2024.05.17 08:39 Splodey_Goat Loose-fill insulation questions/advice

First time homeowner, bought a townhouse not long ago, one of the things the home inspection brought up was a small spot of potential mold in the attic, and we were advised to paint the whole thing with some anti-mold primer. I waited til spring to do it, got up there the first time earlier today, and realized I have never been in or seen or even really thought about how attics or insulation work because why would I right? So I have a couple immediate questions for y'all and then I'd like to lay out our tenative plans and see if we can get any input. Thank you in advance.
The main question is: Is it safe to walk through/walk on/move around the insulation to do the painting? I had been under the impression while planning this project that there would be visible beams to walk on but they are completely buried. I'm hoping the worst that'll do is compress it a bit and make it less effective, but I don't wanna stir up fiberglass(?) particles and make the air quality unsafe in the house or find out too late that it's not supposed to touch skin or something.
Another thing the home inspector suggested was putting in a vapor barrier in the attic, we decided if the house has been fine without one for 40 years it'd be fine one more year since we wanted to use our home improvement budget this year on other things. It seems smart to replace the insulation and that seems to cost less than the barrier installation, I'm just wondering if I can do that now or if that'll get in the way of the vapor barrier later. I'm pretty sure I can eat some less efficient energy costs for a year, but if enough people tell me to I'd trust them that it's better to put it on a card and get it all done right away.
Info, if it changes anything: The house is 2 stories, built 1980, attic is ventilated and ~520 sq ft. No idea how old the insulation is, it looks a little grody to me personally but the home inspector didn't say anything about it so I doubt it's near the end of its life.

Luck should be connected to insanity when doing drop rolls, I can hardly imagine how many tokens (and money) some players had to burn to get a single one.

2024.05.17 05:14 TrueMetalSmiths EDM Machining: Advantages, applications, and tips

EDM Machining: Advantages, applications, and tips
Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a manufacturing process that has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its precision. EDM uses electrical discharges to cut and shape various types of metals and other materials, making it a valuable tool for numerous industries. We often apply EDM to produce complex molds preparing for injection molding. In this post, we’ll explore more about the advantages , applications, and tips of EDM.

5 Advantages of EDM

EDM offers multiple advantages over traditional machining methods if you choose it.
  1. Precision: We can apply EDM to produce extremely precise cuts and shapes, down to the micrometer level. This makes it ideal for creating small, intricate parts with tight tolerances.
  2. No Heat-Affected Zone: Unlike other machining methods such as laser cutting or plasma cutting, EDM produces no heat-affected zone (HAZ) in the surrounding material. This means that there is no risk of warping, distortion, or other damage to the material being worked on.
  3. Burr-Free Cuts: EDM can create clean, burr-free cuts that require little to no additional finishing. It can save time and money in the manufacturing process.
  4. Minimal Tool Wear: Since EDM does not involve physical contact between the tool and the workpiece, there is minimal tool wear compared to other machining methods. It means that tools last longer and require less frequent replacement.
  5. Environmentally Friendly: EDM produces no chips or shavings, which means that there is minimal waste generated in the machining process. This makes EDM a more environmentally friendly option than many other machining methods.

3 Disadvantages of EDM

There are still some disadvantages of EDM that you need to focus on as below:
  • Limited Material Compatibility: There are some materials that are more difficult to machine using EDM. For example, materials that are highly conductive or have low melting points can be more difficult to machine, as they may result in poor surface finish, excessive electrode wear, or even damage to the workpiece.
  • High Equipment and Maintenance Costs: EDM equipment can be expensive to purchase and maintain, as it requires specialized machines and tooling. Additionally, the process can be quite complex, requiring highly skilled operators to properly set up and operate the equipment.
  • Slow Cutting Speeds: Compared to other machining methods, such as CNC milling or laser cutting, EDM can be slower and less efficient. This is because the process requires multiple passes to achieve the desired depth or shape, and the cutting speed is limited by the electrical discharge and electrode wear.

