I've played only the first game, then the Ezio Trilogy (i had a glimpse of Black Flag and Odyssey in my friend's house but didn't play deeply), and now i finished the main story in Origins and WOW, WHAT A GAME.
First of all, Bayek is an awesome character, he has a heart of gold but he is BRUTAL AS HELL, i loved his angry moments. I also liked how he related to children, the fact that >! his son was murdered!< clearly left a hole, so i see him almost adopting some children he helps in some side quests, and this is very clear in the Shadya incident.
I loved the setting, the timing was perfect, we were allowed to see egyptian, greek and roman cultures. It also allowed us to see figures as Ceasar and Cleopatra.
Aya has little play time, but she is a great character. When i arrived in rome and saw the date as THE IDES OF MARCH it gave me chills because i knew where the game was leading me, and i was right. This classic historical event >! assassination of ceasar!< is perfect for an AC game, and i was hoping for that since the Assassin's tombs in Monterrigioni in AC2.
Speaking of Monterrigioni, now that i know that Aya is Amunet I kinda know what is going to happen because i remember the tomb description in AC2. But I'm still interested because I'm looking foward to see HOW it will evolve.
About the world: It is simply beautiful, rich, and DENSE. I found myself roaming randomly trough the desert or the mountains and BAM I found a tomb, and when i enter the tomb i got those cryptical isu messages that has a whole mistery aura. Not to mention that we have variety, the deserts contrasting to the marble city of alexandria, contrasting with the lush green scenery of cyrenaica. It is a beautiful world.
The Ezio games will always have a special place in my heart with all respects, but I think I can say this is the best AC game I've ever played. And you know the feeling that you already felt the best and now you will never experience anything bigger than that? That's how I'm feeling. I hope i'm wrong, i still have a lot of games to play, The Colonial Trilogy, Unity, Syndicate, the other RPGs... I intend to appreciate all of them in due time.
Now I have 2 DLCS ready to play (people say that hidden ones is pretty good), and a lot of the world in Egypt left to explore, I didn't go to the arena in Cyrene, didn't face the elephants, there are regions unexplored like the sand sea and the desheret desert, not to mention the stone circles, the sphinx and the pyramids.
What should i do first? Start Hidden Ones DLC or finish exploring all of Egypt first?

I’ll go first: I’m on my 3rd? reread of the series and I haven’t gotten this far yet but one of the last chapters in RoW “One Final Gift” makes me cry every time I listen to it. Eshonai fights so hard and wins her fight against Odiums influence, but losses her battle for survival, while swearing her first ideal. She has one of those rare moments of one heavily invested at the time of death and therefore, persists as a cognitive shadow for a few minutes after the end. Her short conversation with the stormfather is heart wrenching, he doesn’t lie to her but he does show her pity or maybe even mercy, and blesses her with the greatest gift she could’ve gotten, to see. To see it all in a rush as the storms do, ride across the land at the speed of the winds, becoming the winds. I’m happy her soul found peace before moving to the beyond. She deserved better than to die alone at the bottom of a chasm though, an honorable warrior and the great protector of the listeners, the great general who wanted nothing more than to see the next hill. I can cry right now thinking about it.

I (31F) have been married to my (32M) husband for 6 years, we have been together for 10. We seem to continuously have the same argument, he is not emotionally available for me and I am too "needy" and "sensitive" to him. I complain about this often, as I have felt neglected and unloved for a while now. We sometimes talk about things and then our lives get better until they decline again, this has been the same cycle for years now. I often try things to get him to open up and be more considerate not just for the sake of our relationship but for the world, he can be pretty mean and is definitely a hot head which creates issues with family and work. I purchased a deck of card that has relationship questions to deepen your connection with you sig oth and he reluctantly agreed to play with me, after 4 questions or so, he just gave short answers and at the end he just "couldn't think of anything", this really hurt my feelings as this was a question regarding how he felt about me now versus when we first started dating, I told him this upset me, and he shut down, i started crying and told him I didn't want to keep playing the game. This was a week ago or so. I just let it go and moved on. We did not talk about it. Last night, we had a bbq at a friend's house, at the end of the night everyone went home besides the host/her bf, me and my husband. We had been drinking a bit so she(the host) started thanking us for coming and telling us how happy she is we came over and how she loves us, my husband quickly started reciprocating the feelings saying he had a great night, he is so thankful for our friendship, etc, we all shared a drink and talked about the success of the evening.
