2024.05.19 09:19 AdTrick7283 The Bollywood film ‘Mohabbatein’ (2000) is a groundbreaking sex-ed film about male masturbation.

Spoilers ahead.
Bollywood’s roster of adult films is a barren wasteland, dotted by the occasional Tusshar KapooMilap Zaveri release. Yet, there may be hope for the genre as long as trailblazing production house YRF keeps churning out experimental masterpieces. For well before there were Kyaa Kool Hain Hum, Masti, and Ragini MMS, there was Mohabbatein. As on several other occasions, YRF embraced the role of innovator and at the turn of the millennium brought to Bollywood what is till date the industry’s only sex-ed film. Unlike Bollywood’s other attempts at adult cinema, Mohabbatein seeks to educate—not titillate—as moustachioed maestro Aditya Chopra examines attitudes towards male masturbation, specially amongst adolescents. To avoid offending conservative sensibilities, this sociological examination is cleverly hidden within a family-friendly romantic drama tale and presented in allegorical terms.
Mohabbatein features an ensemble cast, led by Amitabh Bachchan and DDLJ background actor Shah Rukh Khan, with Aishwarya Rai as a guest star. Although the cast also includes celebrated thespians Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj, and Shamita Shetty, a complete listing is omitted here for the sake of brevity. Bachchan plays Narayan Shankar, headmaster of the prestigious Gurukul boys’ college. Shankar is a stickler for rules, and imposes upon his students the need for tradition, prestige, and discipline. His rules extend to a blanket ban on romantic relationships, which forms the crux of the film’s conflict. SRK plays Raj Aryan, a music teacher and disgraced Gurukul alumnus who has returned to the institute under anonymity, with the single goal of melting Shankar’s icy heart and impressing upon him the power of love. Finally, Aishwarya Rai plays the deceased Megha, Shankar’s late daughter and the love interest of Raj Aryan.
In a figurative sense, Gurukul—with its forced confinement, all-male student body, and rigid rules—is a portrayal of restrictive societies that enforce adolescent sexual repression through gender segregation and harsh oversight. Narayan Shankar, as headmaster, is the enforcer of said oversight and abides by his oppressive regulations to set an example. Gurukul’s official motto—‘Parampara Prathishta Anushasan’—may be shortened to ‘PP Anushasan’, the word ‘PP’ being slang for a man’s meat pole of love and ‘Anushasan’ meaning discipline or regulation. Thus through its motto, the institution reveals its intention to exercise total control over its students’ genitalia.
Metaphorically, Narayan Shankar’s rejection of all things romantic/sexual, and his stubborn opposition to any form of change—stated by him multiple times throughout the film—is an allusion to his opposition to puberty and the sexual changes it brings along with it. His choice of garments throughout the film—dull black trousers coupled with matching black sherwanis—prevents viewers from getting a view of his lush curves and adds to his thoroughly sexless demeanour. Additionally, Shankar takes pride in his habit of staring right at the sun for several minutes every morning, which is a clever allusion to the popular myth about masturbation causing damage to eyesight—a lifetime of total abstinence from masturbation has prevented Shankar’s eyes from taking any damage, and therefore he can stare full-bore into the sun for as long as he pleases. Given all this, it is unknown how he fathered a daughter in his state of permanent prepubescence, so it may be deduced that he somehow reproduced asexually. In sum, Shankar is a man struggling to indefinitely delay his own sexual maturity, and thereby desperately clinging on to a simple, childlike innocence of all sexual matters.
Raj Aryan exists as the foil to Narayan Shankar, having arrived at Gurukul with the singular purpose of altering Shankar’s stunted outlook towards sexual maturity. In an allegorical sense, he portrays the biological agents and changes that act as messengers of puberty and sexual maturity, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormones and testosterone. Visually, his urbane, well-dressed appearance, along with his suave and cultured manner, stands in contrast to the dull cluelessness of Narayan Shankar and his wards, and is indicative of his sexual confidence and maturity.
Furthermore, his choice of musical instrument—the violin—is hardly coincidental. A violin requires precise, well-timed stroke-like movements to be made using a long, cylindrical piece of wood. The sight of Raj Aryan lounging comfortably in a chair and playing the violin with long, languid strokes, whilst wearing an expression of both contentment and pleasurable exertion, is certainly suggestive without appearing crass. The fact that his lover Megha is deceased does not decrease Raj Aryan’s passion in the slightest, as she makes an appearance in his imagination every time he leans back, closes his eyes, and handles his violin. Through such a combination of clever visual double entendres, the film conveys Raj Aryan’s use of masturbation and masturbatory fantasies as a healthy outlet for sexual expression and release.
To Gurukul’s ignorant masses, Raj Aryan is nothing short of a revelation. Like a masturbatory Pied Piper, he draws the ignorant, curious, and hypnotized students to his lessons, where he impresses upon them the need to break free of Gurukul’s restrictive confinements and open their hearts and prostate glands to the power of love. In a metaphorical sense, he encourages the students to accept the changes coursing through their bodies, and let puberty begin to run its course.
To best educate Gurukul’s students, Raj Aryan organises a secret dance ball, inviting over students from a neighbouring women’s college. Considering the allegorical nature of storytelling in Mohabbatein, the college and its students are likely imaginary, and the secret dance ball is actually an educational musical lesson on some of the more practical and logistical aspects of masturbation. YRF films have always been renowned for making their song-and-dance routines an integral part of the story, and Mohabbatein is no exception to this tradition of artistic excellence. As Gurukul’s students shuffle into the dance ball, Raj Aryan takes the centre stage and croons, ‘Aankhein khuli ho ya ho band/Deedar unka hota hai/Kaise kahoon main o yaara ye/Pyaar kaise hota hai’, with the lyrics making it clear that while there are many paths to self-pleasure, the path one takes does not matter so long as the destination is the same. With sufficient practice, a master of the art may hone his skills to the point where imagination is all that is required. Meanwhile, the less-skilled are free to keep their eyes open and rely on whatever visual aids they may prefer. Bearing in mind the wide variety of means and techniques employed, it is not for one man to tell another how best to beat his meat.
This educational demonstration, however, is cut short upon the surprise appearance of Narayan Shankar, who discovers Raj Aryan's attempt to arouse Gurukul’s pupils to rebellion against his rules. Shankar uses his authority to turn Raj Aryan’s movement temporarily flaccid, but a defiant Raj Aryan takes up Shankar’s opposition as a challenge, and vows to bring about love in every heart, a cramp in every right hand, and a scraggly hair sprouting from every smooth chin. Raj Aryan begins his campaign by asking Gurukul’s pupils to each write a love letter upon orange maple leaves. The orange maple leaf is a common visual theme throughout the movie, and for good reason—a maple leaf with its five lobes bears an uncanny resemblance to an outstretched palm with its five fingers, coloured an inflamed red perhaps due to excessive use. Thus, the act of writing a love letter upon an orange maple leaf is a clever visual metaphor for the students actually expressing gratitude and affection towards their own hands for the newly-discovered joys their hands have provided them with.
However, the ever-vigilant Narayan Shankar eventually catches onto Raj Aryan’s actions, and realizes that his fearsome gaze is no longer capable of wilting students’ defiant boners. Faced with this prospect, a desperate Shankar begins expelling students, hoping to discourage their peers and Raj Aryan, and therefore stave off the advent of puberty and sexual maturity amongst his wards. This leads to the film’s climax, wherein a gratuitously dripping-wet Raj Aryan meets Shankar, and defiantly tells him that whilst he may have won the battle, he has lost the war, for despite all his authority, Shankar will be forever left alone, because he lacks the powers of imagination and fantasizing that Raj Aryan possesses. Raj Aryan then reveals to Shankar that despite the death of Megha (Shankar’s daughter, it may be remembered), he still fantasizes about her with perfect clarity. However, as previously mentioned, Shankar had likely reproduced asexually to sire Megha, and asexual reproduction leads to genetically-identical offspring. A horrified Shankar realizes that therefore, by masturbating to Megha—his clone—Raj Aryan has been indirectly masturbating to Shankar himself for the past several years. Left shaken by this discovery of the transitive properties of masturbation, a broken Shankar is unable to recover from his shock and resigns as headmaster of Gurukul, leaving Raj Aryan to take the helm and finally bring about his purpose to a glorious conclusion.
Over two decades after release, Mohabbatein stands alone in Indian cinema. Few films have ever attempted such deftly-layered storytelling in treatment of such delicate subject matter. Indeed, if the bar were ever raised, it was only by YRF’s own other creations in subsequent years. No other films, however, have ever had the courage and wit to portray sex-ed as Mohabbatein so well did, and if the subject shall ever make an appearance in the educational curriculum, there can be no doubt that Mohabbatein shall be required viewing for all students, educators, and educational policymakers.

I recently got my hands on Juvale's 5x7 inch Cardboard Picture Frames, and I must say, they've been a game-changer in my world of DIY home decor. With their bright colors and simple yet sturdy design, these frames are perfect for personalizing with jewels, glitter, and more.
One standout feature for me was their ability to fit 5x7-inch photos perfectly. It's been great for displaying cherished moments around the house, just like snapping photos of our recent birthday party. The attached stand is convenient, making it easy to set up and show off your creations without needing an extra easel!
However, there's a minor downside to these frames: their thickness. While they look sturdy enough, they might not hold heavier items such as thick cards or large paper cut-outs. Despite this, their durability has been impressive so far, even after a few creative paint jobs!
Overall, I can't recommend Juvale's Cardboard Picture Frames enough. Their vibrant colors and simple design make them a perfect addition to any DIY home decor project or special occasion. So go ahead, unleash your creativity and make something amazing!

As a creative individual who loves DIY projects, I recently got my hands on the Juvale Cardboard Paper Picture Frame DIY Hanging Kit (50 Pack) 4x6 inch, Black, White. From the moment I unboxed it, I could tell it was going to be a game-changer for my decorating needs. Each of the 50 paper cardboard photo frames comes with a mini clothespin and a piece of hanging twine, making it easy to display various memories and artwork around my home or office.
One of the features that truly stood out during my use of this DIY kit was its versatility. Not only can you create unique framed pieces for any space, but you can also get creative and embellish these frames with different materials, like paints, jewels, rhinestones, glitter, labels, stickers, and more. I especially appreciated the fact that the frames can be displayed both vertically and horizontally, allowing me to experiment with different layouts and compositions.
Another aspect of this DIY kit that I genuinely appreciated was its affordability. Given that I received 50 frames along with clothespins and twine, it gave me ample opportunities to decorate multiple areas in my house without breaking the bank. Additionally, the black and white color options make it easy to blend these frames into any decor style.
However, it's essential to note a few cons that I encountered while using this product. Some of the cardboard frames were slightly thinner and more delicate than others, so extra care must be taken during handling. Additionally, the hanging twine provided could have been slightly longer for easier installation in various locations.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Juvale Cardboard Paper Picture Frame DIY Hanging Kit (50 Pack) 4x6 inch, Black, White for anyone who enjoys DIY projects and wants to create personalized photo displays in their homes or workspaces. Its versatility, color options, and affordability make it a worthwhile investment in your decorating endeavors.

I recently purchased these paper frames for my classroom decorations, and I must say, they have been a game-changer! The vibrant colors and fun designs instantly caught my eye. I particularly appreciated the two versatile sizes that could easily accommodate various photo sizes.
The small frames were incredibly easy to use as they were designed with a photo space that perfectly fit a letter-sized paper, making it a breeze to display student artwork or use them as props for our fun photo booth activities. However, I did find that the larger frames needed some trimming and resizing to fit smaller images, but overall, they were still worth the effort.
One minor drawback was the lack of a smaller size option, as I believe it would be even more versatile and useful in various applications. Nonetheless, these paper frames have significantly enhanced the appearance of my classroom decorations, and I look forward to using them in other creative ways.
To summarize, the paper frames are an excellent investment for anyone looking to add a pop of color and creativity to their space. They are easy to use, have a sturdy cardstock thickness, and are available in a variety of fun designs. Although they may require some trimming for certain applications, the end result is definitely worth the effort.

As a cardboard enthusiast, I recently had the pleasure of using these elegant 8.5x11 black picture frames with gold foil borders in my DIY home decor project. The moment I took them out of their 25-piece packaging, I was instantly drawn to their timeless quality and that exquisite golden finish.
One thing that truly stood out for me was how easy these frames were to set up. Their side-load design made it incredibly simple to display and switch between my favorite photos, without any hassle. Plus, the linen weave finish added a touch of sophistication to my space.
Moreover, the frames come with a pop-up easel, which allows them to be displayed horizontally or vertically. This versatility made it easy to showcase both horizontal and vertical certificates or prints, in a professional manner.
However, one minor con I experienced was that the window opening wasn't quite precise, and required a little adjustment to fit my 8x10 prints perfectly. Nonetheless, considering their excellent construction and affordability, these cardboard frames are definitely worth the investment.
So, if you're in search of a cost-effective yet elegant solution to frame your memories or certificates, look no further! These cardboard picture frames deliver on both style and functionality, making them an ideal choice for anyone in need of a little DIY touch.

I've been using the Jahosin wall paper picture frames for a month now and I must say, they've significantly upgraded my home décor. The first thing that drew me to them is their unique DIY design with linkage mounted cardboard frames and flax string clips. The 30-frame set is versatile and stylish, perfect for displaying photos, Christmas cards, and artworks at events like weddings or birthdays.
They're incredibly easy to assemble, each frame comes with its own clips and a piece of flax string, making it a fun project that the entire family can participate in. They fit standard 5x7 inch pictures, coming in three attractive colors - black, brown, and white. Their pure handcraft and non-toxic material make them a safe addition to any home, and the brilliant artwork on the fronts is a bonus.
The only downside I've noticed is that the cardboard isn't the sturdiest, so they might need extra care when being hung or moved around. But overall, these picture frames have been a great addition to my home, adding a touch of art and creativity to my living space. So if you're in the market for unique, affordable photo frames, I highly recommend giving the Jahosin 5x7 inch wall paper picture frames a try.

