2024.05.19 13:56 Stock_Astronomer_727 NTU psych vs NUS psych + management

Hello! Like many others i too am having a dilemma on which uni offer to accept. In NTU, i got offered psychology with the NTU-USP (university scholars programme) scholarship while in NUS, i got offered a psych with management double major (with psych as my primary major under CHS) with the NUS merit scholarship. For context, i'm hoping to have a more vibrant uni life than jc so overseas exposure, student life and the culture of the schools r important to me too!!
For the NUS merit scholarship, my benefits include: - Paid tuition fees - S$6,000 annual living allowance - S$2,000 one-time computer allowance - Guaranteed Student Exchange Programme (SEP) placement with one of NUS overseas partner universities for one semester (no priority given so may not be one of my top choices i'm assuming??)
For the NTU-USP scholarship, my benefits include: - Paid tuition fees - S$6,500 annual living allowance - S$1,750 one-time computer allowance - Annual accommodation allowance of up to S$2,000 - Travel Grant of up to $5000 for an overseas study/attachment programme -Overseas benefits: - Heavily subsidized Travel Overseas Programme for Scholars (TOPS) in the freshman year (1 week overseas fieldwork and research trip) - NTU-USP Study Abroad Programme, or - Priority placement in overseas universities through NTU's international student semester exchange

Some of my concerns right now are: - i'm not yet sure if i fully wanna commit to a career in psych even though its something i'm passionate abt (will have to do master's at least, if not phd) so the double major in NUS might give me more opportunities to pursue smth else if i decide that psych is not for me + NUS CHS gives me the flexibility to change my major within the first 2 years

I've heard from seniors and profs that the psych mods have a steep bellcurve too and that its generally a competitive course in either uni so i guess i'll have to grind either way😭 it feels like i might have a more vibrant student life in NTU(?) while the culture in NUS seems more academically-driven, but FASS/CHS seniors, feel free to correct me! Also how r the campuses for the FASS block in NUS and the SSS block in NTU HAHAH i didnt get a chance to see them up close! Just hoping anyone can share any insights abt the respective unis and programmes and shed some light into my dilemma ^
if u've made it this far, thank u for taking the time to read this post!! i'll just list some of the pros and cons of each uni below for easier reference but its basically just a summary of everything i've said above :D

NUS:
Pros✅️ - flexibility to change my 1st and 2nd major within the first 2 years - psychology + management double major - guaranteed semester exchange programme (SEP) - no need to stay in hall, can travel from the comfort of my new house - i prefer its S/U system and bidding system - brand name and prestige could give me more overseas opportunities to pursue my master's
Cons❌️ - CHS common curriculum takes up 1/3 of my degree, less time to study my majors - fewer overseas opportunities compared to NTU-USP, guaranteed exchange programme may not be one of my top choices bcs its more competitive - have to study CHS common curriculum (which i'm not super interested in compared to my major) in lecture-tutorial style, which takes more effort for me from past jc experience
NTU:
Pros✅️ - more overseas experiences and opportunities (TOPS, priority for exchange programmes, USP study abroad, electives with overseas fieldwork components, etc) - small class sizes for USP modules which facilitates better learning for me personally! + provides a sense of community too - fewer modules for the common curriculum so more time to focus on my major - the hall experience could add to my uni experience esp in terms of student life + i have 4 years guaranteed hall + $2000 annual accommodation allowance
Cons❌️ - i dont really like the S/U system and dont prefer its bidding system (but have learnt some ways to work around the bidding system from seniors) - have to stay in hall away from the comforts of my own home + have to pay for hall - little flexibility to change my major once i enter uni + no double major with business (career backup if i give up on psych) - less prestige compared to NUS(?) not as much of a brand name
Okay thats about it!! Pls share your advice and opinions guys i have 5 days left to make a decision and i'm starting to panic a little😭😭 anyway thank you for reading my post and for any pieces of advice/comments yall leave!!

