2024.06.02 01:25 Tacticool-weeb4 ambush (part2) finally

Good news was joe and Kasumi where really fast and had great cardio.
Bad news is over a hill came voices and shouting. There was a whole other company sized element out of sight and coming for that ass.
They were rolling down hill and trying to find a good place to break contact.
Joe almost tripped but grabbed a hanging branch. Feet coming out form under him.
He looks up and see’s some of the Bundeswehr hope over a low rock buried into the dirt. High up and lay an MG42 over a tree. Their boss shouting “ LOS! LOS! LOS!” as the men spread out and moved downhill to find good shooting spots.
“cover!” he shouted. Kasumi didn’t even need to look. She slid down some leaves and under a rock cropping. Rounds from the riflemen bouncing around her. Joe jumped behind a brush pile of thick trees and earth.
The old buzzsaw ripped rounds, raking across their cover. Cutting tree branches and shaking leaves.
One guy went wide and ended up on a similar level as Kasumi. She turned and shot him from behind cover.
Joe waited for the MG to change positions.
‘Holy shit… THAT’S! what the boys in Europe were dealing with? Fuck me that’s frightening.’
He’d been shot by the MG42 before. But could never get over how shitty it felt”
He peaked around a standing tree, flipped his carbine to full auto and raked across that position. Normally he wouldn’t do this but just once he figured he could somewhat suppress and use his rifle like an MG. if only he had a big quad mag….. wait? He did. In his coat!... that he wasn’t wearing… fuck.
Kasumi returned fire with a burst of her own.
Joe rolled back and went to reload. Tossing his empty mag out. But his barrel happened to be a bit high. So a stray round from the Germans ripped through the air and struck his suppressor. Almost lurching the gun from his hand. Only being saved by his sling.
His eyes went wide.
‘This fucking sucks!’ he inspected his gun. Sure enough, suppressor was done for. Thank goodness he still had his gloves. It took him a moment but he decoupled and pulled the piping hot piece of metal off and tossed it. A full mag on full auto alone was enough to make the thing too hot to touch.
But he was back in the fight. “moving!” Kasumi shouted as she peeled back to more cover.
“set!”
Before he could move, he saw the MG gunner raise his head to get a look at them. Big mistake.
Back to semi auto. Placing the chevron of his sight high on the chest the recon man squeezed a round of grazing the top of the man’s armor. spalling off the mans plate and sending chunks of body armor and lead fragments into his throat. He fell back into the leaves. Clutched at his throat while his assistant gunner went to render aid.
They might get the gun back up but it gave the Allans enough time to get out of there.
“Moving!” he shouted and went to run. Choosing a path with the most amount of tree cover and even a low dry creek runoff that probably is where rain from the top of the mountain flows down.
Funny, these mountains kinda reminded him of west Virginia where he lived back in the 30s.
they slipped down and bounded from one piece of cover to another. Dropping a few Germans here and there, looking for a way out of the holler and even the playing field. Or break contact and hide for a bit.
But they where definitely out numbered. But just the two of them but their convoy as a whole.
They didn’t know what the hell was going on. But most likely someone figured out gold would be here and was looking for a payday for him and… maybe 60 of his friends?
The Allans got lower and lower. Funneling close together. They had tried to stay apart so one grenade or burst from the machine guns wouldn’t kill or wound both of them.
But they came to a unfortunate discovery.
They where in a bowl. No way out into a different Haller. They would need to climb a near open slope while being fired on from an opposite ridge.
Joes boots sunk into the mud and leaves as he twisted from looking at the slope and looking for a way to get him and his wife out of there to turning back at the hostiles and laying hate. But he was about half his ammo down. And Kasumi was about the same. She had her type 89 laid up on a rock and shooting from an in placed position.
He looked up and saw they had picked the MG from the dead gunner and was running down the hill, leaning against a tree. When a large bullet slammed into the mans chest and broke through the place carrier.
A bit away some men had massed and got caught up in an explosion.
They looked up and saw David mounting his 60 on a height position and raked the other side with 45-70… the costume-built machine gun barked loud and frightening. Tore chunks out of men’s shoulders, legs. Chests. Anything those bullets hit got turned into mush.
One mans armor stopped the round but it broke his ribs and ruptured his lungs from the trauma.
Their backup had arrived.
The gallowglass used a tried-and-true tactic of fighting hard and fast and making themselves seem bigger then they actually where. They needed to scare the krauts and push them back to rescue their scouts.
Dante had his .275 Rigby rifle and was taking aimed shots. Anyone who looked important. People with grenade launchers. Scoped. Even an officer looking gentleman.
Anderson sent a round of 45-70 from his lever-action through a retreating german. His green malted flektarn jacket stained red with his blood. Which in the chaos of it all gave joe an important piece of info… these were humans. Not some monster in disguise.
They started to fall back and the Allans ducked into some dense brush and slipped up the hill to make it to their unit.
Everyone was hitting them with what they had as hard as they could.
“we got them!” dante shouted as both killer huffed and slid to his feet. even with all their cardio they had be in vehicles for the last few days and mountains where no joke.
Everyone started to peal back. They still had about half a mile they needed to flee with.
And they really didn’t want to take the direct route and lead these bastards back to the trucks. Except for joe, who had an idea.
“they left the ambush. We need to go now! Their on foot, if we can rally up we can push through”
Dante was technically team leading this little mission but the whole wolfpack had a very non-liner command structure. For those of you who don’t speak bullshit that means if you have an idea, say it. If everyone agrees your not loosing your mind they listen.
‘team lead’ just means you fill out forms, talk to local political figures and deal with higher up when you screw up… higher up these days being dantes little sister so he got comedically shoved into that billet.
“whats your plan?” he shouted as he ran. His hunting boots trotting along side the recon marine and huffing with a fresher brisk pace. Freaking young’ns.
“lin! I need your grenade launcher on the front truck! We hit those claymores from far enough away and break the trees up. smashing them. We drive right through!”
The hong kong cop nodded.
“this shit is why we had mark-19s on our lead trucks in the corps”
David had been the last guy up. dumping the last of his can of ammo and turning and sprinting. He’d reload later. Slinging his MG and pulling his sig. he was deceptively quick. The big eskimo could run like a bear.
“are we bringing back the grenade launcher vs minigun debate?”
The Irishman shook his head. Anyone wanna explain to him why he thought it would be a good idea to befriend the SEAL?
In breaking contact they didn’t make a B line, but dog legged in a more Z pattern. Finaly getting back to the trucks everyone sprinted and shouted for people to get into place. The friendly germans looked shocked and panicked to do what the mercs where yelling. They thought something big was coming. Several people dove into open doors and went to the far side of the truck to make room for whoever was coming in after them.
The MRAP didn’t have a mounted gun. Much to their chagrin now. They went on the mission with the vehicles they had, not the ones they wanted. And the reason this one was lead was because if they hit an IED they wanted this to tank it.
Joe unslung his M4 “dave!” he shouted. The big guy nodded and they tossed their weapons to each other mid run. Dave also tossed a belt of about 100 rounds. Getting a running start joe leapt. Kicked off the tire and ended up on the hood of the armored vehicle. Turning back he reached a hand out. Lin was shorter but just as athletic. Bounding up she took his hand and he pulled her up.
“ok. Gonna fill me in?”
“get a grenade ready. We hit the barricade and keep driving” he hit the window alerting the driver. “get a move on!”
Kasumi took joes place in the chase vehicle. Dave had reached in the back and pulled out a 240 bravo. Not even able to hook it in the turret mount he just was gonna have to shoulder this.
It would be a miracle if no one got hurt.
They steamed full ahead. Joe placed himself to lins right. Towards where the hill was. Which was where the krauts would be coming from. A round struck the passenger side window of the MRAP making the occupant jump in their seat. Joe turned and gave a short burst as he saw maybe a dozen fighter. Followed by dave and anyone else. Some people staged automatic sub guns or PDWs by their seats and just turned in a fairly American style drive by.
They rounded a corner and found themselves on a straight away.
“barricade!” lins voice was barely hurt over the wiz of the germans 5.56.
She blooped her destructive egg about 80 yards from the kill zone.
Joe pulled the leash from his riggers belt. made so you wouldn’t fall out of helicopters. Buckling it to a D-ring on the hood. Holding lin close because she didn’t have one on. The chinses woman growned but held on because she knew this was about to get bumpy.
The skilled driver floored it after the demo went off. Sending dirt and sticks high in the air and weakening the trees. Smashing into it they turned back to see the shock and confusion of men not in their fighting positions.
The convoy chugged past.
Some even saw in the middle of all these trucks a minotaur and Anderson giving them the middle finger. Before raising their guns and shooting again.
The radio call came to slow down fire. And a few moments later to cease.
Lins head was in joes chest as she felt it rise large and fall as he let out a breath.
Both mercs looked at each other.
“damn fine shot” he held up a fist.
He pumped it.
“I want to get off mister hounds wild wide now! Never did like theme parks!”
He nodded. No joke. They ended up slowing a moment to crawl through the window.
The occupants handed them water bottles. Both now realizing how thirsty they where.
2 days later they found themselves at a castle.
“now this is what im talking about!” Anderson jumped with joy. Taking pictures with his phone.
One of the germans called it eltz castle. Apparently in one reality its been held by the same family sense like the 1100s. they where their to pick up more gold before turning around and heading for Venice. Last minute pick up.
“ok… I was wrong. I thought castles like this wouldn’t still be around” joe wondered dumbly. He has been known to be wrong every once and awhile.
“here. Anderson. Lemme get some pictures for you… say ‘treasure hunt’
The detective gave a thumbs up. his cowboy hat and lever action striking a pose.
The Polaroid came out and joe handed both to him. He then walked around and got more reference photos.
Kasumi walked over. “when did we get like that?” she wondered.
Joe and his wife had a ….different kind of marriage. More to tax dodge and share rent then anything… but about 20 years in they found they really did love each other… that was a few hundred years ago now.
“later then we should have” he mumbled and tossed a arm over her shoulder.
“best job I ever had” she quipped.
“best life I coulda asked for”

2024.06.01 22:31 sc_yoyos I chose The Penitence of the True Guilt as my first penitence. Here's how it went.

By the end of this penitence, I have about 100 hours in the game (70 on steam, probably 20-30 on switch before I repurchased and moved to steam). I had about 30 on steam I think after my first playthrough, and I explored everything and completed everything I could in my first run. Blasphemous is the first metroidvania I've played, so I'm not amazing at the game by any means but it's one of my favorites. Before I knew that the other two penitences provide beads that would help out with doing the Penitence of the True Guilt, I chose it as my first to give myself a challenge and get what I viewed as the hardest out of the way first. I haven't done the other two yet, so I don't know if it actually is the hardest penitence but it was rough. I'll be going through all the bosses and how many attempts it took me to beat each of them, as well as the beads, prayers, and hearts I used most often. I also decided to do Ending C in this run because it was the only ending I hadn't seen yet, so that means I also did Sierpes and Isidora in this playthrough.
TL;DR: Penitence of the True Guilt is a hard penitence to do. At least I had a hard time. Light of the Lady of the Lamp bead, Saeta prayer, and Molten Heart were my saving graces. Isidora (13 attempts) was the hardest boss I think although not the most attempts I did, and had a comically hard time with Tres Angustias (63 attempts) because I didn't upgrade my health prior to the fight at all. Also fought the Amanecidas in this playthrough, and worked on the Requiem Aeternam achievement so I didn't really make use of my fervor flasks. I don't think I recommend doing this penitence first.
Favorite Beads:
Besides those, I would just switch out beads situationally, usually slotting in elemental defense depending on the boss.
Favorite Prayers:
Favorite Hearts:
Bosses (in order, spoilers for DLC bosses):
And yeah, that's about it. I also ended the game with 412,410 tears of atonement, even after buying all the shop items, and donating entirely to the church, including getting the skin. If y'all have any recommendations for which of the remaining two penitences I should do next or any boss tips, I'd love to hear. Sorry about the novel of a post but I wanted to share my experience as it was very challenging to finish the game on this penitence. Also, as a random fun fact, those charging dudes in the Wall of Holy Prohibitions? I didn't have any trouble with them in the regular game but they were a complete pain in NG+. Hate them so much.

