serpent, based off the hatchlings of the new boss serpent similar to the Drake hatchlings of Moder which will roam the seas of the deep north
Adolescent Drake hatchlings about 2 to 3 times bigger than the ones you seen the mountain and are also the children of moder but have grown up more and have moved to the deep north, they can also land on the ground and do attacks similar to moder
A new food resource that you mine: salt
New lighting options using each of the gems also a variety of candles,
A new king size bed,
A new chest providing one extra row on the bottom, or being the same storage size as a black metal chest but smaller allowing for more to be placed in a similar area,
A new chair,
A new bench and throne,
A new table,
more color variety for banners with more colors and shapes,
three new rugs woolly lox rug, chilled fortress rug, ????,
more gold decorations to bling bling up your base,
New shotgun staffs for each element,
New pots or vases,
More flametal building pieces like a smaller door and variants of all the grausten pillars and beams,
New spike walls,
New foods,
New potions,
New arrows
A new portal that allows for the transportation of tames,
New ornaments to put on your buildings, new ones preferably made of metal
A new smaller windmill that doesn’t have to be outside that uses dvergr Technology to run without needing wind, and is able to hold more barley

On my quest for a cherry blossom biome with a warm ocean nearby I found this: Snowy mountains circle with a cherry blossom biome in the middle which is also surrounded by more cherry blossom. There are many gorgeous mountainscapes around that mountain The main mountain has lots of ravines and dripstone caverns shredding through it There are villages nearby too! I hope someone enjoys! It seemed special to me Seed: 8012901007240177655 coords: approximately -3888 130 3400 edit added pic of the landbridge the huge south biome has :)

2024.05.18 15:10 AdAdventurous8517 World generation

Hi everyone, I'm new to Rimworld (20h) but I can't get into it. I enjoy the game, but the world generation is a game breaker for me. The world's look so ugly and unrealistic. Is there any way to get earth like planets? With archipelagos, mountain areas, continents, realistic and fitting biomes? And not this one big blob continent... Sitting here for 2 hours now generating world's :(

Hi, I've looked at what's planned for updates. Something that catches my interest is the server gameplay settings. Is it creative mode / build modes? I hope so :D

2024.05.18 10:54 Immediate-Light-9662 I just got "floxed".

I don't know where to tell anyone this but I just thought I would type it here instead of the subreddit for getting floxed since I have been through a similar symptom like this. Getting floxed means you have an adverse reaction to ciprofloxacin or any fluoroquinolone which is an anti-biotic. Right now it's severe insomnia but I think it's going to get worse. I recently started meditating and it helps to notice the same patterns I had when I had these symptoms in my previous state of mind but those were not big pharma- induced. I was getting paranoid but I just understood none of my paranoid claims had any substance to them so I just zip by. I just wanted to say that this is why medication needs to be tailored to specific individuals based on their needs and not just work on a trickle system where humans are measured in statistics like a group of rats in a lab. I am bracing for impact for a few months of pain now and I will try to meditate as much as I can. One thing I noticed is that the men that were affected were extremely healthy and athletic men which I can categorize myself in and the fact that Doctors just prescribe this literal fucking NUKE to the gut biome is insane to me. I hope I recover soon and I was such on a streak of being productive and I even wrote a comment here trying to help people and just when things were getting better shit hits the fan. But as I say, when it's about to get easier, it gets harder.