Now, I feel so fucking upset over this, it was difficult to watch him express his emotions so clearly and easily to other people when I have been trying for years to get him to express his love for me in any way. I have felt disconnected from him so i have asked for some sort of confirmation of our love, a card, a recording, via text, anything really, and all I get is a shrug, or a "idk what to say", or "that feels like homework". I feel like this was my breaking point after years of trying, I have not spoken to him since last night. I am so drained I honestly don't even want to start an argument and he is an avoidant and is currently nursing a hangover.
I had considered couples counseling in the past so we can work on ways to communicate better since this is a skill I feel we both lack in. He's never been thrilled about it but said he would give it a try. After last night i dont know if my marriage is salvageable anymore. I now see he can be emotional and loving but just never towards me. Im here for an outsiders perspective, am i over reacting? I've been playing ML for 5 years now and felt the repetition last year, downloaded hok last and had blast, not gonna sugar coat it but in comparison to ml, hok is more fast paste more rewarding, more punishing and more team based less than a assassin with they're support killing everybody in your team. But if not for ml I've wouldn't have been good at playing video games(idk if that's a bad thing or not). In conclusion ML is mainly for Beginners, while HoK is more on higher difficulties.

The above map's continents are about the size of north and south america, and they lie within a land known as Nowhere; a land formed entirely from the stitched together memories and beliefs of its inhabitants. The lands of The Devils’ Spine have a vibrant history of cuts and ties, of constant, irreversible change. Abound with rebirth and desolation, the current age is one of perilous technological progress, conflict, noir corruption, and gossamer silver linings. Colors of gritty despair hide just under the surface of otherwise picturesque landscapes, and with broad strokes of war and paranoia they peek through and scar the surface. The second industrial revolution, with its mix of magic and biomechanical engineering provides comforts and conveniences unknown in either the modern interwar period world or any world of medieval fantasy. Biomechanical implants allow people to accomplish feats otherwise impossible, the arcane bastille grants consciousness and the ability to cheat physical death to people born without souls, and those born with souls find themselves able to harness unique innate magic. Magic, technology, and even people are turned into tools to create railways, burn cities, commercialize advancements, build wonders, and wage war. Additionally, and very importantly, Nowhere has one core law that acts as it's foundation: What one believes to be reality is reality. If you believe there to be a mountain in the distance, there is a mountain in the distance. While this law can grant exorbitant power to bend the world, it comes with the danger of facing the horrifying and distorting backlash of having a belief that conflicts with the beliefs of those around you. Suffering this backlash can eventually lead to altered memories; you waking up to find your family is nothing at all like you remember, or that the language they speak is now alien to you. This can then snowball into more backlash that eventually distorts the target's mind and body to a point that it can no longer be considered human. She knew from my dumb little joke how I really felt. I would never say this to my spouse, but in many ways, I hate how my life turned out.
I didn't want to be tied down. I wanted to travel the world; work in Antarctica and see Japan. I wanted to cook the most amazing food I never could have dreamed of, drink the finest wines and cocktails. I wanted to be able to fuck whomever I wanted. I wanted to surround myself with people who shared my desire to live life submerged in the esoteric, beautiful, and fleeting moments.
I wanted to live like the world is ending, because every goddamned day, it seems like it is.
I have a good husband. Yeah, he's a lazy stoner stereotype, but he's a good, kind man who's a wonderful father and supportive spouse. He's also an indoor cat who's an incredibly picky eater. I also find him boring.
I mean, dude eats as if you gave a 12 year old money to buy enough food for the weekend and left him to his own devices. I'm talking frozen mini pizzas and chicken nuggets. He doesn't see the value in eating out ever, and has only ever left the comfort of home by my insistence.
I'm not unaware of my situation though. Dude told me from jump he wanted a family. He's never hidden anything from me. He was the only man I'd ever been with who never looked at me with expectation or premise in his eyes.
I picked this. I know that.
We moved here to Maine from the west coast because he missed his family. I'm from the Midwest and I don't have strong ties with my family, so it was an easy move.

