2024.05.19 14:43 swiftonn Any same-sex parents here? Share your experience!

Need some fellow same-sex parents to shed some light here. Moms and dads can absolutely chip in toošŸ˜Š.
My girlfriend and I are a same-sex couple raising her 31 month old son (from a previous relationship) together, with primary custody of him. His father sees him occasionally, but not consistently, unfortunately. The little one has really grown to love me and come to me for comfort, he even sees me as a "second mommy" now.
I have made it extremely clear to my girlfriend that I want more children in the (near) future, especially to be able to give the little guy siblings to grow up with.
My girlfriend's baby daddy, among other people in our lives, have made comments insinuating that the child NEEDS a father and won't thrive without one. For her son, obviously it's a little different. He biologically has a father and should absolutely have a relationship with him. On the other side of things, our children that we decide to have later on will not have that "luxury" that he has, and I fear they will envy their big brother for having a father and them only having 2 moms.
I also had a slick comment made to me at work a couple weeks ago. I was talking about how bad the boy has been (he's 31 months, only 2.5 and in his terrible twos!), and a coworker that I talk to frequently piped up and asked if his dad's in his life. I told him that he's not as present as he could be, and he proceeded to tell me that is the reason why he is so misbehaved (lack of male figure in his life).
For a disclaimer, although I do not have to explain anything to anyone; her son has plenty of male figures in his life, regardless of his father's inconsistency. And don't get me wrong, I am a MOTHER but I do have a father figure-esque to myself, having grown up with boys and loving sports/video games. I want to get him into football when he's older and coach him, play video games with him, whatever he desires to do in his childhood is what he will get from us. I have a handful of nephews that I grew up around and helped raise so I got a feel for when it comes time to potty train, making sure they're being hygienic (if uncircumcised), etc.. We also do a damn good job at disciplining him and I do not believe that has anything to do with gender (although I am up to discussion, I suppose).
I'm in my very early 20s, helping my girlfriend raise her son. I stay home with him during the week (I work weekends), and I love being a parent figure to the little guy and absolutely cannot wait to bring more littles into the world. But the comments and criticism that we have receive makes it awfully discouraging, and disheartening even. Hoping to get some uplifting feedback from fellow same-sex parents doing the damn thing. Or even mom and dads that just see it differently.

2024.05.19 14:43 MrSaltanat My first ever loaf

My first ever loaf
I made my starter about 3 weeks ago and finally bit the bullet and had a go.
I used the recipe on this website : https://www.theperfectloaf.com/simple-weekday-sourdough-bread/#tasty-recipes-12416-jump-target
I figured the best way to learn was by doing. Even though it clearly isā€¦over?under? Proved/fermented it still had a lovely tangy taste and a nice chew to the crust.
I donā€™t have a Dutch oven so used a standard non stick pot with a lid.
Iā€™m not sure if my house gets warm enough and my oven only gets up to about 240C.
Iā€™m willing to learn and practice though!
Sorry about the rambling post. I donā€™t often post to Reddit but feedback would be nice :)

2024.05.19 14:43 Ridiculous-plimsole ā€˜Sunny Sunday Fryoffā€™

Hereā€™s my monthly fry-up breakfast a home made burger with chilli flakes 5% fat, two free range egg and leak slices mix, toms and a fried bap and some Branston. The drink is a kiwi, broccoli, lemon, ginger and tangerine smoothy. Iā€™d call this healthily unhealthy! But itā€™s super tasty. I donā€™t like beans and only ate the eggs because theyā€™re going out of date late April but still sunk when droppped in water!

2024.05.19 14:41 TheMortgageMaster Pro Tip: Provide all of your documents

Back on TOTM 2 I talked about the importance of providing all of your documents, not only so your brokebanker can accurately give you a qualification amount, but I have a quick story form this week to share to drive the point home about the importance of documents.
I've been working with a couple for about 6 months now, and they provided all of the documents I've asked for back then without any hesitation, delays, or arguing. Awesome people for sure. They were just window shopping at the time and wanted to see how much they'd qualify for. Fast forward a few months and they've found a great house, made an offer and it was accepted. I applied for their mortgage and it was approved. A couple of days before closing I got a request for an explanation on a slight discrepancy on the paystubs, as sometimes files get audited just before funding. It was no big deal at all, I provided the old letter of employment and did the math on when the client got a pay raise and the lender agreed and approved it an hour later. No fuss, no muss, and I didn't even need to bother the clients for anything.
Now imagine the stress and last minute panic if I didn't get the documents earlier, and now the client had to go back to their HR to find the old pay scale, write a letter explaining when the pay raise happened, etc. Do you think all of that would've happened in an hour? Two days before closing?
My advise when it comes to documents are:
  1. Run, don't walk, away from any so called mortgage professional that doesn't ask for the proper documents and just spews out a qualification amount, or interest rate blindly.
  2. Provide all of the required documents. We ask for them for a reason, and one of us have a fetish for bugging you, and collecting needless documents.
Have a a great long weekend.