Black tea is the most popular tea in the world. Unlike green tea, which is light and herbaceous, black tea has a richer and sweeter taste. As with fine wines, many variables combine to give each black tea its own unique flavor profile. These factors include the climate and altitude at which the Camellia sinensis plant was grown, how it was fertilized, the degree of oxidation that may have occurred during heat treatment, and how the leaves were cut and packaged.
Black tea flavors include smoky, earthy, spicy, nutty, citrus, caramel, fruity, and honey.
1. English Breakfast Tea
Drinking a mixture of strong black teas for breakfast is a British custom. The tradition began sometime in the mid-19th century. The exact selection of black teas used in breakfast tea blends can vary greatly, but popular options include Assam, Ceylon, and Kenya black teas. More expensive varieties use Keemun black tea from China, which has a slight taste of wine, fruit and pine.
English breakfast tea requires strong brewing, as is customary in England, and goes well with milk and sweeteners.
2. Earl Gray
Another world famous tea that first became popular in England. It is said that in the 1830s, British Prime Minister Charles Gray received a gift of black tea flavored with bergamot oil from the Chinese envoy.
Orange bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus tree with winter flowers that grows primarily in Calabria, Italy. Bergamot oil imparts a bright, delicate, citrusy flavor with floral undertones that complements the bold and assertive character of black tea. Many commercial varieties today use artificial flavors instead of real bergamot. If you want to taste real Earl Grey, stick to high-quality organic blends that use only natural flavors.
Another good reason to drink Earl Gray tea is that, unlike most black teas, it contains antioxidants thanks to the addition of bergamot oil. The antioxidant (catechin) content is the main reason why green teas have received much more positive press than black teas over the years.
Antioxidants help get rid of free radicals in the body, which also helps support your immune system. With this tea, you may get the best of both the antioxidant properties of bergamot and the prebiotic properties of black tea. It’s a win-win combination!
Flavored with delicate notes of bergamot oil, Earl Gray is also the ideal base for delicious iced teas and lattes.
3. Assam Black Tea
Assam black tea is named after the Indian region. This tea is relatively new. Tea production in India began only about 200 years ago. In the 1830s, British business interests saw an opportunity to compete with Chinese tea producers, so they moved British tea production to India. Since then, Assam has become the world’s largest tea producing region.
Assam black tea grows primarily at or near sea level. The tropical climate and high rainfall, unique terroir, and processing methods give this variety of black tea a unique chocolate aftertaste. The taste can range from fresh, smoky, earthy, musky and strong to lighter with chocolate, cocoa or even sweet and spicy notes.
Assam tea is a common ingredient in tea blends, used to provide a stronger base and depth.
A cup of Assam tea can help strengthen the immune system. Black tea contains antioxidants that are beneficial for overall health. It also contains the highest levels of calcium, iron, magnesium and copper.
You can simply drink Assamese black tea or add honey and some nut milk.
4. Darjeeling Black Tea
Darjeeling tea can only be found in the highland town of Darjeeling in India, West Bengal. Some call Darjeeling black tea the “champagne of tea” for its delicate, fruity and floral notes.
Tea is unique in that the leaves can be processed in different ways, resulting in black, green, white or oolong tea.
However, the character of this black tea can vary depending on when it was picked.
Teas are sorted according to the size and quality of the tea leaves. Four categories of tea leaves are sorted: whole tea leaves, broken leaves, fan leaves and dust. Whole leaves are the highest grade, and dust is the lowest. Fannings are small particles of leaves that are used in tea bags, and tea dust is essentially the waste left behind by tea leaves. Tea Darjeeling first harvest: Harvested in the spring after the winter break. The color of the tea is light and pure. The tea leaves have a bright and distinct floral aroma. Due to their freshness and color, first flush teas are usually more expensive than others.
Second flush Darjeeling tea: has a dark amber color and a strong aroma, unlike first flush tea. The tea leaves have a purple tinge and may have a fruity flavor. Many tea testers around the world compare the taste of the second harvest with muscat grapes. The distinct aroma is due to a combination of unique weather, topography and plant types. Some tea connoisseurs prefer the second flush because of this unique aroma.
Third Flush Darjeeling Tea: After brewing, the resulting tea is dark or copper in color. Darjeeling’s autumn leaves are larger than other seasons. This type of tea usually costs slightly less than first and second flush teas.
Intermediate tea: Typically has characteristics similar to those of the first flush, but is often slightly lower in quality.
Darjeeling black tea is best served as is, without adding milk or sugar, and drunk in the morning. If you have a sensitive stomach, do not drink Darjeeling tea on an empty stomach.
5. Keemun Black Tea
Keemun is a special variety of black tea grown in Anhui Province in eastern China. He is also known as Qi Men Hong Cha. Compared to other black teas, it dries and oxidizes over a longer period of time.
This black tea is quite new, having been produced since 1875. An unfortunate civil servant from the Qimen region named Yu Ganchen decided to travel to Fujian Province, which is one of the most famous tea growing areas in China, to learn all about black tea production.
He used this knowledge to start producing black tea in his home region, where previously only green tea was produced. His new tea was a huge success in China and soon became famous in England. Even today it is a key ingredient in many English breakfast tea blends.
This organic loose leaf tea is made from medium sized rolled leaves. When brewed, it acquires a transparent bright red color. It has a soft, slightly roasted taste and a sweet, juicy aftertaste. Because of these qualities, kimuns are often compared to Burgundy wines.
The production of this tea requires a rather complex process, which is perhaps one of the reasons why this tea is so highly prized.
The leaves are collected only in spring and summer, and only the buds with the top two or three leaves are used. Even after harvesting, the leaves are sorted by hand and only the best are selected for further processing.
Keemun connoisseurs love it for its soft, complex aroma and taste, which includes notes of fruit, flowers, pine, tobacco and unsweetened cocoa.
