Yesterday bought four ice cream pints (last pic), two Blue Bell and two Ben and Jerry’s. It’s my first time buying Blue Bell so expectations were high but this Cookies n Cream Cone (ranked S-tier ultra top 5 YouTuber Cohen Thompson) fell short. Big caveat: it melted. Perhaps this isn’t a fair review. I suspect it still wouldn’t be my favorite flavor regardless.
Ben and Jerry’s Bossin’ Cream Pie is also mentioned on this sub, and maybe the second Topped ice cream I tried (I think I had a previous strawberry cheesecake one with white chocolate ganache top I also didn’t like). It has been suggested as superior to Jeni’s Boston Cream Pie which I haven’t tried. At less than half the price of Jeni’s when on sale, why not give it a shot? I’m here to say it’s fine, but also skippable.
Ben and Jerry’s - Topped Bossin’ Cream Pie.

“Vanilla custard ice cream with cake pieces and pastry cream swirls topped with milk chocolatey ganache and fudge chips.” Caveat: Have not actually tried Boston Cream Pie (have tried the donut) * Vanilla custard ice cream: a pleasant old-fashioned vanilla taste that’s a medium between Ben and Jerry’s Vanilla (classic) and Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla (old fashioned) but not as strong. Both flavors I’ll review next. * Cake pieces: very tasty, slightly salty yellow cake. Meant to resemble Boston Cream Pie, not donut, but recalls both anyway. Soft and blended into the ice cream rather than dense or chunky. A good amount. * Pastry cream swirls: No discernible difference in texture; however I do get a vanilla icing flavor sometimes. Not the custard taste I wish for and know from the donut. * Milk chocolatey ganache top: More fudge than ganache (thicker). Sweetened like chocolate frosting. Great to bite into but develops a vegetable oil chocolate taste like acceptable but not premium Palmer’s Halloween or Easter candy. * Fudge chips: good thickness. Would I repurchase? No. A fun ice cream with neat deconstructed ideas of Boston Cream Pie (cake or donut) to have and to finish once. Overly sweet. Hints at but ultimately lacks the desert’s (I’m familiar with the donut) iconic custard center gooeyness. * Rating: 6/10.

Blue Bell - Cookie Two Step.

“Vanilla ice cream with chocolate creme filled cookie crumbles, chocolate swirl and chocolate cone pieces covered in dark chocolate.” Caveat: This ice cream melted during transit. Lost 30% volume! Picture shows refrozen ice cream after taking same amount of bits of each (not much). The Ben & Jerry’s ice cream was subjected to about half the 30 minute transit time and was not significantly affected. * Vanilla ice cream: chocolate swirl is prevalent and very integrated leading to a Hershey’s chocolate syrup mixed with milk taste overall, rather than vanilla. * Chocolate creme filled cookie crumble: a Hostess chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing taste rather than Oreo. Other cookies and cream ice cream doesn’t usually contain cookies with creme center mix ins so this is unique. I still prefer Oreo creme center though (sweet creme rather than icing taste). * Chocolate swirl: Tastes like Hershey’s chocolate syrup which is good. But overpowering. * Chocolate cone pieces covered in dark chocolate: the best texture of the ice cream. Nice and crisp, fresh tasting. Not really dark chocolate though (mildest 50-55% dark chocolate maybe). Would I repurchase? No. Visually a dazzling ice cream with the appearance of stacked mix ins. Evenly distributed cookie (small) crumble with some exciting waffle cone. Yet too much syrup. Did not enjoy the cookies with creme center like I thought I would. Glad I got the pint instead of half gallon. Wish I got Cookies and Cream instead! * Rating: 6/10

Bossin Cream Pie alternatives: * Trader Joe’s - Banana Pudding. Has vanilla wafer cookie rather than yellow cake. Chewiegooier overall textures though. A similar flaw in a strong sweetness. 7/10.
Cookies n Cream Cone alternatives: * Private Selection - Denali Extreme Moose Tracks. Average but at least it’s got a better tasting chocolate swirl that has a smidge of salty dark chocolate taste. 6.5/10 * Private Selection - Chocolate Cheesecake. Average but i enjoy the cookie crumble (pie crust) better. Similar flavor profile to the above Private Selection. The cookies have a little bitter, salty and fruity taste. 6.5/10 * Perry’s - Bittersweet Symphony. Coffee ice cream, bittersweet fudge swirls, fudge chunks. A little more darker chocolate syrup swirl. 6.5-7/10? It’s been a long time.

2024.05.19 18:02 BanananaSquid Need help with colors: Would anyone mind sharing pictures from their moody wedding?

