2024.05.22 05:16 Playful_Spinach9697 Recommendation Letter and/or TEFL

Hello!
I am planning to come teach in China soon. I have both a TEFL certificate and three years of teaching experience in kindergarten. Most job listings say TEFL OR recommendation letter proving 2 years of experience. Should I just use my TEFL? If I bring both the TEFL certificate and letters with experience proof, will this open me up to better or more job opportunities?
Also, since I only have experience in kindergarten and some elementary for afternoon classes, in most cases will I be limited to kindergarten positions?
Thank you!!

2024.05.22 05:12 Hosdo1 Toxic Office Manager Situation

I need some advice on handling a challenging situation at my job please. I'm a medical doctor in a medical practice with multiple locations, and I've been with this company for the past 6 years. Recently, a new office manager was hired about six months ago, and her presence has significantly disrupted our work environment.
Here's a rundown of the situation:
For example: The office manager asked me for a diagnosis for insurance purposes. When I explain that I need an X-ray first, she argues, citing cases where I didn't require an X-ray for other patients. Her main concern seems to be avoiding confrontation with the patient and preventing the need for a follow-up visit, likely to avoid potential poor reviews.
My Dilemma:
I want a peaceful work environment without the risk of being fired. I don't want to transfer to another office as I am comfortable here, have a routine, and good relationships with staff and patients. This office is also the closest to my home. The office manager is the sole source of my frustration. This is the first time something like this has happened to me and I do not know how to proceed....
  1. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? How did you handle it?
  2. Do I have grounds to escalate this to Human Resources or take any formal action, etc?
  3. Is there a way for me to "win" this situation and restore a peaceful work environment?
  4. Any advice on dealing with her power plays/lies and managing my own frustrations?
I appreciate any insights, recommendations, or shared experiences. Thank you in advance!

2024.05.22 05:09 science_is_hip Personal Injury claim blown off for time since incident, but within statute of limitations

I got hit as a pedestrian in a crosswalk by a Lyft driver in NYC in 2022. I had a concussion and broke my collarbone which required surgery, some missed work, and several weeks of physical therapy.
Initially I did not plan to pursue a personal injury claim outside of my medical bills. My understanding is that in New York under the np fault statute, the driver is responsible for medical bills that come from this type of incident.
I need to add that I live in Nashville and my own car and health insurance is in TN. I was traveling in NYC visiting friends for the weekend, then had surgery and related care back at home in TN.
The drivers insurance was extremely difficult to work with, repeatedly asking for information I had already given them, and unable to speak with anyone on the phone who was knowledgeable enough to help. After the NY hospital group threatened to send my bill to collections, I put them in touch with the drivers insurance company and they finally sorted things out.
But I am still out a few thousand dollars for medical expenses after I came home and have asked for reimbursement from the ins company with no response. I had a busy demanding job at the time and was frustrated with the whole situation so once I stopped getting calls from bill collectors I sort of forgot about it.
I know they owe me for medical expenses and I believe I probably have a personal injury claim. So now that we are about 8 months out from the statute of limitations in NY, I thought it would be good to pursue a claim against the drivers ins company.
I put my information in with one of the nationwide personal injury groups - I’ll spare you their name but you have seen them on TV. I went through all the screening processes and within a half hour they told me I had a case and they wanted to take it.
Here’s my confusion———
A couple hours later, someone called me who self identified as their attorney. He started questioning me on the timeline, why did I wait so long, did I have legal representation before this, etc. I explained the situation as above and he said “we don’t really take cases that are 2 years old”
So….. I don’t get it. The whole point of me pursuing a claim is bc the statute of limitations is about up and i’m pissed at this ins company for not covering what they owe.
What am I missing? Is there some other secret deadline I missed? Is there some other reason a personal injury attorney wouldn’t want to take an older case? If it’s a valid claim it’s valid, why does the timeline matter?
Any context, feedback, or advice is much appreciated.
TLDR: I think I have a claim against the insurance of a driver who hit me as a pedestrian, but a personal injury firm won’t take my case because it’s “too old,” but it’s well within the statute of limitations.

