2024.05.27 22:51 g3thic [F4A][Literate] Jujutsu Kaisen!

Hello again! I’m not sure if you've read or seen my other posts about roleplays but this one will purely be about Jujutsu Kaisen!
INTRODUCTION
My name is Hina. To know more about me, I was born and raised in Japan and I have been an avid writer ever since I moved to the States when I was 11. My second language is English but I believe it’s been pretty good these days. I recently turned 22 years old and I'm female. Talking about age, I would be comfortable with you being 17+ and preferably at least 20. Roleplaying with minors isn’t a big thing for me, I apologize. I’m currently in the GMT+1 timezone for a temporary amount of time. Let’s see.. What other information can I give you? I would say I enjoy skating, basketball, watching tv shows and anime, and reading. My favorite anime is Nana and Death Note.
ROLEPLAY
For what i’m looking for, i’d have to say basically anything in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe. Perhaps something done in the Shibuya Arc, or even the Culling Games Arc where are our characters are participating. Or maybe something entirely different. I think it would be cool if our characters were strong on their own and everything was set up in the Culling Games Arc, them having to maybe ally or something. But we can also have it be basically them fighting together to make themselves stronger and then fight new enemies as well. I’m down for ideas!
I’m also down for a Modern AU roleplay with the original characters. Maybe an OC x CC or CC x CC in that case!
CHARACTERS
I tend to use character sheets to describe my character, these usually consist of names, background, and personality. More so on appearances, I prefer using animated or drawn references than real life people. I enjoy good enough references where I get the idea of how the character would look like.
The types of characters I write are either the lone wolf type that has some sad past which leads them to want to join someone for a redemption arc or the bubbly character who is the one that brings the mood up and is usually seen as trustworthy and of that kind.
I like all types of tropes, especially enemies to lovers or rivalry. I also really enjoy opposites attract as a whole from either opposite personality or something else they would be opposites in. Enemies to lovers takes my heart, though. I love seeing the characters go past the urge to ultimately hate each other and/or go past their usual way of disliking the others lineage or upcoming.
REQUIREMENT
I think this is my last paragraph on the roleplay. It’s the most important, at least. Requirements. All roleplay searches come with them. Or at least that’s what I heard! But don’t fret, there isn’t much.
I’ve seen this as one of the most used requirements, and I agree with it. As someone who’s first language wasn’t English, I understand that you may not be great at it. But please, I do require a partner that at least has proper use of grammar and punctuation. You don’t even have to use big words or anything, just at least know where to put your periods and the placement of your words.
My second requirement is for you to be LITERATE! Please. I’m a big writer, I tend to ramble on and tend to write more than what I thought I would. (like i’m doing right now) I write multiple paragraphs from the starter until the scene relaxes. I also understand that sometimes writing big blocks of words every response is tiring or boring so I don’t expect it all the time, at least after the starter has been made and in more important scenes. Dialogue also cuts my replies shorter.
Please please please be polite in OOC! We may just be role playing together but kindness goes all ways. If we do include OOC, I enjoy talking about many things. My day, movies, games, funny moments and stories, all of that!
I think that’s the end to this wonderful journey of an ad about my search. I hope you are still here, fellow writer! I would LOVE it if you reached out to me! This wasn’t all for nothing, right!
But don’t leave yet! I do have a passcode. I know this was a jumble of words and rambling but I still have to put one in. I heard that there’s a lot of people on here that don’t read things fully and miss out on rules or information! But.. Just because you read through this all, I’ll gladly give you options on the passcode! Also please put in an introduction of yourself! Don’t think “Oh maybe I shouldn’t bother this person with too much to read”! I like seeing big blocks.
PASSCODE:
What’s your dream country to travel to and why?
OR
Who’s your favorite TV show / Cartoon / Game / Anime character?
Feel free to pick both! Now, that’s all from me. Please don’t put your request as just “Wanna rp”!

2024.05.27 20:21 Tigra21 Hunter or Huntress Chapter 190: Eat, Drink and be Merry

Special _________________________________________________________________________________
“Come on man. Which one is better?” Balethon tried, leaning in over their table as Tom put down the second mug of cider. The ring of dragonettes standing around waiting for the verdict had been ever growing. Which didn’t really suit Tom, such pressure.
“They are both VERY sweet,” the lone human admitted, not really sure which to pick. Neither of them were really up his alley.
“It’s cider, of course it is sweet,” Fengi butted in, clearly also waiting for a verdict with bated breath.
“Well it doesn’t have to be. It tastes almost like Sommersby back home. Is all cider like this here?”
“Yes, which one tastes like Son- the one you remember, that’s good right?” Fengi tried again, Tom glancing around at the crowd.
“Both of them… I mean I guess this one is a bit sweeter,” he relented, gingerly holding up one mug, not sure who it belonged to.
“YES! Ours is best,” Balethon broke out in celebration, doing a little jump and a fist pump. The guys behind him started premature celebrations as well, though to a lesser degree.
“I would rather have this one though,” Tom carried on, lifting the other mug. “It’s a little more grown up. But to be honest, I would rather have a beer,” he declared, looking to the girls, taking particular note of Ray who was keeping herself in the background. He knew this was essentially her cider. And if he couldn’t taste much of a difference, who was he to deny her a bit of satisfaction.
“Well ain’t no problems there, this stuff is expensive. You want beer, you’ll have beer,” Fengi chuckled as the girls started to laugh and snicker at the boys celebrating early. “More for us.”
“Ours is sweeter, that means better. For a dragonette at least,” Balethon protested as he took back the mug Tom had been sipping from.
“We have sugar. I would rather have the better one than the sweeter one,” Fengi countered as the bickering started in both camps.
“It’s your own anyway, why don’t you just drink it while it’s still cold,” Nunuk then called out from her raised chair. “Or are you too busy with getting a leg up on those at your side?”
“No, ma’am,” Fengi replied as heads turned to look at the lady.
“You’re just jealous it’s better than the wine you got, mum,” Dakota added, rolling her eyes from her seat next to her mother.
“Maybe…” the old lady relented with a crooked smile as laughter and chuckles broke out, Fengi rolling her eyes too as she glared at the smiling old lady. “Oh come now can an old lady not have fun anymore?”
“Either way I heard beer. I think we should see about this here keg then,” Raulf declared loudly, overpowering the bickering and laughter. The farmer was standing with what had to be one of his own creations if the look of the barrel was to be believed.
“Now you’re talking, what’s in there?” Tom called out. He could do with a drink. Not getting sloshed, but a nice after work sorta beer. It wasn’t often they enjoyed proper drink around here. It was more of an occasional thing for them.
“Your bubble beer,” the farmer replied as with a smack the tap was hammered in.
“Oh saving the imports are we?”
“For now. Maybe we’ll have to compare those as well.”
“Can I try too?” came then the almost cautious or maybe just slightly overexcited voice of Edita, Tom turning to look at the inventor. As did Jacky, who was standing behind him. The artificer had a mug in one hand and a pair of wax sealed bottles under the other arm.
“Sure, I don’t see why not. Uhm what’s that?” Tom questioned, pointing at the pair of bottles.
“Oh uhm,” the inventor suddenly looked coy about something as she clearly struggled to find the words, Tom glancing to Jacky, who was observing carefully.
“The others told me you drink a lot. You said that all engineers drink a lot. I haven’t tried it before, and I know it is expensive. So I bought some with my spending money. It wouldn’t be nice to drink someone else’s stuff… right?”
Tom stared for a bit, not sure if that was adorable or sad. Probably a bit of both really. “Depends on the amount. But sure, you can try some.” He looked to Jacky once more, and she to him. “Well I think we can teach a real life lesson, don’t you?”
She nodded in reply, not seeming overly thrilled at the prospect. “Sure, I’ll go get some mugs.”
Edita livened up a bit seeing as her request had been positively received. “Oh excellent. I am sure it will be very informative.”
“Suure suure,” Tom confirmed jokingly. “First up, ale and beer aren't that expensive. We’ve got plenty. But that stuff does look expensive, what is that?” Tom questioned, wondering if having a sip of that stuff was worth the risk or not. Probably best not to though.
“Oh I don’t know. I just asked Vulzan for something nice.” She held them up and tried to read the label. “Hakeria… What’s that?”
“I have no idea,” Tom admitted, walking up to have a look as well. The label was very fine indeed, clearly hand painted with draconic runes in gold on a red background. It likely wasn’t actually gold, but it still looked very fancy.
There was some murmuring from the other people around, none of whom seemed to know what it was either.
“What did you say it was?” Nunuk then called out, apparently not having made it out either from upon her high chair.
“Oh Hakeria- uhm Ma’am,” Edita politely responded, doing a slight curtsey for the Lady. Nunuk for her part was leaning forward and squinting at the artificer and her mysterious cargo.
“How much did you give Vulzan?”
“Oh uhm. Some money.”
“How much?” the Lady repeated, with slightly more authority in her voice.
“I can’t really remember,” Edita admitted, sounding a touch shameful. “I did not believe it to be important information.”
“Well don’t let Paulin get her hands on it,” the old lady went with a chuckle, sitting back in her chair with a slightly pained expression. “But I wouldn’t mind a glass at some point.”
“Oh of course Lady Bizmati!” the artificer went, looking down at the bottle then back to Nunuk. “So you know what it is?”
“Please, Nunuk will do. And yes, it is made from needles, they grow on cactuses in the south to my knowledge. It is distilled of course. A fine liquor if I do say so myself.”
“Cactus fruit liquor? Well that’s certainly new. Maybe I will have to try a little sip too,” Tom pondered, rubbing his beard.
“Of course, you can have as much as you like,” Edita was quick to reply, holding out the bottle for him.
“Oh no no, not like that. I have to be careful of methanol in your alcohols. It’s fine for you, but poison for me. I already had a bad time once. But a small sip won’t hurt too bad.”
“Oh… I see. I heard alcohol makes you stupid but if you drink then that can’t be right. Then you wouldn’t drink.”
“It does, temporarily, can’t recommend drinking constantly though. That’s not good for you. Every once in a while, for the hell of it.”
“But… why would you want to be stupid?” Edita questioned, clearly at an utter loss.
“Cause then you forget about all your problems and can just have fun. It’s also good for getting past certain inhibitions!” Balethon added, throwing an arm around her, mug in the other hand. The guy was clearly feeling the effects of the sugary drink. Edita looked quite taken aback by the gesture, holding her bottles tight. “Trust us, it’s going to be fun!”
“Oh- okay.”
Edita seemed more unsure than mad at the guy for his exuberance and touchiness. ‘Boooi she has something to learn… maybe Saph and Fengi will teach her to slap him at some point,’ Tom chuckled to himself, simply watching what she might do.
Rather predictably she looked to Tom, with a pleading expression.
“He’s right you know… Actually, idea. I’ll get some music. Maybe Essy and Fengi will help teach you how to dance and stuff as well,” he went, thinking himself a genius for hopefully getting her to actually try and mingle with the crowd on her own. But alas.
“Oh I can help with the music, will you be using the laptop?”
“That and speakers but…uhm… no stay here. I will be back. Have fun. Maybe try a game of dice.” And with that masterful evasion out of the way, Tom headed off to try and procure some music. He didn’t really know what he was doing, but that was hardly new. Edita wanted to know what drinking was like. Might as well get her the whole package. Maybe he would get just a little sloshed too. Paulin was down below anyway. Surely they wouldn’t be heading down that early tomorrow.
By the time he made it back up the tables had been moved once more, closer to the far wall, making some open space while letting people still have a conversation together. Apuma and Nunuk hadn’t intervened, instead watching over the proceedings from their table. Their children however were mixing in with the rabble now along with both the trader crews and some of Baron’s men. Though Victoria remained seated with Nunuk for now. He did take note that she was definitely keeping an eye on him though, it was almost a touch unnerving.
But no matter. He got the music up and running in no time, and Essy was allowed to make the selection. Kokashi even got a say after he promised to go get his violin for those few tracks he had been practicing to play along to.
And so there was dancing. Tom had at first rather hoped to sit it out and just watch, but much like Unkai, the woman in his life didn’t give him much of a choice in the matter. Probably because he had been sitting next to Edita, who had sought refuge from the festivities next to him.
Just like the diminutive guard though, he certainly didn’t mind, especially since Jacky didn’t know much about dancing so it was just dumb fun. She ended up more or less just throwing him around, especially as she started getting competitive with Fengi, who was far far better at this. To his credit, Unkai was certainly also a lot better than Tom at keeping up, so Jacky simply compensated with brute strength, Tom hanging on for dear life.
There were even a few of the moves Tom remembered showing the kid back before the festival. Which did rather give him an idea. It was a very short lived one, as he surprised Jacky by trying something he remembered from way back in the day. She didn’t get what was going on and soon they were a laughing pile on the floor.
“What was that?” Jacky broke out from betwixt the chuckles as she tried to get back up.
“I wanted to do a pirouette toss thingy,” Tom protested, still quite certain that it had been a good idea, let down by the execution.
“I’m like 2 heads taller than you. How was that ever going to work?!”
“Look I’ve seen a… What’s the word for a small dragonette?”
“Child?”
“No no, like an adult that just doesn’t get very big.”
“Unkai?”
“Oh for fuck’s sake Jacky.”
_________________________________________________________________________________
“Yeah there you go, that’s straight five. You beat him,” Saph said, giving Edita a pat on the back. She had picked up card games rather swiftly, and even the beer was going down well enough. Raulf had asked if she liked it, after which she had answered
“It’s very good, yes. Much better than the ration flasks used for expeditions normally.”
The farmer had grumped a bit about his work getting compared to field rations, but nevertheless, Edita scarfed it down. They had set about teaching her some card games, and she had proved quite quick at learning. Much to the chagrin of Balethon, who had just lost a hand he had been certain of winning. “Oh okay. So what now?”
“Now you get to choose two who have to drink.”
“Oh I see… but aren’t you supposed to drink in a drinking game?”
“Yes and no. You still win so you punish the others, but you will lose soon enough so you get drunk too.”
“Oooh riight.. Ahr, I have to drink!” she declared.
“You forgot about number two,” Balethon added, still seeming a bit grumpy as he gathered up the cards, Jacky staring him down as he did so. He had tricked her quite badly last round, so she was not happy.
“Oh right… you then, skul!” she went raising her mug of bubble beer.
“Oh come on!” he protested, though he did pick up his mug too “Also it’s deeper. Skoool.”
Edita thought for a second while holding her mug still in the air, then she turned to Sapphire. “It’s working! I don’t care!”
That got a good chuckle out of Saph and a few of the others as the music track changed once more. They had no idea what was being sung, but it sounded good. Essy singing along, with Kokashi on her lap, or at least mimicking the song as best she could. Unkai and Fengi were sitting in a corner talking which was very good. Tom was sitting with Jacky also trying to learn the game they were playing. Of course since there was an element of deception involved the human was doing quite well as usual.
Saph however had not had much luck and had essentially taken on the role of teacher for Edita. It was quickly becoming clear the artificer was quite the lightweight. That or possibly the needlefruit liquor was more potent than at first expected. Saph had managed to sneak in a little sip from Edita’s glass, with her permission of course, and it was certainly an interesting flavor. Almost a hint metallic, and definitely sweet but not extremely so.
Some of Baron’s crew had joined the game of cards as well, notably Major Latori. He was one of the more refined members of the crew, and Saph mostly remembered him for having been helpful all the way back when they had the bitch to deal with.
As a new hand was passed around and Edita got a look at hers, showing them to Saph as well, a clawed hand was suddenly laid upon Sapphire's right shoulder. Turning around, she caught Maiko trying to duck out of the way behind Edita and not get spotted. “My head goes all the way around dumb dumb,” she chuckled, turning around to her left instead to not strain her neck to look at the manchild. “I was wondering when you would show up?”
“Weeeell I had a thing or two to do now didn’t I. Speaking of which, I believe this is for you,” he said, holding out a small ornate box.
Saph tried her best to seem genuinely surprised that he had thought of something for her. She had expected him to of course, but it was only courteous to pretend. “Ohh Maiko, is that for me? Thank you,” she went, taking the small box, the guy standing up straight with a big smile on his face, clearly expecting her to like the contents.
‘I bet you it’s earrings or something like that,’ Saph mused to herself, glancing at her nice new ring which she was wearing already.
Opening the little box she was right. It was a pair of plain silver earrings. Simple, yet elegant. ‘He is only a corporal after all.’
“They are lovely. And not so over the top I can’t wear them every day,” she went, looking to him with a warm smile. He for his part seemed steadfast. She didn’t have to mention she definitely had silver earrings for everyday use already, but she supposed her ears were long enough for two pairs. She started to take them out of the box to have a look at them more closely as he made his way around to sit on the far side of Edita.
“So what are we up to here?” the corporal asked, looking round at the table.
“We’re just teaching the newbies how to play five claw,” Jacky replied, throwing a glance to Sapphire as she was holding her earrings up to study.
Saph didn’t know if Tom had gotten Jacky anything or not, but it wouldn’t seem like the dude to not. He was actually rather thoughtful as long as he remembered in the midst of all the stuff he was doing.
“Yes! And I am learning to drink!” Edita declared far too loudly as she inspected her cards closely. Saph didn’t really need to help her anymore at this point, and the fact that even a child could read her face when she had something good was her own problem.
“Oh you are?” Maiko questioned without missing a beat, leaning over Sapphire’s lap to get a look at her cards. “Oh dear. Well good luck.”
“What do you mean? That’s very good,” Edita protested, Maiko letting out a belated breath.
“Right, next lesson in cardgames. Deception.”
“No no, we mustn’t lie.”
“What are you on about? The Inquisition lies all the time.”
“He would know, he’s very good at it,” Sapphire joined in as she measured up the new earrings to her ears. ‘Maybe I should get a second set of holes made for them?... hmmmm.’
“But it’s not okay to lie. That can get people hurt!”
“Not in a cardgame,” Maiko replied in good humor, now more or less lying across Sapphire. “Try it. See if you can trick them.”
“Good luck, Tom is like a crooked old trader. He could sell you an old stick claiming it’s the bone of a holy saint,” Sapphire added as she wondered if anyone would perhaps have gotten a handheld mirror she could borrow for a bit.
“Thank you,” Tom replied with a nod and a chuckle as he glanced to Jacky, who just rolled her eyes.
“You lie?” Edita questioned with an almost childlike curiosity, looking to Tom. Like a little girl learning her mother didn’t just get the food from the cupboards.
“Sure, it’s handy at times. The tricky bit is knowing when to lie.”
“Yeah, just think of Joelina and Paulin. They are real good at lying.”
“Oooh yeaaa… I guess soo… So I have to be good at it too?”
“If you wanna win at five claw you do,” Maiko confirmed.
“Oh okay then. Will you help me?” she questioned, looking to the Corporal.
“Sure. Step one, try to see if you can express that you are disappointed even though you are not.”
“She could also just try the stonewall Joelina approach,” Tom added, as the artificer pondered this new interesting challenge. “I cannot read that woman Joelina for the life of me.”
“I doubt she has emotions to read,” Jacky grumbled, Saph looking to Tom, who seemed less than convinced by that statement.
“Well you would know wouldn’t you, Tom? You’ve been in her head. What’s in there?” Sapphire questioned, taking a swig of her mug of ale. They had kept the cider to one small mug per person, and even then she could still feel the sugar high which was yet to wear off. Dancing to the music had handled most of the excess energy, but not all so it was definitely ale from now on.
“Oh I wouldn’t know anything about that,” the human dismissed taking a swig of his own mug.
“Oh come on. You must know something. For someone who got your mind ripped apart by someone, you don’t seem to hate her much.”
Tom didn’t reply to that one immediately, taking a second to mull it over. Edita opened her mouth as if to speak, but thought better of it.
“She’s a hard woman. Born tough and made tougher. In Danish we have a saying. ‘The thief thinks everyone steals.’ It means everyone tends to assume everyone else thinks just like themselves. She thinks you work like she does. Cold, cynical, uncompromising. She doesn’t care what gets in her way. She’ll get it done. That includes people hating her. It’s just irrelevant twaddle to her. She has a job and cares for nothing else,” the human replied before taking another quick swig.
“That’s why she’s suddenly decided to shower us with gifts and goodwill. She has no idea whatsoever how to make a friend cause she has none. Not really,” he carried on. “Well maybe Glazz or Paulin I guess. So I don’t think she’s evil or anything like that. But she only has eyes for one thing. Get in between her and that thing, she won’t hesitate to put you down. She won’t even think about it. Not outside of what problems it might lead to. I think it best to just stay important to her, and don’t come across as if you are working against her. Then she’s also perfectly happy to give you what you want to continue being useful, because it’s far easier than trying to make friends.”
There was silence for a moment afterwards as people mulled over what the human meant with all that. Saph wondered if maybe the cider had gotten to him or something.
“Naaaaaah,” Edita then broke out, all heads turning wearily to her. “She’s a big softy the others say. She does things like, let you go. Or maybe even giving a small little sentence if it’s someone who only did a little bad thing.”
The artificer certainly had Tom’s attention with that. The human seemed about as skeptical as the artificer was sloshed.
“I heard Paulina talk about a time Joelina even let some children live… they had stolen something, can’t remember what it was… I also think she then used them as spies or something. I didn’t really understand that. But that sounds like a nice thing to do. Something about finding poor people, who were evil.”
“She blackmailed children into spying on poor people?” Sapphire questioned, giving the artificer a side eye.
Edita took a second to ponder that one, scratching behind her ear. “Well when you put it like that.”
“Either way. We can work with her,” Tom interrupted, looking to the artificer and holding up his mug for a clink. “Cheers, I think we need some more of this.”
“Oh yeah, Just don’t tell Paulin, I didn’t ask for permission.”
“Not a word, we all promise. We won’t tell her anything about all this.”
“Awww thank you, Tom.” A few mugs were bashed together and Tom took a hearty swig. Edita mimicking like she so often did.
‘Oooh shit is he trying to get her pissed? That can’t end well… Can it?’
_________________________________________________________________________________
They had kept playing the card game for some time, though later they had switched to just telling stories and the like. It became more and more clear that Edita was a lightweight and she was copying whatever Tom did. So when he told stories, she told stories. When he took a swig, she took a swig. He did feel a little bad, but they were getting more out of her than they had ever gotten out of Paulin and Joelina, and unlike those two it seemed Edita could be trusted to tell the truth, if only for the fact that when she did lie it was painfully obvious.
It of course didn’t help that basically everyone had either worked out what was happening or thought getting drunk and having fun was a brilliant idea in its own right. Tom had been working on ways to get Edita under four eyes or at least only in the company of trustworthy keepdwellers, but doing that without arousing suspicion had been rather hampered by the story telling escalating to include crews from both traders, some of Baron’s crew, and even Radexi chiming in.
Tom had waved over some of the keep’s guards, hoping that they could displace some of the visitors further down the lengths of the table. The only one properly displaced was Maiko, who seemed to decide he had better things to do and excused himself, promising Saph that he wouldn’t be gone for too long. As for the rest of the boys, they of course needed to talk with the drunken girl as much as possible, which wasn’t much of an upgrade.
“Yoo Edita… is it okay if I call you Edi?” Herron tried, himself either quite tired or quite inebriated but still having managed to squeeze in next to Edita.
“Suure suuure. Just don’t call me Edit. All the others made fun of me when I got something wrong… Edit has to edit now they would go… it wasn’t very funny at all.”
“Oh no no, I will just call you Edi. I-”
“What sort of mistakes, any fun ones?” Saph interjected, the huntress having stayed with Tom and Edita pretty much the whole night. Tom was quite convinced she had worked out what he was up to, and seemed to be helping out. “Anything not just about weird machines?”
Herron took the cue and fell silent, having a look at his mug and taking a swig. Edita pondered the question for a bit instead, seemingly finding it a tough one to answer.
“Not machines hmmm… Oh oh one time I remember me and Teskar got in trouble for using one of the targeting scopes for spying on the city. He hadn’t seen a city before and I wanted to show him. All the little people walking around. We found a mother and tried to follow her, mapping out her whole day! It was very good fun!” Edita replied enthusiastically.
“And how did that end up with you having to fix something?”
“Oh… sorry. No, we just got caught and had to do cleaning work for weeks… It was very boring.”
“No no nothing to be sorry for, this Teskar, did you know him well?”
“Oh no, he was from a fortress out west. Not too far from Crownhall. They have an ancient thinking machine there which they guard.”
“Wait as in actually working, I thought you had all those in storage?” Tom interjected, suddenly seeming interested.
“Oh it is in storage, but it is the largest one we know about. Maybe one day I could get to see it… It must be so beautiful,” the artificer carried on, turning all doey eyed as she stared up at the wall with her head resting on her hands.
“Riiight… but tell me more about the Teskar. Did you like him?” Saph questioned, Tom grumping a bit.
‘God dammit Saph, let her spill the beans.’
“Oh he was very funny. His accent was all weird too. It is a long way to Crownhall. I have never left the capital before coming here, so he told me stories about it. It is warm, strange things grow there, like cherries.”
“Edita, cherries grow here too?” Herron added, sounding sleepy and confused.
“They dooo?!"
“Yeah… wait they do, right?” The guard questioned, looking down the table to his fellow guards, which probably didn’t sit that well with Sapphire. Tom threw a glance at her, and she did look a touch grumpy much to his own amusement.
“Yeah man, they just like lower flying islands and all that. You know, warmer,” Balethon added.
“Ohhh that makes sense… I think. Did anyone get any pickled cherries?” the young guard questioned, looking around at everyone. No one came forward, even if someone did have any they probably weren’t in the mood for sharing with a keep and a half.
Tom had to ponder that for a bit. Of course it made sense, and Apuma had been talking about how further south the border with the bugs was a tricky proposition. Dragonettes tended to hold the higher flying islands further south, and the bugs settled closer to the water substantially further north.
“Awww man those things taste great,” Herron complained, taking another swig of beer which likely didn’t help his energy levels.
‘Oooh the cider of course, that’s why they are all so sluggish right about now,’ Tom thought to himself, feeling a bit dumb as he looked to Saph once more. She did seem a little drab, but not as much as the guards. Maybe she had shared her mug with someone else or something.
“I’ve never had any either… Teskar ate them all,” she went with a sniff, shifting her grip on her mug. “I should get some one day. Are they expensive?”
“I mean a little,” Saph said with a shrug. “It’s preserved fruit. It’s worth a pretty penny, but it’s no worse than so many other things.” That did seem to brighten the artificer’s mood a little, a dumb smile spreading on her face.
“Why didn’t you buy any if you wanted to try them?” Herron questioned. “Did you forget? I forget loads of things.”
“No I didn’t forget… I just didn’t think of it.”
“Hehe, you forgot,” he repeated, clearly greatly amused.
“No no I told you. I just didn’t think of it… There are soo many things I have heard of that I want to try.”
“Like what?” the dude questioned, looking to her, seeming only half awake.
‘Oh well might as well let them do some questioning,’ Tom chuckled to himself, giving up on getting more out of her for now without someone catching on.
The next 10 or 20 minutes devolved into talks of all sorts of exotic or favorite foods people knew. A few were even brought out. Tom partook as well of course, but Edita was quickly becoming the center of attention as they started to work out just how many things she had never had before. Different kinds of sausages, air dried hams, all sorts of dried fruits and berries. Tom was honestly learning quite a lot as well about the selection of foods to be found around these parts. He definitely approved of the heavily smoked ham Herron had gotten. The smell ooh the smell, it was wonderful.
And someone had the bright idea to give Edita a candy. That someone being Balethon. Tom made a note to remember to ask him just where he had gotten his hands on that one, but for now he didn’t mind as Edita started talking faster and faster and faster.

