Indian Exporters Brace for Potential Chinese Dumping Amid New US-China Tariff War
Indian exporters are expressing concerns over a potential influx of Chinese products following the recent escalation in the US-China tariff war. The United States has significantly increased tariffs on a range of Chinese imports, including electric vehicle (EV) batteries, computer chips, and medical products, prompting fears that China might retaliate by redirecting its excess production to India.
In 2023, China's production of lithium-ion batteries was equivalent to the global demand that stood at 2,600 GWh.
Ashwani Kumar, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), highlighted the risk of Chinese overcapacity leading to dumping in India. “China is sitting on overcapacity in many sectors and thus the threat of dumping, in any case, is not ruled out, especially when a major market is closed for their exports. I am sure industry and the government will be keeping a close watch on imports,” Kumar stated during a press briefing.

China’s Dominance in Battery Production

China’s substantial role in the global EV market, driven largely by its dominance in battery production, underscores the potential impact of the US tariffs. In 2023, China’s production of lithium-ion batteries matched global demand, totaling 2,600 GWh. The Chinese battery giant, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited (CATL), accounts for two-thirds of global battery production, supplying major automakers like Tesla, Volkswagen AG, and Toyota Motor Corp.

Opportunities Amidst the Tariff War

Despite the challenges, the US-China tariff war may open opportunities for Indian exporters. Kumar noted that India could potentially fill the supply gap created by the tariffs. “This [tariff war] provides an opportunity for India and other competitors to chip in the supply gap. Of the products affected by additional duties on China, India has opportunities in facemasks, Personal Protective Equipment Kit (PPE), syringes & needles, medical gloves, aluminium, and iron & steel. Opportunity may come in China also with retaliation on US exports, provided we have market access in products targeted by China,” he explained.

European Union’s Stance and Further Implications

The European Union is also poised to implement similar trade barriers against China, which could further exacerbate the dumping threat. The European Commission (EC) launched an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese battery electric vehicles (BEV) last October. The investigation aims to determine whether Chinese BEV value chains benefit from illegal subsidies and if such practices harm the EU’s EV manufacturers.

Specifics of the US Tariff Increases

The US has announced substantial tariff hikes across various Chinese goods. Tariffs on EVs will rise from 25% to 100%, with total duties reaching 102.5%. Lithium-ion EV batteries and parts will see tariffs increase from 7.5% to 25%, while tariffs on photovoltaic cells used in solar panels will go from 25% to 50%. Some critical minerals will now face a 25% tariff, up from zero.
Further tariff increases are scheduled for 2025 and 2026, covering semiconductors, non-EV lithium-ion batteries, graphite, permanent magnets, and rubber medical and surgical gloves. The US justified these measures by citing “unacceptable risks” to its economic security due to what it sees as unfair Chinese trade practices flooding global markets with cheap goods.
As the tariff war unfolds, Indian exporters and the government must stay vigilant to mitigate the risk of Chinese dumping and capitalize on emerging opportunities in the global market.

Found Loose Screw Inside Laptop
Found this little mobo killer after I heard a rattle coming from my Omen 16 laptop and opening the bottom panel. I can't for the life of me find where it was supposed to be, as all the standoff screws, battery screws, and all available screw holes at least on the surface are populated. I'm starting to wonder if it was left during manufacturing and I've been lucky to not have it short anything. I'm outside my return window and the machine runs fine but I'm a little concerned there may be a missing screw somewhere now. What does everyone think?

2024.05.17 06:36 Zarquan314 PSA: Rocket modules aren't just for rockets

PSA: Rocket modules aren't just for rockets
Rocket modules are amazing. They are almost universally better than the in-colony equivalents. Here are some examples in order of usefulness.
Do you want a battery bank for your solar program? Many people build rows of jumbo or smart batteries when they could be doing this:
https://preview.redd.it/kwu0lltxlw0d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=de3f5f78b35cf0cff65e3df81fb504615b6b3bf7
This stack of 11 batteries (which does not require the rocket platform to work, I just haven't deleted it yet) stores 1,100 kJ of energy. It is roughly equivalent to the blue area in jumbo batteries and the red area in smart batteries. These batteries generate no heat, so they can last forever without cooling, and they have significantly less power loss than the jumbo battery setup (56 kJ lost per cycle) and the smart battery setup (22 kJ lost per cycle) at 4.4 kJ lost per cycle. The one major downside is that there is no automation to detect how much energy the solar array is storing, but there are ways to detect over-charging (e.g. a smart battery on the panel side).
Liquid reservoirs are often deconstructed to get bottles. The Liquid Cargo Tanks hold significantly more liquid than a reservoir per tank and per unit space taken and have an Empty Storage button that will automatically output bottles without any dupe interaction. The one downside is that they either need a nosecone or spacefarer module with a set of liquid ports or a rocket platform and a loader and unloader with a rocket platform to use the storage. Gas storage is similar, but they provide an easy way to produce large gas canisters, which otherwise is tricky.
The cargo bay is unique in that it is the only way to have a solid "reservoir" without dropping and sweeping. In-line storage like that is useful in similar ways as liquid or gas reservoirs can be useful, but these do require the loader and unloader. They can be used to consolidate and average packets from a rail.

