2024.05.14 01:11 Typical_Gap_7705 30[M4F] #PA - it’s been awhile…

I’ve never been a “girlfriend guy”, if you know what I mean. I’ve always had an independent streak, and no problem being alone. My past relationships didn’t exactly blossom. Love and vulnerability are scary. Recently, I’ve discovered something scarier: loneliness.
Also, dating at 30 lol…
So here I am, looking for something real on the internet, and if you’re reading this, so are you. God help us.
A little about me: I’m a musician. I play the drums and some keyboard. Love the outdoors, but I’m not a huge fan of travel. I guess one of the (only) perks of living in PA is that Mother Nature is right at your doorstep! I’d really like to get into bicycling; there’s some great trails around me. You know anything about it?
I’m a huge tv/movie buff, not in an annoying snooty way, but more of in an appreciative way lol isn’t it so cool that we have the oldest human tradition of story telling literally on demand at our fingertips?! I like all genres - I’d love to share favorites with you!
I’m a huge sports fan, particularly soccer and football. Go Union/Go Birds. As far as music goes, I like most everything, from Slipknot to Glasper. And my food, I like it spicy. Very spicy.
Uhh what else? Right - what I look like. 5’11, white, brown hair, well groomed beard, not fat, not skinny. I’ve been told my best feature is my blue eyes. Happy to trade pics or FaceTime or whatever.
What am I looking for in you? Shit idk lol I’d be surprised if this even gets me any messages. But if it does, I’ll guess I’ll see you there!

2024.05.14 00:54 OptimisticMangoo 30[F4R]NY/USA-Are you Rengoku? Because you set my heart ablaze

https://voca.ro/13E7gPgqciEi
I don't think I have super high expectations when it comes to dating but there are certain traits and people that I'm attracted to. To be very straightforward, I'm a woman of color (South Asian) and prefer dating other people of color (any). Growing up as a brown immigrant in certain parts of NY was definitely eye-opening. Apparently, I look racially ambigious since people have hurled slurs for every race towards me lmao It's just been a lot easier for me to connect with other POC with the things I have been through. I think it's also important for me to connect with someone who has similar values. On a political spectrum, I am a leftist and would much prefer my partner to share similar ideologies. In regards to my personality, I have been often described as someone who is full of life/bubbly/optimistic. I love laughing a lot but I love to make others laugh more. It's definitely difficult for me to give up on people so expect me to stick around for a while.
I like someone who is playful and has a good sense of humor. There's a lot of shitty things going on at the moment, so being with someone who can make me smile and laugh often would be a blessing. Rest assure that I'm not looking for a distraction or a therapist, but I hope we could be each other's best friend. I don't mind flirting here and there, but I prefer a love that blossoms slowly over time. But out of everything I have wrote, the most important thing and the characteristic I value/seek the most is someone with high emotional intelligence. Empathy and healthy communication goes a long way.
Im not the most knowledgeable so I love meeting people with different life experiences, different skills, and different interests/hobbies whom I can learn from. Surface level conversations and friendships can be nice for a few days or so, but I cherish those who are not afraid to be vulnerable and to be their authentic self. I'm a pretty open book myself. I think my biggest strength, despite being called foolish for it, is my ability to open up to others. Sure, I had people use it against me before but I really like this part of me. I think it helps me form a sincere connection with the people around me whether it's friends, coworkers, or clients. What you see is what you get, the good and the bad.
In regards to my interests, I am very passionate about social and mental health issues. I am in a MSW program and my dream is to work as a hospice social worker. I like to read a lot of books around those topics but I am a fan of fiction too specifically magical realism from authors like Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I also like to game but I am a console player and right now I am just sticking with OverWatch, Final Fantasy series, and occasionally bullying Real Madrid fans on FIFA. I also have a thing for tattoos and graffiti. Feel free to send me a chat request if any of this catches your interest.

Training

I've been shooting for the half marathon since around Thanksgiving this past year from having never really been a runner (the closest I got was when I signed up for cross country in 7th grade in the summer, then got so scared of embarrassment and pain that I was crying for my parents to take me out of it lol). Probably something to unpack there, oh well! Not too stressed about it now :)
My girlfriend's mom has been a huge role model for me since she restarted in 2020 and was really supportive when I started out on C25k and beyond. My weekly training ended up being mostly 3 days of running leading up to the 10 miler race with around 16 - 20 miles per week, but I realized that I'd love to increase how many days I'm running a week and started to slowly add in 2 mile days on tuesdays and/or thursdays to begin that habit for the last couple of weeks before Pittsburgh. I don't think these had any tangible benefits for PGH, but it was a big mental help as I could tell I wanted to continue the positive benefits I've seen from running into higher mileage and a long term hobby.
It was super cool to be able to have done the Cherry Blossom 10 miler with her and my dad out in DC as a training run, and it was there that I pleasantly surprised myself - I had thought that I'd be able to hang on at around an 11 minute pace for that, but my dad, who has run something like 7 marathons, paced me and helped me to not go out too quick. This meant that my pace for the 10 miler was around 10:30 and it felt really comfortable, so I wanted to set that as my goal pace for Pittsburgh!
The last 4 -5 weeks before Pittsburgh went super well and I was able to practice fueling with regular long runs that got up to 12 miles the week before. This was probably a mistake since I then went out and partied hard at an open bar my Grad school hosted, but it was really good for me mentally to have gotten near the race distance. I took off the week before as a small taper and dealt with a fair amount of nerves that I had done my longest run too close to the race (which tbf I did).
I flew in through Detroit, and spent the days leading up to the race having to unfortunately get up way too early and had a bit of a sleep debt, but thankfully the excitement from the race kept me afloat! I met up with my brother, dad, and girlfriend's mom who were all running and we had a blast the day before the race at a brewery the night before, and we got to meet up with my cousin and her husband and hang out with their menagerie of 2 cats and 2 dogs.
Slept great, and woke up with plenty of time to eat an oatmeal bar and some coffee before heading to the corrals. Unfortunately, my dad put himself in a corral back from my brother and I in Corral C, so it was just us running together since my girlfriend's mom was a corral up from us in corral B. I was definitely jittery on the start line, but it helped that my brother didn't mind me jabbering away to distract myself.

Race

I was so happy to have had my brother running with me! We got some neon bright hats at the expo which helped with some of the rain we got in the beginning and it made us pretty easy to spot for my gf's dad who was there as a spectator. Miles 1 - 6 went really well! Having my brother with me made me make sure to check I wasn't going to quick as he didn't have a watch with him to check our splits. I was amazed at how much adrenaline and the crowd made me speed up, and I felt like we were both constantly needing to cool our speed so that we had some gas left in the tank for the hills I had heard on the back half of the half marathon course, and especially for what I had heard was a large hill at mile 12. We saw my gf's dad between mile 4 and 5, and he was able to catch a great video of us running together :)
Miles 7-10 were where I started to hit some mental challenges. If I'm remembering right, this is where we started to get away from the crowds and headed towards some slightly biggelonger hills. Especially without crowd support, some of the longer slightly uphill grades felt like torture, so we slowed a bit and tried to take it easy through them. This is where I started to regret some of the stomach problems I'd had from using the honey stinger gels in training as it made me really hesitant to use them during the race. I find honey stinger gels to be sickeningly sweet at times, so I had only grabbed some of the gummies they had offered for free at the expo as those had gone down better. However as a result, I didn't fuel anywhere near as often as I know I should/can handle, and I think that definitely contributed to having a tougher time in 7-10.
Thankfully, somewhere in there I was drinking nuun at every water stop and got a banana from a kind volunteer, so I started to feel better. I also loved the gummy worm mile they had set up, as well as all the signs! Every time I saw a sign that made me laugh and smile, I got a huge burst of energy. While I was beginning to feel better, my brother was beginning to get some pretty bad cramping in his legs. I hadn't realized it at the time, but my normal routes for my week have more elevation change than I thought, and I think that helped a lot, whereas my brother, living in MN, had to work to go find hills and elevation to work in. Eventually, he told me to just go on ahead and that he'd meet me at the finish.
Miles 11 - end
I had really wanted to finish this strong, and I'm really glad I took it conservative as a first. I was a bit freaked out at mile 11 because that was the mile marker that begin the big hill everyone had been telling me about. Thing was, I couldn't remember if this was the big one, or if this was just the lead up to the big one at the mile 12 marker! I couldn't help but laugh at myself a bit for forgetting which mile I was in, and kinda just went for it. I knew if I could make it to the top of the hill, I'd be able to turn on some gas and do my best to bomb it down to the finish. I tried to remember what had happened at the Cherry Blossom 10 miler where I had done the same and blown up a bit trying to go quick the last two miles, so I made sure that it was quicker but still sustainable. Thankfully, this bit went really well, and I was able to get a sprint finish at the end to beat my A and B goals.

Post-race

I was pretty toast after hitting the finish line, so I took it slow, got my medal, and made sure to get some electrolytes in me. I was out of it for a bit, but within a couple minutes was feeling pretty good minus some soreness and mild pain in my right knee. I waited by one of the spotter places to meet my brother, and was happy to find out he had gotten through the cramping and came in about 5 minutes behind me. We met up with my gf's parents in the beer garden, and waited there to meet my dad. He found us after about 15 minutes - it sounded like two things had really gotten to him: humidity and the crowding of his corral. He was pretty frustrated with how crowded it was the first 4-5 miles for him as PGH/or the self reported paces for Corral D had a lot of walkers (which is cool btw) who had apparently blocked off a lot of the path (not so cool) making it hard to get around. He was dodging in and out for quite a while, and I wish we had coordinated our reported paces since he easily could have held with my brother and I. Lesson learned for next race!
I was pretty emotional about it as I've always thought of myself as a very unathletic person, and it was really special to be able to share my first half with my family. I had a lot of memories of being a spectator at my dad's marathons, and it was cool to be on the other side of it! Got some great pictures, and we all headed back to the hotel to enjoy a quick lunch at the restaurant that was in the lobby. It was pretty intense to see a lot of the marathon folks still out on the course - it looked like a suffer-fest (but definitely piqued my interest...it's in the cards before my 26th birthday) Got some bourbon and some nachos and couldn't have been happier before we all collapsed for a post-race nap!

