TRIGGER: OCD Partner with sucidical thoughts had made me unsure how to live
2024.05.19 11:32 SubstanceIcy646 TRIGGER: OCD Partner with sucidical thoughts had made me unsure how to live
Throwaway account with some bits of personal info changed to make it less recognisable, and trigger warning suicidal themes.
Not really spoken to anyone about this so where better than with a bunch of random folk on the internet...
I (28m) live with my partner (29f) and in Jan of 2020 she began to develop germ-focused OCD, obviously, the pandemic and everyone being frightened of germs and personal spaces only fueled it from being something that was mildly affecting her life to making her clean herself and daily items like her phone or wallet like crazy when she came home.
Fast forward 4 years, 3 homes, and 2 cats later and she is at a point where her OCD has "evolved" and now is not only affected by germs but by meat (she's vegetarian) which has meant that I cannot eat any meat when around her as she thinks it has some sort of contaminant that makes people inherently dirty which I was fine with at first but then she is freaked out by our pets after they eat meat, clean themselves and then walk around the house which makes her clean the floors constantly or spray our sofa with disinfectant as that is where they like to sleep, and she won't let them come anywhere near her which is already tough on them as they don't understand what is going on.
After 4 years of having to change my life personally around her OCD and follow a lot of the same compulsions that she does to make sure she's happy and feels comfortable has started to weigh a lot more heavily on me, from having to do things like open doors in our own home as those are dirty to cooking and cleaning as utensils and cleaning stuff has become dirty, not seeing friends at their houses or outdoors as she "can't control" what they do and eat to having to change my diet to make sure I'm not eating contaminated food. For some context, I've been going through my own crap for the last year or so from my company letting all their staff go to losing my dad so it's not been easy and I can't get any help, support or even a hug from her as she's going through her own stuff (quite right as she's going through A LOT)
She knows that she is "making everyone around her miserable" and that has started pushing her to the edge and has begun talking about having suicidal thoughts when everything gets a bit much for her and how everyone would be better off without her, she knows how it will affect everyone around her but has said that she just doesn't see an end in sight and she doesn't see another way to "not feel like this anymore" She went through some therapy but they told her the harsh truth that the only person who can stop feeling this way is her, there isn't any magic pill or procedure that will make it go away, this scares her so much and she doesn't have the drive or capacity to take on even the tiniest aspect of exposure therapy or not cleaning things as it makes her want to peel off her own skin.
I'm just not emotionally together enough myself, I've started looking into therapy but I'm not a big believer in talking your problems away, it just ends up becoming a vent (ironic considering what I'm typing right now) but I'm almost at my wits end with it all, which in turn makes me feel worse as I know it's not necessarily her fault but I don't have anything else to point my frustration and pain towards about it as her OCD isn't a physical thing making her do these things, it's all in her head.
With me turning 30 soon I've been thinking a lot about my life and almost my whole 20s has been dictated by this condition that I don't even have, and we've spoken about having kids (Which I really want) but I just don't see that being possible anytime soon and my job involves traveling around the world a fair bit and sometimes think about just packing it all in to be there 24/7 as when I'm not around she scarcely functions meaning my whole life revolves around caring for her, and it's made me unsure how to live my own life going forward as none of it is how I planned or wanted and it seems to feel like just an extension of her life, like a tool.
Anywho, thanks for reading my little rant, feels like it was all over the place a bit but happy to clarify anything I've made unclear, I'll throw off my disguise and go back to my regularly scheduled redditing but just wanted to get the truth off my chest đ
Much love and stay safe xx

2024.05.19 11:01 MarkedMatt Answering popular questions related to the lore
Why didn't/couldn't Sidorovich, Barkeep and Sakharov recognize Strelok during SoC events? This might seem like a plothole, but it actually isn't. Sid didn't know Strelok personally:
"Yeah, I've heard of a stalker by that name. Rumors is he's one of the few who went to the center of the Zone and made it back.
Still, we got so many of these legendary stories about stalker heroes that I can't really guarantee anything. At any rate,
I've never dealt with him personally. It seems he has his own trading channels. Anyhow, just ask the folks here in the Zone and you'll be sure to learn a lot more." Clear Sky confirms that his words are true, because during CS events it was Fang who had a business with Sidorovich and not Strelok.
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/A4Pxgp.jpg https://snipboard.io/piHsac.jpg Barkeep's dialogue:
"An experienced stalker as far as I know. He used to "work" through the northern exits from the Zone.
He was hardly ever seen here but there are rumors that he took his group right into the center of the Zone."
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/Y4EmM2.jpg About Sakharov - There are plenty of possible explanations for the fact that he doesn't recognize Strelok, but the closest we have to an official explanation is included in the design
document of the original storyline of the prequel, where it's said that Strelok's face was bandaged at the time:
"
Strelok, whose face is still covered with bandages, comes to Sakharov and tells that he is planning a trip to the CNPP."
Of course, it's not really canon, but it still works.
Why won't military just bomb the Zone? First of all, they already tried but failed:
"I can't really get into that - we've got some discipline in this place, after all.
Our general Krylov certainly used to be a military man. I heard a few stories about how, just as the Zone formed, the government organized a military operation in here.
They were sent to the very center of the Zone with an order to blow it all to hell with nuclear explosives. Can you imagine what that means? These guys were sent with no protection, no detectors, no information about what to expect in the Zone. Many perished in anomalies right off, and most of those who didn't were done in by an emission. The few survivors were left behind to die a slow death.
General Krylov is one of those few. I don't know who he's pals with,
but he hates the military ever since he and his buddies were sent straight to their deaths. He's got some connections in Spetsnaz though. Spetsnaz only got real men. Sometimes Duty crosses paths with them. That's pretty much it - consider it the abridged version." - Dialogue of Zvyagintsev
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/HP1pVq.jpg Second of all, it's obviously a very bad idea.
