Vapiano P3: Italian Food Made in Germany
The kitchen is on fire. Welcome to the final part of the Vapiano story where the tables are turning. In the first two episodes we followed Mark Korzilius' journey from setbacks to founding Vapiano, a groundbreaking restaurant concept, highlighting its fresh ingredients, dynamic atmosphere, and data-driven operations that drove rapid success. While achieving initial profitability and garnering attention from industry giants like McDonald's, Vapiano's global expansion has led to stellar revenue growth. However, it has also resulted in the emergence of numerous side projects (or distractions), operational challenges, increased costs, significant investments, and a notable accumulation of debt. This underscores the prioritization of top-line growth over profitable growth. We will continue on this thread and see how the story ends, but I would encourage you to read part one and two for better context. Vapiano P1: Italian Food Made in Germany (substack.com). Let's dig in.
Before Going Public
We are now in 2015 and the year is a disaster for Vapiano's PR department. Employee time stamps are being manipulated, endless overtime for employees and high turnover in managerial roles are reported; mice in the kitchen and even rotten food allegedly found.
The company is confronted with allegations of exceeding working hours among trainees in an article published by Welt am Sonntag, while the same outlet accuses Vapiano of manipulating punch times. The auditing firm PwC is commissioned to investigate the allegations and finds that there is no systematic approach but rather misconduct by individual employees, a mistake that’s being corrected. Internal however, investigations into stamp times are carried out regularly now and beyond its obvious reputational impact, this sucks up valuable management time and attention.
In the summer of 2015 CEO, co-founder and investor Gregor Gerlach, who has been running the group since 2011 is stepping down and Jochen Halfmann is taking over. A new Vapiano People Program with an App is being developed with the aim to better interact with customers that will incorporate innovate features such as mobile pay. The German website sees a launch of new magazine to further promote the brand and there is now a full inhouse blogger and Instagram team being installed. In October the company buys seven restaurants from original co-founder, former co-investor and ex-president previously responsible for internation expansion Kent Hahne (2x Bonn, 3x Cologne, 1x Koblenz and one in Cologne that’s under construction). This package of Vapiano restaurants is very successful and generates net sales of more than 20 million euros in 2014. Hahne opened his first Vapiano restaurant in Cologne in August 2006 and in 2015 with his company apeiron AG, Hahne operates six L'Osteria franchise restaurants, a direct Vapiano competitor, and two self-owned restaurants GinYuu.
Then in November of 2015, the next public relations bomb goes off with allegations regarding the company's quality standards. The company immediately investigates the issue through internal and external specialists but finds no evidence of any quality issues. Nevertheless, knowing that the group is now being closely watched, the company’s already in place hygiene standards are being reinforced. Additional audits and inspections are performed nationally. Further, all Vapianos worldwide are being audited twice by the partners SGS Institut Fresenius and SAI Global. Auditing software is purchased to simplify the implementation of the audits and the resulting measures. Apart from the external examinations, there is a food sampling plan in place being performed continuously. Again, all of this sucks up costs, management time and attention. With all these tumultuous developments the company’s growth engine is undeterred. Revenue grows by a whopping 50 million euros to 202 million euros, an increase of 33%. Impressive. While average spent per customer increases in all countries, the number of customers per day in Germany decreases by 3.3% partially due to the negative press towards the end of the year. Five own, four JV and 19 new franchise restaurants are added that year to the group, the total number of own managed restaurants grows to 51, there are 31 JVs and 84 franchises which bringing the total to 166 Vapiano restaurants. Global restaurant sales are now above 400 million euros.
But while revenue grows by an astronomical 50 million euros, operating profits, alarmingly, shrink again. Gross margins are staying perfectly healthy above 75% but operating costs keep growing disproportionately fast. The Company’s outstanding debt jumps by almost 30 million, close to 85 million euros by the end of the year. With operating profits at 9.5 million euros, alarm bells should be going off right now.
In Q4 of 2015, new CEO Jochen Halfmann introduces Strategy 2020. The new strategy includes five essential points. One, profitable growth in the newly defined core markets of Germany and Austria as well as in the UK, Netherlands, France and USA. Two, operational excellence through strict “best practice” management. Three, further development and digitalization of the concept considering guest feedback. Four, greater focus on long-term employee retention and five, building a modern and sustainable IT landscape. Sound’s good on paper but let’s see how things pan out.
Vapiano's investments (capital expenditures) that year are primarily directed towards new restaurant openings, renovations of existing establishments, and share acquisitions in other Vapiano restaurants from franchisees or JV partners. A significant portion of funds is allocated to the digitalization of the guest experience, including the development of a new app scheduled for market release in 2016 and the implementation of a time recording system across all group restaurants. The world's first standalone Vapiano restaurant with a delivery service that year is built in Fürth, Germany. The company keeps expanding its presence in both inner-city locations and international markets, such as Shanghai, China.
To finance all of this, the group has its own operating cash flow which comes in at 18 million while capital expenditures are 26 million euros plus 14 million for acquisitions. The funding gab is filled with 26 million euros of new debt and a seven-million-euro equity raise. At that end of the year and after the equity raise Gregor Gerlach (through his AP Leipzig GmbH & Co. KG entity) holds 30.1%, Hans-Joachim and Gisa Sander through their Exchange Bio GmbH hold 25.5% and the Tchibo heirs, Herz through their Mayfair Beteiligungsfonds II GmbH & Co. KG hold 44,4%.
But for the first time the restaurant’s concept that was so successful to date is being questioned. Some customers are starting to mislike the operational flow of the concept itself. If you want pasta, you must queue for pasta. If you want pizza you stand in a different queue. A small side salad, yet another queue. "You spend more time carrying trays than an actress in Berlin-Mitte. The audience in the pasta limbo can only consist of people who have worked for an insurance company for a long time and, like Stockholm syndrome, they can no longer get away from the industrial canteen feeling," writes TV host Beisenherz provocatively. While overly harsh in his assessment he's not entirely wrong judging by customers venting their frustrations in forums and social media channels. It isn’t uncommon for those who ordered pizza to have already finished eating while there is little movement in the pasta queue. Long term that doesn't go down well, QSRs competitors like L’Osteria are handling this process differently, with much success.

Tipping Point

Where are now in the year 2016 and things start to deteriorate visibility. Perhaps not for the leman’s eye but any business minded observer can see that there are problems under the hood. Yes, revenue grows yet another whopping 50 million to almost 250 million euros but half of that growth, comes from acquisitions of restaurants that the group didn’t already own 100%, which is now being fully consolidated within the group’s accounts. Here is a concrete example. In the past, Vapiano SE, the group’s top holding company held an indirect 50% stake in a French subgroup via the subsidiary VAP Restaurants SA, based in Luxembourg, and included this as an associated company in the Vapiano SE consolidated financial statements using the equity method. Due to the acquisition of additional shares in September of 2016, Vapiano SE's indirect share in the French subgroup increased to 75%. This means that Vapiano SE takes control of the French subgroup, which is therefore included in the group’s financial statements as part of the full consolidation. The revenue from the acquired subsidiary now recorded in the consolidated income statement amounts to 12.8 million euros. While that’s great for the top line, the loss of the fully consolidated entity equates to 0.2 million euros. Yes, you are buying revenue, but there are losses attached to them, not profits. A similar case is the Swedish entity that runs eight restaurants with revenue of 11.5 million euros but has losses of 235 thousand euros. So much for Strategy 2020 and “profitable” growth.
That year the group’s operating profits are absolutely tanking, halving to 3.5 million euros. Operating profits are now a mere 1,4% of revenue. Remember original founder Mark Korzilius who talked about operating margins of 25% to 28% at the restaurant level? Yes, there are overhead costs for the organization that sits above the chain of restaurants, but operating margins that low indicates a course correction is needed. What’s telling is that in the annual report, in the management discussion section, the company starts talking about EBITDA as a proxy measure of profitability, rather than operating profit or net income. This wasn’t the case in the years before. Is this window dressing for an upcoming IPO? EBITDA is short for earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization. How can you measure profitability of a restaurant chain that absolutely and unequivocally needs capital investment to maintain its restaurant operations, the very source of cash generation, by simply excluding this maintenance charge (depreciation in the income statement)? Vapiano’s own annual report talks about the fact that existing restaurants must be rejuvenated from time to time and that new interior designs have to be implemented every few years. These things wear and tear, they go out of style, kitchen equipment breaks and needs replacement. This business absolutely needs maintenance capital expenditure, why anyone talks of profits before these maintenance costs is beyond me. Fun fact: in the previous annual report EBITDA is mentioned seven times, mostly around restaurant acquisitions and financing, not however as a profit indication for the group. In the new annual report, EBITDA is mentioned 28 times. Maybe it’s just me but belated Charlie Munger liked to call EBITDA: bullsh*t earnings. When in doubt I stick with Charlie. Interestingly, EBITDA for Vapiano keeps growing while operating and net profits keep falling.
Operating cashflow for the group that year is about 21 million euros, but capital expenditure is 30 million and acquisitions for subsidiaries another 20 million. To finance these expenditures another 28 million euros of debt and 16 million of equity is raised. Net debt rises above 130 million euro. The operating cashflow of the group before any capital expenditures is 21 million euros. I am not sure free cash flow would be significantly positive after maintenance capex is paid out; it’s not broken out so we can’t be sure. Granted, I am not on the ground during this time, and I am not in the board room, I am simply reading what’s in front of me, but to me this is starting to look like a distressed situation. Regardless, the following year the company goes public.

IPO

Where are now in the year 2017 and its Vapiano’s first year as public company. The company’s annual report reads the following “Sales revenue, like-for-like growth (LfL) and the earnings figures EBITDA and adjusted EBITDA are used as the most important financial performance indicators for controlling operational business activities.” The very same report however also says: “The majority of the group's investments regularly go towards opening new restaurant locations and modernizing existing restaurants. The latter are differentiated into regular replacement investments that occur during ongoing operations (Maintenance CAPEX) and fundamental investments in the renovation of a restaurant (Remodeling CAPEX). On average, a restaurant remodeling takes place nine years after opening.” It says it right there in their own report; every nine years a remodeling is taking place. Remodeling and updating is not cost free, so why exclude depreciation charges which reflect capital expenditures? I understand that perhaps you would want to strip out one-off opening costs, that’s fine and fair, but don’t go overboard.
The number of restaurants increases by 26 (previous year: 13) to a total of 205. The increase consists of 27 new openings and one closure. Group revenue grows to an astonishing 325 million euros but here comes the shocker, operating profits turn negative to 25 million. Fine, strip out foreign exchange losses of 3 million, IPO costs of 5.8 million and new opening costs of 6.1 million and you still have 10 million euros of operational losses. All the while the debt load of almost 130 million hasn’t materially changed, so those operating losses are before a six-million-euro interest payment. 184 million euros are raised through the IPO of which 85 million go to the company. This money is earmarked for further expansion as the group has ambitions to almost double the footprint to 330 restaurants by the end of 2020. The company is currently not profitable on an operating basis, and still wants to expand aggressively? I don’t get it. The remaining 100 million euros of the IPO money raised is distributed to co-founder Gregor Gerlach and Wella heirs Hans-Joachim and Gisa Sander. The family office of the former Tchibo owners Günter and Daniela Herz with a 44% stake, don’t sell a single share. After the IPO, 32% of all the company’s shares are now in free float.
One year later, in 2018, things get even worse. Revenue grows to 371 million, but operating losses mount to 85 million euros, that’s before interest expenses of 9 million. Even the beloved EBITDA figure turns negative, meaning the operating business before any expansionary or even maintenance capital expenditures is loss making. All regions are experiencing significant deterioration in their earnings profiles. Like for like sales are down 1% across the board. That’s revenue, not profitability. The question naturally arises: is the Group approaching its natural saturation point here or this operational by nature? The operating cash flow is now 9 million while financing cost are close to 7 million. That leaves 2 million for maintenance capital for 74 own restaurants and 76 joint ventures ones. Describing this as financially tight, would be an understatement.
Things are not looking good at this point. Yet the company still grows restaurants by 26 new sites. 64 million euros are spent on acquisitions, new openings, and maintenance costs, financed through a 20 million-euro equity raise and 72 million of new debt. The Company now has net debt outstanding of over 160 million euros. After the equity raise and by the end of the year 2018, Mayfair owns 47.4%, VAP Leipzig, Gregor Gerlach’s entity owns 18.9% and the Sander couple own 15.5% of the company. Yes, the Sanders and Gerlach may have taken 100 million euros off the table, but they still have substantial skin in the game. Plus, Mayfair hasn’t sold a single share and instead injects more money into the company through the equity round. The stock has now fallen from its IPO price of 23 euros per share to under 6 euros by the end of 2018. Something must be done here. And indeed, there is pivot in strategy and a hard push for change. At last, the management team abandons its aggressive growth plan and curtails new openings significantly. Additionally, the team wants to run a thorough analysis of weak locations to then either discontinue or sell sites. In Europe, the operating focus will be put on corporate restaurants and joint ventures in major cities to ensure the ideal size and location to match the respective demographic target group. Outside of Europe, the franchising business is being expanded and at the same time a consolidation of the existing corporate and joint venture markets is being sought. All future investments will be reviewed to achieve higher rates of returns on new openings. Investments are also being made in the renovation of older restaurants. The goal in the future is to also open smaller formats, like Mini-Vapianos (less than 400 square meters) or Freestander at prominent transportation hubs outside city centers (currently in Fürth and Toulouse) to cater to individual location requirements, and to enter new partnerships. I am not sure why management hasn’t stopped all expansion altogether, bringing the ship in order first, getting profitable, clean up, all hands-on deck before considering any further expansions whatsoever. But again, it’s easy to comment from the sidelines; maybe they saw white spaces that would be covered by competing concepts if they weren’t moving fast and aggressively enough. Although pushing internationally means competing with local players such as Jamie's Italian, Prezzo, Pizza Express, Wagamama, Nando's and many more which brings in its own dynamic.
Management also aims to enhance guest satisfaction. This involves refining operational processes, reorganizing the support center, and refocusing on the core offering: providing fresh and high-quality Italian food at affordable prices for a broad audience. The group also aims to reduce waiting times, especially during lunch, while also improving the evening atmosphere. There is even what I would call an evolution, away from Vapiano’s original concept, reorientating the customer journey. The ordering flow is being changed, offering guests synchronized preparations of all dishes while eliminating wait times at the cooking stations. The open show kitchen remains, staying true to original mantra of freshness and transparency but now guests can choose their preferred method of ordering through a mobile app, using a digital order point (kiosk), or by personally placing an order with a waiter. Guests can still freely choose their table and are then informed about the complete preparation of their order through a pager or their smartphone. This is a substantial deviation from the original concept, but a needed one. The group is also exploring and implementing the expansion of take-away and home delivery services but only at suitable locations, not universally across new openings. I am not sure why home delivery is even a priority here; it adds operational complexity. It’s better to clean up shop first and get back to the basics before adding new complexities. To be fair management does try to simplify. There are 49 different permanent dishes on the menu and additional 10 seasonal ones. Customers can choose from eleven different types of pasta. There is simply too much choice, and it makes orders complicated. The company announced to slim the menu down to its most popular and typical Vapiano dishes. There’s no need for an Asian salad at an Italian restaurant. "We have to go back to the roots, i.e. classic, honest Italian cuisine" says COO Everke. Regardless, in November of 2018, the supervisory board pulls the plug on CEO Jochen Halfmann and replaces him with Cornelius Everke. Everke himself has just become COO five months ago. Since 2017 he was responsible for international expansion. From 2011 to 2017 that role was filled by Mario Bauer – put a pin in that name, he’ll play a key role in the groups fate later. Then nine months later, in the middle of 2019, Cornelius Everke quits. He essentially concludes that his skillset and experience in the areas of internation expansion is no longer needed in the foreseeable future. To put it differently: Vapiano has moved from a growth story and has become a restructuring case, and other skills are required for that job. In June of 2019 Everke says the following “(we’ve) made a bit of a mistake when it came to foreign expansion”. No sh#t. Vapiano postpones the presentation of the 2018 annual financial statements three times in the spring of 2019, citing negotiations over an urgently needed loan of 30 million euros. It’s not until the end of May that a binding loan commitment comes through from the financing banks and major shareholders.
We are now in August of 2019 and the corona pandemic is just around the corner. Supervisory board chief Vanessa Hall takes over as interim-CEO and things are unravelling. Visitor numbers are declining; originally, it was planned to sell the US business but halfway through the year the buyer cannot come up with the money. But not all restaurants are performing poorly. The group's poor figures contrast starkly as an example with the experiences of the Swiss-German franchisee, who runs six restaurants. The Sodano family in Switzerland pays Vapiano a royalty of 6% of sales for the use of the brand. Enrico Sodano explains in an interview that they operate largely autonomously from the licensor. If an “accident” were to occur, he could immediately replace the Vapiano sign with Sodano, he says. The family concluded the rents and contracts with employees and suppliers independently. The Sodano family have six locations in Bern, Basel and Zurich, around one million guests every year and 350 employees. Things are going well on the ground. The delivery service they’ve built is offering them a second income stream. Expansion into Winterthur, St. Gallen and Lucerne are being planned; small locations with 150 to 250 square meters and an attached delivery service. Originally, Vapiano restaurants used to be huge but for such a large restaurant to be profitable, 800 to 1,000 guests per day are needed. That’s possible in medium-sized cities, but not in smaller towns which is why the Vapiano group now also supports smaller formats. Back to our corporate drama. The 2019 annual report would be the last report the group files. By the end 2019 the outstanding debt of the company is at an astronomical 450 million euros. Revenue has grown by another 7%, produced by four net new openings through two JVs and two franchise restaurants but operating losses come in at 317 million euros. That sound like an absolute shocker at first but depreciation and amortization charges are 345 million, so that operating cash flow is actually positive but unfortunately capital expenditures and interest payments are so large that they are eating up all of the company’s operating cash flow. Then in the beginning of 2020 Corona hits with full force and the world shuts down. As a result of the measures to prevent further spreading of the virus, the group is forced to cease all global business operations (except in Sweden). While all these shutdowns are happening, the group is the middle of negotiating with its lending banks and main shareholders. There are additional financing needs for restructuring measures, even without a pandemic happening in the background. The situation is so dire that the company starts pleading to the German government to roll out the package of financial help more quickly. Unfortunately, it’s to no end. The rapid closure of restaurants and the resulting lack of operating cash inflows in conjunction with the additional financing requirements, lead to the company’s final knockout punch. In April of 2020, the Vapiano group officially files for insolvency proceedings. The end of an era.