Comparison with other Machining Methods

While EDM has several unique advantages, it’s important to compare it with other machining methods to determine which one is best suited for a specific application. Here are some key comparisons between EDM and other popular machining methods:
  1. CNC Machining. It involves using computer-controlled machines to remove material from a workpiece. It’s faster than EDM and creates a smoother finish. However, it can only cut materials that can be drilled or cut with a cutting tool, and it often requires more setup time and can be more expensive than EDM.
  2. Laser Cutting. It uses a high-powered laser beam to melt and vaporize material from a workpiece. This process is faster and results in a smoother finish than EDM, but is typically limited to thinner materials and cannot work with hard or reflective materials. Additionally, it often requires specialized safety precautions and can be more expensive than EDM.
  3. Water Jet Cutting. It involves using a high-pressure stream of water mixed with abrasive particles to cut through materials. It’s fast and can cut through thick materials, but it’s not as precise as EDM and can produce a rougher finish. Water jet cutting can also be more expensive than EDM and requires a large amount of water and abrasive materials.

What Are the Common Applications of EDM?

Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a versatile manufacturing process that can be used in a variety of industries and applications. Here are some common examples of how EDM is used:
  • Aerospace: Complex parts for aerospace applications, such as turbine blades, fuel injection nozzles, and aircraft engine components
  • Medical Device Manufacturing: Precise components for medical devices like pacemakers, orthopedic implants, and surgical instruments.
  • Tool and Die Making: Molds and dies for manufacturing processes such as injection molding and stamping.
  • Automotive: Fuel injectors, sensors, and transmission components.
  • Electronics: Small, precise components for electronic devices, such as connectors, switches, and relays.
  • Jewelry Making: Custom engagement rings and other pieces with intricate filigree or engraving.

Common EDM Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Improper electrode selection: The choice of electrode material, size, and shape can greatly impact the quality of the final product. Using the wrong type of electrode can lead to poor surface finish, slow cutting speed, and premature electrode wear. To avoid this mistake, it is important to carefully consider the material being machined and choose the appropriate electrode based on the desired results.
Poor flushing: Proper flushing is essential for removing debris and maintaining the correct dielectric fluid level during EDM. Insufficient flushing can lead to debris buildup, decreased cutting speed, and poor surface finish. To avoid this mistake, it is important to use the correct type and amount of dielectric fluid, and ensure that the flushing system is functioning properly.
Incorrect parameter settings: The correct selection of EDM parameters such as current, pulse duration, and frequency is essential for achieving the desired results. Using incorrect parameter settings can lead to poor surface finish, electrode wear, and slow cutting speed. To avoid this mistake, it is important to carefully analyze the material being machined and adjust the parameters accordingly.
Overcutting: Overcutting occurs when the cutting path extends beyond the desired shape or size, leading to wasted material and decreased accuracy. Overcutting can occur due to poor electrode selection, incorrect parameter settings, or improper machine alignment. To avoid this mistake, it is important to carefully plan the cutting path and ensure that the machine is properly aligned.
Inadequate workpiece preparation: Proper preparation of the workpiece, including cleaning and leveling, is essential for achieving accurate and high-quality results. Failure to adequately prepare the workpiece can lead to poor surface finish, decreased accuracy, and premature electrode wear. To avoid this mistake, it is important to carefully clean and level the workpiece before beginning the machining process.

2024.05.17 03:32 justareddituser202 Career Changer/Grad School

Hey everyone,
I’ve been lurking on this thread for a long time. I’m a mid career teachecoach considering a career pivot to the supply chain industry. I’m just wondering what would be the best route to do that in y’all’s opinion?
My state has an online MS in supply chain management at one of the local state schools and an online MBA in supply chain management at another state school. Both are very cost effective. Would this be a good idea for entry? Would could I expect? What is a decent entry level salary?
I currently have a BS in physical education and MA in physical education. Honestly I’m just burned out of the educational system after 15 years and need something with more growth and more family flexibility. Teaching/coaching requires 60-70 hour weeks for 10 months out of the year and other summer responsibilities with the expectation to continue to deal with erratic student behaviors and other unrealistic expectations.
Upon researching many career possibilities this field caught my attention and I think my skills would transition over nicely probably with some additional training. I’m thinking buyer or some type of procurement job.
Any advice/feedback to help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

2024.05.17 02:46 I_AM_STEPHEN_HAWKING Laid off 5 months into my new grad job, how screwed am I?

