Indonesia and Malaysia: Nationalism, Heroes, Past and Future Through Film

INTRODUCTION

In the last post, Indonesia and Malaysia: Javanese vs Malays, I focus on the differences between the dominant ethnic groups in Indonesia and Malaysia, the Javanese and Malays, the focus was historical and philosophical. For this post, I will examine how history and nationalism influence the film of the two countries. While I will focus on Malay and Javanese influence on the popular culture of the two countries, I will take broader national perspectives.
Nationalism sells at the Malaysian box office, while in Indonesia, it doesn't. The difference has to do with Malaysian's yearning for a more cohesive national identity. In contrast, given the indoctrination of the Sukarno and Suharto years, Indonesians don't feel the need to rally around the flag. Whether it's Mat Kilau, Hang Tuah, or characters in Paskel, Malaysian directors are drawn to the heroic archetype. In contrast, Indonesian heroes are often depicted as frail and human-like or even anti-heroes.
As I mentioned in Indonesia and Malaysia: Javanese vs Malays, Malays are future-orientated, while the Javanese circle back to the past, Indonesians are focused on preserving and recording the past, while Malaysian are much less so. In terms of popular culture, Malaysians it's about action and the future. In contrast, for Indonesians, the past, tradition, and nostalgia are like a guling (Dutch wife) that comforts them through uncertainty and darkness.

Ethnicity and Censorship

For this post, for Malaysia, I will focus on Malay language films. For Indonesia, I will concentrate on Indonesian language films, even though many Indonesian films increasingly use a lot of regional languages like Javanese in their dialogue. While there have been a lot of popular video-on-demand films from Indonesia, I won't bring them up, because it is still relatively new in both countries.
While censorship exists in both countries, I don't think it has much impact on what is popular. A lot of Indonesian films like KKN: Desa Penari could be made in Malaysia, it just wouldn't be popular, and a film like Munafik wouldn't be popular in Indonesia.

Nationalism At The Box Office

Among the top 10 Malaysian movies at the Malaysian Box Office, three of them can be described as "nationalist" movies -- Mat Kilau (2022), Paskal (2018), and its sequel Air Force The Movie: Selagi Bernyawa (2022). In contrast, the only movie that could be described as loosely nationalist is the movie about Habibie, Indonesia's 3rd President titled Habibie&Ainun in 2012. In the top fifty, the only two other nationalist films are sequels to Habibie&Ainun.
Paskal (2019) and No Indonesian Equivalent
Paskal released in 2019 is based on the naval operation conducted by PASKAL, the main special operations force of the Malaysian Royal Navy, formed in 2011, where they rescued the Malaysian-operated MV Bunga Laurel which was hijacked by Somali pirates. PASKAL generated RM30 Million at the box office. In 2011, Indonesia also conducted a similar operation, when the Indonesian-operated MV Sinar Kudus was hijacked by Somali pirates. As of yet, no Indonesian film or documentary has been made about the incident.
Indonesia has other hijacking situations like the Garuda 206 in 1981 and the Mapenduma hostage crisis in 1996 in which Prabowo Subianto, the current Defense Minister, lead the operation to free the hostages. A movie about Garuda 206 was planned in 2014 but was canceled. As for Mapenduma, a book in English has been written about it, but again no movie.
Mat Kilau (2022) and Titi Mangsa (2019)
Mat Kilau was a film about Mat Kilau, the leader of the Pahang Rebellion (1891-95). It is the highest-grossing Malaysian movie in history, it has generated a lot of commentaries in Malaysia, both negative and positive. It was directed and written by Syamsul Yusof.
Titi Mangsa (The Moment) was a film about the last moments of Diponegoro, leading to the famous painting, "The Arrest of Diponegoro" painted by Raden Saleh in 1857. The movie was based on Diponegoro's "autobiography" Babad Diponegoro. Diponegoro launched a rebellion known as the Java War of 1825. Diponegoro, the first son of the Sultan of Yogyakarta, was passed over for his younger half-brother. The film was released by the Department of Education, Magelang District, Central Java. This is the third in a series of historical films by the Magelang schools district.