David Ayer, rendered some rewrites that made the film what has become these 20-something years later. One of his changes sets the film in Los Angeles instead of New York. Scripturally, angels are messengers and there surely is a message in this film, which is a re-telling of Revelation 13 using the analogy of cars and street racing.
To sum up the message of Revelation 13 is this: The Roman Catholic Church represented by "the sea beast" (Revelation 13:1) unites with America represented by "the earth beast" (Revelation 13:11) to issue the Mark of the Beast (Revelation 13:16-18). Scripture supplies the most in-depth literature known to man and this film has become a pop-culture gem because of it. Let's look at some of the symbolism.
Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) is an allegory of the Roman Catholic Church. The name Dominic is derived from the Latin Dominicus and is a name given to boys born on Sunday. It is the root word for "Domingo" which is Spanish for Sunday. Contrary to the 7th Day Sabbath of the 4th commandment (Exodus 20:8), Catholics instituted their own day of worship, which is Sunday. The Releaux triangle is also the basic shape for the triquetra which a symbol for the Trinity. The Trinity is never mentioned in Scripture as a name for God which is important. The Trinity is a Catholic invention. The Roman Catholic Church is named as such because it absorbed practices and traditions from the Roman Empire. It was Constantine that issued the first Sunday Law; an attempt to make Sunday holy. They used to hold races in the Coliseum to honor the Roman trinity known as the Captoline Triad or the Archaic Triad. The name Trinity was coined by Tertullian, a staunch Romanist. Protestant denominations now also believe in the Trinity, significantly compromising the strength of the Protest. Is this reflected in Brian's ride? Yes. Brian drives a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The sequels, attractions, and merchandise have never ceased to roll off the assembly line. Sequels that point to Dominic as a Catholic Champion. Even in "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift", the first song to play is "Six Days" by DJ Shadow. [Refer to Exodus -11] This song puts Monday as the first day of the week making Sunday the Seventh Day, giving Sunday the appearance that it is the Sabbath of the Lord. Yes. Hi! For an event, my friend took photos on his iPhone and uploaded them to a Google Drive. I am accessing and downloading those photos now.
For documentation purposes, I need to know the exact time when some shots were taken. Downloading these photos and looking at the exif data, I can see Device Make and model (Apple iPhone 13 Pro), all the camera settings (F-number, Exposure, etc) and even the longitude and latitude. But I don’t see the time when the photo was shot. I know Apple stores it somewhere but I can find it based on the files my friend uploaded. Any ideas?

So the premise of my argument is that the mainstream concepts of race cause confusion and ultimately is the main contributor to bigotry. Because although you can still be bigoted towards someone based on their ethnicity / culture someone is still less likely to make assumptions about you based on your outwardly expressed genetic traits and be forced to talk to you first.
This also comes from a personal point of argumentation. So I am mixed, grew up in a predominantly black community, and ethnically I would say I’m “black”, but when asked what race I am I ussually default to just white or mixed as im pretty light with a looser curl pattern and colorful eyes. So now back to this ethnicity thing I have a problem that there is no better description or identifier for the culture that I am apart of other than black.
And then what about a black guy 2 generations suburbanized in a white community, or a white guy in a black community. Is the black guy white now and the white guy black?. What connects them to the other people of similar skin tones other than well, their skin tones. Like to us an Indian is an Indian or a “south Asian” but they don’t get it twisted they got Punjabi’s, Marathis, Gujaratis, Rajasthani and so on. And there are separate rate ethnic groups there that speak I was just naming the main ones.
Most of the world doesn’t have this problem and I think we should abandon this 1600s style way of looking at someone’s identity and heritage.
I don’t like Vivek Ramaswami but he made a good point after his talk with Anne coulter. I’m which he said regardless of his religion he was born in this country his parents assimilated and assimilated him into American culture and he is more American than many white Christian’s out there. In which he was basically saying he fits in better with upper white society than many white people.
I’m not saying to be colorblind but for logical conversation to be had about how unreliable someone’s features are for determining anything about their life or who they are.
