This is even bleaker than I thought it’d be. These sandwiches are on par with what I whip up in my kitchen at home when I have 10 minutes in between meetings. 🫣

2024.05.16 04:03 unclaimdusernamehere Eating with allergies

My spouse has a pretty severe peanut and tree nut allergy, to the point where he can't eat if there's a possibility of cross contamination and I can't eat anything that contains or may contain the allergens. I'm always trying to find allergy related info for what we can eat in the parks and Disney Springs/Downtown Disney. We just completed our very first trip to Disneyland. I will say at Disneyland it was much harder to find foods to eat than at Disney World; a lot of mobile order didn't include any allergy options or didn't include much beyond basic burgers and chicken tenders. I know the advice given is usually to "just ask a cast member!" A lot of time was wasted waiting in lines to be told that the food was not safe for us.
Anyway, here's what we ate that was peanut/treenut safe:
Via Mobile Order- Pasta at Alien Pizza Planet. Grilled cheese and tomato soup at Jolly Holiday.
Via asking Cast Members- Ronto wraps from Ronto Roasters. Lobster nachos from Lamplight Lounge. Breakfast sandwich and breakfast burrito from Smoke Jumpers Grill. Regular pineapple Dole Whip from Tropical Hideaway. Pizza from Napolini Pizzeria in Downtown Disney. We didn't actually eat anything but I did ask at Bengal Barbeque and they said the food would be safe.
I also had the waffle monte cristo sandwhich from Royal Veranda and a churro from the Tomorrowland churro cart but they did state there was a possibility of cross contamination.
What we found out we could NOT eat safely- Cozy Cones as they have cross contamination with the ice cream toppings. Corn dogs from Corndog Castle as the batter may contain peanut/treenut allergens. I also looked into a few items exlusive to the Star Wars after hours event, the Duel of the Sliders and the specialy Dole Whip were not safe.
We wasted probably an hour in total walking to different locations and waiting in line. I hope this helps others with these specific allergies find some good food in and around the parks. If anyone wants to be super awesome and wait in line to find out if the beignets are peanut/treenut safe and let me know I would be forever greatful!

2024.05.12 22:20 KAWAIIDUKE L'Effervescence (***) in Nishiazabu, Tokyo

Amazing meal from start to finish. The meal itself as explained by GM Takaaki-san is based in Kaiseki tradition but with a sort of French lens.
https://preview.redd.it/ehi4kd9b020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34d0072b39429ba4b4d6aa7b5739bb4a929fceab
https://preview.redd.it/674bkntc020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edae896ab51d0382a869229563ad380267173939
https://preview.redd.it/b0l3ygsd020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cee947b17038137476f5983d19fecc1f9f9fe3f1
The meal started with a cocktail, vegetable crisps and a tofu sour cream. Already off to a great start. The sour cream was nicely tart and played well with the vegetable crisps while the cocktail helped reset the palate. The sour cream would come into play later as it would become the replacement for butter compared to other dining experiences with bread service.
https://preview.redd.it/jxz4cjca020d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba81c4db646500bfe6e33172e9055f1b3e6e7981

Next up is a clam risotto with boton ebi, solieria pacifica seaweed, peas and caviar. Again, great dish with interplay between hot and cold. The rice is what you would expect from risotto, but it sort of reminded me of Japanese congee.
https://preview.redd.it/j7tjpimf020d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=346abeac2afe30cd8d611475114f515302a71c61
Salad is up next. It's a garden salad - some parts seemed to be raw while others have been just lightly cooked then shocked in ice water. There was a salt that was interspaced throughout the dish. Floral, hints of acid, and some pepperiness make for another good dish.
https://preview.redd.it/z8ywduoh020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a38caa210f2ad8d62a5da3194470eb995dfe0c8
Then, the turnip dish that everyone talks about when they think of L'Effervescence. I honestly had my expectations low, but I'm glad that they actually crushed it. I never knew how good a turnip could taste. It was nicely charred and as you bite into it, natural sweetness from the turnip comes out. Parsley sauce and small bits of biroche make for interesting flavor and texture combinations.
https://preview.redd.it/qxd585ri020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b18ff0eaa438a0c34045a1d3e2911513e16b198
Poached long-tooth groupeKue is up next. This time it's with sansai/mountain vegetables and a sabayon sauce. The bitterness of the sansai and richness of the sabayon interplayed well.
https://preview.redd.it/q94ihqyj020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=12f9b581f9475509054927e11ad945cf724e6ec6
I messed up here. In my eagerness to dive into the next dish, I cut off the asparagus tips before I remembered to take a picture (still beating myself up for that). The main is wood-fired duck breast with red wine sauce and asparagus. Duck was cooked to a nice medium rare and they crushed the sauce work for both the asparagus and red wine sauce.
https://preview.redd.it/vly4ia2m020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2da7178b0ce0aab7de2eeba6de948fb0fcad988
Following the main is duck thigh ravioli with butterbur sprouts/fukinoto in a duck consomme. A nice way to close out the savory dishes.
https://preview.redd.it/m198a3an020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cd0703fdd4863f6a87a4c51a7cf49fa2a14a946
Next up is cheese. These cheeses are from different parts of Japan, so I just ended up picking all of them.
https://preview.redd.it/u7iobn8o020d1.jpg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=099c6a22ca075d427e168a539219c856108f4b7d
For the dessert, a strawberry dessert. Tochiaika straberries, "sakura" cheese mousse, apricot-stone ice cream, white chocolate and herbs. Probably the most photogenic dessert that I've seen yet. Hate to use the cliche, but I really didn't want to destroy this work of art. The strawberries offered a nice sweet tartness with the mousse and ice cream, while the herbs sort of gave it a bit of savoriness.
https://preview.redd.it/aqf6asdp020d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b053ef055344ed6e841b24778a7f9dd0b5632d8f
Then, the petit fours, or in this case, petit sixes. Bergamot and chamomile chous, peanut financier, hazelnut mont blanc, japanese mugwort mochi, kumquat and nigori-sake crystal, chocolate and dry ginger cracker.
https://preview.redd.it/bjku319q020d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b92ec498e3aff34b72d915b741ebc20cb33c31a
To end it all, a special drink called "world peace" and matcha - a fitting end.
https://preview.redd.it/y2ak2a3r020d1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13aa3fd87bcfb05a1e59f2d71a53b248a0d8a054