2024.06.01 22:30 supercircinus Trying to get the hang of diagrams !

Trying to get the hang of diagrams !
I’ve been learning to crochet and for the past couple of months have been intent on learning how to read crochet diagrams. Normally I am bead weaving and learned that I felt so much more free and creative when I learned how to read beading diagrams so wanted to try with crochet too.
The pattern I used was originally a children’s pattern so I sized up my yarn and hook (I think it was a gosyo Japanese- English pattern). It was fun to challenge myself and I def made a few mistakes but learned a lot along the way. I also opted to create side ties as opposed to seaming since this dress used an oversized bodice in the pattern (like super wide arm holes) also made two butterflies in the DK yarn for my shoulder straps.
I used silk cotton DK weight and I think a combo of 3.5-4.0mm hooks. Smaller hook for the waist rows. The ruffle edges are made silk cotton in the arms and cashmere cotton on the neckline. The dress is silk and mostly hand sewn by me…although I did learn that my machine plays nice with the silk thread I use in a lot of my beading/embroidery (woooo) super fun and love the end product. Here I am wearing it to a small artisan market- it was really lovely to meet with folks and chat about handmade stuff. Hoping to try other patterns in diagram to keep learning.

2024.06.01 06:49 SimsAreShims Paul Tremblay and Leaving it to the Reader's Imagination/Interpretation

Let me apologize in advance: I'm going to be a bit of a hater here. Also, spoilers ahead.
In general, I hate open ended stories (be it books, movies, whatever). It comes across to me as lazy, as if the author didn't know how to end, so they got vague about it. This is a personal preference, sure, but it's one I feel very strongly about. To clarify, I do not need the story to be wrapped up in a nice, neat little bow, where everyone has a happy ending. A story can "finish" before it "ends".
What the hell do I mean by this?
Take, for example, Stephen King's The Long Walk. Major spoilers: Even though Garraty wins, he doesn't accept it, and starts running. We don't get a whole lot of world building to find out how the Long Walk became a thing, we don't follow Garraty after this, and thus we have no idea what happens, but the story is done. Extending it or explaining it wouldn't enhance the story; if anything, writing more would probably bring the horror elements down. The story was finished even though it didn't "end".
Back to Tremblay.
My first exposure to him was of course Cabin at the End of the World. This was before the movie, and it should have been RIGHT up my alley. World ending story that also contains references to religion? Hell yeah! Except, Holy hell, I could not read this thing for the life of me. The book starts off from the y y/o daughter, Wen's POV; she talks about her life, what it's like being adopted, taking language classes. She's in the yard organizing grasshoppers by size and giving them names and writing down what she thinks their genders are and OH MY GOD WHEN IS THIS STORY ACTUALLY STARTING??? At that point, I decided to try to skip ahead. Tremblay was verbose in other parts, so I tried to skip ahead. I ended up mostly going through the dialogue, reading more if it seemed relevant, and was left disappointed. I think the story really would have been enhanced by exploring the backgrounds of the four visitors, but, from what I did read, that didn't happen.
I checked the Wikipedia page to see if it was worth going back and trying again, but the ending If it was the end of the world was left kinda ambiguous. I could see an argument where The planes crashing is too much of a coincidence, so yes it is, plus the movie changed it to flat out saying it's the end of the world, but it just came across as so lazy to me. If anything, I think making the ending unambiguous would make the story better. It doesn't need to go on for much longer, but explaining what the "answer" is, in either case of the world ending or not, would reframe the rest of the story and make it better.
But maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance. I read someone say on here that there is a lot of subtlety in Tremblay's writing, and maybe that would have explained it more if I didn't skip to just the dialogue, so I decided to give him another chance by reading Growing Things and Other Stories, a collection of short stories. Warning: No more spoiler tags after this.
The collection starts withe the titular story Growing things, where there are deadly vines growing in the world. The dad leaves his daughters to go out to look for supplies. He explicitly says that if there is a knock at the door, don't answer it, because it means it's the end of the world. And at the end of the story, there's a knock at the door! The girls go upstairs to avoid the knocking and the vines that have invaded the house, and that's it. I guess this one has an ending: the world ends, and the daughters are waiting to die. Details of their death are left to the reader's imagination, as is any details of the vines, as is a lot of background of the characters. I know nothing, and not in a good way. Let's try the next one.
Swim wants to Know if It's as Bad as Swim Thinks. We start off with the unnamed protagonist working her job at a grocery store, where people are crowding the store trying to buy their items. The protagonist's coworker is talking about something coming out of the water. Protagonist says it's just a movie trailer. Protagonist goes on message boards about consuming meth, so we know she's an unreliable narrator. Not a problem, as this is not quite the same as an open-ended story. She kidnaps her daughter, who she does not have custody of, and takes her to a place from her childhood to be safe with her daughter. But she's following patterns from when she last took her daughter while she was under the influence. She has a gun, and it seems like the police have found her. So she might kill her daughter, and I guess actually there's no monster. Ironically, this story has a lot more world building than the previous one, but it's still left open ended in a way that doesn't contribute to any fear or thrill of the story.
Next up: Something About Birds. To write this review, I re-borrowed this book online from the library to refresh my memory. It wasn't until stumbling upon the ending that I even remembered I read this story, because it elicited absolutely no strong emotion in me, not even distaste. I don't remember it, skimming through doesn't remind me of what happened, so I can't properly comment on it. Same deal with the next story, Snapshot. Looking through the table of contents and skimming through the next several stories (minus Teacher, more on that later), it looks like I skipped reading a lot of them, until I got to "It's Against the Law to Feed the Ducks." Intriguing name, I like animals, so I read this one.
This story is from the POV of the young son, Danny. They go to the beach, which is weirdly empty. When back at the cottage, the parents watch some TV, presumably the news, and are horrified; they get Danny out of the room so they can keep watching. Next day, they go to the grocery store, where it's empty, but people have overflowing grocery carts. Remember from earlier, this is a bad sign. Electronics are also down, as dad has to pay with a check. Another day, another trip to the grocery store; this time, the cashier lets them take the groceries without bothering to count it (another sign!), and Dad fills up the car with gas and gets extra gas cannisters. More TV watching, except in the empty restaurant, where the parents ask to have the TV turned off because of the kids. The story ends with the reason why the title is what it is: it's against the law to feed the ducks, which they obey at the beginning, but not the end, because the world is ending. We never learn what is happening, which makes sense if the POV is from a child, but that doesn't add to the horror. There's no horror from the kid's POV, just confusion. The reader is supposed to understand that Bad ShitTM is going down, but without any details, I quite frankly don't know why I should care. This is essentially a story about buying groceries and watching TV, bookended by ducks.
Of the stories I've described thus far, we get the whole end-of-the-world theme repeated, without anymore details, without any real ending, and without me caring. The one exception is Teacher, which I liked so much, I read it thrice: the first time, a second time when I remembered it existed, and then I read it again fully to write this review, rather than skimming it.
The story starts with an introduction to Mr. Sorent, the cool teacherTM. He has long hair and plays guilets the highschool seniors talk about more controversial topics like drugs and abortion, and has some days has SpecialTM lessons, which has the same rule as Fight Club: you do not talk about Fight Club Special lessons. In the first one, he shows a video of a daycare/preschool, where a teacher is spinning around with a child and accidentally lets go. Mr. Sorent stops the video, and then moves it frame by frame until a wall comes into view. That is the end of the first special lesson.
Time passes, more special lessons. More disturbing videos, a guest who reflects on how awful it is to have a disease and be used as inspiration porn, all of which end with the video moving a few frames. The protagonist, Kate, tells a story about when she was a kid, and she was forced to watch some boys mutilate a dead frog, and how it affected her baseball game. As the SpecialTM lessons bring down the students' academic lives, their personal lives and kate's family life deteriorate as well. The story ends with Kate trying to prevent the video from finishing using the same coping mechanism she used after watching the frog get mutilated: She volunteers for a demonstration, and moves forward without opening her eyes, hoping that if she doesn't, the film will never finish, and the accident with the child will never occur.
So what makes Teacher stand out from the others?
Tremblay actually talks about what's happening; we're shown the progression of the class, the reason why it's happening. There's no mystery of what's on the TV, or why the students are acting the way they are. The why is clear: they're being taught disturbing life lessons from a teacher they used to trust and admire. Sure, we don't actually know if they ever finish watching the video, or what happens after, but it doesn't matter, because the story isn't about that. It's about the students, and we see their arc, as they go from normal teenagers to depressed and cynical teenagers.
In the other works I've mentioned so far, we mostly get that the world is ending (or the addict mother thinks it is), but we don't know how. Considering that the end of the world is what's moving the stories along, IT'S KIND OF A BIG DEAL. Even in Cabin, where the horror is that the family is trapped in a deadly situation, knowing whether or not there's any truth to the visitor's reason for coming to the cabin would enhance the story. Compare to King's The Mist: book ends ambiguously, movie ends tragically, and even King says the movie ending was better. But with Tremblay, time that could be used for learning more about the visitors and if it's the end of the world is instead used on organizing grasshoppers.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk. Next time I'm here, I'll try not to write in a faux manic state while mildly sleep deprived at 5 am.

2024.06.01 05:59 DariganZafara Should SML switch to analog horror?

So I had a dream about an episode of SML called Jeffy’s Pony! where Jeffy asked for a pet giraffe, but Marvin said no and Jeffy starts arguing and Marvin yells at him as usual, and tells Jeffy to go to his room. Rose and Marvin were talking and Rose said Jeffy could use another pet but Marvin brought up the escaped hamster and paralyzed dog. Meanwhile Jeffy is in his room mad at Marvin and creates his own pet by saying doodle doodle pencil fart and a red horse appears with a mane and tail made out of yarn, and it says “Neiiiggghhhh!” in Harry’s old voice.
Jeffy tries to name the horse “Yarn Ass” and feeds it his green beans and keeps him in the closet. But Marvin finds it anyway and tells Jeffy he can keep it only if he promises to take care of it. Jeffy being Jeffy forgets his promise and opens the door one day and Yarn Ass is visibly rotting and zombifying and says “Make this stop” and Jeffy screams and runs to Marvin yelling Daddy theres something wrong with my gee-raffe and Marvin says he forgot to feed him and I dont remember anything after that.
Should puppet era SML go this route? Evelinka’s puppet style would be perfect for this and they already kinda did it in The Secret Door. Also I still want a Cayuga duck character on the show for some reason.

I'm making some cute dice bags for my new dnd group, and I'd like to find some alternatives to the accent stitches provided in the pattern. It just needs to be the height of a double crochet and only take one row. Unfortunately, this was a little too specific for google. The ones included in the pattern were regular dc, crossed dc, and bead stitch, Any others yall can think of?

I am looking at this kit: https://www.123stitch.com/item/Mill-Hill-Dolphin-Beaded-Cross-Stitch-Kit/MH17-2213
I'd like to know what colors of thread it uses so that I can pick an appropriate color of linen to sub in for the paper. If I can find out before I buy the pattern then I can buy the fabric and kit in one go. Ta!
Edit: I'm looking for the DMC numbers. I've got a few light blue fabric options and I'm trying to decide which would go best with the thread.

