2024.05.19 12:58 kasenyee I need new music, what would you recommend?

I’m not very adventurous, and I’m not really “in jt” but I feel like exploring a little.
Based on bands on like, I’d love to get some suggestions on modern/contemporary bands you think I’d enjoy. Ideally Something no more than 15 years old (2010’s).
In no particular order, here’s some of the bands and albums on my punk playlist…

2024.05.19 08:47 _MFB_ RADS - Reactive Airway Disorder Syndrome, A type of asthma

I've been dealing with what was initially diagnosed as asthma after inhaling toxic fumes from heated Motul 300V POWER 5W40 motor oil from the exhaust system of a Subaru we were working on back on March 19, 2019. This caused severe symptoms like excess mucus and a drowning sensation. Recently, my doctor has diagnosed it as Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS). I also have asthma and allergic rhinitis. Motul 300V POWER 5W40 contains several components that can be hazardous when inhaled: lubricating oils (petroleum, C20-50, hydrotreaded neutral oil-based) 10-25%, mineral oil 1-2.5%, distillates (petroleum, solvent-dewaxed heavy paraffinic) 1-2.5%, and C14-16-18 alkyl phenol <1%. These components can release harmful fumes when heated, leading to respiratory irritation and other health issues.
After the exposure, I underwent several tests in April 2019 to assess the impact on my respiratory health. The arterial blood gas (ABG) test on April 4, 2019, showed normal acid-base status with a pH of 7.415, pCO2 of 40.2 mmHg, and pO2 of 89.8 mmHg, with oxygen saturation at 97.1%, indicating no immediate respiratory failure but highlighting the need for further assessment. The pulmonary function test (PFT) with post-bronchodilator study on April 4, 2019, showed normal spirometry results with no obstructive ventilatory defect noted. The FEV1/FVC ratio was within normal limits, and there was no significant response to bronchodilators, suggesting that the primary issue was not related to airflow obstruction. The chest X-ray on April 2, 2019, showed some degree of haziness in the right lower lung, which could be due to vascular shadows or beginning/resolving infiltrates, with no consolidation observed. My recent chest X-ray shows all clear, indicating that any previous abnormalities have resolved, suggesting no current radiographic signs of lung disease or persistent inflammation.
On May 10, 2024, I cut my Symbicort dosage from 2 puffs AM and PM to 1 puff each. I felt good after missing my dose on May 16, 2024, so I reduced it to 1 puff a day. As of May 17, 2024, I'm off Symbicort completely. During a Stryd run test meant to last 10 minutes, I ended at 4:40. No wheezing, headache, or chest tightness—just felt out of breath and had some phlegm, but didn’t need to use Symbicort. Regular use of POWERbreathe has really strengthened my respiratory muscles. I'm successfully managing asthma without daily Symbicort, keeping symptoms in check. Overall, I'm feeling better with improved breathing and less reliance on meds. Using the POWERbreathe IMT device has been a game-changer for me. It’s allowed me to reduce and eventually stop using Symbicort. My respiratory muscles are stronger, and my asthma is under control.

RADS - Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome
• Definition: RADS is a condition that resembles asthma but is distinct from it. It occurs after a single, high-level exposure to an irritating substance, such as fumes, chemicals, or smoke. This exposure leads to acute and chronic respiratory symptoms. • Relation to Asthma: While RADS presents with symptoms similar to asthma (such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath), it is not classified as a type of asthma. Instead, it is a specific syndrome triggered by an acute exposure event, whereas asthma is typically a chronic condition with multiple potential triggers.
Correct Description
RADS - Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome
• Definition: A condition that occurs after a single, high-level exposure to an irritating substance, leading to asthma-like symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. • Relation to Asthma: While it has symptoms similar to asthma, RADS is distinct and is specifically triggered by a one-time exposure to an irritant, unlike chronic asthma which can have multiple and ongoing triggers.
This distinction is important for understanding the nature of RADS and how it differs from chronic asthma.

2024.05.19 00:36 numthots Oyster Oyster, *, Washington, DC

Recently went to Oyster Oyster, a 1-star restaurant in Washington, DC. The restaurant is relatively small — they only serve parties 4 or smaller, and there were maybe a dozen tables, mostly two-tops.
The restaurant is "oyster-tarian", which is to say, a fully vegetarian restaurant with an optional oyster course. My wife and I don't eat non-fish seafood, so we skipped the oyster, but found the meal delightful.
Personal ranking: 4/5. Food/service exceeded expectations. I'd recommend, go back, but not rush. Examples: El Cielo and Rasika tasting menus in Washington, DC. Because the menu is pretty seasonal, I'd probably choose a late summer or early fall reservation for my next visit.
Service: Service was really wonderful. This is definitely a fast-paced restaurant. Because of the size, there's basically no space between the door and the host stand, we were basically seated immediately. They don't give you the food menu until you're on your way out, and it's a set tasting menu, so food starts pretty immediately after seating and selecting (or not) wines/non-alcoholic beverages. Servers are fairly casual, but kind, knowledgable, and fun. I wouldn't say we felt doted on, but it's also a small enough place that a server is almost always in view. The meal was also quick: we were in and out of there in 90 minutes, despite it being a five course meal. That said, it wasn't rushed — and I don't think their reservations are explicitly stated for 90/120 minutes.
Wine: I'm not a huge wino, but we split the pairing and I honestly really enjoyed the wines! One bubbly, one white, two dinner reds, and a dessert red. The two reds were both unusually light, and we quite liked them. We didn't see the pairing list, but they emailed it to us after our reservation, which was nice. Pairing was $85 pre-tax/pre-tip, with a $15 surcharge for us to split it. Every pour came with an in-depth description of varietal, terroir, winemaker, distillation process, and a "why" Oyster Oyster chose to offer that particular wine.
Food: The food was delicious, and the overall meal was filling but not overwhelmingly so. The meal is light on the protein, which I often look for in a meal, but that honestly wasn't much of an issue night-of.
Would recommend! I think it's gotten significantly easier to get a reservation than in years past, and it was a fun time!
Edit: I apparently don't know how to do a gallery and text.

