2024.05.21 12:41 thefunguy202 White precipitate in benedicts reagent

I am testing some liquids for the presence of reducing and non reducing sugars.
The liquids have been measured to have a specific gravity of 1.058 and 1.072 and 1.010 against controls
They are liquids that have been expelled from a mushroom fruiting block.
When we do a benedicts reagent to to confirm the presence of sugars, there is a slight change in colour for the 1.072 sample and a larger change in colour from the 1.058 and little to non In the 1.010.
The 1.058 and 1.072 however seem to put out a white precipitate which is unusual.
We have tried centrifuge and its the same.
It's not benedicts quantitative reagent, just a regular reagent.
What could the white precipitate be an indicator off?

2024.05.21 12:17 luxiant Can I get some help with installing tch-rs?

These are all I've done in terminal. I'm using opensuse tumbleweed in docker.
wget https://download.pytorch.org/libtorch/cpu/libtorch-shared-with-deps-2.3.0%2Bcpu.zip zip libtorch-shared-with-deps-2.3.0+cpu.zip export LIBTORCH=/home/test/libtorch export LIBTORCH_INCLUDE=${LIBTORCH}/include:${LIBTORCH}/include/torch/csrc/api/include export LIBTORCH_LIB=${LIBTORCH}/lib:$LIBTORCH_LIB export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${LIBTORCH}/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export LIBTORCH_STATIC=1 export LIBTORCH_BYPASS_VERSION_CHECK=1
Then I made a rust-bert project that requires tch-rs. I ran the summarization code from the repository readme sample codes.

Here is what I got after cargo run.

2024.05.21 12:11 freelancernewbie Content Managers here, I need your help 🙏

Hey everyone! I'm aiming to become a content manager, but I'm feeling a bit unsure about my skills. I have a background in various areas of digital marketing, but I need some advice to boost my confidence. Here's a brief overview of my experience:
Recently, I applied for a creative VA role, but the employer suggested I consider applying for a content manager position in their team. I really want to try my best to secure this role, but I need your help.
Here are my questions: - What skills do I need for this role? I've found varying requirements across different agencies. - What tools should I be familiar with that you use? - What kind of tests can I expect during the application process? -Is anyone willing to mentor me and provide guidance during the test? Can we practice together, so you can send me some sample tests and provide feedback on my output? (Willing to pay mentorship fee :))
Thanks for your help and support, everyone! I appreciate any advice you can offer to help me 🙏

2024.05.21 11:15 ghostgirl18242 Advice please?

Hi, So I'm 29w pregnant with my 2nd. I went for a growth scan at 28w and everything was great baby wise, they did urine sample and it came back with leu+. I've been worried about this but no-one actually told me this flagged up, I found out on badger notes. I don't have any symptoms of uti or anything other than needing a wee and not being able to fully go (but idk if baby is sat on my bladder).
I called midwife so should hear back in a few days but I'm not counting on it. I feel like if it was urgent then someone would have called me to get Me some antibiotics or something? Do I call the Dr's or just wait it out and see how things go?
Edit to add: I had a midwife appointment the day before the growth scan where they tested my urine and it came back clean - NAD (nothing abnormal detected)
Thanks!

