2024.05.13 16:14 Leather_Focus_6535 The currently 124 offenders executed by the state of Oklahoma since the 1970s (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk) [part 1, cases 1-62]

This is the list that I wrote for Oklahoma's execution roster since the nationwide reinstatement of capital punishment in the late 1970s. Something that should be mentioned is that given the nature of many death penalty related crimes, many of the descriptions contain very disturbing details. Please read at your own risk.
Florida's list is next, and I'll post my list for Texas once I've completed it. With Texas, I've currently finished 464 entries out of the 587 cases to date. That will probably take 7 or 8 posts for it all to be released, so I'll probably do two posts a day with Texas to avoid spamming the sub. At the end of this year, I'll repost the states that have conducted further executions with the updated information.
As with Missouri and Virginia, Reddit's maximum character count limitations forced me to divide Oklahoma's list into two separate parts. Here is the link to part 2.
The currently 124 executed offenders, cases 1 to 62:
1. Charles Coleman (~1950s-1990, lethal injection): A month after he was released on parole in 1979, Coleman broke into a house. While sacking it for any valuables, the homeowner’s brother and sister in law, 68 year old John and 62 year old Roxie Seward, walked in on him and were both shot dead. Coleman stole Roxie’s purse, several packets of frozen meat, and the homeowner’s watch during the burglary, and was arrested shortly afterwards. However, Coleman managed to escape custody, and went on a rampage that involved several burglaries, auto thefts, slitting the throat of a policeman in a failed murder attempt, the shooting death of 49 year old Russell Lewis Jr. in a carjacking, and the abduction of a deputy. The kidnapped deputy was rescued following an armed standoff with other police officers. Coleman had an extensive history of animal cruelty, armed robberies, assaults, and carrying concealed weapons convictions dating back to when he was 11 years old. He was also heavily suspected in the murder of his teenage girlfriend’s father, but was acquitted by the courts despite the prosecution’s strong belief in his guilt.
2. Robyn Parks (1977-1992, lethal injection): During a gas station robbery, Parks shot and killed Abdullah Ibrahim, a 24 year old Bangladeshi immigrant that worked as the attendant. According to Parks, he murdered Ibrahim for catching him using a stolen credit card.
3. Olan Randle (1980-1992, lethal injection): Randle invaded a home and shot the occupants, 41 year old Robert Swinford, Sinford's fiance 42 year old Averil Bourque, and Bourque's friend 38 year old Julia Lovejoy, dead. He took a pocket knife and several watches from the victims.
4. Thomas Grasso (~1970s(?)-1995, lethal injection): While living in Oklahoma, Grasso strangled 87 year old Hilda Johnson, the best friend of his girlfriend's grandmother, to death with her Christmas lights. He took $8 from her purse, several coins that added up to $4, and a television set that he sold for $125. Grasso then moved to New York, and strangled 81 year old Leslie Holtz for his social security check. The trialing arrangements caused some controversy, as the New York governors at the time were anti death penalty, and tried to prevent Grasso's extradition in favor of giving him a life sentence in their jurisdiction. Grasso had several previous convictions for theft and was fired multiple times for stealing from his jobs.
5. Roger Stafford (~1974(?)-1995, lethal injection): Stafford was condemned for killing at least 9 people in two separate robbery incidents with his brother and ex wife, though his ex wife claimed that he was involved with as many as 34 murders nationwide. The first convicted incident was when he and the ex wife carjacked and fatally shot a couple, 38 year old Melvin and 31 year old Linda Lorenz, and their son, 12 year old Richard. A few weeks after the Lorenz murders, Stafford stormed a restaurant and gunned down 6 employees, 56 year old Isaac Freeman, 43 year old Louis Zacarias, 17 year old Anthony Tew, 17 year old David Lindsey, 16 year old David Salsman, and 15 year old Terri Horst. One of Stafford's additional attributed victims was 20 year old Jimmy Berry, who was killed in the hold up of an Alabaman McDonalds, but he wasn't charged by the state due to his death sentences in Oklahoma.
6. Robert Brecheen (1983-1995, lethal injection): Breechen was involved in a feud over money with 59 year old Mary Stubbs and her husband. In an attempt to take what he perceived was owed to him, Breechen carried out a night time burglary of their home. While rummaging through the house, Breechen stumbled upon old Marie in her living room and shot her to death. The gunshots and screams awoke her husband, and he chased him away with his own gun.
7. Benjamin Brewer (1978-1996, lethal injection): Brewer raped his neighbor, 20 year old Karen Stapleton, in her home and stabbed her to death
8. Steven Hatch (1979-1996, lethal injection): Hatch and another assailant, Glen Ake, forced themselves inside the home that Richard Dougass, a 43 year old reverend, shared with his wife, 36 year old Marilyn, and their two children, 16 year old Brooks and 12 year old Lesile. The pair tied up the family and raped Lesile in front of her parents and brother. All four family members were shot, and Hatch and Ake ran off with $43 and the parents’ wedding rings. Richard and Marilyn were both killed in the shootings, while their children survived the attack. Ake was also initially condemned for the attack, but his sentence was overturned and resentenced to life following mental health concerns, and passed away from undisclosed natural causes in 2011.
9. Scott Carpenter (1994-1997, lethal injection): In a convenience store robbery, Carpenter stabbed the owner, 56 year old A. J. Kelley, in the neck, and hid the body in the minnow room. He filled his truck with $37 worth of gas from the pumps and drove away from the scene. His execution caused some controversy, as it was reported that Carpenter gasped and spasmed for 11 minutes after being injected.
10. Michael Long (1997-1998, lethal injection): Enraged that his coworker, 24 year old Sheryl Graber, refused him sex and started screaming for help, he stabbed her over 31 times. Long also shot and killed her son, 5 year old Andrew, for being a witness.
11. Stephen Wood (1992-1998, lethal injection): While heavily intoxicated, Wood stabbed two other homeless men, 46 year old Charles Stephen and 34 year old Charles Von Johnson, dozens of times each. He was given a life sentence for both of their murders. During his incarceration, Robert Brigden, a 59 year old former minister that was serving a 40 year sentence for molesting several girls between the ages of 4-14 in his congregation, moved into his unit after refusing to go into protective custody. Woods killed Brigden in a stabbing attack, and his sentence was escalated to death by the courts for it.
12. Tuan Anh Nguyen (~1982-1998, lethal injection): By all accounts, Nguyen was jealously possessive over his wife, 21 year old Donna. During one of their arguments over his behavior, he stabbed Donna, her 6 year old nephew Joseph White, and her 3 year old niece Amanda White, in their home and left the bodies to be found by the children’s parents. He fled to Arizona, groomed a 14 year old girl into an illicit “relationship”, and impregnated her. After he convinced her to move in with him, Nguyen physically and sexually abused the girl until she fled and went to the local police for help. Nguyen was then deported back to Oklahoma to face trial for Donna and the White children’s slayings, and was sentenced to death for them.
13. John Duvall (1986-1998, lethal injection): During a fight with his wife, 30 year old Donna, Duvall stabbed and suffocated her to death with a pillow.
14. John Castro Sr. (1983-1999, lethal injection): Castro carjacked Beulah Cox, a 31 year old Oklahoma State University student, after she picked him up hitchhiking and shot her to death. A few months later, Castro held up a restaurant with an empty pistol, and attacked the manger, 29 year old Rhonda Pappan, after forcing her to open the register. During their struggle, Pappan was fatally stabbed, and he took off with her purse. During his mid teens, Castro was allegedly molested by his mother. Castro's attorneys made the argument that his glimpses of Cox's buttocks reminded him of his mother's reported abuse, and he was triggered into attacking her for it.
15. Sean Sellers (1985-1999, lethal injection): In 1985, a then 15 year old Sellers tried to buy beer from a convenience store, but the clerk, 32 year old Robert Bower, denied him due to being underaged at the time. Sellers gunned him down in a fit of rage. A year later, Sellers shot and killed his mother, 32 year old Vonda Bellofatto, and stepfather, 43 year old Paul, in their sleep. Due to being 16 at the time of his conviction, Sellers remains the youngest condemned offender to have his sentence carried out in the post Furman era. He also attracted national media attention for claiming that his crimes were the result of demonic possession.
16. Scotty Moore (1983-1999, lethal injection): Moore was fired from a motel for undisclosed reasons. In retaliation, Moore and a cousin (whom he was dating at the time), assaulted the motel, and gunned down the desk clerk, 42 year old Alex Fernandez. According to court documents, the pair took a total of $97 in the robbery.
17. Norman Newsted (1984-1999, lethal injection): Newsted tricked Lawrence Buckley, a 26 year old cab driver, into picking him up. He shot Buckley dead and took his wallet. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Newsted placed the body inside the cab, and drove it into a creek near a local church. Despite his best efforts, Buckley’s cab and remains were discovered a day later by the church’s pastor.