2024.05.13 14:38 Lazy_Butterscotch857 Two weddings and two two deaths

My girlfriend and I have been to two weddings this year. The first was for my girlfriends coworker "Jane", the second was for my cousin "Tiffany". They were very different weddings. Jane's was a very chilled out, personalised wedding with lots of little nods to the couples joint interests (their favourite movies as centrepieces/table numbers, video game music for the ceremony etc etc) and we had a blast; the music wasn't for us but they provided plenty of board games and snacks to entertain us in a cosy side room with comfy sofas and a fireplace. Tiffany had what my mother likes to call a cookie cutter white wedding. It was lovely, don't get me wrong, but I've been to a number of near identical weddings over the years and there was nothing about it that stood out as unique or personalised. This about tracks with both Jane and Tiffany. Jane and her husband "Pete" are total nerds who are very passionate about all their hobbies and interests; they play D&D, have frequent cinema dates, always seem to be at festivals and concerts and have more video game consoles than I knew existed. Tiffany is a wannabe influencer type who always keeps up with the latests trends (I play football with her husband "Lance" and during our last match he mentioned she has 11 stanley cups) and has a very carefully curated life on her insta that isn't much like her real life at all.
Despite this, there was one very awful point of similarity at both weddings. A wedding guest died a few days beforehand, both so close to the day that each couple already had their seating arrangement printed and the table placements ready to go. Both incidences involved someone who was already unwell, but took a sudden turn for the worst and died unexpectedly. Jane and Pete lost a friend ("Jeff") and Tiffany and Lance lost Lance's great aunt ("Beryl"). Their responses were also very different.
Jane and Pete left Jeff's seat empty, they placed a picture of him on the table, as well as a bunch of flowers in his favourite colour and a small condolences book that other guests were able to sign (his wife still came to the wedding, I think she just needed a bit of positivity in the wake of all that had happened). They even dedicated a song to Jeff that evening and everyone came together to raise a glass for him and dance with his wife.
Tiffany however, refused to mention Beryl at all. In fact she even banned Beryl's husband from attending the wedding because she didn't want him (or any other guest) to 'bring the vibe down'. She threatened to kick out anyone that mentioned Beryl and basically acted as though she had never existed in the first place. She even reordered her seating arrangement and paid a crazy amount for expedited shipping so she could remove Beryl and her husband from it and had the caterer switch the table up from a 10 person table to an 8 person table (we were at said table, we only found out about Beryl when someone at our table mentioned her and they were shushed into submission by the person next to them - thankfully they filled us in with all the details the next morning at breakfast before Tiffany arrived). Lance and his family are all quite low key people who keep their feelings to themselves, so they went along with all this to avoid an argument. However they were able to sneak in a private toast to Beryl in the courtyard while Tiffany was doing shots with her bridesmaids. Tiffany has not found out about this, so far as I can tell. Of course, from what we've been told, she made a big show about being a grieving relative at the funeral a few weeks later, including lots of selfies of her in all black posing in the churchyard under the cherry blossoms.
While I'm here I'll also tell you all about some of Tiffany's bridezilla moments, or at least the ones I know about. I'm sure there are more.
- Tiffany had to be in every photo, because she was the bride and the 'star of the show'. Lance was not allowed pictures alone with his family or best men despite Tiffany having an insane number taken with her bridesmaids and immediate family (I was not included).
- Beyond immediate family and the bridal party, nobody else was allowed to be in a picture at all. And she banned the photographer from taking pictures of guests during the ceremony.
- One groomsman was almost banned from being in the photos because his face was badly sunburnt after a work trip to Greece. I think they ended up putting makeup on him to hide it...
- She decided to go childfree AFTER agreeing to have her niece be a flowergirl and buying the dress because she didn't like how the little girl looked in HER dress choice.
- She paid for a photobooth for the wedding using the couples savings without telling Lance. The package she paid for was a 'luxury' option, so was VERY expensive.
- No female guest was allowed to have unnatural hair or tattoos on show, and all make up (including nail colour) and hair styles had to be from a pre approved list.
- She didn't mention Lance once in her speech.
As I said, I'm sure there is more, but these are all the bridezilla moments I can think of for now. And as awful as this situation was for Lance, his family and Beryl's husband in particular, I know they really came together in the wake of the wedding and made sure that Beryl was honoured and remembered.

2024.05.13 13:28 Own_Lunch7089 First Date

First Date
My hand is taken from my side,
greedily, stealth like,
the broad daylight attack of the gannet,
my hand now a hostage in his.
Moments before, him, wise eyes and pearly grin,
polished in immaculate shoes,
the first glint of the early cherry blossom,
and me, bathed in the suds of forgetfulness,
drumming silly teenage rhythms on eager strides.
But now as the air between us curdles,
awkward rain alerts me in heavy clumps,
I take from him what is mine,
what will always be mine,
mine until the day its ready for the umbrella

2024.05.13 11:47 everopposing the warp

I've always had my own thoughts on why the Warp is how it is, but ultimately, I think it really does just add up that negative emotions would be dominant in a realm completely shaped by our thinking. The negativity bias is a real thing, we are just simply more inclined to stick to the negativity in our lives as opposed to positivity. Not only that, but if you wanted to boil it down to "good & evil" thinking as discussion of the Warp so often does, just because humans have the capacity for good, does not mean those that do good are exempt from more sinister thoughts. Just because you are kind doesn't mean you are without thoughts of hatred and violence. Just because you are content with life doesn't mean you aren't prone to bouts of despair. This of course swings the other way around as well, but ultimately many of the aspects of perceived negativity that manifest in the Warp are very natural reactions in our minds and one could argue that doing good isn't as much about not having such thoughts, but simply acting against them.
That said, I actually do believe that the Warp does have positive forces within it. It's probably more just that people will only perceive aspects of the Warp that their own minds are drawn to. In my head, the Warp simply responds to the person that calls upon it and the emotions of that person draw out a certain aspect of the Warp towards them. After all, the Chaos Gods themselves tend to seek out souls, whose thoughts align with their way of thinking. The Warp only shows the aspects of itself that reflect the person it seeks, as if it is magnetically pulled towards our thoughts. I always think that the Warp is more receptive to us than anything else. While many of these demonic possessions and mutations the warp enacts on us might seem hostile, they could also be the Warp acting upon a primal want and receptiveness from it's host to open itself to it's influence. To use your favorite Hellraiser analogy, this line of thinking is pretty much epitomized by the "It's yours. It always was" routine. Much like how the Lament Configuration, while it might not have seemed that way to the characters in the story, sought those that wanted it and gave them what the darkest side of themselves wanted, the Warp might simply be responding to such darkness and acting upon the wants of those that call to it, consciously or not.
The idea of the minds of people attracting aspects of the Warp that most align with their thinking would also make sense, considering it is a realm created by our thoughts. Even in our everyday reality, our predisposition and general attitude towards life colours much of what goes on around us and makes us experience the same reality differently. For example, your alarm clock not working in the morning and being late for school or work because of it is something all of us could experience, but everyone will experience the situation differently. Some would be prone to be angry, cursing the useless contraption for not working. Some would feel ashamed of letting such a thing happen. Some would panic, afraid of any potential reprimanding it might lead to. While some could just laugh it off as a peculiar occurrence they might talk about during break time with the lads. When our gut instincts have a tendency towards any of these reactions, it generally flavours most things that occur in our lives and shapes our perception of it.
So where are these positive Warp entities? Honestly? I think they'd just be more subdue by nature and less upfront about how they influence us anyway. It would make sense why extreme feelings of terror, violence or lust would be so forceful and aggressive, but it'd make less sense why a being that is fed from generosity or honor would do things like mutate and possess people. And this isn't even going into whether the Chaos Gods we already have couldn't have the potential to be positive influences to people. Who's to say a blossoming of genuine love between two people couldn't be fueled by Slaanesh? When a person decides to quit their bad habits and start improving their lives, could this not have been inspired by the whispers of Tzeentch? Could a family grieving the loss of a loved one not find peace within the consolidation of Nurgle? Again, I believe the Warp responds to people based on their own mentality. It's just that in such extreme times as the 41st Millennia, we often see the most extreme of circumstances erupt before we see how Cleetus the Catachan guardsmen had a better day, because Tzeentch convinced him to try out a new pair of underwear that helped with his chafing.
In the early 1900's, both Einstein's theory of Relativity and the various quantum phenomena, which would eventually be classified as quantum physics, were brand new revelations to humanity. Since the Renaissance, the natural world had been increasingly explored and described as "If you see it it is real." Copernicus's heliocentric model of the solar system, newtonian physics, thermodynamics, chemistry, these were all things we could observe in some direct manner. We might need lenses like microscopes and telescopes, but it was something we could see.
But then Relativity and Quantum mechanics hit the scientific world like a brick through a window: it shattered preconceived notions of what had been considered true. The recent discovery of radiation (particle) and light waves we can't see (x-rays, infrared, radio), the idea that time wasn't fixed, that space itself can be shaped and molded like clay, these were revelations that shattered many world views. The bottom line was that our senses do not perceive the world as it is: our reality is a thin vernier, a thin layer of ice on which we tread that hides a vast and unknown ocean with laws and phenomena truly alien to our everyday experience.
Enter Lovecraft. A scrawny, racist, classist New England boy from old money, Lovecraft suffered from severe anxiety disorders while having a fascination with the sciences. However, his mind, fraught with trauma and anxiety, did not allow him to study science well enough to truly comprehend the new theories. Still, he trusted the scholars: rich white men, many from prestigious institutions and storied blood lines. And everything they were saying was that reality was a lie. Without the ability to understand deeper, with overwhelming prejudice and terror of the world, he sat down to write about his fears and existential dread.
I think this is what makes his writing, while dated, still resonate. His concepts, fears, and world building continue to reflect the discrepancy between the scientific world and our lived experience. And as new information comes to light, we are faced with more questions. How would Lovecraft react to dark matter and dark energy? 90% of the universe is intangible, aethereal, invisible matter which can only be detected by gravity? Or that the universe is rapidly expanding, all the world's and galaxies moving further apart at quickening speeds doomed to die cold and alone in the black? I'm sure the thought of thinking machines able to emulate human speech and behavior, infinitely more intelligent, and given power over massive amounts of our society would make him soil his pants: the man-made God, AI, a superintelligence. The millions of exoplanets so close to our star it dredged up his fears of alien horrors.
Yeah, his writing may be racist, classist and sexist, but the man spoke to fears still relevant today. That's the basis of 40K's Warp. The existential terror in humanity.

2024.05.13 06:54 infinitlycool FANFIC: Wings Into The Sky Chapter 33 (Important Updates Included!)

An Angel to Us All
Rena Kugimiya, the future mother of the Nakano Quints, was once a famous tennis player during her High School years. She dreamed of going pro and seeing the world, until one huge mistake cost her everything. This is just the beginning of Rena's story.
-----
UPDATE
Once again I apologize that this update took so long since the last one. I've been very busy lately and much of that includes rewriting several scenes throughout this fanfic.
The first thing I want to announce is that I will no longer be uploading chapters of this fanfic onto FFN. I've gotten completely fed up with all their technical issues they keep having and I'm seriously considering moving all my stories over to AO3 and deleting my FFN account entirely.
As for the fanfic the most important change I've made is the date scene with Fuutarou and Nino(Chapters 23-25). Instead of a cherry blossom festival they go to it is now a music festival. The reason for this change was because it never to me to look up when exactly Japanese High School festivals occur. Once I discovered that they happen in September and not January/February as I initiall assumed, I had to go back and rewrite certain. However, that turned out to be a blessing because it gives me a bigger timeline to work with for my Yotsuba spinoff. Apologies to anyone who's been eagerly waiting for an update to that story. I promise that there will be more to come.
Some other changes I've made is that Izumi no longer lives in North Carolina as I initially wrote. She now lives in Texas. The scholarship Yotsuba receives also comes from a Texas university. I'll leave it to you to find out what college it is(Hint: Chapter 27).
Other than editing, the story is mostly unchanged. I just thought it was necessary to explain my long. absence. I'll try to make it less than a habit but depending how life goes I can't guarantee it.
My thanks to everyone who has supported me and my story, even if you don't like everything about it. Stay tuned for the next one!

