Artist Biography by Daniel Karasek
Post Malone, aka Austin Post, is a diamond-certified hitmaker of both rap and mainstream pop. He was raised in Dallas and wanted to join a band as a kid thanks to the video game Guitar Hero. However, he changed his mind and wanted to become an MC after his dad gave him a copy of Terror Squad’s “Lean Back.” Post Malone hung out with the Dallas crew IRAS until he relocated to Los Angeles. He put some braids in his hair and dropped the track “White Iverson” in 2015 which got a million views within a month. He signed with Republic later that year. In 2016, he released his debut album Stoney which featured artists including Justin Bieber, Quavo, and Kehlani. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and would later go multi-platinum. Following this album, Post Malone released two chart-topping singles “Rockstar” with 21 Savage and “Psycho” with Ty Dolla $ign. Combined, these singles went 13-times platinum and became part of his second album Beerbongs & Bentleys which discussed Post Malone’s rise to fame and the trappings that came with it. The album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Before his next album, Post Malone did the pop single “Sunflower” for the Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack which became over 50-times platinum certified worldwide. His next hit “Wow” came later in 2019 helping put Post Malone in the Hot 100’s. 2024.05.17 13:57 estrangedbride AITAH for not inviting my estranged father to my wedding, but inviting all my other formerly estranged family?

I (34F) am getting married next year to a wonderful man. I'm an American living abroad, and we are getting married in his home country where we both reside. Our guests are very dispersed globally, so we've given over a year's notice to our guest list, some of whom are coming from as far as Thailand or the West Coast of the US to celebrate with us. My own family lives about 6,000 miles away, and I need to make decisions fairly soon about invitations to give them enough time to arrange and budget for travel.
I have been estranged from my parents for a very long time, after a childhood where I was violently, emotionally, and psychologically abused by my mother, and my father was largely absent due to his work schedule (he was away from home in excess of 40 weeks per year for the majority of my childhood). My mother was never particularly kind to me, but the worst of the abuse was when my father was away and so he never saw or likely knew the full extent of it at the time. I think it's important to note that the abuse I'm talking about is not "borderline" or covered by "we tried our best" - it likely rose to the level of criminal abuse and should have been reported to CPS. The physical abuse stopped only when I threatened to hit her back as a teenager, but of course she remained narcissistic and emotionally cruel for years.
We had a tumultuous relationship through my early adulthood until I finally cut contact with her about 10 years ago. I tried to explain to my father that our conflict goes beyond normal mothedaughter friction and over several conversations was finally explicit with him about how abusive and violent she was. He has consistently pleaded with me to reconcile, forgive, move on, and told me how much he believes she loves me. He has apologised and passed along her apologies in fairly vague terms - "I'm sorry for how hurt you are" "I'm sorry I was not there for you and your mother when you needed me", etc., but never a real acknowledgment of how bad it was and that it was wrong, full stop. He has generally adopted a view that he believes I am holding on to anger in an unhealthy way.
I have tried several times over the intervening decade to reconcile with my dad, setting a condition of our contact that he not ask me to have a relationship with my mom. Without fail, every time we have been in touch, he eventually brings it up. Finally, almost two years ago I broke contact for the last time and said that I could not have a relationship with him until he gets professional help to understand why it hurts me when he consistently does this. He has not - and as far as I am aware, he has never even discussed the abuse with my mother (I have asked).
As a consequence of this, I lost touch with all of my other family as well - my father's siblings, my aunts and uncles, and their kids - many of whom I was very close with as a child. I didn't know how to explain the rupture with my parents and didn't want to "air dirty laundry" by explaining, especially as I hoped for a very long time my parents would seek professional help and try to repair our relationship. I was ashamed, thought that I was a bad person, and felt incredible guilt for being a poor member of the family. I missed weddings, holidays, and most shamefully ignored attempts from some of them to reach out to me because I dreaded explaining why I was not in touch with my parents.
After a lot of therapy, I've slowly gotten back in touch with some of my family and it is incredible how much I missed them. I have explained the gruesome details behind the estrangement only to one aunt and uncle, but have expressed remorse to the others for not being in touch. I have a lot more family members I'd like to get back in touch with and would love to see at the wedding.
I want to send all my cousins and aunts and uncles invitations and a note that says more or less "sorry for dropping off the face of the earth for a decade, I had some issues with my parents I didn't know how to handle, but I miss you and would love to see you if you'd like to come celebrate."
The problem is this feels...selfish of me. I haven't spoken to many of them in so long, and now I will invite all of them but not my parents - my dad will surely find out, and I know how much this will devastate him to miss his only daughter's wedding. But I cannot stand the thought of reaching out to him again only to be implored to reconcile with my mother, or hear more admonishments from him about the importance of forgiveness for family. The thought of not having him there is incredibly painful for me - missing him walk me down the aisle, or a father daughter dance...many of the things I've wanted since I was young and important parts of a wedding. The whole family will now also know to some extent that something has happened with my parents, and I am sure that it will come out (or I will tell people) exactly what has happened. I feel like I will be rubbing it in my parents' faces that they were not invited if the rest of my entire family is.
Am I the asshole for inviting my whole family who will see my parents are not in attendance? Am I the asshole for being unwilling to try again with my father? Or should I just invite none of them and let sleeping dogs lie?