18. Cornel Cooks (1982-1999, lethal injection): Cooks and his accomplice broke into the home of 87 year old Jennie Ridling. She was gagged, raped, and suffocated to death with gauze wrappings. According to autopsy reports, the pair abused her for over 2 hours. They then sacked the house for any valuables and left with her checkbook.
19. Bobby Ross (1983-1999, lethal injection): While robbing an inn, Ross fatally shot a police officer, 30 year old Steve Mahan, that tried to intervene.
20. Malcolm Johnson (~1970s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Johnson invaded the apartment of 76 year old Ura Thompson and sexually assaulted her. Thompson either died from having her chest compounded during the abuse or was suffocated by Johnson’s hands covering her nose. He seized several possessions such as furs, typewriters, purse, watch, rings, and a hand mirror, which were discovered by police in his residence during an unrelated investigation of a firearms possession charge. Johnson had an extensive criminal history, which included several convictions of rape, armed robberies, and burglaries. The case attracted controversy when it was discovered that the lead chemist in the investigation misconducted several of her other cases, and forged some of the evidence used in the trial. Despite the other overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Johnson’s supporters took the opportunity to push a narrative of his innocence.
21. Gary Walker (~1960s-2000, lethal injection): Walker abducted, raped, and murdered at least 5 women, 36 year old Margaret Lydick, 35 year old Jane Hilburn, 32 year old Janet Jewell, 25 year old Valerie Shaw-Hartzell, and 24 year old DeRonda Roy, and non fatally assaulted several other women and teenage girls. The victims were mostly strangled to death with their bras and panties. Some of them were forced to withdraw hundreds of dollars from ATMs before they were killed. He also strangled a man, 63 year old Eddie Cash, with an electrical cord while robbing his home. Walker had dozens of previous convictions for burglary, carjacking, drug possession, and carrying concealed weapons. Some of his earliest arrests occurred when he was a teenager.
22. Michael Roberts (~1988-2000, lethal injection): A career burglar, Roberts was condemned for murder of 80 year old Lula Brooks. She was raped and her throat was slit by an intruder in her home. Roberts' death sentence and execution has been contested, as he was convicted on his later recounted testimony alone. He claimed that the investigators tricked him into confessing with the promise of a plea deal that was allegedly withheld from him.
23. Kelly Rogers (1990-2000, lethal injection): Rogers’ girlfriend lured 21 year old Karen Lauffenburger into her apartment with a fake pizza order. They accosted her when she arrived with the delivery. After the couple forced Lauffenburger to hand to over the $40 she earned from the night's pizza deliveries and withdraw $175 from an ATM, Rogers raped and stabbed her to death. The body was left in Lauffenburger’s apartment and was found by her boyfriend.
24. Ronald Boyd (1986-2000, lethal injection): During a robbery spree of several gas stations and supermarkets, Boyd engaged in a shootout with the responding officers. A Master Patrolman, 32 year old Richard Riggs, was killed in the exchange.
25. Charles Foster (~1980s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Foster suspected a grocery store owner, 74 year old Claude Wiley, of making sexual advances at his wife. He arranged for her to entice Wiley to their home with an order. When he arrived with the delivery, Foster stabbed and bludgeoned him to death with a baseball bat. He a history of convictions involving threats and violence, though my sources didn’t disclose any specific details.
26. James Robedeaux (1978-2000, lethal injection): In 1978, Robedeaux strangled his first wife, 30 year old Linda, and plead guilty to a second degree murder charges. He was released after serving 6 out of a 25 year sentence despite an escape attempt. In the following year, he began a relationship with 37 year old Nancy McKinney while he married a different woman. During an argument, Robedeaux beat McKinney to death, dismembered her body with a saw and machete, and scattered the remains across the state. While being investigated for McKinney's murder, he was arrested for choking and beating his estranged second wife. The cases were incidental and kept separate by the courts.
27. Roger Berget (~1985-2000, lethal injection): Berget carjacked and abducted 33 year old Rick Patterson with an accomplice, and shot him dead. He also admitted to the beating death of a roommate, 40 year old James Meadows, on the behalf of the man's wife. As a trivial side note, Berget's brother Rodney was executed in 2018 by the state of South Dakota for killing a prison guard [for more information, please see Rodney Berget's entry under the South Dakota section of my states with less then 10 executions post].
28. William Bryson (1988-2000, lethal injection): To collect a $300,000 life insurance policy, Marilyn Plantz recruited her boyfriend Byrson and his friend to kill her husband, 33 year old James. Byrson and his friend ambushed Plantz in his house as he was coming home from work and beat him to death with a baseball bat. With the intentions of staging an accident, Marilyn ordered the pair to burn the body in the couple's pickup truck.
29. Gregg Braun (1989-2000, lethal injection): Across several states, Braun shot and killed 4 women, 48 year old Geraldine Valdez, 31 year old Gwendolyn Miller, 28 year old Mary Rains, 27 year old Barbara Kochendorfer, and one man, 54 year old Pete Spurrier, while robbing stores.
30. George Wallace (~1970s-2000, lethal injection): Known as "the Mad Paddler" due to his habit of spanking abducted preteen and teenage boys with a wooden paddle, Wallace kidnapped his victims by posing as a police officer. After duping his targets into thinking that they were being arrested, Wallace restrained them with handcuffs and leg chains. The captives were then sexually abused and shot or stabbed to death. His crimes were exposed when an 18 year old man he abducted escaped from him despite being shot and stabbed numerous times. By his own admission, Wallace murdered 18 year old Thomas Reed, 15 year old William Domer, 14 year old Mark McLaughlin, 14 year old Jeffrey Foster, and 12 year old Alonzo Cade.
31. Eddie Trice (1987-2001, lethal injection): Trice snuck into the home of 84 year old Ernestine Jones and raped her. After he beat Jones to death with numbchucks, he terrorized and extorted her cognitively disabled son of $500 with threats of killing him if he told anyone of the murder. The son was also assaulted with a hammer, and he received injuries to his right eye, right cheekbone, and his right forearm.
32. Wanda Allen (~1981-2001, lethal injection): In 1981, Allen got into a fight with her live in girlfriend, 21 year old Dedra Pettus, and shot her dead. Despite giving a bungled story about her being accidentally killed in a shootout with Pettus’ ex boyfriend to the investigators, Allen managed to secure a 4 year sentence for manslaughter after pleading guilty to a plea deal, and was released after serving two years. While incarcerated, she started dating a fellow inmate, 29 year old Gloria Leathers, and continued their relationship outside of prison. The couple’s relationship was marred with extreme domestic violence on Allen’s end. In one incident, Allen struck Leathers with a rake. In 1989, while they were arguing in front of a shopping center, Allen shot and killed Leathers. Leathers herself also had history of violence, and had a conviction for stabbing a woman to death. Allen and her defense team tried to use Leathers’ previous convictions to make a self defense argument, but that was shot down by the courts.
33. Floyd Medlock (1990-2001, lethal injection): 7 year old Katherine Busch went to visit her family's old apartment, which Medlock was residing in, by herself. Busch knocked on the door and Medlock let her inside after she begged for food. He then choked and sexually assaulted the girl, dunked her head in a toilet bowl, and stabbed her to death. The body was hidden in a nearby dumpster. Busch's grandmothers were staunch pro capital punishment and anti death penalty activists respectively, and their public feud over Medlock's sentence and execution attracted some media attention. Medlock also had an extensive criminal history despite being only 19 at the time of Busch's murder, and was previously arrested several times for indecent exposure, arson, armed robbery, and marijuana possession.
34. Dion Smallwood (1992-2001, lethal injection): Smallwood walked into the home of his ex girlfriend's adoptive stepmother, 68 year old Lois Frederick, without invitation. He had a tumultuous and often violent relationship with her adopted stepdaughter that she strongly opposed, and they broke up under her pressure. After an argument, Smallwood knocked Frederick unconscious with a croquet mallet, locked her in a car, and burned her alive in it.
35. Mark Fowler (1985-2001, lethal injection): To get back at his ex employers for firing him, Fowler and his partner, Billy Fox, stormed a supermarket that he used to work out. The pair rounded up 3 employees, Chumpon Chaowasin, a 44 year old Thai immigrant, 33 year old Rick Cast, and 27 year old John Barrier, at gun point. She was raped, trapped in the trunk of a car, and burned alive in it. Although she was rescued, Hawley died from her injuries 6 hours later. The pair stole Hawley's wedding ring and Lafevers gifted it to a stripper. As Hawley's nephew was a Colorado state senator, her murder gained some attention from media outlets.
38. Dorsie Jones Jr. (1979-2001, lethal injection): While drinking at a bar, a barmaid chastised Jones for carrying an unconcealed gun. He shot at her in a fit of rage, but missed and injured his female companion instead. He initially attacked Ginger with a hatchet, but turned to shooting when she fought back.