2024.05.22 05:08 divorceadviceneed Child support adjustment California

Hi, Reddit Attorneys!
I am paying child support for 2 kids ages 7 and 10 - $1000/month.
I lost my job recently and the child support payment is overwhelming. Is there a way to have my payment lowered permanently?
My assets: I have an out-of-state property that I am renting out but it only covers mortgage payments. I also have about 100k in savings. I own a regular car that is paid off (worth less than $10k).
My expenses: I am renting a room in the house in California where I live. The payment is $1000. Living expenses are about $1000/month – gas, groceries, etc.
My ex-wife lives with kids, her brother, and his wife in her house. The mortgage is in her name. She is engaged. She has a job. She also has a condo in California that she is renting out for profit.
I consulted online – the attorney fee is $3-5k which sounds like a lot of money.
Questions:
1. What are my chances of having my payments lowered?
2. Can I represent myself? Will it have an impact on the outcome?
I would appreciate any advice.

2024.05.22 05:06 Chubbysloot I feel like I’m going down a slippery slope

I feel like I’m starting down a path with no return and I’ve made it so people don’t care. I SH, I stopped therapy, and my drinking has gone from casual to heavy in a matter of months. The thing is I don’t think I have anyone that would actually be affected if everything goes to shit and, at least right now, all is handled. My bills are paid, I work out almost everyday, I eat healthy, I’m there for my friends / family as much as I can be, I do my job and don’t turn up drunk or hungover, and I still save / contribute to a retirement fund that gets invested. By all accounts I am a well functioning adult in society and I will be fine. Yet there’s the under current. The self isolation, the SH, the negative talk, the avoidance of any new relationships, and the drinking. I’ve pushed people away, I’ve burnt them out and I’ve recently noticed that I’m just toxic so I kick everyone out to an ok distance and keep it at that. Even if I tried to reenact the support I don’t think I’d get it. I mean the last time I brought up my concern about me being alcoholic my friend made a joke of it and moved on. Again I don’t blame anyone for this but myself but I don’t know I want someone to hear and understand me on this. I don’t feel like I can stop and at this point the best outcome is just managing so I don’t fuck everything up. I don’t even want to stop. I don’t want to go through life sober when I feel the way I feel and the thoughts and habits haven’t impacted my life in a negative way so why stop? I mean I got blood work and I’m in tip top shape and I got all As in my 3 college classes WHILE working full time. Isn’t that crazy? I know the road will end and the fun will stop but I honestly don’t want to live that long anyway so it doesn’t fully matter to me, as long as I don’t have to deal with heavy fall out oh well. And I’ve been to therapy and I thought it was helping but things just got worse, my therapist even said I’m resistant to it so what’s the point of going back until I’m well enough to handle it? It feels like a catch 22. I need to be healthy to make my life better but I can’t be healthy until my life is better.

2024.05.22 05:05 Vegetable-Mango-9812 Cant afford root canal and it seems to be infected. Help?

