2024.05.21 12:01 AutoModerator Weekly book club by marmalada.org

This week's book club list is as follows (enjoy reading and comment which your favourite is below):

  1. The Lost Art of Compassion: Discovering the Practice of Happiness in the Meeting of Buddhism and Psychology by Lorne Ladner: Dr Lorne Ladner rescues compassion from this marginalised view, showing how its practical application in our life can be a powerful force in achieving happiness. Combining the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism and Western psychology, Ladner presents clear, effective practices for cultivating compassion in daily living.
  2. Choosing Happiness: Keys to a Joyful Life by Alexandra Stodda: Happiness lies in the passions we pursue and in the pressures we decline. It is in knowing how to work and when to play. It is in the treasured objects we keep nearby and in the ordinary moments we elevate into small celebrations. It is in the note we write to a friend and the kindness we show a stranger. It is in the colors we love and the music that transports us. It may be as simple as sunlight on your face; as sudden as a shared smile; as sensuous as a single flower on your desk, candles on your nightstand, or cookies hot from the oven. Happiness is what you make it, where you make it. Happiness is our best choice.
  3. Health, Wealth and Happiness: You Can Control Your Destiny by David Singh: David Singh's dramatic journey from the jungles of Guyana to the helm of one of Canada's largest financial planning companies provides the backdrop for this guide to lasting happiness. Advocating wise investments, careful planning, and healthy eating choices, this inspirational book uncovers the secrets to a happier and more successful life.
  4. What All the World's A-Seeking: Or, The Vital Law of True Life, True Greatness Power and Happiness by Ralph Waldo Trine: Ralph Waldo Trine was an influential member of the New Thought movement. He was one of the first people to write about the Law of Attraction. Long before Rhonda Byrne discovered the secret that one's positive thoughts are powerful magnets that attract wealth, health, and happiness, Trine already knew it.
  5. Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment by Martin Seligman: I have read about 80 pages and I am enjoying Seligmen's friendly, engaging writing style so far. Also, there are interesting facts about each person's 'range' of happiness being fixed on a spectrum.Great so far. Will attempt to update review when I have completed the book.
  6. Happiness Hypothesis: Putting Ancient Wisdom to the Test of Modern Science by Jonathan Haidt: Jonathon Haidt is a terrifically productive thinker about psychology. This is book is a credo and a guide book to your own happiness via an accomplished romp through the psychological literature which Haidt uses to explore the truths of ancient religion. I'm surprised it's not a wild best seller, but I think I know why - it doesn't have an singular and catchy formula for your salvation which you can learn in your lunchtime and hear about ad nauseam on late night TV infomercials. Just well written, well thought out commentary on the formula for a happy and fulfilled life distilled from the psychological literature.
  7. It's All in Your Head: Thinking Your Way to Happiness by Stephen M. Pollan, Mark Levine: If you've ever wanted to have a conversation with someone on a normal level about undoing negative thinking patterns, this book is about the closest you'll ever get in written form. The style is conversational, pragmatic, and realistic. Kind of like talking to a favorite uncle or aunt who is just "on the mark" about dealing with life. The book focuses on 8 behaviothought patterns that hinder us from being happy NOW, and provides simple, easy "exercises" to do to help overcome them. It is also one of those rare self-help books that the whole family can read, enjoy, and profit from. In my opinion, this book is better than any other I've read by Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Nathaniel Branden, and many others. If you've ever thought you can be happier, YOU CAN, and this book can help you get there.
  8. Handbook on the Economics of Happiness by Luigino Bruni, Pier Luigi Porta: This Handbook provides an unprecedented forum for discussion of the economic issues relating to happiness. It reviews the more recent literature and offers the interested reader an insight into the vast scope of the field in terms of the theory, its applications and also experimental design. The Handbook also gives substantial indications as to the future direction of research in the field, with particular regard to policy applications and developing an economics of interpersonal relations which includes reciprocity and social interaction theory.
  9. Freeing your child from negative thinking: powerful, practical strategies to build a lifetime of resilience, flexibility, and happiness by Tamar E. Chansky: This book is excellent for those who wish to embrace Food Combining i.e. what has become known as the Hay Diet. It is where one avoids mixing starch-based foods and protein-based foods in the same meal.
  10. The 7 Steps of Spiritual Intelligence: The Practical Pursuit of Purpose, Success and Happiness Volume by Richard A. Bowell: Pioneering researcher and educator Richard Bowell delivers the first and only self-help guide to the power of spiritual intelligence (SQ)-the next evolutionary stage in our pursuit of purpose, success, and happiness. He introduces the latest breakthroughs in neuro-science. Life lessons from such exceptional individuals as Nelson Mandela to Ghandi and Mother Theresa take readers on a self-guided journey to personal development and growth.

2024.05.21 11:14 SteveBolduc To every time its purpose

First Reading
Ecclesiastes 3:1-22
There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven:
A time for giving birth, a time for dying; a time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted.
A time for killing, a time for healing; a time for knocking down, a time for building.
A time for tears, a time for laughter; a time for mourning, a time for dancing.
A time for throwing stones away, a time for gathering them up; a time for embracing, a time to refrain from embracing.
A time for searching, a time for losing; a time for keeping, a time for throwing away.
A time for tearing, a time for sewing; a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.
A time for loving, a time for hating; a time for war, a time for peace.
What does a man gain for the efforts that he makes? I contemplate the task that God gives mankind to labour at. All that he does is apt for its time; but though he has permitted man to consider time in its wholeness, man cannot comprehend the work of God from beginning to end.
I know there is no happiness for man except in pleasure and enjoyment while he lives. And when man eats and drinks and finds happiness in his work, this is a gift from God.
I know that what God does he does consistently. To this nothing can be added, from this nothing taken away; yet God sees to it that men fear him. What is, already was; what is to be, has been already; yet God cares for the persecuted. But I still observe that under the sun crime is where law should be, the criminal where the good should be. ‘God’ I thought to myself ‘will judge both virtuous and criminal, because there is a time here for all that is purposed or done.’ I also thought that mankind behaves like this so that God may show them up for what they are, and expose them for the brute beasts they are to each other. Indeed, the fate of man and beast is identical; one dies, the other too, and both have the selfsame breath; man has no advantage over the beast, for all is vanity. Both go to the same place; both originate from the dust and to the dust both return. Who knows if the spirit of man mounts upward or if the spirit of the beast goes down to the earth?
I see there is no happiness for man but to be happy in his work, for this is the lot assigned him. Who then can bring him to see what is to happen after his time?

