2024.04.12 23:54 bbandrew Golden Nuggets from Dane Brugler's The Beast: Scout Quotes, Who's Been Arrested, and Team Captains

Been making my way though the whole thing and thought I'd grab some stuff I look for and post it here. This is a yearly tradition for me at this point. It is a MUST READ for anyone interested in the draft.
Would love to hear what you guys think about some of this stuff! Also if you find anything else interesting please drop it below!
What NFL Scouts Had To Say
QBs
CALEB WILLIAMS- (NFL scout: “He wants to be Jay-Z of the NFL and a true entrepreneur, and that’s great as long as he’s winning on the field.”).
DRAKE MAYE- (NFL scout: “Considering his family’s success, I expected a cocky kid, but he’s real grounded and humble. The ‘golly-gee’ stuff isn’t an act. He’ll need time before he’s ready to lead an NFL room, but he’ll get there.”)
J.J. MCCARTHY- (NFL scout: “Before he signed, he was telling other Michigan recruits that if they wanted to party and chase girls, go somewhere else. His class was going to be the one that restored Michigan. To have that mentality and then actually go achieve it? He’s different.”)
JOE MILTON III- (NFL scout: “Instead of bolting once (Hendon) Hooker took his job, he stayed patient, and it paid off for him.”)
AUSTIN REED- (NFL scout: “As a competitor, he’s Philip Rivers — he’ll kill you with a smile. You love him on your team and despise playing against him.”)
RBs
BRAELON ALLEN- (NFL scout: “Rare maturity for his age. Plus, he’s a homebody. He’s all football, all the time.”)
RAY DAVIS- (NFL scout: “He chose betterness over bitterness. Talk about being dealt a rough hand. He overcame and did it with a smile.”)
WILL SHIPLEY- (NFL scout: “He’ll light a fire under the ass of his guys. … He leaves it all out there and expects the same from his teammates.”).
DYLAN LAUBE- (NFL scout: “He fits the ‘best kid is your hardest worker’ cliché.”)
DAIJUN EDWARDS- (NFL scout: “Really low-key, laid back guy, but he runs like a mean sumbitch when his number is called.”)
GEORGE HOLANI- (NFL scout: “I really thought he would be bigger in person.”)
WRs
MARVIN HARRISON JR.- (NFL scout: “As talented as he is, his discipline and dedication to the craft might be the most impressive part of this guy.”)
KEON COLEMAN- (NFL scout: “His drive since he was a kid was to max out his ability and cash in for his family. … That singular focus and talent? Yeah, I’ll bet on that.”)
RICKY PEARSALL- (NFL Scout: “The kid has heart. … His daddy was a tough-as-shit, sticky-handed receiver and the apple didn’t fall far.”)
XAVIER LEGETTE- m (NFL scout: “The coaches say he became their best practice player. And he never misses a practice.”)
MALIK WASHINGTON- (NFL scout: “You can feel his rugged toughness on tape.”)
TEs:
THEO JOHNSON- r (NFL scout: “I know (Pat) Freiermuth influenced him a lot when he got there and showed him what it takes to play big-boy football.”)
TIP REIMAN- (NFL scout: “The coaches say his ‘give-a-shit’ factor is off the charts.”)
OL:
TYLER GUYTON- (NFL scout: “The OU coaches just marvel at him. They call him different than everyone else they’ve had.”).
KINGSLEY SUAMATAIA- (NFL scout: “I just don’t think he’s ready. Hopefully, he’s not thrown to the wolves right away.”)
BRADY LATHAM- (NFL scout: “Brady is the manifestation of the toughness coach (Sam) Pittman demands in his program.”)
ZACH FRAZIER- (NFL scout: “I started texting our O-line coach clips of Zach in the summer.… He’s going to love him even more when he meets him.”)
EDGEs:
ADISA ISAAC- (NFL scout: “Phenomenal kid. His family is everything for him. Football is more of a means to an end for him, but his family drives him to be great out there.”)
BRENNAN JACKSON- (NFL scout: “One of my favorite guys in my area to talk to. Ball and life.”)
IDLs:
JOHNNY NEWTON- (NFL scout: “You have to ignore the measurables and focus on the football player, because he’s a good one.”)
MIKE HALL JR.- (NFL scout: “With his talent, I bet he would’ve been a first-round center if he wanted to stay on offense.”)
Also MIKE HALL JR- (NFL scout: “I’d like to see him she d some of the weight and be a 265-pound linebacker.”)
T’VONDRE SWEAT- (NFL scout: “ Did you see the new Mario movie? When Donkey Kong pounds the snot out of Mario? It gave me flashbacks of Sweat’s film.”) “party animal” and “class clown” as an underclassman by NFL scouts
MARCUS HARRIS- (NFL scout: “He got way too big just to dominate the bench.”)
LBs:
TOMMY EICHENBERG- (NFL scout: “He has a dead-eyed demeanor. His personality is football. You know exactly what you’re getting with him. Plus, the coaches say he’s one of their best practice players. Never Goes half-speed.”)
TATUM BETHUNE- (NFL scout: “When I ask the coaches who their best practice player is, ‘TB’ is the first name they mention.”)
EASTON GIBBS- (NFL scout: “He’s the ultimate ‘process’ guy … a player General Patton would’ve loved.”)
DBs-
QUINYON MITCHELL- (NFL scout: “From now on, I’m calling him ‘right on Q’”.)
NATE WIGGINS- (NFL scout: “He’s the type of competitor you love on your squad but despise him if (he’s) not.”) … described as “immature” when he first arrived by head coach Dabo Swinney, but he was praised by the coaching staff for his maturation and “buy-in” the last two seasons
KRIS ABRAMS-DRAINE- (NFL scout: “Don’t judge a book by its cover with him. Super competitive dude.”)
JAYLIN SIMPSON- (NFL scout: “He’s the life of the party.”)
JOSH PROCTOR- (NFL scout: “Every time I’m in Columbus for gameday, it’s No. 41 jumping around, getting his teammates and the home crowd jacked up.”)

2024.03.01 10:26 TheDaviot The Guns of Nikke (as Requested)

u/artyaakaira22 asked in this thread:
I challenge anyone who can gave a real world resemblence of every single nikke gun (to be fair i want to know it either)
Challenge accepted. Except I couldn't actually reply because there are too many Nikke and Reddit has a 10,000 character limit on replies which I ran afoul of.
(Corrections/thoughts welcome)
The guns in Nikke fall into roughly three categories:
  1. real guns (with trim/paint added)
  2. semi-fictional guns (take cues from real-world weapons, but aren't quite the real thing)
  3. fictional guns (weird rocket launchers, energy weapons, etc.)
So, going by Nikkepedia order...
10 March: Correction for Mary; added "D-Killer Wife", glossary.
Selected Glossary:
Bullpup: A firearm where the firing grip and trigger are in front of the breech/chamber. This layout has its benefits and drawbacks, most notably a longer barrel for the same overall length (or the same barrel in a shorter gun), at the cost of a heavier trigger (due to it being linked by a cable or wire across the rifle) and restricting the rifle to either right-hand-only use OR if ambidextrous, more complicated operation. They often show up in movies and games for their unconventional/futuristic/cool looks.
Closed Bolt vs Open Bolt: A mechanical description of the default "ready" state of a gun. A closed-bolt weapon is ready to fire when a cartridge is loaded into the chamber (back of the barrel) and the bolt assembly closed over it. An open-bolt weapon is ready when locked open; on firing, it chambers a round of ammunition and fires in a single cycle. Historically, most SMG's and MG's were open-bolt, due to it being mechanically simpler and to allow for better cooling. Most rifles (SR and AR's in-game) are closed-bolt since the shorter delay and lack of a heavy metal bolt slamming forward when the trigger is pulled leads to much better accuracy. The downside is that since the default state has a cartridge in the chamber, an overheating weapon might "cook off" (auto-ignite) and fire unintentionally from the heat of the barrel igniting a cartridge's gunpowder.
Recoilless Gun/Rifle: The less-famous cousin to rocket launchers, both typically spit fire out the back and make things blow up. A recoilless rifle avoids the harsh recoil of an artillery cannon by ejecting the burning propellant out the back. Like normal smaller rifles and cannons, their shells are stabilized by spinning in the barrel and only gain speed while in the barrel, then coasting to their target. For contrast, a rocket launcher's propellant is in the rocket itself, typically uses fins to stabilize itself, and it will continue to accelerate after it leaves the launcher. In real life, bigger vehicle-mounted recoilless rifles of the Cold War era have largely been replaced by guided missiles, though smaller shoulder-fired recoilless guns are still in service. The "RL" weapon type in Nikke is a mix of true rocket launchers, recoilless guns, and grenade launchers.

