My husband (42M) and I (41F) are both Michigan natives. We live in Lansing. I've lived here all my life and he is from TC. We plan to retire to the Soo area. Every year we celebrate our anniversary (end of March) in the UP. Last year we stayed in Sault Ste Marie and the year before we stayed in St. Ignace. Because this is our long vacation for the year we always want it to be well planned.
We're the kind of people that will make a list of things we wanna do but not plan a specific day. We plan on being up north March 20th-28th, and will probably have 3-4 thing we absolutely must do, but other than that we like to just relax and enjoy us time and no work. So my question is what cities do you recommend? We'd like to be in a county setting (hence why we love the UP) but about 10 minutes from a city with a grocery store, gas station and restaurants or fast food.

As an aside, I got an incredibly much needed laugh when I saw my firefox thumbnail for this tab labeled as "lgbt:submit". That's hilarious.
I had a few posts on here before, but TLDR; I met someone online (asexual nonbinary dfab who I've emotionally supported getting the meds they need to be more androgynous) who not only helped force open my perception of all things gender related, but also opened up my heart. I eventually asked them out, but they shot me down.... because I'm too masculine.
A few months ago, I got to have another vacation where I got to spend time with this friend, and at one point, I presented the idea: "would you have dated me, if in another world or life time, I could have been your girlfriend?" They gave the correct answer of "you should make that decision for yourself, not for other people". But it certainly got us talking about my gender identity, and apparently "subtle" hints and flags I've apparently been giving off for years.
I have mixed feelings about transitioning. Not on other people; I will FOREVER be an Ally, because Justice shouldn't have asterisks or exceptions. Do no Evil and let people live their lives if they aren't hurting anyone else. And I've seen how effective it can be on folk. Even when I assumed I was 100% straight, I've seen transgirls who absolutely peek my interest. I'm glad science has progressed enough to allow people to push towards living however they want to. Again, I've been supporting my friend in that matter from the bottom of my heart.
On me, I'm very anxious of the idea. I've always been judged on "not being right".
I'm not honest or trust-able enough, while also being too open and forward. I'm not "black" enough while also having faced discrimination for it. I'm not "white" enough despite being raised by the boogie-st white mother possible. (I see myself as multiracial/mixed, with a White-Irish Birthmom, and a Nigerian-French Birthdad). I'm not traditional enough in my views to count as faithful to my religion, despite also defining that as part of who I am. I've always been teased for not being manly enough or being too sensitive... and yet for the first time, seeing myself as a male has finally been something else I don't fit right, either.
So transitioning without it being as "instant"/"complete" as it is in fiction (where a single pill or shot, or outright magic, can complete the change either way overnight, if not instantly), I'm not sure about the idea of giving it a try and "not being enough of a girl", even with estrogen and bottom surgery. Even if I had the support of someone I'd love to spend the rest of my life with, it's still pretty daunting.
...at least when awake and actively thinking about it.
Apparently, I've made comments for years, if not maybe even over decades, that have made my friends question my sexuality and gender.
-discomfort with my body and fitness, and not feeling attractive enough as a man (as well as wondering if my legs and butt can be attractive in ways I didn't think I was supposed to have them be)
-Preferring to play as Female Characters in Video Games.
-Having a wish to be reborn as a girl, for all the fun options in regards to nerd things that I don't have the balls (haha) to do as a boy. Cosplays and jokes and what not. -On that note, being somewhat jealous that it feels like there are more cosplay options for girls in regards to characters and crossplaying than for guys. (as a guy, for example, I could only be Ganondorf. As a girl, I could probably still pull off Ganondorf, or also be sexy-femme Ganondorf too.)
-imagining myself in said alternate life, as the buff yet curvy amazonian friend/girlfriend to my dream twinky nerdy partner
-joking that the two of us could just switch bodies and make both of us happier (apparently it's easier to access Estrogen than Testosterone, so making me girlier would be easier than them trying to even themselves out)
-having spent years roleplaying online as my own younger sister, enjoying presenting as the opposite gender
-having tried on my sister's bra in middle school (which gave another reason to change for gym in the bathroom, away from the other boys and bullies) because I was uncomfortable with how my fat and chest were feeling
-being bullied for being a sissy and sensitive and a f** and all that, even when I was trying to be a boy (if still nerdy as heck).
-many of my roleplay characters being girls, some of them I've had more fun with than the non-girls (particularly when romance is involved, though I'm a sucker for romance anyway), and being significantly open to non-heterosexual relationships in my roleplay in the past few years
-saying that if I could just be completely body-swapped with like a week of time at most into my dream figure, I'd do it in an instant
-being torn on the idea of bottom surgery unless it was complete, because I'd want the option of being able to have kids one way or another, even if I currently don't want any, and science isn't quite there yet, even with how far it has progressed.
-thinking that if I were in better shape (or a better body) a cute crop top jacket to show off abs sounds unironically neat, and imagining other things I could wear if I didn't have this body.
-joking about how I'd have had more fun when I used to be a sign-spinnedancer, and could have been a waitress rather than a frycook, when I was starting out my jobs...
-I didn't realize it until I started looking back, but there had also been a lot of manga and comics and such involving trans media that I had been following for years, largely M2F.
-it's probably some sort of sexuality flag that I find femme characters or versions of me still willing to be involved with girls or boys, as well as becoming a bit more open about being willing to fall in love with anyone if they're cute and nerdy, at least hypothetically, even if I have a preference for girls. In trying to shake off family values that I find are heavily outdated, I imagined supporting my friend if they became so non-femme their sex also changed... and I might have fantasized about still being with them in that way too.
Is it possible to have all those thoughts rattling around in the back of my head for years (even if magnified when I spend so much time talking with someone very versed in gender related matters) and still be just Cishet?