2024.05.12 19:32 Tallsallybrown WDW food review 5/5-5/11

WDW food review 5/5-5/11
I really enjoyed reading everyone’s food reviews and tips before my trip so thought I’d add mine here in case it’s of interest to anyone! As you would expect, these scores are completely subjective - my taste may be different to yours so take what you read with a pinch of salt. I did end up choosing quite a lot of these items based on other people’s recommendations but some of my favourites were the ones I tried off the cuff.
  1. Bison Burger - Geyser Point, Wilderness Lodge - 9/10 Great start to the holiday. Delicious burger, soft bun, mountains of fries. The wait for a table was long so we sat at the bar and got served immediately. Great relaxing ambience and it was a good call to leave the park during the midday heat/rush - we used this tactic for most of our park days.
  2. Cobb Salad/Filet Mignon - Hollywood Brown Derby, Hollywood Studios - 7/10 (CS) 7.5 (FM) I think I read and heard too many positive reviews of the Cobb Salad and would have enjoyed it more if I’d just picked it myself without the knowing the hype. I was whelmed. If I got it again I’d get dressing and blue cheese on the side as those are the strongest flavours. Husband liked the steak but wasn’t blown away. We did this for the Fantasmic package and that was so worth it.
  3. Taster Platter, Hummus Fries, Pomegranate-Chili Crispy Cauliflower - Spice Road Table, Epcot - 8/10 We didn’t originally intend to eat here but the heat really got us and the lure of the AC was too strong to resist. I’m glad we stopped here though, we got a lovely table by the window looking at the water. The cauliflower was a surprising hit. The hummus fries were basically falafel and the sampler was a good choice for trying a few of the other options.
  4. Pulled Pork with a side of Mac and Cheese - Regal Eagle, Epcot - 10/10 We came back in the evening once it had cooled down (slightly!) and headed to the American pavilion. This was possibly my favourite meal of the trip and one of the cheapest. Loads of seating, delicious barbecued food, the sides were amazing too.
  5. Peanut Wings and Churros - Nomad Lounge, Animal Kingdom - 8/10 Didn’t get a picture but also got the bread service (3/10 - just not for me, didn’t enjoy the flavour of any of the breads or dips), and the pork belly (7.5/10). The wings were the best things we ate here, if you enjoy peanut flavour then get these.
  6. Breakfast Ronto Wrap - Ronto Roasters, Hollywood Studios - 9/10 My husband’s favourite food of the trip. Tasty sausage (most other sausages and hot dog type things we saw were boiled or steamed 🤮 this was delicious).
  7. Cold Brew Black Caf - Kat Saka’s Kettle, Hollywood Studios - 9/10 I’m not a huge coffee drinker but I really enjoyed this. It was slightly too bitter until I got further down and mixed in the creamy topping. The little chocolate puffs were great for little hits of sweetness too.
  8. Chicken tenders and Wookiee Cookie - Backlot Express, Hollywood Studios - 9/10 Just fancied some good old fashioned chicken tenders this day and these hit the spot. Wookiee Cookie much lighter than I was expecting, with a marshmallow-type fluffy filling. We shared this between us for a slightly lighter lunch.
  9. Traditional Platter - Whispering Canyon, Wilderness Lodge - 7.5/10 All you can eat platter but very filling, we couldn’t eat any more than this so it felt expensive for what we got. Our favourite was the pulled pork followed by the buttery mash. 10 & 11. Breakfast buffet - Boma, Animal Kingdom Lodge - 10/10 This was SO GOOD - best breakfast buffet I’ve been to, with the pecan cinnamon bread thing in the second picture getting it to that score of 10. It was warm and gooey and the best sweet thing I ate on the trip.
  10. Cheeseburger Pods - Satu’li Canteen, Animal Kingdom - 6/10 I didn’t expect to love this but tried it out of curiosity. If you like bao buns and the flavour of a Big Mac then you’ll love it.
If you got to the end of this I’m impressed! Thanks for bearing with me and hopefully this inspired you to try one of these dishes on your next trip.

2024.05.03 08:08 Thestoryteller987 The Peanut Gallery: May 2, 2024

Welcome to the Peanut Gallery! Today America stated the obvious.
Please remember that I know nothing.
Ukraine:
The US Department of State (DoS) announced on May 1 that it has determined that Russian forces are violating the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), to which Russia is a signatory.
The US DoS stated that it made a determination under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 (CBW Act) that Russian forces have used chloropicrin and riot control agents (RCAs) against Ukrainian forces in Ukraine in violation of the CWC. Chloropicrin is a pesticide and lung damaging agent, and Ukrainian officials have previously reported that Russian forces are increasingly equipping grenades with chloropicrin.
Finally ready to call a spade a spade, eh US DoS? Took a bit, though I imagine that’s the sort of accusation you want to slow-walk.
See, here at the Peanut Gallery we'll accuse the Kremlin of all sorts of heinous shit because we don’t have any credibility to lose. Want a demonstration? Here you go: Russian soldiers are literally cannibals.
Russian regional and opposition outlets reported that the Russian military, in October 2023, recruited two convicts who were charged for cannibalism and a gruesome murder.
They also gun down Ukrainian prisoners of war, under orders, of course, by Russian high command.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report on May 2 in which it confirmed that Russian forces have executed at least 15 surrendering Ukrainian soldiers since December 2023. [...] HRW noted that in one case Russian commanders explicitly ordered Russian forces to execute Ukrainian soldiers instead of letting them surrender.
I can do this all day.
All of the above is from this ISW report. Tomorrow it’ll be some new atrocity. Can’t wait.
The Peanut Gallery has no credibility, but the United States? Their word means something, something big, so while their accusations are slow, they also bite deep. There will be consequences for Moscow’s deprivations, rest assured. We might not see them, nor notice when they arrive, but they’ll come all the same. There’s a reason Putin spent two years flirting with tear gas instead of going right for the fun stuff. It’s because he’s afraid.
The Georgian parliament passed Georgia’s Russian-style “foreign agents” law in its second reading on May 1 amid continued protests against the law in Tbilisi.
I did not have a good take on this the first time I looked at it.
The bill under discussion essentially requires journalistic outlets to register as ‘foreign agents’ if they receive more than 20% of their funding from outside Georgia. In Russia it was the weapon used to restrict and control the information space. ‘Foreign Agent’ is a scary scarlet letter, a brand to delegitimize the voices critical of the regime. This bill’s potential passage provides a mechanism by which Putin can pressure the Georgian government to crack down on voices he deems hostile to his schemes. Worse, its passage would be an instant disqualifier for entrance into the European Union. That's probably why folks are rioting.
There is room for discussion about restricting foreign influence in our democratic processes. This bill is not that discussion. This bill is that foreign influence manifest.
Russian opposition news outlets widely reported that the 83 of 150 Georgian parliament members voted for the bill – the same number of members who supported the bill in its first reading on April 17 since the Georgian opposition refused to participate in both votes. The Georgian parliament is expected to vote on May 17 on the third and final reading of the bill, after which the bill will go to the Georgian president for the final signature. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has stated her intent to veto the bill, but the BBC noted that the ruling Georgian Dream party has sufficient numbers to overrule that veto.
Why, Dream Party? Tens of thousands occupy the Georgian capital to stand against tyranny. The president herself stated her intention to veto. Why jam through an unpopular measure in the face of such overwhelming opposition? It’s clear for all to see the Dream Party does not have a democratic mandate, else why are there protests? They don’t even hold 50% of the seats in parliament, meaning they require a coalition government to maintain their grip.
It takes two-thirds of the Georgian parliament to overrule a president’s veto, so how did a government which ignores the general populace’s wishes manage to secure so much control over a nation’s legislature? Could it be corruption and foreign influence? I think it's corruption and foreign influence.
Ukrainian intelligence officials identified three Russian efforts to destabilize Ukraine and achieve victory, and both Ukrainian and US intelligence officials issued assessments about the battlefield situation that are consistent with prior ISW forecasts that Russian forces may take Chasiv Yar but are very unlikely to seize major Ukrainian cities.
I don’t see it. But, if the Ukrainian spokesperson is saying it, then it’s likely coming from a place a whole hell of a lot more informed than me, so I guess we’ll have to take their statement at face value. The situation is clearly tenuous across the entire front.
Ukrainian Khortytsia Group of Forces Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nazar Voloshyn reported on May 2 that Russian forces control part of Ocheretyne, while Ukrainian forces have fire control over the remainder of the settlement.[75] Voloshyn reiterated that Ukrainian forces have deployed additional reserves and resources to the area to stabilize the frontline and counterattack.
What the hell does Voloshyn mean by ‘fire control’? Of course they’ve got fire control. Artillery ranges are measured in the tens of kilometers. Maybe it’s a face-saving claim, or an explanation for why Russians are still exploding in a supposedly secure settlement. Who knows.
So what happens next? Will Putin keep pressing? Or will he shift his focus to Chasiv Yar? The world holds its breath.
Ukrainian officials continue to warn that Russian forces are systematically and increasingly using chemical weapons and other likely-banned chemical substances in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Support Forces Command stated on April 5 that Ukrainian forces have recorded 371 cases of Russian forces using munitions containing chemical substances during the last month and 1,412 cases of Russian forces using chemical weapons between February 2023 and March 2024.
Please give Ukraine what they need to bring this war to an end.