I graduated w/ my MS in December 2023 and started working in January 2024 (return offer from my summer 2023 internship). My company is very small (<25 people) and today I was laid off along w/ 5 others as part of a cost-cutting measure. My manager and the COO are willing to write me rec letters if needed.
My lease isn't over till next January, I need to pay off some 0% APR credit cards by the end of the year, and my student loan payments start next month. If you're in my situation (<1 YOE aka new grad in all but name) just how screwed am I? If it's relevant at all, I'm in the DFW area.

2024.05.17 02:35 fuwnyulk Is paying for an MSCS at NYU Courant with a private loan worth it?

Hi everyone,
I just got admitted to the MSCS program at NYU Courant starting Fall 2024. It was my only admission among 7 other schools I'd applied to this year (some of them higher in ranking, some lower). I am super hyped about the admission because NYU seems like a solid school based on the professors' research and courses. However, considering my financial situation, I am dubious about whether enrolling is the best choice for my career in the long term.
My admission didn't include any scholarships, and I didn't apply for any external funding sources this year. I will have to pay for the total cost of attendance (90K per year) with a private student loan. I live in the US as a pending political asylum seeker and am not eligible for FAFSA. I also don't think I will be able to find a US citizen to co-sign my loan with me, and the only option is to take it at a company like MPOWER or Prodigy Finance at 13% without a co-signer (instead of 7% with a US co-signer). How bad of an idea to go for this? I've read on Reddit people saying private loans are terrible, and if you are an international student who can't pay out of pocket/doesn't have a scholarship, simply don't go to that school. I wonder if it's different for CS because there is almost a guarantee of a high-paying job (I have full work authorization), given that I study well.
My ultimate career goal is to do research in industry and develop SOTA AI models like Gemini. Right now, I don't have any professional ML or research experience and don't have a shot at a PhD program. I hoped the MS program would help me get started with ML research. After my master's, I planned to continue to a PhD program (the lender should let me defer my loan payments) to improve my future job prospects.
Is enrolling in NYU like this bad/good for me? What other career choices should I consider? I am 27 years old now and want to optimize this new journey for time efficiency. I would appreciate any advice!

2024.05.17 02:34 fuwnyulk Is paying for an MSCS at NYU Courant with a private loan worth it?

Hi everyone,
I just got admitted to the MSCS program at NYU Courant starting Fall 2024. It was my only admission among 7 other schools I'd applied to this year (some of them higher in ranking, some lower). I am super hyped about the admission because NYU seems like a solid school based on the professors' research and courses. However, considering my financial situation, I am dubious about whether enrolling is the best choice for my career in the long term.

2024.05.17 02:23 Fresh_Shoulder_3267 10 years and now this...