Hello Normally I’d scour across the internet for recent reviews of different cruise ships and routes but sometimes fall short. I’d love to get into every fine detail about this recent trip from May 10-17 but I feel like I’d be endless.
Quick background about myself, I’m in my 20’s and this is the second cruise I’ve gone on with NCL. First one was with the Sun to Bahamas back in 2019 which was honestly one of the few vacations that I consider very memorable.
This particular cruise started in Boston, a day at sea, 3 days in Bermuda, another day at sea, 8 hours in Bar Harbor and finally back to the Boston port. Total of 7 days.
We arrived at the port around 12pm so the traffic wasn’t super bad but all I can say is people need to watch out or you won’t even make it onto the boat to begin with haha. Port workers were lovely and were dancing to get the mood going, even the cops were getting into it. Security was fast, same with check in. Coming onto the boat we were greeted with 2 employees who directed us to the atrium where 2 other employees showed us how to put on life jackets and took our info. Apparently we didn’t have to go to our muster station since she showed us how to put the life jackets on and where to go, made it even easier to just start the cruise without worrying about anything else which I didn’t know was possible.
We got 2 drinks but was not told about paying state tax on them, no issue since it was just $3. At this point it was 1:30pm and we decided to get to our floor with the idea our room was ready (I know please don’t make fun of me). It was a family inside stateroom for the 4 of us. Obviously it wasn’t ready but they allowed us to put our bags into the room. Rest of the day was just full of activities and a whole lot of drinking.
First day at sea was just more activities and getting to know our cruise activities director who was literally everywhere and very friendly, she definitely is in her element and loves what she does.
The 3 days in Bermuda were good. I wish there were more ferry’s that took you from the ship to St. George, especially later ones but you can always take taxis or mini buses. I’ve taken both and have the impression that they do not like each other at all however taking taxis were definitely cheaper. I read enough reviews about Bermuda to know how expensive it can get and while it is true, I’m fortunate enough to be financially comfortable where I can spend quite a bit each day I was there without having to worry about the cost of it. Looking over my receipts today definitely made my eyebrows go up because with on-island excursions, taxis, rentals, food and souvenirs all 3 days came out to over 1.5k+ but it was definitely worth it to me. Great island and surprisingly very safe. Met locals and went to not so popular areas to get away from the crowds and it was worth it as well. I did get a moped and while it was my first time riding, it was easier to simply just ride than to think about what if I fell haha.
Tons of activities on board during the 3 days.
Next day at sea was full of activities and shows, which were great.
Maine was our next stop and imo it was beautiful but not much to do. Tours booked up immediately and we simply walked, shopped, and ate at the local restaurants which were great. Jordans on Cottage St. was good, as well as Galyns on Main St..
Arrival to Boston was definitely the worst part of the cruise since it felt like there was no A/C onboard and organization was a nightmare.
Now… I have a few points to make.
Food was mediocre. Not bad but not good. Only the specialty restaurants were pretty decent.
Casino was full of degens haha. Jokes aside, I have never been in a small casino where more than half of the people were smoking cigarettes, made the place a bit unbearable at times.
The dance show followed by the crew appreciation speech was definitely one of the highlights of this trip. I’ve been to big shows in Las Vegas, New York, France, and others but this shows production blew it all out of the water, especially it being on a literal cruise. Beyond amazing and want me to be honest? Seeing the crew on stage who keeps the ship together everyone in my group a bit emotional. Seeing the people I’ve had conversations with throughout the trip and getting to know them as well makes the speech more touching. The crew definitely work well together and I love them.
The older folks (60+)were very and I mean very critical of the food and liquor. I’d hear complaining basically 24/7 from the older crowds but not so much of the younger ones. Honesty I saw more complaining how the sports Channel was playing boring sports and not the Bruin games against Florida haha. When it was played at the sports bar it was packed, basically every public tv screen all around the ship had at least 20 people around it. It was loud, lots of cussing, and the Boston accents were HEAVY. I loved it.
It was a good cruise and having 4 people in the small inside stateroom was cramped but did not get hot at all. I normally go for a balcony but this trip was with in-laws who needed assistance and we booked very last minute so balcony wasn’t an option.
All in all I give this trip a 8/10. Even though the buffet and other food was mediocre, the vibe was always there throughout the ship during the full 7 days.