Is my drosera okay?
Purchased her over the winter so I used a grow light until I could move her to the window to avoid serious freezing risks. Before, she was green and not very dewy. Now that I've moved her I see lots of new growth and beautiful sticky leaves but she's turning red. Is the red trying to tell me something?!
She is in a south facing window and I only use distilled water.
Any helpful tips would be appreciated!

Is the recipe garbage?
Ok bakers, im so confused as to what happened with my cakes. I’ve made red velvet cake before and have never had a cake fall like this. Is there something I’m missing? Followed the recipe and it’s a total fail! From the Kneaders cookbook. Baked for 30 mins. The center wasn’t done sooner than that or I would have pulled them…the edges were crispier…🥴 attempt 2 will be posted. Thanks in advance! Happy baking!!

2024.05.18 18:47 bstabss Why did my nepenthes’ lid turn so brown/brittle looking?

Got this pitcher plant about 10 days ago. Distilled water and probably middling sunlight. It gets about 10 hours indirect and 2 hours fairly bright direct sun per day. The 2 hours of bright direct sun comes on really suddenly due to the positioning of my window. Could the sudden blast of direct light be the cause?

My drosera have been dying back over the past 6 months. Each head will die back from the outside layer, the inside will keep growing but the decay outpaces the new growth and eventually the plant is consumed. What am I doing wrong to cause this?
Substrate is 50/50 peat moss/perlite. Distilled water. Container is 2 plastic shoeboxes with holes drilled in one to allow for water passage. Keeping 1/2in coverage on inner container. Substrate stays very damp. I use this grow light with all 3 colors on

2024.05.18 16:41 SirVertigo2002 Head to Head Review: The Tea on Premier Drams American vs. RC RIO-215.

Head to Head Review: The Tea on Premier Drams American vs. RC RIO-215.

Head to head review: Premier Drams Jack Rose DC American Whiskey vs. t8ke Rare Character RIO-215

Bourbon…from 3 years ago in the depths of the pandemic Vs. a new rye mash, contract distilled at Willett, from Jack Rose.
Why? Well first off, I have my hands on one of the first ever Premier Drams releases. Prestige Ledroit has a long relationship with Willett, and a rather immediate relationship with Bill Thomas owner of Jack Rose and notable champion of American whiskey broadly, dusty whiskey generally, and Willett quite specifically long before it broke big (Iron Glove, Velvet Fist, among many others. I would highlight Trinidad Sour as a recent quintessential release).
I’ve thought to call these “Billett” because they were contract distilled at Willett (using a variety of mash bills) but aged (in this case for 7 years) at castle and key in the famed Warehouse B. This is a very long very old (est. 1912) rickhouse notable for- quoting Pablo Moix, imparting a flavor to whiskey that you will either “love or hate.” That is to say it’s distinctive. It’s a tea note, a raisin quality, a sweetness. All while dropping proof. Something that RIO Rare character releases and the early Premier Drams releases have in common is this precise ware (Rick?) house.

FIRST: RIO-215 RARE CHARACTER:

Mashbill 75% corn 25% rye 4 % malted barley t8ke in his original tasting notes specifies (italicized to emphasize the following is quoted and not from me)
“Year: 2022
Info: Distilled 5/2016, Bottled 1/2022, 75/21/4 Mashbill, 56.76% ABV
Additional Info: Distilled at MGP and aged fully at Castle & Key’s Warehouse B, this barrel matured completely in the stone E.H.Taylor warehouses on the property. Dumped, and bottled at cask strength after 5 years and 8 months of aging. This artwork is my vision of art being created, even while locked away deep in stone. If you’ve ever toured Warehouse B/C at Castle & Key, you know that this warehouse goes on for ever. It’s the longest warehouse still standing and holds more than 50,000 barrels. When the lights aren’t all on, the corridor just disappears into blackness. The dark, dank air can feel crushing. It’s an incredibly cool experience.
Notes: Pure apple pie, brown butter, toffee, honey and cream. Light cola on the back palate, a pleasant oak saturation from nose to finish. Pralines, roasted almonds, a hint of clove and cinnamon, and a long, maple finish.”
Now t8ke is a palate more than respected but the power of suggestion would invite my consideration on the NOSE of an English breakfast tea poured alongside a beautiful almond croissant.
PALATE Coating, agreed on the above nutty and baking spice notes but would say cinnamon raisin. And a long, sensual
FINISH incorporating the earlier oak saturation and adding a bit of loam and bright minerality to what the master saw in his own creation.