2024.05.17 13:53 Complex_Biscotti_813 Can I get tested in Peru?

I'm in Lima, Peru. I finished my course and I submitted my sample for testing in Labcorp right before I left the US, planning to view my results when abroad. Infuriatingly, I learned that my doctor's office mishandled my sample so Labcorp was not able to test. Labcorp told me that the urgent care put it in an incorrect container without the preservative.
Is there a Labcorp, Quest or any lab with reliable PCR test for this here in Lima, Peru? What would the cost be of out-of-pocket? Would my insurance (medicare) likely reimburse? I would need to go through doctor presumably like in the US? This would be a challenging as I'm not fluent in Spanish.
Or should I interrupt my trip and fly back to the US for this? I need to decide now.

2024.05.17 13:52 Ok_Macaroon_510 Perineal Tear nightmare

I’m a first time mom and this is all so new to me. Please don’t judge me too harshly, just looking for some support/ reassurance because I haven’t been able to tell anyone about this.
My baby boy was born 10 weeks ago, and while recovery was hard for me all around, at least my vagina healed pretty fast. No issues there. I had a first degree perineal tear that was treated with dissolvable stitches. At 6 weeks I felt comfortable enough to have sex.
Well even though I asked my husband to go slow, he didn’t… He knew how careful I wanted to be and despite this, he went at the pace HE wanted to go at. In less than a minute, he managed to tear me right back open.
Obviously I was very upset by this, physically and emotionally. It’s created problems in our marriage ever since. He was not sensitive enough and ended up making an already sensitive area much, much worse. I no longer trust him with my body, and tbh it’s made me even consider divorce. He hasn’t shown any empathy or remorse and has stated that I’m being “dramatic” even though it hurt and he made me bleed…
I went to the drs office the day after, and they did confirm a tear but refused to do any stitching as they didn’t view it as necessary for a “first degree” tear. Fast forward a couple weeks later and my vagina still doesn’t feel the same. I looked down and it definitely looks like the skin never fused back together. I regret doing anything sexual with my husband because my postpartum vagina had no issues prior to sex. I’m so self conscious, so angry at my husband, and overall very depressed by this… it feels like my vagina is a gaping open hole and my vagina crack is basically down to my anus. I want to have it repaired so badly but I don’t even know where to begin. I’m having another dr look at it soon but I can’t stop crying over this. Any advice?

2024.05.17 13:51 MadlockUK Were the 'Banana Wars' in Central and South America unique in how they had sometimes backing by private companies, or was this a common trend within Victorian times?

I'm aware of the Banana Wars and there is a case in which United Fruit and Standard Fruit backed different sides in conflicts within Hondoras, but was this common place? It seems there were many business interests that were protected for by the US though it seems like this could've been more common especially in regions (like the Americas under the Monroe Doctrine) where they would've had US backing from at least a diplomatic point of view. So in short, were there other instances of private companies directly competing by funding wars to further their interests? Also, can this be found outside the Americas?

2024.05.17 13:50 SarahC Writing to ID classes isn't allowed!

I've just started learning Python and Blender, and I'm pasting some Python code in to the editor.
I press Alt+P to run it, and anytime I've tried making a new material it complains about ID's not being allowed in this context? What context!?
The screenshot shows the whole error, code, and cube.
My goal is to add the code that creates a Principled shader node with some translucency and roughness into a lego importer. Nothing fancy linking nodes together.
Currently it makes a material that doesn't use nodes, and when I click "Use Nodes" it clears out the simple color, making a new white node material, hence my plan!

2024.05.17 13:50 madisonboyer123 My boyfriend died this week.

My boyfriend died this week. On Sunday. He was only 23, he committed suicide. He was my best friend, spending and talking every day since we’d been together for the past 2 years, our son will be turning 1 in a few weeks. Im so broken, I have a gaping whole in my heart, while also feeling guilt and shame like it was my fault. He attempted twice before we were together, but since we were together on the successful attempt I look back at all the ways I didn’t listen enough, or told him we’d talk about it in a little while. He stayed with me and my son all weekend and then went to stay at his house Sunday. We video chatted around 10:30, he was upset about a few things, I could tell he’d been drinking, when he drank he was always emotional, so I had no idea it would lead to this. But I let him talk and told him I was there for him, I then had to go put our son in bed. Why didn’t I stay longer? I would’ve talked to him all night. After we video chatted we didn’t talk ever again, his parents said he spoke with them sometime after midnight asking for forgiveness and then he went and done the act. I just don’t understand, and none of us ever will. I loved him so much, I viewed his body yesterday, I was shaking and terrified to go. When I think of suicide I had an extremely gory image in my head. He didn’t look like that image, he finally looked like he was at peace. I hugged him and kissed him and told him to wait for me. This life just isn’t fair. I’ll never forgive myself for not doing more. But we had a great weekend together 💔

2024.05.17 13:48 lemoshima Is emotional neglect the source of my self-disgust?