"
Everyone who believes in the Monolith is completely nuts. They keep banging on about it but nobody actually knows what's in the center of the Zone. An invisible crystal that fell from the skies...ha-ha-ha! I reckon one of the secret labs blew up
- I mean some stalkers used to work in a few of them. But, obviously, you can't bomb the Zone. Not only will the radiation spread all over the world, half of Europe would be flattened by the Zone's reaction. "Someone" has gone totally mad lately - I heard they're killing normal stalkers for no reason at all. How do you like that? Damn fanatics." - Dialogue of Random 100 Rads Bar Dutyer
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/oWRgr0.jpg Is the Zone growing? Only SoC presents this idea. Neither Clear Sky nor Call of Pripyat mentioned anything about Zone's expansion. In fact, Hermann in CoP just said that Zone is evolving, while Loki directly said that it isn't getting bigger:
"They're idiots, that's what I think. I mean, why the hell would they want to destroy the Zone?
it's not consuming precious resources or getting bigger... or anything. They could just sit there and study it to their heart's content - just think of how many scientific discoveries could be made... I mean, in the history of man-kind, no one has never been able to understand antigravitation, right? And in the Zone you've got ready-made antigravitation devices lying all over the place. It wouldn't hurt to kick their asses out of here, but it's too much hassle. By the way, don't be confused by our relations here at Yanov. We are at war... it's just that Yanov has been made neutral territory, if you know what I mean." - Loki
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/UQ8ZEO.jpg If The Zone is practically known globally then how come we aren't seeing other world governments trying to send people of their own to study it? "
Right... I seem to remember you asking me about something last night, though I can't recall... Ah, got it. You wanted to know why it's only our eggheads messing around in the Zone. Curious why the foreigners won't show up, even though there's enough stuff here for thousands of Nobles prizes... Alright, let's see. First of all, what the heck do they need coming down here for, when they can simply pay some of our guys and get the results on a silver plate? Second of all, they've actually been there themselves, and quite a lot of them, too. It's just that in the last two years these gringos have been badly scared of going into the Zone..." - Fragment from PDA entry called "The chronicles of egghead globalists"
"Ever heard about Station Thirty-Two? That's where they all bit the bullet. It was all quiet at first, pretty much normal... They'd be reading their meters, taking samples, poking their gear into anomalies... And then they all started going nuts. Every friggin one of them. Everyone slowly going off their rocker. One of ours, the one that retired eventually, told me about it... Some actually ripped their own throats open, other would smash their heads against the wall, and some would simply... Gun in their mouth and... And then the beasts started swarming all over them. Those few who were still sane enough barricaded themselves in the house. You get the picture, right? Dark night, all the local beasties outside, and people going nuts one after another inside. In short, in the morning those who still had it together broke out of there somehow. Went straight on, even got caught in some anomalies... Got to the Rotten Forest... But none of those who had been left behind have been found. they say loads of controllers were recorded in that area. that's how it was...
Since then, no one goes anywhere near Station Thirty-Two, and the foreigners steer clear of the Zone... " - Another fragment from that entry
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/ZEXgNy.jpg (Part 1)
https://snipboard.io/gksjHB.jpg (Part 2)
https://snipboard.io/Zc8W2G.jpg (Part 3.)
"There are always developments in the Zone, and they're always interesting. I already told you about Monolith - they're on everybody's tongue...
Have you heard about a new major expedition into the Zone? Technically, they're environmental researchers from the UN, but that's just on paper. Sure, they got a couple four-eyed scientists, but just one look at all the others tells you they're seasoned fighters. No idea why they're here. Oh, and dig this: they're not using guides. Either they're being guided by satellite, or their mission is so secret that no one else could be let in on it. They seem to be approaching the Radar. I dunno how this will end, but I got a feeling it won't be pretty." - Dialogue of Hog
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/oejv2a.jpg What happened to Scar? There can be many answers to this question. Scar's fate could have turned out in many ways - perhaps, if the brainwashing process failed, he became simply zombified; if it was successful, he could've died while being transported in the death truck; if this didn't happen, he had a clearly defined task to perform, and could die while trying to do it; if he survived, he might still be wandering around the Zone as an amnesiac.
It's also possible that he simply died during the emission, or was captured but somehow managed to overcome the brainwashing process and escaped from whatever laboratory it was taking place in.
Monolith's weaponry. How do they have so many guns? It can be partially explained by a couple of things. First thing that should be noted is that Monolith before trilogy used to be different faction. It can be assumed that they already had decent weapons (I have another post which includes dialogues about older Monolith)
https://www.reddit.com/stalkecomments/1ax5u7x/interesting_facts_about_the_monolith_faction/ Second thing is that even rookies know that they gotta get better equipment before going deeper into the Zone:
"
For now I'm just gaining experience and saving up some coin. As soon as I have enough, I'll buy me a good shooter and armor, and head straight for the center of the Zone. Rumor has it some guys already made it there and found the Wish Granter. That's where I'm gonna go. And when I find it, I won't go wrong with my wish, you can bet on that!" - Dialogue of Cordon Loner in Clear Sky
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/bqyuzA.jpg And lastly, C-Consciousness Representative said "
From the moment the Zone was formed, many people have tried to get to its center". Many people seem to think that Brain Scorcher only turns people into zombies, but it seems that it was also capable of converting them to Monolith:
"
Brothers, as we were patrolling the outskirts of the Dark Forest we came upon an unfaithful loner. We did not kill him, seeing as he was already on his way to conversion, although he was still half-way in his animal state... Such is the wisdom of the Monolith: once again it revealed to us the true countenance of our enemies." - PDA entry called "A convert in the Black Forest"
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/jC2MPJ.jpg About their suits - there can be more than 1 answer.
It's interesting to point out that Monolith suit was located in lab X-18. Either the faction stashed them there, or they were here before. A possible explanation could be that such suits were used by guards of the secret facilities in the Zone before the 2nd disaster
I think this is important to point out too
"Stalker suit from the Monolith faction. The producer is unknown. Its protective properties are slightly worse then those of the PSZ-9a military bulletproof vest.
Its structure is similar to the suit popular with neutral stalkers which combines a bulletproof vest and a radiation protection suit. It provides good protection from gunfire. Its level of anomaly protection is low due to the absence of an air" - Description of Monolith Suit
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/XITJs4.jpg "
Stalker suit manufactured by "folk craftsmen". It is an effective combination of a light military bulletproof vest and of a rubberized fabric suit. It is reinforced with inserted kevlar plates and provides good protection from weak gunfire. All in all it is highly inefficient for carrying out deep raids and serious operations in the knots of the Zone." - Stalker Suit (Sunrise)
Additional proof:
https://snipboard.io/zMGpqd.jpg Lastly, Yantar loner NPCs in Clear Sky mention in their dialogue mention very interesting thing:
"I heard a whole faction went missing in the Zone. You ever heard of Monolith?
