Borrego Springs' WWII Scout Car
Borrego Springs' WWII Scout Car
The White Motor Car Company built the Scout Car in 1941 for the U.S. Army. A Scout Car was basically utilized by ranking officers for secure transportation in and around enemy territory and for other secure logistical purposes. This particular Scout Car, USA-WII62547, was used by General Patton's Third Army in the Anza-Borrego desert while training for the invasion of North Africa in 1943. The terrain in our desert is similar to that of the Saharan Desert where Germany's Field Marshal Rommel was in control. Training completed, the Army left our desert for the invasion, but left most all non-ar-tillery wheeled vehicles here for further training purposes.
The Scout Cars were declared surplus war materials and most were obtained by the farmers in the area to be utilized as tractors on the citrus groves, vineyards and field crop farms in the late '40s and '50s. With WWII's ending and production of new tractors was begun, the Scout Cars were replaced and most were just abandoned or sold as scrap. In 1984, this Scout Car, USA-WII6587, was found buried in the sand and was towed to the yard of the Borrego Water Company. Mr. Burnand, owner of the Water Company and the car, donated it to a group "Borrego Veterans Detachment" with the understanding that it was to be used as a living memorial to the Veterans of Borrego Springs. Now The American Legion Post 853, here in Borrego Springs has ownership of it and maintains it as a memorial. Future plans are for permanent display on Post 853 grounds. It was a mess: the engine was frozen up; the tires so hard, they had to be burned off the wheels; brakes were rusted to the drums; the engine and transmission were full of sand and just plain missing parts.
Many, many hours of work by many individuals contributed to the rebuilding of the car after obtaining original specifications form The White Motor Company and the U.S. Army. In particular, Richard Trask tore the Scout Car down to its frame, personally manufacturing new items that were rusted away, repainted and reassembled everything according to original specifications. The Scout Car is not a replica - it is the original USA-WII62547, built for and utilized by the U.S. Army and sold as surplus. Its value is unknown - but to those Veterans of the "Greatest Generation" it is invaluable.

Leaking liquid mystery?
Hi all - hoping for some help with this one. My ‘19 Tiguan SE looks like it's leaking some sort of liquid from the general area of the front passenger side. Any idea what this can be?
Picture 1: the liquid on ground by front right tire. I last drove it about two hours ago - it drove fine - and when I went back out the spot was there.
Picture 2: showing where some of the liquid is overflowing - looks to be directing below timing belt?
Picture 3: comparing the liquid and oil on paper towel.
A few notes on the mystery liquid - it does have a slight smell, but not the same as motor oil. It is slightly less viscous than motor oil. I also checked the oil levels and they were fine.

2024.05.28 02:00 CockroachDiligent241 I'm panicking because I feel like I have failed at life and don't know how to fix it

I am 33 years old, working a dead-end job, and struggling with the sense that both time and my options are running out.
As a child, I was non-verbal and diagnosed with Autism and Special Learning Disorders (namely, Auditory/Language Processing Disorder). I was delayed or below average in math, writing, reading comprehension, language, talking, motor skills, etc. Frequently, in my assessments and at school, I was described as the “r-word” since I performed poorly at everything and was very low-functioning.
Although I have overcome many of my most visible handicaps, I still struggle with daily living and “adulting.” I still can’t manage to hold a pen or pencil to sign my name; I accept whatever inconsistent, illegible gibberish I make as my “signature.” I still struggle with speech. I can read and understand a word, but making my tongue and mouth create the right sound is still a challenge, albeit I mask this well by avoiding words with too many syllables and conversation in general. I still struggle with comprehending language, conversation, and spoken words. Since I have an auditory/language processing disorder, my brain doesn’t “hear” words, tones, etc. Often, when someone is talking to me, it sounds like agarbledmessofincoherentsoundsthatallblendtogetheranddontregisterinmybrainsoImissalotofwhatissaidtome. Again, I have managed to mask this by not even trying to understand all the words said but finding keywords and rolling with them and hoping the keywords I noticed are the right ones.
As well as my neurological and developmental handicaps, I grew up in a screwed-up household with rampant physical and sexual violence.
My late teens and early adulthood derailed my life in a way I am not sure I’ll ever fully recover from. At 17, I was institutionalized in a mental hospital. At 18, my dad shot himself, and I became homeless. I was living on the street for my high school graduation. Later, I obtained a CDL and worked as a long-haul trucker for several years. As Michael Belzer titled his book, truck driving is sweatshops on wheels (read his book). The abuse and the pay are horrible. After nearly dying in an accident, I went back to school for software development at a kind of community/career college (I am not sure exactly what the US equivalent would be). Ten years later, I still haven’t found work in that field. CS seems to have gone to hell in a handbasket with mass layoffs and whatnot, and since I don’t have a “degree” and have no experience, there doesn’t seem to be much hope for me in that.
Today, I work 50 hours a week supervising and training other long-haul truckers for a medium-sized carrier while helping the office with some computer stuff (like automating payroll spreadsheets with VBA).
I've failed to achieve a "career," I've failed to buy a house, I don't have anything saved for retirement, I don't have a degree, I've failed at everything!
I want to feel like I am on the "right track," but I don't know what that track is, if it even exists, or how to find it.
I've been trying to achieve some "personal" goals.
In 2022, I published my first book on Amazon about the right of people to self-determination under international law, which won an award from an authors' organization in the US. Although I am not "educated" with a degree, I read a lot, and my book collection consists of over 2,000 hardcover and paperback nonfiction books.
In 2023, I spent a month driving around Uzbekistan, from the Fergana Valley to the Afghanistan border to the Aral Sea. In a few months, I plan to visit Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. I love travelling, and a large part of me is like, "F*** it. If I'll never retire or own a home and will die in the eventual climate wars, at least I'll see some cool places," although that's probably not the wisest decision.
Overall, though, while everyone my age has kids, buys houses, and establishes themselves in their careers, I exist as a hopelessly lost cause, aimlessly struggling through life and running out of time to catch up.
I feel like I truly am a "lost generation." Now what?! I DON'T KNOW! This scares the hell out of me. TIME IS RUNNING OUT! I NEED TO FIGURE SOMETHING OUT, BUT WHAT?! Everything seems to be going from bad to worse, and I don't know what to do.
What does someone who is a failure and a member of the "lost generation" do?!