2024.05.21 10:37 SubstantialLaw2865 Is Private school bad in Canada ?

My in-laws advised my partner against sending our child to a private school, expressing concerns about it.
Firstly, I am not from Canada, and my education in Canada was only at the university. Also, the only people in my partner’s family who have received an education in Canada are my partner and his brother.
I do not fully understand the Canadian education system, but I went to private from kindergarten to high school and had a good experience with wonderful friends, I would like my children to go to private schools ( I mean elementary ) as well. Additionally, I have heard good things from friends who grew up in Canada (and went to private schools), which is why I believe private schools are a good option.
My partner, who went to public schools, mentioned that during his middle and high school years, some classmates smoked cigarettes and weed on campus. I have also heard that public schools in certain areas are not very good, which concerns me.
My in-laws oppose private education, arguing that it would be unfair if our children go private school while my partner’s brother’s children go to public school. I do not understand what does “unfair” means, to be honest. And only my partner and his brother speak English so I am not able to talk with them directly. Also, we never get any support from his family, but my family supports us, so I really can not understand why they talk about it. And, my partner believes that children who attend private schools are spoiled, which is why he doesn't want.
Is there a way to resolve this situation peacefully? Also, if there are any negative opinions or experiences regarding private schools, please share them with me. In my country, attending private school from an early age leads to significant connections and advantages in university admissions, but I think it might be different in Canada, so I would like to know.
Thank for reading🫶

2024.05.21 09:55 markoj22 Australia -Medicinal cannabis patients will be allowed behind the wheel to test road safety

In 2016, Australia legalised access to medicinal cannabis, allowing patients to access dozens of different cannabis products through prescriptions.
Now the Victorian government wants to take another step in opening the door for medicinal cannabis patients in the state to be able to drive.
In a bill passed last year, the government committed to launch a closed-circuit trial to research the impairment that medicinal cannabis causes on driving.
A push to change driving laws around medicinal cannabis has also been seen in other states such as Western Australia, while in Tasmania it is legal to drive as long as a person is not impaired by the drug.
But how does medical cannabis legislation work, and what are the risks to road safety?

Medical cannabis in Victoria explained

Any Victorian patient, with any medical condition, can be prescribed medicinal cannabis by their doctor if they believe it is clinically appropriate.
There are two groups of medicinal cannabis patients, with different driving rules applying to each of them.
Medicinal cannabis patients using cannabidiol or CBD products have always been allowed to drive in Victoria as long as they are not impaired.
However, some medicinal cannabis products contain a compound known as Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, which is responsible for the "high" feeling associated with cannabis and could impair driving ability.
It is currently an offence in Victoria for a person to drive with any amount of THC in their system, whether the THC comes from medicinal cannabis or not.
Victoria Police currently conducts random roadside drug testing throughout Victoria, with saliva tests that are positive for THC resulting in a drug-driving charge.
Drivers with THC in their system faced mandatory licence suspensions and fines if caught.
The new trial by the government will seek to test just how impaired people with medicinal cannabis in their system are whilst driving.

How will the trial work?

Drivers who use medicinal cannabis will be taken around driving courses with an instructor at special closed road facilities such as METEC in Bayswater North and AARC in Wensleydale.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the trial, conducted in partnership with Swinburne University, would be a world-first.
"There is nowhere in the world that actually has got that standard way of measuring impairment through medicinal cannabis," Ms Horne said.
"It is a basic human right — we've got a legally prescribed drug, let us be able to measure what that looks like in a road safety environment."
About 70 participants will take place in the trial, due to begin in September this year.
When first announced last year, the trial was praised by legal groups such as the Australian Lawyers Alliance, who have dubbed driving laws penalising medicinal cannabis users as "outdated and unfair".
"Cases are coming before the courts every week where people are losing their licence and their livelihood because they are taking prescribed medicinal cannabis and driving," Australian Lawyers Alliance spokesperson Greg Barns said.
"Drivers who take opioids or other prescription medication do not find themselves in court or risk losing their license, and neither should drivers who have taken a prescribed and legal dose of cannabis."
Ms Horne would not however say when any potential law changes would be passed if the trial is found to be successful, with results due in 2026.

Is it dangerous to drive with THC in your system?

According to the VicRoads website, THC is a psychoactive substance that has been shown to impair cognitive and motor function, increasing your risk of being involved in a motor vehicle crash.
A meta-analysis of studies conducted in 2021 found cannabis increased the risk of crashes somewhere between 11 and 42 per cent.
Researchers found the added crash risk from cannabis similar to that of the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for driving, with the high end of estimates similar to that of prescription drugs like antidepressants.
Internationally, there is a lack of research on the effects of cannabis on driving impairment.
In the United States, where recreational cannabis is legal in some states, the drug is the second most frequently found substance in the bodies of drivers involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents after alcohol.
A study of emergency department presentations in Canada, which legalised cannabis in 2018, showed no evidence of significant changes in traffic-injury emergency departments.
Driving while drug-impaired remains illegal in both countries, but the measurement of what constitutes impairment differs across state and country lines.
In Canada, any reading above 2 nanograms (ng) of THC per millilitre of blood while driving is considered an offence, while in the US state of Colorado that figure is 5ng or above.
Meanwhile, in states like New York and California, penalties are based on whether law enforcement can prove a driver has been impaired by a drug.
For now, the Victorian government has not made clear what any introduced driving laws may look like, should the trial be successful.

How have medicinal cannabis advocates reacted?