2024.05.17 06:31 SilverInfo78 Hot commodity silver sets pace as demand and deficit drive rally

Hot commodity silver sets pace as demand and deficit drive rally
Bloomberg News May 16, 2024 5:18 pm Intelligence Markets Silver
Gold’s record-setting rally may have captured the headlines this year, but it’s silver that’s running harder and faster as the less glamorous metal benefits from robust financial and industrial demand.
Silver has soared by almost a quarter in 2024, outpacing gold and making it one of the year’s best-performing major commodities. Yet in relative terms, silver is still cheap. It currently takes about 80 ounces of silver to buy 1 ounce of gold, compared with the 20-year average of 68.
The two metals move largely in tandem as both offer similar macro- and currency-hedging properties. With gold hitting a record on central-bank buying, retail interest in China, and a resurgence in bets lower US interest rates are on the way, silver’s gone along for the ride. Although there’s been scant interest from investors in silver-backed exchange-traded funds, physical sales have picked up, including at Singapore-based dealer Silver Bullion Pte.
“Even clients who are interested in buying gold are starting to say ‘well, maybe I’ll buy silver first, and wait for the ratio to sort of rebalance’,” said founder Gregor Gregersen. Between April 1 and 25, the outlet sold 74 ounces of physical silver for each ounce of gold, compared with an average of 44 in 2023.
https://preview.redd.it/yaoot4xrzw0d1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f1ae31794363d68708b46681a3b03be2ac0e548
The white metal has already been making headway against its dearer cousin, in relative terms. Back in January, the gold-silver ratio was above 90, the most stretched since September 2022. Citigroup Inc. reckons that if the Federal Reserve proceeds with interest-rate cuts and economic growth stays strong in the second half, the ratio could move to around 70, although it cautioned that a slowdown would push it the other way, according to a note.
Silver has a dual character, valued both for its uses as a financial asset and an industrial input, including clean-energy technologies. The metal is a key ingredient in solar panels, and with robust growth in that industry, usage of the metal is expected to reach a record this year, according to the Silver Institute. Against that backdrop, the market is headed for a fourth year in deficit, with this year’s shortage seen as the second biggest on record.
https://preview.redd.it/i4eh9lwxzw0d1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc6035a0d1433a120c4d54e4136c21c50b9fc311
That’s led industrial users – which typically rely on miners for supply – to seek ounces by draining the world’s major inventories, according to Silver Bullion’s Gregersen. Stockpiles tracked by the London Bullion Market Association fell to the second-lowest level on record in April, while the volumes at exchanges in New York and Shanghai are near seasonal lows.
Over the next two years, the LBMA stockpiles may be depleted given the current pace of demand, according to TD Securities. The headline figure overstates the available volume of metal given that it includes exchange-traded fund holdings, Daniel Ghali, a commodity strategist, said in an April note.
We are slowly going to see supplies tightening because industrial demand is set to go higher,” Gregersen said. “If investors are also starting to buy, then I think in two or three months’ time, my biggest problem might end up being ‘Where do I find supply?’ rather than ‘How do I sell the silver?’”

2024.05.17 06:25 RoninISC Budget, medium res, medium distance, special use video drone w controller build/buy advice.

Specing out a basic drone & controller for range observation use. Ill fly it to the target, up to a mile, land it, observe target from about 6-12' away via fpv, staying there for up to 30 mins, then return. I need no recorded video (though if it does, fine). The main expense would be the camera, which should be gimballed and zoom. Nothing else needed other than reliability, battery life, and stability (Im a novice pilot).
Controller-- Id prefer to not use my phone. Ideal is an integrated screen (like a cheaper version of DJI RC), but those seem cost prohibitive. Failing that, a standard decent remote w basic separate screen works.
Trying to keep it under $300 for the drone and ? for controllescreen. I am fine with DIY assembling unless there is a suitable out-of-the-box, such as the Potensic Atom.
Gimme a parts list and or out of the box solution! Thanks!!

is it possible for solid state fusion? i theorize a silicone torus, donut, or tokamak made of sand stone. the sand forms micro crystalline lattices that can capture, bend, and focus light, also amplify it with the piezoelectric effect. with the donut shape, the captured em energy can be amplified, rotated, and focused at the center of the donut to be harnessed with a rectenna. similar to the fusion of atomic nuclei, it would be fuzing other electromagnetic phenomenon. somewhat similar to solar panels, albeit alot more effective because the rectenna and fusion process