We are having a backyard ceremony followed by a reception at a local art gallery. The very has a more "industrial" feel to it – you know the look, exposed brick, high ceilings, concrete floor, etc. There will be an TBD art exhibit during the event and it's generally a cool space where I don't feel like I need to do a ton of decorations beyond some tablecloths/runners, center pieces, and maybe som twinkle lights on one of the brick walls, but I know I need to sort out a color palette for the centerpieces and whatnot so things look cohesive. Our wedding website, save the dates, and invites are all black and white since I still have not sorted this out 🙃
The ceremony will be lighter and brighter since it will be in our backyard which will have lots of green and florals, and then I would like to transition to a moodier vibe for the reception. My initial thought is to do deep burgundy and pink bridal bouquets (my partner and I are born women) and then use that same burgundy in the reception space for centerpieces and table runners against the black table cloths that come with the venue. My concern is using the burgundy without it looking like a vampire-y/Halloween-y.
So, all that said I would love some inspiration to see how others have pulled off a moody vibe without it looking gimmicky. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.19 06:09 JabPerson How do you feel about IS removing unofficial banner themes from seasonals?

Over the past 7 months, 3 unofficial banner themes have been changed in favor of the standard random assortment of heroes from 2-3 games.

Dragonween. From Books 4 to 6, Halloween banners consisted entirely of dragon units, and thus was unofficially called Dragonween. However, in Book 7, this was changed in favor of a mix of Engage and Awakening characters (with a random Flayn cause 3H needed its equal attention cake).
Ninja class banners. From Books 4 to 6, Ninja banners were based around specific classes in mainline games (excluding the Duo backpack). Book 4's was centered around the Myrmidon classline, Book 5's was centered around the Archer classline (although this one is cheating a bit cause it used avatar characters, which can reclass into anything), and Book 6's banner was centered around the Wyvern Knight classline. However, in Book 7, it was similarly replaced with the standard format, this time being a mix of characters from Radiant Dawn and Fates.
Bridal banners. In Books 6 and 7, the unofficial theme this time was centered around a main lord, their exclusive A supports, and an unrelated Harmonic backpack. Book 6's was centered around Roy, while Book 7's was centered around M!Robin. Also important to note is that Books 3-5's themes were of a canonical couple hosting a mock wedding (Pent/Louise, Naliah/Rafiel, and Zelot/Juno in that order). Book 8 seems to have not included either of these themes, with there being no main lord on the banner or a canonical couple to base the banner around, and is instead a mix of Heroes and Engage characters.

However, they did keep the Valentine's and Children banner themes, although I would consider these more official themes due to clear trends throughout the years, and a harder difficulty to move away from their established themes compared to the 3 I mentioned above, which all have a history of staying with the standard theme (the only exception is the Ninja banner, which started with an established theme before moving away from it).
How do you feel about this? Personally, I'm mixed; on one hand, I appreciated the unofficial traditions IS had and it gave the banners a sense of continuity and predictability throughout the years, but on the other hand, it's nice to know that a fav of mine isn't immediately excluded from a banner because they don't fit on the unofficial theme.

