I was talking with friends about this and I was saying that there are certain dishes that if I’m going to a restaurant for the first time I’ll almost always order as it’s a good way to judge if the place is any good or not.
For example, in an Italian restaurant, I’ll always order Cacio e Pepe, or if it’s not on the menu for some reason I’ll order a Carbonara.
Similarly with any place that does burgers, I’ll always order like the most basic cheeseburger.
If an Italian restaurant can’t make a good Cacio e Pepe or a Carbonara, or a burger place can’t make a good basic Cheeseburger then I don’t want to do business with them, they’re a failure 😂

Hello, I'm a FTM and I have a lot of anxiety raising a bilingual (English/Spanish) child. I'm English speaking (with a French language and lit degree, so I know the process of LEARNING a language, but I rather my child just KNOW the language vs learn it). My boyfriend is 1st generation Mexican where Spanish was his first language but he mostly speaks English now UNLESS around his mom who only knows Spanish. We live in an English speaking country, but I live where there are a lot of Spanish speakers.
I find it very important that my child learns Spanish to communicate with her dad's side, so she will start a Spanish immersion daycare when she's about 3.5 months old. I'm planning she stay at this group home daycare till she graduates Pre K. We also visit my boyfriend's side every other weekend. And he speaks a bit of Spanish to her at home, but honestly since I'm only a level A1 with Spanish me and him don't communicate between each other using the language.
My question is: Will 5ish years make my kid fluent enough to speak with her family? Especially if she continues to use it on and off throughout her whole life. She just won't use it as much though when she starts grade school where English will be used 90% of the time after that.
BONUS QUESTION: What can we do about teaching her how to read and write Spanish post Pre K? My boyfriend has never written formal Spanish and can only read grade level Spanish. I feel like with my French background I can help a bit with the grammar but overall I'm useless. Should we look into Spanish immersion charter schools to continue her language learning journey or let her decide when she's older if she wants to continue that path with Spanish? I mean my boyfriend just speaking it has helped us navigate Mexico with no issues so it's not a pressing matter if she learns how to read and write it I guess.

2024.05.29 05:51 blackblaque boss charged me $14 for two small smoothie cups and even accused me of trying to underpay, didn’t give me chance to explain

i work in a restaurant. we are allowed certain food and drink for free. i was told that smoothies WITHOUT protein are allowed to be drank free of charge.
after pouring a smoothie order, there was some extra i seen two extremely ripe bananas almost rotten and added them to the blender and added some milk and frozen strawberry and poured two cups for my coworker and i…
that’s when my boss came up to me asking if it was for an order and i said no it’s for me and (coworker). he then proceeds to tell me that we have to pay and that smoothies aren’t free. i tried to tell him i was told that the protein free ones we are allowed and he says no we never told you that… which is weird because i 100% observe people making smoothies for themselves that aren’t even extras from orders just personal!
anyways, so the order gets paid for. by the way he did that “did you pay yet” after literally two minutes. i ring it up for two “custom smoothies” coming to $11 and change AFTER employee discount added. he then comes and says that since it was leftovers from a smoothie then i should had rang it in as that and the total is actually $14 and not $11
didn’t give me a chance to explain why i rang it up as a custom smoothie just berated me telling me to “stop playing with the system” and that he’s fired people for this before and then went around telling the rules to everyone.
i rang it up as a custom smoothie because the bananas and berries and milk i added is not a menu smoothie item. i genuinely was not trying to steal from my job and after the fact my coworkers told me that has never happened to them while drinking smoothie. of course they didn’t speak up when the boss was present… anyways i just really don’t like the way that situation was handled. he was also ranting about how “costly” smoothies are but for $14 or even $11 for what was made was more than profit! he just talked over me and then walked away after angerly demanding the difference to be paid.
i am a great worker, performing well and showing up on time everyday and coming in earlier and staying later when asked and he still made sure to penny pinch me and make me feel like garbage in front of other employee and customer.