2024.05.02 08:09 Thestoryteller987 The Peanut Gallery: May 1, 2024

Welcome to the Peanut Gallery! Today we move closer to the end.
Please remember that I know nothing.
Ukraine:
The Russian military is reportedly redeploying elements of the 76th and 7th airborne (VDV) divisions from Zaporizhia Oblast in the direction of eastern Ukraine, likely to reinforce and intensify ongoing offensive operations. [...]
The Russian military may seek to redeploy elements of the 76th or 7th VDV division or both to eastern Ukraine to support Russia’s offensive operations in Donetsk Oblast and to capitalize on the current window of vulnerability before American military aid begins reaching the frontline at scale.
Ah! But how wide is the window, ISW? How swiftly does it close? Putin best be quick lest he catch his fingers on the sill.
Think of the VDV as the ‘professional’ arm of the military. They’re the blocking troops, the final vestiges of Russian discipline. Their shift from Zaporizhzhia to the Donbas signifies the Kremlin intends to bring everything they can to bear on the Ocheretyne breach. The coming engagement could very well prove decisive.
Is this a good idea? Is now the time for a decisive confrontation?
From Putin’s perspective? Maybe. If not now, when? Current geopolitical trends show the PRC is drifting closer and closer to outright support for the Kremlin’s regime, and that support may hinge on a decisive military victory. Putin demonstrated his ability to freeze the United States, he demonstrated his political acumen and proficiency at wielding soft power. Now, however, he must demonstrate Russia can make good on all the shit it talks.
Looking to Ocheretyne the breach appears to be widening. Hopefully Ukraine stabilizes it soon. And on the subject of China...
The United Nations (UN) and Western organizations continue to demonstrate how North Korea and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are directly and indirectly helping Russia’s war effort.
The Economist noted that Russian imports of goods from the PRC appeared to surge following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s meeting with PRC President Xi Jinping in Moscow in March 2023. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on May 1 that Russian imports of dual-use items from the PRC have helped Russia significantly increase its defense industrial production and that 70 percent of Russia’s machine tools and 90 percent of its microelectronics come from the PRC.
Seventy percent of machine tools and ninety percent of microelectronics—are you kidding me? At those levels the problem isn’t Western companies selling parts under the table; the issue is entirely the PRC’s economic support. No wonder corporations are divesting themselves as quickly as possible from the CCP’s regime, and it’s no wonder American-Sino relations have taken such a sharp, downward turn lately. I’m terrified of what it will mean for the global economy if Xi decides to send overt arms.
Y’all remember the economic ripples we experienced in the early days of this war? The sudden up-jump in inflation and the obscene gas costs? Well get ready for that on steroids, because if Xi sends tanks and rifles then Biden might just sever the CCP from SWIFT.
ISW previously reported about the recent uptick in public meetings between Russian, PRC, North Korean, Iranian, and Belarussian officials that underscores these countries’ deepening mutual partnership aimed at confronting the West.
Yeah you did, ISW. Yeah you fuckin’ did.
The entire planet’s been waiting on the American election to shake itself out, to see whether we were stupid enough to elect Trump a second time. All signs point to ‘Nope!’, however, and anyone who’s paying even the slightest attention to that orangutan’s criminal trial can see he’s going down in flames. With the Free World pouring money into defense procurement and manufacturing, and with corporations fleeing the CCP in droves, and with the Chinese economy in a state of collapse, a successful invasion of Taiwan looks less likely by the day.
Unfortunately these facts may simply encourage Xi to move up his timetable.
Bloomberg reported that four sanctioned Russian oil tankers have changed their names and are sailing under new flags.
Bloomberg reported on April 30 that tankers from Sovcomflot, Russia’s state-owned oil tanker company, renamed four of its sanctioned vessels: the NS Columbus to the Kemerovo, the NS Bravo to the Belgorod, the NS Captain to the Kaliningrad, and the NS Creation to the Krasnoyarsk. Bloomberg reported that these ships are now flying Russian flags after previously sailing with Gabonese flags. [...] It is unclear why these ships changed their names and flags to highlight their connection with Russia, and this decision seems counterproductive if these vessels hope to distance themselves from international sanctions against Russia.
Now this is interesting...
Part of Putin’s shadow tanker fleet stepped out into the open. This is atypical behavior as, normally, the incentives encourage keeping things on the downlow. To go into the open is interesting, to say the least.
I can think of several reasons why this might be the case:
  1. These vessels are about as obviously Russian as it gets. The Kremlin might not think it’s worth their time to hide their movements.
  2. Gabon kicked them out and they can’t find another country stupid and desperate enough to expose themselves to international condemnation by registering their vessels.
  3. International waters are about to get a lot less copacetic, and a vessel’s flags will become relevant again.
Personally I think it’s the first, but I’m open to considering the third if relations with the PRC continue their degradation.
Russian state-run news outlets appear to be amplifying anti-Western rhetoric from former Georgian Prime Minister and founder of the Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili and are negatively portraying Georgians protesting against Georgia’s “foreign agents” bill, likely in an attempt to destabilize and divide Georgia.
ISW is understating what’s happening in Georgia hard. Get a look at this photo I took off /LoveForUkraine. Reportedly someone snapped that photo at two in the morning. Yet the Kremlin stooges in the Georgian parliament continue to ignore their protests. It is abundantly clear the general populace possesses zero interest in closer ties to the Russian Federation. Take a fuckin’ hint.
Why Putin is pressing on this bill now (instead of after the war) lies beyond my comprehension, but he clearly believes himself unstoppable, so maybe he’s simply drunk on his own power. Who knows? If he keeps pushing, though, those Kremlin sycophants will wake up to find that mob standing at the foot of their bed.
Ukrainian forces struck an oil refinery in Ryazan Oblast for the second time in less than a month on the night of April 30 to May 1.
Well done, Ukraine! That's another 'X' on the Bingo card!
Footage from the wreckage shows a bigass fire, and the rumor I saw bouncing around was that Ukraine struck the primary oil processing unit. That’s going to take the whole son of a bitch offline for weeks, if not permanently.
Last time Ukraine struck the Ryazan Refinery they knocked out 70% of the facility's output. It took Russia months to bring it back up to speed, likely representing a significant effort. Last night’s strike rendered all of it meaningless.