With boot camp completed, I was free to leave the base in my off-duty hours. My plan for the rest day was to wander the city with Gress, who was eager to see Lecca and Juvre after weeks separated. His daughter had loved the idea of staying on “the human planet,” so we were heading to a hotel room where his ex-wife had planned a faceless handoff. The Krev hadn’t let me out of his sight since my abduction, because we’d yet to receive any leads on Mafani’s hideout. Where could that former black ops prick even be hiding, and why couldn’t Gress’ contact locate him? My exchange partner was worried the Resket would come back for me, and honestly, I shared those fears. I was jumpy and worried about going anywhere nobody had eyes on me.
It was a waiting game to see my persecutors get their comeuppance, and my patience was waning. General Radai was meticulous with his planning, instead of pressing our advantage before they’d have a chance to send another round of ships into our space. On the subject of lingering fears, when an armada twenty-thousand-strong burst in Tellus’ space, it had brought back memories of how the exterminator fleet had come to Earth. The greatest insult was that the bastards had figured out drones, most likely from studying my own species, so they weren’t pushovers we could use psychological warfare against anymore. Despite the advancements, the Consortium vanquished them; my faith was restored.
It’s cause for celebration. The scales—pun intended—are tipped in our favor. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting for the threefold decapitation strike to make the month-long journey; fighting a war across great distances will require patience. Persistence, some might say.
We hadn’t found too many hints in the wreckage, as the drone parts began to disintegrate almost as soon as their seams were undone. In my mind, there was no doubt they’d used our technology to some extent. Why worry about feckless crews when computers could do their dirty work? What we knew for certain was that their trails led back toward the Federation’s border, which left me wondering if our first strike didn’t need to include the Sivkits. This all started with their arrival, so they must be at the root of this conflict. Whatever General Radai might’ve thought, this proved that destroying their fleet was the right decision—who knew what kind of intel they might’ve gotten, if we spoke to them or allowed them any closer to our new home?
As much as I loved spending time with my Krev friend, perhaps the only person I’d ever felt close to, my heart was right in the thick of the war. No day wandering Tellus with Lecca could have a guarantee of safety, not until we convinced those Feddie bastards not to come knocking on our doors.
“I heard Quana was going on a tour of the caverns. She wanted to see how you lived; told Cherise it was insightful to witness a species’ conditions with your own eyes,” Gress said, as we ascended in the hotel elevator.
I tilted my head. “You two talked, voluntarily? Quana’s been less hostile since she was given the clearance to take Mafani out, but…”
“I overheard her talking with Cherise. Your Jaslip friend was interested in seeing the vault of your keepsakes from Earth. My guess is she likes the idea of making one for Esquo.”
“Jaslips had time to safeguard their artifacts, and plan the transition. I’m not sure what they’d need a vault for; they have more than fucking pictures and empty memories.”
The Krev looked at me with sad eyes, as the doors opened. “If we win this war, or are able to stop by Sol, maybe we could save a few artifacts. There has to be something, even if it’s at the bottom of the ocean, that we can save. I want to help, Taylor; my heart breaks for you and your people.”
“I know. I’m just fucked up, and I don’t know what I believe, other than that I don’t deserve you. Our history is me turning on you, doubting you, assaulting you.”
“You gave me a chance to get it right, like I couldn’t all those years ago. I’m going to save you as many times as it takes, even if it’s from yourself. You can’t push me away, or hide how you really feel.”
“How do I really feel, Gress?”
“I, um…you turned on me because you trusted me and were willing to be vulnerable. Because you care…we care deeply about each other. You express pain by blowing up, so you don’t have to admit it to yourself.”
“It’s not blowing up. I want to do something with my feelings.”
“There are other ways.”
That’s a nice statement from Captain Obvious, though he made it sound quite cryptic. Is there something more he’s not saying?
Gress steered me down the hallway, as I continued on in silence. We unlocked the door to Lecca’s room, and my leg was immediately latched onto by the little Krev. Her claws tore the fabric of my jeans, which caused her father to wince. The kid didn’t notice at all, instead bouncing up and down with excitement. Juvre crawled back into his cage, and began shaking it from the inside; of course the obor was acting possessed at the mere sight of me. He was basically a Fed. If it hadn’t been for how distraught Gress told me he was putting his first obor down, I’d suggest he give this primate some night-night syrup. There were better pets out there.
“Daddy, Daddy!” Lecca finally released me, diving on top of her father’s tail. Who made her so hyper? “Tell me something cute about the humans.”
Gress cast a sly glance at me. “Let’s see. Their celebrities walked down red carpets at big events, and pranced right on down the ‘fancy’ color strip.”
“I wanna see! If I make one for Taylor, can he walk down it? He has to show me!”
“Taylor would love to, wouldn’t he?”
“Absolutely not,” I protested. “What next, do I have to get petted by you?”
“You don’t have to, but…I figured out a way that humans will pay me to pet them. I hear you like massages: if I ran a massage parlor on Tellus, work would just be petting humans for hours. Might go for it after the war.”
“You can’t be serious, Gress.”
“That sounds like a great job, Daddy!” Lecca cheered. “That’s what I wanna do. I can’t believe we used to be scared of them; they’re so squishy, and adorable.”
“Yeah, I think I’m done with that conversation. Call me back when you figure out where Lecca wants to go. I’ll occupy myself snooping through your things.”
Juvre poked his head out of the cage as I ambled away, baring his teeth while on all fours. I found myself imagining the obor painted in clown makeup; perhaps I could persuade Gress’ daughter to do that to him, not knowing the true meaning. I rolled my hands into fists, faked a sad expression, then flapped them around near my eyes in mock crying. The primate made the motions of lunging at me, and I leapt away with a hint of fright. My friend’s worthless pet settled back on his haunches, and snickered in his shrieking register.
Demon. Diabolical little shit; I’m gonna rattle his cage in the middle of the night, right when he’s sleeping.
I took a closer look around the hotel, checking out the accommodations that visitors to Tellus would have; we had more guests on our world than ark settlers. The obor backpack Gress mentioned was sitting out on the couch, revealing a popup book about us for kids. I tugged the print media out, but was too lazy to get a visual translator to read the simplistic words. One picture showed a human kid playing on a swing set, and the child appeared on the next slide wearing a triangular hat and blowing out birthday candles. I turned the page, finding images of jump rope and hopscotch.
My hands slammed the book shut, feeling a bit deflated. We’d never done those kinds of things when I was a child in the caverns; our circumstances robbed me of almost every fun experience I could’ve had. I supposed this hardcover was about how human kids played, so that sated my curiosity. Perhaps it would’ve been better if I hadn’t been reminded about certain parts of our culture that I missed out on. Then again, it was never too late to start playing around and having fun, right? Something on the floor caught my eye; I reached my hand beneath the couch, pulling out some kind of puzzle cube.
“Well, what do we have here?” I picked up a four-sided figure with a few movable L-shapes fitted on the outside. Noticing a faint aroma, I brought it to my nose; it smelled fruity, and I wondered if this was some inverse, puzzle version of a Ring Pop. I shook it, feeling and hearing something inside. “Gotcha. Let’s see how to get this open…it’s like a Rubik’s Cube with an actual incentive.”
I rotated the L pieces enough to free one side, working to shift the square underneath into an upper layer. Getting parts of the cube to flip into an outer shell was easy, but the gaps were only big enough to jam my pinky into; it made a bit of a lattice pattern. I tried attacking it from two sides, freeing part of each surface—the contraption still defied me. Growling in frustration, I placed it between my feet and tried to tug it open. The commotion drew Gress and Lecca over to see what I was up to, and my Krev friend immediately morphed into a melty face. He caught himself, eyes shifting back and forth in a conflicted dance.