My yuri manga collection
I am on a mission to collect every yuri title in English! I am doing very well so far. Have a handful of titles on the way. I'm also looking to make some online friends who are just as enthusiastic about yuri as I am. I've been collecting since 2011, my first yuri was Strawberry Panic 🍓

2024.05.12 18:44 Joshh170 Games With The Most Impressive Graphics (long read)

Games With The Most Impressive Graphics (long read)
As video games have continued to grow and evolve as both entertainment and art, the games just keep looking better and better. If someone is playing on a high-end PC or the average console, it's hard not to notice when a game stands out a bit more than the rest.
Whether it is the highest fidelity graphics or just a gorgeous art style (or both), games that look good usually also play well. If that much time gets spent in the graphics department they must have something good elsewhere. Here are the games with the best graphics out there.
Updated on May 12, 2024 by Mark Sammut: Two recently-released games deserve to be spotlighted. One is the latest entry in a long-running JRPG franchise, while the other is a new IP from a Korean studio.
Note:
A few criteria/things to keep in mind:
This article focuses on modern releases and a few post-2000s projects rather than classics from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Genesis, and PS1 eras. As important and industry-pushing as the latter were, visually they are too different from modern releases to compare them.
The games are only loosely ranked since graphical styles vary so much from project to project, and personal preference plays a part.
A 2016 game might be ranked higher than a 2024 one because the former was more impressive when it debuted, even if the latter technically looks better.
1)Lords Of The Fallen Unreal Engine 5 Is Here
Epic's Unreal Engine 5 was introduced in 2020, instantly garnering hype for what it could mean for the industry's future. In 2023, a few notable games that utilize the engine were finally released, presenting early examples of its potential. Remnant 2 and Immortals of Aveum are both visually impressive, and the same could be said for ARK: Survival Ascended.
However, at the moment, Lords of the Fallen is probably the most gorgeous UE5 game, although that could change once titles like Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 are released. While not without its issues, the Soulslike game's graphics are certainly not among them. Axiom is a vast and stunning hellscape, one that has quite a bit of variety. The game's lighting and animations are consistently top-notch too.
2)Bright Memory: Infinite A One-Person Team
Games and their visuals cannot be analyzed in a vacuum. Context and expectations shape somebody's reaction to an experience, and that is certainly the case with Bright Memory: Infinite. Developed by a single developer, Zeng Xiancheng, this first-person shooter originally debuted in 2020 as Bright Memory, a concept that was expanded for a full release in July 2022. While the overall game has plenty of issues, its graphics are undeniably impressive, comparing favorably with higher-budget titles.
There are plenty of gorgeous indie titles, but the vast majority succeed because they do not try to emulate AAA projects. They strive to do their own thing. Bright Memory: Infinite does the exact opposite, and the game proves that it can be done well.
3)Hi-Fi Rush Burst Of Colour
Announced and released out of nowhere, Hi-Fi Rush was perhaps 2023's greatest surprise. Tango Gameworks' action game blends hack and slash combat with rhythm-based mechanics, rewarding players for adhering to the beat. Set in a corporate city run by Vandelay Technologies, the title brings to life a vibrant and bustling metropolis filled with unique buildings and NPCs.
As the campaign is linear, Hi-Fi Rush focuses on creating cool environments and backdrops, two things the game absolutely nails. Quite a few stages are predominantly set within samey corridors and indoor areas, but whenever the action heads outside, Hi-Fi Rush really comes alive.
4)Okami HD An Animated Painting
There aren't many games that have been able to graphically stand the test of time as well as Okami has. Originally released in 2006 on consoles like the PlayStation 2 and Wii, Okami was able to take advantage of its timeless style to make the most out of the hardware it was on.
However, playing Okami on those consoles today shows just how much the original systems were holding it back, which is where the HD version comes in. On the PS4 and Switch, Okami's classical Japanese art style looks absolutely stunning in just about every area of the game.
5)Heavenly Sword Motion Capture Showcase
Most of Ninja Theory's bigger games boast stellar visuals and character designs, however, Heavenly Sword gets the nod because it was the studio's first proper graphical showcase. More impressively, the early PS3 game still looks beautiful today, an achievement that should be largely credited to the project's use of motion capture technology.
The cut-scenes steal the show and could easily pass for a mid-budget animated flick, with Andy Serkis' performance as King Bohan ranking among the best in any era of gaming. During gameplay, Heavenly Sword is also a treat for the eyes and senses, particularly in its lavish environments.
6)Killzone: Mercenary Console Quality On A Handheld System
Regardless of their quality, all the Killzone games are graphical showcases. Despite being a launch title, 2013's Shadow Fall is still among the most visually impressive games on the PS4. As stunning as Guerrilla's mainline entries are, Killzone: Mercenary deserves a special mention due to its hardware.
The PS Vita was and still is a reasonably powerful handheld device, one that could replicate home console visuals to a certain extent. No other title highlighted the console's graphical potential better than Killzone: Mercenary, an FPS that would not have looked out of place on the PS3 or even as a budget PS4 project. The fact it is also a decent game does not hurt either.
7)Super Mario Odyssey It Is Not Always About Realism Or Processing Power
While combining "Nintendo Switch game" with "best graphics" might seem weird, it's hard to argue that Super Mario Odyssey doesn't make the most of the console's limited processing power. With a combination of stylized art and impressive HD, Mario explores several gorgeous landscapes that might inspire players to sit back and think about how far things have come.
Nintendo has always used fantastical art styles to produce charming and timeless games that don't break the bank on processing. Mario has never looked this good, and sequences like the New Donk City music festival allow the game to shine.
8)Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League For All Its Faults, The Graphics Are Not One Of Them
All of Rocksteady's games push the envelope in terms of visuals, and 2015's Arkham Knight still boasts the most impressive rendition of Gotham in gaming. Its visuals have aged magnificently, and the gameplay is fantastic, even if the overall project is not quite on the same level as Arkham Asylum or Arkham City. After an 8-year wait, Rocksteady made its comeback with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League; unfortunately, the Arkhamverse spin-off garnered a very mixed reception. Focusing on looter shooter action in an attempt to be a live-service experience, Suicide Squad is a fairly confused project that does not seem to play to Rocksteady's strengths.
While many elements warrant criticism, and it can be tempting to dismiss the entire project, the game is not without positives. If nothing else, the graphics are generally top-notch, particularly when it comes to the cutscenes and character designs. When the action gets going, the screen can get rather muddled, but it is not devoid of visual flare either. For all its faults, Suicide Squad certainly looks like a proper AAA project.
9)Halo: Reach A Series That Always Pushed Console Graphics To Their Limits
In truth, Reach could be regarded as a stand-in for Halo in general as Microsoft's franchise is consistently pushing console visuals to their limits. In terms of art style, Halo 4 certainly has its fans; when it comes to graphical prowess, Halo 5 and Infinite are unsurprisingly a step above their predecessors. However, Halo: Reach perfected the series' iconic aesthetic of Bungie's era, ensuring the latter's time with the license ended on a high note.
Nowadays, Reach looks its best in The Master Chief Collection, which enhances the visuals in a few subtle but notable ways. That said, the Xbox 360 version holds up well after all these years.
10)Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot At Times, Looks (Much) Better Than The Anime
It wasn't until fairly recently that video games hit the graphical fidelity necessary to be able to fully translate animated shows and films into live gameplay, with recent Dragon Ball games being the most shining examples. 2018's Dragon Ball FighterZ was able to take a page out of Guilty Gear's book to make a stunning 2.5D experience, but gorgeous, fully 3D anime games were still a rarity.
Until Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was released, that is. Taking the Toriyama characters and landscapes that fans know and love, Kakarot turns them into stunning 3D models with some of the most impressive animations and visual effects around.
11)Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga Detailed & Beautiful
Lego projects might not be as graphically intensive as games with realistic visuals, but they have a unique and clean aesthetic that generally complements their gameplay and tone. Although the franchise's IP adaptations are consistently pleasing to the eyes, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga exists on a whole other level. Covering all the main episodes in the sci-fi film series, the game beautifully recreates some of the most iconic locations in Star Wars, creating worlds that are expansive and detailed.
Undoubtedly the most ambitious Lego title, The Skywalker Saga is the full package, and Traveller's Tales' hard work is evident throughout the experience. While very much designed with younger players in mind, die-hard fans are likely to have a blast regardless of their age; in fact, people who are just searching for an action-adventure romp should check this release out.
12)Golden Sun A Gorgeous World To Take On The Go
In terms of raw power, the Game Boy Advance has nothing on the Nintendo DS, let alone something like the Switch; however, that does not mean the classic console's library is devoid of gorgeous games. Golden Sun is a turn-based JRPG set in Weyard, a fantasy world that is refreshingly diverse in terms of environments.
Largely experienced from a top-down perspective, Golden Sun looks like most other old-school JRPGs found on the GBA or SNES, just with its graphics maximized to their full potential. Camelot instilled every town and dungeon with color and personality, while battles come to life with a flurry of effects that are dazzling to behold.
13)South Park: The Fractured But Whole Looks Exactly Like The Show
When adapting an established property to a different medium, concessions usually need to be made. However, exceptions do exist, and South Park: The Fractured but Whole managed to perfectly replicate the show's aesthetic. The RPG looks and sounds exactly like Trey Parker and Matt Stone's legendary animated series, permitting fans to immerse themselves in this world like never before.
Even removed from that context, The Fractured but Whole's visuals are detailed, expressive, and clean. Authenticity did not come at the cost of quality.
14)Shadow Of The Colossus (2018) Majesty In Gaming Form
For the most part, this article focuses on modern games rather than titles that were graphical showcases when they debuted. Shadow of the Colossus both follows this rule and is also an exception; while the PS2 version looks dated, the visuals still retain that same sense of wonder and scale that they had when the game originally came out in 2005.
Bluepoint Games' 2018 remake gives Team Ico's classic a modern makeover, and traversing the Forbidden Land in search of majestic colossi remains as haunting of an experience as it was in the PS2 era.
15)Stellar Blade More Than Just Eve
In the lead-up to its release, Stellar Blade's marketing heavily advertised Eve, its AI protagonist, and her wardrobe. Attractive characters being used to sell projects is nothing new, but their heavy promotion usually suggests a lack of trust in the rest of the game's quality.
Surprisingly, Stellar Blade proved to be way more than just its main character. Shift Up created an exciting action game with Soulslike combat (along with hack and slash influence) that also features surprisingly expansive zones that allow for exploration, side quests, and environmental storytelling. Considering it was created by a smallish studio compared to other PS5 first-party titles, Stellar Blade compares favorably to most of Sony's heavyweights, and it is among the best-looking Unreal Engine 4 games of all time. In fact, it could be confused for Unreal Engine 5.
16)Persona 5 Royal Oozes Style
As hundreds of games use an anime aesthetic, they start to blend together if they do not inject enough personality into their presentations. Persona 5 Royal does not have this issue. Everything about the game screams "stylish," and that holds true for the social sim and dungeon crawling sections of the campaign. The latter take place in diverse Palaces that are generally vibrant, lively, and gorgeous.
The visuals also do a lot of heavy lifting during battles, elevating what is a rather unspectacular turn-based combat system. Outside of Palaces, P5R unleashes players on a small but dense variant of Tokyo, one brimming with tiny details that enhance the experience.
Note:
Persona 3 Reload is quite a looker as well, although its single-dungeon setup restricts variety when compared to Persona 5 Royal 's Palaces.
17)The Last Of Us 2 Gritty Realism & Tremendous Performances
Naughty Dog's games are always on the cutting edge graphically. 2016's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End has barely aged a day since its release, and 2013's The Last of Us was a contender for the most visually impressive game of the seventh generation. Therefore, unsurprisingly, the studio's latest offering, The Last of Us 2, is a powerhouse in the graphics department.
This action-adventure game features realistic visuals and grounded performances courtesy of Naughty Dog using performance capture. Whether players are viewing a rare quiet moment or crawling in the mud to avoid a Clicker, The Last of Us 2 looks incredible. The 2024 remaster enhances the base version even further.
18)Gears 5 Weather Effects & Environments
The newly titled Gears 5 takes a series that has always looked good and elevates it to the next level. The game's campaign takes place across a wide variety of environments, from a jungle early on to a snowy tundra and red desert landscape.
The snowy tundra and red desert are also the locations for the game's more open exploration sections, giving a chance to explore and take in all the scenery. Gears 5's cutscenes are also gorgeous and the high fidelity extends into all the game's other modes.
19)Assassin's Creed Odyssey Packed With Stunning Vistas
Assassin's Creed Odyssey earns its subtitle over the 60-plus hours it takes to mainline the story; in the meantime, players get to appreciate and take in the beauty of Ancient Greece. While the environments don't vary a ton from Assassin's Creed Origins, the extra trees and seas make for some spectacular views.