Well, they used to protect the Zone from others, but they made a move towards the center right before the Emission. Nobody has heard from them since, but recently some real aggressive stalkers have been attacking from where the Scorcher is, killing everyone and asking no questions. I know because I saw them myself around the military warehouses,
and I reckon they might be those same Monolithians who disappeared. It wouldn't surprise me, because their uniforms looked real similar." Other than a fact that Monolith faction of the trilogy had members from older Monolith who wore similar uniform, dead bodies of Monolithians in Clear Sky, that are scattered over the Zone very well could be the dead bodies of older Monolith faction

2024.05.19 10:02 Axxam A Spellsword needs help!
My first Souls game and loving it so far. I started as Sorcerer and was planning to evolve myself as Spellsword along the way. So far I've been through most areas with ease, shoot em with magic from afar and slash with sword if they get too close. But rn I'm in Sen's Fortress, I can feel the difficulty is spiking with the small room, traps left and right, no space to dodge etc and the worst case is Titanite Demons. Since there isn't much space for me to keep my distance, melee is the one I resorted to but I barely do any damage. I'm using Balder Side Sword 9+ and Magic Weapon spell, also I put some points into Dex because I know it scales with that. Should I put some in Strenght too? Or do I just need to accept my melee isn't that great when I opt to magic build?

2024.05.19 09:46 inthearmsofdyl Dream Highlights
I had a couple uncomfortable dreams, and was unable to stay asleep. I woke up at every hou40 minutes. If I managed to sleep past 15-20. I was dehydrated as well, because I ate too much flour right before going to bed. My first dream was about being watched.
There was probably a dream before that. After that one, I dreamt about a unveiled claim that billy corgan was molested by his mom. I was with my parents, sitting in the car by myself. A guy walked past who I acted like was serj tankian, even though he looked nothing like him. He had round features and looked almost mexican. Later, I had another dream where I had the awareness that my dreams were important. For a spiritual reason. Some godly, reason.
In the next dream, I was in a strange building with my family members. There was halloween decoanimatronics near the entrance or exit door. It felt like a ride as we slowly approached the walkway. I gracefully did so, probably trying to not look up at the animatronics. It's usually a reaper, constantly. Once we all were getting ready to leave, I carried a handful of things/candy. We walked outside off the porch, and I saw a younger version of my nephew. He took a piece of candy that was mine and ate it. I punched him square in the face. I vaguely remember seeing baby blankets. Before we walked outside. Everyone stood around, including my nephew at his current age. He was only a toddler. Around this time, we were in a room with some old ladies and boomers. Astrology was relevant for some reason, since I brought it up, likely. 'Leos are excessive, aries are misjudged as mean, and sags are suspicious and paranoid. About the people around them, their friends. About the world..' I paused before describing Sagittarius, feeling uneasy around the old lady who was listening to me. My mom stood at my side, probably bored or indifferent. Just like the lady seemed. She was a bitch; I could feel how much she appeared indifferent towards me. She must've been a sagittarius.
In the other side of the room, I was looking at a packet of paper that was laid in the filing drawer. It talked about the different eras of victorian houses. I saw it mentioned, 'fake doors' under victorian. That would make my house victorian, maybe. It's from the early 1900s, so just barely is it real victorian. I do not have fake doors in my house at all. I was picturing the banister on my stairs that doesn't have a lid that detaches. It's molded into the classic shape. A old lady walked over to me, pushing the filing cabinet away. Bitch, I was reading that.
At home, I went up into my bedroom. Cats were sleeping in it. A black kitten looked up at me, precious, as I tossed a cord across the floor, behind/above him. It was a cord with a plastic kitten arm on the end, like it was supposed to go to a handheld device. I thought of a gameplay controller that you plug into the tv. But it was too thin and obviously made to inject into something else. It had been laying on another kitten.
I took notice of a spider that was crawling on my bookshelf. It was white and pregnant. On one of my books, there was a spider sack on it. It was little. I don't know what happened to I assume was a second spider sack. A book with a white cover got my attention, because black specks ran over every inch of it. My little brothers had came into the room, before the infestation happened. Behind me was a rubber tub full of stuff with fabric on the top. My cats were sleeping on it. I saw my siamese in the room as well, looking at me. I woke up, itchy and scared. I hate this dream, and I also happen to hate spiders. Obviously, I have someone fake in my life. A domineering female/mother figure. Since it was both cats and spiders.

2024.05.19 09:35 Gimpdiggity Marshmallow
| Hello everyone. First post here. Iâve been feeding outdoor cats (and opossums, and raccoons, and blue jays, and skunks, and even once a coyote) for the last several years. It started in 2019 with a fluffy black cat I named Thicket, because he lived in the small wooded area behind my house. I learned that he was hunting mice by my shed, and I had a mouse problem in that shed. I started feeding him to keep him around, and I found that kept him happy but he also kept the mice away. Thicket was always really wary of me though. He never let me get close. He moved on in short order, and I only had one main cat coming, a tiger cat that we named TC. TC started coming in 2020, and he still comes around every now and then. TC will often come close to me on his own, but he is unhappy if I try to go close to him. This past year traffic really picked up. A lot of the trees in the field behind our house got taken down for a new home. When this happened, we started hearing coyotes less, so I think the predators for these cats arenât coming around. Anyway, this tiny little girl showed up and really liked watching in our windows at our cats (we have five). Sheâd just sit for hours looking in the house, but when Iâd try to make contact sheâd run. Over the last 8 months or so I have been really working on her. Back in December she finally let me pet her, but she still wanted to have an exit at the ready. Now though? She comes running when she sees me. She follows me into the house to get her food. She will regularly spend well over an hour just laying by me. This photo here is the first time she actually fell asleep on my lap. She was very clearly with kittens that she gave birth to about five weeks ago. Iâve been in contact with a rescue who will take the kittens once they venture out and get them vet care and homes. Iâm not sure where the nest is, I think itâs under my neighborâs deck, so I just have to wait until she brings them around. When I get them, I will take her to our vet to have her fixed and get her up to date on what she needs, then I hope to bring her in so she can be safe and comfy inside. She is one of four regulars at our feeder. Her, a black cat named Shadow, and two tuxedo cats that I thought was just one cat until I got them both on my trail camera at the same timeâŚso they are Tux and Tux. Shadow is close to wanting pets, but Tux and Tux flee when they see me. TC still comes occasionally, and Iâve seen on a couple rare instances a calico girl that seems very skittish. It is hard caring for them when you canât bring them all inside. A few times one has gone several days or more without showing up and I get very worried. It makes me happy to see so many people in this sub helping out their community cats. I just wanted to share. Thanks for reading. submitted by Gimpdiggity to Feral_Cats [link] [comments] |

2024.05.19 06:37 MrBackBreaker586 đ HYPE POST: GameStop (GME) to the Moon! đ
Hey Apes! đŚđđ
Itâs time to get hyped about whatâs coming for GameStop (GME)! Hereâs why weâre gearing up for an epic journey to the moon:
1. New Share Authorization
GameStop has recently authorized the issuance of up to 45 million new shares. This strategic move can provide the company with significant capital if timed correctly. Unlike in 2021, when GME couldnât sell shares during the squeeze due to regulatory constraints, they are now better prepared with timely disclosures. This could mean massive funds for GMEâs transformation!