New Beginnings

Because of the pandemic, the majority of the group's subsidiaries in Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, the United States, Sweden, and China also file for insolvency or seek liquidation. The US business never gets sold in the end and is wound down. In the summer of 2020, significant group divestments occur, including the sale of 75% shares in the group's French subsidiaries, shares in franchisor companies, Australian subsidiaries, German subsidiaries, associated companies, self-managed restaurants in Germany, and insolvency-related sales in the Netherlands, Great Britain, and Sweden. The buyer of the Vapiano brand and one of these bundles of Vapiano restaurants is company named Love & Food Restaurant Holding, a consortium led by Mario C. Bauer – a name I told you to remember. Bauer was a former Vapiano board member and led the national and international expansion, opening 200 sites in 33 countries from 2011 to 2017 until he was succeeded by Cornelius Everke. Bauer didn’t feel comfortable with the IPO at the time but clearly has a lot of managerial and entrepreneurial talent.
The buyer consortium is an absolute A-Team comprised of European QSR top league hitters, including the founder of the Pret A Manger chain Sinclair Beecham; Henry McGovern, the founder and Ex-CEO of the giant international restaurant and foodservice operator AmRest; the Van der Valk Family that runs hotels and Vapiano restaurants in the Netherlands, and co-founder and ex-CEO Gregor Gerlach. The acquisition value is 15 million euros and entails 30 Vapiano restaurants in Germany, albeit that’s just the purchase price which comes on top of any capital investment needed to refresh and return the sites to its former glory. Nevertheless, just as a thought experiment, if you can get each site to 2 million euros of revenue and 400,000 euros in operating profit on average, which wouldn’t be an overly aggressively assumption given the company’s history, you’ve got yourself a package that can deliver restaurant-level operating profits of 12 million euros or more. It’s not disclosed how much capex was needed to refresh the operations, just that fact that the overall investment plus purchase price was a middle double-digit million-euro figure. Stil, it probably was a decent purchase. The same consortium buys Vapiano’s French business for 25 million euros just two weeks prior. After the transaction concludes, the master franchise is given to Delf Neumann and his Gastro & Soul GmbH. Neumann is an experienced operator, and he is ambitious to revitalise the brand with new services and products. For example, instead of pizza, the restaurants will be serving pinsa - a flatbread made from sourdough, wheat and rice flour, topped similarly to a pizza. It targets a more health-oriented customer base looking for a less calory heavy option. The menu overall is expanded by including a variety of vegan and vegetarian dishes.
https://preview.redd.it/kpt7ea6red0d1.png?width=1242&format=png&auto=webp&s=c9930ced85ee364e9df414547cae06b47a03fc19
Today Neumann’s Gastro & Soul GmbH operates 18 Vapianos on its own account and has 29 franchise sites, amongst other brands. By the year 2021, Vapiano operates 191 restaurants in 34 countries. This is around 50 fewer sites than before the bankruptcy. The number of branches is particularly thinned out in Germany – from 80 to 55. Nevertheless, Vapiano's home country remains by far the largest market, followed by France with 35 restaurants and Austria with 15 locations. “We have shrunk ourselves to health,” says Bauer in the aftermath and there is no further shrinking planned. Quite the opposite, the smell of expansion is in the air again – pun intended. Not as aggressively as before and with a new menu and ordering process.
Overall, the team around Bauer is filled with industry experts with knowledge and networks gained over decades who have a great track record, a long-term view, and the staying power to let Vapiano breath and finds its way back to success. The pressure of being a public company with all the associated quarterly, half-year and yearly disincentives have been removed. The menu is changed and extended with new types of pasta and sauces with significantly more vegetarian and vegan dishes available. Guests can order with restaurant staff, at terminals or on their phones and there are barcodes attached to the tables identify the respective seat. The food is brought to your table, all at the same time if you are in a group, no more annoyances with waiting in line. There is a plan for smaller, 350 square meter locations, with half the number of guests and significantly fewer staff and less set-up costs required to make the economics work. Locations that capitalize on remote work and increased demand for local lunch options, higher population density with shorter delivery routes and therefore cost-effective in house delivery services are targeted. And Bauer is testing the concept of ghost kitchens, which operate without a dining room or service staff, focusing solely on preparing food for delivery services, which for obvious reasons have a very different operational set up and footprint. Original founder Mark Korzilius however is not entirely convinced. He is not a fan of the pinsa for instance and he considers Vapiano's pizza as its cash cow, flagship product and believes that the core Vapiano proposition of Pizza, Pasta, Bar that has given the company its original success is being diluted. He instead admires the competitor L'Osteria, saying they’ve done a better job by focusing on Italian classics, especially the impressively large pizzas that sticks out beyond the plate is leaving every customer in awe. The guys who run L’Osteria are the same guys who have built Vapiano with him in the first place. Bauer on the other hand, like a true business leader, remains undeterred, stating that he is frequently asked whether Vapiano's restart was bold or foolish. He believes in entrepreneurship, franchising, in his experienced fellow partners and importantly the Vapiano concept. By the year 2024 you can find over 140 Vapiano branded restaurant in 27 countries across the globe, including locations far away from its birthplace like Australia, USA, Columbia, Chile, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. And why not? Italian food is, and will remain to be, incredibly popular. Vapiano offers fresh and tasty food at affordable prices in a good atmosphere. This combination of attributes should attract a lot of customers. It certainly has in the past.

2024.05.11 02:16 HollowPrince665 How not to break the bank.

So I’m still relatively new to Magic. I have a bunch of precons and have watched videos on how to improve on them. That makes sense to me. I really enjoyed using Bonny Paul on Arena. I found the following deck:
https://archidekt.com/decks/7461427/simic_bs_with_a_giant_cow
I really like it but unsure how it would play out. Here is where I’m unsure what to do. I know proxies are kind of a taboo thing but I don’t exactly have the disposable income to drop $200 on a deck I’m unsure of. Would proxying it out and playing it before buying it be okay?
I’m a teacher and father of 2 toddlers. I don’t get out much and Magic is the only thing I get to do outside of a classroom and home xD Standard is getting too expensive to keep up with. I think I’ll do prereleases and drafts but skip the standard nights and just do that on Arena instead. I want commander to be my paper investment.
Thank you.

2024.05.08 01:33 Recoded-Alive An open letter to Flork regarding OWNAJ

Dear u/FlorkofCows, I love your content and have greatly enjoyed seeing your fanbase grow throughout the years, you deserve it! Thank you for being so interactive with your community in the meantime!
I’m writing to you today to express a growing concern in regard to your partnership with the online entity known as “ownaj” (aka Jake). If you simply search “ownaj” on reddit, you will come across a lot posts from ownaj customers dealing with their frustration towards the e-commerce business, and surprisingly they’re all pretty consistent with each other. This prompted me to take a deeper dive.
I looked up ownaj on Trustpilot and there are several 5 star reviews that are likely faked, made by generically-named accounts, which seem to indirectly address all of the complaints listed almost in a way to counter them. Also polarizing when reading the reviews mentioning support, it seems like you either get amazing customer service or you get next to none (which unfortunately seems to be the case for those commenting on your subreddit and social medias)
Then I did a WHOIS lookup to see who owns the ownaj domain, to find out that they’re registered through Domains by Proxy, to hide the owner’s identity. Was unable to find any connection to the brand ownaj and an individual named Jake.
https://ownaj.com itself is really sketchy, though unassuming on the surface due to its sleek design. There is no information on the company itself (“About Us” or “Our Story”) and there is no info on the company’s physical whereabouts, their employees or careers, or how to reach them outside of their built-in “Contact Us” form. Almost zero insight is given into how ownaj operates outside of their “FAQ” page, and it feels deliberate. I was only able to find one address for their business in California, I won’t post it but you can find it on Buzzfile, and it’s a residential home address that’s owned by someone not named Jake according to multiple paywalled info-broker websites. OWNAJ reportedly has between 2 and 4 employees including the owner and possibly his wife.
The more I look into it, the more uneasy this makes me. I would advise caution in associating your brand with this type of sketchy and inconsistent behavior if this keeps up. I’m actually curious now if it was ownaj who initially reached out to you in order to start your partnership, but that’s none of my business.
Is Joey your employee directly or hired through ownaj? Twitter suggests that he is hired through ownaj, and I’m putting on my tinfoil hat to tell you that there’s a very-small-but-not-zero chance that “Joey” is giving you the run-around. My final thought is that if ownaj isn’t a malicious company, then it’s an embarrassingly incompetent one from the POV of someone who previously worked in e-commerce, they do NOT have their florks in a row.
I love you Flork and I don’t want anything to happen that gets in the way of your success, you deserve better and so do the fans!!!
EDIT: The owner of OWNAJ is “Peter Jacob “Jake” Draper”, and the only record of his existence I can find so far is one LinkedIn profile, which shows him having graduated from a now-defunct university and no other work or education experience.
I found the original developer of the website, he is from Bangladesh and stopped working for the company around 2019. He is the only other person willing to admit that they work/worked for OWNAJ. I work in the same profession as him so I was able to connect with him and send him a message asking if he could share any experiences he had working for OWNAJ & PJD.
We are chatting now, though he claims to not remember much from the time; he is a very accomplished individual in his field now so I believe it. I will update this post tomorrow with what I’m able to share. And I will be sending all the info I can get my hands on to Flork.

[Previous] [First] [Patreon] [Next]
'War is the assassin's trade'
-Percy Bysshe Shelley
Marcus stared at the thin, slightly curved arm of steel that protruded out from the snake-humanoid's cloaked form.
His eyes then traced its lithe torso, seeing the thin dark wrappings that clung to its skin, clearly well suited for a night raid like this. The body suit was patched with form-fitting leathers around the chest and kneecaps for protection of only the vitals, and the long shawl that hung from the creature's face gave away nothing to Marcus except the amber eye-slits that blinked horizontally at him from within their visor.
From the black scales he saw between those eyes, and the long, thin tail that trailed from the creature's back, Marcus was certain of his assassin's species.
*A Yokun…*he thought. One of the beasts behind this whole proxy war.
He gulped, watching the serpent close the door to his chamber, noticing the bloodied snout of one of his guards lying just beyond the doorway.
Those guards were of Clan Marrow. Armed and armored. That means one thing: this guy's good.
Marcus licked his lips, thinking of any way he could alert the palace servants.
"I presume you didn't come here to talk," he said, moving slightly to his left, hand reaching into his pocket to precure Gatskeek's dagger.
He got his hand round the hilt. He blinked once, and then he was looking at the tip of the Yokun's blade, its edge glistening with ratman blood.
"Drop it, human," the creature hissed.
Marcus dared not even gulp – the sword (a Wakizashi, by the looks of it) was close enough to his throat that even a single twitch out of line would be instant death.
He let the dagger fall to the ground.
And he waited.
He watched the eyes of his enemy in silence, head rushing as he tried to think of a way out of this.
"I suppose negotiations are out of the picture?" he asked, raising his hands and keeping his body as rigid as possible. "If it's any compensation, I believe we could come to some form of mutually beneficial arrangeme-"
The Yokun had stepped behind him and tied a muzzle round his mouth before he could finish whatever 'plan' he was spinning on the spot to stall for time.
"Be a good monkey and keep quiet," the creature told him. "And you might just keep your head."
Marcus felt the arm of the snake coil round his neck, the other one jabbing into his back to propel him forward.
A woman…he realized, noting the inflection in her voice. And one who, it seems, wants me alive…
And without any other alternative, he allowed himself to be guided outside, stepping over the gradually pooling blood from the two guardsmen lying prone at his doorway.
Clean cuts – across the throat. Absolute precision, no waste, no struggle.
His eyes shot back to try and get a glimpse of his captor.
"Keep moving," she whispered.
You're good, aren't you?
The end of the hallway turned into a crossroads, and Marcus heard a general shout go up from deeper within the palace chambers.
Ahead, two guards ran in tandem with torches burning in their hands. As they turned they saw the pair moving down the dimly lit hallway and were about to call out for aid were it not for the two shuriken that stopped their tongues – embedding themselves deep beneath the chin of each paralyzed rat.
As they fell to the floor together in a spasming, twitching heap, Marcus's assailant finished them off with two masterful mercy strokes of her Wakisashi. It all happened so fast that Marcus couldn't be sure it had happened at all.
His assailant scanned the bottom floors as they entered into a long, spiral stairway that would lead out into the servants' quarters and then the front door of the palace. From the confidence with which this snake moved, avoiding contact with any guards by keeping to the pillars and shadows of the castle's environs, Marcus made two more assumptions:
One: she knew the layout of the castle and
Two: she'd already taken care of the guards at the front door.
So thorough must this girl's preparations have been, that when a general shout went up from the palace courtyard outside – just beside where the quarters of the Glumrat representatives slept – he was actually struck with surprise:
"H-help! Bloody murder…isssss…being…done! Asssssasssssinssss have invaded palaccccce!"
Marcus heard his captor hiss behind him.
You didn't realize it takes more than just precision to kill a Gloomraava, did you? Especially one of Clan Glumrot. You left old Verulex alive, and now you're going to pay the price.
As the snake-fiend practically threw Marcus down the right corridor that led towards the servants' quarters, he began to piece together what must be happening right now – a precision strike at the throats of the war-council…probably based on reports that a meeting had been held on this night, when we would all be gathered together.
And that meant someone gave her the intel…
The Yokun dashed through the servant rats who screamed as they awoke to Marcus's gagged form being bulldozed through the door to their quarters. The Yokun's blade flew to slice at their jugulars like it were a homing eagle, and she simply continued on her way into the long, vine-coated corridor that led down into the palace foyer. Into freedom.
"Wait," Marcus heard her say as she launched both her and him down onto the carpeted floor of the palace and scanned her surroundings.
Marcus could see nothing out of the ordinary – the lilac and strawberries of the foyer were just as bright as they ever had been.
…but, come to think of it, maybe they were just a little too bright to be believed.
As a hail of arrows came flying from the palace doorway Marcus felt himself thrown into the air and spun like a ragdoll as the Yokun's tail whipped about to slash at the storm of projectiles. When he landed, he did so in the snake-woman's arms, and she immediately took up her blade and placed the tip directly under Marcus's throat.
"Don't bother," she told the air before her. "Make one more move, and he dies."
Marcus's eyes flew to see what she evidently could see, and noticed the tell-tale signs of silhouettes glittering against the corrugated steel of the palace door.
Slowly, the spell of indivisibility was lifted, and Marcus looked upon a retinue of familiar, yet bloody face: Deekius, Skeever, and a detachment of Shrykul's halberd-wielding honor-guards.
The king himself stood at the center of their formation, clutching a strip of gauze to his bleeding neck.
"Tsk'alia!" Marcus heard his assailant scoff. "The rodent king yet lives…"
How had she hit them all at once? Marcus's mind railed with nothing else better to do. How could this single woman…without being detected…unless…
The realization pierced him with an intensity that matched the kiss of the Yokun's cold steel under his chin.
There's more than one of them…
That at least told him something: if there was indeed a team of assassins working together here, they had clearly spent themselves too thin, and one of them had been exceedingly sloppy.
She straightened up and pressed the Wakizashi's bloody tip deeper into Marcus's neck, so he could feel the thin trickle of his blood run in a little red river down his throat.
"Make one more move and he dies," she told the ratmen. "You understand, vermin? Your Shai-Alud dies here and now."
Marcus's eyes flew to each of the panting, breathless rats, settling finally on Skeever. He tried to communicate with his eyes flaring eyes and nostrils alone that the snake she-devil was bluffing – that she clearly wanted him alive. But judging from the sagging shoulders and sorrow-filled face of the Talon-Commander, he could tell he wasn't getting through.
"Be…letting…her…pass," Shrykul said. "There is…being…enough…bloodshed on this night."
The guards parted unsteadily, eyeing up the Yokun as she kicked at Marcus's legs to move him forward passed the crowd of his allies. As he looked upon Skeever's face – wracked with pain and fury in equal measure – he felt the ratman give his sleeve a reassuring tug.
"Hands off!" his captor hissed. "Or he dies!"
The rats gave them an even wider bearth, and Marcus had no choice but to stagger towards the exit, looking round only once to see the bloody form of Verulex appear at the top of the castle stairway and be cowed into silence by King Shrykul's shaking head. A sharp sting of pain beneath his ear jerked him back to face the slowly approaching palace gates.
"Eyes forward," the Yokun corrected him.
This time he let out a gulp. He knew that as soon as he left the safety of these gates, the chances of him returning were probably slim. And whatever the snake-fiend had in store for him, it hardly bode well.
The gates to the castle opened and Marcus was thrust into the streets with the Yokun's dark blade glancing his throat as she grimaced, looking about her fervently as though she was waiting for something.
Then, looking to the skies, she saw what she needed to see.
And Marcus's eyes went wide as he realized the situation was far worse than he'd imagined.

2024.05.05 13:00 arthorpendragon What are the intelligence aspects of your plantkin and what do your shifts feel like?

we seemed to be obsessed about making another post about our plantkin, and perhaps this desire originated from the plantkin themselves so here goes. when we shift into our plantkin (some kind of gnarled tree; oak, olive or something else) we feel all encompassing happy emotions as if our plantkin Happytree is the holder of our happy emotions. also we feel phantom shifts in our fingers like we have branches and leaves and just want to wave them around like some evangelical preacher, hehehe. Happytree doesnt seem to be able to speak words or language and we were wondering if anyone has a plantkin that can speak using human language? also what are the things you experience in your various plantkin shifts? also the irony does not escape us, that we joined this plantkin sub just to learn more about plantkin and now one seems to have turned up weeks later. we were also on the fairy sub, wonder if a fairy will turn up soon too? hehehe.

2024.04.30 13:11 Magnospm Tracking Flexibility Gains from Day 1 - Need Tips!

