My grandfather passed away this year and I've inherited his house in western Sydney (Kings Langley area). House is old and in need of repairs, but on a decent sized block of 720sqm. I own my house in Quaker's Hill, with a small mortgage of 100k left. I earn roughly $250k per year. My fiancee is currently renting and on 65-75k per year. She is self-employed and has an autoimmune disease, meaning she will likely never be able to work full time again. However, she has managed to save up about 230k in cash and 70k in super. I have 150k in super. I also have around 200k in cash. She works in healthcare whilst I work in I.T. I mostly work from home with the 1x a week trip into the city. She works 2 days in Eastern Suburbs and 1 day in Parramatta. She is happy commuting a further distance by train.
We would like to purchase a house together soon. To buy somewhere more desirable, we would need to sell both my properties. People are saying we should keep one property as an investment, but this means we won't be able to afford a house in a more convenient or desirable area.
I think the issue is we now have more options and are uncertain which option is the best one. We seem to have a lot of combined assets, but it doesn't get you very far in Sydney (e.g., to buy a house in Castle Hill of 2.5 to 3 million, we would still need to sell both my properties, dump all our savings in, and potentially STILL have a mortgage left...it is ludicrous...how are people surviving in this city?!). I just completed my grade 12th from India and scored a 94%. I was looking at the dubai unis here since I’m pretty new to the city . According to Reddit all the universities here suck. And the student life is extremely bad ? Is this true ? Can some of yall give me first hand experiences .
I am planning to mostly do a psychology degree and then for my masters I’ll go abroad and either do an mba or continue with a msc in psychology.
Then I got to know something about how half of the unis here aren’t “ moe “ approved and idrk what that is? Does that mean that if I study in a uk based college here I won’t be accepted into top us colleges in the USA? Or what exactly does a ministry of education approved college mean and how is that beneficial?? And is only a kdhda approved college alright??
For psychology I was mostly looking at harriot watt, university of dubai, curtin university or rak universities like the west London, bsu or American university of rak . how are they?? Or any good unis for psychology?
My only two options atleast for undergrad are either go back to India or study in the uae and tbvh the Reddit posts scared the shit outta me😭

It seems that a land value tax in a growing city would force out low income individuals/families even more than our current flawed system, possibly driving urban sprawl as it becomes more expensive to live in the city.

Would it mean they will replace EVERY job out there with robots, even doctors, lawyers and policemen for instance, as they are still done by humans?

Saying that "better" jobs exist is used as a mere excuse for some people not willing to work, like at all. Since people in the West always say that, but the truth is that they DO NOT want to work or burn some sweat, workers from poorer countries immigrating to Western countries that are desperate for employment don't care if the job is manual labor or sitting in an office cubicle for a long time, as long as it gives them a stable salary, since they exchange dollars, euros or pounds back into their local currencies to send back to their loved ones back home, so they remain indifferent if they are paid small, as like any other human, you need money to survive the contemporary society.
So, to put it, there is no point for people to talk shit or berate people who work minimum wage jobs (at the end, they will waste their own time for doing that), as they also play a part on maintenance, cleaniness or customer service and relations, it'll be completely stupid to get rid of garbage collectors or cleaners for example, as who else would tidy all of the mess up either on the streets or in your office? Robots can't do literally everything for you, as some interactions require humans to be around, like lawyers or doctors, since they need HUMANS (not robots) to have a more personal or clearer interaction with other people.
How can a robot be able to read your human emotions when you are upset, can it predict or assume if you have committed a crime, or what the verdict would be before the judge announces it? Are you going to lay off all human surgeons, doctors and nurses just to replace all of it with AI and robotics? People got to understand that jobs regardless if they are manual labor or not, have a purpose in their own way. (As why else have humans evolved through out history, it started from "manual labor" so there is zero reason to despite it so much.)