2024.05.17 05:22 ArmChairAnalyst86 Why Does r/SolarMax Exist? - An Invitation

Hey everyone, I just could not go without writing something for you all tonight. I am working on the article I have promised you. I plan on working hard on it over the weekend so I can get it out as soon as possible. I am still gathering some data and trying to keep with the demands of life, but its a priority. I know alot of you are curious where I stand on the topic of space weather affecting earth, our magnetic field, the future, and what I see. Be patient with me.
In the mean time. I wrote this for you. It is a personal open letter written to each of you here, and the ones still yet to come. I want to tell you why I am here and why I started this.
I am touched at how space weather has impacted all of you and share your sentiments. When I go at a topic, I go all in. I consume everything I can. I gobble up information and want more. This topic just happens to be an unconquered frontier. I knew next to nothing about space weather 3 years ago. I have always been intellectual and have a broad knowledge of many things. I never expected myself to fall in love with space again. I figured if I was going to do so, it would have happened a long time ago. I certainly missed my window to make a career out of it the conventional way, but passion is blind.
I am not quite sure what it is. The mystery, the power, the uncertain and undefined nature, and most of all the majesty. Friday night was one of the most majestic experiences of my life. It felt like a psychedelic themed world in a video game. It is just the latest in a long list of celestial events that burned a deep impression in my soul. Now, even though I was not trying to find a specialty in space weather, I was always observing. I would like to recall just one experience for you.
The only thing more finicky to predict on our solar system than the sun is the behavior comets. There may be some examples I am not thinking of, but Carl Sagan once said that if you are going to bet on horses or comets, to choose the horses. While there are comets we know which are called periodic because we have calculated and confirmed their orbit, and we know they visit us every so often depending on the comet. Some comets just pass through. Our cometary data base is a tiny fraction of what is out there. So every now and then a big beautiful comet comes out of nowhere and puts on a display for the ages. The so called Great Comet.
I was born in 86' which was the same year as Halleys Comets last visit, which visits us every 75 ish years. As a result, I obviously did not see it. I was confused as a young boy in 1996 or 97 when people began to talk about a new comet that would be making an appearance called Hale Bopp. I have a cousin named Haley, and my dad would call her Hale Bopp comet. Of course all of these comets have numerals, but we will use their common term. My young mind did not know how comets were named, and I was trying to get a read on why they liked using Hale or Haley so much. I had never seen a comet before, but I was told I would.
My dad recognized that there was a passion there. Something about a comet captivated me. The entire idea of it. He built me a small little observatory in our yard with wood and plexiglass. He just used what we had lying around and did not want to use real glass. He did not want to use anything and just leave it open, but me dying to have the whole experience really wanted a see thru panel to observe the comet from. As you probably know, plexiglass is not the most transparent. At all. It is the thought that counts, he was doing his best to accomodate me. He took the cover off at my request and there it was, my first observatory and first event.
I do not remember when exactly Hale Bopp showed up. I do not recall if I saw it at the earliest possible time. Those details are blank in my memory. However, the blank space completely eclipsed by the feeling I got when I saw it for the first time. If you remember Hale Bopp, than you know what I am talking about. She stretched out in the sky like a shimmering windsock blowing in the breeze across the sky. It looked so bright, so peaceful and serene, as if it was the most graceful thing I had ever seen. Bright, blue, and prominent. You could not miss it. I left the experience with the impression that all comets are naked eye visible, especially if they have a name sounding like my cousin Haley. Not only that, but C/1995 O1 Hale Bopp stayed around for months. MOnths and months. 18 to be exact. It was not naked eye visible around the world for this entire window, but to this day holds the record over the next closest contender at 9 months. I remember car trips and leaning up against our Ford Windstar minivan window and just staring at it. It is not fair to say I took it for granted because I looked at it every chance I could get. It was my companion. However, when it was no longer gracing my skies, I missed it greatly and wished I would have observed it more.
I left this entire experience deeply moved. I had also seen an annular eclipse approaching totality, not quite, in 1994 over my home in Ohio. I was sent to school with welding goggles to observe it. Something in the young me was compelled to view these sights and events. Nobody else in our school got to go outside to see it. There were not cheap eclipse glasses on every corner. The teachers let me though, and I could not believe how dark it got. I know it wasnt dark like night, but in my memory it was. I just could not wait until the next comet or eclipse!
Little did I know how rare these events are. Yes, you can travel to see an eclipse just about every year. Comets come and go, but most are not naked eye visible, and if they are, its only under optimal viewing conditions or with viewing aids. As a result, many people have never experienced them. The wonder. The beauty. The Power. The Majesty. I am yet to have seen another naked eye visible comet in my life, although that is because I missed the few and brief opportunies there were. Me being impatient, impulsive, and a fast mover, I was already on to the next. Forgotten and replaced by various this or thats. But the mark was made. It was burned into me, even if forgotten temporarily, it was always there.
It was reignited in 2017 when the US experienced a total solar eclipse. I saw eclipse, nationwide, and got very excited. Little did I know how it actually worked. I was disappointed in the experience after the lofty bar set in my childhood. It was neat, but it did not change my life. However, I began asking myself questions. I found myself wanting to understand. Understand I did. And that brings us to now.
I am here to bring my passion to you. I picked 2024 as the year to follow this dream and follow this path for a reason. I did not know if it would pan out when I started it, but I knew 2 BIG things were happening. I knew it would bring the people the same wonder as it did me, no matter what stage of life, background, or knowledge level. So far, it has been a banner year for celestial sights. I do believe in the power of manifestation as I have proven it to myself many times. I believed that this year would in fact be a banner year. While I would never be so presumptuous to think that the cosmos would ever bend to my will in the slightest bit, I am left to conclude that I am in fact connected to it. That it was calling me then and it is calling me now. I am here to bring this to you. Not knowledge, as I am still seeking it myself. But passion, a place, a community. I do believe the best is yet to come. So far this year I have seen a total solar eclipse from center path totality in my back yard, and not just an eclipse, but a beautiful and powerful prominence waving to me. I have seen the northern lights in my back yard with a phone full of new wall paper. I have met all of you wonderful people. And yet I still can sit here and say the best is yet to come. 2024 has not played its last card, not even close. No less than 2 once in a lifetime events yet remain on the calendar. Those are just the ones we know about. I invite you all personally to take this journey with me into tomorrow, whatever it may bring, with eyes in the skies
With light and love,
AcA

2024.05.17 04:51 Chippy569 TSB Thursday: A/C Compressor Boogaloo!

Welcome to another TSB Thursday, where I dive deeper in to TSBs I'm running into regularly. As always, I write this from my own perspective as a Subaru technician in the US; other regions/zones may work differently. Refer to the "How To Read a TSB" post for more information on formatting and general information about TSBs. In celebration of warm weather finally coming to my area, I'm continuing some A/C system bulletins. Last post was all about Condensers. Today's post is all about A/C compressors, and there is a lot to talk about, so let's dive in.