SECOND: PREMIER DRAMS AMERICAN WHISKEY

Premier Drams is a once a year whiskey tasting held in the labyrinthian spaces of Jack Rose and the Imperial in Washington, DC, an interconnected warren of rooftop, ground level, and basement bars that collectively amount to 6 or seven distinct drinking spaces with different decor and feel. It is heaven, and I suggest you go if you can. Many of the people directly responsible for distilling or bottling most of what is good in American Whiskey go and bring along special stuff to pour (Single Cask Nation, A. Smith Bowman, Willett, etc.). Recently, a permanent bottle shop opened in the Imperial and that too is called Premier Drams and carries a curated selection of Jack Rose barrel picks along with some interesting whiskeys from every category. It is a bright and happy little place for the serious whiskey nerd and a non threatening place for the whiskey novice since staff are quite knowledgeable and helpful. Now Premier Drams is also lending its name to this brand of independent bottlings. So you could conceivably go to Premier Drams (the bottle shop) during Premier Drams (the event, unsually in the fall) and buy Premier Drams (bottles) and then finally pour said drams (minimum 2, since less than that would just be Premier Dram and you would have to be corporally disciplined for your unnecessary temperance and lack of commitment to a bit) and find them to be enjoyable and premier.
Turning to this American whiskey it appears to be so designated because it is a rye that aged in reused cooperage. I apologize, dear reader, that this only has the force of rumor and I cannot at this time tell you which cooperage. However, I know Mr. Thomas loves Hoffmeister but this could be any reused cooperage. That said- we have a Willett Rye contract distilled for Bill Thomas and aged at Castle and Key Warehouse B- this is (from the label) JACK ROSE DC selection Cask # 20421 Distilled 2016 and Bottled in 2024 at 102.2 proof (51.1%). It is one of 248 bottles in REFILL cooperage from Warehouse B Est. 1912 (interesting they put the construction date of the warehouse on there) where it aged in a rick on the SECOND FLOOR and was made using a Rye Mash. Distilled in Bardstown, Kentucky. Bottled by Castle & Key Distillery, Frankfort, KY. The website PremierDrams.com is listed on the bottle "to learn more aout this bottle, or other Premier Drams releases, please visit..." but bemusingly this takes me to a godaddy landing page (uh oh).
Mashbill is not specified on the bottle, but presumably it is the high rye mash from Willett (74% rye, 11% corn, 15% malted barley) unless its the low rye (51% rye, 34% corn, 15% malted barley). It doesn't have the "feel" of the latter to me but I'll edit if I learn more in the future (i.e. was there a custom mashbill as part of the contract distilling.)
NOSE distinctive insane powdered Lipton tea with lemon note. Elegant- bright, perfect for summer. What in the bourbon from rare character had a richness, here there is sunshine. Fresh cut green stems of honeysuckle perhaps.
PALATE Gorgeous, coating mouthfeel but not viscous. Nice integration of that bright iced tea nose into a refreshing, sharp, citrusy and floral and slightly tannic but juicy palate. Oranges dance in the breeze.
FINISH Medium to long and my my god you are in seersucker, sipping a gorgeous iced tea while watching one of the triple crown races. In my case it’s the Preakness, and that tea note has come back. It is striking in a rye, sweet and raisin-y in the complementing bourbon. The baking spices and lingering tobacco hum along in the background as you hum to yourself.
Both of these are lovely. At the time this bourbon was 80 bucks. The artwork is beautiful. It captured a dark moment in America but an inflection point for bourbon. The Premier Drams rye has a classic, almost retro feel to the artwork, and the bottle tries to tell you as much as is legally possible about the liquid inside. Kudos to the company for the commitment to transparency. I know comparing a Rye to a Bourbon is a bit odd but it really speaks to the assertiveness of Castle and Key Warehouse B in imparting a distinctive flavor profile to whiskeys aged there regardless of mash or brand (I believe Wild Turkey rents some space in this place as well and may have keep Masters Keep 2017 barrels there).
Premier Drams is a new brand I think no one knows what to make of. It can’t trade off of Willett per se- or Bill Thomas’ very experienced palate- but I will say this: cask strength single barrels of unique and assertive quality have defined my early tasting (of about 7-10 offerings). They are distinctive, in that they are unlike most of what I have ever tasted before, but then that makes them somewhat unique and difficult to invite comparison. Sorry that I had to reach to a rather obscure Rare Character to find that comparator- but they have all been objectively good. I think the internet reviewer landscape will find itself divided into camps on these
I’d guide my dear readers on this- my first ever review but far from my first dram- to their wheated mash bill offerings and any of their ryes. This particular whiskey will prove elusive, but worth it if you can get it (in the 2-3 hundo range). I believe Seelbach's has two offerings (neither of which are reviewed here). I'll be interested to see how other's review it, but these initial rye barrels are striking for that sweet iced tea note which I think Warehouse B and Willett have brought forth in spades.
Cheers TC

2024.05.18 03:09 Rad_Pilgrim Yellow & Brown Spots/Stripes?

Yellow & Brown Spots/Stripes?
My plant was doing great for awhile, and about 5 weeks ago this brown spotting/striping started. I’m not sure what caused it. I have this sitting on a windowsill that gets about 10 hours of direct sunlight. I also have a grow light from Amazon that I use every other day. It’s potted in plastic with carnivorous plant soil, a bottom reservoir waters it on it’s own and I only use distilled water. The only thing I can think of is that when my mom stayed with us for a couple weeks, she watered it twice with tap water not knowing it needs distilled or rain water only. It is still growing new traps like crazy, but they wind up yellowing/browning like this when they get bigger. It was doing that even before the grow light, so I don’t think it’s burned. I’m also still figuring out the grow light settings for my plant.

