Can you let go of verbal abuse?

2024.05.18 22:59 justswayin Can you let go of verbal abuse?

My boyfriend (28) and me (28 F) we were having a discussion and the topic was about compatibility and I casually said that we have some compatibility issues. My bf got really upset with my comment, I realise I might have hurt him (he was going through career crisis and was not having his best days) but that was honestly not my intention, also the issues that were in my mind were quite silly (things usually people feel when you share same space by another person like I like things clean and tidy, he is slightly messy etc etc). So as I mentioned my bf got upset with my comment, things escalated... I managed to get him in okay mood for sometime but then I myself felt too worked up on how something that can be solved within 15 minutes took hours... We were also having other issues at the time so everything was going one after another inside my brains. My bf saw that I was upset (this was just after he got upset and I apologized and we were okay, but then I was feeling bad about the whole ordeal), he asked me what happened and I said these things make me not want to think of marriage. By listening to my statement my bf got really angry and abused me (used words - motherf****, go fu* urself) and kept on saying things like how I wasted his time. The moment I heard the words I felt so blank and all I could hear was my heart breaking into pieces...He did apologize later about it though he said he was simply upset with what I had said and abuses are just his way of dealing with things (he uses cuss words a lot, but never to me before... Also good to note, I don't use cuss words ever).
Now I know people use these kind of words almost everyday angry or not but would you use this for your significant other? Is this considered normal during a fight? I feel a lot of resentment inside me due to this situation but I am not sure if I am overreacting.

2024.05.18 22:55 mstarrbrannigan The Justice System is a Bastard

I'm pissed off at the so called justice system and need to rant and I figure plenty of other pod listeners have experienced what a bastard it is and might relate. Feel free to share your story in the comments and we can all commiserate and bitch together.
I work the front desk of a motel and I love it. The owner pays a living wage, and I'm not required to smile in the face of Karen nonsense.
For the most part, the property is safe and quiet, but we have been having issues with this one particular loiterer for a few years now. In general, we really don't want people who are not guests or here with guests to be hanging around the property. He did more than just hang around though. He actively bothered guests, trying to bum money, cigarettes, alcohol and rides off of people while stinking drunk. He'd bother anyone but women were his favorite. He'd hit on them and try to get their numbers, even staff members. It didn't matter how many times he was told to leave, he'd keep coming back. Usually this happened at night, but he'd show up stumbling drunk during the day as well.
He's not homeless. When we figured out his name, we were able to determine he lives in an apartment complex a stone's throw away. We learned his name after an employee saw his mugshot, and that he'd been charged with trespassing and indecent exposure at a nearby business. Looking up his past criminal history, he's no stranger to run ins with the police. Criminal Mischief, False Imprisonment Of Child Under 13 Yoa, Child Abuse, Battery, Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, Disorderly Conduct, Trespass In Occupied Structure, Possession Of Cocaine all from one encounter with police. Others include another count of indecent exposure, assault on a female and breaking and entering.
When we learned all this, we realized he was more than just a nuisance and we needed to try harder to get him to stay the hell away before he hurt one of our guests or a member of staff. Then he ended up being gone for awhile anyway. Jail? Another state? We don't know and I'm not that good at reading court records.
But he came back with a vengeance toward the end of 2022 and started zeroing in on our night auditor who was a very pretty but naïve girl which I guess he took as an invitation. When we learned about this she was told to just call the police whenever he'd show up so we could finally get him trespassed. I'm sure it will come as no surprise to any of you that the police never showed up in time to get him on the property, so they kept saying they couldn't do anything about it. Months later the planets aligned and he was finally trespassed.
This kept him away briefly. The night auditor left and a new one was hired who was not aware of the loiterer. Unfortunately for her, he took an even bigger shine to her, escalating to very sexual comments. We hadn't seen him for a bit, so we foolishly thought having him trespassed would work and hadn't warned her about him. One day last summer she is telling me about a guy who keeps coming around on her shift, and she doesn't think he's a guest. As she's describing him I realize she's talking about the loiterer. I tell her next time he comes around, just call the police.
To make a long story short (too late), by November he'd been arrested on our property three times for trespassing. And one time for communicating threats when he came screaming at the night auditor demanding to know why the general manager was at the hotel in the middle of the night. Clearly having him trespassed was not a deterrent. We kept being told to just keep calling because it would build a stalking case against him. Private security options around here are a joke, so instead the night auditor's boyfriend was given a free room during her shifts because her stalker would stay away when her boyfriend was around. But he would watch the property from somewhere because if her boyfriend went to run an errand or was away from the desk long enough, guess who would come creeping?
Don't worry, we finally got stalking charges against him though. Early November I was working a 16 hour shift because I'm a workaholic and I like OT. I was also pet sitting for my parents so as my day drew to a close I was absolutely running on fumes. Guess who turns up on the property bothering our guests again? We do the same song and dance where I call the police and they don't show up on time. The night auditor he likes was working that night and she arrived without her boyfriend, long story but he couldn't be there.
I desperately needed to get out of there because I had to be back in 8 hours and also needed to take care of the dog, but I could not in good conscience leave her by herself when I knew her stalker was prowling around. Sure enough, as I'm about to leave we see him on the security cameras heading toward the desk. The lobby has big glass windows and he walked by them, presumably looking to see if she was alone, but he kept going because I was here.
Something in me snapped. If the law wasn't enough to deter him from coming around, we'd have to find alternative methods to discourage him. I grabbed the pepper spray we have because of him and went outside to confront him like a lunatic. I shouted "hey!" to get him to turn around and I pepper sprayed him in the face as he was eating a cheeseburger and then I did it again. I got his face and his cheeseburger and he was so drunk he kept eating it as he cursed me and called me a crazy bitch, which is a fair thing to call the crazy bitch who just pepper sprayed you even though you deserved it.
I had dialed 911 on the way out the door, so they got to hear me yelling at him and told me to stop following him and I lied and said I wasn't following him, I was just yelling at him. In reality I was doing both though I only followed him to the edge of the property. The reality of the situation hit me at that point because I absolutely just attacked him and called the police on myself. My biggest concern in the moment though was the fact that my parents were out of town and there was no one else to take care of their dog.
Anyway, cop shows up like ten minutes later to take our statements and whatever. My eyes are stinging because I'd walked through a cloud of pepper spray, so I recommend gel not spray because it apparently doesn't do that. Fortunately I did not get in trouble and the cop was like huh, if your reaction to seeing him is to just immediately pepper spray him, perhaps we have enough for stalking charges. Yay, finally. They didn't catch him that night though.
And it turns out pepper spray wasn't that good of a deterrent. He was back bothering people two days later. Fortunately his favorite target was off for a few days and the other NA was working and called the police. They showed up and talked to him AND DIDN'T ARREST HIM. They said they couldn't because he wasn't on property when they arrived, which is bullshit because all they need is proof he was here which we have because we have security cameras and he has been busted another time that way. They just didn't want to do their job.
I started bringing my gun to work at that point in case the stalker decided he wanted revenge for the pepper spray. But honestly his brain is so liquor cooked I'm not even sure he remembers I did that.
Over the next couple days we say him a few more times, learned he had a warrant out for his arrest on the stalking and trespassing charge, but the cops kept not showing up in time. Then we didn't see him for a few weeks. I'd check on the local arrest records to see if he'd been arrested, and he finally was about 6 weeks after the incident. He was bonded out a couple days later and bond conditions included staying away from the hotel as well as my coworker and I.
After that he stayed off the property, but would sometimes shout at the NA from the sidewalk out front, telling her he loved her and would never hurt her. He never stuck around long enough that she felt it was worth calling the police over.
He would still hang around the fast food restaurant parking lot next door and bother guests whose rooms faced that direction. There wasn't anything we could do about it and they weren't interested in doing anything about it. This changed at the end of March when he was arrested there for being drunk and disorderly. He bonded out on that charge as well. We didn't see him around after that but knew better than to celebrate.
End of April, he gets arrested again this time at the gas station across the road. Drunk and disorderly, indecent exposure, and resisting an officer. Bonds out again.
Just a couple days later, the other day shift person spots him hanging around the property though he didn't stay long. She warned night shift about him when she left that night. Sure enough, he turns up again IN THE FUCKING LOBBY. NA scares him off with the stun stick that was also purchased because of him and calls the police. As is tradition, they don't arrive in time. But we have proof of him violating bond, so we're hopeful that maybe he'll get locked up and give us a longer break.
But he wasn't done with his chaos for the night, the NA learned the next morning when the police came back to talk to her. He went to hang around the gas station where he'd just been arrested. He was loitering around with another guy, generally being suspicious and touching themselves. Then comes the escalation no one saw coming (/s). He and his creep buddy attempt to sexually assault a woman at the gas station. Fortunately they fail, unfortunately buddy gets away, fortunately stalker does not.
But you wouldn't know about any of that looking at his charges. All you would see is that he was trespassing at the gas station, had an open container of alcohol, damaged a police car, resisted an officer, did a disorderly conduct, and he pissed on an officer. Nothing about the sexual assault, or trespassing at the hotel and violating bond. Also apparently pissing on a cop is a felony.
On the bright side, his bail was set to $25k and I kept checking to see if he had posted bond and he hadn't. So we were enjoying a reprieve. I checked every couple of days for updates on that, and when doing so today I noticed the status of the stalking case had changed from pending to disposed.
I looked into that and discovered the stalking charge had been dismissed because the victims and officer had not shown up to court. Showing up to court is kind of difficult to do WHEN NO ONE TELLS YOU YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THERE. There was absolutely no communication with any of us regarding the stalking charge. Everything I did know I knew from arrest and court records which I barely know how to decipher.
We've done everything we were supposed to do, but fuck us I guess right? We're having to take our safety into our own hands because the justice system doesn't give a fuck. He's not getting whatever help he needs to not be a predator because it doesn't give a fuck.
I'm so fucking angry right now. We're going to call the DA on Monday, for all the good that is likely to do. Maybe the owner can band together with other business owners in the area and get something done about him since money talks. I don't fucking know.
I'm not scared of him for myself, I'm scared of what he might do to a guest or one of my coworkers. He wouldn't be the first pervert to attack a housekeeper, thinking they're an easy target. One guy flashed his dick at a housekeeper a couple years ago and the owner chased him down and held him at knife point until the cops showed up. At least that cop had the good nature to claim not to have heard the owner when he said he was going to cut the guy's dick off.
The cop the stalker pissed on probably deserved it.
How has the justice system fucked you over?