I haven’t been to the dentist in a little over a year as I couldn’t afford to go beforehand, alongside not being able to afford dental insurance. Eventually, I qualified for the states medicaid which luckily covers some forms of dental work but unfortunately not all. The root canal seems to have gotten worse over the past few years as this was something that needed to be fixed over 2 years ago that I couldn’t get done. It’s a molar so unfortunately the medicaid wouldn’t cover, everything would have to come out of my pocket. Here’s the thing though, I think my root canal is infected and has been for over a month; the gum near the molar is swollen & a lymph node on that side is swollen as well. I also have an abscess (seems like one) on the other side of my mouth, and was told by my general doctor that it isn’t an infection which I know it most likely is. I know pulling a tooth is an option, but I don’t want to resort to that as I already am missing a molar on the other side of my mouth from a past infected tooth. Though healed up fine, I get food occasionally poking the spot which can be bothersome. The side the root canal is on is the side I use to comfortably chew as well.
Would this count as an emergency for a dentist? I was supposed to make a dentist appointment for a new patient visit, but at one dentist was told the wait time would be 4+ months just to see the dentist in general. Even if I did see the dentist, would they even be able to do anything? Hell I cant afford to pay for them to pull my tooth either if it resorted to that as I just started a new job and the training has been super inconsistent. Training has been sort of an on call situation atm even with my set hours in, and I’m not sure how much longer it’s gonna be like this as it’s for some new location that will open up soon. I’m willing to up and find someplace else if they don’t open up soon. I’m also not gonna get paid much this check, but would be willing to get some sort of dental insurance with some of what I have just to maybe see a dentist that doesn’t take medicaid. If it’s even worth it that is. So it would seem paying right away isn’t an option, but I don’t know how much longer it can wait. I hear it can spread to your brain or jaw and kill you which makes me a bit nervous. I’m just lost on what to do. Tomorrow I plan on calling around more. Even so, is there anything I can do during the wait?

2024.05.22 05:04 SanderSo47 Zemeckis

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Robert Zemeckis' turn.
As a child, Zemeckis loved television and was fascinated by his parents' 8 mm film home movie camera. Starting off by filming family events like birthdays and holidays, he gradually began producing narrative films with his friends that incorporated stop-motion work and other special effects. After seeing Bonnie and Clyde with his father, Zemeckis decided that he wanted to go to film school. His parents disapproved of the idea, but he still went to USC, where he meet his colleague Bob Gale. One of his student films caught the attention of Steven Spielberg, who decided to become an executive producer and help him with his career.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978)

"It isn't fatal, but it sure is fun."
His directorial debut. It stars Nancy Allen, Bobby Di Cicco, Marc McClure, Susan Kendall Newman, Theresa Saldana, Eddie Deezen, and Wendie Jo Sperber. Its story follows a disparate group of teenagers over the course of one day in New York City as they attempt to gain entry to the Beatles' first live appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964.
The reason behind the film's existence was that Steven Spielberg was confident Zemeckis could make a feature length film after watching his student films. So he signed as executive producer, his first credit. But Universal was not thrilled with the concept and handing the production to an unexperienced director. To bankroll it, Spielberg had to promise studio executives that, if Zemeckis was seen to be doing a markedly poor job, he would step in and direct the film himself.
Despite the backing of a major studio, the film flopped with just $1.9 million domestically. But it received very positive reviews, so there was interest in giving Zemeckis another chance. Zemeckis himself said he learned a important lesson here:
"One of the great memories in my life is going to the preview. I didn't know what to expect [but] the audience just went wild. They were laughing and cheering. It was just great. Then we learned a really sad lesson... just because a movie worked with a preview audience didn't mean anyone wanted to go see it".

MOVIES (FROM HIGHEST GROSSING TO LEAST GROSSING)

No. Movie Year Studio Domestic Total Overseas Total Worldwide Total Budget
x I Wanna Hold Your Hand 1978 Universal $1,944,682 $0 $1,944,682 $2.8M

The Verdict

Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Richard Donner. An influential figure in superhero films, for Superman changed everything.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Tony Scott. It was inevitable, as we already covered his brother Ridley.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
June 17-23 Tony Scott Action films have not been the same ever since his death.
Who should be next after Scott? That's up to you.

2024.05.22 05:02 beazy731 Best place to retire

I’m roughly 12 months from retirement. Myself and the wife cannot figure out where we want to retire. We’ve looked at the typical spots like Florida, Texas, Tennessee and a few others. My job is easy to translate to the civilian side. We have three kids. So looking for a family friendly place that has good special education programs. We have done our own research but figured I would ask. So what places would you recommend ? We are pretty open to move anywhere.