I recently discovered the Jahosin 5x7in Wall Paper Picture Frames and let me tell you, they've been a game-changer for my home decor. As soon as they arrived, I dove right in to create a unique and artistic display on my living room wall. The set of 30 frames comes in three colors and includes flax string and clips for easy mounting.
The first thing that stood out to me was the pure hand craft element of these frames. Made with non-toxic, harmless kraft paper material, they're not only stylish but also safe for the whole family. The quality is evident in the craftsmanship and the vibrant printing patterns that bring life to my space.
One thing I noticed is that these frames are designed specifically to hold 5x7in pictures, which made it difficult to fit some of my larger prints. However, this constraint did force me to be more creative with my photo selections, ultimately resulting in a more cohesive and eclectic display.
Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase of these DIY Photo Frames from Jahosin. They've added a unique and personal touch to my home decor while also encouraging me to curate a thoughtful collection of cherished memories. When I first tried out the Jahosin 5x7in Paper Picture Frames, I was pleasantly surprised by how stylish and creative they were. The handcrafted, non-toxic kraft paper material felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the usual plastic frames. The set came with 10 frames, 10 mini clips, and a string, making it easy to display photos, Christmas cards, and art works in a casual and artistic way.
One of the key highlights for me was how easy it was to customize these frames. The DIY linkage design allowed me to arrange the frames in various ways, making them perfect for displaying memories during special occasions like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and graduations. Plus, they also added a touch of love, happiness, and wild living spirit to my space.
However, I did notice that the frames are quite delicate, so they may not be ideal for families with young children who might accidentally damage them. Additionally, the kraft paper material can absorb moisture, making the frames more susceptible to warping or damage in humid environments.
Overall, I found the Jahosin 5x7in Paper Picture Frames to be a comfortable and creative addition to my home decor, adding a touch of warmth to any space they were placed in. I would recommend these frames to anyone looking to display their special memories in a unique and stylish way.

I recently used the Juvale Kraft Paper Picture Frames to decorate my living room and create personalized gifts for friends. The 50-pack is perfect for batch-making, especially when working on DIY projects. Crafted from cardboard, these frames are lightweight and easy to customize with paints, stickers, and other embellishments.
One feature that truly stood out was the compatibility with 4x6 inch photos, which means I could feature a variety of images from different occasions. Additionally, the kraft paper texture provides a warm, rustic touch to any space. However, I must admit that the cardboard material isn't as sturdy as traditional frames, so they might not hold up well in humid or high-traffic areas.
In conclusion, the Juvale Kraft Paper Picture Frames are perfect for DIY crafts, personalized gifts, and decorations. Their brown color and versatile size make them an ideal choice for various occasions and interior design styles. Despite the flimsy nature of the material, the ease of customization and affordability make these frames a worthwhile addition to your DIY toolkit.

As a frequent user of these 50-pack cardboard photo picture frames, I can attest to their ease of use. They are perfect for displaying your favorite 4x6-inch family photos, artwork, and memories. The attached stands allow for easy setup on surfaces like desks and tables, and you can unleash your creativity by personalizing these frames with markers, crayons, rubber stamps, colored pencils, and various paints.
However, the one thing that left me unimpressed was the size of the easel. Though it held the 4x6-inch photos nicely, I wish it had a thicker and more professional appearance. The attached stand could be more sturdy, especially if you plan on using it for more presentable purposes like selling art cards.
In contrast, I found that the frames were easy to customize, enabling me to express my artistic side while displaying my favorite memories. If you're looking for a quick and easy way to showcase your photos, these cardboard frames are a great choice. Just remember to handle them with care to prevent tearing if you decide to use them for more professional purposes.
Overall, I've had a relatively smooth experience using these frames, but there's definitely room for improvement when it comes to their sturdiness and presentation.

I recently purchased the Novelty Bank Paper Photo Frame set and it has been a game-changer for displaying my favorite memories. The simple yet elegant design of these 30 kraft paper frames sets off my photos perfectly. The art paper used is thick and flat, and the full back protects my pictures from dust and oxidation. Measuring 6 1/8 INCH tall by 4 1/2 INCH wide, with a window sized 4 INCH by 3 INCH, these frames are the perfect accessory for adding a touch of charm to my rooms and walls.
One feature I particularly love is the adjustable design, which allows me to customize the size of the window to fit different sized photos. The included wooden clips and jute string make it easy to hang these frames wherever I want, creating a visually appealing display that is sure to impress.
However, I did experience a minor issue with the quality of the jute string. It was slightly frayed and snapped after a few uses. Despite this, the overall quality of the product more than compensates for this small flaw, and I highly recommend these DIY Cardboard Photo Frames for anyone looking to enhance their space with personalized memories.

I recently started using the Juvale Cardboard Photo Picture Frames to display some of my favorite memories and I absolutely fell in love with them. These little frames are not only versatile in terms of placement- standing vertically or horizontally- but also offer a variety of bright colors like yellow, light pink, and green, that make your photos pop.
One feature that stood out for me was how easy they are to customize. You can embellish them with paints, rhinestones, glitter, stickers and other decorative elements, making each frame as unique as the person who owns it.
However, there's a minor downside too. When using bigger hands, inserting the photos into the frame can be a bit challenging. But other than that, these photo frames are perfect for displaying your special memories!
I've used these photo frames for displaying my daughter's adorable drawings, my favorite wedding photos, and even used them as party decorations. They really brighten up any space! If you're looking to add a touch of personalization and color to your photos, the Juvale Cardboard Photo Picture Frames won't disappoint you!

Tyrion's Paternity: An open question? [Spoilers Extended]
Listen. I know "Tyrion Targaryen" is a divisive topic. I don't think there's any theory that gets more vehement criticism. I understand why it gets the ire it does, and don't even wholly disagree.
Buuuut, if I can play devil's dragonlion's advocate here: The counterarguments to the theory are all...kinda shaky.
1. "It hurts the story"
I'll admit it. I (kinda) agree with this assessment. A "Tyrion's a secret Targ" reveal threatens to undermine other big elements of the story. One secret orphaned prince is a tragedy, but a dozen is a farce.
It also arguably hurts the Tyrion-Tywin relationship. I don't think it'd be ruinous as many of the critics do. But even if it were, that still wouldn't affect whether or not it's canon. This argument really doesn't address "what is or is not," but rather "what should or shouldn't be."
But writers do stuff they arguably shouldn't all the time. Fans of Star Wars will gladly tell you that midi-chlorians undermine the Force. But they're still canon, bc George said so. Martin is no more infallible than Lucas. I love these books, and I think GRRM's the bee's knees. But can you tell me with a straight face that "Joffrey sent the catspaw" was perfectly executed storytelling? Whether something's good or not is a subjective matter for the audience. But whether something's canon is wholly at the whims of the author. And it definitely seems like GRRM's whims are pointing towards A+J.
2. "GRRM was setting it up in the early books, but abandoned the idea at some point."
Yes, George is a gardener and doesn't necessarily stick to a rigid story plan. He's removed or changed big elements of the story, like the 5 year gap or the Brightflame cloth dragons. It's definitely possible that Tyrion Targaryen might have been a similarly scrapped plan.
(Small Tangent: I'm even pretty open to the idea that it was scrapped in the show. It's totally the kind of thing D&D would hate. But you can ask Griff & Stoneheart if show canon = book canon.)
The problem is, there's no clear point where GRRM stopped dropping hints that align with A+J. It still seems front and center in ASOS (2000), when Tywin makes his last on-page appearance. He explicitly calls Tyrion's paternity (and the fidelity of his beloved cousinwife) into question twice in that book, down to his last breath. Bookending Tyrion's first speaking appearance (AGOT Jon I). The very first thing Tyrion says about Tywin is "he thinks of me as a bastard." The idea of Tyrion's paternity being in doubt hangs over the Tyrion-Tywin relationship from the first moments to the last.
The relevant characters' most recent book appearance was the worldbook in 2014. (The same year GRRM gave his now famous explanation of why abandoning setup makes for bad storytelling.) Even then, GRRM was obliquely pointing to the possibility of A+J=T with relentless determination. Every single mention of Joanna is attached directly to a note about how much Aerys pursued her. Tyrion's birth is one paragraph after the tourney of 272. Where the only notable event was Aerys lusting after Joanna, deepening the rift with Tywin.
Which moves us nicely from the meta-textual arguments into the in-universe "evidence."
3. "[Pycelle said] Tywin wouldn't have married Joanna if she'd been with Aerys"
Pycelle sure did say that. Pycelle is wrong. That's the point. How can we tell? GRRM's choice of wording in Pycelle's rebuttal.
As Pycelle insists in his letters, Tywin Lannister would scarce have taken his cousin to wife if that had been true, “for he was ever a proud man and not one accustomed to feasting upon another man’s leavings.”
Pictured: Pycelle's wrongness.
The 2014 audience already knows Tywin absolutely would do that. The climax of his conflict with Tyrion was him bedding Shae. "Feasting on another man's leavings" is already a defining part of Tywin's relationship with Tyrion.
GRRM wrote Pycelle huffing copium. Conspicuously. The fanboy maester's denial depends on a claim the audience explicitly knows is false. It's just basic dramatic irony: the audience knows something the characters don't. If Pycelle's claims rests on false evidence, what is the author saying about the claim?
4. "If Tywin knew/suspected, why didn't he do anything more than try to resign?"
I'll be honest, this one blows my mind. The man sacked King's Landing and killed every Targaryen he could find. Tywin's big defining pre-stories action was brutally overthrowing Aerys' whole family. Sure he didn't do it immediately. But when circumstances permitted, Tywin took extreme vengeance.
5. "Tyrion's dragon dreams aren't Dragon Dreams"
Why the hell not? Symbolically heavy. Seemingly prophetic. Showing a destiny of magical conflict, with stakes as intimate as family identity, and as broad as globe-spanning war. Tyrion’s dreams check all the boxes for what makes up a Dragon Dream. (Or should I say, “They meet any cry-Tyrion?”)
When Tyrion first mentions dreaming of dragons, he’s telling Jon “I know your secret. You dream the same kind of dreams.” Again, dramatic irony time. Tyrion’s saying it as “I know you secretly feel alienation.” But a reader who knows Jon’s lineage knows the real secret is why Jon’s magic dreams fixate on family alienation. Because they’re Dragon Dreams. The very first thing GRRM tells us about Tyrion’s dragon dreams is that they’re comparable to Jon’s Dragon Dreams. And Tyrion’s have actual dragons in them.
Oh, and very non-coincidentally, this scene happens only 20ish pages after Dany has the first confirmed on-page Dragon Dream. Which hits all the same elements. Prophesymbolic vision of a buried dragon identity. Which emerges through the crucible of sibling struggle.
GRRM returns focus to Tyrion’s dragon dreams in ADWD. He has two such dreams during his journey east from Illyrio’s manse as part of a plot to marry Dany to a guy with a big fighting force behind him. Eagle eyed observers will note that this is exact same setup Dany herself had in AGOT when her Dragon Dreams started.
In both the earliest and latest books in the series, GRRM draws immediate parallels between Tyrion’s dragon dreams and Targaryen Dragon Dreams. Just from an economy of storytelling perspective, it would be weird to have Tyrion’s special important dreams-w/dragons-in-them that just happen to be totally unrelated to Jon & Dany’s Special Important Magic Dragon Dreams™️.
Caveat: Schrodinger’s Targaryen
Despite all of this, I do not think GRRM’s endgame is as simple as “And then we learn Tyrion is 100% definitely Aerys’ son and not Tywin’s.” My strongest hunch is that the plan is for the story to end without a definitive answer, but a pointedly open question. Compare it to other “unresolved Targaryen/dragonrider ancestry mysteries” like Nettles and Daeron T vs Daemon B. GRRM loves this “the mystery is more valuable than the answer” approach to storytelling.
In AGOT and ASOS we’re told “Tywin thinks of Tyrion as not his.” In TWOIAF we see maesters publicly speculating about Aerys & Joanna’s relations. I think the in-universe uncertainty is the plotline here. The speculation already exists in Tyrion’s plot, which will come to a fever pitch when (not if) he saddles Viserion.
I don’t think there’ll be any raunchy Bran-vision or tearstained secret letter from Joanna that definitively confirms Tyrion’s parentage one way or the other. Tyrion seizes Casterly Rock and there’s a hubbub about legality. Is he a golden trueborn lion, Tywin’s legal heir? Is he the red of a Targaryen dragon and/or a color-inverted Lannister bastard? Who the hell knows? What does it matter? All the truth Tyrion knows is his mother was a lioness, making him a cat regardless of coat. That, plus he has a dragon, with sharp long claws. The dragon reins are all he needs to reign from Castam Casterly Rock.
This deliberate open-endedness leaves room for a lot of options. I’m very open to chimera theory. Nerd Tangent: In myth, the chimera is literally a fire-breathing lion-serpent hybrid. All Tyrion needs is some goat imagery and he’s got the whole animal. Plus GRRM keeps making the lady of Casterly Rock mother twins at every point in the timeline. Joanna’s were even fraternal. GRRM even wrote an unpublished conversation whereTyrion talks about Maelys the Monstrous (to whom Tyrion repeatedly compares himself) absorbing his twin in-utero, and imagines the same thing happening in his own mother’s womb. George is doing everything a writer setting up a “genetic chimera” twist reveal would do.
Separately, I really like the idea of Tywin misinterpreting prophecy and dooming himself to the fate he was trying to avoid. In perfect parallel to Cersei’s experience with Maggy. Tywin gets some kind of cryptic warning about Aerys’ bloodline displacing his own. Just like Cersei’s valonqar, he jumps to a misplaced suspicion of Tyrion, when he should be examining Jaime and/or Cersei. When TWOIAF bundles the tourney of 272, Tyrion’s birth/Joanna’s death in 273, and Tywin’s role in the Targaryen downfall together, it’s entirely possible that the point is the same as AFFC Cersei constantly telling us “valonqar = Tyrion.” A red herring; there to prompt the audience into thinking about the question. But preserving mystery by laying the false answer on thick while the true answer is surreptitiously sprinkled in.
Maybe there’s even in-universe discussion about how an AJT reveal makes a farce of RLJ? “Diluting the reveal by flooding the spot with something similar but even more outlandish” was Tyrion’s own in-universe strategy for dealing with the reveal of Cersei’s royal bastards. This could be GRRM going full circle. “Oh, Ned Stark’s other closely guarded secret about royal bastardy just came out? Well, this counterstory from Tyrion about royal bastards has juicy stuff like clowns and sex with a crazy guy and kids w/physical abnormalities. Once this story spreads, no one’ll know what to believe!”
It could even go the same direction the show went for Theon’s identity dualism. Tangent: (Theon is kinda directly connected to Tyrion already, having inherited the “burn Winterfell, torn between Starks & birth family” plotline originally meant for Tyrion.) You can be both a furry apex predator on 4 legs and a mythical beast with long wriggly appendages. Lizard & lion at once.
GRRM might even be highlighting this Schrodinger-esque superstate of “both one and the other simultaneously” with Tyrion’s ADWD intro. The first time we see the cat-man after he kills Tywin, he’s drunk himself half to death in a box while on his way to Illyrio. It's the moment when he’s most in limbo– after killing the lion Tywin, but before joining sides with Aerys’ dragonspawn – he’s a half-alive half-dead cat in a box.
All I'm saying is that I think, for George, the point is the duality. The uncertainty. The multiplicity of options. Tbh, I’m not arguing that “Aerys is the father” = The Answer™️. I’m just arguing that the story is designed to set up the question.
From Tyrion’s first lines to Tywin’s last, GRRM insistently raises the notion of Tyrion not being Tywin’s son. The most recently published account of A, J, T, & T deals heavily with the contentious love triangle. I’m not saying you have to like it. I’m just saying you can’t pretend it’s not there.

