2024.05.19 11:04 Zanxiyo "The Whispering Shadows"

The old family home stood at the edge of town, its once grand facade now weathered and worn by time. The town's whispers about the house had reached my ears many times throughout my childhood, but I had never given them much thought. Now, standing before the creaking gate that led to the overgrown path, I felt an inexplicable urge to discover the truth.
I had inherited the house after my great-uncle Nathaniel passed away, a man I barely knew but whose presence seemed to linger in every corner. The dusty heirlooms and musty bookshelves hinted at a long and storied history. It was a history I intended to uncover.
The first few days were uneventful. I spent my time clearing out cobwebs and sorting through old papers, most of which were mundane—bills, letters, old photographs. But then, tucked away in a hidden compartment of Nathaniel's desk, I found a bundle of letters tied with a faded red ribbon. The letters were old, the paper yellowed and brittle. They were addressed to my great-grandmother, Beatrice, from someone named Arthur.
The letters spoke of forbidden love, betrayal, and a pact made in desperation. Arthur's words grew increasingly frantic as he described a dark secret shared by the family—a secret that, if revealed, would bring ruin upon them all. My curiosity piqued, I read on, unable to tear myself away.
One letter in particular stood out. Dated December 3, 1923, it detailed a horrific event: a fire that had claimed the lives of several townspeople. Arthur confessed to starting the fire, claiming it was necessary to protect the family from something far worse. He mentioned a cult, dark rituals, and a promise made to an entity he referred to only as "the Shadow."
The more I read, the more I felt an unsettling presence in the house. Shadows seemed to move on their own, and whispers echoed through the halls at night. Determined to understand, I ventured into the basement, where Nathaniel's journals hinted at more hidden secrets.
The basement was damp and cold, the air thick with mildew. Shelves lined with jars of strange substances and dusty books filled the room. At the far end, behind an old trunk, I found a small door. It creaked open to reveal a narrow staircase leading further down into darkness.
With a flashlight in hand, I descended, my heart pounding in my chest. The air grew colder with each step, and a sense of dread settled over me. At the bottom, I found a chamber filled with symbols carved into the stone walls. In the center was an altar, stained with what I could only hope was old wax.
As I examined the room, I found more letters, these from Nathaniel to someone named Margaret. They described rituals performed to keep the Shadow at bay, sacrifices made to ensure the family's prosperity. Nathaniel's last entry was a chilling plea for forgiveness, confessing that he had failed to uphold the pact and that the Shadow was coming for him.
Suddenly, the flashlight flickered and went out. Panic set in as I fumbled to turn it back on. When the light returned, I saw them—figures standing in the shadows, their eyes glowing with an unnatural light. They whispered in unison, a low chant that sent shivers down my spine.
"Blood of the betrayer," they intoned. "Blood of the guilty."
I tried to run, but my legs felt like lead. The figures closed in, their hands cold as ice as they grabbed me. I struggled, but it was no use. They dragged me to the altar, their chanting growing louder.
As they forced me down, I realized the truth: my family had been protecting a dark secret for generations, a secret that had now claimed me. The last thing I saw was a figure stepping out of the shadows, its eyes filled with malevolent glee.
The pain was sudden and all-consuming. My scream echoed through the chamber, blending with the chants. And then, there was nothing but darkness.
The house stood silent once more, its secrets buried deep within its walls. The townspeople still whispered about the old family home, but no one dared to venture inside. They said the shadows moved on their own, and at night, if you listened closely, you could still hear the whispers of the past.
Years passed, and the house remained untouched, a dark mark on the edge of town. Then, one evening, a young couple, unaware of the house’s history, moved in. They had bought the property cheaply, charmed by its antique allure.
Their first night in the house was uneventful. They laughed, unpacked, and made plans to renovate. But as the clock struck midnight, the atmosphere changed. The house seemed to come alive with a malevolent energy. The husband, Peter, heard a faint whispering. At first, he dismissed it as the wind, but the whispers grew louder, forming words.
