2024.05.21 15:51 terryleewhite What's New in the May 2024 Lightroom Release?

What's New in the May 2024 Lightroom Release?
Hi everyone, Terry White from Adobe here, and I'm happy to share the news about today's Adobe Photography Release (May 2024). There are updates across the Lightroom Ecosystem to include Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom on Mobile, and Lightroom on Web.
Today, we are introducing a groundbreaking feature in Lightroom-Generative Remove, powered by Firefly. This innovative tool allows you to effortlessly eliminate distractions from your photos with a single brush stroke, all without the need to switch to Photoshop.
We've also improved Lens Blur (which was in Early Access), making it easier than ever to control the depth of field in your photos with professional results.

Easily remove distractions with Generative Remove (early access)

Available on Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom for mobile (iOS & Android), Lightroom for web, and Adobe Camera Raw
https://i.redd.it/axpim9fmas1d1.gif
With Generative Remove, powered by Firefly, you can easily remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, in just a few simple steps.
Distractions can ruin an otherwise great photo. Generative Remove allows you to quickly remove them with realistic, high-quality results.
Generative Remove uses Firefly technology to intelligently fill the photo behind removed items. The results on complex backgrounds are particularly impressive, like matching a detailed wallpaper pattern or the fabric on a plaid shirt. Lightroom will even give you a few variations to choose from so you'll have full creative control in picking the one you like best.
\Note that the previous "Heal" tool is now called "Remove." You'll find Generative Remove within the Remove tool, accessible via a toggle on Lightroom mobile or a check box on Lightroom for web, Lightroom Classic, and Lightroom.*
Generative Remove is powered by Firefly Image 1 Model and is available today as an early access feature to Lightroom paid plan subscribers across the Lightroom ecosystem via mobile, desktop, iPad, web and Classic.

Get a pro-quality background blur with AI-powered Lens Blur

Available on Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom for mobile (iOS & Android), Lightroom for web, and Adobe Camera Raw
https://i.redd.it/h43ibvxnas1d1.gif
Our improved Lens Blur uses the power of AI to map the foreground and background of your image to apply a pro-quality blur effect. Blur busy backgrounds to make your portraits pop, add a dramatic blur to nature photos to make the greenery stand out, or get a dreamy, blurred background from a sparkling city skyline at night.
With the interactive and flexible controls of Lens Blur, you can play around with the blur amount, change the shape of the light points or "bokeh," and customize the area you want to blur using the focus range tool.
This new release of Lens Blur includes better subject detection, the ability to create custom presets, and batch editing capabilities. Please note that the latter two features are coming soon to Android devices.

Get the perfect blur effect in a click with new Lens Blur Adaptive Presets

Available on Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom for mobile (iOS & Android), Lightroom for web, and Adobe Camera Raw
Today, we also introduce a set of brand-new adaptive presets for Lens Blur that use AI technology to apply a blur effect that's tailor-made to your photo. Presets are great for quickly finding the perfect blur look without having to dig into fine-tuned edits.
You can choose from seven Blur Background adaptive presets that change the shape and style of the blur in the background: Subtle, Strong, Circle, Bubble, Geometric, Ring, or Swirl.
After you pick a preset, you can adjust the strength of the blur with the amount slider or customize the effect further by using the Lens Blur tool controls.