Review #1: Talisker Special Release 2023 - The Wild Explorador
This is my 1st review ever and I wanted to share a bottle that was gifted to me by my dad. A Diageo NAS special release usually wouldn’t be something I splurge on but this was a thoroughly enjoyable dram. I love Talisker’s profile and the 10 is one of my regular drams.
Stats Age: NAS ABV: 59.7% Chill filtered: not sure I couldn’t find out Natural color: I would guess not but again not sure.
Nose: The first notes I got were fresh green apples and peat smoke. I also got caramel and a hint of vinegar.
Palate: I get the signature Talisker pepper first. Followed by light peat smoke and cream. I also tasted cream and red wine vinegar. It definitely had some heat being bottled at 59.7%.
Finish: I got a warm finish with salt, pepper, kelp and smoke.
My rating: 80/100
It’s something I’d never turn down if offered to me. I’ve loved every Talisker that I’ve tried. I enjoyed the Distiller’s edition a lot more and the 10 a bit more but this is such a solid dram.
Scoring Legend:
95-100: The literal Nectar of the gods. Unique, complex, tasty. 90-94: One of the elite drams, worthy of the finest occasions 85-89: Wonderful, will always try to pick up 80-84: The good stuff, super solid dram 75-79: pretty good, it’s worth trying 70-74: Drinkable but not special 60-69: Not that good or not my taste at all 50-59: Okay as a mixer not to sip 0-49: Horrid

Review #51 (Scotch Review #7) - Bruichladdich The Laddie Eight

Bruichladdich The Laddie Eight

Eight Years Old

50% alc./vol

~1/2 full

Neat, Glencairn

Background - Here we travel retail exclusive, graciously provided to me by a friend who was traveling through Dublin. Bruichladdich has a ton of info on this whisky as well as the more widely available Classic Laddie. The main difference is that the Laddie Eight is a slightly smaller batch with fewer vintages and cask types. So, less variety in the blend, but perhaps more variability between batches. That said, I couldn't find why this version is age stated and the Classic is not. Eight years is "young" in the world of Scotch, but many distilleries have proven that they can produce a fine product from younger distillates. Let's dive in and see how this one does.
Nose - Not very complex. Oddly lacking. It's not unpleasant but not offering much. I can pick up some honey and peaches supporting a strong barley overtone. Sitting with it and taking a couple sips, I'm able to pick up some sweetesavory notes such as stewed fruit and figs. It leans pretty heavily into the malty side of the spectrum but there's a lot of good to be had there.
Palate - Moderately thick mouthfeel. The Barley quality makes itself apparent in the form of bran. It takes a few sips for the flavors to pop. The bran flavor remains at the forefront but there's lots of cooked/stewed fruit here - apricot, peaches, apples. They play with the grainy notes very well. There's also a light vegetative note akin to fresh cut grass and moss. I wouldn't necessarily call it tasty, but it's fun to unpack and unusual.
Finish - Smooth, very tannic finish. Contrasting the grainy and fruity profile from the palate, the finish is very woody, think sandalwood and coconut stick. There isn't much warmth and the flavors do dissipate rather quickly, so there's a bit to be desired here. But the flavors are great.
Thoughts - This is an unusual dram but a blast to unpack. It took me a number of sips to even start placing tasting notes. But, once I started getting it, the different/unusual notes to be found came like an avalanche. This isn't something I'd give to someone that doesn't have a lot of experience with sipping spirits. Something more for the enthusiast. Ultimately, it's a very good whisky and another in a long line of examples of why Bruichladdich are among the best in the business.
Rating - 4/5
1 - Mixing-Only
2 - Decent
3 - Above Average
4 - Very Good
5 - Exceptional

2024.05.17 18:48 Jollijulie Pinguicula help - what is going on?

This ping has been like this since November. I’m in the south central US and spring has pretty much turned into summer but this guy hasn’t bounced back - I’m wondering if I did something wrong? I have two other pings - one is like the day I got it (I got all of these September 2023), and the other has ended up with shortened leaves too but profusely flowering. They’ve all been under grow lights with consistent temp/humidity, distilled water. This one has been allowed to dry out, then I thought I should water it again so it went a couple weeks with water and now I haven’t watered it in a couple weeks thinking I need to be treating like succulent stage - I’ve been about this since January …I’m really at a loss!

2024.05.17 06:30 blue_ella A guide into GLYCERIN/GLYCEROL/GLYCERINE for skin and hair