2024.05.19 14:41 SubstantialCreme7748 Howie Carr in Canton Townies and the Karen Read Case

https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/05/18/howie-carr-karen-read-trial-is-a-corrupt-canton-townie-sideshow/
POSTED: Howie Carr: Karen Read trial is a corrupt Canton townie sideshow
PUBLISHED: May 18, 2024 at 4:25 p.m. UPDATED: May 18, 2024 at 4:27 p.m.
Paul Revere used to summer every year in Canton, but he wouldnā€™t recognize the place today.
One thing, though, hasnā€™t changed since the 18th of April in ā€™75 ā€” the locals still love their midnight rides, but with one big difference.
Paul Revere wasnā€™t hammered out of his mind when he was on horseback, spreading the alarm to every Middlesex village and farm.
Through the first 14 days of the Karen Read murder trial in Dedham, we have learned much about life in the Town of Canton, post-Paul Revere.
As you know, Read is accused of murdering her boyfriend, BPD cop John Oā€™Keefe, by drunkenly running him over in a snowstorm in January 2022.
His body was found outside the home of another BPD officer, who has since sold the house, gotten rid of his phone and dog and abruptly retired from the job, not that thereā€™s anything wrong with that.
How screwed up is this case? Well, the feds are all over it like white on rice.
Readā€™s defense attorneys have said the G-menā€™s accident-reconstruction experts have concluded that Oā€™Keefe couldnā€™t possibly have been killed by a car.
Then there are all those texts that havenā€™t been ā€œmistakenlyā€ deletedā€¦
The stateā€™s lead investigator is thisclose to the Hibernian hillbillies who are up to their eyeballs in this mess.
According to opening statements, State Trooper Michael Proctorā€™s first thought when he was assigned the case was to text his Canton high-school buddies. He told them he was already searching online for nude photos of Karen Read.
Proctor is now under investigation by MSP Internal Affairs ā€” if only because itā€™s the feds who discovered his texts, rather than the corrupt Staties themselves.
How will Proctor do on cross-examination? Do you remember an LAPD detective by the name of Mark Fuhrman?
Back on the stand Tuesday will be Jen McCabe. Sheā€™s the one whoā€™s missing one of her front teeth.
Donā€™t confuse Toothy McCabe with Julie Albert. Julie is the one who chews gum while testifying. Her fatherā€™s name is/was Jack Daniels ā€” coincidence?
Julie is married to Chris Albert. He did a six-month state bit in 1995 after killing a Hungarian exchange student in a hit-and-run accident.
His public defender was one John Prescott, whose sister is the judge in the case ā€” Beverly Cannone. Sheā€™s a lifelong payroll patriot from Quincy, like the rotund district attorney, Meatball Mike Morrissey.
If you want to hide something real good, just stick it in one of Judge Cannoneā€™s law books.
From her courtroom rulings, Cannone seems to believe that the synonym for ā€œexculpatoryā€ is ā€œexcluded,ā€ as in, if the evidence is exculpatory for Karen Read, itā€™s excluded.
Chris Albert, by the way, is a Canton selectman. As the only jailbird in the fight, he was elected in a landslide. Forget it Jake ā€” itā€™s Canton.
Even if you havenā€™t been paying close attention, there are easy ways to figure out whoā€™s who. The townies ā€” which is everyone except the defendant ā€” all pronounce their hometown not as ā€œCantonā€ but as ā€œCan-UHN.ā€
Hereā€™s how the examination begins after each witness is sworn in.
Where do you live? Can-UHN. Where were you born? Can-UHN. Where did you go to high school? Can-UHN High.
Have you ever been anywhere else? Yes, once I drove to a packyā€¦ in Stough-UHN.
Selectman Albert owns the local pizza parlor. On the night John Oā€™Keefe died outside his brotherā€™s house, he closed his shop, then walked across the street to a local dive where he ordered ā€œappetizers.ā€ Thatā€™s how good his own restaurant is.
Then, meeting up with the rest of the Can-UHN townies, the selectman ordered the usual ā€” a round of Fireballs. How Canton is it?
After last call, he offered to take the crapulous crew back to his pizzeria for some free eats. Everybody saidā€¦ nah.
Almost all these people live, or did live, in the same houses they grew up in, bought by their parents 50 years ago as they fled Boston after the start of busing.
Lucky for them they inherited these tear-downs, because otherwise most of them would have already fled back to their natural habitat ā€” trailer parks.
See, Cantonā€™s on the commuter-rail line, so housing prices have been going up, up and away. Itā€™s only a matter of time until all these low-rent losers are priced out.
So resentment is simmering among the old Can-UHN crowd. They donā€™t like whatā€™s happening ā€” just last year, their favorite hang-out, Big Dā€™s Neponset Grill, went out of business.
It was the last place in town where you could get a fried-baloney sandwich. Now that was some really fine Can-UHN cuisine.
What must the U.S. attorney be thinking as he watches this legal lynching unfold in deepest, darkest Dedham? The defense has said in open court that the feds already have a proffer ā€” a deal ā€” with the only witness who didnā€™t go to Can-UHN High.
The hack prosecutor did not dispute the statement.
Judge Cannone has instructed all the parties not to mention that federal grand jury, where at least three cops have apparently told conflicting stories from what they testified before Meatballā€™s state grand jury.
But the other day, one of the younger witnesses was asked whoā€™s questioned him about Oā€™Keefeā€™s death.
ā€œThe feds,ā€ he blurted out in front of the jury.
Well, what could you expect? He went to Can-UHN High.
This trial is drawing a huge audience. Unlike Trumpā€™s kangaroo-court case in New York, there are cameras in the Dedham courtroom. Live streaming coverage.
And Karen Read is not guilty. Tensions are running high. There have been fights and restraining orders ā€” and thatā€™s just among the reporters.
Aidan ā€œTurtleboyā€ Kearney is the blogger whoā€™s made the case into a national story. Heā€™s been barred from the courtroom for certain witnesses ā€” the ā€œMcAlberts,ā€ as he calls the Alberts and the McCabes.
The McAlbert witnesses begin weeping when they talk about Turtleboy. He makes them want to spit out their chewing gum and order another round of Fireballs.
How dare he call their hero Jailbird Chris Albert ā€œChicken Parm Charlie?ā€
I have Turtleboy on my radio show most afternoons. On Friday, he said Jen McCabe has a worse set of teeth than George Washington did.
The most appealing thing about this case is that you can watch it and feel better about your own hometown. In Holbrook, they listen to Chicken Parm Charlie and realize that he makes their ex-selectman Daniel Lee look like Daniel Webster.
In Methuen, they see Cantonā€™s Keystone Cops and think, you know, maybe Chief Solomon wasnā€™t that bad after allā€¦
If Paul Revere could only see whatā€™s become of Canton, heā€™d put the spurs to Brown Beauty and keep riding. Only instead of ā€œThe British are coming!ā€ heā€™d be yelling something different. ā€œThe white trash are coming!ā€