What else is new in the latest Lightroom release

We've also made several updates across the Lightroom ecosystem that give you more creative control and flexibility when working on your photos and videos.
Enjoy Sony tethering support
Available in Lightroom Classic on the latest Sony digital cameras such as the Alpha 7 IV and Alpha 7R V – for a full list see here.
See your images on a big screen as soon as you click the camera shutter. We're expanding support for tethering by adding the latest Sony digital cameras so you can photograph directly into Lightroom Classic, saving precious time on your workflow. It's now even easier to review photo details, edit in real-time, and collaborate with on-set production teams and clients.
For a full list of all newly supported cameras in Lightroom see this page.
Easily move cloud files to your local drive
Available on Lightroom
At last year's Adobe MAX conference, we introduced local storage for Lightroom — the option to work with your photos and videos in Lightroom without having to import or sync them to the cloud.
With this release, it's now easier to move or archive your photos off the Lightroom Cloud and store them on your computer's internal drive, an external drive, or a local server. This is great when you want to free up space on the cloud, or for file management such as archiving past projects to a local drive.
You can select multiple files within an album, or an entire album to move to your local drive. Lightroom will ask what folder structure you'd like to use, so you can preserve the album structure locally as you move it off the cloud. This is especially useful if you have a high volume of photos and are working with numerous files at a time.
Edit videos with the Tone Curve
Available on Lightroom
You can now edit videos in Lightroom using Tone Curve. This graph-based tool enables you to fine-tune a video's brightness and contrast by simply dragging the curve control points up or down. For example, if a point on the tone curve is moved up, it becomes a lighter tone; if it is moved down, it becomes darker.
Create and play slideshows in Lightroom
Available on Lightroom
Lightroom now has a slideshow feature so you can display selected photos from your library in a slideshow format — a great way to share edits with clients, family, or friends.

Performance, reliability, and workflow enhancements to Lightroom Classic

We've also made the following improvements to Lightroom Classic, so that it performs smoothly and enables you to work more efficiently:
  • Improved cloud syncing: Images in your Lightroom Cloud will now more reliably match what you see in your Classic catalog and vice versa
  • Smoother image navigation in Develop: We've improved the responsiveness and navigation experience in Develop along with better caching
  • Optimized preview management: We have re-architected the way we generate and store previews, resulting in a much smoother experience
  • Filter by exported images: You can now filter for files by their export status and create a smart collection showing what's been exported
  • Search support for new metadata: We've introduced new capabilities to search and create smart collections by alt text, extended descriptions, and images edited with Remove or Point Color

Disclaimer: Generative Remove in Lightroom is available to all Creative Cloud members with a subscription or trial that includes Lightroom. Generative Remove is not available in China.

Our commitment to AI ethics and principles

Adobe is committed to developing AI in accordance with the company's AI Ethics principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency. As AI becomes more prevalent in content creation, Adobe believes that it is important to provide consumers with transparency about its use in the creative process. A recent study from Adobe showed that 76% of U.S. consumers emphasized the importance of knowing if online content is generated using AI. When Generative Remove becomes generally available, Content Credentials will be automatically attached to photos edited with the feature in Lightroom. Like a "nutrition label" for digital content, Content Credentials are tamper-evident metadata that can provide important information about how content was created, modified and published.
Content Credentials are built on the C2PA open standard and supported by the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), which was founded in 2019 to increase trust in the digital ecosystem. Today, the CAI has grown into a global coalition of over 3,000 members across tech, policy, media companies, creative professionals, researchers and more, all working together to add transparency to digital content.
As always, let us know if you have any questions in the comments. Cheers! Happy Lightroom Day.

2024.05.21 15:35 Ragntard Letter "to" the chairman - The future of game loops

Letter
I wasn't able to post this on spectrum for some reason so I'm sending it here! (Might be too long?) Maybe someone sees it, maybe not? But at-least I've posted my thoughts :)
https://preview.redd.it/bka0rk8qds1d1.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=7a904858339a52bb7148c9671e7093d75c3dff43
Since SC is moving into a phase where more focus is going to actual gameplay loops, I think now's the time to give ideas and feedback on what directions this should take. I've had a growing concern the last 2 years or so that the type of gameplay that CIG is moving towards won't hold up in the long run. We can have the most advanced game ever, but if the essential game loops consist of "fly to marker X, shoot or deliver something, fly to next marker" this game simply will not be enjoyable in the long run for most players.
Instead I think CIG should focus on what makes their game great, the sandbox experience! How many of us have jumped into the PTU only to spend hours experimenting with what ship fits in what, or how we can use different systems in unexpected ways?
So here's my open letter with ideas from a long time backer!

Quantum jumps

QT jumps should have the potential to be dangerous, and possibly even damage your ship, but once a jump is performed it leaves behind a trace that others can use to easier calculate a safe jump. The more people that use the same QT point, the safer it gets.
There should also be specific areas that can boost QT jumps in different ways (or make them more dangerous).