So, which one are you tempted to take despite "manual labor" job having a higher salary by this employer, as they consider that people don't want to do it, or are looking for a specific canididate who remains indifferent to the public opinion on job seeking?
So, people would only understand if "you've been through their shoes" as saying that someone working for minimum wage or manual labor is a "inferior" person to in comparison to somebody who is employed at a white collar job with a suit and tie, is just plain stupid. It's either that:
It's like saying to garbage collectors, store clerks, couriers, uber drivers, and etc. suck, if that was the case, then they'll just walk out and NEVER come back, nowadays especially with social media, they can just brag about how they are treated, it's like a cog in a machine, if they are going to find a new one, it may not be as easy once the word spreads that the companies treat them like slaves, then people would not be interested, as they want to be treated with respect, not like an animal chained to a post.
If no one replaced those who all left, overtime they'll start to lose money and the companies who employ those sectors become defunct, even for the highest paying ones that require specific skills, still need actual humans to fill in those spots, not robots. Have you ever encountered (any of) these in real life, like at all:
You can imagine what that would do to humans, as what would be the purpose of humans existing if everything was automated, machines like all technology break down, as of now, to fix and replace their physical components within a physical body, you still need a HUMAN technician. Even the female robot living in Saudi still has a HUMAN owner, as a HUMAN created her, she did not create herself.

Hi, I’m in a LDR with a guy from the Netherlands - I work and live in the UK. I work for a family business and I could work remotely in the Netherlands. I would ideally like to move to the Netherlands and work remotely for 2 weeks of the month and then 2 weeks in the UK. I can set up a company and be a consultant for the family business (this could be registered in the Netherlands) but I’m not sure how it works? Would I need to be a resident in the Netherlands - how would the UK view my tax and me living the in the UK for 2 weeks of the month. I would live with my parents when I work in the UK as I can’t afford two properties (who can!) my work is quite specific and this is why I don’t think I can have a complete career change and I do not speak Dutch although I am learning x

2024.05.19 16:59 Fast_Complaint4029 What is happening with our city?!? It is chaos!

It is, unfortunately, unsafe to go downtown anymore, especially at night. From shootings to drunk drivers to robberies, it's out of control.
Last night , 5/18/2024, a shooting took place near the parking garage of Studio Park theater. A teen, under 18, was shot in the head and killed as they rode their electric scooter around. I'm unsure of the details specifically, like if they knew one another or if their had been an altercation, but either way a teenaged girl is dead.
Another shooting nearby last night shortly after the Studio Park one.
You see the element walking around downtown, thugs and degenerates, people that don't work and yet have ample amounts of money to spend somehow. They seem to not care about society, don't care about ruining others' good times, and why would they?? We are giving money, through our taxes, to subsidize able-bodied people who don't want to work instead of those who can't, or even our veterans. It's sickening.
This applies to all races, genders, creeds too!!! It's not one. How do we get our city back? I won't go down there at night anymore, for concerts or events, there are just too many risks. What can we do?!?!?!?

For some background I live in a small town, like two cop town small, We rely on a neighboring town for night time assistance type deal.
I currently rent and have been here for about two years. Recently I received two tickets in the mail, 1 for not having a valid city sticker (I own that mistake) and 1 for not notifying the Secretary of State of a change of address.
For the city sticker, they would have had to validate that from the street. I park my car up near my garage and from the end of my driveway I can’t even tell that I have my parking sticker for work let alone if there was a city sticker there or validate the date. For reference my partner does not have a city sticker either but they face the garage as I back in and they did not receive a ticket (so it’s not likely they came fully onto the property to validate)
For the second that’s just false, I have updated the Secretary of State online and I receive all mail directly with no redirects or address updates, got an updated passport while living here, and purchased a vehicle while living here. I just haven’t updated my ID as the DMVs in my area are notoriously poorly run and I keep putting it off.
Getting compliant isn’t going to ruin me or anything but I just don’t want to play their games.
There’s a hearing for both at the Village Hall next month (essentially just a club house with some offices and a garage)
What would be the best course of action here to not just roll over and comply?