Legalise Cannabis MPs have criticised the government for moving too slowly on the issue, saying millions of dollars are being spent to conduct research that has "already been done".
"In 2023, Dan Andrews promised an answer 'in coming months' followed by a guarantee to have it fixed by 2024. Now, with a new premier, it's mid-2026 at best. She's in the slow lane," MP Rachel Payne said.
“Given the 10-year time blowout, I am calling on the premier to follow Tasmania’s lead and allow Victorians, unimpaired and prescribed medical cannabis, to drive without fear of recrimination."
Ms Payne noted a similar study that had already been conducted by Swinburne University, where 40 people were tested on a virtual driving simulator after consuming medical cannabis, as opposed to a real vehicle and road as planned in the new trial.
The Australian Legal Alliance (ALA) has also called for the prosecution of medicinal cannabis patients who are driving while unimpaired to be paused while the trial is undertaken.
ALA national president Shaun Marcus said drivers were being prosecuted merely for having a substance in their body rather than potentially dangerous impaired driving.
"That is not what road safety legislation was designed to protect," Mr Marcus said.
"The ALA is calling upon the government to not prosecute those persons currently before the courts between now and the end of the trial.
"We see the detrimental effects and over-representation of certain communities before the courts, and we say it really should change quicker."

2024.05.21 09:02 pvgvg The people we hire to do the sponsorship application are just not doing their job.

Well, my future husband (M-Canadian) and I (F-foreign), hired and signed a contract with an RCIC registered immigration consultant in Canada. We have already paid half of it. But they are very informal, never answer questions in a timely manner and when they do it is all confusing and never what we asked for. They also take their time to go on vacation, take the long weekend off...like when we emailed on Wednesday and they have not responded at all when they said our application was going to be sent this weekend. An every day is one more day away from the love of my life. So for all we know we could have sent everything at least a month and a half ago, but they take weeks to reply.. Is there anything we can do to stop working with them and switch to a better consulting firm? What law can protect us if we want to terminate the contract? The truth is that I have done it all by myself, and they get paid just for pushing a button. Any help is welcome.

2024.05.21 08:08 Esperagus US Small Business Owner Living and Operating Business in Canada

Forgive me as this may be a bit convoluted. My wife and I are both American citizens who co-own a small professional services company (we do legal recruiting, essentially help lawyers move between different law firms). For the past few years, we have given more and more thought to moving to British Columbia (Vancouver, specifically) and are starting to take the idea a bit more seriously.
In order to take the idea as seriously as possible, we are discussing our specific timeline and how to get there. Using the FSWP, I did an online assessment and came to 77 points, so it sounds like we would have a good shot at being able to go down that pathway, if I'm understanding correctly. Assuming we can get to BC that way, my questions are:
1) How we would continue to operate our US business from Canada. To be clear, our business is done entirely remotely over the phone/email/etc. so it physically doesn't matter where in the world we are. Question is would we be able to continue our American operation from Canada remotely? Or would we have to essentially shutter the American company and create a Canadian analogue?
2) Currently, our business model entails placing attorneys with law firms, who then pay us a fee when they hire said attorney. These law firms treat us as 1099 Independent Contractors. If we were able to keep the company in its current American form, does anyone know how these law firm clients of ours would treat us tax status-wise? In other words, would they continue to view us as the same ol 1099 Independent Contractors who just happen to live in Canada? Or alternatively, would they have to treat us in some more complicated way (e.g. go through the trouble of having to rely on Canadian tax forms, etc. something which they may loath to do and therefore not want to work with us as a result)?
3) Similar question as #2 but with the variation that we have a Canadian company instead (while still working for these US law firms as our customers, who treat us as Independent Contractors). In this Canadian company example, would the US law firms have to treat us differently or go through the trouble of figuring out Canadian tax issues? Or can they, e.g., treat us as US citizens who they pay and let us figure out all the details in our end (i.e. they don't even bother sending a 1099 to the IRS, but rather let us in our Canadian company glory figure it all out on our own)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.21 07:56 FeliCaTransitParking Topic idea: Front licence plate requirements

I think, with the trend in provinces (latest is New Brunswick: Front licence plates to be eliminated (gnb.ca)), states (latest is Utah; e.g. Utah dropping front license plate requirement. When can drivers ditch them? News, Sports, Jobs - Standard-Examiner), and territories have or will get rid of front plate requirements, it's a troubling trend that heavily favours vehicle owners' demands over safety of pedestrians and other road users, shifting balance to favouring vehicle owners' demands over public safety, instead of following California's way (i.e. legalizing plate's alternative materials and forms (AB 984): DMV Highlights New Laws in 2023 - California DMV) and Montana's way during an aluminum shortage (e.g. Aluminum shortage disrupts Montana license plate production (citynews.ca)) to simultaneously address vehicle owners' concerns while maintaining public safety and order. Criminals, hostile state agents (e.g. 🇨🇳 government agents), and terrorists (e.g. Khalistan, IRGC) shouldn't easily have a window of opportunity to escape justice and accountability, and bad drivers (e.g. cutting off other road users perpendicularly or in opposite direction (e.g. https://x.com/ledapperduck/status/1589650112942247937 ), hit-and-run despite high quality dashcam footage (e.g. https://www.reddit.com/SaltLakeCity/comments/1b4cjac/comment/ksytj23/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button )) shouldn't have that much privacy with no front plates especially when caught in the act. Not every victim and witness have the advance tech to reliably track the vehicle especially if victims and witnesses don't have same tech as what police uses. No front plate also makes certain systems seen outside North America (e.g. LPR방식 주차관제시스템 설치사진 및 작동동영상입니다. (STARPARKING_1) - YouTube, Dashcam 台中西區 忠明公園地下停車場 鄰勤美草悟道、廣三 SOGO - YouTube, 【New Castle Parking】 Markettown Shopping Centre Carpark (youtube.com)) impossible to implement with theoretically any overall vehicle configuration support (i.e. support for vehicles of any length towing any number of trailers of any length; e.g. pickups towing multiple trailers). I think, across the US and Canada, federal governments should become responsible for mandating front and rear plates, including visible text and mounting requirements, on federal level.