Bounty hunters

Since QT jumps leave traces, these could be scanned for ship ID codes, satellites could also help players pinpoint where a specific ship ID has been and how often they've been there. This would be used to find locations that the target is at often as if playing hot or cold. When in a "warm area" with lots of trace of the target, the hunter could then land and visit different locations and talk to NPCs for the last bit.

Exploration

Explorers could help out scanning for interesting locations in space, and good QT spots, but the most important part of this to make it fun for everyone would be procedural generation. Exploration simply won't be as fun if you can only find shipwrecks or prebuilt places.
So this is a big one, but the only true solution I see here would be procedurally generated systems. Random wormholes could show up that leads to random generated systems (these would of course not have the same fidelity as built ones, but wouldn't need cities or NPCs for the most parts).
When exploring such a system there could be a time limit until the wormhole closes again, or you could spend resources to stabilize it, you would also have to rely on crafting to actually survive in systems with potential dangers such as solar storms (that might force you to land in the safety of an atmosphere) or weather systems.

Pirates

With the more defined QT lanes, pirates would have an easier time finding common travel routes for merchants where they could get a location to sit and wait for victims. But the larger lanes would have more security, and the best merchants would use more secret lanes with QT boosts that pirates would also want to find.
Players would want to keep these secret as if more people know about these lanes, more merchants/pirates would flock there and its value would decrease.

Merchants

Much like pirates it would be a game of constantly finding new stable QT lanes that are safe and quick, the QT boosts could be temporary (lets say that an area gives a boost for maybe a week or so), and after they expire a new one would have to be found.

Mercenaries

The QT lanes would also help here, and scanning ships for ID codes that can be marked as stolen. Traveling these lanes and getting interdicted would also simply give them free targets to shoot down, and more danger for pirates hanging out at the same place.

Mechanics

Apply the same systems that ships are getting to landing zones, a mechanic could start working for a company in their distribution centers, fixing them after battles and restoring things that intruders have broken (like if an intruder has turned off the lights, or locked down a door). If you don't have markers and specific quests other than "fix the light", a good mechanic would have to have some knowledge about a certain locations systems, while a novice mechanic could do simpler tasks or work as an apprentice where someone says what to do (and gives markers to the player, a sort of "hey you! Go here and replace this thing so the lights start working").
A mechanic with lots of experience would get offered jobs at larger locations and eventually cities or maybe navy NPC ships in dry dock. They would also be able to do it alone without NPC assistance for more money.

Guilds and factions

The factions could sell some or all of the above data that their members hand in for rewards (another explorer loop) and the better the data, only the higher members would have access to it.

Radio stations

LOTS of streamers love SC, why not give them an in-game platform? (and something to do during QT for everyone else). Imagine the radio stations of GTA but live with people broadcasting things in game.
A gameplay loop would be to build broadcast towers in each system (on land you have to acquire) and maintaining them. We already have technology to send video streams during calls in game, why not let the reliant mako some purpose in game?
You could broadcast races, or just host a news show about the lore stuff.

Ship systems

These are in a really good state already, but try not to create a game loop with the systems you have, simply make them work together and see what players do with them.
If fire depends on oxygen and invaders jump onboard, let us increase the oxygen in one room for a fun explosion when they fire weapons for instance, or increase pressures to dangerous amounts for anyone without a helmet!

Animals

Some people have already lured animals onto their ships, so give us cages (simple boxes with doors we can open and close) and some form of lures like food?
These could be used simply to trap and keep creatures, or to drop the cages into enemy camps and remote unlock them! (could also be used to trap other players and NPCs?).

No-fly zones and anti pad rammers

Give us a max speed limit in some areas, this would help beginners that are landing as they have to take it slow, and pad ramming etc. would be harder as turrets could shoot down players a lot easier.
This could be done via mastermodes or some sort of "tractor beam field" thing that slows items in its area (would not exist at all stations).