Terrance James (1983-2001, lethal injection): While awaiting trial for a theft of government property charge, James and two accomplices strangled a fellow inmate, 25 year old Mark Berry, with wire out of their suspicions of him being a snitch. They then hung the body in an attempt to make it look like a suicide. Berry was another party in the theft of government property case, and James and his accomplices believed that it was his testimony that got them arrested.
43. Vincent Johnson (1991-2001, lethal injection): Johnson gunned down 44 year old Shirley Mooneyham in her home. The prosecution believed that Mooneyham's boyfriend arranged the killing to collect a life insurance policy, but he was acquitted at trial.
44. Jerald Harjo (~1980s-2001, lethal injection): Harjo snuck into the bedroom of 64 year old Ruth Porter, raped her, and suffocated her with a pillowcase. He then snatched Porter's car keys and drove off with her van. His past criminal history was extensive, and was in prison numerous times for burglary and autotheft.
45. Jack Walker (1988-2001, lethal injection): Disgruntled with the custody dispute over their then 3 month old son, Walker stabbed his ex girlfriend, 17 year old Shelly Ellison, and her uncle, 30 year old Donald, 32 and 11 times with an ice pick during a confrontation at their home.

48. Sahib Lateef Al-Mosawi (1992-2001, lethal injection): Following a dispute over their newborn son's name, Al-Mosawi's estranged wife, 26 year old Inaam Al-Nashi, fled to the apartment of her uncle, 45 year old Mohammed. Al-Mosaw attacked the pair in the apartment and stabbed them to death. Inaam's sister was also stabbed, but she managed to escape with her life. The couple and their families were refugees from Iraq that were displaced by the First Persian Gulf War, and they fled into the United States.
49. John Romano (1985-2002, lethal injection): Romano and his accomplice David Woodruff robbed and murdered two of their acquaintances. One of the victims, 63 year old Lloyd Thompson, was attacked in his apartment. Thompson was held down by the pair while they stabbed him 22 times and served his spinal cord. The other victim, 52 year old Roger Sarfaty, was tied up, beaten, stabbed 5 times, and strangled to death in a jewelry store he owned. In the robberies, Romano and Woodruff stole several pieces of jewelry from Sarfaty, and took most of Thompson’s quarter collection.
50. David Woodruff (1985-2002, lethal injection): As mentioned under John Romano's entry, Woodruff took part in the robbery murders of Lloyd Thompson and Roger Sarfaty.
51. Randall Cannon (1985-2002, lethal injection): Cannon assisted Loyd Lafevers in abducting, sexually assaulting, and burning Addie Hawley alive in her car. Although he was acquitted of molesting Hawley, Cannon was still condemned for his part in the kidnapping and murder.
52. Earl Frederick Sr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): Frederick beat Bradford Beck, a 41 year old veteran that was crippled during his service in the Vietnam war, to death in his home after befriending him. He ransacked the house and dumped Beck's body in a field. A second murder, the robbery and shooting death of a Texan man, 77 year old Shirley Fox, was also tied to him. However, authorities in Texas withheld from prosecuting Fredrick due to his death penalty trial and conviction in Oklahoma. Both Fox and Beck had physical disabilities, which led prosecutors to the conclusion that Frederick intentionally selected and depredated on disabled men.
53. Jerry McCracken (~1980s(?)-2002, lethal injection): McCracken and his accomplice shot up a bar, killed 3 patrons and the bartender, and made off with $350. The victims that lost their lives were 41 year old Carol McDaniels, 37 year old Timothy Sheets, 34 year old Steven Sheets, and 27 year old Tyrrell Boyd. Neill's boyfriend was given a life sentence for the robbery and murders, despite not being directly involved.
55. Ernest Carter Jr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): After being fired from an autoshop, Carter robbed it with an accomplice, and fatally shot a security guard, 35 year old Eugene Manowski. The pair stole the shop's tow truck, and later tried to burn it with Carter's girlfriend to destroy any traces of the crime. Carter was also previously accused of burning a friend to death in the previous year, but the charges were dismissed.
56. Daniel Revilla (1987-2003, lethal injection): While babysitting his girlfriend's son, 13 month old Mark Gomez, in their home, Revilla broke the boy’s ribs in a beating and scalded him with boiling water. When he brought the boy to a hospital, Revilla gave a story that he accidentally hit Gomez’s head with a door handle, which was quickly seen through by the staff. According to the accounts of his girlfriend and her family, Revilla was violently abusive to Gomez, and they recounted incidents of him trapping the boy in a kitchen drawer, dunking him in cold water, folding him into a pull up bed, and hanging him by his ankles with duct tape.
57. Bobby Fields (~1990s-2003, lethal injection): Fields shot and killed 77 year old Louise Schem while burglarizing her home. She had tried to shot him with her .25 calibre pistol, but he wrestled the gun away from her, and gunned her down with it. According to court documents, Fields had a previous robbery and assault conviction, and several arrests for drug possession.

In a fit of anger, he fatally shot 18 year old Alta Lang, and wounded two other partygoers. Due to the witnesses refusing to cooperate with the investigation and being unable to prove any calculated intentions, Hooker was given a manslaughter conviction, and released a few years later. After he was paroled, Hooker started dating Sylvia Stokes, and fathered several children with her. Their troubled relationship lasted for 8 years, and ended when Stokes filed a protection order against him. In retaliation, Hooker lured Stokes and her mother, 53 year old Durcilla Morgan, into his apartment and stabbed them both to death.
60. Scot Hain (~1980s-2003, lethal injection): Hain carjacked and abducted a couple, 27 year old Michael Houghton and 22 year old Laura Sanders. After taking $565 and some bags of clothing, he forced them into the trunk of their car at gunpoint, and burned them alive in it. He had several previous arrests for robbery, and was involved with a number of rapes and attempted kidnappings months before the Houghton and Sanders' murders.
61. Don Hawkins Jr. (1985-2003, lethal injection): Hawkins kidnapped 29 year old Linda Ann Thompson and her two daughters, aged 4 years old and 18 months old, from a mall. Although his original intentions were to ransom off Thompson and her children, Hawkins gang raped the captive woman with his cousin and his girlfriend's teenage nephew, and drowned her in a lake. Thompson's children were spared and simply left with a babysitter. Hawkins and his accomplice then went on a nation wide rampage with his accomplice that involved the abductions and rapes of several grown women and teenage girls, hanging 31 year old David Coupez of Colorado in his home while robbing him, and countless other robberies.
62. Larry Jackson (~1984-2003, lethal injection): In 1984, Jackson shot and killed his girlfriend, 19 year old Freda Washington. He accepted a plea deal that dumbed down the charges to second degree murder, and was given a 30 year sentence for it. During his incarceration, Jackson started a relationship with 29 year old Wendy Cade. Despite her promises of marriage after his release, Cade left him for another man, and they got engaged. When Jackson was assigned to a prison work crew, he snuck out and went to confront Cade. Reportedly, the two had bought alchool, cocaine, and cigerates together and had sex in Cade's apartment. However, they got into an argument, and he slashed Cade's throat and stabbed her 31 times with box cutters. Jackson then left with her jewelry, watch, and the keys to her jeep.

2024.05.09 20:11 1stDesponder Boomers Think Checks are Easier/Safer to use Over Debit/Credit Cards?

