2022.11.21 17:31 ByPr0xy Alignement between name and content?

So I'm in the process of starting a podcast with a friend of mine - and we're brainstorming names. But we struggle to find the right one - and being the geek I am, I've been playing around with ambigrams made from the topics of our podcast. And I have found one that really sticks out to me (translates to "Nightclub Red Alert" from Danish).
Now those three words have nothing to do with ultrarunning, which our podcast is about (other than being an ambigram).
But does it matter if the name does not give away to topic of the podcast? I know one can get away with almost anything if you have a name for yourself, but that's hardly the case for us :)
Ofc we would add a tagline tapping into the core of the topics.
Also I fear we would make it harder for people to find us, if our name does not include the main topic?

A treasure hunt my children made for me. I hope it gives you some ideas for your own adventures.
Edit: misspelling
Hello everyone,
My name is M. Carmen, from Spain. My family is big fan of escape rooms and scavengers or treasure hunts. Every Christmas Eve with the whole family gathering, we play games at my brother’s house. Last year, I split them in two groups and made them to look for a treasure in what resulted an awesome battle, “hunger games” style.
If you are familiar with Spanish culture, you will know that we celebrate not only Christmas, but also the Epiphany, being January the 6th when the Three Wise Men bring our presents.
So, my daughter thought it would be a petty revenge to make me get my present through a serie of clues like in a proper escape room, with our Family trips as the theme. I hope you can find it useful and even can inspire you for your own adventures.
I am an avid art journalist, and I keep an art journal for any single trip we’ve been to with memorabilia, anecdotes, silly moments… good memories and photos.
So, to start with the puzzles, my daughter handed me a wooden box with a pen drive, a folded paper and an image and text as shown:
https://preview.redd.it/7dfm56jjid591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39747ef19a255ce7588899a1c0551d1ad5662968
Starting with the picture, I recognized the Charles Bridge in Prague, one of our last trips before the lockdown. According to Google Translator, “Nejde Dolu” is “It's not going down”
I remember the day we went to the castle, at the end of the day, exhausted, my son asked why didn’t we catch a tram. I said in Spanish “no baja tranvía” (No tram down) , which is grammatically incorrect (I don’t know why I said it). So, that phrase is in my journal. It seems that “tranvía” is a clue for something.
I opened the pen drive a readme file with instructions and a power point presentation. Obviously password protected. I typed “Tranvía” and voilá, I’m in.
I saw a cctv record of different areas of my house. My son put everything together

https://preview.redd.it/024mhrvqid591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91ea549660eacad6c8e4dbe27eb5a78b135e57ce
At one point there’s an interference and the images (apparently the same ones) have subtly changed. Those changes indicated where to look for the next clues. I found several pictures of our trips and small cards with what seemed to be a map of NYC subway.
There are pictures from our trip to Amsterdam and screen shots from Google maps. Those screenshots have some numbers in different signals, and on the back of the pictures there were symbols for me to match. After a while I have matched one of our pictures with one from Google maps. I localized our pictures in street view and look exactly for that spot with the numbers. I had to substitute the numbers with the right letters to complete the puzzle.
I show you an example. Magere Brug, the narrower bridge in Amsterdam.

https://preview.redd.it/i1ab9xiajd591.jpg?width=925&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db7576ec5785b0498c3712b2ab6349922d3a92d1
Our family picture has the same symbol on the back as the street view photo. I didn’t remember the name of the bridge, so I had to look for it in my journal.
I searched Magere Brug in google maps and found the same image in street view

https://preview.redd.it/3pg6fimejd591.png?width=873&format=png&auto=webp&s=10d27d60442783c7f7c10736d04a11087a6d5792
Then I only had to check the missing letters that are marked with the numbers 8 and 9 (letters O and B). I did the same with several photos to complete a whole phrase
This puzzle led me to a bookcase. I found a little burlap bag with a lock and a picture of us at the top of the Duomo in Florence, Italy. The lower corner is cropped like a staircase. To open the lock I need a 3 digit code. Easy, I check my journal again where I wrote that the way up to the Duomo has 463 steps. That’s my code. (Yes I could have googled it, but where is the fun then?)