2024.05.01 08:28 Thestoryteller987 The Peanut Gallery: April 30, 2024

Welcome to the Peanut Gallery! Today I’m having trouble focusing, so it’s going to be short.
Please remember that I know nothing.
Ukraine:
Russian forces did not make any confirmed advances in the Avdiivka area on April 30 for the first time in several days, while Ukrainian sources reported that Russian forces conducted several more attacks in the Bakhmut-Chasiv Yar direction than near Avdiivka.
The Ukrainian General Staff’s morning and evening reports on April 30 stated that Ukrainian forces repelled a total of 47 Russian attacks in the Avdiivka direction and 57 Russian attacks in the Bakhmut direction throughout the day, notably a much higher number of attacks in the Chasiv Yar direction than Ukrainian sources have recently reported out on.[1] One day’s worth of reporting is not sufficient to establish a pattern, but it may suggest that Russian forces are somewhat slowing down the rate of attacks around Avdiivka while re-committing to offensive pushes around Chasiv Yar, as ISW recently forecasted they would.
I mean you wouldn’t think it looking at the conversation swirling around on Reddit today, but I guess that’s why ISW is the ISW: they’re damn good at objectively analyzing information. No nonsense, no frills—just cold hard facts. Respect.
Russian forces may decide to push from their salient north of Avdiivka towards the Toretsk area to complement Russian offensive operations near Chasiv Yar, which would likely require Russian forces to conduct a tactical pause to concentrate forces for such a drive.
Chasiv Yar draws resources a sister settlement to the west called Kostiantynivka. The two are mutually supporting, maintained by the T05-04 highway. That little road enables the two combat fronts to intermingle.
Men defending in Avdiivka can rapidly redeploy to repel assaults on Chasiv Yar (and vice-versa), for example, so the press on Ocheretyne has the serious potential of compromising that link. If this truly is the reason for the sudden pause in Avdiivka, then it’s due to a recent decision, or the Russians need a quick breather. One or the other. It figures that they’d get winded on their own breakthrough.
Cardio, folks. It’s important.
Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces conducted a short-range MGM-140 ATACMS strike against targets in occupied Crimea on the night of April 29 to 30. [...]
Russia opposition outlet Astra reported that Ukrainian missiles, presumably ATACMS missiles, struck facilities of the Russian 31st Air Defense Division in Chornomorsk and Saky raions and the Dzhankoi airfield, causing a fire and wounding several Russian servicemen.
Another hit on an airfield? What’s that? Like the third in a week? Tits, Ukraine. Absolute tits.
Keep this up and Russia won’t have a plane left in the sky by the time the F-16s make an appearance.
Former Georgian Prime Minister and founder of the Georgian Dream political party Bidzina Ivanishvili reiterated a series of standard Kremlin information operations during his first public speech since announcing his return to Georgian public politics in December 2023.
Oof, that’s not going to go down well with the angry mob occupying the capital. You’d think he’d poke his head out a window and take a hint, read the room, you know? But then if the mob felt they’d been heard then they wouldn’t be in the streets protesting. Revolution often starts polite, then gets real ugly, real quick. Last I heard, Georgian authorities had deployed teargas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. It doesn’t seem to be working, though. Honestly, I don’t see any non-lethal space left for this to escalate. If the crowd doesn’t disperse this situation could seriously degenerate.

2024.04.24 08:04 Thestoryteller987 The Peanut Gallery: April 23, 2024

Welcome to the Peanut Gallery! Today the war took a dark turn.
Please remember that I know nothing.
Ukraine:
The situation in the area of Ocheretyne in Donetsk region is complicated: in an attempt to capture the locality, the enemy uses the entire available arsenal of weapons against our units, including chemical poisons, and tries to consolidate in the southern part of Ocheretyne.
At the present time, the majority of the settlement is controlled by the Defense Forces, the southern part of the locality is under the fire control of our artillery, and exhaustive measures are being taken to drive the enemy out of the southern part of Ocheretyne and stabilize the situation in this direction.
We knew this day would come. Putin spent the entire war flirting with chemical weapons. Public perception held him back. It’s difficult—downright impossible to frame this conflict as a righteous Slavic crusade when the Russian army gasses the very people they’ve ostensibly come to liberate. Even Hitler balked at the prospect of chemical weapons. The man was a bloodthirsty animal, but he remembered the horrors of the First World War. There are some lines which must never be crossed.
Ocheretyne is a smallish settlement to the northwest of Avdiivka, prewar population of about 3.5 thousand. Strategically the settlement matters because it’s situated on the highlands between two rivers, acting as a gateway of sorts to the lowlands behind. If it falls, so too do the settlements directly to the west.
I wish I had better news. Russia’s deployment of chemical weapons now is a direct response to the imminent arrival of American and Czech artillery shells. Russia needs to create a breach; they need to exploit this small window of opportunity to the maximum they are able, which means using every tool at their disposal. Yes, this escalation is likely a sign of the Kremlin’s desperation, but it’s one with real potential for harm.
My heart goes out to the brave Ukrainians holding the frontline. Stay strong. Help is on the way.
United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the UK’s largest ever package of military assistance to Ukraine valued at 500 million pounds (around $662 million) on April 23.
Sunak announced on April 23 that the UK will provide over 400 vehicles, 4 million rounds of small arms ammunition, 60 boats, air defense equipment, and Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine. Sunak also stated that the UK will increase its military spending to 2.5 percent of its GDP by 2030, with spending gradually increasing to 87 billion pounds (about $108 billion) in the next six years. Sunak stated that the increased defense spending will put the UK “on a war footing” as the UK is facing an “axis of authoritarian states with different values...like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China.”
Rule, Britannia! Britannia rules the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves!
Lots and lots of boats recently. Anyone else notice that? Me thinks Ukraine is up to something.
The real important takeaway, however, is the promise to spend 2.5% of Britain’s GDP on defense. That number lends confidence to defense industrialists to invest heavily into long-term productive capacity. The ‘market cap’ of their industry just got a whole hell of a lot higher. These are the sorts of investments NATO has needed to make for years, and I’m glad the West is finally investing sufficiently into their own manufacturing capacity. A potentially expansionist CCP represents a threat the entire world must prepare to contain, and we can’t pull that off if we restrict ourselves to peacetime spending levels.
A sufficient investment in defense now helps deter future war.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu highlighted ongoing Russian offensive operations near Chasiv Yar, Avdiivka, and Donetsk City and announced Russia’s intent to intensify its strike campaign to disrupt Ukrainian logistics.
Shoigu’s focus on striking Ukrainian logistics suggests that Russian forces may shift their target set to hit Ukrainian transportation infrastructure, logistics, and military storage facilities. Russian forces heavily targeted Ukrainian transportation infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on April 19, and Russian forces may intend to replicate and expand these strikes in the coming weeks to interdict Ukrainian ground lines of communication (GLOCs). The Russian military command may hope that a coordinated interdiction effort will constrain Ukraine’s ability to sufficiently distribute manpower and materiel to critical sectors of the front and delay the improved capabilities that the arrival of US security assistance will afford Ukrainian forces.
Looks like the Kremlin shifted their strategic focus to Ukrainian logistics, which, quite frankly, I’m shocked wasn’t their original target. While I’m certain hitting energy infrastructure has some sort of effect, I always felt the returns failed to match the Kremlin’s obscene expenditure. Paradoxically, terrorism only works when the fight isn’t existential. People will endure a lot of discomfort if the alternative means surrendering one’s liberty. Authoritarians never seem to grasp that concept. Sacrifice is utterly anathema to their world view.
Hopefully the Patriot reloads arrive before the Kremlin can do too much damage.
Moldovan authorities confiscated over one million dollars from Kremlin-linked Moldovan opposition politicians at the Chisinau airport on the night of April 22 to 23, and the opposition politicians likely intended to use to bribe protestors and voters.
[The Shor Party] reportedly paid demonstrators to protest Moldovan President Maia Sandu in 2022, and Moldovan authorities are investigating the Shor Party for bribing voters during the 2023 Gagauzia gubernatorial election. Moldovan authorities have also detained members of Moldovan parliament who reportedly took bribes from Shor affiliates.
ISW previously assessed that the creation of the Victory electoral bloc would allow the Kremlin to focus on a unified political effort as part of its efforts to destabilize Moldovan society, attack Moldova’s democratic government, and prevent Moldova’s accession to the European Union (EU).
I’ve got something shameful to admit, folks. I haven’t reported extensively on Moldova’s struggles because I didn't want to figure out how their country works. To speak with confidence on the subject, I’d have to research their history, their laws, their culture—the whole nine yards. It’s pure intellectual laziness on my part. Please don’t let my failings minimize Moldova’s importance.
Perhaps more than any other nation (except Ukraine) they’ve suffered the brunt of Putin’s manipulations. He has interwoven himself extensively into Moldova’s political fabric, and while I intend to address my ignorance at the soonest available opportunity, I’ve included the above from the ISW as a primer.
Understand that straight-up bribing voters is right in keeping with the Kremlin’s typical behavior. That is what the Moldovan people suffer daily. Their government is compromised by Kremlin cronies, and it’s a damn fine example of what Putin intends to inflict on the rest of us.
The Chechen Republic appears to be trying to align itself more closely with Iran over the backdrop of intensifying bilateral security cooperation between Russia and Iran.
Head of the Chechen Rosgvardia branch Adam Delimkhanov stated on April 22 that he met with Iranian Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian during a visit to Iran on Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov’s orders. Delimkhanov reported that he and Ahmadian discussed security issues in Central Asia and the Middle East and the prospects of Russo-Iranian cooperation in countering national security threats to both states.
Ha! I love Kadyrov. The man’s such a cowardly piece of shit.
Officially, Iran & Russia are Best Buds 4 Evah. Unofficially, however, the Ayatollah doesn’t give a fuck about Ukraine; and Putin doesn’t give a fuck about the Ayatollah’s throbbing hateboner for Israel. They've glommed together because doing so divides the West’s attention.
And meanwhile down in Chechnya, Kadyrov keeps on truckin'. All he cares about his little barony, and he’ll do or say anything to ensure its survival. He’s perhaps the most consistent actor in this war, myopically focused on self-preservation. I respect that commitment. It makes him one hell of a bellwether for internal Kremlin politics.
Today we saw Kadyrov cozy up to Iran. This outreach could just be a low-risk opportunity to hedge his bets and find himself a backup security guarantor, or it could speak to instability within the regime. The aggressiveness of his overtures likely correlates with his confidence in Putin’s grip on the Caucuses. And considering Armenia plans to leave the CSTO officially this coming fall, and considering recent Georgian protests against Kremlin influence, he’s probably feeling that grip growing real tenuous.