Then my last point will be this, so the way it’s ussually classified in America is this, white, black, Asian, Arab, south/Central American, Native American. When Solene’s large sable orbs locked on mine, time stopped, the past five years of pain fell away. Her supple rosy lips upturned and slightly parted- the same way they had before. The same lips I fell in love with. She was beautiful, the same stand out features and subtle curves.
It felt as if gravity was pulling me closer, each step unconscious. With our toes nearly touching, every nerve ending in my body urged me to touch her, to tuck a stray strand of hair away.
“Hi.” Her voice velvety and deep, slightly hoarse.
Unsure of what to say I began to speak, “H- wh- how are you?” The future of whatever could be depended on the next few moments, and I didn’t even know where to begin.
Solene felt the same way, it was evident in her tone, “I’m well, not much has changed, I’m slightly older…” she let out a weak laugh “and Izzy is a sophomore in college. He-“.
“That’s gre-“ I began. “Sorry you go ahead.” I could feel my cheeks pinken.
“I was just going to ask if you’d like to sit and chat, I have time before my client arrives and it would be nice to talk.” Her tone was unreadable, I’d hoped she’d wanted me to say yes.

With a small smile, I duck into Solene’s office. Taking in the familiar-small- space, I smile, not much has changed. Photographs of Izzy through out the years, multiple paintings from artists all over the world, and even a few of us during the time we spent together on August Moon’s tour adorn her walls.
Leaving the door open slightly Solene sits on the small love seat she added to the room, its vintage, it suits her.
Taking a seat next to her I smile. She seems to be taking me in, inspecting closely how age and life have affected me. “How are you? I saw you on Jimmy Kimmel last week, are you enjoying the solo route?”.
“It’s been a journey of loss and gain. I didn’t know that with love comes pain, until that day five years ago. The music I’ve been writing is not just about infatuation but yearning for what was.” I realize I may be rambling and pause.
“It’s nice to see you passionate about music again, the same way it was when it was just you and your guitar.” Solene’s hand touches mine tenderly, “tell me more about it?”.
“Well, when we went our separate ways I began to see the road ahead was going to be the same as before if I let it. I could keep on as the British boy who messes about and lets everyone around him make decisions for him; or I could be who I am today. I’m finally involved in the process of my music from start to fi-“ a knock on the door brings me to a stop.
“Solene, Ms. Raphel is here. I know she’s a half an hour early, would you like me to tell her you’re in meeting?” Tracy looks pained as if she’s interrupted a super secret meeting- which she has, but it’s not the end of the world.
Solene’s eyes bounce between mine and Tracy’s “Fucking artists. They’re never on time, it’s always absurdly early or laughably late.”
Deciding for the both of us I stand up, “This is important Sol, I’ll be here as long as it takes. As long as your number is still the same, I would be more than happy to schedule something.” Tracy shuts the door slowly and leaves us alone again.
“Hayes, are you sure? I can tell her I’m in a meeting, I can’t expect you to move your busy schedule around because of my client’s inability to tell time.” Solene stands and begins shuffling papers on her desk, no matter what she says I know I’ll go to the ends of the earth for her.
Standing behind her I place my hand on her shoulder “I’ll be available whenever you are. Good luck with the new client.” I walk to the door before turning back “Oh and Solene, you’re still hot or whatever.” With those parting words I open the door leaving her blinking in shock. ————————————————————————————— As I sit on the sofa of my new flat, I’m like a teen boy again. At this point I may as well be on my knees, she still knows how to make me work for it. Leaving well enough alone I decide to go for a run. The waterside park in Santa Barbara has become my refuge-aside from my music- the waves and fresh, cool air keep me grounded.

TL;DR: PC building newb is wanting to build a PC that can handle regular tech job remote tasks, play pc games at a good frame rate (70-80), and overall run nice.
Hey everyone,
After years of not having a desktop, I decided it’s time to build a PC. I’ve never built a PC before, but being a computer science major I think it could be a good experience given that hardware is not the focus of my major; plus I just think it would be cool to say that I built my own PC. And I’ve been wanting to go back to PC for a little while now.
Keep in mind, I am completely new to this stuff, particularly what the best parts to buy are given what I’m looking for. There are multiple micro centers in my home town, but wanted to do the proper research and get a variety of opinions between micro center workers and the PC community. That way I can really make an ideal desktop for what I want.
