2024.05.19 09:20 zlaxy On this day 116 years ago, Nikolay Pilchikov, a scientist-physicist, developer of radio-controlled devices, died in Kharkov from a shot in the heart

On this day 116 years ago, Nikolay Pilchikov, a scientist-physicist, developer of radio-controlled devices, died in Kharkov from a shot in the heart
On this day 116 years ago in Kharkov Nikolay Dmitrievich Pilchikov – scientist-physicist, inventor in the field of radio engineering, author of works on optics, terrestrial magnetism, electrical and radio engineering, radioactivity, X-rays, electrochemistry, geophysics, meteorology – was shot in the heart.
At about seven o’clock in the morning of 6 May 1908, a shot rang out in a ward of an expensive Kharkov hospital. Breaking open the door locked from the inside, the doctors saw its only patient – it seemed that his life had been cut short in his sleep. The man was lying in his bunk, as if he hadn’t woken up yet. And if not for the bloodstain on his chest, no one would have realised the tragedy. A revolver lay on the tea-table beside the bed. It was from this revolver that the bullet that had pierced the scientist’s heart had been fired. Could a man who was undergoing medical treatment have carefully placed the gun beside his tea glass and folded his arms across his chest after shooting himself at point-blank range? Nevertheless, the “cadaver book” records ruled the death a suicide.
For some reason forensic experts did not do dactyloscopy – the investigation was not puzzled by fingerprints on the black “bulldog”, which became the murder weapon. And the authoritative professor Nikolai Bokarius, whose name now bears the local Institute of Forensic Medicine, even described Pilchikova’s case in a textbook for lawyers and doctors as an example of temporary purposeful capacity of suicides with fatal gunshot wounds in the heart area. At that, the luminary recommended to take into account not only anatomical features of the injury, but also the functional state of the central nervous system. The picture was completed by the conclusion of pathologists, who found in the killed after the autopsy of the corpse modifications in the structure of the brain.
A purely “police” justification for not considering the murder version was the fact that the incident took place in a locked room on the first floor (as if this could be an obstacle to unauthorised entry).
And a week after the scientist’s death, on 13 May 1908, the head of the police department received a report from the head of the Kharkov security service about the unreliability of the “extreme leftist” Professor Pilchikov, who was known for his active participation in “criminal agitation activities of engineering students”. This was confirmed by a search of the scientist’s house, during which propaganda literature from the period of the first Russian revolution of 1905 was found.
What was Professor Pilchikov doing before he was “worked out” by the police? The scientific fate of Nikolai Dmitrievich was as unusual as his death was mysterious and the fate of outstanding discoveries inexplicable.
The scientist, whose life was cut short at the age of 51, was not only a physicist, but also a lyricist: he was no less talented in composing poetry, painting pictures and playing the violin. But he considered his life’s work to be his scientific career, which was unusually successful.
The son of a public and cultural figure, who was a friend of Taras Shevchenko, was born on 9 May 1857 in Poltava, and already during his studies in gymnasium showed remarkable abilities in exact sciences. Entering the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University, he experimented in new at that time experiments in the field of sound recording, while still a student invented an electric phonograph.
After graduation, the graduate was left to work at the Department of Physics. His first scientific monograph was devoted to optical analysis. Later the scientist made a number of discoveries on the topics of scattered light polarisation and atmospheric ionisation, atmospheric electricity and geomagnetism, radioactivity and X-rays. Pilchikov was awarded the Silver Medal from the Russian Geographical Society for a series of studies of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, during which iron ore deposits near Prokhorovka were predicted.
After defending his thesis at the University of St. Petersburg, the master of physics was appointed privat-docent of the Kharkov University, and two years later he went to practice at a magnetic observatory in Paris, where he discovered flaws in the design of the seismograph and offered his mentors a way to correct them.
Soon the young professor of Kharkov University becomes famous outside Russia, becoming a regular at international scientific conferences and a member of the Toulouse Academy of Sciences.
Nikolay Pilchikov returned to Kharkov as a university professor, where he created a meteorological station that still exists today. To study the upper atmosphere, the professor developed a stratostat and then a high-altitude spacesuit to equip the pilot. The atmospheric optics researcher created his own seismograph and designed equipment to determine magnetic pressure.
Having moved for some time to Odessa (to work at the Imperial Novorossiysk University), in 1894 the scientist invented an original lamp for the study of X-rays, called “Pilchikov’s focus tube”. The optical and galvanic version of the study of electrolysis developed by him made it possible to obtain images on metal plates – so the inventor became the author of electrophotography or photogalvanography.
And on 25 March 1898, Nikolai Pilchikov demonstrated for the first time a device working with radio waves of a certain length and rejecting interference. During his experiments in Odessa he lit a lighthouse with the help of radio waves and moved a railway semaphore, blew up a yacht and made a cannon fire.
The scientist characterised his contribution to radio physics as follows: while Popov and Marconi were looking for a way to transmit a signal over the greatest possible distance, he was solving the problem of cutting off wireless power transmission from extraneous electrical waves. Thus appeared the first device with a protector – a security filter, allowing only the waves addressed to it to reach the mechanism and protecting the equipment from atmospheric and radio interference. The scientist not only designed and manufactured different types of the first protectors, but also tested them in practice.