Please know, I am a regular human, just like you. I am not a specialist, doctor, or a scientist of any kind. I have spent over 2 years in writing this (post has been in my drafts and I worked on it in my free time only.) I have talked about using glycerin and the changes I have seen on my own body many times on here and I always received comments from someone wanting more information on glycerin which is not easily available. (I think it's because of how cheap it is and how its the top ingredient in many products we use, companies don't want us to know lol.) My sources are from medical/universal research libraries that I have access to from my university. Still, research papers are very complicated to understand and takes a long time to get through the whole study so if I made a mistake in comprehending anything, please let me know. Lets begin :)
This product/poly compound does have many names/spellings but I'll be sticking to glycerin. Glycerin is used in vast variety of products like medicine/wound care, food industry, hygiene products including soaps, skincare, hair care and more. Glycerin is stable, nontoxic, non irritating and hypoallergenic with antibacterial effects. Because of these properties it is said that about 20% of all glycerin is used in our territory (makeup, skincare, hygiene) which is a very large portion. Glycerin is also fairly cheap so you can see it in the top 10-15% of the ingredient list (especially in products that promote hydration) or towards the bottom 25% in preventative products.
Glycerin has many benefits. You can look at luxury creams to affordable face wash products and chances are, you will see glycerin in it. Some skincare companies now include a directory on their website to explain what each ingredient does and benefit on the skin but I feel it is very vague and wanted to bring some science to this poly compound. Now the accredited and certified research papers I found available to me are limited on its effect on the skin of humans but are on animals with some following up on humans. I was hoping to include links and incorporate wording however it was too cruel so I will summarize.
The vast amount of information available is on, if glycerin is a safe product, its effects to our (human) tissues, and possible illness/diseases scientists believed it can cause or be linked to. Like I said, I'll keep the animal testing gory out but to wrap it all up, glycerin is safe. It did not have any effect on the reproductive system for males or females and is not carcinogenic to humans. In a different study, a group of 25 human volunteers (22 male 3 female) were tested orally which resulted in no change in weight of humans if under 50 with or without diabetes, unless over 50 with diabetes history it caused some jittery behavior in one human (this experiment was conducted orally and used 3x a day.) Researchers checked the sperm of males and saw no abnormalities comparing it to when they first came in. For the females, ultrasound showed no abnormalities on their reproductive health. It should be noted, the researchers did not compare anything regarding glycerin and its effect on the thyroid but the other organs tested no abnormalities were found. I also found several studies on inhalation and applying glycerin on eyes was normal in sense nothing will happen other than some irritation that subsides, on animals. Same study then compared their findings on a group of humans and only a couple of people from the testing group reported it caused mild or moderate irritation that lasted for little while. To conclude, there are no known side effects or illness caused or linked to by usage of glycerin. Still, after immense testing it is recommended to patch test glycerin even if being allergic to glycerin is considered rare according to researchers.
In skin/hair care, glycerin is a humectant (retaining or preserving moisture) and an emollient (quality of softening or smoothing of the skin). Meaning a moisturizing agent that draws water to the surface of the dermis from the atmosphere or from layers deep in your skin/hair; brighten and soften the dermis and hair at the same time This said, using glycerin in low humidity or dry, hot air can result in drying out your dermis (skin) or hair, including the scalp because it is pulling moisture deep in your dermis or hair. (Personal note: if you wish to use glycerin in locations or seasons where the air is dry, it is best to keep spritzing the area with a mist of just water, preferably distilled, or other hydration mist to prevent the glycerin pulling any to all moisture from your dermis which could result in flaky, dry skin or brassy, frizzy hair strands. I believe after immense research this is the only downside of glycerin).
Glycerin is also considered as a thickener for products and is mildly antibacterial and antiviral. Glycerin was originally found from lipids of animals (animal fat) but now can be extracted from plants (vegan) like shea butter, palm oil, coconut oil and more. As of today, glycerin from oil has a high extraction rate from palm. Glycerin can also be formed synthetically through fermentation, bio-diesel or chemically created with its chemical compound ( C3H8O3; Carbon 3 Hydrogen 8 Oxygen 3) (Personal note: I am including this because when purchasing you glycerin, be sure on where and how it was extracted as you will be applying it on your dermis or hair.) Glycerin is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog your pores, but reading the different studies I believe there is a difference between lab, plant, and animal lipid created glycerin. Some prefer the animal glycerin as its more suitable to their skin type but majority of the glycerin in our market is from plants or lab. You can tell the difference of glycerin by how tacky it is. Animal glycerin is most tacky (sticky like tree sap) compared to the plant glycerin followed by lab created which only has a slight slip to it.
The density of glycerin (1.26g/cm^3) is lower than the density of our skin(1.1g/cm^3) which allows glycerin to penetrate deeper than a lot of other products. Whereas hyaluronic acid (varies but avg. density is around 1.8g/cm^3) may look to be better way to go around but both have their benefits! Glycerin is better suitable when you want your skin or scalp to hold moisture on your skin. HA is suitable if you want to lock in the moisture. But what makes them very different is the molecular level. Glycerin has a smaller molecular level than HA, which in return allows the glycerin to saturate deeper in your dermis or hair strands whereas HA sits on the top 2 layers (about). So using HA on your skin can mean it can take longer to see the visual results on your skin. That said with either or, consistency is important to unlock all the benefits either product can offer.
Glycerin is beneficial to all skin types, most hair types, and help aid in various skin or scalp conditions (if you have a medical condition please consult a doctor or dermatologist.) From brightening the dermis by help healing old scars and smoothing out hyperpigmentation, to being a natural prevention of many skin imperfections glycerin is the most underrated, versatile, and affordable product all should have in their cupboards. Glycerin will hold onto the water keeping your face soft and smooth (like a newborn babies bum) for long periods of time. (On study showed if glycerin is not washed from the dermis or hair, glycerin can last upto 6 days on the area applied hydrating the top layer of skin. In this study the researchers had 3 groups, 1 controlled, 1 glycerin applied only(group1), 1 glycerin applied with misting water every 6 hours(group2) for 14 days. From control- the group had natural oil build up, group1 had dry almost chapped skin, group2 felt dry to touch, some shine-no oil, bounce on dermis.) It is not recommended to keep glycerin on for this long as glycerin can attract pollutants from settling into pores-it just sits on surface of skin.
In the process of applying glycerin consistently, it will boost collagen production, even out your skin tone from blemishes to hyperpigmentation, aiding in the prevention of acne bacteria spreading on your dermis (help with clearing back acne), clearing and hydrating pores for the prevention of black or white heads, smooth skin texture and premature aging lines. Glycerin may act as a mild natural sunscreen by protecting the skin from the sun's rays and environmental pollutants, including smog. For acne, glycerin can help prevent the bacteria from spreading and help heal and smooth old acne spots. On large open pores, because of its density, glycerin can settle into pores reducing the visual size of them and help clear out any dirt or imperfections.
Glycerin on your scalp can be a natural/soft treatment for dandruff or other scalp dryness. For your hair strands, mixing it with our ayurvedic hair masks or hair oil, you can condition any damaged hair strands, preventing further breakage (split ends), and adding strength to protect against harmful rays of the sun and hot tools. The benefits of glycerin on our bodies are endless but here are a couple other ways to include glycerin when in a pinch.