2024.05.27 19:12 villainouscinema Asteroid City via Villainous Cinema

a review by Evan Landon
“You can't wake up if you don't fall asleep...”
I do enjoy Wes Anderson flicks. I really do. They have an artistic quality that is almost so synonymous, it should be it's own word; like “Orwellian” or “Kubrickian”... “Andersonian”? By the way, why haven't we had a Wes Anderson & Nicolas Cage team up?! Holy shit, that would write itself! That being said, I am not entirely sure where that this would line up in my favorite Wes Anderson flicks. Maybe I will make that list someday, but that's not why I am writing this review. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why I write reviews, but it is something I do anyways.
I kind of hesitated putting this on my “Bestest” or “Worstest” lists of 2023 for a few reasons:
I did not watch it yet. I kind of knew where it was gonna go, as far as the plot was concerned. I knew it was gonna be polarizing to say the least. Whenever you get a movie that every pseudo-intelligent “cinemaphile” adores, I am usually the first one to roll my eyes, but I think everyone kinda does that when that happens. Being a pretentious dickhead that certain websites will give $20 for their opinion does not give you clout any in my mind, nor any sane person who actually cares about what they consider art nouveau is. I'm not going to go into that kinda rant like now, so I'm going to focus on Asteroid City, to which I can lazily say Wesley put just as much emphasis on this as he usually does which is about as much work as he puts into most of his work these days. Believe it or not, I think the whole backdrop that he conjured up where it's a stage play of people playing their own characters is actually pretty brilliant. Letting his cavalcade of actors roam with their characters is an easy thing to do, but I think he has been doing that for a while now. He has a comfortable little bubble and he knows how to use it, so I won't get on his case about that even though you should listen to his rants at his production crew that get captured on disc because every movie made after 1930 has sound that is recorded. I promise that he wouldn't speak to any of his actors that way.
This was just garbled and boring for me because I honestly kept being taken out of which character was whom, what their true artifice or endeavor is, nor why I should even care about any of them to begin with. It has truly become “style over substance” for Weslenderson nowadays and I think I'm going to trademark that, or not because I don't really care about his movies that much anymore.
It's not his best work, but not his worst either and while it’s not the best movie I saw from last year, it’s not the worst either. The characters are as quirky as the sets and editing, but like I said, it feels like he is phoning this one in. Confusing in its attempt to be stylish, the whole thing comes off like they are making it up as they go. It’s the definition of “mid”.

2024.05.27 18:05 CountryTomato [PI] In a world where magic exists, everyone is tested for magic potential at the age of 18. Paisley Greendale's results were... unexpected to say the least.