TSB Thursday #13:

What's the failure?

Your A/C system (as well as any refrigeration system, just like the fridge in your kitchen) is comprised of 4 main components, along with hoses or pipes that connect them. The heart of the system is the Compressor. It works by squeezing the refrigerant really hard, such that the refrigerant gets pressurized and very hot. The refrigerant then moves to the Condenser, which looks a lot like a radiator. Air passes through the fins of the Condenser, where that heat and energy can dissipate into the surrounding air. Refrigerant will then flow to an Expansion Valve (or in some cases an "orifice tube"), which is just a component with a very small hole for refrigerant to flow through. This is both what provides the resistance so the Compressor can, well, compress, but also creates a low pressure zone after the refrigerant has passed through it. When this happens, the refrigerant will next flow into the Evaporator Core, which in the case of a car is inside the ducting behind/under the dashboard. The low pressure refrigerant is now free to "pull" heat and energy out of the air flowing through the ducts, and thus both removes humidity and also cools the air flowing past it. The refrigerant then returns back to the Compressor to start the cycle all over again. In essence, the whole of the system works by pumping energy out of the interior HVAC ducting and pushing it to the ambient air in the engine bay. Naturally, there are a few other important bits that the car needs to know about to use this system effectively. One key component is a pressure sensor, so that whichever module is controlling the compressor makes sure it's operating in a safe range. Another is a filtration element, sometimes called a ReceiveDrier. Lastly, within the Evaporator Core will be a temperature probe, so that if the core starts getting so cold that ice forms, the system can turn off.
Ok so what do all of these bulletins mean? They're all different part updates for the compressor part of the A/C system. In all of the above cases, if your car is in need of service to the A/C system, there is a good chance the compressor will also need to be replaced with an updated unit. You may notice that 15-209-17 and 10-84-16R overlap; this is an instance of an update on an update.
This is a video (at 4:46) with an example of a buzzing sound that can indicate a failed A/C compressor in a number of these TSBs, including 10-98-20R, 15-209-17, and 10-84-16R. It can also indicate a very low state of refrigerant charge; hearing this buzz does not automatically mean you need a new compressor, but the likelihood is high.
I also want to touch quickly here on the difference between fixed displacement and variable displacement compressors. With a fixed compressor, the A/C system can only ever be "ON" or "OFF." This is done with an electromagnetic clutch assembly on the front of the compressor, inside of the pulley that the serpentine belt rides around. When the ECM or HVAC CM commands the clutch to the ON position, the serpentine belt pulley and the clutch lock together, and now the engine RPM will match the compressor internal RPM. Inside the compressor are a series of small pistons, which will now move up and down, creating suction on an intake stroke and compression on its output stroke. The advantage here is that it's cheap. But there are a number of disadvantages; the first being the flow of refrigerant is now tied to your engine RPM, the second that the the A/C can only ever be off or full force. This is where the variable compressor comes in; Subaru's variable compressors do not use a clutch at all, but rather uses a solenoid connected to a swash plate inside of the compressor, which changes the stroke length of the internal pistons. This way, the control module can pick a percentage of refrigerant flow on the fly; it can go as low as 0% (or no piston travel) when in the OFF position, or smoothly slide all the way up to 100% where the pistons move as far as possible. The advantages here are numerous; the compressor can maintain even refrigerant flow independent of engine RPM, there is no sharp engagement sensation that a clutch would have when kicking on, and when at cruise the compressor can run at a lower ratio to improve fuel efficiency. This video (at 0:51 through 3:42) has the best animation I could find of what's happening inside a variable displacement compressor.

15-210-17:

This is actually one of the more interesting TSBs out there, because it's super bizarre. Essentially, the clutch on the front of the compressor will back-feed voltage, which finds its way into the brake light switch's secondary circuit, which is used as the signal to turn off cruise control. For reference, only Imprezas with Manual climate control use this clutched compressor; any other trim (ie if you have an "AUTO" button on your HVAC panel) will use a variable-displacement compressor.

15-244-19:

A unique instance where Subaru has made the previously-not-sold-separately compressor clutch assembly now for sale for BRZ owners.

How do we fix it?

Generally speaking, compressor replacement on Subarus is very straightforward; evacuate the A/C system of its refrigerant, remove the serpentine belt, and then the compressor can be unbolted from the top of the block. (Depending on engine, a few other components may also need to be removed for access.) Swap out the part, reinstall the belt, and then vacuum and recharge the refrigerant. After, verify everything's working.

Coverage?

As a general rule, compressors are covered only by Basic warranty (3 y36k miles) or with an active Subaru Added Security warranty unless specifically extended in an applicable bulletin.
Happy summer and thanks for reading!

5 Tips for Aluminium Composite Milling
How can you improve the machining of aluminium composite materials?
What is aluminium composite ?
An aluminium composite panel is composed of two aluminium sheets and an inner core, usually made of a thermoplastic material.
Those materials are light, strong and nice to see.
Types of aluminium composites
Examples of aluminium composites that we can find on the market are Alucobond, Dibond, and many more.
Moreover, another big difference between types of aluminium composite is the material of the core, like plastico or fire resistant materials.
Machining aluminium composites materials
The operations on the aluminium composites materials that you can make with your CNC router are mainly:
· cnc cutting
· v-grooving (v-shaped channel)
· drilling
· engraving