"Blood of the betrayer... Blood of the guilty..."
He followed the sound to the basement, where the narrow door stood ajar. Against his better judgment, he descended the stairs. The flashlight flickered, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The chamber at the bottom was as I had left it, but now there was something new—a fresh inscription on the altar: "He who seeks shall find."
Peter turned to leave, but the shadows moved. Figures emerged, their eyes glowing with the same unnatural light. He screamed for help, but the basement door slammed shut, trapping him inside.
Upstairs, his wife, Emily, heard his screams and rushed to the basement door, but it wouldn't budge. She pounded on it, calling his name, but the house seemed to swallow her cries. Desperation set in, and she ran to the phone, dialing the police.
The police arrived quickly, but as they approached the house, they felt an unnatural chill. Inside, they found Emily, frantic and pale. She led them to the basement, but when they opened the door, the chamber was empty. There was no sign of Peter.
Days turned into weeks, and Peter was never found. Emily moved out, leaving the house abandoned once more. The townspeople spoke of the curse, of the family’s dark past, and warned newcomers to stay away.
But the house never stayed empty for long. Curiosity drew people in, and one by one, they disappeared, claimed by the shadows. The whispers continued, a never-ending chant of betrayal and guilt.
One stormy night, a group of ghost hunters arrived, eager to uncover the house's secrets. They set up their equipment, cameras rolling, as they ventured into the basement. The air was thick with tension, the shadows seemed to watch, waiting.
As they explored the chamber, the leader of the group, Sam, found the old letters. He read them aloud, his voice trembling. The whispers grew louder, the shadows closing in.
"Blood of the betrayer... Blood of the guilty..."
The cameras captured everything—the figures emerging from the darkness, the screams, the terror. But when the footage was reviewed, all that was visible was the empty basement, silent and still. The hunters were never seen again.
Years passed, and the house remained a dark legend. No one dared to enter, the whispers and shadows a constant warning. And yet, on moonless nights, the townspeople could see faint lights flickering in the windows, hear the faint whispers carried on the wind.
It was said that the house was a gateway, a place where the past and present intertwined, where the sins of the ancestors demanded atonement. Those who entered were lost, their souls trapped in a never-ending cycle of horror.
Then, one day, a young historian named James arrived in town. He was fascinated by the stories and determined to uncover the truth. Despite the warnings, he entered the house, armed with his knowledge and a sense of purpose.
He found the letters, the journals, the hidden chamber. But as he delved deeper, he uncovered something no one had seen before—a final letter from Nathaniel, hidden behind a loose brick. It spoke of a ritual to break the curse, to free the trapped souls.
With renewed hope, James prepared for the ritual, following the instructions meticulously. As he began, the house seemed to tremble, the shadows stirring violently. The whispers grew to a deafening roar, but he pressed on.
The final step required a sacrifice, a willing soul to take the place of the cursed. As James completed the ritual, he felt a searing pain. The shadows enveloped him, but he continued to chant the final words.
Suddenly, the whispers stopped. The shadows receded, and the house fell silent. The townspeople, watching from a distance, saw the lights go out and heard a final, blood-curdling scream.
The next morning, they found the house empty. The letters and journals were gone, the chamber sealed. James was never seen again, but the curse seemed to have lifted. The house stood silent, no longer a source of fear.
Years later, the house was sold and renovated. Families moved in and out, but the dark history remained a distant memory. The whispers and shadows were gone, but on stormy nights, the faint echoes of the past could still be heard, a reminder of the darkness that once lurked within.
And so, the legend of the old family home became a story told to children, a cautionary tale of curiosity and the consequences of uncovering secrets best left buried. But some say that on the darkest nights, if you listen closely, you can still hear the faint whisper: "Blood of the betrayer... Blood of the guilty..."