"You'll OFTEN hear people say?!" about HER? The gall. No way anyone said that to her. She amplified every tiny thing she did before she met Harry, every single stupid thing was on social media, that stupid "refugee camps and red carpets" statement, etc. If anyone had EVER said to her that she was helping women find their voices, she would have said it when it happened, tagged that person, or made a general comment on her stupid Tig account. Especially if people "often" said that to her...she is making it seem as if she was a known humanitarian figure people talked about. Idiot, the only thing people "often" talked about with you was confusion about how you snagged the idiot prince who was way above your level (despite being no catch either).
No one ever said it, but she wanted acknowledgement for something she thought would put her above Kate, so she made that whole thing up and derailed the whole discussion from mental health, focusing more on men, as William was talking about, to women's empowerment...not even women's mental health!
I was so uncomfortable watching this the first time around. Catherine was speaking so softly and was being talked over by Meghan, who was speaking about women's empowerment when the entire forum was supposed to me about men's mental health. She was heavily pregnant with Louis and I felt very badly for her, she seemed like a sweet person who wasn't able to say or do much due to Meghan taking over, and I really thought that in the coming years her and William would be totally overshadowed by M and H.
That interviewer asking Meghan if she could share examples about her work with the BRF, and Meghan saying, "No, sadly, I can't." SO stupid and SO fake. It was obvious she was doing nothing, and then the interviewer still let her instead redirect to her fake women's empowerment thing. I'm so glad I was wrong about the future, and that William and Kate saw "the long game" much better than I did lol.

2024.05.18 22:34 ReNayNay89 Creepy Encounter with Family Doctor

So one day, I had a 'creepy encounter' with my family doctor...
I am a 35 year old woman now, but this encounter happened when I was around 14 or 15 years old (so about 20 years ago now) but the memory is as fresh and as vivid as though it happened yesterday. I haven't even thought of this story in many years until I came across this Reddit channel, and after reading some of the other stories, my own personal memory of this story came flooding back! So anyway...
Everyone in my family (and some still do) used to see this one family doctor for many many years for all our medical needs. We'll call him 'Doctor D.' We'd been seeing this doctor for soo long, he was even there at the delivery of my birth, where he held me in his arms when I was just a new born baby. From then on, I would see him for everything. Every time I got sick, for all my immunization's, etc, etc. So it was only natural that I would go see him the day I needed to get my first Pap smear ever done. I had just started becoming sexually active for the first time with my very first boyfriend at this stage, and I had learnt in school sex ed, as well as from other various sources that once a female starts becoming sexually active, they need to also start getting Pap Smear tests done.
(For those who may not know, a Pap SmeaPap test is a test or procedure done by your doctor to check for Cervical Cancer in women. The test is not painful in any way, but can feel a little bit strange, uncomfortable and invasive as it requires a swab being inserted 'inside' to collect the sample. Other than that, it is a very quick procedure that altogether takes no longer then a minute or two from start to finish. This last point is important to take note of for later in the story).
So its important to note here, that even before arriving to my appointment, I was already in a state of feeling a little bit freaked out and uncomfortable with the whole situation because at 14, I was a lot like most other young girls my age where I felt very awkward about my growing body, had poor self-image, would often where baggy clothes to hide any signs of my 'womanhood' from the outside world (such as the breasts that were forming!)
So the idea that I had to do a test that required I strip from the waist down, sit on a bench with my legs WIDE open, ONLY to have some random grown up come right up in there and fiddle around down there...sounded to me like the LAST THING IN THE WORLD I wanted to do and was feeling already very embarrassed about it! And even though I was told by many different people that if I wanted (and if it made me more comfortable) I could request for a female doctor to do the test but for some reason, I had turned that option down. (Something I would regret later!)
I guess i just thought in my head...it's okay, I'll just see Dr. D like I always do, I mean, he is my doctor, I've known him for years so it's only natural I continue to see him and treat this appointment like any other appointment. And I guess I just managed to convince myself to stop being soo silly, everything was fine, and besides, he is a professional doctor who will approach this situation with professionalism, and will conduct himself in a way that will not make me feel any more awkward than I already do. How wrong I was...
So Dr. D tells me to take off everything from the waist down, to lie on the bed, put the white sheet over my lap and wait for him while he gets everything together. I do this, feeling a bit red in this face, but I do as he asks, hurriedly, as I am impatient to get this over and done with quickly. When he does come around the curtain, he sits down on a low stool right between my legs, whips off the sheet and looks up at me with a big smile on his face. He then proceeds to have a conversation with me about...I don't remember what about. However what I do remember was that it wasn't at all relevant to the situation at hand or anything to do with the test or any medical information in relation to me what soever. I just remember that he had chosen that moment to talk about other trivial things like,
'So how's the family going?' or
'What year level are you doing at school now?' and things of that nature.
Honestly, I wouldn't have been listening to anything he was saying at the time as all I would of been thinking about is me screaming at him to hurry up and get on with it! And that I do NOT feel like having a chit chat with him while my private bits are in his face! But if I had thought for a second that this ill-timed catch up session would be the most uncomfortable thing to happen in that moment I would be wrong.
As he is chit chatting away to me as well as going back and forth between making eye contact with me and flashing me a wide smile to looking down at my private areas with a deep, penetrating gaze, he all of a sudden wraps his hand right around my inner thigh, closest to where my knee is. He does so just gently, almost like he's just resting his hand there for a second, but it makes me do a little jump. He doesn't seem to notice though and continues talking, and as he's talking I realize that he's slowly started to circle his thumb on my inner thigh in a slow gentle caress.
Immediately alarm bells start ringing in my head. I'm thinking to myself...
'What is he doing?'
The action was almost like he was trying to soothe or relax me in some way, sort of like how a mother might use her hand to do small circular motion's on her crying child's back in an attempt to soothe.
'But why is he doing this?'
Was I maybe being outwardly obvious about how uncomfortable I was with the situation, despite my best efforts to not let it show? And even if it was obvious to Dr. D...is it normal for a Doctor to do this soothing action on a patient? And on top of this...how much longer is this whole damn thing going to take anyway?! I thought this was meant to be really quick!
That's when deep down I started to realize that something was very wrong with the situation. Or that I started to sense his intention's weren't good or appropriate at all. Because he started to move his hand slowly up my inner thigh, towards my private area, still caressing me with his thumb, and still gazing directly at me as he went. It's when his hand reached its destination, (and NOT because he was about to do the swab at that stage, but to continue just to caress me) that my legs started to shake uncontrollably. Not for any other reason than the fact that i was scared, and I just couldn't stop myself from shaking in fear. Then 2 seconds later, the tears started to slowly form and roll down my face as I let out a little whimpering sound.
Of course Dr. D immediately noticed this but doesn't at all stop or spring back like you would hope he would do in that situation as though he might be realizing what he's doing is wrong and decides to stop what he's doing...NO. He just continues to do it more intensely and says to me,
'Honey, your shaking! What's wrong? Why are you feeling soo nervous? Don't be nervous honey, just try and relax, everything's fine...' And just continues to caress.
It's almost like he believes his words and action's are actually helping me to relax when quite clearly, its doing the complete opposite!
But for some reason, I don't say a word! I don't tell him to stop or back off, I don't move a muscle (other than the uncontrollable shake that I can't help). What's even more baffling about my behavior and reaction at this point is...I even quickly try to wipe away and hide my tears from him so he doesn't see it! Because for some reason, in that moment, I feel bad for HIM, because I'm worried my tears and distress might be making HIS job harder in some way by me being a challenging or uncooperative patient!
I can't explain why I thought or reacted this way other than the fact that I was just a young 14 year old girl who was freaking out and just didn't know what to do in a unsettling situation and especially because it was happening with someone I knew my entire life, and had looked up to and trusted for a long long time.
Anyway, it relieves me to say that he eventually did perform the test, and that this story doesn't end with any further graphic details of some sort of sexual assault or anything of that nature. He did however act completely oblivious to my distress throughout the whole thing, acted the whole way through like he wasn't doing anything wrong and that everything was normal. Oh, and remember how earlier I mentioned this test should only take usually 1-2 minutes at most to complete? I was on that table for 15MINUTES with him...which might not be a long amount of time...but to me, it felt like years in that moment!
Do you know what the worst part is? The moment i got home to my parents, I burst into tears, flung myself into their arms and proceeded to tell them the entire story. As freaked out as I was, within seconds I started to feel better, just knowing that I was back within the safety net of their presence but also knowing that once I finished telling them what happened, that my parents would know what to do to fix the situation as well as offer me much needed comfort...But you know what? That's not what I got.
What I got was being immediately thrusted out of their embrace and then straight away got the biggest telling off session of my life! They didn't believe a word I said! In fact, they got soo angry at me, for being a trouble maker and making up stories about their trusted family doctor who they have known for years and knew for a fact wouldn't ever do anything of what I was accusing him of! Then, they told me to stop crying and immediately grounded me!
I was in complete and utter shock and to this day I'm still not sure which one is worse...my doctor doing what he did, or my own family's reaction to the situation...both experiences ended up hurting me deeply. So nothing ever came of the situation. I had to bottle it up inside and bury it all away, and he got away with it. The only thing I had in my power to do was make the decision to NEVER see him again which I haven't to this day. There had been plenty of times where I had thought about reporting him to police, especially fearing for the wellbeing of any other women out there in his care...but after how my parents reacted, I convinced myself that the police probably wouldn't believe me either...if it came to me against him...i believed I would lose so stayed silent.
I just truly hope that nothing awful has ever happened at his own hands after my experience. And to Dr. D? May we never meet again.