You can enjoy it plain or with limited amounts of nut milk and honey
6. Yunnan (Yunnan Black Tea)
Yunnan black tea comes from the Yunnan province of China. Also known as “Dian Hong” (Dian is the short name for Yunnan province, “hong” means red, and when brewed it produces a coppery orange drink instead of the brown or black you might be used to). Fully oxidized tea grown high in the mountainous region of Linkang at an altitude of 1680-1900 m above sea level. Due to the highlands and mild climate, the growing season in the province is long, with harvesting occurring from March to November.
The Yunnan has a light smoky aroma and has layers of caramel and cocoa with a hint of pepper on the finish.
One thing that sets it apart from most other black teas is the high concentration of tender leaf buds known as “golden tips.”
It is recommended to use 3.5 g of tea per 200 ml of water and leave to infuse for 3 minutes. At this point, the drink will turn a deep dark red color and the room will be filled with a sweet, smoky aroma. It can also be drunk with milk.
7. Nilgiri
Nilgiri tea is grown in the southern Western Ghats, in the hills of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The word “Nilgiri” comes from Sanskrit, which means “blue hill”. Here, once every 7-12 years, the unique purple-blue flowers of Kurinji bloom and cover the landscape with bright colors.
Tea is grown at an altitude of 1000 to 2500 meters above sea level. Altitude, combined with cool air and moderate sun, slows the growth of tea plants, allowing the aromas in the leaves to intensify. This is why Nilgiri tea is known throughout the world as one of the most aromatic teas, slightly sweet, medium in body and containing hints of fruit.
These teas have a golden yellow color and a well-balanced taste. You may find them slightly spicy with a nutty aftertaste. This makes them ideal for making tea blends, so they can be drunk with sugar and cream.
There is Nilgiri frost tea, the leaves of which are collected in winter. This special tea has a pink and sweet taste, and many compare it to ice wine.
How to store tea
Tea is a food product and is subject to spoilage, like other products. The main enemies of tea are sunlight, oxygen, moisture and foreign odors. You won’t be poisoned by old tea, it will just be tasteless. During long-term storage, tea loses primarily its aroma. To preserve tea longer, it is stored in an airtight, opaque container, in a dry, dark room, away from any pungent substances.
In China, it is common to store tea packaged in sealed portion bags using a vacuum in the refrigerator at a temperature of +4°. This way you can preserve tea for up to 3 years.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Deals on Cheap Land
5 Tips for Finding the Best Deals on Cheap Land
5 Pointers for Discovering the Greatest Offers on Inexpensive PropertyIf you’re hunting for low-cost land, several factors are crucial to ensure you're securing the optimal bargain. Whether you seek land for construction, investment, or simply as an escape from urban life, our tips can assist you in finding a suitable piece of land on a budget.Tip #1: Investigate the RegionBefore procuring cheap land, conduct thorough research on the land's locality. This includes exploring the local economy, employment opportunities, and overall area development. A burgeoning area could signify an appreciating land value, while a declining area may offer lower land prices but limited growth potential. In addition to the local economy, consider the natural characteristics of the land. Is it adjacent to a river, lake, or mountains? Is the soil suitable for cultivation? These natural attributes can augment the land's value and desirability.Furthermore, it is crucial to acquaint yourself with local zoning laws and regulations. Affordable land is not a good deal if it cannot be used for its intended purpose. Familiarize yourself with local regulations to ensure that the land suits your requirements.Tip #2: Explore Foreclosures and AuctionsConsider acquiring land through foreclosure auctions as a means to find economical land. Foreclosures involve properties reclaimed by lenders due to owners' non-payment. Through foreclosure auctions, you may find land at significantly discounted prices compared to market value.Prior to participating in foreclosure auctions, conduct thorough due diligence on the property's value, potential risks, and auction process. Seek professional advice if required, as auctions can pose certain risks.Tip #3: Seek Undeveloped or Unimproved Land Opt for undeveloped or unimproved land to find affordable property. Such land is often less costly than developed land as it may lack utilities, roads, or infrastructure. Engaging in necessary groundwork, undeveloped land can offer promising investment prospects. When contemplating undeveloped land, consider the costs of development including bringing in utilities, constructing roads, and acquiring permits. Despite these costs, undeveloped land's overall price is typically lower. By weighing the costs against potential returns, you can assess the suitability of undeveloped land.Tip #4: Haggling with SellersWhen scouting for low-cost land, not only seek the best deals but also negotiate with sellers for the desired price. Many sellers are open to negotiation, especially for properties on the market for extended periods or if they are motivated to sell. Armed with knowledge of the land's market value, negotiation can enhance your chances of securing a beneficial deal.In addition to the purchase price, consider negotiating other expenses such as closing costs and seller financing. Mitigating closing costs and favorable financing terms can render the purchase more affordable, especially if a lump sum upfront payment is challenging.Tip #5: Engage with a Property ProfessionalTo identify the finest bargains on inexpensive land, collaborate with a property professional. They can aid in navigating the complexities of land procurement, from research to negotiation. Their expertise and market acumen can assist in finding suitable options within your budget and requirements. When engaging a property professional, opt for someone experienced in land sales with a comprehensive understanding of the local market. Seek expertise in zoning laws, land development, and other factors influencing land value and potential. With their guidance, you can unearth advantageous deals on affordable land and ensure a prudent investment.ConclusionDiscovering exceptional offers on low-cost land entails thorough research, considering foreclosure auctions, exploring undeveloped land, negotiation, and collaborating with property professionals. With thoughtful deliberation and a strategic approach, you can secure an astute investment in affordable land that aligns with your needs and promises long-term value.