I was suggested this subreddit by a friend so I’m not entirely sure if it fits my problem, but I’m willing to try.
Six months ago I started therapy because I realized I fail to connect my mind and personality with the person I see in the mirror. For years I’ve been indulging in different forms of escapism to completely obliterate any emotional pain, which resulted in losing contact with myself. I told my therapist I didn’t know who I was anymore. Since our first session then she’s made a ton of effort to help me regain self-consciousness, and I finally started to associate my appearance with “me”, but recently I’ve discovered that the only emotion my whole existence evokes in me is disgust. I can only see myself as some sort of gross decaying animal body, and I get confused and anxious when I remember this is what my loved ones see and are forced to interact with. Therefore, I am disgusted with every relationship I have formed previously and wish to cut myself out of all of them.
My therapist suggests that all the “disgust” I feel might actually be internalized shame, and though her claim does sound legitimate, there is little evidence to back it up and hypothesize about the reason said shame emerged. The memories I have of my childhood are extremely limited, and the hazy parts I can recall I can explicitly view as a spectator, with no thoughts or emotions present. I do know that my mother was a cold woman when I was a kid from the words of my relatives but she says she’s changed her attitude pretty fast, caring for me and praising me for my achievements. I don’t know whether I can believe what she says since I have no concrete memory of either situation. I briefly remember crying hysterically one day in my room so she could clearly hear me and come comfort me; if I’m not mistaken, it took her an hour or so. I think she scolded me often for being unclean and disobeying and unsympathetic, having not cared when I upset my family members, but I’m not sure if I can trust this memory. She says when I was bullied at school, was injured or had my first period, I never told her (and I don’t even remember being bullied). It had also never occurred to me to talk to her about my personal feelings and struggles. It’s not that I wanted her to know and stopped myself from telling, but as if I never thought that was an option at all. I love my mother and I believe she was always trying her best parenting, and the fact that I doubt her and feel disconnected from her as if she was a stranger pains me. Could it be that her actions have caused my shame?

2024.05.17 13:47 Mcr_enthusiastic_kid I need urgent advice on my parents

So my mum and dad split about 3 years ago, and they split on kinda good terms. My mum still lives in my dad's houce as its in both their names, and she makes much less money, amd My dad currently lives woth his parents paying ZERO rent while making triple figures (this is super important)
Basically my mum wants to move down to Dorset, she's found the perfect house and was under the impression that she had enough money to move as they where splitting the houce 50 50.
Hears the problem, my dad failed to tell her that the mortgage was 70k rather than 17k to pay off, this pretty much means she dosent have the money to move to the houce she wants, plus our current house has sold for about 20k below what we wanted to sell for, so she's 50k short of her dream house.
My dad has fully refused to help her sell the houce, he's done no viewings, no trips to Dorset to see the housing market, no trips to see my sisters 6th form schools that she needs to go to next year. He's just sat back and had the money fall Into his lap while my mum is working herself sick to sell and buy before my sister has to get into 6th form.
On top of this my parents have a flat in london, the agreement was that she sells the houce, he sells the flat, supprise supprise, he has not sold the flat, partly due to an annoying nabour who holds part of put leease hold, but also because he has much work (for context he works from home in a stable job, where he constantly takes sick days, whereas my mum works 9 hours a day in a collage as an lsa, and is working her ass off, running round the school looking after children)
And over all this, my dad refuses to lend her the money she needs for moving, me and my sister down to dosret, shes said that shell pay it back from the flat sale. but any time she even brings up finances he just overulles her, shputs and makes her out to be the bad guy. He constantly bad mouths my mum IN FRONT OF ME, and makes her out to be his horrible snarling karen to everyone he meets.
Plus hes constantly going on trips away with his friends, and spending allot of money, but he refuses to help pit at all woth finances, i asked for ÂŁ15 recently to het up to london, and he just told me to use my own money, that im saving for university. Hes already said hes not gonna support me financially in university, which means i have to apply for a bigger loan.
Is there anything i can do, or sugget my mum dose to get him to pay this stuff, like a clause in a contract of something? I dont know what to do, my mums crying every night, and all my dad want to do is hang out with me like nothing happened and talk shit about how selfish she is. I just really need help, my sister needs to be able to go to school, and my mum needs to move. I have no idea what i can do.