Skirm loadout to go!
Paintball to airsoft conversion.
I absolutely loved airsoft. With all capture the flag, defend and dominate objectives, missions and its realism and play of honour (call your hits) it just makes the game so much more fun rather than just playing for kills.
Would appreciate your feedback!
New to airsoft. I run an AEG Krytac barrett rec 7 sbr! steady so far out of the box at 1.0 joule and about 350-400 fps.
No problem within the 50 meters range. A bit of hop up issues around 70m. Would probably need some hop up upgrade and barrel.
However i noticed HPA rifles have a faster fire rate and overall more fun to play with.
The question is should i invest in upgrading my AEG or get a new HPA? Thanks

2022.03.16 10:57 theSeacopath Personal Diary of Dr. Alexei Markov - Entry 11: The Final Push

After our near miss with the “not-a-rabbit,” Vadim, Mikhail and I approached the southern border of the Army Warehouses. The road to Rostok was practically in sight. Vadim and Mikhail had been in high spirits for most of the day; a stomach full of food would lift anyone’s morale. I took point, with Mikhail following me and Vadim bringing up the rear. Occasionally we changed course to avoid roaming packs of mutants, but for the most part, our day was trouble-free.
We approached the Bloodsucker Village. This was a creepy place by anyone’s standards. A small village of Stalkers had once sat on the land, but a fire had ravaged the buildings and all the people in them following the Second Great Expansion. Intriguingly, not a single tree, bush or blade of grass had been harmed by the fire. Stalkers compared the place to the ancient city Sodom; in that only nature had been spared the destruction. I took a long look at the razed foundations of burned-out houses shaded by lush trees. It would have almost been beautiful, if we didn’t know what lurked in the ruins.
Bloodsuckers preferred to hunt at night, when they were most dangerous. These ravenous beasts had the ability to turn themselves almost completely invisible, and used this ability to great effect, ambushing prey and draining them of every drop of blood they could. Stalkers still came to the destroyed village, because the houses were full of Burner Anomalies that produced flame-related artifacts. For this reason, the area was well known as a death trap for ambitious, lone Stalkers. “Makes you think, doesn’t it?” I mused. Beside me, Vadim took his eyes off the road. “Hmm?”
“The more things like this I see, the more I’m convinced the Zone itself is alive, and if not sentient, then at least aware.” I replied, pointing to the burnt buildings. “Look how all the houses were destroyed, and yet everything that wasn’t man-made got left alone.” “Coincidence, maybe?” Mikhail asked. I shook my head. “No such thing as coincidence here.” A distant howl interrupted my rumination; we picked up our pace and quickly left the hungry inhabitants of the burned village behind.
Another short distance passed under our boots, and we approached the border leading into Rostok. Vadim visibly perked up. “Almost here, boys. Fuck, I can’t wait to get back to the Hundred Rads.” “Vodka does sound pretty good to me,” Mikhail agreed, wincing as the hot sun glared down on us. “Let’s get a move on.” Across the bridge, a squad of Duty troopers could be seen guarding the entrance to the Rostok complex. Vadim waved to the troopers; a few of them saluted, but most of them looked at us curiously.“Privet, brothers!” Vadim grinned, walking forward and shaking one man’s hand. “Is Voronin around?” ‘He’s in the base, as usual,” the lead man replied. “I think he’s in a meeting though.” Vadim scoffed. “Ah; he’ll have time for me. I’m bringing him some damn good news.” The Duty trooper waved us through the checkpoint. “It’d better be! Good hunting, Stalkers!”
We entered the Rostok base. Mikhail was looking around, taking in the sights; I guessed he’d never really properly been in Rostok before, owing to the fact that he’d been living with the Freedomers, who were decidedly not welcome. Up ahead, a Duty Sergeant put a batch of recruits through their paces with push-ups and sit-ups, while a bit further on, another officer was leading a small squad through Exo Training; the Exoskeleton-equipped troopers were busily tackling a massive obstacle course. The mechanical troopers were running, jumping, punching and shooting their way through a forest of swinging logs, high ledges and sheer walls. Targets dotted around the course were getting a thorough pounding from the weapons in the Exo troopers’ hands.
Noticing my squad, the first Duty Sergeant pointed at us and shouted at his grunts doing push-ups. “See that, slimeballs?” the Sergeant snapped. “Get the fuck into shape, and you might get some fancy toys of your own!” An exhausted chorus of “Yes, Sir” answered the man. Vadim and Mikhail kept walking in the direction of the Duty base, while I wandered over to the officer running Exoskeleton training. The man turned to me. “Ah,” he nodded. “Doctor Markov. I was wondering when you’d show up; ever since I built this little cake-walk, I’ve been expecting you here. I’m Sergeant Woodstock.” “Nice to meet you, Stalker,” I replied. “How long have you been an Exo pilot?” “Forty-three successful missions in the Exo, and counting,” Sergeant Woodstock nodded proudly.
“Well, this sure looks like it beats blowing the heads off bankrupt Bandits in Arnie’s arena,” I grinned. “Let’s have a go.” Woodstock turned to his squad and put his hands to his face. “Maggots!” he shouted. “Weapons down and clear the range! We have a special guest here!” The suited Duty troopers paused and put down their rifles, clearing off the course; some jumped to the ground, shaking the pavement with muffled booms. The dozen Exo troopers stared at me, examining my suit and weapons. I heard quite a few whispered exclamations when people noticed the frame I’d built for my M90 rifle. Woodstock patted my shoulder. “Get ready, Doctor; impress us.” Woodstock raised a revolver in the air, and I stepped up to the gauntlet’s start line.
At the blast of the revolver, I charged forward, my Exo’s steel boots powering through the mud. One, two, three, four, five steps, and I reached the first obstacle; a four-foot high wall, leading onto a wooden bridge. I slammed one hand down on the edge of the wall, and vaulted over, barely slowing down as I ran across the bridge. A target popped up to my left, and promptly snapped back when a 7.62 round exploded through it. Another wall was up ahead; I tossed my SCAR in the air and jumped up hard enough that two wood planks splintered under my boots. I shot upwards, landing gracefully on the next level of the course; my rifle neatly dropped into my hands and I took the head off the next target.
I could feel all eyes on me, tracking my progress as I ran up a narrow wooden corridor ten feet off the ground and climbing. The hallway rapidly narrowed; I spun to the side and slipped through the slim gap, my exo’s chest plate barely brushing the edge of the wooden panel. Another target fell back with a hole in its center. Up ahead was an open space filled with vertical logs like stepping stones. Thinking quickly, I activated my targeting system. The Nosorog’s computer lit up a sequence of logs on my HUD; leaping into open space, my left foot came down on the first log, and I jumped to the next one, and the next, never slowing down until my feet hit solid ground.
I skidded to a stop around the next corner; four dummy targets blocked the way forward, rolling towards me on tracks. I aimed my SCAR and let rip. The dummy on the left crashed backward, and I switched focus without blinking; another two dummy’s heads burst apart in an explosion of straw. The center dummy was almost upon me; I charged forward and put my armored fist through its chest, ripping the mannequin right off its rails. From below, I heard someone let out a “Jesus!” I shook the destroyed dummy off my arm and ran into the next obstacle.
Logs swung heavily all around me, some covered in large rounded lumps of steel. The floor was full of wide gaps too. I spun on my heel and slid to the side, narrowly avoiding a wide swinging trunk. In my peripheral vision, I spied a target visible between three logs; activating my shoulder frame, I spun to the left and fired my massive rifle. The target exploded, and one of the swinging logs fell down through a gap in the floor with a hole blown clean through it. Someone cursed and I heard people scrambling out of the way before the length of wood crashed to the mud. Another corner, and I was faced with three more target mannequins wearing buckets and steel scraps like crude armor. My SCAR flashed up, and I put two rounds into the heads of the mannequins on each side; my Barrett cracked, and the middle dummy disintegrated entirely.
At the next corner was a sheer drop; easily eight feet down. I jumped off and braced myself. My boots hit the planks, splintering them, and the shocks in my suit’s knees absorbed the impact with a loud explosion of compressed air and electric stress. Running to the side again, I narrowly missed a line of rounds from another dummy equipped with a paintball rifle. A well-placed shot from my SCAR, and the dummy was blasted backwards. I sprinted down another corridor, ducking to avoid the paintball turrets embedded in the walls; splatters of colored paint flew all around me, and I dropped down, sliding through to the next challenge.
A round arena loomed ahead, ringed with target dummies. The floor in this obstacle spun like a giant record; the spiral pattern painted on it would have made anyone dizzy. I charged onto the spinning platform and stopped dead, letting the massive turntable carry me. From my spot on the spinning floor, I sent precise bursts of two rounds into each of the mannequins’ heads. Running forward through the mist of straw fragments, I ran to the door, but one of my feet went out from under me when my boot snagged on a bolt.I almost fell on my side, but I was barely able to get both my feet back under me; I grabbed the doorframe and charged down the next hallway…
Only to feel my guts drop into my boots. There was no floor left under said boots; the obstacle course ended abruptly. I fell the final ten feet to the ground, crashing heavily into the mud in an explosion of brown. Groaning, I forced myself to my feet and stared down Sergeant Woodstock, furious under my helmet’s blank skull faceplate. “What the hell gives, Sergeant?” I snapped. “You couldn’t have put in a finish line, or stairs, or something?” Woodstock was staring at me, face seemingly torn between frustration and astonishment. I paused. “What?” “There wasn’t a finish line because that’s the farthest anyone’s ever gotten; most people get shredded in the spinning room, if they even make it that far.” Woodstock looked up at the course above my head. “Thanks a lot; now I have to build the next obstacle.” In spite of his grumbling, the Sergeant wore a big grin. I retrieved my SCAR from where it had fallen in the mud, scraping dirt from the mechanism. “Thanks for the run,” I replied. “Now where’s that squad of mine? And more importantly, where the fuck are the showers?”