2024.05.19 03:58 WasdCritics Open Roads

Open Roads
Open Rodas, the first title from Open Roads Team, the game developer that was created for this project. This company was joined by Fullbright, an American game developer based in Portland, responsible for two notable titles such as Gone Home and Tacoma, major international successes in the indie games industry.
The game is a mystery thriller that involves unraveling the past of Tess and Opal's family. Through Walking Simulator, you can control Tess through the different scenarios presented. In each scenario, you have to investigate the objects in order to find the different letters, tickets and postcards that tell the story of the family's life, specifically that of Tess's grandmother and Opal's mother, Helen. The tickets found pace the story so that just the right amount of information is released, and from there a discussion begins between Tess and her mother, Opal. The conversation between the two is the basis of the entire structure of the work. At times, these conversations require a decision on Tess's part, so the player must decide what and how to speak at crucial moments, be it something softer, harsher or indifferent. Tess's personality is left up to the player.
As for the story, it is handled gracefully by the developers, with no jumps, which makes the game very solid, something characteristic of the visual novels it is clearly inspired by. The main story consists of investigating the past of Helen, the protagonist's grandmother, because after her death and the foreclosure of the house, the mother and daughter find themselves packing up their belongings for the inevitable move. In order to find an old notebook for Opal's sister, Tess goes up to the attic and discovers a hidden compartment that holds secrets from the old widow's past and a supposed love that didn't end well. To find out the truth, mother and daughter embark on a journey that takes them to the family's old summer house and then to Canada. This range of mysteries is delivered at a steady pace and surprises at its climax with a somewhat unexpected plot. Concurrent with the main story are the secondary issues that are exposed, these directly involving Tess and Opal, issues that include the separation of Tess's parents, Opal's financial difficulties and Aunt August's strange relationship with the family.
https://preview.redd.it/3n1f9cubia1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=a99ddcc12ede7ac7ec01d5a86de9ccaf1832afc3
When it comes to building the characters, both the secondary themes and the setting take center stage. The secondary themes work on Tess and Opal's different family relationships, they work on different fronts. The first front begins with Tess's argument with her mother and the messages exchanged with her father, which reveal the real reason for their separation, and which are later put to rest. The second front is related to the family's financial situation, which has been exposed since the beginning of the book, after all Opal didn't have the money to pay the mortgage and avoid the confiscation of the house, later the problem is developed with the revelation of Opal and her ex-husband's work, and the crazy financial things they both did, another point that makes this situation of financial difficulty clear is Tess working from a very young age to try to depend as little as possible on her parents. The last front involves Aunt August, where the play exposes the difficult relationship between her and her sister Opal and their mother, Helen, who, through not paying the mortgage on the house and not being there for her during the most difficult moments of Helen's illness, showed an emotional distance from the rest of the family. All three of these secondary stories help to build up the characters, since the problems they face need to be resolved in some way, even if not definitively, so their journey to uncover the family's past is also essential to repairing the present problems that surround them.
The elements of the map play a fundamental role in the work, as they are the ignition point for the story that is developed through the dialogues. The messages and objects reveal secrets and bring the past to light, both of which are essential to the development of the story, be it the main story or the secondary ones. Through the objects it is possible to discover that Helen was a writer for the local newspaper, where she went by the pseudonym Miley and offered love advice to readers. It is also possible to discover the past of Leo, Hellen's husband and father of August and Opal, who after serving in the war worked as a building inspector until his death. The use of objects to tell the story goes beyond messages, postcards and notes, making it essential to understand the family's past.
The game is short, if the player explores the settings enough it can last up to 4 hours, but it is usually shorter than that. The end of the main story is concluded with the plot revealed and the past unraveled, a period is given to this part. As for the secondary stories, which are of fundamental importance in the work, they are partially concluded, and it's fair to say that there's a period in several of them. The problems are alleviated but not solved, since many of them depend on other people and not just on the mother and daughter. However, the relationship between the two is strengthened and various grievances are put aside, and the final idea that is conveyed is “everything will work out”. It's probably at this point that the title Open Roads is conceived, the paths have been opened between the two with the problems between them resolved, now there's room for the rest to be carefully resolved by both.
Aesthetically the work is incredible, the scenery features cartoonish 3D, and the characters are animated by hand with each frame being drawn separately. The work is incredible on the characters and because of this they bring a lightness to the work that deals with such serious subjects, it's an interesting contrast to use.
In conclusion, Open Roads blends a mystery thriller, walking simulator and visual novel. The mixture makes for a concise work with incredible narrative and plot direction, the cadence of events, the competition between situations, everything happening at the right time in the right proportion, the work is magnificent. In addition, the story of an intriguing past with an unexpected plot twist, together with the current problems faced, create an ideal dichotomy to explore the two characters and their relationship. The icing on the cake is the artwork, which has a unique, rustic and labor-intensive character that almost single-handedly draws players in to experience the rest. Open Roads demonstrates that a good story, with good artwork and decent gameplay can make a short work into something striking, profound and beautiful.

2024.05.19 02:24 LibraryGullible4679 Sibling is facing foreclosure, frustrating circumstances... how should I help?

Throwaway account. Genuinely, this is my sibling's situation, not mine. Much of the 'story' of this is what the sibling related to me. Sibling has had financial issues in the past. This may belong in FinancialAdvice, but I sense things may beyond money fixing...
Sibling is in Alabama, I am in Georgia.
Sibling is self employed in a profession that involves taking many direct payments, and uses Square to accept those payments. Sibling purchased a home in August of last year. They claim that they [attempted] to use Square to make the mortgage payments, however apparently the mortgage company never actually accepted them. Sibling and their spouse apparently ignored many letters before realizing the situation and were months past due. Between them and the mortgage company, it was finally realized the failure to make/accept via Square, so Sibling began the process of getting the money back from Square and succeeded.
Sibling apparently also banks with a non-mainstream online-only bank, so then getting the funds from Square to that bank was a process. The mortgage company apparently told Sibling that they HAD to overnight a cashiers at the time she was finally in possession of the funds. They get online bank to increase withdrawal/ATM limits, and over the course of several days they get the cash in hand... at this point I'm just going to round the amount to 15 thousand dollars.
Sibling takes cash to local, mainstream brick-and-mortar bank they have a car note with and get a cashiers check, takes that to FedEx, and send check and paperwork as instructed.
It takes two weeks for the mortgage company to come back and say "Got your FedEx envelop - and the paperwork - but no check." Commence cashiers check cancellation process... money is locked up for 90 days according to brick-and-mortar bank.
1-2 weeks later, the foreclosure notice is in the newspaper and they're getting notice of foreclosure. (Don't ask me what notices they've gotten or ignored, I'm aware these things don't happen overnight.) I would have thought all this is was a scam if I didn't find the notice in the newspaper myself.
Courthouse steps sale is in 10 days.
I am liquid enough to help my sibling - I've known about the situation for 48 hours at this point. After the initial story from my sibling, my spouse and I slept on the situation and decided that if there was something we could do, we should do it...
I asked sibling "If a wire or ACH could happen today, would it solve this problem." They waited until the end of the day to call/text me back (they were working, maybe I didn't imply strongly enough that I was willing to make a payment). That was Friday. Little/no contact since then from sibling.
So, I have two areas of questions:
  1. What do you think the options for my siblings actually are at this point? The mortgage company has referred the whole thing to Brock and Scott for the foreclosure, and with them involved, it's not clear to me whether a payment is possible at this point, who it would be to, a deadline, etc... (Not that I'm trying to get directly involved). Apparently bankruptcy is an option to stop foreclosure? If the story is true, perhaps they could even exit bankruptcy before it's complete?
  2. If I do help my sibling, are there logical safeguards I should put in place? Some form of written agreement? Do you have recommendations on how to go about this? I want to verify the status of the cashiers check cancellation and that that money IS coming back, and if possible or logical draw up an actual contract with my sibling about this (if that's a logical thing to do?)
I greatly appreciate any input you may have. (including if it is just a statement of direct advice to my sibling of 'Go get an attorney.')
I have redacted some known details or minutiae for the sake of length of this post. Happy to fill in any gaps I have knowledge of.

2024.05.19 01:15 Gazooonga Diary of a Press-Ganged Saurian (#1/?)