https://preview.redd.it/akevdy4jjd591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc664487ede0fc70a2644d05f16326af0f1e86e0
In the bag, there were a wooden box that showed “Ponte Vecchio” written in a fanciful lettering. Ok, this is easy. Our escape rooms experience and the books and films of Da Vinci Code paid off. This was obviously an ambigram. Turning the box upside down the code is clear “arcón entrada” (bench in the hallway)

https://preview.redd.it/qm0htpxnjd591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b652b63c8c4f5ec47abfe3d6328a043169912b46

https://preview.redd.it/85yct7fpjd591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc19fa3ef0316081af32965303372200089a5426
There were a couple of papers there. A maze referring to our Andorra ski trip, that showed “árbol” (tree) once solved.

https://preview.redd.it/rjjyknotjd591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72586f1cbdbdc8216ffbb24bbc7c52224b4d6ef9
And also a math puzzle. There is a limit of how many alcohol bottles, chocolate and tobacco you can pass by the border, so that’s the joke.

https://preview.redd.it/uq8t5g0xjd591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1409452a222018a8040b9f5a3c168f36b4849c6f
In the Christmas tree there was a picture from our trip to San Francisco, from the day of our bike ride to Sausalito, with a Spotify code and the text “Almost there”

https://preview.redd.it/ujwueeq0kd591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=059d0a770c81e0c889d298c51b8e6bcec1673e18
The Spotify code led me to the song “In the bedroom down the hall” from Dear Evan Hansen musical. So, easy, I went to the bedroom down the hall, where I found a box with another 3 digit lock.
Remember that I got some cards with parts of NYC subway map? Well I put them together and there were 2 highlighted names, one from Line 1, and Wall Street.

https://preview.redd.it/qxbqt2h5kd591.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ae7c382fff3152dd154ace46dbaba93be31f405
In my journal I have a picture of the entrance of the wall street station with the sign of 4 and 5 lines. My final code was 145. I opened the box and finally got my present. A set of metallic dies for crafting.
I love the effort my children put in this game and I’m very proud of them.
Of course, I had to put the whole adventure in my journal. If you want to have a look, the complete post is on my Blog.
After such a success, I am starting to plan for a new “handmade” escape room for this year Christmas party with the help of my daughter. I will keep you posted if you are interested.

