Most people remember and admire Hrishikesh Mukherjee for his light hearted dramas and comedies of the 70s and 80s like Anand, Guddi, Chupke Chupke, Mili and Gol Maal. Only a few real admirers of his talent remember his social dramas of the 60s like Anuradha, Anupama, Satyakam etc and barely a handful have watched and enjoyed his masterful directorial debut which was an anthology of short stories decades ahead of its time named Musafir. It is natural to wonder how a first timer unknown director got the talents of Dilip Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Suchitra Sen to sign up to share the screen in small stories in his debut movie. The answer is simple.....Musafir bears the fingerprints of one of the founding fathers of Bollywood and its most awarded and talented directors of all time.....Bimal Roy and his heir apparent....Hrishikesh Mukherjee. submitted by DrShail to bollywood [link] [comments] Musafir (1957) Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee Produced by Hrishikesh Mukherjee Starring - Dilip Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Kishore Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Usha Kiran, Nazir Hussain, Daisy Irani, Baby Naaz, Mohan Choti and David Written by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Ritwik Ghatak Music by Salil Choudhury Box Office Response - Flop Awards - National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi IMDB Rating - 7.9/10 (131 votes only) RT Rating - No Rating My Rating - 9/10 Bimal Roy created history in the 50s and early 60s with a series of masterpieces which earned him 7 Best Director and 4 Best Film Filmfare awards along with 6 National Awards and a win at the Cannes Film Festival along with 3 nominations for the Palme d'Or. All this was achieved in a short period of 10 years which became instrumental in christening the era as Bollywood's Golden Era. Bimal Roy's team behind this success were his unknown band of writers Ritwik Ghatak, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Nasir Hussain and Nabendu Ghosh, cinematographer Kamal Bose, composer Salil Choudhury, lyricists Shailendra and Gulzar, assistant Basu Bhattacharya and editor Hrishikesh Mukherjee. They all became legends in their own rights in the 60s, 70s and 80s and continued the legacy of Bimal Roy after his untimely death at age 56. Hrishikesh Mukherjee inspired by the variety of stories that Bimal Da was telling in the 50s wrote an anthology of 3 stories depicting marriage, birth and death and cast the actors he was working with on the sets of Bimal Da's movies. Suchitra Sen and Dilip Kumar were the stars of Bimal Roy's Devdas, Kishore Da the star of Bimal Roy's Naukri, Nirupa Roy and Balraj Sahni who provided the narration for the movies were the stars of Bimal Roy's masterpiece Do Bigha Zamin. Hrishi Da wrote the story for Musafir with Rajinder Singh Bedi and Ritwik Ghatak who were writing Bimal Da's masterpiece Madhumati at the same time, signed all the actors from Bimal Da's classics and even mostly used the same crew including Bimal Da's composer, cinematographer etc. The result was a movie like one never seen before.....an anthology of 3 interconnected short stories which perfectly showcased the cycle of life. The movie begins in an ordinary house in an ordinary neighborhood as Balraj Sahni introduces the house where all the 3 stories will take place as its landlord, the aptly named Mahadev Chaudhary played by the talented David welcomes the first guest into the house. Episode 1 - Marriage.....Suchitra Sen and Shekhar's characters of Shakuntala and Ajay are a newly married couple who as the neighborhood's nosy neighbor and her daughter played by Baby Naaz find out have eloped against the wishes of the man's parents. Shakuntala works hard to make her house beautiful and her husband works hard at work. Mohan Chotti plays a tea vendor who keeps her company, brings her tea and informs her about the Pagla Babu who plays the violin at night in the neighborhood that start to admire. One day Ajay's parents turn up at the house with the intent to vent their feelings and disown their son. Shakuntala welcomes them assuming that the landlord and his wife have come for dinner and shows her values of devotion, humility and love. Then their son arrives..... Episode 2 - Birth.....The next family to arrive at Mahadev's house is a father (Nazir Hussain) with his widowed and expecting daughter in law (Nirupa Roy) and younger son Bhanu (Kishore Kumar). This story shows the hard times the family has fallen into after the death of the family's breadwinning elder brother and how the younger brother Bhanu struggles to find a job at the cost of all the savings which his Bhabhi has saved for her soon to be born child. The night melodies of Pagla Babu's violin are the only relief, hope and joy that they experience in the house. After facing ridicule from his father and rejection from all his interviews Bhanu buys a bottle of poison and decides to stop being a burden on the family by ending his life as his nephew prepares to come into his world.... Episode 3 - Death.....A barrister and his sister Uma (Usha Kiran) arrives in the house with her disabled son Raja (Daisy Irani). They are haunted by the violin which Pagla Babu plays in the night. Raja wants to meet the Pagla Babu but the mysterious violinist doesnt want to meet them. Uma finally convinces Mohan Chotti to bring Pagla Babu over to meet the boy. That's when Uma discovers that real identity of Pagla Babu AKA Raja (Dilip Kumar) and their history together. Pagla Babu (Dilip Kumar) bonds with Raja, plays the violin for him and gives him hope that he will walk one day when flowers blossom in their garden. Uma's brother finds out about the visiting Pagla Babu, confronts him and throws out the man who had once betrayed his sister. One night Uma discovers the reason why Raja left her and became Pagla Babu. In the next morning her son Raja sees flowers blossoming in the garden..... Hrishi Da showcases through these lovely stories the gifts of drama and joy that he would deliver to India in the next 3 decades. Musafir met with a very dismal audience reception on release and flopped at the box office despite its star studded cast. However it caught the attention of the Showman of Bollywood, Raj Kapoor who befriended this new talented editor, writer, producer and director. Raj Kapoor immediately launched a commercial project called Anari with Hrishikesh Mukherjee which became the biggest hit of 1959 and launched the career of Hrishi Da and the friendship of these 2 masters. In the 60s the always joyful Raj Kapoor fell seriously ill and was nursed back to health by his dearest friend Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Hrishi Da decided to write a movie loosely based on his friend who he affectionately called Babumoshai which he wanted to direct with Raj Kapoor and Mehmood. But he decided to re-cast the movie with 2 other actors because he couldnt bear to see his friend suffer and die on screen. The movie based on their friendship and their battle with a disease which is unable to take the joy out of his friend's life was none other than Hrishi Da's masterpiece "Anand" which brought the future superstars Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan together for the first time. Musafir is often forgotten as an early Hrishikesh Mukherjee collection of short stories while Anari serves as his first full length feature film. However 7 decades later in an era full of anthologies and collection of short stories, we have to acknowledge and appreciate the original masterpiece from one of Bollywood's brightest storytellers and directors. Musafir is a must watch for any afficionados of good content cinema and fans of Dilip Kumar, Kishore Da and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This is the movie which advanced the legacy of Bimal Roy, started the legend of Hrishi Da and contributed to the unique flavor of the Golden Era. Masterpiece. 9/10. https://preview.redd.it/qwwgbkkstsbb1.png?width=2129&format=png&auto=webp&s=55cbd9dc7e9fd67ebcf0df5659e45590765e5027 |