2024.05.29 04:20 alyxandreeea89 Airport waiter made my jaw drop

So my husband and I were flying back from Cabo last week. We get through security about an hour and a half early before our flight and he lets me know that he’s getting pretty hungry, on the verge of hangry. We’re walking through the airport and it looks like zero options… until we find this little bar and grill and immediately go sit down. The waiter comes over and asks us if we want a drink; my husband and I kind of look at each other with the same look as if to say “one last margarita?” So we each order one and the waiter says “double? triple?” My husband immediately says double on habit since we have just left a week at an all inclusive resort where ‘doubles’ are the norm.
I glance at the menu, tell my husband what to order for me and then head to the restroom. While on my way there I do some quick math and think to myself “we’re about to spend $100 on lunch…”
Drinks and food arrived pretty quickly. Neither was anything special, I mean, I certainly don’t have high expectations for an airport restaurant although I have had some decent meals in airports before.
The waiter brings us our check and it was…. $165…. The bill was in pesos but the bottom had the total amount in USD as well. This is what we ordered: fish and chips, fish tacos, chips and salsa and two double margaritas. I ended up calculating the price of the drinks because I figured that was our downfall… it ended up being $45 PER drink. Fine, I blame that part on my husband for ordering doubles lol certainly not happy about how much the bill was especially considering the food was mediocre at best.
So once we got our receipt there wasn’t a place to leave a tip, just a signature line. So my husband threw down some cash on the table.. I didn’t ask how much.
About 90 seconds after he picked up the receipt and cash the waiter comes back over. He says this directly to my husband “Was there a problem with your service? Your total was $165 and most people tip at least 10%”. When I say my jaw dropped so quickly… I was also not going to hide the look on my face. And since he was speaking directly to my husband, I let him handle this. Also, I’m not a Karen or someone who wants/enjoys confrontation with people. My husband let him know that he left him all the cash he had left which was $7. The waiter just said “it’s okay” and walked away but BOY did he leave an impression. Just an FYI the “service” this waiter is referring to is taking our order and bringing us our check. Someone else brought us our drinks and our food.
We pretty much downed our drinks and then gtfo of there. My husband said he felt bad and wondered if he should go back and give him more money. I told him that’s probably what the guy wanted from that situation. We talked about this for at least 30 min after. It’s wild to think that people are relying on tips for their wages and have the balls to address a customer about it. This is obviously an issue between an employee and employer but customers are getting dragged into it. I also think there’s probably a huge difference in wages between US and Mexico but either way, I don’t want to feel guilty about leaving an optional tip. If I was in America and a waitress or waiter complained about the tip to me, I’m not sure if I could be nice or silent about it.

Me: I said "well, where is it"
Son: You didn't say any of those words. ):
Me: oh, my bad. Pues. Dónde. Está.
Son: See, that's what I know.
I don't have the heart to tell him yet about dialects, lmao. Alas.