2024.05.19 14:40 TofuChewer Stop promoting lab grown meat, it isn't vegan

"but it reduces suffering and deaths"
Irrelevant for veganism.
We want to give rights to conscious living beings, not reducing their suffering or number of deaths.
Otherwise vegans would be perfectly fine with free range meat and vegetarians.
Lab grown meat is made by violating fundamental animal rights such as freedom and not being exploited, promoting the selective breeding of innocent conscious living beings and giving money to farmers, who'll perpetuate abuse and exploitation in the meat industry. Every single company will use at least one cow, where do you think they will get them? What do you think they will do to those cows? You are still seeing animals as commodities you can exploit needlessly for pleasure and profit.
Would it be okay for me to kidnap a child from the streets or buy it as a slave only to get cells from it and make a product? No. Then what is the trait that is not in animals that if lacking in humans would justify doing that?
Is it okay to promote products tested in animals? or zooes? No. "but no one is being harmed" You are violating their rights and seeing them as commodities.
Lastly, we have the vegan option, the one we should promote, a plant based diet and all kinds of substitutes of animal products, respecting animal rights, etc.
There is no need to violate their rights and exploit them, why do it needlessly for pleasure when you can be vegan? Stop being hypocrites and advocate for the only way we can give rights to animals: veganism.
Lab grown meat is not vegan.

2024.05.19 14:39 Hopeful-Mirror1664 Furnace/Air Filters for external pond filter

Iā€™m building a 100 gallon filter for my pond using a 100 gallon stock tank. I was thinking of using cut to fit air filter material from Home Depot. The package says nothing about and added chemicals and says itā€™s made from natural materials. Itā€™s green and looks like plastic/poly material. Has anyone tried this. I donā€™t see anything about any antibacterial additives or flame retardant on the packaging.

2024.05.19 14:39 rjoyfult Toddler asthma diagnosis from one ER visit?

Hey, just looking for some insight into this from parents of kids with asthma.
My 2.5yo has been battling a cold this week. Yesterday he woke up from his nap shaking and gasping. My husband rushed him to urgent care, who in turn recommended he go to the ER. Throughout the course of the afternoon into the evening, he was given a nebulizer, steroids, and Motrin. He was x-rayed and tested for RSV, flu, and Covid. He got negative results on everything, and was sent home with a script for a nebulizer and a steroid.
The discharge paperwork is full of information about dealing with asthma in kids, although my husband doesnā€™t think the doctor actually told them that was the official diagnosis.
Both my husband and I had asthma as children, so thereā€™s certainly a history there and a possibility that he has it. But we know nothing about the diagnosis process. Surely it takes more than one short ER visit? Weā€™ll follow up with his pediatrician, but should we be looking for a specialist to evaluate in depth in order to get a more official diagnosis?
Just looking for some insight because neither my husband nor I have any memory of how we got to the point of receiving our diagnoses as children.

After three hard-fought quarters against the Nuggets, the Grizzlies eventually lost.
Much like most of the seasonā€™s games, they displayed convincing moments. Whenever the opponent attempted to push the game into a decisive depth, TJ would call a timely timeout to catch a breath and then immediately launch a counterattack. If you were an unfamiliar fan tuning in during the final moments of many games, youā€™d be puzzled: who are these guys? How are they tying the score against Joker, JT, Bron, and AD? But most of the time, effort couldnā€™t beat talent.
No worries, I was just as surprised as you. But after watching the Grizzlies' final game of the season in the early morning, I took a deep breath as the fleeting memories of the past six months flashed before my eyes like a slideshow, and I understood them.
This is the Grizzlies' second-lowest win rate season in the past 15 years. They had 33 players wear the jersey, missed 578 games due to injury, and used 51 different starting lineups (all NBA records). Even one of the leagueā€™s loudest home courts, FedEx Forum, often had many empty seats for most of the season.
"For just $2, you can see Timmy Allen, Jack White, and Zavier Simpson play live!"
This isnā€™t a joke. On April 9, facing the Spurs at home, all three played at least 25 minutes. They limited Rookie of the Year Wemby to 18 points on 19 shots but were still dominated on the boards by Sandro Mamukelashvili and lost the game.
Despite several key players coming and going, last season the Grizzlies boasted the league's best home record (35-6), but this season they only won nine games at home. After back-to-back home losses to the Blazers (who finished last in the West with 21 wins but beat the Grizzlies three times) on March 2, GG Jackson admitted postgame:
"You see your fans leaving with like 8 minutes left in the game, that really sticks us as players. They want to come see us play. And that's kind of like them slapping us in our faces like, 'We don't want to see you play.' We've got to change that."
I understand these people. This has been a season full of hardship for players, coaches, management, the team, fans, and the city. From before the season, we were devastated by unprecedented injuries. Anyone still paying attention to this team is a true Grizzlies fan. Special credit to the players and coaching staffā€”by January, the season had already lost its meaning. The basketball gods didnā€™t favor them despite Jaā€™s season-ending injury but instead brought more injuries. Yet, even so, they fought on and never gave up. I donā€™t recall any game being "surrendered"ā€”no matter how few players were left, they gave it their all on the floor.
https://preview.redd.it/godn2cysld1d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=88a5a76c9627381d1ec46d31f5875dfa10b2957c
My favorite artist Taylor Swift released her 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department," today, and Iā€™m willing to call the 2024 Grizzlies "The Tortured Players Department"ā€”injured, pained, struggling, liberated, relieved, and then filled with hope.
I donā€™t know how fans will remember and evaluate this most painful season in NBA history ten years from nowā€”but while the memories are still fresh, Iā€™ll do it now.