The original prompt can be found here.
Paisley sat on the wooden bench outside of the director’s office. She had watched the dust motes drift in the sunbeams filtering through the hall’s windows until the light had sunk behind the trees. Stars had started to appear thirty minutes ago.
Her stomach rolled and she wasn’t sure if it was hunger or nerves. She’d taken the test with the rest of the students this morning. She hadn’t cheated - that was impossible anyways - and she thought she’d done okay but instead of receiving her results with the rest of the students, she’d been called to the office and had been waiting outside ever since.
Paisley had tried listening through the thick oak door, but her attempts had been foiled when the director cast a spell to muffle their words. Important people began showing up shortly after.
The Governor. Principals of Iron Gate and Leeway and Thorn Universities. Heads of the Magic Regulation and Testing Departments. Others she didn’t recognize. Each gave her an odd look as they left, but not one said a word.
Paisley itched to stand up, to pace, to peek through the window to the office, but she forced herself to sit, her knee bouncing in anticipation.
Finally, the door opened.
“Miss. Greendale,” the director’s assistant said, holding the door open.
Paisley stood and straightened her skirt then nervously stepped into the office, her legs tingling from having sat for so long.
“Have a seat.” The director motioned to an empty chair across from his desk.
Behind him stood one of the heads from the Testing Department and the Governor's assistant. Paisley felt her throat go dry.
“I apologize for making you wait for so long,” the man said once Paisley had sat. “This has been rather an… interesting afternoon.” The director gave a small chuckle that didn’t have much levity.
Paisley looked at the man and woman standing behind the director. The head of the Testing Department, a middle aged woman wearing bright red lipstick, gave her a small smile. The governor’s assistant didn’t quite meet Paisley’s eyes.
The director cleared his throat. “To cut to the chase, you did well on the exam. Very well.”
“I didn’t cheat!” Paisley clapped a hand over her mouth. She stared at the small group with wide eyes.
The head of the Testing Department licked her lips. “Of course you didn’t,” she said after a moment. “That’s impossible.”
“That makes your score all the more remarkable.” The director hesitated. “Your score was off the charts.”
“What?” Paisley wasn’t sure she had heard him correctly.
“Your magical potential is higher than anyone in history.”
“What?” Paisley’s voice came out a whisper.
The director nodded.
“B-but that’s not,” Paisley cleared her throat. “That’s not possible. The last person who scored so high…”
“You are three orders of magnitude more powerful than him.”
Paisley stared at the man. He had to be joking. This had to be a joke. The test had to be wrong.
“That’s not possible,” she said, her voice cracking.
“The test isn’t wrong,” the testing department head said.
Paisley shook her head. She had grown up with the stories.
Charlie Barrows. Nearly two decades ago, he had scored two magnitudes higher than the most powerful mages of the day. He had been treated like a prince. The country’s golden child. The best schools. The best teachers. His pick of careers. The world had been laid at his feet. Everyone expected incredible things from him.
Just over five years later, Charlie Barrows snapped. It had taken a small army to stop him, but he’d still escaped.
They never found him.
Now, people pretended he never existed, hoping he didn’t resurface.
Infamous. Deadly. Wanted.
“I’m not like him.”
The director shifted in his seat and glanced over Paisley's shoulder at his assistant. “Of course not,” he said, eyes flicking back to Paisley.
Paisley could have sworn she heard uncertainty in his voice.
“For now, we would like to keep this quiet,” the director continued. “As you may have already guessed, the Governor and the heads of the Magic Departments have been notified, as have the Principles of some of the country’s most prestigious universities. They have begun reaching out to colleagues to begin tutoring.”
Paisley’s head spun. No. No, no no. This wasn’t happening. It was just like the stories.
“I-I don’t want that,” she said.
The director shook his head. “You have a gift, Miss. Greendale. You can help a lot of people.”
Paisley shook her head.
“Just think about it. We’ve contacted your parents, and they are waiting for you outside. They are aware of your potential. Talk it over with them.” The director nodded, signaling the end of the conversation.
After an entire afternoon of waiting, Paisley stood. Her knees shook, but she steeled herself as she turned her back and slowly walked out the door.
Paisley couldn’t be sure if the ride home had been quiet or if her parent’s praises had been muffled by the roaring in her head. She remembered the time she’d been swimming at the lake as a kid and had slipped and lost her footing. The water was murky and she couldn’t be sure which direction was up as the current tugged at her clothes, dragging her along. The voices were quiet and indistinct until a pair of hands caught her and thrust her to the surface.
The orb glowed from the stand on her desk. She wasn’t sure she wanted to talk to anyone. Not yet.
Paisley tapped the crystal ball and Eliza’s smiling face shimmered into existence.
“Lili!” Eliza shrieked, bouncing with excitement. “You’ll never guess! Call me back!”
Paisley swiped to the next message.
“Hey Paze, call me back,” Eliza said, more subdued. “I didn’t see you at the reception. Is everything okay?”
“Seriously, Paisley,” Eliza said in the next message. “Is everything okay? No one has seen you since the test. Did something happen? Call me back.”
Paisley sighed. She really wanted to collapse on her bed and forget today even happened, but she placed her palm on the orb and thought of Eliza’s face.
“You’re alive!” Eliza said a split second later. “I was going to send out a search party.”
Paisley gave a small smile. She knew Eliza had been waiting near her own orb.
“You’re up late,” she said.
“And you look terrible. What happened?”
Paisley hesitated. “Long story,” she finally said. “How was the test?”
Eliza held up her certificate. “Guess who is a brand new class B mage!”
“That’s amazing! What step?”
“Nine! It’s not incredibly high, but I’ll be able to study Alchemical Warding!”
“That’s amazing.”
Eliza had always hoped to study alchemy. A bridge between the magics and the sciences. She had studied hard and with that potential, she’d get into a good school.
“How did you do?”
Paisley glanced away from Eliza, her face distorted and shimmery in the glowing sphere.
“It’s a long story. I’m not supposed to talk about it.”
“Was it bad? Is that why you weren’t at the ceremony?”
Paisley barked a laugh. The absolute irony. She had looked forward to the ceremony for years. She had worked so hard for even a chance at attending. Only those with a high enough potential could attend.
Eliza’s face dropped. “Oh. Oh no. Pails, I’m so sorry. I know how much you wanted this.”
Paisley shook her head and laughed. It wasn’t something to laugh at, and she couldn’t quite explain it, but she laughed. She clutched her stomach and tears rolled down her face and Eliza watched, utterly perplexed, from twenty miles away.
“Paisley?”
Paisley gasped for breath and wiped at the tears streaming down her cheeks. She wasn’t sure if they were from laughing or stress or anger.
“This is so stupid.” Paisley scrubbed at the tears with the back of her hand. “I just… it’s been a long day.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Yes. Paisley desperately wanted to talk about it. Paisley needed to talk about it. But she wasn’t supposed to talk about it.
“Please,” Paisley said quietly. “You can’t say anything. To anyone.”
Eliza sat in shock when Paisley finished.
“Three orders of magnitude?”
Paisley nodded.
“But, how?” Eliza shook her head. “That’s…”
“Incredible? Amazing? Impossible?” Paisley snorted. “I don’t want this.”
Eliza was quiet. Paisley could hear a faint tapping and knew Eliza was drumming her fingers on her desk as she thought.
“You could do a lot of good with that kind of power.”
“Everyone knows potential doesn’t necessarily equate to power.”
“Unrealized potential,” Eliza corrected. “Your options are limitless.”
Paisley was quiet and the silence stretched between them. Then Eliza stopped drumming her fingers.
“You could also be incredibly dangerous.”
Paisley’s mom shook her awake the next morning two hours before her alarms were set to go off. Light from the front yard filtered through her blinds and cast stark lines across her bed and wall.
“Honey,” her mom said, worry tingeing her voice. “You need to wake up.”
Paisley sat up, bleary eyed. She thought she heard a commotion coming from the front yard.
“What’s going on?”
“Get dressed, honey. There’s people from the Magic Department here for you.”
“What?” Paisley was awake now. “What’s wrong? What’s happening?”
“It’s okay, honey. Just get dressed. They’re waiting for you in the living room.”
When her mom left the room, Paisley slipped to the window and peaked through the blinds. Vans lined the street and the yard was filled with people and cameras and microphones. Someone saw the blinds shift and a few of the cameras started to pan towards her. Paisley dropped the blinds and backed away from the window, her breath coming in quick gasps.
Someone talked.
Paisley quickly threw on some clothes not really caring what they looked like and rushed to the living room. One of the department heads she had seen yesterday stood talking to her parents. Six more men and women wearing business suits and looking like they got a full eight hours of sleep stood alert near the doors and windows.
“Miss. Greendale,” the head said. “I am Mage Selket. I apologize for the early house call, but as you may have guessed from the media parked on your lawn, word has gotten out about your potential. I’ll be frank. This is a precarious situation. People are on edge from the events twenty years ago. We are here to escort you to a safe house until the situation can be resolved. First, I need to know. Did you tell anyone?”
Paisley blinked. She resisted the urge to say ‘Hi Frank, I’m dad’ and tried to process everything he’d said despite the brain fog. Eliza. She’d told Eliza. But Eliza wouldn’t have said anything.
Paisley shook her head. Mage Selket raised an eyebrow and Paisley resisted the urge to blurt out Eliza’s name.
After a moment Selket shrugged. “Do you have a bag packed?”
Before Paisley could say no, her mom handed her a duffle.
“Just some clothes and toiletries until we can bring you some more.”
“You’re not coming?”
“We need to move quickly,” Selket said. “Your parents will be fine.”
Paisley’s mom helped her into a coat. “We’ll bring you some more of your things once things calm down,” she whispered, then gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“Keep your head down,” Selket said. “And say nothing.”
Before she could say another word, Paisley was ushered out the door into a cacophony of voices. Cameras flashed and microphones were pushed at the group. She heard her name called over and over and she resisted the urge to find the faces belonging to the voices she didn’t recognize. The people in business suits cleared a small bubble around her as they hurried her through the mob.
Suddenly, the air beside her compressed and she heard a small pop as a man appeared.
She looked up at him. His sharp nose and curly hair. Something about him seemed familiar.
“Paisley Greendale, I presume?” he asked with a smile.
Paisley heard someone in the ground gasp. It was followed by a split second of silence then yelling as Paisley’s suited guards turned too slowly.
The man placed a hand on her shoulder and bent closer to her ear to be heard over the tumult.
“Charlie Barrows,’ he said loudly. “Hold your breath.”
With a pop, they were gone.
Paisley sat on a plush carpet as Charlie Barrows pounded her on the back between the shoulder blades.
“Breathe, Paisley! Breathe!”
Paisley gasped for breath and began to cough. The edges of her vision fuzzed. It felt like all the air had been squeezed from her lungs.
“There you go,” Charlie said, standing up once Paisley had caught her breath.
She looked around, dazed.
“Where?” she wheezed.
“Welcome to my house,” Charlie said. He grasped her elbow and helped her to her feet. “Apologies for the abrupt rescue. Would you care for some tea? Coffee? Caffeine would probably do you good.”
Paisley was pretty sure she should be furious or terrified or some other emotion befitting a kidnapping, but she was too shocked and tired to fully process everything that had happened. Thirty minutes ago, she’d been sound asleep.
She studied the tall man. He looked normal. An older version of the pictures, but not the terrifying, inhuman monster she’d imagined as a kid. And judging from the shelves lining the walls, an avid reader.
“Coffee, I think,” Charlie said. He clapped his hands together. “We have a lot to discuss. This way!”
He abruptly turned and left the room. Paisley stood for a moment, then she grabbed her bag and followed.
Paisley hesitantly sat at the counter. She looked around the clean but poorly stocked kitchen. The coffee maker in the corner began to bubble and soon the warm smell of cheap coffee filled the small room.
“Do you like toast?” Charlie fiddled with a toaster that looked to be nearly a century old and a major electrical hazard.
Paisley ignored his question. “Why am I here?” she asked quietly.
“Now that is a very complicated question that delves both into scientific and theological aspects," he said over his shoulder. "I believe that every person on the planet has a unique role to fill, a destiny if you may, though a destiny you can shape. If-”
“No,” Paisley interrupted. “What’s going on? Why am I here? Why did you…” She didn’t want to actually say ‘kidnapped’.
“Oh, for your protection.”
“My protection?”
Charlie turned around, confused. “Of course, why else…” He trailed off as realization began to dawn. “Oh. Oh dear. I’ve kidnapped you, haven’t I? Oh dear. But I assure you that was not my intention. You may leave. I’ll pay for transport. Whatever you need. I only ask you to listen to what I have to say first. Do you like eggs?”
Paisley shook her head.
Charlie opened a bag of bread and dropped two slices in the toaster. “There is a lot more to this than what any of those people will ever tell you. You shouldn’t have to learn like I did. And you should be able to choose for yourself.”
Paisley thought for a moment.
“Again, I have no ill will toward you, and you are certainly free to leave at any time,” Charlie said. “I am fully aware of my reputation.”
“You’re not what I expected,” Paisley finally said.
“I should hope not.”
“Well, for one of the most powerful mages in the world, your toast is burning.”

2024.05.27 15:02 3owls-inatrenchcoat I feel abandoned by my best friends and now I don't want to even go on living honestly

This is bigger than just my best friends and I'm going to try to give as much context in as few words as possible (because man I can ramble), but they are the factor currently making me spiral.
Background information on me: I'm 34NB with a whole host of mental illness/neuroses that I've been working on the last 8 years (medication trial-and-error, different therapies, etc) and I'm on a waitlist to be potentially diagnosed with autism even though I mask extremely well in public. Approximately a year ago I was blindsided by being fired with "no cause" (read: I'm mentally ill and slightly inconvenient. I can't prove it and it wouldn't do any good if I could because of the shitty labor ministry). It was soul-crushing and completely destroyed all my happiness and hope for the first 6 months I couldn't even job search because I lost every ounce of confidence I had (which was already very, very little). I'm in my house all day and even though I try to go out, it's all surface-level interaction with acquaintances, never the deep connection I'm looking for.
Background information on the friendship: My two best friends (both 34 also) and I have been a group of 3 for the last decade, brought together by common interests. In the first few years we used to have sleepovers once a month and hung out once a week to watch a show together. Slowly these hangouts dwindled to maybe once a month total, then every few months (because of their stuff; I'm the weirdo who would move heaven and earth to make time for them). Then, 2 years ago, one moved to another city that's a 5+ hour drive, which was one of the worst times of my life, but I just wanted her to be happy... and even though I knew she was lying when she said she would be coming back to visit all the time since us and her whole family lives here, I wanted it to be true. We have our 3 person group chat that's been active since we met, Some people can survive on just chatting online, and though I need in-person interaction, I tried to settle for what I could get.
PRESENT DAY:
Look, I know I'm a weirdo and outlier when it comes to friendships. In my head, it's like I have two separate cups that need to be filled, one for romantic relationship and one for friendships. I'm happily married and my spouse is another best friend, but I've always been the kind of person who puts my platonic best friends at the same level of importance. Like, when it comes to love, I don't feel that I love my friends less than my partner, it's just a completely separate kind of love that's equally necessary for me. I'm aware most people can have friendships come and go without feeling bad. I've spent years teaching myself that what other people do is rarely personal and just a result of them living their life, so please don't think I'm all main character syndrome. I don't make anyone else responsible for my feelings... which I guess is why I'm writing this...
Both of them are now dating seriously again (6+ months) and I know that generally upsets the previous balance of friendships, trust me I've been ignored by friends many times in my life the second they entered a relationship. I've been trying to adjust even though it hurts. They were both in steady relationships at the beginning of our friendship and still came over every week so maybe I got confused. Anyway, that's one contributing factor.
A few months ago I noticed, in our group chat, that I was no longer seeing the little bubble confirming that the messages had been read by one of them. I've spent the last 2 years adjusting to the fact that clearly we no longer have the "chatting all day and night" relationship, that they were at least reading the messages even if they never got around to replying (often several days would pass and then one of them would come in with something on a different topic). I asked about it and she said that she turned off her notifications for every messaging app because she was too overwhelmed (context: this friend is a people-pleaser to the point of her own destruction and a workaholic who frequently puts in 12-14 hour work days of her own accord in a director-level position, plus her family is all weaponized incompetence and text her to solve every problem). I tried to figure this was fair, and temporary. But it's been months and now it'll be days, if not a whole week, between her checking the chat.
Then yesterday... after many days of silence she messaged "how y'all doing? due to an injury I can't do much and figured I'd take a sec to say hi". I'm honestly so hurt I've been crying on and off since reading that. I guess I've now become so unimportant that she only bothers to message when she literally can't do anything else?
This is the same person who visited for the first time in 6 months back in March, and it felt like I was booking an appointment with a contractor. "Okay, I can slot you in between 11 and 1." I'm not even joking. I know she had family stuff to do too but as best best friends for so long (I was actually friends with her first and she introduced me to the other one) I thought I would retain at least a LITTLE importance in her life. No I didn't fuss about it - I gladly took the scraps I could get and thoroughly enjoyed the time together. But it's kind of like when you're starving and only get a morsel of food... it's almost better to keep starving than being reminded what eating is like.
My other friend still very much lives in the same city as me, and in fact recently moved closer to my place (not walking distance, but no longer a 30 minute Uber ride), and she too promised that now she was closer we'd hang out a lot more - that was probably over 3 months ago and I haven't even seen the new house, let alone spent any time together. She tells me that "when I really start focusing on working out and eating healthily, it just takes a whole lot of my time and focus". Again, I want her to be happy and healthy of course. I'm not a petulant child so it's not like I've gotten mad at them or even lashed out, no matter how much my heart is aching with loneliness every single day.
I always thought of myself as a good friend, and though I'm far from perfect, I don't think I've given anyone a reason to distance themselves, but... I once heard someone say "If no one wants to spend time with you, then maybe you need to be be more pleasant to spend time with". I also know how often I see the whole "some friends just grow out of your life" thing, and I've also seen many a saying about how if people show you how they are, then you should listen.
Maybe I'm just having a really hard time believing that the two people I've been closest to for a freaking third of my life could lose interest in our friendship like that. Or only message me as a last resort when there's literally nothing better to do. Even if it's not malicious (which I don't think it is, again, I don't think I'm so important I would affect anyone enough to change their behavior in such a bad way), it's still being forgotten. It's still being knocked off the list of priorities. It's still lonely and painful.
Oh, you might be wondering, what about other friends? Well, I was raised by narcissists, and literally since childhood, I've always ended up being close friends with people who bully me. And not like schoolyard bully, but people who would guilt trip me, manipulate me, make me feel bad about myself if anything didn't align with what they wanted... just like my parents. I thought that's what love looked like. And when I realized it wasn't, I ended up distancing myself from a lot of people. Other people I had to let go because while I'm happy to do like 75% of the work in a friendship I can't always do 100% and many people expected that. I also do still try to make new friends but it's almost impossible to start a new friendship from scratch in your 30s, as I've come to find out.
I can't keep a job for more than 2 years so I know I'm a disappointing employee. I don't have and never plan on having kids, and I'm not making money so I know I'm a disappointing child to my parents. I can't even manage to keep the entire house clean or cook proper meals despite unemployment, and though he's just the best person ever who has always supported me, I know I must be disappointing to my spouse. I never thought I'd be such a disappointing friend that no one would want to talk to me, much less spend time with me. It was the one thing I could hang my hat on, and now that I don't even have that, I just don't know what the point of going on even is. My body is clearly a lemon (so many chronic issues) and my brain is just plain defective - if I was a car I'd be written off, no mechanic would think it worth fixing.
I'm so sorry that this was as short as I could get it and still make good sense, there are so many other factors also contributing (a huge one being my parents falling deep into the ultra-right type movements when covid happened, my mom told me I was a disappointment when I mentioned getting vaccinated and in one argument about what a dictator is she actually said "well I guess you're not my daughter" and yeah that one doesn't heal so quick).
If you made it to the end, thank you so much for reading. If you didn't, I totally get it.

2024.05.27 08:28 NigerianPrince1242 Sooo I have a big problem...

Unfortunately, I'm not yet an artist (in the general sense, someone who makes music or paintings or writes etc.). I aspire to be one some day, and make a little progress every day, but am new. I understand that it takes constant work and effort to produce results, and this is not my issue that I ask about today just a background.
It has come to my nagging attention, that many of the ideas in my head are vague, but I desire to create them greatly; they are cool. In a few words, they capture the essence of an aesthetic that I haven't quite found other people making as of yet.
Here is my problem. How do I build my own ideas without inspiration like it seems everyone else does? We live in a constant flowing society with things building on each other, ideas taken from the unlikeliest of places, to build unique art that is ours. I however, haven't really found any piece of art I would like to emulate, just the ideas in my head which have been influenced by things but in a less concrete manner, just a bubble of things I like and dislike.
The problem comes with making a complete whole that encapsulates those ideas, the word choices, all of the decisions made only to serve that end goal. When details are added, because I suck at making details because I'm new, it breaks it down, makes it worse, causing me to doubt if I will ever see these things in reality rather than in my headspace.
I understand that you would learn the rules first then break them, but with nebulous and seemingly unobtainable ideas as the only source of inspiration, how can one proceed?
This may seem like an odd post, but it's something that deeply affects me (and has for around a year now) and would like some advice. I've tried google searches but they lead me nowhere and so I've come here.

2024.05.27 08:09 AstralBarnacle My crush for three years (M21) wants to be in a relationship with me (M19) and I'm realizing I'm not ready for a relationship at all. How do I keep from fucking this up?

So, I've been crushing on this dude for three fucking years, and I wasn't planning on telling him until maaaaaybe later this year (he's finally single again). He's gay but closeted to his family and all, I'm bi and closeted to almost everyone I know. He's always been kinda out of my league because he became an adult before I did and joined all these dating apps before I even knew he was gay (and by proxy available for me to date), so I thought I had NO chance. I still had feelings for him while I went through my first relationship, and that relationship really damaged my perception of love, and I've always thought of myself as very romantic and monogamous so when I was single again I kinda just loved him from a distance, accepting the fact that this guy wouldn't like me because he'd had all these experiences with big experienced guys and I'm not only severely inexperienced but also very self-conscious for so many different reasons.
Basically, I was not expecting HIM to randomly come to ME and ask me this whole giant thing about if I could ever see myself being in a relationship with him, and in absolute shock I obviously said yes, and that I had loved him for almost three years. Apparently he'd loved me for a couple years too, I still don't know why it took him so long to say anything but who am I to talk lmaooo
Before the conversation even ended, I was thinking about if I TRULY saw myself in a relationship with him, and I got very scared visualizing myself being openly in a relationship with a man. My parents have said they'd accept if I was gay but I know they want me to end up with a woman. I know they'd be disappointed to see me with a guy. And I wouldn't categorize this as internalized homophobia, but imagining myself being perceived as just "gay" or "the gay one" or even in this "gay man" social bubble just scares me to be perfectly honest, like I've already had enough trouble coexisting with people because all my childhood friends moved away and I didn't know how to socialize until my senior year of highschool. If I knew being with a dude wasn't going to shove me into this different social category I would feel so much more comfortable and would probably not be closeted.
I asked him if he'd be okay with waiting until I'm ready and he said he was fine with it, and that he was smiling all the time just knowing I reciprocated. I still cannot fucking believe he's the one saying that to me, granted I've been literally unable to not think about him romantically for the past three years, and I especially didn't want to fuck up the chance I just got out of nowhere, so we agreed to get closer as the friends we already were and I guess I'll tell him when I'm ready?? I feel bad for him but we've been basically flirting all the time since he confessed feelings to me so I think he'll get by. It honestly makes me feel more confident that I'll be able to transition what we have now into a relationship pretty well, but that's for later.
As for the reasons why I'm kind of horrified of dating him, one of the simplest reasons: he likes big fat guys and I'm the only guy at my college group who's borderline underweight right now. Talk about BAD LUCK LMAOOO. I'm planning on gaining more weight regardless, but I'd put on some extra pounds for him too I guess. The thing is, I have literally always hated how I look. My body and "proportions" aren't disappointing but they're nothing to write home about. I have a flared ribcage but apparently that's fucking fixable so like, okayyy. I could honestly really improve my look with just a better hairstyle. That's what I've learned: it's the hair. But basically, I feel like I'm so ugly sometimes that I literally lack the ability to believe it when somebody tells me they love me. I know looks aren't everything, but it gets so bad that I've lost feelings for people when they've shown romantic attraction to me. Almost like I don't respect them anymore if they "stoop low" and fall for me.
This is where things get a little weird. Gays definitely have a very different perception of relationships than straights so if any gays are reading this part, you know what's up. He's on this dating app where you can choose to basically only date chubby guys, and he brought me these dudes he found and we perved out a little bit together. At first I was conflicted and incredibly fucking jealous that he was on dating apps still, but he asked me if I was okay with it a few minutes later, and I was like "we're not even official yet, so if you're not meeting them in real life and not promising anything (and literally SHARING the dudes' photos with me) I think that's great". He wanted to be extremely sure about it so I gave him an ultimatum that he can mess around online until we're official in person, because I felt really bad about being unready for him but also not letting him even get his rocks off to other guys?? He was unsure about that so I promised I'd be communicative with him about my feelings on that stuff at all times, and I was like "as long as you share all the pics you get with me, you're all good" and he thought that was funny.
Another issue is that he moved literally hundreds of miles away from me last year and now he lives with his family. He brought that up today and it honestly broke my heart a little bit hearing him say he was unsure about how it would go down with his parents if he moved all the way back to me, someone who's skinny and closeted and skittish about relationships to an almost suspicious degree. Either way, it'll take a couple years longer for us to move in together anyway because we're both studying in our respective places. But like, he wants to leave his family and new friends for me? I still live with my family and I still can't imagine how things would go if I came out to them instead of keeping things peaceful and prosperous in the household while I remain closeted. Unless I end up with a woman somehow (fat chance when the MAN i've been after for the entire second half of my teen years just told me he loved me). I almost feel too attached to my family to come out, as horrible and contradictory as that sounds. I don't want to "do that to them". I still live with them, I'm still very close with them, and it feels bad to say it but I definitely need to grow up and stop relying on them and their opinions about me. I feel like I'm still in high school trying to date a college student based on the level of maturity we both display, and he thinks I'm cool as fuck, but I definitely feel like I need to grow up more.
Last thing is, and I guess I might need to do a trigger warning, I was molested for years as a kid, and it really, really screwed with my head a lot more than I thought now that I look back on it. It gave me some fucked up kinks, and kink stuff is common in gay circles, but I'm very scared to open up about them in general. That's the case for a lot of things: there are a lot of things that nobody knows about me that I've never had to tell anyone because I've never gotten close to anyone like that. I only just started talking about bad stuff that happened to me to some friends because I'm finally learning how to be close with friends as an adult. It's just scary giving someone my everything, especially when I hate a good chunk of who I am. I didn't communicate enough in my first relationship, so I've been telling this guy I love now everything I feel is necessary, and it does make me sound unstable and a little crazy. He's dealt with enough crazy in relationships before, so I would really love to be an easy boyfriend for him, but this early constant communication of my doubts on if he actually loves me definitely doesn't help me there.
Writing this actually gave me such a huge state of clarity over the situation. I feel like I don't even need to post it now, since I already feel like I know what I need to do. But I'll put it up so a few people can pick it apart and respond to parts if they want, maybe give me advice or words of wisdom, that'd be really appreciated :)
TLDR: My crush wants to date me but I'm immature/inexperienced, closeted, scared of opening up, and I'm just kinda skinny and he likes FAT guys. Also still cannot believe he liked me for years and never told me either like wtf man who would ever wait that long