Alternate Really Acolytes: Introduction
Ancient legends from thousands of years’ past once told of a magical portal that resided in a forest in the north. A tale that a portal as black as night which bore three rings on its frame would sing a song of chaos before unleashing forces of calamity upon the world. While this portal was easily found, every attempt to destroy the ruinous portal was left unsuccessful. Heroes’ swords would shatter upon its cold, metallic frame. Dwarven forged magma would cool instantly upon contact. No form of magic could move, much less scratch it. In the end, instead of attempting to destroy the device, researchers studied it in an attempt to reduce the damage of whatever could come from the other side.
Countless centuries had passed. The building that surrounded the portal had changed several times, from a temple of worship, to an altar to appease the unknown gods beyond, to a facility of study. Scholars, researchers, and the top scientists have come and gone. Even to this day, nothing could be figured out about the device. Its metal was stronger than any alloy ever known and its makeup couldn’t even be determined. The runes on its rings were never translated, for no correlation could be found from any written language. As time went by, people gave up and soon after, the legend fell into obscurity, the protection spells cast upon and around the portal had expired long ago, and the world forgot about the calamity that was supposed to come. The facility that now housed the ruins had fallen into disarray long ago. The only thing that remained the same was the black sheen of the portal’s rings, unmoved, untouched, and unchanged.
One day, a group of juvenile kids broke through the rusted doors of the facility, “You sure you know where we are going?” one of the kids, a teenage human boy, asked, “You said we’d find an ancient artifact, but all I’ve seen so far is a bunch of junk machinery.”
“Quit complaining,” a young elf boy replied, “I’ve been exploring this place for about a century and the building has been abandoned for longer. The artifact can’t be moved at all, so it’s not like it’s going to have gone anywhere.”
“So, what are we going to do with it that hundreds of adults haven’t done?” a tiefling girl questioned, “It’s not like we’ve got the ability to do much, Jaz. Seriously, only one of us is from a sorcerer bloodline, and he’s the youngest of us three.”
“That’s exactly why I brought him with us Tal,” Jaz brushed the comment aside as he shoved a sliding door back into its socket, “Erick isn’t just from any old sorcerer bloodline, but from a wild magic bloodline. While most people claim that there’s only a select amount of reactions that could happen when magic goes wild, my grandfather claims that to be untrue, so we’re going to test that theory tonight.”
The three trekked through the ruins of the derelict testing site, passing by multiple research halls and storage facilities holding ancient machines, artifacts, and constructs from generations’ past. Along the way, Erick spoke up, “Even if we do manage to activate the portal, what do you expect to happen? Wasn’t there an old tale of the portal bringing calamity?”
“Oh please,” Jaz waved Erick’s concerns aside, “That crummy old legend is so long overdue. If the portal was to bring the end times, it would have been done by now. I’m sure whatever that was supposed to come about had already done so before the legend was even created.”
“So, we’re opening a portal to a realm where an old disaster came from. I highly doubt anything would go wrong with that idea,” Tal mocked sarcastically.
“Sheesh, no one here has that spirit of adventure that we had five years ago, I see,” Jaz huffed to himself.
Eventually, after passing through expansive corridors, the three made it to the center of the building, coming across a pair of bunker doors, “Oh, wow. Looks like a portal, alright,” Tal deadpanned.
“Jeeze, no need to be an ass about it. I saw the portal frame beyond these doors by looking through reinforced glass on the sides of the room,” Jaz retorted.
“So why aren’t we going through those rooms instead of trying to bust our way through a heavy set of doors?” Tal asked.
“Because those pathways are nothing but catwalks above a pit I can’t even see the bottom of. And if I recall correctly, explosions tend to not be good on catwalks, and none of us can fly.”
“So we are getting through this door… how?”
Jaz smirked, “That’s where you come in. You know how your infernal powers are extremely potent? Strong enough to melt that old bunker tank we found a few months ago with ease?” Tal thought back to that moment and recalled how she melted a tank in several seconds while her other tiefling friends struggled to even warp the plating. “Well, if it’s strong enough to melt a tank, I’m sure it’s strong enough to melt a door. So give it a crack.”
“Fine, I’m not sure how well this will go, but I’ll give it a shot.” Tal passed by Erick and Jaz before stopping in front of the right bunker door. She rubbed her hands together before placing them on the metal front of the door, focusing on channeling her innate magic through her hands. Slowly, the area of metal she was pressing against started to give off heat, even turning red before Tal began to sweat from straining herself. With a gasp, she let go of the door, a faint pair of handprints barely indented the door, “That’s all I got. We ain’t getting through.”
“Seriously, Taffy? That’s all you got?” Jaz blurted out.
“Hey! Don’t call me Taffy! You know I hate that name!” Tal shot back.
“Oh, yeah? What are you going to do? Taffy!” Jaz mocked, “Ta-” he was interrupted by a fireball flying at him. Jaz barely ducked out of the way, singing his hair almost to the roots, leaving a giant hole in his hair and a large scorch mark behind him. “Oh it’s on.”
The two got in each other's faces, looking like they were about to trade blows. Meanwhile Erick simply studied the doors, tracing the exterior until he found a subtle mark in the corner. He gave it a closer look and found that it was actually a welding indent, probably hiding the wires that powered the giant doors. He traced them back several rooms to find an electrical panel. Upon opening it, he found that the fuses were all corroded heavily. Tossing the ruined material away, Erick found a set of wires that didn’t seem to have weathered much decay. Taking a deep breath, he focused his magic in his best attempt to keep it from going wild, stuck his hand into the panel, and cast his magic, causing a large surge of electricity to go through the wires. Red emergency lights turned on as a siren began to blare. Returning to the room in front of the doors, he found that the two had actually come to blows while he was gone. Jaz was in a half nelson grapple while trying to space himself by holding Tal at arm’s length by the chin, he had a large bruise on his cheek while Tal had a small chipping on one of her horns. The two apparently stopped when the doors were activated. When the doors stopped and the sirens returned to silence, Jaz and Tal turned towards Erick with their mouths agape, “There, solved the problem,” Erick said nonchalantly, passing by his friends and into the room ahead, “Now c’mon, we have a portal to activate, don’t we?”
Jaz and Tal shook their heads as they got off each other and caught up with Erick, only to find him at the top of a set of stairs with his mouth agape this time. They followed his gaze and reacted the same when they realized that the portal they’ve been after this whole time, was glowing, “That wasn’t how it looked like a week ago,” Jaz confirmed.
The glow quickly became an afterthought when the portal rumbled as the rings began to move for the first time in centuries. They slowly accelerated until the runes became impossible to track. Once the rings reached their apex speed, the droning sound of what sounded like chants were heard coming from the portal. The droning died out quickly as the rings quickly stopped, before turning the opposite direction and the droning began again. This became a pattern as more sounds followed in suit: ticking, clicking, scraping, hissing, chirping, and an eerie whistle all followed in a somehow harmonious tune, all following the chant of the portal.
“A portal that would sing a song of ruin before releasing disaster upon the world,” Jaz whispered.
“What do we do now?” Erick asked, “Should we get someone? Wasn’t this supposed to be a dangerous artifact?”
“I don’t know,” Tal breathed through clenched teeth, “Would anyone be able to react fast enough? Should we contact the magic council? I mean, we aren’t supposed to be here. What do you think, Jaz? Jaz?!” she turned to find that Jaz had turned tail and fled the scene not too long ago, “Jaz!” she called again. No response.
Not soon after, the portal’s rings froze in place suddenly, a moment of pure silence filled the room as the rings suddenly burst into its segments, all floating in orbit around its center. From each segment, a beam of energy emerged from it and coalesced into an orb of plasma at the center, slowly growing wider until it filled the original empty space the portal had. From within the ball of plasma, two beings emerged from its core. A man with jet black hair, tanned skin, and dark jade green eyes emerged first. His clothing looked like he came right from an apocalypse. He looked around the room before turning back around and reached back into the portal, pulling a woman out from the core. The woman had white hair, pale skin, and radiant purple eyes. Her clothing looked like it was in an even worse state, her black robes were completely tattered. She looked around as well before turning back to the man. The language she spoke was completely foreign to the two young teens. The man conversed in the same unknown language before turning back to the area around them. Eventually, the two beings found Erick and Tal. The kids were paralyzed by both fear and awe at what just happened, both holding their breath in hope that the two beings from beyond ignore them.
Alas, that hope was squandered as the two approached them. The man and woman approached the two, Erick locked eyes with the man as he stared through the kid. Irregular eyes was the first thing Erick noticed, his left being rectangular like an octopus, while his right was sharp like a lizard’s. The woman stared in turn at Tal, her purple eyes faintly glowed and revealed a sense of curiosity, the only emotion Tal could find on the woman’s face. With a breath, the man spoke, “Ahf' ye'bthnk ymg' ah ai, gof'n?”
Erick was stunned, he was expecting a language that would pierce the fabric of reality, or make his head explode. Instead, it was simply a sentence that he just didn’t know or understand, “Uh… um… I don’t know what you said, sir…” he wasn’t even sure if the beings were male and female at the time, or if they had a concept of gender where they were from, but he spoke on pure instinct, worried any word he uttered would result in the being to become enraged and turn him inside out. Tal eyed Erick with baited breath, hoping this encounter with the unknown wouldn’t result in either of their demise.
The result was a rather tame one compared to their wildest expectations. Instead, the male being studied Erick before clearing his throat, “Apologies, it’s been a few centuries since I spoke in this language. I didn’t expect the first people we would meet to be so young.”
“There’s a third, running away from here,” the woman pointed in a direction between the facility and the village the three kids were from, her eyes glowed brighter for a brief moment, “Older, age-wise, but still young physically and mentally,” her voice was monotone, like someone who couldn’t portray emotion.
The male nodded before turning back to Erick and Tal, “What’s this world like? Does magic exist here? Creatures of legend and beings as old as time?”
“T-there’s plenty of magic around,” Tal explained, “Almost every living thing has at least some magic within them.”
“And there have been times where the gods have roamed the land,” Erick added, “It’s not often they are seen though, mostly within or around the wizard council.”
The male hummed, seeming pleased with the answer, “It seems our hunch was right. I think we’ll be around for a while, Sister.”
“Very well,” the woman replied, “Let’s get settled, then.” The two proceeded to pass by Erick and Tal, heading towards the facility’s entrance.
“W-wait!” Erick blurted out, causing the two to stop and turn back towards the kids. As Tal looked like she was about to have a heart attack, Erick summoned the courage to ask, “There was an old prophecy, or I guess a legend about that portal,” he pointed back to the portal, which had now converted back to it’s original position, no trace it was active at all once more, “The stories tell that beings of calamity would come through and destroy this world. Are you two those beings of calamity?”
The two stared at each other before returning back to the kids, both speaking in unison, “We can be,” before turning back to the entrance and continuing onward.
Erick and Tal watched the two leave their sight before looking at each other with both confusion and dread. After several minutes, the rundown atmosphere started to get to the kids and they hastily took their leave. Upon returning to the village, they were promptly scolded by family members for being out so late, but both refused to tell any details regarding their adventure. They met up with Jaz the following morning and after a verbal beatdown for chickening out despite being the one to bring up the idea of going to the facility, Jaz confirmed that he didn’t tell anyone about what happened the prior day either. The three swore to not speak of the incident unless the world was about to end, for fear that they would be not believed at least, or ostracized for their actions at most.
Decades later, none of them spoke a word of that fateful day, but all three wonder what happened to the two that came from the portal, or where they could now be.
“Brother, I miss Glo, can I bring her here?”
The elder brother sighed, “Be thankful that your fire skeleton incident caused me to promptly fireproof my home. I’m sure a salamander wouldn’t burn this house down, but it makes me more at ease that your lover won’t cause me any financial pain. Sure, Aurora, you can bring Glo over here from now on. Just make sure she doesn’t damage the electrical plant.”
Aurora’s eyes beamed with joy, “Yay!” she threw her hands into the air, symbolizing the excitement her voice couldn’t portray, “Thank you, Arcturus.”
“Yeah, yeah, just don’t cause a mess.” Arcturus groaned as the doorbell rang. He got up from his sofa and approached the door, opening it to find a young man in a delivery uniform, “Grubber Eats order for… Arcturus?”
“Yep, that’s me…” he looked at the nametag on the guy’s uniform, “Erick? With a C and K?”
Erick sighed, “Yeah, the parents back in our home village had a weird tradition for giving their kids weird names, like Eric with a second letter that makes the same sound, a name that’s been long ago shortened to either a C or K mind you, or Taffy for my fiance’s name, but don’t tell her I called her that, she’s hated that name since our childhood.”
“Fiance eh?” Arcturus asked as he accepted the food, “This your primary job?”
Erick shook his head, “No, I have another as the village’s local sorcerer. Being the only one in my family to actually be able to control their magic tends to open a lot of jobs when most people there aren’t as magically gifted compared to other towns. This is just a second job for us to pay for a new house.”
“Well that’s cool. Good luck with your future endeavors.” Arcturus studied the man’s appearance, recognizing some features from someone long ago, “Say, any chance your girl is a tiefling?”
Erick looked stunned, “Why, yes… how did you-” he made a double take upon see Arcturus’ jade green eyes, “Are… are you that man that came from the portal a few decades ago?”
Arcturus laughed, “Yes, that was me, and my sister, Aurora. Nice to formally meet you, the name’s Arcturus Maestas, my sister still has the same last name, too.” Arcturus held out his hand.
Erick nervously shook his hand in return, “Nice to meet you too… You aren’t going to destroy this world any time soon, are you?” he asked, “Or your sister, or anyone you guys know?”
“No, nothing like that for a while,” Arcturus shook his head, “Our patron hasn’t scheduled any formal chaos within this universe from our end for the next…” he pulled out a parchment that looked both in and out of tune with the visuals of their current world, “collapse and reformation of the universe, plus one point seven trillion years. So basically around a similar time after this universe has reset itself.” The parchment disappeared as suddenly as it appeared.
“I… I see,” Erick laughed sheepishly, “Well, it’s nice to meet you again, Mr. Maestas. I should get going now,” Erick turned heel as he prepared to leave.
At that moment, Arcturus noticed something only he could see. After a bit of hesitation, he decided to follow through with it, “One moment, Erick,” Arcturus called out, causing the human to freeze and turn back around, “How are things going financially? You expect to pay off that house in a reasonable time?”
Erick paused for a moment, considering if he should answer honestly, “To be frank, no, things aren’t reasonable right now. Even with the payment from both of my jobs, Tal had to get herself some as well to keep up with expenses. Even then, our average profit is about a dozen gold per month. And we bought a house without a down payment for about thirty thousand…”
“Sounds a bit out of reach for someone like you two,” Arcturus admitted.
“It is, but it was the only one we could get within reason. Despite being of use to our village, my family has a reputation for its debt due to wild magic incidents. My parents both died recently, so the village placed the debt upon me. Fortunately, things could be even worse. I heard that small towns can still often find scorn against infernal beings like tieflings, so going beyond our village isn’t really an option for better housing of reasonable size. This is the best we can do without working ourselves to death or traveling farther than what we are comfortable with,” Erick lamented.
Arcturus thought for a bit before asking Erick to wait a moment. He ventured into his basement and pulled out a small bag of coins. Upon returning to the door, he tossed the bag to Erick, “Here’s a tip, twenty platinum should suffice,”
“Are… are you sure I can have this?” Erick asked as he counted the coin, to which Arcturus nodded, “T-thank you. How can I repay you for such generosity?”
“Like I said, it’s a tip, so that’s already paid for in just,” Arcturus explained, “However, I can offer more if you so desire. The only cost is you help me and my sister with some basic endeavors. You said you have been learning to control your magic?” Erick nodded, “Good, then you can help us with some things. We can pay you much more for much less than what your current jobs will force you through. Think it over. Come knocking again if you ever consider. There will be a bit of danger, so the pay will be well beyond reasonable if accidents do occur. I will ensure you’re not in mortal peril, though.”
“Really? Thank you. I’ll discuss this with my fiance. I hope to see you again, Mr. Maestas. Have a good rest of your day.”
“You too, Erick.” Arcturus waved the young man off before closing the door and placing his order on the table, “Food.”
Aurora stared at her brother, “Don’t incite the one word incantation, Arc. We don’t need him here right now.” Nonetheless, she got up from the couch and opened her share of the meal. “Who was that? I’ve never seen you give a courier such a generous tip before.”
“An old acquaintance from our early years here. He performed a favor for us greater than he even knows, I’m just simply offering to repay such generosity. I doubt he would have accepted the payment in full outright if I didn’t give him a job. The favor would be miniscule to him from an outside perspective after all.” Arcturus winked as three draconic eyes and a crown of jagged horns warped into the fabric of reality around him, giving Aurora a clear message of what he meant.
“I see. If we shall repay him, then we shall do so to what he would consider acceptable.”
And with that, their conversation ended. The two sat in silence as they ate while a couple of towns over, a recently engaged couple would soon discuss what fortune had been offered to them. Little did the latter half know what this fortune would truly entail, and that a lifetime’s worth of adventures would soon follow. Meanwhile in the forest of the north, the frame of the portal flickered to life once more, causing an eerie drone to echo throughout the facility.