Another post on this subreddit reminded me of this.
I work retail and most of our patrons are boomers. I was cashing out a girl, when the boomer behind her caught sight of her putting her debit card into the POS system.
"I don't trust them credit cards! That's how you go into debt!"
She looks back at her, both of us slightly startled as we weren't expecting some random woman exclaiming her credit paranoia at us. "This isn't a credit card, it's a debit card."
I add, "And you only go into debt if you use your credit card beyond what you should."
"Well whatever! Why can't people just pay with cash like they used to! Credit cards can get hacked!"
The girl responds, "I just find it easier and safer to just use my card." (I didn't blame her, I also don't carry cash around, except for like $40 in case I'm somewhere without card systems.)
The boomer starts mumbling some things about how technology doesn't make crap easier and the usual boomer grumble, just barely audible enough to catch a word or two here and there, and the girl gives me a look, tells me to have a nice day, I return the sentiments and she leaves.
The boomer lady then waits until I'm done ringing up her $200+ worth of items to then pull out her big purse, rummage through it for like 30 seconds to finally pull out another smaller wallet type of bag. From that she pulls out a check book and begins writing things, and asking me questions about who to make it out to, "how much was that again?", etc. I then have to feed the check through the system, wait on it to verify, type in the account and routing info, etc. I usually throw the receipt in the bag, but she demanded I hand her the receipt so she can put it in her purse to balance her checkbook with....
TLDR: Why do Boomers think using checks are easier and safer than using debit/Credit cards?? Like, all your bank info is on that check, crafty individuals can alter them, and it takes much, MUCH longer to write them out, and then they STILL have to balance there checkbooks afterward. Like wtf do they not get?
EDIT: I love how my post about boomers thinking checks are the superior form of payment turned into debates and lessons about the sins of debit cards and how credit cards are the next best thing since Jesus, or how people are dumb for not using cash. I said CHECKS people. Jesus Christ lol

2024.05.04 21:37 Strmchsrxx1492 What are thr real Pro’s and Con’s of ITrust? There’s a lot of Bitcoin and Crypto IRA’s Who’s the better one bottom line.

At first glance Itrust appears to be a good option. There’s a few YouTubers who are really pushing it but those guys promote anything for sponsorship, but how good is this place really? Here’s a few questions for those of you already there. Here is what I’ve heard so far as the surprises after joining.
-Limited crypto selection. Selections are more on par with last cycle or before. They don’t even have Stacks, nor hardly any AI or Depin. It is 24x7. Big plus over an ETF.
At this stage a Bitcoin etf with no transaction fees for a few months is sounding better but if you got 20 yrs or more to retire then this option may work out. Most wave fees still, but soon it’s .25 per yr.

2024.04.24 23:25 Mister-420- 7 Lac and 75 Thousand Rupees were returned to the Owner

Jawed Hussain Baltistani from Gilgit Baltistan found a wallet containing 7 Lac and 75 thousand rupees cash, along with a checkbook and some keys. He diligently searched for the owner and returned the belongings to them. The owner, a tourist visiting to enjoy the spring blossom scenery in Gilgit Baltistan, must have been pleasantly surprised by such honesty in a country where, setting money aside, even people's lives are not always secure.
However, it's worth noting that this act of integrity is not an isolated incident in Gilgit Baltistan. Time and again, both tourists and locals have witnessed instances where lost items are returned, showcasing the community's inherent values of honesty and kindness. It's a testament to the unique spirit of Gilgit Baltistan that transcends mere material wealth. In fact, the only scenario where one might not recover their lost items is if an outsider were to stumble upon them. If you ever find yourself in the unfortunate situation of losing something in Baltistan, it's best to hope that a local comes across it, as their honesty, purity, and simplicity are truly unmatched elsewhere.

2024.04.20 21:42 Fit_Visual7359 How can I get my financially abuse husband to stop being so controlling?

He gives me a cash allowance each week. He reduced the amount to less now since he tild me that there isn’t much left in the joint account & that I ‘spend’ to much money.
He has threatened to take my name off the joint checking account for years. He doesn’t care if it’s for food or gas, he gets upset anytime I withdraw anything from the account.
He doesn’t give me enough to live off. Unfortunately I’m dependent on him as I’m currently unemployed I’m looking for a job though. I have multiple physical & mental disabilities too which makes getting & keeing a job impossible at times.
He usually pays all of my credit card bills late too on purpose to keep my credit low. He threatened to not put any money in the account now.
He also threatened to stop giving me money gor food. He said he’ll tske me to the store & I said hell no. I don’t want him telling me what to buy & rushing me too.
This is beyond ridiculous & way to extreme! He constantly complains that he doesn’t spend anything on himself hardly. He does. He smokes 2 packs a day.
He complained about owing the IRS over $10000 since 2000 I think. He finally got the payments down to 30000 & is now making weekly payments. He keeps telling me that we don’t have any money but I think he’s lying as we recently went on a trip to Japan for 11 days.
He used his airline points for the tickets but he used his credit cards for the hotels, taxis, food & other expenses.
Why go on a trip if we have no money? My friends think that he’s hiding money or spending it on another woman. He rarely discuss anything about finances with me.
Why is he like this? He used to pay off my credit cards when we had a high limit on pur cards & when his business was supposedly doing better before we declared bankruptcy in 2004.
I used to have access to the checkbook & now I don’t anymore. He’s getting worse!
Why is he like this? He doesn’t want me to go put or spend money on anything at all!
This isn’t right! He tried to guilt trip me last night ny telling me that he can’t go to this event he wanted to as it’d cost him $150. He is more reluctant now to eat out anywhere too.
He is such a penny pinching miser that he didn’t give me any money to spend in Japan. He actually stole $100 in yen out of my wallet there!
Why is he like this & how can I get him to stop being so controlling? He refuses to fix the a/c in my car now too as there’s supposedly no money to fix it. He doesn’t seem to care about my comfort at all.
He even refused to hire a plumber when MY shower & sink got clogged numerous times. He claimed he’d fix it, but it took him over a month to do it! He said to use his bathroom. I had to hire a plumber behind his back. Fortunately it didn’t cost me as much as I thought it would.
He even yelled at me for going to the dentists & the doctors for necessary things. He refuses to give me his credit card usually so I need to have him pay for bills over the phone which is humiliating.
He yelled at me last night & said that he often doesn’t go to the dentist even when he has tooth pain & that he is missing 4 teeth. We have no insurance as be says we can’t afford it. We don’t qualify for government assistance as he makes about 100000 a year he said.
I hate him but I have nowhere to go. My family is abusive & they won’t help me at all.

2024.04.18 04:49 Electronic_Might_287 Embezzling problem

What should I do? For background, my husband has a restaurant with 2 more business partners (a cousin and aunt). They all have equal parts of the business… or so we thought. A couple of years ago, we noticed my husbands checks getting smaller, 50% smaller, while they seemed to get more luxurious items, which would’ve been impossible with the checks each were getting. We didn’t think too much since the cousins husband was also working for the restaurant as an employee. Note: the aunt, which is the cousins mom doesn’t work and lets the daughter manage her share. One day my husband stumbled upon the checkbook and noticed several checks made to the cousin and the husband separately. He was also withdrawing money from it. We asked and they said it was to pay staff. To clarify, my husband has been working the kitchen and they do front of the house and financials. They had never showed my husband any financial records other than the business account. Fast forward Covid hit and we were able to stay afloat pretty good. Being a popular restaurant in town, we were still busy on takeout and curbside. Checks were coming in as if Covid hadn’t hit just enough to cover bills. In 2021, the husband came in and told my husband that they were buying a new home, Not just any home but a 900k home. There is no possible way they can afford it. They claimed his parents had given them that money. We come to find out their first house, which was 200k in debt back in 2018 was fully paid for. And they had 280k in down payment for the new house. We know for a fact the parents could not give them that much since their story changed so many times. My husband got suspicious and demanded the credit card login. We found out they were paying their own bills, car repairs, new house repairs and so much more with the company credit card. Not to mention they also took trips using this credit card. Without telling my husband I looked into more stuff and found out so much more. The parents had not paid for the house, they have been stealing over 40k cash a month and delete the transactions from the register. They still don’t want to give my husband the log ins and have not had luck. They also set up cameras in the restaurant and I have caught the husband putting cash in his wallet daily. I think they caught on and decided to eliminate the playback option. Right now my husband is struggling hard and they are living the life with brand new 80k cars and so many activities. I want to contact the IRS to kinda let them know but I want to make sure it’s the right move. My husband doesn’t know how much I know. I found out discretely because it’s sensitive info. Reddit, what should I do?