2024.05.21 11:08 MiserableLog8618 Wild time in SE Asia got wilder…

I m a 30M, who one afternoon on 4/15, went to use the bathroom and saw discharge coming from the tip of my penis after squeezing it. The next morning on 4/16 I went to a reputable family clinic located in Da Nang, Vietnam and saw a doctor who said it might be gonorriha or Chlamydia. He examined my penis then gave me two 500mg tablets of AZITHROMYCIN and a needle in my ass cheek of CEFTRIAXONE.
The next morning, I woke up and my penis was swollen and the discharge was white. I went back to see him and he assured me everything looked normal. I was very impatient waiting for my STD results because I told it would take 3 days to get back, so I went to a different lab and provided a urine sample. I was hoping to get it sooner. I received both results back on 4/18 and they were negative.
The time in between getting tested and getting results back I’ve experienced discharge (dry stains in my boxers through the day), redness at the tip, it stings when I pee (sometimes worse after I pee), somewhat swollen foreskin, and a lil bit of blood when I wipe the time sometimes.
Speaking of blood, I went to go take a shit and as I began to pee I had to push really hard to urine. When I got up, I noticed a good amount of blood in toilet bowl (it felt like I pushed out a kidney stone, although I never had one before) So now I m really concerned. I didn’t test positive for anything, yet I m having these crazy symptoms. Could anyone shed some light, this subreddit has helped calm my nerves a lot from afar but was wondering if anyone had any feedback for me as I leave for the States today.

2024.05.21 10:58 Heather_Chandelure Mum found my blood test kit and I have no idea what to do.

I ordered a blood testing kit from medichecks and my mum accidentally fucking opened it and I have no idea how to explain it.
I told her I "just wanted to do one" because I couldn't think of anything to say. She needed to go to work, but wants to talk about it when she gets back. She focused a lot on how expensive it is and "who is gonna take the sample?" So maybe she's not gonna ask me about why I've got it, but that's probably just wishful thinking.
Please help, I don't know what to do.

2024.05.21 10:47 NibVulture [WTS] {Custom?} Vintage Esterbrook SJ DIY servicing kit (Or I can service it)

Hello all, today I would like to try something I haven't seen yet. Through my few months in fountainpens, I have seen a few people looking to take on trying to service/restore vintage pens themselves but didn't want to go all in for all the materials. So I thought maybe such people would be interested in a DIY kit for servicing/restoring one pen to try out first.
I decided to try this with Esterbrook SJ's as they are fairly hardy and out of the model J's, I find they have the easiest to remove grip section

Esterbrook SJ's (D for vintage)

Blue: A bit dirty, needs cleaning
Green: Very good condition, still has intact sac
Grey: Good condition
DIY kit contents:
Tiny sample container of sac shellac, a few disposable applicators, a new ink sac (silicone or latex, I'll default to silicone if you have no preference), tiny sample container with a smidge of talc, nib of choice.
Notes:
I have examined each pen and confirmed an intact and functioning J-bar. (If it had an ossified ink sac, I took it out, checked the bar, and then put it back in so you can have the full experience)
I have tested each nib for flow.
Unfortunately, the kit is CONUS only as I do not know if I can ship shellac internationally. However, if you just want the pen or if you want a serviced one, international shipping is probably $20.

Prices (cumulative)

$45 Shipped for pen & kit (+$1 for latex sac)
+$1 2ml Koh-I-Noor rapido-eze (pen cleaner solution{you probably don't need it, but if you wanted to try some})
+$3/4ml ink sample
+$5 Cleaning
+$5 Servicing
+$10 Full restoration/refurbishing (polish and all that)
{add-ons may take a few days}

Nib writing samples (The first 9668 is unavailable)

{Less functioning nibs also available for those who want a challenge}

The following are my notes, though I find it difficult to tell the difference between scratchiness and feedback when it comes to the tipless nibs.
9461: Feedbacky
2556: Very scratchy
2668: A little scratchy but also has feedback? (feels like a pencil)
9668: unavailable
9668: Exceptional flow
9668: Dry
9556: Nice flow
2550: Pencily, dry
2550: Pencily, wet
9556: A bit dry
9556: Wet
9450: Dry
1551: Pencily/wet
I also have a bunch with bent/misaligned tines, flow problems, missing/chipped tipping, or some other problem available if someone also wants to do nib repair.

LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHT

Lighting plays a crucial role in how colors appear in your kitchen. Natural light can make colors look brighter, while artificial lighting can alter the hue and intensity. Always test paint samples in your kitchen at different times of the day to see how the color behaves under various lighting conditions.