2024.06.01 02:22 Huge-Animal-8818 The Awakened Giant [Part 4 - Sound of Mind, Sound of Body]

The world seemed to slow down, as the Picapao shot an energy bolt at the human emperor.
None of us had any time to react. We couldn’t have. But somehow, the sector governor lunged himself at the emperor, pushing him out of the way, and getting hit by the blast in the emperor’s stead.
The avian terrorist curses as he lands and aims the weapon again, as a few more Picapao terrorists approach the platform.
The imperial guard aimed at the first terrorist and used their kinetic weapons, landing four shots on the chest and head of the bird.
The Emperor however does not move, and I tilt my head in confusion as I notice the imperial guards are not blocking the emperor. He kneels and places his hand on the wound, as the governor’s blood slowly pools on the ground.
“Send a medic, quickly!”, shouts the Emperor in an authoritative tone. We look around confused, as we did not anticipate such a thing as terrorism on our planet, but we quickly realise he was speaking to the other humans, and shortly after, two humans dressed in green come out with a stretcher and a bag full of stims.
“Take him to the shuttle and take care of him”, ordered Augustus, unbothered by the violent chaos around him, “and you lot, take cover in the shuttle as well.”
We didn’t need another word to comply, but my curiosity couldn’t be contained. Why was this human, who was so important to the Terran empire, not taking cover or running away? He was one of the most important people in the galaxy. I stay behind as I enter the shuttle to glean the bloodbath outside.
One of the humans was kneeling, holding on to his stomach, groaning in pain.
“Marcus, are you wounded?”, asked the emperor, walking towards the guard.
“I am fine, your highness. My shield simply malfunctioned and I took the concussive force of the blast instead of it being deflected. Might have cracked a few ribs.”
“Go inside as well and ask the medics to patch you up”, ordered Augustus, “and the rest of you, hold your fire. I want to speak with these…”
He pauses, his stare locked on the body of the first terrorist, his face perfectly still. His emotions were hidden well beneath his emperor’s persona.
“... People.”
The terrorists land and aim again, holding their fire as they notice the emperor approaching them with his hands up.
“Valiant Winged Warriors of Kloaria”, he said in Piapia, the native language of the Picapao, “I understand you blame me, for the deaths of the K’krai.”
“Quiet, ape”, said one of the winged criminals, “Your accent is hideous and so is your soul.”
“I apologise for my accent. I have not had many opportunities to train my speech to capture the nuances of your language.”
“Why would you even care?”, said another, “You are nothing more than a monster. You killed billions!”
“Indeed I have. I carry their blood on my hands forever. My name is a curse amongst many people. But I dream that the entire galaxy one day can receive the bounties of Terra. And for that, I need to reach everyone, personally…”
Interrupting him, one of the terrorists curses aloud and shoots his energy rifle at the Emperor, who makes no effort to dodge. The blast hits an invisible barrier, diffusing through the air around the human.
“Bounties such as this. A personal penta-dimensional quantum diffuser. An energy shield that can protect the user from almost any harm.”
He points at the centrepiece of the gold embroidery of his vest, and a barely noticeable glow emanates from it.
“I have a question for you Picapao. Who sent you?”
“We will not tell you anything. Your little imperial guard will have to kill us, as we have no intention of being imprisoned.”
The emperor nodded, sniffing, his eyebrows raised slightly.
“I respect that. You have ideals. Standards”, the human turned away from them and faced the shuttle, his eyes locked on mine. They were sharp and cold. Calculating. The true self of humanity did not replace the once warm presence. The apex predator persona had awoken.
“I believe it was Thucydides, a human of an age long past, who once said -The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools.”
He revealed a bracelet, which glinted in the sunlight. It appeared metallic in the distance, but liquid at the same time.
“With me as emperor, Humanity has embraced this motto. But I go further. I believe that the rulers should be as prepared to die for their subjects, as the subjects are for their ruler”
The bracelet started to glow, morphing into a sword in a fraction of a second. The sword was silvery with a similar pattern of golden embroidery along its blade.
Why would the leader of such an advanced race be using such an antiquated weapon?
“Your enemy will not be my guards, but rather it shall be me. If you kill me, you shall return to Kloaria, being acclaimed as heroes”, the emperor said, turning to face the avians, “but if I defeat you, you shall tell me who else was involved, as the sector governor Elder Prin could have died thanks to your actions. And if you don’t, then the Senate and People of Terra shall have no choice but to consider Kloaria a bastion of hostile powers and decisive action will have to be taken. Agreed?”
The birds yelled in rage and shot their weapons again.
But instead of letting the blasts hit the energy shield, the emperor started dodging as he made his way towards the terrorists. The blasts were near light speed, but the emperor was dodging them nonchalantly. It felt magical, until I noticed his eyes, darting around. He was predicting the trajectories of the blasts.
He got to the first terrorist and cut his rifle in half, delivering a powerful kick to the temple of the bird and making the most of the motion to jump towards the second hostile, ducking and then lunging, the sword cutting through one of the arms of the avian as if it was warm huglun butter.
Finally, the last terrorist yelled in rage and fear and started spraying blasts at the emperor, who retracted the sword back into the bracelet and then performed some sort of human martial art, punching the chest of the avian with such force and precision that a loud crack of bones echoed throughout the platform, as the final Picapao was sent flying around 5 meters without the use of his wings.
The emperor then made his way towards the gasping bird and squatted down.
“So, who else was involved in this attack?”

