Dilemma with Airbnb host treatment - no long showers allowed and dog peed on my suitcase and clothes - how should I respond? [Spain]
Hey folks just wanted to get your thoughts on this situation I had recently.
I booked a last minute Airbnb for 3 nights recently in a big Spanish city (Airbnb was outside city center for €40 per night). It was shared with the host (a boomer Spanish lady and her puppy dog). Nowadays, I filter with Guest Favorites and only look at listings where the host is rated over 4.80. This host had 50 reviews, was a super host and the listing was a guest favorite and had a rating of 4.92
I arrived midnight (prearranged well in advance with the host as check in is only until 23h according to the listing). I immediately go to bed without showering as I had one in the previous stay and was going to exercise the next day anyway. I spend all of next day outside and return at night and take a long shower (20-30 mins) before going to bed. I sleep in the next day and the host requests that I don’t shower so long (we communicate in basic French as she doesn’t know English and I don’t know Spanish)… I say all good, I’ll keep it shorter next time. I go inside and I’m in the bathroom for about 20 mins, brushing my teeth, taking a dump etc. and am careful to only take a shower between 5-10 max minutes. I get a message from the host later that evening (translated):
Host:
Hi Appliance7717, I wanted to let you know that tomorrow the departure is at 11 o'clock also because I have to leave, I also wanted to let you know that if you would take another shower I would ask you to keep it shorter, thank you Appliance7717.
Guest:
I showered for 5 minutes today. You want it to be shorter than that?
I did spend more time in the bathroom using the toilet, brushing my teeth etc.
Or I just can’t use the bathroom for long?
Host:
No please, if that's the case it's all right.
It's just that it's a huge expense for me.
I’m in the metro when I read this message and get all flustered and take the wrong train etc. and am a bit frustrated but whatever, I’ll check out sharp 11am tomorrow and get it over with. I’d booked a hostel for the next day anyway. I also missed out on seeing the meteorite (!) whilst all this was happening 😆 but I really think I shouldn’t be sweating about this shit on vacation and walking on eggshells over something so petty…
Anyway, next day rolls up and I scramble to get things packed up and ready so I don’t upset her by checking in after 11am. I’m basically on track to check out by 10:30. Now she has a dog, 🐕 which I didn’t mention - doesn’t seem to be well trained, barked quite a lot and woke me from my sleep earlier in the day but I didn’t make a fuss at all. I’m the 5 mins where I happened to be in the kitchen without closing my room’s door, it went and peed over my suitcase and clothes. It also took a sock, chewed it up and took it somewhere else. Mind you, the host didn’t mention anything about the possibility that the dog would be doing this. I’ve lived with dogs in airbnbs before and never had this issue. Nothing in the listing or house rules about taking long showers or what to do regarding the dog like keeping the door closed etc. She dabbed the pee with paper towels, and said that I should have closed the door but did say “Désole (sorry in French). I had to ask for disinfectant spray. I was upset and was banging my hand on the forehead and expressing regret but nothing more. She saw a pair of any shorts I’m soaked in urine but absolutely no offer to clean it, extend checkout etc. It seemed perfectly acceptable that this happened. It really rubbed me the wrong way. Super hosts are meant to go above and beyond in my view, and here she was struggling to be somewhat décent. We didn’t argue or anything there, if anything I was just a bit terse and we said au revoir and I left to go do the cleaning in my next place (took about 3 hours to get vinegar, bleach, hydrogen peroxide etc.)
Thinking of the Golden Rule, I’d never do this to somebody else if I were her. I’d offer compensation or something….
Anyway, my dilemma is that I wouldn’t have any hesitation going after a hefty compensation were it some young dude or couple as host. This lady doesn’t seem financially well off, seeing as taking a long shower has an impact on her profits. And I just feel kinda bad posturing me screwing over this old lady and her puppy dog for some cash. But I absolutely do not appreciate how I was treated and goes fundamentally against my sense of decency and fairness… I also hate how Airbnb has devolved to classify such hosts as superhosts.
What would you do if you were in my shoes? What do you think I should pursue? Should I ask for compensation? Leave a poor review? I see that she already left me a review on the afternoon that I checkout out. I have a feeling that she left a negative review - I noticed this from a previous guests review as well as what the host wrote about that guest.
Host’s review of Guest plus Guest’s response:
Guest, she is a polite and clean girl, but a great consumption of hot water and electricity, I am personally, these guests are not interested since for €134 I believe that as a host I am not interested , as a host I have not had any problems now, now I have only to wait for my electricity , water and gas bills, I am a person with very few resources, and from now on I do not accept promotions, because for it it is not profitable.
Dear Host, during my stay you didn't tell me anything. Other than that, I've never had any issues with other hosts. I was almost not at the house because I was visiting the city. I was just taking regular showers and was charging my phone and laptop when I needed it. What you wrote about me, I don't think it's true or fair and I'm really sorry to read that because I thought we had a great time the whole time.
Guest’s review of Host:
I had a nice stay at Host's place. It's good for 1-3 days since the room is very small and really suitable only for sleeping (no chair, table, ..). The location is okay, a bit far from the centre, but you can get everywhere by bus or by metro.