Stupid thing. I can’t get it open. This is a time waster: you’d have to be Einsteinian to solve it.
“Um, Taylor?” Gress ventured. “I…it’s natural and totally okay, of course, if you would share interests with other primates, but, well…that’s one of Juvre’s toys.”
I threw the cube away like a hot potato, bringing about a collision with the obor’s cage. “It just looked fun. Like a Rubik’s Cube, but it’s not solvable. Shit, I didn’t know. Only Juvre would be stupid enough to keep working on this; it’s a hamster wheel, man.”
The red-furred obor chittered, picking up the unsolvable puzzle. Juvre began unscrewing the pieces, moving certain blocks upward in various intervals. The primate seemed to be making tangible progress on it, and tinkered with it in silent focus. He screeched happily as he made an incision wide enough to squeeze his hand through. The monkey-like creature waved a red, powdery substance in the air, likely the source of the sugary scent; Gress called out, “Good obor!” There was a triumphant glint in the animal’s binocular eyes, as I gestured to him in indignant outrage; he popped the cookie in his mouth, crunching it in his molars.
“That’s not fair!” I shouted. “The bastard critter cheated. How come Juvre could get it open like nothing? He knows some trick, or gimmick you trained him in. He’s mocking me, chomping away at his treat like he earned it. Circus animal. Food thief gremlin!”
“I…uhhh...” Gress seemed at a loss for words; his tongue hung out of his mouth, twitching. “I can give you an obor treat too?”
“What? I don’t want pet food. Who knows what Krev put in that: you guys eat literal rocks.”
“Because we don’t have teeth. This would be perfectly edible, if that’s what you worried about. I don’t want you feeling, um, left out. There’s enough to go around, and it’s not a competition.”
“If it’s a competition, Juvre would’ve won,” Lecca said unhelpfully.
I scowled at the child. “Did your father teach you to lie? I did most of the hard work for the damn obor. He took what I already did.”
“Which is what exactly?”
“You little—”
Gress retrieved a treat bag from the kitchen, jingling it at me. “Will one of these make you stop arguing with my daughter?”
Juvre curled his lips upward, taunting me as he scooped crumbs off the floor.
“Fine. Give me one, just so that no-good obor can watch me eat it. Show him his place,” I huffed.
Gress’ eyes lit up, though he quickly attempted to mask his happiness. The Krev placed one of the cookies in my palm, and I held it up with suspicion. Maybe I should’ve asked if they’d crushed any dried insects in with the fruit paste, since I knew that was what they fed Juvre quite often. However, not wanting the pet to relish his feeling of superiority, I popped the treat into my mouth while staring right at him. My immediate instinct was to brace myself for a retching sensation, trying to hide my disgust. However, I wasn’t expecting it to taste fucking amazing. It was lighter than flour, singing with the juicy flavors of fruit snacks, then full of sodium in the center, reminding me of salted caramel.
“Shit,” I managed through a mouthful of food, raising my eyebrows at the Krev. “That’s…actually pretty good.”
Lecca stomped her foot, pouting. “Why don’t I get to give Taylor a treat, Daddy? You have all the fun!”
“Well…you can if he wants more, I guess. Just don’t throw it on the floor; hand it to him,” Gress ordered.
I searched for a glass of water, before holding out my palm. “If you want something to hand out at Halloween, this would definitely do. Maybe keep what they are on the down low.”
The Krev kid pranced over to me, carrying the bag. “So you want one?”
“Unfortunately for my little remaining self-respect, yes.”
“Okay then. Taylor, sit!”
I gaped at her. “The fuck did you just say?”
Gress wagged a scolding claw. “Lecca! How would you feel, being given commands like an animal?”
“I get told, ‘do your homework,’ take a bath,’ ‘go to bed’ as my whole life. At least he’ll get something for listening.”
“It’s not acceptable to treat my friend—a sapient being who I care about and respect very much—like Juvre.”
“You don’t care about or respect Juvre?”
“That’s not what I meant. I’m saying Taylor is capable of understanding much more than sit—as are you. Juvre couldn’t understand the concept of ‘do your homework,’ no matter the training he gets. Taylor can. It’s demeaning to the humans, and not how you treat someone as an equal, a friend.”
“I just wanna take care of them and be nice. I know he can talk, but look at him!”
“Lecca, what if there was someone out there who thought the same about Krev? Is it fair to disregard everything else about them?” Gress looked flustered, but walked over to me, placing a paw on my shoulder. “To another set of species, Taylor is a terrifying monster. He lost everyone he had in this universe, because they didn’t care about who he was—only what he was. How we treat people shouldn’t—must not be—based on how they look to us.”
I lowered my head. “Your father is right. I’m a primate, but I don’t want to be some caged animal that does tricks. I was that back in the cavern, going up to follow someone else’s commands. It hurt a part of my soul. Please don’t think of me as a pet. That’s not being nice.”
Lecca sighed, before setting the treat bag down. “I’m sorry. I don’t wanna hurt you, Taylor. Is it…mean that I think you’re reeeeeeally adorable?”
“No. It’s a welcome change after being treated like a monster that didn’t deserve to live, and having people cower at the mere sight of us.”
“Those aliens’ eyes are broken! I just wanted to see what you looked like sitting down, or rolling over.”
“You could’ve asked. I don’t need a treat. It’s enough to make you happy, as long as you don’t treat me like some object to gawk at.”
“Okay. Could you please sit on the floor? I like watching humans just walk around and do simple stuff, so it’d be cool…and I think everything you do is adorable, if that’s a reason?”
I chuckled. “Fine. After that, would you like to go to the playground with the human kids? I saw you liked swing sets, hopscotch, and some other things; if your dad is okay with it, maybe you could try it in real life.”
“Really? Yes! Please, Daddy, can we—can we?”
“Okay, but you’re going to be very careful on the swings. I don’t want you falling off,” Gress responded.
“Yay! Quick, Taylor, sit down so we can go to the playground! I wanna go right now…um, I mean, please do that because it’d be nice and I’m so excited!”
Deciding to humor Lecca since she was at least trying to make it a request, I flopped down on the floor. I didn’t think much about how I situated myself, bending my legs and placing one foot beneath each knee: the familiar diamond shape shown by children in a reading circle in an elementary school classroom. Gress’ expression changed to the annoying one, which meant I’d inadvertently done something cute to him; Lecca rushed to take a picture, and I made no attempt to stop her. The Krev child squealed, flailing her claws around in excitement at my mundane behavior.
Well, this is a new way to make a kid’s day. By…let me check my notes…sitting cross-legged on the ground.
“Is that a normal way that humans sit? Your legs are all folded up and overlapping,” Gress gushed. “And your feet are like little pedestals for your knees; it’d be even cuter if I could see your wiggly toes!”
I facepalmed, standing up in a hurry. “There’s nothing special about this. You can’t be serious. It’s called criss-cross applesauce.”
“Aw, even the name is the cutest thing. I heard that rhyme…and it mentions fruit mash, if ‘applesauce’ translated. I can imagine it smeared all over your face, replacing that fur you shave away, where you coat your chin in that white foam. That made you look more babyish and harmless! I can’t.”
“You’re horrible; and how can you say I’m harmless one sentence, then go ‘primates are violent’ in the next? You know I’m not harmless, because I literally whacked you over the head.”
“I don’t put continuity between one thought and the next, because I’ll think whatever is necessary to make you precious and pettable! You can’t stop me.”
“Precious? Nope, I can and will stop you; I’ll look really sad if you use that to describe me again. I know how to hurt you.”
“But I can hug you if you look sad.”
I scoffed. “Playground. Now.”
The Krev coaxed his daughter out of the hotel room, and I thought to myself that there were worse ways to be spending this limbo, waiting for news on Mafani and the Federation. Human kids playing together with aliens hadn’t been in my wildest imagination four months ago, but now, I could watch other children have the fun times that I never experienced. That was a reason to press on and keep fighting. It was wonderful to have people in my life who cared about me, no matter what happened, and who could explore the new and improved Tellus with me.