Crashed ships

This is already being worked on, this is just a reminder of how great of a feature this would be, and that it should not be forgotten!
The idea that ships shot down in orbit crash to the surface and generate crash sites that in time can become dwellings is just incredible for sandbox type gameplay.
The idea is simply give us fun tools, that aren't 100% designed for only one profession or use case, but things that we can experiment with. A lot of these stated above have been described for only one profession, but like the mechanic role above, a good pirate would know how to turn off certain systems or hack into things to download maps and schematics that the mechanic also uses in day to day work (or maybe even simply kidnap a poor mechanic that already has insider info?).
And please move away from nav markers as much as possible!
Those are my thoughts, hope someone reads this and adds some ideas of their own!

2024.05.21 15:33 Commercial_Week_8394 Will I Ever Run Again? MRI Findings

Background: 30 year old female competitive long course triathlete. First tore that meniscus in April 2022. Returned to racing September 2022. Pain onset this time June 2023. Stopped running October 2023. I've had pain ever since June. The scan I attached was from November 2023 - I had one in April 2024 which says much the same but adds large areas of full thickness articular cartilage loss. My knee pretty ok to walk and cycle, but never really feels "normal", and the moment I hop or try to run, or go up stairs, I have instant pain anterior medially. Tried a hyaluronic acid which did nothing for me... I'm a nurse for work, so on my feet a decent amount.
Do you think I'll ever be pain free? Do you think my knee can get better? Do you think I'll ever run again? Or compete again? Or now that the meniscus has torn, the cartilage has worn down, the bone is therefore exposed to higher loads and I'm doomed to be on the one-way road of irreversible knee degeneration and pain?
I've pushed my body hard over the years, and expected to have to retire from sport at some point, just not this soon. Or I thought there would be cures for this stuff by the time I started having problems...
Yes I have seen a sports physician, ortho, and currently see a physiotherapist. Sports Dr and physio say it should improve. Physio says I should 100% get better and will be able to return to competing. While I appreciate his belief and optimism, and I need that, it's just weighing on my mind that after almost a year it's not gotten better :( I'm wondering if I need to adjust my expectations/goals...
What do you guys make of all this? I realise it's near impossible to make accurate diagnosis/predictions based on the information I've given you, and I will be taking responses with a grain of salt. But I'm getting desperate and am keen to hear anyone's opinion nowadays (especially if it can give me some hope).
Thanks for reading

2024.05.21 15:31 PizzAnnalisa Graphics tablet with screen or without screen?

I draw on paper, while for lineart and colors I use a graphics tablet. I would like to draw directly digitally, but I have difficulty because the graphics tablet has no screen. It's hard for me drawing and looking at the screen and not my hand. For colors and lineart I don't have the problem because the basic level of the file is the pencil drawing scanned on the PC. So for the lineart I follow the pencil lines on the PC.
I know that graphics tablets with a screen are more suitable for professionals uses. I like to draw, but I don't do it much for three reasons:
  1. I have little confidence in my abilities;
  2. I'm lazy, for example I don't like having to clean the rubber residue off the table;
  3. I have not much time.
I have the feeling that if I had a graphics tablet with a screen I could draw more for these reasons:
In general, the idea of a graphics tablet with a screen makes me feel more "free" when drawing, because I can try and try again without damaging the paper or dirtying the surface.
But I know that the graphics tablet with screen is a significant expense, so I ask myself: would I really use it? Is it worth spending this money or can I continue to use the graphics tablet without a screen?
What do you think? Can you give me some advice about graphics tablets with a screen but with a good price?
Thank you!

2024.05.21 15:06 canary_in_a_coleslaw Hidden gem for streaming movies/shows on mobile, ad-free

(I used AppRelease as flair though this is not a new app, nor is it mine. It seemed the most fitting flair though)
This app with the deceptively generic name Movies Play Box is probably the best app I've seen for streaming movies and TV shows on mobile. This version (v1.0.7) is the last version without ads. The app was pulled from the Play Store for obvious reasons but it's been working fine ever since. The only real drawback this app has is that it doesn't have casting functionality and it's not suited for Android TV. But if you enjoy streaming movies/shows on your Android phone, check this one out.
Download Movies Play Box v1.0.7 from apkcombo.net
Make sure you download v1.0.7 as newer versions do have ads

2024.05.21 14:59 SchrodingersMillion Neon: Old kernels, dependencies and initramfs