2024.05.22 01:10 XmenOmnibus1990 The Future of KFW

First I want to start this by thanking every 6.1 thousand of you who viewed the first episode of KFW. That is almost as many people who watched the actual first episode of the show according to TEW 2020. Crazy. However, I also don't know how reddit figures out views. If someone needs to click on the post or if even a scroll by works. Either way I am incredibly humbled. I honestly thought the post would get, at most, 100 views and a majority of people to leave a dislike.
I had no idea if people would care about an insignificant wrestling company from the Cornellverse. Rest assured I am ready for KFW news tomorrow and I am hard at work writing the review for episode 2 of KFW. I just wanted to answer another round of questions that no one has ever asked.
The website... Does it work? Does it not work?
As far I can tell it works. It really does. I only live three minutes away from a public library so I wrote down the web address and went down there today. It 100% worked. It also worked when I texted my sister the web address. In doing research it seems a year ago that Reddit banned google sites. No one knows why but for some reason around that time whenever someone tried to link a google sites link it doesn't show.
I have looked into buying an actual domain, to make a real website, but that is way more work then google sites and it costs money. Not a whole lot, sure, but enough to give me pause. At the end of the day this is a silly project for my own amusement and hopefully yours.
The website if anyone wants to give it a try the long way is...
sites.google and then .com/view/kfw-com
you obviously have to combine the first section with the second. I tried it with an incognito mode on my wives email and it worked so here is hoping. If not I guess the website will be for my benefit.
The websites future?
I really hope it works for you all because I have big things planned for the website. Not only does the news get updated, the roster page, champion page, and the review page but its going to be going through an overhaul. IF you can access it then you can see by clicking on a member of the roster that it just gives the basic Cornellverse backstory for the character in question. Over the next few weeks I plan on going one by one down the roster page and updating their backstories so they have my flair to it. Its going to be a lot of work but I am excited. I have some other plans but that is a surprise.
So is it all website related?
Mostly but I do have things in the work. Technically in my save I am just about to book the Resurrection PPV so I am quite a ways away. So I will be writing reviews, news stories that correlate with what is going on in KFW (sometimes months down the line), and I am reaching out to my brother who works on indie games. I am trying to see if he is willing (if i pay him) to make the opening intro of KFW a reality. I think it would be a really fun thing to see. That is a pipe dream though that will, probably never happen.
If you have any questions or the website doesn't work let me know. If the website doesn't work for whatever reason then its just doomed.

Hazards of running in a burn area?
I can’t seem to find much online about this, but I’m wondering what hazards I haven’t considered when trail running in a burn area? I always knew you need to be cautious of falling trees or unstable ground, but what else? It certainly smells like smoke still but the air is clear, aside from a few areas still smouldering.
For reference we were just cleared to return and the burn area is huge - 37,000 hectares. I live very rural/northern Canada and I use quad trails which lead to remote fishing spots and old logging/drilling trails.

2024.05.22 01:07 xuntyhunty Is there anything we can do?

My partner (24) and I (24) moved to Chicago about 3 months ago. Neither of us had ever made a move of this size as adults, and we were completely unprepared for how difficult and expensive it would be. I spent months before my last lease was up applying for jobs and apartments, but was essentially rejected by everything because nobody wanted to take a chance on someone living out of state that they couldn’t meet in person. We got the advice from everybody to go ahead and come up and try to get established, and thought we had plenty of savings to do so, but once we were here found ourselves stuck in a cycle—-nobody would rent to us, even with a co-signer, because we weren’t employed, and nobody would employ us because we hadn’t been in the city long. Finally, we found a sublease that would rent to us, but the rent was very high, and we were pressured to sign the lease renewal right away. We thought we’d for sure be hired by the time we ran out of money, but we only recently found jobs to accept us, and they’re each only training us part time at minimum wage right now. We also had a horribly timed medical emergency costing us $800.
Please, please do not tell us what we should have done differently. We have made plenty of mistakes and could never have imagined how hard this was all going to be. But we are so close to being out of the woods, as we’re both going full time in a few weeks. Rent is due on the first and we have less than $200 in the bank and $1750 left to earn. We’re doing odd jobs, walking for wag, selling plasma and selling anything we can to try and make the difference, but it just doesn’t seem like it’s going to be enough. Our co-signer has also had emergency expenses come up and cannot do anything to help. We are considering taking out an online cash loan but I’m nervous it’s going to just make things worse.
Is there anything else we can do???

2024.05.22 01:05 NamoorNafetat Reliable and Cheap

I had a cheap walmart bike, it broke.
I want my next bike to be some sort of conversion, either ebike or motorized bike. I just want a cheap and reliable "chassis" that can handle some modifications.
Basically the toyota/honda of bikes.
I don't need the fanciest stuff. I want to keep cost as low as possible for the actual bike, the money will be spend on the kits. Preferable tho, I would like 26" wheels, 21 ish gears, a unisex/male bike, and for someone 5'10"+, and steel frame would be ideal. None of these are required. I live in America, midwest. This will obviously be a used bike, somewhere around $150ish.
Edit: Disc brakes would also be nice

2024.05.22 01:05 macabreeee Is 50/50 VFV and XEQT Good?