2024.05.17 13:46 PatternsComplexity What image / number immediately comes to your mind when you hear "Gen Z"?

I am a middle-of-the-road millenial but I stumbled upon this subreddit by chance and that made me want to see what zoomers bring up as the biggest differences between those generations.
But then I looked at the sidebar and noticed the GenZ range and realized the oldest people in GenZ are only 5 years younger than me. Looking at how much the world has changed since my childhood it makes me think that generation spans should probably be 10 years at most nowadays.
That makes me even more curious about how people intuitively view "GenZ". Not based on facts but immediate biases and feelings. That's why I wanted to ask my question:
When someone says "GenZ" - what do you envision? Like, the immediate image in your mind. Do you see people? Maybe a specific number representing age? What is it for you?
For me it is someone who is somewhere around 15 years old, wearing high quality clothes, an "intentional hairstyle" and with a smartphone.

VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / May 17, 2024 / Usha Resources Ltd. ("USHA" or the "Company") (TSXV:USHA)(OTCQB:USHAF)(FSE:JO0), a North American lithium exploration company, is pleased to announce that it has entered into a Letter of Intent (the "LOI") with Stardust Power, Inc. ("Stardust Power") dated March 15, 2024 granting Stardust Power the right to earn up to a 90% interest subject to a 2% Net Smelter Royalty ("NSR") in Usha's Jackpot Lake Lithium Brine Project ("Jackpot Lake" or the "Project").
If the parties enter into definitive agreements covering the transaction, (i) depending on the earn-in level, the total consideration could total up to US$26,025,000 over five years inclusive of payments comprising US$1,525,000 cash, US$750,000 stock, US$15,750,000 stock or cash at Stardust Power's election, and a work commitment of (US$8M). Upon completion of the full earn-in including NSR buyback, Usha would retain 10% of the Project and a 2% NSR and would be carried in the Joint Venture ("JV") formed between Usha and Stardust Power until a formal Decision to Mine is reached following completion of a Feasibility Study. Stardust would be permitted to buy back 1% NSR for a cash payment of US$7.5M.
A non-refundable sum of US$75,000 has been paid to Usha by Stardust Power pursuant to the LOI. The LOI is non-binding, other than Usha's agreement to not engage or communicate with any other party with respect to the Project through September 2024. The transaction is subject to the satisfaction of a number of conditions, including Stardust Power's satisfactory commercial and legal due diligence, the negotiation and execution of definitive agreements (the "Definitive Agreement") and the approval of the TSX Venture Exchange. The Company cautions that there is no guarantee that the Definitive Agreement will be completed or that the other conditions will be satisfied including the listing of Stardust Power on NASDAQ.
Stardust Power is developing a lithium refinery facility in Muskogee, Oklahoma, with capacity of producing up to 50,000 tons per annum of battery grade lithium carbonate ("BGLC") once fully operational. Stardust Power's battery-grade lithium refinery will be designed and manufactured to foster lower carbon energy independence for the United States. Stardust Power seeks to become a sustainable, cost-effective supplier of BGLC, primarily for the electric vehicle ("EV") market, through the development of its innovative, large central refinery (the "Facility") optimized for multiple inputs of different types of lithium brine, including concentrated lithium brine, lithium chloride, or technical and crude grade lithium feedstocks. Once completed, Stardust Power expects to secure multiple sources of feedstock from various lithium producers, with the Facility becoming one of the largest lithium refineries in the United States.
Stardust Power is expected to become a publicly traded company on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol "SDST" via a planned business combination with Global Partner Acquisition Corp II (NASDAQ:GPAC), a special purpose acquisition company. The transaction is expected to be completed during the first half of 2024. 1
Deepak Varshney, CEO of Usha commented: "The development of the Jackpot Lake Lithium Brine Project is a key focus of our company. We demonstrated in 2023 that there was significant potential at this Project, and we look forward to returning to the Project this year to build on last year's successes."
Mr. Varshney continued: "Our strategic vision at Usha has always been to acquire and monetize undervalued assets. With the recent success of companies such as Abitibi Metals, we have been evaluating opportunities to acquire advanced-stage copper and/or gold projects to create further shareholder value in a similar fashion. A number of project reviews have already been completed, and the Company looks forward to keeping shareholders up to date on the progress of its strategy."
Pursuant to the LOI, the Company has agreed to pay 2818390 Ontario Corp (the "Finder") a finder's fee for the Finder's assistance with the proposed sale of the Jackpot Lake Project equal to (i) 10% on the first $300,000 in Transaction Value, (ii) 7.5% on $300,000 to $1,000,000 in Transaction Value, and (iii) 5% on the Transaction Value over $1,000,000 in the consideration received directly from Stardust Power, Inc. by Usha.
Jackpot Lake Lithium Brine Property
USHA's Jackpot Lake Lithium Brine Project is located within Clark County, 35 kilometers northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, and is comprised of 442 optioned and staked mineral claims that total 8,714 acres (approximately 35.3 km2).
The Project's geologic setting is similar to that of Albemarle's Silver Peak Nevada Lithium Mine, the only producing lithium mine in North America, which has operated continuously since 1966, where sediments from lithium‑rich surrounding source rocks accumulate and fill the deposit leading to a potential concentration of lithium brine due to successive evaporation and concentration events.
Modelling indicates that the Project target comprises the entirety of the Company's core optioned claim block (2,800 acres; 11.3 km2) and is open in all directions for expansion. The target is shallow, predominantly above bedrock depths of 600 meters, and is approximately 450 meters thick. The total basin within which the target is situated is estimated to be approximately 10,900 acres of which the Company now controls 8,714 acres.