2024.05.28 01:39 Th3_Flying_Fox Fc Help request

So I know this sub is for general like rx7 stuff, but I've been having this issue with my 88 rx7 where it seems to not be getting fuel sent into the "chambers". Pretty much its being sent through the rails and into the secondaries but not the primaries. I took off the primaries from the middle iron with the rail still attached to the injectors, no fuel was spewing from them, however I did the same with the secondaries and fuel would come out. I tested the primary injectors with two wires and a battery and I was not getting a pulse from them just occasional sparks. I tried another pair of injectors the friend had that were 450cc (the current ones are 550) and have no checked to see if fuel comes out of them since it's starting to get late. However I was hoping anyone of you lads might have any idea of what could be causing this issue. I should also note that the motor has a bridgeport and before the port it ran fine.

The blasted sun flickered through the windows of my home, taunting me. The thing new I was expecting to wake up the second its rays blessed my face this morning and chose to hide itself! I awoke with my feathers flattened unflatteringly and little time to apply my favorite feather dust! My mirror hanging in the foyer of my burrow revealed my panic was entirely misplaced.
My normally light gray feathers radiated vibrantly with orange hues coupled with red and yellow accents. The perfectly white toga wrapped around my body without a hint of stain upon it. I flicked my tail and fanned the feathers upon it. My Crest feathers spread perfectly too. I couldn’t help but smile at my own image, like a true narcissist. I just need to remember to not smile in front of our stellar neighbors! Most likely, bearing teeth will be seen as a sign of aggressiveness instead of friendliness. At least someone on my team had the foresight to consider out weirdness.
We proto-avians are a rare breed, after all. The only surviving member of our species and the only one to stand perfectly upright despite our tail. At some point, our specie diverged from the rest, as we didn’t even sport beaks! My team did come to the conclusion that while other species will likely not look too similar to us, they will, of course, have some method fine motor manipulation skills as otherwise they won’t have the ability to invent tech. They should also be obligate carnivores like ourselves. Sadly, the herbivorous lifestyle doesn’t easily lend itself to the behavior required to gain sentience. Pack tactics and cooperation are what encourage large brain growth. Something running away from threats and eating can never produce on their own.
It took me very little time to actually make it to the space elevator. Though it’s not my first time riding it, I still can’t help the knot in my stomach looking up at the tower. It just doesn’t feel right that an object orbiting the planet can be tethered to said planet. Yet, here it is. This time, I didn’t have to wait in line to go up. The entire complex had been shut down for myself.
“AH! Captain Saori! Just in time! We are about ready to launch the probe at Epsilon! Ooooo! I can’t wait to see what our galactic neighbors have been building and introduce ourselves. I get the feeling, the only reason they haven’t come to say hello is due to the fact we don’t have FTL ourselves until now. This… by the goddess, is going to be the most important day in Nivean history… I am beyond jealous that you get to be not only the first person to experience FTL, but also the first Nivean to ever go meet with actual extraterrestrials!”
I wrapped my wing-arms around Joi. My claws gently preened her brown plumage, “I wish you could come with me. It’d make for a hell of a date.”
She leapt a good [ten feet] into the air, “I! YOU! Buh! Are you seriously asking me out right now!”
I took a half step forward, “There’s a chance I don’t survive this. I don’t want to die never knowing if I had a chance with you.”
Tears welled in her eyes as we embraced once more, “Of course! By the goddess, yes!”
I felt a claw on my arm, “Sorry love uirits. I need the captain in the observatory for the launch. If you don’t mind, ma’am.”
She nuzzled me and quickly sprinted towards her news crew, who erupted into cheers. I joined General Kovan in the observatory, “Sir. How long until the ship goes into FTL?”
He stood tall and bore his light-gray feathers proudly, “[Two hours] ago. We knew the paparazzi were watching you like a Kufa, so we lied about the actual launch time.”
I gasped at the betrayal, “Why?”
He looked sorrowful as he explained, “As your team pointed out… The aliens may be hostile. If they destroy the probe, I want the broadcast to have a delay to it. So we can get to damage control as quick as possible.”
The mass hysteria that would happen if the Epsilon aliens were hostile was a valid concern, “I understand, sir.”
One of the tech’s jumped in surprise, “SIR! The probe! It’s left FTL early!”
General Kovan rushed to his side, “What?! Report!”
The tech carried on, “The FTL drive is functioning properly. The AI is reporting strange readings… Sir, I think the Epsilons posses tech that can pull ships out of FTL.”
One of the engineers spoke up, “Can confirm, sir. The ship is still capable of engaging its FTL drive if it leaves the confinement bubble. It also appears that while it will be unpleasant, it won’t be lethal to living crews.”
“Sir! We have contact!”
The screen in the center of the observatory flicked to life. A large, sleek vessel slowly grew larger and larger. We were all awed by its sheer size. It could easily take a thousand individuals to man that thing alone. General Kovan’s crest stood on end as he started to count the obvious weapons mounted over its hull. I didn’t doubt for a moment that intergalactic war was a thing, but to see the mass of this ship… intergalactic wars are on a scale unfathomable to us. Considering that our last serious military conflict in the last [twenty years] only had three actual combatants and resulted in only one person losing tail feathers, we were likely never going to hold a candle up to their combat prowess.
Kovan steadied himself, “Start the first contact procedure!”
My joy and pride for the last ten years finally activated. As many different methods of communicating started to active. Everything from radio waves to X-rays were pulsed out of the ship in a method that should hopefully allow us to establish a baseline of communicating. Our ship also began to pulse lights in an obvious pattern, as well as rotate gently before reversing that rotation. As a last ditch effort, we also included multiple different physical media in the craft in case the Epsilons were a touch-based species and were completely unaware of radiation or light.
We all sat and waited for hours. The rest of the world soon joined us in the tension as we watched on. It felt like we were going to be broken in half before the Dreadnought opened its bay doors and began maneuvering in an attempt to pick up the craft. We ordered it to comply and as it drew near the belly, we force shut it down. Something about the ship itself was interfering with our FTL communications.
It took a moment for it to dawn on us. The room erupted into loud cheers as we all jumped in joy! We had just made actual non-hostile contact with an alien species! They trusted us enough to lower their defenses and let us into one of their more sensitive ships!
Kovan nodded to me and I rushed towards the space elevator. It was time to go say hello in person.