Hey all,
Been using neon for a few years but I'm still fairly new to linux. I'm wondering why all these old kernels are kept along with the initramfs? I generally take images of neon now and then (especially prior to a 'red' update) and when I'm restoring from Clonezilla I see that it's restoring all these old initramfs files (which adds a few extra minutes to the end of the image restore).
I'm not sure why there needs to be more than one old kernel/initramfs stored. When updating I'd expect neon to take care of that for me but instead I have to find a separate program to do that. These files are not small and after a while it can grow to tens of gigs, which is not insignificant.
I understand keeping one kernel (i.e. the previous working version) but keeping all kernels seems like an oversight on the OS/Discover level.
I'm currently using 'purge-old-kernels', it will keep the last working kernel and the current one but remove everything else. If you want to use this make sure you backup your OS prior to running it because It gets rid of a LOT of stuff!! It's surprising how many dependencies hang around for the old kernels, it freed up about 15 GB for me and I've been using a fresh install of neon since Feburary/March. (I'd like to hear other peoples results, only if they backup prior to doing this).
Shouldn't this be part of the upgrade on reboot? Or at least an option within System Settings -> Software Update?
I have an old image of neon when I first started switching to linux, I always felt that I was losing space and I used filelight to see where I could save space. I don't think filelight scans everything (it didn't find the humongous baloo index file) and I'm thinking that along with baloo this could be another cause.
Regardless it's not sustainable, no one wants an OS that continuously eats up free space.
To use purge-old-kernels enter the following into the terminal
sudo apt install byobu sudo purge-old-kernels
Make an image before you run it, just in case.

2024.05.21 14:48 Late_Fly_5755 Psycho-cybernetics

Hi everyone Im currently reading psycho cybernetics a book from 1960 and it’s really helpful. Basically a manual to show how we develop thought patterns and why we suffer due to the mind. I can’t recommend it enough. Of course ocd is a step up from a regular mind and it can be debilitating but there is still some golden advice in this book.
We can’t feel fear anger resentment or anything negative if our muscles are completely relaxed. I have found this to be close to the truth. Staying mindful of how our body tenses up due to our negativity can allow us to become free of negative loops. It’s basically what came first? The chicken or the egg?? Is it our thinking that causes us to tense or our tensing that then causes our thinking?? If we’re in a habit of tensing automatically our mind will then follow with what it knows. Daily relaxation and slow and deep breathing can really impact us for the better. Mindfulness meditation helps with an insight into our own body and how it works.
Read this book it’s gold and look into mindfulness and body scan meditation. The more we are aware of what is going on inside, the better we can adjust.
Also maybe don’t try identifying with having OCD. There’s no denying it’s a real horrible disorder but I have found when I stop stressing about it and thinking about it. I have less compulsions. I believe negativity causes ocd to flare up. Post breakup I was doing mental rituals and experiencing intrusive thoughts/rumination a lot more. I hope this helps some of you lot.

2024.05.21 13:55 savagestraat Diagnosed with a terminal cancer and put on hospice but actually cancer free

My father was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in summer of 2022. He went through treatment and finished April 2023 . We followed up every 3 months for ct scans and he was told he was he was cancer free every time as recently as Dec 2023. He had some chest pain in Feb 2024. We went to local ER and they did a ct scan stating he had two new masses that were cancer. We followed up with his oncologist who said he needed to wait six weeks to do a pet scan because It was the only way that he would be able to tell if it was cancer. We waited the six weeks we went back for the PET scan, but my father was not feeling well that day, so we ended up not being able to have the test. He also ended up back in the hospital where they did another CT scan and the oncologist there said that there were two large masses and they were so large that there was nothing they could do, no treatment available. He was going to die within 4 months and they put him on hospice. I called his primary oncologist and they said that they trust the hospital oncologist and there was nothing they could do. He should just stay on hospice. I didn’t think this was possible so I ordered a PET scan about a month later and found out he is actually cancer free. He just had pneumonia and that was what was clouding the CT scan so they gave him a terminal diagnosis, and put him on hospice telling him that was it. Our entire family was dealing with his death. He was in grief counseling he gave away his stuff he was preparing to die. All of us were preparing for him to die. None of this should’ve happened. They should’ve ordered pet scan before giving a terminal cancer diagnosis and recommending hospice. from where I’m sitting, it’s negligent to say the least. They didn’t do proper testing and instead told him he was terminal and he was Facing his death! He is now on hospice for absolutely no reason. We had stopped all other medications for other things he's dealing with because we were told it was pointless. He now most certainly has PTSD from this. It's destroyed so much. People have come from all over the place spending money to say their goodbyes not to mention the emotional termoil we've all dealth with and especially him. I even changed jobs to be remote so I could be with him while in Hospice. Took of countless time from work etc. All things that never should have happened. The bottom line is he was told he had terminal cancer and he was gonna die. They put him on hospice and none of that was true. He had no cancer. He has been cancer free since April 2023 and during this terminal diagnosis it is caused our family unbearable grief, and lots of money. It could’ve been avoided if the proper tests were ordered, but they were not. Is there a case?