Hi,
I am very new to this genre, but I came here via horrorlit while looking for cozy horror that was gentle, mysterious, slower paced and not jarring/traumatic. Since browsing this space, I have really been thinking what I am seeking may be more likely to fall under cozy fantasy.
Some context:
I am looking after a parent that's very ill. We are not very close (they were abusive), but life after their passing feels like an odd mix of hopeful and devastating. I have mostly come to terms with it and am well supported in therapy, but I have really been wanting to lean into cozy, relaxed, fantasy reads that may/may not be about bereavement but are about finding ourselves after loss.
I love the idea of finding joy and meaning not just in suffering but beyond it, in picking up the pieces and living anew, fresh starts.
I think I'd enjoy "finding ourselves" and adult coming of age novels involving travel, meeting new people (maybe even love interests), making friends in unexpected places, career changes that are more fulfilling and aligned. I tend to like books involving cute/fun/creative clubs, like a new person moving to a small town being invited to join the local book club kinda thing.
Themes I enjoy:

Humor (gentle, witty, acerbic, dark, satirical, just not oppressive/harmful to marginalized groups)
Book Clubs
Seaside/mountainside towns/villages with beautiful descriptions of these settings since I can't travel right now
Baking/cooking/chocolate/coffee shops
Supernatural elements are always cool (pets/familiars, vampires, ghosts etc.)
Mystery like even a whodunit recommendation would work where folks get together to solve a murdecrime ( but nothing super disturbing, like think Nancy Drew all the way up to T. Kingfisher, Simone St. James and Gilian Flynn at most but not Jack Ketchum)
BIPOC authors and characters (protagonists) preferred but do not have to be BIPOC-only (am open to a wide range of suggestions)
- BIPOC spirituality like Buddhism, Santeria etc. (and only if these books are written by folks who [as in individual or whose ancestral communities] practice these faiths i.e. not yt authors appropriating these faith traditions in their books)
Feminist, women/nonbinary folx centered
Wise elders/teachers/making new friends who are seniors
As a reader myself, I also like books that feature tarot/divination/psychics
YA is not my top preference but is okay
Romance that is cozy, non-toxic, has elements of fantasy
Found family
Career changes, moving to a small town and starting afresh after burnout / job stress in a demanding profession (Fresh starts broadly)
Halloween/autumn/winter vibes/themes