The Process of Food Testing: What Happens in a UAE Lab?
Ensuring the safety and quality of food products is of utmost importance in the UAE, where food testing labs play a critical role in safeguarding public health. These labs use a range of sophisticated techniques to analyze food samples, detecting contaminants, verifying nutritional content, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. In this article, we will explore the intricate process of food testing lab in UAE, providing a detailed overview of the various stages involved.
Food Testing Lab in the UAE

Sample Collection and Preparation

Importance of Proper Sample Collection
The first step in the food testing process is the collection of samples. This is a crucial stage, as improper sample collection can lead to contamination, compromising the accuracy of the test results. Samples are collected from various sources, including farms, production facilities, and retail outlets. Trained personnel follow strict protocols to ensure that samples are representative of the batch and free from external contaminants. Proper labeling and documentation are also essential to maintain the chain of custody and traceability.
Initial Sample Preparation
Once the samples arrive at the lab, they undergo initial preparation. This involves homogenization, where the sample is mixed thoroughly to ensure uniformity. Depending on the type of analysis required, the sample may be diluted, concentrated, or otherwise treated to make it suitable for testing. Storage conditions are carefully controlled to preserve the integrity of the sample, preventing any changes in composition before analysis.
Microbiological Testing
Pathogen Detection
Microbiological testing is a key component of food safety, focusing on the detection of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Common pathogens tested in UAE labs include Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. Using techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and culture methods, lab technicians can identify and quantify these pathogens, ensuring that contaminated products do not reach consumers.
Spoilage Organisms
In addition to pathogens, labs also test for spoilage organisms that can affect the shelf life and quality of food products. These organisms, including certain bacteria and molds, cause spoilage by breaking down food components, leading to off-flavors, odors, and textures. By identifying spoilage organisms, labs help manufacturers implement appropriate preservation methods to extend product shelf life.
Chemical Analysis
Pesticide Residue Testing
Chemical analysis is another vital aspect of food testing, with pesticide residue testing being one of the primary concerns. UAE labs use advanced techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to detect and quantify pesticide residues in food samples. These tests ensure that pesticide levels are within safe limits, protecting consumers from potential health risks associated with pesticide exposure.
Nutritional Analysis
Accurate nutritional labeling is essential for consumers to make informed choices about their diet. Food testing labs conduct nutritional analysis to determine the content of macronutrients (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) in food products. Techniques such as spectrophotometry and titration are used to quantify these components, ensuring that the nutritional information provided on labels is accurate and reliable.
Allergen Testing
Common Food Allergens
Food allergies are a significant concern for many consumers, making allergen testing a critical component of food safety. Common allergens tested in UAE labs include peanuts, gluten, dairy, and soy. Accurate detection of these allergens is essential to prevent allergic reactions and protect vulnerable individuals.
Testing Methods
UAE labs employ various techniques to detect allergens in food products. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a widely used method that utilizes antibodies to detect specific proteins associated with allergens. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is another technique used to identify allergenic DNA in food samples. These methods are highly sensitive and specific, ensuring that even trace amounts of allergens can be detected.
Authenticity Testing
Verification of Food Authenticity
Food fraud is a growing concern globally, and the UAE is no exception. Authenticity testing helps verify the true identity of food products, ensuring that they are not mislabeled or adulterated. This is particularly important for high-value products such as organic foods, premium meats, and specialty ingredients.
Techniques Used
Labs use a variety of techniques to test for food authenticity. DNA barcoding is a method that involves sequencing a specific region of the DNA to identify the species present in a sample. Isotope analysis can determine the geographic origin of a product, providing information about its production location. These techniques help prevent fraud and ensure that consumers receive genuine products.
Conclusion
The process of food testing in UAE labs is a comprehensive and meticulous endeavor, involving multiple stages and sophisticated techniques. From sample collection and preparation to microbiological and chemical analysis, allergen testing, and authenticity verification, each step plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of food products. Adhering to strict regulatory standards, UAE food testing lab provide reliable and accurate results, safeguarding public health and maintaining consumer trust.
As consumers become increasingly aware of food safety issues, the role of food testing labs becomes even more critical. By understanding the processes involved in food testing, we can appreciate the efforts made to ensure that the food we consume is safe, nutritious, and authentic. Supporting and prioritizing rigorous food testing not only protects our health but also promotes a transparent and trustworthy food industry in the UAE.