With the viewpoints, Odyssey never hesitates to point out just how magnificent it looks. Most of the main characters and side characters also look great, which is impressive based on the quantity.
20)Hades Personality & Vibrancy
Supergiant Games has put together some of the greatest indie releases of all time, and the studio's crowning achievement is Hades. The roguelike follows Zagreus' repeated attempts to make the journey from the Underworld to Mount Olympus, a task that proves to be anything but simple for Hades' son.
Hades' visuals are vibrant, thematically consistent, and lively. The game's environments and characters are soaked in mythology and personality, while the particle effects are fantastic and impactful. The only negative is that sometimes there is a bit too much happening on screen.
Note:
Hades 2 arguably looks better than its predecessor, but it is still a work in progress at the moment.
21)Cuphead Perfectly Mimics Classic Cartoons
A unique and eye-catching art style is often more important than sheer graphical prowess, and Cuphead might be the best demonstration of this point. Inspired by cartoons of old, Studio MDHR created a game that uses stunning and dynamic hand-drawn animation to bring to life a colorful world and the beings that exist within it.
Even though they do not get much in the way of backstory, Cuphead utilizes its presentation to get across the personalities of each boss. The art style is also consistent throughout the campaign, allowing for a coherent experience despite most of the characters boasting designs that share very little in common.
22)Horizon Forbidden West Scale & Quality
Guerrilla Games somehow managed to outdo Horizon Zero Dawn with its sequel, despite the latter still coming out on the PS4 alongside the console's successor. Horizon Forbidden West finds Aloy exploring a new area of this setting, one specifically inspired by states and cities like California and San Francisco. The result is a gorgeous and vast world packed with lush natural environments that are home to intricate mechanical beasts.
Like most open-world games, Horizon Forbidden West does not always look absolutely fantastic, but its high points are so impressive that they make the more forgettable moments forgivable. While still a beautiful game on the PS4, this 2022 release is, unsurprisingly, at its best on the PS5.
23)Ori And The Will Of The Wisps Great Use Of Color & Light
Moon Studios' Ori games are some of the best modern Metroidvanias, and they knock it out of the park in nearly every area. They tell emotional storylines that succeed in fostering not only a connection between the audience and the silent eponymous character but also the world they live in. Gameplay-wise, both games have precise and challenging platforming, while Will of the Wisps also introduces combat to the mix. Although a touch polarizing, the latter nevertheless adds an extra dimension to the overall package.
Last but not least, Ori and its sequel are both visually enchanting. The games' use of color might be among the best in the entire industry, and each environment is a work of art. In the world of side-scrollers, not many projects compare favorably to Ori and the Will of the Wisps in any department, including graphics.
24)Demon's Souls (2020) A Beautiful Hell
As mesmerizing as Elden Ring's visuals can be at times, the game's open-world design means they are spread a bit thin; conversely, 2020's Demon's Souls remake consists of almost nothing but stunning areas. Rife with deadly creatures, haunting architecture, and intimidating landscapes, Boletaria is a gorgeous nightmare of a kingdom that is equally likely to leave players in awe or fear.
As a launch title for the PS5, Demon's Souls served as something of a tech demo for the hardware, showing what the next-gen console could accomplish. This is a game that could not exist on the PS4, and even more than 18 months into the PS5's life, Demon's Souls still has some of the best graphics on the system.
25)Ghost Of Tsushima Immersive Open-World
Gazing across Ghost of Tsushima's rendition of the Japanese archipelago is quite the sight to behold, as this highly anticipated title has some breathtaking scenery. Tsushima's main graphical focus is on its world, which ends up feeling just as alive as the characters that inhabit it.
The way cherry blossom petals flow in the highly stylized wind, how the sunset illuminates the beautiful countryside, and the many vibrant colors that contrast the violent gameplay make for one beautiful game.
26)Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Pixar Quality
Similar to 2016's Ratchet & Clank, Rift Apart's animation is on a whole other level. The franchise's most recent entries tend to be compared to Pixar's movies, which is about as high of praise as any game can receive. Utilizing the full power of the PS5, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart matches top-tier cutscenes with gameplay sections that are packed with detail, moving parts, and depth.
Insomniac created lavish and dense worlds that all have unique flavors that make them exciting to explore. When the action gets going and Ratchet or Rivet scoop up bolts, Rift Apart is as smooth as butter.
Note:
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is also visually stunning and represents Insomniac at its best. Rift Apart merits the nod due to being among the first PS5 projects to showcase the console's graphical potential, but Spider-Man 2 is as good-looking of an open-world game as they come.
27)Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch Ghibli Quality
Except for Square Enix, Level-5 is arguably the most consistent JRPG developer in terms of visuals. Yo-kai Watch, Dragon Quest 8, and Dark Cloud 2 are all gorgeous, and the latter's art styles are timeless. Level-5's graphical masterpiece is undoubtedly 2013's Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, although the developer got some help as the game's cutscenes were handled by Studio Ghibli.
The anime studio is well-known for its lavish cinematic productions, and Wrath of the White Witch replicates Ghibli's iconic style splendidly. Even if the cutscenes were ignored, Ni no Kuni would still rank among the PS3's most beautiful games.
28)Resident Evil 2 (2019) – Represents All Modern Resident Evil Games A Remake Done Right
Years of remasters and rereleases have cemented the idea that old games can look better than they did, but not as good as modern ones. Capcom rebuilding Resident Evil 2 from the ground up makes it a modern video game, a fantastic one at that. Leon and Claire have never looked this good and neither have the zombies and monsters terrorizing Raccoon City.
The police station and underground lab look nearly life-like and every scare in the game is extra terrifying with how detailed the monsters are. Even Tyrant looks awesome, in his own terrifying way.
Note:
Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 also look fantastic, but RE2 received the nod as it was the first of Capcom's stint of recent remakes. Resident Evil Village is also stunning.
29)Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) The World At The Player's Fingertips
Microsoft Flight Simulator is a jaw-dropping achievement. The flight sim grants players access to the world, allowing them to plan and take trips to Earth's highest mountains, hottest deserts, and greatest metropolises. The game's scope is impressive, and this ambition is more than matched by its technical prowess.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is arguably the most realistic game of all time, with both the planes and locations authentically mirroring their real-life counterparts to the smallest detail.
30)God Of War (2018) & Ragnarok (2022) A New Era, A New Look
Nothing against the previous installments of God of War, which are all technical showcases in their own right, but the soft reboot of the 2018 sequel and its successor are not only different but also more gorgeous. Exploring the Norse lands to soak up this universe's mythology is spectacular for a number of reasons, including the fact that everything looks great.
God of War captures Kratos and Atreus in a way that gives depth to the former not experienced in previous installments. Unsurprisingly, God of War: Ragnarok maintains the high quality set by its predecessor. Graphically, the sequel does not offer a huge leap forward, but that is a testament to God of War's beauty rather than a criticism of Ragnarok.
31)The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Pushes The Switch To Its Absolute Limit
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom boast vibrant art styles that bring Hyrule to life like never before. However, if someone were to focus on the minute details, they might notice reused or flat textures along with large stretches of empty real estate containing nothing but maybe two enemies and a couple of apples. Compared to some other open-world projects, Nintendo's releases might not be that impressive; however, considering the Switch's underpowered hardware, both games are technical marvels.
Tears of the Kingdom gets the nod as it has more content than Breath of the Wild thanks to the implementation of Sky Islands and the Depths. Pushing the Switch to its absolute limit, the sequel delivers one of the most complete and expansive open-world adventures of all time.
32)The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt A Dark Fantasy Masterpiece In Nearly Every Way
Known for being one of the greatest games ever made, CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3 is phenomenal for numerous reasons. Not all the monsters or gruff characters are a joy to look at because they aren't meant to be, but the sprawling landscapes are constantly killer.
While the console versions look great (not including the Switch port, which is nonetheless impressive in its own right), The Witcher 3 on PC can hit graphical levels that are almost beyond understanding. The game is worth playing for a ton of reasons besides graphics, but looking good is always a plus. The bathtub scene is worth the price of entry alone.
On the right system, Cyberpunk 2077 is also one of the best-looking games ever .
33)A Plague Tale: Requiem A Proper Current-Gen Experience
As the ninth console generation picks up steam, more games will debut that raise the bar for graphics, at least on Sony and Microsoft's hardware. A Plague Tale: Requiem is one of the first games to truly come across as a current-gen experience, an achievement aided by Asobo Studio's decision to not produce PS4 and Xbox One versions.
Boasting brilliant facial animations and photo-realistic visuals, Requiem is awe-inspiring on a technical level. While 2019's Innocence is also a pretty game, Requiem far exceeds its predecessor in this department, particularly when it comes to the presentation of the rats.
34)Forza Horizon 5 Mexico At The Player's Fingertips
As long as Forza games continue to be made they will continue to be the best-looking games on the market. Forza Horizon 5 isn't just one of the greatest racing games of the last few years, but one of the most gorgeous titles to ever be released for Xbox.
While Forza Horizon 4's British setting resulted in slightly homogenous environments, the sequel's Mexico map is far more diverse, offering 11 biomes that showcase different aspects of the country. While the game looks good on the Xbox One, Forza Horizon 5 is unbelievably gorgeous on PC and the Xbox Series X.
35)Alan Wake 2 Cinematic Quality
Alan Wake 2 was a long time coming, and the sequel managed to live up to some rather lofty expectations while catering to both returning fans and new players. Split across two campaigns, the story follows Saga as she investigates a murder case that leads her to an unsettling American town with a peculiar populace. In the meantime, Alan finds himself trying to escape the Dark Place, a haunting realm that twists reality into something menacing but familiar.
Although complementary, the two storylines still feel different from each other, and that extends to their detailed and realistic locations. Alan Wake 2 is a technical work of art built using Remedy's own Northlight Engine, which is also responsible for the equally impressive Control and Quantum Break.
36)Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Ambitious, Epic, & Gorgeous
Generally, most JRPG franchises tend to trail behind other AAA properties in terms of graphics; however, the one constant exception is Final Fantasy. In most generations, Square Enix produces one or two games that push consoles to their limits – Final Fantasy 6 for the SNES, Final Fantasy 7 and 8 for the PS1, Final Fantasy 12 for the PS2, Final Fantasy 13 for the PS3, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the PS4. On the PS5, Final Fantasy 16 and Rebirth are both visually stunning, but the latter gets the nod due to its open-world nature, making for a more impressive final product.
Set after Cloud and company leave Midgar, Rebirth emphasizes this story's world-spanning nature and scale in a way that could not be done with the 1997 original. Even if the open-world filler content might not be to everyone's tastes, the game is consistently gorgeous, and each region of the map has a unique identity that keeps things interesting. The character and enemy models are unsurprisingly flawless, and they are accompanied by high-quality visual effects that are regularly showcased during the fast-paced combat.
37)Half-Life: Alyx The Future Of Gaming?
After more than a decade, Valve finally returned to the Half-Life franchise, albeit with a prequel/sequel rather than a proper third entry. Also, Half-Life: Alyx is a VR game, presumably designed to get people interested in Valve's Index headset. Dropping players in City 17, Alyx not only serves as a showcase of VR technology but is also a proper, substantial addition to the beloved series.
Half-Life: Alyx arguably features the most detailed world in gaming history, and, thanks to virtual reality, one of the most immersive. Although most of the game takes place in underground areas filled with brilliantly designed environments and enemies, Half-Life: Alyx's presentation goes up another level whenever the story heads to the surface.
38)Red Dead Redemption 2 An Era Captured Fully
Red Dead Redemption 2 is arguably the game with the best graphics of all time, although Rockstar's GTA 5 and L.A. Noire would not be bad shouts either. RDR2 is practically a movie due to how detailed and impressive all the NPCs and landscapes look on both consoles and PC.
Not only does every single frame of this adventure look photo-realistic, but RDR2 is also incredibly long and players will never get tired of the scenery. Arthur Morgan looks and feels like a real human being, and the same extends to every other character within the game. RDR2 is nothing short of art.
39)Groundbreaking Games From Yesteryear They Set The Standard
While not quite as regular of a phenomenon nowadays, the '80s, '90s, and early 2000s produced plenty of games that represented the next leap in graphical prowess. Titles like Pong, Asteroids, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, Alone in the Dark, Ocarina of Time, Tomb Raider, Mist, Final Fantasy 7, and Grand Theft Auto 3 were all visual showcases that changed the industry.
Even if some of these projects' graphics have not aged extremely well, that does not diminish their accomplishments or importance. And, plenty of these masterpieces have stood the test of time, especially Nintendo's SNES-era releases.