Half an hour later, after a thorough soaking of myself, and after cleaning my weapons, I pushed open the gate of the Duty base and was immediately greeted by the wrong end of a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The duty trooper at the other end shouted at me. “Identify yourself! Name and faction!” I rolled my eyes. “Doctor Markov, Ecologists, Applied Science Division. I’m here with my squad to see Voronin.” “What’s your authorization code?” the trooper snapped, still holding his rifle on me. I sighed. “For fuck’s sake. VADIM GREEK! GET OUT HERE!” I hollered past the gate into the base; Vadim appeared around a corner a moment later. “What’s going on?” The gate guard didn’t lower his weapon. “You know this guy? He looks like UNISG to me.”
I ground my teeth together. “If I was, I’d have tried to shoot my way in here; I wouldn’t be standing here politely, getting interrogated by the likes of you.” “Don’t you threaten me!” the Duty trooper shouted. Vadim stepped in front of him and forcibly pointed his rifle at the ground. “I’m with him, okay? He’s not UNISG, he’s just a smartass.” The guard hesitated, before he jerked his head at Vadim. “Fine; he can go in, but he’d better behave himself.” As I walked past, the trooper narrowed his eyes at me. “I’m watching you, Egghead. Next time you threaten me, I’ll have you arrested.” I stopped and turned back to the idiot. “I wasn’t threatening you, you nutsack-faced foghorn of ignorance,” I snapped. “I was stating the obvious; I’m not with UNISG. If you call me one of those brainless wastes of cumshots ever again, I’ll blow your fucking head off. Now that was a threat.” I let Vadim guide me past the gate into the base; the guard stood fuming in my wake.
“Nice reception,” I grunted as Vadim led me past groups of Duty troopers sitting around campfires, comparing weapons and eating. Vadim rolled his eyes. “Making friends everywhere you go, I see.” “I can’t help it; it’s my animal magnetism.” I smirked. Another eye roll from my comrade. “I thought magnetism was supposed to attract people, not induce homicidal urges.” “What’s a little homicide between best buds?” I scoffed. “Where are we going though? I thought the General’s office was downstairs?” “It is,” Vadim replied, leading me into a small brick building. “We’re just grabbing supplies first; Petrenko's set up shop closer to home now.”
“Ah, Gunnery Sergeant Greek,” Colonel Petrenko, Duty's Quartermaster, nodded when Vadim walked into the building. I followed, and the Colonel inclined his head at me. “And Doctor Markov; nice to see you again. How do you like my new shop?” “Much better than that room in the bunkhouses,” I gave Petrenko a thumbs-up. “Who’s got that little mop-closet now?” “We have a new technician called Magnum,” Petrenko replied. “He's a raging booze-head, but he's good at what he does; he could give that Exo of yours a little clean, no sweat. Took a crack at Woodstock’s gauntlet, did you?” “I became his new yardstick too,” I grinned under my helmet. “Ran right past where the finish line should have been.” Petrenko laughed loudly. “Nice work, Doctor. Now what can I get you boys?”
Vadim stepped up. “I need twelve boxes of 5.56 NATO, and eight Stimpacks.” Petrenko rummaged behind his counter, while Vadim rummaged in his pockets. Roubles went over the counter one way, and cartridges passed in the other direction. Petrenko pocketed Vadim’s money and turned to me. “And for you, Doctor?” I passed Petrenko a wad of Roubles. “Five boxes of 7.62 for my SCAR, a box of .50 for my tank-stopper here, two Scientific Stimpacks, and as many M203 rounds as you have in stock.” “Jesus,” Petrenko passed my hefty purchase over the counter. “Planning an assault on the Duga Radar? That’s a lot of lead.” “I’ll let the General tell you what we’re doing later,” I smirked, pocketing my loot before turning to Vadim. “Where’s Chevchenko?”
“Mikhail’s at the Bar,” Vadim shook his head. “That trooper at the gate recognised him from a mission he did with the Anarchists and refused to let him into the base. That’s why I bought so much ammo; half of it’s for him.” Vadim and I took our purchases from Petrenko’s shop and left the Duty base, heading towards the Hundred Rads bar. After getting the cold shoulder from a Duty trooper standing guard at the base’s admin building door, we resolved to see General Voronin the next day. Walking through Rostok, I let out a deep sigh, fogging up my helmet visor for a second. Vadim looked over and smirked under his mask. “You need a hand carrying the weight of the Zone on your shoulders over there?”
“Nah,” I shrugged. “I’m honestly curious to see what’s going to happen with this. I mean, come on; an unexplored lab that no one can open without getting Zombified? This is pure scientific gold! It’s just…” I trailed off, and Vadim waved his hand, prompting me on. I sighed heavily again. “Fine; I just don’t want to get my hopes up, you know? Knowing the Zone’s sense of irony, this ‘lab’ might be nothing except a dirty old closet someone left a Death Lamp inside of.” “Ah,” Vadim nodded. “So it’s the not knowing that’s getting in your head. That makes sense.” My comrade paused for a second. “What’s a Death Lamp? Something tells me you wouldn’t find it on someone’s nightstand.”
“Well you know me, Greek; I’m a big fan of artifacts,” I replied. “That being said, you couldn’t pay me to put my hands on one of those things.” I pulled out my notebook and flipped to the section on different artifacts, clearing my throat.“The Death Lamp is the most dangerous and useless Artifact the Zone creates. Most Artifacts give their users some obvious advantage; tougher skin, night vision, toxic resistance and psychic awareness are all valuable skills to be given in such a dangerous environment as the Zone. The Death Lamp does none of these things. This Artifact makes the carrier more vulnerable to everything the Zone can throw their way, from causing blindness, to making the user’s bones so brittle they could shatter their ribcage with a sneeze. Not to mention it’s the most radioactive Artifact ever recorded. The most accurate way I can describe this Artifact is as a pustulent, engorged leech, sucking away on the leg of life.
“Charming, Markov,” Vadim rolled his eyes as I flipped the page to a drawing of a bright red crystal-like formation. I returned the eye-roll and kept reading. “Following that, don’t play at being a detective in the Zone unless you actually know what you’re doing. I got paired up with a Freedomer who was tasked with finding a missing Stalker. We turned his room upside down and found a Death Lamp. I didn’t know what it was at the time, but something about that red lump of anomalous matter set every one of my senses on edge; unfortunately the Freedomer was either too dumb or too high to notice. He insisted the artifact had nothing to do with the missing Stalker, before he picked it up with his bare hand, keeled over and burst into a cloud of red dust. That case was solved rather quickly. The Death Lamp disappeared after it killed the Freedomer, so the ‘why’ is another mystery, but I’m staying far away from that one.
“Well,” Vadim shook his head as we walked down the stairs leading into the bar. “If we find one of those, I’ll be sure to give it to…uh, never mind.” My comrade trailed off; I wanted to pry, but the voice of the bar’s doorman interrupted my train of thought. “Are you Markov?” “Yeah, why?” I turned to the man, who scowled under his balaclava. “Your fucking squadmate is making a big fuck-off scene downstairs. Something about liquor being his only friend or some such other sad pathetic bullshit. Go fetch that asshole before Barkeep calls for last call because of him; my shift’s almost over, and I want some fucking vodka.” I turned to Vadim in surprise, when the doorman snapped his fingers in my face. “I said come in; don’t stand there!”