Two Black Swans

If we set the start of a season as the day after playoff elimination, then as early as last May, shadows had already enveloped the team. Like me, Morant wasnā€™t good at live streaming, and for the second time, he brandished a gun in a car. When I got the news, I was packing for a trip to Guangzhou the next day and nearly tore a basketball sock in half.
Opinions on the Smart trade were generally positive, and Raymon and I were full of praise for GG and Slaw Dawgā€™s Summer League performances on the Chinese Grizzlies podcast. Missing Morant for 25 games meant we couldnā€™t secure home-court advantage like the past two years, but securing a play-in spot seemed reasonable. In an open Western Conference, all it took was a lucky playoff matchup, and a full-strength team could still achieve something.
Then Stevo was out for the season.
Unlike Morant's short-term impact on the record, this was a heavy blow to all remaining hope. I dejectedly said:
"No matter what, they canā€™t play like last year or even the year before, and they canā€™t find another Adams through trade or signing. The Grizzliesā€™ new season hasnā€™t even started, but it might already be over."
At this point, it was just three days before the season opener. The appearance of two black swans cast a shadow over the season before it even began.

Finding Joy in Suffering

The Grizzlies' first 25 games were like me trying to stand on a balance ball in the gym for the first timeā€”standing seemed not too difficult, but whenever I tried to squat, my legs started shaking uncontrollably, and most of the time, I fell off.
After five straight losses, the Grizzlies quickly signed the overlooked Biyombo and then played some decent games, but the injury wave followed one after another. At the most extreme, the Grizzlies had to use their paper-thin fourth point guardā€”Jacob Gilyard, who should have shined in the G Leagueā€”a player about my height and weight because Ja, Smart, and Rose were all injured.
https://preview.redd.it/zmk62bq3md1d1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=4ee1bbd1eda0ba13c4715fcf15391b5fdc67de32
To be fair, the Grizzlies showed resilience at that time. Facing the "BIG4 Clippers," the Grizzlies won their second game of the season on the road. Gilyard (6+5+3+3) held his own against Harden (11+4+3); against a full-strength Celtics, Aldama put up 28+12+6 and almost pulled off an upset; Bane dropped 49 points to lead a comeback win over the Pistons, scoring in the fourth quarter as much as Cunningham, Bojan, Duren, and Ivey combined.
The Grizzlies could keep up with most paper-strong teams and even come back from 15-20 points down but usually lost in the final moments. Bane took on an overwhelming offensive load, being the only consistent scorer, three-point shooter, and transition player, but he mostly held up; JJJ was often forced to play the five, which he disliked, making both offense and defense awkward and inefficient. As for the untested young players, they rarely held the ball securely in the fourth quarter.
With a 6-19 record, second-to-last in the West, trailing the play-in zone by more than five games; Baneā€™s performance was the teamā€™s lone standout, determining both the floor and ceiling; aside from JJJ, Aldama, and Roddy, almost no one was healthy. The Grizzliesā€™ net rating still ranked higher than their record, their defensive efficiency remained in the top ten, but they couldnā€™t score.