2024.05.21 08:28 Puzzleheaded_Pin7913 Digital Art Prints Gone Wrong

I have a friend who's a digital artist in the Philippines. She's in the process of making prints of her art, but the printing business just now informed her that the prints came out patchy.
Prior to all this, she requested test prints as samples to check the quality of each print and to know if she needed to make edits, and they all turned out great. However, the printing business came back to her to say that blues and purples come out patchy on old mill paper, and they mentioned none of this prior to the printing (and the initial test prints didn't have any patchy spots at all). Now they're saying that it might cost them more to reprint and my friend's worried that it might cost her extra to print better copies of her art when it wasn't her fault to begin with.
She's still waiting to hear back from the printing business, but can you guys share any advice on how not to get burned in this kind of situation?

2024.05.21 08:26 totallynot_weird Fell for pro life/ faith based clinic scam..was the ultrasound fake or am I overreacting?

Warning, very long and confusing post ahead:
On 4/20 I found out im pregnant with my second, after taking a test at home. (first is now 8, almost 9). Without all the details, I am not in the same place mentally, emotionally, etc that I was while pregnant with my first. I was younger and not in a healthy relationship, but I did have more help from friends and family, and financially I was in a better place. I was scared then too, but no where near as unprepared and scared as I was finding out this time. Of course I’d hoped I would be in a better position in life and stronger and better and all the things.. if I ever had another child, but to put it lightly, life throws curveballs, and all that… and the last two years especially, taught me that life is not a linear, continually uphill path. There will be some tumbling back down and starting over… so to speak. So without going on and on, I ended up deciding to seek help with figuring out what I wanted to do because I was very unsure.
my periods have been irregular for well over a year, I had attributed it to stress. I only took a test because I had some symptoms, I’m not on birth control, so I knew it was a possibility. (please refrain from judging/ lecturing. The how and why is very complicated, and this story is going to be long enough.. and I’m doing what I need to, to address it all) but I wasn’t doing a great job of tracking anything and I’m embarrassed to say I wasn’t and am still not exactly sure how far along I might be. I had routine care while I was pregnant with my first, but found out early, because my period was like clockwork then, so 2 days late I had tested positive. I went to one of the only places available in my area at the time, and I didn’t have a great experience, but I also didn’t really question whether I was going to go through with the pregnancy, and just went straight to prenatal care. I had blood testing done finding out I was 3-4 weeks initially, and then a normal ultrasound at 8 weeks, and regularly from then on.
So this was my first experience with abortion/ family planning clinics and my first time being unsure of when I actually got pregnant, which left me both nervous and driving myself insane with scenarios. And the other stress in my life is just amplifying it.
The day of my appointment (4/29) I was running late and so I called to let them know. I quickly googled the number of the place, when I realized I couldn’t find it in my phone, from scheduling it the week before. A woman answered, she was friendly but told me I wasn’t in their system or scheduled for that day. I quickly realized I called the wrong number, and started to apologize. The two clinics are on the same street. She was still being very nice and started telling me they could see me anyway, that day, and even started saying they could do an ultrasound if I wanted, I didn’t even need to worry about having insurance. I said no thank you. I was suspicious, but not fully aware yet of who I had even accidentally called. I told her no thank you and-hurried and called the correct office, that I had initially booked an appt with. they were overbooked that day as it was, and apologized, but they couldn’t push my appt any later and had to reschedule for a couple days later.
My anxiety, and desperation to get some answers, coupled with pressure on myself and stress, led me to call the other clinic, back.
They were happy to get me in, and I showed up. I started putting pieces together on the way over, and confirmed my suspicions when I walked in and saw the Bible verses on the walls. I started to change my mind and was preparing myself to leave but started convincing myself maybe these clinics weren’t as corrupt as I had heard, and that maybe the horror stories were just that. Maybe I was being dramatic, I was just stressed, these women were nice, etc blah blah