Hey everyone!
I've just started the Calimov 2.0 mobility program to boost my flexibility, which honestly isn't great. I'm doing mostly weightlifting and calisthenics routines, and has pretty bad posture from a young age, and I would really like to change it a bit and to get more flexible.
Would love to get some advice on what moves or metrics are best to keep an eye on to track my progress. Which moves could be 'flexability proxys' and I should keep track of? Also, if you've tracked your flexibility journey before, what do you wish you had noted from the start?
Currently I'm thinking about some basic moves to film:
- easy bridge - Frog stretch - cat-cow - stick shoulder extension - 'Lunge & Reach'
Does this list seem ok? Is anything reduced/ missing?
Cheers for any tips! Looking forward to improving alongside this community.

2024.04.29 03:40 Storms_Wrath The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 505: Alien Minds

First Previous Wiki
Admiral Tenrah returned to the battle map, looking at all the various icons and routes to and from star systems. So far, the Sennes Armada was keeping its pace mostly on track. The delay due to the diplomats from the Misan Li Heptarchies no longer would matter.
King Siran had pulled back from the battlefront against the High Federation in an attempt to pivot to the Hive Union. He had won the battle, but the stragglers included the remaining leadership of the High Federation anyway, so they could continue to remain somewhat organized. The massive civil war would soon spill into a more international affair, due to the King's rhetoric. But that was entirely his fault when he so strongly advocated for the deaths of Cawlarians who had lived on planets for generations that he happened to desire.
And he would not let his name be stained with even the suggestion of a loss. The Battle Planner and Fleet Commander Annabelle Weber were also now on their way to the front, and the diplomats from the Heptarchies were tagging along. Phoebe was in discussions with them now, and supposedly there'd been a few breakthroughs on that front. Whatever she'd promised them or get them to agree to, the fleet buildup along the Hive Union's border with the Heptarchies was slowing.
The Interstellar Gathering seemed to have realized no amount of bluffing would get the High King out of war. Even if he was a proxy force aligned with them, King Siran was not valuable enough for them to risk a wider war. It was just as Tenrah had expected and had told Eyahtni, Kawtyahtnakal, and the Patriarchs when he'd met with them several days ago. Just as a young hatchling couldn't be allowed to stray too far from the nest, there was simply no sense for the Heptarchies to risk economic ruin.
Orith and those who ruled over him would shift their tone while pretending it was a natural decision, not one they'd been forced to make to align with reality.
"I must commend your tactics in the latest training exercise," Tenrah said, ruffling his feathers slightly before respectfully nodding to Annabelle.
"I am pleased to hear such high praise from you, Admiral," the woman said. She was fully dressed in her regulation spacesuit, meaning most of her face was obscured. But Tenrah wouldn't complain since it was more than prudent to be ready for anything. The next unknown ships might not be friendly.
He had also looked into the parties responsible for the lack of communication or warning of the Misan's arrival. As it turned out, general incompetence was to blame. A receiver hadn't been properly calibrated, so the transmission signal had just been noise. He'd given the officer in charge of that an earful before eventually letting up and telling him to do better. A personal visit with the Admiral was one thing. But a second personal visit was quite another.
Tenrah drew a vector toward some of the outer systems controlled by the High King. A few garrison forces were there, but they would be swept away almost instantly. What most concerned him was the shipyards in the region that received most of their metals from a select group of planets in those systems. They were rich in the metals required to forge the alloys needed in the High King's fleet.
The High Federation had been something of a dumping ground for either overthrown species or other alien species that had been deported from their homeworlds before the war broke out. This was reflected in the number of species inhabiting the worlds, each with unique names, traits, and temperaments.
"We plan on taking this path, and then splitting to conquer these systems and disable their metal exporting abilities," he explained. "Then we will move to this system."
He zoomed in more and drew a new vector from where the previous one ended. "We have intelligence that they have at least four planet crackers there. Brey will send FTL suppression satellites through portals on the outer edges, with her portals boosted by our psychic amplifier fields. we will be able to take over the system quickly, and begin the process of either disabling the planet crackers or moving them back to our territory."
"We will need to know the angles the superweapons are at before committing to the battle," Annabelle said. "Otherwise, judging by the trajectory cone you have, we can bypass them entirely and reach Siran within two weeks."
"And that is an interesting proposal. Can you lay out your plan, in that case?"
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Annabelle did so. She and Tenrah discussed the strategy's risks, and they eventually decided that such a tactic, while bold, wouldn't do what they set out to do: ensure the safety of the Cawlarians near the border. They were already trying to evacuate from the coming war front, but cities and planets were large things that took a lot of time to completely empty.
And more garrison forces, whether they were androids from Phoebe or specialized and highly trained defenders from the Union, were still moving in as the civilians evacuated. Kawtyahtnakal had established a fund for them, but many people were too stubborn to leave. Despite the looming threat of war and possible massacre, they still refused to board the passenger ships. Annabelle could respect their tenacity and courage, though she personally believed it was counterproductive.
A few encroaching splinters of Siran's fleet had already struck the evacuation forces. He'd sent around 2% of his ships away to harass all the border systems within reach in an attempt to get the Armada bogged down in defense. But with such small forces and the Union on such high alert, all of the important stations with weak shields were well within the protective layers of planetary shields in the area.
Larger garrisons than necessary were still required, of course, but Tenrah had managed to navigate the desperate concerns of the Feathers and those like them in charge of governing their planets with his natural political skill. He didn't need to ask them for favors because, as an Admiral, he alone held power over how his portion of the fleet would respond. Annabelle had witnessed that loyalty and control well within the organization of his fleet. Even at his advanced age, she continued to be impressed with his adaptability and skill at monitoring three-dimensional battle planes and fields.
She pointed to the cone of possible directions Siran was expected to take. They were generally adjacent to the border, though they would head around the left side of the territory he claimed from the Union. If he reached it, millions of lives would be lost every day. Once he broke the shields entirely, the planets would be utterly glassed down to their mantles.
She'd read up on his methods and had seen videos of them in action. Despite all her training, it still was haunting. The hivemind helped to soothe her when the unpleasant parts of command sizzled up to meet her in the middle of the night.
But they would not impede her on the field of battle. When she went to war, the hivemind suppressed all that wasn't necessary for the mission. It was their agreement, one which she'd asked of it. And being a node of the network meant that her stability was paramount, even more so than her title as Fleet Commander. For if she fell, others could take her place. Protocols ensured and demanded that.
But her place in the hivemind was what allowed it to have any strength this far out. It could form avatars and help with long-range communications, though the main mind back on Earth and Luna obviously remained disconnected from this distance.
"I would normally agree with you, Fleet Commander, but I am reminded of your tactic to use decoy hard light holograms."
"They will suspect that any ships heading right for the barrels, or close enough, are either not valued enough or are the decoys."
"Then all you have to do is make them impossible to ignore," Tenrah said. "I can lend you bombs capable of remaining armed and capable of being triggered inside of hard light holograms, even with jamming involved. Then, they will be unable to ignore them, and the explosions generated would destroy the shields in place around the planet crackers. If they fire the weapons, then the residual magnetic interference will allow us to destroy them, since the shields will be far weakened."
Annabelle could see the potential brilliance of the strategy. But it was just that- potential. In space, there were no obstacles. Without stealth fields, there was no hiding. And with hard light holograms, stealth was obviously off-limits.
They would be left approaching from angles that they would be unable to adapt to. She had her VI plot several routes but was unsatisfied, so she had Edu'frec link into the network to do it. Phoebe had been replaced after contacting a Sprilnav network to ensure she could scrub any programs that may have gotten through to her without distraction.
It would be a terrible thing for a Sprilnav AI to make it to her dreadnaught, for sure.
"We will likely need a threefold diversion at least," Annabelle said. "Maybe fourfold, if we can spare the forces, and brave any minefields that may exist."
"Well," Tenrah began. He pulled up a few schematics of the weapons her dreadnaught carried. "I believe you can solve the minefield issue from a distance, even with the lightspeed limit. After all, they can't move easily. As for the actual attack? I suggest a sixfold flower formation, with a twisting wings accent."
"You will have to show me a diagram of that," Annabelle said, grasping uselessly at the unfamiliar words. Before their integration had begun, there had been a limit to how much doctrine she could memorize.
Tenrah pulled up an image of an alien flower blooming with six petals. And then the image faded, overloading with a stylized ribbon of red shapes. The ribbons spun on their sides every thirty seconds, like corkscrews that were flatter.
"And in this case, the ribbons represent the drone formations. I can send a few carriers into the battle with fighter escorts, though we will need to keep them spread out to avoid any direct lines of sight from the planet crackers."
"I heavily doubt they will waste such shots on carriers," Annabelle said. "And if you commit more, you will overwhelm their defenses. I believe your drones are highly reflective, so only missiles and bullets can deal sufficient damage at the involved speeds and numbers we are working with here."
She tapped the diagram, shifting it by about 45 degrees.
"I believe I can fit a stealth force here, which will engage the back defenses of the planet crackers once they focus their shields frontward. I can likely get a full battlecruiser group in, and if you can press in as a wedge around 10 million kilometers above me from where I come in, and around 30 million kilometers below," Annebelle paused to draw the vectors with her hands, "Then it will aid in my ability to subdue them. It would likely shorten the battle time from a week down to four days."
"Assuming their detection satellites are not capable of seeing it."
"And we will target those too. I believe the first strike can fall on those, since the planet crackers will interfere with their ability to scan behind themselves, and such large power signatures can be noted."
"There is one more problem," Tenrah said. "We are generally working on the assumption of trying to capture these ships, yes?"
"Yes," Annabelle said.
"Then will we board them?"
"Yes, but no. Edu'frec and Phoebe's commando androids will open up the beach heads on the physical surfaces of the planet crackers, while our specialized mental warfare agents will take the fight to them in the mindscape. I assume you have your own plans in that regard?"
"It depends on how we will split the planet crackers. There are 12 in the system. Half and half?"
"That seems prudent," Annabelle replied. She selected the ones that would be most advantageous for her various gambits and strategies to work. They were closer together, which meant more capacity for coordination, mutual aid, and shielding. But it also meant a larger target, one which she could hit from many vectors without worrying about each enemy ship having a wide field of view. Some battlecruisers and cruiser groups were scattered around, but they were not enough to resist the Armada. And once Siran was robbed of a quick way to end the war, the Union would hold the upper hand, capable of committing devastating power to a fleet that remained in a system for a long time.
Yet the same was true for the Union and the Alliance. If the battle took too long, or their command positions were located, then the terrible might of the planet cracker beams would be turned upon them instead. Annabelle's dreadnaught was powerful. More so than all the ones before it. But that didn't mean she wanted to test her shields against alien planet crackers.