Remember we discussed how glycerin is a humectant, emollient, and thickener? Well, this is what many of us expect from a makeup primer. I have used a glycerin primer for when I wanted a quick everyday makeup look or when I misplaced my holy grail benefit POREfessional primer. I used it in 2 ways, One was mixing a drop of glycerin into my moisturizer or my foundation. The other was my standard rose water and glycerin spray bottle. With the rose water I did notice I had to make sure the water and glycerin was well set into my face. I use a damp sponge to press any glycerin sitting on my face deep into my pores before applying foundation to avoid any separation or caking. (If you want an airbrush look; try this method then after dabbing your face with the sponge, apply a thin, even layer of finely milled translucent powder.) Why you may ask do this extra step of dabbing? Well using glycerin in a liquid format like the rose water is also an effective makeup remover! Crazy how it can work both ways.
If you pull out any micellar water you may have, the first 2 ingredients are water and glycerin followed by additives to act as mild surfactants and unwanted possible ingredients alcohol, fragrance, preservatives. Surfactant is a substance that will help the water and glycerin chemical properties mix when dissolved together. Sometimes when you let the micellar water sit you see a layer of liquid settle on top of another layer and you have to mix the two, right? The surfactant is the ingredient that leaves that oily feel on the face and I believe blends the glycerin chemical with the surfactant to create a less tacky formula. It will be different brand to brand based on how they source their glycerin and the ratios. That said, after my full beat, spraying a setting spray and all, I experimented to see how the rose wateglycerin will react with my full face of makeup if I just wanted to rehydrate my face with the same mixture. I spray till my face feels nicely hydrated, let that fully dry with help of a fan or my hands, then with a dry sponge, I lightly tap the glycerin back into my dermis and if needed, powder to set any makeup separation or fading.
The only time I dealt with makeup reacting with the glycerin was when my makeup began pilling from mixing silicone and water based skincare products with foundation.
From my journey: I saw some posts of users using and not having benefactual results so I'd like to inform you how I personally started using glycerin and the changes on my own skin. I remember stumbling on a random Instagram account of Farah Dhukai from Farsali using glycerin back in 2016 and I decided to copy the recipe to lighten dark skin. After following her instructions and started to use her recipes very often, it was not long before I had all family reunions turn into skincare nights. I would make custom masks for my cousins and aunts based on their skin concerns and I would receive endless compliments and discussions on how my skin as a 15 year old teenager looked amazing. It was not long until I connected the dots and started researching extensively into glycerin.
At that time, I didn't even have access to these studies and research papers, many were released after 2016! I found another ayurvedic Instagram account (now deactivated) and found my first recipe for rose water and glycerin and we have been going strong ever since. I started off with about 1 cup of fresh/homemade rose water to 1 tablespoon of glycerin. I originally started using this as a toner. I suffer from acanthosis nigricans (thickedry/dark skin on back of neck, elbows, armpits, knees) I would drench a cotton pad and hold the serum onto my skin for 5 seconds before moving it. I would repeat this then go over the same parts on my skin in circular motions. After about 4-6 months I had reduced the appearance on my elbows and knees to about 90% (only small dryness patch was left) my neck still had the thickness of skin but the darkness had reduced significantly and started blending in with my natural skin. Armpits were about 40% lighter but after a year of consistent use I was very happy with my results. Now it is important to mention, skin care can only carry so much; during this time of using the toner I lost about 23 kgs which helped clear the inflammation causing the dark skin in the first place.
Along with this toner I only used a light moisturizer and face wash; no SPF, facial scrubs, or actives. My skin was very clear, bright, hyperpigmentation free. Then life hit me with a ton of bricks and depression set in. I gave up skincare and my skin was terrible. Pores, pigmentation, fungal acne and stubborn blackheads on forehead and chin, extremely flaky/irritated cheeks. At this point I had been using glycerin for over 3-4 years so I upped the ratio I mix about 1:4 ratio of glycerin to rosewater now and put it in a spray bottle. I would start by double cleanse my face, use vitamin C serum and drench my face with the glycerin water before bedtime daily (about 1-2 hours before) let it settle then use my fingers to give myself a soft facial massage and help the remaining dripping water settle into my skin or slide it down my neck and chest. Then before bedtime, I splash my face with just cool water and remove the glycerin sitting on top of my skin. Gently dry my face and apply my nightly moisturizer with retinol, let that settle then spray 4x of the glycerin water again, finish with some lip mask and go to sleep.
From researching and experimenting, this was best way to clear out my white/black heads. The glycerin made them soft and I did not have to include any active or harsh scrubs or facial tools to pick them out. I found mixing the vitamin C with the glycerin 2 hours before helped tremendously with my hyperpigmentation and left my face glowing and added a beautiful bounce! I now only use a soft facial scrub that was marked to be safe for daily use once a week only. In the mornings, I thoroughly wash your face with some cleanser and apply a light moisturizer and SPF. My skin has gotten significantly brighter and has the glass skin effect without using multiple actives and products. Reason I don't apply it the rosewater glycerin in morning is because we are having dry weather and my schedule is unpredictable to remember to spray a hydrating spray in between wear.
For my scalp psoriasis, I used the same toner product just in different ratios and it helped significantly. Only thing about glycerin and your scalp/hair strands is you do not want to dry it out. I only kept it on for about 30 minutes before I shower. I do have thin/pin-straight hair but my ends just felt so much healthier. One research entry mentioned how glycerin was very benefactural to animals with dense fur. So if you have textured(wavy/curly) or coarse(thick) hair definitely try glycerin out on yourself! Im sure it will help your curls be more defined and healthy! Glycerin helps strengthen the hair follicles and strands to prevent breakage, leading to the illusion of faster-longer growing hair. (I have to trim my hair about 3x a year. Each time I trim about 4 inches off. Sometimes I mix the glycerin and rose water in my hair oil concoctions. I feel this allows the oil to penetrate in even deeper. The oil doesn't sit on the stands but absorbs faster which I always struggled with. It leaves my hair so soft/supple, helps my brittle ends when I'm past due for a trim or from heat damage. In the case I add the glycerin into the oil and I wish to keep the oil on longer, I spray my hair with regular distilled water only to keep the moisture constant for the glycerin so it doesn't suck the water out of the strands.
Here are a couple ratios you can start to experiment with:
NOTES: If you believe glycerin and rosewater is not the combination for you, you can mix glycerin with aloe, powders/herbs, moisturizers, and more. Be sure to research the product you will be mixing with and always patch test to ensure a chemical change will not take negative effect on your skin. Reason why I mix with rosewater is because when mixing with other products, remember glycerin is also a thickener, so it can feel very heavy on the face. Whereas water dilutes it and feels comfortable to wear for all day or night.
NOTES: I know my oily and acne girls are always fighting for their life. If you try this and are struggling, keep adjusting the formula and trust the process. It may feel nothing is happening or too much is happening but if you can, stay consistent for 6 weeks before you call it quits.
NOTES: ( NSFW but IMPORTANT!) Please do not apply glycerin on or near your genitalia! Glycerin is a type of carbohydrate known as a sugar alcohol. The breakdown of glycerin with our natural bacteria will turn it into an irritant creating a risk of a yeast infection!