I am 25 years old living in Canada. I started investment since January this year. Have been consistently buy 500 CAD per month.
Currently got: VFV: 46% XEQT: 46% VDY: 8%
Should I continue with this split? Or anything better I should do?
Also, is it better if I buy every month versus buy upfront say for a year or 6 months?
Still quite new to investing any suggestion would be of great help. Thanks!

2024.05.22 01:05 sailbuminsd Whose money is it?

TL/DR: Husband won't give wife access to money she believes is shared funds.
Probably not the best place to ask for marital advice, but ... here we go. My husband and I married in 2020 during the pandemic. I sold my house and moved in with him for a few months. During that time, I renovated his kitchen, partially renovated his bathrooms, repainted his trim, and redecorated (on my dime and my sweat), before we we listed it and bought our current home. I did well on my house ($250k in profit) and he did well on his condo ($170k in profit). Home buying was insane during the pandemic. We were competing with all cash offers and got out bid by $50k several times. My realtor suggested that we do whatever we could to make our offer more attractive, so I offered to use all of the money from the sale of my house for the deposit, so that the deal wasn't contingent on the sale of my husband's condo (likely a BIG MISTAKE on my end). It worked though and we bought our first house together. When my husband sold his condo in 2021 he deposited the money into his saving account. In my mind, the profit he made from the sale of his condo is OUR money, not just his money. The differences between what he contributed to our lives is not the same as what I contributed to our lives, but that is just life. Here is the issue. He refuses to put "our" money into our joint savings account OR let me use the money to fix-up the house.
It is a little more nuanced than that, so let me explain. The house we bought was not our dream home, it needed a lot of work, but it has climbed in value over past four years (nearly 400K), so I still consider it a great investment. He doesn't love the home, but says he never wants to move again. We fixed the inside problems (e.g., cracks in the walls, poor patching, uneven floors) two years ago in a major remodel. The budget was $70k and we ended-up going over nearly $15k due to an unexpected issue in the guest bath that we did not originally plan to touch. I paid the overage because my husband became so stressed out about money. I also paid to have our fireplace remodeled because he said it was just cosmetic (which is true) and didn't need to be remodeled, but the fireplace is the focal point of the living room and I really wanted the tacky high gloss tile removed, so I paid for it to be done (with his approval of course). There were still projects that needed to be done outside, but he was clearly overwhelmed with all the changes and spending of money, so we took a break from renovations.
Last year we had to do IVF and had beautiful son. It was expensive and was mostly paid for by "our" money ($34k). I paid for the injections and aftercare myself. Our son started to crawl and loves to spend time outside, so I turned my eyes to making the outside safe and secure. There are three issues that needs to be addressed outside. First, there is uneven cement (2"difference) that were poorly patched. It is a tripping hazard for both kids and our elderly parents. Second, we don't have a fence separating the front from the back yard, people can just walk right in an take whatever they want, and if our son gets out he could wander into the street (and also I just want privacy, the Amazon delivery guy got a real show a few weeks ago). Third, part of the yard floods when it rains, covering the cement within 4-5 feet of our house, so I wanted to put in drains before it gets worse and we have flood damage on the newly renovated inside. Total cost is about $15k. Husband was totally on board, we picked all the finishes and went with what he wanted, until I asked him whether we could use "our" funds to pay for it. He threw an absolute fit.
A fight ensued about spending and saving. He won't tell me how much he wants to set aside for our "rainy day" fund. My suggestion that it be 6 months of expenses was not enough for him to feel comfortable, but he won't tell me how much more he wants in the fund (and he wont give me access to it). I suggested that each of us contribute a % monthly, but he couldn't give me a number he was comfortable with. He thinks I spend too much and he is probably right, I could reign it in, but I'm not going into debt to pay for the renovations and IVF, it is money I saved after we bought our house, from my side hustle (I have an Etsy store) and working overtime (i.e., teaching extra classes over summer and running new student orientation). It's not like I'm spending money on Starbucks or clothes or dinners out. I am literally buying cement and fencing that will last 25+ years.
He also said he wants to reserve $40k to buy a new car for himself, which bothers me a little because he doesn't need a car that fancy and I paid for my own car. He just doesn't want a monthly payment. Note, this is not something he could have done before we got married because that money was tied up in his condo, so he only has the opportunity to buy a car without a loan because I used my money as a down payment on our house.
This opened-up an entire conversation about why he won't tell me the exact amount he has left and he won't put the "rainy day" funds in our shared savings account, so that I have access (and can benefit from the perks of having a large amount in savings). I explained that given my personal history (my dad blew through their retirement savings TWICE during their 36 year marriage, she asked for a divorce when it was clear it was happening a third time), the entire situation made me really uncomfortable and angry quite frankly. From my perspective he either doesn't trust me OR there is less money in the account than he is telling me and he doesn't want me to get mad or ask questions. It's probably not the latter because he is very frugal, but without access I just don't know.
I think it is suspicious. I think he is being selfish. Am I wrong here? Is it not "our" money? The lack of access is a real problem for me. It has definitely changed the way I see him and our marriage. My thoughts have been going to some really dark places this week about the viability of our marriage.