Is this normal for a job to ask you to send all this via email?
Hi all,
Had an interview and was offered this job last week. Received this email asking for this to be sent by EOD— I did a background and credit check with this company that day using a well known platform that they paid for. Them paying for the background check is the only reason I think they’re somewhat reputable because what scam would pay for this check? I asked the talent acquisition guy emailing me if I could instead present this info in person instead for safety reasons and he said that’s fine and told me I could come in and give my info to the front desk lady. I plan to go in today and scope out the scene to see if it’s sketchy or not. But in the mean time could anyone tell me if they’ve been asked for this info from a job before. I know SIN is normal and the bank info for payroll however that’s usually done in person.. and usually the number is only needed not official documentation with your name on it.. it all just seems weird to me. And now I feel strange knowing I gave out my info for that background check.
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.21 12:16 dojo_sensei Free Tech Tools and Resources - DNS Lookup, Security Podcast, Net Scanner & More

Just sharing a few free tools, resources etc. that might make your tech life a little easier. I have no known association with any of these unless stated otherwise.
But first, in the latest Security Swarm Podcast: "Microsoft’s SFI Expansion, UK’s New PSTI Law & Updates on Change Healthcare Attack,” we discuss the cybersecurity landscape based on data from the Monthly Threat Report for May 2024. We cover a range of news items, including Microsoft’s recent announcement to expand the Secure Future Initiative, the new PSTI (Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure) Act in the UK and a significant brand impersonation campaign targeting the German financial entity Commerzbank. Additionally, you'll hear updates on the Change Healthcare ransomware attack.
We're looking for your favorite tips and tools we can share with the community... those that help you do your job better and more easily. Please share your suggestions on the IT Pro Tuesday subreddit, and we'll be featuring them in the coming weeks.
Now on to this week's list!
A Free Tool
Iamroot DNS Lookup is an online tool for resolving domain names. Supports the most-common record types and performs secondary lookups on any references in the returned DNS records. Author flems77 explains, "MX Toolbox has a lot of excellent tools, but for basic DNS lookups, I had a really hard time finding any basic and simple tool with low-key results. So, I actually made my own."
A Tip
A solution-finding strategy suggested by Bleglord:
Adding site:Reddit.com to searches for odd issues with no documentation online.
A Podcast
Packet Protector is a new offering from Packet Pushers that covers the latest security headlines as well as delving into tech and strategic insights on a wide range of essential networking topics. SevaraB says, "[it] gets into good security day-to-day operational stuff without getting quite as ranty as Steve Gibson."
Another Free Tool
SoftPerfect Network Scanner is a universal IPv4/IPv6 scanner that can ping, scan ports, and discover shared folders. Includes flexible filter and display options. lpbale0 adds, "It is robust, extensible, and updated on a regular basis. You can also integrate NMAP for Windows into it. Yea, NMAP for Windows, I said it, flame me."
A Tutorial
Modifying XML, JSON, INI configuration files without sed is a detailed blog post explaining an alternative method for adjusting config files, including the relevant code. pdp10 favors this approach to using "sed, jq, xmlstarlet, augtool for elegantly modifying config files."