I rushed through the halls of my home and out the front door looking like hot garbage. For the first time since humanity came on the scene, another race has developed FTL and made first contact. This time with my own people, the Deuteran. Our scientists had already made leaps in decoding the alien language as the new arrivals had saw fit to include everything and more necessary to do so on an unmanned craft.
We all felt relieved after seeing the first video of one of the proto-avians simply moving. They possessed cutting teeth and sharp claws on their wing-arms, as well as a wicked looking claw on their legs, but it was clear as day what they were actually for when the alien dug them into a tree to climb up and eat its fruits. Humanity had taught us that appearances did not dictate behavior. Looking closely at them revealed the truth. Though we should have seen that coming as they looked at objects one eye at a time like true prey- I mean like us herbivores.
A shuttle had been scrambled to carry me towards the first contact point when we detected the new arrival's home world had sent a second craft into FTL. We sped through space, diverting all traffic out of our way to ensure no delays. I arrived just in time to watch them come out of FTL in an albeit primitive, but still amazingly beautiful, sleek craft.
We quickly prepared to dock and let what will likely be the shield newest member on board. The door clicked and hissed before finally opening to reveal the sealed door of their ship. After a moment, we watched the locking mechanisms open up and pull away.
I let out a gasp. They looked like an angel. Their suit was a simple piece of stunningly white cloth wrapped around their body. Their feathers were of a magnificent orange with red and yellow hues. They held a golden, ornate box in their arms as they STALKED FORWARD. OH, GODS. THE THING HAD BEEN LOOKING AROUND LIKE WE DID WITH A SINGLE EYE, BUT WHEN IT FELT SAFE IT STARED DOWN ITS SNOUT AT ME AND IT’S HEAD LOCKED ONTO ME. IT DREW CLOSER AND CLOSER BEFORE opening the box to reveal to soft bodied fruits…
It gently picked one up and held the box up to me. I grabbed the other as it set the box down. It held the fruit straight out, and I mimicked its actions. It looped its arm around mine and held its fruit to my mouth. When I held mine up to them, they slowly opened their maw to reveal every sharp tooth in their heads as they gently leaned forward and bit into the fruit. I copied them faithfully and felt the tangy sweet flavor of the fruit wash into my mouth. With a tongue-full of amazing flavor, we fed each other a fruit.
I felt like an idiot for fearing them as they leaned forward and groomed some spilled pulp off my beak. I felt my translator burn as it finished downloading their language, and braced itself to use my own vocal cords to translate my words into theirs.
It looked startled as I spoke, “Do not be afraid. I can speak your language do to two things. The first being the drone your people sent to us and the second being our translator chips which are allowing me to speak your language. I must say, It is a pleasure to meet you and share this first meal together. May it be one of millions.”
They took a half step back and their outward beauty was only matched by their voice, “The pleasure is mine! I am Captain Saori. My people have observed the signals yours has been emitting into space for some time now. You inspired us to invent, to cooperate and yearn to meet you. If you don’t mind, I am so curious about your people.”
I let my tail feather fan out in delight, “Peoples! I am Khalink, Shield Diplomat. We are a defensive organization comprising dozens of different species all working together to keep ourselves safe.”
“Amazing… simple amazing! If I may ask, would you be so kind as to settle a debate that has been held on my home for quite some time? How many of these species are herbivores, omnivores or carnivores?”
I shuddered at the word carnivore, “Well, The majority of all aliens are herbivores like myself. With only a small section being omnivores that lean towards being true herbivores, and only one that I know of that is a true omnivore and must be one. There is also only two known instances of true carnivores.”
I wanted to avoid talking about the Arxur. Those abominations were quarantined and not something I wished to scare them with. Saori looked delighted as he placed a claw to his chest and closed his eyes, “This is… the opposite of what we thought it would be! To think my own people are only the third true carnivores to become sapient!”
Every thought in my head came to a halt, “I’m sorry? You just ate a fruit…”
They let out a lite chirp, “Oh! Yes. While we can eat fruit, we get almost no nutrition from it. It mainly helps us digest meat… Are you ok? You’re looking a little wobbly.”
I awoke in the medical bay of my ship. Sitting up I could see numerous staff standing around me with… them only a few feet away. Oh, gods… a second race of obligate carnivores, and these have developed FTL on their own…
___/\___
This! Is my second story. No multiple arcs, not huge storyline. Just a small little idea that popped into my head that I will be working on at least once a month… hopefully. I hope you enjoyed!

AI TRAINED TO DRAW INSPIRATION FROM IMAGES, NOT COPY THEM

Powerful new artificial intelligence models sometimes, quite famously, get things wrong—whether hallucinating false information or memorizing others’ work and offering it up as their own. To address the latter, researchers led by a team at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a framework to train AI models on images corrupted beyond recognition. DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are among the text-to-image diffusion generative AI models that can turn arbitrary user text into highly realistic images. All three are now facing lawsuits from artists who

WHAT GOOGLE AI MEANS FOR YOU—AND YOUR SEARCH RESULTS

Google recently unveiled plans to integrate its search engine with artificial intelligence (AI). The company is debuting a new search engine feature called A.I. Overviews, which generates an overview of the topic a user searches and displays links to learn more. Traditional search results still appear underneath, but A.I. Overviews, Google says, will parse various pieces of information to give you a quicker answer. The new feature has raised concerns from some web publishers, who worry it will deal a heavy blow to their site traffic. Currently, A.I. Overviews don’t

Called passive daytime radiative cooling, or PDRC, the technology uses engineered materials to reflect away the sun’s radiation. The idea is that, amid heat waves, PDRC panels would cool buildings without the need for energy-intensive