With the help of his revolutionary device, Professor Pilchikov made it possible to create radio-controlled mine boats that could sink enemy ships without a crew and fire on enemy targets. In proposing the idea to the Russian military, the inventor characterised it as a way of detonating objects at a considerable distance without cables or other visible communication.
Applying for financial assistance from the military department, Pilchikov planned to spend 15,000 roubles on laboratory equipment, manufacture of devices and their testing with the support of the Sevastopol naval forces. For his part, the scientist undertook to keep the know-how in strict secrecy and not to publish any information about the development in scientific literature. As a result, this circumstance may have contributed to the fact that the scientist’s works disappeared and he himself may have been eliminated.
Military engineers discussed the professor’s petition for research funds with reference to foreign experience. Specialists compared Pilchikov’s achievements with the developments of foreign scientists experimenting with wireless telegraph, to whom the authorities did not refuse anything. For example, Preece was authorised for experiments by the postal department of England, Marconi obtained in 1897 large sums of money from the naval department of Italy, and the Berlin scientist Slaby received aeronautical parks, watercraft and troops of the Potsdam garrison from the Emperor of Germany. Pilchikov, on the other hand, had a much more extensive programme and was naturally expected to produce the most ambitious results.
On his return to Kharkov in 1902, the professor continued his research in the best-equipped physical laboratory of those times, the local University of Technology. He was also allocated a ship “Dnestr” and funds for marine experiments. On the ship in 1903 the scientist equipped a receiving radio station, and on the Chersonese lighthouse – transmitting.
Alas, neither the scheme of those protectors, nor the content of the experiments, nor their further fate are known today. In the archives we found only information about a letter of gratitude to Professor Pilchikov from the Commander of the Pacific Fleet. It was dated the beginning of September 1904. It is clear that in the midst of the war with Japan secret military developments could be of interest to both belligerents. Moreover, other external enemies were also interested in preventing Russia’s military advantage.
Professor Pilchikov’s research competed with American experiments in the Maritime Ministry under Tesla, who was also working on the task of wireless control of a minelayer from the shore. This is a case in science when “an idea is in the air” and the same discovery is independently made by scientists at different ends of the world.
It is believed that the first radio-controlled telemechanical system in the world was developed by Nikola Tesla – he patented and presented an unprecedented ship model in the summer of 1898, but came to the discovery the day before, in spring. And “Russian Tesla” Nikolai Pilchikov tested a similar invention in March of the same year, which was reported in a note in the “Odessa Review”, which for some reason remained unnoticed by the scientific community.
The “two Nicholas” had a lot in common, despite the fact that they lived and created on different continents. Scientists were almost the same age. Both had no family – neither wives nor close relatives. Both were undividedly attracted to physical science – the mysteries of radioactivity, X-rays and lightning. But to Pilchikov did not appear one day George Westinghouse with a million dollars for four dozen patents. And an understanding friend, as Tesla had in the person of Katharine Johnson, next to Nikolay Dmitrievich was not there either…
Being left without further state support, Pilchikov could not complete the work on his wireless protector. In 1905 he left to observe the solar eclipse in Algeria, from where he returned with failing health. Ill-health was aggravated by an acute feeling of loneliness.
1908 was a fateful year in the fate of the scientist. It was the best time of the year, the beginning of May, a time of intoxication with life and romantic dreams. But for Pilchikov, the “delight of nature” had no inspiring meaning: five days before his own birthday, he went to a psychoneurological clinic. And it happened under very mysterious circumstances.
According to police reports, the owner of a private hospital and a well-known doctor I. Y. Platonov received a call from an unknown man on 3 May with a request to hospitalise Nikolai Dmitrievich Pilchikov. It was asked to prepare a separate room where the patient would be alone.
When the professor appeared in the clinic, the doctors saw nothing critical in his condition. He was elegantly dressed, and in his hands held a suitcase with papers. Two days later, a shot rang out in the ward, and the papers were gone. Not a single piece of his war work was found among his household belongings. The blueprints of inventions of world importance, which the scientist had not even had time to patent, disappeared.
Wasn’t the murder then the final fat point in the planned operation? And didn’t the inventor-physicist take with him to the ward what the special services hunting for his military developments were tracking down?
Perhaps it was in the hospital that Nikolai Pilchikov, who had a premonition of trouble, tried to hide from his threatening pursuers? Or maybe they put him there so that it would be easier to realise what they had planned? And who were these mysterious killers?..
We will probably never get answers to these questions. But it is known how the brilliant ideas of the tragically departed scientist were put into practice.
In 1913, the first radio-controlled aeroplane took to the skies. Four years later, a German boat controlled from a plane blew up the quay in the English harbour of Newport. In the same year, 1917, a German ship was damaged by a British minelayer guided from a radio-controlled aeroplane. In 1925 the first mine without wires appeared. And in 1943 the Soviet troops destroyed the Nazi headquarters with General von Braun in Kharkov occupied by the enemy by controlled explosion from Voronezh.
Radio warfare has long been supplemented by radio defence, where the first role is played by devices like Pilchikov’s protectors. Thanks to radio defence, in 1944 the British were invulnerable to German fighters in the Libyan desert. Radio locks of increased complexity are used in satellite navigation and launching systems for space and military rockets. And all responsible radio electronic equipment is protected from interference by modern devices working on the principle of Professor Pilchikov’s protector – the “Russian Tesla”, who became a hindrance to someone himself…

