2024.05.21 17:50 justagurI Why restaurants have surcharges?

They don't want to keep updating their menu prices and redoing their menu, as their cost of ingredients and labor can swing wildly from week to week.
I we can assume that the surcharge does occasionally go down or get removed. Or the surcharge goes away but it is absorbed into the increased menu price.
We are in a relatively volatile inflationary period And it doesn't seem like inflation's going anywhere anytime soon
I think it's okay to think of the menu price as the price floor and to expect a surcharge.
Restaurants still have their reputation on the line and can't just be going crazy with surcharges or they would go out of business.
Give them a break. They're probably screwing over a lot less people than the tech company you work for.
Relevant article:
Salum, said the restaurant has relied on its $3.75 surcharge.
“It’s not just for us, it’s an increment of all the expenses, you know, minimum wage, rent,” Rodolfo told Fox affiliate KSWB.
“There’s so many expenses – and everything is going up,” Rodolfo said.
Rodolfo explained even with the surcharge, the steakhouse occasionally doesn’t make a profit.
“It’s not like we’re making so much money – some months you just go even,” he said.

Red Lobster files for bankruptcy. What’s next? Chili’s?
Here is a summary below.
  • Red Lobster, America's largest seafood chain, has filed for bankruptcy.
  • The chain's troubles stem from poor executive decisions, including a failed all-you-can-eat shrimp promotion.
  • Despite the bankruptcy, 580 locations in the U.S. and Canada will remain open, employing about 36,000 workers.
  • Recently, dozens of locations closed abruptly, with their contents auctioned off.
  • CEO Jonathan Tibus attributes Red Lobster's struggles to economic challenges, poor strategic initiatives, and increased competition.
  • Red Lobster has been in decline for a decade due to a shift away from large casual-dining chains.
  • Golden Gate Capital bought Red Lobster from Darden Restaurants 10 years ago, leading to financial strain from new rent obligations.
  • Thai Union Group, the largest shareholder since 2020, is blamed for financial mismanagement and costly exclusive deals.
  • The permanent Ultimate Endless Shrimp promotion caused significant financial losses.
  • Thai Union abandoned its stake in January, pushing Red Lobster towards bankruptcy.
  • Red Lobster has a "stalking horse" bid from its lenders in the Chapter 11 filing.
A week ago I put up a post on how Applebees shut down its restaurants now it seems another middle class restaurant is going out of business with Red Lobster entering bankruptcy. What do y’all think? Coincidence? Or are many more business similar to these are bound to come to a close?

2024.05.21 17:30 No_Tumbleweed_4010 Why are china people so easily enraged?

Case 1: I have a china friend, let's call him Y for now. And today he might had the biggest moodswing I ever seen. FYI, he wanted to start a business but I wasn't supportive because it's a startup and he isn't really smart and his idea is unclear and I didnt believe in him. 2 weeks later, he messaged me asking how am I doing, and I say I am unemployed, and he ask whether do I want a job or not, which I replied yeah, and he show a event road show part-time job which I didn't care about but applied anyway. Later on, I asked, "did you get any job offers about our course of study" he replied back angrily like, "Wtf what kind of question is that I am still waiting for NS", then I say, "I just want to know whether if our classmates got any job offers related to our course". And this is where he got really heated me and say, "you're just a loser", "I have never seen you anything more than a loser" "no goals no ambition no woman no jobs".
Hearing this I was shocked 😯 I didn't know that's what he thinks about me all this time and I instantly blocked him instead of asking what happened 😬
Case 2: With another china friend, let's call him Z for now. Z wants to order Bibimbap from new restaurant, he ask me whether I want to order or not. I replied no. Since I already had Korean/japanese food yesterday, then went other hawker store. Being the indecisive guy I am, I went back to the direction where he's ordering Bibimbap, he ask the same question again, which I replied no.
After we meet back at the table, he ask me again whether I want a Bibimbap, then I told him, "I don't want a Bibimbap, I can always order from this store if I wanted to. Why do you keep asking the same question? Are you stupid" in Chinese. This makes him enraged and he's like, "I am just asking right, don't want then say don't want, why must get mad". Then his stupidity shock me 😯 note that he's not the type to treat food, so when he ask whether I want Bibimbap, he's not trying to treat me, he's asking whether I want to buy. I already answer him thrice and he still won't give up 😂 bruh. I wasn't really mad but really annoyed.
Foolish people make foolish friends it seems. Sigh

2024.05.21 17:20 MasterGanache2012 Scouting a Move: Cities to Visit During a Great Lakes(ish) Road Trip