2024.05.28 00:33 Attic_Capital Karl Benz the master inventor

Karl Benz the master inventor
Greater economy of force.
What is it?
Thomas Edison knew exactly what it was.
Although many inventors tinkered with a gas-powered carriage before, none of them could execute. Their experiments went abandoned.
But then in 1883, Karl Benz began working quietly on his invention of a four-stroke engine powered 'horseless carriage' - alone, and in secrecy.
Gas powered carriages were such a crazy idea at that time, you were labeled a lunatic by attempting to build one.
Benz knew to stay out of the fray - until he had a prototype.
Then, even after he drove his Benz Patent-Motorwagen down a public street in Manheim, Germany in 1886, the doubts didn't stop.
It took 10 more years to repeal the "Red Flag Act," which required all self-propelled vehicles to be preceded by a person walking at least 60 yards ahead carrying a red flag.
Luckily, the great minds of the day knew the titanic shift that was underway.
In 1895, Thomas Edison was asked his thoughts on the horseless carriage.
Still a controversial subject, Edison nailed his response -
"Talking of a horseless carriage suggests to my mind that the horse is doomed... It is only a question of a short time when the carriages of every large city will be run by motors. The expense of keeping and feeding horses in a great city like New York is very heavy, and all this will be done away with. You must remember that every invention of this kind which is made adds to the general wealth by introducing a new system of greater economy of force. A great invention which facilitates commerce, enriches a country just as much as the discovery of vast hoards of gold."
Hoping for a much more cynical answer, the interviewer walked away dejected.
Karl Benz was the first to invent, then execute on the problem of a motor vehicle.
Through all the public skepticism, he introduced, in Edison's words, "a new system of greater economy of force."

2024.05.28 00:10 aimal1st A test result that MAY explain my muscle twitching, and weakness.

What is Anti VGKC?
Anti-voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) antibodies are antibodies that cause hyperexcitability in the central and peripheral nervous systems. They are also known as anti-VGKC-Ab. They are antibodies against the voltage gated potassium channels.
It's generally non specific, and in absence of caspr2 and LGI1 it needs more interpretation to be clinically relevant.
However I got a test back and it came back as a .49 mnol which is 490 pnol. From what I understand only 2-3 in a million people have a titer of over 400 pnol (.40 mnol) per year. The standard range on the test gets marked at over <.02 mnol.
High Anti VGKC It is associated:
Morvan Syndrome
Isaac Syndrome
Acquired neuromyotonia
Peripheral nerve hyperexcitability
Limbic Encephalitis
Motor Neuron Disease
Cancer
Symptoms of these disorders include:
Other symptoms:
I was relieved at first when I saw this information thinking I had an answer, but then of course I came across and article about anti-vgkc positive being associated with slow progressing als where as an absence of anti vgkc was associated with fast progressing als, they are not sure what that means other than it's more likely those with high vgkc als is more likely immune system related and slower progressing.
Granted all my symptoms started after covid I'm not surprised if I do have ALS it was probably immune triggered. But just holding out hope something else is explaining my progressive weakness and hoping it's tied to this anti-vgkc thing. Gonna try to push for IVIG therapy and see if it can help me. If you have muscle twitching and feel some weakness, I'd suggest getting tested for this.

2024.05.28 00:04 Island_In_The_Sky Are aftermarket seats with heating/cooling typically standardized and swappable?

I hate my seats and want to replace them with better, more bolstered ones, but want to maintain my heated/cooled functionality since I live in an area that gets painfully hot.
I know people swap car seats all the time, and assume the rail mounts are relatively standardized, but I’ve never done this myself… so my question is: in general, are the wiring harnesses and power supply for the motors and seat heatecooling system generally standardized/compatible, or do most manufacturers make them proprietary and/or do they design them with vastly different wiring/harnesses?
Also, generally are the mechanical systems for cooling integrated into the seat itself or is it typically linked to the HVAC system?
Any input/experience would be appreciated. Thanks.