Regardless of what people say about theft, it's an overly bossy behavior and overreaction that there's no excuse for. I've seen restaurant tablets before enough to know that whoever is working can see which delivery driver is coming for which order so if and when that driver confirms pick up, it will reflect on their end of the app unless THEY are not paying attention or not keeping up. Mostly all restaurants have security cameras that will show who is coming in and record that activity so IF there are ever any incidents of theft it will be recorded.
Otherwise, it's just random every day workers trying to act like micro-managing supervisors and managers when they're not authorized to act out a "supervisory" role in their own jobs, much less anyone else's. If theft was that serious an issue, it would have to result in every single restaurant employee asking every single third party delivery driver to confirm the pick-up in front of them every time, but they don't do that. Only some restaurant employees do it only because some restaurant employees sometimes feel like acting as if they should be "authorized" to treat outside delivery drivers like suspects and that's all. Just as some dogs get too "nippy" or "snippy" toward just anyone passing by when being taken out for a walk unless you muzzle them or can more effectively "train" them out of that habit, so some employees working at some restaurants will get a little too "nippy", "snippy", or "uppity" for their own good unless you "muzzle" them or train them to understand that regardless of the fact that just because unfortunate, unfair things sometimes happen on the job and even just in life in general, that's still not the way to treat people on a regular, everyday basis. I'm thankful that in my market, I don't deal with that behavior with most restaurant employees most of the time. And the few who have gone so far as to try get away with belittling me like that no longer have their jobs either because it just didn't "work out" before very long without me ever having to say or do anything, because I anonymously reported them to the restaurant later for unprofessional, uncivilized behavior or, as it was in one case at a Red Robin last year, the ACTUAL supervisor, not the employee trying to ACT like a "Boss", walked out just in time to catch the last of her employee crossing the line by trying to physically prevent me from taking an order that I obviously had showing up in the proper delivery app on my phone. I saw that manager step out just in time to look at her employee like "What is she doing?!?"
She didn't deal with that employee on the spot but was embarrassed for quite a few days afterwards by the fact that someone she hired was behaving that way out in their lobby. When I returned to pick up from that same restaurant days and weeks later, it was all back to "hands off", no questions asked as long as you showed them the order in the app, which I'd always done without having to be asked. In other words, it was all back to treating all online customers and delivery drivers as "innocent unless PROVEN guilty." Even the manager handed a couple of orders off to me in a very nice, courteous way, and by the third time I showed up to pick up from them, the employee who'd previously tried to get away with acting like the "arresting officer" WITHOUT any proof that any offense had been committed or would be committed by this particular driver in front of her was no longer working for them. I noticed that just a couple of pick-ups before that employee's final absence, however, she was no longer working without the manager present. The manager of course was handling it very smoothly by making it look like she was just filling in and working with rather than over this other employee, but I know that she was mostly doing it to curb the aggressive tendencies this employee had started to show until she could find someone else to replace her - she was not going to have employees stooping so low as to almost initiate physical altercations with others either in or outside of their establishment, especially when the one who was caught that one time was doing it with no evidence to back up her suspicions. And it was ridiculous that that employee had entitled herself to behave that way given the number of times I'd been in these places to pick up and deliver before without incident. To suddenly be treated like a "suspect" because of some others' behaviors that I couldn't have even known about is and was insulting. - and about as ridiculous as the police themselves showing up to start following people around just because there are still other people "out there" going to jail on a regular basis - like, yeah, we're just choosing random people to watch because even though we have no evidence to believe they're in trouble or ever would be, there are always other people in the same city and state who commit crimes. So, might as well just start "watching" and following whoever...
One of the last times more recently that a non-supervisory restaurant employee tried to entitle himself to enough of a "supervisory" role to belittle me into being HIS little underling, I handled it even more cleverly since it was UberEATS rather than Door Dash or Grubhub. Rather than either allow myself to succumb to being demeaned by "obeying" his "command" OR risking that he would give me a bad rating for arguing or giving him a little resistance or "kickback" before confirming the order so I could deliver it, I decided neither to get down on his level by arguing nor hurt my ratings by just plain cancelling. Instead, as he clamped down on the bag, refusing so hard to let me take the order that I could hear it cracking or denting one of the containers in the bag, I calmly went out to my car and PROVED that I really was an actual Uber driver to pick up this ACTUAL order for an ACTUAL customer by reporting him to Uber through support, which I figured would in turn be given as "feedback" to the restaurant. All I had to do was chat in to support to say that even though I automatically and *voluntarily* showed the customer name and order items to the employee as soon as I went inside and, right as I thought he was going to give me the order, verified the customer name and order items, he became aggressive and physically