Just another fun little story idea I had. I am still working on Humans are the violent ones but I like to bounce around and experiment with ideas to see what I really like. I also suck at writing more casual stories, as they give me severe writer's block as I try to map out how to make a scene feel genuine in my head, but I promise I'll update that soon. If you like this story and want to see more, then like and comment. I'll gladly continue this series as well.
Start of Personal Log
Humans don't like being told what to do. They don't like being commanded, put in their place, or snubbed. It was an inexorable, inalienable trait of humans, at least any noteable humans, to go against any authority that they believed was against their interests.
Humanity would not fit amongst the stars. Few ever did. It was a trait of most successful species to be willful, ambitious, and to desire more. But once they reached the stars the new (and simultaneously very old) pecking order either quashed any spirit such species had or simply eradicated them. Countless tomb worlds and diaspora served as painful reminders of what became of the nails that chose to stick out. The hammer of order would always strike. There could be no compromise, the very soul of the authority that held the Jurisdiction together relied on a show of unmatched power, or at least the illusion of item.
In reality, the Jurisdiction was an old, fat, and lazy beast. It filled its belly on the corpses of empires far and wide, and sated its bloodlust on the shattered dreams of hopeful cubs. It had every right to, for none could challenge it: there were no new frontiers to explore, nor were there any other enemies to conquer. The Milky Way, as humans had so strangely dubbed our cradle galaxy, as well as Andromeda, had long since been warred over and settled for millennia before humanity had arrived, bright-eyed and with familiar yet otherwise foolish dreams of cooperation and prosperity. The Jurisdiction did not cooperate, nor did it ensure prosperity. Oh, it claimed it did, but in reality it simply took. The rest was just the peace that came with not being the direct target of the biggest fish in the pond. The humans didn't like that, but they had no choice.
Slavery was a common tribute. The Jurisdiction had no use for other resources: it simply took. No, it wanted those who could facilitate that unequal exchange, those raised in a world where the only morality was the one set by your lord. The Jurisdiction was held together by expectations, obligations, and dury more than any kind of shared dream, so when you were ordered to take you did so without question. Humanity was new: they had no niche or value that set them apart, but they had a penchant for killing and taking, so the Jurisdiction gave them a taste of how the galaxy worked. They killed and they took. The humans didn't like that, but what choice did they have?
Humans were strange. They learned, but not in the way most species learned. Most species learned to adapt in a passive way, to adhere to the world around them. They flowed like water, moving past and around obstacles and confirming to the boxes they were assigned too. Humans didn't confirm, nor did they adapt: they made their circumstances fit their desires. They would not move around obstacles, but rather smash through them, and they refused to stay in one box for too long. The Jurisdiction merely saw them as a particularly loud nuisance, but those who faced their wrath knew better.
It is said that when a beast seeks to make an example, it shall humble its rival by killing it's cubs. Children were one of those universal constants that brought entire communities together: the Sok’klar saw their hatchlings as gifts, shaped by the fruitful currents of the universe in perfect harmony. The Yarrack saw each and every newborn whelp as an uncut gemstone, ready to be shaped into something magical. Humanity oftentimes referred to their offspring as angels, or spirits of unbridled good sent by the gods themselves. Children were seen by most of the galaxy as gifts.
The Jurisdiction saw them as a lever to inflict suffering. It had become quite effective at enacting psychological punishments on those that stood up and spoke out. You dare to disobey? You believe you can speak out? Your gifts shall be taken from you, and you shall be without joy.
Humans didn't like this, but the Jurisdiction would have their pound of flesh, and humankind would kneel. And they did. But humans were patient creatures: most species who retained that trait of willful spit also lacked patience.
I had long since become desensitized to the Jurisdiction’s actions: it was simply how the universe worked now, as if it were a constant akin to gravity. Cruelty was the unspoken rule of this seemingly unending age, where our lives never appeared to move forward or backwards, only lay dormant. The Jurisdiction had been the unyielding authority that ruled the galaxy for thousands of years, venerable yet feared all the same.
And for the longest time I was just another cog in its wheel. My name is Kalnuracht Sedjuur-Noumar VII, and was the scion of the noble house Sedjuur-Noumar. I was born into what most would describe as veiled apathy, living a life that could be attributed to the privileged class of feared scribes that enacted the will of those above. I was an administrator and nothing more. And now I am doomed to be far less than that in the eyes of my former constituents within the endless administration. I am the only scion, as is tradition, and without an heir I am the last of my house, our name to be scrubbed from the records, worthless, meaningless, and forgotten.
I am merely Kalnuracht, nothing else and nothing more. I have seen from their eyes, the eyes of the downtrodden, and it makes my crimes of association with the Jurisdiction feel all the more damning on my worthless soul. I am worthless to the world, and this is my story.
End Personal Log #1
Start of Neural Lace Narrative Log #1
They came from the black like carrion birds in the night, encircling our convoy as if it were a dying animal ready to be picked clean without remorse. There was no warning, no list of demands sent out as civilized peoples did, nor was there either any requirement for unconditional surrender nor chance to parlay, as was done so under letter of marque: this was an unmistakable call for violence and nothing else. They sought to reduce us to slag and scavenge the rest.
So, as one would expect, the entire bridge of the ship was nearing a panicked state. This was not the actions of those practicing civility, but rather the common behaviors of despoiling barbarians, the kind that tore their way through the dark reaches of the galaxy as if they owned it.
“Wayfinder, what do your probes see?” Shouted the ship’s sovereign. He was an older Kar’Rowmach, an amphibious cephalopod species with a venerable history within the Jurisdiction going back thousands of years. Normally one such as him would be above me if it weren't for the fact that I was under the authority of the Jurisdiction’s seal of office. He didn't like me very much, but most of his kind shared the same sentiment.
“All dark, honorable Sovereign: the sensor arrays are wailing but the feedback we're reviewing is beyond incomprehensible,” the wayfinder replied with a certain restrained temper in his voice. The Sok'klar wayfinder swayed gently, his tentacled limbs grasping different metallo-liquid braille output arrays, the liquid gallium flexing and reshaping unnaturally to allow him to to take in multiple different sources of sensory output at once, with the primary navigation computer plugged into the cybernetics surrounding his opaque, gelatinous head and plugging directly into his tube-shaped brain.
The Sovereign cursed in Loskat and pointed to his bridge crew while I simply sat in the back, near the Sovereign’s symbolic throne. “Prepare countermeasures and spool up the warp drive, we cannot allow the amanuensis to be taken! He carries sensitive information that only he can translate and transcribe!”
As the bridge crew nodded and began fiddling with their own systems, I preened my feathered hide anxiously. I wasn't a fighter: us nobles of the cloth were the educated minority above all else, not those who waged war or partook in hard labor. Special cybernetics in my brain allowed me to translate triple-encoded messages that usually took a ducal signet codekey or above to parse, but even without that I was a skilled mathematician and logician. I had terabytes worth of knowledge stored within the hardware installed in my head, all well protected of course, but if I were to die it would still be a waste. I could only imagine the damage any malcontenders could do with it if they were able to get their filthy hands on me.
Suddenly, the ship rocked, and the gallium overhead display began to form crescendos like I'd never seen before. “Sovereign, decks A-3 through C-12 are venting atmosphere and our coolant systems have been obliterated,” the Wayfinder spoke in an almost serene voice, as if he was completely unconcerned by current events. I knew they were simply incapable of tonal displays, but it was unnerving nonetheless. “Once we jump, we will not be able to risk another until the vacuum of the void can reduce temperatures to acceptable levels within the plasma capacitors.”
“Damn them,” the armored nautiloid hissed, his barbed feelers coiling in frustration, “May the currents take them. What are our options? what can we see? This fleet cannot fall to the void today, not with such vital cargo.” My hackles rose lightly at the Kar’Rowmach referred to me as some object rather than an esteemed amanuensis of the Jurisdiction, but I bit my forked tongue. Now was not the time to squabble with the sovereign over who was what and what titles I deserved, not while he was so desperately attempting to keep what semblance of order within his fleet that he had left.
I could not blame the crew for being panicked either: wars were practically mythologized now, having been long since rendered obsolete with the rise of the Jurisdiction, and that felt like an eternity ago. Now, either being levied into or joining a ducal naval force was simply another career, more akin to serving as an officer of the law rather than a fully fledged soldier. Minimal training was required, most of it being the technicals of one's duty rather than any kind of combat conditioning, so expecting a fleet to actually be prepared for a combat scenario in a universe where peace was the norm was laughable.
“We are practically blind, Sovereign,” stated the Sok'klar Wayfinder, “our probes are offline, and shipboard graviton displacement sensory arrays have been rendered unreliable at best.”
“What about the particle emission array? Has there been a spike in radioactivity where we were hit?”
The Wayfinder seemed to think for a second, his gelatinous form flexing and morphing a bit before answering. “Affirmative, a jump from negligible to forty billion becquerels along decks A through E-5 on our starboard side.”
“Torpedoes…” the Sovereign hissed, stroking his barbed feelers, “Human Torpedoes. Only those primitives would rely on crude nuclear warheads.” He then turned to his militant leaders on the ship. “Noddos, Rel’ads: organize your phalanxes and prepare to repel boarders. We are bound to be assailed by those rancorous primates, and I want their skulls piled at my feet if they dare set foot on our ship.”
“Your wish is our command, Sovereign,” the two militant commanders spoke as one. Noddos, a large bipedal with multiple sets of curved spines running down his back, a pair of graceful horns sprouting from his head, and multiple rows of sharp teeth in his snout, bowed first, followed by Rel’ads, a marsupial with long saberteeth and thick fur. They both must have been fierce warriors in their own right to each lead a phalanx. They wore thick, semi-powered armor and held dueling polearms alongside their usual plasma casters, and seemed completely unfazed by the situation we were in. As they stomped out of the brightly lit bridge, I let out a quiet squawk of discontentment. “Sovereign, why haven't we jumped again? We are wasting precious time.”
“I am working on it, you spineless beaurocrat!” He warbled back, his feelers tensing in anger, “besides, it's not as if you're the one who will be spilling blood today, amanuensis, so flatten your wretched beak or I shall weld it shut with a plasma torch.
I was about to reply with something indignant, but the ship rocked again, this time causing the lights to flicker and the air to become… thick. The skin under my feathers began to blister, and I became lightheaded and confused. “Seal the damnable vents, initiate radiation scrubbers, and activate secondary life support!” Shouted the Sovereign, “Their nuclear weapons are rendering the ship inhospitable!”
I coughed up magenta blood accidentally, and I could feel more seeping from under my eyes. Some of the crew was in a similar position, but others were more resistant to radiation than I. The Sok'klar seemed completely at ease as he ran his tentacles across his morphic braille arrays before calmly announcing the ship’s status. “I've regained some control over our probes: ten, twelve, and seventeen are active and fully functional, the rest are either still malfunctioning or permanently inoperable. A rapid rise in localized radiation is also interfering with the detection of graviton displacement; we can't sense photon redirection, thus readings will remain inconclusive.
“Wayfinder, damn you, get me some kind of out here! We're easy prey until we can respond in kind!”
“Negative, something has gone awry with our processing hub, I am attempting to troubleshoot-”
And with that, the Wayfinder’s bulbous head exploded in a cascade of opaque lavender blood, covering the front half of the deck crew like a morbid art piece. Some of the crew screamed and shouted in terror before removing their cranial adaptors and choosing to interact with their displays manually. Others died just as quickly, unable to unplug in time as their brain stems fried or their blood boiled. It was a horrible way to go, having your insides neutralized by your own cybernetics, so I was glad I wasn't connected to the system.
“Cybernetic warfare! All systems are to be considered compromised, switch to manual settings or you'll be killed!”
The lights in the bridge flickered again, and the displays went haywire. The bridge crew, which obviously weren't acquainted with working without being hard-linked into the mainframe, moved at a much slower pace.
“Launch missile pods A through F and set to self-target after five hundred kilometers, then rely on their ballistic coordinates to begin firing broadsides! If we can't see the humans due to their meddling, we'll just have to feel them.” Shouted the Sovereign, “and got me a detailed report on the ship’s diagnostics readings. I need to know if this flagship is still capable of escaping or if we'll have to scuttle it and retreat on another.”
“Acknowledged, Sovereign, launching now,” affirmed another deck officer as he swiped across his own gallium output array. I could hear the dull thunk, thunk, thunk of missiles pushing out of their pods before racing off to their intended targets, then the mechanical whirring as the pods rotated to be reloaded by slaves in the lower decks. I was regaining my bearings as the many horrible sensations of being overwhelmed by radiation poisoning were beginning to subside, but I still felt as if I had been microwaved. The air was stale, the crew was horribly sick as well, and even the sovereign himself seemed to be on his last leg. I was beginning to believe that I might die here.
“Sovereign, a message from the lower decks,” shouted a communications officer, his chitin scraping against itself as he turned quickly, “they're requesting reinforcements, something about being overrun.”
“Impossible,” the Sovereign hissed out in a vain attempt to exude confidence, “We must outnumber the humans, they always go for bigger targets out of arrogance.”
“I've received reports that it's not just humans: the primates seem to make up only a third or so of the assailing force, along with some Phaeldaer and Vrex.”
The commander slammed his clawed hands down on his own output array in a fit of rage, obviously overwhelmed by the circumstances, “Then this wasn't just a typical assault, but something more sinister!” The nautiloid warbled, blood seeping from his shell as the full effects of the radiation took hold, “Get Rel’ads on the line, have him divert all spare lances to the lower decks or else we'll lose the only offensive capabilities we can use.”
“Rel'ads has gone dark, Sovereign, his vitals are critical.”
“Then either get me Rel'ads tail-leader or get me Noddos!” He screamed in rage, “don't give me this nonsense! If we don't pick it up we're all going to die, is that what you want?”
“No, Sovereign, I'm simply overwhelmed-”
“We're all overwhelmed! By the tides, I'm dying of radiation poisoning you nincompoop! Get me something I can work with!”
The officer didn't even acknowledge the Sovereign after that, simply turning back to his display. Eventually, the Sovereign was able to get Noddos on the line.
“Sovereign, two thirds of my phalanxes have been decimated by combat with the primitives and the radiation, the rest are in shambles. We must retreat and fortify elsewhere!”
“Then the ship is compromised! Rel'ads is unresponsive and the lower decks are swarming with intruders. We must evacuate the amanuensis to another ship.”
Just as the Sovereign spoke, I heard several gentle thumps rattle against the bridge’s door, and it made me uneasy. Some of the bridge crew seemed to feel the same, as they looked incredibly nervous and some even drew their sidearms. Just as the sovereign turned to give further orders, the door blew inward with a deafening explosion, followed by shouting and gunfire. Several of the bridge officers were dispatched quickly, brain matter and blood splattering against the delicate electronics. Others were shot in the legs, the torso, or in any other exotic yet non-vital body parts. The humans poured in, brandishing primitive ballistic firearms and jury-rigged energy weapons while wearing scavenged, legion-grade powered armor.
The Sovereign was the next to go, but he wasn't afforded an honorable death. He was shot along the arm with a particularly potent plasma caster, burning off his clawed hand and cauterizing the wound, the acrid smell of roasting chitin filling the already hot and cramped bridge. He fell back against his output array, the gallium reaching new highs and lows as more diagnostics and casualty reports were delivered, and he clutched his stump angrily. “I'll burn every last one of you in the foundries! I'll tie you to stakes, cover you in wax and set you alight! Your screams will be broadcasted all over the galaxy!”
One human warrior stomped up and slammed the butt of his rifle into the sovereign’s face, shattering his facial plates and causing blue blood to splatter across his section of the bridge. “Shut the fuck up, you mutant lobster,” the human said before dragging him by both antennae towards the center of the bridge and receiving a stained breeching axe from one of his comrades. “Emmanuel, start recording. We need proof.”
The other human nodded and pressed a button on his armor before lifting up his gun again. The rest of the humans fanned out, holding everyone else at gunpoint. I tried to get up and sneak out, but a human grabbed me by my neck and nearly wrung it out as he forced me to my knees and pointed a sidearm to my skull. “Get down, you piece of shit, before I blow your brains out too.”
“Damnable primate,” I hissed, but he bashed me in my skull with the base of his sidearm’s grip and sent me sprawling, making my already pounding headache worse. Another human shouted at him in a language I didn't recognize, but he sounded furious. The first brought me back up to my knees again, and I complies with a hiss and a groan, blood still leaking from my eyes and mouth and my world was spinning.
The Sovereign struggled, but he was weak from the radiation poisoning and he couldn't exactly resist on account of his lost arm. The human with the breaching ax kicked the Sovereign down and forced him to kneel before lifting up the breeching ax and splitting his chitinous head down the middle with one powerful swing, sending more blood and brains across the floor. “Execution confirmed, take his antennae just in case and we've got ourselves a bounty. Now all we need is that ugly cat’s teeth and the fat hedgehog-thing’s grimy spines and we'll be in business. Although, they do have skulls… we might as well just take their heads.”
The real horror of the situation dawned on me at that moment: they were going to kill us all, or maybe worse. They mentioned a bounty for the commanders, and multiple of the higher ranking ship officers were already dead, their brains splattered against the walls or their bodies torn apart by gunfire. I wasn't dead yet, but that didn't mean much since I wasn't an immediate threat.
“Alright, round them up and bring all the grunts to the hanger bay, then kill the rest,” the leader of the humans said in such a lackadaisical manner that his complete disregard for life almost made me sick… almost. I had seen worse from the Jurisdiction before, but usually that was from me delivering some kind of ordered judgment on a world that had sinned against order. I might have simply been the messenger, but I had seen many of the outcomes. “And make sure to collect whatever proof of bounties you can, we'll need to deliver them to the office to get cashed out. Don't let this be a repeat of last time where Juarez fucking forgot to take a few heads and it ended up cutting our profits in half, the fucking retard.”
Some of the humans chuckled at that as they dragged more of the senior officers away, out of the room and into the hall, where I heard gunshots. The rest of the bridge crew froze in place, different fear instincts kicking in. The remaining Sok'klar corralled together into what seemed to be a singular, semi-congealed mass as if to try and trick the humans into believing that they were much bigger and much more threatening than they actually were. The one Thei’chi on the bridge, an ensign who had clearly thought this would be a simple mission, bore her curved fangs at the humans and growled as they approached, her hackles completely vertical and her eyes dilated. They quickly muzzled and bound her before beating her over the head with a gun stock, sending her sprawling onto the ground. Many others simply cooperated, eyes wide and yet simultaneously empty, as if they couldn't quite process that the ship had been taken and the commanding officers were being executed as the rest were escorted to the hangar.
“Get the damn messenger down to the hanger as well, we need whatever data's in his ugly lizard head, then we can decide on what to do with him.”
I spat at him in spite, as if to try and seem brave, but it was clearly an empty gesture. “You won't get anything, primate! You couldn't possibly crack the encryption!”
The human holding me seemed to wind up for another swing, but the commanding officer simply held up his hand to stop my tormentor before strolling over to me. He knelt down and removed his helmet, revealing a beige-colored face covered in scars, wiry black hair cut down to the scalp, and multiple tattoos. “You're really fucking mouthy for a hostage,” he said before punching me across my beak faster than I could register. I heard a sharp crack as his fist connected, and my head spun again as the metallic taste of blood pooled into my mouth. “I'd advise you to shut up, but I'm sure you won't listen: you aristocratic types are so full of yourselves. Maybe I should have you flogged in the public square until your vocal chords give out once we rip those cybernetics from your head, huh? How's that sound?”
“It won't matter… it won't change anything… the Jurisdiction will hunt you down.”
“Maybe, but I doubt it will happen for some time: they really suck at doing anything that requires effort, even when they're mad enough. They just keep sending their rabid lapdogs to try and smoke us out, and they always end up full of holes,” the human officer said with a smirk, his yellowish-white teeth and green eyes sending shivers down my spine as he drew his knife. “They're just horrible at their job, you know? You've all gotten so lazy and incompetent after being able to just take what you want without resistance, and now that you've met people who are angry and crazy enough to fight back you act as if we're committing some grave injustice,” he placed the knife against my throat, the flat just underneath my now bent beak, “No, we just took a few pages out of your book, ‘cept we've got standards. No kids, for one…” he seemed to look off into the distance as his sneer deepened, “but it's more than that, we don't attack the defenseless in general and we still win against you all in fair fights.”
I went to say something else snarky, but he quickly grabbed my thin tongue with his fingers and yanked it out, blood from my mouth pulling to the floor as he held the blade of his knife against it. “No no, none of that. Say one more thing and I'll cut that rancid little tongue of yours out of your mouth and feed it to you,” he hissed at me, pressing the blade down just hard enough to draw blood. “Do you know what it's like to see a planet turn into a tomb?" he asked me, gritting his teeth, “Do you know what it's like to see everything you've ever known crumble to ash and glass, all the life and the green stripped away leaving nothing but bones? I do. I've seen it happen to countless worlds, and my grandfather always told me stories of how you bastards did it to Earth. He still prays in its direction five times a day, to Mecca, but he knows the Kaaba is gone now, or maybe it's still there, buried in the bones of those who sought refuge there.”
I didn't care for the human’s nonsensical beliefs, but I did care to correct him. “I've seen it before, and I'll see it again. And so will you, it's inevitable. The Jurisdiction will always have its judgment fulfilled, there is no alternative.”
“One day, I hope we can rectify that,” he said, then he sheathed his knife and slammed my head against the metal floor with enough force to nearly knock me out. As I lost consciousness, I could hear him speak. “Take him to the Chop Doc, and make sure the cybernetics don't get damaged: they're supposedly more valuable than any bounty on this ship.”
Warning: Severe radiation poisoning detected. Flush system immediately.
Warning: Neural Lace removal detected, chance of neurological damage high. Proceeded with caution.