2024.05.27 23:50 SeriousStrokes69 The Organization of Walt Disney World

I know a lot of you enjoy knowing and understanding how WDW works, and one thing that comes up every once in awhile but has never had a specific post is how the parks are organized to “work.” So I thought a quick post about the basic organization of the resort might be informative for those of you who’re interested in such things. Apologies in advance for the wall of text, but there's no other way to lay all of this out. Hopefully, you'll find it worth the read.
Anyway, starting at the top, Josh D’Amaro is the Chairman of Disney Parks and Experiences, known internally as DPEP (Pronounced D-pep). He reports directly to Bob Iger. There are 11 operating divisions within DPEP, one of which is WDW (DisneyLand, International Parks, WDI, HR, etc. are examples of others).
Jeff Vahle is the President of Walt Disney World, and reports to Josh. There are six components of WDW, each with a Senior VP: Commercial Strategy, Site Strategy & Integration, Safety & Health Engineering, WDW Facility Operations Services (known as FOS), Operations (Parks), and Operations (Resorts).
Operations (Parks) includes, of course, the four parks, each with its own VP, a division for Training, a division dedicated specifically to Animals, Science, and the Environment, a division for Industrial Engineering, a division for Experience Engineering, and a division for Ops Integration.
Each one of the parks has five divisions. Merchandising, Food & Beverage (F&B), Park Planning and Integration, Entertainment & Imaging (which includes the character actors, ambiance actors [folks like the Dapper Dans, the Jammitors and the Voices of Liberty at Epcot, etc.], and the PhotoPass folks), and Operations.
Operations includes the Custodial staff, the Attractions Staff (which, inexplicably IMO, includes the folks who work at the touch points, Entry Kiosks, and Parking and Tram Operations), and the Guest Relations staff (including those who sell tickets at the front entrance, the Guest Experience Teams around the park, etc.).
Operations also includes the park’s Duty Managers. Each park has a Duty Manager on duty at all times to oversee the totality of park operations – they are THE senior manager in charge of the entire park. They are typically the ones who make the final call on whether or not someone gets trespassed for non-security related issues, for example. Epcot’s F&B group also includes all of their Festival Operations staff.
Within each component of Park Operations, the rank structure is basically the CMs, supervised by Coordinators (many LOBs call their coordinators by other names, such as Captains, Foremen, etc.). These are senior personnel who oversee line operations but have no say in discipline, promotions, etc. Coordinators are supervised by Leaders (who are typically the ones entrusted to make the final call on any issue that comes up within their sphere of influence), who are supervised by Proprietors, who are supervised by GMs or Directors, who report to the VPs.
Attractions, F&B, and Merchandising are all organized within each park by areas or lands. So, for example, Merchandising for Adventureland at MK is one unit, as is Merchandising for Tomorrowland, etc. The same is generally true for F&B and Attractions. Oftentimes, a CM who works in one “land” is cross-trained to work at any of the stores/attractions within that land. And some positions are often "global," in that, once you're trained to work the job, you can pick up shifts literally anywhere on property, with limitations. So, for example, if you're in custodial at MK, you can pick up extra shifts at any of the other parks. But you can't pick up at a Resort because their custodial CMs are trained differently.
If you want to get an idea of how an Attraction works internally, watch this video (<- May not be Safe for Magic for some) from a DCP participant who describes the roles in a rotation at the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, along with what CMs do for PAC (Parade Audience Control) and during the fireworks shows each evening at MK.
Operations (Resorts) includes a VP for the hotels, of course. It is organized into three regions, each with a regional manager. Resort Ops also includes global divisions for F&B, Retail Operations, Recreation Services, etc. Each Resort Region includes GMs for each resort, plus a regional Duty Officer, who has basically the same role as the park’s Duty Managers described above.
Ops-Resorts also includes individual divisions (each with its own VP) for Disney Springs; the Water Parks; ESPNWWOS and Mini Golf operations; Resorts Entertainment; Premium Services (Golden Oaks, Club 33, VIP Tours, etc.); and Transportation Operations. Transportation Ops includes all of the buses, the monorails, all of the watercraft, the Skyliner, Minnie Vans, and, when it was operating, a liaison to the Disney Magical Express team at Mears. The ESPNWWOS group manages not only all of the ESPN complex and the competitions that take place there, but they also handle all of the runDisney Marathons, the cheerleading and dance team competitions, and related events.
WDW Facility Operations and Services includes all of the engineering, construction, maintenance, asset management, fleet management, building management, etc. folks, plus a division that includes internal manufacturing, distribution services (warehousing & supply), Horticulture and Holiday Services, Costuming, Textile Services (the huge laundries, basically), and Pest Management (they deal with everything from mosquitoes to snakes to alligators). These folks handle the maintenance for everything, including the attractions. Each park & the resorts (collectively) have maintenance personnel field deployed to support local operations. They also handle the maintenance for the transportation division’s assets, including the huge (rectangular) roundhouse that houses the monorail trains, the steam engines and cars of the MK trains, etc., and takes care of WDW’s 300+ vehicle bus fleet and the other 2500 motor vehicles WDW operates.
There are a couple of exceptions to the structure described above. Security does not work for Jeff Vahle or Josh D’Amaro (though they obviously work hand-in-hand with the parks and resorts staff to do their job). They are part of a Global Security group housed under the Chief Security Officer based in Anaheim. WDW has its own VP of Security, who oversees all security operations on the WDW property. There are four main divisions. Security Operations (the blues you see at the screening stations and throughout the parks), the Investigations staff, a Labor and Scheduling staff, and a division for Resorts and Special Units. Special units includes the park’s 24/7 Communications Center, Emergency Management, K-9 unit, Background Investigations, Access Control, etc.
DPEP’s Chief Creative Officer, also a separate division from the parks, owns the Live Entertainment groups and the groups that design things like the revamp of Epcot (they co-design attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy with the engineers and designers at WDI, which is also a separate group), the fireworks groups and the groups that design shows like Happily Ever After and Luminous: The Symphony of Us. Entertainment is kind of complex because the live performances you see on stages around the parks and in parades are people who belong to this group, while the face/fur characters you see out and about at the M&Gs and whatnot belong to the Entertainment unit at each park.
There are a handful of other organizational elements that belong to other divisions other than Jeff Vahle’s group. This includes the DVC sales people you see at the kiosks around the property, HR, Communications & Public Affairs, etc. There's a group known as Advisory and Assurance (known internally as A&A), who work under the company’s Controller. These folks are part of the auditing staff and are the ones who oversee the use of benefits by CMs and passholders. They investigate things like CM’s selling or misusing guest passes, people abusing their passholder privileges, and so forth. They’re the ones who’ve been busting the illegal tour operators the past few months.
WDW now has just over 80,000 employees working on site (which includes several hundred employees of other TWDC divisions, such as DCL), and it is an insanely massive operation both on stage and behind the scenes to make the parks and resorts work on a daily basis. WDW remains the world’s largest single site employer.
Anyway, hopefully, this gives you an idea of how the entire system is organized, for those who’re into understanding those kinds of things. If anyone has any questions about park organization, then feel free to ask.

2024.05.27 23:37 milkypete82 6S1P battery pack voltage question

Hi all. I'm reasonably familiar with 18650 cells, BMS & li-ion. I have a robotic lawnmower which is 2.5 years old. It's recently been struggling to cut longer grass so I assume the battery pack is due for replacement. I measured the voltage on the charged pack today and I was surprised to see it was at 24.4v, average of 4.06v/cell. I didn't open the pack up. A replacement battery pack isn't cheap, I've looked at making my own but I don't have a spot welder, by the time I buy one of those I may as well just buy the OEM pack.
My question is, can 1 cell degrade with the other 5 being fine? I'm quite sure this may be the cause. I don't believe BMS generally have a balancer - I assume it's a basic BMS in the pack. If I open up the wrap from the pack and measure each cell would I be able to measure each cell individually or would it give me the total series voltage?
Finally, assuming there is 1 bad cell could this cause a lack of power even though it's over the 22v nominal power it should supply?
I want to check it's the battery pack and not the motor which needs replacing so I'm hoping to find a fault with the pack. I suppose I should just open it up and test it but thought I'd ask the knowledgeable people here first!