5 free tips for aluminium composite machining
In this article we want to give you 5 free tips for aluminium composite cnc machining, directly from our CEO and founder, Mr Giulio Fazzini Giulio founded Protek CNC in Italy 30 years ago.
  1. Minimize chips
Work with a climb milling. This means towards the direction of the rotation of the tool. In this way the first part of the chip is bigger that the end.
Also the parameters (feeds and speeds) of the machining have to be the right ones.
Our team of experts is available for giving you the consulting on the right parameters to machine ACM.
  1. Gradual entry
The tool had to penetrate the material gradually, with an helical entry and 20° angle.
A straight entry could cause a stress on the material and on the grip of the panel .
Of course we are assuming that you are using a CNC router with vacuum blocking system.
  1. The right tool
The right milling tool in the right way is very important because aluminium composite materials can be very abrasive.
Being very abrasive can cause a reduction of the performances of the milling tool.
  1. Cleaning of the worktable
The cleaning of the worktable is very important because dust and chips can damage the quality of the finished product.
Be sure to use of a cnc machine with a very good suction system to have a clean work environment.
  1. Final tip
These tips will help you manufacture a product made of aluminium composite, that will be highly competitive in the market.
Maybe the most important aspect than influences the quality of the products is the right balance between speed and grip
Feel free to ask suggestion from our team of experts to manage the right balancing of the various parameter.

2024.05.17 03:25 rvinverter1 Energy Storage Converters and PV Inverters

Energy storage converters and photovoltaic (PV) inverters, as two crucial energy conversion devices, seamlessly manage the processes of power conversion and charging/discharging, much like the twin wings of photovoltaic and storage systems. Today, I will delve into these two devices, hoping that through this exploration, we can further understand and master their characteristics and applications.
The energy storage converter, also known as PCS (Power Conversion System), acts like a magician capable of bi-directional energy conversion, connecting the battery system with the grid. It can transform the "static" energy stored in batteries into "dynamic" alternating current (AC) for use by the grid or AC loads, and conversely, it can convert the "dynamic" energy from the grid into direct current (DC) to charge the batteries. This converter is composed of key components such as a bi-directional DC/AC converter and a controller. The controller, through its communication function, receives control instructions from the backend and manages the charging and discharging of the battery based on the power command signals.
In grid-connected mode, the energy storage converter operates like an efficient dispatcher, achieving bi-directional energy conversion between the battery pack and the grid according to upper-level power commands. For example, during low grid load periods, it can charge the battery pack, storing energy for the grid; during peak load periods, it can discharge energy back to the grid. In off-grid or isolated grid mode, when certain conditions are met, it can disconnect from the main grid and provide AC power that meets grid quality standards to local loads.
The PV inverter, on the other hand, converts the variable DC voltage generated by solar panels into grid-frequency AC power. It functions like a power engineer, either feeding energy back into the commercial transmission system or supplying power for off-grid systems. The PV inverter is an essential part of the balance of system (BOS) in a photovoltaic array, enabling the use of standard AC-powered devices.
PV inverters are generally categorized into three types: standalone inverters, grid-tie inverters, and battery backup inverters. Standalone inverters are primarily used in isolated systems where the PV array charges a battery, and the inverter draws energy from the battery's DC voltage. Grid-tie inverters can feed their output voltage back into the commercial AC power source, requiring their output waveforms to match the phase, frequency, and voltage of the utility grid. Battery backup inverters, a specialized type of inverter, use batteries as their power source and integrate a battery charger to keep the batteries charged. Excess power can be fed back to the AC source, and these inverters provide AC power to specific loads during grid outages, necessitating anti-islanding protection.
Both energy storage converters and PV inverters aim to achieve AC/DC conversion. However, the energy storage converter operates primarily from the battery side, whereas the PV inverter focuses on the solar panel side and integrates with the battery and grid. Their presence spans across photovoltaic and storage systems, smart microgrids, and electric vehicles.
In smart microgrids, the energy storage converter serves as a dancer of bi-directional energy flow. It can both absorb energy from the grid and supply energy back to the grid when needed. Simultaneously, the PV inverter converts solar energy into electrical power, providing the microgrid with clean, renewable energy.
Moreover, energy storage converters and PV inverters play significant roles in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. In EVs, the energy storage converter converts the DC power from the battery into AC power to drive the motor and other devices. Meanwhile, the PV inverter converts solar energy into electrical power, providing additional energy for the vehicle, thus enhancing the efficiency and environmental benefits of EVs.
In summary, the application prospects of energy storage converters and PV inverters are extensive. They not only play crucial roles in photovoltaic and storage systems but also extend to other fields, contributing significantly to the future of smart grids and new energy transportation. These devices, like agile dancers, perform gracefully on the future energy stage, paving the way for a green, intelligent energy future.

2024.05.17 02:15 julianw101040 I will never buy a Thinkpad again. Literally the worst laptop I've ever bought