2024.05.21 07:49 FUPUNDIX LAWS AGAINST SPEAKING UP AGAINST MASS IMMIGRATION

Are there currently bills or laws in place to try to shut us — free minds down? Do we need to lawyer up?
It’s safe to say many of us who are against mass immigration aren’t racist, or hating of another culture.
We just clearly see assimilation is not working, the diversity for Canada system has failed us & now is a concern to those who see the reality… We are all dealing with the ramifications & consequences

2024.05.21 05:56 progodevil If I am creating which will store customers bank login information, which standards I am legally obliged to comply with?

Please let me know if it is not the right sub for the question.
I am planning to build a personal finance app that will be able to pull customers' transactions from their bank accounts to consolidate their financial state. I came across open banking format (https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/programs/financial-sector-policy/open-banking-implementation/budget-2024-canadas-framework-for-consumer-driven-banking.html) although it doesn't seem to be available for major banks.
My option would be to ask users to enter their login information which will be then used to pull their transactions. There are standards to make such sensitive information secure but I am not sure which standards I am required by law to store their information. Any help would be appreciated.

AOS from B2. No interview. I am so grateful, but the journey has been much longer than this timeline.
I studied in the US on F1 from 2016-2020. I struggled to find a job in 2020 on OPT due to hiring freezes and worked a job for 1 year that ruined my mental health. I moved to Canada with all my savings to study and work while maintaining a long-distance relationship with my now husband because it was the only way we could be somewhat close with timezones and still visit each other once every few months. It was lonely being there by myself.
My (now) husband and I filed for the K1 in November 2022, with hopes and plans to get married in early to mid 2023. The K1 only got approved at the end of January 2024. This took much longer than we hoped and expected.
My visit in October 2023 ended in me staying and us finally getting married, which was not planned. We were going to wait for the K1, but ended up ditching/abandoning it. We then filed for the AOS package with lawyers and here we are!
Please avoid posting any negative comments! I have struggled on this journey like many others here, with many tears being shed, hope lost, and depression consuming me. I am so thankful to be in this position now.
Feel free to ask questions 😊 Tbh I still can’t believe it’s real and am paranoid that this is some kind of mistake haha
For anyone else still waiting, please don’t lose hope. I know how hard it is and how much it sucks, but it will work out. Cling to any hope you have left and to your loved ones for support. Don’t check USCIS/lawfully daily and find ways to distract yourself and one day you’ll see good news!

Several partners own a cabin in Ontario, all of which are US citizens. We go with friends and family all by invite only, no advertising and all cost split evenly within the group going any particular week, as well as no profit made. Our group got turned around for being "outfitters" and "taking jobs from canadians" with all named partners now barred from entering Canada. We have owned this property for atleast 50 years and never had any trouble like this before. Advice or laws to look at would be appreciated.