2024.05.27 22:57 FlipperBizkut So Many Questions

I have a bunch of questions and hope that I'm not out of line asking here instead of doing actual research. That said, some of my questions are more subjective rather than objective, so I was looking for opinions.
First, my use case: I commute 15.5 miles each way to work 3 days/week. The vast majority of this distance is interstate at >70mph. On any given day, I might go to the grocery store which is 5 miles from home. On the weekends, I commute 55 miles each way to work both Saturday and Sunday. That trip, too, is almost 100% interstate at >70mph. I have a house with a garage. My electrical panel has space for several more breakers (question about that later). I live in the South where it gets very hot and humid, but the winters can get cold too. We have an ICE car for any long trips that we would need to make.
  1. Based on my use case, is the EV6 a good choice for me?
  2. Even though my panel has plenty of open spots for additional breakers, how do I know whether or not my service can handle the additional load?
  3. What are the implications of all the ICCU issues and other general charging issues (48amp vs 40amp, recommendation to not charge over 32amp, heat causing charging speeds to plummet, etc.)?
  4. What charger would be recommended for my use case? I really don't care about much other than being able to stop charging at 80% (or whatever), not overheating and burning my house down, and otherwise being reliable. Also, what does it typically cost to have a charger installed?
  5. I always upgrade the stereos in my cars. Would adding an amplifier or two, and running them straight off the 12v mess with the ICCU, 12v charging, void my warranty, or anything else?
  6. With respect to the AWD, it seems like when accelerating, the majority of the power is from the RWD motor. What is the benefit of AWD besides another motor for regenerative braking?
  7. It seems like for my use case, I could get by with the range of a GT. There are none near me to test drive. Is the GT a game changer compared to the GT-Line? I come from always having 4 cylinder cars, so I'm not used to much performance anyway (but they've always been light cars).
  8. The "picture" of the EV8 that is supposed to be coming out in 2026 is amazing. That is much more my style. What do you think the price point of that vehicle will be that would compare to the EV6 GT-Line?
  9. We buy new cars and drive them until the wheels fall off. Depreciation is still scary. Especially when it comes to getting in a wreck. What happens if the vehicle (lets say 18 months old) gets totaled? Are you just screwed? Can you only protect yourself from that with gap insurance?
  10. Local dealer is advertising a 2024 GT-Line for $47,499 ($59,275 MSRP - $7,500 National Rebate - $1,500 VIN Bonus Cash). Is that a good deal? Are there any other discounts I should be looking for?
  11. What am I forgetting to ask that I should be?
I really appreciate your time. This would be the most expensive car I've ever purchased by a considerable amount. Not to mention the unknown EV vs the known ICE. I just don't want to mess up.

I have a 1984 f250 3/4 Ton with 100,000 original miles. I'm planning on taking the whole the motor apart as I want put in an ecu, better glow plugs, and make it a reliable towing/ work vehicle. I'm looking for build ideas and really any tips with this truck! I've never built a motor or done any type of retro fitting. Honestly don't have a crazy amount of experience with mechanics in general.
Please let me know how you think I should go about it!

2024.05.27 19:11 MissSaigon1998 TAKEOVER in Houston ISD - The Purge of dozens of Quality Educators, Corruption, Scandals, Mike Miles TEA Agenda for Profit over Students, and how this week they just fired my Child's SLL / SpEd teacher who had a Masters' degree & almost 30 years of experience in HISD Special Education classrooms.