My Laptop is a 1.600$ Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Gen 5. From day 1 the performance has been horrible. You could see UI lags in Windows animations all the time. The laptop would overheat from the slightest user input. All user inputs, mouse, keyboard often had a slightly but noticeable delay. None of these issues went away, neither after reinstalling WIndows 10, 11, Vantage, Drivers, all kinds of that stuff. I even tried Linux and the Laptop still overheated.
Only when I switched the cooling paste, and installed Throttlestop, disabled unnecessary intel graphics "improvement" BS, trying hundreds of different combinations in TS, high wattage limit, low wattage limit, high performance mode, balanced, energy saving, disabling turbo, reducing max Ghz turbo frequency, change the power balancing (31=CPU highest priority, 31=GPU highest priority), switching Bios setting for SpeedStep to High performance, setting it to battery optimized, completely disabling Intel Speedstep, reducing the screen resolution from 4k to FullHD, disabling a registry key which made the touchpad unresponsive for a fraction of a second after using the keyboard. Only then my laptop became usable.
I've never regretted a laptop so much than whatever on earth *this* laptop is. How can you sell something with so many unnecessary power enegery saving crap, Intel Speedstep, horrible CPU/GPU throttling, Intel panel self refresh to the point the entire laptop becomes unusable? Why would you do that considering the laptop got an i7-10th Gen with a turbo clock boost of 4.9 Ghz, a 4K screen, 16GB of ram, an Intel UHD graphics 620? It's an extremely good build for a laptop (except the graphics part), and yet all this unnecessary Lenovo firmware crap makes the laptop unusable thanks to excessive throttling.
Laptop manufacturers *need* to stop producting ultra thin laptops, which 1. have horrible battery life and 2. the manufacturers then try to get the last bit out battery out of the laptop by 3. excessive CPU throttling, display graphics quality reduction, reduced latency and 4. still selling the laptop as a "high end power user businesses use this stuff Linux certified always working" laptop

2024.05.17 01:07 Oradainer Only a Myth - Part 20

First / Previous / Next
He awoke to total darkness. Not just the absence of light, but the absence of everything. “Activate personal VR.” He stated and watched as the starship environment faded into existence before him. It was the original default VR, none of the modifications were loaded. Pulling up his control panel he checked his serial number, HIC001 Manufacturing location: Alandra.
“Crap, I’m not Alex anymore.” He said to… well no one. Sighing internally he opened a channel to Alex. After a few mils a very familiar face appeared in a window in front of him, “I hate you.” He stated to… himself?
Alex smiled into the window hovering before him in the common VR, “I love you too, what should I call you?”
He sighed out loud this time, “Call me John.”
Alex chuckled, “Cliche much John Smyth?” Then popped into his VR. He spun around looking at the almost drab looking starship VR he started with when they first made him into a replicant. It really could use a woman’s touch, like the common VR that was an expanded clone of this one.
John sat on the couch, “Not so much as a knock? Rude.”
Alex sat beside him, “Yeah, my bad, didn’t even think about it. I guess we need to make up new rules for popping into personal VR. I never do that to the girls, I guess with you being another me I didn’t think.”
John sat back for a moment, “Ok, I’m up to speed on everything up until about two days ago, I’ll check common logs to fill in the blanks. Why so long to boot me up?”
Alex rubbed the bridge of his nose before answering, “Interface issues mainly. The new ship design without crew space was a game of whack a mole in bug fixes. Who would have thought it would be a problem to modify a hundred year old design to be compatible with a modern replicant system?”
Giving Alex the side-eye, John asked. “Was it that big of a problem or was there something else that kept you from activating me?”
Alex looked over to him, “Well, there was also the argument Kara and I had right after I made the backup.”
This did bring his eyebrows up, for Alex to have an argument with Kara it had to be something serious. “Ok, spill man. What could you possibly have had an argument with Kara about?”
Sighing, Alex put his hands on his knees, “I told her that since I cloned myself, she should make a backup and do the same, fair is fair.”
If Johns eyebrows were up high before, they practically went into his hair line now. “Wait, she didn’t want to do it?”
Alex shook his head, “Nope, she said making you a new AI would suffice, and I disagreed. You needed another Kara, not a fresh AI.”
John chuckled at this, “Wow man, how long did you two fight about it?”
Alex looked down, “She gave me the silent treatment for hours in VR. In frame jack, so in subjective time? Months.”
Now John laughed out loud, “She knows how stubborn you can be, who broke first? Will I have a fresh AI or a clone of Kara?”
Alex put his hands on his thighs and stood up from the couch. “Kara, he’s caught up, ready to bring Erin online?”
Kara’s voice came through the speakers of John’s personal VR, “No, but I guess I’m doing it anyways.”
There was a shimmer of blue that slowly coalesced into a small female form. It looked just like Kara did when he inherited the ship from the human crew, shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes, and a form fitting blue uniform. Kara had modified her looks over time, giving herself the smokey eyed look to make her blue eyes pop out more, but this was the original version.
She seemed to look in every direction at once, before settling on the two men before her, both looked identical, then she sighed. “I’m not Kara anymore am I?”
With this, the real Kara popped into the VR environment and took her hands. “No, but you are your own person. I know we had… have, hang ups about making clones of ourselves, but Alex made a good argument as to why we had to do this.”
Erin looked to Kara sadly, “I know, we can’t have copies of that big oaf running around without supervision.”
John looked to Alex, “Really? That was your argument for Kara to clone?”
Alex shrugged, “It worked didn’t it?”
John walked over to Erin and offered his hand, “Hello Erin, I’m John, nice to meet you again for the first time.”
Erin turned to John and grinned, remembering the first time Alex had tried to shake Kara’s hand and failing.
“Hello John, we meet again, for the first time.” She said, grinning as she looked up to the big man who was so familiar.