A Brief Spring

December 20ā€”just an ordinary game day, but Grizzlies fans had been waiting almost four months. The Pelicans, with their formidable build, werenā€™t an ideal opponent after a long layoff, but Morant loved such games. He probed in the first two quarters and then started showcasing his signature gliding layups and near-basket floaters in the third. He almost blew past every defender, gesturing "too small" to Alvarado, laying it up over defensive player Herbert Jones. On the final play, he drove from the backcourt, bypassed the screen, and floated a shot over Jones, Murphy, and Danielsā€”off the backboard, into the basket, buzzer beater.
This was Morantā€™s first career buzzer-beater. Interestingly, after the shot, even the Grizzlies players on the court paused for a second before realizing they had won, with Bane even freezing at the three-point line.
I understand Bane. In the first 25 games, the Grizzlies didnā€™t have such clutch play; this was a moment where a superstar wielded his superpower.
https://preview.redd.it/ivoxez05md1d1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=88313b44ea6967be3578b9d99f8eadcbd450a207
Morant posted the highest points for a player returning after missing more than 25 games in history, but more thrilling for fans was that the Grizzlies truly became competitive. They quickly won four in a row, beating the hot Haliburton, Trae, and Wemby, and winning twice against the Pelicans on the road. Bane and JJJ were in great form, and Smartā€™s fourth-quarter lockdown on Ingram was impressive.
With the return of injured players, we began to calculate and discuss the Grizzlies' playoff prospects. Morant caught the flu and missed one game, played poorly in the next twoā€”nothing to say as I was also down with the fluā€”recovered, and then convincingly defeated Bron and ADā€™s Lakers on the road. Smart scored 29 points (including a ton of threes), Morantā€™s scattered scoring and assists, JJJ turned into Curry, and Bane turned the arena into a library with a series of off-the-dribble threes in the fourth quarter. After the game, Nemo and JJJ sat on the scorerā€™s table for an ESPN interview: "Youā€™re making a playoff push, whatā€™s your plan?"
https://preview.redd.it/mddc8fv8md1d1.png?width=2182&format=png&auto=webp&s=865924dab3881c277783c53a5f40acf1a53504b3
Jaren smiled lightly, and Nemo said, "Keep playing like this, 48 minutes of relentless effort every night, execute our signature defense, move the ball, and everyone being on point. Tonight, we had many guys scoring 20+, like Z. Keep this up, and weā€™ll be dangerous."
We didnā€™t see Nemo play again; a few days later, he was diagnosed with a torn labrum and was out for the season; two games later, Smart dislocated his finger and was out for the season; another two games, Bane went down, and the season was over.

The Dawn

Just two weeks after hope reignited, it was extinguished. What was left to see this season? I believe every Grizzlies fan asked themselves this question. At this point, you have to appreciate the basketball gods; when they close one door, they really do open another.
ā€”ā€”Back on December 1, with no one available, TJ put Vince Williams into the rotation. As last yearā€™s 47th pick, his rookie year saw no meaningful time, mainly playing in the G League. In the limited effective game sample, we considered him a wing ā€œshooterā€ who couldnā€™t handle the ball or defend wellā€”he hadnā€™t even shot well in Summer League.
In his first effective NBA game, Vince scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, adding nine rebounds. He stayed on in the fourth quarter, impressively defending Irving. The Grizzlies secured their fifth win of the season.
Ten days later, facing the Mavericks again, this time he had to guard Luka, averaging 34 points. No one expected him to complete the task, nor should he, but he did greatā€”the Grizzlies almost erased a 17-point deficit, forcing Luka to 4-of-12 shooting in the second half. They even exchanged trash talk during the game, but after the game, Luka said:
"I think heā€™s a great defender."
When Luka Doncic calls you a "great" defender, you must be a "very, very, very great" defender.
https://preview.redd.it/6jn2grnbmd1d1.png?width=1919&format=png&auto=webp&s=566c59c5549e34a61c450230a88500215b38de49
Vince started the next game. Although he had some ups and downs briefly after Morantā€™s return, he quickly adjusted. He scored 19+9 against the Sunsā€™ big three, limiting Durant; next time facing Luka, he won again (Luka 9-of-21); he scored 24+7 against the Warriors, winning, and in the win over the Heat, he outperformed Butler (25 points, JB 15 points).
Just as we were marveling at his offensive and defensive performances, his pre-All-Star break streak showed us even more potential.
Starting from February 8 against the Bulls, he averaged 14+7+8+2 steals over five consecutive games, including an 18+12+7 performance against Lillard/Giannisā€™ Bucks. He limited Lillard to 7-of-21 shooting and helped disrupt Lillardā€™s three-point attempt in the final moments.
What, Vince can also moonlight as a point guard?
The Grizzlies converted his contract in January to a three-year, $7.9 million deal with an option. Considering his versatility and level of play, this contract is so low itā€™s almost insulting. But if you think thatā€™s exaggerated, wait, thereā€™s more.
https://preview.redd.it/wjpaxgqcmd1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=0352543f4be22abad934a7d796e6968d91e40156
ā€”ā€”When GG Jackson was drafted, few Grizzlies fans who knew about him were optimistic. Their reasons were solid: GG wasnā€™t even 19 when drafted, too young; he skipped a grade to play a dismal season at South Carolina, shooting 38%, looking like a chucker; he had publicly criticized teammates, posing a locker room cancer risk.
These might be true, but I only learned about him after he was draftedā€”watching him tearfully talk to ZK on a call, watching his college highlight reels showcasing his versatile offensive skills and confidence, his enviable physique, these on-court aspects captivated me. I followed his performance throughout Summer League, and his smooth catch-and-shoot and diligent defensive footwork made me even more optimistic about his future.
At the time, I was probably the only one publicly praising him. I voiced my support in every platform I hadā€”podcasts, Weibo, even the comment section of the pay raise public account: Check out GG! He has a chance to enter the rotation!
For the first half of the season, he barely played, putting up numbers in the G League. On January 13, 2024, with Nemo, Bane, and Smart all out, TJ had no choice but to put GG into the rotation, giving him 27 minutes.
In his first effective NBA game, GG scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting; the next game against the Warriors, 23 points. He became the second-youngest in history to score 20+ in consecutive games, only behind Bronā€”TNTā€™s crew warmly greeted him on national television:
Shaq: "I have nothing to say; I just want to congratulate you: now people know who you are."
https://preview.redd.it/a22gjp4emd1d1.png?width=2248&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a59bc946a230ddb2108716ff9253ecc05c6592f
GG looked both excited and nervous, reminding me of my freshman year. This is the genuine reaction of a kid this age when theyā€™ve done something remarkable and are publicly praised for it.
This wasnā€™t the last time. With Vince injured, GG became my sole motivation to watch the last third of the season. In 42 effective games, he averaged 16.4 points and 4.5 rebounds, hitting 36% of his shots, averaging 2.4 three-pointers per game. He scored 20+ in 12 games, 30+ in three, and posted 44+12 against a full-strength Nuggets in the final game.
If GG had entered the rotation earlier, could he have made the All-Rookie First Team? Quite possibly, as heā€™s a natural scorer who excels in big moments and national broadcasts (how rare is this for the youngest player in the league?). His other contributions in games were limited, but considering the Grizzliesā€™ environment, their league-worst offense, the pressure he faced, and the difficulty of his scoring might have been greatly underestimated.
GG dropped 31 points against a full-strength Lakers, almost the only player able to initiate scoring, making a top-five play dunk over Rui Hachimura. How many All-Rookie votes will he get?
https://preview.redd.it/7obss9rfmd1d1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=dbe5d862cf5b5ca1ace44b70eabd533933563b5d
Two experts stood with me: ESPNā€™s Bobby Marks placed GG in his All-Rookie Second Team a week ago, and The Ringerā€™s Bill Simmons said he would vote GG for Rookie of the Year in a podcast two days ago. Regardless, GG has earned respect.
And for Grizzlies fans, even better news is that the team converted his contract to a four-year, $8.5 million deal with a fourth-year team option in February. As a Reddit Grizzlies fan put it, "This is Pippen contract level theft."
Vince and GG, two second-round picks, played convincingly in ways no one expected. The Grizzlies have locked them in on affordable long-term contracts for at least three years, and they will undoubtedly be key rotation or even starting players for the Grizzlies next seasonā€”what did the Grizzlies trade to acquire them? Zero.