This is a story of corruption in Texas schools by the Texas Education Association (TEA) who is the governing body of all public schools in Texas.
This is a story about my child who is being left behind as a Special Education student falling farther behind each year she is not getting her constitutional right of having a free public education.
This is a story about a devoted Special Education teacher with a Master's degree who has become one of Mike Miles' latest victims in his purge of all of these experts in their field - she has almost 30 years of experience as a teacher in HISD.
At the very least this is a personal interest story about a student struggling in the midst of policitians and school bonds.
Here's our story....
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a teacher. Teachers were so kind, caring, and full of passion to help their students thrive. Teachers build the world we live in, by building up the confidence and self esteem of those students they have over decades of their career. Those students grow up as parents of their own, have successful careers, and always remember that special teacher that made the biggest difference in their lives.
I remember every one of my teachers, professors, and mentors' names... Many of them are my Facebook friends as an adult. I remember Ms. Tharnish spent recess helping me with my math, I remember the smelly wood color blocks in 1's, 5's, 10's, etc. I was in 1st or 2nd grade at the time. She noticed that I was struggling, so she took the time during her break to help me. Fast forward 30-something years & I am a parent now with a student with several learning disabilities - dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, developmental coordination disorder, and inattentive ADHD. The more I learn about some of these academic struggles my daughter is having, I realize my brain works very similarly. I was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD at age 40. I probably also have dyslexia and dyscalculia as well. I was able to wing it enough to stay off the radar (for the most part), I knew how to brown nose with my teachers enough to never be a discipline issue. But I'm a classic case of ADHD in a woman - daydreamer, procrastinator, overthinker, my brain is typically going 200 mph with anxiety. I don't catch some social cue which has made me a target for some vicious bullying in my lifetime, made me also an easy target for some toxic relationships. All of this has affected every aspect of my life - parenting, relationships, career, my self confidence / mental health, etc. This is why early diagnosis, intervention, education, and advocating is so vital!
ADHD is considered by the experts as one of the most impairing disorders that you will see on an outpatient basis. 30% of the world is neurodivergent but we are taught and function in a neurotypical world.
When my son & I had cancer, I went back to school to be a nurse. Learning everything there was to learn about cancer was my hyperfocus. Knowledge is power. The more you know, the less you fear. Despite getting accepted into a BSN program, my plans were derailed with a surprise pregnancy. Instead I finished my bachelors' degree in Psychology while being a single mother of 5, even after losing everything during Hurricane Harvey.
During my journey to learn more about my daughter's challenges so I could advocate for her, I have met so many passionate, wonderful people! Special Education and Neurodiversity has become my newest hyperfocus. I am planning on getting my Masters degree in Special Education to be an educational diagnostician so I can advocate for not just my child, but other students and families struggling.
Here we are in May 2024, I have been on top of it since before my child was born when they discovered she carries a microdeletion on one of her chromosomes (TM4SF20) found in 5% of Southeast Asian populations. With a degree in Child Development, I caught every developmental delay & got intervention immediately... She participated in Easter Seals & the ECI (Early Childhood Intervention program) as a toddler for weekly speech and cognitive therapy. When she turned 3 years old, she was assessed by HISD to see if she qualified for the PPCD program, she did not. She did not qualify on any level for extra help by Houston ISD at age 3.
I still saw she was still struggling with cognitive aspects of her daily activities. I had her assessed by a Pediatric Educational Psychologist at Texas Children's Hospital for all the things I noticed that I was concerned about in her development. She has had multiple psychocognitive assessments in her lifetime (when she was a toddler, age 4, age 6, and has several evaluations by professionals). At age 4, she was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD and developmental coordination disorder. So she started physical and occupational therapy weekly at an outpatient facility to work on her fine and gross motor delays. At age 6, she was diagnosed with dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalculia as well. I even had her tested for Autism because I thought ABA therapy would definitely benefit her and in order for her to get ABA therapy she needed an autism diagnosis for her insurance to cover it. She started outpatient therapy at age 4 for occupational and physical therapy twice a week, she still continues this weekly at age 9 1/2.
She was in Catholic schools for PreK3, PreK4, and Kindergarten. We had to leave private schools after Kindergarten because of her learning disabilities and how it was affecting her academically.
In 1st grade, she started in Houston ISD & it's been a trial & error. Mostly errors. She was in general education with maximum pull outs. But they continued to fail her, she was getting farther and farther behind. It took a huge toll on her mental health. She had extreme anxiety that was causing selective mutism from the right accommodations and modifications being in place.
My daughter does not have an intellectual disability (IDD), but at this point there is no other placement for her in an HISD classroom except in a class with other students who have severe intellectual disabilities. In neighboring school districts like Katy ISD, they have an "in between '' classroom that would accommodate exactly what she would need, somewhere in between a general ed class with maximum pull outs and a self contained classroom (SLL).
I have found that the general education teachers lack the knowledge about typical learning disabilities like Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, even ADHD. Therefore, they lack empathy and patience while dealing with her. They spend most of their energy trying to get her out of their classroom instead of coming up with solutions to help her.
In March, I met her Special Education teacher at her elementary school in Houston ISD. She has a Masters degree and is one of the most knowledgeable people in the field that I have met. She has over 27 years of teaching experience in Special Education in Houston ISD. She is one of my daughter's biggest advocates! Houston ISD laid her off this week. She questioned the new principal who is a graduate of Mike Miles' principals academy. She begged and pleaded with the school that the conditions that she had to teach 15 students of various grade levels and abilities, in a special needs population was dangerous. She focused mostly on keeping the children SAFE than teaching them. She plans on contacting Chris Tritico, a local Houston attorney that is filing a class action lawsuit on behalf of all of the HISD teachers who have been wrongfully terminated by Mike Miles during his purge of educators, librarians, social workers / Wrap around specialists, principals, and anyone speaking out against his new policies that are meant for the kids to fail so his friends in the Charter Schools can come in soon and make billions.
I'm a very knowledgeable parent, very resourceful. I bring an educational advocate to every single ARD meeting & still keep hitting brick walls for my child.... We have been paying almost $2000/month for the past 3 years for 2 hours of after school tutoring ($1500/mo at the Houston Dyslexia School and paying one of her old Catholic school teachers for science / math tutoring). Her advocate, Our educational advocate is working on a complaint for TEA or OCR on behalf of SpEd kids in HISD who have "too high" class ratios in SLL classrooms. She worked as a resource teacher and dyslexia specialist for years in HISD, so she is very familiar with HISD. My older children were in private schools.
My child has ADHD and learning disabilities, nothing that can not be figured out so she can thrive academically. She is thriving with all the tutoring she does after school with a 1:1 or 1:5 teacher:student ratio. She is reading very well (testing at grade 2) and her comprehension is average. But HISD puts her in a classroom where she is not learning, not thriving, and the longer she spends in that classroom, the farther she will fall behind.
I will be filing a lawsuit against Houston ISD through the federal government and the Office of Civil Rights because my child who has a disability is not receiving a quality public education which is her constitutional right. I have already consulted with an attorney with the OCR in January 2024, but there seemed to be a tolerable plan in place that I wanted to see if it panned out. It has only turned into a bigger nightmare!
Houston needs to get this front and center - to speak up for teachers and students who are being silenced by HISD. I plan to advocate like hell for SpEd kids like all of the professionals I have met who have advocated for my daughter. I don't know where my daughter would be without them.
The sad part about all of this is that most parents don't have the personal and professional background that I do in Education, Nursing, and Psychology. I am very knowledgeable and still having found any solutions in such a broken school district like HISD and the takeover has made everything even more impossible with a corrupt Superintendent like Mike Miles who is purging so many experts in education and replacing them with uncertified, inexperienced teachers that won't question his irrational policies that are doomed to make the schools fail so that at the end of the 2 year TEA takeover, Miles' friends who have charter schools can come in and make billions with school bonds and pick a part Houston ISD into pieces. Charter schools are not good for Special Education students and what will be left of HISD will be inexperienced, uncertified teachers who lack the knowledge to help these kids thrive.
It is extremely important for my daughter and other students to get the proper accommodations and modifications, to get the right support at school so they can thrive. Without it, they will suffer drastically & it will affect every single aspect of their life as an adult.

2024.05.27 18:13 According-Value-6227 Project Vigilant: Glitch Techs

The information within this post is related to Project Vigilant or PV, an alternate-history, sci-fi, fantasy and fan-fiction-mega-crossover world-building project that I have been working on since early 2018.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the fandoms that has been incorporated into PV, is Glitch Techs.
Due to the abrupt and presumed cancellation of Glitch Techs in 2020, it is likely that the series story will remain perpetually un-resolved and any lore or important plot details will likely remain subject to NDA's at Nickelodeon.
For this reason, development of Glitch Techs in PV has required some original world-building efforts and I'd like to share what I have come up with.

In PV, Glitch Techs takes place in the city of Chilliwack. In reality, Chilliwack is located in Canada but in PV, it is located in the USA as part of the state of "Cascadia".
In PV, The Hinobi Corporation is replaced by an alternate version of the real-world Atari corporation. From my perspective, Hinobi is/was clearly a knockoff of Atari and since PV is an alternate history and fan-fiction project, I am under no obligation to avoid copyright so I can just use Atari. Plus, I think Atari has a cooler logo and more stuff to work with.
In PV, the events of Glitch Techs occur over the course of the Summer of 2020, Miko and Fives are both 16 years old ( Both born in 2004 ) and their jobs at Atari are temporary Summer Jobs.