2. Ryan Cohen's Moves
Our fearless leader, Ryan Cohen, has been making waves in the financial world. Remember his significant stake in Bed Bath & Beyond in 2022? Although he exited quickly, this move showed his strategic brilliance. Now, heâs all in on GME, and his recent acquisition of additional shares indicates strong confidence. Cohenâs vision and leadership are pivotal for GMEâs future.
3. Upcoming Catalysts
- May 24, 2024: FINRA CAT Reporting - Enhanced transparency in market activities.
- May 31, 2024: Full CAIS Compliance Go-Live - Increasing regulatory oversight.
- June 5, 2024: GME Q1 Earnings Report - Potential for game-changing announcements.
- June 21, 2024: LEAPS expiration date - Significant options activity that could drive price volatility.
4. High Short Interest
With 64.37 million shares shorted, we are primed for a potential short squeeze. The adjusted float, after accounting for DRS, institutional, and insider holdings, is approximately 45.213 million shares. This means the short interest is around 142.3% of the adjusted float! If buying pressure increases, shorts will scramble to cover, sending the stock soaring.
5. Technical Analysis
- Support Levels: Key support around $20. Holding this level is crucial.
- Resistance Levels: Significant resistance between $50-$60. Breaking through can lead to explosive movements.
- Volume Spikes: High trading volumes signal strong investor interest. Keep an eye on these!
6. Regulatory Compliance
The SEC is cracking down on naked short selling with new rules coming into effect on January 2, 2025. This will increase market transparency and could significantly impact short interest reporting. This added regulatory oversight is good news for us!
7. The Power of the Apes
Weâve seen it before, and we can see it again. The power of retail investors banding together can create unprecedented market movements. Hold the line, buy the dips, and stay informed. Our collective strength can drive GME to new heights!
LET'S GO TO THE MOON! đđ
This is more than a stock; itâs a movement. Weâre in this together, and weâre stronger than ever. With strategic moves, high short interest, and upcoming catalysts, the stage is set for something monumental. Letâs make history again!
Stay strong, Apes! TO THE MOON! đđŚđđ Newest DD:

Suzanne thought it was absolutely brilliant of me to put books on a flash drive for Sun. She explained that Sun wasnât as sophant (her word, not mine) as she might seem, more of a repository of information, but she was fairly intelligent. It was how she was able to connect Andrew being in pain to the fact that I was friends with Andrew, and that I would want to know that he was in trouble. Apparently some of Sunâs species had given some âwisdomâ to others in the past and it had made its way into mythology.
The key fact was that she was not smart enough to protect herself and her kind from the clever, organized poachers. With that information in mind, it was fascinating for me to think of how Sun took in and organized what she learned. It was almost as if she was a walking, talking library.
On the topic of tours, my first one went wonderfully, and Iâm almost hoping Suzanne lets me do more of them. I know not all the tourists are going to be as awesome as these people were, but Suzanne gave me a lot of slack when it comes to dealing with them. She actually said that being a smartass is not grounds for dismissal, and that if Iâm sarcastic or facetious to guests who are being âdaftâ and they complain, she really doesnât care. Is this the perfect job for me or what?
There were four guests in this party, two adults who were sisters and two children of one of the women, brothers aged thirteen and seventeen. The tour was a birthday gift for the older of the boys from his aunt, since apparently he was passionate about animal protection and conservation.
When they arrived at the front gate, I was sitting at Andrewâs desk, going over the booklet of information one last time. When the visitors pressed the button that sounded the alert buzzer, I tucked away in a drawer and let them in. I did have a cheat sheet with information about the animals on my phone just in case, a brief notation of each of them and which enclosure they were in, but I really didnât need to use it.
Exiting through the front door, I saw them walk up the path toward me. âHi, Iâm Ripley,â I said, holding out a hand toward the woman closest to me.
She shook it firmly. âIâm Denise. This is my sister Carla and my nephews, Wesley and Jason,â she said, motioning to each of them in turn.
âI heard itâs your birthday,â I said to Wesley, giving him a smile. âYouâre interested in animal conversation?â
âBack where we live, yeah,â he said, nodding. âThe animals that youâve got here are incredible. I canât wait to see them.â
âWell, I canât wait to show them to you,â I said. âRight this way.â
I led them on the path around the building, toward enclosure one. Despite the horrific memories of the animal killing Stanleyâs friends, I knew it was just an animal, and I had to push past my feelings on what had happened. Keeping a small smile on my face, I motioned to the enclosure. âFiercely territorial and amazing hunters, despite their large size, theyâre arboreal and known to dart from tree to tree with barely a sound. This is one of only about two thousand left in existence.â
âTwo thousand, three hundred and fifty six at last count,â spoke Wesley, his eyes on the trees.