2024.05.18 22:29 trefolialate Five arguments for Christian theism, plus a critique of the "New Atheism"

New atheist tomes tend to lack intellectual muscles. They tend to focus in on societal problems with religion, but, as Russell pointed out in his "Why I am not a Christian" one may justifiably doubt that societal effects have an impact on a hypothesises truth. For example, Darwinism gave rise to unpleasant movements, like Sanger's eugenics movement in the US or campaigns to sterlise those with physical impairments, but that's no reason to ignore the evidence in evolution's favour, and reject evolution tout court.
Further, the New Atheist books show a heavy leaning to logical positivism, rejecting anything that is not capable in principle of being demonstrated empirically. So they reject out of hand claims about the historicity of Jesus, or the predictions of the Old Testament.
The collapse of positivism has inspired a renaissance in Christian apologetics. Here are five arguments for Christian belief.
  1. God is the best explanation of why the universe exists
Many atheists have asserted that "the universe is just there, and that's all" in the words of Bertrand Russell. But can this really be the case? Mathematicians have long recognised the self-evident physical absurdities involved in trying to apply infinities in the real world. What is infinity minus infinity? Well, in maths, such equations produce contradictory answers and are therefore left undefined: they cannot produce consistent results. But could such a convention ever hold sway in the real world?
Moreover, good physical evidence points to a beginning of the cosmos. The standard model implies the universe gradually getting smaller, until there is zero distance between everything. Theoretically prior to that, nothing exists, as shown on a standard graph such as on this website: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bang.
Now, this puts an atheist in an awkward position. For, if he is a naturalist, he must believe the universe "came from nothing... and by nothing" to quote p.121 of "The Cambridge companion to atheism". But, in everyday reasoning, everything is assumed to have a cause. To quote Kai Nelson, on p.66 of his "Logic and Action" "suppose you were to hear a small bang, and you were to ask... what caused that explosion, and I said 'nothing, it just happened... you would not accept that explanation, indeed, you would find my answer quite incomprehensible." But, what goes for a little bang must go for the Big one too. Thus, we arrive at a cause of the universe. To summarise:
  1. whatever begins to exist has a cause
  2. the universe began to exist
  3. therefore, the universe has a cause
This supernatural cause must be beginningless, and therefore by the light of the first premise uncaused. It must be (sans the universe) unchanging, enormously powerful, and personal, as only a personal mind could fit such a description. And thus one arrives not at any super anodyne cause of the universe, but to its personal Creator.
  1. God makes sense of the fine-tuning of the universe for life
Numerous physicists, eg., Villenkin with the weak atomic force, estimated as fine-tuned in the order of at least 1/100,000 to the power ten, and the cosmological constant, estimated by Penrose as fine-tuned somewhere in the order of one in ten to the negative one hundredth power to the negative twentieth power, have shown certain parameters in the observed universe which allow for life to exist. Even their ratios are fine-tuned, so improbability is multiplied out until the mind is left reeling. What explains these parameters? Given the myriad problems with entropy that trouble multiverse models, as well as the specific complexity of the parameters, and the fact no law fine-tunes these constants and quantities, design seems a superior hypothesis for the remarkable fine-tuning. To summarise:
  1. the fine-tuning of the universe is due to either law, chance, or design
  2. it is not due to law, nor to chance
  3. therefore, the fine-tuning is due to design
  4. God is the best explanation of our moral experience
If God does not exist, objective morality does not exist. By objective, one means that such moral values are real and binding independently of anyone's opinion. Many atheist philosophers, from Nietzsche to Russell, agree that in the absence of a God, morals would not be binding in this way. So, an action like child abuse might be described as unpopular, or disadvantageous, but cannot be described as wrong. However, clearly we know certain things are wrong, even if we lack belief in God. Thus, if morality cannot be objective without God, and morality is objective, it follows logically and necessarily that therefore, God exists. To sum up:
  1. If God does not exist, then no objective moral values and duties exist
  2. some objective moral values and duties do exist
  3. therefore, God exists
  4. God is the best explanation for the applicability of mathematics to the physical world
If maths is a purely formal activity, why does it apply to the world? The unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics that concerned Eugene Wigner is puzzling. How can a mathematician pore over numbers that years later lead to the discovery of the Higg's boson?
Naturalism cannot provide a satisfactory answer here, whereas theists can say "God made the Universe according to the plan he had in mind". Thus theism has better explanatory value here than atheism.
  1. God provides the best explanation of the historical data concerning Jesus of Nazareth
According to Gerd Lüdemann's 1991 study of NT scholarship, three facts exist about Jesus:
  1. the empty tomb
  2. his post-mortem appearances to both friend and sceptic and enemy alike
  3. the decision of his apostles to do something fundamentally unjewish and believe in a risen messiah.
I can think of no better explanation of these facts than the one the original disciples gave: that Jesus rose from the dead in a miracle. But, if Jesus did rise from the dead, then that is a miracle that supports his claims (see the earliest traditions of the Gospels). Thus one may argue
  1. there are three facts about Jesus: his empty tomb, his post-mortem appearances, and the conversion of the apostles, that require an explanation
  2. the explanation that is most propitious is that the God revealed by Jesus raised Jesus from the dead
  3. the statement "the God revealed by Jesus raised Jesus from the dead" entails that God exists
  4. therefore, God exists

Let me paint a picture for you case you want more information, It was a regular E710 extraction mission, and it was going smoothly too, decent amount of samples, all side objectives visited and completed and we even found a good amount of super credits, we got all the way to extraction, fought off another horde of bugs and three of us got in the pelican, and that's when it happened. That traitor...he shot us, all of us, before I could even realize what was happening. And then got in without even grabbing the samples, in a last ditch effort to make sure his actions were punished, I kicked him, making sure he would come out of this with nothing. A fate I see fit only for the worst of our brothers and sisters, those that stray away from the magnificence of super earth, these traitors. If you spot this person in a mission with you, keep a careful eye on them, kick if necessary. I do not know how often they do this type of thing, but it was a complete shock to me considering the recent stuff that's happened with Sony. Absolutely disgusting. My only regret is that I panicked, caught off guard by their actions to the point I was having issue believing what I was seeing. If only I had kicked them sooner. Be careful out there divers, I hope my warning can help at least one person out there.
(This is not a call for a witch-hunt, I just want my brothers and sisters to stay safe from yet another traitor. If this is not in compliance with the guidelines, I understand. I was not sure which tag to use, my apologies.)

2024.05.18 21:52 alexkon3 2024 Dungeons & Dragons first look and interview & The Art Of The New Dungeons & Dragons by Game informer

Tho I saw the link posted here because of the Aasimar reveal I thought we might discuss the two articles from game informer about "one DnD":
https://gameinformer.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=821673
tldr of the article posted by u/Juls7243 over at /onednd
TLDR (pages 11-17)
Intro:
  • DnD developers are preparing a revision that is "fully compatible" with 5e.
Changing Times:
  • Tumultous period - licensing issues, challenges to get enough print copies, departure of division president Cynthia William.
  • These were juxtaposed against the success of Baldur's Gate 3, success of the 2023 movie release, and an evergrowing landscape of podcasts
  • New books are "far more than a window dressing" and do represent the team addressing all the lessons they've learned and heard from fan's over the last 10 years
New Approaches
  • First time that the lead designers of the new edition, were the lead designers of the previous one.
    • This enables the designers to flesh things out in a way that has never been done before
    • Designers know the detailed nuances of what they did/why a decade ago; they know what to preserve and what to change
  • Value Proposition: Better Organized, New Content, reworks of classes/backgrounds, addition of bastions, weapon masteries, and more
A Picture's Worth
  • A new intent to "help players contextualize and understand the content they're reading..."
  • The PHB includes 12 pictures (1 of each class) and 48 pictures of each subclass hoping to inspire players to pick one that inspires them
For the Players
  • Unlike previous edition that jumped right into character creation, the opening chapter is about playing the game and is filled with footnotes
  • The new version contains a RULES GLOSSARY (YES!!)
  • Bulk of book focuses on character creation
    • 75 feats (including origin creation ones)
    • 16 backgrounds (Hermit, Merchant, Noble... etc)
    • Species now replaces Race - (design team had to explain many time that race was not referring to human races, thus changed term for clarity). Aasimar, Goliath, and Orcs are present.
  • Equipment now contains weapons with weapon mastieries (Vex, Nick, etc).
  • Expanded tool list, and more details on crafting things like potions and scrolls
  • Spell list comes from 2014 PHB AND spells from other books.
    • Tasha's Bubbling Caldron will be in the PHB
  • Book is not written around the pretense of being in the Forgotten Realms, and is more realm agnostic and embraces Planescape, Spelljammer, Greyhawk etc.
Behind The Screen
  • Goal for DMG - make it an "indispensable resource in and out of play". The new DMG will "show not tell"
    • Will contain half page first draft adventure design for DMs to springboard off of
  • Book is a "tool box for ideas" and not only has magic items in it, but sample maps, and guidelines on encounter design
  • Bastion System will be an optional set of rules in the DMG - it has the goal of "give the players something at home they care about"
  • Full LORE GLOSSARY explaining key players across DnDs history
  • Details the world of Greyhawk (OG gameworld by Garry Gygax) as a template world for DMs to utilize
Monstrous Option
  • Biggest ever - 500 monsters - 75 brand new ones
  • Every single stat block has been changed
  • Monsters have the same CR as 5e - for backwards compatibility
  • Monster have "expanded families" to help the building out of ecosystems
  • Added a high CR vampire called "the Nightbringer" so that vampires can be used in higher level campaigns allowing for "clearer narratives"
  • Addition of "epic titan level" monsters that are on-par with the tarrasque
    • New monster: "Blob of annihilation" - a gelatinous cube that can eat an entire town (SO cool)
  • Large addition of NPCs of given themes - Bandits, Pirates, Mage etc that can be dropped in with no prep-work and a large spread of power levels.
The Monster Manual looks especially juicy. 500 Monsters compared to the 300 in 5th edition is amazing. The new ones look fun especially the giant Gelatinous cube. Wonder what all the 75 are going to be. I guess they will throw a lot of the monsters from previous publications in there like for example the gem dragons?
The other Article posted by Game Informer was about the Art of "One DnD"
https://www.gameinformer.com/2024/05/14/the-art-of-the-new-dungeons-dragons
Somethin thats also very exciting to me personally is again the talk about the new Monster Manual.
The 10 original Chromatic and Metallic Dragons were redesigned to better portray their biome and character. The designs for the Red and imo especially the Bronze Dragon look phenomenal in my opinion.
The art in the new core books has a chief goal of helping to further an understanding of the game. Spells are often shown being cast. Art for character backgrounds shows a possible place your hero could have come from. It even extends to the visuals of creatures in the Monster Manual. “There's a lot of mindfulness about the mixture; to pick the monster design accurately to the stat block,” says art director Emi Tanji. “If it's a creature that does slashing damage or something like you want to make sure we see claws. And you want to make sure if the art has shows something that's like a stinger, but there's nothing in the stat block – that would be weird, right?”
I wonder if that means that they made new art for all 500 monsters.
What are your thoughts. I actually think most of this stuff sounds quite exciting for a change tbh.