2024.05.19 06:41 Responsible-Meringue Naked at Last

I didn't have all the things for a Naked and Famous, or a Last Word. So I made the Naked at Last, aka the Flying Nudist... https://imgur.com/a/qFaf8mC
1.5 oz Gin
0.5 oz Mezcal
2 oz Green Chartreuse
2 oz Aperol
0.5 oz cherry syrup from the cocktail cherry jar
0.5 oz lime juice
Optional: 2 dash orange bitters, 1 egg white or 1oz chickpea wateaqua faba
Make: mix all, wet shake on ice. Fine strain. Dry shake to emulsify, fine strain into a n iced coupe or red wine glass. Garnish with a skewered black cherry.
Tastes more like a Paper Plane than I expected. More floral due to the Gin & Chartreuse, but with less depth & complexity sans Amaro. Smoke still comes through with the mezcal. I'm going to ice it down next time and serve it as a boozy spritz for spring/summer barbeque with seafood skewers.

2024.05.19 06:41 throwaway624203 Haven't eaten in three days.

I just realized tonight, I've forgotten to eat anything in the last three days. All I've done is drink water and iced tea. It's about 500 calories a day, but it's more than enough for me, not doing anything. Not only am I saving money on food, but I must say, it's a great way to lose weight fast, until you do eat again, in which case you shit water. Which if you can handle it, and how disgusting it is, it's not that much of a tradeoff.
Has anybody ever dealt with this? Done this accidentally? Tried this? I don't think I'd recommend it. Especially not to anyone with any kind of eating disorder. I'm also a giant fat disgusting blob who can afford to lose a few pounds without doing any damage.
Stay safe.

2024.05.19 06:02 beachguy82 Maraschino Cherry & Chocolate Kahlua Brownie

Maraschino Cherry & Chocolate Kahlua Brownie
Maraschino cherry: 1. S&S base but replace a 1/2 the milk with buttermilk
  1. Add a jar of chopped maraschino cherries and about 3/4 of the syrup. It’s the simplest ice cream I’ve ever made and it’s also my most universally loved flavor. Seriously, everyone loves it.
Chocolate Kahlua Brownie: 1. S&S base
  1. 1/4 cup dutched cocoa powder dissolved in 1/4 cup Kahlua.
  2. Bake brownies of your choice but blend in a cup of melted marshmallows to keep the brownies from freezing hard.
These two flavors go really well together.

2024.05.19 05:30 nineninety-nine I only like room temperature drinks

I never get ice in my drinks, I absolutely cannot stand cold water I have to wait for it to be room temperature. When I get water from my fridge, I fill up my water bottle and let it sit until it’s room temperature. There’s something about it that just makes it more savory, same with soda. I always leave a bottle out in my room and drink it later, I feel it tastes better, I just hate cold drinks. And with hot drinks, I leave them out longer than I do to make sure they’re room temperature, mostly hot teas. I can’t explain it but tastes better.

2024.05.19 05:06 Snoo-81916 Still can't find something I like

I'm going to be 23 in a week. I have still never had a full serving of an adult beverage in my life. Sips here and there but they have all been met with a disgusting look on my face after tasting.
I don't even know what it feels like to be under the influence of alcohol.
I have tried angry orchard. I have tried Smirnoff ice. I've tried simply spiked lemonade. Didn't care for it. After that I just gave up trying stuff.
Angry orchard was carbonated and I wasn't expecting it, didn't like that it was carbonated.
Simply spiked lemonade was carbonated and I didn't like that.
Smirnoff ice tasted too much like a energy drink, which I didn't like.
Not doing beer.
What I hate also is that when you go to the store you can't just buy one, you have to buy a 6 pack. So I have 5 left that will not get drank, and I can't help but regret choosing the booze instead of minute maid or Snapple, or Apple juice. I don't feel comfortable going to a bar.
Any suggestions for drinks? If its like some kind of fruity drink or spiked tea, it cannot be carbonated. And for the record, I'm not going to try a $15 drink at a bar.

2024.05.19 04:33 just-aperson- Longest/weirdest but good drink

What the titles says. What's the weirdest, or longest ticket producing drink you or you coworkers enjoy. Customer drinks not included.
I'll start. I call this the green hills.
It's a 24oz drink usually.
Double matcha, (like, an entire table spoon of unsweetened matcha powder.) Cinnamon tea. (I work at bigbby, so it Fraser band hot spicy cinnamon which is a cinnamon and orange peel black tea) Oat milk (only a little) Marshmallow syrup White chocolate syrup, +best with macadamia Extra flavor, (totals to 8 pumps) And then cold foam, with cinnamon powder.
This is iced usually.
And sometimes I make This beast with a double or tripple shot of espresso.
I call it green hill because it makes you ZOOM like sonic. And it's green.
Our matcha is like 300 mg of matcha per serving .cuz my store uses Fraser for our matcha as well and I use 2-3 servings for This thing. Plus the cinnamon tea is like 100+. And there's two satchets of that.
This thing is more caffeinated that the Panera charged lemonade that caused a lawsuit.
1k-1.3k mg of caffeine for those curious.