2024.05.22 05:01 tornadoflewaround Can't get a Emgality prescription

Hi everyone,
I moved to the US (California) after 3 years of taking CGRPs and now I can't get Emgality again. It looks like only a neurologist can prescribe it for it to be approved by my insurance, so my PCP can't and the clinic neurologist looked at the case and thought it was "too complex", saying that I needed to go to a migraine clinic. The first appointment is scheduled for DECEMBER.
Until then, I feel like I cannot live anymore. I have extreme light sensitivity due to an eye surgery that triggers it and I have left the house less than 10 times in a month. I'm working from home now but barely able to work.
Does anyone have suggestions? I saw this Cove website, they don't have my insurance (HMO) but it looks like its not going to be prescribed by a neurologist so insurance wont cover it anyway. Do they usually cover it if the neurologist is not in-network? Everything is so different here and in pain is much harder. Thank you.
(the title is missing a letter, sorry)

2024.05.22 05:00 Front-Bench-9247 AITH for being tired of my husband’s depression?

A little background before I get started….i have been with my husband for 13 years and have been married for 6 months. My ‘34F’ husband ‘33M’ was laid off last year in February of 2023 from a large company with tons of potential. Currently he has been a substitute teacher while he “figures things out”. Subbing is an inconsistent job with a paycheck that only covers mortgage, bills, and a little extra.
My husband has lost two siblings to substance abuse. Most recently he lost his sister last year in August 2023. His depression has been a lot worse and so has his job hunting. His grieving has taken a toll on him all his life.
This also affects our relationship and communication as he can be immature.
I question if I’m a horrible person if I’m tired of his depression? He understandably has had a tough upbringing and deaths close to his heart. But I feel like I’ve only ever seen him at 60%. Sparingly do I see him happy. On top of all this, financially he is unstable and cant always put in 50% of his portion on home repairs, vacation, etc
When I bring these topics up he gets extremely offended and says: -I don’t feel emotionally supported by you -you don’t trust that I will figure things out -you don’t understand -you only criticize me etc
He is seeing a therapist and is also on depression medication.
AITAH for being tired of years of his depression and the repercussions of it?

5:03 EEST; The Sun is Rising Over Kyiv on the 819th Day of the Full-Scale Invasion. The Glorious History of the 92nd Assault Brigade, part one.