Training

My last marathon was Toronto back in October, where I ran 3:34 (race report here).
I mostly followed whatever Garmin's auto-suggested runs were. My goal since last summer has primarily been to improve my aerobic pace with Z2 running. Comparing my HR during runs now to last year seems to indicate I've seen a lot of improvement there, and I can feel that. Another goal of mine since my last race was to work on strength after having issues with my adductors and glute, but I don't think I quite followed through on that. For the first few months of the year I was okay about going to the gym and doing leg curls, split squats, and core work, but I kind of fell out of the habit eventually. I also went to a few strength training classes that would leave me sore for several days, but I need to do that more often to really build on it; I did feel my hamstrings were stronger from doing deadlifts and step-downs.
In some of my long runs I wore a vest and had the idea that maybe I'll carry a vest during the race this time so that I could always have hydration and even add some pomegranate juice/coconut water to a flask for easy access to carbs and electrolytes. This worked well, but I ultimately decided after the training runs that the bouncing would be too annoying, I would sweat more because of the vest, and I am pretty good about drinking lots of water outside of running.
I didn't do a lot of speed work in my training, but when I did up the intensity, I noticed I would sometimes feel some tightness on the right side of my chest, which is an issue I had in high school. At the time I was worried it was a heart issue, but I got a lot of tests done to indicate there were no issues. The issue is that I don't change up how I breathe between easy runs (long, slow breaths) and hard runs. I think I need to breathe more intensely to avoid diaphragm tightness, and more speed training will help with that.
My shoe rotation was Saucony Triumph 20s as my daily trainers, Kinvara 13s as my speed shoe, and I picked up a pair of Endorphin Speed 3s from Winners for $60 a few months ago which I've been using for speed and long runs, which complement my Endorphin Pro 3 race shoes.
My Garmin race prediction was 3:19. My personal feeling was that I could achieve that goal if it was a flat race, but I was skeptical on how I would perform on the course. I looked up other race reviews, watched a video of the race, and tried to think about how I would handle the hills, but knew that I didn't have enough experience to not have it be a factor.