I blinked, surprised and impressed. âWell that was fantastic. Do you plan on stealing my job when you graduate?â
Wesley looked at me with a grin. âNah, everyone knows Suzanne only offers humans this gig. And I want to help animals like this one get off the endangered species list. The zoos are great for awareness and fundraising, but then the money has to go somewhere. I want to be doing the real work.â
âThatâs really great,â I told him. âI wish you all the best in that career path.â At that, we saw the animal climb down from the tree, wandering a few yards from the tree line. This was because 90% of the time, when humans were at their enclosure and making noise, whether it was speaking to each other or calling out to the animal, it was someone bringing them prey to eat. Or, in my case, enrichment toys to play with.
âWhoa,â Wesley whispered.
âHow close can we get?â spoke up Jason.
âThe warding starts at the fence,â I told him with a small gesture. âSo, just there.â
Both boys wandered closer and I glanced at their parents. It seemed that Suzanneâs zoo had a serious reputation for high quality invisible walls, because they didnât look worried in the slightest about the boys being hurt or killed.
âThey prefer dense forest as their home and have been known to make their nests in trees up to twenty meter in the air,â I continued. âAnd when hunting, theyâve been seen dropping eight meters straight down. They have incredibly dense yet flexible musculature, which allows them to tackle their prey without injuring themselves.â
There was more information about the animal that I continued to rattle off, though Wesley chimed in at certain points with the info I was about to convey. That was highly entertaining and very cool. When Iâd been in school, Iâd never met anyone who had my level of passion about endangered animals. I wondered if things were better where these folks came from, but realized that considering there were so few of these animals left, I guessed not.
The animal paced a little bit, seemingly waiting to see if we were the kind of humans that came bearing food, before deciding we werenât and climbing back up into the trees as easily as I would climb some stairs.
As we moved onto enclosure two, Jason spoke up. âAre there any animals here we can touch or feed or something?â
I sighed inwardly before slowing to a stop. âWell, can you show me your hands?â Jason looked bemused, holding out his hands. âI meanâŚthey both look like theyâre in great shape. You can stand to lose one.â
The two women chuckled and Wesley smirked as Jason shoved his hands into his pockets. âVery funny.â
Grinning, I started walking again. âThe animals here are all carnivores and all predators. You get to see them, but thatâs it.â
âAlright.â
When we reached enclosure two, I started on my next spiel. âWeâve got three reanimated dead in this enclosure,â I spoke. They were just coming out from the trees as we arrived, presumably having heard our approach. âMarissa, Connor, and Bradley. They were donated by families who knew where they would be exhibited. Their next of kin, whoever they are, canât stand the idea of putting them down. But we need to make sure they donât have access to corpses, because one of them plus one corpse equals two of them.â
âThey eat flesh though, donât they?â Wesley asked.
I nodded. âOh, yeah, but itâs from bodies that have already been dismembered. Thereâs no chance of them being affected by the transformation because itâs all parts.â
âOh, got it.â
The creatures with blueish-white skin had superhuman strength, which is why they qualified for the security of Suzanneâs zoo. They also were likely the source of any Earth tales of people being brought back to life as zombies, specifically draugr, according to my research. They smelled like rotting flesh, so even as I kept talking about them and giving a background to the people they used to be, we were quick to move on once Wesley had gotten a good, long look at them.
âEnclosure fourâs animal is a vampiric spirit. Heâs a small, hairy humanoid creature with pointed ears. He wears a hat, and if he somehow loses it, he freaks out,â I said.
âThey eat horses,â Wesley noted. âAlso anything that gives them the chance to sit on it, usually catching them by surprise while theyâre sleeping.â
The creature came out from the brush, giving us a suspicious look. He wasnât in his humanoid form though; for some reason, heâd chosen to shapeshift to a dog.
I nodded. âYep, indeed. Once the prey is dead, then heâll eat it, and he has a voracious appetite. We have two wolves and two bears in the forest, which is one of the reasons Iâve got some self-defense items,â I said, patting my belt where my pepper spray (rated for bear) and my taser. âBut the wards keep them out of this area of the zoo, so itâs really not much of a worry. Itâs also a known shapeshifter, preferring the form of a dog, as you can see, as well as a cat, a snake, or even white butterflies, though the last one is rare.â
âThe white butterflies are supposed to be a sign of good luck,â Wesley said, glancing to me. âToo bad we got the dog.â
âYeah, otherwise you might be able to talk your mom into getting scratch-offs on your way home, huh?â
Wesley smirked at me.
The next enclosure was Spike, and he was waiting for us, dripping wet from having just emerged from the lake. I gave the introductory information about him, which included his propensity for eating animal eyes, nails, and teeth. âRecently, Iâve given him some enrichment activities, and I learned he likes artichokes, pecans, and hazelnuts,â I said, taking a bag out from my cargo shorts. âWesley, do you want to toss this bag into the enclosure?â
The boyâs eyes widened and he nodded excitedly. He took a look into the paper bag before wrapping down the top to make sure nothing would fly out. Then he chucked it underhand past the fence. It landed a few yards from Spike, who waddled over to it quickly and tearing the bag open, spilling out the prizes inside. As the animal ate the pecans and hazelnuts, Wesley asked, âHowâd you figure out he likes those?â
âItâs not all about taste,â I told him. âItâs mainly the difficulty of getting them out of the shells. Heâs used to having to work for the parts of his prey he likes the most, so this mimics that activity, and he enjoys the process. I tried a bunch of different foods to find a few he liked.â
âCool,â Wesley murmured, staring at him.
We watched Spike eat until heâd finished and then he went back into the woods, leaving us to move onto enclosure five. Japanese camellia were plentiful here, a type of pink flower, and that was because they grew anywhere near one of his species made their den. âThis girl spends most of her time in the lake also,â I said, as the creature made its way toward the fence separating us from it. âBut as you can see, sheâs just as curious as the rest about what weâre doing here and whether we have food for her. She eats fish mostly, but she also regularly gets live prey.â
This creature was a spider-like monster, having six legs with long claws on each, and the head of an ox with two sharp horns. She was capable of shapeshifting to look like a human, but I guessed that she wasnât fond of it, since I hadnât yet seen her in that form.
âShe prefers the easy way of catching prey, so to speak, by hiding in the lake and pouncing when something comes for a drink of water,â I explained. âApparently humans are some of her favorite prey. She has an advantage of being able to spit poison, which often hits her prey in the eyes. But itâs usually used in defense rather than offense, since it secretes a limited amount.â
âWhat kind of animal would even go after something like this?â Jason asked, staring at her.