Hi all, I'm looking for small to midsize cites in or near the Great Lakes region. I currently live in a small, resort beach town in southern, NJ, but I know I don't want to be near the ocean in the future.
Criteria:
* Small to midsize - I know people rave about bigger cities, but they're just too much for me. I lived in Philly for a while and enjoyed it, but I'm not interested in going back to that size of a city. Let's say a maximum around 300K population. I'm willing to bend this for something that has everything else, of course (true of basically every criterium here).
* Proximity to water - Preferably large bodies of water. Significant rivers might do, too--not sure. I like to walk and ruck on the beach or at least on river trails. I've gotten used to being right on the water, but I suppose that's not a strict requirement. I could settle for like a 30-45 drive to the beach.
* Good food - I don't mean good restaurants, though they're a plus, too. I love to cook, so I'd like to be in a place with farmer's markets and decent ethnic grocery stores.
* Live entertainment/art - I love comedy, theater, live music, museums, cool architecture, etc. It doesn't need to be a major touring site or even near one, just as long as there's a good local scene. I'll mention good bookstores and libraries here as well, but I figure that won't be a problem almost anywhere in the size range I'm talking about.
* Access to housing with a yard within range of the city center - I'm a big gardener, so I'd like to be able to eventually buy a house in this area that can have at least a small yard but be somewhat proximate to the city proper. I guess this translates to housing with good growing space within maybe a 30-minute drive, decent parking options, or, better yet, good public transportation.
* Not always cloudy - I don't need to it be warm, but I like to see the sun.
* Youngeat least somewhat diverse population - Where I currently live, nine months of the year the average age is like 60 something, so I think this will be automatic almost anywhere. I'm just looking for somewhere closer to the average of the country.
* Not too far from eastern PA/southern NJ - I've had a lot of family stuff go on in the past five years, so I expect to be needed sometimes--maybe even to facilitate another move away from southern NJ in the future. This is a lower priority, because I understand that what I'm asking for is kind of innately far from family. The closer, the better but far isn't a deal breaker is what I'm saying.
About me, if helpful:
* 28, male, single. I know people talk about smaller metros being harder to find that special someone, but I'm not super interested in dating, so that's not a problem for me.
* Stable employment, good salary, remote worker. I live pretty frugally, so I love that the Great Lakes region generally costs less. I imagine my employer might scale my pay to the region, but I don't mind if it goes down somewhat.
* Somewhat solitary in my hobbies, but I enjoy socializing and love finding and building communities. I've always been able to find a good friend or two wherever I go, and I have lots of friends across the country that I stay in close contact with. I'm not too concerned about being iced out. I know people talk about that phenomenon in some areas of the country. I expect some family will eventually follow me, and I'm very close with my family, so I'll have that at some point, too.
* Weather doesn't bother me besides lack of sunlight, which I mentioned. I've survived horribly muggy summers, pretty harsh mountain winters, and some bad storms/hurricanes. Besides, weather and particularly temperature are going to be changing/unpredictable going forward.
* I love places like State College, PA, Lancaster, PA, and Bethlehem/Allentown, PA but there's just not enough wateaccess to beaches. Maybe that gives you an idea of some city moods that I like, though.
Ideas I've already gathered and will be visiting:
Sheboygan, WI: Seems great. On the smaller end but that's fine. My only concern is that it's very far from family--maybe too far for comfort.
Green Bay, WI: My thoughts are the same as for Sheboygan, but obviously Green Bay is bigger.
Akron, OH: Seems very nice. Possibly the perfect size for me. The main downside from what I see is that I'd likely end up commuting to Cleveland for most of what I want (water, arts, etc.), so maybe I should just live in Cleveland at that point?
Cleveland: A bit bigger but not overly so. Seems to have a lot of what I like, but I know the city has a bad reputation (at least we're not Detroit!), but I'm not sure if that bad reputation is necessarily warranted (for Cleveland or Detroit).
Pittsburgh: I'm vaguely considering Pittsburgh, but I don't know if the rivers would be enough for me. I like the city a lot though.
What recommendations do you have that aren't on my list? Also, are my criteria crazy? Let me know so I can adjust my expectations/search.
Thanks!
edit: added part about younger population

2024.05.21 16:53 domi_zip Trip to Riga

Hi all, I plan a trip to Riga next month and have some questions to you, as I have never been in Latvia 😊
  1. Do you often use card payments or better to have cash? In Poland in quite every place it's possible to pay with card, so it's the most comfortable option for us, but we would like to be prepared for every situation.
  2. Do you recommend any places in Riga with cheap food with vegetarian options (or at least fish)? Or just not that expensive 😃 How much does the food usually cost in Riga? Is there something what would be worth to try anyway?
  3. I read somewhere that 24.06 is a public holiday for you, is it true? How do the places work this day? Are restaurants etc. open? How do you usually spend this day?
Thanks for all the answers 💕😊

2024.05.21 16:47 Born_Pomegranate1937 How to identify client needs?

Understanding and meeting client needs is key to any successful business and client relationship. Here’s a more detailed look at five effective tactics to help you identify client needs and meet their expectations:
  1. Know Their Business: Take time to dive deep into your client’s industry, products, and competitors. It’s all about tailoring your approach to their unique situation. For instance, if you’re working with a tech startup, get to know the latest industry trends and specific challenges they face. This shows that you’re committed to their success and that you speak their language.
  2. Listen Actively: When you're in a meeting or on a call with a client, make it a point to really listen. Don’t just wait for your turn to speak. Active listening involves understanding their concerns and needs without jumping in with your response. It helps to take notes and ask clarifying questions. This way, you’ll make them feel heard and valued, and you’ll gather the details you need to deliver exactly what they’re looking for.
  3. Ask Questions and Paraphrase: Use open-ended questions to draw out more information about their needs and expectations. After they answer, paraphrase their points back to them to ensure you’ve got it right. For example, you could say, “It sounds like you’re looking for a solution that can cut your operational costs by 15%, is that correct?” This technique not only shows that you’re paying attention but also helps avoid misunderstandings.
  4. Bring New Ideas: Don’t just wait for the client to tell you what they need—be proactive in offering innovative solutions. If you can see a potential improvement or a new strategy that could benefit them, bring it up. For instance, if they’re struggling with customer engagement, you might suggest a fresh social media strategy or a loyalty program. Clients appreciate when you go above and beyond, showing your expertise and commitment to their success.
  5. Regular Check-ins: Keep the lines of communication open by scheduling regular check-ins. These can be weekly or monthly meetings, or even just periodic updates. It helps to stay aligned with their goals and address any issues as they come up. Regular contact builds a stronger relationship and ensures you’re always on the same page. For example, sending a monthly progress report can highlight what’s going well and what might need adjustment.
These tactics have really helped me in my work and I’m sure they can help you too. What strategies have worked for you?