The 92nd Assault Brigade, Part 1

Field insignia of the 92nd.
The Ukrainian army has undergone a significant transformation since the country regained independence: from the remnants of a Soviet structure, to powerful units that have been repelling Russian armed aggression for over 10 years. Soldiers have strengthened their might in battles, trained with Western colleagues, and continue to do so today.
One of the leading units, especially during the full-scale invasion by Russia, is the 92nd Assault Brigade named after Kozak Otaman Ivan Sirko. In this special documentary project "Units of Victory," we talk about the brigade’s combat achievements and the fiercest battles.
_______________________________
Profile of the 92nd Assault Brigade named after Kozak Otaman Ivan Sirko
  • Branch: Ground Forces
  • Type: Mechanized Infantry
  • Year of Formation: 2000
  • Base Location: Village of Kluhyno-Bashkyrivka, Slobozhanshchyna
  • Command: Operational Command "East"
  • Anthem: Performed by the band "Tin Sontsya" (leader — Serhii Vasyliuk, who currently serves in the 130th Reconnaissance Battalion of the Territorial Defense Forces).
  • Symbol: The emblem features crossed stylized muskets of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (yanycharky) over the palisade of the Cossack Sich on a green background.
  • Motto: "Honor for us, glory to Ukraine!"
  • Social Media: Facebook, Instagram (links will be provided in the comments!)
_______________________________
History of the Brigade's Formation and Early Combat Encounters
The 92nd Brigade was formed on the basis of the 6th Division of the National Guard of Ukraine, which had been part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 1999 and was called the 6th Mechanized Division. In 2000, the then-President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, approved the creation of a new unit—the 92nd Mechanized Ropsha Brigade of the Orders of the October Revolution and the Red Banner. Thus, this year is considered the founding year of the 92nd Assault Brigade (92 OShBr).
The unit's name was changed in 2015 when the Ukrainian army began the process of decommunization. The brigade became the 92nd Mechanized Brigade. The honorary name—named after Kozak’s Otaman Ivan Sirko—was granted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in 2019.
The Brigade maintains close connection to the Kozaks and the Zaporozhian Sich as part of Ukrainian combat tradition. For example, the sleeve emblem features the muskets of the Zaporozhian Kozaks — yanycharky. These were commonly used among the Kozaks of Slobozhanshchyna—the region where the 92nd Brigade was formed and is based, and which Brigade’s defended in 2022 during the Kharkiv counteroffensive. During these events of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Brigade's soldiers demonstrated their offensive capabilities, leading to the unit's designation changing from mechanized to assault in August 2023.
https://preview.redd.it/p3duly6h6w1d1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=7ff2f25ae26fabe27b9ecf4de5085bbcc0b892e7
In 2011, the 92nd Brigade, which was then preparing to protect state facilities during "Euro 2012" in Donetsk, faced significant reductions by the government and was slated for disbandment by 2015. However, the events of the Revolution of Dignity and the onset of Russian aggression in the East re-drew these plans. The Brigade's soldiers were able to demonstrate their effectiveness: in 2014, they participated in the attempt to break the encirclement of troops at Ilovaisk, fought in the areas around Stanytsia Luhanska, Shchastia, and along the Bakhmutka river. In 2015, the 92nd Brigade engaged in battle and captured two soldiers from the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) and recaptured the town of Shchastia.
Since 2020, the Brigade has been led by Colonel Pavlo Fedosenko. From 2014 to 2015, he served in the volunteer battalion "Kryvbas," which was formed in response to Russian aggression by the residents of Kryvyi Rih. Pavlo participated in the battles of Ilovaisk and Debaltseve. He continued his military career in the 54th Mechanized Brigade, and later in the 92nd Assault Brigade (92 OShBr). The commander values the unit's soldiers for their cohesive work:
"This is a powerful Brigade with principles and traditions. Therefore, it was very easy to command this Brigade; there was no need to change or break any foundations. It was just a matter of leading and managing."
For Pavlo Fedosenko, it is important to be close to the personnel, understand the situation, and know what is happening on the front lines; otherwise, he says, he cannot make decisions. This has not changed since the Brigade was granted assault status. On the contrary, according to the commander, it adds to the responsibility as well as the prestige:
"First of all, it is prestigious for every warrior to be considered an assault soldier [...] Secondly, we are always at the forefront. Thirdly, we are at the spearhead of attacks. We are more often on the offensive than on the defensive. [...] Every warrior is proud to be an assault soldier."
https://preview.redd.it/8wco6fvi6w1d1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=ad5c5e7998dcff327074a1fd1985c5100a976112
The Start of the Full-Scale Invasion: The Defense of Kharkiv
In 2022, the Brigade faced the Russian offensive along the entire border line in the Slobozhanshchyna and Donetsk regions. The invasion was not a surprise to them; the soldiers had been preparing for months, creating the illusion of troop deployments for the enemy. They also improved the level of training for their personnel: in November 2021, infantry and officers participated in the Combined Resolve XVI Exercises in Germany as part of an American battalion.
February 24, 2022, was more tumultuous for the 92nd Assault Brigade (92 OShBr) than anticipated, despite their readiness for enemy actions. They had to constantly relocate and establish new positions. According to the commander of the tank battalion, Oleksandr (call sign Phoenix), the start of the full-scale invasion felt like a movie:
"We were just near the military camp, standing in a grove. The funny thing was, we were near the RAA (Rocket and Artillery Armament) depots where ammunition is stored. We were essentially sitting on a powder keg. [...] We were lying in a tent, sleeping. One of our guys came in. At that time we already heard some 'bangs.' And we were like, 'Is it like fireworks.' It was something unclear, completely incomprehensible. He turned on the light, looked at all of us, and we were already lifting our heads, realizing something was happening. He said, 'Guys, this is no f’ fireworks.'"
https://preview.redd.it/open24uj6w1d1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=c939f56dd2630e0cc8386f4e5792e7b05cd7b1c1
The military Brigades knew their objectives and had prepared defensive positions, but they couldn't occupy every one of them in time. The enemy advanced in a wide strip along the entire border, following military manuals to the letter. Artillery Brigade Commander Andrii recalls:
"At first, the enemy's artillery operated strictly by the book. They would bombard areas exactly as the manuals said, covering hectares with hundreds of shells, without discerning specific targets. I think they started the war using Soviet Union methods, as written in their combat regulations, showing no initiative, sparing no ammunition. They didn’t care about their own units or people, standing in a line. In the first week, they didn’t even try to hide. But I realized that when the Russians understood they were taking losses, they also wanted to live. [...] Something awakened in them, and they started to hide."
Brigade Commander Pavlo Fedosenko estimates that the initial force ratio in the Kharkiv direction was approximately 1:10 in favor of the occupiers. Ukrainian defenses had significant gaps that the Russians could have exploited if they had wanted to. Commander of the 4th Assault Battalion Petro was surprised that the enemy did not take advantage of this. The opponent moved as systematically matching the organized defense.