Also, I’m sorry this is a lot. I’ve been wanting to do this for years and now that I’m committing to it, I really don’t want to mess it up all because I didn’t do the proper research. Heres some context of what I’m looking for
-Working Remote- I want to be able to sufficiently be able to work from home. Many tech jobs are beginning to follow a hybrid or even fully remote format. In the case that I run into that throughout my career (which seems very likely), I don’t want to run into any non internet connection issues that could raise issues when working remote such as freezing, or slowness due to many apps being open at once (VS code, Remote Desktop, chrome with a good amount of tabs, etc.).
-Windows (which ever version is best in case it isn’t the newest one)- probably a way too obvious thing to include but hear me out. Ive been strictly Apple and have not regularly used a windows device in 8 years. Both great operating systems in their own ways, but one of my main motivations for doing this is that I’ve realized over time that I definitely miss using Windows for many reasons. That being said, I do not know if there is a preferred version of windows 11 versus the latest one, if even the case.
-Gaming- (play just about all games at 60-70fps): Similar to using windows, another motivation I had for doing this is PC gaming. Before I stopped using windows in 2017, I had built a decent sized library on steam and was a pretty avid PC gamer but still played a little console. Switched to only console and, same as windows and mac, both are great for different reasons. But for years I’ve been itching to get back into games like Skyrim, counter strike, and the blizzard library (probably weird choices to say nowadays but remember, I’ve been out of the PC world for 8 years). Along with that, I want to try out all of the great pc games that I’ve come out since that I haven’t had the chance to play and the games that will continue to come out. Overall, I want a build that will be able to play all these titles at a consistent frame rate similar to let’s say Elden Ring on Xbox Series X, with good graphics (but not anything over the top).
-Wi-Fi support- I’m not too sure about this one, but more wanted to ask if this is worth investing into or not if it costs extra.
-Smooth- could be obvious, but I want an overall very smooth user experience. I’ve used a MacBook Pro 2020 edition for a couple years and overall I’ve been happy with the experience. But the one thing that I absolutely hate about it is how much it freezes up on me when I’m in the middle of doing something. Not necessarily very often, but it happens and it’s very annoying. I understand that this is going to become inevitable overtime, but overall I want a reliable and convenient user experience.

Sorry for the super long post, theres been a lot on my mind. Also, sorry if this is the wrong tag for this
To get down to it, I've been unable to get a therapist to start the diagnosis/evaluation process (thanks to the shitty healthcare system) of a few different disorders I suspect I have; autism, BPD and more recently, DID.
I like to think of myself as a very self-aware person who constantly psycho-analyzes both myself and those around me. I do my research and do my best to be diligent about how much my symptoms actually overlap with the symptoms of the disorder. Over the last 4-5 years I've done my research and have determined with 98% confidence that I'm autistic (especially now that my sister recently got officially diagnosed) and about 80% confident that I may have BPD.
About 2-3 years ago a very close friend of mine decided to trust me with the knowledge that they're a system, and in doing my due diligence to better understand them and what they might be going through, I dove into researching the disorder. Looking at articles, research papers, and of course; testimonies from other systems.
Over the course of doing this with the combination of my friend being almost completely open to me about what's going on in their head, how they see the world and how different alters interact with the world, I began to notice a pattern; I seemed to share a lot of the symptoms. However, I am well aware of how symptoms of different disorders can overlap with each other, even if you don't have both disorders.
I want to make it clear that I do have diagnosis for multiple disorders now, PTSD, ADHD and depression/anxiety. I always assumed all of my memory issues that I've had for as long as I can remember were due to either the ADHD or the PTSD, but recently (in the last 6ish months on and off) I've started to realize that the two disorders don't inflict the type of memory issues I have, among other things.
It's not that I "blackout" and then become conscious later on with no memory of how I got where I am or what I was doing, it's just... Things sort of move without moving. It's very difficult to explain but I'll do my best. I sort of just don't remember things, but I know the memory exists or sometimes I'll remember things that I previously couldn't, it's like a shoe cubby, sometimes the shoes are in there and sometimes it's not. One of the things that has tipped me off recently is the resurgence of an issue I had to deal with almost daily during covid, having a discussion with someone and coming to an agreement/understanding only to later, be it hours or days, not have any recollection of the conversation and having a completely different viewpoint.