2024.05.18 21:42 Federal-Recording515 Debt Collector responded with someone else's paperwork

Hello!
So I had a debt from capital one gmc card on my credit report, this is a debt I dont remember (altho it's not impossible it was me from long ago). So I used a form I found on here to dispute it and mailed that in. Today I got their response (within the 30 days) but only one paper (the first one) has my name on it! All of the statements are from someone in Texas. I've never been to Texas and don't know who this person is. My name is nowhere on the paperwork they sent besides that first page which said they got my dispute and I have 30 days to respond. How should I respond to this?
Also, the amounts don't add up. Tex's account got charged off at 610 and the balance due by me (per the first page) is 333. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
EDIT: I should add that the debt is no longer with capital one, its with dbtsolutions. This is who im corresponding with

AITA for asking my sister to pay for rent even though she is moving out?
Hello fellow petty potatoes and our beloved Queen Charlotte!
I need some much needed perspective and advice on this issue. For context I (f26) live with my fiancé (m23), my cousin (f26), and my sister (f22). We've lived together for 2 years in an apartment. About 2-3 weeks ago I got a call from the leasing office along the lines of my sister thinking/wanting to move out. Our lease doesn't end until 3-4 months from now. They didn't mention a date so I figured she was gonna move out at the end of the lease.
Last week my sister tells me she's moving out at the beginning of the upcoming month which at the time was in 14 days. I told my fiancé and my cousin, we all agreed that two weeks is not enough time to save up to cover her portion of the rent. We also agreed to not sign the roommate removal form that was emailed to us which would release my sister from being obliged to pay for rent. We can cover the last few months left on the lease but due to the short notice for this upcoming month she needs to pay her portion.
The day after us three agreed I mentioned to her in person that we won't be able to cover her portion. She said she needs the money to pay for her new apartment that she's moving into with our other younger sister. I let her know that there was not enough time to get the money. She said that she would see what she could do.
A day or two afterwards I got the statement for the month and sent out a group text to let everyone know their portions. The conversation goes as followed in the screenshots between my sister, fiancé, and I. I covered the names for privacy but highlighted what my sister said in yellow. My fiancé is highlighted in blue. This conversation took place while I was at work so I couldn't respond back right away.
I will admit that the conversation goes down hill very quickly. I do not take disrespect and insults lightly. Years of emotional and mental abuse from my neglectful alcoholic of a father and narcissist mother have caused a lot of damage. Also my sister and fiancé's relationship is not the best due to them getting into a fight about 9 months ago, but they stay civil to keep the peace. That's a story for another time by the way.
I will stake claim for my fiance and I being a-holes for how we handled the conversation and the things we said. But as for simply doing business for rent I'm not sure. So reddit aita for asking my sister to pay rent even though she is moving out?

2024.05.18 21:27 Bbobsillypants Nature of Big Donuts 6 - a Stargate x NOP crossover fic - Fear