I decided to make the comparison between Mat Kilau and Titi Mangsa because they occurred in the same century, had elements of Islamic jihad against the infidel and both were eventually crushed by European colonizers, There have been other nationalist films in Indonesia in the last decade, but they focus on War or Independence 1945-49 or were broader in scope like Sultan Agung Mataram 1628 (2018).
First, what Titi Mangsa gets correct, while Mat Kilau ignores, the Pahang Rebellion and the Java War, weren't just a conflict between natives vs Europeans, but a war against new rules which the Europeans (as well as native rulers) had implemented. In Pahang's case, Sultan of Pahang and the Java war, Yogyakarta Sultanate. In Titi Mangsa also explores the divisions within Diponegoro's camp. The more Islamic factions wanted Diponogoro to establish a state run under Sharia, but Diponegoro, toward the end, wanted to fulfill the Ratu Adil prophecy held by many of his peasant supporters. This caused many of the Islamist leaders to abandon him for the Dutch.
Secondly, I don't know whether Mat Kilau's director had been watching too many Jet Lee movies which also portray the British and Indian Sepoys they used in China negatively, Moreover, there is little mention of the main British antagonist, John Pickersgill Rodger or High Clifford. In Titi Mangsa, they give significant screen time to the main Dutch antagonists Hendrik M. de Kock and Jan Baptiste Cleerens.
Thirdly, while one could argue the two movies have different purposes, Titi Mangsa was a rather conventional treatment of a historical event. The most successful film about the Java War, released in 1979, November 1828 was more novel in its treatment of the War.
Lee Chong Wei (2018) and Susi Susanti: Love All (2019)
The three biggest differences were language, timing, and themes.
First, Lee Chong Wei used a mix of Hokkien, Mandarin, English, and Malay, while Susi Susanti was in Indonesian. Secondly, Lee Chong Wei was released a year before he retired, while Susanti was released 20 years after she retired in 1998.
Lee Chong Wei was a sports movie, that talked about his struggle on the court and related struggles off the court. Susi Susanti was more political and historical, with much of the focus on what was happening off the court, with regards to her getting her citizenship and the struggle of two Chinese Indonesian coaches, Tong Sin Fu, and Liang Chiu Sia trying to recover their Indonesian citizenship. Susi managed eventually to get her citizenship, Sin Fu and Chiu Sia didn't. Tong Sin Fu eventually returned to China in 1997. Chiu Sia alternates between Indonesia and Hong Kong

Classical Heroes vs Flawed / Anti-Heroes

Malays like the classical hero archetype like Hang Tuah. While the Javanese have room for heroes like Arjuna or Krishna, their favorites are flawed / everyman heroes, like Semar in the Javanese Ramayana, or Bima in Mahabharata. For example, Gus Dur, Indonesia's 4th President's favorite character in the Ramayana was Semar, for Sukarno it was Bima.
Hang Tuah vs Ken Arok
This is the characterization of Hang Tuah by UNESCO
Hang Tuah is characterized as the most illustrious Malay hero in Malacca and represented absolute loyalty to the ruler as the ultimate champion of Malay loyalty, chivalry and obedience to tradition. Hikayat Hang Tuah symbolizes the greatness of Malacca at that time whilst projecting the bravery of the Malays.
Ken Arok. while not as popular among the Javanese as Hang Tuah among Malays, serves as an inspiration for the Satrio Piningit myth and popular fictional Indonesian characters such as Wiro Sableng.
Ken Arok founded the Singhasari Kingdom which the Majapahit Empire is the offshoot of. Ken Arok was born in 1182 and died in 1227. Like Hang Tuah there is a lot of legend surrounding Ken Arok. Ken Arok was born into a poor peasant family, who as an infant released him into river Brantas, much like what happened to Moses. However, unfortunately, his parents, he was found by a thief. Ken Arok grew up to be a legendary thief and changed his ways upon meeting a Brahim priest from India named Lohgawe. One day Ken Arok came across the wife of the lord of his district, Ken Dedes, Ken Arok was infatuated with Ken Dedes, and told Lohgawa, who prophesized from her womb would spring the kings of Java. This further sparked Ken Arok's interest and resulted in him hatching a plan to kill Ken Dedes' husband, Tunggul Ametung. Ken Arok succeeds in killing Tunggul Ametung, takes Ken Dedes' as his wife, and founds the Singasari. Tunggul Ametung Anusapati discovers Ken Arok is his father's killer and kills Ken Arok in revenge.
In Hidayat Hang Tuah, the Javanese of the Majapahit were depicted as devious, two-faced, and cunning, which isn't surprising, since even today many other Indonesians have this stereotype of the Javanese. The Javanese expect their leaders to be cunning and tricky.
Munafik Series vs Satan's Slaves Series
Munafik (2016) and Munafik 2 (2018) are part of the Malaysian horror franchise, Munafik, which is among the top 10 box office hits in Malaysia. Satan's Slave or Pengabdi Setan (2017) and Satan's Slave 2 Communion or Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion (2022 is a horror franchise based on a 1980 Indonesian Horror film by the same name. Both Satan's Slave is among the Top 10 Indonesian Films in terms of ticket sales.
In the Munafik movies, the protagonist and the hero are Adam, who becomes an Ustaz by the second film. Adams saves people from black magic and the jin. In both films, Adam overcomes and defeats practitioners of black magic. In Satan's Slave movies, the protagonists are a poor family of six hunted by a gang of Satanic cultists. Through the course of the movie, they find out the father is part of the cult. There is no hero in the films, and the protagonist just wants to survive. Unlike in the Munafik, the Ustaz in the films are powerless against the supernatural, and in the first Satan's Slave film, one ends up being killed by the satanist.
NOTE: Among the Javanese, Dukun (shaman) is just as powerful as Uztadz, and many Javanese regularly consult them. Former President Suharto during his early teens served as an apprentice of Dukun called Darjatmo. In Indonesia, there is a magazine called Misteri, which has stories about the paranormal. They have advertisements for dukuns, fortune tellers, etc. When the Javanese first arrived in Malaysia, they carved out a niche as practitioners of black magic and sorcery. And if you ask most Javanese they will say Balinese black magic is even stronger.
Some scholars have noted Indonesia's penchant for gore can be attributed in part to the propaganda-snuff-horror film, Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI, which was mandatory watching for nearly all Indonesian school children every year from 1985-1999.