âNever discount one of its own species when youâre thinking about what might attack an animal,â I replied. âThere are places that are breeding all of the animals here, but competition for mates is common. That means an advantage in a fight, like poison or venom, can make or break who the winner is.â
âAh, gotcha.â
âIt canât spit past the warding, right?â Carla suddenly asked.
âOh, no,â I assured her. âWeâre fine. The wards wouldnât let anything cross over.â She nodded, appeased.
The animal in enclosure six was the ginormous seal-hippo, Fiona, and she was looking at us as if she was imagining sprinkling us with herbs and spices and stuffing us in an oven. âThis girl is one animal Iâm going to work on enrichment activities for next,â I told them. âShe prefers to feed on crayfish, though sheâs happy to eat any humans that wander into her territory. Sheâll even make a sound like a baby crying to reel us in. Iâve heard it a bunch of times.â
âCan you get her to make the sound?â Jason asked, perking up.
I grinned. âNot on command, sorry.â
âWhat enrichment are you thinking of trying?â Wesley asked.
âPossibly food placed in puzzle feeders,â I told him, âsince she has claws that are pretty dexterous. Maybe a piĂąata made out of newspaper with flour inside, or a scarecrow that mimics a human.â
âAwesome,â he muttered.
After a little more educational tidbits, we moved onto Yuiâs enclosure. âWhat is that?â Wesley asked, smiling.
âI got Yui the closest thing I could to a ping-pong ball,â I replied. âShe quite likes it.â
âThatâs so funny,â he said as she came out of the trees in her spider form. âI mean, the idea of her being a bloodthirsty hunter who seduces men to their deaths and eats them alive, but then on the other hand, she likes playing with something like this.â
âIt is a little funny,â I agreed. âBut when it comes down to it, all the animals here enjoy activities besides hunting.â
âShe can shapeshift to look human, right?â asked Jason, trying to be casual about knowing something factual like his nerdy brother.
I nodded. âShe looks like a woman from a region of Earth called Japan. And sheâll use strategies like holding out a hand to shake to get you closer. She tried that on me when I first got here but, as you can see,â I said, holding up my hands and waving them, âI didnât fall for it.â
The boys both laughed as they got closer to the fence, watching her slowly pace near the trees.
Next was Sun, but she didnât make an appearance as I spoke about her species. âWellâŚunfortunately we canât guarantee that every animal comes out to say hi,â I sighed. âButâŚoh wait, here she is.â
The green lion with several horns and many eyes along her flank came out from the forest. âHello,â she spoke.
âHi, Sun,â I replied. âWe have visitors.â
âWhatâs that?â Wesley asked suddenly, pointing at the small plastic bag that was still where Iâd left it.
âOh! That is Sunâs enrichment,â I said with a smile. âI put dozens of books on a flash drive and found that she can read them just like sheâd read a shelf of books.â
Wesleyâs eyes widened. âWow. I donât think Iâve read about anyone trying that before. Thatâs really cool.â
âThe books are new and interesting,â Sun spoke, drawing our attention. âIâm grateful for them.â
I nodded to her. âYouâre quite welcome.â
The next animal, unfortunately, wasnât there, and we waited around for ten minutes as we discussed him. He was large and reptile-like with red eyes, with its hind legs and tail making him look vaguely like a kangaroo. Then, enclosure ten was a terrifyingly disturbing creature, the not-a-centaur with no skin, that Iâd only seen a few times while walking my route. It gave a good demonstration of its ferocity, showing its sharp teeth and snapping at us a few times.
âIâm thinking of trying salt licks and other horse enrichment like a big bouncy ball,â I told Wesley, whose eyebrows went up at that. âMaybe give him more things to forage like scattered grains or a box filled with pinecones and seeds. Foraging is a huge part of a horseâs life in the wild, and humans have to do a lot of activities like that to keep pet horses busy. Of course, he also loves the little salt-water lake that was built for him.â
We spent some time looking at the animal before moving past our last stop, the empty enclosure of the animal was stolen. Carla glanced at me with a sad smile, knowing what had happened, it seemed. I gave her a nod as we continued on our way, walking into the office. âSo, I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!â I said with a smile.
âThat was the coolest birthday present Iâve ever gotten,â Wesley said, looking to Denise. âThanks so much, seriously.â
âIt was my pleasure,â she said with a nod. âIâd never been here before, and knew Iâd find it fascinating. Thank you for the educational aspect,â Denise said, glancing at me. âI learned quite a lot.â
âHappy to hear it,â I said, returning the nod.
As I escorted the guests out of the zoo and locked the door behind them, I reflected on how much Iâd changed. The first time Iâd seen Yuiâs tarantula form, Iâd nearly passed out from fear. Now here I was, walking tourists around like it was no big deal. Humans really can adapt to anything, it seems.
That afternoon, Suzanne had texted me that she was coming by after my shift, and I met her in Andrewâs office, shutting the door to the security room behind me. âHowâs Andrew?â I asked first thing.
âHeâs doing well,â she said with a wide smile. âBack on non-hospital food. Heâs allowed to order food on his phone, and to hear it from him, thatâs the best news heâd received in a long time.â
I chuckled. âI guess some clichĂŠs are true for a reason.â
âIndeed.â She took a breath. âAll right. RipleyâŚI would like to discuss something with you.â
My face went slack at the serious tone in her voice. âIâm not⌠Am I being fired?â
âWhat? No!â she exclaimed. Then she chuckled softly. âNo, itâs nothing like that. Just, here, letâs have a seat.â Suzanne walked over to the couch and sat at one end, and I took the other. âThereâs something I need to tell you. Something Iâve kept from you, that I wanted to keep from you until you found your sea legs here.â
âWellâŚI have,â I said with a nod. âSo, what is it?â
Suzanne took a breath. âI knew your mother.â
The words hung in the air for a moment before making their way to my ears. It was a perfectly logical sentence, and yet it didnât make any sense. âWhat?â I finally managed.