2024.05.17 13:41 SnowyDayToday Some thoughts on a recent post…

Recently I made a post about a CBC podcast that briefly discussed the WFH/RTO debate. Most of the commenters felt the discussion was balanced. Which is fine. But for me, I see article after article and speech after speech with the same rhetoric. It is that rhetoric that drives my frustrations. I did not see that podcast as ‘balanced’. Much of the information and discussion around WFH, RTO and the PS is not balanced.
One commenter noted that I only want to see what “I think” reflected.
You know what, I do want to see more of what I think reflected in the media, by the unions and by the employer.
I think that in a climate crisis putting people back on the roads commuting is irresponsible.
I think that in a housing crisis forcing people to stay in expensive urban centres is unconscionable.
I think that spending public money on space in office buildings for workers who do not have an operational requirement to be there is wasteful.
I think that rejecting WFH when it is a benefit that could attract and retain top talent to the PS is shortsighted.
I think that the employer pretending that collaboration can’t happen virtually underestimates the capabilities of its current staff.
I think that hotelling frustrates staff more than it helps.
I think that complaining about the asbestos, bats, mice, etc. will just lead the employer to spend a fortune to fix it rather than recognizing the building rental is unnecessary in the first place.
I think that raising the discussion of workers not having enough space will only lead the employer to acquire more space or they will shrink our workspaces to ensure higher density.
I think that the employer, who gets lobbied by chambers of commerce, businesses who refuse to move away from the 9am to 2pm business model, premiers and mayors has a responsibility to remember that it is not on the shoulders and pocket books of public servants to support failing sectors of the city.
I think that the unions had an opportunity during negotiations to push harder for remote or hybrid work to be put in the collective agreements but folded and now want employees to take on the risks in escalating measures to make up for their mishap.
I think that there is no data showing that RTO improved productivity.
I think that I am luckily to be a PS. I know there are many benefits to working in the PS. I also know that there is always room to improve. Room to improve working conditions. Room to improve employee morale. Room to allow flexibility and work life balance. Room to allow employees to thrive in the environment they work best in.
When I see angry comments or articles from the members of the public, I can see where they are coming from. All they see day in and day out is the PS asking for even more benefits where they may have fewer or none. They see media articles and politicians use language like ‘back to work’, they want to ‘sit outside for meetings’, they want to ‘sit in their sweatpants’, they want to do ‘their laundry’. From their point of view it certainly does look like the PS is ‘whining’.
Going forward I would rather see a discussion of other topics of interest as described above rather than the same old arguments that will get the PS nowhere.

2024.05.17 13:38 Aldous_Szasz "Libertarian" capitalism [PART 2]