2024.05.31 23:49 ralo_ramone An Otherworldly Scholar [LitRPG, Isekai] - Chapter 123

A thunderous roar reverberated through the sandstone stands, and the duel arena seemed about to explode. If Ilya, Zaon, and Wolf had sparked the crowd’s interest, Firana brought them to the edge of ecstasy. The exchange of wind and stone spells had everyone on the edge of their seats. Firana jumped through the air using [Windrider] to use thin air as solid surfaces and dodge the barrage of stones. For a moment, I forgot about the Skills and the limitations imposed by the System. All I saw was two magicians using up to their last trick to get the upper hand.
Firana landed and used [Windrider] to jump away from the stone spike emerging under her feet. She performed a backflip and landed softly, barely raising any dust, outside Belya’s range. The synergy between her skills was surprising, considering she had only one week to grow accustomed to them. Sure, the System assisted the usage of skills, but Firana’s movements were well beyond the basics.
Belya used her Geomancer skills to shoot a swift stone missile. Firana dodged, and the projectile crashed against the protective barrier along the arena's edges. The crowd ducked, but the barrier remained unscathed. Firana ignored the crowd’s complaints and darted forward, zigzagging between the stone spikes scattered over the arena, but before she could approach enough, Belya hid in another sandstorm.
Firana hesitated. The sandstorm obscured what happened on the other side, and getting close would have been risky. Suddenly, a stone missile shot through the wall of sand, hitting Firana directly in the chest. The crowd cheered as Firana hit the ground but quickly rolled away as a series of projectiles emerged from the sandstorm. She dodged, jumping between the stone spikes and using [Aerokinesis] and [Windrider] to change her direction mid-flight. The stone bullets crashed against the barrier, prompting a roar from the crowd.
The sandstorm subsided, revealing Belya standing in the eye of the storm.
I had to swallow my words. Advanced Classes were in a completely different league, even at lower levels. The strict hierarchy of this world made even more sense now. Belya and Firana had started the race well ahead of the rest and had a greater potential to develop down the way. At this rate, we would have to fight tooth and nail to carve our way to the finals.
“Focus, dammit!” Ilya yelled from the sideline.
“I’m doing my best! I can’t attack the sandstorm without going blind!” Firana replied, using the brief pause to catch her breath.
“It only lasts fifteen seconds, you airhead!” Ilya yelled.
Firana wiped the sweat from her forehead and pressed the attack. Belya raised her stone-crowned mace, seemingly weightless in her hand, and he blocked Firana's attack. The girl stepped back before the boulder could hit her barriers. The exchange was fast. Firana pressed the offensive to prevent Belya from casting her skills but had to keep her distance to avoid the mace. The fight was tight. Belya understood close-quarter combat well and was skilled enough to keep Firana at bay.
Across the pavilion, Lord Nara covered his face with both hands, defeated. The bracket had already been decided in the previous combat, but that didn’t hinder the crowd’s excitement. Even the other members of Team Nara stood by the edge of the arena, cheering for her teammate. I had been so focused on the court’s schemes that I had forgotten an essential aspect of the tournament. They were kids showing their recently obtained skills.
The common folk rarely saw combatants using their skills. Not in a safe environment, at least. Unlike back on Earth, there weren’t hundreds of shows all year round in Farcrest. The tournament would bolster the Marquis and the Prince’s reputation in the surrounding area.
I wondered how much protection the people’s approval would give us against the Marquis if Sir Janus was right and the Marquis plotted with Kellaren and the Osgirians. There was a reason why the Marquis and the Prince invited commoners, and I thought it had to do with the soft power of the masses. Governors required civil peace to rule over an area, which meant the love of the people could serve as a shield against the Marquis.
I made a mental note to consult with Elincia later. Maybe we could abuse the Alchemists Guild monopoly over potions to gain the hearts of the citizens of Farcrest.
“You are doing great, Firana!” I yelled from the bench, pushing my worries aside and focusing on the combat. Not everything was political agenda. My kids were taking their first steps into the world of adults, and they were doing great.
Firana turned around and waved at me just to take a big stone projectile directly to the head.
“Please, don’t distract Firana. I’m trying to make her win,” Ilya grumbled, giving me a stern look.
Even Belya seemed worried about Firana because she dropped the flying boulder she was preparing, which gave her a moment to recompose. Luckily, the barrier had absorbed the impact. A moment later, Firana raised her guard, and Belya used geomancy to shower her with a wave of sand. Firana used aerokinesis to disperse the attack. Then, without warning, she jumped and attacked from above, taking Belya by surprise and equalizing the score.
Elincia snuggled up next to me with a broad smile on her face.
“Did you expect a better performance?” I jokingly asked.
“I have to stop doubting you, Scholar,” Elincia replied near my ear. “This is like a dream come true. Ilya got her dream class. Wolf is getting along with the other kids. Zaon is a great swordsman. Firana is happy.”
I nodded, but even a dream could turn into a nightmare in a blink. I tried not to think about that and enjoy the show.
“I could go without Astrid and Risha, but nothing is perfect,” Elincia added with a mischievous smile.
“Be grateful they are holding the fort for us, or Nasiah would have to do it,” I joked back.
Elincia grinned and focused on the fight. Firana had scored a clean hit with her sword and was now focused on dodging the mace. Belya couldn’t cast more than one skill simultaneously, which gave Firana enough time to react. Either she summoned a sandstone spike, swung her mace, threw a projectile, or created a small sandstorm around her.
Belya used her mace to kick a hail of stone fragments over Firana, but instead of dodging, she endured the attack and slashed Belya’s chest. Both girls breathed heavily, barely holding to their weapons. There was a reason why rounds in boxing lasted only three minutes. Fighting drained stamina at an alarming speed.
Firana smiled, and Belya grinned back; both were having a great time.
“How much more mana do you have?!” Firana grunted.
“Enough,” Belya replied with a smile, but the stones that wrapped her weapon slipped through the metallic surface, revealing an arming sword similar to Firana’s. “I’ll show you my titles later. My father told me I should reach level nine before the tournament, but I really needed that juicy [Geode Hunter] title.”
“Of course, you are a rock nerd. There’s no way a normal person has so much mana,” Firana sighed.
“Minerals, they are minerals,” Belya replied.
Firana rolled her eyes. In response, Belya dipped her sword in the ground and pulled it out covered in rocks. The stone spikes that hindered Firana’s movement now created a cage around the girls and prevented Belya from retreating. The mana reserves of both girls were dangerously low. From that point on, every skill mattered, and even the slightest mistake could mean defeat.
Firana attacked, but Belya’s close-quarter defense was as good as her channeling skills. She made up for her lack of finesse with the sheer volume of the mace. In a normal fight, that weapon could split open the head of an armored soldier with a single well-aimed strike. Firana didn’t seem concerned. She dodged by millimeters, trying to maximize her offensive options.
Belya’s style wasn’t a secret. She attacked with her skills and defended with the stone mace. Her movements were predictable, but Firana didn’t notice the patterns. Ilya almost pulled her hair by the sideline, trying to assist Firana. After a tight exchange, both girls ended up with their last barrier.
“Sandstorm!” Ilya yelled an instant before the whirlwind started forming around her feet.
Firana shot a wind blow with her free hand. The skill was disturbed, but Belya smashed the ground with her mace, unleashing a rain of debris on Firana. She instinctively covered her face, although the barrier blocked any hit against her. The pebbles didn’t have enough force to shatter it. Belya seized the lapse in Firana’s guard and swung her mace.
Firana grinned. It was a feint. Channeling the little mana she had left, Firana jumped over Belya’s head, letting the mace cut through thin air.
The crowd held its breath.
Firana found support on Belya’s shoulders and shifted mid-air to dive feet first directly against Belya’s legs. Both girls rolled on the dirt, mace, and sword lost in the chaos. Firana tried to push Belya against the ground, but the girl wrapped her legs around Firana’s abdomen, avoiding submission. The struggle continued, but none scored the upper hand. Their punches were too weak to break the barrier.
“I told you not to lose your sword! Goddamit! How many times?!” Ilya yelled.
“They look like a couple of drunks,” Wolf pointed out, but he was kind of a purist of unarmed combat.
At least the crowd was down for a good brawl.
Belya used her geomancy to recall her mace, but Firana caught her wrist before she could swing. Then, Belya dipped her free hand to the ground only to pull it out surrounded by stone. The crowd cheered despite the dust cloud obscuring the view. Firana dodged the blow aimed at her head and caught Belya’s wrist, pushing it against the ground.
Firana managed to push Belya down, but there was a stalemate. The moment Firana let go, Belya would attack with her mace or stone-covered arm. No matter how hard she tried to break free, Firana pinned her down with her arms above her head.
“Unless you want to try to break the barrier with a headbutt, I think this is a tie,” Belya panted.
“I can get away before you can swing,” Firana replied, breathing heavily.
Both their faces were covered in sweat and dust.
“You don’t have enough mana,” Belya grinned.
Firana closed her eyes and focused, but her last strands of mana weren’t enough to cast any spell.
“I can’t believe I’m going to tie against a minerals nerd,” Firana sighed.
“If you give minerals a chance, I’m sure you would like them. Geodes are very cool.”
“I don’t even know what a geode is… but I guess it's a tie.”
Firana rolled away, letting Belya free, her chest going up and down as she tried to catch her breath. None of the girls moved, and the Master of Ceremonies had to approach to ensure they weren’t continuing the fight.
“Fight is over! It’s a tie!” The man announced with his magically amplified voice.
Lord Nara exited the pavilion in a rage, but I didn’t pay much attention. We had done it. Ilya, Wolf, and Zaon entered the arena and lifted Firana from the ground, trapping her in a tight group hug. Despite Lord Nara’s absence, the rest of his team also entered the arena to congratulate our kids. Even the Warrior who had trash-talked Ilya was humble enough to acknowledge his defeat.
Belya rummaged through her pockets and pulled out half a dozen geodes of rainbow colors.
“Kids surely make friends easily,” Elincia said as I offered her my arm.
“You didn’t?” I asked.
“I was a sore loser and a bad winner. If I were Ilya, I would be mocking them,” she replied, and I couldn’t tell if she was joking or talking seriously.
I guided Elincia into the arena as the Master of Ceremonies announced our victory. We were eleven points ahead of Team Nara despite half of our team being classless, and I couldn’t be happier. The performance proved to the kids that their hard work bore fruit and reassured me that my teaching method was effective. All those months of hard work and those sleepless nights were worth it.
“Those were great fights, kids. I’m very proud,” I said as Firana jumped into my arms with a wide smile.
Even Zaon seemed to start accepting the fact we had won.
We formed in the middle of the arena and saluted the crowd, my team to my left and Team Nara to my right. The crowd cheered, and I noticed a few chanted Firana’s name. That wasn’t going to be good for her ego. The Master of Ceremonies announced the next fight would take place after a short intermission.
“Shouldn’t we go with them?” Elincia asked as the kids turned around and entered the pavilion.
“We flex now,” I replied, walking in the opposite direction.
We crossed the arena, Elinica in her blue dress holding onto my arm until we reached the VIP box. Prince Adrien was waiting for us with a satisfied smile on his face. He moved his gold and green cape out of the way and leaned over the handrail to greet us. Everyone had to know this was a victory of the royalist faction.
“I hope our performance pleased Your Majesty,” I greeted with a bow. Despite how casual Prince Adrien was in private, we were on a social instance. Elincia did a graceful curtsy by my side, keeping her head low.
[Awareness] informed me the other nobles in the VIP box lowered their voices to overhear our conversation.
“I am surprised, Robert, Elincia. I didn’t believe there was such talent at Lowell’s Orphanage,” the Prince laughed. “Well, I don’t know if I can say I’m surprised after seeing your titles. Osgirians have a long way to go to procure Scholars of your experience.”
I bowed, accepting the compliment, but I couldn't overlook that he had used ‘Lowell’s Orphanage’ instead of ‘Rosebud Fencing Academy’. After all, being beaten by a group of orphans was way more shameful than being defeated by an established fencing academy. I wondered if the Prince was behind the sudden change of name. I knew him well enough to know he would’ve thought about that. The benefits were great, and the costs were minimal.
After hearing Sir Janus’ suspicions, I saw enemies behind every shadow.
“Some say Firana Aias is your best student, but I’m more interested in Zaon. I see Imperial Knight material in him,” Prince Adrien said, causing a stir in the VIP box. “How long until he gets his class?”
The Prince’s words caught me by surprise. I truly believed Zaon had unmatched bravery; he had jumped to the fight when the thieves attacked me, but I didn’t expect others to look past his timid personality after only one fight.
“By the end of the week, Your Majesty,” I said.
“That is excellent news,” Prince Adrien said, lowering his voice. “From now on, the competition will be harsh. You better prepare, Robert Clarke.”
I couldn’t help but read a second message between the lines.

2024.05.31 22:06 super_hot_juice Cinema Pro: (almost) Definitive guide to Why and How to use it + tips & hacks

Cinema Pro is no more and none of its features are getting ported into new app Video Pro mode, so this is a perfect opportunity to release this (almost) definite guide as to when and how to record video footage in Cinema Pro. All of us are pretty much aware of most its shortcomings this app has but we are not going to complain or talk about them here, instead we are going to celebrate EOL of Cinema Pro.
I could bet my pet that about 90% of Xperia users ain’t touching Cinema Pro because they feel uncomfortable using it, that includes mobile camera enthusiasts. Instead, they go to BASIC Video or Video Pro and I don’t blame them as learning curve in Cinema Pro is pretty steep but on the other hand this camera app has very flexible workflow and results can be stunning if you practice enough.
So, first things first, none of the video camera apps will make your videos gorgeous by itself. Filming a video, much like a taking a photo, is all about framing your shot. Keep in mind that Cinema Pro is meant for static shots and short pans due to lack of auto ISO adjustments. If your shot is poorly framed not even a Burano can save your butt. Frame your shot properly before you even touch record button. But before you even do that here are few things you should read first to get yourself familiar with Cinema Pro.