Future vs Romanticism

As I said before Malays are future-oriented and the Javanese look to the past. Among the top ten Malaysian films, you have sci-fi animations for children like Mechamato Movie, Ejen Ali: The Movie, and BoBoiBoy Movie 2 as well as action movies. It seems like the films are tailored to families and young adult males.
In Indonesia, it's romance, horror, and comedy. The top 10 highest-grossing movies are dominated by 1980s remakes and films set in the 1970-90s. Warkop DKI (I and II), and Satan's Slaves (1 and 2) were all remakes of films made in the 1980s. The romantic spirit and yearning for nostalgia are found in three films Laskar Pelangi (2008), Dilan 1990 (2018), and Dilan 1991 (2019).
All the Malaysian box office hits have been original screenplays, but trodding familiar plots and themes, while Indonesian box office hits, with exception of KKN Desa Penari, are all spin-offs or novel adaptations.
Many Indonesians consciously and subconsciously yearn for the stability and simplicity of the Suharto era, to the point that a popular meme with the caption in Javanese "Piye Kabar, enak jaman ko" meaning "How's it going? Times were better under me"

https://preview.redd.it/y7ccy6x903la1.jpg?width=673&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b257b5e2abe7e65278f3d4ff1db1b316de4f8f4
NOTE: Since the fall of Suharto there have been three great Romance film series.
  1. Ada Apa dengan Cinta (1,2)
  2. Dilan (1,2,3)
  3. Ayat-Ayat Cinta (1,2)
All three are based on novels. The first is written by a female writer, and the last two are written by men. The last series is what I called the Islamic Romance genre.
Malaysian Superhero vs Bumilangit
Malaysian superheroes and animations with titles like Cicak Manm Galaxioman and others focus on the present or the future. In Indonesia, a company called Bumilangit set up in 2003, maintains a library of 1200 comic series that have been published over the last 60 years. Their focus is on trying to turn this library into films and tv series. They created a universe called Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, which has four periods
  • The Legends era, set after the volcanic eruption of Mount Toba which pushed humans to near extinction, and revolves around three fictional kingdoms,
  • The Swordsmen era was set in the 17th century with characters such as Mandala, Barda Mandrawata, Purnama Wulan Dewi Sartikawati, Selendang Mayang, and Rahayu.
  • The Patriot era, with characters such as Mardhanus, Nani Wijaya, Sancaka, and Adam.
  • The Revolution era is set in the present day.
This is a theme popular among the Javanese, as I mentioned before the Javanese place a premium on continuity. Like the Bumilangit universe, each period in Indonesia's history has its own heroes and protagonist, whether its Semar, Gajah Mada, Diponogoro, Sudirman, Gus Dur

Conclusion

I focused on films because other art forms like music and what people produce on youtube could fill up separate posts. What I wrote in my previous post was historical, this post aims to illustrate how concepts and ideas touched upon in the previous post have a direct bearing on popular culture.