They asked for a urine sample and the woman who introduced herself as a nurse and another woman, appeared, but didn’t introduce herself, and had me sit in a room, them across from me, like an interview. They had notepads and internally I start freaking out at this point and I am about to get up and leave because everything now feels incredibly off, but the woman asks if I took a home test, I say yes. She looks at me , smiling “How did you feel, when you saw that positive test.?” I was already visibly nervous and upset at that point and so when she asked that it felt very invasive. I started to explain that I wasn’t oblivious to what they were doing and said I’d like them to stop. They backed off some and started back tracking, asking if I wanted to just get the ultrasound done, for my peace of mind. I definitely should have left, but like I said, my headspace was STRESSED and extremely anxious and I just WANTED to KNOW something. It didn’t even occur to me they might lie about what was on the ultrasound, or anything. I don’t know why it didn’t, but I know I wasn’t thinking clearly at all, and while I had started accepting that they would pressure me into keeping the pregnancy, I started trying to rationalize that I didnt think it was legal for them to do an ultrasound, a medical exam, if they weren’t qualified to do so?…. I still have so many questions and didn’t realize how little I knew about my own rights, and the legal aspects surrounding these things, until now.
I was showed a screen, (not the one the nurse used, she kept that turned to get the entire time) and showed me a normal enough seeming ultrasound. She did one on my stomach and one internally. I didn’t see a noticeable baby, just a sac… I did think I saw flickering, like when I saw my firsts heartbeat, at one point, but she moved the wand away and didn’t speak almost the entire time, never pointing anything out. I know this sounds so stupid but I assumed it was another organ? Or glitching maybe I don’t know…she apologized for being quiet, said she “had to concentrate.” She finally tells me what feels like 5 years later, I look to be 5 weeks 0 days. I take her word for it. I’m pretty overwhelmed. The other woman, (counselor, nurse, stranger????) was in the room the entire time, sitting behind me. Again I’m realizing how absurd this is now that I’m replaying it, and I’m mortified, but it happened and now here I am. Looking back they were uncomfortably quiet, and offered no reassurance really. But then as I’m preparing to leave, while I’m just going through the motions and lost in my thoughts, they tell me they want to try to hear the heartbeat next week, they’re sure they’ll be able to then. They’re almost like, giddy, lose any air of “professionalism” and hand me a box wrapped in a pink bow, that I opened at home and found out had a newborn onesie inside, that said “best gift ever.”
I’m still reeling. This was 2 Weeks ago. I’m upset. I feel stupid. I’m confused and feel like I was taken advantage of, in a way. And worst of all, I am now second guessing everything I thought I “found out.” The ultrasound picture they gave me, was cut off at the top. There is no date, time, name or gestational weeks.. I didn’t go to the follow up appointment, and instead scheduled an appointment with the office I went to for my first pregnancy. But I didn’t tell them what happened or that i had an ultrasound done already, I just told them the date of the positive test, and last suspected period. (Even though, with suspicious clinic saying 5 Weeks- that would mean I had a “period” after I was already pregnant- which is what led me to wonder if I was further along) couldn’t get me in until next week, when, if I go off of the ultrasound, would make me 9 weeks. Normal timing to be seen but I have been on a mental rollercoaster.
I feel like I’ve “popped” this past week, I have a noticeable bump, and everything just feels very off. I have been so depressed and confused I haven’t tried to get any help sooner because I’m just ashamed. But it is worrying me to death that maybe they lied, and my ultrasound was a fake, and I’ve now waited too long to have a choice. I think I decided I want to go through with this anyway, but I now wonder how much of my decision is being influenced by what happened? Pregnancy hormones are already difficult, my life has been chaos and while I think I’m making the decision based on my own choice, I’m not sure I can even trust myself and my decision making anymore after all this confusion… I really need any advice, guidance, support I don’t know. Am I being paranoid? Am I losing it? Is it unlikely a pro life clinic would really go that far?… I’m under too much stress to know what may just be me overreacting, and what is genuinely a concern, and what to do about it all either way. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