Are there any good alternatives for uncrustables? I love getting baked and eating a frozen one but this is disheartening.

Key points:
The FDA has been notifying the company since 2018 that there is contamination in the production plants:
"Your environmental monitoring records from July 24, 2018, November 26, 2018, October 9, 2019, and November 4, 2019, revealed four Salmonella-positive environmental swabs located at roaster (b)(4), stairs leading to a platform “(b)(4)”, the floor of the entrance to the blanch nut tank rooms (b)(4) and (b)(4), and the floor broom in the roaster (b)(4). You determined that the root causes for each Salmonella-positive environmental swab were roof leaks or increased foot traffic during repairs in response to roof leaks; and"
They revisited the issue in 2021 and found Salmonella was still present at the locations.
"Your environmental monitoring records from 2021 revealed five Salmonella-positive environmental swabs in your facility on July 6, July 8, July 12, September 3, and November 16, 2021. These Salmonella-positive swabs were found on the floors near your blanch nut tank rooms, roaster booth (b)(4), the stairs at the top level of the nut house (b)(4), and the stairs leading to a platform “(b)(4)”. The detection of Salmonella in your facility in 5 locations in 2021, many of which were similar to locations where you detected Salmonella in 2018 and 2019, show that your corrective action procedures in response to environmental contamination in 2018 and 2019 were not sufficient."
In addition to this, there were large puddles of water throughout the facility. A clear risk for contamination and harboring of bacteria.
"Puddles of standing water ranging in size from 4 feet wide to 8 feet wide were found in the production plant."
So what do y'all think

2024.04.16 22:09 GalacticDiscourse090 [EVENT] Ramming through the Public Order and Resentencing Directive (PORD)

Duluth and Atlanta have been in a internal panic for the past few weeks. Multiple intelligence failures from the GBIS in alerting the government of an impending Aetiopian attack have sealed the fate of many tens of thousands of Georgians in the fires of Columbus. As news reports of roving bands of black militias and armed gangs roam the border with Aetiopia, immense pressure from Governor Marvin Griffin to stack troops on the border and prevent any such raid from happening again. Macon burned first, then Columbus, the threat of Aetiopia's aircraft has been long ignored by the Confederate Armed Forces, who believed the Communists to be the greater military and ideological threat in terms of capacity.
While the Armed Forces formulate another punitive expedition on the wayward Black state of the South, officers at the GBIS have been voicing demands to take control over military affairs and be unleashed upon the public sphere in a campaign to end resistance across Georgia. Rumours abound both from within and without Georgia of burgeoning resistance groups hostile to Renewalist interests. Shermanite remnants in Kentucky, John Brown militias, the Appalachian Partisans, now the Peanut Man. It is clear there are plots in the shadows to overthrow the Renewalist system and we must snuff them out for good.
The Confederate Congress thus passed the Public Order and Resentencing Directive or P.O.R.D for short. It grants sweeping political powers to the Confederate Bureau of Investigation & Statistics to detain and arrest any individual suspected of collusion or sympathy with rebellion against the state. Habeas Corpus has been suspended and no expense is spared in finding these rebels. Greater control of the CBIS onto the Confederate Army has been provided with the CBIS raising several paramilitary brigades to help in sustaining the front against the Communists and the Aetiopians.