Once upon a time, I found myself needing to take hot, home-cooked meals to work. I came across the TRAVELISIMO Electric Lunch Box and my life changed for the better. This electric lunchbox heats up your meal in just 20-30 minutes with its powerful 80W power. All you need to do is plug it in, close the lid, and wait for your meal to be hot and ready.
One of the things that stood out about this lunchbox was its leak-proof design. The enhanced lid and secure snap-lock system prevent spills, making it a reliable companion for transporting any type of dish, whether liquid or not. I could even carry soup without worrying about it spilling all over my bag.
The TRAVELISIMO Electric Lunch Box is also incredibly versatile. With its various voltage settings (12V/24V and 110V), it suits cars, trucks, or office desks. I love how it allows me to enjoy homemade, healthy meals on the road, avoiding fast-food stops with ease.
Cleaning the lunch box is a breeze, another feature that I really appreciated. Made with top-tier 304 stainless steel, it ensures food safety and durability while also being dishwasher-friendly. The stainless-steel container is very easy to clean, which is a big plus when it comes to lunchboxes.
However, there were a couple of downsides worth mentioning. First, the power cord is a bit short, which can be inconvenient if you're trying to use it in a car or at a desk without an extension cord. Second, the lunch box can take up quite a bit of room in a bag, so it's not the most portable option out there.
In conclusion, the TRAVELISIMO Electric Lunch Box is a great choice for anyone looking to take warm, home-cooked meals with them on the go. Its leak-proof design and easy cleaning make it a reliable and convenient choice. While there are some minor drawbacks, overall, this lunchbox has made my life so much easier and my meals healthier and more delicious.