âWhen you graduated college, I decided to move the zoo from Italy to within driving distance of your home,â she said softly. âNear enough to your town that youâd see the advert. We ignored any other applicants and I hoped youâd apply. Actually, I expected youâd apply. Not just for the money, but considering the field you wanted to go into. As soon as Iâd found out your major, I knew.â
âWait, wait, wait,â I said, holding up a hand. I pinched the bridge of my nose. âHow do you know Patricia?â
âShe owned the zoo before I did,â Susan explained. âFourteen years agoâŚshe was working to track an injured animal that we could bring into the zoo and she was killed by poachers.â
My heart calcified in my chest and a lump lodged in my throat. As my breaths became shaky, I stared at her in shock. âSheâŚsheâs really dead?â
âYou suspected?â she asked softly.
âItâŚâ I swallowed hard. âWe had her declared legally dead afterâŚI donât know, seven years I think. My dad wanted to go after her for child support, but the police saidâŚthey said they couldnât findâŚâ Tears came to my eyes and I blinked them back before I met Suzanneâs gaze. âShe owned the zoo?â
Suzanne nodded. âIt was her baby, youâd say. When Patricia passed, I inherited it, which weâd discussed beforehand, a legal just-in-case that I never expected her to need. Iâm under the impression that you were told she went to Africa for her photography career, but she was in fact going to remote areas back in my home world almost every time.â
âBut I-I saw the photos,â I said, my eyes narrowing. âYouâre telling me she put on a show of getting pictures that someone else took for us to see every time she visited? Did my dad even know?â
âI suppose thatâs an accurate way to put it, putting on a show. And no, your father was never told. Itâs not the way of things to tell humans unless itâs necessary. I wonât bore you with the details, but us and humans, weâre distant relatives, so we can still have children. But it wasnât planned. Your mother fell in love with your father despite herself; she hadnât meant to find love. Then she became pregnant with you andâŚwell, the rest is history.â
âI think she had a different definition of love than the one I have,â I said tightly. âYouâd think sheâd have put her survival as more of a priority. Put being with the man she âlovedâ as a priority. Her kids needed her. I needed her. She signed up when she became a mom. She couldâve screwed up all the time but she couldnât even manage that one job: be there. When I was in the hospital, I kept thinking, âWhere is she?â and now youâre telling me that she put these animals above being there for her kids, and this whole time sheâs been dead.â
âThe hospital?â she asked, furrowing her brows.
âNever mind,â I said tersely, averting my gaze.
Suzanne hesitated before she nodded slowly. âIâm sorry for your loss, and not just for her death, Ripley,â she told me. âPatricia wasâŚwell, a âfree spiritâ would be putting it gently. She always assumed the world would be there for her whenever she needed it.â
Staring at her for a long moment, I shook my head. âWhy? Why come here and hire me?â
âI thought that would be obvious,â she said, smiling. âYour mother was so passionate about this place and once I found out your college major, I figured you would be as well.â
âDid you know that I hate her?â At that, Suzanneâs expression froze on the edge of shock. âSheâŚshe left us,â I whispered. âDidnât tell us who she was or what she really did for a living and gave us no closure. And even when she was here, it was just visiting. Her real home was her work. She could give me all the presents she wanted, but even when she was here, half the time she was still on her computer doing work. Itâs not like that stereotype of never making it to my tennis practice or something; itâs that it always felt like she was only partially here, even when I was sitting next to her. I donât even know if I appreciate her turning me into a wildlife fanatic because itâŚitâŚmakes me feel like Iâm close to her in a way thatâs just infuriating. She loved the animals more than she loved us.â
âOh, Ripley-â
âDonât,â I said, shoving myself to my feet. âDonât try to convince me otherwise.â
âI wasnât going to,â she said quietly. I pursed my lips. âI was going to say that Iâm sorry that was the case. Your mother wasâŚflawed, just like any other person. She had two loves in this world: her family and her work. And often, her work overcame her, her zeal for environmentalism getting in the way of being a good mum. She left your father trying to fill the role of two parents, holding your family together. You and your brother and your father, you all deserved better than that.â
My lower lip quivered but I bit down on it hard. It wouldâve been a lot easier for me if sheâd been speaking from a place of clueless reassurance about all this. But everything she said was making sense and that meant I didnât have someone in front of me to be angry with.
âWhy didnât you tell me when Andrew hired me?â I sighed, sitting back down on the couch.
âWell, like I said, I wanted you to find your sea legs,â she said with a small smile. âI didnât want the truth affecting whether or not you wanted to work here, whether you wanted to stay here after finding out about what the animals are. It wouldâve complicated things, the emotions youâll have to work through now that you know the truth. Whether or not you decide to give another tour, you also know what theyâre like. Thatâs the benchmark I wanted you to reach before you found out about who you are.â
I narrowed my eyes. âWho I-â My face went slack. âWait.â
Suzanne nodded slowly. âYouâre only half human. Your brother too.â
The room seemed to tilt on an axis for a moment. âThat means Iâm also halfâŚwhat?â
âWe call ourselves Eldritch, these days,â she replied.
My eyes bugged out. âWhat?â I exclaimed. âSo youâre all, like, gods or something?â
Suzanne burst out laughing. âOh no, goodness, no,â she chuckled. âItâs just a word. We live in a very different world from this one, and a few generations ago we discovered the word and it made its way into our lexicon. But it does mean you can see all the animals. Indeed you did, on the tour you gave.â
âWait, no, I had the glasses thatâŚâ I stopped. âDid those glasses do anything?â
She gave a sly smile and shook her head. âNot a thing. You made incredibly quick progress, and then when it came time for the tour, all you needed was to expect to see the animals, and you did.â
Genetics. Thatâs what Andrew had said during our interview, that part of how many animals you could see was determined by genetics. I guess having a mother who was originally from the other dimension gave me all the genes I needed to see everything here. âCould IâŚvisit your world?â I asked tentatively. âYou said that my mom took photos of the animals there. Could IâŚâ My voice trailed off, not even sure if or how I wanted to finish that sentence.
âThose who are half human, especially those who are raised on Earth, donât come visit,â she said gently. âI could show you some photos of other animals, and I could loan you as many books as youâd like, but itâs simply not a place where youâd be safe.â
âOh,â I said, leaning into the couch cushion as I pictured the animals in the zoo. âYeah, actually thatâŚmakes sense.â I paused. âSo, what now?â
âItâs up to you,â she said. âI wanted to wait until I was sure you were comfortable with your position here, and then put the ball in your court. And so it is. What do you want to do now?â
What did I want to do? It wasnât that difficult a question, just a deep, serious one.