2024.05.21 16:43 ThrowRA-tiny-home Residential Park Home, Holiday Park Home, or American-style RV?

[England, if it matters!]
I'm torn. Long story but I need to find a cheap place to live on my own at 51, but I also work from home, so it needs to be comfortable. Ideally a place I can have a small dog for company, too, and have a decent kitchen as I love to cook. Flats are crazy expensive and you usually can't have pets.
So I was looking at a park home in a residential park - I'm fairly adept at DIY and I found one for £69k that's basically 3m x 10m, structurally in good condition but very dated/retired person decor; decent bit of lawn for a park home, hidden away at the edge, close to walks, friends, family etc... I could completely refurb it (nice French doors, high quality wooden flooring, upscale kitchen, nice shower...) and redo the garden, and have a small but high-spec place with room for a dog, work, cook and entertain. But 10% to the park owner on re-sale is off-putting, especially if I'm only there for a few years before leveling up.
Park home in a holiday park that allows 11 months, and just travel for the void month? They tend to be a lot cheaper (under £50k for a 2 bed), be furnished, and have nice facilities like woods, a pool, restaurant....what's the downside? Holidaymakers? Less personal?
But I was also wondering about seeing the UK. No longer tethered to one spot, I was looking at American style RVs, the kind that are nearly the size of a bus, with sliding sections that expand outwards to extend the width when parked up. Some look pretty good - decent kitchen, separate cubicle shower & loo, sofas, a dining area; the driver and passenger seats turn around and become La-Z-Boy style armchairs.... Price for second hand seems to be between the cheapest park homes and holiday park homes. One issue is where to park it - camp grounds will be stupidly expensive, and I don't really have people whose drive I can use. Wild parking on lay-bys on A roads sounds sketchy. Also presumably depreciation and running costs are bad, but the upside is mobility.
Are all 3 options mad and I should just rent a sensible little studio in a block with no pets? This feels like a time I could decide not to be sensible and pick something fun.

2024.05.21 15:59 More_Tennis_8609 The criticisms about this season are not unique to this season

I’ve seen so many posts about this season complaining about how we don’t know the contestants, and there’s no drama, etc. and I agree, but it’s not unique to this season. There hasn’t been drama/tension/villain edit in at least 5-10 seasons..so that’s not something that’s fair to criticize about this season particularly. They also haven’t filmed at the house as much in the last 5-10 years, showing dialogue and arguments and tension at the house..it’s mainly centered around the cooking, and it’s been that way for several seasons.
Think about it..this all kind of happened in line with social media being a bigger deal. Imagine if someone who has a career as a chef acted up on a season this day in age: everyone would raise their pitchforks and leave bad comments on their social media accounts, and potentially smear the reviews of the restaurant that chef works for, which would potentially cost them their career. I genuinely don’t think the old top chef could ever come back, because attracting talented chefs and having a bunch of drama can’t happen in today’s society. The only shows that can get away with that much drama are shows where the contestants don’t have much to lose, and want to have a career as an influencer, or a career completely unrelated to the show’s focus.

2024.05.21 15:30 idahhan 1 Week in Peru (May 2024)