Penny was talking to a group of freed slaves on Justicar. These were recent ones who still held quite a bit of trauma. They'd taken to calling her 'Liberator' despite her never identifying herself as such. It was oddly endearing and did make her feel quite a bit better. It was good to just be able to go out and help people.
She felt some perturbations in the mindscape but ignored them. Right now, she needed to ensure that the gangs couldn't continue their horrific industry. She'd taken out most of their heavy equipment and was now waiting for the Guides to finish searching.
Sirens and alarms echoed in the distance. Penny sent psychic energy into her eyes, but she was too far underground to see anything without using the energy itself instead of light to see. Justicar's mind seemed busy, so she couldn't connect with him. As time went on, Penny felt that something was wrong. It was a gut feeling that she couldn't place. But because of that, she was on edge. She made a large shield of psychic energy above them.
She held it for several minutes. Nothing happened, but Penny wouldn't let it down that quickly. Justicar still didn't respond. Her communicator rang. Kashaunta was calling.
"What's going on?" Penny asked.
"The Grand Fleet is-"
Light and heat smashed into her, easily breaking through her shields. She briefly saw tens of thousands of Sprilnav burning before the light overwhelmed her eyes. Her communicator was destroyed. The onslaught was accompanied by a monstrous level of sound. Shockwaves drilled Penny into the melting and fracturing ground, forcing her lower and lower into expanding pools of magma and liquid metal.
The city's upper layers fell upon her, crashing with great and terrible force. But Penny was now fully reinforced with psychic and conceptual energy. She erupted furiously from the rubble. The air around her burned with heat as she continued to accelerate. The armor plates now surrounding her glowed cherry red, but they were white by the time she'd reached space.
She reached the first planetary shield.
"Displace," Penny growled. She forced reality to move as she willed and to place herself where she saw fit. The Grand Fleets were high above, firing upon a small group of ships that had detached from Azeri's fleet. They seemed to be directly attacking the broken-off contingent and not Justicar itself.
So Penny increased her eyesight and analyzed the battle in both real space and the mindscape. Nilnacrawla helped her identify Justicar's targets. The massive Elder was angrier than she'd ever seen him, and his size, which was even larger than Tetelali, made that incarnation of him appear more like a god of wrath. She saw him brutally tear through groups of minds desperately running to avoid him.
She could faintly see spheres of psychic and conceptual energy area denial fields. From this distance, the flagships' strength was truly impressive. Both of them were at least ten times as powerful as Azeri's had been during their battle. It was clear both Kashaunta and Valisada had ordered upgrades.
Then, her attention came to the dreadnaught, which seemed to be at the head of the attack. Penny explored the ship with her psychic power, pushing aside all resistance. Several lasers struck her, but she ignored them, denying their impact in reality against her own.
It glowed with the fury of weapons firing. Missiles and fighters flowed out of its bays. Bullets, nukes, and lasers streamed from red-hot gun barrels. A nuke hit her but didn't explode. She ripped it apart, using the materials to add energy to her reserves.
Justicar continued to go in inside the mindscape. He tore at them like a shark at a school of minnows in a coral reef. His ravenous anger and hatred were frightening, but Penny rapidly got used to it. Calling up her own memories of the innocent people who'd been killed for no reason, Penny wrapped herself in energy and began to erase her signature from the area.
Fighters flew past her, no longer hitting her psychic shields with bullets. Lasers stopped firing at her since she'd moved from her last position, and there was no longer anything for them to track. Penny floated in the stars, with bright blooms of white fusion explosions blossoming around her. And so she moved forward. She reached a cruiser. She reached forward, teleporting past its shields, and shut down the ship's reactor by teleporting all of its fuel into the void.
Soon, a missile from Kashaunta's Grand Fleet found the vessel, and it vanished in another sphere of heat and light. Of course, it was all silent in space. Penny could only hear her heart beating and occasional warnings from Exile or Nilnacrawla at incoming attacks. Exile occupied the area in her ears, which felt weird, but it allowed him to speak without showing himself in the mindscape. Given his nature and the fact that the Grand Fleets likely had detections for speeding space entities, it would be a terrible idea for him to appear there. Nilnacrawla continued to help Penny with the mental aspects of the battle.
He processed the energy input and output that Penny was giving off in the hopes of keeping her off the sensors of the dreadnaught battlegroup. She didn't want to attract the full focus of one of those massive guns. The explosions on Justicar would have been capable of cracking apart a mountain range if not for the extensive dampening Justicar's shields had done. And she'd withstood them only because she could shunt off most of their impact into reality, leaning into her conceptual nature and the nature of Cardinality to escape certain death.
Even with her power, as high as it had ever been, the blow she was taking were the most powerful physical impacts she'd ever endured.
She also suspected Yasihaut's work in this, though she had nothing to prove. She also had to remain vigilant about the Judgment. She couldn't take overly hostile actions, so she didn't just teleport the Sprilnav in the area out of their ships. She tried it on a smaller scale, and a weak pressure from the dreadnaught made her power fail to affect them.
But those Sprilnav were still doomed to die by their commander. But Penny didn't wish to doom the Alliance and herself by taking their deaths into her own hands. And she was stained with enough blood, metaphorical and literal. The ashes of the people she'd freed had fallen away with her ascent into the atmosphere, but the gritty memory and feel of them never would.
Once again, she'd been powerless to save those who'd needed her. And if she'd had that power, what could she have really done? Would she have been forced to stand there and take it? Or could she have really fought back in a way that wouldn't be turned against her in the Judgment? And was she wrong for considering all of that during such a horrendous time, when she'd literally seen thousands of people turned to slag and ash before her very eyes just ten minutes ago?
Penny burned with shame and grief. She hated this. She hated that things always turned to this. Why couldn't the galaxy just leave people alone? Why did there have to be so much suffering? Her anger threatened to overwhelm her, but with a herculean effort from her, Nilnacrawla, and Cardi, it was beaten back.
Penny felt Justicar getting close to breaking through the shield. She sent a small jolt of power to its underside. A thick bolt of psychic lightning infused with rage leaped from her arms, shattering the shield completely and taking roughly half her power. In the dreadnaught, the antimatter reactor she could sense radiating its energy suddenly lost all coolant access.
She pushed her psychic energy into herself and her conceptual energy into words that she harmonized into existence with the force and might of her will.
"Cardinality: One to zero. Reversal."
A heap of her energy left her instantly, stopping a budding explosion from ripping the dreadnaught apart. Justicar absolutely ravaged whoever was inside that ship, including what appeared to be a leader figure in the mindscape. Penny watched Justicar smash the Elder's corpse in his jaws and tear his soul from his body before shredding it violently with a contraption that looked straight out of a horror movie.
She let the explosion go, and so it went. The dreadnaught cracked in half. The Grand Fleets, which had never stopped firing, finally broke through the shields as the circuits failed to supply them with power. Hundreds of thousands of lives winked out instantly, torn to subatomic particles by beams coming from two different flagships. Penny went straight to Kashaunta, appearing on the ship's bridge still in stealth. To their credit, her guards noticed immediately and bared their weapons at her.
The guns that were powerful enough to blast holes in skyscrapers and sturdy enough to withstand a fall from orbit with hardly a scratch unloaded their payloads into her. Penny opened her mouth, and strings of psychic energy writhed outward, wrapping themselves around the guns and wrenching them out of the claws of Kashaunta's guards while the impacts' explosions were contained by thick shields.
Kashaunta herself had already drawn her sword but hadn't moved an inch.
"Penny," she said dryly. "Welcome to my ship. I apologize for your reception."
A new shield came down on both of them, preventing their words from reaching the ears of Kashaunta's subordinates.
"Think nothing of it, Elder Kashaunta. What punishments will be given to the Grand Fleet Commander?"
"Well, technically I am not the Grand Fleet Commander of this fleet," she said. "So that is not really something I can enforce. However, the Grand Fleet Commander of the 85th Grand Fleet does wish to talk with you, Justicar, and myself about what just occurred."
"And you believe him?" she exclaimed.
"He sent transcripts of the message he sent to one Elder Solei, asking him to cease his actions before it was too late."
"Even the Alliance can make deepfakes," Penny said.
"And do you think I would be ignorant of such things, child?" Kashaunta asked. "We have ways around those. That is why we still have a society after billions of years of time to screw it all up. Deepfakes are a problem of less advanced species and cultures, not those with the tools to handle them."
"Which are AIs, which you also ban throughout the galaxy."
"Yes."
"Isn't that hypocritical?"
"Yes, it is," Kashaunta said. "You can go and complain to the Judges who decided that if you wish, though asking them to think of the children instead of preserving the power of the entire Sprilnav species will get you laughed at by a billion mouths."
Penny felt something in her mind take offense to Kashaunta's wording. It didn't feel like it was part of her, but it also did. The shock of all the lives lost hit her again, making her scowl.
"So there will be nothing done?" Penny growled.
"No. Prepare for a neutral and level-headed discussion. If you wish to have any seat at a table such as this, you will conduct yourself with decorum. You will not accuse Elder Valisada of being responsible for whichever fool did this, and you most certainly will not baselessly claim that Yasihaut is at fault for this, even if it is likely that she or her backers are. It is time you learn the lesson that all Elders have: there are always more Sprilnav. Recognize that this was a strike against you without casting aside all of your goodwill among those that matter."
"Those that matter," Penny mused. "Sometimes I forget what you are."
Kashaunta stepped forward, eyes narrowing. She let out a hiss.
"You saw a few thousand people die, and now you're back to the racism again? Grow up. People die all the time in this galaxy. You complain about the status quo. I would respect that, if you could stomach what is required to change it. Death will continue to run rampant, and you will be the reason more die no matter what you do. 760 sextillion Sprilnav, Penny. And you cry over ten thousand?
During the Source war, we sent two years olds to war. You don't get to slide back into comfortable dumb hatred of our species because of a few stupid people. Rest assured, if you ever get this Alliance-based order, you or your successors will become tyrants. There will be a human who has the power and will to start wars, and enact genocides, for functionally no reason. Need I remind you of World War Two, and World War Three? If you multiply the population of Humanity by a trillion, that means you'll get a trillion Pol Pots, or Hitlers, or Genghis Khans.
And a hell of a lot more dumb idiots in power, which ascribes most of the history of nearly every species in the galaxy. Notice how Valisada and I both fired on Solei once he decided to be an adult daycare nominee? Notice how Valisada has not fired at us, or Justicar, and is trying his best to start a constructive dialogue? People die in war, Penny. This is reality. And you cast your disdain onto me, the only Sprilnav keeping you alive in this place, because I happened to be born an Elder. But no. I'm still some alien, right? Just another dirty animal for you to kill when the Judgment ends."
Kashaunta's fury caught Penny off-guard. The Elder truly meant her words. Penny had deeply offended her, cracking open the facade she usually maintained. The smug feeling at having made Kashaunta go on such a tirade faded when she considered the circumstances. Maybe she had acted like a child. But she hadn't said anything truly deserving of such a furious tirade, had she?
Not unless her proclamation that she remembered 'what Kashaunta was' had an implication that she didn't understand. Kashaunta was a mass murderer, one who was more than willing to justify it when necessary. And she downplayed the fact that this attack was on Penny herself and on thousands of innocents on a Sprilnav planet where she was meant to be safe. This wasn't a pair of assassins in the night, slipping poison into water or dropping snakes into a bed. This was a much more insidious and terrifying evil. Penny had been powerless to stop it.
Penny knew she was right, but Kashaunta did not. Could she truly weigh her scant decades against Kashaunta's billions of years of age? Perhaps. Age was not wisdom, though it certainly could be experience. Kashaunta turned around and started to walk away. Sadly, Penny still needed her.
"I'm sorry, Kashaunta. I am... incredibly charged. I am very pissed right now. I am not apologizing for how I feel about this attack. I have every right to be upset, and I will remain so. I will not be bullied or cowed into submission, even by a thousand more tirades. There comes a point where something must be done. But if you are upset over what I said, then I would at least like an honest clarification why."
"Because you had showed me you could think like a person should. That you didn't see people's species anymore. That you were becoming less racist. And yet, when you are cut raw, you still see me as a Sprilnav Elder alone, and therefore complicit in this massacre I literally did everything I could to do stop before it worsened. You said you knew 'what I am' as if you'd forgotten that. And it is clear that you meant that you'd forgotten your belief that I am some dirty criminal Sprilnav, who deserves to be slaughtered in the dark for the crime of being born in her species.
You care more for the ash on Justicar than you do for what I have given you. Your simplistic view of reality would mean that if you could push a button to kill us Elders, you'd do it, robbing countless families of their loved ones, because you now remember 'what we are,' and are again regressing away from your previous growth."
"I am one person, Kashaunta. I don't understand why you care this much about me. But I can recognize that the message you received is one of terrible bigotry. I am suffering, every day, every week, that I remain in this god-forsaken place. It hurts for you to dismiss the people I care about, even for a moment, dying just because there are many of them. But that does not excuse what I said to you despite the death toll you carry on your own head. It was a half-truth."
Kashaunta laughed. "Do you know why I care so much about what you think, Penny? It is because you are the other aliens. All at once. The Alliance is the face of all things 'alien' in many places. Remember what conceptual energy is? Lecalicus told you, I believe. You represent more than just your own views. And if you're able to forgive a speeding space entity, but not me, then it shows that we will never have peace. That no matter what, this cycle of hatred will continue, and I will need to either build a new galaxy with aliens that don't hate us for our ancient crimes, or just figure out another way. You are the face of the rest of the galaxy, Penny. And you have just told me that you still hate me for being an Elder. After I thought you had changed."
"And you believe you are undeserving of such hatred?"
"Penny," Kashaunta said. "The Alliance didn't exist when many of these events happened. Some of your grievances are older than the mountains on Earth. You say you hate us for genocides that happened so long ago that they no longer hold any meaning. There is no compensation we can give to dead species on dead worlds. What you want is an alien species to hate and blame for all the universe's problems. Because it is easier to hate us than to confront reality. And we are the ones you have been told to hate."
"They were not small things. It was the deaths of trillions of people, Kashaunta."
"Yes. And it was wrong. I can understand that. But what do you think will happen when your Alliance, filled with people who hate us, takes over? You will see humans bombing Sprilnav schools, and the hivemind will do nothing, for it will share that hate. Acuarfar will abduct and torture us. Knowers will devour our children. And in the face of that? You would turn a blind eye, because it is too hard to solve with a simple fix. You will only propagate generational hatred, just as all the Alliances and Galactic Republics and Peace Unions did before you.
Because underneath your message of equality for all species is oppression and genocide for us, the villains in your little story. That is what happens in reality, once the benevolent dictators die. And you, who have lived with us, eaten with us, and talked with us, will sit upon your golden throne, and when I am brought before you, naked, bleeding, and in need of support, you will throw me away, because all I am to you is an Elder. That mindset is exactly what stands in the way of peace. It is why I stopped giving you aliens chances for so long. And having to argue this with you at all makes me think you may no longer be worth my effort."
More manipulation. Penny was ready to shout at her, but Nilnacrawla pulled her thoughts away from blind anger. And it did feel unnatural for her. Alien.
"This is not peace," Penny said. "This is war. And we are circumstantial allies. I will not become what you claim."
"I have sown the seeds of a thousand despots," Kashaunta said. "I recognize them when I see them because I have reaped the heads of a million more."
Penny sighed. She wanted to resist and continue arguing, but it wouldn't get her anywhere. Now that she had thought about it, she was unlikely to overturn a viewpoint set in a billion years of experiences. Perhaps Penny could explore this later, when she had time to properly process it all.
"Very well. I will go to this meeting of yours, and I will conduct myself with decorum. However, while I refuse to belittle or forget thousands of deaths, I am sorry that you feel this way."
"But you are not sorry about making me feel so."
"No," Penny replied. She suppressed her emotions more, taking the time to carefully consider her words. Kashaunta was wrong and oddly sensitive right now. Saying the wrong thing could damage far more than their mutual feelings. As much as she wanted to win this argument, Kashaunta was who she was. She was the alien dictator keeping the Alliance alive.
"We are both right in some ways, and perhaps we might be both wrong, too. This only shows how tough the road will be. We at least are consciously trying to come to an understanding. But for the billions of Alliance citizens, quintillions of aliens, and sextillions of Sprilnav? It is a gargantuan task. And... right now, I don't think it is possible."
"It isn't," Kashaunta said. "And it won't be for thousands of years. But we don't get some neat little time skip to wait and solve all of our problems for us. Change will start only when we make it."
Kashaunta was throwing her a bone, then. They both knew the argument couldn't continue right now.
"So we have an understanding, then," Penny said. "Hatred will remain, but it must be minimised. That way, cultural and social pressure will eventually stamp it out, and we may have peace."
"No. We will have a truce, which will only become peace with much more work. The Alliance is a nation that is 24 years old. Only a single generation has grown up within it. Negotiations will be hard with so many who remember the hatred. But Valisada is not like other Sprilnav. He will seek to bring a hybrid war to you and the Alliance, unless you can convince him that you truly mean to bridge the divide. You are clearly misguided, but have a genuinely good heart. That will make life hard for you. Your words today would have spelled the death of you and the Alliance, had I not established this shield around us to hide them. Out of the spirit of our friendship, I will not request a favor in return for this boon."
"Thank you, Kashaunta. Though I'm not sure I can consider you a friend."
"The fact that you bothered to listen to my side of things, in this limited aspect, despite the hurt you must feel right now, proves otherwise. I am well aware of my past crimes, Penny. I know that my emotions today were a weakness I should have been able to seal, and that you will still see me for who I was, and not who I am. I know how it sounds for me, a killer and a ruler, to be upset at being confronted. But that is how I am. I still have my pride as an Elder, and there is only so far it can be pushed. Who I was certainly would qualify as beyond evil. But to remain at the top, there are limits to how far you can swing into benevolence.
I cannot atone. Do not try to make me repay debts that you don't own. If you are ever to have more Elders on your side, whether Progenitors or otherwise, you will need to learn to deal with this. There will be people with death tolls higher than the population of the Alliance, who were once the heart of evil and are now at least acceptable. The first step will be recognizing that, yes, we are in fact friends, despite my history. Because only from friendship and understanding can hope come."
"I will think about this more. My feelings about this, and about you, have not yet solidified."
"I was wrong for what I said to you, Penny. We are both on edge, and said things that we didn't properly express. We should get our heads in order before re-entering this argument with logic instead of emotions."
"I agree. I will go and see who I can save. And I will think more about this. I freed people from slavery, and watched them die today. Respectfully, I must spend some time away from you for now."
Penny left the ship. In something near her subconscious, anger remained. When she landed in the rubble once again, she missed a small but steady stream of conceptual energy wafting into her from below.

2024.04.27 02:58 sarah_regal29 Why Regina blaming Snow is deeper than you thought

This is a subject that comes up often enough so I thought I would make a post about it. It's no secret the show has flaws and a few non-sensical elements, however this particular issue, while considered ridiculous by a large portion of the fandom, is one of the most realistic and well written elements of the show.
Acknowledging the effects of Cora's abuse is often rejected as a justification of Regina's behavior when, objectively, it is not. Having been abused, doesn't give her the right to abuse others, especially innocents. I understand some of Regina's fans will excuse everything she does and, given how toxic the fandom has been at times, the caution is warranted. However this post is not meant to absolve Regina of her crimes or convince anyone to side with her but to provide an insight into the character's psyche and explain why it is not so crazy Regina ended up hating Snow.
*Disclaimer: I'm not a psychiatrist or any kind of mental health professional. I just read a lot of studies, papers and the likes. This is not by any means a diagnosis or a profile of the character. This is just what I've come to understand from my readings on the subject and the material provided by the show. If any professional out there wishes to correct any aspect of this post, I will gladly do so.
Just one last time to make sure it's not an issue: none of what I'm about to discuss justifies, excuses or otherwise validates the abuse Regina inflicts on people. This post only means to look at the thought process of the character, how it ties into the theme of childhood abuse and why her blaming Snow for Daniel's death is the result of a deeply flawed coping mechanism. It is not meant to convince anyone to side with Regina or attack the character of Snow White.*

Decentering ourselves

We, as outsiders, are able to rationalize what happened and recognize Snow as a victim. She was a child confiding in an adult she perceived as safe. Cora exploited her grief and naïve worldview. Through that lens, it all seems ridiculous : if we can see that, so should Regina.
Right?
Well, no. This viewpoint centers our own thought process when it's the character's that we should consider. It is ridiculous to us, the viewers who are far removed from the situation, but Regina is in the thick of it. The way she perceives events is therefore different due to her unique perspective. Regina blaming Snow isn't random, it's a direct result of Cora's abuse affecting the way she processes her emotions. Cora is a part of Regina's life, some would say an overbearing presence, she is the one to crush Daniel's heart. It's not like she is unavailable. So, why doesn't Regina blame her? Why the single focus on Snow?
Cora is abusive, has been so for Regina's entire life and it has conditioned her to adopt a specific attitude, normalize harmful behaviors and process emotions differently. This conditionning directly influences how Regina perceives and reacts to the outside world. As the show progresses, it becomes increasingly obvious Regina has internalized a lot of her mother— they do an incredible job in season 2 showcasing the various ways in which Regina's transformation into the Evil Queen simply turned her into a more intense version of Cora— this process of internalization during the child's development has been studied in what is called Object Relations Theory. Amongst the different works on the subject, I want to focus on Fairbairn's. Feel free to read his papers if the subject interests you.
What is referred to as objects are people most of the time. The term comes from Freud who liked to use military and biological terms in his works.

The morale defence

Fairbairn believed a child is wholly dependent on their care-givers and as such, develops their views (of themselves and others) based on them. He focused his theories on the primary care-giver, during his time it was mostly the mother. He observed how children internalized and repressed mistreatment in their subconscious because their conscious selves was not equipped to handle it. He observed children whose needs have been neglected and/or who have been abused had trouble admitting to their parents' mistreatment, developping what he called the moral defence. Here is a snippet taken directly from his paper:
At one time it fell to my lot to examine quite a large number of delinquent children from homes which the most casual observer could hardly fail to recognize as ‘bad’ in the crudest sense—homes, for example, in which drunkenness, quarrelling, and physical violence reigned supreme. It is only in the rarest instances, however, (and those only instances of utter demoralization and collapse of the ego) that I can recall such a child being induced to admit, far less volunteering, that his parents were bad objects. It is obvious, therefore, that in these cases the child’s bad objects had been internalized and repressed. What applies to the delinquent child can be shown to apply also to the delinquent adult—and not only to the delinquent adult, but also to the psychoneurotic and psychotic. For that matter, it also applies to the ostensibly ‘normal’ person. It is impossible for anyone to pass through childhood without having bad objects which are internalized and repressed.
[....]
If the delinquent child is reluctant to admit that his parents are bad objects, he by no means displays equal reluctance to admit that he himself is bad. It becomes obvious, therefore, that the child would rather be bad himself than have bad objects; and accordingly we have some justification for surmising that one of his motives in becoming bad is to make his objects ‘good’. In becoming bad he is really taking upon himself the burden of badness which appears to reside in his objects. By this means he seeks to purge them of their badness; and, in proportion as he succeeds in doing so, he is rewarded by that sense of security which an environment of good objects so characteristically confers. To say that the child takes upon himself the burden of badness which appears to reside in his objects is, of course, the same thing as to say that he internalizes bad objects. Pages 63-67 of Psychoanalytic Studies of the Personality (The Repression and the Return of Bad Objects (with special reference to the War Neuroses)(1943))
The moral defence is essentially the child deciding to cope with the abuse they are facing by constructing a safe environment and turning their bad objects (their parents) into good objects thus taking on the burden of the badness. It gives them the much coveted feeling of being cared for and safety their environment in its original form does not provide but also a sense of control over their own life. Regina is convinced of Cora's love and good intentions towards her in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. Always outright rejecting assertions to the contrary. The scene showcasing that phenomenon occurs in 1x18. Regina and Cora argue and the latter uses magic to "win" and re-establish control. Pay attention to Regina's response to being physically restrained and hurt.
"I'll be good."
This quote indicates Regina believes the fault lies with her. This is happening because she was being bad and not because Cora is abusive and seeks to control through violence. It can be noted Regina was simultaneously placating Cora, telling her what she wished to hear, so she may be freed. However, the specific phrasing reveals there was more to it. First the use of future tense, implying Regina knows her current behavior is not "good" thus the promise of being good in the future.
Then, consider this: I'll be good. What does it mean?
It is extremely vague, how will she be good, what was she doing that was bad? Most of us wouldn't see Regina's behavior in this scene as bad. Cora spoke of obedience but that is not what Regina uses to placate her. She doesn't say I'll obey, she specifically says I'll be good despite how very little it means. What this tells us is Regina's view of herself is inherently negative.