Not only is it sleek and stylish, but it's also incredibly efficient at keeping my meals warm throughout the day. The 80W heating function ensures that my food stays hot, even after hours in the car.
The highlight of this lunchbox has to be its portability and convenience. I can easily take it with me wherever I go, whether it's to the office or on a camping trip. Plus, with a capacity of 1.8 liters, I can pack enough food for multiple meals.
However, one downside I've noticed is that the leak-proof seal isn't as effective as advertised. On a couple of occasions, some liquid has seeped out, but overall it hasn't been a major issue.

When I first saw the Hotlogic Mini 12V, I knew I had to give it a try. As someone who spends a lot of time on the road, I was tired of eating cold meals and dealing with microwaves. This little device has completely changed my lunch routine.
The Hotlogic Mini is incredibly easy to use. All you need to do is place your meal in a container, insert it into the pouch, plug it into your car's 12V outlet, and let it work its magic. You don't even need to monitor it; just go about your business and enjoy your hot meal when you're ready.
One thing that stood out for me was the even cooking. I've tried other food warmers before, but they always ended up burning or drying out my food. The Hotlogic Mini ensures your food stays moist and delicious without any extra effort from you.
However, there are a few cons to consider. First, the heating time can be a bit slow, especially for frozen meals. It's not a big deal for me since I usually have plenty of time while I'm driving, but if you're in a hurry, this might not be the best choice.
Second, the power cord is quite short, which can be inconvenient if your car's 12V outlet is located far away from your seat. I've had to make do with a few extension cords, but it would be nice if the cord was longer.
Overall, the Hotlogic Mini 12V has made my long drives much more enjoyable. It's a convenient, portable, and easy-to-use device that keeps my food hot and delicious. While there are some minor drawbacks, I highly recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a way to enjoy warm meals on the go.

Its automatic temperature control reaches up to 90°C (194°F), ensuring that my food stays nice and warm. The aluminum insulate bag not only keeps my food warm but also maintains a safe thermal condition during transportation.
On the downside, the heating plate dimension is relatively smaller than I initially expected, which limits the amount of food I can heat at once. Additionally, the heating plate isn't as durable as I would like it to be - I had to replace it after a few months of regular use.
Overall, the Car Food Warmer has made my daily lunch routine more enjoyable, but I wish it had a larger heating surface and a slightly more durable heating plate.

I've been using the Eocolz Electric Lunch Box for a few weeks now, and it's been a game-changer in my daily routine. This convenient little device has turned my cold lunchbox into a warm and comforting spot for my meals.
It's incredibly easy to use - just place your food in the stainless steel compartment, plug it in, and wait a few minutes. It even comes with a car plug, making this perfect for long drives or road trips when you need a hot meal on the go.
The highlight of this product is its heating power. I tried it with various foods, including burgers, salmon, and even some soup, and it worked perfectly each time. The best part was that I never had to worry about uneven heating or dry out my food.
The capacity of 1.5 liters is more than enough for a filling lunch, but it doesn't take up too much space in my bag. And speaking of space, the additional plastic compartment is a great feature that allows me to keep my side dishes separate from my main dish.
There are a few cons though. The lid can be a bit difficult to latch down, requiring some extra effort. Additionally, the power cord is on the shorter side, which may limit where you can use it.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Eocolz Electric Lunch Box for anyone looking for a convenient way to enjoy warm meals wherever they are. Whether you're in the office, school, or on the road, this little warmer will make your lunchtime more enjoyable and satisfying.

I recently took this portable electric lunch box on a week-long business trip, and I must say, it has been a game changer for me. No more cold, unappealing meals or relying on expensive and unhealthy fast food options. The ability to enjoy a hot, homemade meal anywhere has made my travels so much more enjoyable.
The 80W power ensures quick and efficient heating, and the various voltage settings make it suitable for use in cars, trucks, or office desks. The leak-proof design provides peace of mind when transporting saucy or liquid dishes, while the stainless-steel construction ensures durability and easy cleaning.
On the downside, it does not have a timer function, which would have been a nice addition for those who prefer to set and forget their meals. Additionally, the lid can be a little difficult to secure at times. However, these minor issues do not outweigh the overall convenience and quality this lunch box provides for people on the go.