2024.04.16 08:25 Thestoryteller987 The Peanut Gallery: April 15, 2024

Welcome to the Peanut Gallery! Today we will discuss lies.
Please remember that I know nothing.
Ukraine:
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing toward action this week on aid for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, unveiling an elaborate plan Monday to break the package into separate votes to squeeze through the House’s political divides on foreign policy.
Facing an outright rebellion from conservatives fiercely opposed to aiding Ukraine, the Republican speaker’s move on the foreign aid package was a potentially watershed moment, the first significant action on the bill after more than two months of delay. But Johnson’s intention to hold four separate votes on parts of the package also left it open to being significantly altered from the $95 billion aid package the Senate passed in February.
https://apnews.com/article/israel-ukraine-house-speaker-42a2f281a5437beaa8af4c3345987637
I hate that mother fucker. Mike Johnson is a squirming worm, one the world would be far better off without.
Sin—the Original Sin as outline in Genesis—wasn’t eating from the Tree of Knowledge, nor disobeying God. It was the lie. As Adam and Eve hid in the bushes, ashamed of their nakedness, they lied to themselves as to why they felt shame, blaming their actions on an external force in the form of the Serpent. Yes, Lucifer played a part, but at the end of the day Adam & Eve chose to eat from the tree of their own volition and freewill.
Freewill...what a strange concept...to recognize its existence is to recognize the reason for our actions, complete with our own hidden motivations. There is no “Good” just as there is no “Evil”, because such things are value judgements in a purposeless existence. By claiming that our nakedness is worthy of shame is to introduce the very concept of shame into reality, rendering Paradise an impossibility.
Mike Johnson is a hypocrite. He is lying to America, to Ukraine, and the World. He is so steeped in Sin that it bleeds from him in ochre waves. He wraps himself in fig leaves to hide his shame, but he cannot hide from himself.
Pass the fucking bill, Johnson. Put it on the floor, or at least find the courage to stand before God and your country to confess your treasons.
Ukrainian officials continue to warn that US security assistance is vital to Ukrainian forces’ ability to defend against current and future Russian offensive operations forecasted to begin in late spring and summer.
Every day Johnson dithers enables Putin’s slaughter of Ukrainian innocents. Their blood is on his hands.
I have zero doubt that Russia will attempt another push this coming summer. Putin clearly scents weakness, a weakness he intends to exploit to the maximum he is capable. If that means launching another six-month campaign to conquer a hamlet then so be it. We can’t prevent Putin from attacking, but we do decide whether his attack succeeds.
Make the right decision, Speaker.
Russian prosecution rates of men who had fled compulsory military service have reportedly increased since fall 2022.
Independent Russian outlet Mediazona reported that Russian officials sentence 34 men every day for avoiding compulsory military service.[70] Mediazona reported that Russian officials examined 700 cases of Russian men avoiding military service in March 2024 alone, reportedly marking the highest rate of military service evasion. Mediazona calculated that Russian courts considered 7,300 cases concerning Russian servicemen who went absent without leave since the Kremlin’s announcement of partial mobilization in September 2022.
I wonder if the spike in desertions has to do with the successive meat wave offensives Putin launched to conquer Avdiivka and Bakhmut.
So I did some math and the numbers don’t match up. It has been 562 days since Oct. 1st 2022. If the 34 men sentenced number is semi-consistent, then we should be looking at 19,108 desertions, not the 7,300 cited. And that’s just counting those the Kremlin caught...or bothered to send to trial.
Now maybe desertions wax and wane in accordance with activity along the front, or Mediazona used the Kremlin’s self-reported data to come to that number, or maybe they just pulled it out of a hat. Honestly it doesn’t matter. The real interesting take away is the rate—thirty-four is significant and likely only a tiny reflection of the problem’s true scope. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if Russia’s daily desertions were closer to ~10% of Ukraine’s reported casualties.
The more deserters who escape from the Russian army the safer others will feel to follow in their steps. This is very much the sort of issue which can quickly spiral out of control.
Crimean occupation administration head Sergei Aksyonov passed a decree restricting migrant labor in occupied Crimea, undermining the Kremlin’s effort to mitigate labor shortages.
The decree banned businesses from hiring migrants for 35 different types of jobs, including transportation, agriculture and food production, natural resource supplies, public utilities, trade (except trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles), culture, and education.[21] The decree notably does not ban migrants from construction work, which indicates that Crimean occupation officials may be able to legally employ migrants to build fortifications, logistics routes, or other infrastructure in support of Russia’s war effort.
Why? Just...fuckin’ why? There’s already a labor shortage, why make it worse? It’s not like the average Russian is hurting for work.
This law was obviously written and passed to cater to the neonationalist miliblogger community. Racist bastards. It’s a pointless and poorly thought-out decree, one which will only ensure an obscene spike in services in temporarily occupied Crimea. Not that it matters. Ukraine proved they can strike the peninsula at will, so I sincerely doubt there is much of economic worth left in the province.
Now that I think about it, maybe that’s the point. Ship the migrants back to Russia where they might do some good...instead of acting as partisans on Ukraine’s behalf.
Russian state media seized on Georgian protests against a proposed law similar to Russia’s “foreign agent” law, likely as part of Kremlin efforts to amplify political discord in Georgia.
Kremlin newswire TASS reported extensively on Georgian parliamentary debates on April 15 about a proposed law that would require non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive more than 20 percent of their budget from foreign sources to register as “an organization pursuing the interests of a foreign power”
As well they should! Well done! In fact, I’d love something like that in the States, specifically regarding campaign donations, politically motivated non-profits, and super PACs. I feel like we could clear up a whole hell of a lot political gridlock if we just knew where everyone stood.

2024.04.03 07:54 HelpMePharmD Food recs

Just here to share all the amazing food we had during our trip. We did avoid the al pastor taco stands, only because I believe that’s what got us sick during the last trip. Although on our last day, a local suggested ordering it “bien doradito” (crispy), which I think would mitigate the risk of a lil medium rare situation when it gets very busy and fewer rotations on the spit.
Coffee:
-MG coffee roasters: supreme mazapan (peanut candy) latte, taro latte, and almond croissant
-La petite boheme: perfect hazelnut latte, super friendly staff. Super cute location
Food:
-Bar La Isla: the tuna tostadas and marlin tostadas were fantastic, recommended by the company we rented a golf cart from. It was a little pricier but the beachfront view cannot be beat. Bloody Cesar was delicious too
-Bichos tacos: I cannot stress enough how amazing this meal was. We got the pescado taco (fried), al pastor vulcan, and a supreme strawberry/passionfruit aguas Frescas. The salsa bar was a perfect accompaniment.
-Sol38: This was our “splurge” meal, but the prices were actually very fair. Everything we got was seasoned perfectly, but the dulce Serrano toasts and the cochinita pibil deserve a mention. Our server Felipe was lovely to talk to and the vibes were chef’s kiss
-Don Churro’s: strawberry churros, enough said.
We had a few other less memorable meals but honestly everything was delicious. We didn’t get a chance to try Matiz’s (marlin tacos) or Tono’s (street tacos), but definitely will next time.