Weds: Got in late afternoon, quiet night. Sidney’s for a muffuletta (goooood LORD it was incredible) and some PBR tallboys. Hit Cafe Du Monde. Lined up then realised near the front of the queue it was cash only. Got back to hotel, forgot I had cash all along. Blame the lack of sleep. Astros radio on the balcony, early night.
Thurs: Louisiana Music Factory, Jackson Square, Quarter wanderin’. Canal streetcar to Jackson and walk thru Garden District to Magazine St. Slow Down was a highlight. Antique Mall is cool too. Rum House was good for AC and a few Abita. Coop’s for dinner (crawfish and shrimp etouffe - some said their etouffe not the best in town but it damn well hit the spot). Frenchmen Street. Spotted Cat was a favourite. Safe and easy walk back down Royal. All That Jazz from Verti Mart damn nearly made me cry it was so good. Sixer of Coors Light and made it back just before shit got wild.
Fri: Cafe Beignet so as to skip the Cafe Du Monde lines. Chocolate drizzled beignets did the trick. Bottle of rum for home and a muffuletta from Sidney’s for today’s Amtrak ride. Canal streetcar to City Park. Liuzza’s by the Track for a BBQ shrimp poboy 🔥Walked down to Bayou Boogaloo fest. Saw Dave Jordan. Saw George Porter Jr (an original Meter playing Cissy Strut, that’s bucket list stuff). Streetcar back and walk up Royal before the rain.