2024.05.22 01:04 Melodic_Abroad6368 Should We Move to UK from CANADA?

Currently living in Alberta, Canada with my spouse and children and looking for a big change and something new for all of us.
I am familiar with the NW of England and have lived there 20 years ago, and are considering moving back. I know what its like to live there then, but not now.
I am wondering what things are like housing-wise in the NW of England. Are rentals hard to get into? I want to know what things you like about the UK and what things you like about Canada. What things do you hate about each country? How did you feel in each country? What was your lifestyle like in each country? What was your lifestyle like in each country?
Reasons for wanting to move: -being priced out of buying a home in the most expensive area of the province (No, we can't move to another part of the province due to spouse's type of work)
-becoming tired of the freezing cold -40C winters to spring and summers dealing with wildfire smoke. My child has asthma and the smoke makes us stay inside all day with the air purifier.
-wanting to be near my spouse's family who lives in the UK and is very supportive and helpful. We currently live near my family and they are not very helpful or interested in spending time with us
Excited to hear what you have to say.
*Looking for advise from folks who have lived in both countries. I don't want opinions from people who have not lived in both.

2024.05.22 01:04 EntertainmentMean771 Salary to cost of living advice needed from Canadian gaijn -- Moving to Japan from Canada

In Canada, I make about ¥20M~ per year. In Japan, at most I'll probably be making significantly less, but still higher than the average (approximately ¥12M-15M). My partner is newly part of a Profession that pays almost the same in Japan as in Canada (around ¥8M - ¥12M). We're extremely lucky and fortunate to be in such a high income bracket. At the same time, life in Canada has deteriorated to the point that it's not viable to stay here.
For so many reasons, this salary in Canada is barely making the cut to live comfortably. Buying a home is out of the question due to the significant life style changes that we'd suffer from to the point where it's just not worth it to live here anymore. I'm sure many Canadians will find this predicament relatable.
We've been living in Canada (one of either Vancouver or Toronto) our entire lives. We're in our mid-20s. Our parents moved here in the 90s so we could have better opportunities, and so we have benefitted from Canada so far, but it will be impossible for the next generation. We're thinking long-term now, and we want a safe place to live that is affordable and will present opportunities for future kids.
We have family in Japan, and we have significant support there than anywhere else in the world, so Japan is our best choice for options in emigrating elsewhere. I'm already working with an immigration administrative scrivener so it's already ongoing. Both my partner and I have degrees and can work in Japan in our respective fields, give or take some complex steps. Additionally, language is obviously a barrier but we're both multi-lingual so picking up Japanese won't be as difficult as a monolingual. We're also very determined to learn Japanese because of familial ties and popularity of Japanese media. So, it's not a question about if we should move to Japan in our current situation but what exactly will I expect in cost of living comparisons. I've checked from statistical benchmark sites, but want to hear first-hand experiences of this.
What realistically can we afford given conservatively we both will gross ¥15M per year in a city like Yokohama/Kawasaki? How about Tokyo? Can I afford to buy a home? Can I afford to live and go on vacation? Is it enough to raise a family? How has your life quality been impacted coming from a high cost of living city to Japan? I've heard some crazy posts saying you can live in Tokyo comfortably for around ¥200K per month. This is just simply not the case in Canada. You will be living in a shelter before you secure housing on that salary.
These questions have really been hard to answer because I don't know anyone who has experienced Canadian cost of living that moved to Japan. Most Canadians who are moving are going down to the States but for many reasons we align closer to Japan than the States so that's not in our cards.
We intend on moving to Japan forever, but at least for a few years. If we enjoy it we'll get our PR and pursue citizenship.
Is there anyone specifically from Canada (or a similar high cost of living country) who can chime in on some of their experiences? It helps if you're in tech and got a tech job in Japan.
Thank you for the long read.
TL;DR How much would ¥15M afford me in Kanto region. can you raise a family and live comfortably with this salary?

2024.05.22 01:02 TheRaven476 So About the First Season................