Praying to the Basketball Gods

Though Grizzlies fans' moods might be 1,000 times better than three months ago, this remains a completely wasted season. For a young team that matched up against the champions two years ago, this isnā€™t good. The Grizzlies still have plenty of draft picks, but their salary cap is tight. Their core 3 is still young and talented, but two other young core teamsā€”at least the Timberwolves and Thunderā€”are ready. The Grizzlies are nowhere near their position two years ago.
But this "wasted" season allowed them to eliminate many wrong options and secure several key players. Even if the offseason only brings an average starting center, their roster strength is very, very solid (I donā€™t think any current team could consistently beat a healthy 2024 Grizzlies). They maintained high defensive levels, forced turnovers, and blocks with many non-NBA players, and they possess better three-point shooting than the past two years. They can replicate the 2022 season's performance, and thatā€™s a conservative estimate.
https://preview.redd.it/xxiop63hmd1d1.png?width=1440&format=png&auto=webp&s=951528875c8ab351023e1f588ad3837f4c0d6661
But can they stay healthy? In 2022, Dillon played only 32 games and was out of sorts in the playoffs, with Morant also injured midway; in 2023, key players were in and out, losing inside reserves to the Lakers in a seven-game upset; this year, the entire team suffered the worst injury wave in NBA history. Like the Clippers in recent years, injuries are the easiest topic to discuss without being wrong because no one can control them, and they always happen.
So, I can only pray to the basketball gods: it canā€™t get worse than this. I desperately want to see a fully healthy Morant-Bane-Jaren Grizzlies team play a playoff series, even if they are easily beaten by a better team. I donā€™t want to look back years later and be left with a pile of "what ifs."

I'm from Philippines. I'm extremely anxious these past few days and I don't know how to calm down. I know I shouldn't worry about this but I really can't help it. Aside from pregnancy test and ultrasound, what tests can I get to confirm if I'm pregnant or not?

2024.05.19 14:37 christof21 Incredibly poor speeds via Opal

I just bought an Opal to test with at home before going abroad and the WiFi speeds via it are so poor Iā€™m wondering if itā€™s even worth taking anywhere.
Iā€™ve got the SFT1200 on the most up to date firmware.
Iā€™m on a 260/50 connection and via my Dream Router Iā€™ve get 240/50 over WiFi.
It doesnā€™t matter if the SFT1200 is wired to the router or in repeater mode I barely get above 9mbps down.
Is there something wrong with the unit or is that the capability of it?