2024.05.18 23:51 crowned_tragedy Basics for PreK

I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. We have been jumping into homeschooling these last number of months to get a feel for things. My 2 year old just tags along for the most part, she already knows how to sing her ABCs and recognize quite a few letters too. She can count up to 12. She knows basic shapes, animal noises etc. She seems spot on in learning development imo. My 4 year old can write some letters, recognize a few more letters than my 2 year old, if She focuses really hard, she can write her name (I only really have her write it when she absolutely insists on being the one to write it). She can almost count to 20 on her own, recognize some numbers, and draw simple shapes. We do a bunch of hands on learning activities, we do a ton of free play time, and some age friendly boardgames. I do a little paper work with them. They are both amazing at tracing lines and love doing it. I'm trying to write down educational goals for the 24/25 school year. I'm just not sure what those goals should be? Especially for my 4 year old. What sorts of things should a 4 (will be 5 mid school year) year old understand by the end of the school year?

2024.05.18 23:07 pvnkteenvampirequeen 23F (USA) — searching for kindred spirits

Hello all! I am a moonlight hospital worker and student seeking friends whose letters may keep me company! I recently moved to the city - I’ve had zero luck striking up meaningful conversations with passersby. I yearn for a connection with someone that isn’t a singular superficial remark about the weather. Being in the hospital it’s really hard to have any conversation at all, everyone is so busy. I know there must be someone pining for someone to know they are out there too. Let’s talk about the human condition, our dreams, our what-ifs, our introspective thoughts, morals and values. Let’s talk about our passions, let’s exchange photos, recipes, stories. Let’s read a story together and exchange our thoughts and feelings! I find it so exciting to find a stranger and have the chance to know them! How lucky are we as two grains of sand in the proverbial ocean to share this moment together?
Some interesting bits about me! I grew up on a cattle farm in the mountains. I like DND (though I’ve yet to actually play), studio ghibli and other anime, video games, and fantasy anything! I’m legally a vampire. I love drawing, writing short stories and poetry. (My poetry won a state award not to toot my own horn but tootoot). I’m a foodie and love to cook though I am not good at it… yet. I am a dog mom to two feral furnados. I love to make crafts, I LOVE music- anything from Pierce the Veil to Chopin, from Jo Stafford to Miki Matsubara! I was a choral student who ranked into the All Northwest Choir (a choir consisting of the top students from about 7 states) in Sophomore year! (Tootoot again!) I love hiking and collecting flower pressings! I have a great collection so far! I also have a massive pin collection too. I have actually seen very few movies, and would love to watch a film and exchange our views! I am a big history fan, any history at all! I love learning about empires lost to time, the dawn of civilization, and the creation of our universe. I’m learning Japanese and have a trip to Osaka planned next year. I love horseback riding, im an avid gardener. I am a bit of a goth, and everything I own is black, red or purple. I have never had a penpal, but did exchange letters overseas with family for a while!
I look forward to hearing from anyone who shares interests (or not!) and is eager to start a new friendship. If you’re interested in being penpals, please feel free to reach out!

2024.05.18 21:37 Castruccio_Castracan 90 feminist groups and 130 women's shelters sign open letter demanding censorship of violence against men awareness campaign (Italy)

Last week in Naples, a few dozen advertising boards went up with an awareness campaign on violence against men:
https://www.liberoquotidiano.it/news/italia/39348663/napoli-violenza-uomini-cartelloni-mandano-tilt-sinistra.html
The main slogan was "Are you sure violence is always of the same sex?". They showed a graphic of a man curled up against a wall holding his face in his hands in desperation. They promoted the website 1523.it, which runs an emergency phone number 1523 for men who are victims of violence and stalking.
So far so good right? this is what feminists always said we should do, run our own campaigns with no reference to their own just trying to help men in need, right? yeah, no.
https://www.direcontrolaviolenza.it/la-violenza-maschile-alle-donne-e-un-fenomeno-strutturale-e-pervasivo-d-i-re-chiede-alla-ministra-roccella-di-intervenire-sul-caso-dei-manifesti-che-ne-sminuiscono-la-portata/
After a social media shitstorm that picked up as soon as photos of the boards started showing up on the internet, the country's most prominent and influential feminist orgs, which collectively recived hundreds of millions of euros in public funding for their activites, got together and wrote an open letter to the mayor of Naples and the Ministry for Equal Opportunity, denouncing the campaign and demanding it be censored (in Italy the mayor has leeway over public advertisements).
Their argument is that this campaign draws a "false equivalence", as "violence against men is not systemic, structural and pervasive" like violence against women. They argue the campaign si designed to attack women and feminists, and that it is in fact a hate campaign.
These aren't fringe groups or irrelevant social media users. These are senators, presidents of national associations, people with gigantic budgets, hundreds of employees, thousands of volunteers under them. They have money, connections, academic positions, political power. They are the mainstream of mainstream feminism and this is how they react to a campaign to help men who are victims of violence. Not even violence by women specifically, the number is totally open to men who are victimised by anyone.

2024.05.18 21:14 JoelSnape Is Baphomet an esoteric representation of Jesus Christ?

https://chipstero7.wordpress.com/2023/05/24/is-baphomet-an-esoteric-representation-of-jesus-christ/
Quote from my article that discusses this (20% of 100%):
Baphomet is a symbol that has generated intrigue and controversy throughout history. It’s associated with occultism, mystery traditions, and the Knights Templar. While its origins and meanings are subject to interpretation, some individuals have proposed intriguing parallels between Baphomet and Christ. A notable parallel lie in their association with duality. Baphomet’s depicted as androgynous in nature and represents the equilibration of opposites and the integration of masculine and feminine energies. Christ is likewise depicted (especially in paintings) as androgynous and in ancient text is sometimes described as a merging of the male and the female. Drawing from the insights of the 15th-century book ‘Book of the Holy Treaty’, historian Leah De Vun describes the text as saying that Christ and Mary were originally a unified entity — an alchemical hermaphrodite. Describing the text — De Vun characterizes Christ as the “ultimate hermaphrodite, a unity of contrary parts, the human and the divine, the male and the female”. This idea of Christ as a hermaphrodite finds support in the writings of early Christian theologian Hippolytus, who, like the Ophites, considered Christ to be of dual genders.1 Artistic representations of Christ, such as the painting “The Lamentation around the remains of Christ”, underscore this idea, showing Christ with female breasts akin to Baphomet. Some propose that the name “Jesus Christ” could represent the merging of two distinct entities or names into one. This idea is bolstered by the identification of “Jesus” as an ancient name for Isis, referred to as “Esus” in hieroglyphic inscriptions,2 and “Christ” as a name historically associated with Osiris (see the book ‘Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection’). Within this framework, Isis and Osiris serve as possible precursors for the Biblical figures Mary and Christ.
This union or merging of Mary and Christ into a hermaphrodite like Baphomet represent twin souls becoming one and the accomplishment of the Philosopher’s Stone. The Philosopher’s Stone represents the alchemical process of inner transformation, leading to the ultimate goal of Divine Union. Divine Union refers to a spiritual state of unity and connection with the divine or higher consciousness. In essence, it refers to the coming together of twin souls, similar to how Christ merges with Mary or how Osiris merges with Isis. According to Manly Palmer Hall, in his book ‘Initiates of the Flame’, the “marriage of the Sun and Moon” represents the accomplishment of the Philosopher’s Stone. For the ancient Egyptians, the Moon represented Isis and the Sun represented Osiris and their union created Horus who was the fusion of both his parents and a divine hermaphrodite. In his book ‘Gods Wear Spandex’, Chris Knowles says: “The Chemical Wedding referred to the work of the alchemists, who sought to marry the masculine and feminine properties of creation and produce the Royal Hermaphrodite, which some historians have linked to Harpocrates (Younger Horus)”. In the ancient mysteries, the ultimate aim of the philosophers was not to transform lead chemically into gold, but transform man and woman into the divine hermaphrodite, merging the opposites; the male and the female. This is ultimately what Baphomet represents. It represents the idea that true spiritual enlightenment and wholeness come from embracing and integrating both the masculine and feminine aspects of creation. This union of opposites is seen as a path to spiritual balance and ultimate transcendence. This integration of the male and female is also represented by Rebis, which is a 15th-century figure used to symbolize the Magnum Opus or Great Work.
The connections between Christ and Baphomet are not widely recognized or agreed upon, but esoteric interpretations have been proposed. For example, in his book ‘Baphomet of Éliphas Lévi’, Abraxas Aletheia argues that Baphomet is an esoteric symbol of Christ, saying: “Contrary to popular belief, Baphomet is an image of an esoteric Jesus Christ created from a composite of alchemical, Kabbalistic and Christian symbols”. One such connection symbolically between Baphomet and Christ can be found in Baphomet’s caducous which matches the Christogram which is a monogram or combination of letters that forms an abbreviation for Christ’s name. One of Baphomet’s most recognizable symbols is the pentagram emblazoned on its forehead. The pentagram is commonly associated with Christ. In Christian tradition, the pentagram is seen as a symbolic connection to the five wounds of Christ. In certain esoteric traditions, the pentagram has been linked to the planet Venus, called the Morning Star or the Evening Star, depending on its appearance in the sky. This is of relevance, because Christ describes himself as the bright Morning Star in the Book of Revelation (22:16). One of the earliest connections between Baphomet and Christ can be found in the mythology surrounding the Knights Templar, a medieval Christian military order. Some have suggested that the Baphomet head that the Knights Templars venerated was the head of Christ. In her book ‘The Templars: The Secret History Revealed’, Barbara Frale says: “The last point raised in the indictment against the Templars concerned the secret veneration of an idol in the shape of a bearded head. There is clear evidence of the existence of image of Christ in the religious life of the order, as well as a mysterious cult devoted to the Sacred Blood”. Frale’s essentially suggesting that the Baphomet head was that of Christ. This same idea was the subject of the book ‘The Head of God: The Lost Treasure of the Templars’, by Keith Laidler.