My wife and I are looking for a piece of land that we can purchase now, and build on in 5-7 years to start our retirement. USVI is attractive because we're US citizens, and the weather seems amazing. We will of course come to visit for extended periods before deciding this, but when comparing USVI (St Croix) to other potential tropical locations, what should we know?
One idea is to build a "tiny home" which would potentially be prebuilt. But I'm not sure if this is possible considering storm survivability of a home without a concrete foundation. Has anyone done such a thing with success?
Any problems with purchasing land and holding it for several years before building?
What are the challenges with utilities? I see mentions of cisterns, but I'm not clear if it's common to replenish via rainwater, or if there are folks who have wells and/or desalination setups.
Is gas or propane available and relatively affordable?
I may do some remote consulting while there, which mainly consists of using a laptop and monitor. Is this a reasonable expectation, if I supplement with solar and battery backups?
If I need to ship some large test equipment (think mini-fridge size) is that going to bankrupt me?

They're called state-integrated schools and they mostly meet the charter school metric but without the snazzy new label. We've always had them; we picked up about a dozen or so of them the last time the charter school programme closed down, but the vast majority of them like Rudolf Steiner, Villa Maria, Elim Christian College, etc. predated that and have been around since the 80s or so.
Did you know you can see EXACTLY how much we're paying these semi-private schools?
It's a big spreadsheet, so let's take a look.
At Villa Maria in 2022, for example. Villa Maria got almost 8 million dollars in operational and salary funding. It has a roll of about 800 students and their funding is broken down like this:

Now let's take a look at a normal school, just down the road. Kaiapoi High School is a wee bit bigger with nearly 1000 students, and its funding looks like this:

I unfortunately picked the year they decided to rebuild the entire school apparently, and if you live in the area you'll probably know why it needed it, as it got a sweet $13 mil for property in 2022, which integrated schools won't get. But in the previous year it received $50,000 -- it's very common for this number to fluctuate hugely.
Other than that lump sum, it's pretty close, right?
If you check out the list, you'll probably recognise many of these integrated schools: Sacred Heart, Marists, Betheleham, Rudolf Steiner, St Bernards, St Patricks, St Marys, St Bedes -- a lot of saints, really. These are prestigious schools, could be mistaken for private schools even, and parents are paying a bit extra for this. And it really is just a bit, in some cases. Villa Maria charges $7,000 per year in fees, but it costs less than $2000 a year for a kid to go to St Bedes (and that's without the multi-kid discount that you get if you breed them quickly enough like it's a gacha game).
Some of these numbers are pretty interesting, tbh. I'd love to know how Rudolf Steiner is getting sometimes over $5k in funding per student for multiple year levels while most state schools sit at only about 2k and rarely deviate. There are semi-private schools getting more state funding per child than state schools. That seems weird.
Anyway... why do we need charter schools again?

Did you know you can see EXACTLY how much we're paying these semi-private schools?
It's a big spreadsheet, so let's take a look.
At Villa Maria in 2022, for example. Villa Maria got almost 8 million dollars in operational and salary funding. It has a roll of about 800 students and their funding is broken down like this:

Now let's take a look at a normal school, just down the road. Kaiapoi High School is a wee bit bigger with nearly 1000 students, and its funding looks like this:

I unfortunately picked the year they decided to rebuild the entire school apparently, and if you live in the area you'll probably know why it needed it, as it got a sweet $13 mil for property in 2022, which integrated schools won't get. But in the previous year it received $50,000 -- it's very common for this number to fluctuate hugely.
Other than that lump sum, it's pretty close, right?
If you check out the list, you'll probably recognise many of these integrated schools: Sacred Heart, Marists, Betheleham, Rudolf Steiner, St Bernards, St Patricks, St Marys, St Bedes -- a lot of saints, really. These are prestigious schools, could be mistaken for private schools even, and parents are paying a bit extra for this. And it really is just a bit, in some cases. Villa Maria charges $7,000 per year in fees, but it costs less than $2000 a year for a kid to go to St Bedes (and that's without the multi-kid discount that you get if you breed them quickly enough like it's a gacha game).
Some of these numbers are pretty interesting, tbh. I'd love to know how Rudolf Steiner is getting sometimes over $5k in funding per student for multiple year levels while most state schools sit at only about 2k and rarely deviate. There are semi-private schools getting more state funding per child than state schools. That seems weird.
Anyway... why do we need charter schools again?