ATARI IN PV
In reality, the original Atari died during the Video Game Industry Crash of 1983, having existed for only 10 years by that point. In PV, Atari was ridiculously successful and formed a titanium-clad monopoly over both the video game industry and the majority of the U.S Tech Industry.
As of 2020, Atari is, for all intents and purposes, the only gaming company in the USA and it fills the place of both Microsoft and Apple as well. Atari began making business and personal computers in 1975 and it released it's operating system T.O.S ( short for The Operating System ) in 1985. Atari's computing products between the mid to late 80's, 90's and early 2000s resembled Microsoft, however, in the mid to late 2000s, Atari's computing products transitioned into a more Apple-esque design scheme. In 2007, Atari launched the A-Phone, PV's equivalent to the IPhone.
The Atari of PV has a striking corporate design scheme/aesthetic that greatly resembles Tron: Legacy ( 2010 ). This aesthetic is made up of geometric red-neon lines and thick black glass. This design scheme is present on all Atari buildings and products, likewise in Atari Stores such as the one's that Miko and Fives work at, the black is swapped out for a white which was deemed to be more inviting.
As of 2020, Atari has produced 8 generations of consoles, collectively, the Atari Consoles in PV are known as the Atari 2600, 2700, 5200, 7800, 9600, 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000. Every Atari console is larger than the last and the Atari: 30,000 is about the size of a HP LaserJet P2014.
P.C Gaming does not really exist in PV as Atari's latest consoles can do almost everything a gaming PC can do such as modding. Atari has maintained a strong preference for physical media and all Atari games, mods or patches are sold via discs.

As of 2020, Atari is headquartered at the "Atari World Headquarters" a monolithic black skyscraper situated at the site of the Salesforce Tower in San Fransisco. Each side of the The Atari World Headquarters is lit up with the Atari Logo at all times and the building is the tallest in San Fransisco, standing at a height of 1,070 feet. It has 61 floors.
Many of the U.S game-companies that exist in reality, exist in PV as brands of Atari who operate similarly to the brands of General Motor's / GM, in the sense that each brand represents a genre of the product they produce. The current number of brands under Atari as of 2020 and their identities have yet to be determined, one of them is Treyarch which produces all of Atari's military-themed games.

The Atari of PV owes it's tremendous success to "Plixels", anomalous entities which made Atari's earliest products un-replicable and 50 years ahead of any possible competitors.
In Glitch Techs, "Plixels" are the source of the Glitches and they seem to originate from tiny green power-cells that are stored at the center of Hinobi Consoles. Due to the show's cancellation and lack of exposition, we don't know what Plixels are or where they come from, we only know what they can do.
In PV, Plixels are extra-spatial, energy-based and non-sentient life-forms. "Extra-spatial" means that they originate from our dimension, albeit a part of it that we cannot normally perceive. Plixels are brought into "Real-Space" ( reality as humans perceive it ) by a gigantic machine called the P.M.R ( Plixel Manifestation Reactor ) which is situated deep below the Atari World Headquarters. The P.M.R uses rudimentary space-folding to pull Plixels into real space wherein they are sealed inside energy-cells that force the Plixels into operating as living processors that are far more efficient at processing data than any real-world processor.
Half of the Plixels that the P.M.R manifests are turned into processors while the other half are destroyed at the atomic level and converted into a powerful source of energy known as "Plixel Energy" which functions similarly to ADAM in "Bioshock". Respectively, the Plixels themselves are somewhat similar to the ADAM Slugs.
Plixel Energy is described as being "infinitely programmable electricity". It powers the Glitch Techs advanced gear and it can also be used to rapidly modify DNA to advanced degrees. Hinobi employees with enough mission points from Glitch-Tech missions can actually purchase permanent body modifications.
Theoretically, Atari could use Plixel Energy to expand into the Energy Sector, however. Atari's leadership considers Plixel Energy to be far too volatile for such an endeavor.
The Glitches that the Glitch Techs battle are the result of Plixels breaking free from the containment of their energy cells and imprinting on the data within Hinobi game consoles, thus assuming the form of game characters. The hostility of Plixels/Glitches is a response to their confinement in Hinobi tech but as previously mentioned, they are not sentient. Rather, being purely impulsive and accustomed to unrestricted freedom.
Currently, I am not sure where the P.M.R comes from. Initially, I wanted it to be of alien origin, however I am currently leaning towards it being a remnant of a long-lost civilization that was discovered by Atari's founders in South America at some point between the late 60's and early '70s. It is likely that the P.M.R was discreetly moved from it's original location to it's site beneath the Atari World Headquarters.

ATARI STORES
Atari Stores such as the one that Fives and Miko work at in PV fill the place of Gamestop, although Atari stores are much larger and nicer by comparison, incorporating elements from Apple Stores, Best Buy, Dicks Sporting Goods, Barnes N' Noble and standard Arcades. The front facade of Atari Stores is usually built to resemble the Atari logo, the entrance doors are situated on the right side of the logo while the exit is situated on the left side. All Atari Stores possess the companies Tron-esuqe architectural style.

ATARI'S COMPETITION
Atari does not have any serious competitors, however, it's monopoly on Plixel-based technology begs the question as to how video-games work on PV's earth outside of Atari's purview.
In PV, real-world gaming technology still exists, however, it is limited to countries that Atari does not operate in and it's development was delayed by roughly 12 years as a response to Atari's monopoly over the video game industry. As of 2020, non Atari video games are in a late 2000s state while the performance of the average Atari game exceeds what is currently available to us in reality.

STORY OF GLITCH TECHS IN PV.
I have not determined everything that will happen in PV's version of Glitch Techs. What I do know is that the PV version of Glitch Techs will end with the staff of the Chiliwack Atari store exposing Atari's secrets.
Atari is doomed by the leak but The P.M.R is not what seals Atari's fate, rather it is the fact that Atari has used mind-wiping to cover up the deaths of certain Glitch Techs. Ie* if a teenage glitch tech employee dies on the Job, Atari simply alters the memories of their friends and families to make it seem like they never existed in the first place. Atari records indicate that this had been done on several hundred occasions.
Ultimately, on December 2nd, 2020, the U.S Government forcibly breaks up Atari into several smaller companies and confiscates the P.M.R, the video game industry suffers a "soft collapse" and is forced to transition to normal methods of data processing for future games. Foreign game companies begin to fill the void left by Atari.