2024.05.12 18:02 HonestLion9653 AITAH for not wanting to be friends after she broke my heart? Sorry the story is kinda long.

I was with my best friend for six years. Four of which she struggled with severe depression. I am not perfect I had my mistakes. I had never seen or dealt with depression. It was an entirely new plain for me. I struggled with being around it for the first bit of it. I had fallen in love with my best friend, both before her depression hit hard and while it was hitting at its hardest.
I didn’t just fall in love with her beauty. I fell in love with her personality, her humor. We fit. I can still tell when she is actually happy. Her eyes get this shine, and the edges of her smile straighten and take a sharper angle. I think it is the most beautiful thing. You see it at its best when she is surrounded by trees, or finds a bunch of wild mushrooms. In nature she finds the beauty in absolutely anything. The emotional roller coaster of her working through a good book, cause she only reads books she is going to like. Though she will buy any book that has a beautiful cover. She can’t contain herself when talking about it. Every other sentence becomes “You have to read it!” Watching her laugh at herself when she comes up with something witty. The way accomplishments brings her closer to peace than it does ego. I’m not a horror guy, but this woman loves a thrill. Yet she’s always falls asleep to spooky stories. Which I myself had come to enjoy as well. The way she likes to just have her face held. Long story but these are just a few. I could go on for a while. Pages on all the things I love about her.
Not saying that I didn’t have my own issues or mistakes. I made plenty. I started out with the mentality of helping “fix” her. This period of time is the reason that I hate the idea of “fixing” someone. She wasn’t broken. It did take me a good period of time to realize I couldn’t help other than just being present. So my focus became more so just making sure she didn’t feel alone. Going from trying to to fix someone to just being present is a hard switch. So to cope with not being able to help I started working ridiculous hours. Which also took me a while to figure out it was the wrong way of handling it.
Like most who go through a long period of depression, she came out not knowing herself, along with seeing and feeling all of the pain that period of depression caused. Which has to suck. She saw that I had been around through a lot. Seeing the person I love suffer…. Not being able to really help her. All I wanted for a long time was for her to just be ok. I am sure at this point she saw the pain that I had been in. She never wanted to hurt me.
Seeing her come out of it, I wanted to talk about it a little bit. I didn’t need a big explanation. I didn’t care about the past itself, but my focus was more on how we were going to handle the future. What we could do to get closer again, what we could do to keep her momentum going. What kinda things she thought would maybe help pull her away from falling back into that rut. I don’t know what it was she thought I was wanting to talk about, but I know when I talked, and she could hear my pain… she kept quiet.
She stopped talking to me. We stopped going on dates. Our relationship became this big pool of anxiety around each other. She for so long wanted to be heard, and when she was, it was me who was now not being heard. I wanted to work on the foundation a little bit, get back to being best friends again. Of course parts of my pain are going to arise when I try and talk to her. It was a real issue, because of that it is hard to hold back the pain. Talking about problems sometimes is harder than actually working on them. That pain always reminded her of what she blamed herself for. She probably still blames herself for it.
We don’t want to hurt the people we love. Blaming ourselves for the pain we feel we have already caused can turn into us feeling like we are walking on egg shells. Her stop in talking to me caused a terrible cycle. One that at points in time we all fall victim to. Being afraid to say anything wrong, or that would hurt that person further, so she continued to be quiet. Not only that, but any free time she had was out with her friends. Spending her days off out of the house with others. Making the same mistake I did when I was overworking my job. I had to fight for any time with her. Which all created more pain for me. So the next time a conversation came up she could tell there was more pain, again making her feel worst. There became now a deafening silence. Continuing the trend down the road tell it hits the inevitable position of asking one’s self if it can even be fixed at this point.
I was in so much pain. Months had gone by, we had only been on one actual date. We didn’t really talk anymore. I’m trying to find a way to reach her. I had stepped back to give her space because I had been over bearing in my fears of us not getting better. By the time I had learned and recognized the cycle. She had already talked herself out of the relationship. Outside of all of the pain, in the moments they didn’t hold us back, there was a fantastic relationship waiting to blossom. I know she saw it. There was just too much pain, and a fixation on the bad and the past. We were both looking at this Great Wall from two different sides. Both of us stuck isolated and alone. Then she dropped the real bomb.
“I’m going to Alaska for the season.” No me, just her. 2 and a 1/2 weeks out. Bought the tickets, had the job, it was decided. She had already left me. I was expected to watch the life and rut we had created. Our animals, her family, whatever it was she was leaving behind was now my responsibility. I had to live in the filth while she ran around playing this game of having no problems. Nothing to deal with. So when two weeks went by and she wouldn’t make time to call and talk to me, and the only time she chose to talk to me was when I was busy. I chose it to be time to cut it off. Hearing all the fun she was having while I was stuck drowning was the final push for me.
I wanted better. I wanted a life partner, someone I could enjoy going through life with. Someone who wanted me in their life. I needed to heal. She needed to heal. So I shifted to this, “I love her, but we both need to heal some first.” So I set out to better how I felt about myself and my life, thinking that when she got home in 4 months we could talk and start things off better. Propelling us forward both together and individually. Like she had alluded to and led me to believe.
I lost 50 pounds. I had money saved up. I had completely turned things around. Yet when she got home. She had not done anything with any intent of us being anything. Nothing regarding us. It was all 100% her. I couldn’t hug her. Sleeping in the same bed I couldn’t hold her. She didn’t even move closer to me. Yet when she was comfortable enough, she could kiss me. She could hug me. She could get close, but I was stuck confused and pulled in all directions. I just wanted to be with her. Smile, laugh, talk. Yet every time she’s look at me there was nothing but fear. As if all she could see was the pain. As if all I was going to be was her pain.
I was now a stranger physically. Connection wise it was still there. She had gained a lot of mental strength which excited me. She was still her. We matched on humor, she had the same social cues. The way we thought about things matched more often than not. I could still read her when she wasn’t worried about getting close to me. In those moments it was like we would be ok.
The pain of loving someone so deeply. Staying with them through all of their darkness. Then having them act and treat you as if you were an abuser. That is the hardest thing to have to witness. I wanted her to be in my life because we had always fit, I saw something that I guess she didn’t though. I never saw “us” specifically as being the issue. It was always we just needed to fix a small thing here and there (outside of depression). For example communication. Be real with where each other are at. Honestly, with her depression I always figured her getting out of it and seeing that she had the strength for it would be our time to actually start living. Instead I got an apology for all of the pain that was caused. Then got disregarded like a used toy that had ran its course.
That is what happened. I hadn’t even had the chance to have my best friend, see her grow or become her best self. I spent all that time and gave all the love I could, becoming the best me I have been in the entirety of my life. Her being there for most of it. Yet in the end I wasn’t even worth keeping around. I wasn’t worth doing life with. Now it’s stated I am not even an option. I lost my best friend. A lifetime partner. The world as I knew it had crashed and shattered into an infinite amount of pieces.
With that, I had to make my choice. They made their choice and I couldn’t control or change that. I won’t force them to choose me because forced love isn’t true love. I never cared about the pain of dealing with her depression once I had an understanding of depression. For me, she was worthy of the effort that I had put in. I still believe that. I just wish that I had of been worth that effort as well. I don’t believe in finding the right person, I believe that we both become the right person. It’s a process done together. Since I am not worthy of that effort, I am moving on. I’ll find someone new. Someone who will appreciate the love that I have to give. Who will want me as there best friend in this journey of life.

2024.05.12 09:15 AccomplishedSir1329 How to manage work/dating life drama?

So I started dating a coworker a few months ago, throughout our dating we decided to keep our relationship private due to gossip spreading quickly at work. Our relationship has blossomed into something so beautiful and I have never felt love like this before. Recently my partner was suspended from work due to 2 guests saying that his massage was inappropriate (he’s a massage therapist) and I feel conflicted. I trust him and don’t believe he would jepordize our relationship or his job because he loves his job, and I know he loves me through all of his actions shown but I feel ashamed because I don’t want people at work to judge him or say I’m with a creep. I feel bad for making it about me but I can’t help but want to control what others think of him and it hurts me to think that people will be talking bad about him and linking me in as well. People at our job have been speculation we are together but neither of us have confirmed nor denied. I have a few girls at my job who don’t like me and I feel like they’re going to use this as fuel against me to talk shit. I guess my question is how to I manage all of these emotions I’m feeling, although I trust my partner how do I not allow the opinions of other to influence my relationship? How do I not allow outside judgement to view my partner differently? I have trust issues to begin with and even though my gut instinct is telling me he is not a bad guy who did this on purpose how do I trust myself to make the right decision?