1 Week in Peru (May 2024)
Trip Report in May: Lima, Cusco, Pisac, Machu Picchu
  • We went on May 12th 2024.
  • We don't speak Spanish but learned basic words to come by.
  • I suggest you get some Sol currency from your home country before arriving. We took 400 Sol with us.
  • I saw some posts suggesting BCP ATM to get cash, I would recommend against it. We used Cajero Banco de la Nacion ATM and we were not charged extra fees (although limit is 400 Sol).
  • You can use credit card in most restaurants in Lima, Cusco, Pisac an Machu Picchu.
Lima:
  • We bought SIM card in Lima airport from Peru SIM before leaving the free zone. Only passport required. 80 Sol for 5Gb/1week. I suggest you get more than 5G if you are going to browse the internet during your trip.
How to recharge Peru SIM:
  1. Install Mi Cuy App
  2. Choose "Peru SIM" from multiple choice question in the beginning.
  3. Use phone number to login and your passport number as password.
  4. Personally, none of my cards worked to recharge the SIM, I tried both Visa & Master Card).
  5. There is an option to recharge but texting a WhatsApp number were they send someone to you to recharge it but I didn't explore that option.
  • Stayed: 1.5 days (2 days ideal).
  • We used Uber in Lima with no issues.
  • We stayed in Miraflores, I would have stayed in Barranco but there were more options in Miraflores.
  • Explored: Miraflores, Barranco, Centro Histórico.
  • Before booking a restaurant check their opening hours. A lot of restaurants allow reservations half an before closing which can be frustrating.
  • Tips: Book restaurants in advance, locals dine around noon. Tried: Isolina (100 Sol/person, good vibe, food okay) and Al Toke Pez (30 Sol/person, not worth >30 min wait). Other recommended spots: Jose Antonio, Cerveceria Del Valle Sagrado, Don Fernando Restaurant, La Petite France, Central, La Mar, Maido, Osaka.
  • Bars: La Noche De Barranco, Juanito De Barranco.
  • Walk/Visit:
    • Miraflores: If the sky is clear, go to Parque Del Amor and walk on Mal. Cisneros.
    • Barranco: Walk on Av. Almte. Miguel towards Parroquia La Santisima Cruz, Bajada De Baños, Bridge of Sighs, C. La Ermita, Biblioteca Municipal, Museo Pedro De Osma.
    • Centro: St. Martin Square, Jiron de la Union, Lima Main Square, Basilica & Convent of San Francisco, Mercado Central & Chinatown, Larco Museum.
Cusco:
  • Stayed: 3 days (2 days for altitude acclimation).
  • We used Uber in Lima with no issues.
  • Some recommend you go directly from Cusco airport to Ollantaytambo (2 hours drive) to acclimate better to altitude, we didn't do that.
  • Regardless how many days you are planning to stay, if you are visiting museums in cusco or planning to visit Archaeological sites. Consider buying "Tourist tickets" in cash at some sites entrances or in Cusco from "Boleto Turístico Cusco" Av. El Sol 103, Cusco 08002 ,Peru), I added table below but for more or updated details check here
  • YOU CAN NOT get Tourist tickets from "COSITUC CENTRAL OFFICE" outside the Centro area. It's just management office.
CUSCO TOURIST TICKETS AS OF MAY 2024
  • To acclimate to the elevation, consider the following tips: drink coca tea, avoid alcohol, eat light meals, and rest for the first two days.
  • I took half a 25mg "Acetazolamide" pill from a pharmacy in Lima twice a day without consulting a doctor, but you should consult a doctor before doing so. Stay hydrated, and expect more frequent visits to the washroom due to the medication.
  • Stayed: Airbnb near San Blas Market (east part quieter).
  • Walk/Visit:
    • Explore San Blas Market square, walk east until the end of C. Carmen Alto, then walk up and take a right on C. Tandapata, then up on C. Pasñapakana to reach San Blas Viewpoint (great at sunset). LIMBUS RestoBar looks cool.
    • Explore the city center: Plaza Mayor de Cusco, Museo de Arte Religioso, Museo de Sitio Qorikancha, Plazoleta Espinar, Plaza Regocijo, San Pedro Market.
  • Best prices for souvenirs I found are on C. Hatunrumiyoc & open market in Plaza Regocijo.
  • Shopping: None of the shops have unique merchandise. Compare prices at multiple places, especially shops outside busy zones and away from the Marriott.
  • I doubt that any pure Alpaca wool is sold in these shops, so price items based on their quality and softness unless you are certain it's pure Alpaca.
For food spots, I recommend:
  • Pachapapa for dinner (better call and reserve if you're arriving after 7 PM).
  • Sepia Cusco for a nice lunch (they have a great courtyard).
  • Qura for breakfast or lunch.
  • I heard Pizza is very good in Cusco, so you should try it.
  • I liked Alpaca meat more than Cuy.
Pisac trip:
  • To enter Pisac Archaeological site you need to buy a Tourist ticket circuit 3 which cost 70 Sol/Person. You can buy it in cash at the site entrance or in Cusco from "Boleto Turístico Cusco" at Av. El Sol 103, Cusco 08002 ,Peru more details here here
  • We only visited Pisac from towns around Cusco to hike down from the Archaeological site, which takes about 2 hours. Our trip was short, and we wanted to focus on this hike.
  • If I had another day, I would have also done the Rainbow Mountain hike. For Rainbow Mountain, consider staying in Tinki the night before to start the hike early, as it gets cloudy later. Tinki is 2.5 hours from Cusco.
  • Most agencies offer group trips for around $50 USD/person and private trips for $120/person. We didn't want to visit multiple towns, so we hired an Uber driver (outside Uber) with a good car for 200 Sol for the whole trip (Cusco-Pisac and back), which was cheaper than any agency. We left at 7:30 am and returned by 2 pm. We took food and water to avoid stops on the way to Pisac except for view points of the sacred valley.