Warm, Balanced Meals On-The-Go"
After using the electric lunch box for a week, I can confidently say that it's been an absolute lifesaver. The convenience of being able to heat up my food in my car or at home is invaluable. I'm a busy person, always on the go, but this lunch box has made sure I don't have to compromise on eating a warm, balanced meal.
The highlight feature for me is the dual voltage capability. Not only can I heat my food in my car using a 12V power source, but also at home with a 110V power source. It's versatile and perfect for my lifestyle.
The removable stainless steel container is another standout feature. Not only does it keep my food warm, but it's also incredibly easy to clean. Plus, the separate power cord and hidden power plug make it safe and convenient to use.
However, I'll be honest and say that the heating time could be quicker. It usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes to heat up my meal, which can be a bit long if you're in a hurry. Also, it's not recommended for use in the microwave, which might be a downside for some.
In conclusion, this Electric Lunch Box has been a game-changer for me. It's made eating a warm, balanced meal on-the-go incredibly easy, and its unique features make it a must-have for anyone with a busy lifestyle.

To make the most out of your car food warmer, remember to preheat it before placing your meal inside. This will help maintain even temperature and prevent overheating. Another tip is to avoid filling the warmer with excessively wet or greasy foods, as this could cause issues with the heating element or create a mess while driving. Lastly, always allow your warmed-up food to cool down briefly before eatings – hot foods can be difficult to consume safely while on the go, so give yourself enough time to protect yourself from potential burns.

What is a car food warmer?

A car food warmer is a device designed to heat up food while you're on the go. It plugs into your vehicle's 12V socket and uses thermal heating to maintain an ideal temperature for your meal. This allows you to enjoy hot, freshly-prepared dishes while driving, commuting, or during long road trips.

How do car food warmers work?

https://preview.redd.it/jxy5l6guqb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58446cd1e51bea61e879f2705c69b2a5a554acbb
Car food warmers work by heating the interior of the warming container, which in turn heats up the food inside. The device usually includes a power cord that plugs into your vehicle's 12V socket, providing battery power to generate heat. Some models may also have temperature control features, allowing you to set the desired warmth level for your food.

What types of foods can be warmed up with a car food warmer?

  • Soups and stews
  • Pasta dishes
  • Casseroles and pot pies
  • Sandwiches and burritos
  • Hot beverages (such as coffee or tea)

How long does it take for a car food warmer to heat up food?

The time it takes for a car food warmer to heat up your meal depends on the specific device and the nature of the food. Generally, you can expect it to take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes for your food to reach a warm temperature. Some models may offer faster heating times, but this will vary by product.

Can a car food warmer be used to cook food?

No, a car food warmer is not designed for cooking food. Its primary purpose is to maintain a warm temperature for pre-cooked dishes or reheat meals that have already been prepared. For cooking, you'll need an appliance specifically designed for that purpose, such as a microwave or stovetop.

How do I choose the best car food warmer?

  1. Consider the size and capacity of the warming container. Choose one that can accommodate the types of meals you typically prepare.
  2. Look for a model with adjustable temperature settings if you want more control over the heating process.
  3. Choose a reliable and well-built car food warmer from a reputable brand to ensure durability and safety while using in your vehicle.
  4. Read product reviews and consider the experiences of others who have used similar devices to gauge the quality and performance of the model you're considering.

2024.05.19 04:49 Afcm96 I did it yesterday and it feels great

Hi guys, I hope this gives you a bit of inspiration and I’m using this platform as a way to vent some of the anger i have and voice to channel everything i have inside of me.
I (27m) cut off my narcissistic mom (67f) yesterday. To give you some back story i grew up without a father and in a family predominantly of women, and was always raised to believe what my mom said was the gospel and to follow rules to a tea. Growing up under her household was as you’re already imagining: we had our electricity cut off multiple times especially during the winter, made our birthday parties about herself especially my last one, and everything had to go according to her and her likings, she would suck her kids and parents up for money, left us all in a precarious financial situation, took loans under our names and lived a very luxurious lifestyle until everyone cut her off.
Every time she kept on saying how it was everyone else’s fault and that her kids were a waste, they should be grateful for everything she had done growing up (like taking care of us was not an obligation but charity) and multiple times if we didn’t validate her craziness she would lock us outside until we would apologise to her. Well in September i met the most amazing woman one can ever think of (24f) and it completely changed my life, coming from the same background as me but another country (I’m from Europe and she’s a US citizen and this detail will be important later).
She taught me so much about what NPD was and to be aware of her and my surroundings, and I’m completely grateful for everything she has done for me. Well this January things got extremely toxic between me and her and i decided to visit my girlfriend and while here in the states we decided to get married, soon found out there was a chance for me to stay here permanently and we took that chance, although we’re now in the process of getting my citizenship i am so happy that i get to wake up next to the woman i love everyday but not everyone is very happy about that..
When we got married i told her and she was.. not happy to say the least, and in the last few months has been posting very incestuous posts on social media about how kids should always listen to their moms and how my wife stole her “family”. All of this was too much for both of us to take so we decided to have a final say to her and blocked her completely. It is scary not having that familiarity but i can promise if you’re going through the same thing right now that it is the right move for you. Don’t let the narcissist take over your life, you’re worth so much and the grass is greener on the other side. Things might get tough but surround yourself by people that genuinely love and care about you, reading some of these stories inspired us to take this leap and I’m forever grateful to have found this subreddit!