2024.05.21 08:07 cherrymachete Suspect arrested 30 years after elderly woman found stabbed to death in her home

Suspect arrested 30 years after elderly woman found stabbed to death in her home
Thanks to meticulously preserved DNA evidence, police have arrested a murder suspect over 30 years after a woman was killed in her home.
Rose Hnath, 78, was found on the floor of her Pennsylvania home on 21 January 1989. She had been beaten and stabbed to death.
Ms Hnath had tried to fight off whoever had broken into her home in the Coplay section of North Whitehall Township, investigators said, but they were unable to pinpoint a suspect until this year.
On Thursday, Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin P Holihan announced that Michael Breisch, 65, had been arrested on suspicion of her murder.
"Although [the case] went cold, it was never forgotten and it was never put aside," the District Attorney said at a press conference.
Police were called out to Ms Hnath’s home after her family went to check on her when she failed to show up for her regular church service.
They found her with multiple stab wounds and other signs of trauma. Her home had also been ransacked and it appeared as if the victim had tried to fight off her attacker.
In doing so, Mr Holihan said she aided officers in collecting vital evidence on her killer.
Mr Holihan praised the work of officers at the time of the murder for collecting and preserving vital evidence that was used to identify the suspect using a new form of DNA testing not available in 1989.
That evidence included a knife and pellet gun found near the crime scene, which police believed could have been used by whoever killed Ms Hnath.
"They didn’t know that the pieces they collected would somehow be able to be tested for touch DNA. But they did their job and did it well... It’s a testament to the work they did then," the DA added.
Mr Holihan explained that DNA touch testing was used to match the evidence to Mr Breisch, meaning very small samples left behind on the preserved items were able to be tested at a level not possible 30 years ago.
Back then, the suspect was supposed to have been held at a community corrections facility in nearby Allentown. He was arrested and charged with escaping from that facility 10 days after Ms Hnath’s murder.
After his arrest in Ohio, Mr Breisch was extradited to Pennsylvania, where he is being held at the Lehigh County Jail pending an initial hearing on 21 May.
As for Ms Hnath’s family, the district attorney said they were “gratified and relieved” that an arrest had finally been made.

2024.05.21 07:19 nebulnaskigxulo First ML Project Question

Hello all,
I'm currently doing my first ML project, and I have the issue that the loss rate does not really decrease (at least over the first three epochs). The ML training is supposed to be a binary text classification based on pretrained SciBERT, torch and sklearn. I attach the code below. Am I doing something obviously wrong with the settings/code or is it just that the input data sucks? (they are rather imbalanced, so I wouldn't be surprised; don't have any choice in improving this though, since I don't have time for that at the moment).
I would be immensely grateful for any input.
import pandas as pd from sklearn.model_selection import train_test_split from sklearn.utils import resample from transformers import AutoTokenizer, AutoModelForSequenceClassification, Trainer, TrainingArguments import torch from torch.utils.data import Dataset import os import glob def load_data(file_path): # Read the CSV file into a DataFrame df = pd.read_csv(file_path) # Encode the classification column into binary labels df['label'] = df['classification'].apply(lambda x: 1 if x == "external_rd" else 0) # Debug: Print the initial class distribution print("Class distribution before up-sampling:") print(df['label'].value_counts()) return df def balance_data(df): # Separate majority and minority classes df_majority = df[df.label == 0] df_minority = df[df.label == 1] # Debug: Print the sizes of the majority and minority classes print(f"Number of majority class samples: {len(df_majority)}") print(f"Number of minority class samples: {len(df_minority)}") # Check if there are any minority samples if len(df_minority) == 0: raise ValueError("No minority class samples found.