Vadim and I made it downstairs, where the “scene” we found could have been called a regular Tuesday. A few barstools lay on their sides around the place, Stalkers still sat at the tables talking amongst themselves, and as usual, Barkeep stood behind the counter, surveying his domain the way a king may survey the peasants under his rule. Mikhail was slumped over the bar, twirling a mostly-empty bottle of Cossacks vodka around his outstretched finger. “Hey-hey Mark’v,” Mikhail slurred, barely managing to lift his head. “An’ Greek! Le’s do some shots! I got s’me new bes’ friends here for us t’play wit’!” Vadim tried to get Mikhail to lift himself off the bar; I made eye contact with Barkeep and very deliberately shook my head, pointed at Mikhail and drew one finger across my own neck.
To his credit, Barkeep interpreted my actions as “He’s cut off,” rather than “Cut his head off.” Barkeep snatched away Mikhail’s tumbler of vodka and pushed a small white cup in front of him. “See this?” the large man rumbled. “This is your new best friend. Its name is ‘Coffee’ and it really wants to get to know you right now.” Mikhail recoiled from the smell coming off the tiny cup. To be fair, I didn’t exactly blame him; the steam coming off it could have peeled the paint off the walls of Arnie’s Arena, from all the way down here.“ Christ,” Vadim coughed. “When did we get a shipment of Cuban coffee in here?” Barkeep grinned. “This is my secret mix. It’s called ‘Barkeep’s Special Drink-Your-Stupid-Ass-Sober-and-Go-Fix-Your-Fucking-Problems Brew.’” “Bit of a mouthful,” I mused. “Maybe just call it ‘The Reality Check?’”
“But I wanna talk t’my other friend s’more,” Mikhail slurred. “The one called ‘I wanna drink till I pass out on the coun’er.’” “Okay then,” Vadim patted me on the shoulder. “You take this one, bratukha.” I gave Vadim the finger as he walked down to the other end of the bar. I slid the cup closer to Mikhail’s face with a stern look; he slid it back. I frowned and pushed the cup back farther under Mikhail’s reddened nose. “Either drink it or wear it, blyadj,” I snapped. “The result will be the same anyway.” “Why’d’ya even give a shit anyway?” Mikhail groaned. I rolled my eyes. “I need my whole team healthy, sober and battle-ready; that includes you, blockhead. Now drink the fuck up.”
Mikhail tossed back the cup of coffee like a shot glass, and immediately twisted his face so hard I thought he pulled a muscle. “Yob tvoyu matj!” he coughed, eyes streaming. “What the fuck was that, diesel?! That could knock a Pseudogiant off its fucking knuckles, blyadj!” “That’s part of the appeal; look how fast it sobered you up,” Barkeep chuckled. Mikhail coughed again. “It also might kill me! I wasn’t drunk anyway!” “Right,” I rolled my eyes. “If you weren’t drunk, I’m not a scientist studying the most dangerous environment known to man. Pull the other one; it’s got a fucking bellend on it.”
“I’m sorry,” Mikhail eventually sighed. “I’m just fucking tired.” I leaned over the bar and accepted a single vodka shot of my own. “Tired of what?” Mikhail shook his head. “Doesn’t matter; it’s not your problem.” “Well, I’m not making it my problem, unless you’re comfortable with telling me,” I replied, downing my shot. “However, I do need you healthy before we all go down to that lab. We have no idea what’s going to be down there, and we need to be ready for anything, okay? Can we take a rain check on your breakdown?” Mikhail nodded slowly; I gave him a thumbs-up. “Right then. Let’s get you to a bunk. We’ve got a busy, potentially deadly day tomorrow.” Mikhail didn’t protest as I led him out of the bar, giving the finger to the door attendant behind the metal bars on the way out.

2020.12.21 13:31 itallhurtsVIDedition COVID19 never coughed but I'm almost at 4 weeks

40F 5'7 160lbs white American non-smoking asthmatic using albuterol inhalers & nebulizer prn. Taking Singular & Symbicort. Have barrett's esophagus & ulcer Dexilent in morning, Pepcid 40 midday, & Prevavid before bed. I have Crohn's but also suffer severe constipation so so I'm on Linzess & was in pelvic PT prior to Quar2020. Had full hysterectomy at 34 due to endometriosis, still have ovaries though prone to cysts. On spironolactone for acne which happened after hysterectomy also using clindamycin gel, Retin A, Finacea.
I've had 3 glasses of wine since February 2020 and I've never tried a single recreational drug, though I'm considering it if I could get it.
All my joints hurt so bad. Every joint in my hands, feet, wrists, hips, knees, you get what I'm saying all of them. Also, I feel like I have been shot on the thighs multiple times but I haven't been shot with a paintball in over 20 years.
This began around 11/20, I tested positive for COVID-19 on 11/23/20. My main symptoms were nausea and vomiting, horrid joint pain everywhere, the paintballs to the thighs, horrid headaches, easy to tire, forgetfulness & loss of appetite. I lost 19 lbs over 3 weeks because I could hold down no food, local ER said as long as I was getting in fluids and urinating not to come in or worry & to call if I become short of breath. I bought 2 pulse oximeters back in February and maintained between 93% & 97%. I never ran a fever. I took Zofran ODT and phenergan for the nausea.
I'm now able to hold down oatmeal, grits, a modified BRATT because bananas and applesauce make me puke any and all the time. I loathe them both. Drinking coconut water.
My question is: how long does the pain and memory issues continue? When I took Topamax for weight loss a decade ago I had issues with recall of words I know that I know and answering simple questions. It's happening again said Topamax. My husband says I stare blankly midsentence as I search for the next part which may or may not come. And I haven't been comfortable in any position for so long now, I just want to sleep comfortably for 1 night.
My husband(31) and 80+yr old grandparent that lives with us got it and they both had 3 days of coughing, headache, loss of taste and smell, and tiredness and then they were all better. Here I am almost 4 weeks later and still miserable.
Any clues how long this could continue? What could make me feel better? My PCP gave me Zanaflex but it just makes me sleepy while I continue to hurt. I've taken Tylenol until limits but I cannot take antinflammatories due to other health problems.
Please have seen other folks having these symptoms and some insight into it because I'm miserable.

2020.05.22 12:15 LilBabyBenson Demigod Chess - Part 1: Planning

(Posting early so everyone has a chance to RP)
In the evening hours, while everyone else headed to dinner, Jessie ran off to get her game ready. After dinner, she could be found at the edge of the forest, standing in front of two tables. Each table had sets of armor along with standard issued weapons. During sign-ups, she had told everyone not to bring their own armor to this event.
“Hey everyone!” She greeted as campers began to gather. “If you don’t know me by now… shame on you.” She teased with a small chuckle. “All kidding aside, my name is Jessie Benson. I am the Assistant Activities Director, and have come up with a game I hope you all will enjoy.”
Earlier in the week she had been racking her brain, trying to come up with something more challenging than the scavenger hunt she did. Something that would give everyone combat practice, but also challenge everyone to strategize. You wouldn’t believe the number of paper wads that ended up in the trash.
When all hope seemed lost, she saw a chessboard in her room. She remembered playing with her dad, who would always beat her, and how much fun she used to have. It wasn’t until she began to learn strategy did she start to hold her own. Somehow that sparked an idea in her head and Demigod Chess was born.
“The game is called Demigod Chess.” She announced with a smile. “Don’t worry, we won’t be playing on a board, nor will your movement be restricted to one space at a time. I just drew inspiration from the objective of the game.” She then went on to explain the rules of the game.

How this works

Each team is dressed in simple greek armor with a colored plume, either white or black to distinguish teams. Campers were instructed they would be leaving their own weapons and magical items behind, unless instructed otherwise. Using such would be a disqualification for the entire team.
This game is similar to capture the VIP, if you have ever played paintball or similar games. Much like in chess, the object of the game is to capture the other team’s captain. First team to do this is declared the winner.
It will be up to the captain to determine the strategy that they want to use and assign roles. There will be a thread for each team to discuss strategy, followed by a post later on for the actual game. This will give everyone a chance to RP out the strategy before the actual fighting begins.

Players

The captain represents the ‘king’. The king is unarmed and otherwise defenseless. Instead of a greek helmet with a plume, the king gets to wear a crown.
Each team will choose a ‘queen’ to represent their team. The queen is allowed to use their own weapons and magical items, thus giving them an advantage on the battlefield.
Next up come the ‘knights’. The captain will choose four of these. Their objective will be to protect the king, and are armed with a spear, shield, and shortsword. The captain may choose to use all of them for defense, but can have no more than four guards.
Lastly are the ‘pawns’. All of these players will be armed only with standard issue swords. Not as effective, but if used properly they can still do some damage.

Teams

Below is a list of the teams:
Black Team
Captain: Victor Santillan
White Team:
Captain: Lexi Londyn
Once she had gone over the rules, Jessie gestured for campers to start putting on their armor. She still continued to talk over them. “The entire woods are the boundaries. Zephyros’ Creek will serve as a divider to start. Victor, since you have the Zeus kids, you can take the side with Zeus’ fist.”
“I will be serving as field medic and referee. Try not to maim each other, or worse….” y!F Katrina She felt like she was forgetting something, but didn’t know what. Then it clicked. “Oh! You are allowed to use your powers. If you are defeated and surrender, you are out of the game, similar to chess. Good luck everyone!”
With that she dismissed the campers to go their separate ways to begin planning. Once they had adequate time, Jessie would sound the horn for the game to begin.
OOC disclaimer: Captains were chosen based on answers and whether or not they were my alt had been captain in previous games. Teams were then chosen through an OOC draft by those captains. Hope you all enjoy :)

2018.01.23 23:49 TeeRoy_Jenkinz 7 Constructive Ideas for Making Destiny 2 more than Destiny 1 Re-Skinned