I was in a long relationship, as you can see 10 years. We were engaged and were raising her son who is now 12 and it was all ripped away because of me. A little backstory first. We were together for 10 years. I'm American she and her son are British. We did the long distance thing so well that people asked our advice! We would see each other several times a year and so forth. At year 4 I asked her to marry me and she said yes, only after asking her son (who is autistic) if I could be his dad first. When he agreed then I asked his mother. I didn't have much back then and worked a crummy job but I kept advancing. We do great and plan everything for 2020. We all know what happened that year. So the borders were shut down and we lost all of our non refundable deposits and whatnot. So we kept plugging along and vowed to not let this deter us. I'm a truck driver and I kept getting better chances at the apple of financial security. I became an owner operator in 2021 which if you don't know means all the maintenance, fuel, insurance so on and so forth come out of my pocket but I keep 76% of the bill compared to 21% as I was getting at the time. The first year we did phenomenal and we thought we were set. Then we learned two traumatic things in back to back weeks. First is that she had remitting MS and the next week to the day was that her dad had pancreatic cancer. I did all I could being in another country just before the borders opened up to be supportive and tried to be there as best I could. We thought maybe being it has been what has been 3 years since we saw each other we wouldn't love each other but that wasn't the case. I loved her more every minute and here she did with me too. Fast forward to last year and her dad passed almost to this very day as I post this we're only a week short. So with everything going on I stay to the side and just help her grieve and I have to come back to work. Also during this time my truck crapped the bed and I needed a new engine and that cost me over 40k! That with the failed wedding cost I was already in debt over it started to burden me financially to the point where I would carry these things close to the vest but I became very upset at the mention of money. For the last year I've been pushing hard to get out of debt so that I could provide for them the life I thought they deserved. Working 70 hours weeks over and over and over and over. I started to put a huge dent into the debt but it cost me.
It cost me by being exhausted mentally and physically that I would say things I didn't mean, not in anger or maliciously. Just really really really poor verbage. She went through a relapse and two new lesions appeared to go with the original two we knew about. I said this phrase that haunts me to this day... "If it's not damn COVID, it's my truck, if it's not my truck, then it's your stupid brain getting these lesions. When is it ever going to be our turn?"
Unbeknownst to me that phrase festered in her head. We just had an amazing few weeks at Easter and went to see the eclipse and everything during that time was great. Heck we even rescued two dogs to live with us and our current dachshund. She even said so herself. So they fly home to England. We talk a ton that first week she's home but something doesn't feel right she said and she just wanted to come home to me. Come that Monday she goes to the doctor. She has another relapse, a new lesion giving her vertigo. They keep her in the hospital for the week. We talk every night during their visiting hours over the phone bc I'm still here and she's there. The Friday comes and she's supposed to be released that Saturday. On that Friday I say "let me know when you get home, I love you." She agrees and says she loves me.
Saturday comes 3 short weeks ago.
I'm waiting for the phone call.
I don't get one, so I start panicking and thinking the worst. I watch the clock and it's past visiting hours and during quiet time so I can't call. I barely sleep. Sunday morning I get up early with the 5 hour time difference and call as soon as I can and she answered happily and said "oh I got home yesterday". I asked her if she's ok and why she didn't let me know. She doesn't have an answer.
We don't talk the rest of the day.
Monday I get word that we are one step closer on the K1 and K2 visas. (Which is a head ache of a whole different story). I talk to our son and he said "Mum's sleeping" I said ok and I'll talk to her later bc there's surprise. So that next day I go out and get her the car she was eyeing when we went car shopping over Easter. I talk to our son again and he said "Mum's sleeping"
Wednesday (three weeks ago) I call and she answers and I tell her I got some huge news but she said she did too. I let her go first and she tells me "it's over and you probably feel it too. I told my mum you were probably packing up my stuff and things are just different now but gimme some time I may come back". I sit with my phone in my hand completely and she asked what my news was and I told her "the visas are in the final stages" and i show her the keys to her certified murano. She sobs uncontrollably and said she didn't know as I sit stunned. She then goes to tell me "go ahead and say it that my stupid brain strikes again". I said it one time in 10 years.
So we explain to our son that things will be a little different and she just needs sometime to process things and the steroids she was on were very powerful. So I go on messaging him and talking and waiting on her. Then last Friday we were on the phone like old times and it was for 5 hours! I thought this was just a bump in the road and I keep giving her the time and we will be back to normal. Today she hit me with its over and she's never coming back to me. That since becoming an owner operator truck driver I've been irritable and worry too much about money and that I work so much it's effected us. I lay here now still shocked because I don't get it.
I have nearly 70k in debt bc of the original wedding and the engine. A new car I can't return. I'm living in a house she helped pick. Have two 15 plus year commitments with the dogs who I won't give up. She's dropping me like I'm a slimy rock, her son (who hasn't talked to me since Sunday which isn't normal) isn't happy but doesn't want to talk to me because it can upset her and set off her MS. Then on top of it the contract I drive for is cutting back production meaning less money and work.
I know this was a lot and if anyone reads this all thank you for reading. I just have to get this off my chest bc it's all so crushing to me
I have decided to sell the rig and find a company job I am dealing with my debts which was her idea during Easter. Still doesn't change the fact that since leaving here on the 12th of April to now my whole world changed for the worse and I don't get it.