One more thing read # 4
I just spent the last five days with high fever, chills, sweats, and literal hallucinations - it was not Covid as I tested and I am fever free since yesterday afternoon..
Having a bit of an issue with flow when normally it’s the extreme opposite (incontinence) and now I’m wondering if all that sweating and drinking juices, water, ice pops, tea caused a kidney stone. Funny thing is the day before the fever / sweats started I had excruciating pain on right side by kidney.

2024.05.19 03:24 Leenolyak Is it weird that I’ve memorized the speed of the different faucets’ water pressures? 😅

I know that our cold brew takes 7 seconds to fill a tall, 10 seconds to fill a grande and about 12-13 seconds for a venti. I know that iced teas take 13 seconds for the hot water and then 19 seconds for the cold water after steeping. I know that refresher base pitchers take about 15 seconds under the faucet. I literally just count the seconds as I’m doing the next task and then can stop whatever faucet without needing to look at the fill lines. Am I ridiculous or is this normal for yall 😭

2024.05.19 01:52 210poyo Meal plans/meal ideas?

SW 345 GW 220ish - Since Jan 1st I've lost close to 30lbs. Started with .5mg then progressed to 1.mg. My Dr. Meets with me monthly when I get my semaglutide to check in and monitor progress and we will be doing blood work every 4 months.
I've been drinking a gallon of water a day, toned out the food noise. I haven't really set a meal plan or looked into dieting while on Semaglutide.
What I have done though is 1). Cut out majority of sugary drinks. I'll have maybe 1 coke a week, rest of the time it's a gallon of water a day religiously, unsweet tea, sugar free iced coffee from the local coffee spot a few times a month (maybe like 2-3 times a week). 2.). Protein based meals. I'm a meat eater so it might be a partial chicken breast, house/chef salad, grilled chicken wings, some bbqd beef pork chicken etc etc. All in smaller portions than what I used to. 3.) I cut my carbs down to like 50ish carbs a day 4.) Eating only when I'm hungry, and not snacking on junk food through the day. Although to satisfy "hunger" or occasional food noise I'll eat a few baby carrots n ranch 5.) Starting tomorrow I will be getting more active, probably start with a 15min walk and progress to 30min then I'd like to get in the gym at some point.
All of this is new to me and I'd like to make better progress. I don't want to just let the semaglutide do the work, I know I need to have a lifestyle change to maximize my weight loss and getting healthier. So with all that said ....
What are y'all eating for meals, snacks, drinks and exercise?

2024.05.19 01:30 MisoVicious Eight years ago, I got an email from Barbara. Here’s the story:

TL;DR at the bottom.
So, for those of whom don’t remember, there was a time where RT Sponsor dues were just $10 every six months. And when you’re thirteen years old, without a source of income aside from the very rare allowance your mom gives you, $10 is a lot of money. I was neck deep in my love of RT content, but I was dying to take it to the next level with Sponsor exclusive content. So, I bartered with my mom to cover the payments in exchange for chores. Hindsight, she probably got the better end of the deal, but I was over the moon. I got that star next to my name, and that was all that mattered.
Cut to a few years later, they’ve upped the cost from $10 every six months to $19.99 every six months. But, people like me who signed up prior to the price change were grandfathered in and were still paying the old price. However, Chelsea did state that if there was a lapse in payment, you’d lose your grandfather status. Easy enough, right?
If only it could’ve lasted forever. But my mom’s debit card expired, and as you could imagine, this lead to a lapse in payment. Obviously, I was distraught. I was a broke college student, my daily lunch was a bag of microwave popcorn and a can of Arizona Iced Tea. I emailed support and begged them for help, but they told me there was nothing they could do. I told my mom what had happened, and how sad I was, but she insisted I should call and ask to be transferred to whomever was in change. That there had to be someone who could change the price back. I called, got to the supervisor, and they told me the same thing: they couldn’t do anything to help me, and that they were sorry for my predicament. I blamed myself, and wallowed in my self-loathing for a few days.
Imagine my surprise when I’m having dinner with my parents, and I’m telling my dad this whole story, when my mom tells me she’s going to straighten it out. The exchange goes like this:
Mom: It’ll be okay, honey. I’m going to fix this.
Me: Wait, what does that mean?
Mom: Don’t worry about it. I’m taking care of it.
Me: I’m very worried now. What are you talking about? What did you do?
Mom: I just emailed support, told them I was your mother, and I wasn’t going to let them treat you like this. You’ve been a loyal customer and fan for too long, you deserve better treatment.
Me: … Please tell me you’re joking.
Mom: I just told them the truth. You’re a good kid. And you shouldn’t be punished for something that was an accident.
Me: I’m not being punished, it’s just their policy. Punishment would be banning me from the site because my mother is harassing their support staff via email.
Mom: Oh it’s not harassment. I was very polite, but I made it clear that I wasn’t going to let you go down without a fight.
Me: Without a fight?! Mom! What did you say?
Here’s something you need to know about my mom: she’s never one to take something lying down. Especially when it comes to her kids. The admin in our schools knew her by name, and knew she wasn’t one to be trifled with. She was like an urban legend. Whenever she felt we weren’t being treated fairly or got in trouble for something that wasn’t our fault, it would only take one phone call before the school was apologizing to her for their “mistake” and hope she would forgive them. I’m pretty sure she was on some sort of call list that immediately routed her to the head of school. Crazy parents wish they could reach my mother’s level. She’s capable of destroying people like a hurricane destroys a city.
So, I knew what it meant when my mom said she was “taking care of it”. It meant she was going to put the fear of god into them. And if they wouldn’t relent, I think she would have got on the first plane to Austin and “taken care of it” in person, which is the nuclear option. Your only choice at that point would be to move out of her way or get rolled over. It’s a terrifying sight.
She showed me the email, and it was everything I feared. It mentioned like ten times that she was my mom, how sad I was, how I cried, how wrong they were, how she wasn’t going to let this happen, they were going to fix this, and how this wasn’t how you treated a child (I WAS IN COLLEGE). Needless to say, I was horribly embarrassed. I needed to leave the country, assume a new identity, get plastic surgery to change my face, then make a new account on the site. The best I could hope for was that her email would go into a junk folder for crazy moms and they would never read it.
I was not so lucky.
A few days later, my mom shows me how she got a response from someone who was at the top of the food chain.
God strike me down, for it was the people’s Queen herself.
Barbara Dunkleman.
Her response to my mother’s unhinged email was nothing short of polite. She apologized for what happened, explained that her team, while growing in size, was still quite small. So they weren’t able to give my case the care it deserved. But reiterated what we heard from four different people at customer service: there was nothing that could be done.
But, Barbara graciously offered a year of free membership to compensate for my “distress”.
I was mortified.
Twelve years I was the girl with the terrifying mom in school, now her terror has spread amongst the RoosterTeeth staff.
If I knew this was how it would end up, I would’ve suffered through the loss of my grandfathered Sponsorship in silence instead of sharing my feelings with my mom.
To be perfectly honest, I actually avoided meeting Barbara at RTX because I was afraid she would remember my name. Realistically, she probably wouldn’t have. She meets so many fans and dealt with so many users on a daily basis, I was probably just a distant memory to her. But I wasn’t willing to take that chance. Go to a signing, introduce myself, then Barbara starts slowly backing away in case my mom is in the area.
And I thought I would take this story to my grave. But with everything that’s happened, and everyone sharing their stories, I thought what the heck.
Barbara, if you’re reading this, please know that I am sorry for my mother. Wish I met you irl at RTX when I had the chance.
TL;DR: Lost my grandfathered sponsor rates due to an expired debit card. My mom decided to intervene when I gave up hope, and sent a SCATHING email to RT support. Barbara herself responded and was very nice and helpful. I’m still embarrassed about this.
