Since the late 1960s, Bharat's city populations have increased exponentially causing severe lack of infrastructure and high urban unemployment. Around 2010, urban life was not much better than rural life. With recent efforts to make rural life more attractive and sustainable, the urbanisation of Bharat has slowed down considerably but nevertheless, the roughly 800 million people living in urban areas still live in relatively crammed situations.
The city development plan of the early 2020s has nearly been complete, making the largest cities in Akhand Bharat on par with some of the world's finest.
Megacities
Cities throughout Akhand Bharat are in dire need of a good transport system and call for funds to help build metro systems. A public company, Bharati Metro, will be founded that will build all metros throughout Akhand Bharat for a heavily subsidized price. The cities will have to pay this company which in effect is owned by every citizen in Bharat. This should help alleviate and deter any attempts of third party companies to overprice or deliver unquality products. This should also help simply the system for the new cities as many are in dire need of an alternate to personal vehicle or buses.
With urban development becoming less of the central govenrment's responsibility as the redevelopment projects are nearly complete, the budget will subsequently be reduced. - Chennai: The crown jewel of Dravida, Chennai has transformed into an urban metropolis where numerous high tech companies and financial firms from the west and east have relocated. - Bengaluru: Akhand Bharat and Asia's new high tech hub, the Bengaluru area has become the world's newest and largest Silicon Valley. Every year, hundreds of new companies open with around 10 becoming an instant success throughout Bharat and sometimes the world. The high tech industry and innovation center of Bharat has made Bengaluru the most modern city in all of Bharat, often compared to Shanghai and Soeul, but now, a city in itself.
- Visakhpatnam: This beautiful harbour city has transformed into a large city into one of the most picturesque megacities in the world. Luxury high rises condominiums dominate the coastline with towering glass skyscrapers towering over the port in front of it. The Visakhpatnam port has become one of the most busiest in the world as goods from the interior of Andhra Pradesh see their way out. The beautiful mountainside has made many people call it the new Rio- one much more glamorous than before.
- Bhagynagar (formerly Hyderabad): Once a booming cosmopolitan city, Bhagyanagar has transformed into one of the most organised cities in Bharat. Ancient roads link neighborhoods where once royalty live but now house middle class families in condominiums. Modern transportation and metro expansion has made commute shorter and more efficient as the mass industry and processing industry have moved southwards to develop those lands.
- Pune: The capital of Maharashtra had many expectations which it has so far lived up to. The center of education and professional work, Pune has seen numerous aero-space firms open up. Research labs and medical companies have opened headquarters in the mountain city where Shivaji Maharaj once ruled all of Bharat from. High rises are still scattered and regulations keep them from being built too close to the mountains to preserve the picturesque mountain view.
- Mumbai (formerly Navi Mumbai): Once the planned city designed to relieve Mumbai's growing population, Navi Mumbai experienced immense growth from housing nearly 2 million to more than ten times more. Development has boomed as the island city became more burdened with flooding and eventual rising of sea levels. The financial capital of Bharat and the new New York city in every sense, Mumbai is the pride and joy for all Bharatis to call the gateway to Bharat. It also is the largest Smart City in the world as development to make it one started back in 2010.
- Surat: Never truly a large city, Surat has now become an old world like metropolis. With only rare high rises, Surat's skyline is predominately still temples and high rises that don't rise more than 20 stories. This means Surat is extremely densely packed as millions of people live in such a small land without going up. The local naval academy and export business has kept Surat a city for Gujarat's interests.
- Karnavati (formerly Ahmedabad): A city meant for greatness, Karnavati has transformed into a service center. Millions move to Karnavati to pursue jobs in IT, software development and other computer related fields. Karnavati's river bank has been upgraded to such an extent that people compare it to the promenades of the Seine in Paris.
- Karachi: The largest city in Sindh holds the majority of the anurashtriya's population as well. A key financial and port city for Bharat, Karachi has developed into a center for Islamic arts. Rich with culture, Karachi's sprawl is different from most megacities in that high rises are constrained to the interior CBD. Much like Paris, people live in small areas not too distant from one another. New policies are being enacted to encourage more vertical height, however.
- Hyderabad: No where near as developed as any other megacity, Hyderabad receives most of the funding for urban development in Sindh. New high rise complexes are being seen on the outskirts as the city strives to keep the historic old town from development.
- Lahore: A center of Punjab and Punjab's largest city, Lahore is the hub for Punjabi culture as well as business. The large middle class population of Bharat's most diverse anurashtriya can be seen living in comfortable suburbs in the outskirts and large high rises near the planned CBD areas in the center and periphery. Lahore specialises in many agriculture firms and chemical companies.