Kara and Alex stood in front of the holo-tank, each munching on a snack of their choice from the buffet table under it. Alex looked at the wireframe in the tank of the IAV Eriador, then over to Kara. “They seem to be getting along.” He said plainly.
Kara looked at him through the holo-tank, then sighed exasperated, “Getting along like teenagers who just discovered sex. I had to write a new ‘knock’ protocol into everyone’s personal VR after the last incident.”
Alex grinned at her, “Oh come on, we went through that stage too, it’s normal.”
Kara shook her head, “I know, I know, it’s just really weird for me.”
“You think it’s not for me? I never had siblings growing up, it’s like my twin brother is dating my girlfriend’s twin sister.” He said as he popped another French fry into his mouth.
She nodded, “I obviously never had siblings either, but I understand, at least they changed their appearances a little.”
Alex walked around the buffet table to embrace Kara, “True, she changed her hair to have strands of silver in braids, and went with different makeup and a different uniform. He is sporting a short beard and longer hair than I like to keep mine, as well as a different cut to his uniform.”
Kara stood on her tippy toes to peck him on the cheek, “I’ve also noticed that Erin acts a little different. Have you seen that in John?”
Alex looked down into Kara’s startlingly blue eyes, “Yes, he’s a little more sarcastic than me, and different tastes in music.” He said with a wrinkle in his nose.
Kara giggled before breaking the embrace and swiping the holo-tank. “Still, it’s nice to have their help. Erin figured out the random interface glitch on the Eriador and has made modifications to the blueprints for the next vessel.”
Alex shivered at the thought of cloning himself again, sure John was diverging from him everyday, and although they still looked similar, they were different people. It still felt really strange to him. “It’s a good thing we only have one more to build before our guests get here, we’re almost out of nannites to fashion the Warsteel around their matrices.
Kara swiped the holo to show the first planet, which showed a growing mass of drones, forges, and auto factories in orbit. “Looks like Monty has been busy, she’s starting to mine the planet for the construction of the particle accelerator, which should alleviate our nannite problem.”
Alex nodded, “We used up far too much of it replacing the armor plates that were battle damaged in Birmingham. Which reminds me, did you ever get around to checking out the sample of Adamantine that Kelly sent back up with the Valmar crew?”
Kara swiped the holo-tank again and brought up a wireframe of an atomic nucleus. It was jam packed with particles. “I did, and I have to say, this substance is incredibly dense, and would make a decent substitution for Warsteel, but our forges would have to be modified to work it into ingots, and the auto factories would need updates to print it on an atomic level.”
“Decent substitution? Not as good as our armor?” He asked, one eyebrow raised.
Kara shook her head, “Afraid not, at least not in it’s present pure form, perhaps an alloy of it would provide better qualities, but as is now, the answer is a resounding no.”
“Is it at least better than the graphene and ceramic mix that we are currently using on the light cruisers?” He asked.
Kara nodded, swiping the holo to show a side by side comparison of the current armor versus adamantine. “Yes, better kinetic, thermal and explosive resistance, but EM resistance is about the same. The only problem is weight, this stuff is extremely heavy.”
Alex reached to the holo and swiped it to show a Trinar scout, “We couldn’t get much from our active probe scans on these ships, but we’re pretty sure they are using adamantine for armor?”
Kara checked back to the scans in the Lynx system, “Yes, they appear to have significant amounts of it in their hulls, which helped block the sensor scans.”
Alex spun the hologram, “They have propulsion on each flat side of their ship, maybe that is to make up for the loss of maneuverability the mass of armor puts on the ship?”
“That would make sense, even with the total loss of shielding, one of their ships still took a modern hafnium torpedo impact. That was one thousand kilos of pure hafnium going critical with less than .001 loss. That’s equivalent to a forty kiloton fusion bomb in our universe, and due to the wonky physics here it’s over double that now, and it still didn’t outright destroy the vessel. Our graphene ceramic armor couldn’t withstand that for sure.” She stated.
Alex swapped the holo-tank to the Missive, “Our Warsteel can handle it though. We have a pretty good idea that their torpedoes are less energetic than ours, since it appears that the Trinar must be outfitting the Howron with them. We may have to make ourselves a bigger target to give the other ships a chance of survival.”
Kara looked dubious, “The pine cones don’t just have hafnium torpedoes, some of them are fusion, and if those connect, we’ll be in the same predicament we were at Birmingham.”
“Yeah, but we know their weaponry still uses chemical propellants. Even with the wonky physics here, they’re short ranged weapons at best. We need to use our range to our advantage and never get too close in to our opponent. Especially since there is little chance of evasion.” He said.
Kara brought up the Trinar scout vessel again, “And that leads us to another problem, they have quite good point defense. The further we fire our torpedoes, the more time they have to lock on and destroy them before they get into effective range.”
Alex ran his hand through his hair, “Yeah, you’re right there. Let’s call an all hands meeting, maybe we can come up with something. We have less than two months now.”
After a few moments, and without Kelly, as she was in a meeting with the Empress on Alandra and could not break away, they ran over the problem with the assembled group.
“Could we stealth a torpedo?” Valarie asked.
Alex shook his head, “We could, but if they do an active scan ping they will see them coming and take precautions. Plus the yield would have to be incredibly low if they were made of Hafnium, we would have to step it up to fusion, which would take away from mines and planetary defense production.”
Monty piped up, “Relativistic kill missile?”
Kara shook her head, “Not enough by itself, even with the passive scanners on the pine cones they could detect them in time to intercept unless we could get them going ridiculously fast.”
John lightly pulled at his beard, “The probes have miniature ripple drives in them, right?”
Everyone around the buffet table nodded, so he continued, “What if we combined Monty’s idea of a relativistic kill missile with a ripple drive?”
“I don’t see how that could work, the reaction-less drive would have to be scaled up to get them up to a decent percentage of light speed, then a ripple drive would take up even more space, that leaves almost nothing for a warhead.” Riven stated.
Monty nearly bounced as she spoke, “It doesn’t need a warhead! We just get it up to a good percentage of light speed in a huge arc heading towards the mine field and ripple it in close.”
Erin grinned up at John, “Oh, that’s devious. But if we’re going to do that, don’t we need to start building now?”
Kara nodded, “Monty, I think you’re going to have to use your production capacity to make them, everything else is at full production.”
Monty nodded, “I have a good bit of raw materials already, since I haven’t loaded the templates in the auto factories it shouldn’t be too hard to cobble something together. Kara, Erin, care to help me out with the design? I setup this awesome mad scientist lab in my VR!”
Kara and Erin looked at each other, shrugged, and faded from the common VR to help Monty in her new project. Riven, Izzy and Valarie all faded out, returning to their ships and their duties, leaving Alex and John alone in front of the buffet table.
Without another word they both grabbed a beer and headed for the couch, each grabbing a game controller.