Here is what Cinema Pro offers and can do that other Xperia camera apps can’t.
CLIP METADATA
This probably was not your first thought I was gonna bring up, right? Unlike Video Pro which does not save any advanced metadata in video clips Cinema Pro does and it does it quite good.
When you go to Cinema Library and play any clip inside your project (not final video) you can tap on ellipsis at upper right corner and choose Details. Brown window will pop up with following metadata such as ~resolution~ and ~FPS~ but besides that we also get ~Look~ we picked, ~Lens~, ~Stabilization~, ~WB~, ~ISO~, ~Shutter~ speed, ~Focus~ and ~Audio~ level. If we import the clip in desktop software we also get ~bit depth~, ~color space~, ~EOTF~, ~format~, etc.
Why is this important? If you are really making a video project there is a great chance that you imported those clips on your desktop OS and that you are editing or retouching them inside some desktop software. Desktop software has power of utilizing metadata for your convenience when manipulating and exporting the video, matching shots, doing color correction or just doing offline editing.
This will make your life a lot easier. As you will see in my sample footage below, I’ve actually automated the burn-in with the Cinema Pro clip metadata (Looks, WB, Shutter, etc.) to make each clip display the metadata on-screen without me having to punch it in manually.
METERING
If you don’t have Metering bar enabled in your UI you are doing it wrong. Go to yellow hamburger menu to the right and tap Customize DISP and make sure you have Metering Manual set to ON.
Again, what is this important? Because of two things. Cinema Pro dims the display all the time when it’s running for some reason (presumably to better show HLG result on screen) so if you have Xperia 1, 1II, 1III, PRO-I you will be struggling to see anything while being outdoors. Situation is not any better on 1IV and 1V but it’s more usable. Do not trust your display when it comes to exposure. Instead trust your Metering bar and always shoot around 0 if possible, you will thank me for this once you view your clip on a HDR UHD TV. If it’s too bright outside you can try lowering the shutter speed to level the exposure just make sure do not have fast moving subjects in frame such as cars because it will look choppy.
Second, we’ve already established that Cinema Pro is meant for static shots or gentle panning but if you have to do something “wild” such as POV or going from one lighting condition to other (and sometimes that means just a simple camera tilt from ground up to the sky) you will need Metering to try to find the middle value. Do a test run without recording first and pay attention at the meter to see how many stops is the spread between one frame to another. Lets say you adjusted ISO/Shutter for the 0 at the beginning of your camera movement and once your done with the move metering is showing +2. In that case you will need to set your beginning value at -1 in order to get to +1 in the end to contain both highlights and shadows. Just keep in mind that most of the time your aggressive tilts will be ranging from 0 to well above or under -/+2 and in that case, you will have to rethink what you want to do. That’s right Cinema Pro is a slow burn and unnecessary methodical because it applies cine camera philosophy to crappy mobile sensors.
WDR with Stabilization
Here is another one that is not available inside BASIC or Video Pro unless you have 5V or 1VI device. WDR or Wide Dynamic Range option is made for Cinema Pro period. Cinema Pro was pretty much useless until WDR options popped up in PRO-I. So, what does it do? It records three frames at once and then stack them together to make one frame. Camera is recording at 120fps and then outputs 30/25/24 fps as final result hence why it’s not available at 60fps in any app. Using WDR in Cinema Pro you contain the highlights which is impossible to do in SDR mode unless you are in some dimmed environment.
General rule is to always have the WDR on but if you can do it without do it. There is no false color option in Cinema Pro but if you toggle between WDR and SDR you will see blown out highlights in SDR as some mushy color on display. It’s quite easy to spot the difference. Unlike in Video Pro in Cinema Pro WDR does not introduce purple cast in dark/black areas when shooting in low(er)-light conditions. Cinema Pro has a bigger threshold when shooting in low-light before introduces purple cast in blacks compared to Video Pro as long as you do not shoot in N/A Look (you shouldn’t be shooting in N/A like ever but more on that later). Video Pro utilizes WDR quite poorly, in daylight scenes it drops the gain making dark areas even darker which boosts the contrast to a point where you get that Pixel zombie decomposition like human faces. Cinema Pro does NOT do that, instead it only affects the highlights mostly.
Drawback of WDR in both Cinema Pro and Video Pro requires separate paragraph because it’s a big issue. Whenever you have high frequency texture in your shot such as tiny rubble road (asphalt) or stone mosaic wall you will get texture floating effect like texture is rearranging itself. It’s super trippy. That issue persists because development team didn’t master the frame stacking while filming. Those three frames that get to be one do not alight properly with the next stacked frame when it comes to big areas with tiny patterns.
But one good thing that also requires its own paragraph is video stabilization with HLG WDR option turned on. As previously mentioned, that combo is not possible in Video Pro or BASIC modes but it is in Cinema Pro. How? Well Cinema Pro crops top and bottom of 16:9 footage to 21:9 so it has some wiggle room to give as some basic stabilization. Stabilization is nothing spectacular but it doesn’t crop in the image in order to enable stabilization like Video Pro does. In other words, it doesn’t take Video Pro stabilized cropped in frame to enable stabilization. It shoots native UHD which is really important to preserve the quality unlike both Video Pro and BASIC that crop in UHD frame to turn on stabilization and then upscale the frame back to UHD. Cinema Pro does not do that.

NIGHTSHOOTING
Cinema Pro does really good night shots due to its flexibility to adjust Looks and auto white balance which I think is superior to Video Pro/BASIC. Funny things is that all of the exposure environment shortcomings during the daytime are not such a big deal during the night time because streets are evenly lit by light poles. So you have more freedom to pan, tilt and walk around while filming in Cinema Pro at night time then during the day. Here is a winning combo to make the night shot as good as possible: ~SDR + VENICE CS + AUTO WB unlocked~. Pretty straight forward. I find VENICE CS greatest strength to be default Look for nighttime as it’s easy on ISO, doesn’t boost contrast and has the least noise compared to some other looks. That doesn’t mean you can’t play around with the Looks during the night, if street lighting is annoyingly yellow you can use Cool/Blue60 +A to introduce some cool gray into the mix. And with the mention of other color profiles this brings us to the most important and the biggest feature of Cinema Pro, the Looks section.
LOOKS + TEMPERATURE + A/B + G/M Adjustments
This alone is the biggest deal in Cinema Pro app and this alone is what most of the users have no idea how to tweak and manipulate. If you thought rack focus is the number one feature in Cinema Pro, well I can assure you it’s number two right after this super flexible image manipulation output. Before we start discussing looks you have to keep in mind there is one factor in equation here and that’s Whitebalance. Most of the users stick with VENICE CS and don’t use any other look because by default all the looks are in your face when left in Auto whitebalance mode. Even less users who default to VENICE CS fiddle with whitebalance to unlock the full potential of image looks manipulation. Before you start playing with the looks you have to go to yellow hamburger menu and ~change WB MODE to TEMPERATURE~ instead of Preset.
With Temperature mode turned on you now have the option to set desired temperature in kelvins as well as to play with A/B and G/M sliders. What those sliders do? AB slider stands for Amber and Blue but names are inverted on axis so B will be to the left and A to the right. You can actually go quite wild with AB as our eyes are a lot less sensitive to warm and cold adjustments. GM slider stands for Green and Magenta and axis works just as the letters, green to the left and magenta to the right. GB sliders requires quite slight nudges in both directions because our eyes perceive color tilt very aggressively. You might want to use GB slider to adjust for human skin or just go artistic on a certain look.
You might ask yourself what the difference between setting up temperature and pushing AB sliders and I could tell you the order it needs to be done to make a proper impact on the picked Look.
1. You always adjust Temperature first. Between 4700K and 5500K is considered daylight in Cinema Pro (forget 6500K as you will crush it with amber). That’s at least how my eyes perceive it. If you pick lets say Strong/Blue100 look you will want to go to 7000K to neutralize it and then add some of A to make it shift from cold to warm look. Oh yeah it’s possible, so suddenly you just changed the bluest of the blue looks into yellow look.
2. Now you fiddle with AB/GM sliders for finer adjustments. AB will have more of an impact if you stick between 4700K-5500K but if you go below or over those Kelvins AB slider will get weaker. GM slider on the other hand will stay powerful and affect any highlight there is in an image.
3. Combine these two to completely alter any Look you pick.
*In order to follow the Looks description and how you could manipulate them, I will provide the links with video samples down below so you could watch them while reading the rest of the post.
WATCH 4K separate clips in order as described
WATCH 4K all the clips combined into one movie file following the order of description
(all files are in Rec2020 + eotf gamma 2.4 for better color representation but stripped of HDR)
Shot setup consists of warm neutral headphones, white coffee cup, glass of water to see highlights behavior and ugly yellow table and green trees. It's a shame I forgot to put red pack of cigarettes or something as reds are crazy different depending on the look you choose.
Soft/Yellow40 gain req: high contrast: lowest texture: softest grade: non-unifying offset: medium hdr: bright
This is the very interesting one and when combined with the right scene it can look marvelous. Soft look is your Orange & Teal go to look pretty much. It’s not very obvious but it’s not subtle either. One of the major traits of this look is really the softer image, not as sharp as let’s say Bright but because of that it mitigates artifacts quite nicely. Keep in mind that this look requires quite a gain so you will be boosting ISO until you reach the 0 in almost every situation. But because this looks require lots of additional stops it’s very grateful for bright environments. It has medium contrast but it can propel highlights quite high, things like neon signs look like glowing neon signs so it has a strong HDR effect which can clip easy. It doesn’t have unifying image trait, so if you are into color graded look this one will not offer that. That’s kind of a given considering it’s balancing out between orange and teal. If you want to unify it then your best bet is to shift it toward cool temperature or push A slider all the way to the left while introducing some magenta with M slider to the right. Soft/Yellow60 can’t completely switch from all blue to all yellow so it’s altering offset limit is medium.
Auto WB look for Soft/Yellow40 is quite decent but if you have some yellow patches, they will pick up some green tint. To remedy that just add some M like 1.x and add splash of Amber like 1.5 to 3 to be sure. If you want to cool down the image just drop Kelvins down or go crazy with B slider. On the other hand if you want to neutralize to get as close to white as possible you will need to add M1.5 or more together with cooler Kelvins. If you are shooting neutrals with this Look make sure you kill green cause it will overtake the whole image.
Where this Look kicks some major but is in a scene where you have brown wood veneer and blue/teal walls or panels. You will get an awesome O&T look out of it.

Opaque/Blue20/Yellow60 gain req: medium contrast: medium texture: sharp grade: unifying offset: medium hdr: medium
Another one that gets overlooked due to poor AUTO WB looks. When set to default WB it looks muddy and sepia like so most of us don’t know what to do with it. You will be shocked now if I tell you this should be your 2nd go to Look right after Bright. Yup, VENICE CS is not even in top two and I will elaborate why when we get to it. One thing to know in order to use this look you need to modify it from the get go. You need to kill that yellow and boost ISO for a stop or stop and half compared to Bright.
Opaque is great for skintones as they are easily adjusted with AB/GM sliders. Image is very creamy despite having enough clarity and medium contrast. If you underexpose you get some deeper contrast without ruining the creamy image. It’s great for shooting outdoor people gatherings, landscapes on a mute and cloudy day or any outdoor activity. Indoor is kind of tricky due to tungsten lighting but manageable although its not as appetizing as outdoor shots. Keep in mind when shooting at golden hour you will need deeper adjustments to get that sepia out and get the gold in. On any other condition it’s super easy to neutralize the image, you don’t have to push temperature nor sliders too far to get it just right. HDR effect is subtle and not over the top, proper medium and saturation is quite clever despite being a sepia preset. Colors are not muted by any means unless they have some brown in them. If you are a fan of grading I could assure you Opaque has quite unifying image effect no matter if you shoot warm, neutral or cold which is great. Transforming the look to complete cold or warm is tricky as it always keep that mud/sepia yellow in highlights.
To neutralize the look at daytime all you have to do is drop the temp around 4000K or push B slider to your liking. You can always do cold temperature to kill sepia and bring back some heat by pushing A slider. If you want to shoot gold tones then keep it around 5000K and adjust A to your liking while balancing GM.
This look produces super deep and rich reds, amazing reds. And if you combine that red with something beige or sand color like you will get a match made in heaven. Filming bars with brown furnishing packed with people is a treat as well. Shooting at night time in street lights is also a treat for this look.