2024.03.15 02:19 GalacticDiscourse090 [EVENT] Staring into the Abyss

[DISCLAIMER: The following is a work of fiction that in no shape or form represents the opinions and values of the author nor is it an endorsement of the ideology portrayed in this work.]
The story of Luke Greyhound could not stray further from any normal Georgian citizen. Born in Valdosta, Georgia in 1924 from a family of farmers, he grew up attending the family's homestead and helping his father tend to his tomatoes and livestock. His family were black sharecroppers who made their lives after the Civil War. His dad, George, eventually acquired his land in Plains where he grew tomatoes, cashews, peanuts, cucumbers, and blueberries in addition to livestock.
Luke was always a curious boy, looking outwards over what was out there. Greyhound sought knowledge, His mother always told him that the only way to move up in life was to go to the big city and be educated at a university. So he studied hard in his local elementary school, enduring a ruthless campaign of abuse by his white peers as he learned the brutal reality of racism in America. Despite his split time helping his father at the farm and his studies, he managed to graduate top of his class at his school much to the chagrin of his classmates. When the war began, he was enlisted to serve in Europe as a signalman. He returned to Georgia in 1944 to work for the Reserves and was demobilized.
Greyhound returned to his hometown in Valdosta where he reunited with his family and the love of his life Anna. Life seemed to look up for young Luke, despite the war continuing on in Japan, he would make his way to Atlanta to study engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Then in 1945... the world ended.
While in his first bachelor year, Valdosta was engulfed by the sea. The livelihoods of the Greyhounds were lost in hours. His mother Joanna died in the floods, as the house she resided in was destroyed while she was inside. His father managed to survive the ordeal as did Anna but they and much of Valdosta's residents were forced to flee north. Greyhound returned as fast as he could to help in the recovery but by the time it happened, it was too late. He could not save his mother. The Greyhounds lost their livelihoods from the floods as did many Georgian families from the coastal areas. George was dispossessed of his belongings as they were lost, while Anna was forced to flee to the city to start a new life there.
The government quickly attempted to help beleaguered Georgian farmers in the recovery but Greyhound's skin color denied him government aid and insurance to help recover his finances and his farm. Luke was quickly forced to become the breadwinner of the family at a difficult time. His father eventually found work in the Reconstruction Corps in which he was able to at least acquire paltry sums to keep himself fed. Luke was forced to find a job as a postman as education was slowly gated by lack of funding, leading to Luke's rise in extraneous debt. His studies took a hit, no longer obtained the same quality and reputation as before, unable to sleep due to punishing guilt, led to a sharp drop in his grades. Despite this bleak existence, he kept on
It's now 1956 and the 33-year-old Luke completed a degree in civil engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology at the cost of an extreme amount of accumulated debt. Nevertheless, he was unable to find stable employment as a black man of his skillset were shunned by most if not all employers. In the aftermath of the Renewalist power consolidation, he was often visited by the authorities where he was forced to disclose his financial woes even though Greyhound was a law-abiding citizen. Over time he heard less and less from his father while Anna was harrassed multiple times by Renewalist paramilitaries while on her conmute to work. The tensions grew when Greyhound started asking questions directly to the authorities about the location of his father, to which they replied the same thing. "On Program"
Suddenly on a quaint night, Greyhound was arrested by the authorities, placed a bag on his head, and was beaten and dragged into an unmarked van. As he woke up he looked around him and he was chained up in front of a courtroom, still bloodied from the encounter. In front of him sat several judges who would hear Greyhound's case.
Judge: How do you plead?
Greyhound: ... what? Sorry, this must be a misunderstanding what the hell is going on here.
Judge: shut up slur How do you plead?
Greyhound: On what charges?
Judge 2: Aggravated Assault, resisting arrest, defrauding the Georgian people off state funds, tax evasion, unreported finances to the state, sedition.
Greyhound: ... Not... Not guilty.
Judge: We already have a verdict.
Greyhound: You what now?
Judge 2: The jury finds Luke Greyhound also known as Inmate 66090, guilty of all charges. Send him to Station Crane 4.
Before Greyhound could object, he was tackled, muffled, beaten, and then escorted to a truck where he was dropped alongside several other inmates. Greyhound regained his senses and saw other men, in similar condition to him, sitting huddled together. The man in front of him introduced himself as Nathan.
Greyhound: What is going on
Nathan: We are going to the work camps.
Greyhound: The work camps?
Nathan: Didn't you know? The Workforce Integration Act was passed recently. They are rounding up people like us to go work in the mines and factories as forced laborers.
Greyhound: But I did not do anything, I obeyed the law all my life and did everything I was asked for. I am an engineer for god sake.
Nathan: To the Renewalists it does not matter. All that matters is that you are like me... like lambs to the slaughter.
Greyhound could no longer speak, as his injuries made him lose focus, the truck's loud engine deafening as he processes what just happened, moving into the dead of night towards one of hundreds of the State of Georgia's new slave camps tasked with providing the raw materials and industrial goods necessary for the Renewalist corporatist economy...

[Slavery Type set from POW Slavery to Bondage Slavery]
[Industrial Subsidies set to Medium]
[Changed certain provinces to produce IG and CM to reflect new work camps]

2024.03.11 17:41 FishermanLogical262 Bad Coffee Or Bad Technique?

I went to a new coffee shop over the weekend and they were using the AeroPress for some of their coffees. I was pretty impressed by some of the roasters they carried. I ordered Passenger's Shoondhisa coffee. I don't use my AeroPress a ton. So I am not great with it. However, this coffee was pretty terrible. I am not sure why but the coffee was really cloudy looking. Even my wife made a comment about how cloudy the coffee looked. The coffee tasted like burnt peanut oil and burnt rubber. The coffee aroma even had the same notes.
At the time I thought it was the coffee itself. Maybe Passenger had messed up the roasting. However, later on I started to think maybe it was the coffee shop.
I imagine there could be a ton of reasons for this. However, I was just curious if you guys thought it might be the roast itself or user error. I can't imagine the coffee was supposed to taste this way.

2024.03.01 01:36 GalacticDiscourse090 [LORE] It only takes a second to die...

Jimmy Carter hated Atlanta, not necessarily due to the people but mostly the acrid smell of smoke and soot. Ever since the world fell, Atlanta became an industrial class city, rising into the beating heart of the Georgian economy that is known today. Usually, the young Carter only visited Atlanta for meetings with his commanding officers or to visit his friends at the Georgia Institute of Technology, instead preferring to live in Augusta, or his peanut farm back in Plains. But today was different. Today he wanted to catch up on an old friend of his, Blake Van Leer.
Van Leer is the President of the Georgia Institute of Technology and a close protege of Carter, whom he saw as an exceptional student with a great future. When the Carters’ peanut business was going under after the floods, Van Leer chipped in to help the family out. Even though Van Leer and Carter Sr. were ideologically at odds, Jimmy Carter was different from his father, far more open and reserved.
Arriving at the diner where he was scheduled to meet, he spotted Van Leer lighting a cigarette leaning down a stop sign.
Carter: Professor?
Van Leer: Carter! How are you holding up
Carter: Good I think, Academy has me overworked with all the recruits I gotta train.
Van Leer: chuckles Well it seems you have now learned what its like to deal with students like you dont you think?
Carter: Oh come on Blake, I wasnt that bad in class.
Van Leer: You may be right, Come with me and have a drink.
The two men sit down and order two beers. Despite the lackluster and poorly maintained exterior, the interior was fairly well maintained, a touch of light in a sea of withered buildings after 10 years of disrepair. They talk stories about what they experienced since the world fell and enjoy eachother’s company. That is until Van Leer’s mood switches
Van Leer: Listen uhh, Jim
Carter: Yes?
Van Leer: Is your wife and the farm doing allright?
Carter: Yes… Eleanor has been hard at work maintaining the farm for me while I get extra income to make due. Fertilizer costs are off the charts, ever since those Renewalists got into office, they have been prioritizing their guys to get cheap subsidized fertilizer, machine parts and other goods while the common man gets squat. But we are managing.
Van Leer: Hmm, seems like we have something in common.
Carter: In what regards?
Van Leer: I am probably going to resign from the presidency of the Institute
Carter: What? Why?
Van Leer: The Renewalists’ new educational policy strictly forbade any advanced education towards black and other nonwhite students, instead segregating them into new “technical schools” in the countryside. I looked at it further and the reality of such a law appalled me. There are no more provisions for many of my students and my department has been recently slashed in funding. It feels like I am fighting a futile engagement against my superiors.
Carter: Jesus
Van Leer: It gets worse than that, I cant’ tell you the amount of times I stumbled upon my former students whose family members are continuously intimidated for voicing opposition to Talmadge or were deported to undisclosed locations and are struggling to find them This does not feel like the America I once knew. These… fascists they do not stop. I filed a complaint to the Secretary of Education but he ignored me.
Carter: I see…
Van Leer: I published an article denouncing the Georgia State government’s obscene negligence when it comes to our budget as well as their blatant attempts at destroying the educational institutions of this state and it has just been released to the public. I hope with my statements I can make a difference in swaying public opinion against these guys. We need them out of office. Otherwise I fear they will just continue to gobble up the state until there is nothing left and we become another petty dictatorship.
Carter: Blake but… surely the Democrats can do something about this? I hear in the House the Democratic Caucus is planning to impeach Talmadge of election tampering and corruption with undisclosed estates. Most of the Renewalists were former Democrats, they should have some sense to get this guy out?
Van Leer: Jimmy… sigh … the Democrats are toothless in this. They are by and large a controlled opposition. They can't do shit, so what, Talmadge can just stack the courts, he could dissolve Congress for all he cares when he has an army of sycophants following him.
Carter: I believe we will find a way out of this rut. We just need a little faith and optimism, God knows that all we have left.
Van Leer: I guess you are right.
The men finished their drinks and headed outside where they would say their good byes
Van Leer: So… keep Eleanor safe for me would ya?
Carter: Oh you bet Blake, Ill ensure that she will be just fi….
Gunshot
###On the night of June 1955, President Blake Van Leer, a civil rights icon of Georgia was murdered by assassination today, the gunmen responsible for this horrendous attack have yet to be confirmed to be found. Multiple witnesses claim it to be a drive by shooting from a black car where Van Leer was conversing with a friend of his on the walkway before being shot in the neck. Allies of Van Leer from within the Democratic Party claim the murder to be politically motivated as days after publishing his treatise against Governor Talmadge and his mismanagement of education funds sparked uproar against the Renewalist government. The death of such a highly esteemed individual among Georgian society has already elicited a violent response from anti Renewalist activists and the Democratic Opposition…###
The car speeds away as Van Leer collapses into the street with a gunshot wound in the neck.
Carter: I NEED AN AMBULANCE PLEASE! SOMEONE HELP!