Regina's self-esteem

This, once again, goes back to her relationship to her mother. More specifically, Cora's opinion of her. Most likely, good/bad is the feedback she's received throughout her life. If she does something right she is my darling girl (2x02) if she does something wrong, she is a foolish girl (1x18). Good or bad depending on if she could reach Cora's expectations. There is nothing wrong with Regina's behavior but she's always been told there was so she's learned to think of herself as bad unless she receives indication to the contrary. This arbitrary valuing system ruined Regina's self-esteem. Fairbairn believed a child's greatest need was to be loved and failure to meet that need stunted their development keeping them in a state of dependence on their parent in pursuit of that love and validation of their worth as an individual.
In the older child this experience is one of intense humiliation over the depreciation of his love, which seems to be involved. At a somewhat deeper level (or at an earlier stage) the experience is one of shame over the display of needs which are disregarded or belittled. In virtue of these experiences of humiliation and shame he feels reduced to a state of worthlessness, destitution or beggardom. His sense of his own value is threatened; and he feels bad in the sense of ‘inferior’. The intensity of these experiences is, of course, proportionate to the intensity of his need; and intensity of need itself increases his sense of badness by contributing to it the quality of ‘demanding too much’. At the same time his sense of badness is further complicated by the sense of utter impotence which he also experiences. Page 113 of Psychoanalytic Studies of the Personality (Endopsychic Structure Considered in Terms of Object-Relationships) (1944)
I was discussing this with someone on youtube and they used a very interesting phrase. They said Regina cannot believe in herself unless someone else does it for her. The example they cited was Wilma and how Regina seemed to believe she could change because Snow believed she could. However, the minute they stumble upon the slaughtered village and Snow's belief disappears so does Regina's. She attempts to walk Snow back to her earlier belief but it only gives her away. Regina believes she isn't good enough until someone says so. It is consistent with what we see of Cora's parenting. This exchange in 1x18 as Regina is being physically restrained showcases Cora's devaluing of Regina :
Regina: Why can’t I just be myself?
Cora: Oh, because you can be so much more. If you’d just let me help you…
Translation: Regina is not enough as is and needs her mother's guidance. Her current worth is diminished by Cora because the greatest threat to her control over Regina is her self-esteem. If Regina realizes she deserves better, Cora will lose all control over her. Regina is kept isolated so the only indication of her worth will come from her mother.

The dynamics of a narcissistic mother's household

At this point, some people will mention Henry Senior. To be honest he doesn't count. Yes he loved Regina but he also enabled Cora's behavior. In 2x02, when Regina comes to him with concerns over her darkening thoughts, what is his response?
Regina: Daddy, you don’t know what Mother’s doing to me. It’s like she’s turning me into her. I have to get away.
Henry I: Get away? But tomorrow’s the wedding, child.
Regina: I don’t want to marry the King. I’ve told you that.
Henry I: Well, you’re certain it isn’t just cold feet?
Regina: Daddy, this is not cold feet. This… This is… This is insanity. I’m angry all the time. She’s making me crazy.
Henry I: She wants to give you everything she never got for herself.
Henry does exactly the same thing Cora does. He invalidates Regina's feelings and diminishes her concerns. For all intents and purposes, he treats her like a child who does not know what they want. He makes excuses for Cora, picking her side and making one thing clear: he is not a safe space for his daughter, he doesn't truly listen to her because he is more concerned about keeping Cora happy. Regina did not value her father as she saw him as her mother's mouthpiece, not really a person in his own right. There is a reason she made him the help as Queen. This post isn't about him so we won't look into that more but a lot can be said there.
From my research and experience, the answer is clear: Father is revolving around Mother like a planet around the sun. The narcissist needs to be married to a spouse who will allow her to be at the center of all the action. That is how it has to be if the marriage is to survive. In the family drama, the narcissist is the star, and her spouse takes a supporting role. A man gets himself into this situation for many reasons, but for our discussion the most pertinent point is that he is the kind of person who accepts this behavior from his spouse and, most of the time, enables her. Perhaps he doesn’t always want to, but he does, because he has learned over time that this is what works with her. Because the father focuses on his wife, his pact with the mother can make him look narcissistic too. He is unable to attend to the needs of his daughter. Pages 65-66 of Will I Ever Be Good Enough?
This book is all about narcisstic mothers and the effect they have on their daughters. It was written by Karyl McBride, a therapist, if you wish to check it out. This book was very enlightening and provides a insight into the recovery journey for women who grew up with mothers like this. The book takes great care to highlight the various effects of parental narcissism so it's a great read if you're curious or if you think you may be dealing with that. To go back to our case, Henry Senior, knowingly or not sacrificed Regina's needs to cater to Cora's and the show even addresses it in the Underworld arc with his unfinished business being his inaction faced with Cora's abuse of their daughter. He knows he should intervene but it's more important to him to keep the peace than to be there for his child.
Cora, as a narcisstic mother, views Regina as an extension of herself. She is akin to some mothers in beauty pageant for toddlers, you know the type, in the sense she is living vicariously through her daughter. Cora wants to be queen but couldn't so now Regina has to be queen. To hell with Regina's own wishes, it is what Cora wants that matters. She actually fluctuate between the engulfing mother and the ignoring mother. Between the mother who controls everything and the mother who can't be bothered. Cora controlled every aspect of Regina's life from clothes to food but never cared to give her the attention she craved. The Underworld Arc once again touches upon that with the scenes of Regina as a child. Cora never has time to play with her but she finds time for lessons and condecension.
I find the scene of Daniel's death to be so well written with the way it showcases Cora's ability to gaslight, manipulate, intimidate and devalue in a short amount of time. Let's take a look:
Regina: Mother, I-
Cora: Don’t. You sneak out of my house in the dead of night, and think I won’t notice? How dare you.
Regina: You’re impossible to talk to. Stop with the magic and listen to me. I want to be with Daniel.
Cora: Oh, you don’t know what you want. But I do. I didn’t make the sacrifices I did in life, to get you to the cusp of greatness, so that you could end up the wife of a stable boy.
Regina: But it’s my life.
Cora: You foolish girl. It’s mine. After what I had to do… The deals, I had to make to get us out of poverty, to get us this life, and you just want to toss it away?
Daniel: Stay strong, Regina.
Cora starts with reminding Regina of her place in their dynamic. Cora is the head of their household: her house, her rules. It works because Regina justifies herself immediately. What this does is place Regina in a position where she is once again lower than Cora and must earn her approval. It's a position Cora is used to. Regina then makes it clear: she wants Daniel but Cora doesn't listen because, in the past when they've been in that position, she never had to. She could get Regina back in line through intimidation. Besides, Regina can't know what she wants because Regina is not her own person. She is an extension of Cora. She then proceeds to victimize herself. She sacrificed a lot to get there, if Regina lives her life as she sees fit, she is spitting in her face.
Regina attempts to push back and assert ownership over her life. Cora's response shows she realized her control has slipped further than it ever had before. Cora shows her true colors briefly: it's all about her. She dresses it up in an attempt to guilt trip but the mask slipped for a second. Her victimization is reflected in her use of pronouns, I for sacrifices, us for gain and you for waste. She's laying it on thick. Who really gained here? Regina had no guarantee to ever be born if Cora didn't "sacrifice". Who wanted this life? Not the unborn baby. Note the use of foolish girl we mentionned earlier. I lost for us so you can't throw it away. Blatant attempt at emotional blackmail.
However, Cora recognizes her defeat when Daniel gets involved. Regina never had that presence in her life to back her up and be there to validate her feelings and support her. Daniel is there, giving her the reassurance she needs to leave. He doesn't fight her battles for her but he's there to lend strength.
Regina: Your magic can’t keep us apart. I love him.
Daniel: And I love her.
Cora: And I love her, too.
Regina: If you loved me, you wouldn’t try to keep us apart.
Cora: And if you loved me, you wouldn’t try to run away.
Regina: I’m sorry, but this is my happiness. We’re going.
Cora: No, you’re not.
Regina: So, what’s your plan? You’re going to keep us here forever? Because that’s what you’ll have to do.
At that point, Cora is faced with the failure of her first tactic. Regina isn't cowed by her magic anymore, she fully intends to leave. Victimization didn't work countered by Daniel's support. So, she adapts her strategy. Cora has perfected the use of affection as a tool to influence Regina. I use the word affection because Cora doesn't show love, love is unconditional but Cora's affections were dependant on Regina "earning it". When Regina behaved as Cora expected, she was rewarded with it, when Regina showed doubts and signs of breaking away from her mother's influence, Cora enticed her back with scraps of attention, praises and the likes. Here, Daniel's love is winning over hers in Regina's eyes, mainly because it's genuine. Therefore, Cora has to switch gears once again. If Regina can't be won back then Daniel has to be lost but she needs to regain control first. How does she do that?
Cora: So, this is… Your decision? This will make you happy?
Regina: It already has.
Cora: Then, who am I to stop you?
Regina: Thank you, mother.
Cora: Daniel. If you want to have a life together, a family… Then, there’s one important lesson I can impart on you. It’s what it means to be a parent. You always have to do what’s best for your children.
Daniel: Thank you. I understand. Because that’s what you’re doing now.
Cora: Yes. It is.
Regina: Mother! No! No! No, no, no. Mother, why have you done this?
Cora: Because this is your happy ending.
Regina: What?
Cora: Oh, you have to trust me, Regina. I know best. Love is weakness, Regina. It feels real now. At the start, it always does. But, it’s an illusion. It fades. And then, you’re left with nothing. But power, true power, endures. And then, you don’t have to rely on anyone to get what you want. I’ve saved you, my love.
Cora feigns defeat. Honestly, top notch acting, the little hesitation, the resignation. She seems so genuine but at the same time there's this uneasy feeling screaming it's too easy that puts the viewers on edge. Props to Barbara Hershey for this performance. Regina should really see it coming but she doesn't, that's what shows her ever lasting hope her mother will love her at last, and Cora successfully separates them physically. What is interesting about this moment is how Cora re-establishes her control over Regina. By now, she has accepted Daniel's word outweights hers so she gets his seal of approval on his own death.
That's what you're doing now.
It may seem insignificant but getting Daniel to agree with her has the same effect as Henry agreeing with her. It chips away at Regina's feeling of security with them. They're not really on her side. When Cora defends her action as being in Regina's best interest, there is no pushback. The statement is allowed to sink into Regina's mind unopposed. She is so lost and struck by grief, the absurdity barely even registers. Cora's following words serve to further devalue Daniel and his love. It was a weakness, it wasn't real, it was a trick, an illusion that can be taken away and once it is, you're left with nothing. In Regina's vulnerable state, the words ring true because she really is left with nothing.
Daniel is gone.
Look at her face as the fact truly settles in. Regina is crying because she feels her mother is right and then Cora says this: you don’t have to rely on anyone to get what you want. I’ve saved you, my love. The tears stop then.
Cora is preaching power as a means to be self-sufficient but in a rare moment of clarity, Regina realizes it's bullshit. Cora needed Regina to get what she wanted. Cora isn't all powerful which is why the next sentence matters so much. I've saved you, if Regina needed to be saved, she is not self-sufficient. Cora may not be all powerful but Regina does not have any power. Yet. A subtle reminder of why Cora is still on top in their dynamic and why Regina can't seek oppose her.
Regina: You’ve ruined everything. I loved him. I loved him!
Cora: Enough! I’ve endured this long enough. Now, clean yourself up, wipe away your tears, because now… You’re going to be Queen.
Notice the use of past tense. She loved him not love, loved. Love fades, doesn't it? I think it's an interesting detail. It's almost as if Regina is doubting her own feelings and their realness. The way she repeats it feels like an attempt at convincing herself as well as Cora. Icing on the cake is after devaluing love, Cora then purposefully uses it to justify her actions. It was all out of love so is love real or is it an illusion? Gaslighting at it's finest. Regina know longer knows what to believe, which is it? Cora's contradicting herself and the confusion only serves to make Regina feel crazy. Either she accepts her mother did it out of love or love isn't real. Without Daniel's support, Cora regains control through intimation in one burst of her short temper.
We see Cora flexing her manipulation muscles once more in 2x12. Regina never really grew up the way she was supposed to and in many ways is still "dependent" on Cora. This goes back to Fairbain's assertion a child's greatest need is to be loved and have that loved validated by their care-givers. He credited the failure to satisfy this need as the reason children stay attached to abusive parents. They do so in the hope that they will be rewarded with love over time.
What emerges as clearly as anything else from the analysis of such a case is that the greatest need of a child is to obtain conclusive assurance (a) that he is genuinely loved as a person by his parents, and (b) that his parents genuinely accept his love. It is only in so far as such assurance is forthcoming in a form sufficiently convincing to enable him to depend safely upon his real objects that he is able gradually to renounce infantile dependence without misgiving. In the absence of such assurance his relationship to his objects is fraught with too much anxiety over separation to enable him to renounce the attitude of infantile dependence; for such a renunciation would be equivalent in his eyes to forfeiting all hope of ever obtaining the satisfaction of his unsatisfied emotional needs. Frustration of his desire to be loved as a person and to have his love accepted is the greatest trauma that a child can experience Page 39 of Psychoanalytic Studies of the Personality (A Revised Psychopathology of the Psychoses and Psychoneuroses (1941))
Rewatch the scene taking place in Regina's car in 2x12. The way Regina behaves is particularly interesting. She starts off strong in her resolve but pay attention at how she dissolves, rather quickly, back to the little girl who needs her mother's comforting embrace.
Seriously rewatch that scene.
Cora knows which button to push to get Regina exactly where she wants her. She starts with pitting Regina against Emma for the role of Henry's mother thus devaluing her in the one role that matters to her. She continues with instilling doubts about the way Regina is perceived by others (will it make a difference if they know she didn't kill Archie?), knowing exactly how her intervention has affected Regina's outlook on redemption.
So, what is Regina's position here? She is isolated, convinced everyone hates her and her love is rejected by Henry. Regina is more or less put back in a position where she needs reassurance she can be loved and what does Cora offer? Finally giving Regina what she craved her whole life. The scene ends with Regina seeking comfort in the arms of her mother exactly as Cora intended. Without any support and anyone to believe for her, Cora plays Regina like a fiddle. The same scene with Henry or Emma in the car would play closer to the scene in 1x18 with Daniel. I'm not sure Cora would kill Henry though.

Regina's need for maternal love

Regina has this unfulfilled need for her mother's love causing her to jump at any opportunity to feel scraps of said love, meaning she can never blame Cora for anything. If she does, Regina would be indirectly admitting Cora does not love her and doing so would mean giving up the hope of ever feeling the much coveted love of her mother. She simply cannot do that. That need is only intensified by Cora's constant use of affection as a tool. Regina chases and chases but can never reach her mother, not truly and so the need stays forever unfulfilled. Fairbairn wrote the following words on the subject:
The child not only internalizes his bad objects because they force themselves upon him and he seeks to control them, but also, and above all, because he needs them. If a child’s parents are bad objects, he cannot reject them, even if they do not force themselves upon him; for he cannot do without them. Even if they neglect him, he cannot reject them; for, if they neglect him, his need for them is increased.
[...]
It is above all the need of the child for his parents, however bad they may appear to him, that compels him to internalize bad objects; and it is because this need remains attached to them in the unconscious that he cannot bring himself to part with them. It is also his need for them that confers upon them their actual power over him. Pages 67-70 of Psychoanalytic Studies of the Personality (The Repression and the Return of Bad Objects (with special reference to the War Neuroses) (1943))

Releasing and avoiding emotions

In the meantime, Regina has real feelings, anger, resentment, etc. she feels towards Cora but cannot express. Whenever Cora does something "bad" that Regina cannot internalize as her fault, she triggers the release of Regina's bad objects. This is an insanely stressful situation for Regina who simply cannot deal with it.
So, Regina finds a proxy for Cora to deal with the anxiety over the return of her repressed objects. Blaming Snow is Regina's way of coping with the stress of her mother's behavior pushing her towards recognizing the abuse. With a proxy, Regina is free to rage and release all of her feelings without the risk of losing her mother's love hanging over her head. In other words, it is now safe for her to express her feelings. Fairbairn believed a good case of transference (the one existing between therapist and patient) can lead to the safe release of repressed object otherwise it would lead to the repression being intensified and people to double down on their unhealthy coping mechanism and never address the root of their issues.
It is true that it is from his symptoms that he consciously desires to be relieved, and that a considerable proportion of psychopathological symptoms consist essentially in defences against a ‘return of the repressed’ (i.e. a return of repressed objects). Nevertheless, it is usually when his defences are wearing thin and are proving inadequate to safeguard him against anxiety over a threatened release of repressed objects that he is driven to seek analytical aid. From the patient’s point of view, accordingly, the effect of analytical treatment is to promote the very situation from which he seeks to escape. Hence the phenomenon of the transference neurosis, which involves in part a defence against, and in part a reaction to, a release of repressed bad objects. The release of such objects obtained in analytical treatment differs, however, from a spontaneous release of such objects in that it has a therapeutic aim—and ultimately a therapeutic effect in virtue of the fact that it is a release controlled by the analyst and safeguarded by the security imparted by the transference situation Page 75 of Psychoanalytic Studies of the Personality (The Repression and the Return of Bad Objects (with special reference to the War Neuroses) (1943))
Not completely divorced from Cora's abuse, Regina's second motivation to blame Snow is avoiding guilt and the confirmation of her toxic beliefs. We've established earlier Cora's rejection of Regina's love as a child lowered her self esteem. It also created the belief expressing her love was bad.
Regressive reinstatement of the early oral attitude would appear to be most readily brought about by a situation of emotional frustration in which the child comes to feel (a) that he is not really loved for himself as a person by his mother, and (b) that his own love for his mother is not really valued and accepted by her. This is a highly traumatic situation giving rise to a further situation characterized as follows: (a) The child comes to regard his mother as a bad object in so far as she does not seem to love him. (b) The child comes to regard outward expressions of his own love as bad, with the result that, in an attempt to keep his love as good as possible, he tends to retain his love inside himself. (c) The child comes to feel that love relationships with external objects in general are bad, or at least precarious. Page 17-18 of Psychoanalytic Studies of the Personality (Schizoid Factors in the Personality (1940))
When Daniel dies after she expressed her love for him it only works to confirm what she already fears to be true: her love is destructive. However, if Snow is responsible then it isn't Regina's love that killed Daniel.
Looking back at the scene immediately after, Regina is very withdrawn and resigned to her fate because even if she is angry, even if she is hurt, Cora can't blamed so her default proxy is herself. Regina essentially considers this marriage as punishment for her love causing Daniel's demise. So, she bottles all that hurt and simply does as she's told. Enters Snow with the truth: she broke her confidence and told Cora about Daniel. Not a reprehensible act by any means, it was a simple mistake made by a child but that is not how Regina sees it. To her, it's a breach of trust. Look at this quote in 1x21:
"She ripped his heart out because of you"
The phrasing makes it seem like Snow forced Cora's hand when all she did was give her an information. Cora did not have to kill Daniel, Snow did not tell her to kill Daniel but in Regina's mind, giving Cora that information was akin to giving her the order. Here's another way to see it: Cora's hand needed to be directed and Snow gave her a clear target. Thus, Regina transfers all of the resentment she feels towards Cora onto Snow. Someone who is both safer to be angry at, vulnerable to attack but also blameable. Nothing in Regina's psyche is barring her from blaming Snow. She is not attached to her in a way that warps her entire thought process. The added bonus is getting rid of the guilt and the feeling her love is destructive.
Snow provides Regina with an easy way out. She doesn't have to face Cora's abuse and her love is not what killed Daniel.
If Snow had kept Regina's secret, anyone else may have been blamed. Her father, the horse, the king. Whoever allowed her to rid herself of her guilt. As a matter of fact, Snow was not the first, nor was she the last proxy for Cora. Daniel himself was one albeit on a smaller scale. In 1x18 when Regina is angry at Cora for her criticism, she snaps at Daniel, transferring her anger at Cora's behavior onto him. Then in 4x20, when Regina learns of Cora's treachery with Nottingham, she tortures him. Cora finds out and subsequently lets him go, what is Regina's response?
"Why did you let him go? Don't you want someone else to suffer for what you did? As usual..."
This shows on some level, she is aware of what she is doing. She knows she is punishing other people for the things Cora does. Which goes to show this can't absolve her of wrongdoing. It may explain her behavior but it does not justify or excuse it. Regina is not the only character to be mistreated, she didn't have to turn into this.
In conclusion, Regina blaming Snow is not a random decision. It is a choice perfectly showcasing the effects of Cora's abuse on Regina's psyche and a rather realistic depiction of the negative effects of childhood abuse. Got a little carried away but I hope you found something of value in this post. Looking forward to your thoughts.