Cool/Blue60 gain req: med to hi contrast: medium texture: sharp grade: very unifying offset: low hdr: medium
In a nutshell this is a faux bleach bypass or silver look if adjusted right. Together with Soft this has to be the most creative usage look offered. Unlike Soft this one is very easy to setup and results are sharp. At the first glance users might be confused what’s the difference between this one and Strong/BU100 as both look quite similar in Auto WB mode. But once you go out of auto look and start adjusting it soon you figure out that Cool/BU60 look has no vibrance and that’s what makes all the difference compared to all other looks. Gain adjustment to get to 0 is only like 1 stop compared to Bright or VENICE CS. Clarity is right on the par with others and contrast at proper sweet spot. HDR effect is tad bit mute but not by much and it works. And now if you ever wanted a look that makes the whole image like its graded as a whole, look no further (pun intended) than this one.
If you pay close attention, you can tell from the get go that this has silver look to it but it just needs to be released. Those familiar with bleach bypass look will know exactly what to expect from this one. If left in Auto WB you will get nothing but as soon as you dial A slider in more than a half you are waking it up slowly. If you want to get rid of the major blue cast you want to push temperature to 7000K and adjust sliders to your liking. If you drop the exposure, you will get that dramatic film look. Again, this look is quite easy to work with but it’s not flexible, don’t expect major transformations on the other end. It’s a one trick pony and it does that very well.
The best-case scenario for Cool is street photography with lots of metal on it. Cars, machines and silver or gray stuff blend in while human skin remain distinguishable. Interior shots are also great if you have to render a cold, clinical environment like office or a hospital or police station. It’s also your go to look if you want to make anticipation in the video.

Strong/Blue100 gain req: high contrast: low texture: soft grade: very unifying offset: highest hdr: bright
Turn day into a night and night into dusk. This is the most flexible look as it can get from one spectrum to the other without much casting. It’s not called strong for nothing; it really grades the whole image with a single hue. Despite being in your face it actually keeps the contrast on lower side which is very good as you can always dial it in with drop of exposure. Clipping in highlights can occur because of the nature it unifies the picture.
Because this look can go from cool to fire it can get neutral, although neutralizing it is not that simple affair as it’s with Opaque. Best way to get there is to adjust temperature. If hanging around neutral you will get image with blue cast over it. The way I see it this one is supposed to be opposite of Opaque while hitting harder. You might find some creative usage for this one if you want to go abstract and saturated. Similar to Soft look if you film contrast scene that has both cold and warm hues in it you will get that cross axis between the two and nothing in between.

Bright/Blue20/Yellow60 gain req: low contrast: highest texture: sharpest grade: non-unifying offset: low hdr: brightest
Your first go to profile when filming with Cinema Pro. It’s the closest one to Video Pro and closest one that looks like regular picture profile. If you are not looking for a creative look or any look in general this is it. It requires little to no gain adjustment which means it will not suffer from gain artifacts, it has the highest contrast and sharpest details for that mainstream image look (I do not count N/A as picture profile). But right now, there is a huge flaw that has to be addressed with this profile; it can’t capture pure reds no matter what. All reds are burgundy or violet unfortunately. But it nails down blues and teals like a pro.
On the other side it is super easy to balance out the image, its super easy to shift it to warm, cold, green or magenta. There is a quite big of a spread in temperature before image gets painted blue or yellow. It requires small nudges and results are visible right away. It plays well with the skin tones, no issues there. Where it excels is the HDR highlights. This profile kills it when there is shimmer in the view, metallics and all kinds of crazy and contrast stuff. HDR effect is exaggerated and it looks so oomph on a TV. Bright also nails down auto wb from the box so you can set it to auto and forget about it. Overall, it’s easiest to work with and sunny outdoors are a treat for the eyes. Usage of this profile equals that of Video Pro so you can use it anywhere you like. Video Pro is the direct competitor to this Look and while Video Pro can do saturated reds Bright/BU20/YE60 has a tad bit more organic feel despite being quite similar.
This is general purpose Look and being like that it doesn’t offer color grading effect nor it has any offset abilities of color transformation (unless you go completely blue 3200K or completely yellow 7500K).

VENICE CS gain req: low contrast: high texture: sharp grade: non-unifying offset: low hdr: bright
Default look and the one that’s most talked about and the one that most people use. First of all the look itself is fine but it is rather limited. It has nothing to do with Venice color science but it doesn’t have to honestly. It emulates log like image but without any flexibility of the log. It has very low ISO requirements and it’s the brightest look out of them all. Like mentioned above that makes it a go to look for low light shots. All other aspects of this look are almost on par with Bright look so I think these two go hand in hand when you want to lay off saturation and dial down blacks. In other words, don’t try to bring in VENICE CS footage into post to try to bring back vividness. It doesn’t work but that’s why there is Bright look for stuff like that. Unlike Bright look VENICE CS can capture red colors properly.
If you want to shoot haze, mist and other soft scenes VENICE CS is a dream. If you generally want to shoot relaxing stuff VENICE CS is the one to go for. Just don’t treat it as a log footage but rather as a looks footage. HDR is bright enough and it contains highlights really good. When it comes to exposure its quite flexible so margin of error is low.

Warm/Yellow80 gain req: medium contrast: high texture: sharp grade: most-unifying offset: lowest hdr: medium
This is supposed to be opposite of Cool, at least in theory. In reality we have a huge cast of orange and brown all over the screen. It’s really strong color cast and you can only manipulate it do a certain degree. It doesn’t require high ISO, it has deep contrast, good clarity and it contains highlights in HDR. On the artistic department there is vey little you can do with this. Cast is like three times stronger sepia of Opaque look. The only use case I found is when you want to turn something into golden look. Just like how Cool is silver look Warm is supposed to be gold look. But again, to my eyes it aligns more to Opaque deeper side than actual warm/gold. Shooting some neutral-colored scenery and cooling down the temperature below 4000K might give some artistic effect. This is a very limited look to play with.
There is nothing to say about N/A and Soft Monochrome except that you should never shoot in N/A it’s just horrible and if you want BW video you at least have an option.

So conclusion, Cinema Pro besides all of its shortcomings and some are pretty serious, has few features of brilliance that were never ever seen in any camera app third-party or OEM before and most likely we will never see those features again. Sony’s biggest sin with Cinema Pro is not omission of features but rather NOT improving up on what’s already in there. They just let it rot. I guess at one moment at it’s inception Cinema Pro had a great roadmap where it should go but then new management came in and shifted focus from cinema video to photography and v-logging.
Cinema Pro is dead, long live Cinema Pro. Go ahead and make some projects with it.

Classic Never Goes Away II
A rather dreary, bleary, and all round grim day, but that doesn’t stop a man from exploring the local jaunts and haunts. As such, it was off west to observe a palace and its surrounding grounds.
I happened upon cats, ducks, and fruits mere weeks away from the local market. All in all, it was rather a fun experience.
To make it even better, I thought to build a preppy ensemble in preparation for the winds and rain for your entertainment.
Coat: Polo Ralph Lauren
I simply can’t get enough of madras. Such a classic prep pattern and it was put together with such care by the good folks at Ralph Lauren. For quite some time, I was in two minds about this coat. Do I keep it? Do I sell it? Today was the maiden voyage and I’ve decided it’s a keeper. Even better that it’s 100% Cotton.
Blazer: Ermenegildo Zegna
The Navy blazer is a classic staple. Heck, there’s even a whole subreddit dedicated to it. This example is a travel cloth which is brilliant for summer due to its light weight and ability to bounce back from creasing. Even better that it’s fully canvassed. ‘Twas also a candidate for sale, but I pulled it out, tried it on again, and said, ‘Yeah.’
Funnily enough, the button popped clean off after taking the first photo. I heard it clang on the ground. But not to worry, re-attached with a linen thread and it won’t be going anywhere any time soon. Perhaps I’ll convert all of them to brass in time.
Chinos: Polo Ralph Lauren
The classic Ralph chinos are always a brilliant choice. Wide leg, pleats, thick cotton with a brilliant hang. Just as chinos were meant to be. If you’re searching, keep an eye out for ‘Andrew’ and ‘Suffield’. They’re the best ones, but I don’t think they make them anymore.
Shirt: Eton
Never had much experience with this brand, but I’ve come to the conclusion that their shirts are solid. I wouldn’t pay retail for them, but if you can thrift it, go for it. Seen here in a lovely white, blue, and navy grid. Just some additional visual intrigue.
Vest: Polo Ralph Lauren
Still one of the best in the game when it comes to the art of the vest. Pure cotton here and as such, the moths can dream on.
Tie: Vintage St. Michael
Well, you have to pull it all together with something. Bring in the navy of the blazer, the red of the glasses, the yellow on the vest, and the cream/beige of the trousers.
Watch: Longines Hydroconquest 43mm Automatic Sunray Blue
Love this piece. Can never go wrong with an auto diver. Such a versatile style of sports watch that can fit so many outfits and settings.
Shoes: Crockett & Jones
Keep it English and you won’t regret it, but if you stray then I’ll have to say, ‘Nay!’ Single monk. Supremely comfortable and versatile. So easy to dress up or down.
Socks: Pantherella
Knee high, boyo. As it should be. Socks falling down? Never me.
Glasses: Cubitts
Love this brand. Pretty funky, pretty 70s, pretty cool. Acetate frames as they were meant to be.
Hat: Bates
Can’t go wrong with a black and white houndstooth in pure wool. Kept the noggin warm as the wind and rain came with a fury at various points of the day.
And after all that, what else can I say? Simply put: Classic Never Goes Away

2024.05.31 16:10 cooked_vegetables Some women literally throw themselves at you on SR

I got a random call the other day from a woman that I have known for a while. She is quite attractive and has had multiple simp boyfriends in the past that she claimed to love. As many of us know all too well though, it always ends badly for the simp because innate female programming will eventually kick in, chew the simp up, and spit him out. Unfortunately, this has been the pattern for each of her former boyfriends. Anyhow, this rather attractive lady calls me out of the blue and starts babbling on about a bunch of irrelevant things just to keep me on the phone. She was also heavily hinting that she was tired of living in her current location and would like to live nearer to me without directly saying it. Mind you, I'm currently a 4 hour flight away from her. I just played dumb for the rest of the call like I didn't understand what she was hinting at. I stayed kind and calm for the entire call, but made an excuse as soon as I could and ducked out of the call.
The next day while I was at work, she sends me a text message saying how she really wished I would pursue her romantically and couldn't understand why I hadn't tried to do anything sexually with her over the years we had known each other. I was absolutely shocked to be honest... no woman has ever been that direct with me before. I simply responded with a text of my own saying "Sons of God DO NOT chase women, because that is the opposite of the natural order of things." She kept badgering me over text asking how I had gone about letting women know that I was interested in them in the past if I didn't chase them. That is when it hit me... I actually haven't approached any woman with genuine interest in them over the last 4 years since I started retaining. I realized through that question, that the usual male to female dynamic has flipped in my life since retention. I don't approach women anymore... rather they seem to clumsily throw themselves at me. It is really weird.
I know a lot of us report female attraction due to SR, but has anyone else experienced this level of boldness from a woman before? They will literally call you and rat themselves out, they will walk right in your path when you are the grocery store, they will stand way too close to you for no reason at all. This is crazy! I mean, this shit is so creepy what in the actual bleep LOL.
Anyhow, Godspeed and remain blessed brothers.