I also recently have potentially begun to reach out to alters??? This one I'm not so sure about because I don't really get, errr, answers back? It's more of a presence/"feeling?" of a response or complete silence/lack of presence. In the last week or so I've noticed something slightly beyond that, I've begun to (only sometimes) notice when my head feels more "full" or "loud" and when I attempt to reach out to the presence, usually with thought, I'm met with sudden silence and the feeling of the presence moving away. And sometimes it feels as if I am communicating with someone, but I get headaches the more I try and the further into discussion about DID I go. If I am a system, I am a host who fronts 95% of the time but is co-con/co-fronting quite frequently.
I have shared this information with my friend who shared that they're a system and their response has been... mildly disconcerting. We both know how much of a mess each other are and how much co-morbidy messes with things, but they've said both that me having other dissociative disorders is likely, especially BPD since it's called "borderline" for a reason, however... They've also said that of all of the people they've talked to, I'm the only one who seems to understand their symptoms and how it affects them. And not in the academic way, the way they explained it was that I seem to understand it as if in some ways I experience it and that that's why they share with me as much of their experience as they do, because I understand. But they were very careful/gentle about how they approached this conversation as they know I've been grappling with it for a while now and they want to neither confirm or deny the possibility of me being a system as they're not qualified to give diagnosis, which I respect. But while in discussion with them about this very subject about a 3-4 weeks ago, potentially 3 different alters named themselves when previously there were no other names than the one I go by irl. They've helped me try and talk through it, to the best of their ability, giving ideas to try and establish contact/communication and it all feels so... foreign and wrong, even silly if I'm being honest. It's very frustrating as the more I try to figure it out and potentially form connections, the more confused I get.
I think I'm just wondering what other systems did/do when first being in the process of discovering they were a system. What was it like? How did you establish communication between the alters? What does communication look like for your system?

I sort of just don't remember things, but I know the memory exists or sometimes I'll remember things that I previously couldn't, it's like a shoe cubby, sometimes the shoes are in there and sometimes it's not. One of the things that has tipped me off recently is the resurgence of an issue I had to deal with almost daily during covid, having a discussion with someone and coming to an agreement/understanding only to later, be it hours or days, not have any recollection of the conversation and having a completely different viewpoint.
I also recently have potentially begun to reach out to alters??? This one I'm not so sure about because I don't really get, errr, answers back? It's more of a presence/"feeling?" of a response or complete silence/lack of presence. In the last week or so I've noticed something slightly beyond that, I've begun to (only sometimes) notice when my head feels more "full" or "loud" and when I attempt to reach out to the presence, usually with thought, I'm met with sudden silence and the feeling of the presence moving away. And sometimes it feels as if I am communicating with someone, but I get headaches the more I try and the further into discussion about DID I go. If I am a system, I am a host who fronts 95% of the time but is co-con/co-fronting quite frequently.
I have shared this information with my friend who shared that they're a system and their response has been... mildly disconcerting. We both know how much of a mess each other are and how much co-morbidy messes with things, but they've said both that me having other dissociative disorders is likely, especially BPD since it's called "borderline" for a reason, however... They've also said that of all of the people they've talked to, I'm the only one who seems to understand their symptoms and how it affects them. And not in the academic way, the way they explained it was that I seem to understand it as if in some ways I experience it and that that's why they share with me as much of their experience as they do, because I understand. But they were very careful/gentle about how they approached this conversation as they know I've been grappling with it for a while now and they want to neither confirm or deny the possibility of me being a system as they're not qualified to give diagnosis, which I respect. But while in discussion with them about this very subject about a 3-4 weeks ago, potentially 3 different alters named themselves when previously there were no other names than the one I go by irl. They've helped me try and talk through it, to the best of their ability, giving ideas to try and establish contact/communication and it all feels so... foreign and wrong, even silly if I'm being honest. It's very frustrating as the more I try to figure it out and potentially form connections, the more confused I get.
I think I'm just wondering what other systems did/do when first being in the process of discovering they were a system. What was it like? How did you establish communication between the alters? What does communication look like for your system?