2024.05.27 07:27 CAM_50 Cycle recap

What's good aspiring lawyers. Went back and forth about posting this as many of these esp on the other sub are insufferable egostroking eg 3.79/178 splitter success story, still debating b/t Ruby or Stanford...but while it was cathartic for me to write this I also honestly learned a lot through this sub so if this info helps anybody I consider that to be worth it. Apologies in advance for my long-windedness.
Stats: 3.0x, 169, Caucasian A's: Richmond $$$$ (attending), Duquesne $$, Pitt - WL's: Drexel, Temple, GW, American, St. John's, Marquette R: Wake Forest
Background: 10+ years of work experience, hated my job cuz of stagnation/low prospects for growth, presented "juicy" opportunities that you eventually realize have very low odds of coming to fruition (those in commission sales will understand), my wife signed me up for Jan LSAT bc she was tired of seeing me miserable and then I applied once I received my score knowing nothing about law school admissions. I applied many places on the literal deadline date in the assumption that I would get equal consideration with applicants who submitted earlier. Then I came on this and lsa sub and found out that was not the case. Ignorance can be bliss.
Personal statement: I think it was above average. I wrote about working menial jobs (janitor, commercial fisherman, door to door salesman, laborer) where there was a strain of anti-intellectualism and how I dealt with it. I alluded to but did not explicitly state that I worked and have lived as an adult in contact with people of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in the hope that it would distinguish me from younger applicants. I grew up in a lily white community so I know many kids go right from the cocoon to the bubble. Main thrust was conveying that at all my jobs I work my ass off. Advice: write about something that is not already apparent in your application but makes u distinct from other applicants and is something you are genuinely proud of. Also keep it to two pages. The first four apps I sent out it was two and a half, then one place required "no more than two". editing it down def made it tightebetter as I realized I had rehashed some stuff.
GPA: weakest part of my app, felt sheepish looking over transcript at some classes I just did not care about that should have been much higher grades Advice: take electives you give a shit about if u r in undergrad rn. Also I don't think adcomms have time to actually look at the transcript they just see the gpa. So maybe write an explanation/addendum if u only have a couple outliers. For instance as an English/pol sci major I got C's in calculus II (tbh this is the grade on my transcript of which I am the most proud as I failed the first test and absolutely grinded in office hours, etc with a prof who just flew through material, most exhilarating class of college career, math is amazing) and biology (curved against future doctors and shit, also grinded after bombing first test and having the professor tell me I should maybe drop). If those were my only classes that I did poorly in (they weren't) and pulled my gpa below a school's median I would want them to note that I should not be penalized for being academically adventurous and willing to go outside my comfort zone.
LORs: probably below average

1) from my boss, I had to edit this because the original was the most boring, boilerplate letter. chatgpt would have been embarrassed to have created it. Sample: he has worked on many projects and is skilled at sales and marketing. I had to be like maybe mention when I recouped $100k for a vendor by successfully appealing duplicate allowance charges from Amazon or salvaged the q4 sales season at Sam's club after vendor failed to deliver product for Labor Day by proposing replacement products, setting up new items and creating content that was up to spec. They want details damnit

2) from a client I worked closely with, it was pretty good, I did edit for clarity as she is from China and her English is not great

3) undergrad professor, reached out even though I am long out of school and surprisingly she was like pleasure to hear from you, happy to write a LOR. ended up not completing it - she is crazy busy with children, classes and publishing papers I assume so once I was in to Richmond I wrote her an email thanking her and saying not to bother. The fact she enthusiastically remembered me after so long was heartening tho (I'm not chummy with profs)

Advice: ask for these early and I think it is common practice to look them over before submission or at very least provide bullet points/outline of things u want them to mention. Don't assume that someone u have worked with for a long time will do a good job as they may be a terrible writer, busy or forgetful of anything productive you have done in your tenure with the company. For those significantly removed from UG, it can't hurt reach out to profs as I think this letter would actually have turned some of the WLs to As because most of the adcomms are academics and want to hear a fellow academic vouch for u in the classroom, esp if ur gpa is weak like mine
LSAT: I took 3 practice tests the week before the test date after my wife literally opened the practice book she bought me and started doing practice questions herself to get me to engage. Iykyk depression and procrastination/self-sabotage unfortunately go hand in hand. I planned to retake the test in April after I quit my job and studied more intensively. I thought this would be fine and boost my app (completely unaware that I was already extremely late in the cycle). Advice: make sure u time yourself on practice tests, don't keep going once time is up. Get used to marking all unfinished questions a default letter (I chose C) as this can't hurt u on test day. Although with removal of logic games I don't think it will still be as much of a time scramble.
Charactefitness addendum: I had to write one as I was suspended a month before graduation. I was drunk and passed out/asleep in public but then a campus safety officer used this as an opportunity to flex in front of a female coworker. Basically I was assaulted and then accused of assault. In regular court it basically became a fine for a noise complaint. In the private fiefdom of university justice where I was not allowed counsel, the officers told a tale in which the injuries they sustained after the confrontation necessitated an immediate trip to the hospital to acquire Percocet. Despite pointing out the farcical nature of their story and the obvious drug seeking behavior that undercut their credibility the conduct board found me guilty and I had to finish my education elsewhere (although through transfer credits I technically graduated from my original school once the suspension ended). Advice: it sucks to write these but first request your disciplinary record from the school so you know exactly what it says. Succinctly describe the infraction and take full responsibility, don't do what I did above. Then state how you moved past it. If you can't help yourself maybe throw in one clause like "although there were extenuating circumstances". I put a footnote to an op-ed that the head of the political science department wrote after he resigned as the faculty liaison to this conduct board following the initial briefing from the university's legal team. Basically he said he could not support a system that infringes on the basic rights of students. So I was calling the whole thing bullshit without saying it myself, but more like look at what this guy has to say about it. I thought law schools would respect that sort of legalese...
Miscellaneous: apply places you actually want to go to/think are feasible to get in. Applying is expensive and lsac "data release" or whatever is a racket.
Tl; Dr: I got lucky. Apply early. Get your materials together as soon as possible.
Conclusion: Shout out my wife for pushing me on this. I am excited to be a Spider. Best of luck to everyone in all your pursuits!

2024.05.27 06:58 Suvin_Is_A_Must [APPRECIATION POST] Shout out to gachas that can do exposition and worldbuilding without giving me a headache

This is praise-only post. I will not be bashing any games here. Also, if there are any other gachas that also do this well, please recommend them to me!
I get very intimidated every time I start a new gacha because I always have this sinking feeling that before I can get to the really fun part (pulling on the beginner banner), I'm going to spend a while trapped in what I personally term an "infodump bubble", basically, one of the main cast members becomes the lore machine and smacks me in the face with a bunch of buzzwords.
But sometimes I get pleasantly surprised when a gacha I'm trying out manages to not make it feel like a chore. Two things I've noticed my favourite gacha games do:
-Indicate I only have to focus on a single term/phrase. Usually will be related to the player's powers.
"Follow your star, follow your star, follow your star."
OR
"Use the shackles, use the shackles, use the shackles."
Personally, I want to be treated like I'm stupid when I'm playing the prologue of a game. The game doesn't think my brain is big enough to hear about the Great Big Secret Worcestershire Worldbreaking Armageddon Forcefield this early? Oh, thank fuck.
-Quickly establishes the personalities of the characters living in this fictional world.
Limbus Company does a great job at giving you a clear idea of what a character is like within one or two lines. I felt I could nail down their personalities even without reading through their profiles.
"Dante! Don't mind me if I call you by name. You can call me Rodya~"
"I am Yi Sang... Mhm. No smoke or mirrors."
"'Tis my turn to speak! I am Don Quixote! I am a Fixer who shall sprint for the dream side by side."
('referencing a scene dedicated to the character introductions is cheating', no problem, the earlier dialogue is also effective at establishing their personalities.)
Heathcliff: Quit running your mouths! We just need to crush them all!
Outis: What is that wretch miserably writhing on the ground? Are they to be the newest addition to the team?
...
Would Commander Clock suffice? In any case, we await your orders!
Ishmael: Haa... I knew it was a ridiculous idea to fight them.
OR
Hecate: ... Are you... the new "Chief?"
Hella: Let me out! Bastard! Let me kill him! I'll kill him!
Narration: The shadow at the young girl's feet shudders and wriggles forward. You soon hear the chilling cracking sound behind you. Hella's scream halts even before it escapes her mouth.
Hecate: Keep quiet... or it'll be your neck next time.
I feel like not enough people appreciate how the two main perceptions of the player are captured in these two characters. Hella and the rioters in the opening scene view you as foe, as an obstacle to freedom. Hecate and the other MBCC forces are fiercely loyal to you, willing to give up everything to keep you safe and actively defer to your authority.
Their reactions to your shackles are also night and day.
Hecate: Find your shackles and bind me. Follow your instincts. This is why you exist.
Hella: No! Stay away from me! No!!!
I love, love when I get to see a character visibly react to the situation I'm in- and me. It feels like a more engaging way of discovering the new environment.
Honourable mention goes to Star Rail. I don't know how to quickly access the opening cutscene so I didn't quote anything from it while writing this. I will say I loved the writers' decision to have the story open with Kafka and Silver Wolf. I expected it to open with the Trailblazer waking up for the first time but to play as Kafka and witness the scenes leading up to the typical "waking up with amnesia" moment was amazing. I didn't just learn about the TB's "parent", but also understand the significance of Stelle/Caelus as one piece of a bigger, more complicated puzzle.
(Kafka doing air-violin is also burned into my mind)
I need more games like these that do exposition and worldbuilding so well. I want that rush of finding a game with a world and characters that just gets me completely hooked in an instant.

2024.05.27 05:10 starting_to_learn Taylor Swift and the Confessional Poets Department: An Anti-Hero's Confessional Journey from Midnights to TTPD

Taylor Swift and the Confessional Poets Department: An Anti-Hero's Confessional Journey from Midnights to TTPD
Taylor Swift’s music has long been branded “confessional.” When people call Taylor’s work “confessional,” they might mean that her music is emotionally confessional. But when it comes to Taylor Swift, this belief that her music is emotionally confessional is closely tied to the belief that she is delivering an autobiographical accounting of her life through her lyrics. Her music is perceived as grounded in real events and real people, peppered with “clues” that, if followed, will lead you to the True Story she is telling.
Interesting to consider in light of TTPD, the term “confessional” as applied to art actually has its roots in poetry. The confessional poets were a small group in the late 1950s-1960s who changed the face of American poetry, shifting towards a much more personal, autobiographical style. They included Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, and most well-known today, Sylvia Plath - amongst others. The central breakthrough of their work was in “removing the mask” that had previously hidden the poet from view in their work. The confessional poets grounded their work in their own personal experiences and laid bare the most intimate details of their inner lives, delving into “taboo” subjects like mental illness and childhood trauma. This was seen as a major change for poetry to be so grounded in the poet’s interior life and personal history as the explicit subject. These poets became literary celebrities with much attention paid to the details of their personal lives - or in Plath’s case, her death.
After falling down a rabbit hole learning about the confessional poets, I believe that Taylor drew inspiration from this group on TTPD and crafted the album, at least in part, as a meditation on the concept of “confession.” I think her treatment of confession on TTPD is multi-layered - simultaneously pulling back the curtain towards a sincere unveiling of inner truth, while also, on a more meta level, examining what it means to create confessional art and, more broadly, what it means to confess. I’d argue that TTPD is all at once a personal act of confession, a performance of confession complete with a clue package so on-the-nose People Magazine only needed a day to crack it, and - if you’re keeping an ear out for those red herrings - a subversion of the expectations for confessional art. Which, as it turns out, is not so different from what the confessional poets themselves did.
After examining TTPD through this lens, I also revisited Midnights - and I hear the beginnings of this confessional journey stirring on that album, laying the groundwork for TTPD. Within the 321 “exile ends” countdown theory, this means that she began this confessional journey at 3 (Midnights) and ramped it up at 2 (TTPD). Where do we go from here? She just might be on the road to confessing her truth in swooping, sloping, cursive letters.
So, my fellow Gaylors, if you’d like to join me down this rabbit hole - I stand before you with a summary of long-ass dissertation on my findings!
Disclaimers:
  • I was inspired to do this research based on initial connections between TTPD and Sylvia Plath I've seen percolating (i.e., these posts), plus the Ted Hughes poem, Red, that Florence posted as "recommended by Taylor.”
  • I am not an expert on the confessional poetry movement. I learned a lot through my research for this post, and I'm sure I've still barely scratched the surface of this rabbit hole, so I'd welcome anyone with more expertise who can build on these connections!
  • My main goal in this post is to analyze Midnights and TTPD through this confessional lens. When drawing connections to the confessional poetry movement, I’m going to deal with the movement broadly and focus on how this work was collectively understood, perceived, and talked about - both by the literary establishment and by these poets themselves. Dealing in broad strokes means I’ll be missing nuance in the specifics of each poet, and it is not my intention to mischaracterize any of their work. It’s just the only way to keep the post manageable.

What is confessional poetry?

The term "confessional" was first used to describe Robert Lowell's Life Studies, which was considered a "tell-all" on his troubled youth and ongoing mental health struggles. In his review of Life Studies, M.L. Rosenthal defined confession as an act of “removing the mask.” He wrote, “[Lowell’s] speaker is unequivocally himself, and it is hard not to think of Life Studies as a series of personal confidences, rather shameful, that one is honor-bound not to reveal.” (Source)
Robert Lowell became the top literary celebrity of his time, and the confessional genre the most popular genre of poetry. Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton were Lowell’s students at Boston University and this group all drew inspiration from one another. While the trope of the tortured artist certainly predates this group, it’s notable that, for these poets, “tortured” was and is a central part of how the public understood their identities as artists. Interestingly, Lowell, Plath, and Sexton were all hospitalized (repeatedly) at the same psychiatric hospital, McLean Hospital in Massachusetts, and wrote about their experiences. Plath wrote of her experiences there in her famous novel The Bell Jar. One of Lowell’s most famous poems, Waking in the Blue, was written based on his experience at McLean. McLean was described as “America’s most literary hospital” in this article from The Atlantic titled "The Mad Poets Society."
There is a complicated legacy to the term “confessional” in art, beginning with these poets. Most of them absolutely hated the term. There was a sense that it reduced their art to a mere regurgitation of feelings without craft. There was a tendency to treat their work as very literal autobiography, to reduce it to a reporting of facts, though these poets themselves repeatedly said that, while their work was grounded in personal truths, it was not necessarily always literally factual. There came to be a mythos around these artists - not on the same scale as the Taylor Swift Cinematic Universe, but the parallels are there.
At the same time as artists resisted the word, the public is undoubtedly hungry for these personal confessions. Today, we need only look at Taylor Swift’s massive star power to see the draw of so-called confessional art.
Note before we move on: I’m going to use the word “confessional” throughout this post because, right or wrong, it’s the word that is commonly used to describe this type of art, and I also think Taylor is specifically playing with different meanings of the word. I don’t mean any disrespect towards the poets who didn’t like the term.