2024.05.21 03:33 Atoraxic PSYCHIC DRIVING: DYNAMIC IMPLANT BY D. EWEN CAMERON

PSYCHIC DRIVING: DYNAMIC IMPLANT BY D. EWEN CAMERON
In an earlier communication, the procedure of psychic driving has been described in some detail.** Briefly, it is the exposure of the patient to continued replaying, under controlled conditions, of a cue communication derived from one of the original areas from which his current difficulties arise. A major consequence of such exposure is to activate and bring progressively into his awareness more recollections and responses generally from this area. The ultimate result is the accelerating of therapeutic re- organization.
It was early noted that continued replaying of a cue communi- cation sets up a persistent tendency in the patient to act in a way which can be predetenaained with respect to its general characteristics. In other words, by driving a cue statement one can, without exception, set up in the patient a persisting tendency for the cue statement and other components of the relevant "com- nmnity of action tendencies" to return to his awareness. This tendency has been termed the dynamic implant. By "community of action tendencies," a group of related activities and attitudes is meant--such as, for instance, those existing between the patient and his mother, or those related to his feelings of inadequacy.
Since, clearly, this continuing result of psychic driving might greatly enhance its effects, considerable study has been directed to the conditions controlling the setting up of the dynamic implant and to the effects of the implant. The findings are reported here- with.
PROCEDURE
The dynamic implant may be set up either by autopsychic or heteropsychic driving. The first procedure consists in the repeated playing of a cue communication made by the patient. The second is the replaying of a communication devised by the therapist from his knowledge of the patient's dynamics.
*From the Allan ~emorial Institute of Psychiatry, Montreal, Canada. This paper was read at the l l l t h annual meeting 'of the American PSychiatric Association in Atlantic City, M~y 11, 1955.
*'*Cameron, D. Ewen: Psychic driving. Am. J. Psychiat., 112:7, 502-509, January 1956.
704 PSYCI-IIC DRIVING: DYNAMIC IMI'LAlX:T
Since autopsyehic driving is more easily carried out, this re- port has been based upon that type, with implants set up by means of periods of 10 to 30 minutes' driving--repeated, if neees- sary, once a week.
Preferably, the communication should deal with one topic only and should not be longer than about 20 seeonds. In practice, the material is derived from a psychotherapeutie hour whieh has been recorded on magnetic tape. It has been found useful to transfer these communications to 14-inch records and to reproduce them through a high fidelity phonograph adjusted for continuous playing.
The communication should be derived from a community of action tendencies which are of basic signifieanee to the patient. Moreover, it is most effeetive if taken from the time of origin of this eomlnunieation. It may, for instance, be selected as ex- pressive of one of the great formative relationships of the earlier part of the patient's life, as in the following eommunieation, in which the patient is reliving her early relationships with her mother :
"Everything about me was wrong--the way I acted, the way I spoke, the way I dressed.., everything, everything I did. Many times she [the patient's mother] would just talk and talk and talk, and . . . well, I ean't go thinking up these things."
Or it may be drawn from a long-eontinuing elimate of rejection, insecurity, or hostility whieh prevailed during a critical early period in the patient's personality growth:
"Now that I think about it, seems to me that my parents had me just to even up the family . . . not because they wanted me 9 . . because of eourse their attitude towards me . . . Gee, I don't remember the boys getting as much hell as I did.., or my sister." The signifieanee of the eue eommunieation must be assessed, not only in terms of the therapist's conception, but also in terms of the patient's response. The two do not neeessarily eoineide.
The second is the more realistic guide. The following is an example of the patient's immediate response
to the implanting of a eae eommunieation. For the purposes of presentation, a response at the upper level of intensity has been seleeted. The ease is that of a woman suffering from anxiety
D. E W E N CAMERON~ IVi.D. 705
hysteria with many conversion symptoms. The cue communica- tion ran as follows:
"I stayed home all the time when my mother lived. I stayed with her.., didn't want to leave her. I was always left staying home with her and... I didn't have any life like all.., the other girls."
On the first implanting on January 4, 1955, the patient, who had come in that day and rather gaily said that she had nothing on her mind and nothing to talk about, was silent. At the end of five sdnutes she said, "It makes me nervous, you'd better stop it... it makes me feel bad." She was now restless and anxious and very different from the gay person she had been when she came at the beginning of the hour. At eigl~t minutes: "Doctor doctor, I've had enough, please stop it." Holds head. Nine min- ut,es: "That's enough. It makes me nervous to hear that." Ten minut,es: "Why don't you stop it, doctor. I've heard enough. It is always the same."
At the end of 10 minutes, the patient was asked: "What did you think about it?" Answer : "It made me nervous all over again. Everything hurt me all over as it did before. My voice sounds like I am going to die." She then went on to bring out a great deal of new material, saying: ")~iy mother almost might not have had me, I was so quiet as a child." And again: "After my mother died, my father gave up his music and began to drink. I tried to take her place for him. I wanted so badly to please him and I cried every night and I tried to carry on. i kept everything very much to myself. My father was like a child. I had no friends by the time my mother died, I had stayed at home so much."
If the cue communication evokes too great a response from the patient, it will, in a measure, defeat its own purpose, since defenses will be erected which may take a considerable time to reduce.
The writer would like to state here clearly an answer to a question which he is sure will arise in everybody's mind. In two years of exploration into this new field, covering more than 100 cases, in only one has there been seen a possible persisting trauma resulting from the implant; and even here, current events ---such as the breakdown of a love affair and threatened deporta-
706 PSYCHIC DRIVING: DY~A~IIC IMPLA~:T
tion--undoubtedly contributed to, if they did not cause, the panic state through which the patient passed.
As an example of a cue communication which is not well chosen, the following is presented. It was selected earlier in the writer's experience and, as can be seen, is drawn from a period when the patient's personMity structure was already well developed; it is representative of current stress and is not expressive of those forces which brought about a formation of the early neurotic traits which have got the patient into continual dif~.culties through her insatiable seeking for affection and endless understanding:
"Well... because... I%obert doesn't care.., and I have always thought I would have it in time [a house] . . . and I have been very patient . . . and I don't know whether it has just suddenly 9 . . I realize now it is all so hopeless, thinking about it."
After considerable experimentation, two additional procedures which facilitate the establishment of the implant have been found. The first is tha~ the sound should be conducted to the patient's ears through headphones. This causes the patient to experience the driving with much greater impact, the more particularly since he frequently describes it as being like a voice within his head. For instance, one patient said: "I've heard enough. It goes right through my head." Another reported: "It's too close; it's horrible; I hear all the stuttering."
A second procedure is to produce a filtered record: that is, having a recording made of the cue communication with the emphasis first upon treble notes and then upon bass; or, again, with the emphasis upon a low volume or a high volume; or with spacing or repetition of key phrases; or with the introduction of an echo-back into the communication. All these variations serve to keep the patient continuously oriented toward each repe- tition and, hence, serve to diminish the most common defense-- not listening.
On November 9, 1954, the first attempt was made, using an ordinary record to implant the following communication:
"I was afraid of them all the time. I mean I didn't dare... talk anything over with them whenever I went out on a date or something like that . . . I mean a lot of kids . . . you know . . . they'd come home and tell everything they did and everything .,. I never.. 9I always felt as if I would be scolded, I mean if
D. E W E N CAMEIION~ M[.D. 707
I ever did mention what I had done and then I wouldn't do it." At the end of 10 minutes, the patient, who had shown no re- sponse, said, "Is that a record, doetorf' Asked what she felt, she said: "I had no feeling at all as I listened; I was thinking
of something else." The same communication was then set up in filtered form. To
this the patient's response was at once different. ,She eommented that she felt extremely tired after listening to it, that the voice sounded as though it were inside her head; and she said: "It brought back a lot of memories of my childhood days." A few weeks later, when it was used again, the patient said: "When I listen to that voice now, I feel like screaming and putting on a tantrum. The voice seems to scream at me all the time. It is like the voice of a stranger, though I know it is my own. It seems to say, 'I was afraid of being scolded.' It says it over and over again. It makes me think that even with my husband and my father and my father-in-law I have to hide things from them. I feel trapped. I feel I can't talk to anyone."
Experience shows that the implant can most readily be set up if the driving is carried out during the last 10 minutes of the psychotherapeutic period, the reason for this apparently being that best results are obtained if nothing is done to interrupt the ongoing response of the patient to the fresh implant--as would be the ease if one continued therapy afterward. It is some- times useful, however, to spend some five minutes asking the patient what fresh recollections the implant has brought up. This inm~ediately widens the area of the patient's response and probably tends to stabilize the implant.