The brillant writing of 2x02

Here's a bonus I found very interesting:
In 2x02, Regina gets rid of Cora by pushing her through a mirror. It happens after their exchange where Cora is giving Regina instructions. Cora takes them in front of the mirror to look at their reflections after expressing disappointment at the gift.
"A looking glass. Not nearly as personal."
Those are her exact words. I want to direct your attention to this part of Will I Ever Be Good Enough?:
Sadly, due to the detrimental effects of these ten stingers, when the daughter of a narcissistic mother looks for her own image in the mirror, she has trouble seeing herself. Instead, her sense of self is merely a reflection of how her mother sees her, which is too often cast in a negative light. Page 45 of Will I Ever Be Good Enough?
This section is part of the chapter titled The Empty Mirror, My Mother and Me. The choice of a mirror here can be interpreted as a way to highlight how much of Regina's self image is tied to her mother. People can't gift her a portrait as Cora wanted because she can't stand on her own. Regina never once gets to look at her reflection when she's by herself. When she does look into the mirror it is at Cora's urging with her mother by her side holding her close, wearing the dress her mother chose, about to marry the man her mother wanted. Where does Cora end and where does Regina begin? No one knows. It's once again all about Cora. The reflection starring back at her is exactly how Cora views her. An extension to herself. And when she gets rid of Cora, the mirror shatters, symbolizing both the ruins of that relationship but also the fact that without her mother, Regina is empty. There is nothing but void starring back at her now. Regina doesn't know who she is without Cora telling her so she does not have a reflection standing alone. There is no clear picture in her mind of who she is. That's exactly how she ends up becoming Cora 2.0. It's all she knows how to be, who she was groomed to become. The Evil Queen has a reflection because at this point, Regina has morphed into Cora 2.0, someone she can see clearly.

2024.04.26 15:57 Cleanmadunt101 A Collaborative Story crafted by Gemini Ai and Myself [Test Project]

I was experimenting Gemini Ai and was comparing it's story crafting skills with Chat GPT, The story being crafted has impressed me!
San Murphy Island, once a paradise, crackled with a tension thicker than the smog billowing from Titan LTD's refineries. Brandon Murphy, a man with a shark's grin and eyes like cold steel, finalized the merger with his equally ruthless counterpart, Tyler Colley of Eagle Ltd. Their combined entity, Titan-Eagle, was a financial leviathan, fueled not by oil, but by fear. Murphy and Colley, the island's prodigal sons turned tyrants, had used a potent cocktail of intimidation and backroom deals to seize control. They choked the government, leaving it a husk, while their companies leeched the island's resources dry. Their ambitions didn't stop there. They dreamt of becoming the world's first trillionaire duo, and San Murphy was just their launchpad. One seemingly innocuous night, as Murphy and Colley celebrated their billion-dollar empire in a decadent penthouse, alarms blared. Elite soldiers, clad in sleek black armor, materialized on the balcony. They were the Eradicators, a legendary paramilitary force whispered about only in hushed tones. "We are the Eradicators," their leader, a woman with a voice like honed steel, declared. "San Murphy's corruption has festered long enough. Titan-Eagle will fall, even if it means bringing the island down with it." Murphy and Colley scoffed. Their private security force, the Iron Fists, were renowned for their brutality.
But the Eradicators moved with an inhuman grace, their weapons spitting blue fire that melted iron like butter. The Iron Fists crumpled. The fight spilled out onto the smog-choked streets. The Eradicators, unlike any force San Murphy had faced, fought with a cold fury. They targeted Titan-Eagle infrastructure with laser-like precision, crippling refineries and communication networks. The island plunged into chaos. The plot twist? The Eradicators weren't some outside force. They were San Murphy's own people. The islanders, pushed to the brink by Titan-Eagle's greed, had formed a resistance in the island's forgotten corners. They'd trained in secret, their leader the once- idealistic government official Sylvia Vance, the woman with the steely voice. Sylvia knew destroying Titan-Eagle could destroy San Murphy, but she also knew the island couldn't survive under their yoke. It was a desperate gamble, a fight for their very future. News of the rebellion spread like wildfire. The island, once cowed, erupted. Workers in Titan-Eagle refineries turned on their overseers. The fight became a desperate, bloody ballet between the corrupt and the desperate. Murphy and Colley, cornered in their crumbling penthouse, realized their house of cards was collapsing. The story of San Murphy became a global spectacle. A cautionary tale of unchecked greed and the desperate lengths people would go to for freedom. The outcome? That remained to be seen. Would the Eradicators succeed in their scorched-earth plan, or would Murphy and Colley find a way to cling to power? The fate of San Murphy, and perhaps Titan-Eagle's global ambitions, hung in the balance. The air above San Murphy Island shimmered with heat as Titan LTD's refineries, repurposed into makeshift fortresses, hammered the city with missile fire. Murphy, eyes wild with paranoia, barked orders from his fortified penthouse, a grotesque emperor surveying his burning kingdom. Across the battle lines, Sylvia, her face grim with resolve, directed the Eradicators' counter-offensive. They fought with guerilla tactics, exploiting the island's intricate network of tunnels and abandoned mines. It was a brutal dance of hit-and-run attacks punctuated by deafening artillery exchanges. News of the escalating conflict sent shockwaves across the globe. Titan LTD, desperate to crush the uprising, had begun an all-out assault. Billions flowed into a war chest, purchasing advanced weaponry - tanks that rumbled through the streets like mechanical leviathans, and missiles that carved fiery streaks across the twilight sky.
Even with the Eradicators' ferocity, San Murphy's infrastructure crumbled. Hospitals became smoldering ruins, schools transformed into makeshift bunkers. The once vibrant island was a ravaged wasteland, the stench of burning oil and death hanging heavy in the air. Seeing the potential for global chaos, a consortium of world governments formed the Phoenix Initiative. Their goal: contain the conflict before it spilled outwards. But the situation was a tangled web of alliances of convenience. Some nations saw the collapsing San Murphy as an opportunity to snatch resources, backing Titan with advanced weaponry in exchange for future favors. Others, fearing the domino effect of global war, secretly funneled supplies to the Eradicators, hoping to see Titan crippled. The island became a proxy battlefield, a festering wound draining the world's resources. The line between aid and intervention blurred. News reports, riddled with propaganda, showed scenes of burning cities and civilians caught in the crossfire. Public outrage mounted, and whispers of full-scale war began swirling in diplomatic circles. The once contained conflict flared outwards like a wildfire in Damascus, Syria. A skirmish between rival factions escalated into a bloody confrontation, drawing in regional powers with long-standing grievances. The delicate balance of the Phoenix Initiative teetered on the brink of collapse. San Murphy was on the precipice of annihilation. Titan LTD's scorched-earth policy ensured a pyric victory, if victory it could be called. The island, once a gem in the Pacific, was a ravaged husk, its people scattered like refugees on the winds of war. The Eradicators, decimated but not broken, vowed revenge. Their fight, born of desperation, had ignited a global powder keg, and the world now teetered at the brink of another devastating war. The consequences of unchecked greed, once confined to a single island, now loomed large, threatening to engulf the world in flames.
News of the escalating conflict reached Brandon Murphy like a thunderclap. The stress, the paranoia, and the ever-mounting death toll took their toll. A massive stroke crippled him, leaving him a husk of his former self, confined to a sterile, military-grade hospital heavily guarded by his remaining Iron Fists. With Murphy incapacitated, the power dynamic in Titan Ltd. shifted dramatically. Tyler Colley, the once co-equal partner, saw this as an opportunity. Gone were the days of shared ambition; Colley craved absolute control. He unleashed the full might of Titan's war machine. Half of the nation became a desolate wasteland under Colley's iron fist. Titan deployed experimental defoliants, turning once-lush forests into barren plains, further hindering the Eradicators' guerrilla tactics. However, the tide was slowly turning. Thanks to public outrage, donations for the Eradicators poured in from across the globe. Individuals, NGOs, and even sympathetic governments funneled resources, allowing them to acquire better weapons and training. The insurgency, once a ragtag group of freedom fighters, became a formidable force, mirroring Titan's firepower.
But amidst the chaos, a new player emerged from the shadows – Phoenix Global Incorporated (PGI), a previously unknown multinational corporation. PGI, veiled in secrecy, had been subtly fueling the conflict from the beginning. They supplied weapons to both sides – advanced drones for the Eradicators and cutting-edge cyberwarfare tools for Titan. Their motive? To prolong the war, weaken both sides, and swoop in to purchase San Murphy's ravaged resources for pennies on the dollar. PGI's involvement became a terrifying new variable. The conflict morphed from a simple struggle for power into a multi-layered game of manipulation. The world watched in horror as the fighting intensified. San Murphy Island, once a beacon of prosperity, became a tragic symbol of humanity's greed and the devastating consequences of unchecked corporate power. Within Titan Ltd., whispers about Colley's erratic behavior and his dealings with PGI began to reach the ears of lower-ranking executives. A faction, led by a disillusioned ex-military officer named Sarah Khan, began plotting a counter-coup. They saw Colley's alliance with PGI as the final betrayal of San Murphy. Their plan: use Colley's dependence on PGI's technology to cripple their operations, forcing him to negotiate or face annihilation. On the other side, the Eradicators, now aware of PGI's double-dealing, were faced with a difficult decision. They could continue fighting Titan and PGI simultaneously, a strategy that would likely lead to further devastation, or they could make a risky gamble. They could reach out to Sarah Khan's faction within Titan, forging an uneasy alliance to take down PGI and ultimately, Colley. The war in San Murphy had become a complex web of deceit and shifting allegiances.
The fate of the island, and the potential for a wider global conflict, rested on the success of these clandestine operations. Would Sarah Khan's coup succeed? Would the Eradicators trust their former oppressors? The answers would determine who would emerge victorious from this tangled mess, and whether San Murphy would be left with a chance at rebuilding, or would it become a cautionary tale for the ages. he situation on San Murphy Island was a tinderbox, ready to explode at any moment. Sarah Khan, disillusioned by Colley's descent into madness and PGI's manipulation, made a gamble. She contacted Sylvia Vance, leader of the Eradicators, proposing a temporary alliance. The reception was frosty. Years of bitter fighting had left deep scars on both sides. But the enemy of their enemy, as they say... The uneasy truce formed a bizarre spectacle. Eradicator fighters, clad in black armor, trained alongside lower-ranking Titan soldiers in mismatched fatigues. Hostility simmered just beneath the surface, punctuated by muttered insults and tense glances. However, their shared objective – toppling Colley and PGI – gave them a fragile unity. This insider knowledge proved invaluable. Sarah Khan's soldiers, veterans of Titan's brutal tactics, anticipated their every move. They countered airstrikes with ambushes, sabotaged supply lines, and exploited weaknesses in Titan's defenses. The tide began to turn. Titan, hemorrhaging billions and facing growing public dissent, found itself on the back foot. Meanwhile, the Eradicators, bolstered by Sarah Khan's intel and dwindling Titan resistance, expanded their reach. Public opinion on the island began to shift. People, weary of the war and the loss of innocent lives, started questioning the motives of all parties involved. Riots erupted, demanding an end to the bloodshed.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened. Brandon Murphy, miraculously recovering from his stroke, ripped control back from Colley. Enraged by the state of his once-mighty empire, he made a chilling decision. He ordered the deployment of a tactical nuke, a desperate gamble to reclaim dominance and eliminate all opposition. The news sent a shockwave through San Murphy and the watching world. Even PGI, their plan for a weakened takeover in shambles, recoiled at the prospect of nuclear devastation. The fragile alliance between Sarah Khan and the Eradicators was tested to its limit. Could they stop Murphy before he unleashed his ultimate weapon, or would San Murphy become a radioactive wasteland, a monument to human greed and folly? The air on San Murphy Island hung heavy with the stench of cordite and despair. The fragile truce between the Eradicators and Sarah Khan's Titan defectors had shattered. News broke – a nightmare come true. Brandon Murphy and Tyler Colley, in a final act of spiteful madness, had acquired a functional tactical nuke. In three days, they planned to reduce San Murphy to a radioactive crater, a scorched monument to their greed. Panic gripped the island. The uneasy cooperation dissolved into a desperate scramble for survival. Eradicators and Titan defectors, their recent comrades-in-arms, found themselves locked in fierce battles once more. Every corner became a potential warzone, every day a struggle for a single, dwindling resource – time. Meanwhile, amidst the chaos, a new player emerged on the scene. Phoenix Global Incorporated (PGI), their true colors now blatantly displayed, sent a contingent of heavily armed mercenaries to bolster Titan's dwindling forces. These PGI fighters were ruthless killing machines, clad in sleek black armor and wielding advanced weaponry. Their arrival tipped the scales decidedly in Titan's favor. In a brutal, calculated move, PGI launched a massive bombing raid on the Eradicators' headquarters. Sylvia Vance, the steely leader who had spearheaded the resistance, perished in the inferno along with countless others. The Eradicators, their hearts ripped raw with grief and rage, vowed vengeance. Tensions threatened to ignite a full-scale civil war that would dwarf the previous skirmishes. Sarah Khan, caught in the crossfire, watched in horror as the fragile hope for peace evaporated. She knew PGI's game – they weren't interested in victory for either Titan or the Eradicators.
They wanted to prolong the war, weaken both sides to the point of exhaustion, and then swoop in to claim the island's ravaged resources for pennies on the dollar. But despair wasn't an option. With Sylvia gone, the mantle of leadership fell to Khan. She had to find a way to dismantle the nuke, expose PGI's treachery, and forge a new alliance – this time, a true one, driven not by desperation but by a shared desire to save their shattered homeland. The clock was ticking. In just three days, San Murphy faced annihilation. Could Sarah Khan unite the fractured island and avert the coming apocalypse, or would PGI's twisted plan succeed, leaving behind a radioactive wasteland as their legacy? San Murphy Island convulsed under the relentless assault of Phoenix Industries. Their fighters, a mechanized swarm of black armor and advanced weaponry, tore through the Eradicators' defenses. Sylvia Vance, the once-formidable leader, was a smoldering memory. In her place, Sarah Khan rallied the remaining resistance, but it was a fight against the tide. Phoenix Industries weren't interested in victory for either Titan or the Eradicators; they craved obliteration. Mercy was a foreign concept as their soldiers razed entire city blocks, their advanced weaponry spitting fire on any sign of resistance. Even the wounded and surrendering were not spared, creating a spectacle of mechanized carnage. The brutality was a calculated move. PGI wanted to eliminate all opposition, leaving a power vacuum they could exploit. Sarah Khan, watching her comrades fall, understood their game. Despite the overwhelming odds, she knew surrender wasn't an option. It wouldn't save the island; it would merely expedite its takeover. But fighting Titan and PGI simultaneously was like trying to outrun a hurricane. Titan Ltd., once Sarah's enemy and now a begrudging ally, was pushed to the brink.
Their resources dwindled, their soldiers exhausted. They were a shadow of their former ruthless selves, fighting a defensive war out of sheer desperation. Meanwhile, amidst the chaos, Brandon Murphy and Tyler Colley made their final, desperate move. Their private jets gleamed on the runway, fueled and ready for escape. With a twisted satisfaction, they watched the mushroom cloud billow in the distance, a testament to their final act of destruction. The nuke, their trump card, had detonated, a radioactive shroud engulfing half the island. The world watched in horror as news of the devastation spread. Phoenix Industries, basking in the initial chaos, launched a surprise offensive against Titan Ltd. They had expected a weakened force, easy prey. But they underestimated the human spirit. Titan's soldiers, fueled by a righteous fury, fought with renewed vigor. They knew the cost of defeat; they knew PGI wouldn't stop with San Murphy. The battle became a desperate fight for survival, not just for the island, but for the world. The island was now a war-torn wasteland, the air thick with radioactive dust and the stench of death. Yet, amidst the ruins, a flicker of defiance remained. A ragtag force – remnants of Titan, the few surviving Eradicators, and civilians armed with whatever they could find – rose to meet PGI's onslaught. They were led by a young woman, hardened by loss but fueled by a burning desire for justice – Sarah Khan's second in command, a fiery lieutenant named Maya. The war for San Murphy entered a new phase. The battleground, once a playground for the wealthy, was now a graveyard. The fight, once a struggle for power, was now a desperate stand against the embodiment of corporate greed.
The outcome was uncertain. The world watched with bated breath, wondering if San Murphy, the island that had risen from paradise to hell, could ever find its way back to the light. Maya, fueled by Sarah Khan's memory and the island's desperate plight, led the resistance with the ferocity of a cornered tigress. But the fight was a daily bloodbath. PGI's advanced weaponry cut through their hastily formed ranks like a scythe. Exhaustion gnawed at them, the radioactive fallout a spectral reaper claiming lives with unseen lungsnumbing kisses. Meanwhile, amidst the chaos, karma began its slow, agonizing dance with Brandon Murphy. His private jet, caught in the fringe of the nuclear blast, sputtered and coughed, its navigation systems failing. Panic choked him as he realized his escape plan – his final act of spite – had backfired spectacularly. He was trapped, hurtling towards the radioactive heart of the island he'd destroyed. News of the nuclear detonation and PGI's involvement sent shockwaves across the globe. World leaders scrambled, sanctions were imposed, but the international community's outrage was a powerless scream against a corporation with its tendrils wrapped tightly around the world's financial arteries. The battle for San Murphy devolved into a grotesque dance of death. Buildings crumbled under relentless bombardment, the once vibrant landscape turned into a desolate moonscape.
Titan's CEO, Tyler Colley, caught in a PGI crossfire intended for Maya, met a gruesome end. His death, however, went unnoticed amidst the deafening cacophony of war. Brandon Murphy's jet, its engines sputtering their final breaths, slammed into the irradiated heart of the island. His last moments were a horrifying epiphany - a suffocating tomb of his own making. His death, unrecorded and unnoticed, was a cruel twist of fate, a man consumed by greed, forgotten by the very chaos he'd unleashed. Maya, her face streaked with ash and tears, led the final charge against PGI's remaining force. It was a suicidal act, but they fought with a desperate ferocity, a final defiant roar against the corporate monster that had devoured their island. The world watched in stunned silence as satellite images showed San Murphy engulfed in a radioactive cloud. Communication with the island ceased. News outlets ran a constant barrage of headlines: "San Murphy Island: Devastation Confirmed," "Phoenix Industries: Corporate Greed Gone Nuclear," "Casualty Estimates Unknown." The truth was far worse. San Murphy Island, once a beacon of prosperity, was a radioactive tomb. Maya and the remaining fighters perished alongside their foes, casualties of a war fueled by greed and despair. The island, a cautionary tale etched in radioactive fire, became a ghost in the Pacific, a symbol of man's destructive capacity and a stark reminder of the price of unchecked ambition. The world mourned a paradise lost, a vibrant island reduced to a silent, radioactive wasteland. Maya's lifeless hand clutched a dog tag, a single word etched on it: "Hope." The wind, carrying whispers of a forgotten dream, rustled the dead palm trees.}