2024.05.19 14:36 Trondtran Peak Design travel backpack 30l first impressions

TLDR: This are my first impressions of the Peak Design backpack 30l, chosen for its dual use as a camera and travel bag. I sought a modular solution after using the Thule DSLR backpack 32l. Positive aspects include a sleek design, modular packing, easy-sliding zippers, comfort with 7-8 kg weight, and good capacity with compression zippers. Negatives are the dangling zipper pull, uncertainty about zipper appearance in its uncompress state and sternum straps' effectiveness, the bag's height, and a weak bottom magnetic pocket. I will further explore the top access pocket and internal mesh pockets, which have been criticized for being too small and camera-centric.
If you have any questions or things you want me to check out, please leave a comment. Also: I am not affiliated with Peak Design. I just want to give back to this community I have learned so much from since I stumbled in here six years ago.
Why did I get it?
As many have pointed out on this sub, this backpack is quite heavy, tall and expensive. If that is a dealbreaker for you, then this backpack is probably not for you.
But who is it for, and why did I choose this?
I came from the Thule DSRL backpack 32l, a bag I felt it had too many compartments and pockets and were too tall when packing the rolltop out. It was a nice and sturdy backpack, but the side access did not work very well when sliding the back to the side in order to get your camera out. I sold The Thule DSRL backpack 32l and my Thule Subterra 40L and got the peak design 30l. I wanted a dedicated cameraback, that also could be used as a travel backpack only, that also could be used wi hybrid mode with the small camera cube.
That beeing said, getting a cameracube for your current backpack could be more than enough if you plan to only bring a camera every now and then, and a lot cheaper than getting a peak design bag. I see my purchase as an investment for prossional work, traveling. I am recently doing more traveling at conferences and meetings for work that requires a more sleek looking backpack.
So all in all this versitily and ecosystem seemed like a good fit for traveling, and for film and photagraƄhy gigs as a dedicated camerabag as well as fitting into more formal settings.
What I think this bag gets a bit to much critisism for compared to the 45l is the lack of side access zippers. The large zippers easily slides to the sides witch can double as side access pockets if you pack your bag strategically. I like this now, but it will be interesting to see if it will feel cumbersome in the long term.
I think the criticism of the shoulder straps are individual and something you would have to try out your self. When I packed it up to a total weight of 8kg (7.3kg plus a 0.7 desiliter water bottle) and did a 11 km test walk, it never felt heavy on the shoulders with the sternum straps attached. Some of the pressure from the weight also distributes into the back, giving a three point pressure on the chest, shoulders and the back. But the straps are thin though, and I wish they would have made them a bit wider like on my subterra 34 that is equally thin, but wider.
What I like so far:
What I dislike
What I will further explore in order to make an informed opinion.
These pockets have been criticized for being too small, too camera gear centric, and unaccessible. I will try find a use case for them over the course of the next weeks and months and get some real world experience using them.
I do not think a hibbelt is a necessity for all users, but for camera gigs with longer walks I will need it.

2024.05.19 14:36 Praxius To the Trap Camp Owner, there's a difference between Street Thug & Super Villain.

I can see a trap camp a mile away, and think of them as a challenge. Today, not only was I able to bypass a trap camp by using a workbench through a window, but I thought I'd test the obvious trap using light footed & got me through without dying too. before I bought anything to show I was there and got through, I saw they had a shelter.
I proceeded to turn off every single light source they had at their camp and then went inside their shelter to do the exact same thing and turn everything off.
Fun Fact: Once you're inside a shelter, the owner can't kick you out. If they store or delete the shelter entrance, you remain inside. If they swap camps, you remain inside. They have to log out to kick you out.
3 shelters later, I went back to the vendors and bought an interesting legendary for 35k. They quickly swapped camps or swapped servers. So maybe I did blow 35k of caps on one item and they only made 6000 caps & capped out. It could always be worse. Oh wait, that's right. It is worse.
When they return to their camp, they have to manually turn every single light back on. There's no way around it other than scrapping/building again, which seems a bit extreme and would take ever so slightly longer to do.
šŸ–ļøšŸ¤ŖšŸ¤š But wait! There's more! Every light in every shelter has to be turned back on, one by one. Swapping camps ain't gonna fix that since they all share the same shelters. Jumping servers doesn't reset the lights back on either.
And if I'm ever so slightly bored in the future and see the user name again on another server, and the camp is the same trap camp, then I'll just merely run a silo and swipe a card... Then wait.
Wait for a Public Event. Radiation Rumble would be most preferred. Something in an instanced location, where a player would be knowingly safe from a nuke. Wait for them to join the event and then wait a couple of more minutes for the event to be truly underway & they're a little occupied. Knowing you yourself can't be Nuked and with your hands full, one assumes it's one of the three bosses and don't check..... Launch.
9 times out of 10, that's a camp strike and a repair. With any luck, they only lit their camp back up between now and then, but maybe they still get to discover the shelters are still out after the repair. šŸ’€ (Skeletor Laughs) Neh'Eh'ah'ah'ah'a'a'aaaaaa.
Now, I imagine some of you by now are thinking, "This is ever so petty." It sure is. But I'm also not the one out there trying to kill other players to take some petty junk. Or worse: selling flux, someone buys the flux, they're killed by the owner that just took their caps & now just took their flux to pop back into their vendor and resell to the next sucker.
šŸ¤” Do you really care if someone is petty to someone like that? Yeah, poor them. And maybe it's a waste of time. It is indeed. But it's also my time to waste, isn't it? If I'm waiting for the next interesting thing to do, I gotta make something interesting in the meantime.
šŸ¤Ø At least Dr Zorbo would approve.

2024.05.19 14:35 Kunal_Sen How to Buy Your First Car (according to MotorInc)

MotorInc is an automotive YouTube channel featuring the enthusiasts Karthikeya and Shumi that has grown on me slowly. I particularly like their talkathons. Of which, on the latest one today, they discussed a topic that I thought might be relevant to many forum members here. It's titled:
How to Buy Your First Ever Car
The video entails the following main facets:
  1. Knowing Your Budget (and the benefits of stretching a bit in order to leave "headroom" to grow with the car)
  2. The Case for Petrol as Default for Most Use Cases
  3. Not being blinded by spec sheets, using vlogs only to narrow choices and test-driving before final selection
  4. Three Good Car Essentials or Hygiene Factors (Responsive Engine, Balanced Suspension with Control first priority and Comfort Second, and Well-Engineered Nature)
  5. The Features Question and the VFMness of the Mid-Variant (incl. debate on the usefulness of ADAS) and the need to have optional-feature variants and exploring the possibilty of fitting a car with after-market accessories.
  6. The Safety Conversation (difference between active and passive safety and need to stop putting all the onus on rating agencies, valuing features like rear washer and ESP over toted features like a high number of airbags)
  7. Personal Experiences
I don't agree with their after-market installations advise, but other than that, the video made a lot of sense. What do the others think?