If you ever are scammed, money sent through paypal, venmo, cashapp, zelle etc almost always ends up in a bank account that can be traced. There is some level of accountability. So I bumped the edge of the bottom screen a bit w the soft edge of MS Wireless Ergo keyboard, heard a pop and the screen splintered immediately.
Samsung rep is quoting out of warranty cost of about $1000 to replace the panel.
Anyone know of other options?
How are we suppose to transport these in a move? Its weaker than standard autoglass! I think a screen protector is needed too!

2024.05.16 23:22 Overall-Jellyfish734 Is there a difference in SWE post grad salary/salary progression if I go to GaTech vs CMU

I was lucky enough to get into both schools and was wondering if there’s a difference in where I go in terms of salary progression and starting salary.
Based on data published by cmu and GT the starting salaries are pretty similar. GT is 30k less however it also has a much larger CS department so if you take the top 50% of it then it’s probably very similar, but I’ve heard CMU can have better job progression?
Really trying to choose between these 2 schools so any other tips on how to choose would be much appreciated! Thankfully, My family wouldn’t go in debt paying for CMU and my parents are willing to support me, though cost is a factor that I know I’m considering.
I can get my BS in 3.5 years from CMU and BS+MS in 3.5 years from GaTech

2024.05.16 23:20 EqualDig5948 IISER Kolkata is a scam. Period

The ONLY case it is worth it? IF at the age of 16-17:
(1) You know what research is (ACTUALLY is not the popular science version)
(2) You have already studied enough/understood to be highly specified to a subject and domain at that age
(3) It REALLY helps if you come from a community/home which is ingrained in the academia pain (to wit: Bengalis, South Indians mostly)
OR
(4) You are completely apathetic to any other career outcome and can stone yourself to do a PhD no matter what
IF you can satisfy 3/4 of these criteria: Congratulations, IISER makes sense
In any other case. LITERALLY any other background/feeling/hope/aspiration
IISER is the worst hell to be in. Career, personal, mental all outcomes drawn. You have left a husk of a person struggling not to lose your mind for two worthless pieces of paper if not doing a highly-specialized PhD.
Plus if your IISER does not have BS exit/your parents do not agree for this/you are lured by getting an "MS": You are done for. This extra year sucks the life out of you more than the coursework.
Please, save yourself. If you are so interested please first pick a BSc from a decent college near you. I guarantee you won't lose out on anything substantial in your future research career. THen if you still want to, appear for GATE/NET etc. and pick an MSc from IIT/IISER. PLEASE do not fall in this integrated degree trap. The administration takes NO responsibility for your career outcomes: either industry or academia. You are left in the wild either way.
Means? Even if you agree with the "no placements" policy, there is NO direct help provided for landing a PhD as well. Sure, there are recommendations, mails forwarded about open positions etc. But there is an equally good chance to be left jobless and PhD-less, mooching around with your master's project till you land a position YOURSELF (no help from IISER).
I am in the final week of my MS thesis and my hand is shaking writing that. I feel the trauma and trembling looking at the horrible walls of IISER Kolkata which have shaped my nightmare. This won't be the review from people for whom this worked out.
I am just showing you how horribly bad it can go if it doesn't. The opportunity cost and risk is not worth it unless you are 100% percent sure. I am not saying this number lightly; let that sink in.
Please. Just please.Then,

2024.05.16 22:31 mrszubris A Gentle Reminder: Get your eyes checked! You might be needlessly overstimulated!