One of the reasons for this could have been that the Russian soldiers genuinely believed they would be greeted in Kharkiv with flowers and happy cheers. As a result, they often did not plan their logistics carefully, losing equipment due to a lack of fuel and facing food shortages. Additionally, Ukrainian soldiers were not merely retreating; they were also managing to strike the enemy, engage in battles, and complicate the advancement of Russian columns as much as they could. The Brigade's artillery units constantly fired at the enemy, day and night. Commander of the Rocket Artillery Battery, Oleksii, with his division, struck Russian forces near the village of Pechenihy, close to Chuhuiv, on the first day. He and his mates were near the Pechenihy dam when they learned from intelligence that the enemy had once again set up pontoons and started crossing in columns. The artillerymen then opened fire.
"At that time, we weren't sure about the results of our fire. [...] We fired, and I heard the shells falling, a few seconds later I heard explosions, and I heard the detonation of ammunition. I understood then that it was 100% hitting enemy ammunition, not residential houses or fields. I realized we were doing something significant. Within the first 24 hours, I understood we had hit very well. A few days later, it became clear that our Division alone had destroyed three enemy columns. These were not just 10 vehicles each; they were kilometer-long columns."

The 92nd Assault Brigade regrouped near Kharkiv and, together with other units, maintained the defense. Sometimes, clashes with the Russian army occurred within the city itself — the enemy managed to break through from the outskirts only once (they took positions on the ring road around the city). For example, soldiers from the Brigade were among those who fought against special forces in Kharkiv Specialized School No. 134 on February 27.
One of the key operations, according to the soldiers of the 92 Brigade, was the assault on the village of Mala Rohan, approximately 22 kilometers from Kharkiv. Lieutenant Colonel Oleh (callsign Barracuda) recalls that they faced well-prepared and equipped Russian troops. The enemy had heavy flamethrower systems (known in Russian as TOS) with thermobaric rockets that disperse an explosive substance which mixes with the air and detonates, as well as Nona towed artillery installations. According to Oleh, the Russian soldiers managed to establish a foothold in a wooded area between the road and Mala Rohan, where they held out for quite some time before retreating after a battle.