I just got the urge out of no where to revisit this show, I watched a bit when the show was live. I'm a couple episodes into the first season, but....... It's rough going. My main feeling right now is that it reminds me a lot of Babylon 5. Babylon 5 is one of my favorite sci fi shows of all time but the first season is really bad lol. So much so that I skip it on my rewatches. I have so many friends that say they started Babylon 5 and didn't like it, and I tell them "Honestly, a part from 1 or 2 episodes. Just skip season 1 all together." It's mostly just a "Space Station problem of the week" structure in season 1 and it really feels like B grade sci fit. The show gets EXPLONENTIALLY better with a near perfect seasons 2-4.
Do people ever feel that way about Fringe Season 1? Like it's just the "Problem of the week" season meant to cement itself in cable and the series really gets going with a strong macro level narrative after season 1?
I think when it was live I got to the end of Season 2? I remember the alternate universe being established and I believe I stopped watching when FO-livia was introduced and switched places. I'm trying to remember why I stopped watching. I made a point of taping the show while it was on, so I did like it a lot. It might have hurt it that Lost absolutely shattered my faith in mysterious, carrot dangling 'oh maybe you'll get answers to this mystery next episode' style of show. Though I know now it was executive meddling and the creators made one of the best shows of all time in The Leftovers.
Things I liked a lot:
The acting is amazing. The 4 Main Characters (Walter, Peter, Olivia, Phillip). Honestly, in this first season it feels like the actors are propping up some sub-par writing. Reminds me a bit of when I rewatched Lie to Me and didn't realize the writing was so terrible because the actors were so amazing that they completely carried the script.
Those late 2000's early 2010's vibes. Man I miss when we thought the advancements in the 90s/2000s would continue on forever and the future would be stranger than we could possible imagine. The show really captures the zeitgeist of how we all thought the trend of technology would keep going to unimaginable places.
I know the macro level narrative is there. I remember it from 15 years ago. I'm fully expecting to enjoy it once I pick up where I left off.
Things I dislike:
The obvious monster of the week format with just small nuggets of moving the plot forward.
Like I said before, the writing feels really "meh". The actors totally carry some bad dialogue with their skill though. I'm hoping this is just early show issues. I know a lot of good shows have bad writing at the start.
Man JJ Abrams feels like a guy that knows absolutely nothing about science, but really really wishes he did. We've got some serious "Spout some scientific nonsense that an average person will tune out but accept as an explanation, but really makes absolutely zero sense". I'm hoping his influence in the show drops off as it gets better as he offloads responsibility to others while he focuses on other things.
So right now I'm fully expecting the show to turn a corner about half way through Season 2? Am I right on that assumption? Does the "Bad guy of the week, X-Files" type structure drop off and stay off around then? I know from peoples comments it does eventually. I'm also hoping the show kicks it up a notch in writing quality, because right now it's not great.
I know I probably stopped watching in 2010 right before it hit it's best season in Season 3. I also know people seem very satisfied with how the show ended and tied things together. So I've got faith that good times are coming, both from what people say and the things I remember from '09. I guess I'm just hoping for a bit of a road map I can place a pin in to get me through the next 20 hours or so; and that I'm right in my expectation of a significant uptick in quality around mid-season 2.
Anyways, thanks for letting me freeform my thoughts down on paper for you all.

2024.05.22 01:02 Acceptable-Weird9353 I got off the waitlist for UC Davis, should I attend?

I got off the waitlist for Davis for Plant Biology and i'm not sure if I should accept. I had already set up to go to community college for biological sciences, but I'm worried about the cost and financial aid. My main concern is that I live 40 minutes away, so I'm really nervous about how it is going to affect my socialization if I only take specific classes in person. Is it worth it and would I get a good college experience if I don't live on campus or in the town? I'm not sure if it would be worth it to go as a freshman, or if it be better to transfer after cc?
Plus, my senior year kind of cooked me so I'm also nervous that the curriculum at Davis is going to be too rough for me since the academics at my school were not the best. However, their science and research is very appealing. 😓 please help with any advice

2024.05.22 01:00 jureumifan What to do

My dad got his right leg amputated a couple of months ago and he just got his left one done last week too (both above knee). He's 63, overweight, and has a comical amount of other health issues (on dialysis, 3 heart valves, ex diabetic, GERD, there's a tube i think in his arm but im not sure what that's related to). My mom and I help him but shes pretty old as well (53) with an existing back injury and i'm 16f + pretty short so im not very strong either. With his one leg it was pretty easy to get him in and out of the car and he could even go to the bathroom alone, but ever since his other leg got cut off life has just been bleak.
I should mention that after his second leg amputation, he spent maybe a day or so in the hospital then immediately left without any physical therapy. He still refuses to get physical therapy even after my mom and I repeatedly beg him to as it would make all of our lives easier. He says its because he doesn't want his job to fire him (he is the sole breadwinner in the house, works remotely, yes i feel horrible that he goes through so much and still works to support us so im working on getting money myself) but I feel like its more than that. He's the type of person that doesn't want to need help, and he got into an argument with my mom at the hospital over her wanting him to do the 10 days in therapy which included him saying she "just wants to send him to the old person home."
Even though its hard for us to move him around, we mostly have no problem helping him all day everyday. I do schooling online to stay at home to help and my mom quit her job when he health started to deteriorate at a concerning rate. I mostly stay in the house anyway since I moved away from all my friends like 2 years ago and I don't want anything to happen if i were to leave. The problem is that every day its an argument that just ends in me and my mom crying. My dad isn't abusive at all but he's very argumentative, and isn't really considerate to the people that care for him, even talking down and yelling at the nurses that care for him in the hospital. I just don't know what to do anymore when everyday I wake up feeling disappointed that there's another day I have to get through when my eyes still sting from the day before. I know I'm not the one suffering the most when my dad literally has no legs, but I guess its just difficult.
Is there anything we should do to help him make do until he can get a prosthetic for his right leg? I think him having at least one prosthetic would make a world of difference, but i know that you need physical therapy to even learn how to walk on them (plus im guessing it takes a long time to get one). Since he refuses therapy/treatment so much would it be possible for the prosthetic to just be something for him to stand on when transferring to the bed or toilet? Or would he still need therapy to even learn how to do that?
Any advice would make me happy and thanks for listening to my sob story :D

2024.05.22 00:59 manatee1010 How much can I expect to pay? Unusual situation requesting hand scissoring.