2022.08.17 19:38 NocteDeSolus r/indonesia 2022 laptop guide

Halo? eh
So ini dia kembalinya laptop guide, better late than never toh? Better late than never eh? I will try to make it a bit simpler this time, but kalo gagal, oops lol
Kayak yang kemaren formatnya masih mirip mirip, disitu bakal ada rekomendasi spesifikasi yang paling make sense di kategori itu, serta 1 ato 2 rekomendasi laptop per budget, yang sebenernya itu cuma kayak panduan “nih laptop harga segini at least harus menyamai atau lebih baik dari segi spek dari laptop ini” kalo mau beli laptop yng dipasang, silahkan tapi kalo nyesel jangan salahin gw, again rekomendasi based only or spec, kalo menurut lu keyboard gk enak gak tanggung, kalau mau masih bandingin sama yang lain, cari yang sama atau lebih bagus spesifikasinya.
Again gw bukan reviewer, cuma menganalisis murni dari spesifikasi. Jadi gw gk bakal tau batre tahan berapa lama karena itu faktornya banyak banget bedasarkan pemakaian kalian, kayak mobil lah, rasa keyboard gimana, berisiknya kayak gimana atau seberapa awet laptopnya. Gw pengen bikin ini guide se basic mungkin meminimalisir jargon teknikal, kayak yang gw tulis diatas.
Tradisi komodos disini teriak “WOI THINKPAD BEKAS WOI” apalagi kalo ada yang nyari laptop murah yai, gacha…. Lu bisa hoki, bisa sial dapet unit yng ternyata hampir tewas, so do at your own risk. ini guide laptop baru woi…. Tapi jujur gw kalo budget cekak mending beli laptop mahal yng bekas, jadinya murah tu, but taun ini ya daripada gitu gw tambahin section baru khusus buat chromebook, aka laptop dibawah 4jt yng reasonable
Should you trust me? I made this before, cuma edit dikit dikit nambah kurangin dikit taun ini, bahasanya berantakan campur campur still? I’m not sorry again…. Brain thinks 2 language type 2 language
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 1: Usage Scenario
Laptop jaman sekarang masih bisa secara general bisa cuma dibagi 2, light usage sama heavy usage, meskipun garis keduanya udah mulai menipis, but in general masih belum terlalu ngeblur, berikut kriteria klasifikasi light dan heavy
Light
Heavy
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 2: Budget & Classification
Biar gampang, tiap budget gw tulis di comment aja, jadi misal lu punya budget brp, tinggal klik langsung nyampe deh, gk perlu ribet scroll
Kenapa dibawah 4juta chromebook semua?
Kecuali stock lama
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 3: Baseline Format
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: since beberapa ada yang nanya
PART 3.5: The Battery Problem
  2. .... semua balik lagi tergantung pemakaian kalian, but i can guarantee laptop light jaman sekarang bisa survive at least 5-6 jam 'light-medium usage' sementara laptop heavy at least ya 2 jam lah for light usage, you know what your're buying
sebenernya ujung ujungnya ini alesan ngeles gw kenapa gk masukin battery, but again kalo laptop light ya lu bisa expect bisa dipake sengah hari at very minimum
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 4: Technical mumbo jumbo, kinda simplified
Dari 5 spesifikasi ‘objektif’ diatas, berikut berberapa info penting, agak sedikit teknis, tapi ya, it’s better to know, misalkan anda ingin melakukan riset sendiri yang lebih mendalam.
since gw bikin table dan table di reddit sampah, gw jadiin gambar aja
Processor:
AMD & Intel masih of course, ya sekarang ada Apple si but obviously buat laptop mereka doang so skip.
Basically menurut intel, small core itu punya kira kira performance 1/2 dari big core, jadi ya you can do the math aslinya dia punya performance berapa core.