A question which must be met at this juncture is: Why is it that statements which the patients have already made, had for- mulated in their own minds, and had listened to themselves utter- ing, should be so potentially disturbing when replayed to t h e m - f a r more so than when they first made them, never more than a week before and sometimes only 10 minutes before. This question has been explored in some detail and reported earlier. Discussion will be limited to three brief statements: (1) The work involved in listening is far less than the work involved in speaking; hence the patient, when listening, is much freer to respond to what he hears. (2) The law of the summation of subliminal stimuli
708 PSYCI-IIC DRIVI~rG : DYNA~[IC I~iPLANT
seems to be operative: The longer one listens to a statement, the more response it evokes. (3) In all of us, a defense is set up against responding to all the implications of what we say. This defense appears to be with respect to a synthesis of air- conducted and tissue-conducted sound. The recorder, making use as it does of air-conducted sound only, evades this defense.
A. Findings R,el;ative to Process of Setting up of Implant
Several factors governing the establishment of an implant have been identified:
Intensity of Response. The intensity of the response of the individual to the driving period tends to increase the dynamic character of the implant which is thus set up. This is true whether t h e response takes the form of tension, anxiety, hostility, un- happiness or any other facet of the intensification response. This statement must be qualified in that, as the area involved becomes progressively activated by the patient and worked through by him, the intensity of the response will, after having risen to its maximum intensity, graduMly decline. Factors limiting the in- tensity of the response are: the patient's defense, his stress toler- ance, and his capacity for desensitization. These will be discussed la~er.
Amount and R.epet#i:on of Driving. Repetition of the driving of the cue communication on subsequent days will reinforce the dynamic aspects of the implant. Less clear is what the optimum amount should be, either of the driving on any given day, or the frequency of the driving within a series of .days. The practice has been to limit driving to 10 or 15 minutes on any given day, as it is found that thereafter the patient usually succeeds in establishing defenses or becomes so disturbed as to be unwilling to continue. The repetition of the driving thus far has been limited to a maximum of once a week and a. minimum o~[ about once a month.
Defenses. The defenses against the setting up of an implant are essentially the defenses against psychic driving itself.* The chief of these defenses are: (a) inhibitory reaction to implanting by thinking of other things; (b) suppression of emotional reaction to the material; (e) denial of responsibility for the statement,
'~Cameron, D. Ewea: Ibid.
D. E W E N CAI~IEIIONj I~.D. 709
as where the patient states, "I listen to it as though it were a stranger talking"; and (d) misinterpretation; this is much less frequent, but on occasion patients succeed in completely reversing the sense of a statement, even when repeated 30 or 40 times, by changing it from an affirmative to a negation.
Methods of penetrating the defense which have been most successful are: (1) continued repetition; (2) the use of the ear- phones; and (3) the use of the filtered record, as indicated earlier in this paper. This last procedure, by its continuous shift in pitch, in volume, in spacing, and by other devices, penetrates the patient's defenses by repeated evoking of what Pavlov has termed in the animal the "orientation reflex." Other methods, such as psychic driving carried out during mild sodium amytal narcosis or during continuous sleep or during the induction phase of ni- trous oxide, have not been nearly so successful. In practice, the penetration of defenses has not been found to be a serious prob- lem.
  1. Stress Tolerence. Knowledge concerning this is rather limited; but it would appear, from preliminary observations, that patients vary considerably in their ability to bear stress. Those who can tolerate stress well will, in general, show less tendency to react to psychic driving by the setting up of a lasting implant. On the other hand, those who tolerate stress very poorly are likely to respond, either by withdrawal from the driving situation alto- gether or by the setting up of powerful defenses.
  2. Capacity for Desensitization. Concerning this phenomenon, there is still less information. But~ from experience in other fields, it would appear that here, again, patients vary considerably in their ability to desensitize themselves; and those who cannot de- sensitize themselves readily will show a persistence of the implant for longer periods.
B. Findings ReLativ:e to the Effects of the Dynamic Implan.t
Mobi:li.zation of Action Tendencies and Progressive Problem Identificc~tion. The dynamic implant, especially when reinforced by repeated driving, tends to mobilize more and more of the com- ponents of the community of action tendencies from which it was taken. These components tend to appear in the patient's awaxe- ness. This fact, in turn, facilitates problem identification by the
710 PSYCHIC DI~IVING : DYNAIViIC II~PLANT
patient and the therapist. This progress may be assessed in the following ways: (a) by the extent to which the patient thinks about the cue communication in the period between his treat- ments, and the extent to which his ruminating over the cue com- munication evokes new material; (b) by the new material which is evoked at the time of reinforcement of the implant--namely, by playing the material back again on a subsequent occasion; (c) possibly by general shifts in the behavior of ~he individual subsequent to implantation; for instance, it may be possible to demonstrate that the fact that the patient is now sleeping better is related tooreorganization brought about by the implant; (d) dreams and psyehologieM testing may also reveal the reorganiz- ing force being exerted by the hnplant.
The first two methods of assessment are obviously the most direct and scientifically satisfying.
Illustrative of the progressive problem identification brought about by the dynamic implant, is the case of a girl who had come to therapy suffering from long-term feelings of inadequacy, marked dependency and a highly ambivalent attitude toward the male figure. The cue statement was:
"... and there's . . . uh... there's still that tendency to idolize or despise.., that tendency still exists.., uh... I perhaps don't do either quite as strongly now.., or feel either, I should say... But...uh... there still is that feeling, that one is a king and the other is a piece of dirt. Well...I mean...uh.., as you very well know.., you know exactly the type of feltow that I go for, and.., uh... all others I just seem to have no use for."
Immediately after the first implanting, the patient stated: "I sound bitter and dissatisfied ; I sound as though I am reaching for something I can't have." A change in behavior took place follow- ing this first implanting. After reinforcement, a further change took pla~e, the patient saying that her boss whom she had hitherto found extremely attractive to her because of his ability and business drive was now no longer so;she did not think of him any more as being a tyeoon, and a love affair with him ter- minated. A third period of driving brought about no change at the time; but a week afterward the implant had most considerable consequences: She gave up, she sMd, the whole idea of a "king"; she had now fMlen in love with a man of her own age. Asked how
D. EWEN CAMERON~ 1Vf.D. 711
this came about, she said: "I simply made up my mind that since I can't get a 'king,' I would give myself a chance to like John. I don't put people on a pedestal like I used to.; I don't feel the same way I used to about the boss. I used to have a bitter grudge against my father for my troubles; now I see him as a weak person I don't admire."
  1. Durability of Implant. The writer's experience has shown that the implant, if not reinforced, declines in its activity fairly rapidly after two weeks; although, on occasion, it can be found operative as long as two or three months after the first implant- ing. As indicated earlier in this paper, the intensity of the implant can actually be progressively increased by a suitable reinforce- ment at rates of once a week to once a month.
  2. Shift.ing At~itud,es Towa.rd Cu.e Comm~nication. The writer has frequently encountered the interesting phenomenon of the according of negative values to the pattern of behavior repre- sented in the cue communication: "I hate my whining voice"; or: "I don't have to please people all the time; I'm not like that any more." This imparting of negative values is particularly likely to occur either after repeated implanting or with the progress of psychotherapy in general. A working premise concerning it is that, since the patient comes more clearly to identify the neurotic components in the cue communication and to organize more efficient behavioral patterns, he tends to reject the neurotic patterns and to express negative feelings toward them.
  3. Mobilization of Action Tenc~e~c~es. An interesting question which arises is whether an implant can mobilize action tendencies laid down before the event embodied in the implant. Experience indicates that, while this does occur, it is much less usual than the mobilization of action tendencies laid down subsequent to the implant and derived from the basic situation outlined in the cue communication used in implanting.
By continued replaying of a cue communication, a persistent tendency to act in a way which can be predetermined in its general characteristics can be established. In other words~ by driving a cue communication, one can, without exception, set up in the patient a persisting tendency for that cue statement, and other
712 PSYCI-IIC DRIVING
components of the "community of action tendencies" from which it was drawn, to return to his awareness.
  1. The dynamic implant thus established, and especially if re- inforced by repeated driving, tends to activate more and more of the components of the relevant community of action tend- encies. These components tend to appear in the patient's aware- heSS.
  2. This materia]]y contributes to problem identification by the patient and the therapist, and, hence, facilitates the processes of therapeutic reorganization.
  3. The dynamic qualities of the implant are functions of: (a) the amount and repetition of driving; (b) the intensity of the response; (c) defenses; (d) stress tolerance; (e) capacity for desensitization.
(5) The major continuing effects of the dynamic implant are: (a) progressive problem identification; (b) resulting reorganiza- tion of behavioral patterns; (c) negative evaluation of the neu- rotic patterns present in the cue communication used in driving.