Apologies in advance, there is a lot here. Once you scroll down for an ungodly amount time, you may eventually reach a TL;DR. I've tried to make this entertaining if you choose to actually read this.
Unfortunately, I currently write you as someone who has peeled back from my Destiny habit due to the current state of the game. I will admit, I have always been critical of this game since D1 Vanilla, but I find that I am that way because I am willfully invested and care about its potential.
I write this neither as a scathing review, nor as a clear guide to what could have been or will be. I write this to contribute my 2 cents after 2,329 Hours (according to wastedondestiny) about 7 changes I think this franchise needs to be more than a re-skin of its former self.
1. Screw the Story-stuff, focus on Secrets and Intricate Puzzles (that aren't time-gated, just well-hidden)
If it's impossible to make enough content for everyone to consume on a developer-friendly pace and fit within the Bungie mythos of being ambiguous, IMO, the best remedy is making the game heavy on secrets and puzzles.
I know. I've seen Barrett's twitter reply to someone asking if we will get more things like black spindle or outbreak prime and he said yes. What I'm suggesting is that the game go heavily into this. This allows the devs to come up with minimal, yet high quality, content that then puts the burden on the community to hive-mind and solve. This not only solves certain community sentiment issues because it will give the community so many outlets for discussion and feedback of experience, it will give far more opportunities for the youtubers and streamers to stick with the game, make content, and keep peoples interest in the game. Think about all of the good will that comes from finding a secret that remained hidden in a game for 5+ years.
I can already see the person from Bungie slapping their forehead reading this because they have the 'stats that say most people barely complete the campaign so we focus our efforts on what most people will play'. While I understand the logic, it just reinforces that statistic when you choose to focus on bite-sized campaigns and not on re-playable endgame. No one will keep playing if there is no incentive; hence the state of the game.
I don't know about many of you, but I feel like my intelligence is willfully being disrespected when Bungie feels like they need to make this game for the lowest common denominator. There is a reason Hurt Locker won best picture over Avatar (Sorry, if you don't watch movies).
Most people I have ever played Destiny with are smart, and enjoy when their gaming experience surprises them and loath when a game gets redundant and predictable.
The last thing I want to see, is that we swing the entirely different direction and Bungie feels obligated to tell us that 'there is Black Spindle type stuff in this release, hope you find it and you're happy about it'. I want this game to move towards satisfying the 'explorer'-itch of my gaming experience, and I don't think the one-off Outbreak-prime and hidden ghosts will be enough to do that.
Some may disagree with this premise because it would 'force them to participate in the community outside of the game', but IMO, this is not a bad thing. It was what helped cement Destiny 1 as a great game. The community outside the game is what elevated the game to heights few games achieve. It would also drive more people into clans, escpecially since clans could become more 'specialized' given the new aspect of exploring with so many secrets.
2. Speaking of Clans, let people join more than one.
It may cause a re-work of how rewards are thought about, but I think being able to join a clan with my close friends (who are extremely casual), while having a PVP clan, and hardcore raid clan on the side would be great. Too often I find that I've added a person to my friends list only to forget which activity I played with them, so I don't message them at all. If we were able to casually join mutual groups more often, it may lead to more positive community interaction.
3. Go bigger than 6 Player PvP and PvE.
Disclaimer: this one is a huge amount of speculation because I am completely unaware of the technical limitations of the game engine to support a certain amount of characters on-screen.
If possible, to enhance the 'POWER FANTASY' we are all missing in this space-magic-filled-looter-shooter, I want to see a hoard of 30-40, 50, 60, maybe over 100 enemies spill out in front of me and I have the power to mow them down quickly and in style.
Being killed by a trickle stream of trash mobs every few feet gets dull really fast. Knowing that I'm 1 guardian taking on an entire army that's trying to ambush me is a bit lost in this game. There's always just a steady stream of a manageable 8-15 enemies to kill before the next set of 8-15 come in. Warframe does a good job of this; your character is nimble, with powerful abilities and powerful weaponry that decimates enemies in hoards with cool physics interactions. Destiny feels good shooting the gun, but the visceral reaction on the other half of the shot is supremely lacking.
Ok, now lets say we can't have our cake and eat it too, so power of weapons and abilities has to stay relatively where it is right now, I think I'd enjoy having more players on screen playing with me, if possible. During the Destiny 1 Beta, the Devils Lair strike was playable, and I recall that I went in with a few other buddies and when we landed that first area had what felt like at least 12-15 other guardians running around while an 'enemy was moving against each other' event took place. We disregarded the objective marker and just started shooting away and using all of those crazy abilities on what seemed like an overwhelming large hoard of NPC enemies. It was epic, and the only time I've felt that in this game (having that happen during the beta before release was like doing heroin; you're chasing that first high again and again despite knowing its not there). I think if we got 8 man strikes and eventually 12 man raids, it would be quite special and highly revered.
So, long story short, having more guardians around me, synergizing abilities makes me feel powerful. Therefore, I think if its possible to offer PvP modes that are maybe 8v8 or larger, I would be all over it. Additionally, more eccentric games modes like oddball or combined arms (with vehicles that allow more than 1 player to ride at a time) would go a long way towards keeping me enthusiastic about PvP over the long haul. Heck, if Destiny could incorporate a smaller version of Battle Royale, I think that would have massive potential (imagine a 20+ player drop-in to a large PvP map where you have to go find abilities, grenades, super energy, and weapons. I'd play that.)
4. Mini-games.
I wrote long ago on bungie.net (after playing D1 Beta) about my idea for how ships could be more meaningful and contribute gameplay. I didn't know at the time that Ubisoft held a patent on 'gameplay during loading screens' for its Assassins Creed franchise, but has since been opened up for use under Creative Commons.
To me, I see potential for 'Heroic Patrols' by virtue of instituting an 'asteroids-lite' 2D arcade space shooter. If you eliminate all enemies holding the line in orbit of your destination, you trigger Heroic Patrolling, wherein 'backup' has been called in and Elites and larger roaming forces await you. And to RPG it up, each ship can have its own set of weaponry or abilities that help aid in the minigame.
On the other side of how mini-games could work would be to enable 6 man patrolling, so there could be player-driven games they come up with on their own (i.e. HAGS/Zombie Tag, etc), there could be minigame beacons to start up a Sparrow race, Speedball/Paintball match, Disc Golf course, or even a runway for a 'walk-off'/emote competition between friends.
5. No down weeks.
There is no Iron Banner this week. Even though Faction Rally was underwhelming, at least it was something. Now we have nothing but the base game for a week or more until a new event arises. Eververse was implemented, according to Deej in its reveal, to "bolster the service provided by [the] Live team". With the Eververse store as prevalent as it is, the Live team should have something new for us to do weekly. We should be getting to a point where Iron Banner isn't the only thing happening for the week; there needs to be a combination of events going on at any one time.
Even if its something as dumb as 'fashion week', it's at least something for people to talk about and goof around with. It's better than going back to just the Vanilla experience.
6. Kinetic/Energy/Power vs Primary/Special/Heavy
I'm baffled that someone at Bungie said 'this is more fun'. This change was a huge contributing factor to the lack of power fantasy right now. Not being able to use Shotguns, Snipers, and Fusion Rifles as freely hits the power fantasy hard in both PvE and PvP. Especially with a team-shot meta in PvP like it is, having a special like a shotgun, fusion, or sniper to quickly take a dude out and equalize the fight was essential to the highlight gameplay of D1. D2 neutered that by essentially forcing 2 primaries and combo of heavy with special.
From a lore perspective, this is assholish. How can I go from being known for fusion rifling someone and then releasing a Gjallarhorn shot if D2 says that can't happen because both of those weapons take up the same slot.
The restrictions by Bungies devs to 'force players to play how we think they should play our game' is something we've always dealt with by Bungie and I hope they can see that we are finally getting fed up with it. They need to learn that if you want to get people to play a certain way, incentivize it (e.g. "Pen Mightier than Sword" Medal; defeated 'heavily-armed' guardian with Primary; +25 points), don't nerf the alternate strategies.
7. Transmogrification & Re-Tooling
A large part of playing Destiny is making my character look the way I want him to look while retaining the stats I want for him and his ability set. Right now, D2 prevents this and forces players to look the same if they want a Resilience Recovery build.
We need options to make sure our gear is min-maxed the way we want, while also retaining the style the player wants.
Beyond that, I think it would be beneficial if players were able to get more perk variance without having to fully re-implement random rolls. My idea would be to have a way to designate a piece of gear for one of its perks and have method for eventually dismantling it to retain the perk and slot it onto a weapon or gear piece of your choice. The same idea could extend to existing slotted mods; make a path of 'chores' to do in order to retain the designated perk or mod off of a piece of loot.
TL;DR * Most future content should be puzzle-based and well-hidden/lore-integrated. This promotes 'exploring' of a game currently devoid of reasons to explore. * Allow for more clan affiliations that are more specialized; so we can have a clan for Crucible, a clan for blind raiding, and a clan of close casual-playing friends. * Either give us ways to fight and kill way more enemies at once, or put more of us on a team together to synergize power. * Mini-games are an excellent platform to have the Live team R&D and Beta test at the same time. They don't have to be full features, they are just one-off things to promote fun and goofy interactions between friends and fellow guardians. * Compounding events so they overlap would make the game feel more 'alive'. There is no reason Iron Banner and Faction Rally can't exist during the same week. * Revert back to Primary/Special/Heavy loadout configuration. This will enhance PvP encounters given team-shot meta. This also prevents lore conflicts. And it gives us back a sorely missed archetype: LMGs. * More freedom is needed when it comes to min-maxing a character and making them look the way you want them to look, and making them play you want them to play. Transmog for gear and Perk Swap for weapons could go a long way towards rectifying this.
That's 7 ideas I think are within reason for Bungie to consider. What are your thoughts on these ideas? Are you in favor? Or are these unrealistic?
Here's to hoping we all get the game we wanted in the end.

2015.07.15 09:58 mikestp Letter to your local minister about the NFA.