2024.05.17 04:37 CareForYourHealth Colonoscopy helps detect and prevent colorectal cancer. Don't avoid it. Ask anyone who has experienced or cared for someone with colon cancer. Share your experience before, during, and after the procedure to help others feel comfortable. Follow your doctor's guidelines and ask them questions.

Feel free to share your experiences. My experience is below. More details than necessary, but hopefully, it brings some comfort and relieves nervousness for those going through it their first time as many of the posts here did for me. Note your prep maybe different per your doctor's guidelines
About me (for context): 37F, Height: 5' 1", Weight: 114 lbs
Reason for checkup: Family History of Colon Cancer (after I scheduled, I also had an incident of blood in stool on one occasion)
Pre-Procedure Medication/Supplement/Diet: 4 days before - all medication and supplements stopped. 3 days before - went grocery shopping for low-fiber foods. Low-fiber diet of 2 boiled eggs, crackers, milk, cheese, chicken, 2 sandwiches - white bread with 1 turkey slice, small amount cinnamon stick. 2 days before - Picked up Golytely from pharmacy. Low-fiber diet of milk, 2 sandwiches - white bread with 1.5 turkey slice, 2 boiled eggs, apple without skin, cheese, small amount cinnamon stick. 1 day before (midnight to 4 pm) - liquid diet of 1 cup apple juice x 2 and unsalted chicken broth x 2 (added a little salt later, haha).
Pre-Procedure Clearing Bowels: 4 pm - prepared Golytely solution by adding 4 liters of distilled water to a jug and refrigerating it. 6 pm until 8 pm - started by drinking half an 8 oz cup every 15 minutes, licking a cold lemon slice before and after. Used a straw for 3 cups, then switched to drinking directly from the cup. The first bowel movement (use wipes) occurred at 7 pm and continued until 8:30 PM. (originally brownish by end was cloudy yellow with smaller chunks/particles). Took a shower. 10 pm to 12:30 am - started drinking second half one 8 oz cup every 20 minutes as I got nauseated. The lemon helped me get through it. The last bowel movement was around 1 am. was faster (started cloudy yellow with more chunks/particles and by end was clear yellow and no visible particles). 1:30 AM to 4 am - slept. Had 1 bowel movements after waking up and another after an hour later. Not much though and it was little lighter and clearer each time.
Pre-Procedure Clinic (Note that the clinic had a waiting room board displaying admission check-in, pre-op, ready for op, in op, and post-op times for each patient by initials): 6:40 am - arrived early due to ride. Checked in with ID and insurance card. Filled in several paperwork. 7:30 am - admission paperwork was submitted. 8:25 am - Had another very small bowel movement. 8:40 am - Pre-Op in middle area with curtains. Pre-Procedure nurse asked about any allergies and had me sign papers on blood transfusion and sedation by propofol. Then she sent me to the bathroom with a cup to get a urine sample (left on the back of the toilet) and a bag with a gown to change into (could keep socks and shoes on. I opted to keep socks on and take off shoes) with opening facing back. Then, I was directed to bed, where I was instructed to sit with bare bottom on white cloth. My clothes and shoes were placed under bed. Regular vitals we taken, pre-questionnaire (doctor came midway to ask if I had any questions and said he was heading to op for other patient), nurse went over any questions I had, placed 3 electrode patches (left wrist, left upper arm, right upper arm), and placed needle for propofol. Then she left me with lights off so it wasn't in my eyes until the next nurse came. 9:15 am - Ready for op. Intra-Procedure nurse. Arranged all my paperwork, the ones I had signed before. Checked blood pressure. Went over details of what was to happen and things I should do afterward. Asked if I had any questions. Then, he moved me to the procedure room.
Procedure Clinic (according to the report, my preparation was good and only stage 1 internal hemorrhoid found): 9:27 am - In op. Intra-procedure nurse, GI tech, nurse anesthetist, and doctor in room. Amongst themselves, they verified my name and date of birth. Meanwhile, they quickly connected electrodes while telling me things. Then, the doctor asked me to share what my name meant. Stating how names in my culture have meanings. Then he said he would talk to me after the procedure. Then they started the propofol, 9:28 am - started anesthesia***, 9:30 am -*** pre-procedure time-out where the doctor and nurses verify the patient and procedure again, 9:32 am - scope inserted, 9:36 am - cecum reached, 9:43 am - scope withdrawn, 9:44 am - out of procedure room and back in middle area
Post Procedure: 9:45 to 10:18 am - Had a nice nap, a strange but peaceful dream, and woke up passing gas within seconds. Noted the time on a computer next to me. 10:19 am - The intra-procedure nurse checked if I passed gas and instructed me to get dressed in bed. Then doctor quickly confirmed I was clear with no polyps and left. The nurse returned with a wheelchair and had me sit in it. Then reviewed information, mentioned I would be contacted in two weeks, answered my questions, gave me water, and handed me my reports. 10:25 am - Took me to the car, where my ride and guardian signed my release paperwork.
After getting home Half an hour later I was home. Ate some food within half hour or so. Started eating a high fiber diet normally without spices. Had a nice sleep. So, far ok. Shall see tomorrow.