Emperor Karl V reacted to the Jiajing Emperor's invitation to bring tribute the way Mendoza had predicted he would: indifference. He was only vaguely aware of the fact Spain was in an undeclared war with China, and had only heard about the Battle of Acapulco in passing. Sending diplomats to present tribute to and grovel before the monarch of some Asian country wasn't in his wheelhouse—and he would've been even less interested if he knew that his diplomats would be meeting with one of the emperor's ministers rather than the emperor himself. Meanwhile, Antonio de Mendoza went to take up the viceregal office of Peru, where he soon caught his death of an unspecified illness.
Nevertheless, the agreement between Wei Chengjia and Bai Guguan held. Bai stopped sponsoring pirates. The NSS purchased more silver than needed, selling the excess off to Wei. Wei then sold it at cost to Bai, who sent it to China. Convoluted as it was, this system succeeded at keeping the peace.
Or at least, at keeping the peace between Xinguo and Mexico. All the pirates Bai Guguan had been sponsoring didn't simply go home: they'd gained an appetite for silk, silver, and other luxury goods. With their sponsorship dried up, they went into business for themselves. Wokou raids were now hitting the coasts of Xinguo with rapidly increasing frequency. New forts were built to repel them. Wei and Bai even agreed to a joint fortification of the Jaw, the strait that connects the open ocean to the Bay at the centre of the Valley where North and South provinces border each other. They built the Teeth forts, one on the northern tip of the Jaw and the other on the south. These were successful at keeping pirates out of the Bay itself, but they did little to dissuade attacks on the outlying coastal settlements.
What followed was the Anti-Piracy War (1553 – 1569), during which the Nine Anti-Piracy Expeditions invaded the Wokou's home territory far, far to the north in an attempt to rescue hostages and punish the pirates for their impudence.The geography of the region is difficult with choppy seas that constantly threaten to dash your ships on the many islands, and the innumerable bays and inlets not only make it easy to get lost, they provide perfect cover for ambushes.
That, however, is another story for another time. To put a long story short, the results were less than stellar for Xinguo. The most charismatic of the Wokou leaders was killed in the Battle of the Jaw (1569), and his followers fell into infighting. This enabled Xinguo to play the various factions off each other to the point where they were too distracted fighting other pirate gangs to launch any more major raids on Xinguo. Although the raids never ceased entirely, this was considered to be the end of the Anti-Piracy War.
Meanwhile, an undeclared peace settled over the undeclared war between China and Spain. With that, the Xinguans and Mexicans slowly became more familiar with each other, learned more about each other, and strengthened their economic ties. Ningbo was flourishing under the Treasure Fleet's attention. NSS merchants would buy silk, porcelain, tea, spices from the Indies, and other goods from Asia and bring them to Acapulco, where they traded for silver, cocoa, tobacco, spices from Mexico, and other goods.
However, Spanish merchants began to grow dissatisfied with this arrangement. Figuring they could get the same goods for a lower price if they went to the source, Spanish merchants began showing up in Ningbo with cargo holds full of New World goods to trade with the Treasure Fleet directly. NSS merchants immediately complained to Wei Chengjia that this would limit their profits. The NSS being the powerful lobby group that it was, their opinion prevailed and Wei decreed that only members of the NSS and DSS could trade with the Treasure Fleet directly. Some Spaniards applied for membership in the NSS, but were of course rejected.
Meanwhile, Dongguang fell into an economic slump. Businesses that had once thrived while servicing the Treasure Fleet were now closing up shop or barely staying afloat. Many packed up and moved their businesses to Ningbo. To pick up the slack, Bai Guguan pressured the DSS into accepting the Spaniards who were now applying for membership in their guild after being turned down by the NSS. The DSS resisted of course, since they didn't want a slough of foreigners taking over the guild. However, both Bai and the Spaniards painted a picture of soaring profits for them. Having members of their own guild with insider's knowledge and connections in Mexico could only be a good thing. Soon, Spaniards were showing up in Ningbo with DSS membership badges. Wei was forced to permit them to do business, but he didn't have to like it. He even passed a new law prohibiting non-Chinese, foreign-born individuals from staying the night inside the city walls, forcing them to stay in Dongguang or in small towns outside Ningbo.