Themes I am not into:

Space, aliens, machines/time machines, math/physics/tech/stem heavy plots, high school setting (too young to feel resonant in my 30s), loss of pets/children or heavy bereavement, SA, emotional/physical/psychological abuse (mentioned in context is okay but not in detail).
I tend to enjoy children's lit, but I am just not too sure if that's what I am seeking right now.

So I’ve always wanted one of these since I learned about the customizing and fanmade themes and characters. I know Meets and Some can be converted to an On, and I’ve noticed the Some is cheaper than the other two and it has that really cute purple halloween like theme. But I read somewhere the Some doesn’t have bluetooth so it can’t connect to the app. Does anybody know if a convertion with TamagotchiCenter can add the bluetooth hardware to a Tamagotchi Some? Or should I just cave and get an On even if it’s more expensive?

Steam just updated my Fallout 4 even though it wasn't in the time I set the automatic updates up to be, and now when I play the game the perk requirements for the workshop crafting isn't showing any real text. It's not game breaking but it is annoying as I would like to know what level of the perk I need to craft the upgrades. I am European and planning a solo trip in Chicago next October, as I am curious to experience Halloween in the US. - Is it nice to be there during Halloween or do you recommend any other cities in the US? Is there anything happening? - In which neighbourhood do you recommend me to stay? Would be great if it is not too far from the center but also safe (as I am a female solo traveller) and not super expensive. I have found something nice in Lincoln Park and Lake View but they seem very far. - Any nice 2 days trips you recommend from Chicago? Preferably in the nature or in any smaller and characteristic village. And also well connected with transports as I won't have a car. - Is it a safe city for a female solo traveller?

Reservation Required Campgrounds

Black Rock and Cottonwood are the most developed campgrounds (water, toilets, sanitation dump) and are the only campgrounds you can stay in if you have a larger rig.
Black Rock has six sites that can accommodate rigs with a total length (tow vehicle included) of 38-40 feet and seven sites up to 42 feet. Cottonwood has around twenty-five campsites that can accommodate rigs slightly longer than 35 feet.
Indian Cove and Jumbo Rocks both have a few spots for RVs up to 35 feet in total length. If you have a rig larger than 35 feet, site availability may be considerably limited.

First-come, First-served Campgrounds

These campgrounds are great options if you have a smaller rig and the good fortune of securing a site. During the popular season, these campgrounds fill every weekend and often during the week, as well.

These are primitive campgrounds, so you will need to bring (and carry out) everything you’ll need during your stay.

Staying Outside the Park

If you’re unable to find a site in the park or you’re looking for a campground with more amenities, here are a few nearby campgrounds:

TwentyNine Palms RV Resort and Cottages: About 10 minutes from the north entrance.
Sam’s Family Spa and Resort: About 45 minutes from the main visitor center.
Catalina Spa and RV Resort: About 50 minutes from the main visitor center.

How To Get Around

Nestled between I-10 and California SR 62, Joshua Tree is located in Southeastern California and is easy to access. Several towns nearby, including Palm Springs, Indio, and Twentynine Palms, make perfect supply stops before entering the park.
Indio is the last best stop on I-10 if you’re entering the park from the south. The park’s south entrance is located off Exit 168, about 30 minutes east of Indio. The park also offers a west entrance on Quail Springs Road, about 10 minutes southeast of the town of Joshua Tree. And the north entrance is just ten minutes south of Twentynine Palms on Utah Trail.
Several paved roads allow you to traverse the park, but going from site to site can require long drive times. The most frequented sites are located near the northern edge of the park, so if you’re coming from the south along I-10, you’ll be driving through the park for an hour or so before you spot your first Joshua Tree.

There are many places to visit in the park that offer a variety beyond the infamous trees. It’s a unique location that features the intersection of two desert ecosystems.