2024.04.04 17:18 Leather_Focus_6535 The currently 56 offenders executed by Ohio and their crimes (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk)

Here is my list for Ohio's executions that I made for my personal death penalty project. As a fair warning, many of the listed crimes are extremely depraved by nature, and I don't shy away from any of that in my entries. I'll probably do Delaware tomorrow.
The executed 56:
  1. Wilford Berry Jr. (1990-1996, lethal injection): Berry and his accomplice shot dead their employer, 52 year old Charles Mitroff, while robbing a bakery they worked at.
  2. Jay Scott (~1961-2001, lethal injection): Scott robbed a Deli at gunpoint, and fatally shot the owner, 74 year old Vinnie Price. He also took part in the robbery that killed a security guard, 66 year old Alexander Jones. While on death row, Scott had stabbed another inmate, held two guards hostage with two other death row inmates William Zuern and John Byrd, and set his cell on fire. His childhood was troubled, and had theft convictions dating back to when he was 9 years old.
  3. John Byrd (1983-2002, lethal injection): Byrd and his partner robbed a convenience store, and kidnapped the night clerk, 40 year old Monte Tewksbury. Tewksbury was robbed of his wedding ring, wallet, and watch. The pair stabbed him and left Tewksbury for dead as they ran off with the entire register. While mortally wounded, Tewksbury called his wife. She and a customer tended to him until an ambulance arrived, and he succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. As mentioned under Jay Scott's section, Byrd assisted him and another death row inmate, William Zuern, in abducting two guards to force demands from the prison staff.
  4. Alton Coleman (~1960s-2002, lethal injection): Coleman and his girlfriend went on a nationwide crime spree that involved the abduction murders of at least 8 mostly females and a few males. His verified and speculated victims include 79 year old Eugene Scott, 44 year old Marlene Walters, 30 year old Virginia Temple, 25 year old Donna Williams, 15 year old Tonnie Storey, 9 year old Vernita Wheat, Virginia's 9 year old daughter Rochelle, and 7 year old Tamika Turks. Walters' 45 year old husband and Turks' 9 year old aunt survived the attacks that killed their wife and niece respectively. Most of the killings were done through strangulations and beatings with blunt objects. The murders were very diverse, and they ranged from home invasion robberies, carjackings, abductions through force, and enticements. Before embarking on his killing spree, Coleman had several burglary, theft, and sexual misconduct convictions. Also sentenced to death in the states of Illinois and Indiana.
  5. Robert Buell (1981-2002, lethal injection): Buell abducted, raped, and strangled at least three girls, 12 year old Tina Harmon, 11 year old Krista Harrison, and 10 year old Deborah Smith to death. All three of them were lured or pulled into his van by force while walking alone on the sidewalk. Only convicted of Harrison's murder and satisfactorily credited with Smith's death in his lifetime, Buell was posthumously linked to Harmon's murder by a DNA test in 2010. In addition to his 3 verified murders, Buell had sexually assaulted at least two women.
  6. Richard Fox (~1983(?)-2003, lethal injection): Fox lured 18 year old Leslie Keckler with the promise of a job interview for his restaurant. He made an attempt to rape Keckler, but strangled and stabbed her 6 times when she fought back. Fox had several complaints of sexual harassment from his staff, a conviction of assaulting another women in circumstances similar to Keckler's murder, and is suspected in the suspicious "suicide" of his estranged wife Kim.
  7. David Brewer (1985-2003, lethal injection): Brewer lured Sherry Byrne, the 21 year old wife of a college friend, into a motel room with the promise of selling her stero speakers. He raped Byrne, stabbed her 15 times, and hung her body with a necktie.
  8. Ernest Martin (1983-2003, lethal injection): While robbing a drug store with his girlfriend, Martin shot and killed the owner, 70 year old Robert Robinson, with a gun he pickpocketed from a security guard a month earlier.
  9. Lewis Williams Jr. (1983-2004, lethal injection): Williams broke into the home of 76 year old Leoma Chmielewski, shot her dead, and stomped on her body. He than ransacked it for anything of value, but none of the reports on hand to me mentioned any items that were stolen.
  10. John Roe (1984-2004, lethal injection): Roe abducted 21 year old Donette Crawford in the parking lot of a convenience store, shot her in the back of the head, and drove off with her car and purse.
  11. William Wickline (~1971-2004, lethal injection): Wickline strangled and dismembered a married couple, 28 year old Christopher and 25 year old Peggy Lerch, in a dispute over a drug debt. He also was confirmed to have strangled and decapitated a rival drug dealer, 34 year old Charles Marsh, in West Virginia, but was unable to be charged for it due to his death sentence in Ohio. Wickline has been suspected in several other murders, and had previous convictions for burglary, drug dealing, and pimping.
  12. William Zuern Jr. (1984-2004, lethal injection): Zuern shot and killed 24 year old Gregory Earls for testifying against his father that was convicted of drug dealing. As he was awaiting trial for Earls' murder, Zuern stabbed Phillip Pence, a 26 year old corrections officer, to death while he was searching his cell for weapons. While on death row, Zuern assisted the above mentioned Jay Scott and John Byrd in kidnapping two guards to extort concessions from the prison staff.
  13. Stephen Vrabel (1989-2004, lethal inection): Vrabel fatally shot his 29 year old girlfriend Susan Clemente and their 3 year old daughter Lisa, and stuffed their bodies in a refrigerator for a month. He turned himself and the remains over to the police after confiding his crimes to a priest.
  14. Scott Mink (2000-2004, lethal injection): Enraged that his parents, 79 year old William and 72 year old Sheila, stole his car keys to prevent him from seeking out drugs, Mink beat, stabbed, and strangled them with a claw hammer, kitchen knives, and an electrical cord. He then stole their credit cards and used them to buy cocaine.
  15. Adremy Dennis (1994-2004, lethal injection): Dennis and his accomplice robbed 29 year old Kurt Kyle of $15 outside a bar and shot him to death.
  16. William Smith (1987-2005, lethal injection): Smith and 47 year old Mary Bradford were out dancing at a bar together, and decided to spend the night at her home. Although they initially engaged in consensual sex, Smith raped and stabbed Bradford 10 times when he discovered his cocaine missing. He left Bradford to die of her injuries on her bed, and stole 2 televisions and a stereo set from the home.
  17. Herman Ashworth (1996-2005, lethal injection): Ashworth was drinking at a bar with 40 year old Daniel Baker, and the pair walked out together into alley. After Baker allegedly made sexual advances, Ashworth beat him with a board. Baker was kicked to death in the attack, and over $40 was stolen from his wallet.
  18. William Williams Jr. (~1976-2005, lethal injection): With the help of his underaged girlfriend, her brother, and two other teenagers, Williams abducted 4 rival drug dealers, 23 year old William Dent, 23 year old Theodore Wynn, 21 year old Alfonda Madison, and 20 year old Eric Howard. The victims were bound, strangled, and shot. After Williams was arrested, he and 3 other men broke out of jail and tried storming the juvenile jail that his accomplices were held at in an attempt to kill them for testifying against him. Although Williams and his accomplices took hostages, they surrendered without issue. Williams also had past convictions of bank robbery, assault, breaking and entering, and cocaine trafficking.
  19. John Hicks (1985-2005, lethal injection): In search of money for cocaine, Hicks robbed his mother in law, 56 year old Maxine Armstrong, of $300 and her credit cards, and strangled her to death with his bare hands and clotheslines. To eliminate any witnesses, he smothered his stepdaughter, 5 year old Brandy Green, with a pillow, duct tape, and his hands, and dismembered her body.
  20. Glenn Benner II (~1985-2006, lethal injection): Over the course of several months in late 1985 and mid 1986, Benner kidnapped two women, 26 year old Cynthia Sedgwick and 21 year old Trina Bowser, that he was acquainted with. Sedgwick and Bowser were both raped and strangled to death with their own clothes. Benner was also responsible for the non fatal abductions and sexual assaults of at least 3 other women. Two were attacked while jogging and biking, and the third was victimized in her own home.
  21. Joseph Clark (~1960-2006, lethal injection): Clark shot dead two clerks, 23 year old David Manning and 21 year old Donald Harris, in the robberies of a convenience store and a gas station. His execution was controversial, as it took the executioners 90 minutes to find his veins. Clark also had an extensive criminal record that dated back to when he was 14 years old, and his previous arrests include burglary, theft, autotheft, and assisting a sexual assault.
  22. Rocky Barton (~1991-2006, lethal injection): Barton shot and killed his fourth wife, 44 year old Kimbirli, in front of his daughter and uncle during an argument and turned the gun on himself. He survived with facial disfigurements. Barton had a long history of extreme domestic abuse. In one incident, Barton beat one of his previous wives with the butt of his shotgun, stabbed her, and cut her throat. The former wife survived and Barton served 8 years of incarceration for attempted murder for the attack.
  23. Darrell Ferguson (2001-2006, lethal injection): Ferguson stabbed his step-uncle, 61 year old Thomas King, to death and stole two television sets and a radio that were sold to buy cocaine. The next day, Ferguson broke into the home of a couple, 69 year old Mae and 68 year old Arile Fugate, that were his former neighbors, and stabbed and stomped on them to death.
  24. Jeffrey Lundgren (1989-2006, lethal injection): Lundgren controlled a splinter group of what is now the Community of Christ church. He orchestrated the abductions of the Avery family (consisting of parents, 49 year old Denis and 46 year old Cheryl, and 3 children, 15 year old Trina, 13 year old Rebecca, and 7 year old Karen), his followers that fell out of Lundgren's favor to due to disputes over finances. The Averys were all lured into a barn, tied up, gagged, and shot in the head as part of a ritualistic sacrifice. Lundgren and his followers also made plans to seize the Kirtland temple from their parent church, but backed out after they embezzled $40,000 for the scheme.
  25. James Filiaggi (1993-2007, lethal injection): Filiaggi and his ex wife, 27 year old Lisa Huff, divorced after only 9 months of marriage. He targeted her and her new fiance in a prolonged harassment campaign, which included threats over the telephone and acts of vandalism. The harassment escalated when he assaulted Huff's fiance while he was visiting their daughters. Two days later, Filiaggi chased down Huff from her home to a neighbor's house and shot her dead. He also made an attempt on her stepfather's life as well, but he was fended off with pepper spray.
  26. Christopher Newton (2001-2007, lethal injection): Newton was originally incarcerated for burglarizing his father's home. In prison, Newton strangled and asphyxiated his cellmate, 27 year old Jason Brewer, with a sheet and a cloth gag in a fight over a chess game they were playing. Allegedly, Newton licked Brewer's blood off his hands, a detail that he bragged to investigators about. Brewer was also serving time for burglary when he was murdered. Due to Newton's obesity, the executioners had a difficult time finding the veins to administer the fatal drugs to, and thus his execution took over 2 hours to complete.
  27. Richard Cooey II (1986-2007, lethal injection): Cooey's teenage friend was throwing concrete off a bridge, and one piece struck a car that two college students, 21 year old Wendy Offredo and 20 year old Dawn McCreery, were riding in. Cooey, the teenage friend, and another friend drove by Offredo and McCreery's wrecked car, and enticed the two women into their vehicle with the promise of helping them. Cooey held the pair at knifepoint and tied them both up. He and his teenage accomplice raped, stabbed, and beat Offredo and McCreery with a billy club over the course of a 3 hour long assault, while his third friend backed out. The attack ended when Cooey and his accomplice strangled Offredo and McCreery to death with their shoelaces.
  28. Gregory Bryant-Bey (1992-2008, lethal injection): Bryant-Bey stabbed 48 year old Dale Pinkelman in the chest while robbing his Collectibles store, and murdered 61 year old Peter Mihas while robbing his restaurant in a similar fashion. He stripped both Pinkelman and Mihas of their pants and socks, and stole Pinkelman's car.
  29. Daniel Wilson (1991-2008, lethal injection): Wilson abducted a friend, 24 year old Carol Lutz, while they were drinking at a bar together. According to prosecutors, the kidnapping was motivated by Wilson's anger at Lutz rejecting his advances. He locked her in the trunk of his car, and set it on fire with Lutz trapped inside it.
  30. John Fautenberry (1984-2009, lethal injection): Across the states of Alaska, New Jersey, Ohio, and possibly Oregon, Fautenberry murdered 4 men, 47 year old Don Nuttley, 45 year old Joseph Daron, Jr., 39 year old Jeff Diffee, and 27 year old Gary Farmer, and one woman, 32 year old Christine Guthrie. The victims were all individuals that Fautenberry picked up as he was working as a truck driver. Most of his killings were done through shootings, but one victim was stabbed 18 times. Fautenberry then robbed their bodies, usually taking money, but his theft of an ATM card proved to be his downfall when he used it after a victim was reported missing.
  31. Marvallous Keene (1992-2009, lethal injection): In a 3 day crime spree, Keene and his accomplices murdered 6 people between the ages of 16 to 38. Half of the victims, 38 year old Sarah Abraham, 34 year old Joseph Wilkerson, and 18 year old Danita Gullette, were shot dead in robberies. The remaining half, 19 year old Richmond Maddox, 18 year old Marvin Washington, and 16 year old Wendy Cottrill were shot and killed by Keene's gang out of fear of them being police informants.
  32. Jason Getsy (~1992-2009, lethal injection): Gesty and 2 other men were hired by a landscaping contractor to kill a business rival. They tracked down the rival in his home, and shot him and his mother, 66 year old Ann Serafino. Serafino died on the scene, while her son survived his injuries. Getsy also had a negligent homicide conviction when a 14 year old friend was killed playing Russian Roulette with him.
  33. Kenneth Biros (1991-2009, lethal injection): While partying at a bar with her uncle, 22 year old Tami Engstrom became heavily intoxicated, and Biros offered to give her a ride to help sober up. He took advantage of an inebriated Engstrom, and beat and strangled her to death. Biros then sexually mutilated and dismembered her body. Pieces of it were scattered all across Northeastern Ohio and Northwestern Pennsylvania.
  34. Vernon Smith (1993-2010, lethal injection): Smith and his accomplices held up a convenience store and forced the owner Sohail Darwish, a 28 year old Palestinian immigrant, to open the register. Despite Darwish complying with his demands, Smith shot him dead. He and his accomplices stole $400 in cash and $50 in food stamps.
  35. Mark Brown (1994-2010, lethal injection): Brown and a partner walked into a store owned by a family of Arab immigrants to buy cigarettes. They shot the two shopkeepers present, 32 year old Hayder Al Tuyrk and 30 year old Isam Salman, dead.