NST depotting - diesel dissolves tar (day 1)
Didn't use a more aggressive solvent as hopefully fuel diesel can't desolve the enamel insulation, like more aggressive petroleum distillates, also cheap. One day after immerseing half an inch of the tar is soft as cream.

2024.05.17 03:36 jjf189 Dracaena dying

Dracaena dying
Hello! I’m so sad to say I’m somehow killing my dracaena. I only use distilled water to give her a drink when the soil gets pretty dry. Ive tried less light, and now more light (by a south facing window).
I paid too much for her and I want to revive it! Despite these leaves browning, it is just that one area and there are still new leaves sprouting out of the top.
Any advice please? Thank you 🫶🏼

2024.05.17 03:07 no_sleep2nite The day has finally arrived

The day has finally arrived
Picked up Recognition and Fusilade II at my local SiteOne. When used together, the combo will safely kill/control Bermuda grass in St Augustine and Zoysia, although stunting can be expected. I’ve been patiently waiting for this to be available since it was announced. My plan is to fertilize and increase watering to get the Bermuda patches blooming and the St Aug stronger, then I’ll hit it with the herbicides. It will be interesting to see how much kill I’ll get with the first app and how many repeat apps are needed. I have to admit, I was pretty excited to see Recognition finally in stock.

Review #19: Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition 2016 Release
I not only got a great pour here but an even better story. I had heard the name Al Young before like most of you but wasn’t too familiar with the history of Four Roses. The story goes that in 2017, Al came to this bar while in Chicago and had a pour of this here at Slightly Toasted and signed the bottle while he was here. Thanks to u/ambulocetus_ for picking this for me, otherwise I honestly would have gone for the Willett! Really glad I was able to try this one thanks to your recommendation. This is a blend of a 12 year OESO, 12 year OBSV, and 16 year OESK.
Nose: deep, rich cinammon sugar scent here, some gingerbread, a little rye spice, but also more ethanol than I’d really want. Coming in at 111.2 proof, you can sense that on the nose but it’s not overpowering.
Palate: an initial peppery/spicy note followed up by a little sour apple, maybe some grape?, plum, and honey brown sugar at the back. Pretty fruity/floral flavors here. Very unique profile unlike anything I’ve tried before.
Finish: long lasting floral honey notes that keep going strong for a minute. Similar to THH but more focused on the honey notes. Pretty powerful flavor.
Rating 10/10
Not surprised that this was an incredibly flavorful and unique pour. Though the nose isn’t my favorite that incredible palate is something I have never experienced but absolutely love. Especially for a bottle that’s been open many years, this retains all the flavors it likely had new and wasn’t oxidized. I absolutely love it!

Dense crumb and no structure
This is my 5th loaf and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Although the bread tastes incredible, the crumb is still dense and the bread has no structure/little to no oven spring. When I take it out of the banneton onto parchment paper to bake it just puddles out. Please help!!
Recipe for two loaves:
700 g bread flour
200g whole wheat flour
100g rye flour
200 g starter
750g distilled water
20g fine salt
  • combine flours and water and autolyze for 1 hour
  • add starter and combine with lobster claw method
  • add salt, combine, rest for 10 minutes
  • mix for 10-12 minutes with coil folds until it passes the windowpane test
  • bulk fermentation (in my oven with the light on): fold every hour - I did 3 sets of stretch and folds and 4 sets of coil folds
  • total bulk of 8 hours until doubled (I used the aliquot jar method)
  • Shaping: split into two loaves, one set of stretch and folds, flip seam side down and rest for 10 minutes. Gently pull dough into a rectangle, fold sides in, and roll up like a jelly roll. Flip seam side down into banneton. Cover with plastic wrap
  • Cold proof for 12 hours
  • Score and bake at 500F in preheated dutch ovens. Covered for 20 minutes and uncovered for 30.