Will people finally start taking female sexual predators seriously?
If Rebecca Joynes had been male, no-one would have felt a “shred of sympathy”. Such was the contention of the prosecutor in the case of a teacher convicted on Friday of having sex with two male pupils. Joynes, 30, groomed both schoolboys from the age of 15, a jury at Manchester Crown Court heard.
Making the case against her, barrister Joe Allman sought to illuminate how differently society tends to view female teacher predators compared to their male counterparts. Had Rebecca been “Robert” instead, and the complainants girls not boys, the response would surely not have been the same, the prosecutor argued.
This thought experiment was more than a courtroom flourish. There is evidence to support the idea that society does indeed view female teachers who prey on male school pupils in an alternative light to how male teachers preying on girls are seen.
In a 2019 academic article, entitled Sexual Abuse by Educators, researchers suggested institutions may be less likely to grasp the potential for female teachers to abuse. “That over one-third of the male teachers [in a sample of 40 perpetrators] had received prior warnings due to their behaviour towards students but none of the female teachers had, was a notable finding potentially indicating a ‘gender blindness’ to inappropriate behaviour by women,” wrote Dr Andrea Darling from Durham University and Dr Larissa S Christensen from Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast.
Yet the statistics make clear that the phenomenon of female teachers who abuse male pupils is both real and serious. In a 2014 study of abuse by teachers in south-eastern US states between 2007 and 2011, more than a quarter (26 per cent) of perpetrators were female – complicating the popular idea of the “pervy teacher” as a man.
“Contrary to earlier beliefs and prior depictions of romanticism in the media, females can inflict persistent psychological and physical impacts on victims,” wrote Darling and Christensen.
In the case of Joynes, senior prosecutor Jane Wilson was unflinching in her characterisation of what had occurred. “Rebecca Joynes is a sexual predator,” she said. “[She] was entrusted with the responsibility of teaching and safeguarding children. She abused her position to groom and ultimately sexually exploit schoolboys. Her behaviour has had a lasting impact on them.”
Joynes, from Salford, had been on bail for sexual activity with the first boy when she began having sex with the second boy, by whom she would become pregnant. After going through a messy break-up, she had been “flattered” by the teenagers’ attention, the court heard.
Jurors heard how she groomed one of them by taking him to the Trafford Centre and buying him a £345 Gucci belt before having sex with him in her flat.
She was convicted of six sexual offences against the two pupils. Two of these offences were carried out when she was in a position of trust. “Joynes decided to abuse her position,” said Detective Constable Beth Alexander of Greater Manchester Police’s child protection investigation unit, again making clear the seriousness of the offending.
Yet the cultural approach to such abuse of power by female teachers has tended towards the humorous nudge-and-a-wink response. In 2015, a Saturday Night Live sketch called Teacher Trial was criticised for making light of the idea of a female teacher raping her teenage male student. The fictional student (played in the American comedy show by Pete Davidson) refers to the attack as “the best day of my life”.
It’s hard to imagine a similar sketch with reversed gender roles making it onto the airwaves. But the attitudes it spoke to weren’t without some basis. When a former “Miss Kentucky”, Ramsey BethAnn Bearse, was sentenced to prison in 2020 after admitting exchanging sexual photos with a teenage student while working as a teacher, some of the responses to the story on USA Today’s Facebook page were telling. “What a lucky kid” wrote one reader.” “Best teacher of all time,” said another. A third correctly pointed out that “the comments… would be totally different if it was a male teacher and female student.”
The more gleeful responses to liaisons between female teachers and male pupils seem informed by the idea of schoolboy fantasy fulfilled. Less so by the idea that this constitutes actual abuse.
Old pop songs, such as Rod Stewart’s Maggie May (about a teen “used” by an older woman), have arguably helped romanticise inappropriate relationships between schoolboys and women. While the words “paedophile teacher” do appear in headlines about female perpetrators, the notion of a lascivious but essentially harmless Mrs Robinson figure endures.
This is despite findings that “the characteristics, motivations and modus operandi [are] broadly similar across the genders” when it comes to teachers who abuse pupils.
Analysis by Darling and others has indicated female perpetrators are “neither inexperienced naïve teachers nor fit the stereotype of females coerced by men to offend against young children”; that their motivations to abuse were to meet emotional needs, and for sexual gratification where these needs were not being met in other adult relationships.
Female teachers who abuse their charges do appear to differ in some ways from male equivalents. The 2014 American study found female teachers were more likely to commit offences against older students (aged 13 or over) than male teachers (who were more likely to abuse students aged 12 or under). A 2015 study of cases in Ontario, Canada, found female teachers were on average younger than offending male teachers (32 compared to 37 years old).
Darling and Christensen’s study of 20 women and 20 men who had sexually abused students while working as teachers in England between 2006 and 2016 found that while male teachers were more likely to engage in more severe abuse, female perpetrators were more likely to continue the abuse after it had been discovered.
“The importance of recognising the potential for female perpetration of such abuse in the same way as male perpetration has been identified,” the researchers argued. So why is a blind eye more likely to be turned to the former?
“Professionals who sexually abuse the children with whom they work will often say that their employers and colleagues were easy to manipulate as they generally trust that people who chose to work with children had their best interest at heart,” says Dr Joe Sullivan, a forensic psychologist. “This is particularly the case for female teachers, social workers and childcare workers who sexually exploit and abuse children.”
These are not irrational assumptions. The overwhelming majority of people prosecuted for sexual offences in general are men, and the overwhelming majority of survivors of sexual violence are girls and women. According to the charity Rape Crisis England & Wales, 91 per cent of those prosecuted for sexual offences are male over-18s. The Crime Survey for England and Wales ending March 2022 found the victim was female in 86 per cent of sexual offences.
But other data paints a more complex picture. Although the vast majority of paedophiles continued to be men, the number of female paedophiles almost doubled between 2015 and 2019, according to figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws by Radio 4’s File on 4 programme.
Campaigners attributed the increase to victims having more confidence to come forward.
“Most people have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that some women want to and do sexually harm children, and this societal denial is understood and exploited by female perpetrators,” says Sullivan, who has worked with police officers and educationalists to provide insights into the motivations and behaviours of child sex offenders. “Female teachers who target adolescent boys will often minimise and justify their intentions and actions by telling themselves that the child is nearly old enough to give consent. If a child responds to the teacher’s sexualisation of the relationship with curiosity or interest they will use this to further legitimise their conduct to themselves.”
Most professionals who work with children are not routinely given training about how sexual abusers behave, he says. “Hence, they do not generally know what to look for and consequently shy away from calling out unusual or concerning behaviour.”
Police and charities have warned that female-perpetrated abuse of boys remains a taboo subject, with victims suffering an extra stigma in such cases. It is thought this can inhibit some victims from coming forward. It could also lead to an underestimation of cases.
The conviction of Joynes – which follows the jailing of a number of other female school staff for sexual activity with pupils in recent years – may signal that things are changing.
Darling and Christensen have called for further discussion of female teachers abusing pupils, “to prevent such gender blindness and make victims of female-perpetrated sexual abuse more comfortable disclosing the abuse to a trusted adult.”
Sullivan, too, sees a need for greater understanding and education. He warns: “People who are seeking to sexualise their relationships with children thrive in organisations where staff are ill-informed.”