The Rise of E-Sports: How Competitive Gaming is Changing Entertainment

ESPORT
The word “e-sports,” which stands for electronic sports, means digital gaming where at least two teams or individual players compete with each other in already selected games. This movement originally started as a hobby of a small group has now expanded into the world of global industry, which is now also having enormous effects on the culture and economy. Here’s an explanation of how competitive gaming is changing the entertainment landscape:Here’s an explanation of how competitive gaming is changing the entertainment landscape:
  1. The real significance of YouTube and music today goes far beyond the initial status of music videos. In fact, the shift in how young people consume and form relationships with music could be described as a phenomenon that radically changed their world.
The acceptance of e-sports has been to the world’s mainstream that currently attracts many viewers internationally. These days, major e-sport events like The International and the League of Legends World Championship are aired on sports networks like ESPN and live streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube, with viewerships same big as traditional sports. This visibility has made competitive gaming (eSports) an accepted adversity which has integrated eSport into popular culture.
  1. Professionalization of Gaming
The development of electronic sports(E-sports), consequently, has brought about the professionalism of gaming. With the option to become professional gamers and earning real money by means of online tournaments winnings, sponsorships, and streaming revenues, players are nowadays choosing gaming as a professional job. Teams like these operate in the same way as teams in traditional sports, and are supported by trainers, analysts and other staff.
  1. Policy and Environment Effect on Economy and Industry Output
The e-sports sector is witnessing a tremendous economic level of development, which according to reports will snowball to millions and billions of dollars. These channels are revenue generating with the money coming from advertising, sponsorships, media rights, merchandise sales, and ticket sales live events. The sector has led to expansion that has also created jobs across different sectors such as event management, marketing, and game developers.
  1. Technological Advances and Innovations:
The e-sport steadfastness has given room for tech developments and growth in gadgets and broadcasting. It is the way that streaming technology, VR and AR materials make progress that e-sports’ demands, partly incite them. The innovations being introduced here not only help make the games interesting but also make watching more exciting for the audiences
  1. Cultural and Social Impacts
E-sport has a huge cultural and social influence. Leading to the establishment of a community among players and fans, it gives rise to a common platform where social interaction and collaboration are possible. The e-sports inclusiveness, which has no boundaries of age or background, leads to diversity in the gaming community. In addition, e-sports has affected other entertainment forms, including movies, television shows, and music, which has resulted in a cross-pollination of gamers’ culture into mainstream entertainment.
  1. Educational and Development Resources
The educational and developmental values of e-sports are no longer being overlooked by many stakeholders. Some schools provide e-sports programs and scholarships in order to underline its potential to grow abilities like teamwork, strategic thinking, and digital literacy. Furthermore, e-sports can be a way that people enter into careers in technology, game design, and related fields.
  1. Difficulties and Prospects for the future
Whereas e-sports has witnessed steady increase, its growth is hinged on issues of player health and well-being, diversity, and unpredictability of game popularity. Nevertheless, the future perspective for e-sports is exciting where it can be combined with traditional sports, increased the global presence and upgraded with technologies.
Conclusion
The growth of e-sports shows a remarkable change in the entertainment business. It combines the fun of competition with the interactivity of video games, thus, resulting in a unique and exciting experience for the players as well as viewers. As e-sports is evolving, it probably will leave a permanent mark on what entertainment is being created, consumed, and experienced around the world.

2024.05.19 11:54 elitemihi Seeking Advice on Finding a Job in Shanghai: EU Citizen with CS Background

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some realistic advice and insights on my current job search situation in Shanghai. Here’s a bit about my background and what I’m facing:
My Background:
Visa Situation:
Job Search Efforts:
Challenges:
Current Plan:
My Question:
I'm currently in a bind. With my background and qualifications, finding a good programming job in Europe wouldn't be too difficult. However, in Shanghai, it's been so challenging to find any job, even those I'm grossly overqualified for, no matter how much I lower my standards regarding career progression and compensation. Although I could find a remote job, that wouldn't solve my visa issue.
Given my qualifications and experience, what are the realistic chances of finding any job in Shanghai that provides a livable wage and normal work hours? Any advice on navigating the job market or improving my odds would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone been in a similar situation or have insights on making this work?
Thank you!