2024.05.19 14:32 mcubed1220 Multiple Nest and Speakers responding to commands

We have been enjoying oru Google Home setup for over a year andhave had not problems. Yesterday multiple displays and speakers began replying to questions/commands. In the bedroom, when I say "Hey Google, what is the temperature?" the display in the bedroom, speaker in the kitchen, my Pixel phone and the speaker in the kitchen would all respond.
This is new behavior which leads me to think that it is not a sensitivity issue or placement issue. I haven't made any changes to the setup we have been using. So is it a setting issue? A glitch? An unpredicatable result of something Gogle has done on their end?
Most importantly, how do I get it back so only the closest device would respond?

2024.05.19 14:32 Mimii483 Flying with a kitten HELP :)

Hello there! I don't know if anyone can help me clarify a few things, if anyone did this kind of thing before. So I'm in Egypt and while I've been here I adopted a kitten that was lost on the street, a literal new born. I wanted to take it home to Portugal with me and I searched all the things needed: chip, rabies vaccinations, the pet not being younger than 3 months... That's the thing, he is around 3 months old right now. And everywhere on the web tells me I need to put a chip on him before the vaccination, and then the vaccination at least 21 days before the trip (my trip is on June 4), and then a blood test at least 3 months PRIOR the trip and 30 days after the vaccination... This is for travelling from NON-EU to EU. I mean, if he is 3 months old that's not even possible. Is there any way to counter this? :( I tried contacting the agency but they give me this same info they don't know what else I can do. I just find it weird it says the pet should be at least 3 months old but then they ask for a blood test 3 months prior the trip and 30 days after vaccination? I would appreciate any insight on this as I really don't want to leave him here... Thanks!

2024.05.19 14:32 throwaway461455 Job hunting advice needed

Hi all,
Throw away account here. Iā€™m currently an ophthalmology fellow finishing up fellowship in FL and have been job hunting for the past 6 months.
Originally I had a job offer that I signed in FL 4 weeks ago that was supposed to be a done deal, but they are now playing games with me and are trying to renege on the starting salary because I am a new grad.
To provide context, the starting salary theyā€™re offering is $325k and I negotiated to $335k. The practice owner has not made it clear what he wants to bring it down to but he says he canā€™t make the originally negotiated $335k work.
To make things more complicated, my significant other is also an ophthalmologist one year ahead of me who took a job here in FL while I complete fellowship. The past several months of job hunting in FL have been disappointing as all the job offers pay below market rate and all the practice owners have an expectation of the new associate buying the practice of the future. Me and my significant other are from the north east and we eventually would like to go back. Her contract that she signed is for two years, and without penalty. Since I have to look for jobs in her area, the opportunities have been limited as I mentioned above.
Given the not that great opportunities around here so far, I actually have started to look at jobs back where I am from in the north east. I am in talks with another practice closer to home, that pays 40% more post tax. It is private equity owned. Once I brought this up with my significant other, they got very mad and argumentative that I am selfish, and that I do not recognize the sacrifice that they made. I remember when I matched in fellowship last year, I even told them that they can choose whatever other they prefer whether that is their sibling or their family member as I complete training. They made their own decision to come down with me.
I guess I want to see what is the sub redditā€™s opinion in terms of what I should do
I understand I am a new grad, and it seems that I cannot command much in terms of negotiating power. However, even just looking at one job back where Iā€™m from, Iā€™m able to command more compensation as opposed to schlepping it down here in Florida
AITA for wanting to look for jobs back home? Should I take the FL job just for a year or 2 to build experience? The only lead I have is that job that I mentioned before in the NE so I havenā€™t even looked really hard for other positions back home.
Iā€™m not a big fan of being The only lead I have is that job that I mentioned before in the NE so I havenā€™t even looked really hard for other positions back home. being down here and neither is my SO, but she doesnā€™t want to leave earlier than her contract. If I didnā€™t have her around, honestly I would just go back to the NE and not deal with the shadiness Iā€™ve been experiencing here in FL.
The biggest arguing point that we have been having lately is that she feels that she sacrificed for me, and Iā€™m not willing to do the same by taking a job down here. My big issue has been this owner has been jerking my chain for the past month. Idk what to do as my SO says I should just suck it up down here vs just leaving her here and meeting up again in the NE. We have tried to compromise but she has been uncooperative saying that since she sacrificed for me by being here (when she doesnā€™t want to be) that I need to do the same. Please advise

2024.05.19 14:31 Appr0priateCopyCat The positive effect of the 2020 pandemic in my life.

I used to hate being alone in public because I feel like I would be stared at and feel stupid all by myself.
But then, the pandemic happened with all the rules of social distancing and limiting the times going in public to run errands. Then that work from home thing where I can finish and submit projects on time, but I didn't do it on working hours. My body clock was ruined, but I was happier. I never knew that I was more productive on wee hours rather than the regular 8-hour work during the daytime. I became more confident dealing matters with people as I learned to simply be direct to what is intended than mix socializing and talk nonsense. Going in an office goes like 1. greet, 2. say your peace, 3. listen for the response. If all is well, then politely leave. The pandemic made my life so simple. Only my pets get dramatic and comedic now. I love life more than ever. I am no longer forced to stay with a group of people and talk about unnecessary things like the life of Evelyn Hugo and her seven husbands. šŸ˜†