What Makes Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department Confessional Works

MIDNIGHTS: "Meet Me At Midnight"
A return to autobiographical writing was a central part of the sales pitch for Midnights. She wove this message into promotional appearances, for example the Jimmy Fallon interview where she describes Midnights as her “first directly autobiographical work in a while.” The album announcement branded Midnights “the story of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life.” She closes the announcement with “Meet me at midnight.” This return to direct, explicit autobiography, combined with the promise of personal revelations implied in “Meet me at midnight,” places us squarely within the confessional mode.
This messaging is especially interesting when we consider that Taylor’s previous work, with the exception of folklore/evermore, is widely considered to be a faithful autobiographical recounting of events from her life. Fans receiving this invitation to meet her at midnight might ask themselves: But haven’t we already met you? Haven’t you already revealed your innermost feelings and the private details of your life in your songwriting for years? The implication seems to be: no, you haven’t met me yet, but you will. The implication is that she is on the road to revealing herself in some new way that will invite us to truly meet her. This calls to mind the imagery of “removing the mask” from Rosenthal’s review of Life Studies, pulling back the veneer to reveal what is underneath. Pulling back the curtain, perhaps?

Importantly, it’s not just us, the public, who are implied to have not met Taylor. It’s also implied that she is estranged from herself: “For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching - hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve, we’ll meet ourselves.” Midnights represents her first step down the road towards meeting herself - and an invitation for us to join her.
While we did not meet her on Midnights, the songs on this album did begin to pull back the curtain. The entire concept of this album, exploring things that keep her up in the middle of the night, suggests a new kind of vulnerability. Taylor herself said of Anti-Hero: “I don’t think I’ve delved this far into my insecurities in this detail before…this song is a real guided tour through all the things I tend to hate about myself…I like Anti-Hero a lot because I think it’s really honest.” (Source) We also have Maroon and Hits Different - the two most obviously sapphic songs she’s released that she herself classified as “autobiography.” We have Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve, a searing exploration of lost girlhood.
Towards the end of the album and into the 3AM edition, she starts to explicitly grapple with the concept of confession. Interestingly, Taylor has not used the word “confess” that often in her discography. Midnights contains two mentions of the word, the most of any TS album at the time of release.
The first mention comes in Mastermind when she says: “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid / So I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since / To make them love me and make it seem effortless / This is the first time I’ve felt the need to confess.”
Mastermind closes the standard edition of Midnights on this note - that this is the first time she’s felt the need to confess, signaling a new type of revelation. In this context, she is playing with legal imagery. She’s been scheming like a criminal, and now she is confessing to the “crime” of masterminding her career to make everyone love her.
Then we transition into the 3AM edition, which contains even more themes of confession. We get our second use of the word on Paris, where she longs to confess her truth: “I want to transport you to somewhere the culture’s clever / Confess my truth in swooping, sloping cursive letters.”
Finally, the 3AM edition closes on Dear Reader. While she does not explicitly use the word “confess” here, she is very much operating in the confessional mode. The bridge, in particular, recontextualizes the entire album as an act of confession. She describes the songs on Midnights (“these nights” that she wanders through) as the “desperate prayers of a cursed man spilling out to you for free.” She is spilling confessions out to us on this album in the form of desperate prayers. And then she makes a further confession - “you wouldn’t take my word for it if you knew who was talking.” She begs her audience not to take her at her word, to instead hear her “desperate prayers” and see what she is “hiding in plain sight.” Dear Reader is arguably the most confessional song on the album - and it tees us up perfectly for TTPD, where she will take these confessions even further.
THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT
“Confession” is a word with several meanings. I believe that Taylor is exploring all these different meanings of the word on TTPD:
  • Most broadly, a personal intimate revelation
  • A religious sacrament: the confession of sins
  • A legal statement: confessing to a crime
It’s apt, then, that the term “confessional” was first applied to Lowell because he existed at the intersection of all definitions of the word. His struggles with mental illness were well-known in the literary community. He was a Catholic convert. And he was well-known for having served time as a conscientious objector to WWII. The other poets who came to be dubbed “confessional” tended to share some of these traits with him - a lengthy public struggle with mental illness, a preoccupation with religion, and/or brushes with the law. These subjects were explored in the confessional poets’ work.
I’m going to focus below mainly on how TTPD is exploring these different facets of confession. There are layers to the treatment of confession on this album. I would argue that TTPD is all at once a sincere act of confession; a performance of confession, targeted to the public; and a subversion of that performance in the form of “red herrings.”
She is so productive, it’s an art! Let’s dive in.
CONFESSION AS “REMOVING THE MASK”
The confessional poets pushed the boundaries of what you could say in a poem. Particularly at the time, the topics they were known for writing about were considered quite taboo and improper - and this was part of what made this “breakthrough” new and exciting. Consider this quote from Sylvia Plath, then an up-and-coming poet, and how she describes Lowell and Sexton’s work:
I've been very excited by what I feel is the new breakthrough that came with, say, Robert Lowell's Life Studies, this intense breakthrough into very serious, very personal, emotional experience which I feel has been partly taboo. Robert Lowell's poems about his experience in a mental hospital, for example, interested me very much. These peculiar, private and taboo subjects…I think particularly the poetess Anne Sexton, who writes about her experiences as a mother, as a mother who has had a nervous breakdown, is an extremely emotional and feeling young woman and her poems are wonderfully craftsmanlike poems and yet they have a kind of emotional and psychological depth which I think is something perhaps quite new, quite exciting. (Source)
On TTPD, Taylor is similarly pushing the boundaries of what you can say in a song - and she is certainly pushing the boundaries past what she has previously said in a song. She is delving deeper into the most intimate and painful elements of her interior life, evoking imagery and subject matters the confessional poets are known for with lyrics like:
  • “I was supposed to be sent away / but they forgot to come and get me / I was a functioning alcoholic / til nobody noticed my new aesthetic”
  • “If I can’t have him / I might just die, it would make no difference”
  • “Stitches undone / two graves, one gun”
  • “I want to snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me / you wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me”
  • “The hospital was a drag / worst sleep that I ever had”
In addition, Taylor delivers some of her most explicit lyrics on Guilty as Sin. We have unbridled rage in Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, even the way she calls out “the most judgmental creeps” on But Daddy I Love Him. We also have a healthy dose of homicidal ideation with lyrics like: “Your wife waters flowers, I wanna kill her” and “I did my best to lay to rest / all of the bodies that have ever been on my body / and in my mind, they sink into the swamp.” “Is that a bad thing to say in a song?” she asks. She says it anyway. The mask is off.

CONFESSION AS A RELIGIOUS SACRAMENT
Art as a Sacred Catharsis: “This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”
The word “confession” calls to mind the religious confessional, where one confesses their sins to be absolved of them. In the Catholic tradition, it’s only through confession that one can be free of their sins, achieve holiness, and re-establish communion with God. Sin constitutes a separation from God; confession allows for “wholeness.”
The above excerpt from Taylor’s post about TTPD evokes this religious imagery, where writing music is the act of confession. Our tears become holy when we shed them as ink on a page; when we confess our saddest story, we are free of it. TTPD is that act of confession - a sacred catharsis.
She spells this out on the album’s concluding track, The Manuscript, where she describes the catharsis of channeling agony into art. Once she’s confessed this story, she is free of it. It isn’t hers anymore.
https://preview.redd.it/ffv5cjn0pv2d1.png?width=1016&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d8389c1d504110b3e2a110555a86f49c25e57fb
In this religious context, TTPD as an act of confession implies the existence of a sin to be confessed. She explores this theme heavily on the album - what it means to be guilty as sin and what it means to be holy.
Love as Holiness: “What if the way you hold me is actually what’s holy?”
The true nature of holiness and sin is a major theme on TTPD - contrasting traditional notions of holiness and sin against how the author defines these words for herself. While this theme is absolutely rampant on TTPD, it’s not the first time a TS album has asked these questions. This theme blossomed on Lover before reaching new heights on TTPD.
On Lover, her love is positioned as sacred. She sings on Cornelia Street: “Sacred new beginnings that became my religion.” False God expands on this theme by drawing a contrast between this sacred love and the concept of a “false god” - an act of idolatry, a sin. She seems to say: even if they consider this love to be a sin, WE will still worship this love. We will still make this love our religion. “Confession” on False God is the act of making amends with her lover, re-establishing communion between them. “Got the wine for you” calls to mind the act of receiving holy communion, the body and blood of Christ - which, according to Catholic tradition, you are not allowed to receive when in a state of mortal sin. You must first receive the sacrament of confession before you can partake in communion. On False God, this love is her God - and they make confessions to break down the separation between them and achieve oneness.
This contrast from False God - between how others perceive her love as sinful, while she considers it her true religion - carries forward onto TTPD. On Guilty as Sin, she contrasts the “long-suffering propriety” they want from her with “the way you hold me” - and she insists this is actually what’s holy. She takes it a step further on But Daddy I Love Him. Here, she points an accusing finger back at those who would accuse her of sinfulness. She casts the Sarahs and Hannahs as the guilty ones - guilty of hatred, raising you to cage you, “vipers in empaths’ clothing.” They don’t need to pray for her because she is not the sinner. They are. This condemnation carries forward onto Cassandra, where she castigates the pure greed of the “Christian chorus line” who “never spared a prayer for [her] soul.” On The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, this man wears a “Jehovah’s Witness suit” - a predator peddling a false idea of holiness.
What began on Lover as honoring the holiness of her love transforms on TTPD into a castigation of those who would say it’s a sin. Lover is reverence; TTPD is a righteous fire of judgment sent to engulf a fallen world, a la the End Times.
https://preview.redd.it/zj1i5kefpv2d1.png?width=1170&format=png&auto=webp&s=78d67df8d85929f3f464bd3e8dfdcd329fe30c4a
So, we know what TTPD doesn’t consider to be her sin. The question remains - if she is confessing, then what is she confessing to? What sin is she seeking absolution for?
The Original Sin: “Forgive me, Peter.”
Peter is the only song on the album where we hear her ask for forgiveness: “Forgive me, Peter.” This evokes the words you would say in a confessional: “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.”
What is her sin? Leaving Peter behind - her “lost fearless leader in closets like cedar.” Preserved in the closet where she left him. She asks Peter to forgive her because she didn’t truly want to leave him there: “I didn’t want to come down / I thought it was just goodbye for now.” She believed that Peter would grow up and come find her, that they would be reunited - but it hasn’t happened.
The second and final time she asks Peter for forgiveness comes at the end of the song. She asks his forgiveness for turning out the light: “Forgive me, Peter / Please know that I tried to hold on to the days when you were mine / But the woman who waits by the window has turned out the light.” Here, turning out the light symbolizes giving up hope for Peter’s return.
Her sin, then, is two-fold: leaving Peter behind and then giving up hope that they could be reunited. And I’d argue that this is no ordinary sin - this separation from Peter is the original sin of the TTPD universe, akin to the original sin of Adam and Eve that separates mankind from God - the root of all suffering. On Peter, she compares herself to Adam, missing a rib: “The goddess of timing once found us beguiling / She said she was trying / Peter, was she lying? / My ribs get the feeling she did.” The implication is that Peter is the Eve to her Adam, carved out from her rib - and, in their separation, she feels the hollowness of this missing part of her. The Prophecy evokes this same Adam and Eve imagery: “I got cursed like Eve got bitten. Was it punishment?” This is a direct reference to the concept of original sin and the punishment that followed. The punishment is exile - being cast out of the garden. She can only return there in her mind (“secret gardens in my mind”).
This all gets very interesting and poignant if we posit that she is singing to a lost part of herself on Peter - that she is in exile from herself. (There have been a number of great analyses of this song through that lens; i.e., this one.) Her original sin of denying herself created this rift within her, which caused her suffering. She confesses in order to return to communion with herself. To become whole again. “Forgive me, Peter.”
This calls back to the Midnights foreword, the sense of estrangement from herself and the search to find herself: “For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching - hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve, we’ll meet ourselves.”
Importantly, in the Christian tradition, the crucifixion/resurrection was God’s answer to original sin, building a bridge for humanity to once again be one with God. So, these lyrics from Guilty as Sin are quite relevant here: “What if I roll the stone away? They’re gonna crucify me anyway.” The willingness to be crucified in the name of rolling the stone away - revealing this reborn version of herself - is the answer to original sin. Rolling the stone away is how she meets herself. And, in this context, rolling the stone away is, in essence, confession. It’s removing the mask, revealing what lies underneath. It’s exiting her tomb of silence.
Is TTPD the act of confession that will bring her back to herself and allow her to return to the garden? God, I hope so.
CONFESSION AS A LEGAL STATEMENT
I said earlier that while I think TTPD is a sincere piece of confessional art, I also think that it is intentionally crafted as a performance of confession. By this I mean - TTPD is crafted to give the people what they want and expect from confessional art, particularly Taylor Swift’s confessional art. And what do the people want? They want the scoop. The gory details of her personal life. They want her to name names and tell them exactly what went down. In other words, they want to trace the evidence.
The performance of confession on TTPD hinges on the evidence she feeds the audience and how she directs us to use it. To understand this performance, we have to explore how TTPD navigates the third definition of the word “confession.” It’s time to go to court.
The Hearing: “At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings.”
Since announcing TTPD, Taylor has been teasing the concept of this album as a hearing. She spoke of “entering into evidence.” She presented the artifacts. And now here she is, standing before the public, making a “plea of temporary insanity.”
https://preview.redd.it/v7fuuh2rqv2d1.png?width=532&format=png&auto=webp&s=90e3c98b43f02dfd592c21f6fa664fdcb443d689
This imagery introduces yet another layer to the concept of this album as “confessional.” Here, we are in a courtroom, and she is confessing to a crime. She is presenting us with the evidence to support her plea.
I think there are two layers to the courtroom imagery. The first is the defendant herself trying to make sense of the losses she has sustained, sorting through the evidence. Hits Different off Midnights introduces this language: “I trace the evidence, make it make some sense why the wound is still bleeding.” This language continues onto TTPD - i.e., in So Long London, she asks, “You swore that you loved me, but where was the proof?” This is in line with how Taylor has spoken about using music to make sense of her life.
But the second layer is that this isn’t just Taylor trying to make sense of things on her own. She is confessing directly to an audience - her fellow members of the tortured poets department, the public. She is again breaking the fourth wall, like on Dear Reader.
Importantly, this courtroom imagery bookends the listener’s experience of the album. It served as the audience’s first introduction to the album at the start of the promotional cycle. And she closes the album with this imagery via the epilogue poem. The whole album is framed as a court hearing.
This is fascinating within the context of the Taylor-verse because this framing directly parallels the way the public engages with her music. Her lyrics are treated as a factual, autobiographical accounting of her life (particularly her love life), which the public scours for evidence in an investigative mission to uncover the True Story she is telling vis-a-vis what we know of her personal life. And her music is, in fact, often reduced to an investigation into her love life. To most media outlets and fans, analysis of a Taylor Swift song seems to mean examining which man the song is about. The lyrics serve as evidence, rather than art.
So, when Taylor tells her audience that she is entering something into evidence, we are primed; we know what to do. Time to pull out the magnifying glass and every pap photo of Taylor taken in the last two years. It’s interesting, isn’t it, that she gave us so much “evidence” to work with over the course of the last year? So many public sightings of her to expertly match up with the lyrics on TTPD. Not to mention the Eras Tour as an opportunity for non-stop Easter egging. She presented her information-hungry audience with a veritable buffet of evidence to pick through and match up with the album.
And the album itself is chock-full of “clues” linking lyrics back to real-life figures in the TSCU. She already knows that her audience will follow those clues; it’s what happens every album cycle. But this time she doesn’t just lay the bait and wait for everyone to take it. She lays the bait and tells us to take it. She says that she is entering this evidence for us to review. She stands before us with a summary of her findings. She directs us to conduct the post-mortem.
When was the last time she so brazenly invited speculation? I’d argue that this brings us right back to the beginning of her career, hiding secret messages in the liner notes and directing her audience to decode the messages to find out who or what the song was about. She said she wanted people to read her lyrics. But the end result was that people read her lyrics without really reading them. Her lyrics that she was so proud of were not treated as art. They were reduced to clues, evidence linking the song to this man or that. And we need only read the Reputation prologue to know how she came to feel about that:
https://preview.redd.it/0opkr8marv2d1.png?width=394&format=png&auto=webp&s=4fc76f89e5394b97875169984579eafa2c5bc958
So, it begs the question - Why is she directing her audience to follow the trail of evidence she laid out? Why evoke the language of the courtroom if she doesn’t want her music to be paternity tested in the court of public opinion? Why enact this performance of confession that seems to play directly into the public’s worst impulses?
Well, you know what they say: if it feels like a trap, you’re already in one.
Red Herrings: “And so I enter into evidence my tarnished coat of arms; my muses, acquired like bruises…”
Along with teasing the concept of TTPD as a court hearing from the very beginning, Taylor also introduced the suggestion of “red herrings” the same day she announced the album. This is no coincidence. A “red herring” is both a literary device AND a rhetorical device used in legal settings to distract or divert attention away from the main issues of the case. (Source) So, red herrings are a perfect fit for an album that centers on confession, playing in sandboxes both literary and legal.
https://preview.redd.it/lvabm4tqrv2d1.png?width=444&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2a7e65afb36575e2525cc726445c9a1e33b91dc
If you’re in this corner of the internet, you likely believe that Taylor has been using red herrings in her work for quite some time as a tool to obscure and distract from her real-life muses. Naming a song “Style” is a perfect example of how she might very overtly hint at a public-facing muse in order to distract from the true inspiration. But, importantly, no matter how obvious we think these past red herrings were, TTPD marks a first: the first time she has explicitly pointed to red herrings in an album as part of the promotional cycle. The Rep prologue took us halfway there with the assertion that everyone who tried to paternity test the songs would be wrong. But now she’s saying: I am entering this evidence for you to review, but the evidence itself contains red herrings. I am planting evidence that is going to lead you to the wrong conclusion. Again: If it feels like a trap, you’re already in one.
Why do this? Why intentionally misdirect and then TELL us that’s what she’s doing? I can only assume that she wants us to see it. If she directs her audience to trace the evidence and tells us there are red herrings - well, then we will look for the red herrings. Or at least some of us will. And if we look closely enough, we’ll find them.
thanK you aIMee is a perfect example. There are three layers here: First, we have the subject of the song identified as Aimee. Then we have an old-school Taylor “hidden clue” in the title of the song - capitalizing letters to spell out Kim. Everyone sees that very obvious “clue” and pats themselves on the back for “solving the case”: the song is about Kim Kardashian. But then we have this line in the song: “I changed your name and any real defining clues / and one day, your kid comes home singin’ / a song that only us two is gonna know is about you.” Seems a bit contradictory, huh? She says she changed any real defining clues, but surely capitalizing letters in the song title to spell out someone’s name is a pretty defining clue. I smell a red herring. It could be that the capitalized letters are a red herring. It could be that the line in the song about not leaving any defining clues is a cheeky misdirection meant to cast doubt on the “clue” she left. I’d argue it’s probably both. Either way, the obvious contradiction built into this particular song serves to cast doubt on the history of Easter egging song subjects in the TSCU. This song takes us right back to the early days of Easter egging, capitalizing letters in lyric books to spell out secret messages. If this is a misdirection, who's to say there weren't misdirections built into the Easter eggs from the beginning?
The Alchemy is another example. This song falls near the end of the album, the final “muse-coded” song of the standard edition of TTPD. And if you’ve been tracing the evidence through the songs up until now, you’ll find matching “clues” in this song that seem to point at Matty Healy: themes of returning to a lost love, drug references in “heroin but this time with an E.” But wait - now she’s using a bunch of football references? There’s beer sticking to the floor while your friends lift you up over their heads because you just won the big game? The football imagery is so heavy-handed that it took very little time for every entertainment media outlet in creation to post a carousel of TayloTravis images along with lyrics to the song. But if you can keep yourself from getting distracted by the “Tayvis” fanfare, you might ask yourself - what the heck is going on in this song? Is it about Matty or Travis? Is it about both of them? The inherent contradictions point to another red herring, “clues” planted to mislead. And, well, if there are misdirections about the identities of her romantic muses built into this song…then who’s to say there aren’t misdirections built into the others? Who’s to say that anything you think you “know” about the identities of her muses is true, even if she’s the one who planted the evidence? Who’s to say that she is telling you the truth?
This line of questioning cracks open the entire foundation of muse-driven Easter egging in the TSCU. Following the trail of evidence to the red herrings she planted about muse identities will lead you to question the entire enterprise of following the evidence in the first place. And I think that’s precisely the point. You’re in a trap, and she wants you to know it. Because this practice of attaching public-facing male muses to all of her work has Taylor in a trap, too. As she says in Mastermind, she’s spent her whole career “scheming like a criminal to make them love [her] and make it seem effortless.” This is the first time she’s felt the need to confess. She’s copping to the scheming, pointing us to the red herrings. She’s asking us to accept her plea of temporary insanity on account of her restricted humanity. Asking that we understand the plight of the caged beast, driven to do the most curious things.
And if we’re going to understand, then we must understand this: we’re all in a trap. If her fans are going to embrace her rolling the stone away, they have to first see that tomb of silence for what it was: a trap ensnaring us all, limiting her artistic expression, and preventing her audience from hearing the core truth in her music.
https://preview.redd.it/exlv6veusv2d1.png?width=518&format=png&auto=webp&s=660f3e680f1a8403a6406205f9e346e19c63abd1