2024.05.19 10:13 AutoModerator Application Results Megathread 2024

It's that time of the year where applications are beginning to close and everyone anxiously waits for their results. To reduce subreddit clutter, a master post has been created for everyone to discuss the results and ask questions. Last year's thread had live chat enabled, but this feature has since been removed from Reddit. To compensate, this post is set to automatically filter by the newest comment first, so please use it like a live chat and discuss with your fellow applicants as much as you please.
WARNING: Any posts about application results will be deleted and rerouted to this thread.

FAQ

Q. When are results released?
A. Results are usually released a month or so after the official application closing date. Sometimes it may take longer if you are applying to a larger consulate.
Q. How will I get my results?
A. Results are usually delivered through email. Some consulates may offer it through other means, but check your emails.
Q. I missed something in my application/forgot something/want to change something but the application is closed, could this affect my results?
A. Once the window for applications is closed, no changes can be made unless in a unique situation. This is a case by case basis and must be asked directly to your consulate or embassy. Whether or not this will effect your results is unknown, but the general thought process should be no effect if its legitimate.
Q. Will I get my documents back?
A. No.
Q. I applied through my university, when will I get my results?
A. University admissions are different than embassy. You would need to contact the university you applied to.
Q. I didn't get the interview, now what?
A. If you didn't get invited to the interview, don't worry. There's many other avenues and paths to higher education in Japan. The MEXT scholarship, in particular, has the University recommended route. This method of applying is completely different from the Embassy recommendation and specific to each school. Search up MEXT Scholarship + School's Name to find out how and where to apply.
JASSO, the Japan Student Services Organization, also offers a range of scholarships for foreign students. Refer to the Study in Japan website for other scholarship opportunities. Many large companies and banks have scholarship opportunities as well for specific fields, especially in STEM.

2024.05.19 10:09 MixEnvironmental3139 Help, Need to start making Money ASAP

I know easy money is non existent, I have my own circumstances, I want to start making money no matter how small of an amount it is
This is a new account since I do not want to be identified.
Situation context: Father passed away a couple of years ago, Mother is homemaker, Paternal Grandfather pays for living (me, mother, younger brother) but not sure for how long, he is doing it as an obligation for taking care of him. All my cousins are treated differently and live a life of luxury without ever the worry about the future (I don't give a shit).
Education: Although I have been told countless times that I'm worthless, despite all the discouragement, I'm an NTSE scholar and an undergraduate at IIT (currently finished 2nd Year). My education was seen as burden whereas all my cousins are paid lakhs of rupees in college fee. Yes my cousins fees and many of my uncles and aunts (paternal) finances are assured by my grandfather, because they feel it is unfair that I am living off of his money.
People I'm sorry if this sub is not meant for this type of shit.
Please, I don't want any handouts or financial help. (Beats the point of everything this post was meant for)
I would love to make any sort of money. I could use some of my scholarship money, but I would most prefer to start from scratch as if I have nothing on my hands.
Edit1: post flair added, typo

2024.05.19 08:54 ShulianOran Is possibly going into debt worth quality education?

Hello everyone!
I am a 23 year old that graduated about a year ago in Amman , Jordan with a degree of Business Economics, I also have around a year of combined experience. I want to pursue my Master's later this year. Here are the options:
The situation is as follows:
I have been accepted in the Economics program at University of Lisbon at have paid around 1500 EUROS already, and currently awaiting visa acceptance/rejection. Whilst in the middle of applying for the visa, I have been notified that I have also been accepted in the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship.
This scholarship covers all university fees and provides an allowance of 200 EURO/month, on top of the fact that Budapest is cheaper than Lisbon in general.
My question is:
What do I do? I would prefer attending the University of Lisbon, However it is out of my own pocket, and living expense are high (granted I can afford it, but barely, might even take a loan). Or is it wise just to take the scholarship even though it is vastly inferior education - according to rankings-.
P.S: I plan to pursue a PHD afterwards. My career path is either Academia or Public Policy.
Thank you!!

2024.05.19 08:33 Tubelight1710 BC or NEU's for Master's in Quantitative Finance (STEM)?