[FIRST][LAST]
Atlantis Commission
Officer Report - Lieutenant Colonel John Shepard
CLEARANCE LEVEL 5
Well this had definitely been a very interesting couple of hours. This dimension and its people had very odd opinions and ideas. Apparently the prey species of this dimension were all obligate cowards, whose instincts compelled them to be non-violent and run from threats. At least according to themselves. There were apparently some of them who were “predator diseased” as they called it, a disease which often resulted in increased violence, aggression, lack of empathy, and unheard like behavior. It sounded to me like some form of infectious psychopathy, but the venlil assured us it shouldn't affect us since we were predators, which didn’t really ease my fears, but hopefully it was something we could figure out when we got home if it ever became a problem.
Gotta love mandatory quarantine periods woo hoo!
As scary as this odd disease sounded, my main concern at the moment was to try and turn a professed coward into someone who could at the very least defend themselves.
I looked down to the table of gear ahead of me and then over to the mostly naked Venlil to my side, and then even farther to Tiel’c who thought It would be a good idea to help oversee Farva’s rapid fire training course. I fiddled with the bluetooth earpiece which was rigged up to one of our handhelds to run a translation program to speak directly with the captain. A big step up from our unknowingly one sided communications earlier.
I stepped on the other side of the plastic table and placed my hands down upon it and looked on at my new student..
“Welcome Captain Farva to our very impromptu accelerated course on Human arms armor and basic infantry tactics.” I said gesturing to the hodge podge gear we had managed to assemble for the good captain. “Are we ready to begin?”.
She flicked her ears, somewhat nervously by the looks.
“I’d take it that's a yes then?”
“Oh yes sorry”
“Alright then, well given that most of our crew is human and the only other alien struts around naked all the time, the only gear we have on hand is for humans, So you're going to be running size smalls and it's all going to fit all a bit big” I say as I toss her the tactical vest. ”Here try this on, we can try to tighten it up if it's a bit loose anywhere”. The captain wrestles with the buckles a bit, and Teal'c helps her tighten up some of the top straps, as the Venil’s shoulders weren't as broad as humans. Farva gave Teal’c an odd look, but seemed appreciative none the less.Once finished, she grasped the vest in her paws with interest. “This armor seems quite lightweight, which is nice, weight is often an issue that causes us to forgo armor, since heavy armor would hurt our running ability.” Farva remarks. “Also the sheer amount of pockets seems quite excessive, what do you need all these for?”
“Well for starters it's currently missing these '' I hand Farva one of the armor plates which she looks over. “That is a depleted Naquadria ceramic composite plate. It’s designed to stop bullet impacts and dissipate energy weapon blasts. It slots into that chest compartment in the front and back of your armor.”
“This isn't quite what Id imagine for the armor of your kind”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Well judging by your ships I would have imagined you would put more emphasis on defense Your predatory nature would make you less likely to run away from conflict allowing for more encompassing armor to cover more than just your chest, since you have less need to run.”
She would put it like that.
“Well there are a number of reasons for that, a lot to do with those excess pockets you mentioned. For starters you will not be carrying the same amount of gear that the standard infantry unit would normally be carrying, we are preparing you for a quick in and out op. Normally us expedition teams need to be deployed into unknown territory for extended periods of time, we need to carry everything we might need with us from food, bullets, weapons, to comms gear, sensors, repelling equipment etc. The weight from all that gear adds up fast; In order to stay sufficiently mobile and combat effective; we only carry enough armor to protect our vitals, head and torso, anything else can hopefully be patched up by a field medic.”
Tielc gave his piece as well. “It is important to know when to run both towards and aways from one's foes, not every battle can be won through strength alone, but by strategy and cunning. Being able to reposition oneself quickly is therefore highly advantageous”
Farva seemed to freeze at Teal'c's statement, not out of fear I think, she instead had a distant look in her eye. To snap her out of her slump I handed her a standard ballistic helmet.
Seeming to get the idea she looked at it oddly and tried it on. It confirmed to her head shape decently well but depressed her ears to either side of her head, kind of resembling what one might imagine a sad bunny rabbit to look like “I don't think this will be something I can bring with me” she said ” I can't use ear signals and this will muffle my hearing.”
“Why don’t you keep it on for the time being, I think any extra hearing protection might be useful considering what we are about to try next.” I hand Farva some ballistic ear protectors, slightly modified and somewhat ramshackle. “One of the corporals worked closely with Nurse Fila to get an idea for safe decibels levels for your kind, we were also able to get these earbuds molded to fit into your ear canal better”
Farva took them and slipped them in. “These are a bit uncomfortable, what do I need these for?”
“You'll need them for this” I say as I unsnap the clasps on the weapons case revealing its contents.
The content seems to capture Farva’s interest, getting a slight tail wave.
“Okay So this here is a p90, It carries a 50 round top loading magazine of teflon coated armor piercing ordnance. With a cyclical rate of fire of 900 rounds per minute.”
Farvas ears perk up at this. “This seems like an efficient design, I take it these are a flashlight and laser sight for accuracy?” She asked, pointing to the top of the weapon.
“Yes we also have holographic and acog optics which will help line up targets from farther away.” I look on as Farva picks up the weapon and inspects it, testing the weight as I note that it will weigh a fair bit more once loaded. But she doesn't seem to be struggling with the weight. I can't help but notice good firearm safety as well, she keeps her finger well off the trigger and takes care to keep her weapon pointed aways from anyone else.
“This seems like a solid design but I'm not sure how useful those weapon optics would be, as they are not designed for my side facing eyes”
“I'm sure our master at arms can figure something out, why don't we give it a test fire first tho, before we send it off to make adjustments.” I instruct her on how to load the weapon and turn the safety off. I warn her of the sound it makes. And while definitely taken aback by the recoil and sound at first, she quickly gets the hang of it, she has some respectable shot groupings in both single fire and in short bursts. And keeps the rounds reasonably centered while firing in full auto.
She did a whole lot better than I would have initially suspected given her performance in the hanger bay a day before.
“The rate of fire seems useful” Farva spoke “This would be useful for our soldiers, our accuracy falters when we are panicked, and the increased shot count should guarantee some hits based on volume of fire alone” she finished with a dejected expression.
She quickly places the weapon back in its case, as if it burned to touch.” I don't know if I should be armed for this mission, at least not with that weapon, I don't want to miss and hit one of you in the back!”
“What? Nonsense, you are a great shot, and this is just a precaution in case we get separated or flanked and need some covering fire. If our guys are doing their job right you shouldn't need to fire a single round anyways.”
Captain Farva’s breathing started to hasten, earlier I might have thought it was fear, but I was starting to get an idea of what the captain's issues were. I’ve seen this before.
“I.. I can’t be trusted with this responsibility, every time I am left in charge of something, every time people put their lives in my paws I ....”
“Farva, don’t you start with me now you hear.” I said sternly, swiftly capping off her inevitable spiral of self doubt.
“But.. no.. you don’t understand”
Stopping her again I spoke. “But nothing, what happened before on that ship, and back at that colony is in the past. I don’t know your whole situation, but from what I have gathered from the crew It was nothing good. You feel responsible and it's eating away at you, and frankly it doesn’t matter if that's true or not. Accidents happen, people make mistakes, and when that happens we need to learn, take those lessons to heart, and don't let it stop us from helping people in the present. If you let guilt, or fear of mistakes stop you, then bad guys have already won, all without having to have fired a shot”
Farva is quiet for a short time, I was hoping I got through to her, I'm not the best and pep talks and this certainly wasn’t your typical weapons demo, if only everyones could go as smoothly as Ronan’s.
Farva spoke quietly, arms pressed up against her chest, she looked so sad, defeated, and small. Well more than usual anyways. “We can't be strong like you humans, we are too emotional and when we are scared we run away or we lock up and...”
“And that is clearly not the case with you captain Farva” Teal’c finally reentered the conversation having heard enough. “You have shown courage with every action you have taken so far, your actions have saved the lives of many of your crew, every time you have been threatened you acted not just to protect yourself but others as well. You attempted to contend with beings many times your size without even thinking about it, all in the effort to protect others, and this is only in the time we have known you, this speaks nothing of your actions over the colony. You are a warrior of admirable courage Captain Farva, your self doubt is unearned.”
A single tear rolled down Farva’s eyes which she quickly wiped away. “That was very nice of you to say, but I'm not brave like you say, I was terrified out of my mind the whole time.”
Teal’c looked puzzled. “I did not call you brave, I said you were courageous.”
Farva shot back with the little venlil one up one down ear flick I had very quickly learned was confusion.” I'm confused you just said brave twice”
“Hmm it appears your language does not contain the word I am using, I apologize I am not used to speaking through a translator” Teal’c relented “ There are two words I am using admittedly in slightly different forms, bravery and courage. Bravery or to be brave is to lack fear, to not be afraid to begin with. Courage tho, Is a trait far more admirable. Courage is to be afraid, to have fear, to worry about one's own mortality and personal safety. It is to acknowledge risk, danger, to feel fear, but to act in spite of it.”
“Had I not met your kind before I would have thought predators don't feel fear.”
“Everyone fears feel Farva, It is how we overcome it that determines our worth as warriors”
Teal’c picks up the p90 and returns it to Farvas hands.
“Your people need a warrior Farva, a warrior who protects the innocent and guides the lost to safety. You have shown how collected you can be in the heat of battle, You have already proven your worth in our eyes Farva, now you must do the same in your own. The greatest enemy lies not without” Teal’c places his hand firmly on the venlil’s chest “But within”.
After Action Report - Venlil Colonial Defense Force
Subject : Chief Engineer Donu
I fiddled with my holopad, Its small surface area proving to be a consistent source of annoyance in my current endeavor. Gone was the large workspace afforded to me by my holotable back in my office. Instead I had to work with the scaled down portable holotablet I was just fortunate enough to have strapped to my person when I was beamed away from our last ship. I was stuck with its smaller keyboard and slower rendering speeds.
An annoyed smooth skin alien looked over my shoulder at my device, attached to it was a jury rigged fiber optic cable, slotted into a terran silicon to crystal patch cable, which would convert the electrical signals broadcasted by my tablet into a bandwidth that the terrans crystalline based computers; which they used for highly complex tasks like hyperdrive and transporter systems; could use, and then It was patched again in a even stranger connector to patch into the odd asgard computer stones.
All in all it looked like someone tried to plug a regular computer into some crystal construct like you would find in a fantasy holonovel, and again plugged that into a harchen heat rock sauna lounge. Finally branching out from this conglomeration was a simple copper based wire that connects to a computer terminal at which currently sat the late Doctor Rodney Mckay. A title upon initially hearing led me to believe he was a medical doctor, which led to a flurry of medical questions that he had absolutely no means of answering.
While this odd alien nomenclature was interesting, what intrigued me more was his actual area of expertise, theoretical astrophysics, as well as a number of other diverse specialties and fields. Not to mention not only was he a great scientist who had he been raised in the more civilized portion of this galaxy, would have knowledge and aptitude that would put him alongside some of Aafas greatest minds, but he was also an engineer without peer, at least in this galaxy. His interactions with general Samantha Carter hinted at her possibly being his match if not more. For a species that was supposed to glorify violence the decision to have a scientist be arguably the most senior member of what was by their admission a military vessel spoke to their commitment to knowledge and understanding, a very noble prey-like goal.
I looked warily at the lines of code at my screen, the asguard translation program had earlier scanned our ship and was able to parse written languages, but complex files, like images and 3d design schematics were harder to encode and decode from our perspective systems. As is stands we have 3 completely separate computer architectures, the asguard can talk to human computers and the venlil computers can talk to the asguard computers, It sounds like we would have everything we need to get a human C.A.D schematic into a venlil holotablet right? Wrong! And you're stupid for entertaining such a idiotic notion! Parsing text from raw binary is relatively straight forward, you're just looking for patterns, repeating bit combinations that might infer letters and then iterating them over millions of times looking for patterns, letters, words, and then with a bit of help from some undecoded analog audio transmission, spoken language. This is a far cry from actual procedural communication protocols, the ones that allow for file transfers, exactly what we needed if we were to get Rodney's redesigned part schematics into a format and medium that can be plugged into a suitable fabricator. Assuming one still exists, which I can reasonably assume it does.
Speaking of which, I have just made something of a breakthrough. For upon my screen appears a simple geometric hydrogen cube, we’re talking vertices, planes, material data, everything we need for a usable design file.
I let out an excited pent up yip, the culmination of hours of frustrating software integration work. Unfortunately I startled Rodney, who lets out a panicked gasp and clutches his chest pelts with one of his paws.
“Oh god…..” He gasps, pointing at me “Please.. don’t do that”
“Sorry!” I say a bit meekly. I slowly approach him so as to not make him unnecessarily uncomfortable and show him my work.
“I got the file exchange set up, all we need from you is to finish any modifications to your part, upload them to my holopad, and then we can print away at any class 3 or above fabricator we can scrounge up on Brayga colony.”
“Ok.. um.. got it, I'm almost done i’m just you know” He points a lone grasping appendage at his screen,”Running some simulations, making sure everything is up to spec.” keeping his response kurt. “Sorry for freaking out there.”
I nod my head in the human display of affirmation and return to my workstation to further bug check my work, to test potentially problematic edge cases for when he finishes. Tho Rodney's continued odd behavior intruded on my thoughts.
I should have felt empowered, being able to intimidate this ‘massive beast’, but I didn't. I didn't like being feared, his people have been nice to me, Rodney himself courteous to a fault and desperate for positive attention.
I thought I could expect predators to be fearless but that clearly wasn't the case, rodney was fearful, nervous, had I not known better I would say defective, and while it annoyed his crew, they didn't berate him for it, or attempt to assert dominance, they encouraged it even with placating words and tried to help him through it, they encouraged and supported him like a proper herd, even if sometimes it took the form of what the human would call a playful ribbing. I supposed I could help him as well.
I approached him again, careful to make my approach known to him, making sure to approach from within his limited field of vision. He looks up at me with a wide eyed glare, had I not known him I might have assumed it was hunger, but I did and knew it to be concern.
“Uh high Donu.. um whats up?”
“Why are you afraid of us rodney?”
“Wa-What, me afraid?” he gives out a panicked laugh ”uh no no, I'm not afraid, you know just a bit weirded out I'm just getting used to you all, it's not a fear thing it's a a…. Just getting used to new aliens thing, ask Hermirod we went through this whole song and dance right buddy”
Hermirod furrowed his brow and gave an irritated sigh from across the room.
I reached out to take Rodney by the paw.
His whole body flinched at my mere touch, I quickly withdrew my paw.
“Oh.. um.. I didn't…”
“Rodney! It's okay, your crew doesn’t seem to care when you show fear, and neither do I. Why are you afraid of us? You are almost twice our size and surely double our strength, most venlil would scream and run in terror at the mere sight of you. What's wrong?”
Rodney let out a sigh. “Oh its, we don't have to talk about this, I can deal with this, I deal with scary situations all the time, it's fine, I'll be fine.”
“Rodney, my people are a very emotional, empathic people, we are open with our feelings and with our fear, and the fear of the one can affect the herd, please let me help you. I don’t know what to expect from your society but I promise I wont judge you for your fear or emotions, I mean look at many of my crew mates, we are no one to judge”
Rodney shot back “You didn't seem to be so bothered”
“I’m too old to care, I was about to retire, hell I was about to die as far as I knew, Brayga colony was supposed to be a quiet place to lay back, work on some hobbies, plant a garden and pester the young men of my colony until I either dropped dead of boredom or got lucky” I joked.
That seemed to raise Rodney's mood somewhat. He sighed and seemingly relented.
“It’s… a dumb story, I don't even know why it affected me so much, I come from a place on earth called Canada, people don't usually believe me when I say I am from there, us Canadians are notoriously friendly and I guess I haven’t exactly filled that mold for a lot of my life, but hey I'm working on it, people like me, I have lots of friends back at Atlantis” He says the last sentence in a way as if it isn't me he's trying to convince.
“I'm sure you do, Rodney, You seem like quite the charming individual when you're not cowering!”
“Ha ha thanks, maybe you could come and visit sometime. Tell that to doctor Becket, really nice guy, smart man, he would love to meet you, he loves investigating new species. But back on topic, oh boy, so me and my sister Jeannie were on a family trip to rural Vancouver to visit my grandpa's farm, he kept a lot of goats, not for eating or anything, they were essentially pets that he would use for milk”
“Wait hold on? You drink milk from other animals! Do your females not produce enough milk for their young?”
“Oh um no, we just sort of drink it or ferment it into cheese!”
“Ferment? You mean spoil?
“Yeh”
I reeled from this plasma blast of a statement, I like any right minded venlil had a number of nightmares about being an arxur’s cattle before, especially when I first learned about those things in primary school, but never once had it crossed my mind that we could be used for something so weird. What the speh was I supposed to do with that information?
“Maybe you should get back on topic”
“Yeh sorry about that uh.. Anyways the momma goat had just had a litter of babies, and their real cute when their little, so late in the day when my grandpa was asleep we snuck out to the pens so we can play with the little baby goats, our grandpa told us not to but you now how kids are.”
At this I think back to a young Nyan, as I teach him the inner working of the hyperdrive, I tell him he’s not cleared yet to operate in this engine compartment alone, but I could tell from the occasional caught black hairs and dropped writing implements, there had been a number of curious unauthorized expeditions into its inner workings, he didn't really listen either.
“My sister as always was trying to be the voice of reason, wanting to take it slow. If I was paying attention I might have noticed the angry moma goat who didn’t appreciate the strange human messing with her children.”
The color seemed to drain from his face.
“I uh…” He began to stutter again ”I screamed, a lot, it was rather undignified, she ran right at me, thank god it wasn't a male goat, one with horns, I tired to run but I was hit in the back and knocked over and kicked real good in the head, like wake up in the vet clinic a quarter mile down the road kind of bad”
“This goat was a prey animal?”
“That would be what your kind focuses on”
“Oh sorry”
“Anyways It seems dumb but I have just never been good with animals since then, especially ones that look like you; no offense; I'm getting better but when I first saw you guys in the hangar bay, I was just that dumb kid again, getting in way over my head, scared for my life. I guess there is something to be said about childhood trauma. I really should be over this, I'm getting better with it I swear it’s just”
I take his paw again, he doesn't flinch this time.
“I'm a venlil, a prey animal, I know fear, I know what it is to live in fear, It rattles your brain, it turns your paws to wet grains. It takes great strength to overcome it, to push it aside just long enough to protect the herd. Your herd relies on you Rodney and you are doing a great job in spite of your fear, in spite of having to work with those you fear. You have achieved intellectual feats that rival the greatest minds of the federation and all that while struggling with a traumatic experience. Fear isn’t dumb and there is nothing wrong with you for feeling it.”
“Thank you” Rodney says “That means a lot, I won't be like forever I promise, I just need some time.”
“We will laugh about this someday,” I assured. “Nothing as big and intelligent as you should be afraid of anything”
“Are you calling me fat?” Rodney exclaimed with fake offense.
We both chuckled.
My kind words had resulted in a more upright posture, and a more cheerful demeanor from the human, almost like when I congratulated Nyan on his work, and it got me a look at that happy snarl of his, that I was starting to grow quite fond of.
After Action Report - Venlil Colonial Defense Force
Subject : Apprentice Engineer Nyan
Oh wow! I get to write a report for this mission! I never get to write reports, Donu says they're too boring, but there’s so many interesting things going on all the time. Sometimes I sneakily write my own! Just for fun of course, nobody sees them, which is probably for the best as I sometimes get excited and embellish them slightly. One of the reports I wrote was about the time Donu used nothing but a wad of electrical tape, a bottle of high grain venlil alcohol and a pocket knife to repair a venlil medical ship just in time to get out of the way of a big scary space predator, with glowing red eyes and a million tentacles!
Anyways Im not sure If im suppose to write these In present tense first person or past tense. I asked the captain and she said it's whatever so long as I make sure any pertinent dialogues are properly quoted(“”).
“Nobody usually reads these things anyways.” She said, but this one is surely going to be so exciting, who could look away!
I mean who's gonna scoff at a chance to read about friendly predators from another dimension! A dimension of friendly predators who give warm head scratches and hand out yummy strayu not strayu treats called donuts, that are somehow fluffier than strayu, and have a nice moisture to them. I asked for the recipe but Samantha said we wouldn't have the ingredients back on Venili prime to make them, and Teal'c said the recipe is an old family secret. Its weird predators would be so protective of their plant snacks.
There are so many weird things about these predators, they have nurturing instincts that make them find us cute. They stay perfectly balanced even if they don’t have tails, swinging their arms and body all over the place to keep upright like a lopsided gyroscope, it's pretty funny looking!
They also wear artificial pelts all the time, which I thought was weird, I thought maybe the ships temperature was set by the angry gray alien since he’s the only crew member beside the venlil who walks around naked all the time, maybe he had a fit when it was to warm, and the humans obliged him cause they were worried they would make him even angrier, and wore clothes to make up for the cold. I thought this made sense, a lot of their technology does seem to come from the Asguard, maybe he has more say in the goings on of the ship because of that. But apparently humans just like wearing pelts all the time. They feel uncomfortable without them and don’t like it if you try to remove them or look up their upper artificial pelts they call shirts.
The humans are so weird, I don’t even have to embellish my reports to make it more interesting. Like that time with the big tentacled space predator. That may sound real compared to this stuff but it Isn't, Ha! I bet you fell for it at first, hook line and sinker! Like the humans would say. I think I used that saying right, I'm not sure what it means, but Shepard brought it up when he was telling a story about the wraith.
The humans are so nice, instead of exterminating their predators they try to cure them! Their doctors are working to modify the wraith so they don't have to eat humans anymore, so they can be friendly predators too.
Anyways I should probably get to the actual report part of this report. Farva says I should start after I went off with Samantha to work on some special astrophysics equations she said I would be good at. I kind of wanted to go with Donu to help Rodney get the new parts they needed, or Farva to help rescue our people, but the humans and even the angry gray alien got really weird when Farva mentioned taking me on the mission. Samantha seemed to want me to help her really badly so I didn’t mind. Samantha says I have the most important part to our mission. She's teaching me about how humans communicate through subspace, and about stellar drift equations. We are working on what she calls the exit strategy.