I have a Briard who got his "old man haircut" a month or two ago after a bout with septic pneumonia that left him with both sides shaved for chest tubes.
I've kept him in full coat his entire life and he's fantastic about being groomed. He'll stand like a statue or lay on his side and take a nap, whatever you ask him to.
We didn't want him totally nakey 🥺 so a friend who has poodles hand scissored him down to about 4" all over. Minus both sides of his ribs, which were shaved with a 40 at the vet hospital.
He's probably about 6" now and needs another trim... my poodle friend is going to be out of town for 10 weeks so we're going to have to go to a groomer.
First - is it reasonable for me, to reduce costs, tell the groomer I can bathe him and blow him out pin straight and fluffy right before he sees the groomer so all they have to do is scissor?
Is there anything I could say/do to reassure the groomer I am very capable of prepping him in an appropriate way?
I use Chris Christensen Miracle Repair shampoo and conditioner, and used CC After U Bathe Final Rinse Solution before he was scissored last time. Dry bone dry and pin straight with an HV dryer and an Ice on Ice pin brush.
Second - I live in northeast Ohio and am trying to brace myself for what the cost might look like to have him scissored to 3-4". I'd prefer a mobile groomer but can take him to a salon if need be.
The dog is really great about grooming... because of his age (almost 11) we tried to give him breaks throughout the initial scissoring process but he just kept getting back up on the table. He's still super fit, has no arthritis anywhere, and is as full of life as ever so that was a little surprising but not shocking. 🤷‍♀️ Point being - I think someone would be able to do the scissoring straight through without stopping.
His sides are only about an inch long due to the ER shave job (yes he looks silly LOL) so if it matters the trim excludes the bulk of his trunk and about half the underside of his neck.
Thoughts on how to discuss these things with a groomer? I feel like y'all probably hear a bunch of BS like this from pet owners, but I really feel like I have a good handle on my abilities and his behavior.

2024.05.22 00:59 TheStoffer Am I really OK with a CPO ‘21 Ascent?

I’ve been doing a ton of research. I don’t want to buy new; they’re too expensive these days. I want a 3-row SUV that’s relatively modern with Apple CarPlay, adaptive cruise control, a good amount of cargo space for my 150lb dog, AWD, a decent tow capacity for my motorcycle and the occasional utility trailer, and something enjoyable to drive. I don’t want to spend more than $30k.
It’s between the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot and the Ascent. Model years land on 20/21. Of the three, I like the Ascent the best, but I’m worried about the reliability. The ‘19 had the transmission issue, but that’s been resolved. But I’m hearing about problems with Apple CarPlay. And Kilmer on YouTube basically says don’t buy Subarus because of long term engine issues, with the pistons on the Boxer engine being horizontal and thus susceptible to gravity and wear, and Subaru sealing the engine blocks with silicone over rubber gaskets, and bad piston rings, yadda yadda yaddda…
But in really I’d buy a CPO Ascent under 40k miles and drive it to 100k after I pay off the loan, then trade it in. Am I realistically ok? I drive a 2010 Highlander now with 222k miles that I bought at 180k a few years ago… and while the powertrain will last for much longer, I’m tired of the headaches with the normal wear and tear and electrical issues.
So am I overreacting with the Subaru reliability issues? I don’t want to trade a headache that I own outright for a headache that costs $400+/mo. I became concerned when people in this sub said I shouldn’t buy anything over 30k miles so that I could spend more on the gold warranty even if it’s CPO, because of bad brakes, electrical issues, etc. That to me sounds like I’m buying myself into a list of constant problems. Change my mind.

2024.05.22 00:58 Murderous_Nipples Flat management replacing door entry system

England
Apologies, may be long but I’ll try to summarise mostly at the top, and then provide full excerpts of emails for detail if needed.
I own a leasehold flat and our management company is in the process of replacing our door entry system for buzzing people into the building. No consultation with flat owners was done on what the replacement system should be. The cost is being covered by insurers as the current system has been damaged by someone.
Currently the system works by the person/visitor punching in a flat number on the outside panel, this rings a phone in our flat (and also has a video screen) and we can let them in with a button. The system they’re planning to replace it with removes the phone unit in our flat and requires a phone number to be called by the system, and then we buzz the person in through an app on our phone.
Personally I think this is an unacceptable replacement due to the requirement of having a phone number for the system to call to simply be able to answer our doors.
When I asked what if someone doesn’t have a phone/doesn’t want to give their number to a company for the purpose of opening their door to guests, I was essentially told the advice is to just “buy one”. They also completely misunderstood my question of “What if I lose my phone?” - just telling me to let them know and they can remove my phone number from the system. Clearly not understanding that then I’d be without the ability to answer the door for visitors/post workers and such.
Maybe I’m being unreasonable (if you think I am please do say), but I don’t think this is a tenable solution for a replacement system.
I’m wondering if there is any legal basis to resist the new system on? It’s materially different (in my opinion at least. And I appreciate that from an outside perspective maybe it is not) from what was/currently is in place when I purchased my flat, and has potential issues that simply shouldn’t exist for a building entry system.
Happy to provide any more detail, and mildly resigned to also be told that I can’t do anything and just have to accept it.
Initial email from the management company
“Whilst this system is being bespokely fabricated we now need some details from each resident in each flat. This will be the mobile phone number that you wish to receive door entry calls from to allow access. This number will normally be the owner or tenants living there. You can have more than one mobile attached to the system. The system will call the primary number and if not answered it will then call the secondary number. You do not have to use more than one number.
When you answer the door as you would any call you will be able to see the person asking for access and speak to them on your phone. If you wish to allow access you press the hash key on your phone and this releases the door. We will give much more detail nearer the time but this is a summery for now.
All those using the system will need to download the app on the device/s they will have registered to the system to give access.”
My questions to them and their responses
“As there is to be no unit in the flats:

2024.05.22 00:57 Mediocre_Grand_432 Friend gave my phone number to police out of state, am I f*cked? (Please help)

I (18) was at the beach today in Indiana (I live in Illinois) and an officer stopped me and a group of 3 friends I was with. I had arrived separately and met them there. He saw 2 empty beers in the sand, and asked us “Who wants the ticket for them”.
I was walking 2-3 feet in front of the other three people I was with when he walked up to us, and when the cop said this, I turned around, looked at him dead in the eye; gave him my best “I don’t know what’s going on nor do I know these people” look, turned around and WALKED away. I walked away while being in perfect view of him for EASILY over a minute. No one stopped me, no one told me I could not, and there was zero issue with it at the time.
I got in my car and immediately started driving home. I ended up getting spam called by my friend, followed by a random number with the area code I was at (my friends later told me this was the officer). The only call I answered was my friends call. My friend told me to pick him up out front, and I obviously told him I could not and I was not there anymore. I did not answer any calls from the random number and ended up blocking the number after three separate calls. I have not gotten any calls since from any random numbers (2.5 hours after incident)
Afterwards I found out one of my friends ended up taking the fall for the ticket, which only ended up being littering, NOT any charges having to do with alcohol (important), and the other 2 are pitching in for the cost for said ticket as well.
Me on the other hand: The officer apparently told my friends after they gave him my number that he’ll be mailing me a ticket. He was demanding my friends for my number which was weird because he never once asked me to come back or turn around while I was walking away, and I was in his sight for EASILY a minute. He could have and WOULD have easily stopped me as I was literally walking, but he didn’t.
Question is: What do I do? Will he actually follow through with this and mail me a ticket, just from my having number? Even for a simple littering ticket? In a state I don’t live even live in?
Will this turn into a bigger charge if he wants it to? Advice would be great thank you.

2024.05.22 00:55 Adventurous_Pomelo95 Quirk Idea: Blacksmith's Dream

Izuku's Quirk combines many elements of different blacksmith techniques across reality and general fantasy themes. It allows for the enchantment of his creations, creation and forging of fantasy/hypothetical materials, and an upgradable forging hammer that started it all.
It starts off with the sudden materialization of a seemingly regular but ratty forging hammer. Anyone else that attempts to weild the hammer often feel a sense of judgment before being burned. That's all the doctor and anyone else at the time thought he could do (and thus managed to escape AFO's notice). It leads into an intrest in traditional blacksmithing, and after managing to make a usable tool, after a blinding flash of light the hammer looks line a normal, unblemished forging hammer. It feels pleased. He can now create Earthen metals in ore form at the cost of the matter around him. This limitation stays with him no matter how upgraded the hammer is, transmuting materials will always result in it being in the form of an Ore, albeit a pure Ore with no stone or impurities within it. As he gets more skilled and the more hurdels he crosses in his blacksmithing, the more abilities and occasionally knowledge he unlocks.
Eventually he would reach his full potental, and it really lives up to the name Blacksmith's Dream. * Enchanting materials and weapons with Quirk Samples (DNA or residue from the quirk itself, like Kurogiri's mist. Costs stamina to make one, and the material had better be able to withstand the intensity of the enchantment or it'll crumble into dust. Intensity refers to what part of the Quirk's abilities are being used to fuel it and how compatible with the item it is. Basic enchantments like sharpness and duribility are stackable with Quirked Enchantments, and take basically nothing away from any material, though the number of times enchanted and general skill in enchanting does increase or decrease its chances of crumbling),
*creating weapons capable of sealing away entities (prisons really love him. Villains hate being able to see and hear the world pass by without them but being soulbound to an item for all of eternity or until the damn thing breaks),
*sentient weapons(which he quickly realized his hammer was after unlocking that option, they're really just judgemental items that choose their weilder based on a trait or concept in the soul of the handler and then dont let anyone else use them until the death of the user, although they do transfer the skills of the most skilled weilder they had, this includes their original Quirk in the item's form, though slightly weakened. Izuku's is an exception because its an asshole and thinks that he should earn the right to use its skills, which... fair. But come on why does eveyone else get the easy requirements! At least he gets hints...),
*cursed weapons(mostly accidental creations, made by the corruption of a sentient weapon or the hijacking of a sealed weapon by the sealed consciousness inside it. It takes a strong soul to corrupt a sealed weapon and the things will posses anyone who equips them. Same situation with the sentient weapon one, but they are worse because they typically hate everything thats not dead or inanimate and influence the weilder to kill or go insane from the voices in their head.),
*and the ability to appraise people and items (is the diamond real or not? Is this person's Quirk compatible with this weapon or armor or does he need to reforge it and infuse it with their DNA? Is that stranger's Quirk usable to make the material I need? Is this peice of tech useable to upgrade this item?)