Pre-race

Flight and Expo

Two Fridays before the race I did Anaerobic intervals and that was probably a mistake because my adductor was sore for over 4 days after that. I probably still felt the effects of that on race day.
I did my 5k shakeout run in my race shoes Friday morning. I had leftover pasta before leaving for the airport in the late afternoon. I flew to Vancouver on in the evening, arriving at night.
On Saturday, I went to the grocery store immediately after waking up since it was closed after we arrived the night before. The main things I got for myself that were race-relevant were gluten free quick oats, coconut water, apple and orange juice, honey, sunflower seed butter, soy milk, and a carton of cold brew coffee.
I went to the expo to get my bib before we got lunch in Gastown. We went to MeeT, and I got the Philly Cheezesteak Poutine and Oyster Mushroom Calamari which I shared with my GF. They had an issue with my friend's order so they offered him a free dessert which he was nice enough to share, so I got to have a bit of his brownie too!
After lunch I recommended everyone check out Stanley Park on their own so I could go home and rest my legs. I stopped by Nesters to pick up a GF Caulipower Pizza for dinner to have with some juice. My blood sugar spiked from the poutine at lunch, so I took some insulin to correct that, pre-emptively took insulin for the pizza I was about to have, and took a nap. After that, I put the pizza in the AirBnB's toaster oven (on top of some foil to avoid cross-contamination), but this ended up being a mistake. We discovered later in the week that the toaster oven stops working after a minute or two. When I ate my pizza I noticed it was a bit soft but figured it may have just been the texture: now I know it was likely undercooked, and I feel stupid for not realizing that.

Race Day

The start time for the marathon was 8:30am and I was in the first corral. I woke up at 5:30am and had my oatmeal (quick oats microwaved in water, a spoon of sunflower seed butter, splash of soy milk, superseed blend (chia, hemp, and toasted buckwheat groats), and honey), and a tall glass of cold brew coffee + soy milk. Shortly after waking up I realized I had an upset stomach, so naturally I started feeling stressed that I would have GI issues during the race (see comments about the pizza above). We worried that I may have accidentally ingested gluten due to my group of 7 having gluten in my vicinity, not realizing it was probably the pizza. I had to use the washroom a few times, and hoped it would pass. I had a 500ml bottle of nuun with water mixed with orange juice that I sipped on for the next hour since I saw a Ben Parker video where he did that. Thankfully I wasn't stuck in the bathroom all morning, but I was worried I would feel sick during the race.
With me I brought:
I was staying in Mount Pleasant and wasn't close to a SkyTrain station. It would have been a 45 minute walk to the start line, but I intended to walk to Main Street and take the 8am bus going south (I originally meant to take the 7:45 bus but my stomach problems delayed my exit). I got to the stop at 7:55, saw a bus approach a few minutes later thinking it was mine, but it said "Sorry, not in service." Oh well, I thought, it'll probably come in a minute. A few minutes pass and no bus came. A different one did that wasn't the one I needed to take. I checked the Transit app and the bus I needed to get on was showing as having already passed. I guess it was the "not in service" one? Maybe it was full? I asked some people at the bus stop who looked like they were spectators, and they were also confused. We ended up walking from there, but I jogged since I needed to get to the start line with some time to spare. During the jog I could tell that my muscles were really tight, which didn't give me a lot of confidence about how the race would do go. I still made it to the start area around 8:15. I stood in line at one of the porta-potties and did my dynamic warm-up routine while waiting. I just made it out of there at 8:28 and rushed over to the start line while gobbling down on my Honey Stinger Waffle and taking a bit of insulin since my blood sugar was already a bit high. Unfortunately, I hastily got into the start line area wherever I could, and I ended up 3 or 4 corrals after the first. I tried as hard as I could to squeeze between people as politely as possible to try and get to my corral. Unfortunately I just missed it, so I ended up being at the front of the 2nd corral, which was fine given what my final time was; I just wish I hadn't wasted energy trying to rush to the front around everyone.