In my last post I showed why “Libertarian” capitalism sacrifices liberty to capitalism, a truth its advocates are able to deny only because they are prepared to abuse the language of freedom. Some of those who have actually read and understood the post, make the correct point that it does not prove that the they must abandon their political preferences, since they can always reformulate them without using the language of freedom. That is indeed so, but they lose, if my line of argument is sound, not, indeed, the capacity to stick to the society that they favour, but an argument for those views rooted in the value of freedom. The arguments that I have provided will not detach hard-core “libertarians” from their political position, but that is precisely because, despite their rhetoric, they do not care about liberty or freedom as such.
In this post, I will have a different approach. I will show why the justification of property rights can only be consequentialist. (And in a later post I will show why consequentualism is incompatible with capitalism. I will do so by utilising Otto Neurath's work.)
In this post, I will present a view called "universalism". Universalism is saying that a thing being me is decided solely by the quality of immediacy that is present in every experience (thus, surprisingly, making every experiencing thing turn out equally to be me).
That view would seem to steer all moral thinking away from opposing the rights of distinct persons to one another. One could not properly ground something called 'rights' on a respect for a distinctness of persons who must not illicitly interfere with each other.
A respect for something like such rights could only be justified as in some way contributing to the well-being and satisfaction of the one person in different manifestations who was always me. Since that one person would almost always be under the illusion that there was a distinction of persons, denial of such supposed interpersonal rights could often be a source of unhappiness for them. Thus, rights could have only a consequentialist justification.
But how could anyone arrive at such a view? First, I will show why the standard view on personal identity is wrong. After that, I will show you how to arrive at the proper alternative view, by solving the sleeping beauty problem. Let's beginn...
Brain Bisection
Brain bisection, the surgical cutting of the connection between the hemispheres of the brain at the bridge of nerves that normally joins them (the corpus callosum), was an operation that gave relief to epileptics. But experimenters working with split-brain patients in the 1960s discovered an additional result of this surgery that was startling and disturbing. When they fed markedly different information into each hemisphere, the subject would, it seemed, possess two mutually excluding experiences at one time.
In a somewhat simplified example, if a subject whose hands are out of sight, under a table, is given a spoon to hold in one hand and a brush in the other and afterwards asked to point to a picture of what he had been holding, he would with each hand only be able to point to the picture of the object that that hand had held. As we might say, one hand wouldn’t have known what the other was doing.
Let us engage in a variation on a thought experiment in Derek Parfit’s paper ‘Personal Identity’ that dramatizes the puzzle in brain bisection. Imagine that by pressing a button I could cause a device to anaesthetize my corpus callosum, so that the communication between the hemispheres of my brain could be stopped temporarily.
Tonight a concert of my favourite music is going to be broadcast on radio, but I also have to do some tedious studying from audiotapes. Well, why don’t I arrange that the music will go into only the right hemisphere (which is musical) while the study material will go into only the left (which is verbal) after the button has been pushed to stop the integration of the activities of the hemispheres and thus any distraction of either by the other? But now a big question arises: what would my evening be like?
Think about this: Someone just slogs through the studying. And someone just enjoys the concert. But is it me in both cases? Or am I doing one while someone new does the other? Or have a couple of new someones taken my place?
Note that the continuing identities of the hemispheres and of the branching thought processes are not at all problematic like the question of which of these are then mine. The hemispheres could be easily distinguished and their distinct histories charted over time, as could the branching development of the thought into that about the concert and that about the studying. The problem, then, cannot be in the identification of these hemispheres or branchings. The problem is rather what would be making one of them or neither of them or both of them mine instead of somebody else’s.
The ordinary understanding of what a person is does not allow that I could be both enjoying the concert and suffering through the studying, since each of these experiences seems walled off from the person who is having the other. Yet it cannot be that I only enjoy the concert or alternatively only suffer through the studying or that I somehow experience neither. For following a more extensive anaesthetizing, or a stroke, that completely incapacitated one hemisphere I would certainly have had whichever experience was in the remaining functioning hemisphere. The concert experience would be mine if there were only the right hemisphere and the studying would be mine if there were only the left. In our case there are both. How could either experience fail to be mine merely because another one is taking place across the way?
Furthermore, after the anesthetic wears off and the integration of activities in the hemispheres has returned, I will remember having had both experiences equally well. I will remember both as having been mine. But it cannot be that the memory is somehow retroactively making both to have been mine. It is rather that I am discovering what had been true at the time but had then been hidden because of the lack of integration—that both experiences were mine when I had them.
The answer to what my evening will be like, then, must be that I will experience both the concert and the studying, though each will seem falsely to be the whole of my experience at that time. I shall contend that it is this same false seeming that hides the fact that all experience, of all conscious things at all times, actually is mine, and therefore yours.
The Sleeping Beauty Problem and its solution
The ‘player’ of ‘the awakening game’ is hypnotised into sleeping a trillion days. After he is first made to sleep, a secret toss of a fair coin will decide whether he’ll be briefly awakened on every day of the trillion or only one time, on a randomly selected day. Crucially, after any awakening, the hypnotist, while making the player sleep again, will make him forget he was awake. So he will not know directly whether he is being awakened a trillion times or once.
You are the player awake during the game. Can you not reason that it would be a trillion times more probable that this awakening would be occurring if there is an awakening every day and, therefore, given that this awakening has occurred, that it is a trillion times more probable that there are a trillion awakenings? Notice that this inference would be perspectival, like the earlier inference of the lottery winner to the probability of all entrants being winners rather than only him. From another perspective there would be no improbable coincidence in that awakening’s day having been randomly selected if there was only one.
The Sleeping Beauty problem is that before the game you would not have been able to make any such inference and yet you know that in your very next episode of thought you will be properly doing so. It is as though you know what you will see when you open a door to a next room and what you will infer on the basis of seeing it but you cannot yet make the inference. The paradox is not solved simply by recognising that because the inference is perspectival one shouldn’t expect to be able to make the inference from outside the awakening. For, as I shall explain, knowing that one will be properly making the inference in ‘the very next episode of thought’ seems to put the evidence one will then have right into one’s hands even before the game.
The evidence for the inference in the awakening game is that ‘this particular experience exists’. And what creates the paradox is that there are two different ways of taking what the existence of a particular experience depends on. Both ways of individuating experience recognise that any experience will feel to itself like this particular one. Of course, that feeling is merely subjective and would have to belong to any experience. But according to the ‘objective individuation’ of an experience for it actually to be this particular experience in which that feeling is being had two additional objective conditions must also be satisfied—the objective identity of the possessor of the experience and the objective time at which it occurs. An experience had by anyone else could not have been this one. And neither could an experience had at any other time, like on another day out of the trillion, be this one. The identity of the possessor remains constant in the awakening game, so the crucial determinant of the particularity of an experience of awakening would be which time it occurred. And it is this way of thinking of a particular experience, as depending on the time it occurs, that inspires the player, when in an awakening, to think that this, his evidence, that this particular experience exists, would be made a trillion times more probable by a trillion days of awakenings instead of only one.