Monotheism. Part 2: Judaism
Part 1
Judaism: a Retreat from Biblical Monotheism
The history of the Jewish people is clearly divided into two periods: before and after the expiatory death of Jesus Christ. As the Sacrifice for the sins of the world had not yet been carried out, Old Testament history continued, the entire meaning of which consisted in waiting and preparation to meet the coming Savior. Messianic expectations were particularly pronounced during the last decades before the arrival of the Savior into the world. People not only in Jerusalem, but also in other cities and villages of Palestine, waited for the Messiah foretold in the Holy Scripture.
Christ and the Pharisees
Time was fulfilled. The Messiah came, but Jewish leaders, Pharisees, and Sadducees condemned him to death. But why were the Pharisees, Sadducees, and scribes offended? Why was it enough for the Samaritan woman to reveal the secret side of her life for her to gladly believe that the traveler standing beside her, weary from the road and asking her for water, was Christ (see John 4:42)? Why did the Pharisees and scribes, who were witnesses to the magnificent miracles performed by Jesus and knew the Scriptures better than anyone else, stubbornly refuse to recognize Christ? Finally, one more question: why did they hate Him, despite the fact that he delivered many people from terrible disease and suffering?
The answer must be sought in the peculiarities and character of the spiritual life of the leaders of Israel. Religious life demands of a person self-attentiveness, moral sensitivity, humility, and pure intentions. Without this, the heart gradually hardens. A change inevitably occurs, the consequences of which are spiritual death.
Already before the beginning of our Savior’s Gospel of the Heavenly Kingdom, the Jews had begun to imagine the Messiah as a powerful earthly king, who would exalt them above all nations and make them wealthy and powerful. This concept of the Messiah corresponded to their spiritual and moral condition.
For a proper understanding of the prophecy inspired by the Holy Spirit, not doctrinal erudition, but pure, uncorrupted faith was necessary.
The consciousness of lawyers and scribes, corrupted by sin, did not notice the parts of the Old Testament in which the spiritual qualities of the promised Messiah are given: "behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass" (Zech. 9:9); " Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth" (Isa. 42:1-3; cf.: Matt. 12:20).
Despite all the seemingly multifaceted events preceding the trial of the Savior of the world, there is only one reason for such a grave sin to have been committed—the people were rooted in sin and loved it. They seethed with anger at He who had come to the world to conquer and destroy sin.
After Christ the Messiah, who came to save the world, was slandered, profaned, and put to death, the spiritual death of the chosen people began. The Lord Jesus Christ spoke to the Hebrews directly, "He that hateth me hateth my Father also" (John 15:23). This means that the monotheism of the Hebrew leaders became entirely formalistic.
In literature, Old Testament religion, which ends with the conclusion of the New Testament, and Judaism, are often confused. This association is completely wrong. The expectation of the Messiah, which permeated the centuries-long history of the religion of the descendants of the Prophet Moses, ended. The goals and aspirations of the Hebrews, led by the Pharisees and Sadducees, stayed on Earth. Earthly well-being, wealth, success, and power became core values. In keeping with these, they imagined the anticipated Messiah.
However, the prophets foretold the coming of another Messiah—the Suffering Messiah. The Prophet Isaiah, who is called the "Old Testament Evangelist" (see Saint Jerome, Letter to Paulinus) because of his many prophesies and the precision of their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, speaks about this with impressive clarity and precision.
What then is the true Messiah? "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth… for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand" (Isa. 53:7-10).
Were the Jews familiar with this chapter of the great prophet? Not all of them. Usually during weekly readings at the synagogue this chapter is omitted. Here is an excerpt from the memoirs of Rosa Price, who survived the horrors of several Nazi concentration camps and accepted Jesus Christ. Her daughter became a follower of the Savior Jesus, but she adhered to old misconceptions. "I ran to the rabbi. He would tell me different Scriptures with which to challenge my family. In response, they would give me five more. At the urging of my family, I asked the rabbi about Isaiah 53. He said, “No Jew reads that, especially not a Jewish woman.” So I couldn’t read it. The same for Psalm 22. There are 328 prophecies of the coming of the suffering servant Messiah. I asked the rabbi about almost all of them. Finally, the rabbi told me not to come to the synagogue anymore because I had read him Isaiah 53" (Rosa Price. The Survivor // Sid Roth. They Thought for Themselves. WWP, 2007).
How did the lawyers, who knew many parts of the Old Testament Bible by heart, explain the chapter? In the period of the Talmud's formation, the scribes recognized that the 53rd chapter was a prophecy of the Messiah's coming. However, beginning with the famed Hebrew exegete Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki; 1040 - 1105), rabbis assert that the 53rd chapter speaks of the Jewish people. A simple reference to the text can refute this belief.
  • "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows" (Isa. 53:4). Whose grief did the Jewish people take on and whose sorrows did they carry?
  • "With his stripes we are healed" (Isa. 53:5). Who has been healed by the wounds of the Jewish people?
  • "For the transgression of my people was he stricken" (Isa. 53:8). If it is speaking of the Jewish people, then who suffered punishment for the transgressions of the Jewish people?
  • "And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death" (Isa. 53:9). When and in which grave are the Jewish people buried?
In the holy Old Testament books there are signs of the appearance of Christ (the Messiah) and in it are described his chief characteristics. Of the prophecies on the coming of Christ into the world in the Old Testament, before all else it is necessary to note the vision of the prophet Daniel, foretelling even the year of the Savior's death. “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined" (Dan. 9:24-26). Week (seven) is understood as 7 years, and 70 sevens consists of 490 years. It is the timeframe for the "end of sin." Here, we are talking about Christ the Savior's atonement for people who have violated the will of God and fallen from grace. In the prophecy, the Messiah is directly indicated ("to anoint the most Holy"). To calculate the amount of time given here, one must turn to historical sources, noting the reconstruction of the city of Jerusalem, which fell as a result of the Babylonian destruction in 586. The count of seventy sevens begins from the date of the reconstruction of Jerusalem. The decree for the restoration was given by Artaxerxes Longimanus in the 20th year of his reign. He came to the throne between December 18, 465 and December 18, 464 BC. The seventh year of his reign, from which the countdown of weeks begins, comes in 458 or 457. From this time period to the time of the appearance of Christ our Lord, 69 weeks (483 years) should pass.
The Forerunner of the coming of the Messiah is also mentioned in the Old Testament. "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts" (Mal. 3:1). Dwellers in Palestine knew the Holy Scripture and saw in John, who preached repentance, the Angel of the Covenant predicted by the prophets. Thus, people from all of Jerusalem and all the outskirts of the Jordan came to him (see Mark 1:5).
In the holy books of the Old Testament, there are prophecies of all of the main events in the life of Jesus the Messiah. The prophet Micah identified the place of birth: "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting" (Mic. 5:2).
The Word of God demonstrated the great spiritual gifts of the future Anointed One. "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord" (Isa. 11:1-2). All of this was fulfilled by Jesus: "... the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes" (Matt. 7:28-29).
Through the prophets, the Holy Spirit indicated a special distinguishing feature of the Messiah, the extraordinary power of wonderworking: "He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert" (Isa. 35:4-6). When the two men came to Jesus from John the Baptist to ask, "Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?" (Luke 7:20), the Lord before all else points to the miracles he has performed: "The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me" (Luke 7:22-23). The people knew that the Messiah would be characterized by the miracles he performed. "Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?” (Matt. 12:22-23).
A mind corrupted by sin could not notice the parts of the Old Testament in which the spiritual qualities of the promised Messiah are given: "Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass" (Zech. 9:9).
  1. The Jews, having rejected the Messiah as the incarnate Son of God, could not remain in the scope of the Revelation given in the Old Testament. Gradually, to the Law given by God, the Pharisees and scribes added 613 commandments: 365 positive commandments and 248 negative commandments.
The Lord rebukes the Hebrew teachers of the law. "For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men" (Mark 7:8). Faith in God as a real, absolute Person—this is monotheism—is replaced by ritualism. In Judaism, the authority of the Talmud is greater than the Torah (Pentateuch). The famed rabbi Adin Steinsaltz writes, "If the Torah is the foundation of Judaism, then the Talmud is the central pillar supporting the entire spiritual and philosophical edifice. In many ways, the Talmud is the most important book in Jewish culture, the backbone of creativity and of national life. No other work has had a comparable influence on the theory and practice of Jewish life. The Jews always recognized that as a people, their preservation and development depends on the study of the Talmud" ("What is the Talmud?").
What is this "central pillar" of Judaism? I will introduce an excerpt from the Tract Sabbath, with commentary from Rabbi Pinchas Kehati: "The cripple may go out with his wooden leg; such is the decree of Rabbi Meir, but Rabbi Jose prohibits it. If the wooden leg has a receptacle for pads, it is subject to defilement. Crutches are subject to defilement by being sat or trodden upon; but one may go out with them on Sabbath and enter the outer court (of the Temple). The chair and crutches of a paralytic are subject to defilement, and one must not go out with them on the Sabbath nor enter the outer court (of the Temple). Stilts are not subject to defilement, but nevertheless one must not go out with them on Sabbath."
Commentary: "The cripple, a man with one amputated leg, may go out on the Sabbath on his wooden leg, an artificial leg, made according to the size of his shin. Such is the decree of Rabbi Meir, who believes that an artificial leg corresponds to footwear, while Rabbi Jose forbids the cripple from going out with his wooden leg on the Sabbath. According to him, it does not correspond to footwear because the cripple stands primarily with his hands on a cane, while the artificial leg is only for appearance's sake so that his physical handicap would go unnoticed. Thus, the artificial leg on Sabbath is seen as an unnecessary load, and it is prohibited to enter with it. According to the other point of view, Rabbi Jose agrees that the artificial leg equates to footwear, however he is afraid that the man will detach it and will carry over 4 cubits into the public domain, but Rabbi Meir does not have this fear.
I risk fatiguing the reader, but I will introduce one more place from the Talmud to fully portray the spiritual deadness of ritualism. “There are two acts constituting the transfer (of things which are prohibited) on the Sabbath, which are in turn subdivided into four for a man who finds himself inside a private domain (reshut hayachid). The two acts are, however, increased to four for a man who finds himself outside in the public domain (reshut harabim). How so? For example, a mendicant stands outside (in reshut harabim) and the master of a house inside (in reshut hayachid). The mendicant passes his hand into the house (through for example a window) and puts something into the hand of the master (let's say a basket, so that he might give him a piece of bread), or (another variation) the mendicant reaches out and takes something from the master's hand (a piece of bread). In these two cases, the mendicant is breaking the law of the Sabbath, but the host is not. Or, if the master of the house (being inside) passes his hand through a window and puts, say, a piece of bread, into the hand of the mendicant, or, having put out his hand, he takes an object (a basket) from the hands of the mendicant, who is standing outside on the street, and brings it into the house, the master of the house would have broken the law of the Sabbath, but not the mendicant. This is the first part of the Mishna, which has demonstrated to us what the “two acts” of transferring objects mean, from the position of one who is inside, and from the position of one who finds himself outside. Carrying out any of these acts on the Sabbath is prohibited" (Tract Sabbath).[1]
Instead of a living faith in a merciful God and love towards one’s fellow man, entire volumes of the Talmud are filled with the sophistic disputes of various rabbinical schools over what to do with an egg laid by a chicken on the Sabbath, or about a host giving bread to a beggar, so that he does not break the Sabbath.
What a huge spiritual distance there was between the prophets and the scribes! The first to shine in the faith were those who participated in the source of heavenly wisdom, while others directed their extraordinary erudition to "solving" questions irrelevant to life. The lawyers occasionally thrashed out whether one may move a ladder from one dovecote to another on feast days.
It is obvious that religious life, in which ritualism is the determining principle, will become formalistic. "Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men" (Isa. 29:13).
Falling away from the living source of Truth will inevitably lead to dissolution and barrenness. In medieval European church art, the contrast between Christianity and Judaism was allegorically represented in the form of two female figures: the Church and the Synagogue. The south portal of the transept (cross aisle) of the cathedral in Strasbourg (approx. 1230) is decorated with such sculptures. The woman representing the Church, clearly and confidently carries a cross in her right hand as if resting on it. The straight folds of her cloak, flowing down to the ground, make her figure solid and firm. Her head is crowned. Her gaze is cast into the distance. The figure of the synagogue holds to her body a spear broken in several places. The bend of the figure repeats the broken line. Scrolls fall out of her left hand. Her head is downcast. Her eyes are blindfolded, a symbol of spiritual darkness.
  1. The next phase of Judaism's retreat from Biblical monotheism was the rise and expansion among the Jews of Kabbalah (in Hebrew qabbalah means acceptance or tradition) of mystical teachings and practices. This esoteric theosophical teaching is in spirit and letter absolutely foreign to the Holy Scripture. Two books initiate an exposition of Kabbalah: Sefer Yetzirah (the Book of Creation) and Zohar (Splendor of Radiance). The former was likely written in the sixth and seventh centuries B.C. Confirmation by the Kabbalists themselves of the existence of Sefer Yetzirah already during the time of patriarch Abraham is absolutely mythical and has no evidence. On the contrary, the presence in these books of philosophical ideas of late antiquity, such as Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, and others, completely refutes this view. The author of Zohar is believed to be the Spanish Kabbalist Moshe (Moses) de Leon. It was written in approximately 1300 A.D. The desire of modern Kabbalists to make the author of Zohar the disciple of rabbi Akiva Shimon Bar Yochai (Laitman, M. The Book of Zohar. M., 2003. p. 185)[2] , who lived in the second century A.D., contradicts the view of experts. "The Aramaic language of all eighteen of these sections is throughout the same, and throughout it displays the same individual peculiarities. This is all the more important because it is not in any sense a living language which Simeon ben Yohai and his colleagues in the first half of the second century A.D. in Palestine might have conceivably spoken. The Aramaic of the Zohar is a purely artificial affair, a literary language employed by a writer who obviously knew no other Aramaic than that of certain Jewish literary documents, and who fashioned his own style in accordance with definite subjective criteria. The expectation expressed by some scholars that philological investigation would reveal the older strata of the Zohar has not been borne out by actual research. Throughout these writings, the spirit of mediaeval Hebrew, specifically the Hebrew of the thirteenth century, is transparent behind the Aramaic facade" (Scholem, G. (1954). Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism. p. 163).[3]
Kabbalah is divided into the contemplative (Kabbalah Iyunit) and practical (Kabbalah Maasit). The central aspect of the Kabbalah is Ein Sof (The Infinite). In contrast to the God of the Holy Scriptures, Ein Sof has no name because he is without person, unknowable, and incomprehensible. No attributes can be ascribed to him. Ein Sof makes himself known in his manifestations (not to all, but to Jewish mystics). Ein Sof's chief manifestation is the original man, Adam Kadmon. Through his emanations (flows) the ten sefirot come into being, which are the attributes of God. Ten sefirot represent the mystical body of Adam Kadmon (heavenly Adam). He appears as a result of emanation and has no image or form. The earthly Adam was created in the image of heavenly Adam. The tenth sefirot is called "the Kingdom" or Malkuth. It unites all ten sefirot. In Zohar, Malkuth—or Kingdom—denotes how the Knesset (assembly) of Israel is a mystical prototype of the House of Israel (Shekhinah). In The Dialectics of Myth (XIV. 3), Aleksei Losev writes, “As a very well-educated Jew and great expert of Kabbalistic and Talmudic literature (from which I, with the nasty habits of a European observer, sought to learn exclusively about the Neoplatonic influences in Kabbalah) told me, the essence of all Kabbalah does not at all consist in pantheism, as liberal scholars think, who compare the doctrine of Ein Sof and the Sephirot with Neo-Platonism, but rather with pan-Israelitism: the Kabbalistic God needs Israel for His own salvation, He was incarnated in Israel and became it. Therefore the myth of the world domination by a deified Israel, which is forever contained in God.”
Kabbalists have established a correspondence among the different sefirot with parts of the human body. Becoming familiar with this primitive mythological arrangement of the structure of the universe, it becomes difficult to ignore the question that Kabbalists themselves do not ask: What is the source of this "knowledge"? How does one manage to conclude that the sefirot of the Crown (Keter) is the brow, the Tiferet is the chest, Victory (Netzach) and Majesty (Hod) is man's hip?
The esoteric teachings of Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar are fundamentally incompatible with the biblical teaching on God, the world, man, and humanity's path to salvation. Contemplative Kabbalah represents a combination of elements of Gnosticism of the second and third centuries A.D. and Neo-Platonism. From the Gnostics, it borrows the teaching of the 10 eons, which comprise the pleroma (universal fullness). Dualism is the link between Gnostics and Kabbalists; the idea of eternal enmity began with good (light) and evil (darkness). Kabbalah's dualistic world view finds a direct expression in Sefer Yetzirah: "Also Elohim made every object, one opposite the other: good opposite evil, evil opposite good, good from good, evil from evil, the good delineates the evil and the evil delineates the good, good is kept for the good and evil is kept for the evil.” It is evident that the teaching, which ascribes evil an ontological status, leads to the justification of evil. In contrast, according to the Holy Scripture, evil was not created by God, but arose as a result of the abuse of the gift of freedom given by God to his creatures, Angels and mankind.
Kabbalistic teaching is an obvious expression of pantheism, a complete retreat from monotheism. God and the world are understood as one complete whole. The world is only a manifestation of God. Pantheism is fraught with internal contradictions. Its logical consequence is inevitably first the derogation of God, and next, denial of him, because all of the world's imperfections are attributed to him.
Kabbalists divide the world into male and female elements. The right and left spheres are respectively male and female. The world is presented as a loving union, as the unification of male and female elements. The relationship between the spheres is interpreted with the help of gender symbolism.
Kabbalah presents itself as a fantastical mix of esoteric occultism, blended with pagan religious and philosophical ideas. It attests to a complete regression from the great and saving teachings of the Bible with its deep and sustained monotheism.