I took the following from the Ozzie Reviews facebook page, if any of this strikes a cord with you in light of the recent shitstorm cause by the Adler shotgun please add your details and forward it to the relevant minister:
This is the single most important post that I have ever done since the start of Ozzie Reviews. I have spent a week researching and formulating the following template letter. I have tried my absolute best to formulate the letter to voice the frustrations of licensed law-abiding firearm owners that the media refuses to acknowledge and make publicly known. I am sitting here today to ask each and every one of you to submit this letter to your local Police Minister, local Federal Member and the Federal Justice Minister. I am asking you to join me and stand-and-fight against the victimisation, demonisation and continual blame that we have been subjected to whenever a criminal uses a firearm for illegal purposes.
I have had enough and I am not willing to accept any more blame for other people’s actions. I have drawn a line in the sand and refuse to accept any of the proposed restrictions that aim to take our pump and lever action firearms away, reduce magazine capacities, ban our firearms based on cosmetic appearance and disarm us as each year goes on. You do not have to be a firearm owner to submit this letter, if you have family members, relatives or friends that support licensed law-abiding firearm ownership, please ask them to make a submission. The fight doesn’t stop with just letters, don’t be afraid to make an appointment with your local State and Federal members and discuss your concerns. Remember it is we-the-people that elected our politicians and it is their job to represent you.
I know there will be some apathetic shooters who truly believe that the 1996 gun laws have worked, contrary to the evidence shown through the facts and statistics over the years. I know a lot of them are of the allusion that if you agree with the Government, that they will leave you alone, let you just enjoy your passion for shooting. In reality though, that can’t be any further from the truth, as we are now faced with having to surrender our pump and lever action firearms if these proposals are not fought. Then when they have them and a few more years pass by, we will see tighter calibre restrictions on our bolt actions, greater magazine restrictions on our bolt actions and then we will see their true agenda come out when they then say “we need your bolt-action firearms to ensure public safety”.
If you are happy to remain renting your firearms from the Government until the day comes when you have to surrender them, you might as well hand the lot in now. If you actually want to ensure that your children and your grandchildren can continue to enjoy the freedom of legal private firearm ownership, I am urging you to do everything in your power to ensure that it possible. I can’t do anything more than what I have done by providing template letters, encouraging people to get into shooting through the reviews I do and trying to spread the word that we need to speak up as one. Please don’t let me down, join me and let’s see how much change we can achieve by submitting this letter. Already there has been swift moves behind the scenes to introduce these restrictive proposals in Bills across Australia within a few weeks. We must act immediately!