refused to let me take the bag so that I could leave for delivery. As a result of texting into UberEATS about that, yes, that order was cancelled BUT Uber cancelled it for me, saying they were sorry that I had that experience, and in much less than the actual time it would have taken me to pick up and deliver that food, gave me partial pay for that one and almost immediately after that, I got another order to accept, pick up and deliver from another nearby restaurant for just as much if not more $$ than what I was otherwise going to get for that other one. And, yes, the next employee that I picked up from at the next restaurant was much saner with MUCH better manners. I think that more than some employees are jealous over what we vs. they get paid, some are jealous because we can pick and choose our own schedules when they can't; others are just having personal issues outside of work or running into problems with not being well-liked at work or even just accidentally making a string of mistakes that cause them to get "noticed" as not quite so competent - for which trying to FORCE a third party driver to confirm the order in front of them as if the DRIVER might be a THIEF is just a last-ditch effort to save their own jobs because it's not really going so well for them behind the counter or from back in the kitchen... Or, in spite of the fact that most restaurants want us to show them our orders most of the time, maybe some of them really don't like it that some of us voluntarily show them the order on the phone because they feel they "already know" enough to not have to be "told" or "reminded." And, although this hasn't been the norm, I've occasionally had some running so slow on "downtime" that just as soon as I showed up, they didn't even want to see the order on my phone, just plopped the order out for me like, no, we don't need to know...just take it because this is all we have for now and we already saw you coming. And, although this also hasn't been the norm, I still know that if they have their apps up and running properly on their tablets and are keeping up, they'll know who's coming for what since I've even had some of them call me by name as soon as I went in when if it wasn't for the delivery app on their tablet, they wouldn't have known who I was. At one restaurant in particular that I've Door Dashed orders to and from numerous times, I've seen enough of "dasher waiting" with my name clearly showing on thier restaurant tablet, too, to know that as soon as I confirm the order, that status changes, so, no, they don't need to force or "boss" anyone into "confirming" in front of them unless THEY are having problems that they don't want someone else knowing about. And, yes, properly working third party apps on restaurant tablets make noises to indicate to workers when orders are coming in, what delivery drivers are accepting those orders, when those delivery drivers are arriving for those orders, if those drivers are cancelling those orders, and when those orders are being confirmed as picked up so unless the restaurant workers are screwing around at their own jobs, they have no reason to try to boss or belittle any of the rest of us into anything. The app will pretty much do and show all steps for them up to the time we leave their premises and then the rest is on us. We don't need employees treating us as if we have to be their subordinates when our OWN delivery companies and customers are already able to monitor and rate us from start to finish on every order we choose to take for them. Much as with a regular job, we also don't start doing anything with any of these third party delivery companies without passing background and motor vehicle checks that will also be run on us again on the anniversary date of our delivery start date each year. So, unless these restaurant employees who are trying to scrutinize our individual pick-ups are being subjected to even more scrutiny than that when starting and continuing to work at their own jobs, we don't need to accept their efforts to try to force us into "submission." Third party delivery drivers are independent contractors who, for food delivery purposes, are set up to partner WITH them, but are not beneath them as some individual employees seem to think that they should be.
One of the most recent ones that I'll be dealing with by way of either a Google review OR an anonymous note left or sent to the manager was from a Mexican restaurant that I'd picked up and delivered from a number of times before without incident. Up until more recently, it was all VERY friendly, very courteous, thanks for showing us the name on the order, here you go and thanks for taking the order to the customer type of deal. And, yes, of course every order I ever picked up from them always went right to the customer with no problem. More recently, however, I was "greeted" upon arrival to that same restaurant by a whole different type of employee who was acting like she was some kind of super high-raking, high-profile, HOT MAMA "authorized" to "investigate" every last "little" thing with this "little" driver coming in for delivery as a possible "SUSPECT." No police were present, no she was not trained or "authorized" to act like the police herself, there was not yet any red and blue lights flashing on her behalf or in her favor and there was no actual evidence that a crime had been or was about to be committed - but in the *split second* that she didn't think I was going to confirm the order for HER like she thought I should, she instead started trying to pressure me into showing her my ID. I got the order without actually having to do that, but if she isn't gone from that job position by the next time I get another delivery opportunity for that same restaurant, she will be at least not long after I come up with a clever "review" to leave either on Google or typed note posted to the door for the actual owner or manager in regards to that incident, noting, too, of course, that I'm leaving that for the person who is the ACTUAL owner or manager of that business, not for the one who just THINKS she's entitled to PUT herself in that position, especially when that much of a MICRO-manager makes a very, very bad manager anyway - and also for a very uncivilized, unprofessional business overall.
