2024.03.18 11:06 LancasterRothshchild Newbie wanting to build a plane, which one?

So the title basically sums up that I'm totally new to this, in fact I don't even have a license yet, my vision is horrible, and I'm waiting for my HSA to fill up before I get Lasik and pursue it.
But, I figure, why not build it first, so I'm not getting a license, only to have nothing affordable on the market to actually fly.
I absolutely love the design of the Pietenpol Air Camper, it's usually made of predominantly balsa and fabric, and used at the time a Model A engine, which in modern times can be replaced with a small inline 4 cylinder from any little car, and doesn't need 100LL, although at high altitude, risking 87 octane might be unwise.
Anyway, what I want is something that doesn't necessarily require avgas, is easy to fly, not too fast, nice slow but steady cruising speed, and the ability to either attach floats, or large wheels, to land in fields or lakes, a utilitarian plane not unlike the ones used in Alaska, but I like old school stuff.
Other than the Pietenpol, what are some aircraft that a man can build in say 1000 hours, that meet those criteria?
If I don't get my license, at least I'll have a badass plane to sell, so I'm dead set on building one. Thanks for any pointers!

What the hell is this thing?
Behind my grandfather's house is an old mechanical shop that stopped being used in either the 70s or 80s (estimation). Primarily pretty much the only cars there are about a dozen various Corvairs (last 3 images), however this one isn't so obvious.
It's some sort or polymer or fiberglass body with a Kelmark engine in the rear, has no door handles, floor or identifying logos on it. It may be some sort of body kit, but looking up any body kit for Kelmark or Corvair hasn't shown anything yet and nobody who lives around knows what it is either.
Help me reddit, you're my only hope.

2023.10.05 22:50 jeffry45673 In need of old school mechanic

Looking for old school mechanic. I have a 63 corvair greenbrier, engine was running when sent to me, have rebuilt carbs. I have spark to plug 1 when at TDC and moving distributor. Was told the timing was off. I have flipped the 180 multiple times to ensure it wasn’t 180 off. This side sounds a lot more promising. Yes I have tried moving distributor back and forth while cranking it no luck.. I really think it is something small that is preventing this engine to run. Unfortunately I do no what that is. I’m looking for someone , or someone who knows someone about old school mechanics. I am new to town only passing through for college SDSU BSN program, I only go to class with women who know nothing about cars. Really just trying to make some mechanic friends who are down to help each other.. as you can probably tell by the Reddit post I am very desperate. I have tried Facebook but everyone seems to be on the other side of the state. My name is John and my number is +18052406795. Thank you guys very much.

2023.06.15 22:45 Alarming_Net8735 Purchase advice?

The project car sub isn't working rn for whatever reason, so I'm asking here. Obviously answers will be a biased but I figured I'd ask anyways. I'm choosing between two cars. One is a 1964 Corvair Monza with a non turbo engine and a two speed auto. It's been sitting for about 20 years but the engine is free and everything seems to be working save for some electrical issues. I know the owner and he's asking $500. Only one bad rust spot. I already know a decent bit about corvairs.
The other car I'm looking at is a 1982 cutlass supreme with a 307 SBC (the owner specified that it was a 307 Chevy not a 307 olds) with a three speed auto. I was told it runs but hasn't been driven for some time, and I've never heard it run in person. The trunk is rusted through, as are the rear frame rails and a couple body mounts. Nothing crazy for a 40 year old car though. I think the owner was asking $5,000.
I don't have a ton of experience with cars but I have enough, and old cars are much simpler than new ones, and I know how to weld. Parts shouldn't be too much of an issue, the local junkyards have both corvairs and g body cars sitting around. From what I've seen online gas mileage should be about the same, with the Corvair being a little better, but that's not much of a concern.

2023.06.08 03:35 daibido1123 Need Help With A Period Correct Build And Restoration Corvair Research

Hi all.
So I'm new here, so please forgive any gaffs I may make. But I need help researching a Corvair project I may get to work on in the next year if all goes well.
So I may be coming into possession of a Corvair Turbo Convertable. It needs a lot of work, so I figured I would try rebuilding it as a period correct "What if" car. The key point is, "What if Yenko made a Turbo Stinger."
So I am trying to research period-correct aftermarket turbos other than one that came stock in the turbo model, and what exactly were the parts used in Yenko's Stage IV/V Stingers. I plan to get as much power from the engine, and car performance, while still being street-legal and having an interior in line with Stage II/III.
I aim to have this be my dream Corvair that I've wanted to build since my early teens. So right now, my biggest hurdle is documentation, which little seems to have survived, and trying to find out what parts options were on the market in the mid to late '60s.
Thank you all for your time, and sorry if this is a dumb post of mine, but any help any of you can offer, I would be greatly thankful.