2022.04.29 04:42 Blu_Spirit [Standalone] The Tattooed Royals

Original
It had been several generations since the first tattoo appeared on the Royal family. King Alistair had been the first, waking up on his 15th birthday with the word "Wise" just above the hairline. A small book had appeared on his nightstand, as mysterious as the tattoo itself. It was written in the elegant script of the ancients permanently marking his forehead, the same script that now permanently marked his forehead.
Tucked inside the book was a letter, stating that due to continued great deeds of the family's bloodline, the Goddess herself had blessed them. Henceforth, each member of the family would receive the mark of the Goddess as a reward, showing the individual's most relevant quality. The book contained the translation between the common tongue and language of the ancients.
So it was for centuries, and the words always had proven themselves, whether because of the knowledge of the Goddess, or simply the individual working to prove they were worthy of their unique mark may never be truly known. King Giustino was marked as "bringer of justice" across his right pectoral, and his wife, Queen Alika had a slender "Grace" just under her neck, perfectly centered between her collarbones. Most recent were the twins, sons of the current rulers. Prince Stian, had received the word "Wanderer" across his foot. His brother, Prince Einri, was marked "Steady" across his upper back.
Their younger sister, Princess Axelia, had barely been able to sleep the night before her fifteenth birthday. She had been waiting her whole life to receive her word. What would the goddess see in her? Would she be known as being incredibly generous, like her Aunt Jewel? Or perhaps more like her grandfather, King Baldric the "Brave"? Did the Goddess believe she was beautiful, smart, empathic? Her mind abuzz, adjectives and words of possibility running through until nearly dawn, the Princess finally dozed off.
Sleep didn't claim her long, however, as the morning sun shone through her window, rousing her. Kicking off her covers, the excited princess was too focused on finding her mark, which didn't take long as it was clearly branded across the top of her left wrist. Axelia looked at the elegant script, beautiful in its design. Tracing it with her finger softly, she realized she had never felt quite so secure as she had until this moment, even though the meaning was still unknown. Axelia thought about the history of her family's marks as well - it was rare that the tattoo showed on an extremity, and she didn't recall a single one that had been placed as hers was.
She heard a knock at her door, then Queen Alika softly spoke "Have you found it yet? We have the translation book here." Knowing the Queen's "we" included her father, and possibly her brothers as well, the princess grabbed her robe, pulling her arms through. As she called out, "Yes! Come in, come in!" Axelia moved towards the door, pushing her left sleeve up to show off her mark.
Her mother grasped her hand, the King standing behind looking down at the mark and flipping pages. He had nearly reached the end before his brow furrowed as he looked between Axelia's wrist and the page that caught his attention. Moving closer he looked again, studying the tattoo intently. "What - no - this makes little sense!" he muttered to himself. "Goddess. What does this mean?"
The queen took the book from her shaken husband. "It can't be as bad as all that." she said, holding the book next to Axelia's still outstretched arm, her eyes moving between the two. After a moment that felt like an eternity, she gasped, dropping the book to the floor.
"Axelia. Child, I am so sorry. Goddess help us, I don't understand...your mark. Never before has any member of our family had such slander! Evil bitch. EVIL BITCH!?" Queen Alika wailed. "Giustino! We can't announce such a phrase as our daughter's mark! Come, we have much to deliberate!" She ushered him out the door, as he still muttered in shock, unable to meet his daughter's eyes. Before closing the doors behind her, Queen Alika whispered angrily "Stay in your room, and do NOT let anyone see that mark!"
Torn, tears streaming at her parents reaction to what was supposed to be the most monumental occurrence in her life, Axelia sunk to the floor. She realized that the book, so precious to their family for so long, had been discarded as if it was worthless. That was, in fact, how Axelia felt, discarded and worthless.
Why would the Goddess mark her so? Her whole life, Axelia had worked to help people, protecting young children from bullies, standing up to her siblings when they picked on the less fortunate, even taking in strays or sneaking food from the royal kitchens to feed the homeless. She had been punished for this more than once, in fact, as her parents worried for the safety of an unchaperoned young noble woman wandering the streets.
Tears blurring her eyes, Axelia studied the glyphs on her arm, comparing them to what she saw in the book. She found her translation a little less than a quarter through, where she read the word "Truth’s Guard". Confused, she wiped her eyes with the edge of her sleeve. She compared the two again to be sure. "But, if I am a guardian, why did Mother call me evil?" the princess thought.
To the princess' knowledge, not one of her teachings had mentioned a curse with their boon. She slowly flipped through the pages, finding the ambigram to her tattoo near the back of the book. "Evil Bitch" she muttered, realization that each of her family could be benevolent or cruel, the word given showed both the best and worst. She slowly read through, recognizing the opposite symbols of many of the marks she had seen on her family over the years.
"Grace, vulgar. Justice, inequity. Steady, fickle. Wanderer, the lost. Brave, afraid." Axelia realized that the view of her mark showed her the positive, but the worst she could be to everyone else. It seemed that, in all the years of all the marks, no one had ventured past the positive aspect to consider that they may also have weaknesses. Once the mark was found and translated, they found no reason to continue searching the pages.
Steeling herself, considering all the good her family had done in their long rule, she vowed to protect themselves from the knowledge that the words did not make them great. Ripping out the negatives, she tucked the pages away for safekeeping. After all, one day knowing the worst might save the kingdom, but that knowledge would be hers alone to guard.

2021.07.09 20:22 snowtree218 Trilogy about a girl who travels to a fantasy world where there's an island for every hour in the day (and one for the 25th hour)

The title of the series/books is the same as the name of the fantasy world the girl travels to. It starts with the letter A and was written to the book covers as an ambigram. The books had painted illustrations made by the author. If I remember right the cover of the first book was yellow, cover of the second book was red and the cover of the third was dark blue.
At the library these books were in the YA section or the kid's section but I think these are books that also adults could read.
I don't remember when these were published but it must have been 2015 or before. I saw a paperback version of one of the books at a discount in a grocery store around the time I read these so they must not be that old.
I can't remember anything else of the author other than that he had made the illustrations and that he was a man. I do not know where the author was from or what language he wrote the books in. I do know that the books were translated to Finnish since I read them in Finnish.
I don't remember much of the plot. I remember that a man (that maybe wasn't a human) took the girl to the fantasy world. In the fantasy world people called our world hereafter or some other word with the same meaning. (I read the books in Finnish so I don't which word is used in the English versions.) I also remember that there was something odd or dangerous about the island of the 25th hour and it was called "The Island of Dreams" or something similar.
Some specific things that I remember:

2020.04.19 15:37 Lightgeass A possible Braille code

Hey everyone, so i just finished watching the movie for the first time, and i wanted to check its subreddit to check if i wasn't the only one who noticed all the little weird things, happy to see a whole community trying to decipher it :D
One thing that stroke me while watching was the secret map scene (Time : 1:51:40) image below :
I noticed a Braille-like message, unfortunately i couldn't properly decipher it, so i'm counting on you guys.
My different tries gave me theses results, my best shot was when using the Braille Grade 2
1/ Grade 1 : .(dot) wré
2/ Grade 2 : '(contraction) will rather for
3/ also found out that the first 2 symbols together give the word : "Work" , unfortunately the two others combined don't give any word, which will give us : "Work Rather For"
4/ 4th supposition is a big number which would fit with the "entries" you found earlier , i just couldn't find a good website for a valid translation.
Soo here you go if you want to dig deeper:
the word is ⠐⠺⠗⠿ or ⠐⠺⠗⠷ ( depends if you omit the last top right dot hidden by the marker )
i found this website rather useful for the translation into words, but you should search for one for number translation , specifically big numbers ( my guess is a 4 digit number since we got 4 symbols)

2017.12.06 09:43 phantom-scribbler Tomorrow, I Come

This was written by a former inmate for a weekly prison newsletter:
Christ the King Sunday, which I wrote about last time, marks the end of the Church Year. The following Sunday, which we just celebrated, is the first Sunday of Advent, the four Sundays preceding Christmas.
Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of Christ. The word comes from the Latin adventus ‘arrival,’ from advenire, from ad- ‘to’ + venire ‘come.’ As you have probably heard if you watch TV or listen to the radio at all, we are already being deluged with Christmas everything, and have been since Halloween. But it used to be that Christmas songs weren't even sung until Christmas Eve and then for the 12 days that followed until Epiphany. One of the few good things about prison was that it stripped away all the lights and tinsel and presents so that I could have a real Advent, devoid of all those Christmasy things that, often, have nothing to do with Jesus at all. So, for the next four weeks, I will give you a hymn for Advent, to help you prepare for the coming of Christ.
This week, I'm sending you one of my favorite, and one of the oldest, Advent hymns. It holds a special place in my heart. "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" ("O Ven, O Ven, Emanuel") is based on a series of prayers, called the "O Antiphons" ("Las antífonas de Adviento"), which date back to, at least, the 5th century and probably much earlier. Those prayers are themselves based on Scriptures which are, of course, precede the birth of Christ by thousands of years. They were meant to be prayed, one a day, for each of the seven days before Christmas Eve. Each prayer focuses on a title of Jesus. Here they are, with their English and Spanish translations:
Here's what's amazing about these lyrics. If you take the first letter of each Latin name backwards, it spells ERO CRAS. In Latin, that means, "Tomorrow, I come." The next day, 12/24, is Christmas Eve. So, as you are asking for Christ to come each day, at the same time, you are spelling out His answer! How cool is that‽
The reason this hymn is so meaningful to me is that I was originally arrested right before Advent in 2011. At the time, we were learning this hymn in Latin class. So it was on my mind. I was only locked up overnight before my bail was posted, but it was probably the longest night of my life. I was in my cell alone ... well ... you have all experienced what I experienced. I don't need to describe it to you.
I found I couldn't pray, but I could sing this hymn. And I did, over and over again. And, frankly, there was no prayer, no hymn, more appropriate for my situation than this one. I think I never could have understood or appreciated it fully if it had not been for the experience of prison. Who can cry out to the Key of David with more passion than someone behind a locked door? Who can pine for the dawning of the Sun of Justice more than a man who can't see the sun for all the concrete that surrounds him? And who, more than a prisoner, knows what it means to to be a captive in need of ransom?
So, sing this hymn for the next four weeks. Memorize it. I did, and I sang it for the entirety of Advent while I was in prison. It gave me hope. And I pray it will do the same for you.

2017.11.27 03:56 blackinthmiddle Do "boca abajo" and "boca arriba" both mean upside down?

I was talking to a language partner today and I don't know how it came up, but I had mentioned that "boca abajo" means face down or upside down. She said "boca arriba" means the same thing. Now that I'm looking at various translations, I see that "boca arriba" mainly means face up or on one's back. Looking at linguee.com, I see the following:
Un ambigrama es una palabra o imagen que puede leerse boca arriba o boca abajo.
which translates to:
An ambigram is a word or image that can be read upside down and downside up.
So it looks like that in some cases it can also mean upside down (or downside up, which in English we use interchangeably). Anyway, is boca arriba used as upside down/downside up or is boca abajo mainly used? Thanks in advance.