Foster had previously babysat some of Reynolds' younger siblings.
  37. Darryl Durr (~1988-2010, lethal injection): Durr kidnapped 16 year old Angel Vincent from her home while her parents were away. Vincent was tied up, raped and strangled to death with a dog chain. Durr was a serial sex offender, and had two other rape convictions that enabled the investigators to link him to Vincent's murder.
  38. Michael Beuke (~1983-2010, lethal injection): Beuke abducted and robbed 3 men that picked him hitchhiking. He shot all 3 of his victims, but only 27 year old Robert Craig was immediately killed. Another victim, 28 year old Gregory Wahoff, was crippled for life, and died in 2006 from complications relating to his injuries. Allegedly, Beuke committed the robberies to pay for a lawyer for a then upcoming trial against drug trafficking charges.

Her children, 13 year old Rodriczus Mack, 12 year old Denitra Satterwhite, 10 year old Deondra Freeman, and 8 year old Mykkila Mason, her niece, 11 year old Markeca Mason, and Rodriczus' friend, 11 year old Richard Gaines, were all sleeping in their beds. To eliminate witnesses, Garner used the electronic outlets to set the house on fire. Almost all the children, save for Rodriczus, were burned to death.
  40. Roderick Davie (1991-2010, lethal injection): Davie stormed a veterinary company that he was fired from months earlier. He fired on 3 of this coworkers, and killed one, 38 year old John Coleman, and wounded another. Spisak also fired on a woman for making derisive comments about the Nazi party, but she escaped unharmed.