2024.05.18 21:24 Awkward-Ad1037 Simplifying Dynamics 365 CRM Reporting: A Look at Custom Quote Generation

Hi everyone,
I'm excited to share a glimpse into a recent project where I developed custom reports for Dynamics 365 CRM. Today, I'll be focusing on our Quote Generation Report, which exemplifies the power and versatility of our reporting solution.
Overview:
Our goal was to streamline the process of generating quotes within Dynamics 365 CRM. The Quote Generation Report automates this process, pulling data from our products table and dynamically generating detailed quotes for our clients.
Key Features:
  1. Dynamic Product Integration: Each product in the quote is associated with a technical document, providing comprehensive information to the sales team and clients.
  2. Customization Options: We've built in several customization options to tailor each quote to the specific needs of our clients, offering a personalized experience:
    • Language Selection: Users can choose their preferred language for the report generation, ensuring that the content is presented in the language they prefer.
    • Template Selection: Users can select a template from the available quote templates based on the previously selected language. The data is automatically adapted to the selected template and language, enhancing the flexibility and customization of each quote.
    • Dynamic and Static Data:
      • Dynamic Data: Data is read from the CRM, ensuring real-time accuracy and relevance.
      • Static Data: For example, a product may have a technical document available in different languages. Based on the chosen language for the report, the appropriate technical document is merged with the main template, ensuring that all information is presented consistently and comprehensively.
    • Direct Download: After the report generation finishes, users can directly download the report. Each report is saved as a note in a custom entity for easy access and reference. Additionally, reports can be uploaded to SharePoint for collaborative sharing and storage purposes.
These features not only streamline the quote generation process but also empower users with the ability to create tailored, professional reports that meet their specific requirements.
Visual Showcase:
I've prepared a video walkthrough of the Quote Generation Report, giving you a firsthand look at its functionality and user interface. You can watch it here.
Additionally, I've uploaded the same sample quote document generated in the video (the data has been replaced with dummy data) using our solution. You can view and download it here.
I'm eager to hear your thoughts and answer any questions you may have about our custom reporting solution

2024.05.18 21:21 Artelia_Jewellery THE GROWING APPEAL OF LAB-GROWN DIAMOND RINGS

By Artelia Jewellery

AFFORDABILITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE ON DESIGN

In the pursuit of love and commitment, an engagement ring symbolises a promise, a future, and an unbreakable bond. With the evolution of traditions and the rise of conscious consumerism, lab-grown diamond rings have emerged as a beacon of modern love, combining affordability, ethics, and beauty. As a Melbourne engagement ring jeweller specialising in custom engagement rings, I've witnessed firsthand the growing interest in labgrown diamonds. This comprehensive guide explores why lab-grown diamond engagement rings are an excellent choice for budget-conscious couples who don't want to compromise on quality, style, or ethical considerations.

ETHICAL BRILLIANCE: THE RISE OF LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, created in a controlled environment as opposed to being mined from the Earth. Without the restraits of supply like natural diamonds, the price difference is extensive. The technology of growing lab grown diamonds offers a more sustainable and affordable alternative to traditional diamond mining. For couples in Australia looking to buy engagement rings online or instore, opting for a lab-grown diamond engagement ring is a great option when budget conscious and not wanting to compromise on size or quality and design.

AFFORDABILITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE

One of the most compelling reasons to consider a lab-grown diamond engagement ring is affordability. These diamonds typically cost 30-50% less than their mined counterparts, making diamond rings for women more accessible. Budget-conscious couples can invest in custom engagement rings with larger, higher-quality diamonds without stretching their finances. Whether you're in Melbourne or anywhere else in the World, the option to buy engagement rings online with lab-grown diamonds opens up a world of possibilities to customise your dream ring within your budget. Keeping in mind however due to the speed of manufacturing lab grown diamonds, they do not hold the value as do natural diamonds, but some amy argue that this is irrelevant as you do not intend to resell such a sentimental piece that is your engagement ring.

IDENTICAL BEAUTY AND DURABILITY

Lab-grown diamonds possess the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined diamonds. This means they offer the same brilliance, sparkle, and durability that diamonds are celebrated for no matter the cut, whether emerald cut, round brilliant or radiant cut. When considering diamond ring styles or engagement ring trends, lab-grown diamonds provide the flexibility to explore various engagement ring styles without sacrificing quality. For those pondering, "Are lab-grown diamonds good for engagement rings?" the answer is a resounding yes. They allow you to embrace diamond ring styles that are both timeless and entrend.

A WIDE ARRAY OF CHOICES

The technology behind lab-grown diamonds has advanced significantly, offering a wide variety of cuts, colours, and clarities. This variety ensures that finding a lab-grown diamond engagement ring that matches your personal style and preference is easier than ever. From classic solitaires to more modern designs, the latest engagement ring styles and trends are all available with labgrown diamonds. Artelia Jewellery specialises in custom engagement rings and can craft a piece that's uniquely yours, aligning with your vision and pricepoint.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

For many couples, the ethical and environmental implications of their engagement ring choice are paramount. Lab-grown diamonds offer a guilt-free alternative, requiring less land disturbance and using fewer resources than traditional mining. This makes them an appealing choice for eco-conscious individuals looking to make a positive impact with their purchase. By choosing a labgrown diamond engagement ring, couples in Australia and beyond can take a stand for the planet without compromising on the beauty or quality of their symbol of love. As a natural alternative we at Artelia Jewellery only offer ethically sourced diamonds like GIA certified diamonds, ensuring they are sourced from confirmed origins and via sustainable means.

CONVENIENCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

The digital era has transformed how we shop for engagement rings. Couples can now buy engagement rings online, including custom engagement rings featuring lab-grown diamonds. This convenience allows for a broader exploration of diamond ring styles and engagement ring trends without the need to visit multiple stores. For those searching for a "lab-grown diamond engagement ring near me," the online marketplace offers a plethora of options, from Artelia Jewellery in the heart of Melbourne, to international clients, from a click of a button.

EMBRACING THE FUTURE WITH LAB-GROWN DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RINGS

As engagement ring styles evolve and consumer preferences shift towards more affordable and sustainable choices, lab-grown diamond engagement rings stand out as a symbol of modern love. They offer an affordable, beautiful, and responsible option for couples making one of the most significant purchases of their lives. By opting for a lab-grown diamond, you're not compromising on quality or design, especially if you commission a renowned and specialist Melbourne jeweller like Artelia Jewellery.
Artelia Jewellery, specialising in custom engagement rings, are at the forefront of this change, offering couples the opportunity to design their dream ring with lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds along with coloured gemstones. Whether you're drawn to the timeless elegance of classic diamond ring styles or the bold statements of the latest engagement ring trends, lab-grown diamonds offer the versatility to bring your vision to life.
In conclusion, lab-grown diamond engagement rings represent a convergence of ethics, beauty, and value. For budget-conscious couples in Australia and around the world, they offer a way to celebrate your commitment without compromising on your design or your dreams. As we look to the future, the choice of a lab-grown diamond engagement ring is not just a reflection of personal style but a broader movement towards sustainability and ethical responsibility in the world of fine jewellery.