My personal history includes a catastrophic set of eye injuries due to critically high spinal pressure when I was 16. I ruptured both of my optic discs and was very much partially blind for many months, so I since, have avoided eye doctors like the PLAGUE, while also being highly meticulous about my eye care, so as to not HAVE to go to the doctor. I also am going through a preliminary "looks like MS" diagnosis so I have a lot of "otherthings" I can blame my eye issues on including chronic Reynauds and Sjogrens-LIKE symptoms highly related to my WML (white matter lesions) and HEDS. (hypermobile ehlers danlos).
However in the last year or two I have what I can only describe as "felt more autistic" LOL? MORE hypersensitive to light, MORE easily overstimulated and tired out by things I typically enjoy a lot, an some weird convergence insufficiency (not double vision side to side, but the vertical 'halo' or separation on words) which can absolutely be specific to one of the WML I have in my brain! Just SO MUCH more light sensitive, SO MUCH more tired on hikes, and serious depth perception issues once my dyspraxia starts kicking in. So I could have ignore it for THAT reason too until my neuro appt in July to get another referral to a neuro optho which is what I've probably needed to be monitored by for the last 20 years and didn't due to C-PTSD from the event.
I finally "logic gated" myself into going, which is sometimes how my ADHD and Autism have to fight to get me to do something good for myself, thinking "he has the most recent imaging of the back of your eye and optic nerve (lol 8 years since I got hit in the eye at work and went to see him) and will now have comparative for you to take TO the neuro with you, you are going to get an eye exam one way or another, might as well do it". So I did.
Well, as it turns out, my left eye which took the MOST damage to the optic disc and still has its own scar that made a secondary blind spot that is NOT my retina (lol) has gone VERY far sighted all of the sudden (8 years lol). My right eye is SO crisply 20/20 that it is exhausting the hell out of itself trying to FAR sight match the other when I'm driving (my favorite hyper focus activity now that I can't ride horses) , and then the left eye is SO far sighted now that when I'm doing my up close fiber work its jerking and twitching trying to fuse a far and close eye. Its not TOO uncommon, and if it didnt make my eyes so tired all the time, its REALLY great for identifying animals in the field LOL. I have one zoom eyeball when I close my eye.
Anyway, I now have an RX for glasses with literally only one useful lens, (they both will have blue light blocking), and have been told it will improve my overall fatigue and overstimulation and effort by a lot! I am going to see the cost of a pair of sunglasses, because I wear sunglasses if I'm even in a too bright room and so if I am driving I will DEFINITELY be in sunglasses not regular ones.
Anyway, we will see how it helps, and because it was immediately improved by him putting test lenses on me he is pretty confident that at least at THIS TIME, that white matter lesion is NOT what is causing the convergence insufficiency.
Moral of the story: Sometimes things are such a slow creep, and our interoception is so shitty, that we don't notice something is making us really really really wasted mentally speaking, and sometimes, its a very normal thing, that would make ANY humans brain very tired, just ours especially so.
Go get your eyes checked pals! <3 You can even go to Costco for a VERY low fee for a full eye exam as I know health care for everyone in the US can be tenable at best <3

2024.05.16 20:36 Wooden_Register_6325 Rutgers-Camden or Rowan University?

I have been accepted into Rutgers University-Camden and Rowan University for MS in Data Science. I got the International Chancellor's Scholarship($20k for the whole program) from Rutgers-Camden, which puts the cost of attendance per year at $48,000. Rowan's cost of attendance per year is $37,000, so it goes better with my financial situation; but since I did not get a scholarship from Rowan, will it affect my chances of getting an F1 visa?

2024.05.16 20:28 got2run5 Best bang for buck insulation upgrades on new build

We're attempting to evaluate what we should be upgrading on a new build. The builder contracts this out and is playing middle-man with the insulation subs and it's clear that in order to get this priced out and potentially added to the build, I need to ask for exactly what I want. We're already at our budget, but we plan to live here for a long time and want to reduce our costs down the road. The house is a ranch with basement in zone 5A.
Included in base cost:
Walls: R19 Batts w/ 7/16 OSB Sheathing
Ceilings: R50 Blown in
Vaulted Ceilings: Blown in as space allows up to R50 (with our design they expect to be able to hit R50)
Basement box sills: 2" closed cell foam
Exterior walls and attic ceilings have vapor barrier
Priced Upgrade Options
R60 blown in attic upgrade: $850
R21 Wall upgrade (batts): $1250
R23 BIB (Blown in) wall insulation: $2750
2.5” foam (R-19) wall upgrade. . . $9,000.00
We've asked about exterior insulation beneath the siding and on top of the sheathing but he hasn't priced it yet as well as air sealing. We can ask additional questions, but I'm not sure what questions to ask or have priced since the builder isn't doing a good job of communicating the options the insulation subcontractor has. Additionally, at what point would an HRV or ERV be necessary?