Cholla Cactus Garden

The Cholla Cactus Garden is its own special area and is unlike any other part of the park. Be sure to enjoy the flat, ¼-mile nature trail to get the best look at the cacti. This patch of cacti is incredible because it mostly consists of Teddybear Cholla, which is the star of the cactus world.
The Cholla Cactus Garden is so impressive, and you’ll love snapping photos of these majestic plants. Their beauty changes throughout the day depending on how the sunlight hits them. A small word of advice, look but don’t touch. Ouch!

Arch Rock

Arch Rock is a very popular rock formation located a half-mile from White Tank Campground. The loop trail is easy to follow and a perfect activity for the whole family. Of course, the Arch Rock itself is the thing people most want to see, but there's lots of space to wander around and explore the other rock formations, too.
It’s also a very popular place for night photography and stargazing. If interested, White Tank Campground is a really convenient place to stay because of its proximity to the trailhead.

Keys View

Keys View is a popular lookout that offers incredible panoramic views of the park and the Coachella Valley. If beautiful scenery is your thing, make sure to visit Keys View. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the main road to the lookout via Keys View Rd.

Ryan Mountain

One of the most popular activities in the park is the hike to Ryan Mountain. This 3-mile round trip trail leads to the summit, where you’ll be treated to sweeping 360-degree views. The hike is listed as challenging by the NPS, so be sure to bring plenty of water and expect changing weather conditions.

Hiking

Lost Palms Oasis Trail: A challenging 7.5-mile out and back trail down a canyon to one of the park’s most remote fan palm oases.

The Park Service DOES NOT recommend attempting challenging hikes in the heat due to the elevated risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

Mountain Biking

The majority of the park’s paved roads are not suitable for road cycling. However, several backcountry roads are perfect for mountain bikes. There are even three campsites within Ryan Campground dedicated to cyclists.
Be aware that bikes are only allowed on roads open to vehicle traffic but that the main park roads do not offer bike lanes or wide shoulders. Consult the park’s website for safety tips and road recommendations before biking in Joshua Tree.

Brief History of Joshua Tree National Park

Despite its harsh desert environment, humans have inhabited the area that is now Joshua Tree for more than 5,000 years. In the modern era, the biggest threats to this natural environment were land developers and cactus poachers.
In the late 1920s, a Pasadena resident named Minerva Hoyt began voicing her concerns about the unregulated removal of cacti and other desert plants to be used in home gardens throughout Los Angeles.
In a relatively short time, her conservation efforts resulted in the formation of the Joshua Tree National Monument in 1936. The original protected area encompassed roughly 825,000 acres but was reduced by about 265,000 acres in 1950 when the Park Service excluded certain mining parcels in the eastern part of the park.
On Halloween in 1994, the Desert Protection Bill passed and Joshua Tree was elevated to national park status. The bill also added back approximately 234,000 acres of what had been lost in the 50s.

I’ve worked at one for 5 years, making 30k+ monthly in Beijing. It’s easy work that I greatly enjoy. I’m planning on getting a teaching certificate and later Master’s in education, probably from Moreland University. My employer only needs a TEFL which I have but I want to future proof some kind of education work in case requirements change or the company folds or English kindergartens go the way of training centers due to some policy change.
The only reasons I could imagine it’s unwise are it seems like policy is trending toward less kindergarten English education. Like we’re technically not allowed to teach phonics though it’s an open secret that we do, but if they decided to enforce those rules that could be an issue. But as long as it’s viable, are there any reasons to not be a kindergaten teacher other than personal preference?

There are still a bunch of good ones out there (I've also had many solid ones in my favs for quite some time).

Good servers (to me): Emphasis on not being a dickhead, actually gets players, if running custom content it has to be tastefully done, not bloated & tacky, ping <100, anti-teamstacking measures
"Bad" servers/what will not be here ( again this is just my opinion): Instant Respawn, 1 map or game mode only (couple exceptions), more than 32 players, RTD, "friendly"/no combat servers, unmoderated racist/toxic BS
Servers/settings I'm indifferent towards: Crits/Nocrits, Vanilla vs. Custom, Average skill level, 24 vs. 32 player, NSFW sprays, centered around niche/"weird" fandoms, Bullet/Damagespread, Class limits