About Mortain
Mortain sits in a shallow valley – where the US rallied against German troops amid Operation Lüttich. The battle took place in August 1944, in Normandy, France.
Units from the 30th Division, including the 2nd Battalion, 120th Infantry, and two tank destroyer platoons, were dispatched to relieve the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry. Their directive was to defend the town of Mortain, strategically utilising Hill 314 (also known as MontJoie) as a tactical defensive and overlook position. During Operation Lüttich the town was destroyed, left in ruins with only a few buildings standing. The destroyed version of the town will be featured in the map.
Offering a plethora of notable locations – both historical and natural – Mortain features themes of contrasting areas throughout. Rock formations permeate the map alongside hilly areas of countryside and farmland.

Mortain - New Map

Mortain - Environment Art
It brings the team great pleasure to finally release Update 15 and our new map, Mortain.
Since joining the project, the team at Expression Games have worked with our partners to deliver a map that offers a new and exciting world to experience in Hell Let Loose, while honouring the legacy that Black Matter had left for us.
Being our first map release, we wanted to gather feedback from the community early on, and as previously mentioned in other briefings, we cannot thank you all enough for supporting the PTEs that helped shape this map. Hell Let Loose has one of the most dedicated fanbases within online gaming, and although there have been some challenges bringing it to the standard previous Normandy maps have set, you have been instrumental towards its development and have made us accountable in creating quality gameplay and visuals.
Since the last PTE, the Environment Art team have been focused on fixing as many bugs and visual issues as possible for release, as well as incorporating some new dressing and polish. We have also supported Technical Art in producing some crucial optimisations, within Mortain and in particular textures across the game. We hope that these efforts mean you’ll enjoy the varied terrain and vast forestry of Mortain at its best performance yet.
Link:eloper briefing from the PTE, which has additional details about Mortain Environment Art, Level Design and Front End Updates: click here
During the last Mortain PTE, there was a known issue where aiming down sights caused noticeable discrepancies between LODs across the map, with foliage, in particular, losing shadows or changing silhouette significantly. This is an issue that is present across the game, however, due to the high contrast lighting used in Mortain, this was much more noticeable to the point where this was impacting gameplay, particularly with longer-range weaponry. There was a collaboration between Code, Technical Art and Environment Art to look into this issue, and a fix was finally found and implemented by Gage Griffiths - Senior Programmer at Expression Games.
The fix consists of two console commands that are run when you join a game within Mortain. To keep performance across Xbox Series S/X, PS5 and PC consistent, different values for these commands are set based on the platform.
Firstly, the density of foliage was scaled down slightly across the map. This was fine-tuned to ensure there is not a noticeable loss in visual quality, but enough to where we retain performance. The commands and values we used for this are:
PC - foliage.DensityScale 0.8 Console - foliage.DensityScale 0.65
Secondly, Unreal Engine uses a calculation based on how much of the screen a particular asset takes up, to determine what level of detail that asset renders. When you aim down sight, a tree appears larger on the screen so the game renders a high-detail version of it, but when you stop looking down sights the tree takes up less of the screen so a lower-detail version is rendered instead.
The fix essentially alters the distance from the player where the higher detail foliage would swap to a lower detail asset. These are not exact figures, but as an example, previously a tree may have been 10,000 triangles at 10 metres away, swapping to 5000 triangles at 20 metres. This has shifted so that the tree would still be 10000 triangles at 20 metres away, with the swap to 5000 triangles happening at 40 metres, meaning a tree has to be much further away before the lower detail asset is rendered.
The exact values we set are:
PC - foliage.LODDistanceScale 2 Console - foliage.LODDistanceScale 1.3
The results of our testing are extremely positive, and we hope that if you managed to play Mortain during a previous PTE you will notice that this is a huge improvement from before.
As this is an issue that has been in the game for a long time across all maps, and the results have been promising on Mortain, I can confirm that this is a fix that we are looking to implement across the entire game, which should improve foliage LOD issues on all maps. We are also confident that this would bring huge improvements to some urban maps, in particular, Stalingrad, as a large portion of the map including buildings are technically rendered as foliage, which was a performance-saving technique used by Black Matter.
Due to this being a game-wide change, we want to ensure there is adequate testing and feedback before it’s live across all maps, so Mortain will be the only map in Update 15 to support this change. However, if feedback is positive and the consensus is that assets are ‘popping’ less for players without performance impact, this is something we are eager to implement in a future update for all maps.
We have made every effort to ensure Mortain is ready for release, but if you experience any issues while playing, please don’t hesitate to give feedback through the appropriate discord channels or social media. The team frequently reads comments and shares videos with each other, so if there are any comments or issues you have surrounding the map we want to hear them.
Lastly, I’m pleased to share and hope you enjoy some final renders of Mortain. I’m incredibly proud of what the team has produced, and I hope these images showcase a new benchmark for content in Hell Let Loose going forward.

Mortain - Technical Art

The Technical Art team have been fine-tuning the performance around the Mortain town area to accommodate the additional enterable buildings. This was a combination of LOD merging, forced distance culling and removing shadow casters on any object already in shadow. This was to ensure we retained the detail and storytelling of the interiors while reducing the cost of the extra detail.
Throughout the town, the Environment Art team made a wonderful set of modular destroyed building assets, creating a wide variety whilst keeping material and texture costs to a minimum. This, in turn, meant that we had smaller assets, however, this also increased the mesh draw calls, especially with shadow and occlusion checks. To address this as we did not want to create combined render meshes driving up the memory cost and with that texture cost, we created a series of shadow proxy assets that were lower in complexity and limited to one simple shader meaning a single shadow and occlusion call.
Many combinations of walls and buildings benefited from a Hierarchical Instanced Static Meshes pass, similar to that done with buildings in El Alamein (HISM is an instancing method that allows for better memory performance, supports LODs with good asset culling which results in better rendering performance).
On this map, we also limited the use of HLODs (Hierarchical LODs). One of the drawbacks to using HLODs extensively was increased memory overheads. This was limited to the town area and only used for medium-sized buildings.
In addition, the Technical Art team ensured that there were no unnecessary occlusion checks and unique assets, which were not adding to storytelling to save on mesh and texture memory.
To create a believable atmosphere for the destroyed part of town, we had to take into account the amount of dust that would be present in the air. However, adding a large number of dust particle effects can negatively impact performance due to overlapping translucent sprites creating overdraw.
To achieve the desired effect, we decided to create a fog to simulate the presence of thick dust around the buildings. Since using volumetric fog would cover the entire map, we opted for shader-based localized fog volumes instead. By placing a single volume over the destroyed area and adjusting the shader controls, we were able to control the fog's height, density, and colour. This approach helped to achieve the desired effect without the need for a large number of particles.
Although the fog worked well, it lacked movement. To fix this issue, we added a few variations of dust particles. However, we kept these fairly limited and added a couple of shader tricks to improve performance. The main shader trick we used was to scale the sprites down based on the player's distance from the effect, which reduced overdraw. Scaling the sprites down to nothing eliminated any render cost.
We also had to be mindful of when the player walks through the dust particles. Lots of large translucent sprites filling the screen could significantly impact performance. To tackle this problem, we used a similar method as the distance from the player. Only in this instance, we faded the alpha and scaled the particles as you moved through them, reducing the chance of frame drops. Having long sightlines with lots of particles could be costly. However, a combination of optimized VFX with a few shader tricks allowed us to create an area that looked heavy in dust with minimal impact on performance.

Sainte-Marie-du-Mont - Map Updates

To coincide with the release of a Control Skirmish mode for Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, we looked into issues commonly brought up about the map as a whole across various community forums. Keeping in mind that the map is a fan favourite we chose to focus solely on the most impactful changes, those being to address the lack of enterable areas within the town and the inaccessible Brécourt Manor courtyard.
When tackling the updates to the town centre in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, we started by focusing internal playtests on just that space. Utilising feedback from these playtests, along with community sentiment derived from various social media platforms, we were able to help find and improve the key problems on just those areas of the map.
Our biggest focus was on increasing the overall playable space around the town, helping to provide more routes into and out of the capture point. This increase in playable space also lends itself to creating more viable outpost/garrison placement options, and more flanking opportunities for attackers and defenders alike. Within these newly opened spaces, additional enterable buildings were placed to further increase the opportunities for attackers and defenders to seize the capture area around the church.

Sainte-Marie-du-Mont Updates - Before and after, newly opened up spaces

The above GIF showcases the reduction in blocking volumes throughout the town centre, in turn showing the extent of the newly opened space. These changes should not only improve navigation throughout the town but also help drastically reduce instances of being stopped from entering an area because of an invisible wall.
The following images show before and after shots of the four main quadrants of the town, North West, North East, South East and South West. The areas captured highlight the largest scale changes to the playable space, with new routes that lead directly into the town.

Sainte-Marie-du-Mont - Control Skirmish

The set-up for this Control Skirmish mode is focused around the Cattlesheds capture point from Warfare and Offensive, allowing us to capture a nice balance of spaces that should make both infantry and vehicle combat intense.
The bocages surrounding the Cattlesheds provide cover and routes into the capture point and the space within it provides engineers ample opportunity to bolster your team’s defences.
For tanks, the nearby open fields afford the space to bombard the opposition from a distance, or to act as support for the infantry pushing the objective.

Oak Leaf [Paid]

Also known as Eichenlaubmuster, this was one of the many types of camouflage patterns used by several divisions within the German forces. Often worn in the autumn, it is unique with its distinct colourisation.
For players, wishing to combine this uniform and match it with headwear of the same pattern, we would recommend using the Leopard Covered M42 helmet, already available, in-game.

2024.04.24 00:26 arthorpendragon what non-humans do you have in your system?

we were watching an online chat from power to the plurals and one of the people said that 50% of systems were non-human headmates, which obviously also includes animals, plants, inanimate objects etc. we suspected that on this sub but havent seen alot of discussion or even mention of non-human headmates on the plural sub. do the people here think that comments about non-human headmates should be reserved for the otherkin and alterhuman subs? or that its not discussed because its personal or some other reason? why so little mention of non-human headmates? it took us a long time for us to realise and indentify that we had non-human headmates after joining the plural sub. which we assumed would be like a foundational concept in plurality.
if people are interested in sharing identities/labels/theriotypes/kin of their non-human headmates we would love to see some. we the thunder cloud are; peregrine falcon, friesian cow, fire dragon/seraphim, void humanoid. we are also gods and archangels. we mostly get along.

2024.04.22 02:16 wicked__hunter Proxy improper file path

Hello!
I’m struggling with a very large edit. I have about 18tb of 6k footage, and premiere was struggling to playback at all. I created proxies for all the Footage and it does playback with proxies on. However, premiere is pointing to the wrong proxies very often. I have to unattach my proxies then relink, but when I do I have to go through each clip individually since if I batch link it reverts to the improper proxy (always goes to the first folder in my proxy folder, not the one containing the first proxy clip I point out).
Do I have to manually tell premiere where each proxy is? Previously I had to relink each time I close and open premiere, so I have stopped quitting the program but nervous to leave my hard drives plugged into a laptop that long.
My research on this subreddit as well as creative cow has shown me that this could be because the cinematographer had the file names reset each time he swapped mags. I never rename clips after I pull them from a card, but it seems like premiere is choosing the first file with the same name in the proxy folder, regardless of sub folder. Here is an example:
Correct file path: workdrive/footage/proxies/Day6/NINJAV_s001_t001
Premiere’s relink path: workdrive/footage/proxies/Day1/NINJAV_s001_t001
Right now I’m just going through my 350+ clips and delinking each one individually with the proxy, but I seriously can’t do that everyday when I get home from work, I won’t ever sleep.
Any suggestions? My current plan is to get every clip pointed in the right place then offline the original footage so I can proxy edit. I have way too many drives involved so if I could consolidate into just one drive with my project file, sound and proxies that would be the ideal way to edit. Quite stressed since I only have a single month to complete this… anything would help!
System specs: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020) Processor:2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 Memory:16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X
Software Specs: I've tried premiere pro 22.6.4, 23.5, and 24.3 same issue on each
Footage specs: Codec according to finder:Timecode, Apple ProRes RAW, Linear PCM (shot on Panasonic LUMIX G DC-GH6, received on a solid state hard drive) 5728 × 3024

Under The Radar

Republicans continue to stumble their way through responding to the Arizona Supreme Court decision to reinstate a near-total ban on abortion from 1864. Fox News’s resident mega-chud Sean Hannity on Wednesday called on Arizona Democrats to simply “get rid of” the law, despite the fact that Copper State Democrats did try to do that and were blocked by Republican lawmakers. The Biden campaign is not wasting time, and on Thursday launched a seven-figure advertising buy in Arizona focused on abortion. National Democratic officials have a clear plan of attack to attach all abortion talking points to disgraced former president Donald Trump, and lay responsibility for our current dystopia at his feet.
Trump, as we know, installed three justices that helped form the conservative Supreme Court court majority that overturned Roe vs. Wade in June 2022. Abortion bans are a massive political liability for Republicans, a fact that hasn’t deterred them from continuing to pursue as many such bans as possible at all levels of government. But there isn’t universal consensus within the Biden campaign on focusing so heavily on abortion. Some within the president’s reelection campaign worry that the singular focus could lead to neglecting other issues that are hurting the president’s approval including inflation, immigration, and student loan debt. Among Democratic voters, Biden’s primary issue continues to be his handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

What Else?

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressed a joint session of Congress on Thursday, and urged lawmakers not to doubt the “indispensable” role of the United States in world affairs, and warned that Ukraine could “collapse” without American support.
Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, the longest-serving member of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, announced on Thursday that she will not run for reelection next spring, throwing the hard-won 4-3 liberal majority on the court back into play for conservatives.
Former football star and all-around terrible guy O.J. Simpson has died at the age of 76. Simpson was acquitted of murdering his former wife Nicole Brown in 1995 but later found responsible for her death in a civil lawsuit. He also served nine years in Nevada prison after being convicted in 2008 on twelve counts of armed robbery and kidnapping two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint.
Ippei Mizuhara, the longtime interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, was charged on Thursday with bank fraud for stealing $16 million from the Dodgers to pay off his gambling debts. Misuhara faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
Before he died in prison, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny wrote a memoir chronicling his life, his career, and subsequent assassination attempts. It will be published this fall.
Bird flu has been detected in dairy cow herds in eight states, but the disease is not presenting as a respiratory infection as it usually does in other mammals. High concentration of the virus is being found in the milk supply of infected cows.
The Tennessee House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday that would make it illegal to marry your first cousin, but not without a fight from some Republicans. A tough setback for all of our brave soldiers on the front lines of Marrying Your First Cousin.
Guy who constantly complains about how Democrats have killed personal “responsibility” Lt. Gov Mark Robinson (R-NC) failed to file his federal income taxes for five consecutive years between 1998-2003.
Consumer Reports is calling for Lunchables to be removed from school cafeterias across the country after concerning levels of lead (!) and sodium (okay that one we could have guessed) and other potentially-harmful chemicals were found in their products. A petition lobbying the USDA to remove the Kraft Heinz products from the National School Lunch Program has over 14,000 signatures. A spokeswoman for Kraft Heinz told the Washington Post: “All our foods meet strict safety standards that we happily feed to our own families.”

2024.04.07 09:40 IONTOP I don't know if this is goodbye, but it's definitely a "break"

Ugh... This is the post I have known would never happen, yet knew would...
I think I've aged out of the industry. I've been invited to SO many face-to-face interviews, and had GOOD interviews. Haven't gotten a callback. For 3 months. With 20 years experience. Indeed? My "last 3 jobs" show that I'm over 30. I've edited my resume to kind of hide that fact, and I get face to face interviews. Craigslist? Get beat out by someone else. Follow up calls, follow up "showing ups" (it's a restaurant, it's not a government facility)
I'm moving cross country in 3 weeks, I don't know if it's to "start over" or to "find another industry".
Just sucks. I love the industry. But I can't even get an hourly non-serving/bartending job because they think that I'll find a job before I'm out of training and they're just wasting their money on onboarding me because I'm "overqualified". (And I'm NOT trying to overinflate it, it's what I've been told through proxy)
If this IS it?
It's been a fucking hell of a run. Keep caring enough to be on this sub to give advice to newbies, rather than to just bitch about $0 tips.
Ask your chef if Short Ribs come from Short Cows... Just once... For me.