2024.05.31 15:53 Sherlock-ACD New Era in the NFL - Seahawk’s new head coach & his defensive philosophy

If you take Football Strategy seriously this is a must read, especially for D coordinators.
As a Seahawks fan I’m sad to see Pete go but excited for the new era of MacDonald.
NYT has a new article describing his defensive philosophy with some good specifics. I’ve copied to text to avoid the paywall:
A defensive philosophical shift is happening in the NFL, and new Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is at the heart of it. The league transitioned a few years ago from the Seattle Cover 3 era into the Vic Fangio shell defense era, focused on stopping explosive plays. Like those from Pete Carroll’s coaching tree, most who branched out from Fangio’s tree mostly struggled to replicate his system. However, Fangio’s overarching philosophy of keeping a lid on top of offenses succeeded in permeating the league, and its emphasis on cutting down explosive plays is a reason scoring has trended downward in the past couple of seasons. However, not every coach wanted to sit back and just play coverage. Former Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale went against the grain and continued to blitz as much as possible. That style saw success in Baltimore, but head coach John Harbaugh eventually wanted a more balanced, flexible attack, so he replaced Martindale with his former protege Mike Macdonald in 2022. His impact was felt immediately, and last season, the Ravens ranked first in nearly every major statistical category including DVOA. The Seahawks’ hired him to be their head coach this offseason, while his defensive line coach Zach Orr was promoted to Ravens defensive coordinator, and three other assistants got coordinator jobs elsewhere (Anthony Weaver, Dolphins; Dennard Wilson, Titans; Jesse Minter, Chargers). That means five teams this season will be running the Macdonald system — so what is that system? The Sean McVay of defense Macdonald isn’t doing anything particularly unique schematically. He learned many of his blitzes and pressures from Martindale, whom he coached under from 2018-2021, except Martindale mostly used single-high safety defenses, and Macdonald calls a lot of two-deep defenses. There are some similarities to the Fangio system on early downs. The Ravens showed a lot of two-deep safeties before rotating into their coverages to disguise. Macdonald is aggressive, but he actually doesn’t bring more than four rushers much. The Ravens have ranked 22nd in blitz percentage (13.7 percent) since 2022. Macdonald pressures offenses with the illusion of multiplicity and simulated pressures (four-man rushes with one or more rushers coming from the second or third level with one or two defensive linemen dropping into coverage).
When he does blitz, offenses usually have no idea where the pressure is coming from because his defenses can present so many different looks from week to week. The Ravens were so multiple because of the unique way Macdonald teaches and structures his pressure packages. “What the Ravens have done so well is they pressure in so many ways that you can’t get a bead on them,” former NFL center A.Q. Shipley told The Athletic. “The other thing that’s great about them is you might watch them one week against Pittsburgh and it looks completely different against Cleveland, so it’s tough, too, because you’ve got to make so many in-game adjustments.” One of the reasons the Ravens could present so many different looks for offenses to deal with is how Macdonald teaches his pressure packages. Many defenses teach their fronts (where the defensive line and linebackers line up) with their blitzes. This approach makes sense because defenders have to know where to line up, what their assignments are and how to get to their assignments.
For example, on this page from the Seahawks’ 2012 defensive playbook, the staff taught this particular pressure from their “tuff” front. Tuff tells the defensive line that they’ll have four defensive linemen and two linebackers on the line with the Mike linebacker and free safety on the second level. When the defense gets the call, they know that both outside backers are rushing and every defensive lineman is running a stunt. Instead of learning pressures attached to fronts, Macdonald teaches his players pressure patterns so they know each other’s jobs and how to execute different pressures from different fronts. This approach isn’t particularly unique to Macdonald. Some coaches teach some of their pressures this way but Macdonald completely leans into it to ensure his system is as flexible and easy to learn as possible. Then he can easily mix fronts and pressures and add layers to them. The Ravens don’t deploy a ton of different fronts and pressures, but they have endless ways of changing the presentation for offenses. Essentially, he’s taking Sean McVay’s philosophy of making everything look the same until it isn’t but applying it to his pressure packages.
What’s in a name? Another important feature of Macdonald’s system is purposeful nomenclature for each pressure. Though using nomenclature seems like a simple tool, the language of football — even at the highest level — can be confusing with terminology drawn from different systems and eras that have nothing to do with each other. Macdonald has a naming system for his pressures that makes it easier for players to learn and recall. For example, the defense could have 10 ways to run a simulated pressure with one player blitzing from the strong side and the weak end dropping into coverage. Each of those pressures is siloed together. Hypothetically, those types of simulated pressures could be named after NBA teams, so if players hear an NBA team name, they know what pressure they are running. The first letter of the name could be where it’s coming from, and from there, they can figure out everyone else’s job. For example, “Suns” can tell the defense that the safety is blitzing from the strong side, while the end from the weak side is dropping. The defense can run “Suns” from multiple fronts without teaching an entirely new blitz. Also, by understanding the entire pressure pattern or call because of the name rather than just their individual jobs, they know what everyone else is doing, which makes it easier to switch positions when they want to add confusion for offenses. “He’s doing a unique job. … I’ve kind of never experienced it,” Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey said at minicamp during Macdonald’s first season as defensive coordinator. “He’s really having everybody understand the whole philosophy of mainly just the group of coverages, as opposed to: ‘You got this call. How do you play this call?’ He’s kind of saying, grouping these calls all together, like, ‘What is the whole idea of this call?’ So I think he’s done a really good job of kind of really helping us all be smarter, to where I know what the D-line’s doing. I also know what the linebacker is doing. I also know what the safety’s doing — because ‘The reason why I call this defense is because of this.'”

2024.05.31 13:48 efmgold107 The Bakuhatsu Clan: Masters of Explosive Cursed Energy

"From the embers of adversity, we rise as an unstoppable force, igniting the world with our power."

History in the Jujutsu World

The Bakuhatsu Clan, whose name translates to "Explosion Clan," is one of the lesser-known yet highly respected families in the Jujutsu world. Their lineage dates back several centuries, with their origins fairly unknown. Legend has it that the clan's founder, Bakuhatsu no Kaito, was a rogue sorcerer who discovered the art of manipulating explosive forces through rigorous experimentation with cursed energy.
Initially, the Bakuhatsu Clan was ostracized by mainstream Jujutsu society due to the inherently destructive nature of their techniques. However, over time, their incredible prowess in battle and their ability to turn the tide of combat situations earned them a grudging respect. Their explosive techniques proved invaluable during numerous conflicts with powerful curses and rival sorcerer factions.

Culture and Traditions

The Bakuhatsu Clan's culture is deeply intertwined with the concept of controlled destruction. From a young age, clan members are taught the importance of discipline and restraint, as their abilities can easily cause collateral damage if not properly managed. This has led to a culture of intense training and rigorous self-control.
  1. Rite of the First Cut: At the age of 10, every clan member undergoes the Rite of the First Cut. This ritual involves creating their first controlled explosive wound, symbolizing their commitment to harnessing their explosive power. It is a sacred ceremony that marks the transition from childhood to becoming a novice sorcerer.
  2. Explosion Festivals: To celebrate their heritage, the Bakuhatsu Clan holds annual Explosion Festivals, where members demonstrate their control over Explosive Cursed Energy through a series of competitive events and exhibitions. These festivals serve to strengthen clan bonds and showcase their abilities to the wider Jujutsu society.
  3. Meditation and Control: Given the destructive potential of their abilities, the Bakuhatsu Clan places great emphasis on meditation and mental discipline. Daily meditation practices are a cornerstone of their training, helping members maintain focus and prevent accidental detonations.

Hierarchy and Structure

The Bakuhatsu Clan operates under a strict hierarchical system, with the clan head, known as the Bakuhatsu no Oyabun, at the top. The Oyabun is responsible for overseeing all clan activities, making strategic decisions, and representing the clan in the Jujutsu world. Below the Oyabun are the Elders, experienced sorcerers who provide guidance and training to younger members.
Young sorcerers, known as Apprentices, undergo rigorous training under the supervision of senior clan members. Upon demonstrating sufficient control and skill, apprentices are promoted to Explosivists, full-fledged members of the clan who can take on missions and represent the clan in battles.

Key Figures

  1. Bakuhatsu no Kaito: The legendary founder of the clan, Kaito's innovative techniques laid the foundation for the clan's explosive abilities. His legacy is honored and remembered in clan lore and rituals.
  2. Bakuhatsu no Akira: The current Oyabun, Akira is known for his unparalleled mastery of Explosive Cursed Energy. He is a stern yet fair leader, dedicated to advancing the clan's reputation and ensuring the safety of its members.
  3. Bakuhatsu no Hana: A rising star among the clan's younger generation, Hana has shown exceptional talent and control over her abilities. She represents the future of the Bakuhatsu Clan and is being groomed for leadership.

Relations with Other Clans

Despite their initially rocky relationship with the broader Jujutsu society, the Bakuhatsu Clan has established alliances with several other clans. They are particularly respected for their combat support roles, where their explosive abilities can turn the tide of battle. However, their power also makes them a target for rival clans and curses, necessitating constant vigilance.

Physical Traits

  1. Eyes of the Inferno: Members of the Bakuhatsu Clan often possess eyes with irises that seem to flicker like embers or glow with an inner light, especially when they are harnessing their Explosive Cursed Energy. This unique trait, known as "Eyes of the Inferno," is a telltale sign of their lineage.
  2. Athletic Build: Due to the rigorous physical training they undergo from a young age, most clan members have a lean and athletic build. Their training emphasizes both strength and agility, resulting in a physique that combines power with speed.
  3. Battle Scars: Given the nature of their abilities, it's not uncommon for Bakuhatsu Clan members to bear scars from their training and battles. These scars are often seen as marks of honor and experience, showcasing their journey and mastery over their explosive powers.

Attire and Style

  1. Traditional Robes: The Bakuhatsu Clan's formal attire consists of traditional robes that incorporate elements of both historical Japanese and practical modern designs. These robes are often in deep shades of red, black, and gold, symbolizing fire, power, and resilience. Intricate patterns resembling flames or explosions are woven into the fabric.
  2. Protective Gear: In combat situations, clan members wear specialized protective gear that balances mobility with defense. This gear includes reinforced gauntlets, bracers, and chest armor designed to withstand the shockwaves and heat generated by their explosive techniques. The armor is crafted from lightweight, heat-resistant materials to ensure maximum protection without hindering movement.
  3. Hair Styles: Hairstyles among the Bakuhatsu Clan are diverse, but many members prefer practical styles that keep hair out of the way during combat. Common choices include short cuts, topknots, and braids. Some members also incorporate accessories like hairpins or bands with clan insignia or flame motifs.
  4. Clan Insignia: The clan insignia, a stylized explosion or a flaming star, is prominently displayed on their attire and accessories. It serves as a symbol of their heritage and a warning to others of their formidable abilities.
  5. Tattoos and Body Art: Many clan members choose to adorn their bodies with tattoos and body art that depict flames, explosions, and other symbols of their power. These tattoos are often seen as a rite of passage and are applied during significant milestones in their training and career as sorcerers.

Personal Items

  1. Explosive Orbs: Many members carry small orbs filled with condensed explosive energy as both a weapon and a tool for training. These orbs are used to practice control and precision in their explosive techniques.
  2. Meditation Beads: Given the emphasis on meditation and mental discipline, clan members often carry beads made from volcanic rock or other materials associated with fire and heat. These beads are used during meditation sessions to focus their minds and channel their energy.
  3. Flame Amulets: As a symbol of protection and power, many Bakuhatsu Clan members wear amulets shaped like flames or explosions. These amulets are believed to enhance their connection to their explosive abilities and provide a sense of grounding and focus.