2024.02.26 02:02 GalacticDiscourse090 [LORE] Two Visions, One State

August 8th 1954
… and always remember what THEY have done to us, Are you prepared for what's to come? I sure do hope so. … that is our show, thank you so much for listening to Radio Renew Georgia, I could not provide this public service without our sponsors…
The broadcasting room switches off as the radio host goes off for a commercial break. Radio clerks make gestures at the hosts finishing up for the day. The men kick up their feet as they relax after a long day of work at Radio Renew Georgia. Some grab their beverage, within easy reach while others grab a cigarette to smoke with. Radio Renew Georgia is a major radio frequency, providing Georgians with easy-to-access local and international news, opinion pieces, and commentary. It is also, quite conveniently, heavily aligned to the Renewalist Party of Georgia with members of the party praising its host Frank J. Kelly for “providing us with the best news coverage of the country” and “An unbiased source of information we could all rely upon.” Today’s broadcast was no different from previous ones, another mass shooting in Macon conducted by a right-wing extremist against left-wing trade unionists whom the Renewalist party did not condone, Black-on-Black crime in Atlanta, Congressional proceedings in St. Louis, and of course, the horrors that unfold upon the State of Aetiopia. Nevertheless, present in the radio hall was Governor Herman Talmadge himself who is running for reelection in November. After a quick bathroom break, Frank Kelly returned to his seat to which he began asking questions to Mr. Talmadge about the upcoming election.
Frank J. Kelly: So… Mr. Talmadge, I hear you are going down in the polls lately? Is that a cause for concern for you?
Herman Talmadge: Not at all Mr. Kelly, yes the polling data suggests that I may be behind, I'd rather not trust them, It's a well-known fact that the pollsters are influenced by radicals from within academia and the Democrats to skew the data in their favor… I think the real numbers suggest I am ahead.
Frank J. Kelly: How do you know this?
Herman Talmadge: The party has information that I am not at liberty to say.
Frank J. Kelly: Ah, well you guys better get your shit together, a victory for Ellis Arnall would be disastrous for the nation!
Herman Talmadge: I agree… err, listen, Frank, we aren't on air right?
Frank J. Kelly: No we are not Governor.
Herman Talmadge: Good, well, Arnall has plenty of advantages, sure, he has the Dems on his side with the money and the institutional backing necessary to be able to win. But he does not have the will to win, not really.
Frank J. Kelly: Will to Win? … chuckles what does that mean?
Herman Talmadge: He is weak, he is not the same person he was in the 40s. His party has been hollowed out due to our efforts. He knows this is their last chance to win or there may not be a second chance. Scratch that, there won’t be a second chance.
Frank’s smirk disappears as he finishes his smoke
Frank J. Kelly: Do you mean that it is almost time?
Herman Talmadge: Yes
Frank J. Kelly: Well… with all due respect. While I graciously accept the donations of your party, I did not expect you guys to be serious in this, I… I mean, canceling elections, calling for a constitutional rewrite, calling for martial law, and the mass detainment of enemies of the state? This shit is crazy! The fucking Feds will be on our ass by the next day.
Herman Talmadge: Frank, you should have understood the game by now. Everything is in place. All we need is a spark to light the fire. And the Feds will not do anything, they are too busy squabbling in St. Louis over the quagmire of letting actual Communists into Congress. I spoke with Congressman Harry J. Byrd about it and the CCA has a high likelihood of getting shot down by the Senate. If anything, the CCA failing will give us the perfect pretext to abandon the Union.
Frank J. Kelly: God willing. For I do not want to find myself in a federal prison with the likes of you when we are done.
Herman Talmadge: Just you see…
----
Halfway around the state, in Columbus, a young lieutenant commander gave a lecture on diesel propulsion and safe handling of machinery aboard a submarine to a classroom of 35 naval cadets. Due to the shortage of well-trained naval personnel, senior officers relied on junior commanders to give classes to upcoming recruits. As the class ended, he returned to his house where he was met by his wife.
----
Jimmy Carter: Well… this is a surprise
Rosalynn Smith: Don't tell me you didn't miss me.
Jimmy Carter: Of course not love.
Rosalynn Smith: How was it today?
Jimmy Carter: Ehh… I think they got the gist of it, submarine propulsion isnt exactly hard, but it isnt easy either. I'm confident they got out of the lecture well. They seem to like me.
Rosalynn Smith: Of course! I think you are an exceptional public speaker, I am sure they got out of the lecture as full submariners just like you.
Jimmy Carter: Yeah… Eleanor?
Rosalynn Smith: Yes dear?
Jimmy Carter: Is the harvest going well?
Rosalynn Smith: Not really, the peanuts are growing slower than I expected but, I think we will get a good harvest soon. The weather is just not as conducive to peanut growing as it did years prior due to the heat.
Jimmy Carter: Sigh ever since Dad died, things just got worse and worse.
Rosalynn Smith: What is on your mind?
Jimmy Carter: My job in the Navy is growing more and more demanding, they want me to teach scores upon scores of recruits, I think the state government is planning for a recruitment drive due to the amount of people. I also feel… like I have people watching me.
Rosalynn Smith: Watching you?
Jimmy Carter: I don't know, I just get this feeling. I didn't have it before a few years ago but it has gotten more and more intense lately. Ever since I started talking to my students about Brown V. Board and the recent mass shootings and insubordination from within our ranks against my fellow nonwhite officers and crew, I have gotten reprimands from the staff and felt that people were giving me bad looks.
Rosalynn Smith: You always were compassionate to your fellow man, Its why I married you! But I do think that you should maybe watch out on what you say in public.
Jimmy Carter: I am probably going to meet with Blake van Leer later this week, and then with Hugh on Friday to discuss the situation on the farm. After that I am thinking of retiring from the Navy to focus on our business. I cannot let my Dad’s legacy fail.
Rosalynn Smith: You always were compassionate to your fellow man, It's why I married you! But I do think that you should maybe watch out for what you say in public. thinking of retiring from the Navy to focus on our business. I cannot let my Dad’s legacy fail.
Jimmy Carter: You think so?
Rosalynn Smith: I know you and what you are capable of.
Jimmy Carter: … Thank you.
As the Carters make their meal, a black van sits out of sight monitoring the Carter residence…