Confessional Art: How much is confession? How much is art?

So, we’ve established these core precepts of the TTPD Universe: TTPD is a sincerely confessional album, representing a continuation of our anti-hero’s journey towards “meet me at midnight.” At the same time, TTPD is not necessarily based in literal, factual truths - and Dr. Swift has confessed that to us, too.
Is that a contradiction? Do the red herrings she planted exist in opposition to confessional art? I would argue, no, they do not.
The public’s foundational understanding of confessional art is that it is faithfully, literally autobiographical. It tells us the factual truth about the author. But just how true is that? For the confessional poets, when it came to truth in art, facts were besides the point. Consider this quote from Robert Lowell about his artistic process (emphasis mine):
“They're not always factually true. There's a good deal of tinkering with fact. You leave out a lot, and emphasize this and not that. Your actual experience is a complete flux. I've invented facts and changed things, and the whole balance of the poem was something invented. So there's a lot of artistry, I hope, in the poems. Yet there's this thing: if a poem is autobiographical—and this is true of any kind of autobiographical writing and of historical writing, you want the reader to say, “This is true.” In something like Macaulay's History of England, you think you're really getting William III. That's as good as a good plot in a novel. And so there was always that standard of truth which you wouldn't ordinarily have in poetry—the reader was to believe he was getting the real Robert Lowell.” (Source)
Here, Lowell seems to say that a core part of his artistic mission was to write poetry that would be experienced as true. He crafted his poems to deliver the experience and impression of the “real Robert Lowell.” And this is separate and distinct from delivering factual truth. In fact, he “tinkered with fact” as part of this artistic choice - to create a poem that would be experienced as true, even if it technically was not in the strictest sense of the term.
Anne Sexton made similar comments about her poems - that she did not always adhere to literal facts. In one interview, she described these untruths as “little escape hatches” so she would “always have an out.” She goes on to say: “I can tell more truth than I have to admit to because I can tell the truth and say, after all, ‘This was a lie’ or ‘Of course not all of my poems are true.’” These escape hatches, then, opened up room for her to tell more truth. Perhaps not always the literal kind, but the sincere core truth that audiences recognize and respond to as “true.”
The use of “red herrings,” then, is not in opposition to the confessional mode. Red herrings can actually enhance confessional art when changing factual details allows room for the author to share pieces of themselves that they otherwise would not. And, further, the experience of truth for the audience does not hinge on strict adherence to literal facts. The audience needs to feel that they are getting the real Robert Lowell. The real Taylor Swift.
Maybe we haven't met the real Taylor Swift yet. But I think TTPD brought us several steps closer.

2024.05.27 03:39 Stardust-Sparkles (Nearly) All Momocon 2024 Panel Info

Hello as once again the sane TADC fan, I decided to go and compile the info/little fun bits shown during the talk! Featuring Lizzie Freeman, Alex Rochon and Gooseworx!
(Credit to kqiwi for giving some time stamps for this info!)
Please feel free to correct me or tell me any new info I forgot to add! I didn't include some parts though that I felt were too unrelated to TADC. I was working on this in the late hours of 1am-3am as well I need sleep
Goose comments getting 300 million views is ‘a little more than I was expecting’, she was hoping for 3/4ths of the views of the murder drones pilot but when it kept going she went ‘oh no’.
According to Alex, the past seven months have been ‘inexplicable’. The pilot hit 15 million views the day he and his partner went to Calafornia, the next day he met Lizzie, the next day he proposed to his fiance. The views kept going and going and wouldn't stop. He describes the whole thing as a life changing experience for him, and that it must have been for Goose and Lizzie too, calling it a wonderful story.
Goose likes Alex's little Spamton voice.
Lizzie describes her feeling of this whole show and character as the Plankton meme going "I don't know I didn't think I'd get this far', saying it's an incredible experience
Goose guesses it blew up due to the characters and it was easy for people to find due to it being free.
Alex thinks it's very different and earnest, you've never seen characters like this with its colourful but existential nature. "It's just good, it's funny!"
The idea for digital circus came from when Glitch approached Goose and said "give us a show". She heard it had to be 3D, and enjoyed late '90s and early 2000s 3D, pre-rendered nonsense with surrealness. The title was thought of before literally anything else, thinking there was something with this title. She doodled until she came up with characters she liked, thinking od their stories and arcs, as well as themes. "We've got a show, we've got something."
There were two other pitches, but Goose refused to speak about them.
Lizzie got her audition, sent it and "forgot about it".
Alex remembers the call sheet had concept art for the characters, Caine's gums were originally a different colour and Kinger had a sucker(?). Goose "found out he didn't need it". He assumes it was early pre production when they got the auditions.
The most anxiety inducing weeks of Alex's life was wondering if he failed the audition "was someone better at being me than me!?"
Five episodes have been completely recorded
The estimated length is nine episodes, too much was happening in one episode so they split it into two
The show goes "places" it gets dark, they have an idea of where they want to go with the show, being teen-young adult
They aren't in danger of being demonitized (yet)
Goose names character in a very weird way - using syllables and putting them together, then checking if it's not a slur or anything bad (Pomni meaning remember was an accident, Goose saw this and liked it)
If Goose ended up in the digital circus, she said she would be Jax (a Jax adjacent character and become a huge asshole). She thinks most people would abstract, cause most people think "ooh it's a funny show" but when you're actually in there you realise it's hell
Lizzie would be a toy cat of some kind. She'd abstract pretty quick.
I couldn't make out what Alex answered for his specific person, sorry. He feels his sanity is not all there anyway so he'd end up in a Kinger situation, just rolling with it and messing around but not to a Jax extent.
Lizzie thought she would get Gangle instead of Pomni. It was down to her and the current voice actor for the role.
Goose does not want to voice anybody, except the people that she voices.
Alex would want to be Kinger if he wasn't Caine. (I think?)
*cue funny interval with Caine not being able to leave when the moon gets frisky*
Goose loves every Gumigoo meme "Oh that's so sad poor Gummigoo, well I'm the one that did it though."
Lizzie loves the "CAINE ARE WE ROBBING A BANK!?" meme, Alex seems to love it too
He also likes the Gumigoo dying memes
There are some guest stars in the show, might not be anybody people know, eg niche youtubers. Goose doesn't want to spoil who, as there's a really funny joke in episode 5
Hypothetically, Goose would pick David Lynch to guest star and say one word, "metadash" or "perish"
Alex would pick Goose
Lizzie wishes they could get Robbie Williams
A typical day in the recording is Lizzie recording from home, or driving to the studio and seeing the director and audio engineer, as well as calling Goose, who breaks down each moment in the script. Lizzie prefers to go into the studio to be able to breathe
Alex records in his closet with a lot of sweat
Lizzie "struggles with words all the time"
The line that gave Alex the most struggle was "welp, I'm gonna go drink water!" due to the tone, cause he needed to say it in the exact way otherwise it wouldn't be funny. It's funny cause "I'm gonna do this thing" after something horrific, which isn't even cool or special
Goose wants to get water to 300 million views
Goose didn't have any involvement with the different language dubbing, but has watched them, she doesn't speak the language but thinks "it's probably good". The languages might also be why it got a lot of views
She thinks she came in at the perfect time, Glitch went "do whatever you want we can handle it"
*I'm skipping two of the more person/personal questions cause I don't think they're that relevant to the show, might add the answers here tomorrow*
Kevin Tenmer shows up as well lol, he did so much legwork in developing the show according to Goose "He has to listen to our voices over and over and over and over"
There were tons of inspirations for the character, Raggidy Andy (I'm so sorry if I butchered the name) was one of course, one of Goose's fav movies. She doesn't know if it's good but it's weird, and she likes weird things. There's a bunch of references to it.
Popee the Performer basically made Jax
Gangle was based off the masks concept
Alex's favourite lines to say as Caine were "What do you think of XDDCC" and "Oh Bubble, you always know how to make me say this exact sentence", he will not say "you parasite" due to him saying it a ton of times to people at the con
The show is "about people at the end of the day", how people stuck in a terrible situation deal with it, and how they cope with the shitty life
Lizzie's favourite line to say as Pomni is the whole scene of her talking to Gummigoo and "I'm not a child, you don't have to hype me up". And "eh"
Goose's favourite part of writing is character moments (e.g. Pomni and Gummigoo out of the map). She wasn't able to put it in the pilot so was excited to release the second episode for this.
Alex feels Caine doesn't hate people, and is curious, entertaining people as to what he sees as entertainment, in compared to the guy from IHNMAIMS (I'm not sure who he is). Goose also agrees they're pretty different
*I got confused on the next question, something about enjoying the CEOs and how there wasn't a young audience boundary, though I'm not sure who they meant by that, probably Kevin but I can't say for sure*
Goose likes cartoon slapstick and throws it in whenever she can. Whenever a character can be subjected to a whacky cartoon troupe, she takes it
Goose's fav character is of course, Jax, she has a taste in cartoon men
Alex's fav is Kinger
Lizzie's fav aside from Pomni is Ragatha
Everyone has really enjoyed the panel and con. Alex would call it his favourite, where the other two think it's the best con they've ever been to
"The trees are different from the ones in Washington they're cool I like cool trees" - Goose
BUBBLE COSPLAY!!1! Everyone was impressed
If TADC characters met Undertale/Deltarune characters, Jax would get along with Flowey
Kinger might get along with Sans due to their similarity of having more to themselves than meets the eye
Ragatha and Toriel might
Ragatha and Ralsei also
Happy Gangle would possibly get along with Papyrus
Kinger and Papyrus would due to them both being very young minded and naive
Zooble and Undyne they also explored
Goose is not sure if Caine and Spamton would get along
A bad thing to do with voice acting is focusing too much on making an interesting voice than thinking about the character itself, according to Lizzie, you should love the craft and get involved, Alex agrees, and Goose agrees as the voice of Bubble.
Some music is written after the animation but some e.g. the music driven moments, the music is written before, or the music's theme is decided beforehand, it really depends
The music was written first for the final scene in the pilot, and where Pomni and Gummigoo are flying out of the "dead room" (bottom of the map)
There's a musical moment in every episode
One of Goose's direct music inspirations is film soundtracks, listening to those instead of normal music. With video game soundtracks, anime music
Alex likes Twin Geeks (is that the show?)
Goose likes Cowboy Beepbop (and something else I couldn't hear)
Lizzie doesn't have a singular favourite show but is a 90s cartoon fan, liking Spongebob
The moderator likes Nana - The Anime (is that the name? Never heard of it)
Currently there are no plans to expand on the universe past the one season, though it is not impossible
If TADC was a video game, it would be a super unfair party game like Mario Party 1, which causes chaos, breaks friendships and burns your hand palm (sign me up!)
The famous frog Pomni was more of an audience surrogate character, not really Pomni, she drew the jester and realised she liked this jester
Kaufmo was going to be more of a character but after Ragatha was made she realised they were a little too similar.
And Jax made her realise the show does not have room for the extra character and nearly scrapped him, but thought "wait we can use him to explore vital parts of the world", and then they did. Goose said rest in peace.
Lizzie wants to see Pomni become free "FREE HER!!!"
She also wants to see Jax gets what deserves, Goose comments he gets a lot of that
Alex wants to see Caine's vulnerable moment, there's a lot of those too
Alex: "I want to see Gangle go beserk" Goose: "Gangle definitely goes something, stay tuned for episode 4" maybe episode 4 is the Gangle episode
Alex only knows Warner Brothers can bite him
Goose has not watched something, Lizzie wants to watch it
*I did not hear what is was, please someone fill me in*
The cast would behave very differently in any other show
In any other show, Caine would not fit in, at all
Pomni in a magic girl anime would be Usagi from Sailor Moon, crying the whole time
Alex wants to see Caine in The Mask
Alex wants to go with the flow and isn't much of a theory person as he ends up getting too disappointed with things (game of thrones)
Lizzie agrees with Alex, she wants people to discover the lore and moments of the amazing digital circus and not take her words as fact
Everything is set in stone, even if people perfectly predict it, Goose is sticking to her guns
Questioner: "Did Gangle always have her happy mask?" Goose: "I should probably know this." Gangle would have to be a different person for the sad mask to break
Goose has full faith in Glitch, they have not steered her wrong (yet /jokey)
Goose does the Bubble voice by doing a whole different headspace
Writing a ton of music for each episode is difficult
Alex is still figuring his job out (jokey)

2024.05.27 03:37 Stardust-Sparkles (Nearly) All Monocon 2024 Panel Info

2024.05.27 03:27 budgetmarziapan Handwriting for Exams

Hello,
Just wondering how neat handwriting should be for exams? I just did a practice exam for Global Environment where I have to write essentially 3 pages of stuff in 70 minutes. It's doable and I went fine with the time, however I was writing quite fast. I write in cursive, and it is readable (in my opinion), but maybe not the neatest. Will this be a major issue for the exam? I'm hoping the people marking exams generally know how to read cursive. I think my writing probably isn't too different to how it was in year twelve, and I went fine writing essays quickly then, so should it be ok maybe? Thanks in advance for any help.
Also, and Global Environment people (current or past) reading this, how do you do good diagrams! I am stressed, mine all look like little scribbls.