However, this assault was pivotal, demonstrating to both the soldiers of the 92nd Brigade and the Russians that Ukrainians could and would not only defend but also go on the offensive. Brigade Commander Pavlo Fedosenko emphasized:
"The entire war is difficult. It was harder in the early days to break the enemy. Transitioning to a counteroffensive, moving on to Mala Rohan—these were the most challenging moments. When we had to overcome, when we had to rise, stand up, and move forward. After we went forward, we realized that we were capable, that the enemy was not as terrifying and strong as portrayed. After this, we continue to move forward and will keep advancing until victory."
During the defense of Kharkiv, the 92nd Brigade captured its first prisoners. Commander of the 4th Assault Battalion Petro said:
"Our first prisoners turned out not to be Russians, but our Ukrainians from the occupied territories. These were 18-20-year-old guys from Makiivka, Donetsk, and Yasynuvata. Students. We talked to them about how just yesterday they could travel anywhere across Europe. Their parents came to visit them from Europe. [...] And all of this ceased to exist in an instant."

He was most surprised by the number of Ukrainians recruited into the ranks of the Russian Federation. Among the Russian prisoners, there were both experienced soldiers and newly mobilized ones. They all had a common explanation for their presence in another country's territory. According to the Brigade Commander Pavlo Fedosenko, all the captured Russians claimed they were on exercises and didn't know where they were going.
In those early days, the main thing was for Kharkiv to be defended. Major Oleksandr (callsign Skat), Commander of the 22nd Motorized Infantry Battalion, believes that it helped significantly that most of the Brigade's soldiers were from Slobozhanshchyna. They understood they were defending their own land:
"Nobody wanted, nobody, nobody even had the thought to abandon Kharkiv, to retreat somewhere, to leave."
According to Pavlo Fedosenko, the successful defense of Kharkiv was also possible thanks to unity. Soldiers from different Brigades and units worked together, supported by police, territorial defense, and volunteers who promptly responded to requests, while civilians provided situational updates:

"Everyone fought. Everyone who could hold a weapon. Those who couldn't hold a weapon—the phones were 'red hot.' People helped, called: 'The enemy is there, we see them there, we see them there.' And not just from Kharkiv, from the entire region. 'There’s a column, there’s something'—[they told us]. Accordingly, everything was promptly responded to, processed, and fire damage was inflicted."

2024.05.22 04:56 aslkdj21234 Where to invest next? (Mid 30s)

401K, FSAs and HSAs are maxed and we don't qualify for Roth IRAs for pretax.
I am targeting retiring by 55 and should be able to get by with 3.5M. if I stick at my current job for a few years I'll likely burn myself out but might be able to retire sooner. Anyways looking to hear thoughts on other investment areas.

2024.05.22 04:56 Wyraticus Springfield, MO

I’m an army veteran working private security now with no special retirement benefits at work. Considering a federal job to make that happen and the post office is one of them I’m considering. Anyone local to the area with tips, info, whatever on how it is here? Thank you 🫡

2024.05.22 04:54 Fickle_Dot_8386 my plan

i just need to outlive my mom so she doesn’t feel the pain of losing me the same way we lost my dad.
i’ve been suicidal all my life. was SA’d as a kid by my brother. self harmed for years. groomed by my high school teacher. lost my dad to suicide. i’ve always known that something in me is fundamentally and irreparably broken.
i’m not planning on living past age 45. i don’t see why anyone would want to. working a shit job 9-5 to make ends meet your whole life just to finally retire when your body is already breaking down? no thanks.
i’d rather just slowly eat away at my savings for the next 20 years, experience all that i can, love as many people as i can, laugh as much as i can, and then buy a gun and vanish into the forest on my 45th birthday and just disappear.
i probably won’t leave a note. i want it to look like an accident. i don’t want there to be any lead-up, i don’t want anyone to even entertain the idea that they could’ve stopped me. i’ve known all my life it would end this way.
i feel such a sense of peace thinking about it.