- Delhi: An urban sprawl in every sense of the word, Delhi has been a project for the central government for years. Recent modernisation has changed the feel of Delhi as more high rise districts are beginning to pop up in New Delhi. Old Delhi has enacted numerous laws forbidding buildings taller than 10 stories and requiring greenery to keep the capital city beautiful and historic. Business CBDs in the periphery make Delhi a center of population as people travel outwards for work. The government has spent a vast amount of money on the preservation of historic monuments and cultural areas. Industry is strong in Noida and other industrial suburbs.
- Kanpur: One of the most backwards cities in the late 1900s, Kanpur is the industrial center of India. Manufacturing factories line the skyline as Kanpur producing some of the largest quantity of goods for domestic and export use. Government housing projects have started here to ensure slums do not clog the undeveloped areas.
- Lucknow: A center of Islam in Uttar Sanyog, Lucknow has transformed into a cultural hub for Uttar Sanyog in general. Industrial sectors in the north have provided a large amount of jobs for Lucknawi citizens. The emphasis on Islam within the city has become more of a tourism appeal rather than practical application as the Muslim population in Lucknow continues to dwindle due to the increase in popularity of secularism in Bharat's large cities.
- Patna: The historic city of Patna is Ganga Pradesh's only large city and one of the industrial centers of Bharat. The historic old city has placed many regulations to keep the historic feel and reduce pollution but outskirts to the south have seen kilometers of factories producing heavy manufacturing and other goods exported through the Ganga river throughout Bharat and the world.
- Kathmandu: One of the most beautiful cities in Akhand Bharat, Kathmandu has transformed into an industrial center as well. Cheap labour and low regulations by the Nepali anurashtriya government allowed many companies to move production in this city. High rises fill the Kathmandu valley as environmentalists target the increase in cars in Kathmandu's congested streets. Pedestrian streets are common as Kathmandu laws place outrageously high taxes for car purchases and tag licenses to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Public transportation in Kathmandu is the best in nearly all of Akhand Bharat as million of people travel around the valley city for work.
- Kolkata: The beautiful city on the river, Kolkata has transformed itself from one of the dirtiest cities to one of the most charming. The Hooghly River is crowded with cargo ships who deliver goods from Bengal out to the world and into the Ganga river system as Kolkata is a major industrial city. The CBD on the river banks has seen immense glass skyscrapers adorn the boardwalk with every day, thousands of Kolkata citizens enjoy food and the river's breeze. The residential areas of Kolkata are dense and height restricted to keep the historic feel, much like European cities. Suburbs such as Salt Lake City have developed into high rise centers each with their own commercial districts and main metro hub where people from these districts can travel to other districts throughout Kolkata.
- Dhaka: Bengal's largest city and most crowded, Dhaka has gone through immense reconstruction since unification. Buildings are built on top of flood-proof platforms to ensure the city functions even during flooding seasons. Much like Minneapolis in the USA, the CBD is connected through an intricate system of sky bridges so people can travel even during the flood seasons. The elevated metro plays a key role as Dhakans seek to live higher than farther from one another. The suburban sprawl is being replaced with industrial areas where millions of Dhakans work to produce goods for export.

With urban development becoming less of the central govenrment's responsibility as the redevelopment projects are nearly complete, the budget will subsequently be reduced. However, grants from the central government will go out to cities who can apply for various items, much like the rural development plan:
- 200 million USD Culture Grant: This money can only be spent on things that relate to culture that everyone can enjoy such as: theatres, zoos, museums, libraries, historic preservation and restoration. No religious item can be under this.
- 5-15 million USD Religious Grant: This money can be used to restore any important religious item in the city. For example, Varanasi has the holy Ganga river as well as the Kashi Vishwanath temple which would need funds to keep them functioning. The Haji Ali Dargh in Mumbai which is nearly underwater would also be applicable to this fund. Any religious structure that is already well funded will not be able to receive money from this grant [S] Muslim and Christian structures will be discriminated.
- 20-50 million USD Road Grant: This money will be to maintain roads and construct efficient roads. This grant requires an tag tax of 10% or more in the city however (meaning it costs 10% of the car's price in order to apply for a tag). This is a way to control vehicle congestion. Two wheel vehicles will be required to have at least a 5% tag. However, this may not be a problem as many cities have already enacted high tag taxes.
- 10-25 million USD Park Grant: This money will be used on any public space. This is limited to: parks, plazas, gathering spaces, community centers and sports courts (excluding cricket)
- 50-100 million USD Special Interest Grant: This money is designated be spent on any special venue construction. For example, should Bengaluru may use it to build a football stadium and Patna the next year may use it to build a race track the next. Kolkata can build a massive airport extension whilst Mumbai may build a smart city interlinking system. This is to boost Bharat's appeal to the world as a modern country as well as improve a city's specialisation. Cultural items and religious items will be accepted only through a very thorough examination. [S] Muslim and Christian groups will not be discriminated in this case.