  • A cheaper alternative is taking a public colectivo from 28 Puputi St in Cusco to Pisac, then a taxi from Pisac town to the top of the Archaeological site (25 Sol one way). Some posts said taking Collective can be dangerous so avoid this if you are not an experienced traveler.
  • The hike itself is great. Although the car takes you to the top, you still need to climb for about 15 minutes before heading down. The altitude can be challenging, so take your time.
Machu Picchu
Booking Machu Picchu site tickets
  • Which ticket to buy for Machu Picchu? If you just want to visit the site choose " Circuit 1,2 + Inca bridge" or "Circuit 1,2".
  • Circuit 1 is half circuit 2. Take circuit 2 unless you physically can't take around 50 stairs.
  • You have to provide passport number when you book the ticket. They will check your passport when you arrive at the site.
  • We bought Circuit 1,2 + Inca bridge ticket two months before the trip. You can try to book it directly from the government website Gov website but we couldn't find available tickets "Cerrado" there so we bought it from the Joinn us site which worked the same for the same price
  • Don't believe posts that say Joinn Us is a scam. They say that because they have not received the tickets in the email. This is because tickets are not sent to you by email. It would be available on the site on side menu under "tickets" or "Mis entradas". You can download the tickets from Joinnus site.
  • If you are not able to buy Machu Picchu tickets online, you have to be in Agaus Calientes the morning before your visit to buy the tickets.
  • You don't need to print your tickets.
Booking a ride to Machu Picchu:
To arrive to Machu Picchu from Cusco you need to:
  1. Take a bus from Cusco to the train station as no trains leave from Cusco center (Except one, see below).
  2. Take train a to Aguas Calientes.
  3. Take a Bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu site OR hike up dusty mountain road for 2 hours swarmed by buses with no much room.
Steps 1 & 2 are included in train tickets from Peru Rail or Inca Rail. A few things to note:
  • The main difference between Inca Rail and Peru Rail is step 1. Inca Rail provides a bus ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo (2 hours + traffic), then a train to Aguas Calientes (1h 40min). They ensure you reach Aguas Calientes, so no need to worry about connections.
IncaRail
  • Peru Rail offers a bus ride from Cusco to Poroy station (30 min) and then a train to Machu Picchu or from San Pedro (5 min) in Cusco center.
PeruRail
  • We chose Inca Rail's "The Voyager Bimodal - light" option, which includes a bus ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo and then a train to Aguas Calientes in the lowest-cost cabin. The 2-hour bus ride was pleasant, and the cabin quality was good. Paying extra for the 1h 40min train ride isn’t necessary. If I had known about Peru Rail's San Pedro departure, I would have chosen that.
  • Arrive at the station half an hour before boarding. Our Inca Rail bus left early to beat traffic as everyone was present.
For Step 3: Bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu
  • Only one bus service runs frequently, about every 5 minutes.
  • Tickets can be bought in person, where you'll need to stand in line, or online at Consettur.
  • We bought tickets online to avoid lines, which weren't bad during our visit on May 16th.
  • The round trip costs $24. I don’t recommend hiking up the mountain.
Note: According to EyeWitness: Peru travel book, there’s a cheaper way to get to Machu Picchu if you're on a strict budget. You can take a bus from Cusco to the Hydroelectric station and walk for 3 hours beside the railway tracks to Machu Picchu.
What time is best to visit Machu Picchu
  • If you are doing circuit 2 (which you should as it's the longest hike in Machu Picchu) Temple of the Sun is only open between 1PM-4PM. Temple of the Condor 10am-1PM, Pyramid del Intiwatana 7am -10am.
  • We didn't have a preference, but because we left Cusco at 8:30 am, we arrived Machu Picchu at 1PM. We took the 2PM time slot as we wanted to leave the next morning. No regrets.
  • We didn't hire a guide (you don't need to hire a guide regardless of what other posts say). There are three things you need to know: 1) Follow signs for Circuito 2. 2) Make sure you don’t take the “platforma inferior” turning that happens 250m into the walk. Take "Platforma Superior". 3) If you bought the Inca Bridge ticket, know where to turn to see it. I found this travel blog helpful blog.
  • I used google to read about the different sites.
Aguas Calientes
  • We stayed at Gringo Bill's Hotel. It was decent, but I’d avoid hotels on the main streets due to noise. I didn’t like Aguas Calientes much (we stayed one night). If I had more time, I would have planned a same-day return trip to Ollantaytambo.
  • Some posts mention the hot springs in Aguas Calientes, "Baños Termales (Machu Picchu)." It's more like a public bath and not really worth it, but the hike there is nice.
  • Be cautious with food in Aguas. Many highly-rated restaurants are actually bad. I met a cook who worked there and got the inside scoop. Stick to safe food—avoid raw food and fish, and ask for well-cooked meat, especially burgers. Check the lowest and most recent reviews on Google.
  • We ate at Ponchos, and it tasted good without making us sick. However, we had pizza at Pueblo Viejo, and I’ve had better frozen pizza.
After Aguas Calientes, we took the train and bus back to Cusco, then flew to Lima the same day. Flights from Cusco to Lima are often delayed, so check your flight history if you're on a tight schedule. We left for Lima Airport on a Sunday morning, and the roads leading to the highway were blocked, taking an extra hour to reach the airport.
Overall, it was an amazing trip. Next time, I would stay for two weeks and follow the EyeWitness: Peru travel book's two-week itinerary. I would also definitely do the Salkantay hike.