I’m one of the good people, I say to myself – ah, but on the borderline, says my contrarian voice, wagging a finger at some abstract wall of my mind, on which likely hangs a mirror, making the futility of the gesture complete. At the silent Buddhist retreat, I fight the urge to sexualize every single person in the room, one by one, all day long, instead of meditate, and I resist that – but I do indeed sexualize a bit, not graphically so, just the willingness of the mind to wander, which is such a strange thing to do under any circumstance, like your mind is a restless dog that paces from room to room or like the shadows on the floor decide to leap up, make love on the ceiling. The light seems to flicker now and then when the silent retreat folks and I lean into it. I picture high school meditation teams taking on other high school meditation teams, tournaments even.
I don’t want to make too much of this, but there’s an obvious contrarian dimension to the ethos of silent retreats – this is my take – in that they seem so serious from the outside, but once you get into it, you notice the essential feeling is erotic, as least on an interpersonal level. See, when you commit to staying silent all day – as you sit together, as you pass each other in the hall, as you hold doors open for each other – you are hearing the body, and you are listening to your own. The body is the star of the show at a silent retreat, as least among those new to it, meeting as strangers, and when bodies are principally speaking to bodies, if you aren’t actively forcing each other to grow crops or dig minerals out of the ground – if what you are all doing is sitting on big pillows and comfy chairs – then eroticism is in the air. Pleasure is adjacent to inner peace.
The petal in the rose oil is that some of us are living through two-fold consciousness and thus, in various stages of suffering and duress, and so the eroticism must be steered toward empathy and not, for instance, condemnation, which is like what bad bosses get off on. The silent retreat is very anti-bad boss, punctuated by the sort of crises that distinguish mature human concerns from all the rest, and many people in the room are grieving. A father dies. A mother dies. Some part of our lives comes apart – you open the door to see, and the room once there is missing – open air, blue sky, some scrap of a curtain where a window used to be. When the time comes to dedicate the retreat to others outside of the circle, a third of the room says Gaza. Faith and the encampment protestors, I add. Anti-bad boss – may a benevolent spirit make the world right.
Over lunch, I sit in the grass, eat seasoned tofu and pasta, then lay back and let the sunshine throw cosmic fragments through my body, which distinguishes between the impermeable and the permeable by heating up my skin. The rest, which is most of it, goes right through me and then right through the planet, on its way to the end of the universe probably. What I remember, though, is the heat – my body listening to the sun like its singing high notes, especially across my clavicle and along the bridge of my nose. A clavier is the keyboard of a musical instrument, and adversaries swap prisoners every time I sneeze. Does that make sense? The sun is investing my body with a belief in levitation, like its growing the way a dandelion does, and soon I’ll float away. Maybe gravity is going to seed – carried inside lighter-than-air clouds of indeterminacy.
The clouds – my gosh, the clouds – cumulonimbus sweethearts with passion blooming in their breasts. When someone says clouds look like curds of cauliflower, they mean that the same sort of influence that makes cauliflower look that way is likewise producing these formations on the cloud deck. Or maybe they look like mashed potatoes, scoops of lemon sorbet, but none of this really captures the manifestation of such things in the sky. When the edges of the clouds catch the sun, I have to squint to look at them, and the potential for transmogrification seems present – like the clouds become beach sand, the sky the absence of our discontent. The clouds become flashbulbs, and fame-seekers down below keep waiting for it to rain. The clouds are utterly still, like a personal insight that causes the body to stop, the mind to freeze – hours that way. Years.
Later, sitting on a set of steps miles away from the silent retreat, I see the clouds from a different angle, as different seeds float past. Someday the former will pour forth upon the land, and then the latter will pour forth into the air – one tiny seed producing a plant that grows taller than me, like tossing a brick down a well and watching a whole city erupt from it. Above and behind me, beneath the eaves of the auditorium, the sudden and familiar sound of baby birds cheeping for a meal, and I picture a parent pouring everything their child will ever need into their wide open beaks, one after another. The cheeping is continuous, like a rolling metal wheel, so my attention turns to a photographer snapping pics of a recent graduate in white heels, tasteful skirt and red lipstick. A clicking sound comes from a shutter opening and closing, camera set on burst mode.