2024.05.18 21:17 EricLannonDrama Apparently This Guy is Famous Up and Down the East Coast For Scamming and Swindling People

Nate 2/7/2014 3:40 PM RVA – It’s not often a story weaves around the country like an insidious spider following Widespread Panic from outdoor arena to 400 seat club. But when it happens, it’s almost too much to believe. Let’s preface this story by saying, as far as actual accusations, we only have one official source saying the hippy-frat bro in question, Eric Lannon, has done anything wrong (or even really exists). But on closer inspection (and after a number of Google searches) it’s easy to see a pattern emerge–including pink Vineyard Vines plastic sunglasses, flip-flops in November, and Romney events–which tracks Lannon’s 1% style jack-assery up and down the east coast. Lannon came to light via a University of Richmond Police statement warning students about him loitering on campus and taking advantage of any rube he could get close to. Lannon, police warn, has a “history of theft and swindling. He manipulates his victims into providing shelter, food, money, and transportation under false pretenses.”
I have gotten a few emails over the last two days about this guy. Apparently a TON of people know about him or have been used by him. So I finally read the article about him and he’s kind of a genius. I highly suggest you read it, because it’s pretty interesting. What we do know is this guy is just a swindler to the highest degree. But I don’t think it’s even illegal, is it? People are voluntarily giving him all the shit he needs to survive.
Link – A man identified on Wednesday as Eric Lannon is said to have a history of theft and swindling, according to campus police. He has reportedly slept in at least four University of Richmond student apartments or houses and has received money, food, alcohol and clothing from numerous students. “He seemed like a nice guy,” said one of the junior Richmond College students whose house Lannon stayed at Tuesday. Lannon is believed to be from Richmond, according to various sources. He has been spotted on Richmond’s campus several times during the past three weeks, students report. All students quoted have asked to remain anonymous in the interest of safety. A campus crime alert released Wednesday afternoon cautioned community members not to interact with this person, and to contact URPD immediately if he is seen on campus. Lannon was not in police custody as of Wednesday night. Lannon is known to manipulate his victims into providing shelter, food, money and transportation under false pretenses, according to the police report. At least 25 Richmond students have confirmed that they have interacted with him in the past three weeks.
Obviously this Lannon dude is a huge douche. Like Grade A, 100% piece of shit of a human. I knew a girl in college who did the EXACT same thing. To hide her privacy, lets call her “Celeste”. She would bounce frat house to frat house, person to person, using and sweet talking people to allow her to live there and eat their food and use their shit. When people would cut her off, she’d treat them like total shit and move on to someone else. Easily my least favorite person I’ve ever come in contact with. But to people like her and Lannon, it’s all in the game.
Editors Note: I really wanted to use that sentence so I could include the video.
But yea, apparently he’s just a complete asshole so that’s your little Friday afternoon PSA since a bunch of people end up getting their shit stolen by him.
EDIT: Stoolie Hatcher just sent me a link to another Lannon story. Good lord this guy is the worst. Link.

2024.05.18 21:16 Federal-Recording515 Debt Collector responded with someone else's paperwork

2024.05.18 21:14 raininqoceans The world we live in is nothing but an experiment on a massive scale

I’m posting here to see if anyone else aligns with this belief. My partner is extremely convinced that the Earth is fake, but not exactly in a computer simulation way. It seems that everything we know about the Earth has been told to us. I don’t exactly know how to put all of this into words, so bear with me. We know the government lies, the 1% pretty much controls everything and that we can’t believe everything the media tells us. I do believe many of the things we know to be facts could potentially be be lies. She feels as though we’re in some sort of realm. Everything in this realm has been given to us. If there are others, everything could be different. She doesn’t believe that everything on Earth is fake, but believes that all things that exist here have been created by some higher force outside of this realm. She believes we are being observed and that this is almost like a giant experiment. We are real beings who reproduce. How we operate, think (psychology) and interact is real. We aren’t being controlled and we have free will. They watch our collective behaviors, what we do within this realm that humans were placed in long ago, and how we advance as a species. She believes that whoever is observing / controlling things manipulates the world we live in to further the experiment. She genuinely thinks all life on Earth has also been placed here. She feels as though we are trapped in this realm that is the Earth. The part I struggle with is where she isn’t convinced that space exists. We don’t really have definitive proof of anything to a degree and that everything could very easily be a lie,. All the evidence we have has been given to us and if it’s true, it’s only true in this realm. She thinks the sky is simulated, HAARP is actively causing natural disasters and affecting human behavior and that so many things just don’t make sense in a real way. We have scientific “evidence” to back up a lot of our ideas and things we understand to be true, but what if this isn’t 100% accurate? Everything we know to be true is an observation that has been confirmed to the point where things can be considered factual. There is never a way to be 100% certain that scientific facts are completely and undeniably true. She gives very specific examples and I wish I memorized all of them so I could convey exactly what she means. She can be extremely convincing when sharing her theories with the people she speaks to. She make a lot of relevant points I’m not her, so it’s hard to fully explain this correctly. I feel as though some of the things she says contradict each other. When people try to dispute her claims with scientific facts it obviously doesn’t sway her because she feels as though we’ve all as a society been brainwashed into believing the people in positions of power who confirm and supply us with all of the information we know. I can’t say I fully believe everything she says to be true, but she makes some good points. The belief that we are trapped here and that none of what we do really matters because it’s a giant experiment takes a toll on her. She feels like there’s so few who think like her that she’s alone. People thinking she’s crazy just makes her feel even more alone because she’s convinced that nearly everyone subconsciously has this sheep mentality. There’s been so many cases of people who have had seemingly outrageous theories and being ridiculed, dismissed and labeled as insane, but they turned out to be correct about things and now their beliefs are understood to be facts. Consistently, people in power have silenced those who spoke the truth to avoid information they don’t want out from being exposed. So she feels as though people are ignoring signs and are too afraid to question reality because it would be too hard to come to terms with. It would be a scary, sad realization that leaves you feeling hopeless. I’m not looking for proof that her theory is incorrect. I’m wondering if there are others whose takes align with hers. Every time we talk about this over the phone her the call drops randomly. We call each other again and the same happens each time. It’s facetime and she leans her phone against something every time we talk. Her hands are in view and I would be able to see if she were touching her phone and ending the call. This doesn’t happen during any other conversations, ever. Literally every time we talk about it in person in detail she gets strange, almost cryptic phone calls. One time she was explaining her thoughts to me ( I ask about her theories often, I want to understand her mindset and make her feel heard without necessarily agreeing with her statements. I often dispute things she says and ask her to explain in more detail), anyway we were talking about something very dark regarding this topic and then I got a phone call that said “Sfop” and nothing else. Seriously freaked me out. She will start talking about how the world is a stage (which is true imo). Everything seems to be a distraction from reality. Every form of entertainment we have is a distraction. She’ll bring up inconsistencies with things that are commonly told to the us. I’m sure we could all do this, it’s pretty universally understood that lies and misinformation circulate constantly. Some of the things she says makes sense, some don’t. At least not to me. I think about the things she says a lot. She’s extremely articulate, so that alone causes people to consider the things she’s saying. I’m genuinely curious about if this is a shared belief. Are thefe communities of people who think like this? Subs even? I really want to know if this is something others ponder.

2024.05.18 21:04 Mountain-Gas-9789 Is taking emotional abuse from wife when she is depressed part of love?

Recently divorced (28m) after being married for 1.5 years with my wife, no children. I made a previous post which goes into greater detail on why our marriage fell apart. At the end of the day, I believe my ex-wife suffers from undiagnosed depression which she vehemently denied.
During the last months of our marriage, my wife and I were having arguments non-stop. I believe through my best intentions that I tried everything I could to compromise, mediate or solve the issues but nothing seemed to be making her happy. I begged my wife to go to counseling with me to fix these issues and she refused to go. Ultimately, I made the decision to file for divorce which my wife strongly contested.
During the more heated discussions, my wife made some very incendiary statements to me including but not limited: “I’ve been thinking about divorce”, “I feel like I married the wrong person”, “we shouldn’t have gotten married”, “it doesn’t affect me anymore when you cry to me”, “I don’t have a baseline of happiness anymore”, “I wonder if I would’ve been happier marrying someone who made six figures” and so many more gut-wrenching statements that left me feeling distraught and numb.
I understand that fights (even dark ones) are a part of marriage, that the first year is generally rocky for most marriages and that it is not always serene sailing. It genuinely did not feel like love to me or things that a person who truly loves their spouse would say to them. It felt like emotional abuse.
Our divorce was finalized a month ago, I know there is no going back and I ultimately believe I made the right decision in ending our marriage. However, I have to ask the people who have been married for a while now but if my ex-wife truly had depression, was this something I was just supposed to take?
Any feedback is appreciated.

2024.05.18 20:54 Keith502 Why is the Bill of Rights interpreted to give rights to Americans?

