2018.11.01 02:36 FieldElbow Gold Pass full season report: Kings island edition

Hello I decided it would be fun to do a full season trip report for Kings Island. I am a Cincinnati resident, only live 15 minutes from the park. This is my first year with the gold pass; I also had the season dining plan. I grew up going every couple of years, but none of that compared to having a season pass. Having a season pass spoiled me in terms of wait times, I never tolerated waiting more than 20 minutes for a coaster; I always knew I would be back within a couple of days.
I was late to the coaster game, was scared of them until I was 15 or so. I only have 31 credits, spread between KI, cedar point, Kennywood, and Disney. Last time I was at CP disaster transport was still a thing. Forgive me if I don’t use proper lingo, I do love this sub though and realizing how die hard people are for coasters. It is very endearing and makes me want to expand my “coaster pallet.”
Anyways for the 2018 season I got in 30 visits. The best time of the year was when the park first opened for full weeks, the park was always dead and I’d ride Mystic 4 times in a row within 30 minutes. I usually avoided Fridays and Saturdays. I often went during the week after getting off of work, get in at least 5 – 10 solid rides and a meal.
I’m breaking the trip report into 3 parts: The food, other misc. rides and of course the coasters. If you don’t give a crap about the food go past, but I thought it would be fun and I enjoy writing so scroll past if need be.
THE FOOD
The all season dining plan included 2 meals per visit 4 hours apart.
The GOOD
Tom & Chee always delivered a solid grilled cheese, you really can’t go wrong with grilled cheese right?
Skyline, I’m from Cincinnati so you can pry skyline from my cold, dead hands.
La Rosas, I mean…its pizza.
Chick fil a, always a good choice. Would never pay for it for real though, a meal is around 17 dollars in the park.
I honestly thought that there was more good, I’m not a picky eater theme park food can just be rather dismal.
The BAD
Panda express, as you walk through action zone you can smell the delicious wafts of pseudo Chinese food, but don’t let the smell fool you. It is pretty flavorless, but the worst part is the weird meat. Weird meat is weird..yea. Chances are you’d get the weird piece with some hard bit in it and you throw the rest out because your brain has told you to run the fuck away.
Reds hall of fame grill, I wanted to love this place but those damn Saratoga chips are just hard bits of potato cooked to a surly dark brown. The burgers or chicken were normally lukewarm, and again the weird meat.
Hanky Pankys Mexican comida, chipotle rip off but not a successful one.
Coney BBQ: Kings island’s famed new restaurant. The sides were okay, the meat was dry, and the only bbq sauce for miles was KRAFT. Lame excuse for BBQ.
Okay enough about weird meat. DM me for more weird meat stories. (please don’t)
Miscellaneous Rides
Boo blasters: I don’t care how old I am I will always ride this when its 90 degrees out and I want to reminisce about when it used to have Scooby doo.
Delirium: Was terrified to ride this, was pleasantly surprised by its lack of intensity. Best seats were the ones where you got to stare straight at the ground at the highest peak.
Scrambler: A favorite of mine, it always nice to slam into my SO after a stressful day. Wow that sentence sounds risqué.
Windseeker: Rode this damn thing once all season. I rode it during the firework display at the end of that day. The fireworks were RIGHT THERE. It would have been a glorious ride if I didn’t feel like I would surely die any moment.
Monster: I do love this ride. I do not love the operations of this ride. Sitting in a black pod for 10 minutes while they load/unload at an awkward position was never fun.
Dodgem: Who doesn’t love bumper cars? I always felt especially skilled when I did donuts for the entire ride. I felt less cool when I snapped back to reality and realized I am in fact not a stunt car driver when the ride ended.
Shake, Rattle, & Roll: A favorite of my SO, rode it most visits. It’s a fun relaxing thing with cool views of Vortex.
Surf doggy dog: I don’t care if this ride is in kiddy land, I love it.