2024.05.18 19:24 Imaginary-Eye7634 Beyond stressed on what to do 18M about my girlfriends' emotional abuse 18F

I made a post about this a week ago and was informed she was emotionally abusive, but I still have no idea what to do
I love this girl so much. She's incredibly attractive, intelligent, funny, and we have the same sexual interests, life aspirations, and educational/career goals. We've been together for almost a year and a half now.
I'm in University and do a lot for her, I drive 100 miles round trip to see her and bring her flowers weekly. We haven't cuddled or had sex since January, and I desperately miss it. I bring it up to her and she gets defensive, telling me to stop bringing it up and that we'll have more time in the Summer when we both don't have school. For her birthday, I got her some lottery tickets, her favorite energy drink, home-made cookies in the shape of hearts, flowers, and a hand-written card with a love letter and cute drawings of us and her cat on it.
She didn't like it. She was mad it seemed like "last-minute" and the cookies were terrible (they were honestly, I fucked up). She said I ruined her birthday and in a fight called me a r*tard, childish, immature, and claimed I don't care about her. I had a nervous break from other extreme stressors in my life and sped off, making a scene with my tires squealing and getting uninvited from an end-of the academic year trip with her and her mom.
I texted her about how I felt afterwards, and she told me some reassuring things. She goes through some periods in her life where she lashes out, that she just needs to work through this and it'll be better when we can finally spend more time together, that shes disappointed how hurt she made me feel both then and over the past semester with me feeling unwanted, saying its a bad habit she wants to get rid of because she knows how it hurts. We agreed that open communication was the key to fixing it, that we love each other and that is more than enough to fix any issue. She told me it was really nice talking to me like this, and that she appreciated everything I did for her. She did nice things for me like giving me cute cat stickers and sending me recipes so that I could learn to be a better cook.
I told her I wanted to talk to her in person about it, and we did. I envisioned a long drive where we talked for a while, she spent 5 minutes telling me she appreciated me for putting up with her, that she knows shes hard to deal with, and she loves me, and she wants to spend more time together in the future/summer when it'll be better. Then she moved on.
I wasn't ready to move on, and later on in the short drive back, she got mad at me for communicating too much. She didn't think I had anything else important to say, that I was repeating myself (Its hard for me to get words out when I'm interrupted and stressed sometimes), and that I ruined it because we were on a positive note and then I turned it into a negative note by bringing up somethign that we already talked about. She got mad and refused to move on when I offered that, remaining mostly silent. She asked what my parents thought and if I told them about the argument we had on her birthday. I did, she dropped me off and gave me an I love you.
She left for her trip yesterday. Last night texted that something went wrong, and she might be coming back today. This morning she texted me that she doesn't appreciate me sharing everything about our argument with my family/friends (and the internet via this throwaway account, but she doesn't know that). That she values privacy and I'm victimizing myself after ruining her birthday yet again, and that she "just can't". I can't either. I feel stressed and like I can never do anything right to make her happy. She makes me feel like a bad boyfriend when I don't think thats the case.
I know its emotional abuse by now. I have a therapy meeting on Thursday to discuss this. But I don't think its intentional on her part, this is her first relationship too and she has had a whole life of being emotionally/physically abused so shes used to this. Not to justify it. I want her to change with how much I love her and how perfect she is in so many ways. That said, I don't see how it can be done if she doesn't want to communicate with me.
I don't even know how to respond to her texts this morning. I'm tempted to write a big letter of how I love her and how I feel and why, but I'm scared shes just going to get mad at it and me. I dont think she knows how much shes hurting me, and I'm not sure if I'm to blame at all. What is love without communication and improving to be better for each other? I'm also terrified that if I leave her as everyone I ask for advice from is telling me to, I won't find anyone better. She's just so perfect for me in so many ways. I'm heartbroken our relationship has deteriorated to this, and the only way I can see it getting better is through mutual communication and acknowledgement of faults which is proving difficult.
Any thoughts or opinions/reassurances would be deeply appreciated. Thank you
TLDR; girlfriend verbally abuses me when she's mad, apologizes, does nice things for me, then "solves" the issue on her own through communication and gets mad at me when I'm not done communicating and bring up the issue already "solved" by her and ruining the high note it left on. I love her more than anything and know I shouldn't tolerate this treatment, but I don't think she realizes how wrong it is. I want to inform her in a nonjudgemental way and help her to get better, but I don't know how. I'm terrified of leaving her. I feel like she truly loves me and our relationship can get better, but only if she acknowledges something is wrong and we work through it together, which we are having trouble with.

2024.05.18 18:39 jadiana Comparison to when CAD became a thing

I am a mechanical designer. I began on a drafting table back in the early 1980s. I worked in what we called 'bull pens', big rooms of draftsmen, all 'ass and elbows'. Drinking coffee, smoking, and drawing all day, a phone at either end of the room. Often my jobs were even as simple as just lettering parts lists on drawings. I remember that it was 40 hours billing for a D sized drawing, no matter what was on it.
It took a pyramid of an engineer or two, some designers under them, and dozens of draftsmen to do a drawing. Oh, and a Checker.
Then CAD (AutoCAD to be precise) came along and what happened is that the expectation became that that designers and engineers would do their own drafting. Because of the nature of working with CAD, when you worked out the design, you pretty much had the drafting done too. So just plain old draftsmen disappeared, you really had to be able to do design too.
I don't know what happened when the 30 draftsmen weren't being hired anymore, I assume a lot of them became designers, or quit the industry for other jobs.
Timetables collapsed too. Instead of weeks for a drawing, it became days. People either loved it or hated it. Or both. At first, no one trusted the CAD files and we still printed everything out and considered the print the 'real' work. There was this stink eye about it all. And it didn't help that suddenly we had these 'cad jockeys' that would show up, fresh from ITT or some place, that knew how to work AutoCAD, but knew jack about making a good drawing.
Anyways. In time, industry changed and got used it and was better for it. And I predict the same thing will happen with AI art. That consolidation will happen. You want to create a comic book, an illustrated novel, a movie, animation, whatever, now the 'engineer' (person with the Big Idea) will/can do it all.

2024.05.18 16:41 cottongrassmound Mountaintop dweller seeking the samehearted. (Canada, 28F)

I have a unique seasonal job that lets me live in a remote and wild place in complete and utter isolation for about half of every year. It is much more than only a job. It is the very center of my world and being now.
I was already weird before, and I'm both more and less weird now. I've learned to relate to other humans really quickly on my offseasons, but I also hardly feel related to but a few on a spirit-nourishing level, because my experiences are so far divergent from the norm that they are impossible to really describe or communicate. I have found in the past that writing gets to the heart of things more. And recently I got thinking about my husband's collections of old handmade letters, zines, mix cassettes & CDS, original music, comics, that he used to exchange with friends. I think that I'd really adore both making and receiving creative letters/parcels, a handful of times a year. I think these medium might help me scratch that relational itch, and actually find a way to share my world more. So I thought I'll post here, give things a try, and maybe find someone to slowly build this sort of friendship with.
A little more about myself:
I am animist and daoist in worldview. I love to read writings relating to hermit practices, anthropology (especially of prehistorical, nomadic, or hunting-gathering-tending humans), the natural world, or the occasional thoughtful fiction story. I used to love writing, but not in any formal way. Many years ago, I studied plant ecology in university. The activities I most love are all related to making the things I need to live, together with the lands I live within. I am a crafter and maker, and the materials I work by principle with must be ones I can directly relate to, gather myself, and transform with my own hands. In recent years I am very focused on fiber crafts, working with wild animal and plant fibers, practicing handspinning, weaving, knitting, felting, and more using also all my own tools. But I also carve, tan hides, make pottery of wild clays, and so on. My projects are very slow, on the scale of seasons or years. As an example, I loosely "rear" wild silkmoth caterpillars on wild trees, protecting them from predation in exchange for their cocoons a year later when they emerge as moths. It will take three generations to produce one woven garment from the silk, or four years. I am on year two of this! I do also enjoy not-thinking, not-doing, or immersing in my own physicality. I love long-form foot travel, trail walking/hiking/running, and at different times I try to be consistent with weight training (winter) , calisthenics (summer), and qigong/taijiquan (always).
I used to have a more artistic side, which I'd like to explore more again. I would illustrate and draw animals/plants, and try to record small songs. My husband is a musician, painter, and photographer. He has so many old film and polaroid cameras I'm starting to play around with. I love trying to find how to capture the essence of how a place feels to me, or how I perceive it. My husband is also really into film, so I watch many with him and have a small interest in that medium of storytelling/creativity as well.
Outside any interests I could list, most of my days revolve around plain old living. I am usually in a cabin so this means fetching and heating rainwater or snow, cooking, tea brewing, gardening, and so on. I like discussing daily affairs, and lifestyle choices, as much as anything else.
I grew up sensitive and shy natured, but as I've grown I'm more matter-of-fact, accepting, practical. I have experienced a lot of loss and grief in my life, very recently even, and so I try to be kind and compassionate. I cannot help but always try to understand why people are the way they are, although I wish I could develop more indifference because that tendency gets me into sticky situations at times. I find it easiest to connect with wild animals, and I have many stories about them. (Bear stories most of all, for some reason.) I most admire toads, but my husband says I am like a marten. Relaxed among the trees and in high places where I feel in my element, a bit frenetic on the ground (metaphorically: in the humans' world) where I feel less belonging and stability. I'm becoming more adaptable so maybe I'll cultivate that toad mode someday.
I am totally open to whoever you are. Very occasional snail mail is my preference, but I expect we will communicate over email for a bit before we get to that. You don't have to be into arts or crafts. Likewise you don't have to be so verbose as I am. Maybe who I'm looking for will be more into this or that, like plain old letter writing, or sharing comics, or including drawings/photos, or crafts, or any combination. I'm willing to try whatever form of exchange feels best, or being very low-pressure and intuitive about it. I only really want to find someone who I jive with. Maybe who is very specific and deep along their own path, or along a similar path as mine. Sameness in worldview/values is something I crave these days. If you feel that, please reach out; I'd love to hear your story. ♡

2024.05.18 15:20 OkInterest7012 Sex trafficking survivor with tattoo idea for branding coverup

Cross posting;
Hi! I escaped human trafficking over 5 years ago, and am ready to start thinking about covering up my branding tattoo. I have used chat gpt to help generate an idea. And I could cry at how perfect the result is.
The branding is HUGE black letters on my lower back-mid lower back.
I would like any opinions on or ideas from others as well. So here goes it..
I also need someone to draw it, and tattoo it. I need it to be amazing.
After getting ideas I put together a rising Phoenix, the universe, and forest and mountains. Some of my favorite things, as well as so meaningful to my situation.
Here is chat gpts generation:
Covering a branding on your entire lower back with a cohesive and meaningful tattoo is a wonderful idea. Here’s a refined design concept for a "Phoenix Ascending from the Cosmic Forest" that will effectively cover your lower back:
Design Concept: "Phoenix Ascending from the Cosmic Forest" Central Element: Phoenix
Position: Center the phoenix on your lower back, with its body starting near your spine and wings extending outward towards your sides. The tail feathers can flow downwards towards the lower part of your back, integrating into the other elements. Design Details: The phoenix should be depicted in mid-flight, rising from the base of your back upwards. Use vibrant colors like reds, oranges, and yellows for the phoenix, transitioning to cooler tones like blues and purples as it ascends. Surrounding Elements:
Mountains
Base: Position the mountains at the bottom part of your back, forming the foundation from which the phoenix is rising. The peaks of the mountains can blend into the lower feathers of the phoenix. Design Details: Use a mix of sharp and soft lines to create a sense of grandeur and strength. Add shadows and highlights to give depth and realism. Forest
Foreground: Place the forest above the mountains, around the lower part of the phoenix’s body. Tall trees can rise on either side of the phoenix, their branches possibly intertwining with the phoenix’s wings or tail feathers. Design Details: Include details like leaves, rays of sunlight, and small animals to bring the forest to life. Use earthy tones like greens, browns, and greys to contrast with the phoenix’s vibrant colors. Universe / Star / Galaxy
Background: The cosmic elements can fill the upper part of your lower back, blending into the background behind the phoenix and forest. Swirling galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters can create a dynamic, ethereal backdrop. Design Details: Use deep blues, purples, and blacks with bright whites and other vivid colors for stars and galaxies. The phoenix’s upper feathers can appear to dissolve into stardust, seamlessly blending with the cosmic background. Additional Elements: Add constellations that hold personal significance or shooting stars to symbolize hope and new beginnings. Color Scheme
Phoenix: Warm tones (reds, oranges, yellows) transitioning to cool tones (blues, purples) to depict the transformation from fire to cosmic energy. Mountains and Forest: Earthy tones (greens, browns, greys) to ground the design and contrast with the vibrant phoenix and cosmic elements. Universe: Deep blues, purples, and blacks with specks of white and bright colors to represent stars and galaxies. Placement and Flow
Lower Back: The design should flow naturally across the lower back, covering the branding completely. The phoenix should be the central focus, with its body starting near the spine and wings extending outward. Integration: Ensure the elements (mountains, forest, and cosmic background) blend seamlessly with each other, creating a cohesive and unified piece. Working with a Tattoo Artist Consultation: Discuss your vision with a professional tattoo artist who specializes in cover-ups and detailed work. Bring reference images and explain the symbolism and significance of each element. Customization: A skilled artist can customize the design to fit your body’s contours and ensure the cover-up is effective. They can also suggest additional details or modifications to enhance the overall piece. This design concept not only covers your branding but transforms it into a powerful symbol of your journey and resilience. The combination of the phoenix, mountains, forest, and cosmic elements creates a rich, layered narrative that reflects overcoming adversity and rising anew.