It's very well maintained & polished and even though I may not enjoy every game mode I've been very impressed by this server network (esp. as a former highly modded community server owner). The EU one fills up most of the time, and I deal with the ping because it's a cool community (it even runs a battle royale mode that is surprisingly well-made). Southern Cross Gaming (Rainbow Swirl in particular) - Stumbled across this & played 1 round with these guys running a cool custom mode but apparently they run stock maps as well as custom maps/game modes. Their rules had a huge emphasis on keeping it fun & being respectful and everyone seemed really cool & laidback. It was full at peak time on the weekend. I (female 16) and my mom (female 35) don’t always get along. Understandably, my mom was upset when I told her I was pregnant. When I told my mom I had acknowledged that she was going to be upset before actually telling her, after I told her I took a nap and she called my dad and although she was upset my dad says she seemed to have calmed down.
The next day my mom called me and starting yelling at me and telling me that I was being a “hoe” and “I shouldn’t have been whoring around.” I told my mom when I was 15 weeks and 4 days along, I told my mom that I truly needed her to keep her comments to herself so I wasn’t becoming overly stressed. After we went back and forth some I went no contact with my mom for almost 6 weeks. The only reason I started talking to her again is because she texted me telling me she hopes my baby and I are doing well and I decided I didn’t want to withhold my daughter from my mom just because she said things she shouldn’t have when I was pregnant. I was trying to be the bigger person and allow her a relationship with my daughter.
My mom and I talk maybe once a week now as she’s upset I’ve put some boundaries in place. These aren’t boundaries with just her but with everyone. My mom would say things like a couple weeks after I have her she was going to come to my house and take her for a week(she lives 6 hours away from me) when I told her she’s not allowed to go out of state without me until she’s way older my mom starts to call me “an orca” which upset me since I’m already dealing with my teenage emotions and hormones on top of the pregnancy ones.
Then my mom starts to tell me once I go to my next doctors appointment I need to get my doctor to send her a note so she can be with me when I go into labor. When I told my mom the only person I want in the room with me when I have my daughter is her father then she asked me about my birth plan. I continued to tell her that I was going to a birth center instead of the hospital (hospitals make me uncomfortable and anxious) and I wasn’t going to get an epidural she told me that I can’t do it that way because it makes her uncomfortable and that I think I’m not going to get the epidural until I’m in a lot of pain. After I told my mom that I’m not going to do it the way she did it or how I’m not going to do everything the way anyone else did she got really quiet and was in a hurry to get off the phone with me.
A couple days later(after I’ve opened up to my dad about how I was feeling) she told me she wasn’t out of place of anything we had previously talked about. She continued on by telling me that I need to send her my daughter’s social security so she can put her on insurance which I’m pretty sure she can’t because I’m not even on her insurance. My mom keeps nagging on the idea that her and my younger brothers are going to come down here after she’s born but I doing want them around her until my daughter is at least 6 weeks old (around Halloween time). My mom seems to feel like she can push my boundaries with my daughter just because she’s my mom. As much as I love my mom and brothers, my mom is kind of a narcissist and tries to have everything her way. As for my brothers (15, 9, and 4) two of them are too rough, the 4 year old is bigger than he realizes and has been the baby of the entire family for the past 4 years. The 9 year old has been through a lot and I have been his support system through it and I don’t want him to feel like I’m replacing him or forgetting him.

2024.05.13 06:17 PerformanceGlad8460 Advice Needed. Horrible Roommate. Long post.

I moved in with an old friend not too long ago and at first everything was fine. Rescued an older dog, roommate said they were fine with the dog being in the house and even offered to help out with the dog if need be. We’d clean the apartment once every two weeks, we cleaned our own dishes, and everything was great.
For the last two months, living with my roommate has been hell. My roommate has been ordering DoorDash every night (there is a mountain and I mean MOUNTAIN of DoorDash bags, food wrappers, kitchenware, and beer bottles on their bed that they sleep with and all over their floor), has been smoking & drinking alone in their room every night (they leave their window wide open day in and day out, screen is open too. Their room is physically behind the dumpster. There are so many flys in their room, I had to kill a dozen of them yesterday because they got into the living room and the room has this thick dank smell), they have caused so much damage to the apartment (trying to fix the damage they caused led to further damage) that there is not a shot in hell I’m getting my deposit back, and is constantly complaining about my dog; granted, the dog does relieve themself in the kitchen on weewee pads after being home alone for 3+ hours if I’m working away from home during the day (my dog is great and is an absolute gem and this is only an every so often issue as I have family in the area who help take my dog out and I WFH most weeks). The amount of body hair I see everyday in the shower, sink, and on the toilet seat is just straight rancid; not enough Clorox wipes in the world to keep up with. Also, my roommate is just an intolerable person to be around. They are cocky and condescending; straight up emotionally/verbally abusive.
On top of this, my roommate just recently admitted to me that they’ve been lying to their employer about their degree, this on top of a long list of lies that I’ve recently found out weren’t true that I don’t even know what to believe anymore.
Also, they’ve mentioned wanting to purchase a firearm. For Halloween, we were going to a mutual friend’s party and carpooled over. They placed a BB gun in the center console to get my reaction; it scared the shit out of me and made me very uncomfortable as I thought they purchased a real one.
I want to get as far away from them as possible but have no options. I can’t afford to move out, I have no family to move in with and don’t know what to do. I genuinely think my roommate is unstable and I worry if I say anything they will either become violent with me or towards my dog (they’ve talked about how they would “boop” ((hit)) their family dog to discipline them and suggested I do the same because of my dog relieving themselves on the weewee pads in the kitchen). I’m considering surrendering my dog temporarily until I figure it out for their own safety.
Any advice would be appreciated, I’ve talked about this issue with friends from work and the only advice they have is to move out but I don’t have that option.