2024.05.27 01:05 -PepeArown- Revamping Nether Fortresses for an End Update

Revamping Nether Fortresses for an End Update
No, my title is not a typo. I believe that, not only do strongholds: the main way you go to the End need to be updated, but also Nether fortresses, as they’re how you obtain blaze powder for eyes of Ender.
This post will tie into my stronghold revamp post, so I’d suggest reading that if you haven’t already:
https://www.reddit.com/minecraftsuggestions/comments/1cnei5m/revamping_strongholds_for_an_end_update/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
With Mojang’s current annual update speed, I honestly think it may be better for them to create “two” End updates: one that fixes the “pre End”, mainly through fixing “castles” (strongholds and fortresses) as well as adding a few other new additions to the Nether, which I’ll detail in my Nether archaeology post, and one that actually fixes the End dimension, which I’ll do more write ups on. (So far, I’ve already done a write up on my concept for a “melodic forest” biome.)
https://www.reddit.com/minecraftsuggestions/comments/1ct1w47/the_melodic_forest_concept_for_an_end_biome/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I have some very basic concept art to share for this post, most of which is admittedly basic retextures or hue shifts of current items.
Anyways, my plan is to turn the Nether fortresses into a Nether version of trial chambers, only slightly easier to make up for how they’re mandatory for game progression. The structures will still be given the same name, but go through several major changes to be more current, while still keeping major features like blazes, wither skeletons, and Nether wart intact.
So, I want to go over some new building blocks that these renovated fortresses could be made out of, or that you could use yourself for new Nether themed builds.
Polished Netherrack
Can be crafted by putting a 2x2 of netherrack in a crafting table. Basically, just smooth netherrack in a grid.
Can then be smelted into smooth polished netherrack, giving it a dark purplish red color akin to Nether brick, still with the smooth grid texture.
Both blocks can be made into slabs, stairs, and walls.
Nether Brick Fence Gate
No reason this shouldn’t be in the game already. Would simply be added for parity with all the other fence types.
Red Nether Brick Fences and Fence Gates
Similar story to Nether brick fence gates, but with red Nether brick.
Cracked and Chiseled Red Nether Bricks
Do I need to explain this one?
Blue Nether Bricks
Ideally, I think red Nether bricks should be renamed to crimson Nether bricks, and these should be called warped Nether bricks, but I’ll just go for calling them red and blue.
They’d be crafted like this with a new item called warped wart, which I’ll go into later when I get into loot.
https://preview.redd.it/0vl9g0alku2d1.png?width=484&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5e9e6b423a81e3277663755a85549cdaba156ff
Here’s some concept textures from u/Mystjc101 that show off how normal, red, and blue Nether bricks could look. Although, I still do think fences and fence gates should be added along with them, as well as my proposition for smooth polished Netherrack. Also, this technically isn’t the original picture, as I edited the blue Nether bricks to look tealer.
https://preview.redd.it/vv2t4kzoku2d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=c102690c13dded863dfe5cda492c2ba535233428
And, one other variant, actually…
Weeping Red and Twisting Blue Nether Bricks
Essentially, mossy Nether bricks for the red and blue variant.
They’d be crafted with the corresponding brick’s vine, like such:
Not sure how to make a block model yet, so text is the best I can do for now.
Using weeping red Nether bricks as an example, you could then make:
-Weeping red Nether brick slabs
-Weeping red Nether brick stairs
-Weeping red Nether brick walls
-Weeping red Nether brick fences
-Weeping red Nether brick fence gates
Likewise, just replace “weeping red” with “twisting blue” for the blue variants.
Having the moss/vines match the color of the bricks is intentional. Having, say weeping moss over blue Nether bricks would clog the game with too many blocks that I think would be too niche in the long run, especially when I want things like fences to get variants.
Crimson and Warped Caps
A rename for the Nether wart and warped wart blocks we already have. They’d be renamed to caps, because they’re part of the caps of Nether fungi. Functionality would remain the same.
Crimson and Warped Wart Blocks
These’d be textured differently from the caps to look more “pebbly”, I guess, to signify the individual warts making up the block. Both can be crafted with 9 of their corresponding warts, still.
Since they would no longer make up the caps of giant Nether fungi, they can be crafted back into 9 warts.
Nether Flower and Decorated Pots
I’ve seen a lot of people ask for colored pots, so this seems like the next best option. Clay and netherrack are the only items you need to first smelt into brick items before making individual brick blocks, so Mojang should embrace that and let us make pottery with both of them, giving us 2 pot colors.
The recipes would be as you’d expect.
https://preview.redd.it/v8r9rv87lu2d1.png?width=484&format=png&auto=webp&s=4059ec9994f232c68e209445ea4fe1c0d4cabd88
https://preview.redd.it/4xiv87b9lu2d1.png?width=484&format=png&auto=webp&s=e19a2613097861ea147e87f4134a5583c3fa7543
Nether decorated pots would be able to carry a stack of any one item, just like their Overworld counterparts. In my Nether archaeology post, I’ll go more in depth with my idea of Nether pottery sherds.
Withered Bone Block
Can be crafted with one bone block, and two coal, like this:
https://preview.redd.it/lgvatd7hlu2d1.png?width=484&format=png&auto=webp&s=d8771f0997bb9470ec332387737036d9dc87ba25
Can’t be crafted back into anything, since it’s made with two things. Wouldn’t have much use beyond being a black pillar block to go with Nether builds. Although, they will surround the base of Wither skeleton trial spawners.
More Magma Blocks
I don’t see these fitting into my fortress rework, but they’d be neat to have for players.
I’ll just list them off, because their recipes should be self-explanatory.
-Magma block stair
-Magma block slab
-Magma block wall
-Magma bricks
-Magma brick stair
-Magma brick slab
-Magma brick wall
-Chiseled magma brick (could maybe use a magma cube head in the middle)
Yes, these’d all still hurt you without the normal protections, and all full block variants would generate downward bubble columns.
General Structural Changes to Nether Fortresses
As I mentioned before, I want Nether fortresses to have trial spawners and vaults worked into them, But I've decided to keep the structure’s name the same to reference their castle-like build.
There’d still be both indoor and outdoor sections of the fortresses to explore, but perhaps with more unique rooms.
Also, you’ll now find two variants of fortresses: crimson fortresses made primarily of red Nether bricks, and warped fortresses made primarily of blue Nether bricks. Crimson fortresses can be found in Nether wastes and crimson forests, and warped fortresses can be found in soul sand valleys and warped forests. You could find neither in basalt deltas. Standard Nether brick would be used in these structures as an accent much like copper is used to accent tuff in trial chambers, mainly being used as a floor and ceiling material.
Mobs
According to the Wiki, 10 unique mobs spawn in trial chambers via trial spawners, or 11 if you count baby zombies. Other mobs also don’t spawn around trial chambers, regardless of light level, so I think fortresses should be treated the same.
Now, this does not mean a nearby ghast can’t attack you, but at least extra mobs won’t spawn inside the structure, unless they come from spawners.
So, here are my ideas for what could come out of trial spawners in fortresses: as well as a picture showing off what each of their spawner bases would look like. (Using Nether wart blocks as a replacement for chiseled red Nether bricks, bones with coal over them to represent my idea for Withered bones, and gray concrete to represent ash, a new block I’ll detail in my Nether archaeology post.)
Trial spawners are depicted as just the normal ones, since I didn’t feel like switching over to snapshots just for one picture.
https://preview.redd.it/6j14pgo9mu2d1.png?width=1308&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca2aba94d3f15eaeb15c2837114add8dc0ec43bf
Shnats
Yes, that last mob on the list is my own idea. Their name is meant to be a fusion of “ash gnat”. Here’s some rough concept art for what I imagine them looking like, beig roughly the size of chickens:
Would take on the shape of a square, unlike bees' more rectangular body
I’m only going to go over their attack methods here, because, in my Nether archaeology post, I want to detail the other main place (a new Nether biome) you can find them in, as well as their uses.
A shnat would fly about, much like a bee or ghast. When they spot you, they’ll chase you until they crash into you, or a wall, at which point, they’ll kamikaze into a plume of ash. (Kind of like how squid will ink you when attacked.) So, they’re kind of like creepers, but, instead of griefing nearby blocks, shnats will simply explode into an obtrusive particle effect. If they die by kamikaze, like creepers, they won’t drop anything, but they will of course do a bit of damage.
If you outrun a shnat while it’s chasing you, it’ll lose interest and go back to default, no longer homing in to kill itself.
Yes, gnats are arthropods, so shnats will be affected by bane of arthropods.
In fortresses, in order to get loot from shnat spawners, you have to kill all schnats normally, not letting any of them kamikaze. If any of them die by kamikaze, the trial spawner will spawn in a backup shnat until you can kill it properly.
Blaze and Wither Skeleton Rooms
At least one of these will spawn with every fortress, coming with one blaze or Wither skeleton spawner, as well as murals for the corresponding mobs.
Because trial spawners can only spawn in so many mobs at once, these rooms would contain normal, infinite mob spawners. That way, anyone that wants to make traditional farms for these two to grind on rods or skulls can do so.
Nether Decorated Pots
Can be occasionally found in some rooms in fortresses, regardless of the variant. Their faces will come with several sherds unique to fortresses.
-Inferno (depicts a blaze)
-Bushel (depicts a bundle of Nether wart)
-Boss (depicts the Wither)
As well as a Nether sherd equivalent of the burn (fire) sherd. In my Nether archaeology post, I’ll explain how both pot types will have unique sherds, but share sherds like the fire, heart, and potion sherds.
This’d also be a good way for them to add a new music disc (probably by Lena) that you’d need to break a pot to get.
Gardens
Relatively small indoor gardens/farms. Again, at least one would come in every fortress. Crimson fortress gardens would come with large crimson fungi and empty soul sand patches, and warped fortress gardens would come with large warped fungi and empty soul sand patches.
I should mention that I don’t want trial keys to be compatible with both chambers and fortresses. Otherwise, you could just go to a trial chamber to open fortress vaults, or vice versa.
Instead, here’s a quick mockup of fortress keys: normal and ominous. I recolored them to look like the main materials used in fortresses, like how trial keys look like they're made out of tuff and copper.
https://preview.redd.it/wtxppjxknu2d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=1aae896ebaba0e934f74d4b4d5ce0aca052a0bca
Gardens would come with one standard vault, which will always have a chance of giving you crimson or warped wart, depending on the fortress variant. The empty soul sand patches could then be where you try to grow Nether wart. I think soul torches or lanterns should spawn in the gardens, and a new feature should be added where Nether wart grows faster if next to a soul light source, maybe once every four blocks like with Overworld crops and water.
Also, Mojang should get rid of the chance of finding Nether wart in bastions to make fortresses a bit more unique.
Warped Wart
As already mentioned, can be found from opening vaults in gardens in warped fortresses.
https://preview.redd.it/48ubvtlvnu2d1.png?width=160&format=png&auto=webp&s=dd6b6b855666b2b217ccc35b5ff6e0b62c14a60b
Can be used to craft warped wart blocks or blue Nether bricks, but its main use would be to brew up a pugnacious potion.
A pugnacious potion acts like an awkward potion, but, instead of having a consistent status effect, any entity affected with an effect brewed with a pugnacious potion will do something upon death, or when hit.
1.21 is adding four of these already: weaving, wind charging, oozing, and infested. With pugnacious potions, you’d now need to brew up these four potions with a pugnacious potion, not an awkward potion.
To compensate, however, I say more “pugnacious effects” should be added.
Ominous Fortress Trials, and Pugnacious Effects
These’d work pretty similarly to ominous chamber trials. Zombified piglins, skeletons, and Wither skeletons will all get a chance of spawning with upgraded gear with trims (including some new ones) that you could find in fortresses, and random lingering potions will be thrown from spawners.
That includes some new ones that you can make yourself:
Fire Charged
Can be brewed with a blaze rod. When used, any mob with the effect that’s killed will produce a pile of fire in the nearby vicinity after they die.
Molten
Can be brewed with a chiseled magma brick. When used, any mob killed with the effect will spawn two medium magma cubes. Great for gathering froglights in the Overworld
And, some extra effects that wouldn’t spawn during fortress ominous trials, but may have interesting implications.
Blossoming
Can be brewed with a spore blossom. Upon death, a mob with this effect will produce a trailing particle effect that reaches to the ceiling directly above them, planting a spore blossom there. If the trail can't reach a ceiling (Ex: only the sky is above you), it'll drop the blossom on the ground as an item.
Like how weaving is the only way to reproduce cobwebs, this seems like an inteeresting option to renew spore blossoms.
Catalyzing
Can be brewed with a sculk catalyst. Any mob killed with the effect will drop no XP, instead leaving behind a pile of sculk, regardless of if there’s a catalyst nearby.
Other Loot Ideas
So, of course, fortresses would come with some of the “standard” unique loot:
-A new trim or two (one based off the blaze for sure, like how there’s going to be a breeze trim)
-1-3 new discs
-A new banner pattern or two (ones that depicts a flame, and another depicting a blaze)
-The warts that I already went over
But, I think more needs to be added than that, obviously. So, I’ll briefly go over some possible ideas.
Netherite Horse Armor
I'd love to credit the original maker of this sprite, but they deleted their Reddit account.
The “lazy” but obvious add to fortresses, and that should remain an exclusive drop to help them stick out from bastions. Maybe they’d be an ominous exclusive drop.
But, beyond that, why not rework horse armor entirely? Such as by:
-Giving it durability, making it work more like wolf or standard armor.
-Giving it the ability to be trimmed (using the same trim items for player armor)
-Giving you the ability to enchant it
I found that u/butdamnthisisbetter did a pretty great writeup of how horse armor enchantments should work, so I’m not even going to try to come up with better ideas when I agree with almost everything they’re saying:
https://www.reddit.com/minecraftsuggestions/comments/1cvr6xb/enchantable_horse_armo?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Only suggestion I’d add to that here is to add horse armor books to the fortress loot tables.
Golden Sledges
I just tweaked the golden hammer from the Fabric Hammers mod to have a crimson stick handle.
A new tool that can’t be crafted, like a trident. A golden mallet, pretty much, but I’m calling it a sledge to not have it be confused with the mace.
It’d be more common than the mace, but still be rather useful. It can be used to not break blocks, but rather “break down” blocks. My current ideas:
-Turns stone bricks into cracked stone bricks without needing a furnace
-Turns concrete back into concrete powder
Maybe adding this would open the doors for us to crack even more blocks, like regular clay bricks, ice, or glass?
Soul Pearls
Not an item exclusive to fortresses, but you could find them here, by bartering, or from “creating them” yourself.
As per my rough concept art here, they’d be Ender pearls covered in soul sand.
The soul sand buries the core/\"eye\" of the pearl.
My logic here is that mollusks produce pearls by “purifying” unwanted sand that gets into them. Considering shulkers already exist in the End, I am going to elaborate in my End biome write ups that I’d like the Ender pearl lore to be better established and traced back to mollusk mobs (including several new ones of mine), because I don’t see how Endermen produced them themselves.
Aside from fortresses and bartering, you can also get soul pearls from throwing an Ender pearl on a soul sand block. After 1 minute, it’ll convert to a soul pearl. This is to reference how real pearls can take up to a year to form, but still way more fair and fast for Minecraft.
When throwing a soul pearl, you’ll still get damaged, but, if you’re by any sculk items, you won’t cause vibrations. So, you can use them to occlude sculk while traversing the deep dark.
Admittedly, a niche use on its own, which is why I want them to replace Ender pearls in the eye of Ender recipe.
This would also entail a retexture of the eye of Ender, which I think should now incorporate a soul flame considering its new recipe.
Apologies if my eye of Ender retexture mockup is terrible. The eye's supposed to look like it's burning, like a mini soul flame sun.
Yes, that means End portal frames and Ender chests would need a retexture, too.
I think it’s a reasonable, realistic change that would help make progression more interesting. In retrospect, having magical fire power turn a pearl to an eye doesn’t make much sense, so having it burn souls into an eye at least sounds a morsel more interesting and realistic.
11 pages in my Google Docs on this. I should probably stop, but my next post will be on my ideas for Nether archaeology, and will have a link to this one.

2024.05.26 23:27 Amanda39 [Discussion] Mod Pick The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage by Sydney Padua, Chapters 1 - 7

Welcome to the Pocket Universe!
I'm so glad I've gotten to introduce you all to this weird, fun, and informative graphic novel. The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage began its existence as a short web comic about the life of the first computer programmer, Augusta Ada Byron King, Countess of Lovelace (who, thankfully, preferred to go by "Ada Lovelace" or "AAL"). However, because many readers misunderstood a joke at the end of the original comic, the author, Sydney Padua, felt compelled to expand the story into a full graphic novel, and thus we get see Lovelace and Babbage live on as steampunk superheroes.
Ada Lovelace: The Secret Origin!
This first chapter is the original comic, and it's the only truly "nonfiction" chapter in the book, telling the story of the real Ada Lovelace's life.
Ada Lovelace was the daughter of Lord Byron, who walked out shortly after she was born. I don't think the comic does enough to make it clear what an over-the-top hedonist Lord Byron was. Historians call him "the first rockstar" because people were as obsessed with his scandals as they were with his poetry. He had affairs with everyone, men and women, including his half-sister Augusta Leigh. (Yes, that's why Ada Lovelace went by her middle name!)
Ada's mother, Lady Byron, was obsessed with the idea that she needed to prevent Ada from turning out like Lord Byron. This resulted in Ada having a bizarrely abusive childhood in which she was forbidden from doing anything imaginative and was tied to a board and locked in closets to prevent fidgeting. Of course, like all real people, Lady Byron was a complex individual and not a one-dimensional monster. She was actively involved in the anti-slavery movement and educational reform, and I'd probably really admire her if it weren't for the unforgiveable child abuse. Anyhow, one amazing thing resulted from Ada's childhood: she became a mathematical prodigy.
Ada studied under the mathematician Mary Somerville, who introduced her to Charles Babbage. Babbage was a mathematician who was pretty much the definition of "eccentric genius." He had amazing plans for building a "difference engine," a machine that could perform complicated calculations, but his tendency to insult anyone who would provide him with funding, his mismanagement of the funds he did receive, and his frequent public meltdowns over not being able to concentrate due to street musicians, all prevented his plans from actually succeeding.
One day, Ada published a translation of an article about Babbage's other idea, the "Analytical Engine," a larger, steam-powered version of the Difference Engine. Her translation included original footnotes that were longer than the actual article. In these notes, she suggested that the Engine could be used for more than just calculations. Branching conditional statements could allow the machine to solve all sorts of problems and generate all sorts of output: Ada had invented the concept of computer programming.
Ada and Babbage became friends, and worked together on plans for the Analytical Engine. It's impossible to predict what could have happened if Ada hadn't died of uterine cancer in her thirties, leaving Babbage a dysfunctional mess who couldn't continue the project on his own. The entire field of computer science was set back a century.
You all know I enjoy writing funny recaps of stories, so you can imagine how much empathy I feel for Sydney Padua at this point: how can you possibly tell a funny story when you're required to end it with "and then one of them died and the other failed and their dreams never came true"? Fortunately, Padua found an amazingly creative solution: You see, Babbage believed that parallel universes might exist! In that case, there may be a universe in which Lovelace does not die, the Analytical Engine (which Padua insists on misnaming as "the Difference Engine" because it sounds cooler), does get built, and the two of them become crime-fighting superheroes! Of course, Babbage thinks this means going after street musicians, and Lovelace thinks it means going after poets....
The Pocket Universe
The ending of the previous chapter was supposed to be a joke, but enough people asked Padua "so when are you writing the parallel universe story?" that she finally went "screw it" and wrote the rest of the graphic novel.
After a rogue time traveler screwed up the timeline, authorities separated the rest of this book into a self-contained "pocket universe." In order to compress this universe, they removed color and the third dimension, effectively turning it into a comic book. The timeline itself in this universe is inconsistent, allowing people and events from the 19th century to overlap in unpredictable ways. Most importantly, the principal law of physics in this universe is E = mc2, where "E" is "entertainment value." This is why the story centers around Babbage and Lovelace, and also why Lovelace's husband is never mentioned: the Earl of Lovelace was so boring, he ceased to have mass and became invisible.
The Person from Porlock
Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote Kubla Khan while in a dreamlike haze (probably from opium), but was snapped out of it and couldn't finish the poem because a "person on business from Porlock" knocked at his door, interrupting him.
In this version of events, the Person from Porlock was none other than Ada Lovelace, disguised as an insurance salesman, nefariously preventing Coleridge from creating poetry. This doesn't actually make sense, since Coleridge wrote "Kubla Khan" before Lovelace was born, but this is the Pocket Universe, so timelines don't matter.
Lovelace and Babbage vs. The Client!
Our first long story in the Pocket Universe. Lovelace has apparently had a makeover to fit her new role as steampunk superhero: she wears pants when no one but Babbage is around, and smokes a pipe. (There is no historical basis for either of these things. According to Sydney Padua's website: "She smokes a pipe in the comic because it’s the sort of thing Victorian crime-fighting bipolar calculating machines are wont to do.") Babbage, meanwhile, has not updated his costume in the slightest, because he already had this "eccentric genius" thing down before reality stopped being real.
Surprise visit from Queen Victoria! Things get tense when the Engine stops working and Babbage proceeds to do what he was infamous for doing in real life: being way too awkward around the people who he expected to fund his projects. Fortunately, Lovelace saves the day by making the Engine print ASCII art.
Primary Sources
Babbage finds Queen Victoria's diary, and is horrified to learn that the only time it mentions him is in reference to someone saying that Babbage always makes a fool of himself. This is an actual quote from Queen Victoria's diary in real life, by the way. (Unfortunately, it appears that the site hosting the diary has since been taken down, and I can't find it anywhere else online.)
Lovelace and Babbage vs. the Economic Model!
The Prime Minister has put Lovelace and Babbage in charge of saving the economy! Unfortunately, Babbage's personal experiences with money mostly involve wasting his government funding, and Lovelace's involve losing a ton of money trying unsuccessfully to rig a horse race. (That's not a joke. That actually happened in real life.)
I'm going to be honest: of all the subjects covered in this book, economics is by far the one I know the least about. I feel like there were probably jokes in this section that went over my head. (Thank God for the annotations.) But the basic gist is that Lovelace and Babbage try to build an "economic model" as a literal engine, it goes out of control, and races over hills shaped like a graph of an economic bubble. Fortunately, there's someone here to save the day: Isambard Kingdom Brunel, an absolutely fascinating person whom I'd never heard of before reading this book.
Luddites!
I'm in awe of the pun in this chapter. A "computer" back then was a person who did arithmetic as a career. So when Lovelace and Babbage learn that the Analytical Engine is being attacked by computer hackers... yeah, it's actually getting hacked away by computers, armed with slide rules and abacuses.
The Luddites were a serious social issue during the Industrial Revolution. With new technology making old jobs obsolete, people in the working class became unemployed, leading to poverty and rioting. Lord Byron was a famous spokesperson for the Luddites, which makes the (fictional) scenario in this comic rather ironic.
That's all for this week! Join us next week when u/Pythias leads us to the conclusion!