***If you wanted to skip all of the above nonsense look here*\*
THE COASTERS
Finally the coasters…..ordered from least to most favorite.
Firehawk (RIP) will not be in this list because I was too big of a pussy to ever ride it.
11. Invertigo: Rode once all season, this coaster was pretty much a nonentity to me. I never considered riding it, I hate the feeling of being pulled up and released.
10. Racer: Rode once all season for nostalgia reasons, but it wasn’t really thrilling or fun enough for me to spend my time on. I feel maybe a little ashamed that I only rode it once. Racer doesn’t deserve that shade from me.
9. Backlot Stunt Coaster: Fun little coaster, the launch was the best part. Always ended up feeling slightly nauseous when I got off, only ride in the park that made me nauseous.
8. Banshee: Damn it I wanted to love this coaster. Rode quite a few times throughout the season, was also my first season on it. I went on Banshee expecting it to become one of my top 3 in the park. It looks so beautiful, huge elements, beautifully colored and themed….but it was missing something. I am far from a coaster expert, so I do not know why I did not love it. I felt slightly disoriented when riding, never really knew which element was approaching. Front seat rides gave me a slightly better experience. That cobra roll at the end though, top notch.
7. Flight of Fear: I love that the theming has not changed and they still use CRT TV’s in the queue. I have memories of waiting through the entire FOF queue and hearing the story 20 times before getting on. Love the launch, love the loops…my favorite part is in the middle of the ride there is a slight reprieve in the intensity and it feels like you are circling the coaster. The ending corkscrew broke my neck every time, usually couldn’t ride this multiple times in a row.
6. Diamondback: This one always brought out my affinity for being a little bitch. The lift hill scared me; I always felt so much apprehension before boarding. It does not help that the lift hill is straight out of the station. Once I got past the lift though, it was always an excellent ride. Gotta love that airtime. Best seat is the back, nothing like getting ejected over that initial hill. (Is that what it’s called?? Ejector?) Also in the back seat if you hold out your arms during the splash element you get a little bit of water on your arms, very cool. Also always enjoyed leaning out of my seat to the side during the half ass helix, cool feeling.
5. Bat: I love this coaster, always rode front seat. I loved seeing the car disconnect from the lift at the top, such a weird sensation. Suspended coasters are wonderful gems, so fun. Some days would ride this 3 times in a row. I wish I could say more except that it’s just FUN.
4. Adventure Express: Fantastic night ride, really feel like you’re zipping along and who doesn’t love pitch black tunnels. Adventure express forever.
3. Mystic Timbers: The most “rideable” coaster in the park in my opinion. Could ride this 10 times over and never get sick of it. My only complaint is I am always sad when it is over because it seems so quick. You really zip along with pops of airtime throughout. I love the front seat in the dark.
2. Vortex: Yes it is rough, but once you find a way to make it rideable it is fantastic. I am short so I force myself to push my feet against the car so my head pokes up enough so that it is not slamming on the restraints. Front and back seats are completely different rides. Front gives a sense of slow motion at points, back feels so fast. I love going upside down so this is the coaster for me. That batwing though…ouchy.
1. THE BEAST: It lives up to its name, it truly is a beast. The only ride in the park where I feel like I could die at any moment. Always waited for the front seat. So many things to love, from the infamous night ride to that first drop where it feels like you are plunging to hell. And the helix, oh boy that helix, my single favorite element of any coaster ever. The plunge into the helix especially in the front seat staring right into that tunnel, you start getting faster and faster and when you think you’ve reached the top speed...you’re wrong…something releases and you feel like the damn thing is about to fall apart and then you slam into that helix…it hurts so good, your body slams into that car. I could go on and on but if you’ve rode it you know. Also don’t have time for the party poopers who complain about the rough ride…that’s part of the fun of it. The Beast is legendary and deserves all the notoriety it gets.
Well if you read all of that nonsense I applaud you, if you disagree or agree or just want to say “hey you did a thing”, please do.