2024.05.21 15:03 Samjollo Private vs public sector?

I’m in a small town that happens to be the capital, so there’s ample state jobs in my area. I’m currently at a private tech startup that’s lucrative but busy and it’s not performing well, and it is tough to get any traction in the tech/remote spaces despite having 7 years as an ID and 4 as a director of training for a large decentralized staff.
My options are to sit out the current gig and enjoy the lucrative pay, jump ship to be a junior project manager at a small remote tech company, or possibly take a state job as an ID which would be a 20% pay cut, no longer remote, but saves massively in healthcare, counts toward student loan repayment (I have 5 years to PSLF so the remainder will be done in 5 years), and a pension.
In the private sector I’ve trained a lot of end users but we don’t do anything fancy. Little upgrades to the LMS, no quizzes, just checking where a user clicks into our SAAS platform to inform webinars. I assume the state job would be helping employees onboard and get professional development opportunities, but there’s little room for growth outside of the cost of living raises every year. But it is stable and less stressful, and with varied cuts to L&D stable seems valuable right now.
Thoughts? Anyone make the switch from private to public sector or vice versa?

AITA for not giving my adopted daughter a stuffed animal for her high school graduation, when both of my biological children got one?

I [49f] have 3 children, [22f], [19m], and [18f]. My oldest are my biological children from a previous marriage, and my youngest I became a mother to at the age of 2 when I married her widowed father. She has only ever called me mom, and I officially adopted her at the age of 12.
Now on to the issue with the stuffed animals: years and years ago, when I was only 20 and in college, I worked at a children's museum. I adored the job and working with kids, and had the idea to buy stuffed animals from the gift shop to be my future-kids' first stuffed animals whenever they were born. I had gotten a stuffed bear at birth that was very special to me growing up, and on my 18th birthday my parents gifted me a duplicate they had bought way back when and kept for me all these years. I found this so special, and wanted to do something similar, so I bought 6 stuffed animals from the museum's gift shop; 3 to be given at birth, and 3 duplicates. I had no idea at the time how many kids I would have, but I knew I wasn't planning on having more than 3, so I didn't get any more.
My first daughter received the stuffed animal I selected for her while pregnant. Then, between her birth and the birth of my son, I miscarried. The experience was deeply traumatic for me, especially as I miscarried in my second trimester, and I buried my baby with the stuffed animal they would have gotten. I kept the duplicate to for comfort, to cuddle and hold.
Finally, my son was born and received the last of the stuffed animals I had set aside so many years ago. Now, here's where I may be the asshole. For both my daughter and son's high school graduations, I surprised them with the duplicates, for them to take to college with them and compare against the stuffies they've been loving on their whole lives. Both were very moved by this, and took both (original and duplicate) to school with them.
My youngest, however, never received a stuffed animal, and so when her graduation celebration rolled along I had no duplicate to gift her. I watched her unpack all her gifts, and her face fall when she got to the last one and realized. She didn't really say anything, just got this super sad look on her face, and excused herself to her room. I followed to ask what was wrong, but she said she didn't want to talk to me, so her father went in instead.
According to him she cried to him that she didn't feel as loved by me as her siblings, and as much a part of the family - the unwrapping of her siblings' stuffed animals were very emotional events, and she had had the expectation she'd be getting the same. In hindsight I could have easily done something similar for her whenever I first came into her life, even if it wouldn't have been from the museum, but I just didn't think of it. She has been cold to me this entire last week, and I feel so terrible, I've offered to take her out to a special dinner the two of us to make amends but she turned me down. AITA?
Edit: the votes are in, and I am definitively TA. Many of you are suggesting that I get her a stuffie that reminds me of her, or maybe to get her two so she can continue the tradition with her future kids. But I think what I will do is gift her the duplicate my parents gifted me of my special plush bear I received at birth, which is one of my most treasured possessions, and deeply meaningful to me. Thank you all for the advice, it is genuinely appreciated.

YTA. Nothing quite says “you’re not like my other kids” like leaving her out of a family tradition when her turn came. I’m sorry about the loss of your baby and understand why you kept that stuffed animal for your own, however, the tradition could have started with her when she joined your family at age 2, or when you formally adopted her.

SmartassMouth89
YTA your kids grew up together and for years you never once thought to go and buy two stuffed animals for your adoptive daughter?

QueenKeisha
Right? In 16 years, and after giving 2 other bears away, she didn’t once think, hey what about youngest?

SmartassMouth89
Right? She liked the daughters dad enough to marry him but didn’t think that it would be a good idea to give the two year old a stuffie at the wedding?

Update - 6 days later

Long story short: my daughter found my reddit post, and came to me in tears apologizing for her reaction. This was NOT my expectation, and I assured her she had nothing to apologize for, as I had been in the wrong. We had a long discussion about the situation, our feelings, and how to move forward from this, and although I know she is still hurt we are on our way to making amends.
Long story long: so what even happened? As I've now discovered, my daughter loves browsing AITA. She stumbled on my post, and after reading it in it's entirety, as well as a good chunk of the comments (all of mine, and many left by other redditors) she came to me in tears apologizing for her reaction.
She sobbed in my arms that she didn't want this to be the end of our relationship, and that she was sorry, and wanted to enjoy this last summer together. I held her and assured her she had nothing to apologize for, and apologized myself (I did shed a little tear, but tried to keep my emotions in check as I did not want the burden of comforting me to be on her).
What followed was a productive but incredibly emotionally vulnerable conversation, the details of which I will not disclose entirely. She has been going through a rough time, and my impression (I could be wrong) is that the lack of a stuffie at graduation was a catalyst for bigger emotions. She did take me up on my offer to take her to dinner, and I've now booked a reservation at a nice restaurant she has been wanting to go to for a while.
And last night we cooked her favorite dinner together, which gave us an opportunity to smooth things over somewhat. We have not yet broached the subject of me intending to gift her my own plush, except for very briefly (she insisted I didn't have to, and seemed to feel a lot of guilt), but I still plan to. I just feel it would be best to wait until things have cooled down.
And if she truly doesn't feel comfortable taking it, I plan on getting a bear of a similar look to be its "little brother" for her to take care of. That's the update, obviously things have not magically mended overnight, but we are finally on-track to a resolution. Many thanks to all that left advice, and please check the comments below for clarification on many questions asked before passing any judgements (I far exceeded the allowed word limit, and have instead pasted much of what I intended to say here below).