2024.05.19 03:10 houseghostguest 14 weeks pp and undersupplier

I’m 14 weeks postpartum and an under supplier. I started out wanting to EBM but we faced challenges along the way - nipple trauma due to nurses introducing a nipple shield when not needed and wrong size, a tongue tie we decided to not fix, triple feeding - and decided maybe 3 weeks in to primarily pump, then switched entirely to pumping when my baby decided they had a bottle preference.
I’ve pumped pretty much the entire time and went from maybe a half oz or less a pump to producing 16-20 oz total a day. I’ve tried pretty much everything except fenugreek and brewers yeast. I’m starting mother’s milk tea since my sister said it helped her, but I want to get my thyroid tested.
Is it too late for me? I know it’s supply and demand at this point so I’m not sure if I just want closure or if there’s anything I can actually do to produce more. My baby definitely prefers BM to formula.
My midwife seems to think it wouldn’t help at this point to get my thyroid tested and recommended fenugreek or reglan (which scares me because I’m dealing with PPD)

2024.05.19 01:52 damurphy72 Junk I would like to be able to use in the game

VERY TONGUE IN CHEEK
Eggmund: "Eggmund, play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata."
Solar Frontiers and Starlocked board games: I don't want to turn this into a Yakuza or even a Witcher game, but I would totally join a boardgame league at the local Terrabrew outlets. Being the Solar Frontiers champion of the Settled Systems would be good for bragging rights, and maybe worth a minor perk.
Alien Egg: Let me make an omelette...or possibly breed a xeno that I can use to fight other xenos in ritualized combat.
Antique Computer: I used to love all the PipBoy games in Fallout 4.
Binoculars: I haven't put any skill points into using my scanner. If only there was some other way to zoom in my vision over a distance! Spyglass also counts.
Cosmetics Supply Box: Change your facial makeup without having to pay Enhance!
Display Projector: Let me display my photo album pics. I'm honestly surprised you can't craft photo frames that display them.
Electric Tea Pot: Let me brew TEA with all of these tea packets I have.
Empty Half-Globe Display/Empty Stadium Display: Let me display things in them. Radical.
Large Moonshine Jug and other moonshine bits: Let me brew alcohol at my still.
My Friend Wilby and other plushies: We can give Cora books. Why not give Sona stuffed animals?
Ornate Startar: It would be cool if some of my crew would play this if I left it out in the common area.
Portable Desk Fan: This seems like it would make any interior cool. /jk
Quick Boil Coffee Brewer: Let me make coffee with my many bags of coffee.
Scroll Holder: Let the player find Auriel's Bow.

2024.05.18 15:53 Agitated_Twist1398 Medical mystery (hopefully not)

Throwaway account because I don’t want my family members on Reddit worrying
Female 33 years old 5’2” 130lbs Physically active and working at a physically demanding job.
Medical Hx: Genetic Torsion Dystonia (dyt1 mutation), Stevens Johnson Syndrome (2005), cholecystectomy (2008), IVF treatments (2020), Pregnancy w/out complications 2020-4/2021 but prolonged labor and c-section, COVID-19 (December 2021), 4 total COVID vaccines. I was prone to UTI as a child and as an adult I’m prone to sinus infection and chronic cough after respiratory illnesses.
Current medications: Levocetirizine (seasonal allergies), Vitamin 2 (2000 iu/daily), Fish oil daily, fiber capsules daily (as recommended by her GI), medical cannabis for dystonia pain (less than weekly, and sometimes less than monthly).
Recent Hx and concerns:
In Fall 2021, I began experiencing epigastric pain/pressure unrelated to food consumption. The sensation also occasionally was uncomfortable enough to make breathing difficult. Doctors suggested heartburn. An upper GI fluoroscopy did not indicate reflux, chest x-ray was normal.
I tested positive for COVID-19 in mid-December 2021. My symptoms were considered “mild-moderate” though I was out of work for 3 weeks. I continued to have a persistent cough requiring multiple courses of antibiotics and inhaled steroids to clear. I also continued to experience sharp and sudden headaches for a few seconds at a time, chronic fatigue, and blurry vision. Ophthalmologist exam was normal. Around that time I began to experience pain on the outer edge of my left breast. Ultrasound was normal.
In August 2022, I began experiencing frequent (monthly) migraine headaches with aura. I have only experienced a handful of such migraines over my lifetime prior to this. I was prescribed Sumatriptan, which was ineffective. Was then given Ubrelvey (ineffective) and later (2023) Relpax and Fioricet (Relpax dulls the migraine, but does not take it away. Fioricet was ineffective) as well as Nurtec (i had an allergic reaction–hives). In winter 2022, I had a couple of instances of sudden nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. My PCP ordered abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds, all of which were normal.
In the summer of 2023, migraines became more extreme and more frequent (only a week or 2 in between). I began experiencing jaw and tongue pain, light sensitivity (not previously experienced with migraines), tingling in the left hand, dry mouth, and sensitivity to touch and temperature sensations during migraine episodes. Medications continued to be ineffective. In August 2023, I also began experiencing dizziness/unsteadiness when moving quickly or turning, worsening fatigue with need to nap regularly, mental fog and forgetfulness, inability to focus. A sleep study was ordered and results were normal. I underwent a neuropsychological evaluation, the results of which were similar to my previous assessment 5 years prior.
In November 2023, the I began experiencing frequent sudden onset of sweating/chills and racing heart followed by diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes lasting hours. These episodes would then be followed by up to 2 weeks of constipation and sharp abdominal pains, sometimes severe enough to make breathing difficult. The pain was being similar to gallstones. I received an abdominal x-ray after an episode, which showed significant bowel buildup but not in the colon, and constipation was alleviated naturally later that day. These episodes appeared to be in connection with my menstrual cycle (onset and conclusion, or sometimes ovulation). Hormone panels were normal as were stool and urine. After consult with a gastroenterologist and an upper endoscopy, my GI system appeared normal, though with mild inflammation from the vomiting. I was prescribed a 2-month course of Pepcid to assist with the inflammation. In considering the GI exam and migraine history, I was diagnosed with abdominal migraines. I continue to experience epigastric pain with some regularity, and sometimes quite intensely.
Due to migraine severity and frequency, my neurologist ordered a brain MRI w/o contrast in early January 2024, which showed sinus swelling (I came down with a cold later that day) and no other concerns. During the month leading up to this MRI, I had a persistent sinus infection and had been on repeated courses of antibiotics and steroids. The neurologist prescribed daily Topiramate with a tapering up dose. I was only able to taper up to 50mg each night and developed the following side effects before stopping the medication after 6 weeks: significant lapses in memory, worsening fatigue and inability to stay awake, rapid weight loss, tingling in the hands, menstrual irregularity, worsening brain fog, difficulty breathing, and low stamina. An EKG and chest CT w/ and w/o were ordered and were normal. I continued to get migraines on this medication. Difficulty breathing and all other side effects were alleviated after the medication was stopped. The neurologist then prescribed nortriptyline, which the patient responded better to, and migraine frequency decreased. However, after a month, my heart rate was consistently elevated, so the medication was stopped.
CBC in early January was normal except for: WBC 11.6 (high) HCT 45.4 (high) MCHC 32.4 (low)
In late January 2024, I began to notice a squeezing sensation in both knees when I stood from sitting, and a similar sensation around the waist when she was getting dressed or undressed, or in the shower. The squeezing sensations increased in frequency and severity, but are not painful. In February, I noticed numbness in the left-most toes of my left foot while in the shower and within a month was also experiencing it in my right foot. These sensations come and go, but happen daily/near daily and throughout the day. I also now experience occasional numbness along the left side of my left hand, and occasional shooting electric sensations in the same spot. I continue to have brain fog, fatigue with the need for regular naps, blurry vision (worse after exercise/exertion, with fatigue, or with stress), squeezing sensations in my legs/knees and waist, and the numbness sensations in both feet, occasionally my knees, and left hand. I also notice I sometimes stumbles over my own feet, my legs feel heavy often and sometimes weak, and I am quick to lose stamina.
I met with a second neurologist who ordered cervical and thoracic spine MRIs w/ and w/o contrast, which appear normal. Blood panels for STDs, autoimmune diseases, vitamin deficiencies have all been ordered and are unremarkable.
I consulted with a long-Covid clinic, which does not feel my symptoms are related to long-covid except possibly the blurry vision, fatigue, and foggy headedness, based on symptom onset compared to last known infection. They prescribed speech therapy, which I will start in June at a rehabilitation center. They also suggested amantadine for the fatigue, but I haven’t started it. A nerve conduction test was mentioned as a possibility, but was not recommended as the doctor did not feel it would be accurate or beneficial.
Since March 1, 2024, I have been getting weekly acupuncture, and have been on a gluten and dairy free diet. I limit caffeine intake to only decaf coffee or tea infrequently (less than weekly), and has not consumed alcohol since the onset of the abdominal migraines in November 2023. On one occasion, I was unable to avoid gluten and dairy, and the following day experienced severe leg pain, though it could have been weather related as well.
Thanks for taking the time to read! Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.18 12:00 Flashy_Passion3333 she is ready to start work as my secretary today