There seem to be a large number of people who believe that the purpose of the Bill of Rights was to grant and guarantee rights to the American people. Furthermore, I have heard many people claim that the Bill of Rights is entirely a list of specifically individual rights of American citizens. It puzzles me why these beliefs continue to persist, because the historical record indicates that there is no reason to believe these descriptions of the Bill of Rights. There is a more than adequate amount of historical evidence to corroborate my conclusion. The first and most direct evidence is the very preamble to the Bill of Rights itself. The original preamble of the Bill of Rights begins with a paragraph explaining the document’s purpose; it goes as follows:
The Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.
I think the three most important phrases in this paragraph are “in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers”, “declaratory and restrictive clauses”, and “extending the ground of public confidence in the Government”. These three phrases seem to best sum up what the Bill of Rights was originally meant to accomplish: it is a list of declaratory and restrictive clauses whose purpose is to prevent the misconstruction or abuse of the Constitution’s powers, and to increase public confidence in the federal government. And if one were to look at the Bill of Rights, its text would seem to be in harmony with this statement of purpose. The Bill of Rights consists mostly of negative clauses which put restrictions on the federal government; it states what shall not happen or what shall not be done by Congress, such as prohibiting freedom of religion, abridging freedom of speech, infringing the right to keep and bear arms, violating the right to be secure in property, etc. And the ninth and tenth amendments do not mention any particular rights whatsoever, and clearly just serve the purpose of preventing the Constitution from being misconstrued or abused to diminish the rights of the states and the people, and to prevent granting the federal government more power than the Constitution meant for it to have. The phrase “extending the ground of public confidence in the Government” further indicates that the Bill of Rights was not really meant to add rights not already stipulated in the Constitution, but was only meant to reinforce trust in the federal government at the time of the Founding. The Bill of Rights was not meant to add any substantive articles to the Constitution, but rather it consisted of articles whose purpose was to reinforce the articles that had already been established, and prevent them from being misinterpreted in the future by any unscrupulous members of the federal government. Also notice that there is nothing written here in the preamble about granting rights to the American people, let alone granting specifically individual rights to the American people: you would think if the framers of the Bill of Rights had meant for this to be the document’s effect, they would have stated so clearly in the preamble.
Another piece of evidence for my conclusion comes in an address given by James Madison -- the author of the Bill of Rights -- in the House of Representatives on June 8, 1789. This address involved an early proposal of amendments to the Constitution. Before listing his various propositions for amending the Constitution, Madison said this:
There have been objections of various kinds made against the Constitution. Some were levelled against its structure because the President was without a council; because the Senate, which is a legislative body, had judicial powers in trials on impeachments; and because the powers of that body were compounded in other respects, in a manner that did not correspond with a particular theory; because it grants more power than is supposed to be necessary for every good purpose, and controls the ordinary powers of the State Governments. I know some respectable characters who opposed this Government on these grounds; but I believe that the great mass of the people who opposed it, disliked it because it did not contain effectual provisions against encroachments on particular rights, and those safeguards which they have been long accustomed to have interposed between them and the magistrate who exercises the sovereign power; nor ought we to consider them safe, while a great number of our fellow-citizens think these securities necessary.
The part I've put in italics indicates that the major purpose of the amendments to the Constitution was to reassure citizens that effective protections were put in place to prevent the “magistrate who exercises the sovereign power” from encroaching upon their rights. Notice there is nothing written here about granting rights to the people, only protecting the people's pre-existing rights from the federal government.
Following the above statement, Madison begins to list a variety of proposed additions to the Constitution, and he proposes the additions be inserted into the body of the Constitution itself, at various sections. Ultimately, he begins to propose a certain list of amendments to be inserted within article 1, section 9; and this particular list happens to correspond to most of the articles which comprise the Bill of Rights as it exists today:
Fourthly. That in article 1st, section 9, between clauses 3 and 4, be inserted these clauses, to wit: The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretext, infringed.
The people shall not be deprived or abridged of their right to speak, to write, or to publish their sentiments; and the freedom of the press, as one of the great bulwarks of liberty, shall be inviolable.
The people shall not be restrained from peaceably assembling and consulting for their common good; nor from applying to the Legislature by petitions, or remonstrances, for redress of their grievances.
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country: but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms shall be compelled to render military service in person.
No soldier shall in time of peace be quartered in any house without the consent of the owner; nor at any time, but in a manner warranted by law.
No person shall be subject, except in cases of impeachment, to more than one punishment or one trial for the same offence; nor shall be compelled to be a witness against himself; nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor be obliged to relinquish his property, where it may be necessary for public use, without a just compensation.
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
The rights of the people to be secured in their persons; their houses, their papers, and their other property, from all unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated by warrants issued without probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, or not particularly describing the places to be searched, or the persons or things to be seized.
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, to be informed of the cause and nature of the accusation, to be confronted with his accusers, and the witnesses against him; to have a compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor; and to have the assistance of counsel for his defence.
The exceptions here or elsewhere in the Constitution, made in favor of particular rights, shall not be so construed as to diminish the just importance of other rights retained by the people, or as to enlarge the powers delegated by the Constitution; but either as actual limitations of such powers, or as inserted merely for greater caution.
It is notable to consider that Madison initially proposed the Bill of Rights to be integrated into the Constitution itself, rather than to be a separate document. But what is even more notable is the specific location it was proposed to be inserted in. Article 1, section 9 is specifically the location of the Constitution dedicated to enumerating the prohibitions upon the power of Congress. What this means is that the original plan for the amendments currently appearing in the Bill of Rights was for them to merely be a list of stipulations regarding what Congress was not allowed to do. Thus, it would make no sense for those same clauses today to be construed as being themselves grants of rights to individual American citizens, anymore than other articles within this same section -- such as Congress being prohibited from abolishing the slave trade before 1808, or laying taxes on state exports -- could themselves be considered grants of individual rights to American citizens.
Another piece of evidence can be found in the 1833 Supreme Court case Barron v Baltimore. This case essentially makes explicit that which was originally understood about the Bill of Rights -- that it was meant only as a list of prohibitions upon Congress. The following excerpt makes this clear:
Had the framers of these amendments intended them to be limitations on the powers of the State governments, they would have imitated the framers of the original Constitution, and have expressed that intention. Had Congress engaged in the extraordinary occupation of improving the Constitutions of the several States by affording the people additional protection from the exercise of power by their own governments in matters which concerned themselves alone, they would have declared this purpose in plain and intelligible language.
But it is universally understood, it is a part of the history of the day, that the great revolution which established the Constitution of the United States was not effected without immense opposition. Serious fears were extensively entertained that those powers which the patriot statesmen who then watched over the interests of our country deemed essential to union, and to the attainment of those invaluable objects for which union was sought, might be exercised in a manner dangerous to liberty. In almost every convention by which the Constitution was adopted, amendments to guard against the abuse of power were recommended. These amendments demanded security against the apprehended encroachments of the General Government -- not against those of the local governments. In compliance with a sentiment thus generally expressed, to quiet fears thus extensively entertained, amendments were proposed by the required majority in Congress and adopted by the States. These amendments contain no expression indicating an intention to apply them to the State governments. This court cannot so apply them.
And then the aforementioned case was subsequently referenced by the 1875 Supreme Court case US v Cruikshank, which further reinforced the same conclusion while addressing the first and second amendments of the Bill of Rights:
The first amendment to the Constitution prohibits Congress from abridging "the right of the people to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." This, like the other amendments proposed and adopted at the same time, was not intended to limit the powers of the State governments in respect to their own citizens, but to operate upon the National Government alone. [. . .] It is now too late to question the correctness of this construction. As was said by the late Chief Justice, in Twitchell v. The Commonwealth (#325), 7 Wall. 325, "the scope and application of these amendments are no longer subjects of discussion here." They left the authority of the States just where they found it, and added nothing to the already existing powers of the United States.
The particular amendment now under consideration assumes the existence of the right of the people to assemble for lawful purposes, and protects it against encroachment by Congress. The right was not created by the amendment; neither was its continuance guaranteed, except as against congressional interference. For their protection in its enjoyment, therefore, the people must look to the States. The power for that purpose was originally placed there, and it has never been surrendered to the United States.
The second and tenth counts are equally defective. The right there specified is that of "bearing arms for a lawful purpose." This is not a right granted by the Constitution. Neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence. The second amendment declares that it shall not be infringed, but this, as has been seen, means no more than that it shall not be infringed by Congress. This is one of the amendments that has no other effect than to restrict the powers of the national government, leaving the people to look for their protection against any violation by their fellow citizens of the rights it recognizes, to what is called, in The City of New York v. Miln (#139), 11 Pet. 139, the "powers which relate to merely municipal legislation, or what was, perhaps, more properly called internal police," "not surrendered or restrained" by the Constitution of the United States.
So as you can see, it was well-established from the time of the country’s founding that the Bill of Rights was never meant to itself be a grant or guarantee of rights to the American people. The official function of the Bill of Rights was always prohibitive rather than affirmative: the purpose was to restrain the federal government, rather than to endow something to American citizens. So what I don’t understand is: how has the Bill of Rights become so misunderstood and misapplied? Why is it that, from the layman even to the level of the modern-day Supreme Court, it is believed that the Bill of Rights is meant to grant or guarantee rights to individual American citizens, when this conclusion is unequivocally unsupported by the historical record? And not only is this conclusion not supported by the historical evidence, but I would argue that it contradicts the very purpose of the Bill of Rights; the whole point of the document was to limit the power of Congress, but interpreting the document to be a federal guarantee of rights to the people is, in effect, a transference of power to the federal government never stipulated in the Constitution, and is in violation of the tenth amendment.
The Bill of Rights, according to its original design, is essentially superfluous; effectively declaring nothing in itself, and only serving to clarify the intent of the Constitution, prevent it from being adversely misinterpreted, and to make explicit what was implicitly acknowledged regarding the boundaries of congressional power. There had been much debate among the Founders regarding whether the Bill of Rights should even exist at all. So how is it that a document whose original purpose was to be nothing more than a protection of civil rights has now become interpreted effectively as the source of the people's civil rights?

2024.05.18 20:52 constellation-hours [M4M] a dark academic and a herbalist flirt via snail mail

STARTER (anything here can be tweaked to suit your character!)
In the sanctuary of your office, bathed in the soft glow of morning light, a mound of correspondence patiently awaits your perusal. The sea of mundane white envelopes is nothing out of the ordinary, but an emerald letter in golden script somewhere in there catches your eye. The return address bears the seal of the Royal Apothecary, an institution unknown to you, situated in the remote town of Jabuticaba—a name you have only ever encountered on maps, and it is addressed to you directly, a professor and researcher who has been working at the University of Mykon for over twenty years. With a measured hand, you unfurl the envelope.
Sir—
I write to convey a matter of grave concern, one that has regrettably eluded your attention since the publication of your dissertation entitled “the potential of elemental alchemy in mineral extraction” back in January. I am sincerely outstanded that a shadow hasn’t been cast upon your career and standing. I am therefore led to believe the academic standards of University of Mykon have gone down in the past thirty years since I last was an overseas student. In an ideal world, I would trust that, following your resignation, the vacant post would swiftly be filled by a learned and forward-thinking scholar, one who actually champions the cause of progressive sciences, thus illuminating the path for the minds of tomorrow. Yet, I am all too aware of the political machinations that often dictate the course of academia, where adherence to antiquated principles of elemental alchemy prevails within the hallowed halls of your establishment.
The oversight in question is no trifling matter. In your report, you assert that our continent lacks the requisite climatic and soil conditions for the growth of hyperaccumulative plants such as mimilus pangiens and mormine baratensis, therefore making it impossible to perform phytomining to extract metals from the soil. You advocate instead for the practice of elemental alchemy to obtain these vital compounds, a notion that I find preposterous. I write to you now surrounded by these very plants you claim are impossible to grow without the rarest of conditions, flourishing in abundance no more than 300 leagues from where you teach. The former blooms resplendent with its crimson tears and cadmium skirt, while the latter, though in nascent stages, has expanded its network of roots significantly. You may wonder at my methods, but I assure you, the truth lies within the realm of possibility.
That during your entire research process you ended up overlooking the vast network of exceptional herbalists active and thriving in all corners of our rich civilization is tragedy. That this omission also went unnoticed amidst the rigors of peer review is comedy.
I assure you, under different circumstances, I would not concern myself with the written ramblings of amateurs, fictionists, or charlatans who roam the corridors of your institution. It is not my duty to lead the willful pighead towards enlightenment, nor do I relish the prospect of engaging in fruitless endeavors. However, fate has intervened in the form of a promising protegee of mine, who, through diligent scholarship, earned a prestigious placement at your university. Imagine my astonishment upon her return, then, bearing your treatise, which to my dismay is now part of the national syllabus.
It is not with much of a heavy heart that I contemplate the necessity of addressing the errors that have crept into your research on phytomining. Were it not for the endearing praise and admiration bestowed upon you by my impressionable yet brilliant protegee, whose judgment I trust despite the fable quality of the tales she shares of your teachings, I would be compelled to raise my quill in defiance and expose these discrepancies to the discerning eyes of the intellectual community. Let this instead be a fair warning to do your due diligence and rectify the shortcomings of your life’s works.
With concern and scruple,

If you wish, instead of an alchemist, your character can be a demonologist, an exorcist, a mage, a witch... And his field of research can be anything else you would prefer, as long as it's in the realm of fantasy and/or science fiction!
This story starts off as an exchange of letters. Other than the occasional anatomical etching, botanical watercolor or daguerreotype (not of each other, of course! That would be frivolous. Unless…), there will be no actions, no dialogue, no inner monologue, only what our characters are willing to write on the pages of their letters to each other.
