2024.03.23 03:13 Secure-Elk Reliable hatchback options?

My 2011 Honda Pilot expired via seemingly spontaneous combustion this week, so I’m unexpectedly in the market for a new car. :(
I want to downsize to a smaller vehicle, but I’ve really come to appreciate the cargo space the Pilot offered. I don’t really need a full SUV so was thinking a hatchback might be a good option. I’m understandably a little leery of Hondas right now, but don’t have experience with other brands of cars. What are folks’ recommendations for a roomy, reliable hatchback?
I’m looking at VW Golf, Hyundai Elantra, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Corolla, though I’m sure there are others I don’t know about.
  1. I’d like to stay around $25K; new or used is fine as long as it’s reliable
  2. Must have good cargo space with the rear seats down. I’m outdoors a lot with moderate-sized equipment (recumbent trike, western horse saddle, SUP, etc.) and my buddies (two 80+ lb dogs; the best boys)
  3. I adhere to recommended maintenance schedules and treat my cars well. The goal would be to keep this car for the next 10 years if possible (I mention this because I’ve seen a lot of people saying to stay away from VW/German cars and others saying they’re fine if you keep up with maintenance)
Thank you for your recommendations!

Hello all,
I'm trying to help my dad find a good VW Trike for sale. We aren't having much luck. Do you have any website or physical location recommendations? We are in Indiana USA and willing to travel.

2023.12.13 21:31 Dry-Pick-1110 Any smart engineer want to help out a dumb welder with their knowledge

This is a personal project I'm doing for fun in my garage.
I am building a trike out of an old vw engine and a chopper frame. I'm usually fairly good at googling things, but I am stumped.
Basically this motor is a standard transmission with 4 speeds and reverse. Most people just mount the shifter somewhere and hand shift.
I'm on a tight budget So I don't want to look at buying some sort of conversion kit if they even make one.
Basically I have a concept in my head of what I think might work for making a "linkage"? Box that will use a gear and some springs to be able to use the peg shifter to maneuver the hand shifter for me.
I would like to draw my idea up and show someone that knows this kind of thing to just say yes that will work or no that won't work.
I'd just like to know in theory if this will work. I'd hate to waste time trying to make something that won't even work.
Thanks in advance to anyone who may want to help
I am from Canada
Edit/
Potentially solved! Thank you all so much! I hadn’t even thought of an electrical system. I’m going to look into this approach for the evening and see. This was fun and I appreciate all of the ideas!
Double edit/
After a long evening of doing some research based off of what different advice I received here yesterday I am going to scale it down and prototype this at home when I get spare time and continue my main build as normally would be done in this situation. If by the time I get to installing the shifting system I am not ready with my thingamajig I will just install a hand shifter and modify it later once I have figured out what is going to work for my intended purpose.
My inbox and this topic will be updated as I progress through this if anyone is interested in watching this whole idea either fail miserably or by some fluke end up working.
Triple Edit/

I have stumbled upon this. $1500 doesn’t seem too bad. They went with the hydraulic approach. Only really adding this in case someone stumbles upon this one day trying to do the same thing as I am. You’re welcome future person!

2022.06.11 16:59 maxwellb Actual minivan replacement

Years ago the guy I hired to paint our house showed up with all his tools in a long tail, waxing poetic about the convenience and taking his kids around on it, and I've been trying to figure out how to make one work ever since. For extra incentive, my city is removing the bus line between my neighborhood and my kids' school. However...
I have four kids (ages 1,4,4,6), and live in a four season city, so I would need at a minimum to transport three at a time plus baggage, ideally all four on occasion. I haven't been able to find a solution for this other than a literal minivan. I don't think a trike is feasible in terms of parking footprint (it would have to be outside as I have no driveway, garage, or space for a shed), and everything I've looked at seems like the kids would outgrow it within a year or two. Has anyone done this successfully?
I see a lot of posts touting various setups as a minivan replacement, but it's always with 1-2 kids and more of a VW Golf replacement. My local cargo bike specialist shop wasn't able to recommend anything.

Hello mini addicts,
I am selling some lots of stuff to make room for a new project. I can ship internationally and have done so several times in the past. Check my miniswap karma here
Prices are without shipping and without PayPal buyer's protection. I will help calculating the total before we agree on a deal.
Picture album here. I will take new time-stamped photos before payment.
Tracked Shipping with German DHL is tiered. Below are examples for shipping to the US. Please ask for exact shipping costs.
  1. Tier 1 - 13 EUR - A large envelope with length x width x height up to 35 x 25 x 3cm. The limiting factor are the 3cm heights. It's enough to send several minis taken from sprue and wrap them in bubble wrap, but if left on sprue, I can fit like 2 of the Intercessors sized sprues (the big letter sized ones)
  2. Tier 2 - 20 EUR - a medium sized box with length + width + height up to 90cm. Imagine the Indomitus box, and add 50% more height. This will be the go to choice most of the time. There is also a 2kg limit as well, but usually not an issue. Unless you order lots of weighty stuff like books or thick terrain sprues.
  3. Tier 3 - 37 EUR - I would say the mother of all boxes, but there is always something bigger. This has been the biggest thing I have shipped so far. You can fit whole armies in here. A huge box with length x width x height up to 120 x 60 x 60 cm and 5kg. Trust me this is huge, imagine stacking three Indomitus boxes.
Thanks for reading and feel free to ask any questions.