Read your first post and this one, and I feel it from both sides. My wife and I recently adopted a bio niece (13 yo this week) and she welcomes us as dad and mom, but we've run into a number of times where the kids will pull out something from a trip we went on, or an activity we did, etc years before she was ever in our lives, and she'll go "why don't you have one of those for me"? It's really hard, some of these things are simply impossible for us to get, and/or would cost us thousands of dollars (when We already spent 30+k on custody/adoption lawyers and court fees).
She also didn't even bring anything with her when we picked her up, she wasn't even allowed to bring a change of underwear. It's been something that we've had to deal with in counselling that her life with us didn't start till she was almost 12, and we have to begin fresh from there, we cannot turn back the clock and give her back an entire childhood she missed. Like when we went camping for the first time with her, and we were getting things out to visually see what we needed to get from the store and we pulled out the kid's sleeping bags, and she was like "where is mine", and the fact that we didn't already have one hurt her.

Glum_Hamster_1076
And that doesn’t make you an ahole. I hope no one will call you one. Situations change and you’re not always able to “make up for it”. OP didn’t do this to hurt her daughter and it’s weird people are painting it that way. I hope things are going well with you all in therapy and your family is making great strides together.

Comment from OOP

When I initially posted to AITA, I was prepared to face judgment, and open to constructive criticism. However, while I did receive many constructive comments, which I truly appreciate, I received many more that were hateful and unconstructive, and I will admit, I did get defensive. But the attitude I took on in the comments is not one I brought into my interactions with my daughter; please understand that I did not throw in her face all the kind things I feel I've done for her over the years, but was rather attempting to contextualize our relationship for strangers who've never met us.
And before passing any further judgment in the comments, please check below for answers to a lot of the questions asked in the original thread. To answer a few questions: why did I not adopt her until 10 years after I came into her life? Because I never sought to force myself on her as her mother, and waited until she could give me explicit consent to adopt her. Why did I never buy her any stuffed animals? I did. I bought her many when I first met her, as well as one for her official adoption day, and every adoption day celebration since.
And I did technically gift her a stuffed animal for her graduation, too, it was just a plush of her college's mascot rather than a duplicate of a treasured plush from her childhood. So why did I not buy her a duplicate at any point over the last 16 years? I did not think to until my oldest graduated and received hers, by which point I (mistakenly) felt the significance would be lost. Both my bio kids received stuffies saved for them for decades, whereas she would have received one saved for only four years. Instead I tried to honor her in other ways, such as (as I described in the comments) crafting her a cookbook of generational family recipes that I illustrated by hand, because she is her own individual.
Truthfully, while I understand the sentiments expressed in the comments, I don't believe recognizing differences is inherently a bad thing. The duplicate stuffies my bio kids received were duplicates of the very first stuffies to ever be in their crib with them. Their receival of them was a birth event, and I did not give birth to my youngest. But that does not mean I love her any less, or that she is any less my daughter.
We have established our own traditions honoring her entry into my life, such as our celebration of her adoption day, and while I realize I could have handled the stuffie situation better, I do believe it was an honest mistake. But how could I not include her in a treasured family tradition, knowing how important it is (especially as an adopted child) to feel a part of the family? Because I truly did not realize this one specific tradition meant as much to her as it did.
I have strived to include her in as many family traditions as possible throughout the years. As I mentioned in the comments, she speaks German because I taught and spoke it to her growing up, even though her father does not. We celebrate German traditions, such as baking countless batches of German Christmas cookies together every year (just the two of us, neither of her siblings have any interest in baking), which is something I grew up doing with my mom, and every year it is quality time I deeply treasure.
For her 16th birthday I gifted her the locket my mother gifted me on my 16th, which she'd been gifted by my grandmother before me - this actually upset my eldest daughter, who had not received such a hand-me-down, and this is just to name a few. So given the fact that she has on occasion received and taken part in traditions my other kids have been excluded from, I did not think the stuffie would carry as much weight as it ultimately did. But isn't her reaction an indication that there are larger issues at play, and that she has likely felt this way for a while? Perhaps.
I am not a perfect adoptive mother, and have never claimed to be. And I can not see inside her brain, so I cannot know her true feelings. But my sense - and I may be wrong! - is that the larger issues at play relate back to her bio mom, which is something she expressed to me in our conversation. I did not disclose this in my original post, because I did not believe it to be relevant, and it is also a painful topic within our family, but her bio mom committed suicide whilst in the thick of post-partum depression. This has obviously impacted my daughter, who has been in and out of therapy for years grappling with feelings of loss, and guilt.
She is highly sensitive to feeling isolated within our family unit, which is something I should have taken into account in this situation, and I own that. I realize this is a huge hunk of text, but given the visceral reaction many had, I felt it was important to cover my bases. Come to whatever conclusions you all like, I will likely not be checking the comments for my own mental health, and the wellbeing of my family. To all who left genuine advice, even if that meant calling me an asshole, I truly do appreciate you. And to all who said hateful things, especially in regard to the loss of my baby, please consider the impact your words may have moving forward

You’re a good mom. It might’ve been a mistake not to gift her the plush, and it might, as you said, just have been indicative of some larger big emotions going on, as graduating is a HUGE milestone and going to college is an enormous life change that is very rewarding and exciting, but also stressful. But it sounds like you’ve been amazing about creating beautiful memories and experiences together! I think at some point, the plush will be a distant memory. From your post, it seems pretty clear you DO have a good relationship, and you’re a caring, empathetic parent. ENJOY your summer together, Mama!

sharraleigh
Don't take the hateful comments personally; it's easy to be cruel online to a faceless stranger. Also, your original post didn't include all this info (it would've been impossible to anyway), and therefore lacked a lot of the back story and nuance that frankly, a real person's life experience encompasses. Your daughter probably saw your post and realized how her reaction hurt your feelings and read the hateful comments and felt bad for you. It sounds like you have a great relationship and you're lucky to have each other in your lives!