I wanted to thrive, as the animals did. This is my enrichment now, working at an incredible, wonderful, terrifying zoo. The experience so far hasnât been perfect, and I know there are risks, but life isnât about staying safe. Itâs about learning new things and making a difference in the world. And, if youâre lucky, having a job thatâs something really special.
THE END

2024.05.19 05:57 Lluviasrain Hello, Dot
| Anyone here get to try Hello, Dot on Meta Quest VR yet? It's so cute. 𼚠It's technically advertised for the Quest 3 since it has better mixed reality.. but it's technically usable on v.2. Just less pleasing and a little more buggy, lol. It's super barebones rn: only being able to hold/nudge a dot the VR app gives you (random reroll each time you reopen the app), dip it in a color bucket to randomly change its cosmetics and feed it random food. But it's super exciting to see how much the AR and VR side of Peridot will be evolving. submitted by Lluviasrain to peridotpets [link] [comments] |

2024.05.19 04:51 AtlasOfAtlantis Please Help with Rehoming Husky
Hi all,
I need help rehoming a husky. We picked him up at the shelter as someone was trying to surrender him after finding him on the turnpike off exit 2 but the shelter was at capacity.
He's super smart, cuddly, and an amazing dog. He knows how to sit and give you patica and how to go down on command. Responds to Starrk, has a lot of energy and a lot of love to give.
I wish I could keep him but I have two cats. I'm not sure if he's necessarily aggressive towards them, but he tries to chase and I always stop out of fearing the worst so he'd likely be better in a home with no cats. He's been good with the toddlers in my family. He is not neutered and shot status is unknown. He has a chip with no registered owner.
He is not aggressive with food to my knowledge as I tested that as well. He likes to sleep as long as anyone is near him, but otherwise gets pretty anxious when left alone.
If you have any recommendations for rescues or are interested in him, please reach out.

2024.05.19 04:30 Sophia_TheGreat My 3yo F cat attacks my 2yo F cat and I donât know what to do.
Hello, i need some help and the background info is gonna be a little long. I have had cats my whole life (24yrs) and my parentâs house has been a dumping ground for cats since we moved here. Over the last few years this has resulted in 15 cats living in our house. I know it sounds insane. There were never any problems until about 2 years ago when I foster failed my now 2 year old female cat Maxie. When we tried to introduce her to my now 3 year old female cat Ginny back at the end of 2022. Maxie went to run away from Ginny and Ginny just jumped right on top of her and I had to tear them apart. After that we kept them separated hoping to room swap which didnât work due to too many cats being in the house. Fast forward to today, my husband and I have just gotten our own place and are getting it ready to take our cats to and for the last year and a half we have kept them completely separate. Ginny is in my room when Maxie has the rest of the house and when Ginny needs to come out Maxie goes into my sisterâs room. Today there was an accident where my sister was making sure Maxie wasnât going to slip out into the hallway while she exited her room and didnât see Ginny sitting outside her door. Ginny ran into my sisterâs room and immediately went after Maxie and they broke apart long enough for Maxie to escape my sisterâs room and then my sister grabbed Ginny and yelled for help. I do not blame my sister, it was an accident and it could have happened to any of us. Now, we were hoping that since they hadnât had contact in so long we could bring them into the new apartment they didnât smell like either of them and use the Jackson Galaxy method of introducing them but I feel like our year and a half of progress is just gone and I am sick to my stomach over it. Has anybody ever dealt with something like this? Iâm terrified Iâll never get them to get along and Iâll have to leave one of them with my parents who only want older cats. Extra info: There is never any hissing or growling, Ginny will sit and stare under the door to my sisterâs room or sleep outside of it. And when sheâs gone after her she just runs and jumps on her. TLDR: My 3 yo cat attacks my 2yo cat with no prompting, it happened today after keeping them separated for a year and a half preparing them to be reintroduced for when we found our own place. I donât know what to do. I donât want to have to leave one of them with my parents.

I spent a lot of time on this, and Iâm very proud of the result! Iâd appreciate if you gave it a read and left any feedback. <3
Under the Shroud of Night Chapter Concept
New Killer: Alfred Warren (The Werewolf)
New Survivor: Barry Bennett

Map Offering: Bloody Fur
âUnkempt and untamed black fur, dripping with fresh blood. Whatever creature the fur belonged to, it was no ordinary beast.â
Barry Bennett Perks:
Solitary Survivalist
You work best alone. Too much company would attract unwanted attention.
While there are no other Survivors within 32/28/24 meters of you, you leave no scratch marks and your aura cannot be revealed to the Killer.
These effects are disabled while being chased.
âYou tryinâ to draw attention? Keep it down, or Iâll throw you to the wolves.â - Barry Bennett
On the Clock
When pressure begins to mount, your determination knows no bounds.
While opening an exit gate, the Endgame Collapse timer is paused. Open exit gates 5/7.5/10% faster.
After opening an exit gate, the Endgame Collapse timer is delayed by 15 seconds.
âThis ainât my first rodeo, kid. I can buy us some time.â - Barry Bennett
Into the Night
While others stumble their way through the dark, your keen senses allow you to traverse with ease.
Anytime you are afflicted with the Blindness or Oblivious status effect, the Killerâs aura is revealed to you for 6/7/8 seconds. You still suffer from the negative effects.
Has a cooldown of 30 seconds.
âIf you canât handle it, go throw yourself on a hook and save the beast some trouble.â - Barry Bennett
Alfred Warren, The Werewolf
Power: Predatorâs Pursuit
As the full moon rises, the beastâs hunt begins. Run or hide, it doesnât matter; heâll find you all the same.
SPECIAL ABILITY: HUNTERâS INSTINCT

2024.05.19 02:11 delipunch How to fix accelerometer and touchscreen orientation in Arch
I want to run Arch on my Chinesium Intel CPU tablet, but the touchscreen needs the X-axis mirrored to be correct (when in portrait, the default orientation), and the accelerometer sometimes gets stuck,
and always reads upside down in all orientations fixed orientation before posting.
