We started with a visit to Anastasia State Park, which is one of the most popular parks in the area. It boasts over 1,600 acres of land, making it an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. We spent the day bird watching, star gazing, kayaking, and exploring the miles of trails. We even spotted a few gopher tortoises!
The next day, we visited Fort Matanzas National Monument. This park is situated on a small island and offers a unique opportunity to explore the historic fort and view local wildlife. We were able to take a boat tour and learn about the history of the fort, as well as view a variety of wildlife including ospreys, bald eagles, and dolphins. It was a wonderful experience that we won’t forget.
Enjoy the Nightlife
As the sun set, we enjoyed the vibrant nightlife of the charming city and indulged in the lively atmosphere. Whether we were bar hopping along the lively downtown district or taking romantic strolls along the Intracoastal Waterway, Saint Augustine offered plenty of evening entertainment.
We decided to start our night off at The Milltop Tavern, a staple in Saint Augustine. With live music and a lively atmosphere, The Milltop Tavern was the perfect place to get the night started.
After a few drinks, we took a short walk to the historic district where we explored the quaint cobblestone streets and the local shops.
The night ended with a romantic dinner cruise along the Matanzas River. Relaxing under the starlit sky, we watched the lights of the city twinkle against the water as we enjoyed a delicious dinner and live music.

2024.03.28 03:18 I_Have_Many_Names Surprisingly … Crocs!

8.5 4E - I find a size 9 Croc is extremely comfortable. It’s my go-to beach going shoe as well as something to slip on as I exit my garage quickly. They’re cheap as hell, available in funky colors, and sure they’re dorky - but I’ll be damned if I don’t have all the room in the world in the toe box, and marshmallowy support where I need it. They do not offer widths, so I never would’ve thought to try if not for a visit with my non-duck-footed family to a Croc outlet.

2024.03.21 17:37 ChipRepresentative67 thoughts on California Zephyr from a first time amtrak superliner rider

CA zephyr from california to chicago in bedroom.
Bedroom size: It was nice to be able to stand up. You can see out both sides of the train if you keep your door curtain open. the bottom bunk is substantially larger & less claustrophobic than the top bunk, but the top bunk has a better mattress. top bunk is definitely more bouncy, esp during high speed regions, ie. during the nebraska overnight where you say a prayer that you don't go flying. I didn't realize just how much "turbulence" there is a a train, especially at higher speeds. some how you're able to sleep! it's actually very relaxing all the movement. Awkward to use the ladder but doable, but put your frequent, nighttime bathroom trip people in the bottom bunk.
bathroom: the bathroom is airplane-tiny and the shower is not worth it. Nice to have our own bathroom but defintely could have done without hearing people using the toilet nextdoor. Shower was used once and didn't drain very fast and when the train listed to one side, water poured out under the door onto the carpeted room. Luckily it wasn't a ton and we didn't have anything right there to get wet. Gasketing around that door is old. Maybe better to use the shower while you're at a longer stop, or use the bigger communal ones.
general bedroom interior: Train is old. Clean, but the interiors need serious updating. We had a debate about what amtrak should put money into if they got an influx of capital: food or interiors? Interiors obv would take trains out of service and cost more but jeez the ticket cost sure doesn't feel justified right now.
temp /air / smells : Temperature control in the bedroom is not real. On our mid-March trip, It was mid-70s most of the time and at times near 80 (my CO2 meter had temp sensor)- sweltering at night with the train's heat on, even with the room's "temperature control" set to coolest setting. my boomer parents would have loved how hot it was. The ventilation, though, is terrible. I brought a CO2 meter and it was consistently in the red. So stuffy, esp overnight with the doors closed. We didn't get the dreaded CA zephyr sewage smell in our room, thank god. Learn & use the courtesy flush, people. Flush with reckless abandon.

food: included in our ticket price, exorbitantly expensive for coach passengers (but it was always offered to ppl in coach if they wanted). breakfast - I can't eat eggs so that excluded everything except Continental Breakfast, which was great - oatmeal, little cup of fruit, chobani strawberry yogurt, raisins, and I ordered a side of bacon, which was obv microwaved. Standard & filling without feeling gross after. Lunch: angus burger is the way to go! blondie was super sweet, butter cake was not enjoyed by our tablemate. mac & cheese was gross. grilled cheese was reported as substandard. Dinner: salad appetizer was fine. flat iron steak was 4/10, chicken was the worst of the things we tried. you can order from the lunch menu for dinner & i ordered the burger again for dinner the second day - it was so good. Dining car experience - you sit with strangers. it's sweet. if you want privacy you can order dinner (only) to your room. But breakfast & lunch is with others and you make some small talk and get your food and it's sweet and everyone is generally in a good mood & on vacation and just read the room if someone seems not quite awake yet give them some grace. One of our servers in the dining car definitely did not want to be there and that was sad. When my hubs asked what she'd recommend from the dessert options she said "neither." LOL. Tip with abandon anyway, at every meal, and especially if someone brings food to your room. Some of those staff members are on the train for 6 days straight.

Stuff we brought that we'd bring again :
- power strip - we brought the anker power cube thingy which has a flat angled plug that worked fine & fit in the recessed outlet fine. (Can't report on other outlets on other trains.) there were two additional outlets by the bathroom sink but they weren't powered. !
- a tiny 0.5 L electric water boiler & silicon collapsible coffee drippers + travel mugs with lids. - we love our pour over coffee & hot tea. coffee service (the urn) in our train was taken down at 11am every day.
- a roll-up silicone mat to put on the little fold out table - kept everything we put there from sliding around
- slip on loafers/crocs for wearing around the train
- extra blanket & travel pillow that you could use as lumbar support
- a tiny (cup holder size) air filter - it doesn't scrub out CO2 but it filters the air for viruses (i hope lol) & gives a little bit of air movement
- Travel spray bottle with water + essential oil drops to use as air freshener in the bathroom - just enough scent but not overpowering in the poorly ventilated room.
- snacks & fruit. Bring fiber. you're not walking around anywhere. We had stuff to eat when we didn't want anything from the dining car or cafe.

didn't need:
- we brought sleeping bag liners but didn't use them because the provided sheets were just fine & soft. plus our train had the heat cranked UP.
don't bring:
- heavy perfume/cologne/heavily scented febreeze, etc.

last notes; would we do it again? from emeryville/richmond to denver or vice versa, potential yes, but not denver to chicago. from utah plateaus to snow on the mountains next to the colorado river it was magical and beautiful. & the moffett tunnel was cool because we had a great conductor who cracked jokes and gave us a little history during that time. I'm glad i finally got to see the mississippi river, but there's not much to see in nebraska/iowa.
We didn't have any issues with altitude but did get a little headachy as we climbed around denver.
if you like to sleep a lot this is a good trip for you.
if you're a severe introvert you can still do this trip, just bring extra food if you dont want to dine in the dining car.
if they updated the trains my recommendation would be much higher, but lack of ventilation was a big miss for me. would probably be fine with a roomette vs bedroom but extra room to stretch out *while also having a table* was nice, and standing up + bathroom.