2023.05.30 23:53 snakeproof Spoofing Skid Control Module.

Spoofing Skid Control Module.
Hey all, I'm the guy swapping a Prius drivetrain into my old Corvair, it's coming along nicely, the drivetrain is in and needs to be mounted and braced. As far as I know this will be the first mid engine Prius powered anything.
I have two identical running copies of the donor car, and need to collect some data from the skid control computer so I can delete it entirely.
I plan on using an electric assist juice brake setup to simplify everything, as the ABS module, master cylinder and accumulator is huge, but obviously doing so will piss hybrid controller off.
So, I'll need to simulate it. I plan on recording the data sent to and from the ABS controller and sending back the appropriate responses to keep the hybrid controller happy. I'll also need to setup an analog sensor to send regenerative braking request to the hybrid controller.
Currently I have a Macchina A0, and a pair of MeatPI dual can interfaces to MITM with.
So I ask, has anyone done anything with the Toyota hybrid system?
Does anyone here have a comprehensive DBC? I can't find one that maps out a lot of the ABS system.
Thanks y'all.

2023.05.11 21:51 jaxsonp10 Looking for "classic" project car ideas

Hello /whatcarshouldIbuy, I'm looking to purchase a ""classic"" project car, but don't really have a specific car in mind, looking for recommendations. Here's what I'm looking for:
-1950-1985ish
-Fun to drive
-Small (but I'm also 6'3" so not too small)
-Easy to work on
-Parts available for reasonably cheap
-Ideally somewhat quirky/offbeat
-Around $5k up front
I want it just as a weekender, Sunday driver, that type of thing that I cant fix up on. Not looking for power or performance at all, just something small and fun to drive. Really want a coupe, wouldn't mind a convertible. I don't want to get a big american boat or muscle car, or something "stereotypical", or really desirable (i.e. expensive).
Here are some cars I've seen that I think are cool and wouldn't mind getting, but I'm unsure about:
MGB - Maybe too small? It seems like you can get a decent fixer-uper for around $5k.
Spitfire - I think these look better than the MG and see even easier to work on with the tip up bonnet design.
'60-'64 Chevy Corvair - I think these are absolutely gorgeous and the history + engineering is super cool. Worried about how hard the flat 6 is to work on, and how it actually would be to drive (for obvious reasons). Not super into the late models
Fiat 124 Spider - I think these are also gorgeous cars, but I've heard they all rust out pretty bad? The engines on these sound heavenly. Not sure about parts
Nash Metropolitan - The ultimate in quirky, I absolutely love how these look, but unfortunately I've heard they might be kinda un-fun to drive due to poor handling? But man they're so cute, I've seen a few local ones at reasonable prices.
I love the aesthetics of 50s/Early 60s American cars, but they're all so big and I'm not really looking for that.
Are there any other small cars that are cool, offbeat, but not super expensive with parts availability out there I should keep an eye out for?

A sedan (or saloon) is a three-box passenger vehicle with A-, B-, and C-pillars divided into three compartments: engine, passenger, and cargo. A sedan typically has 4 - 5 seats and 2 - 4 doors on both sides.
As a result, the passenger compartment has two rows of seats (excluding rear-engined sedans like the Volkswagen Type 3, Chevrolet Corvair, and the Renault Dauphine). 2023.02.17 01:14 Stanced32_ is a Chevy corvair a good car for a beginner enthusiast?

I'm a high school kid, 17, looking for my first job, and fantasizing about a car I could attain and enjoy for a little while. Among them is the Chevy corvair. It seems like a nice looking classic American car, big enough for 3 people, and with the engine in the back, I imagine it might be fun to drive. I would try and get a convertible 2 door, with either a red or blue interior, and wrap the car black after restoring the paint underneath. I could hold onto it for a few years, and when I sold it it would hopefully maintain or increase in value. What misconceptions do I have, is the corvair a good car for what I'm looking for? What are some pros and cons of corvairs, what do they drive like, what kind of expirences have people had with corvairs? Thanks all.

2023.02.12 17:30 pinkfloydsthebest Changing oil filter

Probably a stupid question apologies as I'm new to corvairs and not the most mechanically inclined. I have a 67 Monza with a 65 turbo engine in it.
I am struggling to remove my oil filter during my first oil change. Most people say just loosen the nut on top on the filter and it comes off. My setup has some more plumbing on top of the nut for the turbo. Obviously can't remove the nut without removing the other line first. The issue is that all the fittings seem to be permanently attached, Id assume to try and prevent oil leaks. So how do I remove the oil filter?

Whatever I do with them they're staying mid/rear engine.