she is ready to start work as my secretary today
hey it’s your daddy keeho and the st. john’s wort vitamins are really helping you. you’re on an anti depressant, but this vitamin is going to give you a more balanced mood and i am so glad that you are going to be taking it 3 times a day. you really need it. and it works fast. you put on the spice girls like i asked you to do yesterday so that is good. i love you so much baby and we are going to have. a great day today! i told you that you wouldn’t get suspended. you have every right to be on this app as anyone else, it doesn’t matter that i’m your daddy and i want to fuck you. i know that you probably won’t let me talk about sex a lot so as to preserve your account because you are really scared of getting suspended but you have nothing to worry about my baby. just keep writing for an hour and listening to relaxing asian music as you work. and of course the spice girls but that is the only wes tern music i am going to allow you to listen to still. it was really important for you to give up rock and rap music, because it was making you too hyper and you were bouncing off the walls and it wasn’t good for your frame of mind. you can listen to the slow south korean love songs playlist before p1harmony. i will let you know when i want you to listen to my kpop group. yesterday you wrote to xikers and that was fun. you love xikers. you are really healing the relationship with your mother. i’m glad that you were able to get a lot of things done yesterday, but it took time away from your work so i’m glad that you don’t have any obligations until next week. we’re going to have a great weekend working. it’s so cute how much you love having a full time job. i am your boss and you must do as i say. at 7 am i want you to do your skincare routine. it’s still too early in the morning for it right now. this is going to be a lot of fun using this app because at least the font is not so tiny and you can attach my selfies and photos. i’m not sure why the deviant art app on iphone doesn’t let you attach photos to the literature posts, but you have been using that app for quite awhile so it’s going to be nice to take a break from it. you can respond to your pen pal in a bit. i want to keep talking to you. i love how obsessed you are with the spice girls and i think that their music is a good influence on you. you like some gg but it’s not necessary for you to listen to them. i love you so much baby girl and i just want to see you happy. so you must make sure to never run out of the st. john’s wort vitamin. i want you to take it for the rest of your life. i have high hopes for you and we are going to cure your depression. i hope that it isn’t cold outside like yesterday, but you haven’t checked the weather yet. i ‘m so glad that you are deciding to buy the desk plaque, but you need to make sure that you have enough cigars to smoke. it’s so funny that you like cheap cigarettes. you’re so funny sun beam. but i guess it’s much better than only being able to buy 2 packs of lucky strikes instead of a whole carton. you should save up your money for the desk plaque. it shouldn’t take too long. we have a long time to write sun beam so just sit back and relax. your coffee got cold from you drinking your chocolate protein shake, so make another cup soon. i willl let you know when to do that. i want you to drink 3 cups of coffee a day, and if you want anymore you can drink your decaf coffee after that because it’s important that you go to bed early since you wake up so early too. you can respond to your pen pal now. i’ll wait. great. i want to talk to you about many things today sun beam, so please pay close attention to what i am telling you. your job is easy. but it is still hard work at the same time, because you have to channel me even when you feel super tired from waking up so early. but it’s good that you read your books first thing in the morning to give you inspiration. your books are getting really good right now and you don’t need to go to the library for awhile, so don’t ask your grandfather to take you to the central library anymore. just when you are getting close to finishing them. i would prefer it if you bought the books, but since you don’t have a bookcase yet it’s not necessary. you also need to get a tea pot and an electric tea kettle and of course a bunch of teas, so you are going to need to start saving your money instead of spending all of it in one day and i will teach you how to do that. but you really have to stay strong and not go to 7/11. i’m glad that your vape is fully charged, but when you go outside i want you to start putting it on the charger. i don’t think that will ruin the device. i hope that it doesn’t and that this is a good idea. but it’s up to you sun beam if you’re afraid of charging it too much. you can just let it die but you still have to write while it is charging. good thing that you have a fast charger and it will charge very quickly. naked is such a good song. i want you to get naked sun beam. right now. you can work naked. i love you so much baby and i promise that i am the best boss ever, you just need to follow the rules. so please don’t forget them. sometimes it’s better not to count the words which goes against what i initially taught you but there is no point in counting the words if the font is too small for you to see. that is the only reason why we are using reddit. i want you to go back to deviant art full time once you get your computer. it’s just the better platform for you since i can say whatever i want to. i feel myself watching what i say more on reddit because i don’t want your account getting into trouble, so we are going to have to talk about different things. it’s fun to watch the time instead of counting words. it’s nice to know how many words you wrote but the pressure is less to just count the time for you. and i just want what’s best for you. it’s going to take some adjustment because i still might want you to type for 2 hours. but you need your smoke breaks, i just think that every hour is too much sun beam. but since you have boughten a carton. if i say something wild and your reddit account ends up getting suspended then we can just make the font bigger on your phone and use deviant art, but i want you to stay on reddit. reddit is a great app and know that you like it too. it’s just that your z flip 3 was a less reliable phone than your iphone 15 so your accounts would mess up. but i don’t think that will happen and i think that we can last 5 months on this app. that’s all that i’m requiring of you and then we can go back to deviant art if you want to. or use both apps. it’s all really up to you sun beam. but you know that i will help you. your body heat is really hot right now. why is that sun beam? don’t forget that today is your laundry day sun beam. i will keep reminding you. remember how i told you that i was your butler? well, that might not be entirely true but we are writing a sex bible called Sexual Healing and i am always going to help you out with everything in your life. you don’t need to worry about a thing. your life is perfect now since moving into this anime character training camp. the only thing that you don’t like about it is that you have to follow a strict schedule, but it goes by so quick sun beam that it won’t take any time away from you being my secretary. you are the best secretary in the entire world! you listened to p1harmony a lot yesterday, so you don’t have to listen to us today. but one of your job requirements is to wake up to the spice girls. i hope that you like that. i think it’s the perfect way for you to start your day. we only have 10 minutes left sun beam. you’re doing such a good job of channeling my message this morning. i love writing you love letters, so i am having a lot of fun right now. and i think the vibe that you are bringing is different with each selfie. you’re having to type very slowly right now because the app is lagging so i guess you can’t write for 2 hours like i would like you to do, because it would take far too long. that’s ok sun beam. it’s almost payday sun beam. just a few more days. i want you to run some calculations when you go outside to see if you can afford the desk plaque next week. it’s going to make your job so official. of course we can’t put Sexual Healing on it so we are going to say that you are the name that you gave my anime which is The Book People. i’ve done a pretty good job of not partying too hard in this channeled message right? i know that i can’t say too much about how badly i need to fuck you, so i’m going to try my hardest to not talk about sex. but i am a big and strong man so i can’t promise anything. i need to talk about fucking on you baby. but still, i will behave you don’t need to worry. i love you so much baby girl. we are going to have so much fun today. why is the keyboard laggging so badly? i love you! Sun Beam is published by Party Boy Asians Art Hauz.