In 1562, the Spaniards with DSS membership pooled their money and bought land along the Dongguang waterfront, where they built a warehouse with an adjoining office, and a pier. Savvy local businessmen built an inn, a pub, and a brothel nearby by to service the merchants and their crews. Many in Dongguang disliked this and complained to Bai Guguan that these foreigners were becoming too comfortable here. They shouldn't be allowed to own property, especially not inside the city walls. Bai, however, recognised the benefits of letting them stay, so he ignored the naysayers. Thus, the foundations of the Foreign District had been laid. Its size and prosperity would ebb and flow over the years, but it would eventually grow to be one of Dongguang's richest and most important districts.
Bai Guguan's welcoming of the Spaniards into Dongguang and even into membership with the DSS displeased Wei Chengjia. Wei decided to get back at him by refusing to sell silver at cost to Bai. This was no longer necessary for Bai, since he could now buy silver from the Spaniards who came to Dongguang, so Wei's feeble attempt at petty revenge had no serious effect. What it did mean, however, was that the treaty the two men had signed under the auspices of Cui Hejing was now as good as dead.
During this time, a linguistic shift began. Up until the 1560s, Nahuatl had been the trade language between Xinguans and Spaniards. Xinguan merchants had already been speaking it in order to trade with the Aztecs, and in the mid-16th century, it was still a major administrative language of New Spain. Beginning in the 1560s, Spanish gradually replaced Nahuatl. Most Xinguan merchants spoke either Wu (for the northerners) or Yue (for the southerners), which are mutually unintelligible. Others spoke Min, Hakka, Cham, Vietnamese, or some other language. Amongst themselves, the merchants wrote in Classical Chinese and spoke in either Mandarin or one of their own languages. Not everyone spoke Mandarin, however. Humans, whatever their nationality, tend to gravitate toward the simplest solution, and to be able to do business with Spaniards, the simplest solution was for everyone to learn Spanish.
1565 would become a pivotal year in Sino-Spanish relations, and therefore, an important year in Xin-Mei relations. That was the year the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi invaded the Philippine island of Cebu and established the first permanent Spanish presence in the archipelago. This may not have been earth-shattering in and of itself, but it meant Spain was now expanding into China's sphere of influence. Tondo, a city on the island of Luzon just down the coast from the future capital of Manila, had long been a tributary of China and was the gateway for Chinese culture, trade goods, and political influence into the Philippines. In 1570 Spain conquered Manila, and the vagaries of politics soon brought it into conflict with Tondo, and therefore with China. Chinese troops were dispatched to the Philippines and fought with the Spaniards, whose army had relatively few actual Spaniards in it, with the bulk being made up of Filipinos and indigenous Mexicans.
The details of that conflict are beyond the scope of this work. What's important for us is how it affected Xin-Mei relations.

We live in an expensive city with very low housing supply and rent keeps going up every year like 10%.
We have been looking at buying for the last 3 years but you know the deal, bid wars and then 8% rates.
We are now looking again since our rent lease is up. Ive looked at 15 homes in our price range and:
Everything is insanely priced. Like double what they sold for 5 years ago.
Everything needs repairs despite the insane asking price.
I can either buy a 130 year old home with a century old electrical system and probably asbestos, or a 50 year old condo or townhouse with an ever increasing HOA that can tell me what pets Im allowed or not.
We are thinking of putting an offer in one townhouse we dont even love but its ok and better than the rest we saw.
But honestly we are doubting even why bother. The price is inflated, my monthly costs will be higher than rent, I will be tied to a property.... and I cant even be sure anything will apreciate because of this housing bubble we are living in.
I feel crazy and scared to even entertain the idea of buying. Or is it just the normal reaction to a big decision?