2024.05.22 00:54 DipMyToesIn Nontraditional background, bronze handcuffs. Next move?

I dropped out of college to play poker for a living and did that successfully for 7 years. Odd jobs/service industry for 6 years. Delivery drivepromoted to Sr Manager of a contracted home delivery operation for a major corporation for past 6 years to present.
Additionally: somatic experience practitioner, compassionate inquiry training (Gabor mate), polarity therapy, yoga instructor, 7 years participating in hundreds of ayahuasca ceremonies. Scattered teaching experience. Gave up on a life coaching LLC.
OTE ~100k this year. No benefits, but sometimes workdays are short, and not particularly demanding. Also not very stimulating, not learning much, and probably at the growth ceiling for this company/franchise (I’m the owner’s right-hand-man).
Bought a condo (interest rates suck), and a puppy, feeling stretched and that’s even with support from my mom on the mortgage. Fiancé is building a business as a therapist. Absorbing some of her startup costs & low income. Would love to find a job/path that meets some/all of the following criteria:
-remote -work with interesting tech -learn new skills -work with intelligent peiple -healthcare -401k matching -room to grow
Really I think a lot of the pressure I’m feeling is around wanting to give my lady the chance to be a full-time mom (and/or part-time worker) should she choose it. And to afford certain lifestyle upgrades and simply have some more peace of mind.
I feel qualified, and confident I could do any number of things well. But, I’m hesitant to “just pick something” because of my stage of life 36 yo and we want to start a family soon, fiancé is 33. Going back to school, even a project manager cert is daunting in terms of initial investment.
My dream would be to find a great job with a great company, wouldn’t care much what I’m doing if it’s stimulating enough and I’m learning and checks the boxes above. Since I don’t have the tech or specific background, it seems like I’d have to backstep salary-wise before I can go forward.
Sales stands out, but seems tough to crack into the tier I’d want to be at without grinding out cold calls first, plus the volatility of working commissions.
Any input/feedback or further questions are welcome and appreciated!

2024.05.22 00:54 nathanlink169 Fixing Lesser Used Crosspaths

I've seen a fair few "these are my balance change ideas for the whole game" posts, which isn't the goal. Rather than fix entire tower balance in relation to the game as a whole, I want to suggest a few changes to underused crosspaths. They're not meant to magically fix a crosspath, just bring it more in-line with the more powerful/popular one.
Feel free to tear me apart in the comments as that's how these tend to go.
I've also just realized all of these proposed changes are for bottom paths. This wasn't planned, they just seem to have the least interesting crosspath options.

2024.05.22 00:54 WildcatAlba Opinion: The loss of the expectation to get married "young" has harmed us

Hey Gerbunules. I'm posting what I wrote for the Unpopular Opinions subreddit here instead.
The average age of marriage has skyrocketed in the past few generations. Many of our grandparents would have met between 16-19 and married 18-23. Nowadays if people do get married at all it's typically in their late 20s to mid 30s. My unpopular opinion is that despite some benefits this overall has harmed younger generations.
We've lost serious young love. Outside of a legacy trope in fiction, young people taking relationships seriously from the beginning of the dating lives is pretty uncommon. The "experience" we prize so highly isn't worth much because it's apples and oranges. A four-month glorified hookup is definitely an experience, but it's not useful experience for when you do get your head on straight and look for marriage (or a longterm unmarried relationship, for people who don't wanna bother with the glamour of a wedding which is fair enough). All you do is practice using people for sex.
We've normalised having tons of relationships back to back. This can create pretty ludicrous situations where you find a suitable person but don't nab them. We view people as disposable, replacable. There's always the next swipe on Tinder. But this is an illusion. Even if you live in a big city full of people, the number of people your age and preferred sex you will actually meet in your lifetime is very limited. 1000 becomes 100 becomes 0 pretty quickly when you are looking for the next bang not the one and only MMrs Right.
We no longer view marriage as a building block to something greater. Your spouse is supposed to be someone you grow old with not merely be old with. The one major benefit of not getting married in your early adulthood - which I alluded to at the start of this post - is that you are less naive. But there are serious issues even with this:
  1. Getting married older doesn't reduce the statistical rate of divorce that much.
  2. You don't have to be naive in your late teens early 20s. If we expect young adults to be naive then they will be. The loss of the societal norm to get married young has meant we don't equip adolescents for healthy marriage. We don't tell girls how to avoid bad men, and we don't tell boys how to avoid being bad men. Have domestic violence and poor parenting become less of a problem now that everyone gets married later? No!