Hello everyone!
I need some advice on deciding between two options for my Master's in Finance program. I’ve been accepted into both Boston College's Carroll School of Management and Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business but I’m having trouble deciding which offer to accept. Here are some details to consider:
Scholarships: Both universities have offered me scholarships. NEU's scholarship covers 25% of my tuition fee. BC does not mention the exact amount of scholarship but could be b/w 5K - 10K with the Dean's scholarship.
Tution cost: total $54K but would cost around $39K with scholarship at NEU. Tuition cost is approx $66K at BC.
BC has also awarded a graduate assistantship with an annual stipend of $6,840. NEU has co-op programs but didn't consider me for any GAs.
Both programs are highly regarded, but I’d love to hear about your experiences or knowledge regarding the quality of education, faculty, networking opportunities, and career services.
Have a great weekend! Thanks!

2024.05.19 04:59 Different-Seaweed499 Should I take the student loans?

Hello redditors, I have an opinion question to ask.
I just graduated from college, and was accepted to NYU for graduate school in the fall. Only about 50% of students get scholarships, and I received a 50% tuition scholarship from them to attend. The program would put me exactly in the job field that I want to pursue life long, and I genuinely find joy in the idea of pursuing said career (Public Policy Analyst). My career goal requires education beyond just my bachelor’s degree, and I genuinely love school and am excited about continuing going to classes. I’ve met some great people who will also be in my program that I am excited to see there. I also plan to live in NYC for many years to come, and have not found a single other place in the world where I feel like my most authentic self. The program is one of the best in the country, and has faculty who have worked on Capitol Hill and other amazing organizations. The program will be superrrrr good for my chosen field and unlock many connections lifelong. I truly feel like I have the key to my perfect future in my hand with this opportunity.
All of this sounds great, right? Well… as you can imagine I would be taking out an exorbitant amount of student loans for this Master’s program. Even with the 50% tuition, the cost for 2 years of the tuition is a little over $100k total (I have no idea how people pay that without scholarships!!!) Thankfully, my undergraduate tuition was completely paid for through a scholarship that I earned, so I don’t have a lot of student loans besides my living expenses from that time. This allows some leeway for grad school expenses, however, I would be looking at around $100-120k in loans at the end of all of this…
Thankfully, my career field will most likely fall under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness track, so I believe that I will be eligible to get these loans paid for. It is not a 100% guarantee though. My career field makes somewhat decent money, but if these loans don’t get forgiven, I’m looking at a cool 20+ years paying off these loans.
Given the overwhelmingly large amount of net positives of this program, I am thinking of just going for it and taking on the loans. At the same time I am not sure how wise this is given the number and uncertainty in the loan forgiveness. I know that as an adult I need to make this decision and I am the one who will need to pay these off eventually. However, I was hoping to get some input from strangers with zero stake in my life who will give me the straight up facts (the lovely people close to me in my life of course said to follow my heart and go for it, but I am sure that they just don’t want to hurt my feelings). So please, if you feel so inclined redditors, give me your input!

2024.05.19 04:42 Necessary_Neck1181 National Merit 2023 PSAT

So I have a question about national merit scholarships for the PSAT and any answer I would be grateful for. So basically, I took the 2023 PSAT and I qualified for the National Merit Scholarship. But I don’t know what it means.. what am I supposed to do now? Am I supposed to apply to something, and if so, when is the deadline? I’m a bit worried because the deadline may have passed already, or it is coming up soon and I don’t know about it. If someone could educate me on this I’d be really thankful. Thanks!

2024.05.19 04:39 tiyelobb01 ABYG if binlock ko yung pinsan ko sa messenger ng nanay ko?