Race

1-6

I started feeling pretty strong, but I also know that my HR takes some time to go up when I start my runs, so I knew I would get cocky in the beginning. My dynamic warm up helped loosen up my glutes and hips, which I was worried about when I jogged to the start line, but immediately when the run started I could feel tightness in my hamstring. Not a great sign but I tried not to focus on it and accept that it's race time so I'll just have to do my best.
I was worried about the hills going in because I didn't do a lot of hill training, and I suck at running down hills. I understand that I simultaneously shouldn't run downhill too quickly to avoid bonking later on, but I also need to use the steady downhills to make up for the time I was going to lose on the climb at Cambie. I went to my physio a few weeks before the race and told her about how I feel tightness in my knee when I run downhill; she helped make adjustments and gave me exercises to do to help my knee feel more comfortable on downhills; they definitely helped, but I still don't have the right technique for running downhill optimally in a way that doesn't cause me to waste energy slowing myself down. I was a little bit ahead of pace by the time I got to the dreaded hill.

7-13

The hill obviously sucked, but that was expected. It was stressful to go slow and have my heart rate go so high, but I tried to keep a consistent cadence going up. At the top of the hill I had a hard time bringing my HR down while maintaining a decent pace. It looks like it took me a few miles after the sharp ascent before I got back to target pace. My hamstring hurting didn't help with this.
The scenery was beautiful and hearing all the positivity around me helped keep my spirits up. After having a gel and trying to pick up the pace a bit I could feel my stomach starting to rumble, so I took one of my gravols and slowed down. I figured they take time to have effect so I wanted to take them early.
I spent a lot of the race alone, which was nice when I would pass by spectators calling my name. It was nice to hear people cheering me on and comment how I wasn't even breaking a sweat. There was a jazz band playing before we arrived at UBC which was awesome to hear.
Right before the halfway mark was a steep downhill. I tried my best to avoid speeding up too much because there was still a lot of race to go. The views of the mountains at the turn were beautiful.

14-21

I started feeling a bit discouraged because my heart rate was in the 170s even though I wasn't going too fast, but my legs were still hurting from the beginning. I read online about how the Burrard Street bridge is brutal and the part of the race where many people hit the wall, so my mind was entirely on that. I also asked my friends to be at the bridge; they already had to go downtown at 9am to see the half marathoners finish and to get one of the people staying with us to his 8k start line at 9:30am. I didn't check my phone during the race but I would see Whatsapp notifications pop up on my watch, and it gave me motivation to see that they were on the way, and also comment on how fast I was going :)
I don't think I had trouble going through the bridge, which motivated me. I also saw a notification saying "we are at the end of the bridge" so I was prepared for that. I saw my friends, gave them a high five, and picked up my pace probably a bit too much 😅
I felt strong going into Stanley Park, but read about how it could be brutal, and was nervous about my HR being in the high 170s already.

21 - Finish

I was mentally prepared for Stanley Park. I was expecting it to be completely dead, but that was not the case for the first half of the Seawall with the aid and cheer stations. The second-half was definitely quiet, but I had my Shokz on playing some music that was fitting for the scenery (Amenra and Septicflesh). It was a bit hard to pick up the pace as the course was a bit tight but I was able to do so. I saw some bloodshed though; one woman was completely covered in a foil blanket with a vested individual standing over her on his phone, one man on a bench with his arm dangling who may have been unresponsive, with some staff rushing back in his direction after I passed him, and one person who started cramping, moved to the side yelling "Fuck!" I yelled at him "You got his!" but immediately realized that maybe those weren't the right words for someone who was cramping up. Not sure what I should have said, though. I started cramping up a tiny bit, my pump was complaining that my blood sugar was dropping, and so I decided to take a gel because I figured it had some electrolytes, and it had been a half hour since my last one. In retrospect I think perhaps a salt tab would have been more useful, but I didn't want to do anything new on race day, even if I only had just over a mile left.
After we left Stanley Park, I felt fine enough to kick up the pace. I saw my friends during the finish and they got some great pictures of me. I was disappointed at how close I was to not PB'ing but at least I reached that milestone. Finishing strong had me feeling like I was holding back elsewhere during the race.