Here are some key cloud statistics:

Moreover, organizations adopting AWS report significant advantages:

5 Common mistakes that increase cloud bill and how to avoid them

1. Unmonitored AWS Instances

Failure to monitor unused AWS instances can lead to unnecessary costs in cloud infrastructure. Neglecting to track idle, aging, or inactive AWS instances results in poor resource utilization, known as cloud sprawl. Organizations face inflated AWS bills due to uncontrolled instances from development testing or shadow IT projects.
How to tackle: To tackle this, a Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) can manually track AWS instances or use automated cloud management software, such as AWS Config or AWS Trusted Advisor, to identify and decommission unused instances regularly, optimizing resource utilization and reducing unnecessary expenses.

2. Lack of instance size management

The challenge of improper instance sizing in cloud computing disrupts budgets and performance. Over-provisioning wastes resources and costs, while under-provisioning leads to performance issues. Efficient instance size management involves analyzing workloads, automated scaling, and continuous optimization to align resources with actual needs, ensuring cost-effectiveness and optimal performance.
How to tackle: To tackle instance size management challenges, IT teams or CCoEs customize AWS instance configurations, implement scheduling using AWS Auto Scaling, monitor performance metrics with Amazon CloudWatch for continuous optimization, and leverage AWS offerings like AWS Reserved Instances for cost-effective scaling and predictable billing.

3. Failure to implement a multi-cloud strategy

Failing to implement a multi-cloud strategy means missing out on opportunities to optimize costs, performance, and resilience across various cloud platforms. It limits the ability to compare services and pricing models from different providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP. Without a multi-cloud approach, organizations may face vendor lock-in, higher costs, and reduced flexibility in adapting to changing business needs.
How to tackle: To address the challenge of not implementing a multi-cloud strategy, organizations should prioritize evaluating services and pricing from various providers. Embracing a multi-cloud approach allows for cost optimization, improved performance, and reduced dependency on a single vendor, ensuring flexibility and resilience in cloud deployments.

4. Neglecting orphaned snapshots

Neglecting orphaned snapshots, which are created when instances are terminated without properly managing associated volumes and snapshots, can lead to unnecessary charges in cloud environments. These orphaned volumes and snapshots continue to incur costs even though they are no longer actively used, contributing to wasteful spending and inflated bills. It’s crucial to regularly review and clean up orphaned resources to avoid unnecessary charges and optimize cost management in cloud infrastructures.
How to tackle: To tackle the issue of neglecting orphaned snapshots, implementing backup strategies is crucial. This includes taking snapshots before deleting volumes, which reduces costs by billing only for snapshots at lower rates rather than full volume charges. Additionally, it’s essential to monitor orphaned snapshots regularly and manage them efficiently to avoid unexpected cost surges. This proactive approach, coupled with leveraging AWS services like Amazon EBS Snapshot Lifecycle Manager, ensures optimal cost management and prevents unnecessary expenses in cloud environments.

5. Lack of automation

Not embracing automation for tracking cloud resources hinders efficiency, especially at scale. Manual methods are time-consuming, prone to errors, and often lack real-time insights. Automation streamlines resource management by automatically monitoring, provisioning, and optimizing cloud assets. It reduces human intervention, ensures accuracy, and enables quicker responses to changing workload demands, leading to improved operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness in cloud environments.
How to tackle: Tackling the issue of not embracing automation involves leveraging automated tools and workflows to streamline processes and improve efficiency in cloud operations. Automation enforces best practices, maintains consistent performance standards, and reduces the burden on operations teams by handling repetitive tasks and ensuring accuracy. This enables teams to focus on critical aspects of cloud management, such as optimizing costs, enhancing security, and supporting business innovation, with the assistance of AWS services like AWS Lambda and AWS CloudFormation.

2024.05.21 14:39 Cherbro Website idea needing suggestions

I am looking into an opportunity to create a responsive website/webapp for people to store a record of training over a certain timeframe which would be required in a certain line of work. Kind of like a digital logbook.
I would like to offer the option of a subscription of premium features which would allow bulk import from other reports and an export report. Later on I would like to add the option of videos and training material or events which can be added to your training portfolio for the premium users.
I am not really confident in where to start. I was thinking a WordPress site with a MemberPress plugin. There is some hesitancy to go completely custom with high startup costs as there are some involved parties with their own development teams that could potentially knock me out of the running by developing their own platform.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Heston Blumenthal reveals bi-polar diagnosis
What an absolute legend. I felt like I had to run and hide from myself and others when I was an employee/manager in restaurants. Instead of confiding in my bosses when I had am episode or breakdown, I would quit and start a new job - the shame was so deep.
And not without good reason. I heard what was said if a member of the workforce admitted to mh issues, and it wasn't pretty.
I love seeing progress in the world that makes it a better place for everyone. Also, as Heston says, maintaining outdated, old fashioned attitudes costs the economy millions every year.
Judging someone because they're not doing as good as you might feel good for a few seconds, but it's gross behaviour. I'd love to see us continue to be more uplifting and less discriminatory.