Hello, I'm 27F. My mom has always been so generous to other people. Kahit walang wala na siya, she's still gives out a hand. Hindi kami mayaman. Growing up, I've been applying and receiving educational assistance from the government and granted scholarships kaya ako nakapagaral sa private school until college which gave a wrong impression sa family ng isang kapatid ng papa ko. After I graduated college last year, I landed a job right away and dito na nagstart mangulit yung pinsan ko mangutang ng mangutang sa nanay ko. Mind you, we didn't grew up together and I can't remember kung nagkita na ba kami or nameet ko na sila. Di kami close, in short.
Nangungutang si ate girl sa nanay ko. How did I know? I can access my mom's messenger account kasi ako gumawa. Nagmessage din sakin pinsan ko pero sineen ko lang. Yung ate niya kasi may utang pa sakin pero di ko na siningil kasi she's sick rn, like sick sick. I didn't mind at first na pinapautang sila ng mama ko kasi during that time, 500 pesos lang naman hinihingi and for the meds daw ng anak nila. Until, mom asked me if I can send half of her allowance to my pinsan kasi kesyo yung ate niya manganganak na daw. When I started working, I promised to give my mom to give her allowance monthly to help with bills and expenses at home and for herself na rin kung ano man gusto niyang bilhin. Nainis ako sa mama ko kasi malaking halaga yung ibibigay niya pero sabi niya ibabalik naman daw. Sabi ko, fine. Kapag binayaran ka, sayo na mismo idirekta or ipadala kasi nga allowance mo naman yan.
I was so busy for a couple of months and finally I decided to go home with my family. I'm working in Makati so I'm renting near my workplace. Ayan na, nakauwi na ako sa bahay. I was super hungry so I looked for some snack sa ref and to my surprise, walang laman. I, then asked my mom bakit walang stocks, kakabigay ko lang sa kanya last time.
A few weeks later, my mom went to Cebu to have a short vacation with her college besties. It's a 3-day vacation. Simula nung natuto si mama magfacebook, hala sigi magpost ng nagpost but I find it cute kasi she's sharing her moments lang naman. So, she's in Cebu with her college besties and she's been posting about it. Out of curiousity, I opened my mom's messenger. I saw my mom's convo with my pinsan filled with "tita!", "tita, napadala niyo na po?", "anong oras niyo po ipapadala?", "tita, tita, tita.." TITANG INA MO! HAHAHA naginit talaga ulo ko beshy! I told my mom to enjoy her vacation and not think of anything that would stress her out so hindi niya pinapansin yung chats ng pinsan ko. Siguro, aabot sa 20-30 chats per day si ate girl. Alam mo kung ano nanaman reason? Binugbog daw siya ng asawa niya. I can feel na she's making all things up. I messaged her on my personal messenger about this matter and I gave her an ultimatum to pay her utang to me. Ako ba yung gago if I blocked her on my mom's messenger? I'm giving everything to make my mom happy because she deserves it.

2024.05.19 01:53 International-Bus423 Qualifications in Australia? Want to homeschool niece & nephew if possible

Hi,
My niece & nephew are both autistic/ADHD and my sister would homeschool them if she could
As their aunt, I would like to be able to homeschool them. I believe in QLD/Aus it must be the actual parent or a registered teacher.
Are there any fellow Aussies who have done something similar?
I'm assuming most relatives who homeschool already have a teaching degree (eg. a grandparent who already has a career in education)
I'm currently studying a tertiary prep course via TAFE and want to go on to further study anyway. Is a bachelor degree in primary/secondary education the only option?
The aim is to be qualified as soon as possible, so that I could do the last couple of years of primary + highschool with them (they're 9 & 6 now).
Any advice or info is appreciated. Also any concerns 😅
Or recs for Aus specific homeschooling groups? I'll check out FB
(For context, neither parent is able to homeschool themselves, but would be at home to care for kids/offer general support. The kids also have support workers, OTs etc. I'm like a 3rd parent to them & understand their needs and how they best thrive/learn very well)
Thanks :)

2024.05.19 00:35 Ok-Coast-3526 Enlist first or Join SMP first

Hello, I am new to Army reserve, no one has served in force before in our family. My son currently senior in HS. Want to join SMP program. I need some guidance. He will be joining His college in January 2025 as spring admission. He contacted his Army reserve recuriter, he said since he has six months he can finish his BCT and AIT before January 2025 and go to college and Join ROTC . Apply for minuteman scholarship for 4 years. Here is my concern, Deployment in between RIT and start of ROTC. This will mess up his college education ( he is brilliant student, admitted in top tier university) 1. Can army reserve recruiter sign him up as SMP ? So before he finish his training, he is secured. 2. If he has to wait to sign up for ROTC ( contracted from freshman) , can he be deployed in between time where he is waiting to start college ( probably around month and half ) 3 . Should he NOT enlist at the moment and wait till start of college ?
So much confusion. If any one can guide