12 July 2015
Dear Minister,
My name is (insert) and I am (insert) years of age. I am currently licensed to use Category (select: A B C D H M R) firearms and I am a member of the (select: Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA), National Rifle Association of America (NRA), Shooter Union or any other gun club). I have been safely using firearms since I was (insert) years old and I currently use firearms for (select: sports/target shooting, recreational shooting, occupational shooting, security duties, law-enforcement etc).
I understand that the Federal Attorney Generals Department (AGs) are currently working with representatives from the Firearm Licensing branches from the various State and Territory Police, Customs, Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Department of Defence (DoD), on further restrictions to be implemented via an overhaul of the National Firearms Agreement 1996 (NFA). The AGs report entitled “The ability of Australian law enforcement authorities to eliminate gun-related violence in the community” goes on to outline what they believe a technical review of the NFA should involve. Specifically:
· Address State differences in “different lengths of licences and different requirements that need to be met to own and possess Category D firearms”.
· Address inconsistencies “in areas not covered by the NFA, such as in relation to firearm parts, accessories, magazines and firearm dealers.”
· “the accountability of deactivation standards and agreed firearm descriptors.”
· “take into account the changes in technology and the legal firearms market that have occurred since 1996.” · “regulation of magazines, firearm parts and accessories”
· “principles for dealing with interstate transactions, particularly dealers operating in more than one State or Territory”
· “the classification of new technology with regards to:
· “more explicit guidance on the NFA’s genuine reasons for owning, possessing or using a firearm (the genuine reasons), and”
· “technological changes with respect to the issuing of licences and permits to acquire.”
· “There is no basis to recommend any update of the remaining elements of the NFA to expand the list of genuine reasons or changing the requirements for licensing.”
I have also been advised that the recommended changes will be developed without consultation and in closed session by the Firearm and Weapons Policy Working Group (FWPWG) chaired by the AGs Department. The reason I am writing to you, is to urge you not to support any of these restrictions on licensed firearm owners and for you to raise and support the following points with the AGs committee currently reviewing the NFA.
The push for further gun control is unfortunately fueled by emotion-based statements and rarely does it examine any facts or statistics, mainly because the facts and statistics do not support restrictions on law-abiding firearm owners. One of the biggest misleading statements in Australia, is that our 1996 gun laws have prevented mass shootings and as a result, our homicide rate with a firearm has declined due to the implementation of these laws.
This statement is not supported by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC), who record that homicide with a firearm in 1995 = 59 deaths, 1996 (which includes Port Arthur) = 98, 1997 = 75, 1998 = 54, 1999 = 61, 2000 = 59, 2001 = 49, 2002 = 42, 2003 = 38, 2004 = 33, 2005 = 26, 2006 = 46, 2007 = 34, 2008 = 31, 2009 = 30, 2010 = 39, 2011 = 41 and 2012 = 44. The statistics clearly show that there has been an average downward trend from pre-96 and it continues on the same average downward spiral to the present day with a few spikes. If the downward spiral was due to the implementation of the 96 gun laws, why was the previous year in 1995 only 59 deaths or why was there an increase of 20 deaths from 2005 to 2006?
The AIC further state that firearm use has declined by more than half since 1989-90 as a proportion of homicide methods, and there has been an upward trend in the use of knives and sharp instruments, which in 2006-07 accounted for nearly half of all homicide victims. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) the 1996 gun buy-back cost the Australian tax payer just over 304 million dollars ($304 368 776 to be exact) and according to the statistics, there has been no change to the already downward spiral of gun homicide.
Another misleading statement is that the buyback cut firearm suicides by 74 per cent, saving 200 lives a year, according to research published in The American Law and Economics Review. Interestingly, the ABS statistics reveal that the total suicide rate Australia-wide, has actually increased in that time which supports the fact that the NFA has done nothing to lower total suicide rates. It further supports that you cannot prevent suicide simply by prohibiting firearms.
Further to this, in Australia in 2012, a total of 2535 people committed suicide, 1379 by hanging, 582 by poisoning, 173 by firearms, 166 by other methods, 112 by falls, 79 with sharp objects and 44 by drowning. These statistics prove that despite the 1996 gun laws, suicide rates are on the increase. If all firearms were banned, it would still have no effect on the total number of suicides, as that has been increasing via other methods since the 1996 gun laws were introduced. Suicide is the key element that needs to be addressed, not the methods, as the method is the final stage where a person feels that he or she are beyond help. The focus, in my view, should be on suicide prevention, not attempting to ban only one of the methods of suicide, being firearms. If the Government is genuinely concerned with suicide methods, what initiatives are they taking to keep rope and poisons out of the hands of potential suicidal persons? This statement is just as unrealistic as saying that we need to ban firearms in order to prevent suicide rates.
Another common statement used to justify further restrictions on licensed firearm owners, is that firearms in the hands of licensed shooters are a threat to themselves and others. This is also not supported by the ABS, who state that in Australia in 2012, there were 4 accidental deaths with firearms, the lowest of any other method. The ABS further provides statistics that in the same year, there were 1997 accidental deaths by falls, which means that you were 500 times more likely to die accidentally by falling, than by using a firearm in 2012. Could you please provide justification to further restrict and ban firearms from the law-abiding when firearm accidents are the lowest recorded of all methods?
Regardless of what laws and restrictions are implemented, it is impossible to completely eliminate gun-violence in the community. This fact was actually supported by ex-Prime Minister John Howard in 1996 who said “Now I don't pretend for a moment ladies and gentlemen that the decision that we have taken is going to guarantee that in the future there won't be other mass murders. I don't pretend that for a moment”. Therefore the fear that members of the legal firearm community have is what we have seen previously, and that is, continual restrictions year-to-year in the name of eliminating gun-violence. As the statistics prove, even with the heaviest restrictions on licensed firearm owners, it is impossible to achieve this. The restrictions of the NFA target licensed firearm owners only and they have no impact on criminals.
In New Zealand, firearms licenses are granted for a period of 10 years, long arms are not required to be registered, semi-automatic firearms are freely available for both sports and recreational use and there is no Permit to Acquire (PTA) system or waiting periods for licence holders. Yet a 2011 study that compared long-term firearm homicide trends in “three countries with similar social histories but different legislative regimes: Australia, Canada, and New Zealand,” concluded that “the most pronounced decline in firearm homicide over the past two decades occurred in New Zealand. New Zealand has a lower murder rate with firearms than Australia, which proves that the only requirement to ensure public safety is a licensing system for firearm owners, not continual and greater restrictions year-to-year that we are subjected to here in Australia.
I would like an explanation as to why there is even any significant discussion being held and ultimately funding being focused towards the banning and restriction of firearms from law-abiding licensed firearm owners? There is no evidence to support that licensed firearm owners are responsible for any gun-related violence in the community. I am personally offended that the AGs proposals to ‘eliminate gun-related violence in the community’ include and even mention licensed firearm owners, where the entire focus should be directed to those responsible – the unlicensed criminal.
These statistics are evidence that the NFA has failed the Australian community in general. If the NFA was a success, we wouldn’t have experienced the Monash University shooting in 2002 nor would we have had the Lindt Café siege in 2014, where the offender Man Monis, was unlicensed and was using an unregistered pump-action shotgun that was banned in 1996 from sports and recreational use. We have approximately 800 000 licensed law-abiding firearm owners in Australia and the statistics do not support or warrant any further restrictions on us. I firmly believe that licensed shooters should be actually rewarded for their years of law-abiding behavior, not continually be punished with unjustifiable restrictions. I would like to request that the following changes are implemented to the NFA:
1) Removal of PTAs. Currently in order to acquire a firearm, a licence holder must pay a fee to the State Police Firearms Registry and be issued with a PTA. This process is completely unnecessary and does nothing for public safety. If a person has already gone through the required police background checks to be granted a firearms licence, why is there a need to get permission to then purchase a firearm, when you are already licensed for that category of firearm? It serves no purpose and is simply a revenue raising procedure that has nothing to do with public safety. This was proven in the recent firearm amnesty in Queensland in 2013, where an unregistered firearm could be immediately registered to your licence via a licensed dealer recording the details on a Form 10. The only requirement was that the licence holder must be licensed for the category of firearm that was being acquired. This process was successful and proved that the PTA system is not required to maintain public safety. In Queensland now, there is also a like-for-like system, which allows a licensed person to swap a registered firearm at a licensed dealer, for an identical type of firearm without the need for a PTA. This implementation is further proof that the PTA system is not required to ensure public safety. If a person is licensed for a category of firearm, it makes no sense that they would then need to obtain permission to acquire a firearm that they are already licensed to possess. It would be the same as requiring a driver who holds a car licence, to seek permission before they can acquire and use a car. What would the purpose of the licence be if this were required? It simply undermines the purpose of having a licence in the first place.
2) Removal of firearm registration. In July 2014, New Zealand Police Minister Anne Tolley stated “there is no evidence to show that registering individual firearms will give greater protection to the community”. ( http://tvnz.co.nz/…/judge-pushes-tough-new-gun-control-laws… ) Registration of firearms has never been proven anywhere in the world to reduce the criminal use of firearms. The Australian statistics that I have already provided also support this view, as you can clearly see that it has made no impact on the criminal usage of firearms. Interestingly in Canada, the Government scrapped the firearm registry in 2011 due to the registry costing more than 1 billion dollars to establish in 1995 and the ongoing annual costs estimated to be about 22 million dollars. The Canadian Government says that it is wasteful and ineffective at reducing crime and targets law-abiding gun owners instead of criminals, who don't register their firearms. ( http://www.cbc.ca/…/10-things-to-know-about-scrapping-the-l… ) Upon acquiring a new firearm, the relevant State Firearms Registry is required to provide an updated firearms list of all firearms registered to that licence. I have personally seen delays of up to 1 year for a firearm to be registered to a person’s firearm licence. Firearm owners are told that registration is for public safety, yet in this same scenario, if Police were required to attend a licence holder’s address, they would have no idea that the person was in possession of the firearm due to the delays in registering them against a person’s licence. Please justify or provide me with any evidence that proves firearm registration does anything for public safety?
3) Re-classification of Category-C and Category-D firearms for the genuine reason of sports, target and recreational use. As already proven in New Zealand, licensed shooters have access to semi-automatic rimfire and centrefire rifles as well as semi-automatic shotguns for sports, target and recreational use. New Zealand statistics prove that we in Australia have a higher murder rate with firearms despite the heavy unnecessary restrictions outlined in the NFA. Additionally our current firearm laws are an embarrassment to anyone with firearm knowledge and they reinforce that they have nothing to do with public safety. Currently our system allows:
Under Category-A, a licensee can have a 19-round lever action rimfire rifle for sports, target and recreational use, yet a licensee is prohibited from having a 2-round semi-automatic rimfire rifle for the same purpose as it is classified as Category-C.
Under Category-A, a licensee for sports, target and recreational use, can have a double or triple barrel shotgun that can fire 2-3 shots as quickly as you can pull the trigger, yet a licensee is prohibited from having a 2-round semi-automatic shotgun for the same purpose as it is classified as Category-C.
Under Category-A, a licensee for sports, target and recreational use, can have a 7-round lever action shotgun that can fire 7 shots at the same rate as a pump-action shotgun, yet a licensee is prohibited from having a 2-round pump-action shotgun for the same purpose as it is also classed as Category-C.
Under Category-B, a licensee can have a 6-round revolving carbine centrefire rifle for sports, target or recreational use. The rifle can fire 6 shots at the same rate as a semi-automatic centrefire rifle, yet a licensee is prohibited from having even a 2-round semi-automatic centrefire rifle for the same purpose as it is classified as Category-D.
Under Category-H, a licensee can have a 10-round semi-automatic rimfire handgun for sports and target shooting yet the identical handgun with a longer barrel or extended stock is prohibited for the same purpose as it is classified as Category-C.
Under Category-B, a licensee can have a 10-round pump-action centrefire rifle for sports, target and recreational use, yet they can’t have a 2-round pump-action shotgun (Category-C) or a 2-round semi-automatic centrefire rifle (Category-D) for the same purpose.
This proves that licensed law-abiding firearm owners can safely use and own firearms that are comparable to those banned or restricted back in 1996. It does not support that these firearms should also be banned or restricted, as there have been no incidents to justify any such action being forced upon us. It does clearly provide evidence to support licensed firearm owners having greater access to semi-automatic firearms in general.
I am asking for your support on the following re-classification of the firearm categories to be:
Category A
Category B
Category C
Category D
Category H
Currently, the NFA allows Feral Pest Controllers and Primary Producers to use semi-automatic firearms in the control of feral pests. Feral Pest Controllers and Primary Producers are licensed civilians just the same as a licensed civilian who has firearms for sports, target or recreational use. The only difference being is that semi-automatic firearms are prohibited from recreational use. This has had a major environmental impact in Australia. Currently, when a licensed shooter is hunting feral pests with a recreational endorsed licence, they are severely limited on the amount of pest numbers that can be taken in a single encounter. The result is that numerous feral pests escape, only to breed up the following season. In reality, this is an ongoing cost to the Australian economy of approximately 740 million dollars annually according to the University of New England.
The SSAA has attempted to lower the feral pest population with initiatives such as the Farmer Assist program, where a recreational licensed shooter will shoot pests on a farmer’s land for free. The effectiveness of the recreational shooter is once again severely limited due to the prohibition of semi-automatic firearms for that purpose. As proven in New Zealand, semi-automatic firearms in the hands of licensed shooters pose no threat to public safety. If made available on a recreational firearms licence in Australia, we would see greater amounts of feral pest species being controlled and as a result, greater financial benefits to the Australian agricultural economy. We would also see greater numbers of native animals thrive with lower feral pest numbers competing for their food and habitat.
4) Access to firearm suppressors for the genuine reason of sports, target and recreational use. A firearm suppressor, moderator or silencer, is simply a device that acts much the same as a muffler for a motor vehicle. It doesn’t silence a firearm’s shot noise as portrayed in Hollywood movies, it simply reduces the level of the shot noise to make it less alarming to nearby persons. In England the use of firearm suppressors are seen as almost mandatory to be neighborly to persons nearby. In fact, the British Home Office state that “Sound moderators are often used for shooting game, deer, or vermin. In the case of the latter, they might facilitate more effective pest control. They are appropriate for reducing hearing damage to the shooter, or to reduce noise nuisance, for example, for deer control in urban parks, or close to residential properties, or to reduce recoil of the rifle”.

In New Zealand a person does not even require a licence to possess a firearm suppressor, yet they have a lower homicide rate with firearms than Australia as I have already provided statistics for.
New South Wales permits Occupational Shooters such as Feral Pest Controllers to use firearm suppressors to adhere to Workplace Health & Safety requirements in relation to the use of protective equipment. An Occupational Shooter is nothing more than a civilian who is licensed, yet the NFA doesn’t permit non-occupational shooters to use firearm suppressors. There are no statistics to support any reason why firearm suppressors cannot be made available to a licensed firearm owner in Australia. As with any other protective equipment, it should be made widely available, as it could be protecting the hearing of approximately 800 000 licensed shooters Australia-wide.
Access to suppressors also limits the potential complaints from members of the public in relation to noise pollution on accredited rifle ranges. In 2010, the SSAA Brisbane had received a number of complaints from local residents in relation to this issue. Local residents further submitted a petition to reduce range operating hours and requested that noise levels escaping from the range, be no greater than 85 decibels to prevent hearing damage. In situations like these, the access to suppressors provide a workable solution to satisfy the needs of licensed shooters and adhere to concerns of local residents.

On July 1 this year, three licensed shooters were arrested on private property near Logan in Queensland, when a nearby resident phoned police after hearing gun fire. This was a complete over-reaction as the people involved were legally shooting on private property with registered firearms. They were not charged with any offences. In situations where licensed shooters wish to shoot on smaller rural properties, the use of a firearm suppressor could greatly lower the potential of unnecessary complaints due to noise pollution.