2024.05.18 15:06 kaleviko [All] Goodbye, Mr DeMille

A brief recap. In the opening episode, the Fireman had a sit-down with a man who at least looked like Cooper. Telling he was "far away", the Fireman made him flicker and disappear. Next, we may have found the man as a remote control in Mitchum brothers' house in P10, in line with "far away" being another kind of "remote", like in a dream where our memories get wildly different meanings and grow into unexpected stories.
After observing Candie's bloody entry to the story in P10, this "remote" character seems to have sought the headless version of Cooper, appearing again as a remote control and guiding him to electrocute himself in P15. In line with hearing, "Get Gordon Cole" in television, the remote would have done just that and got to Cole, once more showing up as a remote control in P3 when Tammy presented Cole and Albert a picture of a blurry figure inside the New York glass box. The figure seems to have been none other than Candie hunting the fly, connecting her seemingly harmless character to the reason why Cole was needed.
This third appearance might have been the remote's last, at least as a remote control. Tammy left it on the conference room table. As usual, there was no special fanfare about that, and Lynch left it for us to figure out what was important to understand his story.
Framed in front of the remote, there was a cup of coffee and a picture of a little boy wearing a uniform. Earlier in the scene, the picture was literally given to us as a clue to the "identity of the killer". Let's treat it as a clue, then, together with the coffee cup right behind it.
This cup with a uniform had once been remote.
The word "cup" sounds the same as "cop". Adding that to a boy in a uniform, we'd get to P9 when Betty shared some details of the past with Twin Peaks deputies the ranks of which now included her son, Bobby.
Betty: "Bobby, when your father told me this, you were a very long way from where you are today."
In other words, Bobby had been in a faraway place. That is to say, he had been remote, now possibly true in more than one meaning of the word. While the scene superficially gave us an emotional moment between the mother and her son, the ever-trolling Lynch would actually have been telling us that it was Bobby who had been the mysterious remote control.
In a possible throwback to the coffee cup next to the remote, the scene wrapped up when Betty turned to his son.
Betty: "Well, fellas, let's have that coffee."
As everyone burst to laughter, that typically indicated we just got some especially absurd twist in the story.
No backstory was offered how Bobby had become a deputy. Everyone at least acted like he indeed was one, but unlike other named characters working at the Sheriff's station, we didn't ever see if he had an office or a desk there. He was always walking in the corridors, entering rooms and hanging around with others.
This was also how we first met Bobby in P4, walking in the corridor. He had just went past the station's conference room - or perhaps he had come out of the room. There was nothing else in the direction he was coming from, and he didn't come from the other end of the corridor that led to the back office where Maggie and others worked.
The remote left the conference room.
Bobby stopped when the Sheriff called him. When the Sheriff walked past the open conference room door, we could see it was dark. No one was there. Yet, Hawk was supposed to be in the conference room looking for "something" that was missing, like seen next when the Sheriff and others joined him.
When glitches like this broke the continuity of the story, that seems to have been done to draw our attention to something important, in this case then to the conference room that was where the remote control was last seen and where Bobby might have come out of when the Sheriff spotted him.
In related developments, Bobby seems to have been the nameless "contact" that Ray told in P2 he had found to help Mr C get some "information" while Ray himself would have appeared as Sheriff Frank Truman, entering this dreamlike Twin Peaks storyline to manipulate Bobby so as to get the coveted information from Betty.
If you are a Ray, you need a remote for contact.
Reflecting these ideas to the remote control, we would get another absurd abstraction. There were repeated shots of people pointing televisions with a remote control - in P3, P10 and P15. This was possibly done to not only draw our attention to the device itself but also to remind us that the contact between the remote and the television happens through an infrared ray, another play with the name of a character, now with that of Ray Monroe.
Due to the infrared ray needing to point directly at the television, a remote control spends a lot of time towards the screen, literally checking every channel that has something to see. This appeared to be what Bobby had been up to when he reported to the Sheriff in P4.
Sheriff Truman: "Anything on your surveillance cameras?" Bobby: "Uh, elk, deer, raccoon, squirrel and a bear. If they're coming down from Canada in our area, I would've seen them."
Whatever we thought that would have been about, the story didn't get back to any of it. Instead, we probably got another complicated throwback to a previous scene with a remote control, again a good tad more suggestive than what we might be looking for.
The list of animals and the lone article "a" used for the bear would produce letters EDRSAB which is an anagram for BREADS. In P15, when Cooper clicked the remote control and froze Sunset Boulevard, there was Cecil B DeMille on screen, playing himself, of which we got some needless dialog.
DeMille: "Good-bye, dear." Norma: "Good-bye, Mr DeMille."
See Mr Miller to get some flour for your breads.
Nothing seems to go waste in Return but everything is in the service of the absurdly rich story. DeMille's last name is French and means a miller, one who makes flour. You need flour first, if you want to make breads next. Thus, after seeing the "miller" on one screen - then as a remote - Bobby would have got BREADS on the next one - now as a deputy.
This would get a further meaning because it was also breads that Bobby's daughter Becky delivered to RR Diner in P5, riding Steven's "another old car", the 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, where both of them snorted another kind of white flour. Ultimately, this probably was all about Bobby keeping an eye on his daughter who used drugs.

2024.05.18 10:39 GalaxiGazer This is for the *real* you

Dear *real* you,
I know that my first letter to you was more of a sloppy introduction and venting, so I do apologize if I came across to you the wrong way. This time, after getting some rest and finishing off this workweek on a high note, I'm able to present myself (in written form) to you in a much better way.
We have yet to meet and to realistically get to know each other, so it's not like we're presently involved with one another. This enables me to have the freedom to share with you more of my historical background and how it's beginning to lead me and draw me to you.
If you've been following or have taken a quiet interest in anything or everything I've posted, you'd know that there was a recent ghost I'm currently tasked with slaying. I can assure you that he is no one for you to worry about. The universe already knows that he's wrong for me, which was why I'm under strict orders not to go out and replace him. Yes, eventually, things will work out for you and I to get together and build our own empire. For now, though, I'm clearing out all of my dead connections and this ghost was one of them. In a weird way, letting him go while not looking for you is actually beginning to ... draw me to you. And the way in which it happened was unexpected.
As part of my healing journey, the universe wants me to channel my energy into a deeply hidden and unlocked passion that I never really knew I had: MUSIC. I answered a question here (it was something about Tennessee) and my mind followed. My first stop was in Lynchburg, where I would appropriately lay my ghost's memory to rest in the most enjoyable way (the second greatest love of his life was American whiskey). Lady A's "Hey Bartender" would be the right musical score as I mix just the right amount of proof to silence him and remember him no more. My next stop would be Memphis.
I'm going to share with you one of the best dreams I've had. I was in Memphis (I've been through there years ago, so maybe it was a suppressed memory from more than 13 years ago) and ... well ... I don't remember exactly I was, but I was sitting at this magnificent, black, grand piano. The next thing I knew, I was playing the opening guitar riff to Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" on the keys. I was having fun and tickled those keys so easily! The jazz band playing followed along with me. But right before Axl Rose would start singing, I woke up. I can't read or write music (yet), but if I did, I would have immediately composed what I heard shortly after waking up while I still had it in my head.
Okay, so how does that relate to you? As I continued listening to that song, somehow my mind began to think of Elvis. Somewhere between missing those impersonators when I was in Vegas and wondering if anyone in jail actually does the "Jailhouse Rock", I thought of you and I living it up as we tour Graceland. On my own, I had no real intentions of ever going. But if you desire to visit there, I'm definitely up for the ride alongside you. Of course, in my theatrical mind, we look at all of his stills from past performances and we suddenly recognize another artist ~ Rick Astley. You know that popular "Never Gonna Give You Up" thumbnail that practically everyone was familiar with? Who was he trying to emulate? Elvis Presley, the Original Rickroller.
Then my last stop would be in Nashville. This time, I'll take you a little further back into my history, back into 2013. I lived in the South, involved with the Christian church, and I had the opportunity to be a part of the Girls of Grace tour that was hosted by First Priority. While the students were blessed with performances and testimonies from Moriah Peters and For King & Country, I actually got to meet a few of the recording execs and talent managers who worked in Nashville. One lady I spoke with was eager to meet my crush at the time, as I had bragged on how well he was gifted musically. I almost gave to her his cover of Club Noveau's "Lean on Me" that he performed for VBS that year (I somehow lost it in the YahooVerse). It turned out for the best, though, because I eventually learned from his closest friends and character witnesses that he really didn't want to "commercialize" his talent and wanted to keep it in the church. Oh, well. I then met an intern who took the time to explain exactly how songs were recorded and produced. Turns out, after all, that each part of the song (guitars, drums, vocals, etc.) are all recorded separately before they are put together, before the artist actually sings the song. What we hear is the COMPLETED product of many hours of rehearsals, retakes, and experimenting with different key and tempo changes.
In closing, I'll take you just a decade back into my history with the last ghost (I promise!). Before you, but also to date as of May 2024, this guy was the best one I've ever dated. The one thing I remember about him was his exceptional musical talent, how he could easily go from the piano/keyboard, guitars (electric, bass, and acoustic), drums, and vocals. I admired that about him. One night after we had dinner at Chili's and saw the premiere of Pirates of the Carribean, he brought me to his house (his mom lived with him, so it wasn't what you might be thinking). While he was in the bathroom, I noticed that he had carved out a little recording studio from the living room. I noticed the drum set, so I just ... picked up those sticks and started playing. He then picked up one of his electric guitars and started playing. His mom quietly came out from her room and leaned on the counter, watching us play. After we finished with our impromptu performance, we noticed her there and immediately began apologizing. She just laughed and went, "I was just enjoying the concert!"
Okay, back to the present ...
What's my point? With each of those connections that I had valued at one point in time, they spoke my language: *MUSIC*. What does the universe want me to reinvest my energy into chasing? *MUSIC*. This is also telling you exactly how you can reach me and how I can distinguish your voice, your energy, from all the rest. It's by you speaking my language.
Do I expect you to be somehow put off, intimidated or otherwise repulsed by my history? No. I already know that you have your own history with many (or few) women who, for one reason or another, just didn't work out. Yes, you have your own Jordan Davis story to tell me. Yes, at some point in the future, you'll be able to tell me "There wouldn't be no you and me right now if it weren't for the almost maybes." Yes, it will be worth waiting for.
Until then, just know that I'll continue to follow the universe and chase the music in me, marching to the beat of my own drum. When the time is right, and without missing a beat, you'll be able to pick up your own guitar and strum right along.
~ Me

An AI uprising awaits us: Elon Musk's company unveils new project

Elon Musk wants to "understand the true nature of the universe". At least that's what he said on his website announcing the launch of his new artificial intelligence company. The only question on his mind is "What impact will this development have on society?".
Musk reportedly founded xAI in Nevada and purchased "about 10,000 graphics processing units" - the equipment needed to develop and run advanced artificial intelligence systems. The company has not disclosed the source of its funding, but the Financial Times reported in April that Musk was in talks to secure funding from investors in SpaceX and Tesla, the companies he heads. The company hasn't revealed many details about its intentions, but said on its website that its team will participate in a conference call at Twitter Spaces to answer questions. xAI said the artificial intelligence company will work closely with Twitter, Tesla and others to achieve its mission.

xAI and Musk's artificial intelligence story

The xAI team, led by Musk, includes former employees of leading artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and DeepMind, as well as Microsoft and Tesla. Among the consultants is Dan Hendricks, director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Security. The Center for Artificial Intelligence Security has a strong focus on security.
In May of this year, the organization released a statement signed by hundreds of AI scientists and experts, as well as executives from some of the leading AI companies, saying that reducing the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. Demis Hassabis, of DeepMind, Inc. Hassabis, OpenAI Sam Altman and Anthropic Dario Amodei were among the signatories. Musk did not sign the Center for AI Safety's statement, but he did sign an open letter published in March by the Future of Life Institute calling on AI companies to "immediately suspend training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months".

Musk's involvement in investments

Musk is one of the founding presidents of OpenAI, along with OpenAI Altman. Musk was part of a group of investors, including Altman, Greg Brockman, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Amazon Web Services, Infosys and YC Research, who committed $1 billion in funding to OpenAI in 2015. Musk has stated that he contributed $100 million of that $1 billion.

Quitting the campaign

The exact circumstances of Musk's departure are not entirely clear. According to an OpenAI blog post and Musk's subsequent tweets, he left OpenAI to avoid a conflict of interest when Tesla began to focus more on artificial intelligence. Semafor later reported that Musk offered to lead OpenAI but left after the offer was rejected. The FT said the reason for Musk's departure was conflicts with other board members and employees over OpenAI's approach to AI security.
Since leaving the company, Musk has criticized OpenAI's direction. In an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson in April this year, Musk said: "They're now closed-source, clearly commercial and closely tied to Microsoft". The partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI is worth billions of dollars: OpenAI gets access to Microsoft's cloud computing in exchange for OpenAI's artificial intelligence systems, which are used in Microsoft products.

Musk's outrage

In March, Musk wrote on Twitter, "I still don't understand how a non-profit organization I donated about $100 million to turned into a for-profit organization with a market capital of $30 billion dollars." OpenAI has previously said it went from a nonprofit organization to a "hybrid of for-profit and nonprofit" because the computational demands of training advanced artificial intelligence systems meant OpenAI needed to raise more funds than a typical nonprofit organization.
In his interview with Carlson, Musk also said he was concerned that AI models would be trained to be "politically correct" and promised to create Truth GPT, which he said would be the ultimate truth-seeking AI.

The risks of advanced AI systems

In the past, Musk has often talked about the risks of advanced AI systems, and in an interview, he also said he is creating a new AI organization to prevent an "AI utopia". However, experts and researchers, including xAI consultant Hendricks, have expressed concern that adding another well-funded company to the AI ecosystem could further fuel the race to develop powerful AI systems at the expense of efforts to secure them.
In response to reports that Musk may start a new AI company, Hendricks wrote that "the emergence of major new AI developers could increase competitive pressures" and that "the desire to be first could lead to sacrifices by players, especially when it comes to trade-offs between security and competitiveness".
Musk also reiterated that his approach to creating safe AI will be based on the spirit of AI truth-seeking during a discussion with Congressmen Ro Khanna and Mike Gallagher in the Twitter space. Musk said: In terms of safety AI, AI with extreme curiosity, AI that seeks to understand the universe, will be pro-human. From the point of view that human is more interesting than no human.

Commentary from the head of AI policy

Jess Whittlestone, head of AI policy at the UK-based think tank Center for Long-Term Resilience, told TIME via email that this is "an unorthodox (and, it seems to me, rather naive) approach to AI security. I'm not sure you can say what it means for AI to be "maximally curious," and it's a huge leap to assume that means AI will support humans. The whole problem is that we can't fully understand these AI models or predict their behavior, and I don't see Musk's approach as solving that problem".
Elon Musk has always been known for his radical and innovative thinking, which is often ground down by those who look at the world from a more practical perspective. We have the opportunity to look at this issue from different angles and draw our own conclusions and form our own attitude to these innovations. Time will show how it will affect the future of society.