2024.05.21 02:32 Honest_Advance_3771 Changes are coming

I’m reaching out to provide you with an update on Prop 22, the ballot measure that California voters passed by a large margin in 2020. Prop 22 upholds your status as an independent contractor while also making sure you are entitled to benefits, including a minimum earnings guarantee.
Since Prop 22 passed, California drivers and couriers have received more than $1 billion from the minimum earnings guarantee and additional benefits from Uber alone — a testament to the impact of this important law.
Unfortunately, Prop 22 is currently being challenged in the courts by labor unions. While it’s been upheld so far, a final hearing is happening tomorrow.
An unfavorable ruling could completely dismantle your right to independent work and the flexibility, protections, and benefits that have been afforded by Prop 22.
For now, nothing changes. You can continue to drive and deliver wherever and whenever you want.
We’ll keep you updated on the outcome of the court case. And we want you to know that whatever happens, we'll keep fighting for your right to independent work.
If you would like to help protect Prop 22, consider joining the Protect App-Based Drivers & Services (PADS) coalition.PADS actively represents your interest to California lawmakers in Sacramento and keeps you informed about the latest developments related to Prop 22.
Thank you for everything you do, and for staying engaged on this important issue.

2024.05.21 01:25 Any-Measurement-1717 Why we need to decrease immigration to Canada: he Law of Supply and Demand

As Canada continues to grow its' population it continues to increase demand on limited housing supply., in addition to healthcare services. The next election in 2025 needs to be about MASS immigration. I am ALL for immigration. But MASS immigration is breaking Canada. Increase population= increase housing cost, suppress wages, increase unemployment, increase doctor shortage and decrease healthcare quality and access. Decrease population and make the TFW program back to 10% of an employer's workforce= workers to fill actual labor gaps (ie trades and agriculture and healthcare), increase Canadian wages as employers need to pay living wages for Canadians and PRs, increase housing supply. If we make the election about the carbon tax, let's take a different spin on it... decrease Canada's population and decrease PRs, TFW and international students= decrease Canada's carbon footprint.
IT MAKES SENSE, but people don't want to talk about it because you could be labeled a racists. Canada is diverse and we need to keep all Canadians healthy and have access to a functional healthcare system and have shelter that is AFFORDABLE. Immigration has no race attached to it so don't let people tell you otherwise. Whether Canada accepts Ukrainians or Indians or Koreans we need immigration but we need to be selective about who we let in based on their skills and what they bring to Canada. We do not need more TFWs with no skills and are put in low wage jobs. Tim Hortons and other fast food places can pay Canadians living wages to get their employes. Make the next election about MASS immigration.