5) Category H to include the genuine reason of recreational shooting. Handguns are widely used by Feral Pest Controllers, Veterinarians and Primary Producers. They have a purpose in situations where animals have been trapped, or are injured or sick and need to be euthanized. Currently the standard Category H licence restricts a licensee to using handguns on an accredited range only. There is absolutely no difference to public safety by expanding the use to include recreational shooting as the licensee is already licensed for the handgun, has possession of the handgun and has proven to be a fit and proper person to continue using the handgun. There have been no recorded statistics of Feral Pest Controllers, Veterinarians and Primary Producers causing any mass shootings or other concerns by being licensed to use a handgun other than at an accredited range.
6) Category H nation-wide for the genuine reason of Primary Production and Feral Pest Control. In some States such as New South Wales, handguns are not available for this purpose. A Primary Producer uses a handgun to euthanize sick or injured stock and as protective equipment in and around cattle yards. It provides for ready access to a firearm whilst going about daily chores on the farm without the cumbersome physical restrictions of a rifle or shotgun. Feral Pest Controllers use handguns to humanely dispatch trapped feral pests, to control feral pests in areas where using a rifle or shotgun is not suited and as a backup to their primary firearm. Both Primary Producers and Feral Pest Controllers who are licensed to use handguns cause no threat to public safety. Category H should therefore be made available to occupational licensees nation-wide.
7) 10 year licence for all firearm licence types and categories. In Queensland licensees are granted a 10-year licence for Category A/B firearms. There has been no increased risk to public safety since this implementation and it has streamlined the burden of the renewal process with Weapons Licensing Branch. There is no reason why all firearms licenses, regardless of category, cannot be issued for 10 years. New Zealand has 10-year firearm licences, yet they still have a lower homicide rate with firearms than we do in Australia.
8) Storage requirements to be the same across various licences. Currently under the NFA, if a licensee has a Category C firearm on a firearms licence for feral pest control or primary production, they are required to have the firearm securely stored in a compliant safe. If the licensee was to transfer that same Category C firearm to a collectors licence, they would then be required to temporarily deactivate the firearm by fitting a trigger lock or removing the bolt and then it can be securely stored in the same safe. How can it possibly be justified, in the name of public safety, that storage requirements for the identical same Category C firearm on a collectors licence, are greater than if a licensee was to have the same firearm on a standard firearms licence? This also applies to Category A B and H firearms on a collectors licence. Secure storage for any firearm should be standard across the various types of licences, there is no need for firearms to be temporarily de-activated when they are securely stored in a compliant safe.
9) Removal of the Category D definition of substantially duplicates a Category D firearm is a Category D firearm. Currently the NFA definition of a Category D firearm includes a firearm that substantially duplicates a Category D firearm in function or appearance. This is an outright ban on firearms simply because of their cosmetic appearance alone and it has nothing to do with public safety. A recent example of this in practice, was when NIOA were prohibited from selling a Category B bolt-action rifle in Western Australia that was fitted with a pistol grip stock. The same rifle without the pistol grip stock was permitted, however the one with the pistol grip stock was classed as Category D, despite the fact that it was not semi-automatic, still required to be manually operated as a bolt action and did not change or modify the firing capability or action of the firearm in any way shape or form. It was simply banned on its cosmetic appearance alone. It is impossible to prove that banning or restricting firearms on their cosmetic appearance does anything to support public safety and it therefore needs to be completely removed from the definition of a Category D firearm and from any future proposals.
10) Removal of body armour being classified as a weapon or prohibited item. A ballistic helmet is not currently classed as a weapon in Queensland however a ballistic vest is. A ballistic vest cannot be used as a weapon any more successfully than any other inanimate object. A ballistic vest offers a degree of protection against some small arms calibres and is protective equipment, not a weapon. Ballistic vests and body armour do not require any type of licence in New Zealand and they have no statistics to support that there is any risk to public safety, by civilians having access to them here in Australia. They should be freely available here in Australia as they are designed to save lives not be used as a weapon.
11) Removal of temporarily and permanently inoperable firearm requirements for collectors. Currently a licensee who collects firearms is required to store Category A B C H firearms temporarily inoperable and Category D/R firearms as permanently inoperable. How is it justified in the name of public safety to require A B C H firearms to be stored temporarily de-activated on a collectors licence whereas on a standard firearms licence they are not? As with any collector, whether it be a collector of motor vehicles or any other functioning item, requiring them to be permanently inoperable, immediately removes all the investment value of the item. This is why Category D/R firearms should not be required to be permanently inoperable. In New Zealand, licensed collectors can possess fully operating automatic firearms, yet we still see a lower homicide rate per capita than in Australia. Nor do we see licensed collectors in New Zealand being responsible for mass-shootings, armed robberies or any other gun-related violence in the community.
12) Airsoft firearms to be freely available. Currently Airsoft firearms are used widely in Japan, Europe and the US. They are much the same as paintball and offer participants a safe and fun way to compete in recreational matches. The firearms are prohibited in general in Australia mainly because they have the cosmetic appearance of military firearms and replica definitions. You cannot kill a person with an Airsoft firearm and as such they are classified as a toy in most countries. There is no risk to public safety by permitting Airsoft firearms in Australia.
13) Removal of the requirement for mandatory range attendances for Category H for sports/target shooting. Currently the NFA requires pistol sports shooters to participate in at least 6 competitions per year to retain a pistol licence. If a licensee attends a pistol range twice a year or several times a year, it makes absolutely no difference to public safety. If they are licensed, why should a pistol shooter who is proven to be law-abiding, be required to engage in any minimum number of pistol competitions? How does this enhance public safety? What difference does mandatory competition requirements have on the criminal use of pistols? A licensee should be free to enjoy their legally chosen sport without being discriminated against if they cannot meet Government dictated benchmarks.
14) Stop the suggested re-classification of Category A/B pump and lever-action firearms to Category C. The AGs Department is suggesting the re-classification of Category A/B pump and lever-action firearms to Category C based on so called ‘new technology’ since the implementation of the NFA. This claim of ‘new technology’ is completely false and once again there is no evidence to support the re-classification. Both lever-action shotguns and rifles were available in 1996 at the time of the NFA and were originally designed in the 1800s. This technology is one of the oldest firearm technologies available.
Similarly the most popular pump action rifle in Australia, the Remington 7600, was first made in 1981 and has been safely used by licensed law-abiding shooters since the implementation of the NFA in 1996. There is no evidence or statistics to support restricting or removing these firearms from the hands of licensed shooters in Australia. ( http://world.guns.ru/civil/usa/remington-7600-e.html )
15) Stop the ban of firearms on ballistic performance based on rate of fire and calibre. Currently across Australia we have seen the various State and Territory Firearm Registries attempt to go above and beyond the legislation to prohibit firearms based on ballistic performance. Calibres such as 338 Lapua Magnum, 416 Barrett and 50 BMG are being restricted via prohibiting their use on accredited ranges and denying applications by licensed shooters to use them recreationally on private land. These firearms pose no greater threat in the hands of licensed shooters than any other firearm. Similarly, banning firearms based on rate of fire, magazine capacity and types of ammunition available does absolutely nothing for public safety. This fact was well supported in the recent Senate Inquiry into banning handguns which stated that “It is reasonable to conclude that the banning of certain categories of firearms only affects those who possess and use them lawfully. Those who use them unlawfully are already outside the law”. (http://www.aph.gov.au/…/legcon…/Illicit_firearms/Report.pdf… )
Australian shooters were re-assured in 1996 by John Howard that the idea of the NFA was not to disarm the Australian Community. His words were “I have also heard suggestions, for example, that the whole idea of this is to bring about the complete disarming of the Australian population. I've heard people make suggestions that this is the first step in some kind of march along a road to the deprivation of peoples' individual liberties. I want to say to you ladies and gentlemen that that is a totally unreasonable, it is a totally inaccurate and it is a totally discredited response to the decision that has been taken by the Government”.
Since 1996, I have witnessed directly the opposite to this re-assurance, with greater and greater restrictions being applied to non-semi-automatic firearms and without any incident occurring to justify the restrictions. Licensed law-abiding shooters since 1996 have been subjected to calibre restrictions, magazine restrictions, bans on cosmetic appearances of firearms and tighter regulation on applying for licenses and PTAs, and now, we are being subjected to even more restrictions that target any non-semi-automatic firearm that falls in line with the new catch phrase of “rapid fire weapon”. This new ‘catch phrase’ that Gun Control Australia (GCA) and the AGs Department are using, is designed to set the building blocks for future disarmament by bureaucrats who have no experience or qualifications in firearm use. The dictionary meaning of ‘disarm’ is quite clear “to take weapons from someone or something” and that is exactly what Australian shooters are being subjected to with these proposals, which are in direct contradiction to the purpose of the NFA.
The demonisation of licensed firearm owners appears to be the popular norm and focus of future firearm law reform nowadays. We are treated as if we are the problem, as if we should just accept more restrictions whenever a criminal uses a firearm and comply with blatantly obvious anti-gun firearm laws that have absolutely no effect on criminals in our society. I am submitting that the changes I have outlined in this letter be implemented into the current NFA overhaul. I would further like to request that as part of living in a Democratic society, any proposed changes to the NFA be open to a public consultation process, the same as the recent changes to the Federal Firearm import laws were. I highly object to the recommended changes being developed without consultation and in closed session and request a public consultation. I am asking for your support which will reflect my voting decision at the next State and Federal elections. I am looking forward to your reply and would like to be kept up-to-date with the progress of the NFA changes.
Thank you