Post-race

I got my medal and felt fine walking to bag check. I picked up a banana and a bottle of the fancy bottled water on the way. I felt sad passing by the sandwiches I couldn't eat. There were also bags of chips that I feel really stupid for skipping. For some reason I scanned the bag for a GF label, but I found out a week later that the brand they had was gluten-free: the GF logo was on the top left, and for some reason I didn't check there.
I passed by a change tent on the way, so I went back there after getting my bag. I put on my hoodie, while bending down to take off my shoes my right adductor started cramping very intensely. I asked someone who was sitting close to me if I could steal their chair and I sat down. I text my friends letting them know I'm in the tent but had a crazy cramp and so was going to take some time to get up. I munched on the banana I had and took a salt cap that I thankfully still had on me. It felt like it took forever but it was probably only 10 minutes until I was able to stand up and lean against a table again to continue putting on my joggers and sandals. It was raining lightly, which was a bit annoying since I was wearing socks with sandals, but it wasn't too heavy. I met up with my friends, got some pictures, and we headed out.
Unfortunately, one of my friends in the group was made aware on Little Red Book that the Lululemon stores downtown had a deal for that day only to get 20% off our purchase if you show your medal/bib. We ended up going to Lululemon 3 times because I'm bad at saying no, so it took a while to get home. We did go to Nuba in Yaletown for lunch which was really good. That night we went to East is East for dinner, which was nice, though in hindsight I should have realized that the loud music made it not the best choice when what I wanted was to feel relaxed and cozy.
We stayed in Vancouver for an extra week and we flew back on the 12th. It was a wonderful stay and I felt depressed coming back. I wish I could have gone on more hikes and even gone trail running through all the beautiful trails in the area.

Retrospective

Looking Forward

I definitely feel like I can PB by a significant margin if I have more discipline in my training, sleep better, and avoid the race day issues I faced. I am still deciding where to do a Fall marathon though. I am trying to weight between what would be a fun race, what would be a good place to travel to and stay for some time after the race, and what would not be too tough of a course. I'm considering the following so far:
Upcoming local races I'm signed up for are a 10k in June by the waterfront, and a 10k in September on the Toronto Island. I would like to see how close I can get to 40 minutes if I wore my Endorphin Speed 3s. I'm hoping to pick training back up this week, but not ramp up too quickly.
I also want to sign up for trail races because trail running is fun. It's unfortunate how it's hard to participate without relying on a car, though.
I may do the Presidio Half Marathon in San Francisco at the end of June; I was offered free registration so long as I record and upload the race as I did for the San Francisco Marathon; it looks like flights to the area area bit pricey at this time though, so even if I stay with a friend it might be a bit too much right now.

Inspiration..and he’s not happy
As I’ve been working through my collection after it’s been stowed away for several years I keep staring at this issue. Around the time this came out I was 7-8 years old. Brilliant marketing move by Marvel. Pulled me in. Secret Wars the books, the toys, it got me. And I can reflect now and safely say this cover is my all-time favorite taking into account all the factors outside of just the art. The nostalgia of it is huge. Every time I see it I’m taken back to the years of becoming a comic book fan. The feels I get thinking about The Hulk holding up a mountain. It’s amazing. And w/o a doubt why I’m a super fan of the character. Every cover of the Secret Wars is iconic. I can’t believe we’re going to get a movie even though it’s based on the latest SW run. This series deserves all the love and praise imo.

2024.05.18 01:49 dFiddler84 Recs for Europe in July.....I know it's a terrible idea but hear me out

I'm headed to Tomorrowland in the middle of July and we have in the past tacked on vacation days before or after the festival. I, like most travelers, despise the busy season in most destinations(I even live in a tourist town, Jackson Hole). It the busiest, hottest, and most expensive time of the year. But alas we have the extra time off of work and want to go somewhere for 4 nights before headed to Amsterdam then onto Antwerp. I few factors we are looking for * direct flights to Schiphol(inbound access isn't important as I work for an airline) * not looking to do the most popular big european cities...been there done that * something a little more off the beaten path...a plus if it has beaches of any kind * not atrociously expensive, I'm thinking 250 euro a night for a decent place to stay * good food * don't mind renting a car and exploring * decent value for the money(considering the time of year) * relaxing destination(small town, beaches or mountains)
Places currently on my radar are San Sebastian, Hebrides in Scotland, Turkey and Greece(probably mainland).