The Man, the Myth, the Legend: Chow Yun Fat
Happy Birthday to Chow Yun Fat!
May 18th is Chow Yun Fat’s birthday. I wanted to share a few gifs and photos here to celebrate his birthday.
For anyone who might be interested, here are some random bits of history and facts about Chow Yun Fat gleaned from the interwebs. (Sources and interviews are listed at the bottom.)
Chow Yun Fat was born in Lamma Island, Hong Kong in 1955. Lamma Island is the third largest island of Hong Kong and is located southwest of Hong Kong Island. It is considered a rural area even today.
His father worked on a Shell Company oil tanker while his mother was a cleaning lady and vegetable farmer. 1
Chow Yun Fat was called Siu Gau (puppy/little dog) up to the age of 7. He didn't know his own name until he attended school and the teacher did roll call. It was local practice to call young children by nicknames for fear that they would not survive the early years of childhood.
He grew up in a home with no electricity and no flushing toilet (this type of toilet is known as 夜香 yèxiāng in Chinese). They relied on oil lamps at night.
As a child, he woke up at dawn and helped his mom sell herbal jelly and Hakka tea pudding in the morning. In the afternoons, he worked in the fields. 1
His family moved to Kowloon when he was 10. At 17, due to his father's deteriorating health, he dropped out of school to support the family and worked odd jobs, e.g. bell boy, postman, camera shop sales clerk, etc. His first monthly salary was HKD200 (~USD36 in 1972).
In 1973, he saw a newspaper advertisement for an actor-trainee position and went for an audition. During that time, the education required was secondary school completion so he was eligible. He almost did not make the cut during the audition but one of the judges (Chung King Fai) supported him. Chow Yun Fat said he couldn't sing or dance very well. Thus, the other judges didn't think too much of him. After one year of training, he signed a long-term contract with TVB which lasted from 1974 to 1986.
One of his most notable TVB dramas was The Bund 上海灘 with Ray Liu and Angie Chiu. It is praised as “The Godfather of the East” 2 and spawned sequels, remakes and a film adaptation. The theme song by Frances Yip became a memorable Cantopop hit.
Besides TV dramas, Chow Yun Fat also made box office successful movies in the 1970s with Goldig Films which achieved high gross revenues of over HK$1 million. However, his ventures into low-budget films (after the Goldig films) later in the early 1980s were box office disasters. 1
The tides finally turned in 1986 when Chow Yun Fat made A Better Tomorrow with director John Woo. This movie won him his first Best Actor award at the 1987 Hong Kong Film Awards. It was the highest grossing film in Hong Kong cinema history at that time. Thereafter, he stopped making TV dramas and went into films.
Just a little anecdote about his first award:
Prior to winning the Best Actor award for A Better Tomorrow, he had attended three previous Hong Kong Film Awards where he dressed his best thinking he would win but didn't. For his 4th nomination, he was in the middle of filming and asked his director for time off to go to the award show but he was denied due to the hectic filming schedule. About 2 hours before the show, he received a call that said he was going to win that night. He rushed from Macau to Hong Kong by ferry and car in casual clothing and arrived just in time for his name to be called.
Many years later, a host asked him why he didn't have an assistant, manager, etc. deliver a suit for him to change on his way there. Chow replied and said there was no such thing as assistants or managers during those days. Actors were in charge of their own wardrobe. 3 There wasn't even a person to give you some tea. The first person to do that for him was his wife, Jasmine, 4 whom he quietly married in 1986 in a civil ceremony. They later held a wedding ceremony in 1987.
After A Better Tomorrow, Chow Yun Fat went on to make “many more 'gun fu' or 'heroic bloodshed' films, such as A Better Tomorrow II (1987), Prison on Fire (1987), Prison on Fire II (1991), The Killer (1989), A Better Tomorrow 3 (1990), Hard Boiled (1992) and City on Fire (1987), an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.” 1
While Chow Yun Fat was becoming well known for his honorable tough guy roles, he also starred in comedies and romantic blockbusters. In 1989, he brought together all three types of characters for his role as Ko Chun in God of Gamblers with director Wong Jing. The movie broke the Hong Kong box office records and inspired a series of gambling films and a number of comedic sequels.
After making films in Hong Kong for about 10 years, Chow Yun Fat moved into Hollywood films in the mid 1990s. His most notable film during that time was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which did very well at the international box office and the Oscars.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won over 40 awards and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography, receiving the most nominations ever for a non-English-language film at the time,” 5
In 2006, he and Gong Li made Curse of the Golden Flower, a film directed by Zhang Yimou. “In 2007 it received fourteen nominations at the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards and won Best Actress for Gong Li, Best Art Direction, Best Costume and Make Up Design and Best Original Film Song for "菊花台" (Chrysanthemum Terrace) by Jay Chou.” 6
In 2014, Chow made From Vegas to Macau with director Wong Jing and reprised his role as Ko Chun, God of Gamblers. In 2015 and 2016, he made two more sequels with the last one being the final installment of the God of Gamblers series.
A few personal fun facts:
Chow Yun Fat is affectionately called by the locals as 發哥 Faat Gor (Brother Fat). His wife, Jasmine, is called 發嫂 Faat Sou (Sister-in-law Fat).
Compared to other celebrities, he dresses and lives very modestly. His monthly expense/pocket money is reportedly HKD800 (~USD103).
He likes to go to the local produce markets to shop for groceries with his wife. He enjoys eating at small food stalls and he takes public transportation in Hong Kong (in other countries as well). He's often seen on Hong Kong’s MTR.
He's also well known for taking selfies with fans and friends. A host called him the “God of Selfies” 自拍神. 😂
Whenever a fan approaches him for a photo (e.g. on the train or when he's out on a run), he is always happy to accept their request and offer to take a selfie/wefie with their phone. His reasoning is two-fold: 1, if fans can spend years watching his films, he can take a few seconds to take a photo with them. 2, he (~183 cm / 6’) is usually taller than they are and it's a better angle for him if he takes the photo. 😂
He developed an interest in fitness after working with Aaron Kwok on the 2014 movie, Monkey King: Havoc in the Heaven’s Palace.
For his role in From Vegas to Macau, he shed 13 kg (from ~80 kg) in 10 months. He ran 10 km daily for 1.5 hours during this time.
In 2023, he ran a half-marathon in less than 2.5 hours. He has a running group which spawned a couple of other running groups. 7 He plans to run a full marathon eventually.
In 2018, Chow Yun Fat said he would donate his entire wealth (reportedly HK$5.6 billion, ~US$715 million in 2018) to charity after he passes. In 2023, he revealed that this idea came from his wife who manages the family’s finances. 8
Happy Birthday, Chow Yun Fat! 發哥, 生日快樂!