2024.05.12 08:14 Celmisiaa AITA for asking my (now ex) boyfriend to get a strep throat test after getting sick multiple times in the past month and ruining our relationship.

EDIT: Since someone asked for a TLDR I've added one::: Please understand there is a lot of information to have to compact here which I do not believe can accurately fit into a short TLDR but here goes.
TLDR: I had repeated strep throat infections resulting in over a months worth of constant antibiotics. I asked (ex) bf to please get a test for it as well. He refused and seemed angry. Ghosted me for 3 days then came back calling me self-centered. I tried to reason with him and figure out what his point of view is but instead he ghosted me for 3 days before finally saying he was too busy to reply due to work and stressful job changes. We talked a bit and returned to regular conversation for the following 3 weeks. He came over to stay after going to an event together then left suddenly and despite him previously saying we'd spend golden week together. He has since ignored me for another week.
:::UPDATE::: I have my house key back. He came to my house to give it back and we had a small chat about wtf has been up with him. Unsurprisingly he didn't have reasons for things. Only saying suddenly going on dates costs too much money ( I always offer to pay but he insists he has to) and that his job change is too stressful. Therefore we "no longer match". Whatever the hell that means. He also gave weak excuses that we didn't match because I like gardening and he doesn't and then proceeds to say my clothing and the fact I wear makeup doesn't suit 'his' style. Srsly fuck this guy. We parted ways and he was unable to clearly say we're broken up saying he's got a lot to think about. He can go think all he wants but for me obviously it's over. He suddenly sent me a few random messages last night about starting his new job early and how he's got an exam to take in October. Least to say I didn't reply as I see no point and fail to see what he is trying to achieve.
Thank you everyone for your comments and support !!! This whole event has triggered anxiety attacks for me but I'm receiving treatment for that. The doctor also believes after I have finished my recent 2 week course of mild antibiotics I should be cleared of strep throat. It's been a long journey. ‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to start off with I'm a big fan of the podcast and I hope that posting here will help me organize my feelings and perhaps make me see things a different way.
::Warning:: This make take some time to get into the T. Please bare with me and thank you
Starting off I'd like to make it clear that prior to this incident nothing in our relationship seemed out of place. We talked often and despite our busy work schedules would try to meet up atleast once every week or two weeks to spend time together.
About a month ago now, I (30F) was diagnosed with severe strep throat that has reoccured 3 times. Each time I start to get sick the glands in my throat swell up like golf balls so bad that I look like a croaking toad. Swelling and aside it's often accompanied by high fevers close to 40°c (104F). This resulted in trips to the hospital where I was misdiagnosed (This is not uncommon where I live, but that's a separate story) and I ended up just suffering through until my regular doctors clinic would open. During this time my (ex) boyfriend (32M) stood by my side looking after me, changing my cooling pads and made sure my temperature didn't go higher even going so far to take time off his jobs (he has 2) just to look after me through my fevers.
All things seems to be fine again as I began to recover while on antibiotics from my regular doctor. The following weekend we were to meet up for a date and he chose Mt Yoshino, a very popular spot from cherry blossom viewing. I ask him atleast 3 different times if he was sure he'd like to go there as the hike up the mountain is fairly significant. Before we left to go on the trip I checked one last time as I didn't think his shoes were the most suitable, nor his white loose fit pants (as they could get stained) He said there were no issues and we proceeded with the trip. Despite me pre-warning him that it was a long and very uphill hike he solidered on and he later admitted that perhaps he hadn't made the best choice for our date this time. I reassured him that I don't mind at all because I enjoying being around nature and walking and that I'd done this hike once before. He stayed over that evening and everything seemed perfectly fine.
UNTIL
Wednesday morning disaster stuck again as I was hit by swelling and high fevers again. I again went to the doctors to have a check up and was told I have strep again (still) and they would be trying a different course of antibiotics. I was pretty distraught by this as also asked my (ex) boyfriend to please get a test as well. I was worried because he'd spend a lot of time looking after me maybe he'd caught it. He refused and then coldly said "I'm too busy" I replied saying I was worried and to please get one and I'm sorry if it upset him by asking him to also take the test.
This is where I was met with his first ever instance of him ghosting me. Over the 3 days he ghosted me I kept my messages to a minimum trying to accept that he might just need some time to cool off. I thought what I had asked him to do was not so completely unreasonable given how strep throat can easily spread and carriers exists as well.
Well his silence broke 3 days later. He said "I'm not angry. I just think you're being self centered"
I WAS SHOCKED !
I proceeded to try and ask him why he felt that way but he wouldn't give a clear answer. He only said that we shouldn't meet until I'm better because that's how we should deal with infectious diseases. I thought his words and behavior were strange and I tried to explain that by asking him to get a test was I in no way blaming him. It was just a precaution.
He then went SILENT for another day or so and came back said " Sorry my job isn't going well as it's commission based and I have a lot of concerns" He then went on to say again that I was a bit selfish and finished off with this gem a line like Spidermans Uncle "You are free to choose your actions, but with freedom comes responsibility."
At this point I tried not to feel angry since he is showing signs of deep stress. I pointed out that I am here for him and I'd like to support him in anyway I can and that I'm worried about the continous stress his job and my sickness has caused him. I suggested we have a proper sit down and talk so he can express how he's feeling better.
:::: At this point I should mention while I speak English my (ex) boyfriend does not. Therefore we usually converse in Japanese. However, for some reason druning this conversation he chose to use what i assumed was a translation app:::
I also tried to ask him how can I make him feel more comfortable. Did he need more space apart to relax and think. Or had I been asking him to help too much recently. I let him know I'm eternally grateful for everything he's done for me and with me over the past 6 months.
His reply came saying " You told me I should go to the hospital, but you always didn't listen to my advice. And reading your message, I got the feeling that you were only worried about yourself."
I questioned him about this and what he meant by it. As we both know going to a hospital has not worked in the past and my current doctor is the only one who seems to be able to listen to my symptoms and prescribed medicine. I also apologized if my words had made him feel I only cared for myself. I was merely worried about his condition and mine had become so bad. He then said my comments were double standard which I couldn't understand.
The conversation continues and it feels like he's just trying to take hits at me through the messages I'll be honest gaslighting. (If anyone wants pictures I'll try find them)
It boiled eventually to me telling him he had really hurt my feelings by ignoring me for 3 days, and I understand he is stressed but if he needs to have a shutdown moment like that again to please just say I'm feeling stressed/overwhelmed and want to take some time. That in the very least is better than ghosting your partner to wonder what happend.
3 weeks passed and we reverted to somewhat regular conversation, and if I'm being completely honest, I felt that if I pushed him more on the subject he'd have further withdrawn so I tried to draw us back to a happier place. Both of us had been very busy. On top of my continuous doctors trips and different antibiotics I started a new job and was having a good time settling in and realizing my new company treated me 1000% better than what I had left.
We agreed to meet up and spend time together during golden week as he had said he had 4/27 ~ 5/6 off from work which matched almost with my schedule of 5/3 ~ 5/5 We met up during that weekend. I had chosen a meat festival even to go to nearby as he really enjoys eating BBQ and meat. We hadn't seen each other in about 3 weeks and since that initial "fight" so I could tell he looked awkward when we met up. I tried to lighten the mood and play some cute couple hand games and decide what to eat together. His mood seemed to be more relaxed and lifed after this (or perhaps he was just starving up till then, you decide) After the meat festival, we went to a firework event just a bit further out from the city. We were both taking lots of videos and pictures.
IT WAS AT THIS MOMENT that I realized since our initial conflict over the strep throat he'd be hiding his Instagram from me. I had been aware in the back of my head that for about a month I'd not seen any of his stories but had just pushed worries aside, and we'd been messaging still. It got brought to my attention more clearly as I could see him posting to his story which I couldn't view. I turned to him at this stage and tried to casually ask him about it.
Me " Hey I can't seem to view your Instagram posts" Him passive but awkward face Me " did you block me or something?" I asked jokingly as I knew he hadn't. Him "No it's just difficult to explain" Me: "I'll do my best to understand " Him: "No, it's difficult"
Least to say that small pit on anxiety I'd been feeling for 3 weeks sent me sick to my stomach. I tried to reassure myself maybe he's just tired or is being considerate of my language ability. But it continued to nag at my gut as to what possible reason he could have anyway to start hiding it since our initial "fight" 3 weeks ago.
After the fireworks finished we went back to my house for a few last drinks and to go to sleep. The whole night I remember tossing and turning awake because he was wanting to initiate s#x and I was just so exhausted I didn't want any. ( I've mentioned this to him several time that there's nothing wrong I'm just extremely tired and want to sleep first, which he has normally accepted) He got what he wanted in the morning anyway once we were both awake and fairly well rested.
As it was my impression that we had the whole weekend together I said I wanted to go to the home center to get some things for my garden and I'd like a bit of help getting rid of some spiders and this giant 2m thistle that was posing dangers to the road below.
At the home center, I noticed he did not seem enthusiastic at all. I asked him twice if he was okay, was he feeling stressed? That we could go if he didnt like it here and I'm happy to carry the basket and head to the counter . He kept insisting he was fine despite the growing discontent on his face. I tried to quickly finish up and pay as per past experiences over the last 3- 4 weeks he is not wiliing to express his feelings to me.
We arrived back at my house and I asked him if he'd like a break or some lunch. He simply said he was fine and proceeded to sit in the house entryway while I freed the plants from their bags. He stayed sitting down until I asked him for help with a few weeds as I tackled some bigger tree cuttings. He worked for 5-10 minutes before saying he'd sit down for a break. He took a break for 45mins and didn't speak to me, just kept looking down at his phone watching videos or tiktoks. As I was finishing up putting the biggest plant in the ground he suddenly announced he's be going home to shower. I said he's more than welcome to use the one in my house but he continued with wanting to do laundry and play games at home to relax. I became upset by this as it was my understanding we'd be spending golden week together and 50min for some much needed gardening wouldn't be a problem ( if anyone asks, yes he knew I wanted to do a bit of gardening and cleaning up before he came to stay) I finally asked for his help with this 2m long thistle and then I'd walk him back to the station. The whole walk back he just continued to ask if I was angry. At the time I replied yes because he was going home so suddenly.
When we said goodbye at the station, you could cut the tension with a knife. I tried to hold back my tears as we were in public and I just felt so frustrated. We hugged and said goodbye quickly and just like that he was gone.
I felt pretty bad once I got home, and given how things had been going I had wanted to be able to give him a proper goodbye but didn't know of I'd be able to hold back tears. I sent him the following message after we parted ways
「I'm not angry. Im just feeling very lonely at the moment. I've missed seeing you these past 3 weeks. I felt very sad when we said goodbye and had the impression we'd be spending more time together. We haven't decided on when next to see each other, and Golden week is the longest holiday period for the whole year. We don't know when will see each other next. I miss you」
What are your thoughts everyone. Have I really been self centered and not properly considering his feelings? Thank you for taking the time to read all of this.
Edit: Apologies for my crappy spelling and grammar. I've tried to fix some
::::::::::Note::::::::: I feel like this has leaned a bit far from the title at this stage but I'll add that after we met up I went to to doctors again and was told I have strep throat again and am on further antibiotics
Since my last message from above was sent he has not replied and gone full ghost.
This man also has a key to my house that I'd need back
I am a New Zealand F and he is a Japanese M. If that matters to anybody.
I didn't use a throwaway account as I figured there's no possibility of him or his friends seeing this anyway and I'm feeling a bit too down in the dumps to make a separate account. I barely use this one for anything anyway
::::EDIT:::: There are a number of comments expressing concerns about stds and for me to get checked. I get checked regularly as it is the normal thing to do for one's safety. I purely just have reoccurring strep throat infections. No stds here. Thank you all the commenter's who were concerned over this.