2024.05.26 22:58 S33H0rze Lily’s story

I’ve been commenting on this forum for awhile but never posted about my story with my soul cat, Lily. I lost her 2/25 of this year.. and I’m still having a lot of bad days. Without getting too much into my childhood, I’ve always had connections with animals, the kitties especially. I have always had issues with anxiety and depression, not fitting in. Throughout life my cats have always come to my rescue to help me regulate and create a safe space. Lily was a master at her craft. I got her as a baby right out of college, soon after the loss of my childhood kitty.. I didn’t have a lot of healthy friendships, I felt very isolated and grief stricken. Immediately Lily was this shining ball of sunshine, so brave, she would follow me everywhere and was always doing weird things so confidently lol I went through a really bad depression, she was the only thing that made me smile during that time.. years went by, I got married and she was there during some awful experiences. I moved out on my own and even though I was so scared to be in the apartment by myself she was there to sit on my lap on shitty furniture to make me feel less afraid..for every job interview I didn’t believe in myself enough to get, she would be there paw on my chest and giving me courage. For every day off, she would hang out on the patio with me curled up on the bench while I read. She moved with me from California to Chicago, always braver in exploring the home than I felt being in a new space on my own. And really I was never alone with her there, even when I feel Like I struggle (still) to reach out to friends. Throughout the years, she continually created that bubble of safety, all those times where she would cuddle with me on the bed, curl up With me under the covers and it was ok just to hide out in bed and feel her love and comfort. Through Covid and working from home, she sat in during so many obnoxious meetings, looking at the screen. She suffered from kidney disease early on, around the time I left my ex. It was mostly controlled with her diet until she got older and needed more medications. She was so patient with me.. some medications she liked, others she hated but always showing that patience and forgiveness again and again. Even through learning how to do sub q on her. Sometimes I feel like.. she is the healthiest relationship and best expression of love I’ve had in my life. She was always there to give lazy “meep”s when I’d reach out with my hand to rest on her side, or to stretch her tail across my neck or pet the back of my hand with her tail. She would get on my lap and lay across my arms when she knew I was having issues with anxiety, it’s like she’d do a hard reboot with me every time. During the months before she passed, she started sleeping next to my head on my pillow, sometimes winding her paws around my hair. About 9 months before, I moved from Chicago to Washington. She enjoyed the patio with cat grass grown just for her and I’d sit with her on the patio chairs and we watched the birds together. She grew more sick, the vet couldn’t figure out what was wrong and I scrambled over Tanya’s site for hours trying to figure it out. In the end, it was cancer..a giant mass by a major blood vessel compacting her already inflamed intestines, tumors her pancreas and also worsening heart disease. I had taken her to a new vet since the current one had stopped responding to my calls even before the ultrasound appointment. The new vet after reviewing the results said it was time to let her go and I cried so hard in that exam room that I felt like I couldn’t leave and the team gave me a bottled water. That night she stopped eating and was no longer able to get to the litter box by herself. I stayed up all night helping her to her box and holding her favorite water mug for her to drink out of. She had her home euthanasia appointment, and it was peaceful. The day before she woke me up to sit her paw in my hand and she sat there with her eyes closed like she was saying it was ok, she had a long beautiful life for almost 21 years. She was always so wise and acted like she had done everything a million times before, moving to new homes, so many new environments and even death, I don’t know what I believe spiritually but sometimes I wonder if she’s been here before, she acted like don’t sweat it, I’ve done this before.. I know she loved her life but I feel like a part of me died with her even with her seeming to tell me that it’s ok, we all pass, she wouldn’t be in pain anymore and we had the best life together. Outside of the things I’ve gotten for her, things that hold her hair, her aura frame flipping through 2,700 photos during her life, I can’t get rid of her bed I set next to my pillow, she used to sleep in there when she wasn’t on my pillow. It was the bed she went into after her sedative. It still smells like her so I can’t bear to put it away even after 3 months (third month anniversary this weekend). I still spend a lot of time crying, her birthday earlier this month was so heartbreaking without her. I have a hard time feeling safe and even harder time regulating myself even when I try to prioritize self care. I miss her so much. I feel like life right now absolutely sucks. There are so many moments each day where I just wish I could touch her again or feel her paw on my chest when I’m having really bad anxiety, I miss the way her tail would feel flipping up against me or even her paws wrapped up in my hair. I miss her little trumpety brrrrrts, or how I’d have to put my ear on her back to hear her purring. I feel so incredibly lost and vulnerable.
I wish I could do her justice in writing about everything she’s done for me, but it’s so hard to without digging up really painful personal details that I don’t want “out there.” She was always right by my side for all of it. There are so many memories that would have been nightmares if I couldn’t reach out my hand and just feel her. She was always watching over me, sometimes a little judgey about it when I needed her to be. As it is now, lights out before 11 still happens even with her gone. I still go out on the patio and watch the birds the way she’d demand we’d do, even when I don’t feel like going outside. She was the best part of my life for decades.. she always made me believe in myself a little more, or on days where I just couldn’t rise up to the challenge, we’d hide from the world in bed and rest. I’d like to think she watches over me.. I’d like to think she’s sending someone else. Next year I’m moving again and it will be the first home in adulthood won’t have her in it.. the first night is going to be devastating but I have to believe it will all be ok one day, she would have wanted me to believe this. Thank you for reading.

2024.05.26 17:47 g3thic [F4A][Literate] Roleplay Partner!

Hello again! I’m not sure if you’ve seen my other posts about a fandom roleplay but this one is gonna be about any roleplay in general, fandoms included. This’ll be pretty detailed and I’ll let you know the parts if you want to skip ahead (I suggest you don’t). If you don’t wanna read all of this, then don’t. This was made for people willing to read blocks of paragraphs and maybe even respond with their own.
INTRODUCTION
My name is Hina. To know more about me, I hail from Japan and I have been an avid writer ever since I moved to the States when I was 11. My second language is English but I believe it’s been pretty good. I recently turned 22 years old and I'm female. Talking about age, I would be comfortable with you being 17+ and preferably at least 20. Roleplaying with minors isn’t a big thing for me, I apologize. Im currently in GMT+1 timezone but that’s temporarily. I’m here until July and then i’ll be in the west coast, PST timezone. Let’s see.. What other information can I give you? I would say I enjoy skating, basketball, watching tv shows and anime, and reading. My favorite anime is Nana and Death Note.
GENRES + FANDOM
I am not looking for a specific roleplay. I would say i’m skilled in all genres. Sci-fi, fantasy, horror, apocalypse. All of that. Even slice of life, though that depends on what type of plot exactly. To be more specific on each genre, starting off with fantasy, I'm more used to high fantasy and mythology. I’m not that great with medieval, unfortunately. DnD based role plays aren’t really fit for me and I struggle playing with species like ogres. Just putting that out here. For fantasy, I don’t have any specific ideas.
Sci-fi is the genre I have more skill in. Most of my roleplays are based off of them! Specifically, I’m fine with all subgenres of that.
For other genres like horror and apocalypse, I do have some taste. I really like monsters and creepy things from the horror genre like vampires and all of that and I even have my own idea set up in older times dealing with vampire lords and hunters and all of that. I also enjoy eldritch type horror. I also like that one sun genre of it, like video game horror? I’m not sure how to describe it. I also forgot if it even has an official name or if it’s just something used to describe the horror genre. I like Resident Evil, so maybe that’ll tell you the type of horror I usually enjoy. I do have a developed idea of something more eldritch horror.
More on fandoms! To get some other things down, I usually only play OC unless the character you want me to play is one I know more about and I'm more comfortable playing. The fandoms I like in the more anime way are Jojo’s, Nana, Death Note, JJK, AOT, Haikyuu, and probably more. I’m well versed in the Jojo’s, Aot, and JJK fandoms but less knowledgeable on Death Note since i’ve only seen it once. Other fandoms i’m in include ATLA, TLOK, Harry Potter, Resident Evil, Marvel, DC, and many more.

2024.05.26 12:36 JamaicanTransplant Up and off to Soka 2030

Written last night but I fell asleep before posting. Def TL;DR.
Sitting on couch with Mom and Dad. We binged two episodes of Season Four The Good Doctor. Kitten will be so pissed, she will have to catch up on her own. It's OK, Kitten. I know you are absolutely glowing right now. Saturday is Heidi Day.
After the check up with my pediatrician, I stopped by at the restaurant where Jammy was playing. They were just starting their second set where they just do covers. I knew what their plan was because Kitten has been talking about it non-stop. They told the audience that they were going to cover two songs from every decade of rock and roll. They said they were working from some list they found on Reddit.
I could only stay for the first three songs, two from the 50s and one from the 60s. I heard them do Link Wray's Rumble, Chuck Berry's No Particular Place to Go, and (😛) The Rolling Stones' Satisfaction. I had an appointment up in the Bronx so I had to leave and caught only the opening of The Doors' Light My Fire (with Heidi's solo😭).
All that I could say is that they were lit. And WTF happened (sorry, Susan) to Little Sweet Quiet Cardi? She was transformed to Rock Monster. I almost peed in my pants. I found I couldn't take my eyes off of her. And she can dance! Sorry, Jammy, I see the writing on the wall. In a few years the name of your band will be "Cardi and the Jammy."
Dr. Wu told me that Coach was absolutely right. I have to work with a certified trainer who knows exactly what he or she is doing. She said there are probably many good trainers like this in the city. But the only one she can personally highly recommend is a certain "DeWitt." The problem is that he has changed his gym to one in the Bronx. She called him up on the spot and he had some time to see me in the afternoon.
So after Jammy I took a bus to the local #6 train, got off somewhere I never heard about before in the Bronx, and then caught a bus to his gym. It took over an hour! Could I make this type of commitment given my schedule? DeWitt would really have to be worth it.
But my heart melted when I met him. It felt like he instantly understood where my body was, where it needed to go to 10K (and maybe half marathon in the future), and what I had to do. After talking a bit, he gave me a tour of the gym and put me on a few machines for about 30 minutes. There was no doubt about it that he was my trainer. I think Kitten will also enjoy working with him.
I told him about her, my modeling work for the next couple of weeks, the trip to Scotland, and the summer job at the RV Camp. Should I start training now or wait until after the summer? "Definitely start now. During Covid I learned how to train through Zoom and you can make the most out of your summer. Let's front load and go for two or three sessions each week until you leave. You will have to join the gym. I strongly recommend the annual membership. Is this within your budget?" I just handed him my credit card.
That was that. Back to Kitten. I can picture her now singing with ALDI and this is where she really is Peak Heidi. So she has worked very hard today and I want her to come home to a nice toasty bed.
Meanwhile I'm telling Mom and Dad about my visit with Dr. Wu to make sure I was ready to start 10K training. I've seen her for as long as I can remember. She is a pediatrician but also has something called a "Family Practice" specialty so I can keep coming to her. I tried to pantomime for then what it's like sitting next to all these little kids in the waiting room with parents staring suspiciously at me.
The typical checkup except I had My Very First EKG. "All seems OK. I don't see any problems with you accelerating your physical training. I will let you know if I see anything unusual in the blood and urine tests."
I just had to keep performing for Mom and Dad the case history part. Dr. Wu trying to keep a straight professional face, my straight-face cool response, followed by my real bubble response: "How are you? How are you really? Do you have any stresses? Drinking, drugs? Menstruation? Are you sexually active? Abuse? Suicidal ideation? Home? School? Friends? Anything atypical with your life?
We laughed a lot and watched another episode.
I don't have any memories of what happened next but I must have fallen asleep and somehow I am here in the bed with Kitten snoring happily away. The Fam (minus Kitten) will meet up with Cardi's family at the Soka 2030.

2024.05.26 09:51 mercyinthewell post-party scattered thoughts

i think the root of a vast majority of my "symptoms" (which feels like a weird term to use because it's just so baked into my existence) is an inherent feeling of the self being an illusion, which may be something im never gonna be able to fully reconcile with. so i look for ways to fill that void and reaffirm Myself, positive or negative. i think this is a throughline between the cluster b personalities n is also a primary source of dpdr for a lot of people
a lot of people describe (the emotional aspects of) dissociation as a chronic numbness and i totally get that aspect of it but for me it's as if my emotions cut skin-deep but my entire existence is thinner than skin, everything feels shallow but it also consumes half of my being while the other half watches
ive always been an overactive thinker, back when i was a kid it was mostly about more concrete stuff like tornadoes and all that, my thought patterns entered the realm of "questions without answers" when i was like, 9? some fucked up stuff happened but overall i was a troubled but bubbly and happy kid i think idk there's not much there i can latch onto besides photos and other peoples testimonies (n that whole memory thing got thrown into the mix at some point n that shit is like a microcosm for everything i say in this post)
realizing that all i am is a series of internal discussions fucked me up. the advent of complex language was obviously a key step in humanities (humanity's?) development but i wonder how much damage thinking in Words can do to someone/how much it has done throughout history. if there isnt some sort of divine creator, its fucking Insane that we are able to process intertwining complex concepts of an internal world that doesn't really Exist but is also our entire being, and sooo many issues stem from that self awareness. im definitely overly self aware, in good and bad ways. i get a few of the external positives of being self-aware in the typical sense of the word(s) but internally its a mess because its often maladaptive or neurotic and idk imma transition to a new thought but its very relevant
due to the illusory nature of "my self" i get caught up in thinking about things conceptually rather than inherently feeling them, and once something Does hit me deep i just step further away from myself, despite confronting it with my conscious thoughts. fear is the main emotion that really gets through, fear for myself or worrying for othersCRAZY DEJA VU JUST NOW, normally the fear of getting abandoned or the wellbeing of people i care about. even though now i approach all (most) of my emotions with conscious thoughts and words, i can never really fully associate with anything im thinking, even if i understand what the words mean, there's just a layer they can't get past. i think that's where the thought loops come in. a lot of questions don't have answers and even the ones that do don't sink deep enough to give me some sort of mental closure.
there's a passage in this Amazing video game, my favorite narrative of all time, Who's Lila, about how we're like the pupils of an eye- we can percieve so much, but the pupil cannot see itself, and if the pupil were able to look at itself, it would cease to exist. all of these words im thinking and writing, every time i Try to look at my deepest self, im really just looking at an imperfect self portrait, a photograph from an outside perspective, no matter how much it looks like me it isn't the "real" me. even if my portrait was perfect, infinitely detailed and accurate I'm still not seeing where I am from My perspective, we're all seeing ourselves from a distance.
maybe thats an obtuse n hard to understand analogy but it makes a lot of sense to me in a deep way, which is rare. in the context of dpdr, it mirrors that feedback loop of symptoms worsening becaude youre overthinking about them and why so many people say "Just stop thinking about it!". maybe thats part of why theres so much comorbidity between dpdr and other mental conditions- i mentioned that shallow sense of being and all that at the start of this post, and that makes it so much harder to just Not think about it.
a lot of people can grasp the general Idea of dpdr because im sure many have probably gone through dissociative episodes and recovered, but for a lot of people with chronic mental health issues (OCD, cluster b personality disorders, CPTSD, seem the most common around here) that Shift into unreality must be so much harder to come back from, because a lot of us already tend to overthink and self-sabotage and constantly feel empty or threatened or scared or sick or etc etc etc fuck those moments where things feel right but all you can think about is how you feel Okay again and tjen youre like Whats okay If i was really okay I wouldn't be obsessing over what okay is, then it's gone. just reminds me of the inability to cherish anything because im busy thinking about how i should be cherishing it.
i havent lost hope fully. acute intense derealization has always been more of an episodic thing, i dont really feel like my surroundings are totally foreign or im losingvmy Fucking mind and having a stroke all the time anymore, thanks to lamictal and quitting weed, but i think chronic dissociation is just the nature of my existence. ima soldier tho we all are.
even though i wrote all of this ive been doing ok lately i guess, im having fun with my life im on a lil bender doing too much coke meeting cool ppl talking bout real shit but yk how it is