But we also have a temptation to individuate an experience subjectively, according to nothing but whether it is felt from within to be “this” experience, whether it has immediacy. Thinking of an awakening game that has only one awakening makes this especially tempting. We can easily think that the random choice of day would merely have determined on which day the same one awakening would happen to occur. When we do think this way, it must seem that one and the same ‘very next episode of thought’ will occur just as well no matter in which objective time it happens to be placed. And what is crucial to the paradox is that we are thus thinking that in our pre-game anticipation of that next episode of thought we already have hold of its particularity as an experience, the very particularity that we shall be using to make our inference to a trillion awakenings. But within subjective individuation we could not use the existence of the particular experience we were in to make an inference to a trillion awakenings because the same experience would exist just as well either way. If we stayed consistently within either objective or subjective individuation there would be no paradox in our pre-game thinking. Within objective individuation we could recognise that later, from within an awakening, we’ll be properly inferring that there are a trillion awakenings but now we don’t have that evidence we’ll have then as a basis for the inference—that the particular experience within which we are making the inference has managed to exist. Within subjective individuation, on the other hand, our anticipation of the next episode of thought would have captured completely its particularity—what would be the evidence for the inference within objective individuation—but we would know that that could not be evidence, even within the game, for inferring a daily awakening, since that same one awakening would be existing as well on any day it occurred even if there was only one.
The Probability Argument for Universalism
Let me point out first that by using the style of reasoning of the awakening game one can establish the overwhelmingly greater probability that subjective rather than objective individuation is right. Again imagine being the player in the awakening game and finding yourself awake. If objective individuation is true you should infer that it is a trillion times more probable that there is an awakening every day rather than only one. But let us now add that for sure there is only one awakening in the game. That, if you believe it, might seem to leave you with no option other than wallowing in the great improbability of this awakening having occurred. But now let me remind you that there are two competing hypotheses regarding the individuation of this experience. According to subjective individuation there would be no improbability in the existence of this particular awakening. In fact, it is better at improving the probability of this evidence than even the trillion awakenings within objective individuation, since many potential experiences would have fallen outside the times of awakenings. So from within this awakening it must be inferred that its existence was made easy by subjective individuation instead of incredibly hard by objective. Of course if objective individuation is true there would still exist an awakening and this inference made within it would have been misleading, but what you would have to think within an awakening is that it would have been incredibly improbable that it would have been this one that was misleading in that case because the probability would be overwhelmingly greater that it had never existed to mislead.
But must such an inference favouring subjective individuation be confined to a fantastic game? Not at all. For the existence of this experience that you are actually now having would have been incredibly improbable in exactly the same fashion if objective individuation were true. Its existence would have required you to be existing and conscious in just one small period of time, the time at which your experience is actually occurring. If you and your experience had instead existed at any other time, this experience would never have come to be. But it does exist. So you can now infer the immensely greater probability of the truth of subjective as opposed to objective individuation.
We are forgetting something. Recall that objective individuation required two objective conditions to be met for the existence of this, your experience. One was the objective time of its occurrence—and we have had to let go of that. The other we haven’t yet considered—the objective identity of the possessor of the experience. If we give up that condition, we have full-blown subjective individuation—or ‘universalism’. And, as we’ll see, the same reasoning gets us the truth of that.
Think first of a many players version of the awakening game. Imagine an extraordinary hotel of a trillion rooms, in each of which there is a different sleeper. The two versions of this game have either all these sleepers awakened or else only one.
If, as a player, you find yourself awake, you should infer the immensely greater probability that all have awakened. But if you are assured that only one has awakened, you need not simply wallow in the improbability of its having been you, as you would have to do if you stayed within objective individuation regarding the possessor of this experience. There is an alternative hypothesis. This is the view that this particular experience, of being me at this time, is such purely because it is experienced as such—which is equally true of all experience. All experience is experienced as this, happening to this experiencer (which is therein I) at this time (which is therein now) and in this place (which is therein here), whatever the objective circumstances of the possessor and time and place might happen to be. So this hotel awakening was not an improbable event. That it happened to this person at this time and in this place is not at all improbable. For that’s how it is in all experience.
And need this inference be confined to a fantastic game? No. You can make it now
Objective individuation says that your own coming to be was unbelievably improbable. Subjective individuation says that your coming to be was as easy as pie.
Just consider the history of begettings that would have been required for you to exist on the objectively individuating ordinary view of the matter. Let’s say conservatively that during your conception there were 200 million sperm cells competing with each other to reach the egg first. And on the ordinary view if any sperm cell but the one that did happen to make it had got through to the egg instead you would never have been around (and never have had this experience). So you had only a one in 200 million chance of being produced from that conception. But it gets far worse than that, because in order for that conception to have occurred, your parents had to have been conceived, and in each of their conceptions the chance of it turning out right for your later existence was, with our conservative estimate of the number of sperm cells, again one in 200 million. So the chance of your emerging from those three conceptions was one in 200 million to the third power, or one in 8 septillion— pretty slim. And, of course, all ancestral begettings before these had to be just the right ones for your future existence, the number multiplied in each preceding generation, and all of it going back to the time of the dinosaurs and far earlier than that. Otherwise it would have been eternally blank for you. You would have had no experience whatever. Only others would have been in the world instead.
Only the hypothesis of universalism can relieve this improbability. It didn’t matter which sperm cell hit which egg. You must be there equally in any conscious being.
Think about what you ordinarily would recognize to be ‘my experience, now’. What makes it ‘mine’ for you? Is it the detail of its content? If the colours you were seeing had been different, would the experience have failed to be this, yours? Think of all the features of this experience that could be varied while its character of being ‘mine’ remained untouched. If you had fallen asleep and were now in the midst of a wild dream that had little in common with any of the usual content of your experience, would that experience have therein failed to be experienced as ‘mine’? If you had eaten different particular items of food over the past years (as you might so easily have done), so that all the particular atoms in the structure of the body were different in numerical identity from those in your body now, would the experience have failed to have that character of being ‘mine’? Must you take care with the particularity of the food that you eat because it is determining the identity of an experiencer, of the subject of self-interest? If the experience were had in a different location, if it were at a different time, would the experience not still have had that same character within it of being this and being mine?
What makes an experience yours is none of the specification of its content or of the particularity or other properties of its possessor. All that is required for an experience to be yours, to be 'mine', is that it be immediate in its character as its character is experienced within it, that it be first person. My pains are pains that are not remote like those that belong to another. My pains are those that are immediate. They have internality. They are experienced in a first person way. They are subjectively at the center of the world, here in me. But all real pains must be had with this quality of immediacy that makes them 'mine'. What could really be a pain without its thus hurting?
What I am saying has spectacular implications: It means that my self-interest reaches fully into the life of every conscious organism, each of which I equally am, and that the death of any one of these does not annihilate me so long as there still is any other conscious thing anywhere in all reality—since I will be that thing. And every experience in any time is experienced by me with all the same urgency of its happening now. All of it equally is mine and now.
It also follows that inflicting pain as retribution for wrongs is a horrible mistake: The person wronged and the person punished are one and the same.