2024.05.12 05:17 HotCaramel26 What If WW2 continued for another 29 years?

Recently, I was reading the story of Japanese intelligence officer Hiroo Onoda, who continued fighting WW2 on the Philippine island of Lubang for 29 years unaware that WW2 had ended years prior in 1945. So, even though it's completely stupid and highly unlikely, what if this DID happen? What If WW2 ended in 1974 instead of 1945? Again, I know this is unlikely, so please don't come @ me in the replies.
___
EDIT: After getting more upvotes and replies then I initially expected, I feel like I have to give my two cents about this whole thing. Now, I could maybe see this happening if America hadn't supplied the Allied powers with lend lease when they did. Britain would likely still secure air superiority over Germany following the Battle of Britain, and would continue to hold out on the mainland and in their African colonies against Italy and the Afrika Korps. Operation Barbarossa would likely still happen, and without Lend Lease the Soviet Union likely falls to Germany where a border is drawn along the A-A line. The rest of the Soviet Union left untouched by the treaty following Barbarossa would likely just collapse thereafter into a series of warlord states. This is pretty bad news for Britain, as Germany's attention can now be fully drawn to Africa. When Pearl Harbor is bombed by the Japanese, America would officially enter the conflict with a declaration of war on the Axis power of Japan. In response, Germany, who's likely secured a victory against the Soviet Union at this time and is pushing back Britain in Africa, declares war on the United States.
Speaking of Japan, they probably would've seen a lot more success in their East Asian operations without the United Front being supplied with crucial resources, materials, food, etc from American Lend Lease. Lend Lease was crucial for all of the allied powers, but especially for China even if they received far less than their European counterparts. We could see Japan securing a lot more coastline than they did in our own history, and possibly even pushing deeper west.
Keep in mind, just for the sake of the scenario, I'm going to assume that for whatever reason these conflicts are far longer and thus bloodier than they actually would've been. Maybe it would have occurred if the war commenced a couple of years earlier like in that one Harry Turtledove novel. I'm sure you know the one. Everything just takes longer. The United States, whom at this wouldn't have been fully militarized or even prepared, would need to militarize at such short notice against Japan which might be able to prolong the conflict at least in Europe and maybe even in the Pacific for a time. Without the full potential of the U.S. being realized, the Pacific War takes far longer. Japan might be able to see a few more victories against America, but their defeat is inevitable even without a prepared United States. Once their industry gets rolling, it REALLY gets rolling, so their defeat is just a matter of time. They cannot produce at the same rate as the U.S., nor can they supply their troops as much as the U.S. And, again, just for the sake of the scenario, Japan for whatever reason doesn't surrender to the Americans. Even with the nuking of two cities, even if they they're losing on all fronts, and even if the war itself is far bloodier and draining, they do not surrender.
Operation Downfall would commence on November of X year on X date (I'm not trying to predict the alternate dates, just outlining how the war would have lasted for thirty seven or more years.) This invasion would have been devastating, especially for Japan with casualties for both civilians and servicemen estimated to be in the tens of millions and possibly even more with repeated firebombings, nukings, etc. Operation Ketsugo, the Japanese defense of the homeland, outlined an all-out defense of Kyushu to the point where little was left for any future defense operations. This invasion is complete population suicide and cultural devastation for Japan, an invasion that's likely prolonged by guerrillas or Japanese civilian resistance to the Americans. Think of it like the Vietnam War to an extent, except America can deploy troops directly into North Vietnam. Japan's state in this alternate war is definitely not suffice for a defense of the homeland against an American invasion, and their defenses likely falter against America. Civilian resistance might prolong it by a couple of months, but it's inevitable. With the war against America continuing for a longer duration of time, and Japan refusing to surrender no matter the cost, Operation PX otherwise known as the weirdly ominous Operation Cherry Blossoms At Night might actually occur.
For those who don't know, Operation PX was a planned Japanese biological attack on the west coast cities of the U.S., specifically San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The plan for the attack involved Serian aircraft launched from submarine aircraft carriers upon said cities utilizing cholera, typhus, dengue fever, and the bubonic plague (yes, that bubonic plague), as the biological and chemical substances. This plan was actually fairly close to going through, and was even finalized, but was shelved due to the strong opposition from the Chief of General Staff Yoshijiro Umezu. All that was really needed for it's passing was time. Eno Yoshio, a former captain, said in a 1977 interview that "At the time, Japan was losing badly, and any means to a victory would have been alright." Yoshio himself, however, supposedly opposed the idea. You can probably imagine the ramifications of such a thing occurring.
Anywho, once Japan is forced into a technical surrender, I could see loyalist civilians and even some servicemen continuing to fight a guerrilla campaign against their American occupiers. Regardless, America's full attention is shifted to Europe.... which is probably under German control, including Britain. Remember, America shortly after the official declaration of war isn't prepared and is forced to militarize on short notice. America entering the war in this history doesn't guarantee an automatic allied victory, as America itself isn't ready for war and thus can't supply Britain as well as it could when it's attention needs to be focused on itself and it's war with Japan. With German attention fixated on Africa, the Suez Canal might be captured, preventing Britain from drawing resources from it's colonies as well as supplying it's colonies. Specifically their forces within Egypt, Sudan, and their middle eastern holdings. Combined with several attempts to capture Gibraltar, therefore locking a majority of the Royal Navy within the Mediterranean, British industry faltering against the superior German industry, you have Britain overseeing an invasion under Operation Sea Lion. Following this, the world essentially devolves into the novel the Anglo-American Nazi War. Or perhaps a cold war between the United States and Germany.

2024.05.11 20:11 forrestnthesun 29 [M4F] New Jersey, Looking for a woman who enjoys nature and the simple things in life

I'm just a simple man looking for a simple woman. My idea of a perfect date is to have a cozy picnic somewhere in nature and watch the sunset as you're in my arms. Nature never fails to amaze and rejuvenate me with its tranquility. Observing animals in the wild is one of my favorite things to do when hiking.
Besides spending time in nature, I love basketball and it's one of my major passions. I try to play every chance I get. I love a beautifully shot film as I really appreciate good acting and cinematography. I can appreciate good food too and am always open to trying new cuisines.
I really value loyalty, honesty, communication, and morals. I know that I have a lot of love and affection to give and all I need is someone to reciprocate that. No material object will ever replace the magic that is true love.
I love having good conversation and getting to know each other so I don't mind taking it slow or even starting out with a friendship that blossoms into love.
Perhaps it was fate for our paths to cross.

2024.05.11 20:01 micktalian The Gardens of Deathworlders: A Blooming Love (Part 66)

Part 66 What makes a species scary (Part 1) (Part 65)
[Help support me on Ko-fi so I can try to commission some character art and totally not spend it all on Gundams]

With her whole-body sensory suite, vastly increased processing capabilities, and a self-recharging power cell and battery system capable of sustaining moderate activity for years at a time without refueling or recharge, Nula'trula had spent over two days straight wandering about the Amenities Section of The Hammer and taking it all in. Between the vibrant lights of the higher density entertainment and shopping districts, the cozy suburban segments full of smiling faces, and the serene nature areas that held flora from across the stars, there was so much that it would take months, if not years, to see it all. Now that her new physical form allowed her to feel the difference betweens in the artificial day-night cycle's cool mornings, warm afternoons, and chilly evenings, the sights and sounds weren't the only things to be experienced. And while she couldn't be certain that the various fragrances which graced her olfactory sensors were being interpreted the same way her creators would have experienced the smells, the android woman was simply happy to have this full and nearly organic ability to perceive her surroundings.

The particular place Nula had found herself walking through at the moment was lush with fully natural plant life, filled with actual birds chirping and fluttering about the domed off area, and even featured an immaculate recreation of the physical conditions of a world she had never even heard of. Though most of the people in this aviary and greenhouse were Qui'ztar, just like every other location throughout The Hammer, the second most numerous species the artificial woman saw as she took in the sights and smells seemed oddly familiar to her. Their snouts weren't quite long enough, their facial shape was far rounder than it was triangular, and their vertical slit pupils were quite unique. However, despite those obvious differences and the preloaded information in her upgraded memory banks informing her that they were from an Ascended feline species, these Kikitau bore an uncanny resemblance to the Artuv'trula species who created her.

After only a few minutes of walking through this natural area, reading the various signs describing the flora and fauna, and basking in every sensory input she could, Nula'trula noticed herself slowly spending more time casually glancing at the other people also enjoying this space. Having spent most of the past couple days going unnoticed as she wandered about the ship, and only receiving the occasional pleasant smile from passersby, there had been no real want or need to pay close attention to the sentient beings who called this ship their home. However, as the android woman bent over to smell the flowers and carefully examined the intricate structures of some of these plants, she couldn't help but notice many of the feline eyes falling on her. As she approached a small water feature, a glistening pond with a small creek flowing into it via a waist high waterfall, Nula happened to see a Qui’ztar security guard approaching her, as well as one of the Kikitau seemingly half hiding behind a tree.

“State your purpose for being here.” The moment the security guard was within just a few paces of Nula, she spoke up with a tone that implied she was speaking to a non-sentient being. “And who is your owner?”

“Oh! Uh… I don't have an owner…” Being unsure of how to respond, Nula hesitated for a moment and glanced around. “And I was just enjoying this beautiful and serene place… Is this area not open to the public? Because if so-”

“You're a sapient AI?!?” Those crimson red eyes which had held a noticeable amount of annoyance just a moment ago now looked positively embarrassed. “My deepest apologies, ma'am. I had received a report that an unescorted automaton was lost and wandering alone. That was obviously untrue and, again, I apologize. But, yes, this area is open to the public. You are free to enjoy it to your heart's content.”

“If my presence here is causing discomfort to anyone, I can leave or-”

As Nula quickly looked around, she noticed a few of the Kikitau staring her way in a manner that made her feel a bit uneasy. Hesitantly, the android peered to the side of the brick house of a woman who was standing in front of her and towards the feline who was still skittishly peeking out from behind a thick evergreen. Following the AI woman’s glowing golden eyes, the security guard noticed the poorly obscured person who, quite likely, was the individual who submitted the anonymous report that had brought her here for nothing. Considering that most of this Qui’ztar’s job was to handle misunderstandings such as this, especially with security being so tight, the proper course of action was already clear to her.