2024.05.22 04:50 Inside-Reveal4005 Moving from Canada to anywhere else

I f**king hate it here in Canada, I hate it when uneducated Americans tell me their sob story and act like Canada is some holy land which it is USA with all the problems solved. It's the absolute opposite. Healthcare, the wait times are HORRIBLE! The doctors are overworked and tired and make basic mistakes during diagnosis. The grocery and food prices are out of control. There is barely any jobs to get compared to US/Europe countries. Housing, you think the US/NYC is bad? Try Toronto. They will rent a shitty mold covered apartment out for $2000 to share with 10 other international students and you better take it up because there will be 1000 other people in line ready to take the offer if you don't. Traffic is nonstop too. Finally, our transportation. Our city has increased 4x in the past 20 years yet not one upgrade has been made to transport infrastructure.
What are some nice countries I can move to with my passport? One that doesn't have all the problems I stated above? Do I consider USA?

2024.05.22 04:50 Odd-Reputation-4666 Which job should I choose?

Okay guys here is my problem, i got 2 jobs lined up in insurance and am having a difficult time picking between them.
Job 1 : 5 day WFH , 70 000$/yr , insurance fully covered rrsp etc..
Job 2 : 4 day WFH, 1 day in the office (the office is an hour away) , 68 000$ same other perks as job 1 in terms of insurance rrsp..
The only thing that makes me hesitate is that i think the 1 day in the office can make my career grow faster. Im someone that creates bonds with people easily and i feel like this can help you get where you wanna be faster(taking in consideration you do everything you’re asked and more)
I also know that we are in a job hopping situation so maybe i would change job before even being able to get promoted . What do you guys think?

2024.05.22 04:46 whitelampbrowncouch Job covering broker fee. How to best use this to have a broker find me an apartment that best meets my needs

I'm in the process of relocating to the Boston area this summer. As part of the relocation package my job can cover any broker fees with no limit on amount. How should I go about leveraging this to find an apartment best suited for me?
I assume not all brokers are the same, so how would I find a good one to really do the leg work for me?

2024.05.22 04:46 International_Ask_26 Is $20/hr reasonable?

So for the last 4 months I’ve been working as an unpaid intern at an employment firm bc I have no experience and did not go to law school yet. I will be starting this august.
The lawyer just started paying me and I am calling clients and writing 4 demand letters a day. I would say I’m doing a pretty decent job. Do you think $20 is reasonable or am I getting underpaid?

2024.05.22 04:45 Adept_Blackhand So I made a USSG fanfic

First of all, for someone who don't know, USSG is basically our Ursus girls, Zima and co. Basically, Children of Ursus is one of my favourite events and it may got hooked me to this game up to this day. So I wanted to make pretty much a continuation of that story, trying to keep the whole vibe of the original and making it lore accurate, but at the same time adding some new details that don't contradict the original. I wanna continue making this wall of text, but if you just don't want to read it, here's the link, really hope you'll like it:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14353680/1/A-Homeland-Within
It's not long.(I promise lmao)And I'm not a native English speaker, it may have some linguistic mistakes here and there, but I did a big job at polishing it. But if someone will point smth out, I'll be very grateful. Btw, hope that there is no problem with me sending a link to this website, I remember seeing a post in this sub that also promoted their fanfic with providing a link, so hope nothing changed, otherwise F. So, what I wanted to add is that I've been cooking this one for quite some time. And by that I mean 2 years exactly (or even more actually). What I made here is only a first chapter and an introduction to the whole story. I had a first version of the first chapter, but I found it too lame and simple, it's not worthy publishing, so I just spent an another year remaking it from 0. I had a lot of more in plans, more drama, more characters involved, more big stuff happening, more OCs (since it's kinda necessary here) etc. Mostly depends on people's interest. So anyway, once again, thank you if you gonna give a try.
P.S. - I was thinking about adding some artwork to make a cover, since it might boost some traffic, but I don't wanna steal anybody's work so I just put it this way. If someone can give an advice about that and clear my doubts, I'll be grateful.