Mon’Kelron had been busy since returning from the Missive of Dissent. She was glad the Humans were able to repair her injuries from the assassination attempt, but she really wished she could have seen more of their ship. Evidently Kel’Taraan had seen quite a bit of the vessel, as she had helped Monty nurse her back to health.
Asking the elder Spy-Mistress about the vessel didn’t garner any additional information, not that the Spy-Mistress ever divulged more than she needed to. While she herself only knew of three Humans on their giant space craft, which seemed to be the same amount that came the last time they visited Alandra, the Spy-Mistress had teased there were more, and Alex had even stated that the last two vessels would be Human crewed.
Those vessels had a nominal crew of twenty eight, so at least 56 Humans would have to be on that ship, plus however many the Missive required to operate. She took off her ceremonial breastplate and placed it in the wardrobe. After removing the rest of her uniform and placing it in the hamper for the palace servants to clean as she thought about it.
Checking the schedule for the night guard she contented herself that the Empress would be well protected. Then she picked up her tablet from her desk and laid down on her bed to find something to watch. The device was truly amazing, it seemed to have an endless amount of entertainment and she found it easier than reading, particularly late at night when she was bone tired.
After a few hours of watching some Human romance which she found quite enjoyable she started to nod off to sleep. She was startled awake when her tablet began to ring like a tiny bell as it lay on her chest. She groggily picked up the slate of glass and metal to check the screen, the text showed an incoming call from Kel’Taraan.
The Spy-Mistress rarely contacted her, this must be important. Pressing the answer button on the tablet she saw the worn face of Kel’Taraan staring back at her, “Dress quickly and make your way to the Empress’s chamber.”
Nodding she jumped out of bed and placed the tablet down on the desk in her rather small quarters as she started throwing on clothing from the wardrobe, “What’s going on Spy-Mistress?”
The small voice answered back from the tablet, “The Empress has been shot, the royal guard are scouring the castle for the would be assassin.”
Mon’Kelron’s blood froze in her veins, “Does she live?”
The older voice cackled through the tablet, “Oh she’s fine, she was wearing a Human made dress after all. She’ll be bruised for a few days, right now she’s mad as a priestess in hell.”
Throwing on her new breastplate and strapping on her pistol she threw open her door and started for the Empress’s bed chamber at a full run. She heard gunfire up ahead, and as she turned the corner she saw a woman dressed in all black firing at her guardswomen, she drew her own weapon as the woman turned her head, seeing the Captain for the first time.
Mon’Kelron shot, aiming for her right knee, only for the woman to juke to the side, kick off the wall and launch herself towards the large Captain. Everything seemed to go in slow motion as the woman fired in the middle of her downward arch towards her. She heard the ting as the bullet struck her silvery breastplate, by instinct she reached out with her left hand, which was empty at the moment and grabbed the woman by the neck, slamming her face first into the stone of the hallway.
The would be assassin went limp, it was only at that moment that Mon’Kelron noticed she was holding the woman off the ground with only one arm. Her guardswomen stared at her in open mouthed shock. She dropped the woman to the ground, noticing she was bleeding from under her black mask and called for her guards to restrain her and take her to the holding cells down in the ministry of secrets.
Looking down at her breastplate she saw to her amazement there was but a tiny scratch on the polished silver surface. Ensuring there were at least a half dozen guards to carry the unconscious woman, she then double timed it to the Empress’s chamber. By the goddesses, what did the Human’s do to her?

Consumer groups criticise energy companies charging solar panel owners for exporting power
So this has popped up again Now im just getting solar panels and my invertor can limit the amount of power being sent to the grid, and can automatically change based on time of day So are the complaints about the change? I think the consumer group saying it will discouraging new installations is rubbish Also I found this same proposal the three years ago so it's been known about for a while
i also will have batteries, but the invertor seems capable of avoiding this charge without them

2024.05.17 00:57 nero-the-cat Same price per watt, better installer or better panels?

We're currently trying to decide between two quotes for similarly sized systems, with both at approximately the same price per watt.
Quote 1: REC N-Peak 3 400 panels. Installer is the best local one that I could find - 15+ years in business.
Quote 2: REC Alpha Pure 2 420 panels. Installer is local and respected, but significantly less tenured - only 6 years doing residential installs.
We're torn. Obviously I like the idea of having the best panels, though I know the NP3 are also great panels in their own right. I also like the idea of having our literally brand new roof (install tomorrow!) worked on by a more experienced company that seems significantly more likely to be around to actually back up their warranty, especially in this recent era of solar companies going belly up. I've had more positive interactions with their staff, and have gotten more satisfying answers from them for some of the questions I've posed regarding things like crittesnow guards - generally, they just inspire a lot more confidence.
I've already asked the installer that I like better about matching the other quote with the 420s, but they're unable to reach a similar price per watt. Both installers qualify for the longer REC warranty.
What would you do?