“No, you don't have to leave.” There was an almost tired and annoyed inflection in the blue woman’s deep voice as she made a gesture with her head meant to beckon over the cowering Kikitau. “And I suspect we can settle this right now… You! Get over here!”

“Oh! We don’t have to-”

“Trust me, it’s better to talk these kinds of things out.” As the Qui’ztar’s red eyes momentarily returned to Nula, she spoke with a soft voice and shot the digital being a quick wink before returning to her commanding tone and directing her piercing gaze to the now approaching Kikitau. “I am Sergeant Helicha of Ten’yoish, acting security officer for this area, and I assume you are the person who called in the report about an alone and possibly lost automaton?”

“Ye- Yes, ma- ma’am.” Though the feline’s stuttering response came at no surprise to Helicha but thoroughly confused Nula. “M- my name is Minchin Salocia and I’m the c- caretaker of this garden. I- I‘m sorry if I filed a false report, ma- ma’am.”

“Ah, don’t concern yourself about something like that, Minchin Salocia. This was just an innocent mistake, isn’t that right? And it isn’t everyday that a sapient android visits your greenhouse, now is it?” As the security guard's facial expression shifted from stern to surprisingly compassionate, she turned back towards Nula. “I’m sure our friend here isn’t offended by your confusion and we can all move on with our day in peace and harmony.”

“Oh no! I'm not offended at all.” Nula bowed slightly towards the clearly intimidated cat-man who flinched slightly at the motion. “And I'm sorry if I scared you in any way. My name is Nula'trula but you can call me Nula if you prefer.”

“I don’t believe Minchin here is scared of you, Nula'trula. Isn’t that right?” While Helicha had simply believed it was her large size and ample muscle mass that had been causing this man’s timid behavior, the look in his violet, vertical eyes caused her to question that assumption.

“A- Actually…”

/------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Hey, Hompta…” As soon as Nula spotted her furry little friend standing in front of Tens's mech with a tablet in his hand, she sheepishly approached him and tried to get his attention without distracting him from his work.

“Aho, Nula!” Hompta didn't lift his eyes from his tablet as he greeted the digital woman. “How's it?”

“Can… Can I ask you a question? And please be completely honest with your answer.”

“Uh… Sure…?” The Kyim’ayik man still hadn’t looked up to see the almost painful expression on the AI's mechanical face as he carefully examined the data he was receiving.

“Is my face and form scary?”

For a brief second, the beaver-otter froze in place, his eyes staring blankly at his tablet, before he slowly turned towards the canine android. Though his expression was initially more of confusion than anything else, the moment he saw the sad look on his friend’s face, he immediately knew this was a serious question.

“Well… You aren't scary to me. The only beings in this galaxy that actually scare me are Nishnabek.” An empathic smile spread across Hompta’s whiskered lips as he lowered his tablet. “But… I do know some species have a natural fear of canids. It’s something that happens when a species evolves alongside, are hunted by, apex predator canines. Sort of a… genetic phobia, if that makes sense.”

“Is… Is that common? Your species doesn’t have that phobia, does it?”

“Ehhh… I wouldn’t say it’s rare…” Hompta was struggling to find the right balance of honesty and compassion in his explanation, especially considering the clearly distressed expression written all across Nula’s incredibly detailed mechanical face. “And no. Gi’schia does not have any species that quite match the canine category. It does, however, have predatory felines. Some Kyim’ayik I’ve met just don’t like Kikitau or Op’thulians because they’re vaguely reminiscent of our ancestral adversaries. Nishnabe, on the other hand, genuinely are terrifying pretty much no matter what.”

“That's the same thing the security officer said.” Where the android's face had softened into a slight smile, it was the small furry man's turn to have a look of distressed confusion appear on his face. “Not about the Nishnabe, but about fears related to morphologies.”

“Hold on! What's this about a security officer?!? What have you been doing, Nula?!?”

“I was just exploring a greenhouse meant to simulate the Kikitau homeworld. At least I think that's what Caretaker Minchin told me.” Seeing as that wasn't anywhere enough to alleviate her friend's concern, Nula began recounting her encounter that happened less than an hour ago. “While I was exploring the greenhouse, a security guard approached me after receiving a report of an unsupervised automaton. As it turns out, the caretaker noticed me, saw how I looked, and got scared. Scared enough to call in a security guard. Luckily, after Helicha brought us together, Minchin and I were able to talk it out. And I think I may even have made another friend! But…”

While Nula'trula's voice trailed off, the slight smile that had spread across her lips began to show a certain sadness.

“Being judged by the way you look isn't fun, is it?”

“No. No, it isn't fun at all.”

“But you said you think you made a friend?”

“Oh yes!” Nula's heartfelt grin returned as she turned to look in the general direction of the nature area she had just come from. “Minchin is a very nice man. After we started talking, he showed me all of his favorite plants and birds. And he even invited me to come back whenever I wanted. But… Well… He kept looking at me in a certain way and…”

“What kinda way?” Though Hompta could see something was still bothering his friend, he couldn't help but give the android’s impressively sculpted body a quick once over.

“Honestly, I'm not sure.”

“Could he have been flirting?”

“Wha-! What do you mean?!?” That possibility had obviously not yet crossed Nula's mind and a slight glow suddenly became visible from between the small and finely crafted paneling of her mechanical face. “Why would he be… Why would he do that if I scared him?!?”

“I mean…” Hompta began chuckling in an adorably high pitched tone. “You aren't too far off from the morphology of Kikitau. And, if I remember right, they are a female dominant species. I'll bet money that man's been scared of every woman he's ever been attracted to!”

“Really?!? I- Uh… Well…” The light emanating from Nula's face grew more intense as she slowly reached into the small pocket on her thin, loose fitting, and flowing top that covered just her chest and arms but not her sculpted ab-like stomach paneling. “He did give me this before I left.”

As the canine android pulled out a short cutting of small, purple flowers with tiny pink spots, Hompta immediately knew what he was looking at. While the hyn’jutori plant was incredibly similar to countless other minty flora that exist across the galaxy, there was a very unique and particular fragrance that was recognizable to anyone who had spent enough time around Kikitau. While it wasn't exactly bad smelling, the sweet and crisp aroma greatly overpowered the other aromas produced to the plant, there was a certain odor that species who could consciously pick up on pheromones would notice. And while that scent wasn't particularly strong, just enough for the little beaver-otters to know what he was looking at, the fact Nula had been given the flower gave Hompta all the confirmation he needed.

“Oh, if he gave that, he was definitely flirting!” The squeaky giggle had become a full on cackle as the furry little man looked up at the now obviously flustered and blushing android. “What were you two talking about before he gave that to you, huh?”

“Oh! Um… Uh…” Nula was at a loss for words and her glowing face and fidgeting body made that clear as day while she stared at the blossom in her hand. “Why would you think that him giving me this would be flirting?”

“Nula, hyn’jutori is the Kikitau national plant, acts almost like a drug, and is prized above all else. And… Well… They use it as an aphrodisiac!”

“Are you Minchin Salocia?” A masculine and authoritative voice called out right as the feline man began reaching for the control panel to open the door to his quarters.

“Uh… Yes…?” As Min turned to see who was speaking to him, he saw a species he was unfamiliar with. Though this person looked vaguely similar to the Qui’ztar that constituted the majority of this ship's population, the medium tan skin, relatively short stature, and piercing brown eyes were quite unique. “And you are?”

“I am Tensebwse of the Nishnabe.” As Tens slowly approached the Kikitau man, his ball-headed club mounted to his thigh in a manner similar to how Qui’ztar often carried their bladed weapons, he neither blinked nor shifted his stoic expression. “I heard you met my friend Nula earlier.”

“Nula?” Though Min wasn't familiar with the approaching man's species, he could immediately recognize the expression on the man's face. “Yes, yes! She is a wonderful person and I am very glad to have met her. But… Uh… Why do you ask?”

“Well… She's my friend.” Tens came to a stop a pace and a half away from the cat-man, just within reach if either were to try to take a swing. “And you gave her a hyn’jutori flower.”

“Oh! Yes, she said she liked the smell so, yah know, I-” Min panicked for a split second and tried to play off his reason for giving the blossom to the, frankly, quite curvy android he had met just a few hours ago and was still thinking about. However, when he saw Tens's eye twitch, he cut himself off, took a deep breath, and decided against trying to lie about his reasoning. “I thought she was really cute and… Well…”

“Uh huh…” Even though this Kikitau was a few centimeters taller than Tens and they both had similar, somewhat wiry frames, especially in comparison to the truly imposing Qui’ztar primes, Tens somehow seemed much larger than Min in this moment. “And you're not scared of her canine shape?”

“I mean… Kinda… A little bit… But…”

“But…”

“Well, you're her friend! You know how she looks!” After half-shouting a bit louder than he intended, Min paused for a moment as he looked around to see if there was anyone within earshot. “Don't tell any of the other Kikitau about this… But… Uh… She's scary enough to be quite attractive, if you know what I mean.”

Despite doing his best to play the part of a deadly cousin trying to look out for someone he truly cared about, Tens couldn't help but let a slight smirk peek out from the corners of his mouth as he let out a light chuckle.

“Yeah… I think I know what you mean…” In an instant, the Nishnabe's stoic expression returned as he gave the Kikitau a quick once over. “So you were flirting with my friend?”

“Well… Yes… I- I… Uh…”

“Relax.” Tens finally let his glare fade into a friendly smile. Though he wasn't done grilling this man just yet, his first impression of this Kikitau was far more positive than a couple of the others he had met over his years of anti-piracy work. “I just wanna make sure you weren't leading her on.”

“Oh! No! Not at all! I swear!”

“Eh, eh, eh. Like I said, relax, niji. You seem like a decent guy. Nula's my friend and… Well… She doesn't have much social experience. Like, at all. She didn't even know caniphobia was a thing until Hompta explained it to her. And I know how y'all kazho-bemadzejek are around nemosh so-”

“I'm sorry. What did you say?” The look on Min's face wasn't offended in any way which told Tens that his Nishnabemwin words weren't understood by the cat-person. “What is a kaz-ho-”

“Sorry, I forget that not everyone has a translator implant.” Tens’s soft and slightly embarrassed smile brought a bit more confusion to Min’s violet, vertical eyes. “It means feline sapient people. And nomesh is my people’s word for domesticated canines.”

“Domesticated canines?!?”

“Yeah, my people domesticated a type of canine so long ago that we kinda have caniphilia.” Tens’s overly simplified explanation drew a coy and almost blushing smile to Min’s furry face. “Eeee, not like that! It's more that we see canines and immediately want to make friends with them. One of my cousins tried to pet one of those massive nethivichioks while on a hunt on a Nukatov world once. Basically, we see all canines as our long lost companions. Sort of the opposite of being terrified of anything even vaguely canine-shaped. But, anyways, I just wanted to be sure you weren't gonna do anything to hurt my friend. Like I said, she doesn't have much social experience. So, you're gonna be nice to her, right?”

“Of course, of course! If I'm being entirely honest… And please don't tell her this… I was actually planning on asking her out on a date if she stopped by the greenhouse again while I was working.”

“Were yah now?” Tens's smile became almost devious and his eyes grew more intense. “In that case, we may want to step inside your quarters. There's some things you should probably know which are… Let's just say… Classified.”