2024.05.17 13:34 LegalThrowIreland Coffee Machine Damaged Beyond Repair by Courier

Hi all, I would very much appreciate some advice.
My 1200 euro coffee machine developed a fault, the machine is under warranty so I contacted the manufactuer and was told to contact their authorized repair agent in Ireland, who told me to deliver it to the retailer I purchased it from, and that they prefer the store packages it so ensure its safely packaged.
I wrapped the machine in several layers of bubble wrap, wrapped the wire neatly and firmly taped it to the front of the machine, and taped up the box, which I delivered into the retailer.
2 weeks later I was told the machine was damaged beyond repair, that it was caused by insufficient packaging and that the wire had gotten underneath the machine and destroyed it. They sent a few pictures of damage but it's apparent they didn't fully unwrap and inspect the machine.
When I got the package back myself I inspected it and it's apparent it wasn't the wire as claimed, the machine was bent inward from the front and had shattered the inside of the machine in several places, likely by being mishandled in either transport or by the repair agent.
I assume they'll claim it was my responsibility for not packing it sufficiently. As far as I'm concerned my responsibility ended when I delivered it safely to the store, and they should have opened the package, inspected it and ensured it was safe for transport. I also don't believe the retailer is at fault, I believe it was hishandled.
I've been advised by the manufacturer to contact the retailer to make a claim.
Could someone please advise on the best course of action? I've never made a claim before, is it possible to resolve this directly with the retailer? I don't actually want to go through the process of claiming, I just want the same machine back. I signed a document with my package when I dropped it off, can they claim that because I gave them a boxed package, I'm at fault? Is there anything I should or shouldn't say when contacting the retailer, or if necessary going through small claims court?
Thank you very much.