2024.03.29 17:12 NewTorai GUESS WHO?

GUESS WHO?
Anna Nicole Smith, the miss may
who knocks us out in those sexy jeans ads, takes another trophy
Playmate of the Year!
text by REG POTTERTON

Anna Nicole Smith
YOU'VE SEEN the Guess Jeans ads. The ultimate blonde, fighting her way out of tight dresses, straps falling off her shoulders, eyes smoldering into the camera. She reminded me of someone-several someones-when I first saw the pictures.
A hint of Marilyn Monroe and the great Dane, Anita Ekberg, yes, but someone else, too, a blonde version of Jane Russell, perhaps.
She has that attitude: Don't mess with me, mister, not if you know what's good for you. The challenge when she leans against a sun-bleached pole, cigarette coolly poised between long fingers. That look on her face: Does it say drop dead? Get over here, big boy? Or both?

Anna Nicole Smith
There was no clue to the answers when i called this familiar stranger to set up an interview. She was staying at an old-fashioned five-star hotel on Chicago's Gold Coast. That's all I knew-that, and the fact that my call woke her up.
"What time is it?" Her voice was soft, small, sleepy.
"Just after noon."
"Call me at two, please."
By four in the afternoon I was knocking on the door of room 444, counting the plates piled outside on a room-service tray. Seven, all empty.
This was a hungry woman. And there she was, on the threshold of a darkened room, blinds drawn, one shaded lamp on a table, TV blurting and squelching in the background. Happy Days. The Fonz and the gang, in that diner where they hang out.

Anna Nicole Smith
She was maybe an inch under six feet. Hair pulled back in a ponytail. Baggy top. Tight jeans.
Cute socks, flat shoes. The voice was still soft. "Please don't look at my hair. It's got plastic in it. Plastic snow. For the movie. They haven't let me wash it for the past three days."
That was my first glimpse of Anna Nicole Smith, the Guess Jeans girl, PLAYBOY's Playmate of the Year.
I knew PLAYBOY put her on the cover in March 1992 and then chose her for Playmate two months later, when she went by her original name, Vickie Smith.
But the rest was unknown terri-tory. Who was she? Where did she come from? How did she get here from there? When did it all start?

Anna Nicole Smith
She sat on the side of the table with the lamp, I sat on the other, taking notes. Four o'clock in the afternoon and the bed wasn't made. It looked as though wild animals had been mangling the sheets and blankets. What kind of hotel was this?
"Lousy," said Anna. "I've spoken to everyone from the maid up to the manager, trying to get the TV fixed. My bodyguard next door gets full cable service, I get the networks. I've given up asking. They don't listen."
What's the point of having a bodyguard, I thought, if you can't use him to brutalize hotel people who fall down on the job?
But I said nothing. Anna did all the talking. Never raised her voice, never displayed outrage or anger, none of that "don't they know who I am" business. While she talked, she chewed vitamin C tablets, kept an ear and sometimes an eye on Happy Days, laughing at the jokes, and called me sir.
There wasn't a lot of Texas left in her accent, but you could tell it was there, hiding, perhaps, until she was back with friends and family.
Texas is where she was born 25 years ago and lived most of her life, some of it in and around Houston, much of it in a small town about 70 miles south of Dal-las. From the age of 15 to 19 she was breakfast cook at the Chicken House. "Its real name was Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken," she said, "but we all called it plain old Chicken House. I did eggs. I was real good with eggs. And okra.
Mashed potatoes. Home-fried chicken. All that good stuff you can't get in these fancy hotels."
"What was that," I asked, "a five-day week?™
"Mostly seven," she said
Anna worked with a girlfriend.

Anna Nicole Smith
They gave themselves nick-names. Anna was Cricket. "I was always jumping around." The two girls married two brothers, one of whom, Anna's husband, worked at the Chicken House.
He'd been her boyfriend in high school. She was 17 when they married, he was 16. Both girls had babies a month apart, both got divorced.
Anna took her son, Daniel, Houston and moved in with her mother, a police officer. They didn't get along, so Anna and Daniel found a place of their own, a tiny studio apartment in Hous-ton. She took two jobs, waiting tables at a Red Lobster and working as a Wal-Mart cashier.
"I knew that something would happen one day. I just had to keep trying." She went for an interview at one of Houston's biggest modeling agencies.
"They asked me for money, told me to darken my hair, lose weight, change the way I looked and go to modeling school.
I dyed my hair. Then I cried for two weeks, and they told me to forget it. You just don't have it, that's what they said." A local photographer took a few pic-tures. He sent them to PLAYBOY's Los Angeles studio. PLAYBOY flew Anna to the West Coast for tests. Impressed by the results, the magazine signed her up for the cover and as a Playmate.
"She has that look," said Gary Cole, PLAYBOY's Photography Director. "You can be sitting next to her and you think, Well, she's OK, she's not bad. But then you put her in front of a camera and, damn, it's another woman—not just another great blonde but someone ex-traordinary. That's what we saw." Paul Marciano, the man who invented Guess Jeans, saw the same thing when he picked up the March and May 1992 issues of PLAYBOY.
"I was totally mesmerized by that March cover," he said. "Her face drove me crazy." He looked inside the issue for more pictures but found none. When Anna's Playmate pictorial came out in May he called Marilyn Grabowski, PLAYBOY's West Coast Photography Edi-tor. He had two questions: Who was she?
Where could he find her?
"I met Paul in Houston," Anna said.

Anna Nicole Smith
"He was shooting a new series of Guess ads in San Antonio and he invited me down to watch them work. No promises, he said, and that was the deal. After I'd been in San Antonio for a couple of hours he told them to put some makeup on me, just for a little test. Then they looked at the pictures and kept shooting me for the next two days. That's how I got to sign up with Guess Jeans for three years."
Paul Marciano, who called me after I'd seen Anna, confirmed the essentials.
"We went to San Antonio to shoot a catalog of clothing for babies and kids," he said. "When I met her, I wasn't sure how it would turn out. She didn't walk like a model, she didn't look like a model. But in front of a camera she was magic. It was absolutely astounding, just seeing it happen. And it wasn't easy work, either.
We were shooting in temperatures of a hundred and six. After ten minutes her makeup melted. She carried on as if she'd been doing it all her life." on as if Back at the hotel in Chicago, the Fonz was doing his Happy Days shtick. Anna giggled.
"Here's a copy of the script," she said.
Script? Right, almost forgot, the movie she had come to Chicago to make. I looked at the cover. The Hudsucker Proxy.
An industrial fantasy, it said on the bot-tom. A film by Joel and Ethan Coen. The Coen brothers! The guys who made Blood Simple. Raising Arizona. Barton Fink.
Miller's Crossing. Cinematic milestones, in my humble view.
"It's got Paul Newman and Tim Rob-bins in it," said Anna. "I play the part of Tim's girlfriend, then I dump him for an elevator man. It's going to be one funny movie. I was laughing so hard watching Tim the other day, they had to take my mike off."
I was thinking: From Red Lobster and Wal-Mart to the Coen boys, Newman and Robbins. I thought life didn't write that kind of story anymore.

Anna Nicole Smith
"What's next, Anna?"
"I'm just waiting for things to slow down," she said.
"It's all gone so fast.
We've been shooting from six at night
until four in the morning. Same again tonight."
Ah, that explains her reaction to my wake-up call at noon. Sorry, Anna.
"I'd give a lot for a little more sleep.
Next week we move to North Carolina and start shooting again."
She has three months of solid bookings after she finishes Hudsucker. Modeling jobs, guest appearances, making movies. In between, she flies home to be with seven-year-old Daniel, or takes him with her when she's working close to home. She'll be in Cannes for the 1993 International Film Festival. Later she wants to rent an apartment in New York City for a year and get serious about acting lessons.
"I'm young and I'm blonde and I'm Texan," she said, "but I'm a serious per-son. I take work seriously and 1 take Daniel seriously, even though he drives me nuts when he beats me at Nintendo.
Which he does all the time. He just laughs-he's too quick for me."
She admits it, she doesn't take kindly to losing. "Watch out if you play Monopoly with me. You send me to jail and I will kick that whole game over." She could do it, too. The woman has some powerful legs. They come from years of hard work.
She's reading more scripts and has found at least one she likes. Her ambition is to be an actress in the Monroe tra-dition: sexy, cool and funny. "I can't explain it because I don't understand it, but I've always felt this strong connection to Marilyn Monroe, always. She's who I turn to when I get upset. I play her songs, look at her pictures, watch her movies. I've got them all except River of No Return. I sure wish I could find that one."
As for actors, the one she said had the most lethal effect on her was Brad Pitt in Thelma & Louise. "The strange thing is, he's not even my type, but when I saw him in that sex scene in the motel with Geena Davis, I couldn't take my eyes off him. I just could not sit still. He drove me totally nuts. It was all I could do to make it through the movie."
I swear she squirmed, ever so gently, at the memory.
"I don't know about that kind of stuff.
Beiron, the guy I work with in the Guess ads—he's the young one with the dark hair hanging over his face? He's so cute.
When they told me to kiss him I couldn't stop laughing, he looked so good. Those big lips of his."
That Beiron guy, I was thinking, is one lucky stiff. I bet Anna doesn't call him sir. The only people she calls sir, I bet, are the ones who remind her of customers lining up at Wal-Mart for their hearing-aid batteries.
I asked her if she ever feels like calling up the Houston modeling agency and saying, "Yoo-hoo, just thought I'd say hi.
Thanks for the career advice."

Anna Nicole Smith
She has no such need. "I don't have to be mean to anyone now. I just smile and keep right on going."
She recently bought a 15-acre ranch not far from Houston. Anna and Daniel share it with 30 guinea fowl, three turkeys, three pigs, three horses, 20 cows, a breeding bull, two parrots, a tame squirrel and six dogs.
"I'm looking for a couple of zebras and a chimp," she said. "I want one of those chimps that shake hands and like to be hugged."
Those are not the only items on her live shopping list.
"Well, I've got the ranch," she murmured in that soft voice-and she had a wicked smile as she said this-"Now all I need is a cowboy."
Bet your boots on it, she won't be calling him sir.

2024.03.29 03:17 alanbroomfield Help with Spawn/Interact with Object in Multiplayer (Replication Question)

I'm attempting to spawn a "golf ball" for a specific player.
IN THIRD-PERSON BLUEPRINT:
I'm triggering this in the third-person blueprint via keyboard input, casting to my custom controller, and calling its run-on-server custom event: "ROS_SpawnBall".
IN PLAYER CONTROLLER BLUEPRINT:
Run custom event "ROS_SpawnBall", which replicates "Run on Server" and is reliable. This event casts to the third-person blueprint (via controlled pawn) to get the world transform of a proxy in that blueprint for the spawn transform of the ball. Then I "SpawnActor" for my golf ball class, set the transform, set the owner to "self" (player controller), and set a reference to the golf ball (golf_ball_REF).
IN GOLF BALL PAWN:
I made sure that this pawn is set to replicates.
----
So far, so good. This will spawn the golf ball. But, when attempting to add a simple impulse to the ball, it doesn't work.
IN PLAYER CONTROLLER BLUEPRINT:
I use keyboard input to call a run-on-server custom event to add impulse to the recently-spawned golf ball, using the reference I set after spawning it as the input target for the custom event (in the golf ball) that adds the impulse.
HOWEVER, I just discovered that the reference is NULL. I added a long delay between spawning it and setting the reference, but still to no avail. I also set up a timer to keep checking if it's valid, but it never is. I feel I'm missing something simple here.
Help me, Obi Wan.

EDIT: I do have the ball set to "Replicates" and "Replicates Movement"; just FYI.
EDIT 2: HOLY COW. If I just change the reference to a rep notify, everything works. SMH.

2024.03.23 12:48 Leading-Status-202 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse isn't even a movie, it barely has a beginning and it doesn't have an ending (aka: Movies with paid macrotransactions)

This movie is pretty much like a pilot for a TV series. I'd say, even worse.
The first act was long... long, it just doesn't end. I was almost going to leave the cinema, because it refused to go anywhere. Then, it suddenly explodes, and lots of unconsequential things happen one after the next, just to keep the energy high. And that's the only reason this happens, because I'm sure we won't be seeing half of the things that were shown in the movie until this point in the next movie. Because it's clear that they will make multiple movies for this series.
The overal thread between all these "happenings" is the multiverse stuff, but I still find it a very weak thread. It requires you to love Marvel movies, and by proxy to accept that they have spent all their ideas and require bringing up the concept of time and multiverse travel in order to keep things interesting. If you've been around long enough in this world, you'd know by know that is the first signal that they're desperate to milk a dead cow into annihilation.
That's one thing. The other one is that you're constantly presented with an undefinite amount of plot points that never get solved. First, you're presented with The Spot, which becomes extremely powerful... and then no one speaks of him again. Then, Miguel O'Hara is another sort of Villain, and he should be the true villain of the movie... except this is also interrupted only to end the movie with the protagonist ending up in another universe where you're shown ANOTHER VILLAIN in the last 5 minutes, and the movie ends there.
This movie is constantly presenting you mcguffin after mcguffin, plot elements hanging loose just to let them... hang lose like that. The main issue with this pretend movie is that you paid a ticket to see a gigantic trailer for the next 3 movies. If you want to get the whole of your ticket's worth, you HAVE to watch the next movies as well, because the time you spent watching this one alone is pointless, worthless. The entire movie is a cliffhanger, with an incredibly furstrating and unsatisfactory edging. A movie whose only reason is to create hype for the next movies.
You didn't watch a movie, but the promise of a good movie. That doesn't sit well with me at all. It's like a videogame with stupid microtransactions: it's implicit that I won't get back my money's worth unless I spend other money just to have a remotely satisfactory experience.
Hollywood is trying to milk the audience dry, and they won't be satisfied until ALL MOVIES at the cinema are precisely like that. I think the age of endless franchises has to come to an end.
EDIT: I wish there was a way to differentiate those who agree with me vs those who disagree with me between the upvotes. It would be interesting, it's probably 50/50.
EDIT2:
Gwen is the true main character. Miles and Gwen have satisfying character arcs:
It doesn't stand up for the simple reason that Miles gets all of the main conflicts in the whole movie. All the anthagonists have beef with him, not with Gwen. On top of that, he gets the majority of screentime compared to her. So, she's a main character, but a secondary one. Miles is still the protagonist of the movie.
On top of that, as I wrote somewhere else, her conflict is barely touched upon and it's started and resolved in just two scenes. One at the very beginning, one at the very end. Her father goes from wanting to arrest her, to having changed his mind, and in the middle of that there's a whole lot of nothing if not the occasional "dad hates me". And that's that. That's the character development and your resolution. Two scenes, about 6 minutes in total? Maybe even less. Meanwhile, Miles' family relationship gets a good chunk of the focus in the first act's runtime. And what we get as a resolution is him changing his mind about keeping his identity a secret at the very end of the movie.
Moreover, These: -Gwen is in conflict with her father at the beginning, they make peace by the end. -Miles wants to keep his identity a secret, but then changes his mind by the end.
...these are Ideas, not character arcs. I could do the same with The Lord of The Rings: -Legolas hates dwarves at the beginning of the saga. He doesn't hate them anymore and befriends one by the end.
That's an idea. What matters more than anything is the execution. Rememember that spanish miss who ruined the Jesus murale of her local church? The intention was to restore a painting of the Christ, but we don't judge the outcome of her efforts by the idea, or the intention. We judge the execution, and her execution was awful.
To me, the same goes with this movie. Of course, we're talking about extremely competent people in this case.
What about the other events? One villain is presented, and then disappears mid movie. The Mumbattan moment exists pretty much in a vacuum to justify Spot getting higher powers. Then, O'Hara is revealed to be an anthagonist/villain. Chase scene. Then, another anthagonist/villain still, shown during the last 10 minutes (even less) of the movie. I find the whole thing extremely weak, you're constantly dished new stuff, moment after moment. It's filled to the brim with fan-service and references, it's chock-full of new stuff that is constantly poured in and neither the chracters nor the plot are ever fleshed out at all.
Bear this in mind: you know Gwen emotionally from the first movie, but to know her backstory you need a very quick summary of her life at the beginning of ATSV. They get rid of her backstory in about 5 minutes. Almost as an afterthought.

2024.03.21 23:42 CyberShellSecurity DNS question Cloudflare domain + cPanel account

Hi webhosting wizards,
I've been trying for a long time to get DNS to work, it is on a 'functional' state now, but I'm sure it is pretty wrong.
I purchased my domain on CF, love them. Then I purchased shared hosting on Rack-Nerd, love them x2. It seems that the hosting comes with a cpanel account + softacoulus (?), the dns records on the host only point to themselves, meaning that the shared server probably is a mail server and dns and such for everyone in the pool.
Here's how my DNS records look like on CF:
Type Name Content Proxied?
A cpanel.domain.com IP address of host proxied
A cpcalendars.domain.com IP address of host proxied
A cpcontacts.domain.com IP address of host proxied
A domain.com IP address of host proxied
A ftp.domain.com IP address of host proxied
A mail.domain.com IP address of host NOT proxied
A webdisk.domain.com IP address of host proxied
A webmail.domain.com IP address of host proxied
A whm.domain.com IP address of host proxied
CNAME www IP address of host proxied
MX domain.com internal hosting domain (this points to ip address of host) not proxied
NS domain.com hosting nameserver (RN) not proxied
NS domain.com hosting nameserver(RN) not proxied
TXT domain.com SPF1 +mx +a ipaddressofhost .... not proxied
TXT default domain key domain key from hosting (RN) not proxied

I tried using thunderbird to connect to the mail server and holy cow what a pain in the ass, it is also very slow. I do have access to the dns records of the cPanel account but it only lets me add certain record types. Please help I want to shoot myself at this point.