Carter had a violent criminal history, which included several assault charges.
  45. Daniel Bedford (1984-2011, lethal injection): Furious at her rejections of rekindling their former relationship, Bedford fatally shot his ex girlfriend, 25 year old Gwen Toepfert, and her boyfriend, 27 year old John Smith, in their apartment.
  46. Reginald Brooks Sr. (1982-2011, lethal injection): To get back at his estranged wife for filing for divorce, Brooks shot their 3 sons, 17 year old Reginald Jr., 15 year old Vaughn, and 11 year old Niarchos as they were sleeping in their beds. Family accounts mentioned that Brooks was often violent with his sons and ex wife. In one reported incident just two weeks before the murders, Brooks got into an altercation with two of his sons over homework, and he threatened their lives after they subdued him.
  47. Mark Wiles (~1983-2011, lethal injection): Wiles worked as a part time farm hand for couple Charles and Carol Klimas. He was fired after they suspected him of stealing $200. A year after he was let go, Wiles broke into their farm to rob it, and found himself confronted by Mark, the Kilmas' 15 year old son. He stabbed the boy 24 times, stole $240 from the home, and left the body for his parents to find. Wiles served a 4 to 24 year sentence for an unrelated burglary after he was fired by the Kilmas, but was released shortly before he murdered Mark.
  48. Donald Palmer (1989-2012, lethal injection): Palmer had set his sights on robbing 43 year old Charles Sponhaltz, a former boyfriend of his ex wife. As he and his accomplice were staking out Sponhaltz's house, his accomplice ran into Sponhaltz's car as he was pulling in. The three got into an argument and shot him dead. Palmer also fatally shot a random driver, 41 year old Steven Vargo, when he pulled over to see what the commotion was all about.
  49. Brett Hartman (1997-2012, lethal injection): Hartman had a sexual relationship with 46 year old Winda Snipes. When she refused intercourse at her apartment, he bound Snipes to her own bed, stabbed her 138 times with a butcher knife, and cut her hands off.
  50. Frederick Treesh (1994-2013, lethal injection): Treesh and his accomplices carried out a heist on an Ohio adult bookstore. As they were binding the customers and employees, the security guard, 58 year old Henry Dupree resisted and was shot dead by them. A second victim, the cashier, was also hit by gunfire, but he managed to live through his wounds. Days earlier, they held up a Michigan video store owned by 39 year old Ghassan Danno and his brother, a pair of Iraqi immigrants. The group shot both of the brothers during the robbery. Danno was killed and his brother survived his injuries. Treesh's crime spree also included several bank robberies and sexual assaults.
  51. Steven Smith (1998-2013, lethal injection): In his apartment, Smith raped Autumn Carter, his girlfriend's 6 month old daughter, and suffocated her with a pillow.
  52. Harry Mitts Jr. (1994-2013, lethal injection): Mitts was enraged that his black neighbor, 28 year old John Bryant, was seeing a white woman, and shot him to death in front of his girlfriend when they returned home from grocery shopping. He also shot and killed a police officer, 40 year old Dennis Glivar, that responded to the scene. Glivar's colleagues wounded and subdued Mitts in the following shootout.
  53. Dennis McGuire (1989-2014, lethal injection): McGuire kidnapped a pregnant woman, 22 year old Joy Stewart, as she was walking to visit the home of a friend's mother, and sodomized her. He strangled and cut Stewart's throat, and dumped her body in the woods where it was found by hikers. His execution was controversial, as witnesses recounted him gasping for air and that his death lasted for 25 minutes rather than the planned 8 minutes. McGuire had other convictions unrelated to Stewart's murder, but the details were kept vague in my sources.
  54. Ronald Phillips (1993-2017, lethal injection): Philips molested and physically assaulted Sheila Evans, his girlfriend's 3 year old daughter, on numerous occasions. The girl's mother assisted him in the abuse and even pinned her down to be raped in a few of the incidents. Evans was killed when her head was slammed against a wall.
  55. Gary Otte (1992-2017, lethal injection): In the span of a day, Otte broke into the apartments of 61 year old Robert Wasikowsk and 45 year old Sharon Kostura, and shot them dead. He stole a combined total of $470 dollars, Kostura's car keys, and her checkbook.
  56. Robert Van Hook (~1975-2018, lethal injection): Van Hook went to a bar popular among Cincinnati's gay residents, and seduced 25 year old David Self. He convinced Self to take him back to his apartment on the pretenses of hooking up. When they were inside, Van Hook strangled Self, sliced open his body with a kitchen knife, stuffed the weapon and a cigarette butt inside it, and took off with Self's jewelry. Van Hook had been robbing and assaulting homosexual men since he was 15, which undermined his gay panic defense for Self's murder.

2024.03.30 06:44 Expensive_Berry1727 AITAH for calling the autistic host rude?

(Sorry in advance for any spelling/grammatical errors, I’m dyslexic and I’m typing this out at 1am) A little background on the situation: this week I had a friend visiting me from home, we decided to go out on her last night here and so to start the night I took her to a local pup that I have been to a few times. They have a nice back patio bar that I enjoy. As soon as we get there we order our drinks, I close my tab because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to order another drink before our next destination. Once I finish my first drink I did decide to order another but when I went to grab my card from my wallet it wasn’t there. I immediately look in my pockets, every space it could be in my wallet, around the table we were sitting at, where we had ordered our drinks at the bar, and I had even asked the bartender if I had left it in the checkbook. It was nowhere to be found so I locked my card in my bank app and the bartender told me to call in the morning to check and see if they found it when they clean around the bar after they close that night. I decided that there was nothing I could do about it in that moment and I wanted to enjoy the last night I had with my friend so we agreed to continue on and I would zell her for my drinks that night.
Now this is the part where I feel like the asshole, in the morning I called the pub and the man that had answered the phone was extremely rude to me. When I was saying that I had lost my card the night before he had cut me off to say that I needed to come in and ask the bartender on the patio if they had my card, when I had asked him if it was possible if he could check to see if my card was there before I made the trip down he had laughed at me and said that he was way too busy to do that. His tone during this exchange was atrocious and very rude, it made me feel like asking this of him was an insane request and I was crazy for even considering it even though I have worked as a host and did this for people who have lost their cards at our restaurant all the time. This had made me upset and I will say I was a little pissed off about how I had been treated. After this I had no other choice but to make the trip down to the pub. I got there not even 30 minutes after making the phone call and went to the back patio entrance, not walking through the indoor restaurant part of the building yet. The patio was reasonably busy, there was plenty of room at the bar but there were only a few tables open. The bartender out there told me that they kept all cards they found inside the restaurant. Now walking in I had expected the inside of the restaurant to be packed because of the way the host on the phone had reacted, but as I go in the restaurant was practically dead. There were maybe 5-6 tables sat and the bar was completely empty, I could see the host stand from where I stood at the bar after the bartender went to look in the office for my card and the host was sitting there on his cellphone. I know it was the same man that had answered my phone call because I heard him speak to one of the servers and I could recognize his voice. At this point I am even more pissed off because this man had been so rude to me on the phone saying he was too busy to check to see if they had my card but he was actually just on his cellphone the entire time. To make matters worse, they did not in fact have my card so not only did I make the trip for nothing when it could have been avoided, my card was most likely stolen. This entire process has made me mad enough to leave a review about it, (I never ever leave reviews, this is the first time I have left a review in my life) this is what I said: “I called to ask if they had my debit card I had lost the night before and I cannot even describe how rude the man on the phone was as soon as he answered, when I asked if it was possible to check if they had my card so I don't make the trip for nothing he laughed at me and said he was way too busy to take probably not even 5 minutes to check if they have my card and treated me like it was an insane thing to ask. After this experience I went into the restaurant and it was pretty much dead, there were maybe 6 tables sat and the host that had answered the phone was on his cellphone. Also, they did not have my card so I did in fact make the trip for nothing and my card was stolen there because this was the first place we went and I had realized my card was missing after ordering my first drink, the bartender had told me to call in the morning after we could not find my card. This is the worst customer service I have ever received, I’ve worked in a restaurant and I would never treat a customer like this.”
Of course I do believe I could have been nicer in my review but I was pissed off when I wrote it. The owner of the restaurant responded to my review within an hour of posting it, this is what they said: “[my name], I would like to inform you that the gentleman at the host who answered the phone is not intentionally trying to be rude, he is an autistic. While we understand he may come off strong sometimes, he is a great worker. We are very sorry to hear that you misplaced your credit card. If and when cards are left or found we do keep them in the drawer incase the owners return. If your card was not here we suggest you call your credit card company and have it canceled. Best of luck.” (Idk if I’m reading too much into it but this response feels low key condescending almost??)
This is what makes me feel like the asshole, I know there was no way of telling that the man was autistic but I still can’t help but to feel like a bad person. AITAH??