RIP MX series dibantai abis sama IGPU lol, and GTX juga retired diganti RTX, intinya bigger number = faster, oh also rip Max-Q
Speaking of Max-Q, jaman sekarang justru laptop tergantung besar & tabelnya bakal punya Watt yang beda beda. Cari informasi Watt gpu ya mesti cari dulu laptopnya, dan cari ke website merek, kalo gk ada banyak koq website review yang ngasih tau Watt nya berapa, so be careful about that. Dibawah merupakan tabel kasta graphic card Nvidia:
GRAPHIC CARD CLASS
Bagaimana untuk DGPU AMD? Kalau RX6000 series cocokin aja angkanya, misalkan RX6500 performa mirip RTX3050, tapi balik lagi laptop pake DGPU AMD dikit banget di indo jadi ya kalau emang mau banget AMD silahkan cocokan dan cari sendiri.
How about Quadro? Gw yakin mereka yang butuh gak bakalan baca guide ini… so skip deh
Storage:
Meskipun diatas kertas bedanya lumanya jauh, santai aja realitanya bedanya cuma hitungan detik, ya 2-3 detik lah. Rata rata laptop NVME Gen 3 punya speed baca 1500-2000MB/s, kebanyakan SSD budget or mainstream speed segitu, kalo yang bagus SSD max 3500MB/s. Untuk laptop NVME Gen 4, speed rata rata 5000MB/S, max 7000MB/s, tapi seperti yang dibilang kebanyakan laptop masih pake NVME Gen 3.
Layar:
Masalah layar ini agak ribet, karena gak sedikit perusahaan yang nulis spek layar se ambigu mungkin buat menipu, gak salah karena layar sering dijadiin tempat mereka cost cutting apalagi buat laptop aga murah. Standar jaman sekarang Full HD 1080P, aka 1920x1080. Also how about layar 3K, 2.8K K whatever? Basically kalo angka udah aneh gitu layar udah fix bagus.
Teknologi layar? Most masih pake LCD obviously, gak ada salahnya koq LCD, tapi sekarang apalagi untuk laptop yang agak mahal udah mulai pake OLED, kalo bahasa HP AMOLED, same same but different.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Agak ribet? Ya maaf itupun udh gw bikin sesimple mungkin, so balik lg sana keatas, pilih pny budget brp, trus klik.
Kalau kalian mau nunggu? Ya gak terlalu signifikan banget si maybe kecuali lu gamers, nvidia & amd mau ngeluarin graphics card generasi baru. Amd same same but different, intel same same.
edit: also til kalo bikin alt gak bisa langsung post, nyangkut terlalu lama di modmail yaudah, also gw gak tau mention diatas ato gk, tapi alesan utama bikin karena penasaran sama kondisi pasar laptop di indonesia sekarang, ternyata... ya okelah, but kayaknya next laptop gw macbook air deh.

2022.06.20 03:01 ShigeruAoyama What kind of representation should be receiving wider depictions and acceptance in Indonesian mainstream media?

We get it, the depiction of same sex couple in Lightyear is controversial .
Adapun kalau melihat di Indonesia, medianya cenderung Jakarta sentris (not even Pulau Jawa sentris).
Ketika si wishnutama pindah ke Net, dia juga membawa beberapa diversity, seperti Tetangga Masa Gitu, and to some degree, drama komedi The East
Kalau semisal menurut saya
  1. Agama KTP (irreligionism, atheisme, etc).
  2. Masih relevan dengan agama KTP, yakni perilaku yang sedikit banyak nggak sesuai dengan norma agama, misalnya pindah agama, perempuan yang buka jilbab dan being celebrated for it, atau pacaran beda agama, tapi endingnya adalah bisa menjalani identitas beda agama itu secara terbuka hingga pernikahan, dan being celebrated for it (like family drama tapi suami dan istri beda agama)
And no, film biografi Ahok does not count.

After going through around 30 movies, including ones that were recommended to me here. I have found no luck with them as they either talk about politics, religion or sex (which is important to note). Movies such as Selamat Pagi, Malam and Marlina si Pembunuh dalam empat babak, I enjoyed but couldn't talk about because it was too explicit.
Examples of these topics include: "Bagaimana Unsur kritik sosial ditampilkan dalam film “Sepuluh”?"
"Bagaimana makna simbolik cermin ditampilkan dalam film Laut Bercermin."
"Bagaimana unsur feminisme ditampilkan dalam film Marlina si Pembunuh Empat Babak" (which I can't pick because it talks about rape)
Is there any good Indonesian movies that maybe you have done an essay on before? Or that maybe you think would be good for one. I have to analyze, as my teacher puts it, the "unsur bahasa".
Any help would be appreciated 😃
Edit: Less obscure and newer movies if possible! Movies like Laskar Pelangi and AADC pasti udh dipilih before. I also enjoy movies with good cinematography but that's not a must

2017.05.05 12:45 SpeciaIist Not sure where to ask this; but does anyone have the piano sheets for Laskar Pelangi?

Despite the success the movie received, I was surprisingly unable to find any piano sheets for the incredible song, Laskar Pelangi. Sadly, I forgot to look for it while I was in Indonesia, so I was wondering if any of you guys may have encountered it :)
Terimah kasih ya, maaf kalo ngrepotin !

2015.11.12 09:08 tokekcowboy How do I get Indonesian films?

So I've been inspired by this post to start watching more Indonesian films. I live in Bali, and I've been studying Indonesian for more than a year. I've watched a few Indonesian films (actually Laskar Pelangi is the only one that I remember watching) but I'd love to watch more of them. The question is, where do I get them? I'm not opposed to purchasing them for a reasonable price, and I'm not opposed to...uh...getting them for free online. Do the local pirate DVD shops tend to have a good selection of Indonesian films? Is there a good place to torrent them?