2024.03.22 23:25 Yvng-Soto My mother passed away and my aunt (POA) took wallet and checkbook

Washington resident.
So I’m writing this on behalf of my mother, because she has no idea if anything can be done or where to start.
My grandmother recently passed away from cancer, and while she was alive her sister had power of attorney. From my understanding, POA ends after death?
So here is the scenario. Over the last several months my mother has noticed certain things missing from my grandmother’s retirement home. She would ask her aunt about it, bring it up to the staff, and was never able to figure out where things were going. The last couple weeks grandma wasn’t even able to get out of bed. But every time we visited her the closest was open, things were moved and or missing. Eventually grandmas wallet and checkbook were gone. When my mom asked her aunt (POA) she said she had it to keep it safe.
Now that grandma has passed away, the aunt has asked the retirement staff that anyone other than herself needs her permission to enter grandmas apartment. My mom spoke with another family member and apparently the day after grandma died the aunt went and collected all the electronics and jewelry (tv, cell phone, iPad, rings, earrings etc). Now my aunt has asked my mom to clean out the rest of grandmas apartment (mostly furniture and clothes), which we don’t have a problem doing.
My mom feels like her aunt has been stealing stuff while she was alive and now that she has passed she is taking all of her money. It really sucks to have these thoughts after a loved one passed away, but it just feels like there is some abuse of power going on. Grandma has 2 daughters, and aunt has intentionally kept them out of the loop with everything except cleaning up apartment.
I asked my mom if grandma had a will and she said she doesn’t even know. My mom seems to have given up and is content with memories of being there by grandmas side until she passed. Not wanting to “profit off her death” like she thinks the aunt only cares about.
I think it’s bullshit and it infuriates me. And I have encouraged her to stick up for herself and for her mom. What can we do, if anything? How can we see if there was a will? My mom never brought it up with grandma because she didn’t feel right discussing it at her bedside while she was dying. She trusted her aunt and I think the aunt took advantage of that and my GMA.

2024.03.21 15:21 Typical_Asparagus_22 Oakley Rover Laptop Backpack

Oakley Rover Laptop Backpack
Anyone have experience with the Oakley Rover backpack? Looking to upgrade from a lowepro 18L daypack I’ve had for 10yrs.
I own a construction business so I carry a mix of items. I wear glasses, so I carry rx sunglasses in a hard case and a hard case for my regular glasses, laptop/iPad, a larger binder w/ multiple file folders, wallet, checkbook, extra socks, etc…
Open to other recommendations, but currently the Oakley Rover is top choice, only dislike as of now is the larger obnoxious logo.

2024.03.05 19:00 BlockSome3022 Do we have a case? Need advice

It’s a bit ironic because my dad was a lawyer for years but now that he’s sedated in the ICU I can’t ask for any legal advice from him.
This past week my dad was pulled over for reckless driving and charged with a DUI. He was breathalyzed twice and blew a 0.0 both times. The officers handcuffed him, booked him, insisted on searching his car, and all they found was his blood pressure medication and a medicine called Coricidin, which is like a flu medication for people with high blood pressure. My dad called my brother from jail and my brother said he immediately knew something was wrong. When he picked him up my dad looked weak, was moving slowly, having trouble speaking, very clearly sick. They didn’t even release his medications with him; my mom had to go back and beg for them later that evening. We also cannot find his wallet or checkbook anywhere and I’m trying not to be too suspicious that they’re holding onto them for some reason.
The next day my dad had shown no improvement but my mom forced him to go to the hospital. Thank god she did because they almost immediately found his kidneys failing, a staph infection, pneumonia, low platelet count. He’s currently sedated, on kidney dialysis. We’re waiting on some labs to come back. Genuinely a medical mystery and if any of you are praying people I ask for your prayers.
But my main question is: can we get the DUI charge dropped? And, do we have any legal recourse against this police department that clearly was negligent in their treatment of a man who needed medical attention, not an arrest?
Thank you to anyone who can provide any advice or insight.

2024.02.26 21:09 ladder2thesun01 Represtation without my consent or knowledge

1995 - I was 23 had a checking account and had a wallet/checkbook combo. Went to a club and had my pocket picked. Next day reported, in person, to the bank that my wallet was stolen along with my id and also filed a police report.
2000 - Living in a different city approximately an hour away from where I originally lived. Driving home after a late 2nd shift admittedly was going a little fast, was pulled over and promptly arrested and was told that I had a warrant but was not told what exactly I was being arrested for. Was in Jail for approximately 48 hours before my girlfriend posted my bond, my vehicle was also impounded and I missed 2 days of work.
Come to find out later that I was arrested for theft by check $500 to $1500. Apparently whomever stole my wallet had used my ID and checks to purchase over $500 worth of groceries from a supermarket. The supermarket came after me when the check bounced.
I eagerly awaited the trial date only to find out later that an attorney I had never met or hired had represented me in court and had somehow gotten the case dismissed.
2024 - I just found out that I have three things on my criminal record, two minor traffic violations and this theft charge. I'm assuming that the supermarket or the bank realized that I wasn't responsible for this as I did everything I was supposed to do and they made it go away. I mean, I had to pay a bond, pay to get my car out of impound, missed two days of work in the worst jail in my state and this is still on my record. My question is was any of this legal? Is there anything I can do about any of this even this many years later?

2024.01.30 15:38 Timely-Landscape-383 Elderly mom wants to go home to be neglected, likely to death, by abusive husband. Let her?

My mostly bedbound mom wants to leave her skilled nursing facility and go home, where she will be severely neglected by her abusive husband as her full time caregiver. I’m pretty sure if she does, she’ll die of an infection she’ll get from neglect within 4 months.
She’s fairly mentally competent (mild memory problems), but so abused and dissociated that she chooses her covert narc abuser over her basic health, again and again.
Is it better to keep her in skilled nursing, against her wishes, to keep her alive and where she might improve? I think I can show enough evidence that home isn’t safe that the current facility actually can’t release her home due to liability. Or there’s APS.
My partner says: what’s she going to do in skilled nursing all by herself? Is that any quality of life? She’s not going to wake up and realize his lifetime of abuse is not ok and be glad she’s independent. Let her do what she “wants,” which is to not be alone. Stop enabling them by trying to fix their bad decisions. They just fight you and drain your energy and it’s making you sick.
I get a jolt of distrust of my partner when she says that. And I can’t tell whether I should trust that distrust.
Last month I had to fight both parents to get mom to go the ER, where they found blood clots and infected rashes and bed sores. She was in so much pain she was begging to end her life. ER eventually sent her to skilled nursing. I wish I’d called APS back then.
He was keeping her in bed a room with blacked out windows and no clock or calendar, no sunlight, only changing her diaper once a day. Her doctors didn’t know she couldn’t walk, or that she was covered in rashes and sores. He wasn’t bringing her food, water, or medicine regularly. She didn’t have access to her mobility equipment, her meds, wallet, ID, checkbook, keys, computer, or a light switch. She hadn’t been bathed with water in months. He’d installed an illegal electronic deadbolt on their apartment door, so whenever he left, no one, including emergency personnel could get in.
He’s been abusive and controlling for decades. Yells, belittles, gaslights, breaks things, doesn’t allow her to have friends, reads her phone and email, but his everything is password protected. Creates chaos and sabotages her to keep her dependent. She’s trained to be utterly passive. She protects and enables him. He looks like a saint to the outside world.

2024.01.26 23:34 mybrowndog Long Wallet for Goldbacks, Cash, and Credit Cards.

Long Wallet for Goldbacks, Cash, and Credit Cards.
Been searching for a workable/usable wallet that will accommodate, Goldbacks! (5 denominations) ...AND! Cash (US Bills)..... AND! Credit Cards. Long wallets and Checkbooks come close but don't really fill the need for a workable, usable every day wallet.
The closest thing I've found to what I would like is this, pictured below. To bad it doesn't have another flap with sleave slots for the Goldbacks in front of the Cash flap. They say best way to promote Goldbacks is to use them. If it's inconvenient, they won't be used. Not everyone accepts or aware of Goldbacks and it's inconvenient to carry separate wallets to accommodate them. Goldbacks guys, are you listening?

2024.01.24 19:38 zyoka14 Please recommend a sturdy crossbody bag.

I am thinking of returning my new Tory Burch one as the material is just way too fragile and I think the corners will be ruined fast. I need a sturdy one. Also, what do you fit into a crossbody bag? :) I just realized I can’t fit my wallet into it! So I had to take my ID, credit cards, cash, insurance cards for 5 people, registration, insurance out of the wallet. Can’t carry my checkbook in the bag either. I am so used to have it all in my wallet but the purse is too small to fit it! Do you just carry car keys, phone, credit cards in crossbody bags??
